  1. Father, we don't really like to admit before you that we are confused.

  2. Father, we find it a lot easier to think that your word is confused and that ultimately you are confused.

  3. So, Father, we're just being honest with you about that.

  4. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would do a mighty work in our lives this morning as we think about your word.

  5. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would reveal to us our divided heart and our confusion.

  6. And at the same time, Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would lead us to see the wisdom of your word, your great unsurpassed wisdom and justice and mercy.

  7. And we ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would incline our hearts, turn our hearts to you and to your wisdom and to your Son, wisdom made flesh, who died upon the cross for us.

  8. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Amen. Please be seated.

  10. Nowadays, even people in their mid-20s can start being curmudgeons and can tell teenagers how much harder it was in high school than it was for them.

  11. Amen.

  12. Amen.

  13. My youngest son in geography.

  14. This is geography in grade nine.

  15. I can't remember now why, but in the unit where they were covering the continental drift, you know, the drift of the continents, as part of that in their class time, they watched the Ice Age III movie.

  16. For those of you who know that movie, it's an animated film about a chipmunk trying to get an acorn.

  17. At the same time, talking about global warming and climate change, they watched The Day After Tomorrow and the movie 2012, which, of course, is spectacularly ironic.

  18. It was based, of course, on Al Gore's book earlier.

  19. And to watch it now for information when it's obviously been completely and utterly proven to be false, of course, is an even deeper irony.

  20. But that's actually part of what was happening in grade nine geography, at least in one particular school.

  21. And so now it is that people, many of you, a few years older than my son Tommy, can now start to tell people how harder it was in high school and how more rigorous it was for you than it is for the current generation.

  22. And so for those of us who are quite a bit past our early 20s, and we can even be more deeply ingrained in our curmudgeonly view of current education.

  23. But I mention all of this.

  24. I mention Ice Age, for instance.

  25. Actually, just last night, you know, I'm always following high culture in movies.

  26. And so we watched The Croods last night, which was about a Stone Age family dealing with catastrophes.

  27. And often, of course, movies that talk about something like the end of the Ice Age are really making comments about today.

  28. And Hollywood has movies about sort of the end of the world.

  29. I'm not trying to put them down just as according to Al Gore.

  30. But the fact is that on one hand, when us modern or postmodern people figure out what we are, listen to texts like Ken read just a few moments ago about Revelation chapter eight.

  31. It can sound sort of problematic to us.

  32. Like, George, how on earth can the Bible talk about stuff like this?

  33. End of the world.

  34. Like, really?

  35. All these things are going to be happening.

  36. Come on.

  37. How on earth can we possibly take the Bible seriously?

  38. Actually, the thing is that we need...

  39. Here's the thing.

  40. If you could put the first point up, Andrew.

  41. Here's the thing.

  42. We need to sort of have a bit of a thing to clear our minds a little bit as we start to listen to Revelation eight.

  43. And the first thing that we need to understand is this.

  44. That the end of all things can be sensationalized or forgotten, but cannot be reasonably denied.

  45. I mean, actually, for many decades, there's different stories or tales of some type of imminent ecological catastrophe that's going to befall the planet.

  46. And obviously, some of those, as some of them, are shown not to be the case.

  47. And there's always, obviously, people who say, of course, we shouldn't trust these things.

  48. Human ingenuity will get over it.

  49. But, in fact, Hollywood talks about these things.

  50. And whether or not global warming and global climate change caused by our use of fossil fuels, whether or not that is correct,

  51. the fact of the matter is that science, in fact, does say that there will be the end of all things.

  52. Like, that can't be denied.

  53. But the second law of thermodynamics wins.

  54. And the second law of thermodynamics says that the amount of entropy, unusable sort of random energy in a system, is always increasing.

  55. So whether it's a billion, billion, billion, billion years from now, eventually all the planets, all the galaxies, all the stars, there will be just entropy.

  56. They will all come to an end.

  57. That's what science tells us.

  58. And long before entropy wins, our own planet will be completely and utterly destroyed.

  59. The sun is winding down.

  60. The sun is winding down.

  61. And at some point in time, as sufficient amount of it is burned up and its mass changes, the powers that keep the sun at its current size will start to weaken and the sun will expand.

  62. And as the sun expands, Earth will be burned to a crisp.

  63. And how that will look in terms of how it's described, of course, I don't know how that will be.

  64. But while we might not want to think about it or we might want to sensationalize it, the fact of the matter is that the end of all things cannot reasonably be denied.

  65. And if we listen to Revelation 8 thinking that it can be reasonably denied and hence any type of talk about the end of all things is just completely and utterly foolish, showing how stupid the Bible is,

  66. then we won't even begin to have any type of reasonable discussion or reading of the text.

  67. We need to, in a sense, have, like, you know how sometimes, I've never been to one, but they talk about in wine tasting, you have something to cleanse the palate so you can taste something fresh.

  68. We need to have that when we come to read such texts as Revelation chapter 8.

    Revelation 8 chapter mention

  69. Something to sort of cleanse the palate in the mind and make us just pause for a second and say, okay, one moment.

  70. And before I sort of go all ballistic on this text, before I start rolling my eyes to the back of my head, let's just, the end of the world cannot reasonably be denied.

  71. In fact, actually, one of the very interesting things is to actually look at what the Bible is saying, comparing it to what everything else can possibly say.

  72. Like, what does a certain form of science typified by guys like Richard Dawkins, what does it have to say about the end of the world?

  73. What does Buddhism have to say, or Islam, or Hinduism, or the spirituality that we've cobbled together from bits and pieces to suit ourselves?

