  1. I'd like you to open your Bibles again, the book of Nehemiah chapter 8 on page 492, and

    Nehemiah 8 chapter mention

  2. I would like to draw your attention particularly to words which we find at the end of verse

  3. 3, the last sentence of that verse, and all the people listened attentively to the book

  4. of the law.

  5. So, the scene that is presented to us here in this chapter is of life in Jerusalem in

  6. the mid-fifth century before Christ.

  7. And what we have recorded for us in this chapter is an example of a congregation engaging with

  8. the Bible as it is read in public.

  9. The book of the law here is the Torah, or the five books of Moses, the Genesis, Exodus,

  10. Leviticus, and Numbers.

  11. And what we have here is an example of reading scripture publicly out loud.

  12. Now, reading scripture when we gather together to worship is very important.

  13. Paul wrote to Timothy, a young pastor in the early church in Ephesus, and he said, devote

  14. yourself to the public reading of scripture as well as to preaching and to teaching.

  15. And so, an important element in any act of worship is the public reading of scripture.

  16. Now, sometimes, occasionally, I have attended churches where the only scripture that is read

  17. is the text on which the preacher is going to focus.

  18. But in our tradition, our Presbyterian Reformed tradition, here in Scotland and throughout other

  19. countries in the world, the reading of scripture has a place in its own right in the service.

  20. And it's very important that we preserve that.

  21. And we see that the pattern for that in this chapter.

  22. Now, Ezra ensured that the scripture was not only read, but that it was explained.

  23. We read that the Levites read from the book of the law of God, making it clear and giving

  24. the meaning so that the people understood in verse 8.

  25. So, we find Ezra was helped by the Levites.

  26. There was a large number of people present.

  27. They were gathered in the open air.

  28. And the service went on for six hours, which is slightly longer than we're accustomed to

  29. here in Buclue.

  30. Probably, the scriptures would have been read in sections.

  31. And between the scripture readings, the 13 Levites present, named in verse 7, would explain

  32. the meaning to the people.

  33. Perhaps the people would have been gathered in smaller groups.

  34. So, let's for a moment try to imagine the scene that is presented to us here.

  35. This was an important event.

  36. It's an example of a congregation engaging with scripture.

  37. Now, one of the problems that the churches in the Western world face is that Christians

  38. are not engaging with the Bible as they used to.

  39. And in contrast with the church, the churches in Africa, the churches in Asia, the churches

  40. in Europe and in North America, we don't really take as much interest in the scriptures in

  41. terms of reading them privately and personally.

  42. Remember the first time I went to Ghana many years ago, the person who greeted me told me

  43. that he was brought up on a phrase which said, NBNB.

  44. And I said, what does NBNB mean?

  45. He said, no Bible, no breakfast.

  46. And there's a kind of biblical anorexia which is blighting the churches here in the Western

  47. world.

  48. And so, quite a considerable amount of research has been done into why Christians are not

  49. regularly reading and meditating scripture.

  50. And that research has been helpful.

  51. But as far as I'm aware, very little of any research has been done in how we engage with

  52. the Bible as we gather together.

  53. A lot of research has been done of what we do as individuals, what we do when we close the

  54. door, when we're in our homes.

  55. But how do we interact with the public reading of scripture, the explanation of scripture, as

  56. we gather together here.

  57. It's difficult to know, really, how we do that.

  58. But I think Ezra will help us to discover, because what we find here is that there are

  59. six key features of this public reading of scripture.

  60. So Ezra provides us with a template which will help us to evaluate how we respond today and

  61. each Sunday to the reading and preaching of scripture in public worship.

  62. Now the scene that is presented to us here is described in verse 3 in summary and then

  63. in detail in verses 4 to 12.

  64. And in this description we find Ezra's open-air congregation interacting with the Word of God

  65. to its public reading and exposition in six key ways.

  66. And this event, I believe, is recorded in the Bible in order to challenge us to examine the

  67. way in which we are responding to God's Word this morning and every time we gather here in

  68. church.

