  1. Good morning.

  2. For anyone who doesn't know me, my name is Eric Scott.

  3. I'm the youth director here at Watermark Church.

  4. As most of you know, I got engaged recently.

  5. And contrary to any crazy rumors you may have heard,

  6. she's not actually working at the church.

  7. The last few weeks, we've been looking at the letters

  8. to the churches in Revelation.

  9. There's seven letters to seven different churches.

  10. Each of them has a unique set of circumstances,

  11. unique issues and trials that it is facing,

  12. and unique ways that it is responding to these trials.

  13. And today we're looking, as you just heard, at the church in Sardis.

  14. And what we're going to see today is that although the church at Sardis

  15. had a reputation of being alive, of being strong,

  16. actually it was dead.

  17. And we need to examine ourselves to see whether the same is true of us.

  18. So the first thing I want us to see about this church

  19. is that appearances aren't everything.

  20. Appearances aren't everything.

  21. Pretty much every other church that we've looked at so far

  22. has some really serious issues going on within the church,

  23. but God finds something positive to say about each of them.

  24. We looked at the church at Ephesus,

  25. and they had lost their first love of God,

  26. but they endured through trials,

  27. and they wouldn't stand up, or they wouldn't tolerate false teachers.

  28. The church at Pergamum,

  29. they tolerated false teachers,

  30. and they had sexual immorality going on in the church,

  31. but they held fast their confession of Jesus' name,

  32. even to the point of death.

  33. Last week we looked at the church in Thyatira,

  34. and there was a false teacher they allowed into the church

  35. that led the church into sexual immorality.

  36. And there were major issues going on there,

  37. and they were eating food sacrificed to idols,

  38. but God praises them for their love,

  39. for their faith,

  40. for their service,

  41. and for their endurance.

  42. Each of these churches had major serious issues going on,

  43. but each of these churches had something going for them

  44. that God could look at and say,

  45. you're doing this well.

  46. See this area where you're doing well?

  47. Keep pushing on in that area.

  48. And today we come to a church

  49. where if you were to look at them from the outside,

  50. you would think this church has it going on.

  51. This church is alive.

  52. This church has none of these big issues

  53. that the other churches have,

  54. and yet they're dead.

  55. You know, God comes,

  56. and he talks to the church at Sardis in this letter.

  57. He doesn't complain about sexual immorality.

  58. He doesn't complain about false teachers.

  59. He doesn't complain about eating food sacrificed to idols.

  60. You know, they have this reputation of being alive.

  61. If they were around today,

  62. their pastor would be invited

  63. to all of the big conferences

  64. because he is the expert

  65. on how to build a healthy, lively church.

  66. If he wrote this book called

  67. Building an Alive Church,

  68. Building the Living Church,

  69. maybe that could be the title,

  70. Building the Living Church.

  71. You know, seminary students would go out

  72. and they would buy it

  73. and they would read it

  74. and they would discuss it with their friends

  75. because this guy is the expert.

  76. His church has got it going on.

  77. They've got this reputation

  78. as being a church that is alive,

  79. and yet despite all their appearances,

  80. the church is dead.

  81. Even though everything outside looks great,

  82. there's death inside.

  83. It's like Jesus used the analogy one time about tombs.

  84. He said, you know, you're whitewashed tombs.

  85. You're painted and fresh and pretty on the outside,

  86. and inside you're full of dead men's bones.

  87. And that's the picture that we get

  88. when we look at this church in Sardis.

  89. Everyone else is deceived

  90. concerning their spiritual health.

  91. But the scarier thing

  92. is that most likely they themselves

  93. are deceived concerning their spiritual health.

  94. Nowhere in this letter to the church at Sardis

  95. does Jesus come and say,

  96. hey, I can't believe you guys are lying to everyone

  97. about what's really going on in your church.

  98. He doesn't rebuke them

  99. for trying to trick other churches

  100. into thinking everything's great with them

  101. when it's not.

