  1. Good morning, Watermark.

  2. My name is Alfie, and I direct the university ministry here at Watermark Community Church.

  3. I've been here for about two years, just over two years.

  4. And there are a lot of things I love about Watermark.

  5. I love that we are a traveling church, that we move around.

  6. Some people don't like that, but I really do enjoy being in new spaces.

  7. I love that people are changing, that we get to hear the lives of people's stories

  8. and how they're coming to know Christ.

  9. I love that sometimes we have little kids dancing in the front.

  10. And I love that, you know, earlier today I was told off not wearing a blue shirt.

  11. I love baptisms. I love the stories of people being saved.

  12. It reminds me of how I was saved, and it reminds me of the cross and how beautiful it is.

  13. But the cross brings two things to mind.

  14. The sin that plagues our lives and the price that is paid for it.

  15. I'm going to be honest with you guys, this is not going to be an easy message.

  16. Not for me, and not for you either.

  17. In it, we're going to talk a lot about sin, about sex, and about idols in our hearts.

  18. I'm going to see what it looks like in the world, in the church, in our hearts.

  19. And my hope is that at the end of this, that you wouldn't be left in a pit of despair,

  20. but that together we would turn to the cross, and we would see how beautiful it is.

  21. Just as a matter of a note, on your bulletin it says a letter to Pergamum.

  22. That is a typo. It should say Thyatira.

  23. Another thing to note is that I've had a bit of a sore throat,

  24. so if I take breaks to cough, please bear with me.

  25. Okay, let's start with sin.

  26. Sin is our actions, our thoughts, our words that show our hearts,

  27. hearts that are in rebellion against the God of the universe.

  28. There are things we do or say that demonstrate that our heart is saying,

  29. God, no, I don't want to obey your law.

  30. I'm going to do this my way,

  31. and that my desires and this world are worth more glory than you.

  32. I think there are few things that turn our minds and our hearts away from God

  33. and towards sin more than sex.

  34. About sex and money, the writer Paul Tripp says,

  35. neither sex nor money can deliver the promises that we think they are making,

  36. and each area is more dangerous than we tend to think.

  37. Both function today and in the surrounding culture like spiritual solvements

  38. eating away at the very fabric of human community.

  39. He goes on to say that both have the perverse power to master your hearts,

  40. and in doing so, determine the direction of your lives.

  41. Sex in and of itself is not a bad thing,

  42. but a desire for sex, when God and his law and his will isn't at the center of it,

  43. can easily grow into addiction, into insanity,

  44. into a spiraling pit of sin,

  45. and it doesn't get much better when we think about other things.

  46. When we talk about money, when we talk about our work,

  47. I think that our hearts are very easy.

  48. They very easily make idols of anything or anyone,

  49. whether it's good or bad.

  50. I think more than anything else, sex and money has gripped the lives of our world,

  51. has gripped the hearts of our culture.

  52. I think it's sucking away at our souls, at the church.

  53. I think that the church can't escape.

  54. It is true for the church today.

  55. It's true for Watermark.

  56. It's true for the church in Thyatira.

  57. So, this is what we're going to do.

  58. I'm going to talk about the city briefly.

  59. We'll look at what God says is good.

  60. We'll look at things that God says is bad about the church.

  61. We'll try and figure out how they got there.

  62. I'm going to then ask, what about us?

  63. Do we do the same things?

  64. We're going to see what kind of judgment they have in store.

  65. But in the end, when the dust settles,

  66. I hope to show you where we find our hope.

  67. I hope to see that,

  68. I hope that you will see the cross at the end of this.

  69. I think it's very important that you listen to that part,

  70. because if you don't,

  71. it will just be half an hour of me beating you guys up

  72. and showing you where all the sin is in your heart.

  73. I think, you know, if you're not listening to the end,

  74. if you're not looking for the cross,

  75. then all that is pointless.

  76. Thyatira's letter is the longest one

  77. that Jesus writes to the seven churches.

  78. But incidentally, Thyatira was one of the smallest cities.

  79. You'll find it right now in modern Turkey,

  80. and Thyatira is in the middle of this long valley

  81. on the road to Pergamum.

  82. It was in the middle of a valley,

  83. and it wasn't very easy to defend.

  84. So invading armies that were trying to capture

  85. the bigger, wealthier Pergamum

  86. would always come and run over Thyatira

  87. on their way through.

  88. The city was burnt down and rebuilt

  89. and burnt down and rebuilt.

  90. And when Alexander the Great came through,

  91. and he had his little seat of power in Pergamum,

  92. he used Thyatira as a military barracks.

  93. It wasn't until about 190 B.C.

  94. when the Roman Empire expanded

  95. and peace came to the region.

  96. And we see that it took on an identity of its own.

  97. It began to develop industries,

  98. bronze, clothing,

  99. and the precious purple dyes

  100. that made royal robes.

  101. The industries grew to such an extent

  102. that historians actually marvel

  103. at the number of trade guilds

  104. that were found in the city.

  105. Really, a city with that number of trade guilds

  106. should have been much, much bigger.

