  1. The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his bondservants,

  2. the things which must soon take place.

  3. He sent and communicated it by his angel to his bondservant John,

  4. who testified to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ,

  5. even to all that he saw.

  6. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy

  7. and heed the things which are written in it, for the time is near.

  8. To the angel of the church in Ephesus write,

  9. the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand,

  10. the one who walks among the seven golden lampstands, says this,

  11. I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance,

  12. and that you cannot tolerate evil men.

  13. And you put to the test those who call themselves apostles,

  14. and they are not, and you found them to be false.

  15. And you have perseverance and have endured for my name's sake and have not grown weary.

  16. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

  17. Therefore remember from where you have fallen,

  18. and repent and do the deeds you did at first,

  19. or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place,

  20. unless you repent.

  21. Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans,

  22. which I also hate.

  23. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  24. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life,

  25. which is in the paradise of God.

  26. And this is the reading of God's Word.

  27. Okay, so we, if you're joining us for the first time, you're like,

  28. okay, I don't know what I got into with that scripture reading there.

  29. Oh, by the way, we had an amazing, amazing lunch afterwards

  30. with the church last Sunday for the fourth anniversary.

  31. And Marcus, Marcus Tandra, Jeffrey, so Marcus, come here, buddy.

  32. So Marcus gave me this, we had this crossword puzzle we were trying to work out,

  33. and Marcus and I, we could not find out cupcake, right?

  34. And you came here and you said, I don't think that it's on there.

  35. Your wife probably just did his trick.

  36. So I found it, it's right there.

  37. See that?

  38. Cupcake is backwards.

  39. Okay, it took me a while.

  40. I was like, oh, no, it's on here somewhere.

  41. Hey, you know, we are, hey, we had a great time last Sunday.

  42. Today, we are looking at a passage in a book that I heard often taught,

  43. and I was always kind of, man, scared,

  44. because the pastors I heard teach this book,

  45. they got up here and they said, let me tell you how it's going to happen.

  46. This is what it's going to look like,

  47. and this is what the end of times are going to be like.

  48. And I sat there as a young Christian, just in awe, in fear,

  49. and then as a young pastor and as a seminary student, in awe and fear,

  50. wondering if I would ever have the confidence to say,

  51. this is how it's going to happen, and you can bet on it for sure.

  52. And I can tell you that I don't.

  53. There's about four different interpretations for the Scripture,

  54. and God-fearing people who love Christ throughout the 2,000 years

  55. have interpreted some of these passages in many, many different ways.

  56. Some of us, when we come to the Book of Revelation,

  57. I don't know if you've watched TV lately,

  58. but there are some significant shows on TV right now about end times

  59. and what happens when people get taken up and some people are left over.

  60. And there's like four or five major shows,

  61. and it seems like the secular world is very fascinated with this idea

  62. of whether it's zombies that survive and we're trying to live,

  63. but they're very fascinated with this idea of apocalypse and the end of times.

  64. And we want to look at this passage, we're going to look at just chapters 2 and 3 to begin with.

  65. And in the book, some of your Bibles will probably say,

  66. they call it the apocalypse of Jesus Christ.

  67. Apocalypse means the end time.

  68. And again, sometimes as Christians, we think too, too much of this.

  69. We become embroiled in this idea of end times,

  70. and it consumes all of our life.

  71. Joe Littlepache.

  72. So I was in this little high school,

  73. and Joe, I was a sophomore, I was a fairly young Christian,

  74. and Joe was a senior, and we had Bible class in our school,

  75. and we started studying Revelations,

  76. and Joe was studying with a teacher,

  77. and Joe was convinced that Jesus was going to come back in May of that year.

  78. I mean, he just knew for sure that that was the end of the world,

  79. and Jesus was going to come back in May,

  80. and so Joe, he just refused to study.

  81. So Joe, his senior year, he didn't do his homework.

  82. So if you're a student in here, this is not a good thing.

  83. He didn't do his homework.

  84. He didn't study, and whenever we were asked,

  85. well, why aren't you doing it?

  86. He goes, well, it's the end of the world.

  87. Why do we have to worry about that?

  88. Because Jesus is going to come back, and I don't need to study.

  89. And you know what happened to Joe?

  90. Joe was with us next year in school

  91. because he failed out because the end of the world didn't happen,

  92. and he didn't study, and he had to learn all about that.

  93. And then some of us, we just kind of think in our mind,

  94. well, it's not really important to me today.

  95. I don't really think about Jesus coming back

  96. because when he comes back, I'm just going to be dead.

  97. And I can just live my life now, have a lot of fun,

  98. and get everything I need done,

  99. and I'm not going to worry about that

  100. because there's a lot of grace, and God will forgive me,

  101. and when he comes back, I'll be dead.

  102. But you know, when we look at this book today

  103. and these next couple weeks as we look at these churches

  104. that John is talking to,

  105. it's probably one of the most practical books

  106. we can look at as Christians.

  107. It's probably one of the books that talks a lot

  108. about what does it mean to be a follower of God.

  109. It talks a lot about Christ and who he is,

  110. and it talks a lot about God.

  111. It talks a lot about the church,

  112. and there are so many things that we can learn

  113. from this time and this book,

  114. and so I'm excited to kind of dive into it

  115. and just swim a couple inches,

  116. and we'll get a little deeper,

  117. and we'll get a little deeper,

  118. but we're going to enter into this book of Revelations,

  119. the Apocalypse.

  120. It was 1980, and don't tell me if you weren't alive then, okay?

  121. But I was alive, and I see people giggling.

  122. It was 1980, and we went on a senior

  123. or a high school mission trip.

  124. It actually was just a beach project.

  125. We went down to the beach to build houses

  126. and to fix things and stuff like that,

  127. and we were down in Fort Walden Beach in Florida,

  128. and I had just come off some swimming,

  129. and I sat down, and there's a group of us students talking,

  130. and we were hanging out on the beach shore,

  131. and the waves were okay.

  132. It was a little rough, but it wasn't that bad,

  133. and I was talking to some friends,

  134. and unbeknownst to me, two of my best friends,

  135. Dwayne and Steve Elliott.

  136. They were off shore, and they were playing in the water

  137. and hanging out, and we were all talking,

  138. and we didn't know anything bad was going to happen

  139. until all of a sudden we heard this mom scream,

  140. bloody murder,

  141. and she started screaming,

  142. my babies, my babies,

  143. and we were just talking and eating lunch

  144. and hanging out,

  145. and we looked up,

  146. and Steve and Dwayne,

  147. they were no longer on the shore.

  148. They were like half a mile out to the sea.

  149. I mean, they were hanging out,

  150. and it was kind of calm,

  151. but they got caught in this riptide,

  152. and before they knew it,

  153. they were being drugged out to the sea,

  154. and people were panicking,

  155. and I mean, it was incredibly scary.