  74. Like, the fact of the matter is, is that often people have problems when they look at the Bible, but they don't, we often forget as human beings that once we've asked a question, that question touches everything.

  75. It's not as if we can just ask a question of the Bible, which is, in a sense, implicitly a question that we can ask of Buddhism, or Islam, or Hinduism, or scientism, or naturalism, or empiricism, or a whole pile of other isms, or Marxism, or feminism, or queer theory.

  76. Like, the fact is that, well, one moment, before we sort of maybe dismiss what the Bible says, how does it actually stack up compared to what a whole range of other things would actually say about the end of all things, given that the end of all things cannot be reasonably denied?

  77. It cannot be reasonably denied.

  78. The timing of it can be talked about, but the end of it cannot be reasonably denied.

  79. So how is it actually that the Bible and Christianity fares if we actually start to just take another step back and look at things?

  80. And here, Andrew, if you could put up the next slide, here's the thing that I would suggest.

  81. I can only have hope if the living God, the God of the Bible, is the one who brings all things to an end.

  82. I can only have hope if the living God is the one who brings all things to an end.

  83. The second law of thermodynamics shows no mercy.

  84. This week on Monday, I had a physical.

  85. I'm a bad boy.

  86. I haven't had a physical for like eight years, seven years.

  87. I know you're supposed to, when you get to be my age, have them every year.

  88. I finally had a physical.

  89. At the start of the physical, the doctor asked me how tall I was.

  90. So I told them, I used to be this height.

  91. I know I'm shorter.

  92. I like telling my kids that gravity wins.

  93. And so I wasn't sure how much I've shrunk since I hit my peak at a particular age.

  94. But here's the thing about this particular text, that the second law of thermodynamics doesn't show any type of mercy and doesn't give us any type of hope.

  95. Now, we shouldn't choose a philosophy just because it gives us hope.

  96. But on the other hand, we shouldn't dismiss hope as a clue in terms of the meaning of the universe and the meaning of life.

  97. Like, why is it that hope is so attractive?

  98. Why is it that hope seems to be something which is deeply rooted in human beings?

  99. Why is it that so many novels and movies, even The Crudes, that movie last night, part of it was about a system of rules and thinkings which extinguished hope in people?

  100. Like, why is it that we understand that hope is something which is significant?

  101. And if that's the case, well, then what exactly is it that Islam or Hinduism or Buddhism or secularism or this scientific discovery, like, how does that fit with hope?

  102. And we shouldn't pick something just because of hope.

  103. But on the other hand, a system of thinking, a text that talks about hope is something surely that fits in with part of the data that should be important to us when we're trying to figure out what actually is true

  104. and what it is that we should be serving, loving, obeying, trusting, and hoping in.

  105. And the fact is that if, in fact, the living God is the one who will bring all things to an end, then, if we read the Bible, we understand that at least there can be some hope that we can call out to God for mercy,

  106. that God can do something, that if there is a living God who will bring all things to an end, then perhaps there is meaning in life.

  107. Perhaps there is meaning even in suffering.

  108. Perhaps hope is a clue to the existence of the reality of the living God, the same living God who is revealed in Scripture and was most preeminently revealed in the person of Jesus and his death upon the cross.

  109. Now, some of you might say, George, did you hear what Ken read?

  110. A third of the earth, a third of the seas, a third of the fresh water.

  111. Like, George, how on earth do you think this text possibly talks about hope?

  112. Let's look.

  113. So if you have your Bibles, hopefully you brought your Bibles, let's turn to Revelation chapter 8.

    Revelation 8 chapter mention

  114. And if you forgot your Bibles, there's always, there's just one left here, but if you go to that door over there, there's always a few extra Bibles and you're welcome to keep it or return it after the service.

  115. And let's turn to Revelation chapter 8.

    Revelation 8 chapter mention

  116. It's the last book in the Bible, if you're not familiar with where the Bible, where the book of Revelation is.

  117. And we at Church of the Messiah were preaching through the book of Revelation.

  118. That's part of the way, preaching through books of the Bible, that we want to help ordinary people be confident, joyful disciples of Jesus Christ.

  119. And so what we're going to do is we're not going to look at the beginning of Revelation 8.

  120. We're going to go right to the hard part in Revelation 8.

  121. All of these terrible things that come on the planet.

  122. So start reading at verse 6.

  123. Verse 6.

  124. Now the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.

  125. The first angel blew his trumpet and there followed hail and fire mixed with blood.

  126. And these were thrown upon the earth.

  127. And a third of the fire, a third of the earth was burned up.

  128. And a third of the trees were burned up.

  129. And all the green grass was burned up.

  130. Just sort of put your finger there for a second, just to sort of give you the context.

  131. What happened earlier in the first five verses, we're going to look at those in a few moments.

  132. But the Lamb is revealed.

  133. He opens the seventh seal.

  134. There's a half an hour of silence in heaven.

  135. At the end of the half hour of silence of heaven, the seven angels come with trumpets.

  136. And then God gives an angel some incense.

  137. And the incense is thrown on the fire of an altar before the throne of God.

  138. And as the incense rises, because it burns in the fire, the prayers of Christians rise to God.

  139. And in response to the prayers of Christians rising to God, God sends the angel to the altar a second time.

  140. And this time the altar, the angel grabs fire and hurls the fire from the altar before the throne of God.

  141. He hurls it at the earth.

  142. And how it appears on earth is in these seven different visions, these seven different scenarios.

  143. And so the first one is, as I just read, and then the second angel blows his trumpet, verse 8.

  144. And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea.

  145. And a third of the sea became blood.

  146. A third of the living creatures in the sea died.

  147. And a third of the ships were destroyed.

  148. And just sort of pause here for a second.

  149. A couple of weeks ago, if you were here and you happen to remember, I talked about how one of the things,

  150. the ways the book of Revelation is written, it's a little bit like Groundhog Day.

