  1. Father, even as we stand or sit here this morning, you know the different desires that are rattling around within us.

  2. Father, you know that some of us have desires and longings which we're trying to push away, and we should try to push away.

  3. Some of us, Father, have desires within that we should be pushing away, but in fact we're not at all.

  4. Some of us, Father, have desires that we're confused about.

  5. Some of us, Father, have desires that we know are good and we puzzle over them.

  6. And Father, we could go on about our desires, but Father, we know as we stand or sit in your presence this morning that you know the desires of our hearts,

  7. that you look into each and every single one of us who is here and see, you see what is going on in terms of our desires and our longings and our yearnings,

  8. our imagination, our fears.

  9. Father, we acknowledge before you that you are sovereign, that you are good, that you are kind, that you are filled with mercy, that you are mercy.

  10. And we invite and give you permission, Father, for you to speak into our lives today, this morning, that your word would speak into our lives,

  11. that you, Father, that you would fan into our desires that we should have, that you would help us turn from desires that we should not have.

  12. And Father, we invite you to come into our lives and into our desires.

  13. And we ask that you would do that in a saving way and in a sovereign way.

  14. And so, Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us as we hear your word.

  15. Work in us.

  16. And this we ask in Jesus' name, your Son and our Savior.

  17. Amen.

  18. Please be seated.

  19. Oops.

  20. Oops.

  21. I have sort of a bit of an apology.

  22. Not an apology.

  23. Sort of a bit of a clarification or qualification of something that I said last week.

  24. I made a slightly disparaging remark last Sunday.

  25. Just slightly disparaging about radio preachers in the book of Revelation.

  26. And after the service, somebody pointed out to me that I'm a radio preacher.

  27. And the person who pointed it out to me, not only that they'd known this, it would have been even funnier,

  28. but if you listen to the last two times I spoke on the radio, I spoke on the book of Revelation.

  29. And in fact, on Tuesday, I go in to take my next sessions, and I'm going to speak on the book of Revelation.

  30. So it's sort of a funny type of humbling thing for me to have made a disparaging comment about myself.

  31. But you can pray for me.

  32. On Tuesday morning, I tape some sessions.

  33. I share a spot on CFRA radio at 6.30 in the morning, Sunday mornings, with three other pastors.

  34. And so approximately every fourth week, I'm on the radio at 6.30 in the morning on CFRA on Sundays.

  35. And so you can pray for me about that.

  36. When can we begin?

  37. That's sort of a very, very common type of question.

  38. People might sort of wonder, when can we begin a family?

  39. When will life really begin?

  40. There's an old joke, maybe you've heard it before.

  41. A rabbi, an Anglican minister, and a Catholic priest were walking along,

  42. and they were having an argument about when life began.

  43. And the Anglican minister said, oh, you know, life begins when the baby comes out of the womb.

  44. And the Catholic priest said, no, no, no, that's a terrible thing to say.

  45. Life begins at conception.

  46. And then the rabbi smiled and said, you're both wrong.

  47. Life begins when the kids move out and the dog dies.

  48. Anyway, so we constantly ask the question, when will life begin?

  49. When can we start doing things?

  50. When can we, you know, start working on a mortgage?

  51. When can we save money?

  52. When could we tithe?

  53. When can we be generous?

  54. When can we begin a relationship that could be permanent?

  55. We as a church, on one level, are always sort of struggling a little bit with when we can begin.

  56. In particular, since we walked away from our building two and a half years ago

  57. and moved into rental facilities and stuff like that,

  58. it often seems as if certain types of ministries and all can't begin

  59. until certain other external things start to happen.

  60. And the Bible text that we look at today, it doesn't answer all of the questions about when we begin,

  61. but it does have some actually very, very interesting and powerful things to say to churches

  62. and to Christians in terms of at least part of the Christian life and church life

  63. in terms of when certain things can and should begin.

  64. So it would be a great help to me if you turn in your Bibles to Revelation 7.

  65. Revelation chapter 7.

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  66. And let's hear what the Bible has to say about this.

  67. Some of you who might not know some things about our church,

  68. two and a half years ago we walked away from our building

  69. and separated away from the Anglican Church of Canada.

  70. And part of the reason we did that was to be connected to the global Anglican Futures movement

  71. of which we are a part.

  72. And, you know, for somebody like myself,

  73. who spent all of his life up until two and a half years ago

  74. being in churches with buildings,

  75. it's a real learning curve,

  76. trying to have an imagination and a will

  77. which reflects not owning property.

  78. And I know that there's a lot of people who get excited by that,

  79. but some sort of struggle with it.

  80. And this text, believe it or not,

  81. will sort of speak into it a little bit,

  82. at least in terms of how we should pray.

  83. And here's how it begins.

  84. Revelation chapter 7, verse 1.

    Revelation 7:1

  85. After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth.

  86. Actually, you know what?

  87. Let's go up a few verses

  88. to what's just happened before this.

  89. What's happened in the book of Revelation?

  90. In our church we preach through books of the Bible generally.

  91. That's how we,

  92. that's sort of what we do on Sundays.

  93. And so we're going through the book of Revelation.

  94. And, you know, in chapter 1 you sort of get an introduction to the book.

  95. Chapter 2 and 3 there's stories or words that Jesus has to seven different churches.

  96. In a sense that's seven different ways to enter into the book of Revelation.

  97. Sort of almost like an examination of conscience

  98. that challenges us as we go into the rest of the book of Revelation.

  99. And then in chapter 4 there's a vision of God in heaven.

  100. Chapter 5 there's a vision of Jesus in heaven.

  101. And then last week we looked at chapter 6,

  102. which is that the same one who redeems us,

  103. which is Jesus,

  104. is the one who has control over the future.

  105. From the moment of the crucifixion and resurrection

  106. until he comes back,

  107. that the same one who redeems us

  108. is the one who controls the future.

  109. And so last week we saw these judgments of God

  110. that were coming out.

  111. And in chapter 6,

  112. that's what we're just going to do,

  113. it's like the sixth judgment is the sixth seal is opened.

  114. And just look maybe at verse 14.

  115. This is the sixth seal,

  116. the sixth sort of judgment,

  117. the sixth thing which is sort of happening on the earth.

  118. And it says,

  119. the sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up

  120. and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

  121. Then the kings of the earth and the great ones

  122. and the generals and the rich and the powerful

  123. and everyone,

  124. slave and free,

  125. hid themselves in the caves

  126. and among the rocks of the mountains,

  127. calling to the mountains and rocks,

  128. fall on us and hide us from the face of him

  129. who is seated on the throne

  130. and from the wrath of the Lamb.

  131. For the great day of the wrath has come

  132. and who can stand.

  133. And that's sort of where the action's taken us to right now.

  134. And it's a very, very gripping type of image.

  135. It's an image of,

  136. in some ways,

  137. all of the people on the earth

  138. who've turned their back on Jesus

  139. and the offer of redemption.

  140. And they have,

  141. there's chaos going on all around them

  142. on a physical level.

  143. And they have this sense

  144. that they're somehow under the judgment of God.

  145. And at the same time

  146. that they have this sense

  147. that they're under the judgment of God,

  148. they also have a sense of his face.

  149. That it's his face,

  150. that it's God responsible for this.