  107. Because of that,

  108. Thyatira was a wealthy city.

  109. In Acts 16,

  110. we see the story of a lady from Thyatira,

  111. Lydia.

  112. We see that Paul goes and meets her in Philippi

  113. and by the river,

  114. and we see in Acts 16

  115. the story of her conversion.

  116. And we think that she might have been instrumental

  117. in planting the church in Thyatira.

  118. So this church.

  119. Let's look at the good things

  120. that God has to say.

  121. In verse 19, he says,

  122. I know your works,

  123. your love and faith and service

  124. and patient endurance,

  125. and that your latter works exceed the first.

  126. So far, so good.

  127. They're doing all the things

  128. that a church should do.

  129. They have love.

  130. They have faith.

  131. They're serving.

  132. And it's the kind of church

  133. that I would like to be in

  134. because they're growing.

  135. It's not that we're just going to have

  136. a little bit of love now

  137. and then we'll keep that forever.

  138. They've been growing.

  139. Their love has been increasing.

  140. Their faith is increasing.

  141. They're more willing to serve.

  142. The church is almost the opposite

  143. of the first church we looked at, Ephesus.

  144. You know, Ephesus, God berates them

  145. and tells them that

  146. you guys are so obsessed

  147. with right doctrine and orthodoxy

  148. that you've forgotten your first love.

  149. You've forgotten love and faith.

  150. But Thyatira hadn't.

  151. On love and faith,

  152. they were good.

  153. In verse 20, however,

  154. Jesus says,

  155. but this I have against you.

  156. And this is where the trouble begins

  157. because Jesus tells them,

  158. I've had it with you guys

  159. and your rampant sexual immorality.

  160. I'm tired of you guys

  161. repeatedly going to these idol feasts

  162. and eating food that's been sacrificed

  163. to idols.

  164. In Acts 15,

  165. a council of church leaders

  166. gathered in Jerusalem

  167. and they were there

  168. to settle a dispute.

  169. Now there was confusion

  170. about what was expected

  171. of Gentile believers

  172. when they came to faith.

  173. Some said that they had

  174. to be circumcised.

  175. Some said that they didn't.

  176. Some people,

  177. after they were converted,

  178. continued to live lives

  179. that they always had.

  180. Others went on

  181. and adopted, you know,

  182. the Jewish moral standards.

  183. And the council gathered

  184. to clear up this confusion.

  185. And so they said

  186. that circumcision

  187. was no longer required

  188. for believers,

  189. but they gave four things

  190. that believers were

  191. to stay away from

  192. as a mark of their salvation.

  193. The first three had to do

  194. with ceremonial purity.

  195. They were not supposed to

  196. eat animals

  197. that had been strangled.

  198. They weren't supposed

  199. to be in contact with blood.

  200. They weren't supposed

  201. to eat food sacrificed to idols.

  202. And they would stay away

  203. from sexual immorality.

  204. Of these four things,

  205. Thyatira had failed

  206. on two counts.

  207. I said earlier that Thyatira

  208. had a huge number

  209. of trade guilds.

  210. These were workers groups,

  211. kind of like a workers' union,

  212. except instead of

  213. membership fees and strikes,

  214. they had feasts

  215. where they would eat food

  216. that had been offered

  217. to various gods and idols.

  218. And after they were done

  219. with these feasts,

  220. they would feast

  221. on each other's bodies sexually.

  222. Being any kind of craftsman

  223. or tradesman in this city

  224. meant that either

  225. you were in these guilds

  226. and you took part

  227. in these activities,

  228. or you stood outside

  229. where you lost

  230. the benefits of membership.

  231. Members in the church

  232. in Thyatira

  233. were involved in these

  234. and the pagan worship

  235. they took part in.

  236. They traded their religious

  237. integrity for job security.

  238. John records Jesus' words.

  239. He says that

  240. you tolerate that woman,

  241. Jezebel.

  242. Their membership

  243. in the trade guilds

  244. wasn't their biggest crime.

  245. Jesus says that

  246. there's the woman,

  247. Jezebel,

  248. that was seducing

  249. God's people,

  250. that was tearing them away.

  251. He says that,

  252. yes,

  253. there's pressure

  254. to join these guilds

  255. from outside,

  256. but the problem

  257. is inside your church.

  258. There's this woman,

  259. Jezebel,

  260. and she is a false teacher

  261. in their midst.

  262. And to make it worse,

  263. she says that

  264. she's a prophetess.

  265. She's saying that

  266. the message that she has

  267. for the people

  268. is from God,

  269. that God is telling

  270. this church in Thyatira

  271. that they should

  272. be sexually immoral,

  273. that they should

  274. be eating

  275. this food,

  276. the food that's been

  277. sacrificed to idols.

  278. The sin of Thyatira

  279. was that

  280. while these lies

  281. were being spread

  282. that they did nothing

  283. about it,

  284. that they tolerated Jezebel,

  285. and they let her

  286. move into a position

  287. of leadership.

  288. Now,

  289. I don't think that

  290. this woman was

  291. actually called Jezebel.

  292. I don't know anybody

  293. who names their child that.

