  1. I've been thinking about our fourth year.

  2. And so what I do about this, I wanted to start off with,

  3. if you know me, my family's from Montana.

  4. I was born in Texas.

  5. My dad is a sixth-generation German farmer,

  6. did not want to be on a ranch in Montana,

  7. so he joined the military.

  8. And so I was born in Texas.

  9. We traveled everywhere.

  10. And when you live on a military base,

  11. you hear of a lot of urban legends and stories

  12. are told amongst the military people.

  13. And I remember growing up and just hearing

  14. all these fancy, amazing stories

  15. about fighter pilots and jet pilots

  16. and all these other things that are going on.

  17. But one stuck into my head.

  18. It's the one that's kind of imprinted in my mind.

  19. And my dad told me this.

  20. I don't know if it's true,

  21. but I'm just going to go by it and say it's true.

  22. It might be an urban legend he can tell me later on.

  23. And the story goes like this.

  24. There was a corporal.

  25. So in the business world, corporal is,

  26. I don't know what you'd even call them.

  27. They're probably an intern at McQuarrie

  28. or someplace like that.

  29. So there, an intern comes in, a corporal,

  30. and he's in charge of the motor pool,

  31. which is where you have all the trucks

  32. and the Jeeps and the tanks on the military base.

  33. And so he's sitting at his desk.

  34. And then one day, the base commander calls up.

  35. The base commander would be like,

  36. you're head, head, head.

  37. So he's the top of your company.

  38. I don't know.

  39. He's beyond a managing director,

  40. whatever you want to.

  41. So he's probably a three-star general.

  42. And he's trying to figure out,

  43. he needs a car for the day.

  44. And so he calls up the motor pool.

  45. He doesn't announce who he is.

  46. He just says, hey, I'm calling to see

  47. what kind of cars we have in the motor pool.

  48. And the corporal, not knowing who's talking,

  49. said, well, you know, we have a couple Jeeps.

  50. We have a couple tanks that are being repaired.

  51. We have a couple big trucks.

  52. And we have this really nice limo

  53. for a big, fat general.

  54. And the general's listening on his phone, right?

  55. And he's like, son, do you know who this is?

  56. And he's like, no, no, no, no, sir.

  57. And he goes, this is General, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,

  58. that big, fat general.

  59. How dare you say something like that?

  60. And there's this quiet.

  61. And all of a sudden the private goes,

  62. sir, do you know who this is?

  63. And the general goes, no.

  64. Goodbye, fatty.

  65. I tell that story because I love it.

  66. And I remembered it since I've been like 10 years old.

  67. But I think it's a story that speaks to us today.

  68. The story, I think, is, it talks about,

  69. you know, sometimes we just forget who we talk to.

  70. Sometimes we forget who we're talking to.

  71. Sometimes we forget who we are.

  72. Sometimes we forget our position and our job

  73. and what we're supposed to do.

  74. Sometimes we forget who we report to.

  75. And the story I just told shares a great example of that,

  76. and I hope it's true.

  77. But the scripture talks about it over and over again.

  78. In the passage that we talked about about four weeks ago,

  79. we put it in the bulletin again today.

  80. And it's because I think it talks to us

  81. as a church at four years old.

  82. And this is going to be a very interesting sermon time.

  83. So what we're going to do is,

  84. I hate meetings.

  85. I hate AGMs.

  86. I just, I'm always,

  87. because it's just always these situations

  88. where you're calling people up,

  89. come here to this meeting,

  90. and we need a quorum,

  91. and we need all these things.

  92. And it just never works out in churches

  93. and businesses and everywhere.

  94. And so what we decided to do,

  95. and this is, I think, is our third one,

  96. our second one,

  97. we decided not to have AGM,

  98. but we started to have a service.

  99. And so what we're going to do is,

  100. we're going to share.

  101. So you're in our AGM right now,

  102. but hopefully it'll be funner than a board meeting.

  103. And we're going to share about

  104. what God's been doing in the church's life.

  105. We're going to share where we've been,

  106. where we are now,

  107. and where we're hoping to go.

  108. And so this is basically Watermark's AGM.

  109. So you got that.

  110. Then afterwards, we're going to take a picture,

  111. and there's food for people.

  112. And if you haven't ordered your ticket yet,

  113. we have some extra tickets.

  114. Come see Christina and I.

  115. We're going to have this great celebration.

  116. But right now, we're looking at,

  117. you got it.

  118. Where are we going,

  119. and what we're doing.

  120. And the passage says this.

  121. As Peter is talking to the church,

  122. he reminds them of who they are.

  123. He reminds them of who they're working with.

  124. And the thing that always sticks out to me

  125. in verse nine is he reminds them

  126. that they are a priest.

  127. He reminds them that everybody in the church

  128. is a priest.

  129. Now in the Jewish culture,

  130. there were only a couple of priests,

  131. and those priest jobs were really important.

  132. But in the church,

  133. what Peter is reminding us

  134. is that everybody in the church is a priest.

  135. The priest job was to bring broken people to God.

  136. The priest job was to be this element of reconciliation.

  137. The priest made the temple happen.

  138. Anything that happened in the temple,

  139. it was because the priest were serving,

  140. they were doing, they were bringing.

  141. And the priest job was to bring the broken people,

  142. to bring the people who needed God

  143. into the temple

  144. and to help this reconciliation take place.

  145. And when Peter's writing in 1 Peter 2,

  146. what you realize is that the people forgot.

  147. The people forgot.

  148. And the Bible's full of this.

  149. The Bible talks a lot about

  150. sometimes we forget when it's prosperous

  151. and things are great

  152. and it can't even be better.

  153. And then sometimes we,

  154. as God's people, priests,

  155. we forget when it's difficult

  156. and when it's really hard.

  157. But what he says here

  158. is that the people forgot.

  159. And as I look back on these four years

  160. and if I think about the next 20 years,

  161. and this is going to be short, guys,

  162. but I think about the next 20 years,

  163. there's some things that keep sticking into my mind

  164. is that what I hope this church will look like.

  165. And there's some things in my mind

  166. that's sticking with what I hope this church

  167. won't look like.

  168. And I wonder, and my prayer is,

  169. and I hope that we don't become like the priest

  170. that Peter's writing to in 1 Peter.

  171. I hope that 30 years from now

  172. when people come into Watermark

  173. that we're not a group of passive people.

  174. I mean, sometimes we can become passive, right?

  175. And that's why Peter's writing this message to him.

  176. Sometimes we can come into the temple

  177. and we can expect to have our needs met

  178. instead of meeting other people's needs.

  179. Sometimes we can come into the temple

  180. and we can not want to be equipped.

  181. We cannot want to be served.

  182. We can just want to veg and sit down

  183. because our life is so hard and so crazy

  184. and we can come in and we can forget

  185. that God has called us all to be priests.

  186. I mean, he has called us all to help broken people

  187. and to be a part of healing broken city, Hong Kong.

  188. I wonder, and I hope,

  189. that we don't become like the people in 1 Peter

  190. because Peter wrote this story to this church

  191. that's 30 years old.

  192. And I hope in 25 years,

  193. we're not struggling with the same things

  194. that they were struggling with.

  195. I hope that we're not so busy

  196. that we become separated from where we live.

  197. In Peter's day, the people were so busy

  198. with their schedules and their life

  199. and everything they were doing.

  200. They were just so busy

  201. that they didn't think about their neighbors

  202. or the people around them.

  203. And they stopped reaching out to new people.

  204. They stopped reaching out to new people

  205. because they were so busy.

  206. It's amazing to me, sometimes in a church,

  207. we can travel 20 minutes or 30 minutes

  208. to get to a church or a watermark,

  209. but we can't walk 10 feet out of our door

  210. to talk to our neighbors.

  211. And I hope that we're not like that.

  212. I pray that we don't become like the people

  213. in Peter's day.

  214. I hope that we don't stop changing lives

  215. and communities and relationships.

  216. I hope that we keep reaching out and loving people.

  217. I hope that we stay focused on the one teacher, Jesus,

  218. and not whoever's teaching up here 20 years from now.

  219. We don't want to become a mega church

  220. that's focused on one personality,

  221. but we want to become a church

  222. that continually focuses on Christ and what he's done.

  223. You know, when we first started praying about this church,

  224. we wrote out some things.

  225. We said we want to be a church

  226. that knows what it was like before we became Christians.

  227. We want to be a church that never forgets

  228. what it was like when we walked in darkness,

  229. when we were alone, when we felt guilt,

  230. when we felt shame,

  231. when we felt terrible,

  232. and no one would ever talk to us.

  233. We wanted to remember what that was like.

  234. We wanted to be a church

  235. that was for the unchurched people.

  236. We wanted to be a church

  237. that was for de-churched people,

  238. people who gave up on church.

  239. We wanted to be a church

  240. that was also for church people,

  241. but the focus was always never

  242. to bring people from other churches.

  243. The focus was always to reach people

  244. who weren't in church on Sunday

  245. and to love them and bring them to the gospel.

  246. When we started praying about this,

  247. after six months,

  248. one of our members came up and he said,

  249. you know, this church, it's,

  250. I said, what?

  251. He goes, well, this is how I would define it.

  252. I would say Watermark is the home of sinners

  253. in the gospel.

  254. Watermark is the home of sinners in the gospel

  255. and I pray that 25 years from now,

  256. we would continually be that group of people

  257. who were changed by God's word.

  258. We prayed that we would be a church community

  259. where everybody knew your name

  260. and everybody knew your story

  261. or parts of your story.

  262. That people could pray for you

  263. and they could be a part of you.

  264. How are we doing?

  265. Are we doing good with that?

  266. Because that's what we prayed for.

  267. We prayed that we would be this church family

  268. where, and this is amazing to me

  269. because it's something I've been praying for forever,

  270. we wanted to be a church

  271. where even if friends knew

  272. that somebody else was thinking

  273. about spiritual things

  274. and even if they weren't spiritual,

  275. they would say, hey, go check out Watermark

  276. because they're an interesting church.