  156. I was a young kid,

  157. and I just remember it so vividly in my mind,

  158. and people, adults were trying to get out there,

  159. but the waves were too strong,

  160. and they were just getting pulled out,

  161. and all of a sudden,

  162. like out of nowhere,

  163. the surfer came on a surfboard.

  164. I hadn't seen him all day,

  165. didn't know where he came from,

  166. but the surfer came on a surfboard,

  167. and he surfed out to them.

  168. The boys draped themselves around the surfboard,

  169. and the surfer brought them back into shore,

  170. and when he brought them back into shore,

  171. people were so,

  172. I mean, they're just crying and emotional,

  173. and they're surrounding Steve and Dwayne,

  174. and trying to get them hydrated,

  175. and what's going on,

  176. and all these things,

  177. and when we looked for the surfer,

  178. he wasn't around.

  179. We didn't ever see him again.

  180. We didn't know where he went.

  181. We just knew that there was this thing that happened,

  182. and this surfer came up,

  183. and saved these boys.

  184. Now, I tell this story not because of the surfer,

  185. because we don't know what or who the surfer was,

  186. but I tell this story because

  187. I think this story represents the church sometimes.

  188. What I mean by that is

  189. churches start off,

  190. and they stay close to shore.

  191. They're in the sweet spot.

  192. They're doing the right thing.

  193. They're hanging out.

  194. They're in the safe zone,

  195. but all of a sudden,

  196. this riptide comes along,

  197. and it's really gentle,

  198. and it starts to pull on people,

  199. and people don't notice it at first,

  200. but all of a sudden,

  201. before you know it,

  202. you've gone from being safe as a church

  203. where God has called you

  204. and what he wants you to do,

  205. to all of a sudden,

  206. you're way out in the waves

  207. in the ocean.

  208. Sometimes you never get back.

  209. You just disappear as a church

  210. and as God's people.

  211. You start off safe.

  212. You start off in control.

  213. You start off on the right path.

  214. You start off on the beach,

  215. but slowly,

  216. you get moved off a track,

  217. and we lose focus,

  218. and we disappear,

  219. and that's the message

  220. that John is talking to

  221. to the church of Ephesus.

  222. Bear with me,

  223. because I'm going to fill you in

  224. on some background knowledge.

  225. Don't go to sleep,

  226. but you need to know this

  227. because it's important to understand

  228. what John is trying to say.

  229. Now, John the apostle,

  230. he's the apostle.

  231. He's the one that Jesus called from the shore.

  232. He was in Galilee.

  233. He was fishing with his dad

  234. and his brother, James,

  235. and they were fishing,

  236. and Jesus came,

  237. and he called them away

  238. from the fishing business,

  239. and they started to become his disciples.

  240. He was one of the sons of thunder.

  241. It wasn't called the son of thunder

  242. because he liked thunder.

  243. It was because he was loud.

  244. He was powerful.

  245. He was tough.

  246. He was part of Jesus' inner circle.

  247. He was in that inner circle,

  248. a group of people,

  249. that when Jesus went up

  250. to the Mount of Transfiguration

  251. and he metamorphed,

  252. he basically peeled back his skin,

  253. and you saw what he was like inside

  254. as he was outside.

  255. He became as white as snow.

  256. He was there.

  257. He saw that happen.

  258. He was the disciple that Jesus loved.

  259. In the Last Supper,

  260. there's John who's laying down

  261. with his head against Jesus' chest,

  262. and so he had his place of honor.

  263. A lot of people think

  264. that John was Jesus' cousin.

  265. He was at the crucifixion.

  266. All the other disciples were gone,

  267. but John was at the crucifixion.

  268. Remember the scene?

  269. Jesus looks down at him.

  270. He says,

  271. John, take care of my mom,

  272. and so Jesus gives John

  273. the responsibility

  274. to take care of Mary,

  275. and so he's at the crucifixion,

  276. and then he helps bury

  277. the body of Jesus,

  278. and then he runs off

  279. after the tomb is open,

  280. and he's the first one there.

  281. He beats Peter,

  282. and he's at the door,

  283. and he's looking in

  284. in the resurrected Christ.

  285. The Christ isn't there.

  286. The body's gone.

  287. He's resurrected,

  288. and from that point on,

  289. John becomes this amazing

  290. church leader.

  291. He becomes this powerful force

  292. amongst the churches

  293. in Jerusalem

  294. and all around Asia Minor,

  295. and we're told in this passage

  296. by the time we get to this point

  297. that he's been put in prison.

  298. Most of the other disciples

  299. have been martyred.

  300. They've been killed.

  301. Peter was crucified upside down,

  302. so if you think crucifixion is bad,

  303. think about being crucified upside down,

  304. and John is becoming an old man,

  305. and he's on this island of Patmos,

  306. this prison island,

  307. and he's there,

  308. and he's writing these stories,

  309. God's word that God is speaking to him,

  310. and we're told in the first part of John

  311. that he's taken up into heaven,

  312. and he sees his vision.

  313. He sees Jesus,

  314. and Jesus tells him to write a letter,

  315. to write a letter to the seven churches,

  316. to write a letter about what's going on

  317. in their life concerning how they're doing,

  318. what they're doing,

  319. what they should be doing,

  320. and he talks to them about what the end times is like.

  321. So he's up there,

  322. he's in this vision,

  323. Jesus is telling him to write down everything,

  324. he's writing down all these things,

  325. and he's told to write a letter to these churches,

  326. to tell them how they're doing.

  327. My question for us is,

  328. you ever wonder

  329. what kind of letter Jesus would write to you?

  330. I mean, if John was up there,

  331. and he says,

  332. hey, I want you to take down a letter,

  333. and I want you to write to Tobin,

  334. or to Steve,

  335. or to Mary,

  336. or to Christina,

  337. or to Dwight,

  338. what would be the letter

  339. that Jesus would write to us?

  340. I mean, as he looks at our life,

  341. and he sees us living life,

  342. what would he say about how we're living life?

  343. What would he say about what we're doing?

  344. What do you think the letter

  345. would say

  346. to the churches in Hong Kong?

  347. If Jesus were to write a letter

  348. to the churches of Hong Kong,

  349. what would he say to them?

  350. What would he say to Watermark?

  351. And so he begins this letter

  352. to this church in Ephesus,

  353. and Ephesus was this amazing city.

  354. It was a significant city,

  355. and I know I'm going to get in trouble,

  356. but I think Ephesus

  357. is so much like Hong Kong.

  358. I mean, it was one of the most important cities

  359. in Asia Minor.

  360. I mean, it was this huge city.

  361. The Romans called it Luminasia.

  362. It was the light of Asia.

  363. The light emanated from Ephesus

  364. and all the Roman Empire.

  365. The Romans had this special agreement

  366. with the community of Ephesus,

  367. and the Ephesus had their own government.

  368. They could make their own laws.

  369. They had this massive harbor

  370. that all these ships came into,

  371. and all trade flowed in and out of Ephesus.