  294. Jezebel was a woman

  295. who we know of

  296. in the Old Testament

  297. in 1 and 2 Kings.

  298. She was the wife

  299. of King Ahab.

  300. She wasn't an Israelite.

  301. She came from Phoenicia.

  302. Her father,

  303. King Ethbaal,

  304. was named after

  305. the pagan gods.

  306. And so she came

  307. and married King Ahab,

  308. and her time

  309. in the royal court

  310. of Israel

  311. consisted of rounding up

  312. God's prophets

  313. and his priests

  314. and killing them,

  315. replacing them

  316. with her own prophets,

  317. with her own priests.

  318. She drew the nation

  319. of Israel

  320. out of its worship

  321. to God

  322. to the worship

  323. of these other,

  324. these idols,

  325. to worshiping idols

  326. and taking part

  327. in cult prostitution.

  328. In the end,

  329. she was punished

  330. by God.

  331. The story says

  332. that she fell out

  333. of a window,

  334. and when she hit

  335. the ground,

  336. she died instantly,

  337. and that her body

  338. was eaten up

  339. by dogs.

  340. All that was left

  341. were her feet.

  342. This is the kind

  343. of woman

  344. that was leading

  345. the church in Thyatira

  346. away from God.

  347. For Thyatira,

  348. Jezebel wasn't

  349. an outside force

  350. coming in.

  351. Jezebel was

  352. within the congregation.

  353. She was a leader

  354. there.

  355. You know,

  356. if they were like Smyrna,

  357. if the trouble

  358. was coming from outside,

  359. then their judgment

  360. probably wouldn't

  361. be so harsh.

  362. But they had allowed

  363. Jezebel to come

  364. into this position

  365. of leadership

  366. in their church

  367. and draw them

  368. away from the worship

  369. of God

  370. and turn them

  371. towards idols.

  372. The church in Thyatira

  373. brings a strong warning

  374. and a reminder to us

  375. that the enemy,

  376. that Satan,

  377. isn't just attacking us

  378. on the outside,

  379. but he's warring

  380. against us

  381. in our innermost beings,

  382. in our hearts.

  383. It's true for Thyatira.

  384. It's true for us.

  385. It's true for every person.

  386. Here.

  387. If Satan isn't

  388. attacking you

  389. on the outside,

  390. then he's probably

  391. attacking you

  392. on the inside.

  393. And if you don't

  394. sense him

  395. attacking you

  396. on either side,

  397. then maybe he sees

  398. that you're not

  399. worth attacking,

  400. that he's already

  401. had you completely.

  402. Jezebel is a deceiver,

  403. and she carries

  404. these characteristics

  405. into Thyatira

  406. because it's only

  407. by lies

  408. and untruths,

  409. by twisting

  410. what God

  411. had said,

  412. by twisting

  413. the truth

  414. about who God

  415. is and what

  416. the gospel

  417. is,

  418. that she could

  419. convince God's

  420. people to depart

  421. from what God

  422. had commanded them.

  423. You know,

  424. I think the things

  425. that she said

  426. wouldn't be too

  427. different from

  428. some things

  429. that we hear

  430. in the world

  431. today.

  432. You know,

  433. it could be that,

  434. you know what,

  435. your bodies

  436. and your souls

  437. are separate,

  438. that neither one

  439. has an effect

  440. on another.

  441. You know,

  442. do the things

  443. that you must

  444. in your flesh

  445. because it's only

  446. in your flesh.

  447. Your spirit

  448. won't be harmed.

  449. Or this lie,

  450. that the laws

  451. of the church

  452. are old,

  453. they're old-fashioned,

  454. they're traditional

  455. and intolerant,

  456. and they don't

  457. apply to us anymore.

  458. Or this lie,

  459. that you know what,

  460. God put these

  461. desires in you,

  462. and it's a sin

  463. not to go

  464. and satisfy them.

  465. God is out of touch

  466. to the world.

  467. If he'd been in the world

  468. and experienced

  469. these things,

  470. then maybe the laws

  471. would be a little bit

  472. different.

  473. Or we are more

  474. enlightened than

  475. Moses was,

  476. so we can allow

  477. for more things.

  478. Or,

  479. this one,

  480. Paul writes about it,

  481. that God's grace

  482. is big,

  483. and by sinning more,

  484. we make God's grace

  485. bigger,

  486. so we should sin

  487. to make God

  488. more beautiful.

  489. That's a lie.

  490. She would have

  491. told them that

  492. if you're in Christ,

  493. these pagan things

  494. have no effect on you.

  495. That actually,

  496. maybe,

  497. to know that your

  498. faith is real,

  499. you should get involved

  500. with the deep things

  501. of Satan,

  502. because then you'll know

  503. that you're truly

  504. separate,

  505. and you can truly resist,

  506. you've truly mastered

  507. your desires.

  508. Lies.

  509. Lies.

  510. And it's not an attack

  511. from the outside,

  512. it was from inside,

  513. it's like the poison

  514. apple in Snow White.

  515. In the outside,

  516. it's red,

  517. and beautiful,

  518. and perfect,

  519. but when you open it up,

  520. there's only death.