  277. I've heard good things about them.

  278. And it's amazing to me

  279. how many people are in church today

  280. because somebody brought them

  281. and the people who brought them

  282. weren't churchgoers

  283. or they weren't in the family of God

  284. and some of them aren't even in here today

  285. and that's the type of church

  286. we want to be about.

  287. We want to be a church

  288. that integrates all the generations together, right?

  289. We've talked about that

  290. and sometimes that gets messy.

  291. I mean, sometimes it gets messy

  292. when you have kids around

  293. and they're screaming and crazy.

  294. I actually love it.

  295. I mean, I think it's just what

  296. the family of God's supposed to be like.

  297. The family of God's supposed to be messy

  298. and people are messy.

  299. But that's the type of church we wanted to be

  300. and what we realized is

  301. if your kids,

  302. listen to me really carefully,

  303. even if you don't have kids,

  304. you are raising the kids in this church.

  305. If the kids never see you worship,

  306. if they never see you sing,

  307. if they never see you tithe,

  308. if they never see you come to God's word,

  309. they never see you open it,

  310. if they just come and they get separated

  311. and they go off to other places,

  312. if they never are integrated

  313. into the church family,

  314. their faith will never become their own.

  315. I mean, statistically,

  316. the numbers are out of control.

  317. And so we think that sometimes

  318. the best thing to do

  319. is get this great youth program

  320. and that might help bring some people

  321. into a church,

  322. but that's not going to help them

  323. walk a lifetime with the Lord.

  324. What's going to help them

  325. walk a lifetime with the Lord

  326. is for us doing it together.

  327. And so they see older people

  328. and brothers and sisters

  329. and I'm so thankful

  330. for the singles in this group

  331. because my kids are ministered

  332. so much by you guys and ladies

  333. because you love them,

  334. you encourage them,

  335. and you show them what it means

  336. to be a Christian

  337. even as you're older.

  338. We want it to be a church

  339. that was theologically sound.

  340. We want it to always talk

  341. about the gospel.

  342. We want it to be a place

  343. where you could ask questions.

  344. We want it a place

  345. where even if you didn't agree

  346. with what was said,

  347. you could feel free

  348. to ask the question

  349. and you could feel heard

  350. and then you could walk away

  351. going,

  352. wow, that's an interesting church

  353. because even though

  354. I agreed very differently,

  355. they love me,

  356. they care for me,

  357. they still pursue me

  358. in their community groups

  359. and I want to bring my friends there.

  360. We want this vision

  361. to drive everything that we do.

  362. We want to be a church

  363. that understands

  364. that we're not in Hong Kong

  365. to use Hong Kong.

  366. We're not in Hong Kong

  367. for the short period of time

  368. just to use it

  369. and then get our money

  370. or our position

  371. and then go back

  372. to our hometown

  373. but we believe

  374. that God has placed you here

  375. because he wants you

  376. to serve the city.

  377. He wants you to change the city.

  378. He wants you to impact the city.

  379. He wants you to use your gifts

  380. and your talents

  381. and your time

  382. and we want to be a church

  383. that does that

  384. and thinks about that.

  385. How are we doing?

  386. My prayer,

  387. I think that we're doing pretty good

  388. but we could do better

  389. in some areas

  390. and so what we're going to do

  391. is we're going to share

  392. some of these things

  393. of what God has been

  394. allowing us to do

  395. but again,

  396. it's not the staff doing it,

  397. it's you doing it

  398. and if you don't engage,

  399. if you don't pray,

  400. if you don't do all these things,

  401. then Watermark won't exist.

  402. We want to be a church community

  403. where everyone serves

  404. and use their gifts and talents

  405. and the focus point

  406. is changing lives

  407. and so I've asked Danielle

  408. to come up.

  409. Danielle, where are you?

  410. Okay.

  411. And as I think about

  412. what God has called us to do,

  413. it's my privilege

  414. as a pastor

  415. just to see God

  416. changing people's lives

  417. and so Danielle

  418. has agreed to come up here

  419. and she's going to share

  420. a little of her story.

  421. I promise not to be

  422. as hard on her

  423. as I am with my wife

  424. sometimes up here

  425. by asking funny questions

  426. or things like that.

  427. So Danielle,

  428. as I think of

  429. God changing people's lives,

  430. I know that there's

  431. many stories out here

  432. but I really want people

  433. just to kind of hear

  434. a part of your story

  435. so maybe just share

  436. who you are

  437. and how you,

  438. just share who you are.

  439. Hi everyone.

  440. My name is Danielle

  441. and I'm currently working

  442. for Watermark Church

  443. as a graphic designer

  444. and my husband

  445. is a non-believer

  446. which is why

  447. he's not here today

  448. but he supports

  449. my choice of faith

  450. because he has witnessed

  451. the change in me

  452. over the last two years

  453. after I've become baptized

  454. and my seven-year-old daughter,

  455. she comes to church

  456. with me every Sunday

  457. so she's on this journey

  458. together with me

  459. and I got baptized

  460. two years ago

  461. just outside.

  462. In our great kiddie pool

  463. that we have out there.

  464. Yes,

  465. and then I have

  466. started coming ever since.

  467. Okay,

  468. well can you tell

  469. a little bit about

  470. your story

  471. about how the Lord

  472. has been moving

  473. in your life

  474. and in your marriage

  475. and just the things

  476. that you've been learning,

  477. I mean as comfortable

  478. as you feel

  479. during this time.

  480. Yeah,

  481. a couple of years ago

  482. I was going through

  483. a phase whereby

  484. nothing seems to matter

  485. or mean to me,

  486. like nothing seems

  487. to mean anything to me

  488. and I was feeling

  489. empty and lonely

  490. no matter what,

  491. even though I have

  492. all the things

  493. that I need

  494. and I was depressed

  495. so,

  496. and because of that

  497. I started picking

  498. on my marriage,

  499. my life,

  500. and my partner.

  501. I resented many things

  502. that I have been through

  503. in Hong Kong

  504. and I really,

  505. really blamed him

  506. for everything

  507. and we separated

  508. for a while

  509. and I started coming

  510. to Watermark Church.

  511. So what God

  512. has taught me

  513. was,

  514. he actually showed me

  515. a miracle,

  516. a miracle for me

  517. because during that time

  518. I was so 100% sure

  519. that I'm not going

  520. to give my marriage

  521. a second chance

  522. but he changed my heart

  523. and he healed my heart

  524. and I started to learn

  525. how to love my husband again

  526. and we got back together

  527. and we are now having

  528. a really healthy marriage.

  529. You have a very

  530. interesting story

  531. of,

  532. can you just share

  533. maybe how you came

  534. to be about

  535. at Watermark

  536. and what the church

  537. has been doing

  538. in your life

  539. since that happened?

  540. So I was going

  541. through a phase

  542. like where I was

  543. so upset

  544. and I was talking

  545. to a friend

  546. when I went back

  547. to Singapore.

  548. I'm from Singapore

  549. and she's from here

  550. and she asked me

  551. if I'm doing alright

  552. and I usually

  553. would tell people

  554. say I'm fine

  555. but on that evening

  556. I was with Scarlett

  557. I was feeling really down.

  558. I told her

  559. no I'm not fine at all.

  560. Something is really

  561. wrong in me

  562. and I don't know

  563. how to fix it

  564. and I think she said

  565. you should go to

  566. this church with me

  567. and check it out

  568. and I said okay

  569. and we did

  570. so it was

  571. Watermark Church

  572. and I came

  573. without any expectations

  574. and without

  575. like thinking

  576. whether it's really

  577. the solution

  578. to my problems

  579. and yeah

  580. so she kind of

  581. indirectly

  582. helped

  583. sort out

  584. my messy life

  585. I'm grateful for that

  586. and of course

  587. I know it's

  588. through God

  589. that you know

  590. he brought her

  591. to my life

  592. on that night

  593. and asked me

  594. to come here.

  595. and you told me

  596. that she's not

  597. a church goer

  598. and she no longer

  599. goes to church

  600. here right

  601. so my question is

  602. why did you keep coming?

  603. I don't make fun

  604. of Singaporeans

  605. so you're okay

  606. with that

  607. because there's

  608. too many rules there.

  609. That was a good one

  610. I didn't prepare

  611. for that.

  612. Okay

  613. why do I keep coming?

  614. Why do you keep coming?

  615. Because

  616. yeah

  617. Okay

  618. firstly

  619. I've been to churches

  620. in Singapore

  621. but they are like

  622. maybe not the ones

  623. that I really feel

  624. comfortable with

  625. so that puts me off

  626. and then when I was here

  627. and I was down

  628. and I came here

  629. I don't feel intimidated

  630. I like the music

  631. and I like the atmosphere

  632. and I like your sermons

  633. yeah

  634. You don't have to say that

  635. because you work for me

  636. No

  637. yeah

  638. so that's why

  639. and also

  640. after I started joining

  641. a community group

  642. I have a sense

  643. of belonging

  644. and I just realized

  645. that I can't stop

  646. coming anymore

  647. yeah

  648. What would you tell

  649. somebody who

  650. was experiencing

  651. the same things

  652. that you were experiencing

  653. in that sense?