  372. There were about half a million people

  373. when John writes this letter.

  374. There are four major trade routes,

  375. and they all converge in Ephesus,

  376. so any kind of trade,

  377. any kind of commerce,

  378. anything that happened

  379. in that part of Turkey

  380. that had to go through Ephesus.

  381. I mean, it was powerful.

  382. In the center of the city,

  383. there was this temple.

  384. It's one of the seven wonders of the world.

  385. And if you've ever been to Greece

  386. and you saw the Parthenon,

  387. this temple was twice as big as that temple.

  388. It was a temple of Diana.

  389. And it was a center of pagan worship,

  390. and really, really, really bad things happened there.

  391. I mean, the city was out of control

  392. because of this temple.

  393. Sometimes they call it the temple of Artemis,

  394. and there was a cult there.

  395. And this cult was all about sex,

  396. was all about debauchery,

  397. all about prostitution.

  398. The temple was actually an amazing place.

  399. The temple was one of the first banks in history.

  400. It was said that it was probably

  401. one of the most secure places in history.

  402. If you were a criminal

  403. and you were in trouble of getting prosecuted,

  404. you would go into the temple

  405. because by the laws,

  406. no one could touch you in there.

  407. So a lot of bad things happened in the temple.

  408. There were thousands of prostitutes

  409. that went out every night

  410. to sell their wares,

  411. to sell themselves

  412. because it was part of the worship of Diana.

  413. It was all about sex.

  414. And it felt like the more sex you had,

  415. the closer you got to God.

  416. One Greek philosopher,

  417. I was reading some articles,

  418. one Greek philosopher

  419. who lived in Ephesus said this.

  420. I mean, he was a philosopher

  421. known as the philosopher who never smiled.

  422. And he asked him,

  423. why don't you ever smile?

  424. And he said,

  425. how can I

  426. with the people in my city?

  427. They're full of wickedness

  428. and debauchery.

  429. Another philosopher,

  430. when he wrote about Ephesus,

  431. he said this,

  432. the people of Ephesus are goats.

  433. They eat wherever they want,

  434. they poop wherever they want,

  435. and they fornicate wherever they want.

  436. So Ephesus was,

  437. in one way,

  438. this amazing city,

  439. but in another way,

  440. it was not a nice city.

  441. And in Acts 19,

  442. Paul comes

  443. and he plants

  444. this small little church

  445. in the midst of craziness.

  446. Can you imagine that?

  447. I mean,

  448. I don't know what is

  449. the worst city

  450. that you can imagine

  451. in your world

  452. or where you would say,

  453. if I had to plant a church,

  454. this is the one place

  455. that I would not want

  456. to plant a church.

  457. It's probably someplace

  458. in Australia

  459. or South Africa

  460. or something like that.

  461. The easy places

  462. to plant church

  463. are in Texas,

  464. but I don't know

  465. what that would look like

  466. for you,

  467. but Paul plants

  468. this small church in there,

  469. and we're told that

  470. for three months

  471. he teaches in the synagogue.

  472. He gets kicked out

  473. of the synagogue

  474. because he's too radical

  475. for the Jews.

  476. And then he takes over

  477. this small little school,

  478. and for the next three years,

  479. he basically teaches

  480. night and day,

  481. night and day

  482. to the people,

  483. and he teaches about Christ.

  484. He teaches about the gospel.

  485. He teaches about the freedom.

  486. He teaches about grace.

  487. He teaches about

  488. all these things.

  489. And what we're told

  490. in Scripture

  491. and in Acts

  492. and other books

  493. that this major revival

  494. takes place.

  495. I mean,

  496. it's this massive revival.

  497. I mean,

  498. it's out of control.

  499. People are coming to Christ.

  500. There's stories of people,

  501. they were really big

  502. into witchcraft in Ephesus,

  503. and so everybody collected books.

  504. And there's one story

  505. where people took

  506. all their witchcraft books

  507. and they burned them

  508. because they wanted

  509. to follow Christ

  510. and they didn't want

  511. those things

  512. in their house anymore.

  513. And we're told

  514. that the cost of those things

  515. was over 50,000 silver coins.

  516. That means it's 50,000 days labor,

  517. worth of days labor.

  518. They just burn it up like that.

  519. I mean,

  520. this revival happens

  521. and people,

  522. they don't go to the temple anymore.

  523. They're not paying

  524. the prostitutes anymore.

  525. They're not going

  526. to the bank anymore.

  527. It's interesting

  528. when you put the banks

  529. and prostitutes together.

  530. That's a,

  531. I don't want to go there,

  532. but anyway,

  533. but there's this thing there.

  534. They don't do that anymore.

  535. They're not buying

  536. the silver idols anymore.

  537. And the businessmen

  538. get really upset.

  539. The businessmen

  540. get really upset

  541. because their business

  542. is being hurt

  543. by the Christians

  544. and by this thing

  545. called the way

  546. and people are choosing

  547. to follow God.

  548. And so they cause

  549. this revolt to happen.

  550. And they go out

  551. and they try to actually

  552. kill Paul.

  553. They try to kill him

  554. and basically he's rescued

  555. and he's taken away

  556. and after he leaves,

  557. Timothy comes in

  558. and he takes over.

  559. And the church continues

  560. to grow

  561. and change the culture

  562. and change society

  563. and it's doing

  564. amazing,

  565. amazing,

  566. amazing things.

  567. I mean,

  568. you can read about it

  569. in scripture

  570. and other books.

  571. They're doing

  572. some incredible things.

  573. When Paul writes

  574. the letter to them

  575. in Ephesians

  576. and you can read it

  577. and we've studied it,

  578. he says like 20 times,

  579. you are a church

  580. that loves God.

  581. You are a church

  582. that's doing everything right.

  583. You are a church

  584. that has the right priorities.

  585. He's saying all these things

  586. to them

  587. but 30 years later,

  588. Jesus tells John,

  589. I want you to write

  590. a letter to them.

  591. That's what we're

  592. going to look at.

  593. So John writes this letter

  594. and in the very first verse

  595. what you see is he says,

  596. to the angel

  597. of the church of Ephesus

  598. write,

  599. to the one who holds

  600. the seven stars

  601. in his right hand,

  602. the one who walks

  603. among you,

  604. the seven golden lampstands.

  605. What you know

  606. from the first chapter

  607. is that's Jesus.

  608. The lampstands

  609. represent the church.

  610. So the churches

  611. are these light,

  612. they're the light

  613. and the darkness

  614. are the Christians

  615. in this church

  616. and these lampstands

  617. represent the church

  618. and the stars

  619. represent the pastors

  620. and the leaders

  621. and what he says

  622. is that Jesus is there,

  623. Jesus is with us

  624. right now.

  625. Jesus sees everything

  626. that you're doing.

  627. Did you hear me?

  628. Jesus sees everything

  629. that you're doing.

  630. He knows what you're

  631. going through.