  521. Who was there

  522. to say no?

  523. Who was there

  524. in Thyatira

  525. to say

  526. that this is not right,

  527. that this woman

  528. is telling lies,

  529. that you guys

  530. need to repent

  531. and turn back

  532. to God?

  533. What you must understand

  534. is that in Thyatira,

  535. these things

  536. were totally normal.

  537. These were things

  538. that happened

  539. in the culture

  540. around them.

  541. If you went home today

  542. and you stood

  543. in your lift

  544. and you're going up

  545. and your neighbor

  546. was talking about

  547. how the meat

  548. at the idol feast

  549. was a little bit stringy,

  550. you might wonder

  551. what they're up to.

  552. If they then went on

  553. to complain

  554. or to rave

  555. about the sexual feast

  556. they had afterwards,

  557. I wouldn't blame you

  558. if you rushed

  559. to cover your kids' ears,

  560. because those are things

  561. that we don't see

  562. or expect today.

  563. But in Ephesus

  564. and Thyatira

  565. and Corinth

  566. in cities

  567. in that day and age,

  568. those things

  569. were very normal.

  570. They were as normal

  571. as paying taxes.

  572. Tolerance for sin

  573. is a very sneaky way

  574. of getting into our church.

  575. And often

  576. with sexual immorality

  577. it's very easy

  578. to go and shift the blame

  579. to the culture outside.

  580. It may be true,

  581. but we only succumb

  582. to sexual immorality

  583. because of the desires

  584. in our flesh

  585. and in our hearts.

  586. The culture

  587. and our flesh

  588. fight together

  589. against our spirit

  590. to turn us away

  591. from God

  592. towards sin.

  593. They tell us

  594. that what is the truth

  595. is a lie

  596. and that what God

  597. has said is forbidden

  598. is permissible.

  599. And I don't think

  600. things have changed

  601. too much

  602. in 2,000 years.

  603. When the church

  604. in Thyatira

  605. slipped on its sexual conduct,

  606. we do the same.

  607. And don't think

  608. that because we're here

  609. inside the church

  610. and God's fellowship

  611. of believers

  612. that we're exempt,

  613. that we're immune to this.

  614. Here's some numbers.

  615. Statistically,

  616. about 88%

  617. of singles

  618. in developed countries

  619. engage in premarital sex.

  620. In that church,

  621. in the church,

  622. that number drops

  623. to 80%.

  624. 80.

  625. 70% of men

  626. 18 to 35

  627. watch pornography

  628. regularly.

  629. That's the kind of statistic

  630. that seeps into the church.

  631. Studies have shown

  632. that 50% of pastors

  633. struggle

  634. with pornography.

  635. Something is wrong

  636. with our church,

  637. with the way

  638. we view God,

  639. when 40%

  640. of women

  641. going for abortions

  642. in the United States

  643. say that they're Christians,

  644. that they have a faith

  645. in God.

  646. Studies show

  647. that one in four marriages

  648. within the church

  649. experience domestic

  650. and sexual violence.

  651. And increasingly,

  652. more and more people

  653. in the church

  654. begin to teach

  655. that homosexuality

  656. is a part of God's will

  657. for marriage,

  658. family,

  659. and sex.

  660. In the church then,

  661. in the church now,

  662. sexual conduct

  663. is an issue.

  664. In 1 Corinthians 5,

  665. we see Paul berating

  666. the church

  667. for celebrating

  668. incest in its midst.

  669. They brought into the lie

  670. that freedom from sin

  671. meant they could do

  672. whatever they want.

  673. Now,

  674. don't look at Corinth

  675. and think that we're

  676. any better.

  677. Because pornography

  678. is as much a sin

  679. as incest is.

  680. Homosexual relations

  681. are sin

  682. as much as adultery

  683. is sin.

  684. And in God's eyes,

  685. emotional and sexual abuse

  686. are as much a sin

  687. as pedophilia.

  688. As I grow

  689. and I'm walking

  690. on this journey,

  691. I'm made more aware

  692. of how sinful

  693. and how broken I am.

  694. I don't have to look

  695. back very far

  696. to see a time

  697. when I was in a pit.

  698. On one side,

  699. pornography,

  700. on the other side,

  701. casual sex.

  702. It's not

  703. too many years ago

  704. that I emotionally

  705. abused my girlfriends

  706. to satisfy

  707. my sexual desires.

  708. I see every day

  709. how much my thoughts

  710. and my actions

  711. are torn apart

  712. by slavery

  713. to the flesh.

  714. I see it's only

  715. by grace

  716. that I'm able

  717. to pursue holiness

  718. and purity.

  719. The truth is

  720. that our sinful nature

  721. uses sex

  722. to make slaves of us.

  723. It wraps us in guilt

  724. and shame

  725. and it blinds us

  726. to a multitude

  727. of other things.

  728. It makes us,

  729. as Peter wrote,

  730. ineffective

  731. and unfruitful

  732. in the knowledge

  733. of Jesus Christ.

  734. The problem,

  735. however,

  736. is not with sex.