  151. It sort of talks about a scenario of judgment.

  152. And then it looks like it talks about a scenario of judgments leading up to the final judgment.

  153. But it sort of goes over the same territory, but in a different way.

  154. And it's going to happen again another time in the book.

  155. And a way to understand these scenarios is a little bit like this, I think.

  156. Imagine that I gave you seven pictures of my daughter, Victoria.

  157. Maybe some of you have never met my daughter, Victoria.

  158. She goes to another church in Canada.

  159. And so I gave you seven pictures of my daughter, Victoria.

  160. Victoria, maybe my wife and I look at these seven pictures thinking that if you get these seven pictures and you look at them,

  161. you'll have a really good sense of Victoria.

  162. Now, if you look at all seven pictures, you'll get a real good sense of Victoria.

  163. But if you were to try to Photoshop all seven pictures and put them on top of each other,

  164. well, the nose would be in seven different places, the ears in seven different places.

  165. It would look like a Picasso painting.

  166. And you wouldn't have any vague idea if you took the seven pictures and superimposed them on each other.

  167. What on earth Victoria looked like?

  168. It would be more confusing afterwards than before.

  169. And I think that's what's happening here with these seven different scenarios,

  170. all describing the one throwing the fire on the earth.

  171. That we're to take each one of them as a bit of a scenario and sort of be captivated by the image,

  172. to think about the image, to meditate upon the image.

  173. Then there's sort of another image.

  174. And if you look at all seven of them together, in some way,

  175. it describes both things that go on in the planet right now.

  176. Like I'm guessing that if you lived in Chernobyl in the Ukraine,

  177. when the disaster happened, that you might have some resonance with this text.

  178. That maybe if you were a Christian living in Syria, parts of Syria today,

  179. you would have some resonance with this text.

  180. If you were a persecuted Christian in China,

  181. living in some area of unbelievable ecological devastation,

  182. you might have some resonance with this text.

  183. We live in post-industrial, very safe, democratic, capitalist Canada.

  184. We might not have the same type of resonance.

  185. But on one hand, the text describes things that go on in the planet today.

  186. And at the other hand, it will describe the end in some way that I don't know how all the seven images will fit together

  187. when the end of all things come.

  188. But we can take some confidence that when it all happens, if we are there,

  189. that we can see how in some way all these seven things somehow fit with what happens at the end of all things.

  190. But that we shouldn't get locked up into trying to nitpick how to put all of the seven images together,

  191. just as if I gave you seven pictures of Victoria, you wouldn't impose them all on each other.

  192. Yet you look at each, and after you've looked at each and thought about it and meditated upon it,

  193. you have some sense of the end.

  194. So we've done the first trumpet, the second trumpet.

  195. The third trumpet is verse 10.

  196. The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch.

  197. And it fell on a third of the rivers, on the springs of water.

  198. The name of the star is Wormwood.

  199. A third of the waters became Wormwood, and many people died from the water because it had been made bitter.

  200. Just sort of pause.

  201. So the first angel talks about the dry land.

  202. The second angel talks about the salt water.

  203. The third angel talks about fresh water.

  204. And now the fourth angel blew his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck.

  205. In the original language, it's as if the angel of God hurls a plague.

  206. Okay? Hurls a plague.

  207. And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so the third of their light might be darkened.

  208. And a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night.

  209. And there the idea is that for one, assuming you're at the equator and there's 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of night,

  210. it means that for four hours of the day there's complete and utter darkness.

  211. Complete darkness.

  212. And for a third of the evening there's complete darkness.

  213. No moon, no stars.

  214. None at all.

  215. Complete darkness in the sky.

  216. And then verse 13.

  217. Then I looked, and I heard an eagle.

  218. And it's sort of interesting, the eagle, we don't capture it, but an eagle in the Old Testament is an unclean bird.

  219. Ritually unclean.

  220. Then I heard an eagle crying with a loud voice as it flew directly overhead.

  221. Woe!

  222. Woe!

  223. Woe!

  224. Woe!

  225. To those who dwell on the earth at the blast of the other trumpets that the three angels are about to blow.

  226. Now, remember the original question is, I said in my second point that I can only have hope if the living God is the one who brings all things to an end.

  227. And this passage describes terrible suffering.

  228. Even my analogy about how some parts of the world might have great resonance with this text.

  229. If you are a persecuted Christian in a part of China suffering terrible ecological pollution destruction.

  230. If you're in a part of Syria, and we could go on.

  231. We could go on to places of great famine and great war and hardship.

  232. There might be parts of the world that Christians gathered, maybe just in some hut somewhere or somewhere in the bush, hiding around a Bible.

  233. That a text like this might have profound resonance to what they're experiencing.

  234. Whereas for us it becomes more of an intellectual puzzle influenced heavily by radio preachers who try to say, you know, the first thing is big oil and the second thing is, you know, whatever.

  235. You know, nuclear waste or whatever.

  236. And then there's North Korea and all that.

  237. I actually think that's profoundly unhelpful and means we don't read the text very clearly.

  238. But how with all this suffering is there hope?

  239. Here's the question.

  240. Andrew, if you could put it on.

  241. The Bible is posing us a question.

  242. Does suffering lead me to exalt myself against God?

  243. Or does suffering lead me to seek refuge in the immensity and sovereignty of the untamably good God?

  244. Now, even by posing this question, remember I said that part of the problem we have when we read the book of Revelation is that we don't read the book of Revelation realizing

  245. that it's an undeniable fact that all things will end.