  632. There's nothing

  633. that's going to catch him

  634. unaware in your life.

  635. He's there amongst

  636. the lampstands,

  637. he's watching,

  638. he's in control.

  639. And in verse two

  640. he says this,

  641. I know your deeds

  642. and your toils

  643. and your perseverance

  644. that you cannot

  645. tolerate evil men

  646. and you put to test

  647. those who call

  648. themselves apostles.

  649. And they are not

  650. and you found

  651. them to be false.

  652. Jesus says he knows

  653. their deeds.

  654. He knows that they're

  655. working,

  656. the word there

  657. is copious,

  658. it means in Greek

  659. that they're just

  660. working to the point

  661. of sweat and blood.

  662. These guys in this

  663. church of Ephesus,

  664. they work tirelessly

  665. for the gospel.

  666. I mean they weren't

  667. just spectators,

  668. they weren't just

  669. watching,

  670. they were doers.

  671. So this whole church

  672. is this amazing

  673. church of people

  674. and they're just

  675. working and serving

  676. and doing and

  677. feeding poor people

  678. and going out on

  679. mission trips

  680. and doing all these

  681. things.

  682. He said they persevered,

  683. that things got bad,

  684. things got rough,

  685. that people were

  686. trying to attack them

  687. and kill them

  688. but they stayed in there

  689. and they stayed it

  690. and they sacrificed

  691. and sometimes it even

  692. cost them their finances

  693. and their livelihood.

  694. They were patient,

  695. they were patient,

  696. they were being afflicted

  697. with hardships

  698. and persecution

  699. but they were faithful,

  700. they didn't stand up

  701. to wickedness.

  702. Did you see that

  703. in verse two?

  704. That when wickedness

  705. came into their midst

  706. they didn't stand into it,

  707. they tested every teacher.

  708. I mean there's this thing

  709. about circuit teachers

  710. and they're going around

  711. from city to city to city

  712. and a lot of times

  713. these new people come in

  714. and it happens sometimes

  715. in Hong Kong,

  716. you just let them come in

  717. and they preach in your service

  718. and you don't even know

  719. what they really believe

  720. and what they're about

  721. but the Ephesians

  722. didn't do that,

  723. they listened to everything,

  724. they compared it

  725. to what scripture said,

  726. they compared it

  727. to the gospel

  728. and they found out

  729. who those who were orthodox

  730. and those who were not

  731. and they kicked out

  732. the false teachers

  733. and they kept the good teachers.

  734. The passage says

  735. they hated immoral things.

  736. Verse six says

  737. they hated the followers

  738. of Nicholas

  739. and Nicholas was his Christian

  740. and he basically said,

  741. he started this cult

  742. and he basically said

  743. if you're a Christian

  744. you can basically do

  745. whatever you want

  746. because God loves you.

  747. That if you're a Christian

  748. you can do anything you want

  749. because there's grace

  750. and there's forgiveness

  751. and so they started this cult

  752. and it all centered again

  753. around sexuality

  754. and so the followers

  755. of Nicholas

  756. were about sexuality

  757. and sensualness

  758. and John looks at them

  759. and Jesus looks at them

  760. and says

  761. I'm so glad

  762. you don't follow those people.

  763. I'm so glad

  764. you don't follow your flesh.

  765. I mean they were

  766. the pastor's dream

  767. as a church.

  768. I mean they did everything right.

  769. They had good theology

  770. and in theological terms

  771. we call that orthodoxy,

  772. ortho straight,

  773. doxy teaching.

  774. They had orthopraxy,

  775. ortho straight,

  776. practice right on.

  777. So this church

  778. did everything right

  779. and they studied

  780. and thought everything right.

  781. I mean is that amazing?

  782. I mean most churches

  783. they spend all their time

  784. studying their Bible

  785. and doing all these

  786. different programs

  787. and they're so busy

  788. with their head stuck

  789. in God's word

  790. that they don't look

  791. at people around them

  792. and they're not serving

  793. and taking care of people

  794. and then other churches

  795. are just caring

  796. and taking care of people

  797. and doing things

  798. but they don't have theology

  799. and they just go by

  800. their feelings

  801. and their emotions

  802. and you ask them

  803. what does God's word

  804. say about that

  805. and they go

  806. I don't know

  807. but I feel like

  808. this is the right thing to do.

  809. But in Ephesus

  810. they did both.

  811. They knew the word

  812. and they did the word.

  813. So I have a question for you.

  814. Would that be

  815. a church you'd want

  816. to be a part of?

  817. Come on.

  818. I mean that's your dream

  819. isn't it?

  820. As a pastor

  821. that is my dream church.

  822. I mean they're doing

  823. everything

  824. they're listening

  825. to everything you said

  826. hopefully you're not

  827. the bad

  828. immoral teacher

  829. but you're the good teacher

  830. but they're doing

  831. everything you're doing

  832. and I mean

  833. they're out there

  834. serving and they're

  835. feeding people

  836. they're doing everything.

  837. They're perfect.

  838. I mean doing everything

  839. that God expects of them.

  840. And then in verse 4

  841. he says this

  842. but

  843. I had this against you

  844. you've left

  845. your first love.

  846. You've seen the words there

  847. what he's saying?

  848. I mean Jesus is saying

  849. you did everything.

  850. You did everything

  851. I've asked you

  852. but you've lost

  853. your first love.

  854. I think in Chinese

  855. one of the translations

  856. actually says

  857. you threw away

  858. your first love.

  859. Who's your first love?

  860. Jesus.

  861. So this first church

  862. that John is writing to

  863. because Jesus wants him

  864. to write a message

  865. I mean they did everything.

  866. They had all the programs

  867. they had all the buildings

  868. they had everything going on

  869. they did it all right.

  870. But when Jesus looks at them

  871. he looks at their heart.

  872. And he realizes

  873. they've lost their first love.

  874. They've had no relationship

  875. with Christ.

  876. I mean Paul warned

  877. the church at Corinth

  878. of the same thing.

  879. Remember that?

  880. The church at Corinth

  881. had all the spiritual gifts

  882. they had everything

  883. they had all the teaching

  884. I mean they were

  885. an amazing church.

  886. And Paul said to them

  887. he says

  888. you know in 1 Corinthians

  889. we read it all the time

  890. in wedding services right?

  891. We read it in wedding services

  892. that love is patient

  893. love is kind

  894. and we think

  895. well that's such a beautiful thing.

  896. But in scripture

  897. it was a rebuke.

  898. Paul was looking at the church

  899. and they weren't doing that.

  900. And so he's telling them

  901. this is what love is.

  902. And he ends up saying

  903. you can have all these gifts

  904. you can have all these talents

  905. but if you don't have love

  906. you're

  907. nothing.

  908. And so the passage says

  909. in this center

  910. this thing

  911. that these people

  912. did everything

  913. but they didn't

  914. love Christ.

  915. And the Bible says

  916. that what Christ wants

  917. most out of all of us

  918. is our love.