  737. Without a tire

  738. in much of the ancient world,

  739. the blame was shifted

  740. to livelihood.

  741. Sex is only a problem

  742. because we need to live.

  743. We need to eat

  744. and feed our families.

  745. If we're not

  746. in these guilds

  747. and taking part

  748. in these things,

  749. how are we going to tithe

  750. and support the church?

  751. Do we do the same

  752. in Hong Kong?

  753. Do we compromise

  754. our faith

  755. for our livelihood?

  756. I get to spend

  757. a lot of time

  758. around HKU.

  759. Students at Hong Kong

  760. University

  761. are incredibly pragmatic.

  762. They know that

  763. to get good grades,

  764. they need to study

  765. and they will study

  766. all day

  767. and all night.

  768. And they'll do that

  769. all the way

  770. through the semester

  771. and then they'll get

  772. to where exams

  773. are coming,

  774. which is going to be

  775. in a couple of weeks.

  776. And then they have

  777. Super Pass season.

  778. Super Pass is a phenomenon

  779. at Hong Kong University

  780. where there are

  781. different celebrations

  782. and different things

  783. that they do

  784. to, you know,

  785. get better exam grades.

  786. It usually involves

  787. sticking banners

  788. on your door.

  789. Sometimes it involves

  790. a pig

  791. and they have this ceremony

  792. where they get

  793. this roast pig

  794. and you get a big knife

  795. and you cut it

  796. and each person

  797. has a go cutting it

  798. and the idea is that

  799. if you cut all the way

  800. through the pig

  801. that you'll Super Pass

  802. your exams,

  803. that you'll be blessed

  804. and you'll get at least

  805. a 3.0 on your GPA.

  806. Now, I haven't met anyone

  807. who calls this

  808. a religious ceremony

  809. but to me

  810. it smells a lot

  811. like idolatry.

  812. Like saying that

  813. this pig

  814. and my ability

  815. to cut through it

  816. has an effect

  817. on how I'm going

  818. to do my exams.

  819. It has more effect

  820. on my exams

  821. than God.

  822. I think that we misplace

  823. our trust all the time

  824. and it's not just

  825. the students.

  826. I think we're all

  827. guilty of that.

  828. We do it in our feng shui

  829. to get the flow

  830. of money

  831. to our desks.

  832. You know,

  833. we do it when we

  834. throw Joss papers

  835. at wishing trees.

  836. We do it when we

  837. go under the bridge

  838. so that, you know,

  839. our wives can be blessed

  840. so they can have

  841. healthy children.

  842. You know,

  843. we do it when we

  844. put hope

  845. in what the horoscope

  846. says.

  847. When we buy

  848. a little money cat

  849. to stick in our doorway.

  850. When we think about

  851. the dates that we're

  852. getting married on

  853. or the colors

  854. that we're going to wear.

  855. I think without thinking

  856. we make idols

  857. of just about anything.

  858. We trust these things,

  859. these people,

  860. these rituals

  861. more than we trust God.

  862. And we don't have

  863. to say it out loud

  864. because our actions

  865. do that for us.

  866. They say that

  867. God isn't enough,

  868. that I need these things

  869. to trust in

  870. because they're just

  871. going to be that

  872. little extra

  873. that God can't do.

  874. What I'm saying

  875. is that the problem

  876. isn't with our livelihoods.

  877. It isn't with these rituals.

  878. It's not with sex.

  879. It's not with slipping morals.

  880. It's not our carnal desires

  881. with us.

  882. The problem's in our hearts.

  883. In our hearts,

  884. we don't trust

  885. and honor God.

  886. It was a case in Thyatira.

  887. The issue wasn't sex.

  888. It wasn't tolerating sin

  889. or false teachers.

  890. It was that their hearts

  891. were not on God.

  892. I know that's true.

  893. My problem wasn't sex.

  894. My problem was that

  895. my heart would rather

  896. serve my flesh

  897. than it would serve God.

  898. And Paul captures this.

  899. I love it in Romans 1

  900. because he says,

  901. although they knew God,

  902. they did not honor Him

  903. as God or give thanks to Him.

  904. They became futile

  905. in their thinking.

  906. Their foolish hearts

  907. were darkened.

  908. Claiming to be wise,

  909. they became fools.

  910. They exchanged the glory

  911. of an immortal God

  912. for images

  913. resembling mortal man,

  914. birds, animals,

  915. and creeping things.

  916. And so here we stand

  917. with the Thyatira in church.

  918. Their sexual immorality,

  919. their idol worship.

  920. And God comes before them.

  921. At the beginning it says

  922. that He has eyes

  923. like a flame of fire

  924. and feet like burnished bronze.

  925. It's not a nice image.

  926. It's not Jesus

  927. with white hair

  928. and white robes.

  929. Jesus is here

  930. and He means business.

  931. His burning eyes

  932. say that He sees

  933. and He searches their minds

  934. and their hearts

  935. and He knows

  936. the deepest part

  937. of their souls.

  938. And His feet

  939. like burnished bronze

  940. are not gentle.