  102. Every indication in this letter

  103. would lead us to believe

  104. that they themselves

  105. believe the same things about themselves

  106. that everyone else believed.

  107. They looked at the church

  108. and they said, there's no false teachers here.

  109. There's no sexual immorality here.

  110. There's no food offered to idols

  111. that's being eaten by the people here.

  112. We've got it together.

  113. And he says, there's a deeper issue.

  114. There's a bigger issue

  115. that you've missed out on.

  116. And because you're focusing

  117. on the appearances

  118. and on the outside

  119. and on your behavior,

  120. you think you're alive.

  121. You think you have it all together

  122. when in reality,

  123. you're dead.

  124. You're a whitewashed tomb.

  125. You're pretty on the outside,

  126. but you're dead on the inside.

  127. You know, appearances

  128. don't tell us

  129. of true health.

  130. It's really easy

  131. to look at ourselves

  132. or at our churches

  133. and assume that

  134. because certain things are going on,

  135. they are healthy.

  136. Right?

  137. Like, think about it.

  138. With our churches,

  139. there are certain things

  140. that if we look at a church,

  141. we think that church is healthy.

  142. Like, numbers.

  143. I can't tell you

  144. how many times

  145. I've had a conversation

  146. with someone

  147. where I tell them,

  148. oh, I'm working at Watermark.

  149. And they're like,

  150. oh, how old is Watermark now?

  151. And I say, oh, you know,

  152. we're four years old.

  153. And they say,

  154. and how big are you guys now?

  155. And I tell them,

  156. and they say,

  157. oh, that's great.

  158. God's doing great things there.

  159. No question about, like,

  160. what are you guys

  161. teaching about Jesus?

  162. No question about,

  163. do you guys love

  164. the lost in your community?

  165. No question about anything

  166. other than,

  167. how big are you?

  168. Awesome.

  169. And we have this philosophy

  170. that, you know,

  171. living things grow.

  172. If it's healthy,

  173. it's going to grow,

  174. which in some sense

  175. may be true.

  176. But as Tobin reminded me once,

  177. weeds grow.

  178. And oftentimes faster

  179. than the plants

  180. that you actually want

  181. in your garden.

  182. Other things we look at,

  183. buildings.

  184. I was at a church

  185. in the States one time.

  186. this church had spent

  187. tens of millions

  188. of U.S. dollars

  189. building a new auditorium

  190. for them to hold

  191. their Sunday services in.

  192. And this money

  193. that they had spent,

  194. they didn't have.

  195. They had gone into

  196. massive debt

  197. that the church

  198. was having lots

  199. of trouble paying off.

  200. The gospel wasn't being

  201. preached there faithfully.

  202. The church had sacrificed

  203. their ability

  204. to reach out

  205. to the community

  206. because they were crippled

  207. by the debt

  208. that they had

  209. from this new auditorium.

  210. and one day

  211. this guest preacher

  212. comes in,

  213. a very well-respected guy.

  214. He gets up

  215. to start preaching

  216. and he opens the sermon

  217. by saying,

  218. you know,

  219. I can tell just by

  220. looking at this building

  221. that God is doing

  222. great things here.

  223. He looked at

  224. the external appearances.

  225. He looked at

  226. the facilities

  227. and judged

  228. how God was working

  229. at the church

  230. based on that

  231. and had a totally

  232. wrong judgment

  233. about what was happening

  234. because he was looking

  235. at the wrong thing.

  236. Programs,

  237. we think the more

  238. that's going on

  239. at the church,

  240. the healthier that church is,

  241. the better that church is.

  242. The music,

  243. does the music

  244. put me in the right mood

  245. to worship,

  246. to connect with God?

  247. We look at all

  248. these different things

  249. to determine

  250. whether a church

  251. is healthy or not,

  252. but are they

  253. the right things?

  254. And then personally,

  255. we look at ourselves

  256. and we try and figure out

  257. how am I doing

  258. in my walk with God?

  259. Maybe we look at

  260. church attendance.