  69. As we now go on to note briefly the six key features of Ezra's congregation, let's evaluate

  70. whether here today we are reflecting them.

  71. Let's examine each of these in turn.

  72. The first is that we find that Ezra's congregation was in step.

  73. The phrase all the people occurs ten times in twelve verses, in the first twelve verses of this chapter.

  74. And so we find the congregation standing before God's Word as a community.

  75. All the people were together.

  76. They were not a series of individuals.

  77. They were a community.

  78. They were anticipating Paul's metaphor of the church as a body in which each member of the body interacts with the others.

  79. So that as we gather here this morning, God is calling us not simply to come as individuals.

  80. He's calling us to come as a family.

  81. He's calling us to come as a body.

  82. He's calling us to be concerned not only about what we think and how we react,

  83. but how those around us are responding to God's Word.

  84. So that we pray not only for ourselves, but we pray for them as well.

  85. And so the first question we need to ask ourselves this morning,

  86. are we conscious of being here as a body of people?

  87. Or are we simply here as a bunch of individuals?

  88. There's a lot of individualism in our society.

  89. And perhaps we need to counteract that

  90. by becoming much, much more conscious of the communal dimension of spiritual worship.

  91. God has called us to worship together

  92. as different instruments in an orchestra.

  93. They all blend together.

  94. And there's a sense in which we are being called to worship the Lord

  95. like the musicians in an orchestra blend together.

  96. So we need to be in step with one another.

  97. The second feature is that Ezra's congregation responded on cue to the call to worship.

  98. Read at the beginning of verse 6 that Ezra praised the Lord, the great God.

  99. Now in effect, that was a call to worship.

  100. Similar to the verses that James reads before,

  101. calling us to worship the Lord each week.

  102. Or the verse we used this morning from Psalm 100.

  103. Sing to the Lord all the earth.

  104. Worship the Lord with gladness.

  105. Come before him with joyful songs.

  106. Now we find that not only did Ezra praise the Lord

  107. as the great God,

  108. but immediately the people responded and said,

  109. Amen, Amen.

  110. They were ready to go.

  111. They wanted to be involved.

  112. They wanted to respond.

  113. The word Amen is repeated for emphasis

  114. to show just how keen the congregation was.

  115. And this is a reminder that

  116. we are all active partners in the worship of God.

  117. It's not just that the person who's leading the worship

  118. is active and the rest of the people are passive.

  119. God is calling us all to be active,

  120. to be participants rather than spectators in the house of God.

  121. He's calling us to say our Amen.

  122. We don't need to say it out loud.

  123. You can if you wish.

  124. But we should be saying that in our heart.

  125. Amen really comes from the Hebrew root to believe.

  126. And it's an expression of faith.

  127. And so as soon as Ezra said the equivalent of let us worship God,

  128. the people say Amen, Amen.

  129. They want to get involved.

  130. They come in on cue.

  131. And it's so important that we do that.

  132. Someone who is perhaps reading the news

  133. or doing a program on video

  134. will find symbols such as we see on the screen at the moment.

  135. And when he or she see that,

  136. they've got to be ready to go.

  137. They've got to come in.

  138. And that's important.

  139. That's so important before we come to church

  140. that we prepare, that we come prepared

  141. and that we're ready to jump in, as it were,

  142. ready to participate,

  143. ready to say our Amen.

  144. Amen.

  145. So again, we need to ask ourselves this question.

  146. How keen are we to become active participants

  147. in the service from the very beginning?

  148. And so often we tend to think of the beginning of the service

  149. as preliminaries.

  150. But in a sense, perhaps they are.

  151. But the service is important from the very beginning,

  152. from the moment that the preacher says,

  153. let us worship God,

  154. or quotes a verse calling us to worship.

  155. We are called to participate.

  156. We're called to respond.

  157. We're called to get involved.

  158. The third feature of Ezra's congregation

  159. is that we find it was all ears.