  654. Well

  655. this I have to read

  656. from the script

  657. for those of you

  658. or even a friend

  659. or a family member

  660. you see that

  661. if they are experiencing

  662. something similar to me

  663. I just want to say

  664. as cliche as it sounds

  665. we are not alone

  666. and that God

  667. is always

  668. around

  669. as forms of church

  670. as forms of

  671. a church mate

  672. a neighbor

  673. or even a friend

  674. who is sitting right beside you

  675. who brought you here

  676. like

  677. I think

  678. God wants us

  679. to be here

  680. and there's a room

  681. you just don't know

  682. or maybe you know

  683. and you don't know

  684. where to start

  685. so

  686. coming here

  687. I think

  688. is a good place

  689. to start

  690. Can I pray for you?

  691. Yeah

  692. And then we'll let

  693. the next guys come up

  694. Father we thank you

  695. for my sister

  696. and I pray for her family

  697. and pray for her husband

  698. who is still on this journey

  699. thank you that he

  700. is happy to have

  701. Danielle and his daughter

  702. come to church

  703. and the community

  704. and stay in it

  705. and I pray for

  706. just his eyes

  707. that you would open

  708. his eyes

  709. to your son Christ

  710. pray that you

  711. just encourage her

  712. and just thank you

  713. for how you

  714. you've healed her marriage

  715. in many many ways

  716. but we know

  717. that the journey

  718. isn't completed

  719. and so we pray

  720. that you would continue

  721. to go before her

  722. and give her wisdom

  723. give her peace

  724. and to encourage her

  725. and just give her

  726. the words

  727. that would point

  728. those around her

  729. to your son

  730. so Father

  731. we just thank you

  732. and we love you

  733. and we pray these things

  734. in your son Jesus name

  735. Amen

  736. Thanks

  737. Good morning

  738. Are we on?

  739. Following on

  740. from what Tobin

  741. has been saying

  742. I'm going to talk

  743. a little bit about

  744. community groups

  745. but connected

  746. to what Tobin

  747. was saying

  748. in 1887

  749. a guy called

  750. Ansel Bourne

  751. who is the guy

  752. that Jason Bourne

  753. from the Bourne

  754. was named after

  755. he was a Christian

  756. preacher

  757. who one day

  758. set off to visit

  759. his sister

  760. he was in Rhode Island

  761. it was only a couple

  762. of miles away

  763. but then mysteriously

  764. he ended up

  765. withdrawing all

  766. of his savings

  767. moving to Pennsylvania

  768. and opened up

  769. a store

  770. under the name

  771. of Alfred J. Brown

  772. for two months

  773. he was there

  774. when after two months

  775. he suddenly

  776. woke up one morning

  777. thinking

  778. where on earth

  779. am I?