  246. Like that's just undeniable.

  247. It's forgotten.

  248. It's ignored.

  249. We amuse ourselves to death.

  250. But it's undeniable that all things will end.

  251. And if we sort of just live in a state of constant amusement of ourselves and not thinking about it, then the things in the book of Revelation, we can't even begin to engage with them.

  252. But if we realize that the end of all things is in fact undeniable and then we can look a little bit about how Marxism or how psychoanalysis or queer theory or Buddhism or spirituality of our guru, how does this talk about the end of all things?

  253. Then all of a sudden there's a way for us to actually look at these things in a far different light.

  254. But here's the other thing is the fact of the matter is that many of us are deeply confused and conflicted about suffering without realizing it.

  255. It is not unusual for me to have a conversation with a person where something like this can happen within minutes of each other in the conversation.

  256. Where somebody can say, I will not worship a God who does not do something about evil and injustice.

  257. And then two minutes later they can say, I will not worship a God who judges.

  258. One moment.

  259. You don't want to worship a God because he doesn't judge injustice.

  260. But now you want to worship a God who judges.

  261. And then two minutes later they might say, I abhor, I hate people who divide the world into good people and bad people.

  262. Don't people understand that, you know, even with terrorists, even with what those people that, you know, our culture labels as terrorists,

  263. that there is good and bad in every person.

  264. That in fact, Solzhenitsyn said, is that the line dividing good and evil does not come between groups of people and nations and ideologies,

  265. but the line between separating good from evil goes right down the middle of every human being.

  266. And then two minutes later they might say, how dare God judge me as doing evil?

  267. Well, that's heavily conflicted thought.

  268. That's heavily conflicted thought.

  269. In fact, the irony is that we can go through this motion of how come God doesn't judge evil and injustice,

  270. and then go through how come God judges?

  271. That's a terrible thing.

  272. And how come we separate the world into good and evil when we should understand that good and evil sort of runs right through every individual.

  273. And then we say, how dare God judge me as if I have any evil about me or there's evil with me?

  274. And then we think the Bible's confused and conflicted.

  275. And we haven't understood that we have a deep confusion and confliction inside of us which is unrecognized

  276. and makes it hard for us to hear the Bible.

  277. And so the question of the text is, does suffering lead me to exalt myself against God,

  278. or does suffering lead me to seek refuge in the immensity and sovereignty of the untamably good God?

  279. And that comes through many ways in this text.

  280. The fact that in the first series of judgments it's a quarter, in the next it's a third.

  281. It's not total.

  282. There's a chance that there's even a pause between each of them,

  283. that at the end of all of these four, before we go into the final three,

  284. that there's this creature which is unclean like you and I are in and of ourselves.

  285. It says, whoa, whoa, whoa.

  286. You know, it's like, I know it's a slightly different whoa, but it's still a warning.

  287. It's like, you know, if we see a, I don't know, you know, maybe after church,

  288. you know, a little kid, a parent loses track of their little kid,

  289. and then we see them starting to go hurtling down,

  290. and, you know, maybe we think they're going to crash their head against that metal bar,

  291. and we go, whoa, stop, and we try to grab them, like we warn them.

  292. Like all the way through the text, that there's not yet total type of destruction.

  293. It's not as if it comes upon the human race without any type of warning.

  294. And at the same time, at a certain type of level,

  295. we understand certain types of things about suffering.

  296. Like, if, like, you know, surely, for many of us,

  297. for many of us, when we hear maybe about the death of a loved one or something like that,

  298. and maybe in a very tragic or terrible situation far from home,

  299. and one of our terrors for that person was that they died alone,

  300. that they suffered alone, that there was no one with them.

  301. If there was to be something which we knew was going to happen all of a sudden to Ottawa,

  302. and we only had maybe a half an hour, an hour before it hit,

  303. and that we didn't have time to run for it,

  304. surely for many of us, wouldn't we want to have someone with us at that time of anxiety?

  305. So if, in fact, that is the case, even with a human being,

  306. that we understand how there's something about suffering

  307. that makes us wish that there could be someone that we would suffer with,

  308. why is it that we necessarily think that suffering will somehow incline our hearts away from God?

  309. Is it, in fact, not possible that suffering can incline our hearts to God?

  310. Neither choice is inevitable.

  311. And that suffering could incline our hearts to God,

  312. that, in fact, apart from the fact that we have a fundamental hardness

  313. and rebellion against God, which is part of who we are,

  314. on the other hand, we can understand that if, in fact,

  315. we would want to have a person with us,

  316. why wouldn't we want to have God with us?

  317. Remember my second point was that it's,

  318. I can only have hope if the living God is the one who brings all things to an end.

  319. Now, some of you might say,

  320. okay, George, that's actually sort of interesting.

  321. Sort of interesting.

  322. But here's the problem, George.

  323. You can't deny this, George.

  324. You know, isn't it the case that so many people,

  325. when they read books like the book of Revelation,

  326. that it leads them to do nothing?

  327. Don't you think it sort of leads too many people to say,

  328. oh, well, God's going to be in control of it,

  329. so we don't have to do anything about ecological damage.

  330. Oh, God's going to do everything,

  331. so we don't have to deal with tsunamis.

  332. Oh, God's going to deal everything,

  333. so we don't have to deal with corrupt despots

  334. that just plunder the country

  335. and use their military to oppress the people.

  336. Don't you think, George, that reading texts like this,

  337. yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

  338. it gives you sort of hope,

  339. but it doesn't actually lead to any type of action.