  261. You know,

  262. I've been at church

  263. every week

  264. for the last month.

  265. I'm doing great.

  266. Or church involvement.

  267. You know,

  268. they wouldn't have asked me

  269. to sing in the choir

  270. if I wasn't doing okay

  271. in my relationship

  272. with God.

  273. It's scary to me

  274. the times in my life

  275. that I've like known

  276. that there are issues

  277. in my relationship

  278. with God

  279. that I need to deal with.

  280. And I brush them off

  281. because I'm like,

  282. you know,

  283. they asked me to preach

  284. this week

  285. and they wouldn't ask me

  286. to preach

  287. if I was really

  288. that messed up, right?

  289. If we're looking

  290. at our service,

  291. we're looking

  292. at the wrong place.

  293. We're looking

  294. at appearances.

  295. We're looking at

  296. what other people

  297. think about us,

  298. about our reputation,

  299. rather than this primary,

  300. most important thing.

  301. Maybe we look at

  302. obedience to God's commands.

  303. You know,

  304. I'm not sleeping

  305. with my girlfriend,

  306. so I must have

  307. something good

  308. going for me with God.

  309. I'm not robbing the banks.

  310. My relationship

  311. with God must be okay.

  312. Or the opinions

  313. of others.

  314. We know something's

  315. messed up

  316. in our relationship

  317. with God,

  318. but someone comes up

  319. to us and they say,

  320. you know,

  321. you're a really

  322. strong Christian

  323. and you encourage

  324. and inspire me

  325. to follow Christ more.

  326. And we think,

  327. eh,

  328. I can't be doing

  329. that bad, right?

  330. It's scary to me

  331. the number of times

  332. that's happened

  333. with me

  334. where I know

  335. something is messed up

  336. in my heart

  337. and someone comes up

  338. and they're like,

  339. you know,

  340. you're a really

  341. strong Christian.

  342. You encourage me.

  343. You inspire me

  344. to follow God more.

  345. And I think to myself,

  346. if they say that about me,

  347. I can't really be

  348. that messed up, right?

  349. The problem is,

  350. while all of these

  351. things are good,

  352. while numbers in a church,

  353. it's great to have

  354. a big church.

  355. Or great to have

  356. good facilities

  357. in your church.

  358. Great to have programs.

  359. Great to go to church.

  360. I'm not saying

  361. don't go to church.

  362. It's great to be involved

  363. when you're at church.

  364. But none of these things

  365. are the primary thing

  366. that indicates

  367. spiritual health

  368. in a church

  369. or in us

  370. as individuals.

  371. There's something

  372. bigger.

  373. There's something

  374. more important.

  375. And that's Christ.

  376. We need to look

  377. at Jesus

  378. and our relationship

  379. with him

  380. to determine

  381. spiritual health

  382. for us as individuals

  383. and as churches.

  384. If a church

  385. has lots of numbers

  386. and has great facilities

  387. and has dynamic

  388. speakers

  389. but doesn't teach

  390. about Jesus,

  391. it's dead.

  392. If we're going

  393. to church

  394. every week

  395. and we're involved

  396. in church

  397. and we're singing

  398. in the choir

  399. and we're playing

  400. in the band,

  401. we're teaching

  402. Sunday school

  403. but we aren't

  404. loving Jesus,

  405. we're dead.

  406. Even if we're

  407. following all the rules,

  408. even if we're doing

  409. everything right,

  410. even if we're putting

  411. our money in the offering

  412. every week,

  413. if we miss out

  414. on a relationship

  415. with Jesus,

  416. if we miss out

  417. on the gospel,

  418. the fact that we're

  419. sinners that have

  420. separated ourselves

  421. from God,

  422. that we desperately

  423. need Jesus

  424. to forgive us,

  425. to restore us

  426. to that relationship

  427. with God,

  428. we can have

  429. everything right

  430. on the outside.

  431. All our appearances

  432. can be great

  433. and in reality

  434. we're nothing more

  435. than a tomb,

  436. painted white

  437. so it looks nice,

  438. full of dead men's

  439. bones inside.

