  1. So we live in a world where we are constantly watched.

  2. People are always around us.

  3. People are always aware of what we're doing.

  4. And everything is online now.

  5. So even if they're not with us physically, they can still watch what we're doing.

  6. And it's crazy the transition that's happened over the past 20 years.

  7. We went from having phones at home that could connect us to the world

  8. to having internet on a dial-up modem at home

  9. to having phones in our pockets that we can connect with the world at any time from anywhere we are

  10. to having phones with internet in our pockets

  11. that allow us not only to call people from anywhere, anytime,

  12. but to get online and send pictures and messages to everyone in the entire world

  13. from anywhere we are at any time.

  14. The world has become incredibly connected,

  15. and it's just becoming more and more and more connected.

  16. and early next year it's going to take one step further when the Apple Watch comes out.

  17. Technology is becoming more and more a part of our everyday lives.

  18. Soon it will be to the point where we will have the internet strapped to our wrists 24-7.

  19. And with this connectedness, there's this sense of people watching us,

  20. this sense of having to put on a performance

  21. for everyone in the world to see what we're doing.

  22. You know, Time Magazine, after Apple announced the Apple Watch,

  23. they wrote an article about the advance of technology,

  24. specifically about the Apple Watch.

  25. And they were surprisingly negative on it.

  26. But they had a quote in that article that I thought was great.

  27. They said,

  28. The reality of living with an iPhone or any smart connected mobile device

  29. is that it makes reality feel just a little bit less real.

  30. One gets over-connected to the point where one is apt to pay attention

  31. to the thoughts and opinions of distant anonymous strangers

  32. over those of loved ones who are in the same room.

  33. Ironically enough, experiences don't feel fully real

  34. until you've used your phone to make them virtual,

  35. and the world has congratulated you for doing so.

  36. So, our lives, we can't just live our lives anymore.

  37. We have to live our lives for the likes on Facebook and Instagram.

  38. We can't just enjoy being around the people that we love.

  39. We have to tweet about the food that we're eating

  40. while we are around the people that we love.

  41. Enjoyable experiences in life can't just be enjoyable for themselves.

  42. They're enjoyable because people approve of us doing them.

  43. And as he talked about the advance of technology

  44. and how soon you'll be able to push a button on your wrist

  45. and send your heartbeat to your best friends.

  46. And he said,

  47. It's sort of scary, the idea,

  48. that teenage girls who are already obsessed with their body image

  49. will now be able to compare all their health stats with each other in real time.

  50. And the one line I think that stuck out from the Time magazine article more than any other,

  51. he said,

  52. Lives lived in public become performances.

  53. Lives lived in public become performances.

  54. When we're obsessed with everyone else seeing us

  55. and thinking,

  56. What are they thinking as they see me live my life?

  57. Are they going to give me the likes on Facebook?

  58. Or Instagram?

  59. Or Twitter?

  60. Or Pinterest?

  61. Or whatever other social media site you use?

  62. You stop living life as yourself.

  63. You stop living life as God would want you to.

  64. And your life becomes a performance,

  65. seeking the biggest applause from the crowd that's watching you.

  66. And I think as humanity,

  67. this has always been a struggle,

  68. living lives for the approval of others.

  69. But in today's world,

  70. that struggle has just been amplified.

  71. It's been put on a bigger stage

  72. because we are more connected than ever before

  73. and have more opportunities

  74. to show off our lives

  75. to everyone around us

  76. than ever before in history.

  77. I think for a lot of us,

  78. this whole idea of people-pleasing

  79. or living our lives for the approval of others

  80. or fear of man,

  81. we don't really think of it as a sin

  82. because it's just second nature to us.

  83. And how could something so natural be sinful?

  84. The Bible says

  85. that at the root of all people-pleasing,

  86. at the root of all fear of man,

  87. is idolatry.

  88. That we've taken God

  89. and replaced him with other people.

  90. And that it's fundamentally sinful.

  91. And so today we're going to look at

  92. people-pleasing and the fear of man.

  93. And I want us to see three things

  94. about people-pleasing and the fear of man.

  95. I'll just use those two terms synonymously

  96. so I might jump back and forth between them.

  97. But I want us to see three things about it.

  98. The first one is that it's universal.

  99. Literally everyone struggles with it

  100. at some point,

  101. in some way.

  102. And I think, you know,

  103. that's why we downplay it.

  104. Because I struggle with it,

  105. you struggle with it,

  106. he struggles with it,

  107. she struggles with it.

  108. How can I judge anyone else

  109. for struggling with it?

  110. Or how can I say it's wrong

  111. when everyone does it?

  112. And you notice we want it to be acceptable.

  113. Think about the names we use for it.

  114. People-pleasing.

  115. It sounds so pleasant.

  116. We don't want to call it sin.

  117. So say people-pleasing.

  118. It's something that I can change

  119. by putting in a little extra effort.

  120. The sin says,

  121. I can't change it through my effort.

  122. And so we change the terminology

  123. we use to refer to it

  124. so that we can make it

  125. a more acceptable practice.

  126. Not even a sin,

  127. just acceptable practice

  128. for us to do in our lives.

  129. It's so universal.

  130. It's everywhere.

  131. And we change the label,

  132. we make it more respectable,

  133. and we make it easier for us to do.

  134. And it's sometimes scary to me

  135. how everywhere it is.

  136. So the youth staff recently,

  137. we were talking with each other,

  138. and we were saying,

  139. we want to develop

  140. more of a culture of prayer

  141. among our youth.

  142. We want our youth to pray more.

  143. And so we as a youth staff decided,

  144. if we want the youth to pray more,

  145. we should be praying more.

  146. So we made an agreement

  147. with each other as the youth staff

  148. that when we get into the office

  149. in the morning,

  150. whenever we see each other,

  151. the first thing we do

  152. when we see each other

  153. is we pray together.

  154. And we decided this

  155. a couple weeks ago,

  156. and we were all excited about it.