  780. when the people

  781. around him

  782. told him

  783. oh we think

  784. you are called

  785. Albert J. Brown

  786. he was totally

  787. confused

  788. because

  789. Mr. Bourne

  790. had had a case

  791. of amnesia

  792. for two months

  793. he'd forgotten

  794. who he was

  795. and what he was

  796. meant to be doing

  797. and he ended up

  798. living a completely

  799. different life

  800. from what he was

  801. meant to be doing

  802. he went back

  803. after two months

  804. and lived completely

  805. normally

  806. as Ansel Bourne

  807. for the rest

  808. of his life

  809. now

  810. why do I tell

  811. that story

  812. you may be wondering

  813. basically

  814. as Christians

  815. we often have

  816. an amnesia problem

  817. at Watermark

  818. we know

  819. that actually

  820. we often forget

  821. who we are

  822. and what we're here for

  823. why actually

  824. God has brought us

  825. into Hong Kong

  826. and at Watermark

  827. we have community groups

  828. which is one of the places

  829. where

  830. we are to remind

  831. each other

  832. of who we are

  833. and what we're here for

  834. we are to remind

  835. each other

  836. that as Christians

  837. we're to be

  838. God's word junkies

  839. we're to have

  840. the gospel

  841. shaping every part

  842. of our life

  843. increasingly

  844. day by day

  845. we're to be people

  846. who are

  847. who don't forget

  848. that actually

  849. we are family members

  850. we're here to love

  851. and serve

  852. and care for each other

  853. and encourage each other

  854. not just attend

  855. Sunday meetings

  856. we're also

  857. to remember

  858. that we

  859. are God's ambassadors

  860. called to share

  861. the gospel

  862. to people

  863. who don't know it

  864. to the world around

  865. who needs to hear

  866. the amazing good news

  867. that is why

  868. we started

  869. community groups

  870. at Watermark

  871. to have people around us

  872. who can help us

  873. to remember

  874. who we are

  875. so we don't

  876. fall into

  877. the same case

  878. as Ansel Bourne

  879. now I have

  880. I have a couple of

  881. wonderful people

  882. with me

  883. Colin and Kristen

  884. who are part of

  885. one of the 14

  886. community groups

  887. that we have

  888. across Hong Kong Island

  889. and Kowloon

  890. and in Lantau Island

  891. and I've just

  892. invited them

  893. to share a little bit

  894. about what

  895. community group

  896. has been like

  897. for them

  898. over this last year

  899. so maybe

  900. if you'd just like

  901. to introduce yourself

  902. first

  903. and then

  904. that wasn't

  905. in the question

  906. I'm just throwing

  907. them off with her

  908. so I'm Kristen

  909. my husband Colin

  910. we've been in

  911. Hong Kong

  912. for five years

  913. Colin is from

  914. Hong Kong originally

  915. but I'm not

  916. and we've been in

  917. Watermark for about

  918. three years

  919. great

  920. thank you

  921. so could you tell me

  922. what community group

  923. are you part of

  924. we are the

  925. Bel Air group

  926. okay

  927. and tell me

  928. what is it like

  929. being part of the

  930. Bel Air community group

  931. our group is very new

  932. we just started this year

  933. in February

  934. and we meet every other

  935. Saturday

  936. and our group

  937. is mainly composed

  938. of families

  939. and couples

  940. and there's very good

  941. bonding around the adults

  942. as well as the children

  943. and during our discussion

  944. time

  945. the kids

  946. the older one

  947. will take care of

  948. the younger one

  949. in a separate area

  950. which is very important

  951. for us

  952. because it takes away

  953. the chaos

  954. from our discussion

  955. and our group

  956. people are very open

  957. in sharing what God

  958. is doing in their lives

  959. which is really great

  960. great

  961. and so how have you

  962. seen God working

  963. and growing

  964. both your community group

  965. and even in your own lives

  966. this past year

  967. I think just to give

  968. a bit of background

  969. of where we were at

  970. spiritually

  971. so I was from Hong Kong

  972. but then we met in London

  973. we were in London

  974. for quite a long time

  975. so

  976. and we moved back

  977. only five years ago

  978. and the first two years

  979. was really tough

  980. because we found

  981. in London

  982. there's a much better

  983. work-life balance

  984. and work is really

  985. demanding

  986. and it's really stressful

  987. for me

  988. and it's affecting my health

  989. and also our marriage

  990. and then we found

  991. Watermark

  992. and we joined Tobin's group

  993. which was great

  994. to be like

  995. spoon-fed for a year

  996. just go there

  997. enjoy the friendship

  998. and

  999. and being

  1000. taken care of

  1001. yeah

  1002. that was

  1003. that was

  1004. really

  1005. we're thankful

  1006. for that kind of

  1007. recovery

  1008. and refreshment time

  1009. until

  1010. until one day

  1011. this particular

  1012. church member

  1013. church staff

  1014. Chris Thornton

  1015. strongly encouraged us

  1016. to let's

  1017. start a group

1018. together with two other couples

  1019. Simon Sherman

  1020. Dwight and Margo

  1021. gentle encouragement

  1022. gently

  1023. and

  1024. and consistently

  1025. at different occasion

  1026. over a period

  1027. of three months

  1028. and

  1029. yes

  1030. with a gender behind

  1031. let's come out

  1032. for lunch

  1033. yeah

  1034. yeah

  1035. and

  1036. so I would say

  1037. God

  1038. help us to grow

  1039. through

  1040. co-leading a group

  1041. because when we are

  1042. CG members

  1043. I think

  1044. like what Tobin said

  1045. we were really

  1046. the passive participant

  1047. we go there

  1048. enjoy the friendship

  1049. enjoy the food

  1050. you know

  1051. learn about God's word

  1052. share it

  1053. and

  1054. bye bye

  1055. and then

1056. wait for the next one

  1057. and

  1058. and when

  1059. when we co-leading

  1060. a CG

  1061. I think God

  1062. gradually

  1063. changed our minds

  1064. to become more

  1065. proactive

  1066. and also

  1067. become more

  1068. kingdom focused

  1069. when we pray

  1070. for our members

  1071. when we pray

  1072. for the visitors

  1073. when we

  1074. start to concern

  1075. more about

  1076. what's going on

  1077. in the church

  1078. yeah

  1079. so we actually

  1080. read the bulletins

  1081. more now

  1082. yeah

  1083. sorry

  1084. I think

  1085. I need to look

  1086. yes

  1087. and also

  1088. we

  1089. we start

  1090. stepping a bit more

  1091. you can see

  1092. I'm not doing that

  1093. very well

  1094. we're trying to step

  1095. outside our comfort zone

  1096. to meet newcomers

1097. and try to make them

  1098. feel welcome

  1099. but

  1100. naturally

  1101. I'm the more

  1102. introvert kind

  1103. in our relationship

  1104. and I am

  1105. naturally not

  1106. a very friendly person

  1107. but

  1108. Chris is great

  1109. Chris is not

  1110. Chris is complete

  1111. opposite

  1112. he's friendly

  1113. and really welcoming

  1114. people

  1115. and outspoken

  1116. yeah

  1117. that's great

  1118. and

  1119. yeah

  1120. and

  1121. right

  1122. so

  1123. and also

  1124. when we

  1125. started the group

1126. we were a bit worried

  1127. and

  1128. very concerned

  1129. initially

  1130. whether

  1131. are we ready

  1132. to start a group

  1133. and

  1134. we're planning

  1135. to have babies

  1136. can we really commit

1137. how long can we commit

  1138. and

  1139. whether people will come

  1140. if they come

  1141. are they nice people

1142. are they easy to get along

1143. so a lot of these kind of worries

  1144. and really self-centered question

  1145. and

1146. but I think God just

  1147. provided everything

  1148. he provided people

  1149. provided

  1150. really good bonding

  1151. among the groups

  1152. regardless of our

  1153. background

  1154. our personality

  1155. and beliefs

  1156. that we

  1157. we all come together

  1158. quite well

  1159. and

  1160. and

  1161. so

1162. I think what we learn from

  1163. is that

  1164. it's not

  1165. what we do

  1166. or

  1167. our ability

  1168. that makes the group

  1169. to grow

  1170. but it's really

  1171. God's causes

  1172. the group

  1173. to grow

  1174. especially when we

  1175. see God's work

  1176. in our lives

  1177. where we come together

  1178. pray together

  1179. we find that

  1180. our

  1181. our faith

  1182. individually

  1183. and as a group

  1184. become stronger

1185. as we really can see

1186. God works in our lives

  1187. through our

  1188. ups and downs

  1189. of our members

  1190. that's great

  1191. thank you

  1192. and Kristen

  1193. why do you

  1194. why do you think

  1195. being part of a

  1196. community group

  1197. has been important

  1198. for your

  1199. spiritual journey

  1200. if there's someone

  1201. out here as well

  1202. who maybe

  1203. was wondering

  1204. about being part

  1205. of a community group

  1206. what would you say

  1207. so I think

  1208. if we are not

  1209. part of a CG

  1210. then

  1211. we probably

  1212. wouldn't be

  1213. meeting people

  1214. meeting other

  1215. believers

  1216. on a regular

  1217. basis

  1218. with the

  1219. intentional purpose

  1220. of

  1221. sharing our lives

  1222. praying together

  1223. and studying

  1224. the word

  1225. and I think

  1226. if we don't

  1227. do that

  1228. it's very easy

  1229. for us

  1230. to just

  1231. get comfortable

  1232. in our own ways

  1233. which is really

  1234. the worldly ways

  1235. and we will have

  1236. no accountability

  1237. to other

  1238. believers

  1239. but because

  1240. we are part

  1241. of a CG

  1242. we are regularly

  1243. reminded about

  1244. how the others

  1245. are living their lives

  1246. and so we are

  1247. regularly challenged

  1248. and encouraged

  1249. by that

  1250. so I think

  1251. that helps us

  1252. to walk

  1253. we've got

  1254. more closely

  1255. and then

  1256. secondly

  1257. when we study

  1258. the sermon series

  1259. you know

  1260. when we discuss it

  1261. and when we think

  1262. through the message

  1263. together

  1264. it really helps

  1265. to make the message

  1266. stick longer

  1267. and hopefully

  1268. that translates

  1269. to our daily life

  1270. and the third thing

  1271. is I think

  1272. the prayer support

  1273. provided by the CG

  1274. is really important

  1275. for example

  1276. in the early

  1277. part of our pregnancy

  1278. before we found

  1279. out it's viable

  1280. I think

  1281. I could have

  1282. easily fallen

  1283. I mean

  1284. get overwhelmed

  1285. by worries

  1286. because I'm

  1287. naturally a worrier

  1288. but thanks

  1289. to all the prayers

  1290. from our CG

  1291. and also many friends

  1292. in this church

  1293. we managed

  1294. to stay quite calm

  1295. which was a surprise

  1296. so up until

  1297. you know

  1298. week nine

  1299. which is considered

  1300. quite late

  1301. to hear the heartbeat

  1302. so when we found

  1303. out it was viable

  1304. everyone who had

  1305. been praying

  1306. is super encouraged

  1307. not just us

  1308. so it's just

  1309. a great thing

  1310. to be praying

  1311. for something together

  1312. and I think

  1313. in the recent months

  1314. our CG

  1315. has been quite amazed

  1316. by how quickly

  1317. God answered

  1318. some of our prayers

  1319. and when that happened

  1320. everyone is encouraged

  1321. not just the prayer

  1322. requester

  1323. but even in cases

  1324. where God

  1325. hasn't answered

  1326. or God

  1327. answered

  1328. in a different way

  1329. I think that

  1330. God's peace

  1331. and encouragement

  1332. will still hold

  1333. the prayer

  1334. requester together

  1335. that's great

  1336. thank you

  1337. thank you

  1338. so

  1339. our aim

  1340. for this

  1341. for this coming year

  1342. is that

  1343. we've already heard

1344. that we want to be

  1345. a church

  1346. which has

  1347. church planting

  1348. in our DNA

  1349. and multiplying

  1350. community groups

  1351. is like church planting

  1352. in miniature

1353. and so we want to be able

  1354. to multiply

  1355. community groups

  1356. across Hong Kong Island

  1357. and in Kowloon

1358. we would love to start groups

  1359. in Park Island

  1360. this year

  1361. we'd love to start a group

  1362. down in

  1363. Aplei Chow

  1364. Aberdeen

  1365. Wong Chuk Hang

  1366. direction

  1367. we'd love to start a group

  1368. another group

  1369. in Kowloon side

  1370. and also

  1371. we're hoping

  1372. for those who

  1373. English is maybe not

  1374. the language

  1375. they're most comfortable in

1376. we want to be starting

  1377. and we're planning

  1378. to start a group

  1379. for Mandarin speakers

1380. to be able to study

  1381. God's word

  1382. which David

  1383. later you'll see

  1384. will be

  1385. helping to head up

  1386. and also

  1387. a Cantonese

  1388. speaking group

  1389. as well

  1390. so these are some

  1391. of the things

1392. we really want to pray for

  1393. if you are not

  1394. in a community group

1395. come and see me afterwards

1396. if you live in any

  1397. of the areas

  1398. I've just mentioned

  1399. or are interested

1400. come and see me afterwards

  1401. because God actually

  1402. wants to do amazing

  1403. things this year

  1404. like he's been doing

1405. in Colin and Kristen's life

1406. so let me just pray

  1407. for them

  1408. and then

  1409. I'm going to transition

  1410. on for Alfie

  1411. to talk about

  1412. the university

  1413. ministry

  1414. let me just pray

  1415. Father thank you

  1416. so much

1417. for what you've been doing

1418. in Colin and Kristen's life

  1419. in that community group

1420. and I know in so many

  1421. other community groups

  1422. across Watermark

  1423. Lord thank you

1424. that you are a living God