  440. Appearances

  441. aren't everything.

  442. The second thing

  443. I want us to see

  444. from this church

  445. at Sardis

  446. is that assumptions

  447. are deadly.

  448. Assumptions

  449. are deadly.

  450. Now there's

  451. not actually a lot

  452. that we know

  453. about this church

  454. at Sardis

  455. so a lot of

  456. what I'm going to say

  457. today is sort of

  458. somewhat speculation

  459. based off

  460. pretty,

  461. I think,

  462. good guesses

  463. based on what we see

  464. here.

  465. But we do know

  466. a little bit

  467. about the city

  468. of Sardis

  469. and one thing

  470. that we know

  471. about the city

  472. of Sardis

  473. is that it was

  474. a very strategic

  475. military city.

  476. It was built

  477. up on top

  478. of a hill

  479. and sort of

  480. the city

  481. went down

  482. into the valley

  483. but on top

  484. of this hill

  485. they had a fortress

  486. that no attacking

  487. army could get into.

  488. They had the high ground,

  489. they had a strong

  490. building on top

  491. of it

  492. and to make it

  493. easier to defend

  494. one side

  495. of this hill

  496. was a cliff

  497. that was so steep

  498. that no one

  499. could climb up it

  500. which meant

  501. that even when

  502. they were under attack

  503. they had the high ground,

  504. they had this great

  505. building to keep

  506. them safe

  507. and they only

  508. had to defend

  509. against two or three sides

  510. not in every direction

  511. at once.

  512. It was a very

  513. strategic military city

  514. but the problem

  515. is twice,

  516. not once in their history

  517. but twice in their history

  518. about 200 years

  519. or so apart

  520. from each other

  521. their strongest point

  522. became their weakest point

  523. on two different occasions.

  524. You'd think they would have

  525. learned after the first time

  526. but they didn't.

  527. They were under attack

  528. the first time

  529. by the Persians

  530. the second time

  531. by the Greeks.

  532. They were under attack

  533. and the attacking army

  534. brought all their forces

  535. up against the front gate

  536. of the fortress

  537. and started attacking

  538. and attacking

  539. and attacking

  540. and the people

  541. that were in the city

  542. at the time

  543. defended against

  544. this front gate

  545. and while they were

  546. being attacked

  547. at the front gate

  548. a couple of attackers

  549. climbed up

  550. this unclimbable cliff

  551. under the cover

  552. of darkness

  553. snuck through the fortress

  554. opened up the front gate

  555. from the inside

  556. and let their troops in

  557. and the first time

  558. it happens

  559. it's understandable

  560. you think no one

  561. can climb the cliff

  562. but 200 years later

  563. the exact same thing

  564. happened.

  565. You think that they

  566. would have learned

  567. just leave one guy

  568. back there to look

  569. and make sure

  570. they're not climbing

  571. up the cliff.

  572. They didn't learn

  573. their lesson.

  574. This point

  575. that they thought

  576. was their strongest point

  577. their best wall

  578. of defense

  579. this cliff

  580. that no one

  581. can get up

  582. turned out to be

  583. their biggest weakness

  584. because they left it

  585. completely undefended

  586. and they allowed

  587. the attackers

  588. to get in

  589. through their backs

  590. without them noticing

  591. because they were

  592. so distracted

  593. by the fighting

  594. up front.

  595. And I think

  596. there's a really

  597. good reason

  598. to believe

  599. that the church

  600. at Sardis

  601. was going through

  602. a similar experience

  603. to those soldiers.

  604. Looking at the other

  605. letters that we've

  606. been reading

  607. there's good reason

  608. to believe

  609. that there were

  610. attacks and temptations

  611. coming from every side.

  612. False teachers

  613. sexual immorality

  614. other stuff

  615. from the world

  616. just coming at them

  617. saying come

  618. follow

  619. join in.