  160. We read in verse 3,

  161. in the second part of the verse,

  162. all the people listened attentively

  163. to the book of the law.

  164. They were eager to hear the reading

  165. and to understand what it means

  166. and implies for them.

  167. This explanation was given

  168. not only to the people,

  169. but also to those

  170. who were able to understand that as children.

  171. And they were taking,

  172. they were in part of this open air service.

  173. The people wanted to understand

  174. what the reading meant

  175. and what it implied for their lives.

  176. Remember how Jesus tells us

  177. that we need to consider carefully

  178. how we listen,

  179. how we hear.

  180. And that's a word,

  181. surely for us today.

  182. It's so easy for us to drop off to sleep,

  183. metaphorically at least.

  184. It's so easy for us to lose attention.

  185. We need to listen carefully

  186. because God is speaking.

  187. God is speaking when the scriptures are read

  188. and when they're expanded.

  189. But we hear as we listen.

  190. If we're not listening,

  191. we won't hear.

  192. Just as in this atmosphere of this church

  193. there are many radio signals

  194. passing at the moment

  195. that we're not receiving

  196. because we don't have a receiver.

  197. Or we have a receiver,

  198. it's not switched on.

  199. And it's like that.

  200. God is speaking

  201. as his word is proclaimed,

  202. as his word is read and proclaimed.

  203. And we need to be ready to receive it.

  204. We need to be switched on,

  205. as it were,

  206. and ask God to give us that faith

  207. which will say,

  208. yes, Lord, speak,

  209. for your servant is listening.

  210. So the church is an acoustic community

  211. and a community that listens,

  212. that hears the word of God.

  213. The reformers said that

  214. the great mark of the church

  215. was not only the preaching of God's word

  216. but the hearing of God's word.

  217. And so for a church to be the church,

  218. not only must the gospel be preached,

  219. it must also be heard.

  220. And it's so important that those of us

  221. who spend most of the time

  222. in church in the pews,

  223. I now do,

  224. that we are switched on,

  225. that we're listening

  226. to what God is saying to us.

  227. The fourth feature of Ezra's congregation

  228. is that they are awestruck

  229. by the Lord's presence

  230. in their midst.

  231. We read in verse 6

  232. that after responding with their amens,

  233. they bowed down and worshipped the Lord

  234. with their faces to the ground.

  235. They became conscious

  236. that God was present with them,

  237. that God was in their midst.

  238. As in Corinth,

  239. centuries later,

  240. any stranger

  241. entering the square

  242. before the water gate

  243. would feel compelled

  244. to explain,

  245. to exclaim,

  246. as Paul said,

  247. God is really

  248. among you.

  249. And our great desire

  250. as we come to worship God

  251. is that God

  252. would reveal himself

  253. to us

  254. and that we would become conscious

  255. of the presence of God.

  256. This church is the house of God.

  257. Only when God's word

  258. is being read and proclaimed

  259. and when his people are at prayer

  260. that it becomes the house of God

  261. and we are here as God's guests

  262. and he wants us to hear

  263. what he is saying to us.

  264. And as we hear him,

  265. we are struck

  266. by his majesty,

  267. by his greatness,

  268. by his

  269. holiness.

  270. And again,

  271. we ask ourselves

  272. this question

  273. as we come to church,

  274. do we ask and expect

  275. to have a sense,

  276. to experience a sense

  277. of God's

  278. presence?

  279. In church,

  280. the

  281. screen, as it were,

  282. we call it a screen

  283. between time and eternity

  284. is very thin.

  285. And here in the house

  286. of God,

  287. as God's word

  288. is read and expanded,

  289. we can become conscious

  290. in a unique way

  291. of the eternal reality

  292. that surrounds us.

  293. We live not only

  294. in a universe

  295. of space and time,

  296. we live in an eternal universe

  297. that is in,

  298. with,

  299. and under

  300. our universe

  301. of space and time.