  340. Don't you think, George,

  341. that secular people have a far greater bias

  342. towards fixing things and having action?

  343. Well, obviously I can't deny

  344. that there are people who read the book of Revelation

  345. and are led to a complete and utter type of pietism

  346. and quietism,

  347. which means that we don't do anything at all.

  348. I can't obviously deny that.

  349. But are they getting it from the Bible?

  350. Look again with me.

  351. We're going to sort of jump a little bit.

  352. Look, remember all those bad things that happened.

  353. I don't know if you noticed something about it,

  354. but it's actually very significant

  355. to thinking about this whole question.

  356. Look at the first trumpet,

  357. and look at the second half of verse,

  358. look at verse seven.

  359. The first angel blew his trumpet

  360. and there followed hail and fire mixed with blood

  361. and these were thrown upon the earth

  362. and a third of the earth was burned up

  363. and a third of the trees were burned up

  364. and all green grass was burned up.

  365. But notice that.

  366. What does that mean?

  367. It means two-thirds of the earth wasn't burned

  368. and two-thirds of the tree wasn't.

  369. Look at the same thing in the next verse.

  370. Verse eight,

  371. the second angel blew his trumpet

  372. and something like a great mountain burning with fire

  373. was thrown into the sea

  374. and a third of the sea became blood,

  375. a third of the living creatures in the sea

  376. died and a third of the ships were destroyed.

  377. That means two-thirds weren't.

  378. And you'll see the same thing with the third.

  379. The third angel is that,

  380. we'll go down to verse 11,

  381. a third of the waters became wormwood

  382. and many people died from the water

  383. because it had been made bitter,

  384. but two-thirds wasn't.

  385. And it's the same with the light and the dark.

  386. And here's the thing.

  387. The first thing is,

  388. I guess I'd always like to,

  389. I like to push back at my secular friends

  390. who talk about the virtues of secularism

  391. and say, you know what,

  392. Stalin's forced famine in Ukraine,

  393. look at Cambodia,

  394. what happened when Pol Pot was there.

  395. Like, you can multiply examples that,

  396. you know,

  397. secularism,

  398. look at the whole history of the USSR,

  399. secularism does not guarantee action.

  400. And it's even hard to understand

  401. how within secularism,

  402. that rooted within secularism,

  403. are the roots

  404. to say that that part of secularism

  405. that doesn't act,

  406. it's wrong.

  407. In fact,

  408. often what happens

  409. when we see that that's wrong,

  410. it's borrowed language

  411. from the Christian faith.

  412. That in fact,

  413. the Christian faith,

  414. the Bible text here,

  415. gives us a bias towards action.

  416. Of not only having our hearts

  417. inclined to God

  418. during our suffering,

  419. but it asks us

  420. another fundamental deep question.

  421. Andrew, if you could put it on.

  422. Does my health

  423. and prosperity

  424. and safety

  425. deepen me

  426. in idolatry?

  427. Or does my health

  428. and prosperity

  429. and safety

  430. deepen me

  431. in habits

  432. which humbly

  433. and gratefully

  434. bring glory to God?

  435. Does my health

  436. and prosperity

  437. and safety

  438. deepen me

  439. in idolatry?

  440. And at the heart

  441. of idolatry

  442. whether it's an idolatry

  443. of Canada

  444. or of big oil

  445. or of socialism,

  446. but there's always

  447. rooted within that

  448. in making an idol

  449. of ourselves,

  450. seeing ourselves

  451. as gods,

  452. exalting ourselves.

  453. Or does my health

  454. and prosperity

  455. and safety

  456. deepen me

  457. in habits

  458. which humbly

  459. and gratefully

  460. bring glory to God?

  461. You know,

  462. I don't have time

  463. to do it,

  464. but if you're interested

  465. in the devotional thing,

  466. it would be very interesting

  467. to go back

  468. and read chapter 2 or 3

  469. of Revelation

  470. and read about

  471. the seven churches

  472. and you read

  473. those seven churches

  474. and you realize

  475. that all the things

  476. that are going on

  477. in the book,

  478. all the horrible things

  479. that are going on

  480. in the book,

  481. they all affect

  482. different churches

  483. differently.

  484. So it is here.

  485. You know,

  486. a few years ago

  487. there was that

  488. devastating event

  489. that happened in Haiti

  490. and it was very closely

  491. followed by a devastating

  492. effect in Japan.

  493. But in Japan,

  494. because of their

  495. technological prowess

  496. and their wealth,

  497. it was cleaned up

  498. very quickly.

  499. It was dealt,

  500. I mean,

  501. I'm not denying

  502. any of the death

  503. or the real suffering

  504. that happened,

  505. but it was dealt

  506. with far quicker

  507. whereas the results

  508. of the earthquake

  509. in Haiti

  510. are still lingering

  511. and going on

  512. and on and on

  513. and are unfixed

  514. and unrepaired.

  515. And just think

  516. for a second

  517. to ourselves,

  518. what would happen

  519. if some of these

  520. things happened

  521. to Canada?

  522. Let's say

  523. it was a third

  524. of the ocean.

  525. Well,

  526. the third of the ocean

  527. happened to all be

  528. around between

  529. India and China.

  530. Well,

  531. that's fine.

  532. It doesn't touch

  533. Halifax

  534. and Vancouver Island.

  535. It doesn't touch

  536. me going to Florida

  537. for a holiday.

  538. The ocean there

  539. is fine.

  540. And let's say

  541. the image

  542. of the fresh water

  543. happens to Canada,

  544. but it happens

  545. through the Great Lakes

  546. and the St. Lawrence

  547. and a river

  548. that flows

  549. into Hudson Bay.