  919. He wants our relationship

  920. with him.

  921. Guys this was

  922. blew my mind.

  923. As a young Christian

  924. all I thought was

  925. God wanted my obedience.

  926. And so I did

  927. I did

  928. I did

  929. I did

  930. I did

  931. I did everything

  932. I was told to do

  933. I did all those things

  934. I did it all.

  935. And if someone were to ask me

  936. did I do it right?

  937. I'd say yeah

  938. because I did everything

  939. that God has asked me to do

  940. but what he says here

  941. is he doesn't want that.

  942. He wants a relationship

  943. with us.

  944. I mean I think it's why

  945. the Bible

  946. does this make sense?

  947. I think it's why

  948. the Bible talks about

  949. marriage so much

  950. when it talks about

  951. our walk with God.

  952. I mean you think about it

  953. you know you see it

  954. in marriages

  955. you see it in families

  956. you see it in churches

  957. and relationships

  958. I mean when you fall in love

  959. when you see that person

  960. I mean you just

  961. you go crazy right?

  962. I mean you're just

  963. loving them

  964. you're thinking about them

  965. you want to date them

  966. every moment

  967. you're just talking about

  968. what you want to do with them

  969. you want to be together

  970. I mean Christina

  971. couldn't take her hands

  972. off of me

  973. she just had her hands

  974. on me all the time

  975. because she just wanted

  976. to be with me

  977. and yeah why not?

  978. but I mean that's

  979. that's what happens

  980. when you're in love

  981. right?

  982. Love consumes you

  983. when you're in love

  984. you want to be with that person

  985. you want to give them

  986. your heart

  987. you want to give them

  988. your time

  989. you want to give them

  990. your money

  991. I mean you become

  992. diligent

  993. you become passionate

  994. you become disciplined

  995. you forgive

  996. I mean Christina

  997. had all these conversations

  998. about trying to save

  999. our money

1000. and she was in Austin

  1001. I was in Dallas

1002. and you know in America

  1003. telephone calls

  1004. are more expensive

1005. if they're in the same state

  1006. it's cheaper for me

  1007. to call Hong Kong

  1008. than to call Austin

  1009. and every week

  1010. every month

1011. I'd get this phone bill

1012. it was like 500 US dollars

  1013. and I was a seminary student

  1014. I had no money

1015. and I would call her up

  1016. that Sunday night

  1017. and say hey

1018. I just got this bill

  1019. she's laughing

  1020. I would say

  1021. we cannot talk anymore

  1022. I mean this bill

  1023. I don't even know

1024. how we're going to pay

  1025. these bills

  1026. it's 500 US dollars

  1027. I can't eat

  1028. for the next week

  1029. I don't know

1030. what we're going to do

  1031. and she goes okay

  1032. so okay

1033. what do you want to do?

  1034. I said well let's don't call

1035. for at least three weeks

  1036. let's don't talk

  1037. for three weeks

  1038. we'll save the money

  1039. just don't talk

  1040. for three weeks

  1041. okay okay okay

  1042. that night

  1043. hey how you doing?

  1044. I thought we weren't

  1045. going to call

  1046. yeah but I just

1047. want to hear your voice

  1048. I want to talk

  1049. how was your day?

  1050. and you're like okay

  1051. just give my wallet

  1052. give it to AT&T

  1053. here you go

  1054. sorry Bernard

1055. but that's what it is

  1056. when you're in love

  1057. right?

  1058. you don't become disciplined

  1059. you become

  1060. you're giving

  1061. you're grace oriented

  1062. you can't wait

  1063. the next moment

  1064. I mean we had

  1065. these discussions

  1066. like okay

  1067. it's going to take

  1068. two hours to drive

  1069. down there

  1070. and you take

  1071. two hours for you

  1072. to drive down here

  1073. and we're going to

  1074. 15 minutes together

  1075. is that enough?

  1076. that's enough

  1077. let's do it

  1078. you drive four hours

  1079. to spend 15 minutes

  1080. together right?

1081. but that's what you did

  1082. when you're in love

  1083. that's what you did

  1084. when you wanted

  1085. to be with somebody

  1086. that's what you wanted

  1087. to be about

  1088. that's who you were

  1089. the question is

1090. when was the last time

  1091. we felt that way

  1092. about Jesus?

1093. when was the last time

  1094. that spending time

  1095. with him

  1096. was all consuming?

1097. when was the last time

1098. you were going to drive

  1099. two hours

  1100. so you could spend

  1101. that 15 minutes?