  151. And they actually even have a sense of his face.

  152. Not just his presence,

  153. but his face.

  154. And the mystery of the text

  155. is that even though they have this sense

  156. of the face of God looking at them

  157. in this time of chaos,

  158. they turn not to the face of God,

  159. but to a rock

  160. and say to the rock,

  161. hide us.

  162. Who can stand?

  163. It's a very, very gripping image.

  164. That they turn their back

  165. on the face of God.

  166. They have this sense.

  167. How many people would love to have

  168. a sense

  169. or to see the face of God?

  170. And the text implies

  171. that these people

  172. in some ways

  173. know the sense,

  174. the face of God,

  175. but turn from the face of God

  176. to speak to rocks.

  177. That they be delivered.

  178. And then it's right after that,

  179. verse 7,

  180. chapter 7, verse 1.

  181. And after this,

  182. I saw four angels

  183. standing at the four corners of the earth,

  184. holding back

  185. the four winds of the earth

  186. that no wind might blow

  187. on the earth or sea

  188. or against any tree.

  189. Then I saw another angel

  190. ascending from the rising of the sun

  191. with the seal

  192. of the living God.

  193. And he called with a loud voice

  194. to the four angels

  195. who had been given power

  196. to harm earth and sea,

  197. saying,

  198. do not harm the earth

  199. or the sea

  200. or the trees

  201. until we have sealed

  202. the servants

  203. of our God

  204. on their foreheads.

  205. Now just sort of pause here

  206. for a second.

  207. You know,

  208. I watch lots of movies.

  209. Not all good movies as well.

  210. I don't know how many of you

  211. have seen the X-Men movies.

  212. But if you've seen

  213. the X-Men movies,

  214. you have an insight

  215. to this biblical text

  216. that the rest of you

  217. don't have.

  218. And that is,

  219. for those of you

  220. who've seen the X-Men movies,

  221. what is it that Dr. X can do?

  222. You know how one of the things

  223. that Dr. X can do

  224. is let's say,

  225. you know,

  226. we're all doing this

  227. and I'm up here

  228. and all of a sudden

  229. Dr. X,

  230. I don't know,

  231. Wolverine's going to come

  232. wandering in the room

  233. and I'm,

  234. all of a sudden,

  235. I freeze,

  236. we all freeze.

  237. It's as if

  238. for the whole room

  239. he has the power

  240. to suspend time

  241. and it's almost as if

  242. for those who he wants,

  243. they're outside of time

  244. for a moment

  245. and they can,

  246. you know,

  247. they can walk around

  248. the cafeteria,

  249. you know,

  250. juice or pop

  251. is being thrown

  252. and it all stops

  253. and they can have

  254. this conversation

  255. that goes on

  256. while there's chaos

  257. or other things going on

  258. that's all just stopped

  259. and that's the image

  260. of what's happening here.

  261. Chaos is going on

  262. and all of a sudden

  263. it's as if chaos

  264. is going on

  265. and it just stops

  266. and in the midst

  267. of the chaos

  268. it's as if

  269. John has this vision

  270. of,

  271. outside of time

  272. of a conversation

  273. going on

  274. between angels

  275. and to John

  276. to tell him something

  277. and what he says

  278. is

  279. in verse 3

  280. do not harm

  281. the earth

  282. or the sea

  283. or the trees

  284. until we have

  285. sealed the servants

  286. of our God

  287. on their foreheads.

  288. So,

  289. here's the thing,

  290. the first point

  291. if you could put it up.

  292. Even while the earth

  293. is in chaos

  294. God is sovereign

  295. and seals

  296. ordinary people

  297. for himself.

  298. Even while the earth

  299. is in chaos

  300. God is sovereign

  301. and seals

  302. ordinary people

  303. for himself.

  304. Sealing

  305. in this particular case

  306. in the ancient world

  307. that would be

  308. like

  309. you get something

  310. like wax

  311. doesn't have to just be wax

  312. but something

  313. which is melted

  314. and you put it

  315. on something

  316. and the king

  317. or the important person

  318. would have a ring

  319. or some other object

  320. that could be pushed

  321. into the wax

  322. or some other thing

  323. which is melted

  324. and it would leave

  325. an impression

  326. in that

  327. and that's sealing

  328. something.

  329. And so in the ancient world

  330. there's three

  331. connections

  332. to being sealed.

  333. To seal something

  334. means to authenticate it

  335. or it means

  336. to signify possession

  337. or it means

  338. to signify protection.

  339. So what's

  340. so the three things

  341. that sealing means

  342. is that it either means

  343. that it's authenticating

  344. something

  345. it's signifying

  346. possession

  347. of something

  348. or it's signifying

  349. protection of something.

  350. So here

  351. the image is

  352. that

  353. the lamb

  354. who is the redeemer

  355. is in control

  356. of the future

  357. as part of the future

  358. is there's these things

  359. that are going on

  360. in the planet

  361. the things that are

  362. going on in the planet

  363. the question within

  364. all of the things

  365. in the question

  366. of the planet

  367. is will suffering

  368. incline my heart

  369. towards God

  370. or away from Him?

  371. Will suffering

  372. incline my heart

  373. towards God

  374. or away from Him?

  375. And in the midst

  376. of all of this

  377. chaos

  378. which is going on

  379. and all this stress

  380. which is going on

  381. that in the midst

  382. of all of this

  383. we have this image

  384. that in the midst

  385. of it

  386. that God

  387. is sealing

  388. ordinary people

  389. for Himself

  390. It means that when I put my faith and trust in Jesus, when an ordinary person like you puts your faith and trust in Jesus and what he's done for us on the cross,

  391. that God, as one of the things that he does to us as a response to us putting our faith and trust in the salvation which is offered to us through Jesus

  392. and what he wins for us on the cross, is that God seals me.

  393. He seals you.

  394. It's as if he puts a tattoo on your forehead.

  395. Not a scary tattoo.

  396. But a good one.

  397. And he does that to signify that you're authentically his.

  398. That you are authentic.

  399. That you really are his.

  400. That you really belong to him.

  401. And that he really will, in an ultimate sense, from the point of view of all eternity, that you will now be under his complete and full protection.

  402. And that is given to the ordinary person who puts their faith and trust in Jesus.

  403. Even while the earth is in chaos, God is sovereign and seeks ordinary people for himself.

  404. Seven years ago or so, while I was still part of the Anglican Church of Canada, I went to a synod.

  405. Maybe it was the second to last synod that I ever attended.

  406. And there was a guest speaker.

  407. And the guest speaker was the Archbishop of the Sudan, the head of the Anglican Church in Sudan.

  408. And as some of you know, it's been very, very hard.

  409. It was very, very hard for Christians in Sudan for a long time.

  410. Many of them were captured.

  411. They'd be sold into slavery.

  412. They would be killed.

  413. Terrible, terrible things.

  414. And he came and spoke to our diocesan synod.

  415. And everybody was asking him all these questions about slavery and the poverty and et cetera, et cetera.

  416. And so I got up and I went to the mic.

  417. And I said to him, Bishop, does evangelism still happen in Sudan, even though all these terrible things are happening?