  941. They're not feet

  942. for massaging.

  943. These are crushing feet

  944. and they're shining

  945. and reflecting.

  946. It's not enough

  947. that God sees our sin.

  948. He wants to show it

  949. to us.

  950. Of the letters

  951. that we see so far,

  952. the language of judgment

  953. isn't as strong

  954. as we see here

  955. in Thyatira.

  956. Unlike others,

  957. there's no ifs.

  958. Or, you know,

  959. maybes or warnings

  960. or if you repent.

  961. He says that

  962. I gave Jezebel time

  963. to repent

  964. but she refuses

  965. and behold,

  966. watch what I'm going to do.

  967. I will throw her

  968. onto a sickbed.

  969. What was once

  970. her den of pleasure

  971. is going to become

  972. a morgue.

  973. I'm going to kill

  974. her children.

  975. I'm going to punish

  976. those who follow her.

  977. Jezebel's judgment

  978. is not optional.

  979. She had a chance

  980. to repent.

  981. That judgment

  982. is coming.

  983. And Jesus is coming

  984. with His fiery eyes

  985. and His bronze boots.

  986. But it's not all trouble.

  987. He tells others that,

  988. you know,

  989. if you do not repent,

  990. I'll throw you in tribulation.

  991. So if you do repent,

  992. that won't happen to you.

  993. There's still a chance

  994. to return

  995. to Jesus.

  996. It says at the end

  997. of the letter that

  998. a holy and righteous one,

  999. Jesus,

1000. is going to be given

  1001. a bronze rod

  1002. and He will rule

  1003. with that rod.

  1004. The word rule here

1005. is a lot like shepherding,

  1006. but instead of

  1007. a wooden staff,

  1008. it's an iron rod

  1009. and what's left

  1010. in its wake

  1011. is broken pots.

  1012. What about those

  1013. who stay away?

  1014. What about those

  1015. who have kept

  1016. themselves pure?

  1017. Jesus says

  1018. that I don't lay on you

  1019. any other burden.

1020. I do not lay on you

  1021. any other burden,

  1022. which makes me wonder

  1023. what is the burden

  1024. they already have?

  1025. The burden of living

  1026. in a church

  1027. that is being rotten

  1028. from the inside

  1029. by sexual immorality,

  1030. the burden of watching

  1031. those that they love

  1032. punished

  1033. for their sinfulness.

  1034. The challenge seems clear

1035. that God is calling them

  1036. to call their friends,

  1037. to call their members,

1038. their family in the church

  1039. to repentance.

  1040. Is that you?

  1041. I mean,

  1042. I wonder if,

1043. and I struggle with this,

  1044. but asking

  1045. and calling people

  1046. to repentance.

  1047. It's not easy

1048. to go to your friends

  1049. and say,

  1050. dude,

  1051. that's messed up.

  1052. You know,

1053. you need to get right

  1054. with God.

1055. That is going to destroy

  1056. your life.

  1057. But I wonder if,

  1058. as a church,

  1059. are we doing that

  1060. in our community groups,

  1061. with our friends?

1062. He who has an ear,

  1063. let him hear

  1064. what the Spirit says

  1065. to the churches.

  1066. That's verse 29.

  1067. It's not long

  1068. after this letter,

  1069. actually,

  1070. less than 100 years

  1071. after this letter

  1072. was written,

1073. that there was no sign

  1074. of a church

  1075. ever having existed

  1076. in Thyatira.

  1077. We don't know

  1078. what happened

  1079. to the church.

1080. I have nothing to say

1081. how they met their end,

  1082. but if Jezebel's story

1083. is anything to go by,

  1084. that wasn't a pretty ending.

  1085. And I imagine

  1086. a conversation happening

  1087. in a nearby town.

  1088. Hey,

  1089. do you remember

  1090. Lydia's church?

  1091. Lydia?

  1092. Yeah, yeah,

  1093. you know,

  1094. the rich lady

  1095. from Thyatira.

  1096. Yeah, yeah, yeah,

  1097. I remember her.

  1098. Whatever happened

  1099. to that church?

  1100. Whatever happened

  1101. to those people?

  1102. Because, you know,

  1103. those guys,

1104. they knew how to love.

  1105. They knew what

  1106. faithfulness was about.

  1107. Yeah, but, you know,

1108. I always felt something off

  1109. whenever I hung out

  1110. with them.

  1111. I wonder if God

  1112. saw that too.

  1113. In verse 23,

  1114. it says,

  1115. all the churches

  1116. will know

  1117. that I am He

  1118. who searches minds

  1119. and hearts.

  1120. It's not enough

  1121. that they had

  1122. these good things,

  1123. that they had love

  1124. and faithfulness,

  1125. that they persevered,

  1126. because God is looking

  1127. at their hearts.

1128. He's looking at your hearts,

1129. because out of the heart,

  1130. because the heart

1131. is a seat for the soul.

  1132. It's where worship

  1133. comes from.

  1134. It's where sin

  1135. comes from.

  1136. And what God wants

1137. to see out of our hearts

  1138. is repentance.