1102. when was the last time

  1103. you were willing

  1104. to sacrifice

  1105. all these things

  1106. because the most

  1107. important thing for you

1108. was to be with him

  1109. to pray

1110. to be in his presence

  1111. guys it happens

  1112. to all of us

  1113. it happened to this

  1114. amazing church

  1115. in Ephesus

  1116. and I'm not speaking

  1117. at you

1118. I'm speaking to my heart

  1119. this has been

  1120. an incredibly hard

  1121. week for me

  1122. as I go through

  1123. this passage

  1124. and keep continually

  1125. examining my heart

  1126. I mean what I realized

  1127. in my life

  1128. is sometimes

  1129. I start to lose

  1130. this joy

  1131. I lose this joy

  1132. in the joy

  1133. of being with God

1134. or being with the person

  1135. that you love

  1136. and everything

  1137. becomes normal

  1138. everything becomes

  1139. mundane

  1140. everything becomes

  1141. dull

  1142. everything becomes

  1143. your duty

  1144. you just do it

  1145. it's a chore

  1146. you just do it

  1147. and you lose

  1148. your joy

  1149. and the next thing

1150. that happens in my life

  1151. often is I start

  1152. to lose my ability

  1153. to love other people

  1154. I mean I lose my joy

1155. and I lose my joy

  1156. of being around people

  1157. I mean the Bible

  1158. says that the only

  1159. reason we can love

  1160. each other

  1161. is because God

  1162. first loved us

  1163. and the moment

  1164. we lose our awe

  1165. and wonder

  1166. of Jesus' love

  1167. for us

  1168. we lose our ability

  1169. to love people

  1170. did you hear

  1171. what I said

  1172. because I've been

  1173. saying that over

  1174. and over to myself

  1175. the moment

  1176. we lose our wonder

  1177. and awe

  1178. of Jesus

  1179. and his love

  1180. for us

  1181. we lose our ability

  1182. to love people

  1183. people just become

  1184. a distraction

  1185. we become critical

  1186. we become judgmental

  1187. we complain

  1188. we argue

  1189. we're no compassion

  1190. I mean if you're

  1191. in that place

  1192. if you feel that

  1193. if you see someone

  1194. who's a believer

  1195. and they're

  1196. nitpicky

  1197. and they're arguing

  1198. and they're complaining

  1199. and they're judgmental

  1200. and they're

  1201. tough to be around

1202. you think in your mind

  1203. I wonder if they're

  1204. in awe

  1205. of how much

  1206. God loves them

  1207. you know

  1208. I lose the ability

  1209. to love people

  1210. I mean I lose my joy

1211. then I lose my ability

  1212. to love people

1213. and then the last thing

1214. that finally happens to me

1215. is I just get this weird

  1216. perspective of myself

  1217. I don't know

1218. if it ever happens to you

  1219. but I start thinking

  1220. of myself more importantly

  1221. than I am

  1222. I just start thinking

  1223. thoughts like

  1224. why I deserve this

  1225. and you know

  1226. I know

  1227. I start thinking

  1228. about things

  1229. that I deserve

1230. and what's good for me

  1231. and I think about

  1232. myself being more

  1233. important than other people

  1234. and the scripture says

1235. we're to think of other people

1236. and how we're to please God

1237. but when we get down

  1238. this road

1239. and we slide from joy

  1240. into disliking people

  1241. we start to think

  1242. about ourselves

  1243. and we put ourselves

  1244. up on this pedestal

  1245. and we say

  1246. what do I deserve

  1247. what do I need

  1248. and our world

  1249. becomes self-centered

  1250. self-reliant

1251. and instead of pleasing God

  1252. we think about pleasing

  1253. Tobin

1254. have you ever been there

  1255. if you ever wonder

  1256. this is you

  1257. you could ask yourself

  1258. some questions

1259. here's one of the questions

  1260. I ask myself

1261. how long has it been

1262. since I've been in awe

1263. of God's grace to me

1264. how long has it been

  1265. since I've thought

  1266. about God's grace

  1267. and I go wow

1268. how could he do that

  1269. because I'm a sinner

1270. when was the last time

  1271. you felt God's presence

  1272. in your life

1273. when was the last time

  1274. you felt that God

  1275. was close to you

  1276. I mean how often

1277. do we think we need grace

  1278. in our life

  1279. do we pray before

  1280. our day begins

  1281. do we pray before

1282. we head into the big meeting

  1283. do we pray before

  1284. we come home

1285. to be with our spouse

  1286. and our kiddos

1287. when was the last time

  1288. that you had joy

  1289. praying

  1290. and reading God's word

1291. when was the last time

  1292. we cried

  1293. when we thought about

  1294. how God

  1295. was so gracious

  1296. to us

1297. when was the last time

  1298. we cried

  1299. when we thought about

  1300. how gracious God

  1301. Mr. Tobin

  1302. are you

  1303. if you can't answer

  1304. those questions

1305. or if you have a hard time

  1306. answering when those things

  1307. happen

  1308. it probably means

  1309. that you like

  1310. the church of Ephesus

1311. have lost your first love

1312. and you started to love

  1313. something else

1314. and this is a big deal guys

  1315. in verse 5

  1316. Jesus says

  1317. hey come back

  1318. turn around

1319. I want to be your lover

1320. I want to be in your life

1321. I want to be your first love

  1322. and he says

  1323. he sings

1324. he gives us these ideas

1325. of how we come back

1326. and so if we're sliding away

  1327. if we've gone away

  1328. we've lost joy

  1329. we think differently

  1330. of people

  1331. we think differently

  1332. of ourselves

  1333. he says

  1334. here come back

  1335. come back

  1336. come back

  1337. I want you

  1338. I want a relationship

  1339. with you

  1340. he says

1341. this is how you do it

  1342. in verse 5

  1343. he says

  1344. remember

  1345. remember where you were

1346. remember where you fell from

1347. remember what it was like

1348. before Jesus opened your eyes

1349. and you walked in darkness

  1350. do you remember that?

1351. do you remember the darkness

  1352. that you walked in

  1353. and the confusion

  1354. and the agony

  1355. and the pain

  1356. and the frustration

  1357. and the guilt

  1358. and the shame

  1359. remember the joy

  1360. of your first Christmas

  1361. as a Christian

  1362. do you remember that?

  1363. I remember that

  1364. do you remember

  1365. when all the songs

  1366. finally made sense?

1367. I mean you heard them

  1368. in the shopping malls

1369. and all these other things

  1370. but then

1371. I mean some of them

1372. still don't make any sense

1373. like the little drummer boy

1374. and some of those songs

1375. I'm still trying to figure those out

  1376. theologically

  1377. but they sound cool

  1378. but I mean

  1379. do you remember

  1380. when all those songs

  1381. made sense?

  1382. do you remember

  1383. when Jesus loves me

  1384. this I know

  1385. for the Bible

  1386. tells me so

  1387. little ones

  1388. to him belong

  1389. we are weak

  1390. but he is strong

  1391. do you remember

  1392. when that made sense

  1393. to you

  1394. for the first time?

  1395. do you remember

  1396. the first time

  1397. you prayed

  1398. and you knew

  1399. that Jesus was there?

  1400. do you remember

  1401. the first time

1402. you had a Bible study?

  1403. do you remember

  1404. the first time

1405. you went into a Bible study?

  1406. I remember

1407. I had to go to this Bible study

  1408. these guys

1409. I wanted to be there

  1410. I wanted to study

  1411. but I didn't have a Bible

1412. and I was so ashamed

  1413. because I didn't have a Bible

  1414. I told my parents

1415. I want to go to this study

  1416. I'm a new Christian

  1417. but I don't have a Bible

  1418. and there wasn't a Bible

  1419. in our house

  1420. because our parents

  1421. my parents weren't

  1422. Christ followers

  1423. they followed themselves

  1424. and so my parents

  1425. went out

1426. and bought me this Bible

  1427. it's this big

  1428. King James Bible

  1429. it's like this big

  1430. so I walked in

  1431. okay I'm ready

  1432. for Bible study

  1433. boom

  1434. and people were like

  1435. what?

  1436. but do you remember

  1437. that time

  1438. you first bought

  1439. that Bible?

  1440. I mean I think

  1441. some of us

1442. we go into our house

  1443. there's probably

  1444. 50 Bibles

  1445. but do you remember

  1446. the joy of seeing

  1447. God's word

  1448. for the first time?

  1449. Do you remember

  1450. the first time

  1451. you saw the cross

  1452. and you knew

  1453. it was for you

1454. but Christ took it instead?

  1455. Do you remember that?

  1456. I do

  1457. do you remember

  1458. the first time

  1459. you shared the gospel

  1460. with your friends?

  1461. They saw the changes

  1462. in your life

  1463. they wanted to know

  1464. what was going on

  1465. they asked you

  1466. what happened to you

  1467. and you shared

  1468. about what Christ

  1469. did in your heart

  1470. some of them laughed

1471. but some of them said

  1472. I want that

  1473. do you remember that?

  1474. Paul says

  1475. and John says

1476. hey if you've gone off

  1477. if you've forgotten

  1478. remember

1479. remember where you came from

  1480. remember God's grace

  1481. in your life

1482. he says in verse 5

  1483. repent

  1484. ask for God's forgiveness

1485. turn away from the actions

1486. turn away from the thoughts

1487. turn away from the things

  1488. that pulled you away

  1489. from Jesus

1490. turn away from the things

  1491. that pulled you away

  1492. from him

1493. when you first loved him

  1494. what are the idols

  1495. in our lives?