  418. Or has it stopped you from doing evangelism?

  419. And it was so wonderful.

  420. I wish it was filmed.

  421. And he burst into a huge smile.

  422. And he said, oh, God has been very good to us in the midst of all these trials.

  423. He said, our church has been growing.

  424. He said, I go into a village.

  425. And one of the things I will do is I will visit some of the individual Christians.

  426. And then I go into the center of the square in the village.

  427. And I open my Bible.

  428. And in a loud voice, I tell people about Jesus and what he's done for us on the cross.

  429. See, here's the thing.

  430. For a lot of us in the West, we wait until we have our own resources before we think that life can go on.

  431. So for churches, we think if the economic indicators aren't going the right way for us,

  432. if the culture isn't drawing people to us but pushing people away from us,

  433. if the demographics are against us, if the building ownership is against us,

  434. and it's as if we constantly are waiting for the culture to turn, the economics to turn,

  435. the possession issues to turn, and we keep waiting,

  436. even though we don't have to deal with even remotely the type of chaos that they do,

  437. let's say, in Sudan,

  438. we keep waiting for external things to be ready and set so that we can begin.

  439. And this text is saying that what this archbishop in the Sudan,

  440. he understood Revelation 7.

  441. I mean, our prayer should be that we could be like the church in the Sudan.

  442. Hopefully God grant us not to suffer that type of persecution and poverty and oppression.

  443. Father, may you spare us from that,

  444. and may you have mercy upon our brothers and sisters in Sudan

  445. and other places in the world that have to live under that.

  446. But even in the midst of chaos, with earth and chaos,

  447. God, the sovereign God, is still sealing people, ordinary people for himself.

  448. And the question for churches and the question for Christians

  449. isn't when will the culture allow us to do things again,

  450. or when will our owning of buildings allow us to do things again,

  451. or when will whatever allow us to do things again.

  452. It's to say, Father, what divine assignments do you have for me?

  453. What divine assignments do you have for my church?

  454. Father, deliver me from thinking that everything depends upon my resources

  455. or the external things being completely and utterly correct

  456. before I can pray or act or seek to obey you and bring you glory.

  457. Deliver me from thinking that I...

  458. Deliver us from thinking it's all about our resources

  459. and all about external things.

  460. And help us to hear the voice of God

  461. and seek to be obedient in telling people about Jesus and ministry.

  462. That even in the midst of chaos, God is sealing people for himself.

  463. Now, sometimes Christians fight amongst themselves about things.

  464. We're all sort of familiar about...

  465. Maybe we're most familiar about the way that Christians maybe fight about

  466. whether you could speak in tongues or not.

  467. I didn't have a fight this past week,

  468. but I had sort of a sincere conversation a little bit

  469. with my trainer of the book of Revelation.

  470. The fact the person who really knew the book of Revelation very, very well,

  471. and he knew that I'd just done chapter 6.

  472. He knew I was going to do chapter 7.

  473. And so he asked me, he said,

  474. George, okay, you know, the things in chapter 7,

  475. like when are they happening?

  476. Like, are you like a preterist and think that it all happened like in the year 90?

  477. Do you think you're like an amillennialist

  478. and it's all sort of happening right now?

  479. Do you think it's like going to happen just before the Great Tribulation?

  480. Do you think it's going to happen in the middle of the Tribulation?

  481. Do you think it's going to happen after the Tribulation?

  482. George, what do you think?

  483. And I had a very simple answer for him.

  484. You can all write it down.

  485. Like, he asked me, which one of those things do you think it is?

  486. And I had a very simple answer.

  487. The answer is yes.

  488. Yes, all of those things.

  489. Like, all of the above.

  490. Like, why do you have to choose one in particular?

  491. But while we're sort of familiar with maybe Christian's fight,

  492. I mean, he was all ready for a fight with me

  493. about whether I was going to be a preterist, an amillennialist,

  494. a premillennial dispensationalist,

  495. historic premillennialist, pre-trib, mid-trib, post-trib.

  496. He was ready for a fight on this particular issue,

  497. and he didn't quite know what to say when I said yes to all of them.

  498. But a very, very more modern type of a disagreement amongst Christians

  499. is over politics.

  500. And so it, you know, churches,

  501. there's some churches that their great dream would be,

  502. maybe more emergent churches,

  503. or maybe more what we would call liberal churches,

  504. their great dream would be to have somebody from the Green Party,

  505. or the NDP attend their church or speak on a Sunday morning.

  506. And there's other churches,

  507. and their great dream would be to have some great general

  508. from the United States military come and speak,

  509. or some football, college football coach.

  510. And the sort of the left-wing type Christians

  511. look down their noses at right-wing type Christians

  512. and say, look, look at that.

  513. They've got all their identity and everything all confused.

  514. And the more right-wing Christians look down their noses

  515. at those left-wing Christians

  516. and say they've got their identity all confused.

  517. They're completely and utterly captivated by politics.

  518. And the left-wing Christians look at the right-wing Christians

  519. and say, you've got all, like, completely captivated by politics.

  520. And both of us can sort of look at each other about that

  521. and have problems with the other.

  522. But the text in Revelation says something very, very powerful about this.

  523. But let's continue reading.

  524. Revelation chapter 7, verse 4.

    Revelation 7:4

  525. So remember, verse 3 was about having the servants of God

  526. sealed on their foreheads.

  527. In verse 4, I heard the number of the sealed.

  528. I heard the number of the sealed.

  529. 144,000 sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel.

  530. And then it goes through 12,000 of Judah, Reuben, Gad, Asher,

  531. Naphtali, Manasseh, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun,

  532. Joseph, and Benjamin.

  533. Some of those words, I don't know if I pronounced them correctly,

  534. but I said them confidently,

  535. so now you all think that's the right way to pronounce them.

  536. But you go through this long list.

  537. And then verse 9,

  538. Now here's the very interesting thing about this text.

  539. There's lots of very interesting things about this text.

  540. And I didn't catch this when I was reading it the first time.

  541. I've read it many, many times.

  542. It was only when I had to study the text that I noticed it.

  543. Like, it begins in a very curious way in verse 4.

  544. I heard the number of the sealed.

  545. 144,000 is a symbolic number.

  546. It's a number of completion.

  547. 12 times 12 times 1,000.

  548. It's a number of completion.

  549. From every tribe of the sons of Israel.

  550. But for a devout Jew listening to it,

  551. there's something, a variety of things,

  552. which are really odd about this text.

  553. As the angel starts to speak out loud,

  554. it's all Israel,

  555. so John's going to expect something,

  556. but the list is an odd list.

  557. It's Israel, but not Israel.

  558. There's a tribe missing.

  559. Dan is missing.

  560. And there's something else odd about it.

  561. There's sort of two different primary ways

  562. in the Old Testament that the tribes are listed.

  563. And this does neither of them.

  564. And it does something contradictory.

  565. You see, there's also a half-tribe mentioned.

  566. Usually in the Old Testament,

  567. when they're listing tribes,

  568. they say either neither of the half-tribes

  569. or both of the half-tribes,

  570. because Joseph had two sons,

  571. Manasseh and Ephraim,

  572. and usually they mention just the two half-tribes,

  573. but it mentions Joseph,

  574. and one of his sons,

  575. but not the other's son,

  576. and Levi's included,

  577. and it's puzzling.

  578. And ten and a half of these tribes

  579. in the 8th century B.C.

  580. were taken away to Assyria and disappeared.