  302. And it's so important

  303. that we sense

  304. that spiritual universe,

  305. that we sense

  306. the presence

  307. of God,

  308. that we sense

  309. that spiritual

  310. reality

  311. of eternity.

  312. The fifth

  313. feature

  314. of

  315. Ezra's

  316. congregation

  317. was that their

  318. heartstrings

  319. are pulled.

  320. We find

  321. that the people

  322. respond

  323. emotionally.

  324. They weep,

  325. first of all,

  326. at their failure

  327. to meet the high

  328. standards of the

  329. scripture they're

  330. hearing,

  331. in verse 9.

  332. But then

  333. lamentation turns

  334. into joy

  335. when Nehemiah

  336. reminds them

  337. that the Torah

  338. communicates grace

  339. as well as law.

  340. Let's read again

  341. verses 11

  342. and 12.

  343. The Levites

  344. calmed all the

  345. people saying,

  346. Be still,

  347. for this is a

  348. sacred day.

  349. Do not grieve.

  350. Then all the

  351. people went away

  352. to eat and to

  353. drink,

  354. to send portions

  355. of food and to

  356. celebrate with

  357. great joy,

  358. because they now

  359. understood the

  360. words that had

  361. been made known

  362. to them.

  363. And so,

  364. as God's word

  365. was made known

  366. to them,

  367. their first

  368. reaction is

  369. to weep,

  370. because they're

  371. ashamed,

  372. because they

  373. become conscious

  374. that they failed

  375. to meet the

  376. high standards

  377. of God's law

  378. and of God's

  379. word.

  380. But then

  381. Nehemiah and

  382. Ezra remind

  383. them that the

  384. Torah mentioned

  385. God's grace and

  386. God's love and

  387. God's mercy.

  388. And so their

  389. weeping turns

  390. to joy.

  391. They learn to

  392. rejoice in the

  393. goodness and

  394. grace of God.

  395. When we worship

  396. God, when we

  397. come to church,

  398. it's very easy

  399. for us to put

  400. up our

  401. sort of

  402. psychological

  403. defenses,

  404. and we have

  405. a barrier

  406. between, you

  407. know, what

  408. is being read,

  409. what is being

  410. said, what

  411. is being sung,

  412. and our

  413. inner being.

  414. But the

  415. people in

  416. Ezra's

  417. congregation

  418. obviously

  419. lowered that

  420. barrier.

  421. And they were

  422. willing to allow

  423. God's word to

  424. impact their

  425. emotions, to

  426. impact the

  427. deepest part

  428. of their

  429. lives, to

  430. stir them, to

  431. pierce their

  432. conscience, and

  433. to rouse the

  434. heart.

  435. Now, sometimes

  436. we can be

  437. rather suspicious

  438. of emotion, but

  439. the Psalms are

  440. full of emotion.

  441. And emotion is

  442. an element, an

  443. important element

  444. in worship.

  445. It's not the only

  446. element, as we

  447. shall see, but it

  448. is an important

  449. element.

  450. And it's so

  451. important that we

  452. are willing to

  453. allow God's

  454. word to

  455. penetrate right

  456. into the depths

  457. of our

  458. consciousness.

  459. And finally, the

  460. sixth feature of

  461. Ezra's

  462. congregation is

  463. that it gets

  464. in sync with

  465. God's will,

  466. because they

  467. are moved to

  468. obey the

  469. scripture in

  470. their lifestyle.

  471. We see this in

  472. the second part of

  473. the chapter in

  474. verse 13 onwards.

  475. They hear in

  476. the word that

  477. the Feast of

  478. Booths or the

  479. Feast of

  480. Tabernacles has

  481. to be celebrated

  482. at that time,

  483. and they're

  484. willing to do

  485. it.

  486. They're willing

  487. to take part in

  488. this festival, an

  489. annual festival in

  490. the Jewish

  491. religious year,

  492. when the people

  493. would live for

  494. one week in the

  495. year in temporary

  496. shelters made

  497. from tree branches.