  157. And we're like,

  158. let's do this.

  159. And so the next day,

  160. I go into the office,

  161. and I see one of the other

  162. youth staff in there,

  163. and I'm like,

  164. oh no,

  165. I have to ask her to pray with me.

  166. This is going to be awkward.

  167. I did it,

  168. but I paused.

  169. And thought,

  170. this is awkward.

  171. I'm afraid.

  172. What's she going to think of me

  173. when I say,

  174. let's pray together?

  175. Because that's not something

  176. we're used to doing all the time.

  177. And think about how messed up this is.

  178. We both are Christians.

  179. We both work in a church.

  180. We both agreed already

  181. that we're going to pray together

  182. when we see each other,

  183. and I still find it awkward

  184. to go say,

  185. hey, let's pray together,

  186. because I'm afraid

  187. of what she's going to think of me.

  188. It's so second nature

  189. to who we are.

  190. Even the apostles,

  191. Jesus' original followers,

  192. struggled with this issue.

  193. In today's passage,

  194. we see Cephas

  195. is another name for Peter.

  196. So Peter

  197. is acting and living

  198. out of the fear of man

  199. in today's passage.

  200. Now,

  201. if you don't know much about Peter,

  202. he was one of Jesus'

  203. original followers.

  204. He was set up by Jesus

  205. as one of the original leaders

  206. of the church.

  207. And back then,

  208. the Jews

  209. and the Gentiles,

  210. the non-Jews,

  211. didn't really have

  212. any interaction.

  213. And Peter

  214. was a Jew,

  215. and so he

  216. followed

  217. the Jewish laws

  218. and stuck with

  219. the commandments

  220. that had come

  221. in the Old Testament,

  222. and he was a good Jew.

  223. Till one day,

  224. he received

  225. this message from God,

  226. directly from God,

  227. saying,

  228. Peter,

  229. I want you

  230. to go share

  231. the message of Jesus

  232. with the Gentiles.

  233. And so Peter

  234. went and he obeyed.

  235. He shared the message

  236. of Jesus

  237. with the Gentiles.

  238. And he realized

  239. God has saved

  240. the Gentiles

  241. just like

  242. he has saved the Jews.

  243. There's no distinction

  244. or differentiation

  245. between the Jews

  246. and the Gentiles.

  247. And then he went

  248. on a journey

  249. to the city

  250. called Antioch,

  251. and when he was there,

  252. there were Jewish Christians

  253. and there were Gentile Christians,

  254. and he would eat

  255. with the Gentiles

  256. and the Jews

  257. and Gentiles

  258. would all eat together

  259. because in Jesus,

  260. they're not separated anymore.

  261. They're brought together.

  262. And then the men

  263. from James came.

  264. Now James

  265. was the half-brother

  266. of Jesus.

  267. James was the leader

  268. of the church

  269. in Jerusalem.

  270. James had some power.

  271. And when it says

  272. this group came

  273. from James,

  274. we don't know

  275. exactly what that means.

  276. It could have been

  277. that he directly sent them

  278. as a delegation

  279. to represent him.

  280. It could be

  281. that they had sort of

  282. been a part of his church

  283. and they came.

  284. Like if someone here

  285. moved and went to like

  286. one of our sister churches

  287. in Taipei,

  288. and then they could say like,

  289. oh, these people

  290. came from Tobin.

  291. Or it could be

  292. that these people came,

  293. said they were from James,

  294. and actually had no connection

  295. with him whatsoever,

  296. and they were just lying

  297. about it.

  298. Regardless of the situation,

  299. when they came,

  300. Peter changed his behavior

  301. in response to them

  302. being there.

  303. Now the scary thing is,

  304. if these people came

  305. and were lying

  306. about their connection

  307. with James,

  308. which in the book of Acts,

  309. James talks about people

  310. who went out from him

  311. saying they were from him

  312. but actually spread

  313. a totally different message

  314. than he was spreading.

  315. That means Peter

  316. changed his behavior

  317. to try and accommodate

  318. what he thought

  319. James wanted him to do,

  320. but what he thought

  321. James wanted him to do

  322. and what James actually

  323. wanted him to do

  324. were totally different things.

  325. So he was changing

  326. his behavior

  327. to please someone

  328. who actually didn't want him

  329. to do the thing

  330. that he was doing,

  331. potentially.

  332. And so these people came,

  333. and when Peter saw them,

  334. he became afraid

  335. and started changing

  336. his behavior.

  337. He started eating

  338. only with the Jews,

  339. not with the Gentiles anymore.

  340. The text doesn't even

  341. specifically tell us

  342. that these people

  343. started teaching

  344. that he had to eat

  345. with the Jews.

  346. It could have just been

  347. that they didn't eat

  348. with the Gentiles

  349. and he got afraid,

  350. what are they going

  351. to think with me

  352. if I keep eating

  353. with the Gentiles?

  354. Am I going to lose

  355. my status and position

  356. in the church?

  357. Am I going to lose

  358. my ability

  359. to influence the Jews

  360. and draw people

  361. towards Jesus?

  362. Is James going

  363. to get upset with me

  364. if he hears

  365. that I've been eating

  366. with the Gentiles?

  367. These thoughts

  368. went around

  369. and around

  370. in his head

  371. and he realized,

  372. I need to change

  373. what I am doing

  374. so that I can fit in

  375. so that I can be accepted.

  376. And when Paul saw

  377. what was going on,

  378. he said,

  379. that is absolutely

  380. not okay.

  381. He used a word

  382. to describe

  383. James' behavior,

  384. a word that

  385. Jesus reserved

  386. for the people

  387. he didn't like,

  388. a word called hypocrisy.

  389. Originally,

  390. this word

  391. comes from a Greek word

  392. that refers to

  393. wearing a mask

  394. in a play

  395. or pretending

  396. to be someone

  397. that you're not.

  398. Paul's basically saying

  399. Peter was pretending

  400. to be something

  401. other than what he was

  402. so that he could fit in

  403. and be accepted.