  550. And then we can say,

  551. well,

  552. it sucks to live

  553. in Toronto

  554. and Montreal,

  555. but we're fine.

  556. In fact,

  557. not only would

  558. we be fine

  559. if the water

  560. in the Great Lakes

  561. turned so poisonous

  562. that they couldn't

  563. drink,

  564. they couldn't do

  565. anything,

  566. it was going to

  567. affect Toronto

  568. and Montreal.

  569. In fact,

  570. we would prosper.

  571. People from Toronto,

  572. businesses would move

  573. from there

  574. to places like Ottawa.

  575. My housing value

  576. might double

  577. in a year.

  578. I could be richer.

  579. You see,

  580. if you're part

  581. of the two-thirds

  582. not touched

  583. by it,

  584. what's going

  585. on with you?

  586. What's going

  587. on with us?

  588. If this was

  589. happening all

  590. over the world

  591. and it would be

  592. devastating in a place

  593. like the Sudan,

  594. it might be

  595. unbelievably devastating

  596. in a country

  597. like Kenya,

  598. but even if it

  599. happened to a third

  600. of the fresh water

  601. in Canada,

  602. we have lots

  603. of fresh water

  604. and we would be

  605. able to organize

  606. tankers and pipelines

  607. and within no time

  608. there'd be extra water

  609. from other sources

  610. in places like Toronto

  611. and places like Montreal

  612. and the population

  613. would relocate

  614. and it would be

  615. a bit farther

  616. from the water

  617. and cities like Ottawa

  618. would prosper

  619. and those of you

  620. who have businesses

  621. here,

  622. own houses here

  623. and if you were

  624. a really smart

  625. business person

  626. and you saw it happen,

  627. you might quickly

  628. buy up a few

  629. other properties

  630. knowing that your

  631. property values

  632. are going to go

  633. way up

  634. and you're going

  635. to make a killing.

  636. And you might

  637. or might not

  638. spend any time,

  639. I might or might

  640. not spend any time

  641. thinking about

  642. what's happening

  643. in Kenya

  644. and the Sudan

  645. or even what's

  646. happening in Toronto.

  647. That in fact,

  648. my safety,

  649. health and prosperity

  650. could just deepen me

  651. in the idolatry

  652. of capitalism

  653. or central planning

  654. or of my own health,

  655. of the fact

  656. that I am like

  657. a god.

  658. But is that

  659. what the Bible,

  660. is that what

  661. all this talk

  662. about woe

  663. and judgment,

  664. is that what

  665. the text is meaning

  666. for those of us

  667. who are part

  668. of the two-thirds?

  669. Surely,

  670. it's a call

  671. to us.

  672. Surely,

  673. it's a call

  674. to me

  675. and a call

  676. to you.

  677. Surely,

  678. that's at the

  679. heart of this text

  680. that we should

  681. not just walk

  682. about with

  683. even harder

  684. hearts

  685. at the problems

  686. that befall

  687. people,

  688. but that God

  689. wants us

  690. to incline

  691. our hearts

  692. to Him

  693. and in the face

  694. of suffering

  695. say,

  696. Father,

  697. have mercy

  698. on those

  699. who are suffering

  700. and Father,

  701. have mercy

  702. on me.

  703. Incline my heart

  704. to you.

  705. And Father,

  706. as I enjoy

  707. the blessing

  708. at this time

  709. of great trouble

  710. on the planet,

  711. my health

  712. and my prosperity

  713. and my safety,

  714. Father,

  715. deepen in me

  716. habits

  717. which humbly

  718. and gratefully

  719. bring glory

  720. to God.

  721. Some of those habits

  722. will be habits

  723. of compassion

  724. and generosity

  725. and prayer

  726. and ascending.

  727. You see,

  728. friends,

  729. this is one of those,

  730. if you're a guest here,

  731. you can understand,

  732. this is part of why

  733. the Bible talks

  734. about tithing,

  735. for instance.

  736. Like,

  737. how is it

  738. when we're prosperous

  739. and every one of us

  740. in this room,

  741. let me tell you,

  742. I was in Nairobi

  743. a few months ago

  744. and I'm not trying

  745. to denigrate

  746. any poor person

  747. here in Ottawa,

  748. I'm not trying

  749. to denigrate

  750. how hard it is,

  751. if you're here

  752. this morning

  753. you're very poor,

  754. I am not trying

  755. to denigrate

  756. your experience,

  757. but let me tell you,

  758. compared to Kenya,

  759. there are no poor

  760. people in Ottawa.

  761. I mean,

  762. compared to what

  763. you can see

  764. on the city streets

  765. in a place

  766. like Kenya,

  767. there is no poverty

  768. compared to that.

  769. And even a poor

  770. person is rich

  771. compared to the

  772. real poverty,

  773. the unbelievable

  774. poverty in certain

  775. parts of the world.

  776. And so you see,

  777. how is it?

  778. Okay,

  779. so I,

  780. if God wants,

  781. if God is calling me

  782. not to have my heart

  783. get hardened

  784. and hardened

  785. in idolatry

  786. and deepened

  787. in idolatry,

  788. if God is calling me

  789. that while I enjoy

  790. prosperity and safety

  791. and physical health

  792. and strength

  793. that I am to somehow

  794. develop habits

  795. that bring glory

  796. to God

  797. and have me trust

  798. in Him

  799. and hope in Him,

  800. and well,

  801. what might that look like?

  802. And for some of us,

  803. it might be that God

  804. calls us to be

  805. a type of a missionary

  806. or a type of pastor

  807. that means that we give up

  808. 100% of what we have.