1139. I think for us today,

  1140. we can fall into

  1141. one of four categories.

  1142. Either we're outside

  1143. the church.

1144. We're not part of this

  1145. fellowship of believers.

  1146. Or we could be

  1147. the Jezebel

  1148. in the church,

  1149. tearing people away

  1150. from God's law,

  1151. lying to them

  1152. and saying that

  1153. God has no authority

  1154. to speak into

1155. these areas of our lives.

  1156. Third,

1157. we could be the people

  1158. who are deceived,

  1159. who forget what

  1160. they've been taught

1161. and follow this new teaching,

  1162. mixing our faith

1163. with faith in something else,

  1164. worshiping God,

  1165. but mostly trusting

  1166. in something else.

  1167. Or,

1168. we could be the innocent ones.

  1169. We don't have idolatry

  1170. in our hearts,

  1171. but we tolerate

  1172. the intolerable

  1173. in others.

  1174. and we avoid sin,

  1175. but by tolerating

  1176. the sin in others,

  1177. are also guilty.

  1178. The truth is about

  1179. these people

  1180. and about us

  1181. is that no one

  1182. is righteous,

1183. that we are all guilty,

  1184. that we can't keep

  1185. his works,

  1186. that we all deserve

  1187. judgment,

  1188. that we deserve

  1189. the sickbed,

  1190. the iron rod.

1191. We deserve to be smashed

  1192. like that broken pottery.

  1193. Who can stand

  1194. before God?

  1195. Who can save us?

  1196. The passage says

  1197. that we are judged

  1198. according to our actions.

  1199. Well, clearly,

  1200. love and faith

  1201. and perseverance

  1202. aren't the actions

  1203. that will judge us.

  1204. I think what God

  1205. is looking for

  1206. is repentance.

  1207. The only way

1208. that we can be saved

  1209. is through Jesus

  1210. and the only way

  1211. that we see Jesus

  1212. is by repenting,

  1213. by turning away

  1214. from our sin,

  1215. from our faith

  1216. in other things,

  1217. from our sexual immorality

  1218. and turning

  1219. to Jesus.

  1220. I think repentance

  1221. is key

  1222. because it says

  1223. that Jezebel

  1224. was given time

  1225. to repent,

  1226. but she didn't.

  1227. I think that

  1228. every moment

  1229. that we are alive

  1230. is a moment

  1231. of grace.

  1232. It's a moment

1233. that God has given us

  1234. to repent.

  1235. And every moment

  1236. we have

  1237. is a moment

  1238. of grace

  1239. that God gives us

  1240. to repent.

  1241. In Isaiah chapter 30,

    Isaiah 30 chapter mention

  1242. we see a picture

  1243. of this repentance,

  1244. of God's desire

  1245. for our repentance.

  1246. That's where the imagery

  1247. of these broken pots

  1248. comes from.

  1249. We see people

  1250. who have turned away

  1251. from God

  1252. and God is saying

  1253. that they're preaching

  1254. illusions

  1255. as prophecy

  1256. and he says

  1257. that because

  1258. of their perverseness

  1259. that God's judgment

  1260. is coming.

1261. It says in the passage

  1262. that these pots,

  1263. these clay pots

  1264. will be smashed

  1265. and broken.

  1266. They'll be smashed

  1267. and broken

  1268. to the point

1269. where not a single piece

  1270. can carry a drop

  1271. of water.

  1272. And he calls him

  1273. to repent

  1274. and he says,

  1275. I long

  1276. to be gracious

  1277. to you.

1278. I want to show you

  1279. my mercy.

  1280. I'm pulling you.

  1281. I want your heart

  1282. to turn away

  1283. from your sin,

  1284. from your desires

  1285. and to face me,

  1286. to look at me.

  1287. I think

  1288. repentance

  1289. isn't easy.

  1290. I've been reading

  1291. the Bible in French

  1292. so I grew up

  1293. speaking French

  1294. in a French school

  1295. but I thought

1296. if I read it in French

  1297. then I wouldn't skip

  1298. over the passages

  1299. that I thought I knew.

1300. And as I was reading Mark

  1301. where we'd see repentance

  1302. it says

  1303. changement radical.

  1304. It says that

  1305. there's going to be

  1306. a radical change.

  1307. When Jesus is preaching

  1308. he says

  1309. change radically

  1310. because the kingdom

  1311. of God is coming.

  1312. It's not a course adjustment.

  1313. It's not tuning a strain

  1314. that's a little bit off.

  1315. It's standing up

  1316. and turning

  1317. away completely.

  1318. You know,

  1319. for me

  1320. it wasn't enough

  1321. to put away

  1322. the emotional abuse

  1323. from our relationships

  1324. and think,

  1325. okay,

  1326. that's just a little bit

  1327. of adjustment.

  1328. No.

  1329. It meant changing

  1330. radically the way

  1331. I engaged

  1332. my relationships

  1333. and what I did

  1334. with my body

  1335. with my heart.

  1336. One of the things

  1337. I've been convicted of

  1338. is that I'm slow

  1339. to repent.