  404. Peter,

  405. this pillar of the church,

  406. Peter,

  407. this original disciple

  408. of Jesus

  409. was afraid

  410. of what people

  411. would think about him

  412. and changed his behavior

  413. to be accepted

  414. by them.

  415. Everyone

  416. is susceptible

  417. to people pleasing

  418. and the fear of man.

  419. Everyone

  420. is susceptible

  421. to changing

  422. how we act

  423. and what we do

  424. so that other people

  425. will think better of us.

  426. And it's not just

  427. something that was there

  428. 2,000 years ago.

  429. It's so common

  430. even in the world today.

  431. How many of us

  432. want to impress

  433. our bosses?

  434. We'll show up

  435. in the morning

  436. before the boss

  437. gets there

  438. so that he can see

  439. we're a good worker.

  440. We'll skip lunch,

  441. work very hard

  442. so the boss

  443. can see us.

  444. And then we'll stay

  445. in the office

  446. till just after

  447. the boss leaves

  448. so that he knows

  449. we care about our job,

  450. we care about the company,

  451. we're there for him.

  452. But really

  453. we just want him

  454. to think good things

  455. about us

  456. so we can get raises

  457. and promotions.

  458. Or we'll go to school

  459. and we'll pretend

  460. to be smarter than we are

  461. or cooler than we are

  462. because we know

  463. that the kids at school

  464. would never accept us

  465. if they knew

  466. who we really were.

  467. we change our behavior

  468. to be accepted.

  469. It's a universal issue.

  470. This issue

  471. of people pleasing,

  472. this sin issue

  473. of people pleasing

  474. is one

  475. that is universally

  476. applicable.

  477. The second thing

  478. I want us to see

  479. about people pleasing

  480. and the fear of man

  481. is that it is

  482. fundamentally opposed

  483. to the gospel.

  484. You notice

  485. Peter

  486. or yeah,

  487. Peter's

  488. eating with only the Jews

  489. not the Gentiles.

  490. Paul comes,

  491. he opposes Peter

  492. to his face.

  493. Paul sees

  494. that Peter

  495. is acting out of fear

  496. of other people

  497. not out of

  498. a love for God

  499. or out of an understanding

  500. of the gospel.

  501. The gospel says

  502. our acceptance

  503. before Jesus

  504. is unconditional.

  505. It's not based

  506. on the nationality

  507. that we're born into.

  508. It's not based

  509. on our ability

  510. to keep the law.

  511. It's based on

  512. what Christ has done

  513. for us on the cross

  514. and what Christ

  515. has done for us

  516. on the cross

  517. alone.

  518. And Peter

  519. by eating

  520. with only Jews

  521. was basically saying

  522. there's a hierarchy

  523. in salvation.

  524. Yeah,

  525. you Gentiles,

  526. you can be Christians

  527. but the Jews

  528. are the real Christians.

  529. The Jews

  530. are the ones

  531. that God loves more.

  532. The ones

  533. who follow the law

  534. have a special standing

  535. with God

  536. that you don't get

  537. unless you're born

  538. into this people group

  539. or this nation.

  540. And Paul says,

  541. Peter,

  542. your behavior

  543. is not in line

  544. with the truth

  545. of the gospel.

  546. The truth

  547. that the gospel

  548. preaches

  549. and teaches

  550. is fundamentally

  551. opposed

  552. to the behavior

  553. that you're living out

  554. and saying

  555. is in line with it.

  556. And so Paul

  557. opposes Peter.

  558. There's this smackdown

  559. between these

  560. greats of the faith.

  561. But you notice

  562. the way that Paul

  563. approaches the problem.

  564. He doesn't say,

  565. hey Peter,

  566. I wish you wouldn't

  567. act like that.

  568. I'm upset

  569. with the way

  570. you're acting.

  571. Because what would that do?

  572. That would say,

  573. Paul wants me

  574. to act this way,

  575. James' people

  576. want me to act this way,

  577. who do I want

  578. happier with me?

  579. And it brings it back

  580. to an issue

  581. of fear of man

  582. and people pleasing again.

  583. Really,

  584. even if Paul had said,

  585. Peter,

  586. I don't like

  587. that you're acting this way

  588. and Peter had chosen

  589. to do the right thing,

  590. he still would have done it

  591. out of a fear

  592. of other people,

  593. out of a desire

  594. to impress people.

  595. But when Paul comes,

  596. he says,

  597. Peter,

  598. you are acting

  599. out of line

  600. with the truth

  601. of the gospel.

  602. What you are doing,

  603. it's not that

  604. I don't like it,

  605. it's that God

  606. disapproves of it.

  607. What you are doing,

  608. it's not that

  609. it's uncomfortable

  610. for me,

  611. it's that it's sinful,

  612. it's that it's teaching

  613. false truths

  614. through your actions

  615. and leading other people

  616. into that false truth

  617. as well.

  618. Peter was,

  619. yeah,

  620. his actions

  621. were saying,

  622. God shows,

  623. God plays favorites,

  624. so I'm going to

  625. play favorites too.

  626. And the thing is,

  627. Peter knew

  628. and understood

  629. the gospel.

  630. His issue wasn't,

  631. I don't understand

  632. who Jesus is

  633. or what Jesus has done.

  634. Paul doesn't come to him

  635. and say,

  636. Peter,

  637. let's get your theology straight.

  638. He comes to him

  639. and says,

  640. Peter,

  641. here's what you believe,

  642. here's what that should

  643. look like in your life

  644. and they don't line up.

  645. Peter's actions

  646. were not in line

  647. with Peter's beliefs.

  648. And because of that,

  649. he was acting in sin,

  650. he was play acting.

  651. And Paul calls him back

  652. to the truth

  653. of the gospel.

  654. And again,

  655. I think

  656. this is so universal.

  657. You believe one thing,

  658. you live another.