  809. But for most of us,

  810. it might just mean 10%.

  811. 10% gratefully received.

  812. My kids,

  813. many of you might

  814. don't remember this,

  815. but about five

  816. or six years ago,

  817. seven years ago,

  818. a Kuro,

  819. a priest from Nigeria

  820. was here,

  821. and just before he left

  822. to go back to Nigeria,

  823. I let him do

  824. a Nigerian service

  825. in Canada.

  826. And I am dancing

  827. challenge,

  828. I can't dance

  829. to save my life.

  830. And he wanted us

  831. to do the offering

  832. the Nigerian way,

  833. which means that we

  834. sang a praise song

  835. and everybody danced

  836. down the central aisle

  837. to put money

  838. in the plate.

  839. And he announced

  840. to everybody

  841. that George

  842. would leave the way.

  843. And I still have

  844. fallen memories

  845. of Kendra

  846. and this guy

  847. who doesn't go

  848. to our church anymore

  849. because he moved,

  850. his name's Guy.

  851. And they obviously

  852. saw my huge distress.

  853. And so they came

  854. and linked arms

  855. with me

  856. and helped,

  857. they did all the dancing,

  858. I sort of did this,

  859. like Frankenstein

  860. walking down the aisle.

  861. But they actually

  862. danced

  863. and sort of covered

  864. for me

  865. and we went down

  866. the aisle.

  867. And you see,

  868. that type of those

  869. habits of financial

  870. sacrifice,

  871. that's why disciplines

  872. like tithing

  873. are in the Bible.

  874. But then some of you

  875. might say,

  876. George,

  877. aha,

  878. aha,

  879. aha,

  880. I knew you were

  881. going to get

  882. to these type

  883. of religious rules,

  884. these types of things

  885. that I just don't like

  886. about the Christian faith.

  887. And while the rest

  888. of it's very challenging,

  889. you're starting to touch

  890. on something

  891. which is very,

  892. very,

  893. very dangerous.

  894. Is it just,

  895. okay,

  896. it's just religion,

  897. George,

  898. and you know,

  899. religion is all

  900. about paying off God.

  901. It's about going

  902. through certain types

  903. of motions

  904. to pay off God.

  905. And that's why

  906. I choose to spend

  907. my Sunday mornings

  908. not paying off God,

  909. but I have a nice

  910. sleep in,

  911. I go to a Starbucks,

  912. I have a nice latte,

  913. I read the paper,

  914. I have some fun.

  915. Like,

  916. I'm not into doing

  917. all these religious

  918. things to pay off God.

  919. Isn't that what

  920. you're talking about?

  921. Not at all.

  922. Let's look at the part

  923. of the Bible here

  924. which I hadn't read.

  925. Let's look at the first

  926. five verses.

  927. In closing,

  928. I see my time is up

  929. so we'll have to do it

  930. very quick.

  931. Look at Revelation

    Revelation 8:1–5

  932. chapter 8 verses 1 to 5

  933. and I ask yourself

  934. two things.

  935. First of all,

  936. what are they going

  937. to be looking at

  938. during the half hour

  939. of silence

  940. and what's going on

  941. in the altar?

  942. When the Lamb

  943. opened the seventh seal,

  944. there was silence

  945. in heaven for about

  946. half an hour.

  947. Then I saw

  948. the seven angels

  949. who stand before God

  950. and seven trumpets

  951. were given to them

  952. and another angel

  953. came and stood

  954. at the altar

  955. with a golden censer

  956. and he was given

  957. much incense

  958. to offer

  959. with the prayers

  960. of all the saints

  961. on the golden altar

  962. before the throne

  963. and the smoke

  964. of the incense

  965. with the prayers

  966. of the saints

  967. rose before God

  968. from the hand

  969. of the angel.

  970. Then the angel

  971. took the censer

  972. and filled it with fire

  973. from the altar

  974. and threw it on the earth

  975. and there were peals

  976. of thunder,

  977. rumblings,

  978. flashes of lightning

  979. and an earthquake.

  980. The first six seals

  981. have come.

  982. The seventh,

  983. the chapter

  984. which we read

  985. just before that

  986. is sort of an interlude

  987. where we look

  988. at the saints

  989. and at the end

  990. of that interlude

  991. we have this profound

  992. hymn of praise

  993. and thanksgiving

  994. to the lamb

  995. who was slain

  996. for what he does

  997. for his people,

  998. how he'll wipe away

  999. every tear,

  1000. he'll cover us

  1001. with his presence.

  1002. It's a beautiful,

  1003. beautiful hymn of praise

  1004. to what the lamb

  1005. does for those

  1006. who put their faith

  1007. and trust in him

  1008. and then we see

  1009. the lamb

  1010. who was slain.

1011. And for half an hour

  1012. all of heaven

  1013. is completely silent

  1014. because they look

  1015. at Jesus,

  1016. the lamb

  1017. who was slain.

1018. And then when it comes

  1019. time for the altar

  1020. there's no sacrificial

  1021. animal on the altar.

  1022. The altar

  1023. is empty.

  1024. Why is it empty?

  1025. Because the lamb

  1026. who was slain,

  1027. the one

  1028. for all

  1029. sacrifice,

  1030. the once for all

  1031. lamb of God

1032. that came to take away

1033. the sin of the world,

  1034. that sacrifice

  1035. has already been made

  1036. on Calvary.

  1037. And that's why

  1038. there is no animal

  1039. on the altar

  1040. to be sacrificed.

  1041. There's nothing

  1042. on the altar

  1043. to be sacrificed.