  581. Nobody knows whatever happened to them.

  582. In fact,

  583. Mormons believe that North American aboriginals

  584. are the lost tribes of Israel,

  585. which is why Jesus,

  586. after he rose from the dead in Jerusalem,

  587. had to come here and preach to them.

  588. There was a movement in the 19th century in England

  589. called British Israelism,

  590. believing that the English people

  591. were the lost tribe of Israel,

  592. and therefore all of the promises to Israel

  593. in the Bible were applied to them.

  594. But the tribe,

  595. ten and a half of the tribes disappeared.

  596. They got lost from history,

  597. and yet they're mentioned,

  598. and a half-tribe's missing,

  599. and Dan's missing.

  600. And then,

  601. it's a little bit like,

  602. those of you might remember,

  603. in Revelation chapter 5,

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  604. there was a similar type of funny thing.

  605. John hears

  606. that this mighty act

  607. is going to be done

  608. by the lion of the tribe of Judah,

  609. and then after he hears this,

  610. he gets an opportunity to see,

  611. and he's expecting to see a lion,

  612. and what he sees is a little tiny lamb.

  613. Bah!

  614. Bah!

  615. Bah!

  616. He hears lion,

  617. sees bah!

  618. Bah!

  619. And here,

  620. he hears Israel,

  621. but then as he's hearing Israel,

  622. he's getting puzzled,

  623. and then what does he see?

  624. He sees

  625. what's in verse,

  626. my page is flipped,

  627. he sees what's in verse 9,

  628. a great multitude

  629. that no one could number

  630. from every nation,

  631. from all tribes,

  632. and all peoples,

  633. and all languages

  634. standing before the throne.

  635. he's surprised.

  636. It helps to show

  637. that the number is symbolic,

  638. and that somehow or another

  639. that God is making this new thing,

  640. this new Israel,

  641. that those who are healed

  642. aren't just,

  643. here's how I put it,

  644. and please take it

  645. with a grain of grace.

  646. Put it up on the screen, please.

  647. God does not want

  648. more Canadians

  649. or Africans,

  650. gays or straights,

  651. men or women.

  652. He seeks

  653. more

  654. douloses.

  655. I don't know how to spell it.

  656. It's D-O-U-L-O-S

  657. with an apostrophe at the end.

  658. God does not want

  659. more Canadians or Africans,

  660. gays or straights,

  661. men or women.

  662. He seeks

  663. more

  664. doulos.

  665. If you go back up

  666. to verse 3,

  667. it says,

  668. do not harm the earth

  669. or the sea

  670. or the trees

  671. until we have sealed the,

  672. then the word there

  673. translated as servant,

  674. some of your Bibles

  675. might say slaves,

  676. is the word doulos.

  677. And

  678. some of you have heard me

  679. say this before,

  680. the problem with the word

  681. doulos in modern English

  682. is that neither servant

  683. or slave

  684. is a very,

  685. very good word.

  686. Many of us,

  687. when we hear the word servant,

  688. we think of

  689. TV series like

  690. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

  691. Come on, we do.

  692. And, you know,

  693. often in American films,

  694. the servant

  695. is the smart,

  696. confident one

  697. in the family, right?

  698. The whole family

  699. is dysfunctional

  700. except the servant.

  701. Well, that's not

  702. what this text means,

  703. okay?

  704. And the other thing,

  705. we hear the word slave,

  706. we think of things

  707. like 12 years a slave.

  708. We think of the

  709. terrible, terrible,

  710. terrible things

  711. that happened

  712. on the slave plantations

  713. in the Caribbean

  714. and the United States.

  715. And that's not what,

  716. that's not really

  717. what's meant either.

  718. That's why often

  719. I use the word doulos

  720. because it,

  721. it, it,

  722. I mean,

  723. it means both servant

  724. and slave,

  725. but it's something different

  726. in the ancient world.

  727. But the primary idea

  728. behind it does,

  729. just like with sealing,

  730. has the idea

  731. of possession

  732. and under authority.

  733. Like, in some ways,

  734. the image of private

  735. would be better,

  736. but in terms of

  737. if you're in the army.

  738. You know,

  739. if you just get,

  740. you get,

  741. I've never been

  742. in the military,

  743. but if you come in

  744. as a lowly private,

  745. the distance

  746. to general

  747. is really high.

  748. That's really high.

  749. You don't,

  750. you don't get any,

  751. you don't,

  752. you don't get

  753. bossed anybody around

  754. if you're just

  755. a brand new private.

  756. You're,

  757. you're under authority.

  758. And,

  759. and that's in a sense

  760. what's just being

  761. communicated here.

  762. And,

  763. and you see,

  764. what's being communicated

  765. here is that

  766. God doesn't want

  767. Canadian Christians,

  768. African Christians,

  769. gay Christians,

  770. straight Christians,

  771. male Christians,

  772. female Christians.

  773. He's looking for doulos.

  774. His doulos.

  775. His doulos.

  776. You see,

  777. what happens

  778. when we respond

  779. to Jesus

  780. and put our faith

  781. and trust in him

  782. that amongst other things

  783. is not only are we sealed,

  784. but we're also given

  785. a new identity

  786. and a new destiny.

  787. We're given a new identity

  788. and a new destiny.

  789. And our primary identity now

  790. is that I am the doulos

  791. of the living God.

  792. I am the doulos

  793. of the lamb

  794. who was slain

  795. to redeem

  796. gays and straight

  797. Africans

  798. and Canadians

  799. and Asians

  800. and men

  801. and women

  802. for God.

  803. And so,

  804. what that means

  805. is that,

  806. you know,

  807. part of what it means

  808. to grow as a Christian

  809. is the question

  810. before us is

  811. do I grow

  812. into my new identity

  813. or do I grow away

  814. from my new identity?

  815. God wants me

  816. to grow into

  817. my identity

  818. that I understand

  819. that even though

  820. I am a Canadian

  821. and I live in Canada

  822. and all of that,

  823. that my primary identity

  824. is his doulos,

  825. that the dream

  826. of my heart

  827. should be

  828. to be his doulos,

  829. that even though

  830. I'm in Canada

  831. and I should be

  832. praying for the blessing

  833. of Canada

  834. and I should seek

  835. the good of Canada

  836. and there's nothing wrong

  837. with serving

  838. in the armed forces

  839. or serving on

  840. Parliament Hill

  841. or serving in

  842. industry

  843. or serving anything

  844. that,

  845. but that my primary

  846. identity

  847. that when it is

  848. for me to grow in

  849. to understand

  850. first and foremost

  851. where my citizenship

  852. and my identity

  853. comes from

  854. and it comes from

  855. being his doulos

  856. first and foremost

  857. and it not only

  858. gives me a new identity

  859. it gives me

  860. a new destiny

  861. and the question

  862. before me

  863. in growing as a Christian

  864. is will I grow

  865. into my destiny

  866. or away from my destiny?