  659. I believe one thing,

  660. I live another.

  661. Right?

  662. Think about it.

  663. Like,

  664. it can be so easy

  665. to sit here in church

  666. and listen to a sermon

  667. on how God loves everyone,

  668. rich and poor.

  669. How everyone is

  670. brothers and sisters in Christ

  671. regardless of how much money

  672. we have in the bank.

  673. And then we go out

  674. after church

  675. and throughout the week,

  676. the only people we eat with

  677. are the rich ones.

  678. Because that's who

  679. our rich friends

  680. want us to eat with.

  681. We don't want

  682. our millionaire friends

  683. to see that we're eating

  684. with people in poverty.

  685. Or if we do,

  686. we're doing it

  687. out of charity

  688. and a desire to help them.

  689. Not out of an understanding

  690. that they're our brothers

  691. and sisters in Christ.

  692. Not out of an understanding

  693. that we are fundamentally

  694. equals in God.

  695. We let

  696. what other people think about us

  697. control our behavior.

  698. fear.

  699. And it's fundamentally

  700. opposed

  701. to the truth

  702. of the gospel.

  703. So we've seen

  704. fear of man

  705. and people pleasing

  706. is universal.

  707. It's fundamentally

  708. opposed to the gospel.

  709. But what's the solution?

  710. The solution

  711. for fear of man,

  712. the solution

  713. for people pleasing,

  714. is a bigger understanding

  715. of who God is.

  716. the only solution

  717. for the fear of man

  718. is a bigger view

  719. of God

  720. in our lives.

  721. See,

  722. Peter's fundamental problem

  723. in his behavior

  724. here in this passage

  725. is not belief.

  726. We already covered that.

  727. He believed

  728. the right things

  729. about God.

  730. His problem

  731. is a problem

  732. of fear.

  733. He feared

  734. what these people

  735. thought about him

  736. more than he feared

  737. what God thought about him.

  738. Peter sort of has

  739. a recurring issue

  740. with this

  741. throughout his life.

  742. On the night

  743. that Jesus was

  744. betrayed,

  745. they were at dinner,

  746. like Tobin was talking

  747. about earlier.

  748. They're at dinner.

  749. Jesus says,

  750. you're all gonna

  751. turn away from me.

  752. And Peter says,

  753. no way.

  754. Even if I have to die,

  755. I will never

  756. turn away from you.

  757. A couple hours later,

  758. he's out there

  759. and this little

  760. servant girl

  761. comes up to him.

  762. She's like,

  763. didn't I see you

  764. as Jesus?

  765. And he's like,

  766. no!

  767. Three times.

  768. A couple hours

  769. after saying,

  770. Jesus,

  771. I would never

  772. deny you,

  773. he does it

  774. three times

  775. out of fear

  776. of a little

  777. servant girl.

  778. Peter is operating

  779. out of fear,

  780. not out of the truth

  781. that he knows

  782. and believes.

  783. And I think with us,

  784. it's the same thing.

  785. Our problems

  786. with obedience

  787. a lot of times

  788. don't come out

  789. of wrong beliefs.

  790. They come out

  791. of fear.

  792. You know,

  793. when I was in high school,

  794. I would sit at lunch

  795. with my friends

  796. and we'd be talking

  797. and hanging out

  798. and every day

  799. I saw this one kid

  800. across the cafeteria

  801. sitting by himself

  802. at this table.

  803. And I was in a big school

  804. so sitting by yourself

  805. at a table

  806. in the cafeteria

  807. was kind of

  808. an accomplishment

  809. because it was squished.

  810. And I would look

  811. over there every day

  812. and I would think,

  813. this kid's probably

  814. pretty lonely.

  815. This kid probably

  816. needs a friend.

  817. But then,

  818. the other kids

  819. at my table

  820. would also notice

  821. this kid.

  822. And they'd say things like,

  823. you know,

  824. he's probably sitting

  825. over there alone

  826. because he's a serial killer.

  827. And now,

  828. obviously,

  829. I didn't believe

  830. that this kid

  831. was a serial killer.

  832. I also didn't want

  833. people saying

  834. that Eric is probably

  835. a serial killer.

  836. killer.

  837. And so,

  838. I learned

  839. out of fear

  840. of other people

  841. to stay away

  842. from that kid.

  843. Even though I knew

  844. this kid's probably lonely,

  845. this kid probably

  846. needs friends,

  847. I let the fear

  848. of what other people

  849. would say

  850. control me

  851. and I stayed away

  852. from him.

  853. Or how about

  854. when we have friends

  855. who aren't Christians

  856. and we say,

  857. they need to know

  858. about Jesus.

  859. It's the loving thing

  860. to do

  861. to tell them

  862. about Jesus.

  863. If what we believe

  864. about Jesus is true,

  865. the loving thing

  866. to do for our friends

  867. is to tell them

  868. about him.

  869. But what are they

  870. going to think about me

  871. if they find out

  872. that I actually

  873. believe that?

  874. How are they

  875. going to respond?

  876. Is that going to

  877. make them mad at me?

  878. We get afraid

  879. and we don't say anything.

  880. Or,

  881. we know

  882. that it's wrong

  883. to oppress the poor.

  884. But our boss

  885. wants us

  886. to make a deal

  887. at work

  888. that will make

  889. our company

  890. millions of dollars

  891. by exploiting

  892. the vulnerabilities

  893. of the poor.

  894. We fundamentally

  895. know the truth

  896. that it's wrong

  897. to oppress the poor,

  898. but we're afraid

  899. that if we oppose

  900. our boss,

  901. he could let us go.

  902. He'll go out

  903. and find someone else

  904. who will make that deal

  905. and make the money

  906. for the company.

  907. And how do we act?

  908. How often do we go along

  909. with that deal

  910. even when we know

  911. that it's wrong

  912. out of a fear

  913. of what our boss

  914. desires of us?

  915. Our issue

  916. is an issue

  917. of fear.

  918. We fear other people

  919. too much.

  920. We fear God

  921. too little.