  620. And like I said

  621. there's nothing

  622. in this letter

  623. indicating that

  624. they were doing

  625. any of that stuff.

  626. They were probably

  627. doing a good job

  628. fighting against

  629. the false teachers

  630. at least somewhat.

  631. They were probably

  632. doing a good job

  633. fighting against

  634. sexual immorality.

  635. But the problem

  636. is they put

  637. their primary focus

  638. on these things

  639. rather than on

  640. maintaining a

  641. relationship with Christ.

  642. And as they did

  643. this well

  644. as they said

  645. hey we're sexually

  646. pure

  647. yes

  648. they began

  649. to find their

  650. identity

  651. in these

  652. external behaviors

  653. rather than

  654. in their

  655. relationship

  656. with Christ.

  657. Satan kept

  658. them distracted

  659. by these

  660. things that

  661. seemed to be

  662. big issues

  663. at the front gates

  664. and subtly

  665. crept in the back

  666. and crumbled

  667. their relationship

  668. with Christ

  669. because they

  670. were so distracted

  671. by these

  672. other issues.

  673. And because of that

  674. they were able

  675. to maintain

  676. this appearance

  677. of being alive

  678. when in reality

  679. the life

  680. was slowly

  681. falling

  682. and fading

  683. out of the church.

  684. And this is a

  685. big issue

  686. in the church

  687. even today.

  688. You know

  689. back in the

  690. late 1900s

  691. there was a

  692. group of

  693. pastors

  694. and Christian

  695. leaders in

  696. America

  697. who looked

  698. around at

  699. the moral

  700. scene in

  701. America

  702. and said

  703. this is a

  704. mess.

  705. We need to

  706. stand up

  707. for proper

  708. morals.

  709. And they

  710. got together

  711. and they

  712. formed some

  713. groups.

  714. You've

  715. probably heard

  716. of them

  717. things like

  718. the moral

  719. majority

  720. the religious

  721. right.

  722. And they

  723. said we

  724. need to

  725. stand up

  726. for what's

  727. right.

  728. They said

  729. we need to

  730. fight against

  731. things like

  732. abortion or

  733. sexual promiscuity

  734. that's coming

  735. up all across

  736. our nation.

  737. And while I'm

  738. all about

  739. standing up

  740. for morality

  741. the problem

  742. with this

  743. group is

  744. that as

  745. they did

  746. this a

  747. lot of

  748. times they

  749. would implicitly

  750. spread the

  751. message that

  752. if you do

  753. these things

  754. that is what

  755. makes you a

  756. Christian.

  757. You are a

  758. Christian not

  759. because you

  760. love Jesus

  761. but because

  762. you rally

  763. against the

  764. doctors who

  765. perform abortions.

  766. You are a

  767. Christian not

  768. because you

  769. love Jesus

  770. but because

  771. you vote

  772. for the

  773. right

  774. presidential

  775. candidate.

  776. And these

  777. leaders

  778. implicitly

  779. spread the

  780. message that

  781. Christianity is

  782. more about

  783. what you

  784. do than

  785. it is about

  786. loving Jesus.

  787. It's more

  788. about what

  789. you do than

  790. about who

  791. you are.

  792. And it's

  793. led to

  794. my generation

  795. being brought

  796. up believing

  797. that Christianity

  798. is about

  799. our actions

  800. and what we

  801. do and

  802. who we

  803. hate and

  804. not about

  805. loving Jesus.

  806. And now

  807. don't get me

  808. wrong I'm not

  809. saying we

  810. shouldn't stand

  811. for morality

  812. but look at

  813. the fruits that

  814. have come from

  815. this.

  816. There are in

  817. the states

  818. today there

  819. are so many

  820. Christians who

  821. are looking to

  822. prominent Mormon

  823. leaders for

  824. spiritual and

  825. moral leadership

  826. because these

  827. guys stand for

  828. the same morals

  829. that Christians

  830. stand for.