1044. And so for the first

  1045. half hour

  1046. they just all look

  1047. at the lamb

1048. and then when it comes

  1049. to the altar

  1050. the altar is empty.

  1051. See here's what

1052. the Bible is teaching us

  1053. before it goes into

  1054. this teaching on suffering.

  1055. It goes into this

  1056. teaching on suffering

  1057. knowing that in our

  1058. pagan hearts

  1059. in our pagan hearts

  1060. we see always

  1061. two options.

  1062. And one option

1063. is to thumb our nose

  1064. at God

  1065. and live an

  1066. irreligious,

  1067. unspiritual,

  1068. materialistic,

  1069. secular life.

  1070. And the other option

1071. is to do a lot

  1072. of that stuff

  1073. but tip God

  1074. by little sacrifices.

  1075. A few dollars

  1076. in the plate

  1077. an appearance

  1078. at church

  1079. periodically

  1080. or whatever it is

  1081. to learn a mantra

1082. to learn how to do

  1083. Tai Chi

1084. to learn how to do this

  1085. a little sacrifice

  1086. that we offer

  1087. to pay off God.

  1088. But what the text

  1089. is saying

1090. when it's going to be

  1091. calling us

  1092. and asking us

  1093. whether suffering

  1094. will incline our hearts

  1095. to Him

  1096. or away from Him

1097. or how we will use

  1098. our prosperity

  1099. and health

1100. all the way through it

  1101. it sets the stage

  1102. for that

  1103. by first suggesting this

1104. if you could put it up

  1105. Andrew.

  1106. God is not waiting

  1107. for me to make

  1108. a sacrifice.

  1109. He is waiting

  1110. for me to humbly

  1111. turn to Him

  1112. and be gripped

1113. by the once for all

  1114. sacrifice made

  1115. by Jesus.

  1116. In the suffering

  1117. in the prosperity

  1118. in the pauses

  1119. between

  1120. in the warning

  1121. in all of that

  1122. God's desire

  1123. is not that I

  1124. figure out

  1125. some way

  1126. to thumb my nose

  1127. at Him

  1128. or some way

  1129. to make a sacrifice

  1130. a religious act

1131. that will pay Him off.

  1132. He wants me

  1133. to join

  1134. with the saints

  1135. in heaven

  1136. and all the angels

  1137. and archangels

  1138. and not think

  1139. that I can make

  1140. a sacrifice

  1141. He is waiting

  1142. for me to humbly

  1143. turn to Him

  1144. and be gripped

  1145. by the once

  1146. for all

  1147. sacrifice

  1148. made

  1149. by Jesus.

  1150. God's wrath

  1151. that I deserved

  1152. on Him.

  1153. You see

  1154. as we

  1155. look upon

  1156. the once for all

  1157. sacrifice

  1158. made by Jesus

  1159. as that

  1160. grips us

  1161. as it grips us

  1162. it will push us

  1163. into new life.

  1164. It will shape us

  1165. in terms of

  1166. an understanding

  1167. of a need

  1168. for compassion

  1169. in new life.

  1170. The vision

  1171. that it's

  1172. the end

  1173. of all things

  1174. will draw us

  1175. to new life

  1176. and new habits.

  1177. And the once

  1178. for all

  1179. nature of it

  1180. and the historical

  1181. nature of it

  1182. grounds us.

  1183. What about you?

  1184. What about you?

  1185. Is this text

  1186. hardening your heart

  1187. or softening it?

  1188. Is it

  1189. hardening you

  1190. towards God

  1191. or softening

  1192. you and me

  1193. towards God?

  1194. Let's stand.

  1195. Father,

  1196. it's hard for us

  1197. to admit

  1198. that there is

  1199. a confusion

  1200. and lack of clarity

  1201. and a selfishness

  1202. and a self-centeredness

  1203. and an idolatry

  1204. within us

  1205. that makes

  1206. your word

  1207. unclear

  1208. that confuses us

  1209. about what

  1210. your word

  1211. talks about.

  1212. We thank you,

  1213. Father,

  1214. for your word.

  1215. We thank you,

  1216. Father,

  1217. for the once

  1218. for all sacrifice

  1219. of your Son

  1220. upon the cross.

  1221. We ask,

  1222. Father,

  1223. that in your mercy

  1224. and in your kindness

  1225. your Holy Spirit

  1226. would be deeply

  1227. poured out

  1228. within me,

  1229. within each one

  1230. who is here.

  1231. we ask,

  1232. Father,

  1233. in your mercy

  1234. and your kindness

  1235. that your Holy Spirit

  1236. would be deeply

  1237. poured out upon us

  1238. to soften our heart

  1239. towards you,

  1240. to incline our hearts

  1241. and minds

  1242. and wills

  1243. towards you,

  1244. to turn our eyes

  1245. to the once

  1246. for all sacrifice

  1247. of Jesus

  1248. upon the cross

  1249. so that as we

  1250. think upon that,

  1251. that it will

  1252. so grip us

  1253. to push us

  1254. into new life,

  1255. so grip us

  1256. to draw us

  1257. into new life,

  1258. so grip us

  1259. to shape us

  1260. in new life,

  1261. and so grip us

  1262. to ground us

  1263. and be the basis

  1264. for all new life

  1265. that we enter into.

  1266. And, Father,

  1267. it is the cry

  1268. of our hearts

  1269. that your Holy Spirit

  1270. would so turn

  1271. our eyes

  1272. towards your Son.

  1273. And this we ask

1274. in the name of Jesus,

  1275. your Son,

  1276. and our Savior.

  1277. Amen.

  1278. Amen.