  922. And the solution

  923. is to get

  924. a bigger vision

  925. and picture

  926. of who God is.

  927. And when we get that,

  928. it'll free us

  929. from being afraid

  930. of what other people

  931. think of us.

  932. There's a counselor,

  933. a Christian counselor

  934. in the States

  935. named Ed Welch.

  936. And he says,

  937. anything that erodes

  938. the fear of God

  939. will intensify

  940. the fear of man

  941. in our lives.

  942. Anything that erodes

  943. the fear of God

  944. will intensify

  945. the fear of man

  946. in our lives.

  947. we need to be intentional

  948. about building up

  949. our understanding

  950. of who God is,

  951. building up

  952. a healthy and proper

  953. fear of God

  954. in our lives.

  955. Now this idea

  956. of the fear of the Lord

  957. is not very popular today.

  958. We want God

  959. to be friendly

  960. and cuddly and cute

  961. and we do not want

  962. God to be terrifying.

  963. And so we sort of

  964. try to avoid this issue,

  965. avoid talking about

  966. the fear of the Lord.

  967. We try and redefine it

  968. and say,

  969. fear of the Lord

  970. means reverent awe

  971. and obedience.

  972. And while yes,

  973. those are important parts

  974. of the fear of the Lord,

  975. if you look biblically

  976. at the concept

  977. of the fear of the Lord

  978. and what happens

  979. when people in the Bible

  980. interact with God,

  981. reverent awe

  982. barely scratches the surface

  983. of what's actually

  984. going on there.

  985. So I want to go through

  986. a couple passages

  987. in the Bible

  988. where people have

  989. encounters with God

  990. to show us

  991. what type of reactions

  992. they have,

  993. what the fear of the Lord

  994. looks like

  995. in a concrete manner

  996. in their life.

  997. so that hopefully

  998. we can work on developing

  999. the fear of God

  1000. in our lives.

  1001. The first passage

1002. I want us to look at

  1003. is in Isaiah 6.

  1004. So the prophet Isaiah,

  1005. it's the year

  1006. that King Uzziah dies,

  1007. and the prophet Isaiah

  1008. is in the temple,

1009. and he has this vision,

1010. and he sees the Lord

  1011. seated on the throne.

  1012. And there are angels

  1013. around God.

  1014. Now in other passages

  1015. in the Bible,

1016. we see that when men

  1017. come into contact

  1018. with angels,

  1019. they're so terrified

1020. that they want to fall down

  1021. and worship the angels

  1022. themselves.

  1023. But the angels here

  1024. are in God's presence.

  1025. And every angel

  1026. has six wings,

  1027. and God's presence

  1028. is so overwhelming

  1029. that the angels

1030. need to use two wings

  1031. to cover their faces

  1032. to protect them

1033. from how amazing God is.

  1034. And then they need

  1035. to use two wings

  1036. to cover their feet

  1037. because God's presence

  1038. is so overwhelming

  1039. and amazing.

1040. And Isaiah sees this vision,

  1041. and he says,

  1042. when God speaks,

  1043. his voice shakes

  1044. the foundation

  1045. of the building

  1046. that he is in.

  1047. And Isaiah doesn't go,

  1048. whoa, cool,

  1049. I have seen God.

  1050. I should write

  1051. a best-selling book

  1052. about this.

  1053. He doesn't say,

  1054. hey, God,

  1055. I have a question for you.

  1056. You know,

  1057. my retirement account

  1058. isn't doing too well.

  1059. Explain that to me.

  1060. No, Isaiah looks

  1061. and he sees God

  1062. and his response is,

  1063. oh, crap,

  1064. I'm going to die.

  1065. His exact words are,

  1066. woe is me,

  1067. for I'm a man

  1068. of unclean lips

  1069. and I live among

1070. a people of unclean lips

  1071. and my eyes

  1072. have seen the king.

  1073. When Isaiah comes

  1074. face to face

  1075. with God,

1076. he fears for his life.

  1077. He is terrified.

  1078. He is shaking.

  1079. He thinks

  1080. he is never going

  1081. to wake up again

  1082. tomorrow

  1083. because God's presence

  1084. is so amazing

  1085. and overwhelming.

  1086. That's just one example.

  1087. Maybe he overreacted.

  1088. Let's go to Job.

  1089. For those of you

  1090. who know nothing

  1091. about Job,

  1092. Job was a man

  1093. in the Old Testament

  1094. and at the start

1095. of the story of Job,

  1096. God says,

1097. Job is the most righteous man

  1098. in the entire world.

1099. Literally the best person alive.

1100. He is the most righteous man

  1101. by God's standard.

  1102. And Satan comes in

  1103. and tests Job

1104. and tries to get him

1105. to turn away from God.

  1106. He takes away

  1107. all of his wealth,

1108. kills all of his children,

  1109. and gives him

  1110. a painful disease

  1111. that he can't cure.

  1112. And Job's friends come

  1113. and they spend most

1114. of the book of Job

  1115. just talking about

  1116. why would this happen

  1117. to Job.

1118. His friends are all sure

  1119. that it's karma,

  1120. that he's done something

  1121. terrible to deserve this.

1122. And Job the entire time

  1123. is like,

1124. let me make my case to God.

  1125. Let me tell God

  1126. why I don't deserve this.

  1127. Because God knows.

1128. And then at the end

  1129. of the book,

  1130. in chapter 38,

  1131. God steps in.

  1132. And he gives Job

  1133. the response

1134. that Job has been waiting

  1135. for the entire time.

  1136. God's response

  1137. lasts for four chapters.

  1138. And he starts out

1139. with a question for Job.

  1140. Hey Job,

  1141. where were you

  1142. when I laid

  1143. the foundations

  1144. of the earth?

  1145. It's gotta be

  1146. an awkward moment.

  1147. I think if I was Job,

  1148. I'd just feel like,

  1149. I'm done.

  1150. I'm out.

  1151. Job lasts two chapters

  1152. of questions

  1153. before he says anything

1154. and God doesn't let him

  1155. off the hook there.