  1496. what are the things

1497. we need to turn away from?

  1498. I think we struggle

  1499. sometimes

  1500. because we want

  1501. to keep them

  1502. and we just say

  1503. we won't pay

  1504. as much attention

  1505. to them

  1506. as we used to

  1507. but God is jealous

  1508. he's a jealous lover

  1509. just like your wife

  1510. or your husband

  1511. or your spouse

  1512. doesn't want anybody else

1513. to have a part of you

  1514. God doesn't want

  1515. anybody else

1516. to have a part of you

  1517. and John is saying

1518. hey remember where you came from

  1519. and all these things

  1520. that dragged you away

  1521. all these things

  1522. that made you prideful

  1523. all these things

  1524. that made you selfish

  1525. all these things

  1526. that made you arrogant

  1527. self-sufficient

  1528. all these things

  1529. repent

  1530. beg for forgiveness

1531. ask God to take them

  1532. away from you

  1533. and then he says

  1534. return

  1535. return to the things

  1536. that you did

  1537. in the beginning

  1538. what were the things

  1539. that you did

  1540. in the beginning

  1541. what were the things

  1542. that you did

  1543. when you first came

  1544. to Christ

  1545. what were the things

  1546. that overwhelmed

  1547. your heart

  1548. when you understood

  1549. God's grace

  1550. what were those things

  1551. do those things

  1552. for me it was

  1553. reading my Bible

1554. for me it was prayer

  1555. for me it was

  1556. talking to other Christians

1557. about what they were learning

  1558. and the things

1559. that God was teaching them

  1560. for me it was

1561. I know this is going

  1562. to sound terrible

  1563. and I'm not going

  1564. to do it

  1565. but singing songs

  1566. I always know

  1567. what I'm doing

  1568. good spiritually

  1569. because I can sing

  1570. to God

  1571. and when I'm not

  1572. doing good spiritually

  1573. I have a hard time

  1574. singing

  1575. and Paul is

  1576. and John is saying

  1577. all these things

  1578. hey remember

  1579. remember

  1580. repent

  1581. repent

  1582. return

  1583. return

  1584. and listen

  1585. to me

  1586. he's saying

  1587. guys

  1588. God's love

  1589. is important

  1590. and your love

  1591. to God

  1592. is important

  1593. and he's saying

  1594. here in his passage

  1595. that if you don't

  1596. turn around

  1597. if we don't

  1598. as a church

  1599. turn around

  1600. if we don't

  1601. do these things

  1602. he says

  1603. that Jesus

  1604. is going

  1605. to come up

  1606. take away

  1607. our light

  1608. take away

  1609. our relationship

  1610. and we don't

  1611. want that

  1612. to happen

  1613. to us

  1614. as a church

  1615. we don't

  1616. want that

  1617. to happen

  1618. to us

  1619. as his people

  1620. we want

  1621. to be

  1622. in the midst

  1623. of his

  1624. relationship

  1625. with him

  1626. verse 7

  1627. John finishes

  1628. with this

  1629. church

  1630. remember

  1631. this is

  1632. the church

  1633. that did

  1634. everything

  1635. but they

  1636. had nothing

  1637. and he says

  1638. he who has

  1639. ears

  1640. let him

  1641. hear

  1642. it's

  1643. Hebrew

  1644. it basically

  1645. means

  1646. God opens

  1647. the ears

  1648. of his

  1649. people

  1650. true believers

  1651. and true

  1652. believers

  1653. hear God's

  1654. word

  1655. and he says

  1656. if we hear

  1657. God's word

  1658. God will

  1659. grant to us

  1660. all the

  1661. privileges

  1662. all the

  1663. things

  1664. that Adam

  1665. and Eve

  1666. forego

  1667. forego

  1668. forewent

  1669. gave up

  1670. all the

  1671. things that

  1672. they gave

  1673. up in the

  1674. garden

  1675. because of

  1676. their sin

  1677. he says

  1678. in this

  1679. passage

  1680. that Christ

  1681. wants to

  1682. give those

  1683. things

  1684. to us

  1685. if we

  1686. find

  1687. ourselves

  1688. lacking

  1689. love

  1690. if we

  1691. find

  1692. ourselves

  1693. lacking

  1694. joy

  1695. if we

  1696. find

  1697. ourselves

  1698. thinking

  1699. of other

  1700. people

  1701. as

  1702. distractions

  1703. if we

  1704. find

  1705. ourselves

  1706. thinking

  1707. of ourselves

  1708. as more

  1709. important

  1710. remember

  1711. return

  1712. continue

  1713. doing

  1714. the things

  1715. repenting

  1716. that God

  1717. has done

  1718. in the

  1719. past

  1720. and Christ

  1721. has something

  1722. special for you

  1723. as a church

  1724. does this make

  1725. sense

  1726. I mean this

  1727. isn't a church

  1728. and remember

  1729. this church

  1730. this letter

  1731. is not just

  1732. being read

  1733. to one church

  1734. it's being read

  1735. to all the

  1736. churches

  1737. and the

  1738. question

  1739. amongst this

  1740. letter

  1741. is

  1742. how's

  1743. your

  1744. heart

  1745. I'm not

  1746. asking you

  1747. how you're

  1748. doing

  1749. I'm not

  1750. asking you

  1751. what you're

  1752. doing

  1753. I'm asking

  1754. do you

  1755. love

  1756. God

  1757. is he

  1758. the center

  1759. of your

  1760. life

  1761. Ephesians

  1762. was an

  1763. amazing

  1764. church

  1765. but I

  1766. think they

  1767. struggled

  1768. with the

  1769. same

  1770. things

  1771. that

  1772. watermark

  1773. is going

  1774. to struggle

  1775. with

  1776. and the

  1777. other

  1778. churches

  1779. in Hong

  1780. Kong

  1781. are going

  1782. to struggle

  1783. with

  1784. because after

  1785. a while

  1786. what's going

  1787. to happen

  1788. is we want

  1789. to be

  1790. great

  1791. we're going

  1792. to want

  1793. to be

  1794. amazing

  1795. we're going

  1796. to want

  1797. to be

  1798. excellent

  1799. by worldly

  1800. standards

  1801. we're going

  1802. to want

  1803. to have

  1804. bigger

  1805. crowds

  1806. we're going

  1807. to want

  1808. to have

  1809. more

  1810. programs

  1811. we're going

  1812. to have

  1813. bigger

  1814. buildings

  1815. we want

  1816. to have

  1817. more

  1818. staff

  1819. we want

  1820. to do

  1821. all these

  1822. things

  1823. so that

  1824. people can

  1825. look at