  1425. who wants to change

  1426. our lives

1427. he wants to help us

  1428. to remember

  1429. who we are

1430. and who we are called

1431. to be in this city

  1432. Lord please help us

  1433. as a church

1434. to be that kind of people

  1435. who are everything

1436. that you've called us to be

  1437. in your name

  1438. Amen

  1439. over to Alfie

  1440. good morning

  1441. ah here we go

  1442. alright good morning

  1443. my name is Alfie

  1444. and I help direct

  1445. the university ministries

  1446. here at Watermark

  1447. and it's been quite

  1448. an exciting time

  1449. it's been a lot of transition

1450. over the past 18 months

1451. in fact 18 months ago

  1452. I did not know

  1453. any of these people

  1454. that I brought up

  1455. and it's really exciting

1456. that we're able to come

1457. and hear from each of them

1458. a bit about what God

  1459. has been doing

  1460. in their lives

1461. and in the university ministry

1462. these 18 months of transition

  1463. have been very stressful

  1464. for me

  1465. I don't like change

  1466. I want everything

1467. to stay exactly the same

1468. and go according to plan

  1469. but you know

  1470. as people have come

  1471. and people have gone

1472. God has been so faithful

1473. to bring different people along

  1474. you know

  1475. he's brought me

  1476. and he's brought Henrika

  1477. to come and join

  1478. the ministry team

  1479. and David

1480. who we'll hear from later

1481. but he's also brought up

  1482. this amazing team

  1483. of student leaders

1484. there are about a dozen

  1485. different students

  1486. who together

  1487. are you know

  1488. reaching out

  1489. and loving the campus

1490. in just an amazing way

  1491. it's you know

1492. come talk to me later

  1493. I'll tell you

  1494. it's mind boggling

  1495. just how God brought

1496. each one of these people

1497. in their journey of faith

  1498. and you know

  1499. to a position

  1500. where they're leading

  1501. and you know

  1502. help doing little

  1503. small groups

  1504. on the campus

  1505. one of these students

  1506. is Irima

  1507. who is really

  1508. one of my favorite

1509. no you're all my favorites

1510. but her journey of faith

  1511. consistently like

  1512. you know

  1513. daily monthly

  1514. you know

  1515. as I hear about

1516. what God has been doing

  1517. in her life

  1518. and her family

  1519. is super encouraging

  1520. for myself

  1521. and so I've asked

1522. to share a little bit

  1523. about how ICF

  1524. the International Christian Fellowship

  1525. at HKU

  1526. how the university ministry

  1527. and how Watermark

  1528. as a church

  1529. has been encouraging her

  1530. and her journey

  1531. hello

  1532. I'm Edie

  1533. so I think

  1534. ICF

  1535. it's really important

1536. for each one of us

1537. and why I say that

  1538. it's simply because

  1539. in HKU

  1540. where you find

  1541. a lot of students

  1542. really like to boast

  1543. and pretend

  1544. and it's hard

  1545. to find a community

  1546. where you can

  1547. really share

  1548. your struggles

  1549. and really share

  1550. like really be humble

  1551. and really have

  1552. a serving heart

  1553. and I think

  1554. ICF actually

  1555. really encourage

1556. every single one of us

  1557. to really be vulnerable

  1558. and really share

  1559. our struggles

  1560. in the community

  1561. and ask for prayers

  1562. and fellowships

  1563. and apart from

  1564. ICF

  1565. actually

  1566. I think ICF

  1567. it's a really

  1568. prayer center community

  1569. and actually

  1570. when we go there

  1571. every time

1572. we'll pray for each other

  1573. and not only

  1574. on the Wednesday meeting

  1575. apart from Wednesday

  1576. we actually

  1577. pray for each other

  1578. throughout the week

  1579. and keep each other

  1580. accountable

  1581. and that's really

  1582. encouraging for me

  1583. because

  1584. for a student

  1585. I feel like

  1586. I'm not working

  1587. like walking

  1588. on this journey

  1589. on my own

  1590. but really

  1591. I have a huge

  1592. community

  1593. supporting me

  1594. and really inspiring

  1595. me each time

  1596. and I think

  1597. apart from this

  1598. what ICF

  1599. ICF actually

  1600. encouraged me

  1601. to live out

  1602. gospel center life

  1603. why I say that

  1604. it's because

  1605. every time

1606. when we go to ICF

  1607. we're actually

  1608. challenged

  1609. by Alfie or Henrica

  1610. to really

  1611. start our mission

  1612. in the campus

  1613. and that mission

  1614. is not to get

  1615. straight A's

  1616. or to get

  1617. really good grades

  1618. but rather

  1619. it's to really

  1620. seeking all the souls

  1621. and really spread

  1622. gospel to the

  1623. students around me

  1624. and that actually

  1625. inspired me

  1626. to love

  1627. and care

  1628. about the people

  1629. around me

  1630. and actually

  1631. I think that

  1632. helped me

  1633. to really

  1634. get to know

  1635. more about

  1636. God's word

  1637. and actually

  1638. inspired me

  1639. to really

  1640. reflect on

  1641. all those words

  1642. and apart

  1643. from ICF

  1644. I think

  1645. Watermark

  1646. encouraged me

  1647. a lot as well

  1648. and the reason

  1649. why I say

  1650. that it's

  1651. I really appreciate

  1652. Watermark's

  1653. sermon

  1654. which are really

  1655. I think

  1656. it's really

  1657. honest

  1658. and really

  1659. open

  1660. to talk

  1661. about

  1662. all those

  1663. topics

  1664. which are

  1665. really hard

  1666. it can be

  1667. telling us

  1668. we are sinful

  1669. and we are

  1670. but it can

  1671. keep reminding us

  1672. that we are

  1673. worthy

  1674. and God

  1675. loves us

  1676. so much

  1677. as well

  1678. and that's

  1679. just really

  1680. inspiring

  1681. and really

  1682. touched my

  1683. heart each

  1684. time

  1685. and actually

  1686. encouraged me

  1687. to know more

  1688. about God's

  1689. word as well

  1690. that's how I feel

  1691. yeah

  1692. thanks Edie

  1693. one of the things

  1694. that Edie

  1695. and a dozen

  1696. other students

  1697. are doing

  1698. is leading

  1699. small groups

  1700. so you know

  1701. each week

  1702. they're getting

  1703. together

  1704. in classrooms

  1705. in dorms

  1706. in the libraries

  1707. to look at the

  1708. Bible

  1709. and see God's

  1710. word

  1711. but you know

  1712. we have this

  1713. huge struggle

  1714. and you know

  1715. especially like

  1716. in my heart

  1717. because I really

  1718. want the students

  1719. to be on the

  1720. campus

  1721. and you know

  1722. reaching and

  1723. loving those people

  1724. but I also want

1725. them to be a part

  1726. of the church

  1727. I think sometimes

  1728. we do one extreme

  1729. or the other

  1730. so either they're

  1731. on the campus

  1732. and we don't see

  1733. them at church

  1734. or they're all

  1735. at church

  1736. and they're never

  1737. reaching out to

  1738. the campus

  1739. and this is where

1740. I would like you guys

  1741. everyone here

  1742. as a family

  1743. of Watermark

  1744. to come in

  1745. and help us

  1746. help us

  1747. love these students

  1748. come and take them

  1749. out for lunch

  1750. love them

  1751. we have a volunteer

  1752. who bought tickets

  1753. for all the students

  1754. to join our

  1755. anniversary lunch

  1756. for free

  1757. so if you're a student

  1758. free lunch

  1759. but you know

  1760. we want them

  1761. to also come

  1762. and get to know

  1763. you

  1764. get to know

  1765. what God is doing

  1766. in your life

  1767. that you know

  1768. there is life

  1769. after you graduate

  1770. and that Jesus

  1771. is still there

  1772. and he's still

  1773. working and doing

  1774. that

  1775. we also want them

  1776. to be involved

  1777. in the church

  1778. we want them

  1779. to be serving

  1780. and so you know

  1781. if you're in a ministry

  1782. if you're doing stuff

  1783. with the kids

  1784. or the youth

  1785. and you see somebody

  1786. who's young

  1787. and wearing funny clothes

1788. ask them to you know

  1789. come and you know

  1790. come and join us

  1791. come serve with us

  1792. because as much

  1793. as you guys

  1794. are students

1795. and are on the campus

  1796. you're also a part

  1797. of this church family

1798. and we love to see us

  1799. try and figure out

  1800. where that balance is

  1801. between being missionaries

  1802. on campus

  1803. and being you know

  1804. members of this church

  1805. one of the things

1806. that God has been doing

  1807. has been bringing in

  1808. lots of different people

1809. to allow us to reach

  1810. more people

  1811. on the campus

  1812. there are about

  1813. a million and a half

  1814. HKU students

  1815. who are from

  1816. mainland China

  1817. maybe it's about 2000

  1818. but David is

  1819. God has brought

  1820. David along

  1821. who has just graduated

  1822. from seminary in Boston

  1823. who's from mainland China

1824. and he's going to share

  1825. a little bit about

  1826. what he's been doing

  1827. on HKU

  1828. with mainland

  1829. with Mandarin speaking students

  1830. so for people

1831. who never met me before

  1832. and who is under

  1833. five years old

  1834. maybe you know

  1835. I am Amanda's husband

  1836. she volunteer

  1837. in the case ministry

  1838. sometimes

1839. so you may know her

  1840. and I was born

  1841. in up north

  1842. very close to Russia

  1843. and you can see

  1844. maybe some polar bears

  1845. there

  1846. that's my neighbors

  1847. yeah

  1848. Hey Longjiang province

  1849. it's very cold place

  1850. and

  1851. we have

  1852. minus

  1853. 0.3

  1854. year old

  1855. kid

  1856. on her way

  1857. here

  1858. and

  1859. even though

  1860. young as

  1861. she is

  1862. kicked me

  1863. kicked me

  1864. many times

  1865. and

  1866. I will see

  1867. what

  1868. it will be like

  1869. when she's out

  1870. and

  1871. right now

  1872. we

  1873. have

  1874. he just

  1875. said

  1876. that we have

  1877. 2,000

  1878. university students

  1879. from

  1880. mainland China

  1881. and

  1882. in the Bible

  1883. we are always

  1884. reminded

  1885. love your neighbor

  1886. and

  1887. I'll be just

  1888. reminded me

  1889. you know

  1890. do you know

  1891. how many neighbors

  1892. you have

  1893. 2,000

  1894. 2,000

  1895. people

  1896. who are

  1897. from mainland China

  1898. they never heard

  1899. of the gospel

  1900. they never met

  1901. Jesus

  1902. and

  1903. how do

  1904. you love

  1905. your neighbor

  1906. the best way

  1907. to love them

  1908. is to tell them

  1909. Jesus

  1910. and share the gospel

  1911. with them

  1912. that's why

  1913. we

  1914. at Watermark

  1915. we started

  1916. the mental ministry

  1917. and to share

  1918. the gospel

  1919. the word

  1920. we started

  1921. from the beginning

  1922. Genesis

  1923. we are reading

  1924. chapter 1 and 2

  1925. every Thursday afternoon

  1926. and Thursday evening

  1927. at the

  1928. community center

1929. you know where it is

  1930. high street

  1931. for six

1932. and if you have time

  1933. and you know

  1934. anyone

  1935. who is interested

  1936. please come

  1937. and join us

  1938. and

  1939. we also

  1940. cooperate

  1941. with many other

  1942. groups

  1943. on campus

  1944. and

  1945. some other fellowship

  1946. and some people

  1947. so we can

  1948. reach out to

  1949. undergrad

  1950. and

  1951. graduate

  1952. and post grad

  1953. and many different

  1954. people

  1955. and the two weeks

  1956. I was in another

  1957. fellowship

  1958. and they just

  1959. reminded me

  1960. to say

  1961. you know

  1962. how many

  1963. neighbors do you have

  1964. I said

  1965. how many

  1966. and they said

  1967. we have

  1968. one million

  1969. Mandarin speakers

  1970. in Hong Kong

  1971. so one million

  1972. that's a large

  1973. amount of people

  1974. and they are

  1975. our neighbors

  1976. in many

  1977. 2,000 years

  1978. our Lord Jesus

  1979. challenged

  1980. this lawyer

  1981. this lawyer

  1982. came to Jesus

  1983. and Jesus

  1984. said

  1985. you

  1986. should love your Lord

  1987. and love your neighbor

1988. and who is my neighbor

  1989. one million people

  1990. and I know

  1991. many people

  1992. of you

  1993. maybe want to start

  1994. Mandarin speaking CG

  1995. so

1996. you know where I am

  1997. and talk to me

  1998. thank you

  1999. thanks David

  2000. we don't know

  2001. what this university ministry

2002. is going to look like

  2003. in another 18 months

  2004. mostly students

  2005. will have graduated

2006. maybe they'll have left Hong Kong

  2007. there'll be a whole bunch

  2008. of new students

  2009. there'll be a new set

  2010. of student leaders

2011. and I'm reminded every day

  2012. that all the things

  2013. that we're doing

  2014. whether it's

  2015. you know

  2016. with small groups

  2017. on campus

  2018. whether it's reaching out

  2019. to mainland

  2020. mainland Chinese speakers

  2021. you know

  2022. these things only happen

  2023. when God is working

2024. and when we're asking him

  2025. and we're praying

  2026. to him

  2027. and praying

  2028. for this university

  2029. so we really want

2030. you guys as a church

  2031. to join us

  2032. in praying

  2033. for these students

  2034. to pray for them

2035. and pray that they would

  2036. come to know Jesus

  2037. pray

  2038. love these students

  2039. and take them out

  2040. for lunch

  2041. challenge these students

2042. to take the next step

  2043. on their spiritual journey

2044. over this next couple of weeks

  2045. we're going to be

  2046. starting a journey

  2047. towards talking a bit

  2048. about justice

2049. and as a university ministry

2050. we're still trying to figure out

  2051. what that looks like

  2052. but within Watermark

  2053. Jeremy heads up

  2054. our missional justice department

2055. and he's going to come up

  2056. and

  2057. department?