  867. You know,

  868. growing away

  869. from my identity

  870. is to think

  871. that being a Canadian

  872. or being right wing

  873. or being

  874. whatever it is

  875. is more important

  876. than my identity

  877. as a Christian

  878. that that's the

  879. fundamental thing

  880. that determines

  881. my walk with Jesus

  882. and in terms

  883. of my destiny

  884. it's that we become

  885. insular

  886. that we lose

  887. this sense

  888. that every doulos

  889. of Jesus

  890. is called

  891. to be a world

  892. Christian

  893. that we have

  894. an obligation

  895. in our community

  896. to the arts community

  897. in the gay community

  898. in the entrepreneurial

  899. community

  900. in the bureaucrat

  901. community

  902. and the university

  903. community

  904. in the poverty

  905. community

  906. and the poverty

  907. workers community

  908. and that we have

  909. an obligation

  910. not just to the tribes

  911. and nations

  912. and languages

  913. in our city

  914. of those who speak

  915. Arabic

  916. and those who speak

  917. French

  918. and those who speak

  919. English

  920. but to the ends

  921. of the earth

  922. that we are to pray

  923. that as we grow

  924. in our walk

  925. with Jesus

  926. that we grow

  927. into an appreciation

  928. of our destiny

  929. to look

  930. not with fear

  931. and loathing

  932. from a right wing

  933. or a left wing

  934. view of the world

  935. but to see the world

  936. is ripe for harvest

  937. and that God

  938. has called us

  939. to tell tribes

  940. and nations

  941. and languages

  942. and people

  943. the good news

  944. that they can be

  945. sealed by the living God

  946. and can belong

  947. to him forever

  948. and can have

  949. the end

  950. of what they were

  951. made for

  952. which was to know

  953. and to be reconciled

  954. to the living God

  955. that that

  956. is possible

  957. for them

  958. now some of you

  959. might be troubled

  960. by some of what I said

  961. I've now had

  962. six kids

  963. graduate from university

  964. and of course

  965. sons-in-laws

  966. and daughters-in-law

  967. and all like that

  968. and I ask some of them

  969. some of them take courses

  970. in this area

  971. and if they talk

  972. about missionaries

  973. in University

  974. at University of Ottawa

  975. I mean we all know

  976. how they're going to talk

  977. about missionaries

  978. at University of Ottawa

  979. they don't say

  980. woohoo

  981. missionaries rock

  982. they don't say that

  983. they say missionaries

  984. are bad

  985. they're terrible

  986. that it's imperialism

  987. colonialism

  988. triumphalism

  989. it's pride

  990. it's coercion

  991. and that's the way

  992. and so

  993. for me to talk

  994. about this type

  995. of identity

  996. is actually

  997. sort of

  998. it really goes

  999. against the grain

  1000. of educated culture

  1001. and popular culture

  1002. in Canada

1003. and so some of us

  1004. if we're honest

  1005. are a little bit

  1006. troubled by it

  1007. but in fact

  1008. if you listen

  1009. to how it's described

  1010. here

  1011. it's the most

  1012. profoundly

  1013. unproud

  1014. untriumphalistic

  1015. uncoercive

  1016. thing imaginable

  1017. and it's profound

  1018. good news

  1019. listen to it again

  1020. verses 9 and 10

  1021. after this

  1022. I looked

  1023. and behold

  1024. a great multitude

  1025. that no one

  1026. could number

  1027. from every nation

  1028. from all tribes

  1029. and all peoples

  1030. and all languages

  1031. standing before the throne

  1032. and before the Lamb

  1033. clothed in white robes

  1034. with palm branches

  1035. in their hands

  1036. and crying out

  1037. with a loud voice

  1038. what do they cry?

  1039. this folks

  1040. is dynamite

  1041. against pride

  1042. this folks

  1043. is dynamite

  1044. against presumption

  1045. and arrogance

  1046. and colonialism

  1047. and triumphalism

  1048. what is the cry?

  1049. salvation belongs

  1050. to our God

1051. who sits on the throne

  1052. and to the Lamb

  1053. salvation belongs

  1054. to our God

1055. who sits on the throne

  1056. and to the Lamb

1057. and in the original language

  1058. it could be translated

  1059. it should be

  1060. it's more literally

  1061. salvation belongs

  1062. salvation is

  1063. of our God

  1064. and in Greek

  1065. the word

  1066. of our God

  1067. here

  1068. there's two different ways

  1069. it can be translated

  1070. into English

  1071. the same

  1072. one Greek word

  1073. means both

  1074. but we don't have

  1075. an English word

  1076. which is the same

  1077. and of

  1078. in this particular text

  1079. in the original text

  1080. can either mean

  1081. possession

  1082. or causality

  1083. and so it's either

  1084. saying

  1085. and so the ESV

  1086. some of your translations

  1087. will translate

  1088. a little bit different

  1089. because translators

1090. have to make a choice

  1091. so it's either saying

  1092. that salvation

  1093. belongs to God

  1094. or salvation

  1095. is caused

  1096. by God

  1097. and so our English

  1098. we have to choose

  1099. one or the other

1100. and translate it into English

  1101. but the original language

  1102. is saying both

  1103. it belongs to him

  1104. and it's caused

  1105. by him

  1106. here's the dynamite

  1107. if you could put

  1108. the next thing up

  1109. here's the dynamite

  1110. no person

  1111. no family

  1112. no philosophy

  1113. no spirituality

  1114. no institution

  1115. owns salvation

  1116. salvation

  1117. only belongs

  1118. to God

  1119. and to the Lamb

  1120. no race

  1121. no color

  1122. no educational attainment

  1123. no socioeconomic status

  1124. or wealth

  1125. or bank account

  1126. owns salvation

1127. I do not own salvation

  1128. this church

  1129. does not own salvation

  1130. the Anglican Network

  1131. in Canada

  1132. does not own salvation

  1133. the Roman Catholic Church

  1134. does not own salvation

  1135. Canada

  1136. the United States

  1137. the military industrial complex

  1138. the Green Movement

  1139. none of them

  1140. own salvation

  1141. only God

  1142. owns it

  1143. salvation

  1144. only belongs

  1145. to God

  1146. and to the Lamb

  1147. no person

  1148. no family

  1149. no philosophy

  1150. no spirituality

  1151. no institution

  1152. owns

  1153. salvation

  1154. it is of God

  1155. it belongs to Him

  1156. what does this mean?

  1157. there are many people

  1158. there are many

  1159. spiritualities

  1160. there are many

  1161. philosophies

  1162. there are many

  1163. ideologies

  1164. that teach in fact

  1165. that some of us

  1166. are doomed

  1167. and that we cannot

  1168. do anything about it

  1169. and this says

  1170. that is not true

  1171. that is not true

  1172. are you an untouchable

  1173. in India?

  1174. are you

  1175. a despised person

  1176. in China?

  1177. are you

  1178. are you mentally

  1179. handicapped?