1156. He goes on for another

  1157. two chapters

  1158. just explaining

  1159. how big

  1160. and powerful

  1161. and amazing

  1162. he is.

  1163. I'll give you

  1164. a summary

  1165. of the first chapter,

  1166. some of the highlights,

1167. and then you can read

  1168. the other three chapters

  1169. for yourself.

  1170. In the first chapter,

  1171. God tells us

  1172. that he sets

  1173. where the shores

1174. would be for the ocean.

  1175. He says,

  1176. hey waves,

  1177. you stop here

  1178. and they listen.

  1179. He then tells us

  1180. that he commands

  1181. the sun to rise

  1182. and it obeys him.

  1183. Hey son,

  1184. get up.

  1185. Okay.

  1186. I don't have that power

  1187. and none of you

  1188. have that power.

  1189. God has that power.

1190. It says that he prepares

  1191. storehouses of snow

  1192. and hail

1193. to send to the earth.

  1194. He just has it

  1195. ready to go.

1196. Sends it when he wants to.

  1197. He sends rain

  1198. on the desert.

  1199. If any of us

  1200. had that power

  1201. we would be billionaires.

  1202. God has that power.

  1203. He controls

  1204. the paths

  1205. of the stars.

  1206. He says,

  1207. Orion,

  1208. you go here

  1209. and he does.

  1210. And he gives food

  1211. to the animals.

  1212. He provides prey

  1213. for the lions

  1214. and the ravens.

  1215. That's one chapter

  1216. out of four

  1217. of God explaining

  1218. to Job

  1219. how amazing

  1220. he is.

  1221. And when we reach

  1222. the end

  1223. of the four chapters

  1224. of explanation

  1225. we get Job's response.

  1226. This is the response

  1227. from the best

  1228. man alive

  1229. when he has

  1230. encountered God.

  1231. I had heard

  1232. of you

  1233. by the hearing

  1234. of my ear

  1235. but now

  1236. my eyes

  1237. sees you

  1238. therefore

  1239. I despise

  1240. myself

  1241. and I repent

  1242. in dust

  1243. and ashes.

  1244. When the most

  1245. righteous man

  1246. alive

  1247. sees how big

  1248. and powerful

  1249. God is

  1250. he says

  1251. I hate myself

  1252. because I am

  1253. so much worse

  1254. than you.

  1255. I am so much

  1256. smaller

  1257. than you are.

  1258. I can't

  1259. I can't

  1260. bear

  1261. myself.

  1262. But that's

  1263. the Old Testament.

  1264. What about Jesus?

  1265. Isn't he cuddly

  1266. and cute

  1267. and friendly

  1268. and walking

  1269. around with a sheep

  1270. in his arms

  1271. all the time?

  1272. Let's look

  1273. at the New Testament.

  1274. Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  1275. Jesus is teaching

  1276. and the crowds

  1277. are pushing

  1278. around him

  1279. and he's backing up

  1280. and he gets

  1281. to the edge

  1282. of the lake

  1283. and he can't

  1284. go any further back.

  1285. So he climbs

  1286. into a boat

  1287. and he has them

1288. push out a little bit

  1289. and he keeps teaching

  1290. and at one point

  1291. during his teaching

1292. he turns to the fisherman

  1293. and he says

1294. hey stick your net down

1295. over the side of the boat

1296. to try and catch some fish

1297. and the fishermen are like

  1298. you know Jesus

  1299. we've been out here

  1300. all night long

  1301. and haven't really

  1302. caught anything

  1303. but whatever

  1304. we'll do it

  1305. and they start

  1306. pulling up the net

1307. and it's so full of fish

1308. that the net is breaking

  1309. and their friends

1310. have to come help them

  1311. get all the fish

1312. and one of the fishermen

  1313. a guy named Peter

  1314. turns to Jesus

  1315. and falls down

  1316. on his knees

  1317. and says

1318. get away from me Lord

  1319. for I am a sinful man.

  1320. He sees that Jesus

  1321. has power

  1322. over the ability

  1323. to catch fish

  1324. and he's so terrified

  1325. that he no longer

1326. wants to be in his presence

  1327. because he recognizes

  1328. how big

  1329. and powerful

  1330. Jesus is.

  1331. Or how about

  1332. Mark chapter 4

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  1333. Jesus and the disciples

  1334. many of the disciples

  1335. by the way

  1336. were fishermen

  1337. so they had plenty

  1338. of experience

  1339. in boats

  1340. they're on a boat

  1341. and there's a big storm

  1342. and the boat

  1343. is filling with water

  1344. and the disciples

  1345. are terrified

  1346. this boat

  1347. is going to sink

  1348. and Jesus

  1349. is napping

  1350. and so the disciples

  1351. go wake up Jesus

  1352. and they're like

  1353. Jesus don't you care

  1354. that we're going

  1355. to drown?

  1356. So Jesus gets up

  1357. he goes

  1358. and rebukes

1359. the wind and the waves

  1360. he says

  1361. peace be still

  1362. and they do

  1363. the wind stops

  1364. the sea becomes

  1365. smooth as glass

1366. and something that I love

  1367. the disciples

  1368. it says

  1369. before

  1370. when the storm

  1371. was happening

  1372. they were afraid

  1373. because they thought

1374. they were going to die

  1375. and then Jesus

  1376. stops the storm

  1377. and they're safe

  1378. and then they become

  1379. greatly afraid

  1380. the storm is gone

1381. and they are more afraid

1382. because they look at this guy

  1383. on the boat

  1384. with them

  1385. and they say

  1386. who is this guy?