  2058. I don't know

2059. he's going to come up

2060. and talk a little bit about that

  2061. all right

  2062. thank you so much

  2063. missional justice

2064. it sounds kind of cool

2065. it wasn't just two words

2066. that I decided to throw together

  2067. that sounds cool

2068. because it actually reminds me

2069. and it should remind us

  2070. like what exactly is

  2071. is justice

  2072. justice

  2073. so when I'm thinking

2074. about us serving the poor

  2075. and when I'm thinking

  2076. about us

  2077. when we're thinking about

2078. you know reaching the people

2079. who are like at the lowest

  2080. of the low

  2081. at the lowest rungs

  2082. of the social ladders

  2083. it's not just a matter

  2084. of charity

  2085. or you know

  2086. doing something nice

  2087. it's actually an issue

  2088. of justice

  2089. it's actually something

  2090. God looks at

  2091. and says

  2092. hey this is unjust

  2093. and I as a just God

  2094. believe that something

2095. actually needs to be done

  2096. so it's not

2097. it's so much more serious

  2098. and weighty

  2099. than that

  2100. and why missional

  2101. because

  2102. I think I constantly

  2103. need a reminder

2104. I think we all do

  2105. as a church

  2106. when we go out

  2107. and serve

  2108. and do

  2109. you know

  2110. good deeds

  2111. it's not really just

  2112. to hopefully make

  2113. society more just

2114. which is where the term

  2115. social justice

  2116. comes from

  2117. but it's

  2118. it's actually something

  2119. more than that

  2120. everything we do

  2121. is intimately connected

  2122. to a God

  2123. who is missional

  2124. who came

  2125. first came down

  2126. through Jesus Christ

  2127. to actually reach us

  2128. and everything we do

  2129. is part of

  2130. of advancing his kingdom

2131. a part of his mission

  2132. that's so clearly written

  2133. on the banner

2134. so even when we're loving people

2135. when we're serving the poor

  2136. our hope is that

  2137. they'll ultimately

  2138. recognize the true issue

  2139. of justice

  2140. and that's the issue

  2141. of being reconciled

  2142. with God

  2143. of receiving his forgiveness

  2144. so that's why justice

2145. is not just social justice

  2146. it's not just charity

  2147. or mercy

  2148. but it's actually missional

  2149. and that's something

2150. that I need constant reminder

2151. of and I hope that

  2152. God and his spirit

  2153. would continually

  2154. remind us as well

2155. so I'll be very brief

  2156. there's a bunch of things

2157. that I can share about

  2158. the short

  2159. you know

  2160. summary

  2161. won't do

  2162. these things justice

  2163. Chris got it there

  2164. but

  2165. but hopefully

  2166. in the coming weeks

  2167. and months

  2168. you will

2169. you'll be able to see

  2170. more spotlights

2171. of what God is doing

2172. in and around the community

  2173. there's a few things

2174. that have really kind of

  2175. risen up from the

  2176. grassroots of

  2177. of Watermark

  2178. one is

  2179. St. Barnabas Society

2180. you might have heard of it

2181. over the past year or two

  2182. it just started from

  2183. one community group

  2184. seeing a need

  2185. in their

2186. in the Kennedy Town area

  2187. in the western district

2188. and they started going out

  2189. to this NGO

  2190. this Christian NGO

  2191. that serves the elderly

  2192. that serves street sleepers

  2193. and homeless people

  2194. and we really came

  2195. alongside

  2196. them as a church

  2197. to help them actually

2198. start a kids learning club

  2199. to actually reach

  2200. underprivileged kids

  2201. families

  2202. and they've started

  2203. a weekly program

  2204. tutoring kids

  2205. having their parents

  2206. come over for

2207. like a home cooked meal

  2208. and that's something

2209. that we want to continue

  2210. partnering with them

  2211. as well

  2212. you might have seen

  2213. like you know

  2214. half a dozen

  2215. a dozen

  2216. maybe even 20

  2217. Nepali kids

  2218. South Asian kids

  2219. running around Watermark

  2220. they're from an NGO

  2221. called Inner City Ministries

  2222. that serves in Jordan

  2223. and Yamate

  2224. and that whole area

  2225. and it's just beautiful

  2226. for me to see

  2227. these kids

  2228. come into our midst

  2229. because it's not

  2230. outreach anymore

2231. we always think of it

  2232. as us and them

2233. but they're in our midst

  2234. now

2235. they're part of our church

  2236. at least that's what

  2237. we're working towards

  2238. as much as

  2239. normal things like

  2240. you know

  2241. race and language

  2242. and culture

  2243. can still

  2244. separate us

  2245. I think the beautiful

  2246. thing is

  2247. God is using

  2248. this opportunity

  2249. to break down

  2250. barriers that we have

  2251. in our very hearts

  2252. you know

  2253. that they're the other

  2254. you know

  2255. they're poor

  2256. they're dirty

  2257. they're smelly

  2258. which may be true

  2259. to be honest

  2260. none of them

  2261. are here hopefully

  2262. but the beautiful

  2263. thing is

  2264. you know

2265. I've walked up to them

  2266. and smelled

  2267. some of them before

  2268. and they need

  2269. cleaning

  2270. they need

  2271. people to walk

  2272. alongside them

  2273. and teach them

  2274. about personal hygiene

  2275. so that's the beauty

  2276. that we can see

  2277. God working

  2278. and so

  2279. inner city is another

  2280. big thing

  2281. and sons and daughters

  2282. is another one

  2283. they reach out to

  2284. the working girls

  2285. the mama sons

  2286. even the customers

2287. in all the red light

  2288. districts in Hong Kong

  2289. especially

  2290. Lockhart Road

  2291. in Wan Chai

  2292. and it's

  2293. that's still something

  2294. that we're really

  2295. trying to spotlight

  2296. and to build up

  2297. but just seeing

  2298. a few people

  2299. in Watermark

  2300. or even like

  2301. half a community group

  2302. kind of

  2303. being passionate

  2304. about reaching

  2305. these ladies

  2306. who

  2307. a lot of them

  2308. don't really

  2309. want to be there

  2310. they don't want

  2311. to be on Lockhart

  2312. they don't want

2313. to be at the clubs

  2314. they don't want

  2315. to be selling

  2316. their bodies

  2317. but for one reason

  2318. or another

  2319. they think

  2320. they have no choice

  2321. so

  2322. so that's another thing

  2323. and there's also

  2324. little things

  2325. that are going on

  2326. you know

  2327. community group

  2328. that's going out

  2329. to elderly homes

  2330. regularly

  2331. just to show love

  2332. to people

  2333. who are

  2334. maybe often

  2335. emotionally neglected

  2336. there's

  2337. I know there's a group

  2338. that's giving bread

  2339. and delivering bread

  2340. to people

  2341. who need food

  2342. and those are

  2343. just little things

  2344. that we're hearing

  2345. and I pray

  2346. that it's not

  2347. just something

  2348. that really

  2349. the vision

  2350. the heart

  2351. is not something

  2352. that the elders

  2353. or me

  2354. just like coming

  2355. and saying

2356. we got to do this

  2357. and this

  2358. and this

  2359. and this

  2360. all of these

  2361. things

  2362. is things

  2363. that we've

  2364. identified

  2365. as things

  2366. that have come

  2367. up from the

  2368. grassroots

  2369. from community

  2370. groups

  2371. from a few

  2372. people who have

  2373. just gotten

  2374. together

  2375. and seen

  2376. hey this is

  2377. unjust

  2378. there's something

  2379. wrong here

  2380. God does not

  2381. like this situation

  2382. and we want

  2383. to be his hands

  2384. and feet

  2385. and actually

  2386. make a small

  2387. difference

  2388. so I'm really

  2389. looking forward

  2390. to what's happening

  2391. what's going to be

  2392. happening in the next

  2393. six months

  2394. a year

  2395. what other things

  2396. God might

  2397. might do

  2398. if you heard

  2399. anything that I've

  2400. shared so far

  2401. in terms of

  2402. what's already

  2403. going on

  2404. you know

  2405. inner city

  2406. sons and daughters

  2407. St. Barnabas

  2408. or the other things

  2409. please speak to me

  2410. we'd love to continue

  2411. just mobilizing

  2412. and remembering

  2413. that

  2414. you know

  2415. justice isn't

  2416. really an option

  2417. you know

  2418. if we profess

  2419. to be walking

  2420. with the Lord

  2421. and he is

  2422. the Lord

  2423. of justice

  2424. it's not

  2425. really something

  2426. that we add

  2427. on to our

  2428. walk

  2429. as a Christian

  2430. it's something

  2431. that we

  2432. we just have

  2433. to do

  2434. and he calls

  2435. us to do

  2436. if we're

  2437. you know

  2438. in love

  2439. with the Lord

  2440. and if we're

  2441. following him

  2442. so thanks so much

  2443. and I will

  2444. pass on to

  2445. Franklin and

  2446. Graham

  2447. our elders

  2448. who will speak

  2449. about finances

  2450. because all

  2451. these things

  2452. that we've

  2453. talked about

  2454. need finances

  2455. and need

  2456. human resources

  2457. thanks guys

  2458. this is the

  2459. part of the

  2460. service

  2461. where all

  2462. the

  2463. bankers

  2464. investment

  2465. bankers

  2466. and finance

  2467. people

  2468. actually wake

  2469. up

  2470. okay

  2471. it's otherwise

  2472. known as the

  2473. Jerry Maguire

  2474. part of the

  2475. sermon

  2476. show me the

  2477. money

  2478. okay

  2479. which is what

  2480. we plan to

  2481. do

  2482. I'm

  2483. I'm Graham

  2484. one of the

  2485. elders

  2486. and this is

  2487. I'm Franklin

  2488. I'm the other

  2489. elder

  2490. good

  2491. so we

  2492. we haven't

  2493. got exciting

  2494. stories

  2495. but we got

  2496. something better

  2497. than that

  2498. we got

  2499. bar graphs

  2500. okay

  2501. so here we

  2502. go

  2503. if you have

  2504. a look at

  2505. there

  2506. I want to

  2507. start

  2508. the most

  2509. beautiful

  2510. figure to

  2511. me

  2512. is the

  2513. little

  2514. last one

  2515. the little

  2516. blue

  2517. bar graph

  2518. that

  2519. actually

  2520. shows how

  2521. generous

  2522. you guys

  2523. have been

  2524. we

  2525. at

  2526. Watermark

  2527. ages ago

  2528. we always

  2529. want to be

  2530. known as

  2531. a generous

  2532. church

  2533. so

  2534. we're going

  2535. to begin

  2536. with a

  2537. thank you

  2538. and that

  2539. really is

  2540. us as a

  2541. family

  2542. contributing

  2543. over

  2544. nine

  2545. million

  2546. dollars

  2547. in giving

  2548. last year

  2549. which is

  2550. a 13%

  2551. increase

  2552. over the

  2553. year before

  2554. so thanks

  2555. everyone

  2556. and thanks

  2557. to yourselves

  2558. right

  2559. we're very

  2560. blessed

  2561. and we're

  2562. very humbled

  2563. to see

  2564. those figures

  2565. yes indeed

  2566. we're very

  2567. very blessed

  2568. we're so

  2569. blessed that

  2570. in November

  2571. of last year

  2572. we made

  2573. an

  2574. challenge

  2575. to all

  2576. of us

  2577. that

  2578. the weekend

  2579. of December

  2580. 8th

  2581. will give

  2582. all that

  2583. giving away

  2584. and

  2585. by grace

  2586. that is

  2587. the biggest

  2588. weekend

  2589. we have

  2590. ever

  2591. received

  2592. in

  2593. Fortemark

  2594. and

  2595. we gave

  2596. away

  2597. a million

  2598. and a half

  2599. dollars

  2600. on that

  2601. that we

  2602. received

  2603. that weekend

  2604. and the

  2605. money that

  2606. we just

  2607. want to let

  2608. you know

  2609. that the

  2610. money that

  2611. was received

  2612. went into

  2613. several

  2614. major ministries

  2615. we went

  2616. to help

  2617. the church

  2618. planters

  2619. with City

  2620. of City

  2621. reaching

  2622. our report

  2623. that Jeremy

  2624. mentioned

  2625. for St.