  1180. are you

  1181. poor or broken

  1182. or alcoholic

  1183. or some type of

  1184. broken and despised

  1185. whatever it is

  1186. the way that the

  1187. left despise

  1188. or the right despise

  1189. because

  1190. salvation

  1191. is belonging

  1192. to God

  1193. and the God

  1194. that is revealed

  1195. here

  1196. is a God

  1197. that desires

  1198. people

  1199. from every nation

  1200. every people

  1201. every language

  1202. every state of life

  1203. to be with Him

  1204. in Heaven

  1205. it means that

  1206. there is no one

  1207. who is doomed

  1208. by external

  1209. or internal

  1210. forces

  1211. that what some

  1212. Muslims teach

  1213. that in the moment

  1214. of your conception

  1215. in the womb

  1216. that God

  1217. writes on you

  1218. whether or not

1219. you will go to Heaven

1220. or whether you will not

1221. that that is not true

  1222. that salvation

  1223. belongs to God

  1224. and that every person

  1225. can say

1226. I cannot trust in myself

  1227. I cannot achieve myself

  1228. God

  1229. salvation belongs to you

  1230. may you grant that

  1231. to me

  1232. may you bring that

  1233. to me

1234. may that come to me

1235. may I dwell in that

  1236. it belongs to you

  1237. and I desire

  1238. what only you have

1239. and what I can never have

  1240. by my own power

  1241. or my own accomplishments

1242. Father will you give me

  1243. Lamb of God

1244. who is slain for me

  1245. will you give me

  1246. what belongs to you

  1247. and God not weighing

  1248. our merits

  1249. but pardoning our offenses

  1250. will so give it

  1251. there is hope

  1252. for the despised

  1253. of the earth

  1254. there is

  1255. it undercuts

  1256. pride

  1257. and presumption

  1258. it means that

  1259. my grandchildren

  1260. can't say

  1261. I don't have to deal

  1262. with these matters

  1263. my papa's a pastor

  1264. my kids can't say

  1265. I don't have to deal

  1266. with these matters

  1267. my dad's a pastor

  1268. we can't say

  1269. I don't have to deal

  1270. with these things

  1271. I'm a Canadian

  1272. Canadians get what

  1273. they want

  1274. it deals with

  1275. all pride

  1276. it undercuts

  1277. all pride

  1278. all presumption

1279. yet at the same time

  1280. it gives us

  1281. a very very secure

  1282. thing

  1283. friends there are

  1284. times in our lives

  1285. if some of you

  1286. are young

  1287. maybe it hasn't

  1288. happened to you yet

  1289. but you live long

  1290. enough

  1291. you deal with

  1292. illness

  1293. you deal with

  1294. failure

  1295. you deal with

  1296. depression

  1297. you deal with

  1298. sadness

  1299. you deal with

  1300. things that just

  1301. don't work out

  1302. and if salvation

  1303. is something

  1304. that depends

  1305. upon you

  1306. you wonder

  1307. if there is

  1308. any hope

  1309. as you hear

  1310. the cry

  1311. of heaven

  1312. that salvation

  1313. belongs to

  1314. our God

  1315. then my hope

  1316. is secure

  1317. and it's not

  1318. pride

  1319. it's not

  1320. presumption

  1321. nothing in my

  1322. hands I bring

  1323. not weighing my

  1324. merits

  1325. not weighing my

  1326. accomplishments

  1327. not looking at

  1328. my race

  1329. not looking at

  1330. my sexuality

  1331. not looking at

  1332. any of these

  1333. things because

  1334. it belongs to

  1335. God and he

  1336. gives it to

  1337. those who

  1338. call out to

  1339. him with a

  1340. broken heart

  1341. to give me

  1342. what only you

  1343. have and what

  1344. only you can

  1345. cause

  1346. and that is the

  1347. message that we

  1348. can take to the

  1349. untouchables

  1350. to the despised

  1351. to the powerful

  1352. to the rich

  1353. to the educated

  1354. a few years

  1355. ago at our

  1356. evening service

  1357. I used to

  1358. have an evening

  1359. service and

  1360. when we had

  1361. interns at that

  1362. time there was

  1363. a brief period

  1364. where our

  1365. evening service

  1366. had all these

  1367. guys and gals

  1368. with PhDs

  1369. like if you

  1370. only had a

  1371. master's degree

  1372. you were like

  1373. uneducated in

  1374. the crowd and

  1375. I'd have these

  1376. interns and they

  1377. were terribly

  1378. intimidated

  1379. and I said to

  1380. one of them

  1381. listen I went

  1382. over what he'd

  1383. done as his

  1384. sermon I said

  1385. listen don't try

  1386. to impress

  1387. these PhDs

  1388. with educate

  1389. like listen

  1390. you try to

  1391. start talking

  1392. about when

  1393. things change

  1394. in western

  1395. civilization

  1396. they'll just

  1397. you know what

  1398. I said every

  1399. one of these

  1400. guys and gals

  1401. in that room

  1402. they all struggle

  1403. with pride

  1404. they all struggle

  1405. with envy

  1406. they all struggle

  1407. with sloth

  1408. and with lust

  1409. and with greed

  1410. and with gluttony

  1411. they all have

  1412. problems with

  1413. their kids

  1414. and their

  1415. wives

  1416. and their

  1417. boyfriends

  1418. or their

  1419. husbands

  1420. like give

  1421. them Jesus

  1422. don't try to

  1423. intellectually

  1424. impress them

  1425. tell them that

  1426. salvation belongs

  1427. to our God

  1428. and not to the

  1429. University of Ottawa

  1430. or Carleton

  1431. or Oxford

  1432. or Cambridge

  1433. but salvation

  1434. belongs to

  1435. our God

  1436. just sort of

  1437. in closing

  1438. I don't have

  1439. the time

  1440. to really

  1441. develop it

  1442. here's the

  1443. final thing

  1444. when I came

  1445. to this

  1446. church quite a

  1447. few years ago

  1448. and I was

  1449. trying to figure

  1450. out what I

  1451. should share

  1452. with them

  1453. with my vision

  1454. and all of

  1455. that type of

  1456. thing

  1457. and after a

  1458. couple of

  1459. years I came

  1460. across this

  1461. guy who asked

  1462. a very very

  1463. useful and

  1464. helpful question

  1465. and asking

  1466. this question

  1467. is a very

  1468. very helpful