  831. When fundamentally

  832. they believe

  833. different things

  834. about the

  835. identity of

  836. who God

  837. is and we

  838. shouldn't be

  839. looking to

  840. them for

  841. spiritual

  842. leadership.

  843. And now I

  844. know that's

  845. one extreme of

  846. the pendulum and

  847. there's another

  848. extreme of the

  849. pendulum maybe

  850. that would say

  851. forget about

  852. morals it's just

  853. about a

  854. relationship with

  855. Christ so we

  856. can do whatever

  857. we want.

  858. God's going to

  859. forgive us

  860. anyway so let's

  861. go sleep around.

  862. Let's go do what

  863. we want and not

  864. worry about the

  865. consequences and

  866. I'm absolutely not

  867. advocating that.

  868. The Bible says

  869. that God has a

  870. moral code that

  871. he expects us to

  872. follow.

  873. But there's a

  874. third way that

  875. Christianity offers

  876. us.

  877. Not by defining

  878. ourselves by our

  879. morality and

  880. clinging to

  881. Christ.

  882. And it says that

  883. if we do that

  884. our behavior will

  885. change.

  886. We will become

  887. more like him.

  888. But that's a

  889. secondary thing.

  890. It's something that

  891. happens in response

  892. to who we

  893. already are.

  894. It's not what

  895. makes us a

  896. Christian.

  897. It's what happens

  898. in our lives

  899. because of the

  900. fact that we're

  901. already Christians.

  902. And so just like

  903. the church at

  904. Sardis the church

  905. today is so

  906. susceptible to

  907. these attacks.

  908. To seeing a

  909. big issue on the

  910. horizon and

  911. focusing on that

  912. and losing our

  913. sight of Christ

  914. in the process.

  915. And when we

  916. see ourselves

  917. fighting against

  918. these big issues

  919. well and we

  920. think we're doing

  921. great we have

  922. this assumption

  923. that we as a

  924. church are alive

  925. and strong when

  926. the foundation that

  927. the church is built

  928. on has crumbled

  929. from our lives.

  930. The assumption

  931. is deadly.

  932. The third thing I

  933. want us to see

  934. about this church

  935. at Sardis is

  936. that current

  937. circumstances don't

  938. seal our fate.

  939. Current

  940. circumstances don't

  941. seal our fate.

  942. You know Christ

  943. comes to this

  944. church and he

  945. says you guys

  946. have a great

  947. reputation.

  948. Everyone thinks

  949. you got it going

  950. on.

  951. Everyone thinks

  952. you're great.

  953. Everyone thinks

  954. you're the church

  955. to look at and

  956. you're not.

  957. You're dead.

  958. But I'm not

  959. giving up on you.

  960. I'm not

  961. abandoning you

  962. and saying it's

  963. over.

  964. No he gives

  965. him a challenge.

  966. He says wake

  967. up strengthen

  968. what remains and

  969. is about to die

  970. for I have not

  971. found your works

  972. complete in the

  973. sight of my God.

  974. Remember then

  975. what you received

  976. and heard keep

  977. it and repent.

  978. He says I'm

  979. giving you another

  980. chance.

  981. You've messed

  982. up a lot.

  983. but I forgive.

  984. I'm the God

  985. who forgives.

  986. I'm the God

  987. who gives

  988. second and

  989. third and

  990. fourth and

  991. fifth chances.

  992. I'm giving you

  993. another one.

  994. Wake up.

  995. Yeah a lot of

  996. you are dead

  997. but it's not

  998. too late.

  999. Judgment

  1000. hasn't come

  1001. yet.

  1002. It may soon

  1003. but it hasn't

  1004. yet.

  1005. And I

  1006. think if we

  1007. here today

  1008. feel that

  1009. as we listen

  1010. to this that

  1011. our lives sort

  1012. of reflect this

  1013. church at Sardis

  1014. that we have

  1015. everything going

  1016. on good on

  1017. the outside

  1018. but on the

  1019. inside this

  1020. relationship with

  1021. Christ that's

  1022. fundamental has

  1023. sort of crumbled.