  2626. Barnabas

  2627. and

  2628. Jordan

  2629. the Kids

  2630. Club

  2631. for

  2632. inner city

  2633. ministries

  2634. and several

  2635. other ministries

  2636. so

  2637. but with

  2638. all these

  2639. investments

  2640. we may not

  2641. see an

  2642. immediate

  2643. return

  2644. but Lord

  2645. will

  2646. continue

  2647. to challenge

  2648. us and

  2649. show us

  2650. and give

  2651. us a

  2652. vision

  2653. that

  2654. these

  2655. things

  2656. these

  2657. investments

  2658. will be

  2659. worth it

  2660. and

  2661. reaching out

  2662. to the

  2663. reach

  2664. in the

  2665. gospel

  2666. good

  2667. all right

  2668. now I've

  2669. given

  2670. there's always

  2671. in accounting

  2672. I learnt

  2673. in school

  2674. there's these

  2675. things called

  2676. a T

  2677. account

  2678. right

  2679. there's a

  2680. debit

  2681. and there's

  2682. a credit

  2683. so I've

  2684. just told

  2685. you about

  2686. the little

  2687. blue graph

  2688. and now

  2689. I have to

  2690. tell you

  2691. about the

  2692. green

  2693. little bar

  2694. chart

  2695. there

  2696. like

  2697. anything

  2698. in Hong

  2699. Kong

  2700. things go

  2701. up

  2702. right

  2703. so that's

  2704. the reality

  2705. of what

  2706. happened

  2707. to us

  2708. over the

  2709. past year

  2710. our

  2711. expenses

  2712. went up

  2713. and

  2714. particularly

  2715. we've

  2716. the cost

  2717. of this

  2718. venue

  2719. right

  2720. just being

  2721. in here

  2722. we've

  2723. seen a

  2724. dramatic

  2725. increase

  2726. in cost

  2727. we've

  2728. had to

  2729. hire

  2730. removal

  2731. services

  2732. they charge

  2733. us to

  2734. keep our

  2735. equipment

  2736. here during

  2737. the week

  2738. and all

  2739. that's

  2740. kind of

  2741. led to

  2742. an increase

  2743. of

  2744. expenses

  2745. of over

  2746. a million

  2747. dollars

  2748. so that's

  2749. kind of

  2750. what that

  2751. little

  2752. green

  2753. bar

  2754. indicates

  2755. is our

  2756. expenses

  2757. have really

  2758. gone up

  2759. a lot

  2760. compared

  2761. to the

  2762. previous

  2763. year

  2764. together

  2765. with

  2766. the

  2767. expenses

  2768. if you

  2769. see the

  2770. blue

  2771. chart

  2772. on

  2773. 2012

  2774. and

  2775. 2013

  2776. we have

  2777. a year

  2778. ago

  2779. we had

  2780. some

  2781. really low

  2782. donations

  2783. plus the

  2784. big

  2785. expenses

  2786. so the

  2787. savings

  2788. that we

  2789. have in

  2790. our bank

  2791. account

  2792. we have

  2793. the very

  2794. honest

  2795. and upright

  2796. with you

  2797. that has

  2798. kind of

  2799. depleted

  2800. so this

  2801. whole year

  2802. we have

  2803. been very

  2804. careful

  2805. in our

  2806. spending

  2807. so that

  2808. we will

  2809. not

  2810. continue

  2811. going

  2812. to

  2813. red

  2814. but

  2815. when we

  2816. are reducing

  2817. expenses

  2818. we don't

  2819. want to

  2820. reduce

  2821. our

  2822. outreach

  2823. efforts

  2824. our

  2825. trainings

  2826. and the

  2827. ministry

  2828. that is

  2829. needed

  2830. for the

  2831. church

  2832. so we'll

  2833. continue

  2834. to report

  2835. these

  2836. figures

  2837. to you

  2838. as a

  2839. watermark

  2840. family

  2841. on a

  2842. monthly

  2843. basis

  2844. so you

  2845. will be

  2846. aware

  2847. and we

  2848. hold

  2849. us

  2850. accountable

  2851. for

  2852. our

  2853. spending

  2854. someone

  2855. asked me

  2856. about

  2857. a week

  2858. ago

  2859. they said

  2860. is there

  2861. something

  2862. special

  2863. in the

  2864. coffee

  2865. they serve

  2866. a watermark

  2867. because there's

  2868. an awful lot

  2869. of pregnant

  2870. women around

  2871. so I just

  2872. don't put

  2873. anything in

  2874. the coffee

  2875. but our

  2876. family's

  2877. growing

  2878. which is

  2879. fantastic

  2880. right

  2881. I mean

  2882. we're

  2883. growing

  2884. from the

  2885. ground up

  2886. from having

  2887. babies

  2888. from people

  2889. coming in

  2890. which is a

  2891. wonderful

  2892. thing

  2893. but that

  2894. kind of

  2895. means

  2896. an increase

  2897. in expenses

  2898. as well

  2899. and we

  2900. we've got

  2901. to make

  2902. allowances

  2903. for that

  2904. you know

  2905. we hope

  2906. to bring

  2907. more

  2908. permanent

  2909. staff

  2910. members

  2911. on board

  2912. and also

  2913. we're

  2914. praying

  2915. for a

  2916. permanent

  2917. venue

  2918. as well

  2919. so what

  2920. we've done

  2921. is we've

  2922. taken into

  2923. consideration

  2924. the giving

  2925. of last

  2926. year

  2927. that

  2928. nine

  2929. million

  2930. dollar

  2931. figure

  2932. I

  2933. mentioned

  2934. and we've

  2935. taken into

  2936. account what

  2937. we've learned

  2938. from our

  2939. expenses

  2940. and we've

  2941. prepared a

  2942. budget

  2943. this year

  2944. if you can

  2945. have a look

  2946. just can we

  2947. go back

  2948. one

  2949. just before

  2950. that last

  2951. little gray

  2952. box at

  2953. the end

  2954. you see

  2955. that's

  2956. perfectly

  2957. in line

  2958. with the

  2959. little blue

  2960. giving thing

  2961. so we've

  2962. been good

  2963. stewards

  2964. and we're

  2965. trying to

  2966. match our

  2967. budget

  2968. to our

  2969. giving for

  2970. the next

  2971. year

  2972. and Jackie's

  2973. going to

  2974. show us

  2975. that we

  2976. moved from

  2977. bar graphs

  2978. to pie charts

  2979. it just gets

  2980. better and

  2981. better

  2982. okay so

  2983. that's kind

  2984. of how we've

  2985. broken it up

  2986. right

  2987. I don't know

  2988. you can see

  2989. that little

  2990. figure up

  2991. there

  2992. it says

  2993. budgeted

  2994. spending

  2995. from last

  2996. year

  2997. was

  2998. 2.3

  2999. million

  3000. more

  3001. right

  3002. so

  3003. it's

  3004. what

  3005. Franklin

  3006. already

  3007. mentioned

  3008. about us

  3009. us using

  3010. a lot

  3011. of the

  3012. church

  3013. saving

  3014. so that's

  3015. kind of

  3016. how our

  3017. ministry

  3018. has been

  3019. broken up

  3020. into the

  3021. different

  3022. factors

  3023. and we're

  3024. basing it

  3025. on you

  3026. can see

  3027. a monthly

  3028. giving

  3029. of around

  3030. 750 to

  3031. 800,000

  3032. is what we

  3033. need

  3034. as a

  3035. family

  3036. good so

  3037. what we

  3038. ask

  3039. and what

  3040. we

  3041. really

  3042. is

  3043. to

  3044. continue

  3045. to

  3046. pray

  3047. right

  3048. pray

  3049. that

  3050. God

  3051. will

  3052. bless

  3053. us

  3054. and

  3055. continue

  3056. to

  3057. provide

  3058. for our

  3059. needs

  3060. which

  3061. he

  3062. has

  3063. done

  3064. we

  3065. just

  3066. need

  3067. to

  3068. look

  3069. over

  3070. our

  3071. shoulder

  3072. and

  3073. this

  3074. is

  3075. a

  3076. little

  3077. miracle

  3078. that's

  3079. happened

  3080. and

  3081. he's

  3082. continued

  3083. to

  3084. provide

  3085. for

  3086. our

  3087. needs

  3088. and

  3089. also

  3090. don't

  3091. forget

  3092. right

  3093. everything

  3094. that

  3095. we've

  3096. heard

  3097. gone

  3098. before

  3099. us

  3100. community

  3101. groups

  3102. missional

  3103. justice

  3104. university

  3105. that's

  3106. all

  3107. part

  3108. of

  3109. this

  3110. we're

  3111. all

  3112. sowing

  3113. into

  3114. throughout

  3115. the year

  3116. I've

  3117. always

  3118. been

  3119. reminded

  3120. of

  3121. this

  3122. verse

  3123. from

  3124. the

  3125. Bible

  3126. from

  3127. Philippians

  3128. 1

  3129. 3

  3130. to

  3131. 6

  3132. and

  3133. we

  3134. read

  3135. to

  3136. you

  3137. I

  3138. thank

  3139. my

  3140. God

  3141. every

  3142. time

  3143. I

  3144. remember

  3145. you

  3146. in

  3147. all

  3148. my

  3149. prayers

  3150. for

  3151. all

  3152. of

  3153. you

  3154. I

  3155. always

  3156. pray

  3157. with

  3158. joy

  3159. because

  3160. of

  3161. your

  3162. partnership

  3163. in

  3164. the

  3165. gospel

  3166. from

  3167. the

  3168. first

  3169. day

  3170. until

  3171. now

  3172. be

  3173. confident

  3174. of

  3175. this

  3176. that

  3177. he

  3178. who

  3179. began

  3180. a

  3181. good

  3182. work

  3183. in

  3184. you

  3185. will

  3186. carry

  3187. until

  3188. the

  3189. day

  3190. of

  3191. Christ

  3192. Jesus

  3193. just

  3194. if

  3195. you

  3196. look

  3197. behind

  3198. me

  3199. one

  3200. last

  3201. thing

  3202. this

  3203. is

  3204. a

  3205. celebration

  3206. of

  3207. what

  3208. we've

  3209. been

  3210. able

  3211. to

  3212. do