  1469. question

  1470. I think it

  1471. was called

  1472. it was a

  1473. long article

  1474. called 10

  1475. questions for

  1476. the rest of

  1477. your life

  1478. and one of

  1479. the questions

  1480. was imagine

  1481. that you're

  1482. like 80

  1483. years old

  1484. 85 years

  1485. old

  1486. 90 years

  1487. old

  1488. and you're

  1489. looking back

  1490. on your

  1491. life

  1492. what is it

  1493. that you'll

  1494. wish you

  1495. hadn't achieved

  1496. or tried to

  1497. do

  1498. that's a

  1499. very very

  1500. very helpful

  1501. question

  1502. and in

  1503. fact I

  1504. found it

  1505. very very

  1506. challenging

  1507. and thought

  1508. provoking

  1509. and you

  1510. see that's

  1511. one of the

  1512. functions

  1513. of all of

  1514. these visions

  1515. of heaven

  1516. you know

  1517. palm branches

  1518. might not do

  1519. it for you

  1520. but look

  1521. again here

  1522. at verse

  1523. 9 and 10

  1524. and 11

  1525. and 12

  1526. after this I

  1527. looked and

  1528. behold a

  1529. great multitude

  1530. that no one

  1531. could number

  1532. from every

  1533. nation from

  1534. all tribes

  1535. and peoples

  1536. and languages

  1537. standing before

  1538. the throne

  1539. and before

  1540. the lamb

  1541. clothed in

  1542. white robes

  1543. with palm

  1544. branches in

  1545. their hands

  1546. and crying

  1547. out with a

  1548. loud voice

  1549. salvation

  1550. belongs to

  1551. our God

  1552. who sits

  1553. on the

  1554. throne

  1555. and to

  1556. the lamb

  1557. and all

  1558. the angels

  1559. were standing

  1560. around the

  1561. throne

  1562. and around

  1563. the elders

  1564. and the

  1565. four living

  1566. creatures

  1567. and they

  1568. fell on

  1569. their faces

  1570. before the

  1571. throne

  1572. and worship

  1573. God

  1574. saying

  1575. Amen

  1576. the blessing

  1577. and the

  1578. glory

  1579. and the

  1580. wisdom

  1581. and the

  1582. thanksgiving

  1583. and the

  1584. honor

  1585. and the

  1586. power

  1587. and the

  1588. might

  1589. be to

  1590. our God

  1591. forever

  1592. and ever

  1593. Amen

  1594. and the

  1595. question is

  1596. at the end

  1597. of your life

  1598. do you want

  1599. to be there

  1600. should that

  1601. or can

  1602. that

  1603. be your

  1604. supreme

  1605. ambition

  1606. put up the

  1607. next slide

  1608. growing a

  1609. biblical

  1610. longing for

  1611. heaven

  1612. will heal

  1613. order

  1614. and ground

  1615. my dreams

  1616. and yours

  1617. I write

  1618. my so that

  1619. you write it

  1620. down in your

  1621. notes

  1622. you're speaking

  1623. about yourself

  1624. growing a

  1625. biblical

  1626. longing for

  1627. heaven

  1628. will heal

  1629. order

  1630. and ground

  1631. your dreams

  1632. see the text

  1633. doesn't say

  1634. that we all

  1635. become monks

  1636. that we all

  1637. become nuns

  1638. it doesn't say

  1639. that we all

  1640. become pastors

  1641. of churches

  1642. it's all

  1643. nations

  1644. all peoples

  1645. all people

  1646. groups

  1647. but it

  1648. it sets

  1649. before us

  1650. this biblical

  1651. notion of

  1652. heaven

  1653. and it's

  1654. to clarify

  1655. within us

  1656. if my

  1657. should that

  1658. not be my

  1659. supreme

  1660. ambition

  1661. that I

  1662. not by

  1663. my own

  1664. merits

  1665. but by

  1666. the shed

  1667. blood of

  1668. Christ

  1669. and what

  1670. he has won

  1671. for me

  1672. on the

  1673. cross

  1674. that I

  1675. will one

  1676. day stand

  1677. with angels

  1678. and archangels

  1679. and the entire

  1680. created order

  1681. that I

  1682. will stand

  1683. before the

  1684. living God

  1685. unashamed

  1686. clothed with

  1687. a righteousness

  1688. and a favor

  1689. from God

  1690. that is not

  1691. my own

  1692. but is given

  1693. to me

  1694. freely and

  1695. utterly

  1696. by Jesus

  1697. and what he

  1698. does from

  1699. the cross

  1700. and should

  1701. that not

  1702. be my

  1703. supreme

  1704. ambition

  1705. that then

  1706. can put

  1707. into place

  1708. some of

  1709. my other

  1710. ambitions

  1711. let me just

  1712. tell you

  1713. very briefly

  1714. how it

  1715. worked in

  1716. my life

  1717. I know

  1718. I'm a

  1719. pastor

  1720. but here's

  1721. how it

  1722. worked in

  1723. my life

  1724. I realized

  1725. when I

  1726. asked this

  1727. question

  1728. that to

  1729. myself

  1730. and I

  1731. looked at

  1732. this text

  1733. that I

  1734. did not

  1735. care

  1736. at the

  1737. age of

  1738. 90

  1739. if God

  1740. lets me

  1741. live so

  1742. long

  1743. at the

  1744. age of

  1745. 90

  1746. I will

  1747. not

  1748. care

  1749. if I

  1750. have

  1751. ever

  1752. been

  1753. a

  1754. bishop

  1755. I

  1756. I

  1757. have

  1758. actually

  1759. become

  1760. a

  1761. canon

  1762. but I

  1763. said I

  1764. wouldn't

  1765. care if

  1766. I've

  1767. ever

  1768. become

  1769. a canon

  1770. or a

  1771. bishop

  1772. a dean

  1773. been in

  1774. a famous

  1775. church

  1776. had any

  1777. particular

  1778. honors

  1779. you know

  1780. there's

  1781. three types

  1782. of things

  1783. that at

  1784. the end

  1785. of the

  1786. day

  1787. that I

  1788. would

  1789. wish

  1790. that

  1791. at 90

  1792. I would

  1793. look back

  1794. and hope

  1795. that I

  1796. could do

  1797. and one

  1798. of them

  1799. is that

  1800. God

  1801. this is

  1802. something

  1803. private and

  1804. personal

  1805. but some

  1806. of you

  1807. have heard

  1808. it

  1809. that God

  1810. would use

  1811. me

  1812. and that

  1813. I would

  1814. be willing

  1815. to take

  1816. the risks

  1817. that in

  1818. a city

  1819. like

  1820. Ottawa

  1821. God

  1822. would

  1823. build

  1824. a church

  1825. like

  1826. All Souls

  1827. Langham

  1828. Place

  1829. or St.

  1830. Ebbs

  1831. or St.