  1387. the wind

  1388. and the ocean

  1389. listen to him

  1390. the wind

  1391. and the ocean

  1392. obey

  1393. his commandments

  1394. everywhere in the Bible

  1395. that people have

  1396. encounters with God

  1397. they are terrified

  1398. because of how big

  1399. God is

  1400. everywhere in the Bible

  1401. that people have

  1402. encounters with God

  1403. their lives are transformed

  1404. because they recognize

  1405. God is bigger

1406. than I ever imagined before

1407. and the Bible tells us

  1408. that one day

1409. every single one of us

  1410. is going to stand

  1411. before God

  1412. one day

  1413. every one of us

1414. is going to see him

  1415. just like Isaiah did

  1416. and Job did

  1417. and Jesus' disciples

  1418. had glimpses of

1419. but I think most of us

  1420. don't live our lives

1421. with that fact in mind

  1422. most of us

  1423. are more concerned

  1424. about what our boss

  1425. or our spouse

  1426. or our children

  1427. or our friends

  1428. think about us today

  1429. than we are

  1430. about what God

  1431. is going to think

  1432. about us

  1433. on that day

  1434. we shrink down God

  1435. but God

1436. is not going to be shrunk

  1437. God is big

  1438. God is powerful

  1439. God is in charge

  1440. and again

  1441. I think this idea

1442. can be scary for us

1443. of the fear of God

  1444. but really it's not

  1445. because if you look

  1446. back at the story

  1447. in Luke chapter 5

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  1448. when Peter

  1449. falls down

  1450. before Jesus

  1451. and he says

  1452. get away from me

  1453. because I'm a sinful man

  1454. Jesus' response to him

1455. I think is the same

1456. as Jesus' response to us

  1457. he says

  1458. fear not

  1459. now that you've seen

1460. how big and powerful I am

1461. I want you to know

  1462. something about me

  1463. I love you

  1464. I'm for you

  1465. not against you

  1466. and I've proven that

  1467. by giving my life

  1468. for you

  1469. I'm not looking

1470. for you to slip up

1471. so I can catch you

  1472. and get you

  1473. no I love you

  1474. I want what's best

  1475. for you

  1476. you don't need

  1477. to tremble in fear

  1478. because I'm your father

  1479. I'm your friend

  1480. but before he says

  1481. that to us

  1482. we have to come

  1483. to a point

  1484. where we recognize

  1485. how big

  1486. and powerful

  1487. he is

  1488. and when we come

  1489. to that point

  1490. where we realize

  1491. how big and powerful

  1492. God is

  1493. it frees us

  1494. from fearing

  1495. anything else

  1496. when I recognize

  1497. that the God

  1498. who rules the universe

  1499. who sells the sun

1500. to get up in the morning

1501. and it listens to him

  1502. is for me

  1503. not against me

1504. that nothing can separate me

  1505. from his love

  1506. not my boss

  1507. not my spouse

  1508. not my parents

  1509. not my children

1510. not my teachers at school

  1511. not the friends

1512. that I eat lunch with

  1513. nothing can separate me

  1514. from his love

  1515. I'm free from living

  1516. for their approval

  1517. I'm free to live

  1518. in obedience to him

1519. and obedience to him alone

  1520. and yet so often

  1521. we shrink him down

  1522. we avoid

1523. seeing how big he is

  1524. and we become

  1525. obsessed

  1526. with what other people

  1527. think about us

  1528. because we've forgotten

1529. how big our God is

  1530. there's a pastor

  1531. in the states

  1532. named Francis Chan

  1533. and he says

  1534. if we don't stare

  1535. at God

  1536. we spend our time

  1537. staring at lesser things

  1538. namely ourselves

1539. we need to be intentional

  1540. about looking

  1541. at who God is

  1542. looking at how big

  1543. God is

  1544. developing a fear

1545. of God in our lives

  1546. because if we don't

  1547. our lives become

  1548. focused on ourselves

1549. we are the biggest thing

  1550. that we can see

  1551. and when we are

  1552. the biggest thing

  1553. that we can see

  1554. the people around us

  1555. have disproportionate power

  1556. over our ability

  1557. to live our lives

  1558. for God

1559. I know some of you

  1560. may be thinking

  1561. Eric

  1562. you've lost it

  1563. like these accounts

  1564. in the Bible

  1565. they're obviously

  1566. blown out of proportion

  1567. God's not really

  1568. that big

  1569. God's not really

  1570. that powerful

  1571. but here's the thing

  1572. this is the picture

  1573. the Bible consistently

  1574. draws of who

  1575. God is

  1576. and if the Bible

  1577. is lying to us

  1578. about how big

  1579. God

  1580. its main character

  1581. is

  1582. and we can't trust

  1583. it on that point

  1584. what can we trust

  1585. it for?

  1586. if we don't believe

  1587. what the Bible

  1588. says about who

  1589. God is

1590. then why are we here?

  1591. why are we singing

  1592. songs about

  1593. a powerless

  1594. and weak God?