  1340. That I would rather

  1341. wallow in my sin

  1342. because I'm too proud

  1343. to say that I'm a sinner.

  1344. That I'm too proud

1345. to say that I need Jesus.

  1346. Because repentance

  1347. is costly.

  1348. It may cost us

  1349. embarrassment.

  1350. It may hurt

  1351. relationships around us.

  1352. Turning away

  1353. from our sin

  1354. and turning to God

  1355. could cost us

  1356. our homes,

  1357. our jobs,

  1358. our families.

  1359. But I think

  1360. it's worth it.

  1361. I think it's worth it

  1362. because Jesus died

  1363. on the cross.

  1364. Because in repentance

  1365. and turning to Christ

1366. and turning to his cross,

  1367. we win Jesus.

  1368. We win his righteousness.

  1369. We put our faith

1370. in one that will never fail.

  1371. Not in a pig,

  1372. not in humans,

  1373. not in a book

  1374. of the future.

  1375. And we place ourselves

  1376. in front of someone

  1377. who will satisfy

  1378. us completely.

  1379. That will satisfy us

  1380. more than money

  1381. or sex,

  1382. more than family

  1383. or work

  1384. or good grades.

  1385. repentance.

  1386. Repentance

  1387. turns us

  1388. and puts us

  1389. before one

  1390. who has the power

  1391. to forgive sins.

  1392. One has the power

  1393. to secure our eternity

  1394. with God

  1395. by defeating death

  1396. and defeating Satan.

  1397. I think repentance

  1398. is good news

  1399. because repentance

  1400. is not baseless

  1401. but it's in a gospel

  1402. that's already complete.

  1403. The gospel says

  1404. that like the church

  1405. in Thyatira,

  1406. that we are broken

  1407. and rotten.

  1408. In fact,

  1409. we're more sinful

  1410. than we probably

  1411. think we are.

  1412. The gospel says

  1413. that there's judgment

  1414. coming,

  1415. that we can't escape.

  1416. The gospel says

  1417. that when we repent

  1418. that Jesus forgives us.

1419. Or the gospel also says

  1420. that forgiveness

  1421. isn't free.

  1422. It isn't cheap.

1423. It's not a pat on the back

  1424. and away you go.

1425. There's still an iron rod.

  1426. There's still pots

  1427. to be smashed.

1428. And that's what we see

  1429. on the cross.

  1430. We see the punishment

  1431. for our rebellion

  1432. against God.

  1433. For tolerating sin.

  1434. For preaching on truth.

  1435. For trusting idols

  1436. instead of Him.

  1437. Because Jesus takes that

1438. on the cross for us.

  1439. Jesus is a shepherd

  1440. with the iron staff.

  1441. But Jesus,

  1442. for those who believe,

1443. is also the broken pottery.

  1444. He was apathitira

  1445. for us,

  1446. for our community groups,

  1447. for me.

  1448. Jesus,

  1449. the shepherd

  1450. with the iron staff,

  1451. is also

  1452. the broken pottery.

  1453. Let's pray.

  1454. Let's pray.

  1455. Father God,

  1456. I confess

  1457. that

  1458. we love sin

1459. more than we love you.

  1460. That our hearts

  1461. are rebellious.

  1462. Father,

  1463. forgive us.

  1464. Protect us

  1465. from the lies

  1466. that pull us

  1467. away from you.

  1468. Show us

  1469. where we need

  1470. to repent.

  1471. show us

  1472. the people

  1473. that we should

  1474. call out for

  1475. and call them

  1476. to repentance

  1477. and their brothers

  1478. and sisters

  1479. in the church.

  1480. Show us

  1481. the cross.

  1482. Show us

  1483. how you are

  1484. the God

  1485. that took

  1486. our punishment

  1487. for us.

  1488. That you are

  1489. the broken pot.

  1490. Father,

  1491. show us

  1492. that

  1493. help us

  1494. to believe

  1495. that your

  1496. holy love

  1497. is big enough.

  1498. That your

  1499. holiness,

  1500. your holy

  1501. wrath

  1502. against our

  1503. sin

  1504. is taken

  1505. by Christ.

  1506. Father,

  1507. help us

  1508. to be people

  1509. who are more

  1510. aware of our

  1511. sin

  1512. and see

  1513. how beautiful

  1514. you are.

  1515. Lord,

  1516. help us

  1517. to repent

  1518. and to turn

  1519. away from

  1520. the desires

  1521. of our

  1522. hearts

  1523. and the

  1524. lies

  1525. of the

  1526. world

  1527. into you.

  1528. Father,

  1529. I thank you

  1530. and I

  1531. rejoice

  1532. that you

  1533. have saved

  1534. me,

  1535. that you

  1536. have saved

  1537. us,

  1538. that we

  1539. have today

  1540. people who

  1541. have done

  1542. that and we

  1543. get to see

  1544. their baptism,

  1545. seeing them

  1546. dying to sin

  1547. and coming

  1548. alive in you.

  1549. Jesus,

  1550. we love you

  1551. and it's

  1552. your holy

  1553. and precious

  1554. name that

  1555. we pray.

  1556. Amen.