  498. This was a

  499. reminder of the

  500. 40 years pilgrimage

  501. of their

  502. ancestors in the

  503. wilderness following

  504. the Exodus from

  505. Egypt.

  506. And we find here

  507. that they are

  508. moved to obey

  509. this command in

  510. verses 13 to

  511. 18.

  512. And so not

  513. only were their

  514. emotions impacted,

  515. but their wills

  516. were moved.

  517. And they took

  518. decisions.

  519. And they did

  520. things differently.

  521. It wasn't just

  522. that they felt

  523. different, but

  524. they behaved

  525. differently.

  526. And that is the

  527. way that God's

  528. word works.

  529. It impacts not

  530. only our emotions,

  531. important as these

  532. are, but even

  533. more important is

  534. that it would

  535. impact our will

  536. and our

  537. behaviors, and

  538. that we would

  539. become doers as

  540. well as hearers

  541. of God's word.

  542. His word, as the

  543. psalmist says in

  544. Psalm 119, is a

  545. lamp to guide us

  546. a delight for

  547. our path.

  548. So we need to

  549. ask ourselves this

  550. question.

  551. When we leave

  552. this service or

  553. any other service,

  554. what have we been

  555. persuaded to do

  556. differently that we

  557. wouldn't have done

  558. otherwise?

  559. That's a hard

  560. question.

  561. It's a question we

  562. need to ask.

  563. Because God's word

  564. impacts our

  565. behavior.

  566. It impacts how

  567. we live.

  568. And we need to

  569. ask ourselves that

  570. question.

  571. What am I going to

  572. do differently as

  573. a result of hearing

  574. what God has said

  575. to me today?

  576. So we ask

  577. ourselves the

  578. question, has

  579. today's service or

  580. the service of any

  581. Sunday persuaded

  582. us to do

  583. anything differently

  584. or to do

  585. something you

  586. otherwise might

  587. not have done?

  588. So these six

  589. features of a

  590. a congregation

  591. interacting, engaging

  592. with the word of

  593. God.

  594. And I believe that

  595. God has caused

  596. this incident to

  597. be recorded in

  598. order that we

  599. might learn from

  600. it.

  601. It's not simply

  602. there as a

  603. historical piece,

  604. it's there to

  605. guide us.

  606. Paul tells us that

  607. the scriptures were

  608. given to help us

  609. and to encourage us

  610. and to give us

  611. hope.

  612. And so we might

  613. ask ourselves this

  614. question, have we

  615. been encouraged as

  616. we've read God's

  617. word together today?

  618. So we need to ask

  619. ourselves the

  620. question, how are we

  621. responding?

  622. Are we as a

  623. congregation reflecting

  624. the six features of

  625. Ezra's congregation?

  626. Are we conscious of

  627. being in step with

  628. others around us?

  629. Are we concerned

  630. for our neighbor,

  631. for the person

  632. sitting beside us

  633. or in front of us

  634. or behind us?

  635. Are we concerned

  636. for them as well as

  637. for as much as for

  638. ourselves?

  639. Are we at the

  640. beginning of each

  641. service ready to go?

  642. Are we ready to

  643. come in on cue?

  644. Are we willing to

  645. say our heartfelt

  646. Amen?

  647. Are we all ears?

  648. Are we listening

  649. attentively to what

  650. God is saying?

  651. Are we all struck

  652. by the glory of God?

  653. By a sense of his

  654. greatness and how

  655. majestic and how

  656. wonderful he is that

  657. we bow down before

  658. him and acknowledge

  659. him as God.

  660. And have our

  661. heartstrings been

  662. pulled by being

  663. stirred to weep for

  664. our sins and to

  665. rejoice in God's

  666. wonderful grace?

  667. So will we leave

  668. this service with

  669. our lives more in

  670. sync with God's

  671. will and willing to

  672. be doers as well as

  673. hearers of the word?

  674. from...

  675. Thank you.

  676. Let's try to

  677. keep it

  678. forward.