  1595. why are we

  1596. identifying ourselves

  1597. with a God

  1598. who's

  1599. weak at best

  1600. fake at worst

  1601. but if the Bible

  1602. is true

  1603. if what the Bible

  1604. says about God

  1605. is true

  1606. then we're wasting

  1607. our lives

  1608. by ignoring

  1609. the truth

  1610. that it contains

  1611. we're wasting

  1612. our lives

  1613. by believing

  1614. in our minds

  1615. that God

  1616. is big

  1617. but living

  1618. with our lives

  1619. as if

  1620. he's small

  1621. and pathetic

  1622. we need

  1623. to cultivate

  1624. a fear

  1625. of God

  1626. in our lives

  1627. we need

  1628. to have

  1629. a bigger

  1630. more accurate

  1631. picture

  1632. of who

  1633. God

  1634. is

  1635. and that's

  1636. the only thing

  1637. that will free us

  1638. from fear

  1639. of man

  1640. and people

  1641. pleasing

  1642. so I have a few

  1643. takeaway points

  1644. and questions

  1645. that we can think

  1646. about this week

  1647. as we go

  1648. throughout our weeks

  1649. the first

  1650. when you're at

  1651. work or school

  1652. or with friends

  1653. ask yourself

  1654. who do I fear

  1655. more

  1656. this person

  1657. or God

  1658. do I believe

  1659. that this person

  1660. has more

  1661. control

  1662. over my future

  1663. than God

  1664. does

  1665. do I believe

  1666. that my overall

  1667. well-being

  1668. is more dependent

  1669. on this person

  1670. than on God

  1671. and when you

  1672. find yourself

  1673. in a situation

  1674. where you are

  1675. acting

  1676. out of fear

  1677. of man

  1678. where you are

  1679. acting to try

  1680. and please

  1681. the people

  1682. around you

  1683. ask yourself

  1684. what am I

  1685. believing wrongly

  1686. about God

  1687. that's leading

  1688. me to act

  1689. this way

  1690. what am I

  1691. believing wrongly

  1692. about God

  1693. that's leading

  1694. me to act

  1695. this way

  1696. another huge

  1697. thing that we

  1698. can do

  1699. is spend time

  1700. this week

  1701. in our Bibles

  1702. just learning

  1703. about how

  1704. big God

  1705. is

  1706. it's written

  1707. throughout the

  1708. Bible

  1709. that God

  1710. is huge

  1711. the Bible

  1712. starts with

  1713. the story

  1714. of him

  1715. creating the

  1716. world

  1717. and it

  1718. culminates

  1719. with him

  1720. with the

  1721. story of

  1722. him

  1723. renewing

  1724. the world

  1725. and in

  1726. between

  1727. there's

  1728. story after

  1729. story of

  1730. him being

  1731. in control

  1732. of him

  1733. working

  1734. in situations

  1735. and through

  1736. situations

  1737. that you

  1738. look at

  1739. at first

  1740. and you're

  1741. like that's

  1742. hopeless

  1743. and then you

  1744. remember

  1745. oh wait

  1746. God is

  1747. big

  1748. God is

  1749. in control

  1750. and as

  1751. you come

  1752. to parts

  1753. in the

  1754. Bible

  1755. where people

  1756. have these

  1757. interactions

  1758. with God

  1759. ask yourselves

  1760. some questions

  1761. how many of

  1762. these people

  1763. when they have

  1764. these interactions

  1765. with God

  1766. approach it

  1767. casually

  1768. nonchalantly

  1769. no big deal

  1770. how many of

  1771. these people

  1772. when they have

  1773. these interactions

  1774. with God

  1775. are terrified

  1776. for their

  1777. lives

  1778. I'll give you

  1779. a hint

  1780. the second

  1781. one is way

  1782. bigger than

  1783. the first

  1784. group

  1785. how many

  1786. of the people

  1787. that have

  1788. these interactions

  1789. and encounters

  1790. with God

  1791. remain unchanged

  1792. after their

  1793. encounter

  1794. and what

  1795. about God

  1796. and his

  1797. bigness

  1798. makes them

  1799. react

  1800. the way

  1801. that they

  1802. do

  1803. until we

  1804. fear God

  1805. properly

  1806. we will

  1807. always be

  1808. controlled

  1809. by what

  1810. other people

  1811. think of us

  1812. by what

  1813. other people

  1814. want from

  1815. us

  1816. the fact

  1817. that all

  1818. of us

  1819. have this

  1820. natural

  1821. tendency

  1822. towards

  1823. people

  1824. pleasing

  1825. is a

  1826. sign

  1827. that we

  1828. don't

  1829. properly

  1830. understand

  1831. who

  1832. God

  1833. is

  1834. that it's

  1835. not

  1836. impacting

  1837. our

  1838. lives

  1839. like it

  1840. should

  1841. be

  1842. but once

  1843. we fear

  1844. God

  1845. properly

  1846. we'll be

  1847. free

  1848. from caring

  1849. about what

  1850. others think

  1851. and needing

  1852. to impress

  1853. them

  1854. at the

  1855. expense

  1856. of obeying

  1857. God

  1858. God

  1859. there's

  1860. this

  1861. great

  1862. saint

  1863. back

  1864. in the

  1865. day

  1866. named

  1867. saint

  1868. augustine

  1869. he has

  1870. a quote

  1871. that I

  1872. think

  1873. sort of

  1874. summarizes

  1875. this issue

  1876. very well

  1877. he says

  1878. God

  1879. you have

  1880. made us

  1881. for yourself

  1882. and our

  1883. hearts

  1884. are restless

  1885. trying to

  1886. please

  1887. people

  1888. trying to

  1889. keep

  1890. people

  1891. satisfied

  1892. serving

  1893. a million

  1894. different

  1895. bosses

  1896. who have

  1897. control

  1898. over us

  1899. our hearts

  1900. are restless

  1901. until they

  1902. rest in

  1903. you

  1904. let's

  1905. pray

  1906. Father

  1907. we thank

  1908. you for

  1909. your love

  1910. we thank

  1911. you that

  1912. you are

  1913. big

  1914. and that

  1915. you love

  1916. us and

  1917. offer us

  1918. an opportunity

  1919. to know

  1920. you

  1921. we thank

  1922. you that

  1923. you are

  1924. powerful

  1925. and in

  1926. control

  1927. and that

  1928. when we

  1929. fear you

  1930. we don't

  1931. need to

  1932. fear anything

  1933. else

  1934. and that

  1935. when we

  1936. fear you

  1937. we get

  1938. to know

  1939. that you

  1940. love us

  1941. and you

  1942. are for

  1943. us

  1944. and you're

  1945. not out

  1946. to get

  1947. us

  1948. God I

  1949. pray this

  1950. week that

  1951. we would

  1952. develop a

  1953. bigger view

  1954. of you

  1955. that we

  1956. would fall

  1957. in love

  1958. with a

  1959. proper

  1960. understanding

  1961. of who

  1962. you are

  1963. that we

  1964. would be

  1965. free from

  1966. living to

  1967. please

  1968. others

  1969. because we

  1970. know that

  1971. you are

  1972. for us

  1973. and that

  1974. nothing can

  1975. separate us