  1826. us

  1827. and go

  1828. wow

  1829. and we

  1830. can do

  1831. the things

  1832. that people

  1833. expect us

  1834. to do

  1835. but John

  1836. says if we

  1837. do that

  1838. and Jesus

  1839. isn't our

  1840. lover

  1841. then it all

  1842. means

  1843. nothing

  1844. it's all

  1845. worthless

  1846. he who

  1847. has ears

  1848. let him

  1849. hear

  1850. John

  1851. Newton

  1852. the

  1853. ex-slave

  1854. trader

  1855. he's a

  1856. wicked

  1857. man

  1858. talk about

  1859. wicked

  1860. men

  1861. John

  1862. Newton

  1863. read his

  1864. biography

  1865. he was

  1866. a bad

  1867. bad

  1868. man

  1869. he's a

  1870. slave

  1871. trader

  1872. killed

  1873. thousands

  1874. and thousands

  1875. of people

  1876. responsible

  1877. for the

  1878. imprisonments

  1879. of thousands

  1880. and thousands

  1881. of people

  1882. God's

  1883. grace

  1884. poured

  1885. out on

  1886. him

  1887. God

  1888. opened

  1889. his

  1890. eyes

  1891. he came

  1892. to Christ

  1893. and he

  1894. wrote the

  1895. most amazing

  1896. song you've

  1897. ever heard

  1898. I mean even

  1899. if you're not a

  1900. believer here

  1901. today you've

  1902. heard it

  1903. amazing grace

  1904. how sweet

  1905. the sound

  1906. that saved

  1907. a wretch

  1908. like me

  1909. I once

  1910. was lost

  1911. but now

  1912. am found

  1913. was blind

  1914. but now

  1915. I see

  1916. he wrote

  1917. this poem

  1918. I love

  1919. poems

  1920. I hardly

  1921. ever read

  1922. them from

  1923. up front

  1924. but I want

  1925. to end

  1926. with this

  1927. poem

  1928. in evil

  1929. long

  1930. I took

  1931. delight

  1932. unawed

  1933. by my

  1934. shame

  1935. or fear

  1936. till a

  1937. new object

  1938. struck

  1939. my sight

  1940. and stopped

  1941. my wild

  1942. career

  1943. I saw

  1944. one hanging

  1945. on a tree

  1946. in agony

  1947. and blood

  1948. who fixed

  1949. his saddened

  1950. eyes on me

  1951. as near

  1952. his cross

  1953. I stood

  1954. sure

  1955. never to

  1956. my latest

  1957. breath

  1958. can I

  1959. forget

  1960. that look

  1961. it seemed

  1962. to charge

  1963. me with

  1964. his death

  1965. though not

  1966. a word

  1967. he spoke

  1968. my conscience

  1969. felt

  1970. and owned

  1971. the guilt

  1972. and plunged

  1973. me in despair

  1974. I saw

  1975. my sins

  1976. his blood

  1977. had spilt

  1978. and helped

  1979. to nail

  1980. him there

  1981. a second

  1982. look he gave

  1983. me

  1984. which said

  1985. I freely

  1986. all forgive

  1987. this blood

  1988. is for your

  1989. ransom paid

  1990. I die

  1991. that you

  1992. shall live

  1993. so while

  1994. his death

  1995. my sin

  1996. displays

  1997. and all

  1998. its black

  1999. his hue

  2000. such is

  2001. the mystery

  2002. of grace

  2003. it seals

  2004. my pardon

  2005. too

  2006. father we

  2007. thank you

  2008. for today

  2009. we thank you

  2010. for the letter

  2011. of john

  2012. to churches

  2013. of revelation

  2014. we thank you

  2015. for the lessons

  2016. that it has

  2017. to teach

  2018. us

  2019. we thank you

  2020. that you

  2021. are in

  2022. midst

  2023. our presence

  2024. that you

  2025. see everything

  2026. that you're

  2027. in control

  2028. father we thank you

  2029. for your patience

  2030. because as your

  2031. people we want

  2032. to do

  2033. do

  2034. do

  2035. do

  2036. but what you

  2037. desire

  2038. most of us

  2039. is your

  2040. love

  2041. our devotion

  2042. relationship

  2043. with you

  2044. father we thank you

  2045. that the church

  2046. of ephesus

  2047. got it

  2048. and for

  2049. 1,200 more

  2050. years

  2051. they served

  2052. you

  2053. and did

  2054. mighty things

  2055. for your

  2056. kingdom

  2057. because of

  2058. your words

  2059. spoken to

  2060. them

  2061. he who

  2062. has ears

  2063. let him

  2064. hear

  2065. father I

  2066. pray for us

  2067. as a church

  2068. I confess

  2069. it is so easy

  2070. to get caught

  2071. up doing

  2072. doing

  2073. and being

  2074. that we

  2075. forget

  2076. whose we

  2077. are

  2078. we forget

  2079. what it

  2080. means to

  2081. love you

  2082. we treat

  2083. those people

  2084. that we

  2085. used to

  2086. passionately

  2087. pursue

  2088. and desire

  2089. and want

  2090. and be

  2091. around

  2092. and we

  2093. treat them

  2094. as normal

  2095. and mundane

  2096. and dull

  2097. we elevate

  2098. ourselves

  2099. as highly

  2100. important

  2101. and beyond

  2102. the troubles

  2103. around us

  2104. all because

  2105. we've forgotten

  2106. your mercy

  2107. and your

  2108. grace

  2109. to us

  2110. sinful

  2111. sinful

  2112. people

  2113. father I

  2114. pray for

  2115. those who

  2116. aren't in

  2117. the family

  2118. they're here

  2119. listening

  2120. I pray that

  2121. the words

  2122. your words

  2123. would stick

  2124. with them

  2125. I pray that

  2126. they would

  2127. consider what

  2128. they cling

  2129. to what

  2130. is it that

  2131. they hold

  2132. as their

  2133. hope

  2134. and they

  2135. would see

  2136. that that

  2137. thing will

  2138. quickly

  2139. tarnish

  2140. and fade

  2141. away

  2142. that it

  2143. might last

  2144. them for the

  2145. next five

  2146. years but it

  2147. won't last

  2148. them for

  2149. eternity

  2150. and that's

  2151. where our

  2152. journey is

  2153. going

  2154. eternity

  2155. father I

  2156. pray for us

  2157. as a church

  2158. that we

  2159. would be a

  2160. church that

  2161. loves you

  2162. that we

  2163. would be a

  2164. church that

  2165. is about

  2166. you

  2167. that we

  2168. wouldn't

  2169. compromise

  2170. time and

  2171. prayer

  2172. relationships

  2173. because that's

  2174. all you really

  2175. want from us

  2176. you want our

  2177. heart

  2178. lord we love

  2179. you

  2180. we need you

  2181. desperately

  2182. we pray these

  2183. things in your

  2184. son jesus holy

  2185. name

  2186. amen

  2187. para

  2188. him

  2189. e