  3213. over

  3214. the

  3215. past

  3216. year

  3217. we're

  3218. not

  3219. going

  3220. to

  3221. go

  3222. into

  3223. all

  3224. the

  3225. details

  3226. but

  3227. it

  3228. really

  3229. is

  3230. big

  3231. highlights

  3232. of

  3233. people

  3234. we've

  3235. managed

  3236. to bring

  3237. out

  3238. things

  3239. we've

  3240. managed

  3241. to

  3242. do

  3243. just

  3244. as

  3245. a

  3246. church

  3247. community

  3248. all

  3249. of

  3250. it

  3251. costs

  3252. money

  3253. and

  3254. but

  3255. it

  3256. is

  3257. reaching

  3258. out

  3259. the

  3260. gospel

  3261. if

  3262. you

  3263. do

  3264. have

  3265. any

  3266. more

  3267. detailed

  3268. questions

  3269. please

  3270. come

  3271. speak

  3272. to

  3273. the

  3274. leaders

  3275. or

  3276. us

  3277. as

  3278. elders

  3279. afterwards

  3280. and

  3281. we're

  3282. happy

  3283. to

  3284. hear

  3285. your

  3286. questions

  3287. and

  3288. hopefully

  3289. give

  3290. you

  3291. an

  3292. answer

  3293. thanks

  3294. very

  3295. much

  3296. Tobin

  3297. okay

  3298. so

  3299. that

  3300. was

  3301. that

  3302. was

  3303. much

  3304. better

  3305. than

  3306. AGM

  3307. wasn't

  3308. it

  3309. come

  3310. on

  3311. guys

  3312. is

  3313. that

  3314. better

  3315. than

  3316. sitting

  3317. on

  3318. a

  3319. quorum

  3320. raising

  3321. your

  3322. hands

  3323. and all

  3324. that

  3325. stuff

  3326. you

  3327. know

  3328. it's

  3329. amazing

  3330. when

  3331. you

  3332. look

  3333. at

  3334. that

  3335. year

  3336. chart

  3337. what

  3338. God

  3339. has

  3340. allowed

  3341. us

  3342. as a

  3343. church

  3344. to be

  3345. a

  3346. part

  3347. of

  3348. and

  3349. all

  3350. the

  3351. things

  3352. that

  3353. he's

  3354. allowed

  3355. to

  3356. and

  3357. when

  3358. you

  3359. think

  3360. about

  3361. I

  3362. realize

  3363. one

  3364. of the

  3365. craziness

  3366. about

  3367. ministry

  3368. as I've

  3369. been doing

  3370. it for

  3371. 30

  3372. years

  3373. now

  3374. is that

  3375. so much

  3376. of what

  3377. we see

  3378. we don't

  3379. see

  3380. we're not

  3381. going to

  3382. see what's

  3383. going to

  3384. happen

  3385. in the lives

  3386. of the

  3387. students

  3388. a lot

  3389. of the

  3390. students

  3391. are going

  3392. to leave

  3393. and they

  3394. go to

  3395. their

  3396. other

  3397. countries

  3398. we're

  3399. not

  3400. going

  3401. to

  3402. see

  3403. what's

  3404. going

  3405. to

  3406. happen

  3407. in

  3408. the

  3409. life

  3410. of

  3411. some

  3412. of

  3413. the

  3414. kids

  3415. because

  3416. their

  3417. families

  3418. are going

  3419. to

  3420. transfer

  3421. and they're

3422. going to leave and they're going to go two years to New York or to Singapore or someplace like that

3423. what we know is that our God is going with them

3424. and however long they're here he's been challenging us as a church to plant seeds of gospel the resources he's given us to allow those things to grow and to flourish and to change lives and things that are happening we're going to end right now Christina and I were talking and one of the things we talked about we said you know I said to her just yesterday last night actually we said so what do you want the church to look like 20 years from now and she said to me you know it doesn't really matter

3425. if Christ isn't at the center of it

3426. if Christ is at the center of it then he's in control and he's going to take care of it and he's going to grow it and it's going to happen but if he's not we can grow this massive mega church and it won't matter because it won't last

3427. I wondered if I was going to share this with you but I want to share this with you just so you can keep us accountable you can keep me accountable but actually so we can keep the church family accountable because it's not just me saying it

3428. it's us doing it as a family in the year to come we want to reach out to other campuses we've partnership with churches in America and other organizations and they're going to start sending interns with us

3429. and that's that's part of the things we're praying about and doing and looking at in the year to come we want to keep training everybody in this church

3430. we want you guys to go deeper in your love for God's word we want you to understand theology we're going to put on classes my mentor the guy who trained me

3431. in seminary Dr. Hannah is going to come and he's going to be a consultant for us for two months and he's going to do Bible study classes and church history classes

3432. and all of these things we want you to take part of because we want you to grow and to develop

3433. we want to start Mandarin Bible studies and as David said we've already started the Bible study so

3434. if you're a Mandarin speaker or you know a Mandarin speaker Thursday night at the community center there's a fellowship there for Mandarin speakers to learn God's word in their native tongue

3435. we want to do that and our hope is that one day that that will plant into a church

3436. we want to keep planting churches we want to keep training pastors and and and the hope is at the end of this next year

3437. that we would have developed a team a launch team a group of people and that we say okay we have a countdown now

3438. and so from one year from now we want to plant another church community maybe two and so that's what we're praying for

3439. but we realize that it's not going to work unless we do it as a family we probably need to start a second service

3440. and I've been fighting it been fighting it because of the community but you know as we as we continue to grow not to grab people from other churches

3441. but to get people who aren't in church we probably need to continue that because when people come and they see something this size

3442. they they don't necessarily want to bring their friends and so we need to pray about that

3443. we need to realize what it's going to look like for us just to trust the Lord and to move forward in this process

3444. and it's not just the staff saying it because we're all priests we're all called to do it

3445. and so I want to end our time by taking communion together

3446. because that's how the early church did it they took communion together

3447. and then they ate a big meal together a love feast

3448. the interesting thing about Christianity is this

  3449. in every other religion

  3450. in business

3451. however you want to do it when you want to honor somebody what you normally do is you make an image of them

3452. or you put their name on a building and there's a lot of names on buildings all around Hong Kong

3453. and those people are being honored for what they've done and some of that's amazing stuff

3454. but in Christianity what we're told in the Gospels and in 1 Corinthians is

3455. the way we honor the Lord is we take a meal

3456. and in this meal we're told that we take part

3457. in the symbolism of God's body

  3458. we eat the bread

  3459. we drink the wine

3460. we don't make an image of anything but we take those things into us

3461. the difference between Christianity and every other religion is when we do this

3462. what we're doing is we're saying that Christ

  3463. is inside of us

3464. when you take the communion

3465. what you're saying theologically is

  3466. God

  3467. is with you

3468. so the question we have to ask ourselves

3469. as we walk through this day is what does it mean

3470. for God to be with us

3471. what does it look like for that to happen as a church

3472. the difference between Christianity and every other religion is that when we take communion

  3473. we take it together

3474. it doesn't just mean that God is in us

3475. that God is with us

3476. that God is with you as you're walking together

3477. as you're going to work

3478. as you're living in home

  3479. as you're a dad

  3480. as you're a mom

  3481. as you're a single

  3482. as you're a student

  3483. as you're a worker

  3484. whatever you're doing

3485. God is with you as you're doing it

3486. but what it also means is that God is with us

3487. that we are a family

3488. the symbolism of why we take communion

3489. as if we don't take communion apart from the big family

3490. because the meaning of communion is

3491. is that we are a family

  3492. we walk together

  3493. we pray together

  3494. we serve together

  3495. we love together

  3496. we cry together

  3497. we celebrate together

  3498. we rejoice together

3499. knowing that God has brought us together

  3500. a family

  3501. we breathe together

  3502. we MERCHED

  3503. we pray together

  3504. Mike

  3505. at the'll

  3506. we join

  3507. the next song

  3508. we pray together

  3509. we pray together

  3510. we pray together

  3511. we pray together

  3512. we pray together

  3513. we pray together

  3514. we pray together

  3515. we pray together

  3516. we pray together

  3517. we pray together

  3518. we pray together

  3519. we pray together

  3520. we pray together

  3521. we pray together

  3522. we pray together

  3523. we pray together