  1832. Aldate

  1833. in Oxford

  1834. and some

  1835. of you

  1836. don't know

  1837. what those

  1838. churches

  1839. are

  1840. but that

  1841. if God

  1842. there was

  1843. no such

  1844. church

  1845. like that

  1846. in Ottawa

  1847. and if

  1848. God

  1849. would

  1850. use

  1851. me

  1852. if I

  1853. would

  1854. be

  1855. willing

  1856. to

  1857. take

  1858. such

  1859. risk

  1860. only

  1861. God

  1862. could

  1863. build

  1864. it

  1865. but

  1866. that

  1867. I

  1868. would

  1869. be

  1870. willing

  1871. to

  1872. take

  1873. such

  1874. risk

  1875. that

  1876. such

  1877. a

  1878. church

  1879. where

  1880. God's

  1881. word

  1882. is preached

  1883. where

  1884. missionaries

  1885. are sent

  1886. out

  1887. where

  1888. people

  1889. are

  1890. equipped

  1891. to

  1892. live

  1893. godly

  1894. lives

  1895. in

  1896. their

  1897. place

  1898. of

  1899. work

  1900. whether

  1901. it's

  1902. the

  1903. BBC

  1904. or

  1905. university

  1906. or

  1907. washing

  1908. dishes

  1909. that

  1910. God

  1911. would

  1912. use

  1913. me

  1914. in

  1915. such

  1916. a

  1917. way

  1918. and

  1919. I

  1920. realized

  1921. that

  1922. at

  1923. the

  1924. end

  1925. of

  1926. the

  1927. day

  1928. what

  1929. I

  1930. would

  1931. hope

  1932. at

  1933. 90

  1934. is

  1935. that

  1936. if

  1937. God

  1938. not

  1939. only

  1940. grants

  1941. me

  1942. such

  1943. strength

  1944. but

  1945. my

  1946. wife

  1947. that

  1948. I

  1949. am

  1950. still

  1951. married

  1952. to

  1953. Louise

  1954. and

  1955. that

  1956. we

  1957. love

  1958. each

  1959. other

  1960. and

  1961. that

  1962. if

  1963. God

  1964. grants

  1965. me

  1966. such

  1967. strength

  1968. at

  1969. 90

  1970. that

  1971. my

  1972. kids

  1973. when I

  1974. die

  1975. will

  1976. be

  1977. standing

  1978. with

  1979. me

  1980. there

  1981. in

  1982. heaven

  1983. and

  1984. my

  1985. grandkids

  1986. and

  1987. their

  1988. husbands

  1989. or

  1990. wives

  1991. and

  1992. that

  1993. forms

  1994. my

  1995. prayers

  1996. and

  1997. that's

  1998. for me

  1999. as a

  2000. pastor

  2001. for

  2002. some

  2003. of

  2004. you

  2005. you

  2006. have

  2007. this

  2008. dream

  2009. to

  2010. be

  2011. an

  2012. entrepreneur

  2013. or

  2014. to

  2015. be

  2016. a

  2017. great

  2018. teacher

  2019. or

  2020. to

  2021. write

  2022. sonnets

  2023. or

  2024. to

  2025. you

  2026. know

  2027. or

  2028. just

  2029. to

  2030. be

  2031. a

  2032. great

  2033. dad

  2034. or

  2035. great

  2036. mom

  2037. and

  2038. there

  2039. will

  2040. be

  2041. practical

  2042. things

  2043. in

  2044. terms

  2045. of

  2046. your

  2047. life

  2048. that

  2049. are

  2050. all

  2051. ordered

  2052. towards

  2053. this

  2054. supreme

  2055. ambition

  2056. but

  2057. as

  2058. the

  2059. gospel

  2060. grips

  2061. us

  2062. and

  2063. as

  2064. we

  2065. long

  2066. for

  2067. heaven

  2068. then

  2069. growing

  2070. a

  2071. biblical

  2072. longing

  2073. for

  2074. heaven

  2075. will

  2076. heal

  2077. order

  2078. and

  2079. ground

  2080. my

  2081. dreams

  2082. in

  2083. yours

  2084. but

  2085. stand

  2086. never

  2087. too

  2088. late

  2089. to

  2090. be

  2091. sealed

  2092. by

  2093. the

  2094. living

  2095. God

  2096. and

  2097. it's

  2098. never

  2099. too

  2100. late

  2101. to

  2102. have

  2103. a

  2104. biblical

  2105. longing

  2106. for

  2107. heaven

  2108. order

  2109. and

  2110. ground

  2111. your

  2112. dreams

  2113. you're

  2114. never

  2115. too

  2116. old

  2117. so

  2118. the

  2119. question

  2120. is

  2121. what

  2122. is

  2123. the

  2124. Holy

  2125. Spirit

  2126. convicting

  2127. you

  2128. of

  2129. this

  2130. morning

  2131. let's

  2132. bow

  2133. our

  2134. heads

  2135. in

  2136. prayer

  2137. father

  2138. some

  2139. of

  2140. us

  2141. are

  2142. afraid

  2143. of

  2144. the

  2145. Christian

  2146. faith

  2147. thinking

  2148. that

  2149. it

  2150. will

  2151. mean

  2152. that

  2153. we

  2154. will

  2155. no

  2156. longer

  2157. ever

  2158. have

  2159. any

  2160. dreams

  2161. that

  2162. as

  2163. we

  2164. get

  2165. closer

  2166. to

  2167. you

  2168. we

  2169. will

  2170. have

  2171. to

  2172. become

  2173. a

  2174. monk

  2175. or

  2176. a

  2177. nun

  2178. or

  2179. a

  2180. missionary

  2181. father

  2182. some

  2183. of

  2184. us

  2185. might

  2186. become

  2187. monks

  2188. or

  2189. nuns

  2190. or

  2191. missionaries

  2192. but

  2193. father

  2194. we

  2195. give

  2196. you

  2197. thanks

  2198. and

  2199. praise

  2200. that

  2201. just

  2202. as

  2203. salvation

  2204. is a

  2205. complete

  2206. and utter

  2207. gift

  2208. that

  2209. only

  2210. you

  2211. possess

  2212. that

  2213. you

  2214. will

  2215. give

  2216. to

  2217. us

  2218. that

  2219. you

  2220. have

  2221. not

  2222. made

  2223. us

  2224. all

  2225. to be

  2226. completely

  2227. and

  2228. utterly

  2229. alike

  2230. but

  2231. that

  2232. you

  2233. father

  2234. desire

  2235. to

  2236. as

  2237. you

  2238. save

  2239. us

  2240. to

  2241. heal

  2242. us

  2243. to

  2244. point

  2245. us

  2246. in

  2247. the

  2248. right

  2249. direction

  2250. to

  2251. help

  2252. us

  2253. to

  2254. grow

  2255. into

  2256. our

  2257. identity

  2258. to

  2259. grow

  2260. into

  2261. our

  2262. destiny

  2263. and

  2264. by

  2265. so

  2266. doing

  2267. to

  2268. become

  2269. free

  2270. we

  2271. ask

  2272. father

  2273. that

  2274. your

  2275. holy

  2276. spirit

  2277. would

  2278. move

  2279. mightily

  2280. in

  2281. our

  2282. lives

  2283. that

  2284. your

  2285. holy

  2286. spirit

  2287. would

  2288. instill

  2289. and

  2290. inflame

  2291. and

  2292. inspire

  2293. within

  2294. us

  2295. a

  2296. biblical

  2297. longing

  2298. for

  2299. heaven

  2300. an

  2301. appreciation

  2302. of what

  2303. your

  2304. son

  2305. did

  2306. for us

  2307. on

  2308. the

  2309. cross

  2310. and

  2311. how

  2312. when

  2313. we

  2314. put

  2315. our

  2316. faith

  2317. and

  2318. trust

  2319. in

  2320. him

  2321. you

  2322. take

  2323. ordinary

  2324. imperfect

  2325. people

  2326. like

  2327. ourselves

  2328. and you

  2329. seal

  2330. us

  2331. authenticate

  2332. us

  2333. as

  2334. yours

  2335. that

  2336. you

  2337. claim

  2338. us

  2339. as

  2340. your

  2341. own

  2342. possession

  2343. and

  2344. that

  2345. you

  2346. will

  2347. protect

  2348. us

  2349. father

  2350. help

  2351. us

  2352. to

  2353. go

  2354. into

  2355. our

  2356. identity

  2357. and

  2358. destiny

  2359. and

  2360. grant

  2361. us

  2362. such

  2363. a

  2364. longing

  2365. for

  2366. heaven

  2367. a

  2368. biblical

  2369. longing

  2370. for

  2371. heaven

  2372. that

  2373. our

  2374. dreams

  2375. will

  2376. be

  2377. will

  2378. be

  2379. ordered

  2380. and

  2381. our

  2382. dreams

  2383. will

  2384. be

  2385. clarified

  2386. and

  2387. purified

  2388. renewed

  2389. and

  2390. revived

  2391. and

  2392. all

  2393. of

  2394. this

  2395. we

  2396. ask

  2397. in

  2398. the

  2399. name

  2400. of

  2401. Jesus

  2402. your

  2403. son

  2404. and

  2405. our

  2406. savior

  2407. amen