  1024. God's telling

  1025. us it's not

  1026. too late for

  1027. you.

  1028. Wake up.

  1029. Repent.

  1030. You know I

  1031. had a startling

  1032. reminder this

  1033. week of how

  1034. short life can

  1035. be.

  1036. One of my

  1037. friends, he's

  1038. younger than I

  1039. am, had a

  1040. heart attack, a

  1041. very serious

  1042. one.

  1043. He survived

  1044. this reminder

  1045. that at any

  1046. moment none

  1047. of us knows

  1048. when our time

  1049. is going to

  1050. come.

  1051. This guy was

  1052. in his early

  1053. 20s, heart

  1054. attack.

  1055. None of us

  1056. knows when

  1057. our time is

  1058. and God's

  1059. calling us to

  1060. wake up right

  1061. now.

  1062. So I have

  1063. some questions

  1064. that I want

  1065. us to think

  1066. about today.

  1067. The first

  1068. one, if

  1069. God were

  1070. writing one

  1071. of these

  1072. letters to

  1073. you, like

  1074. he's writing

  1075. to the seven

  1076. churches, what

  1077. would he say

  1078. in it?

  1079. What would

  1080. he list off

  1081. as your

  1082. strengths?

  1083. What would

  1084. he list off

  1085. as your

  1086. weaknesses?

  1087. What would

  1088. he list off as

  1089. your weaknesses?

  1090. Would the

  1091. overall mood

  1092. of the letter

  1093. be a positive

  1094. thing?

  1095. Like, good

  1096. job, you're

  1097. holding fast

  1098. to Christ, you're

  1099. standing up for

  1100. me?

  1101. Or would it

  1102. be something

  1103. like the

  1104. church at

  1105. Sardis?

  1106. You know,

  1107. everyone else

  1108. thinks that

  1109. you've got it

  1110. going on, but

  1111. you don't.

  1112. Or would it

  1113. just be, you

  1114. don't even

  1115. pretend.

  1116. Everyone knows

  1117. that you're not

  1118. following me.

  1119. And I want to

  1120. be careful with

  1121. this because I

  1122. know that we

  1123. live in this

  1124. culture where

  1125. we're perfectionist

  1126. and we hold

  1127. ourselves to

  1128. this super

  1129. high standard

  1130. that if I

  1131. get 99% on

  1132. the exam and

  1133. miss one

  1134. question, then

  1135. it's basically

  1136. the same as

  1137. failing.

  1138. And I don't

  1139. want us to

  1140. judge ourselves

  1141. super harshly,

  1142. but at the

  1143. same time, I

  1144. also know that

  1145. we have this

  1146. tendency to

  1147. justify ourselves,

  1148. to approve of

  1149. actions in

  1150. ourselves that

  1151. we would never

  1152. approve of in

  1153. others, to

  1154. overlook our

  1155. faults, to

  1156. overlook our

  1157. failures and

  1158. our weaknesses

  1159. because we

  1160. want ourselves

  1161. to be better.

  1162. And so my

  1163. challenge is,

  1164. think honestly

  1165. about it.

  1166. Where is our

  1167. hope?

  1168. We were saying

  1169. earlier, my hope

  1170. is built on

  1171. nothing less than

  1172. Jesus' blood and

  1173. righteousness.

  1174. Is that actually

  1175. where our hope

  1176. is?

  1177. Or is our hope

  1178. built on our

  1179. morality?

  1180. Is our hope

  1181. built on our

  1182. church attendance?

  1183. Is our hope

  1184. built on our

  1185. reputation, whether

  1186. we deserve that

  1187. reputation or

  1188. not?

  1189. My second

  1190. question for us

  1191. today is, where

  1192. is our battle?

  1193. You know, the

  1194. city of Sardis,

  1195. they had fights,

  1196. they had lots of

  1197. battles because it

  1198. was such a

  1199. strategic city.

  1200. And like we

  1201. saw, their huge

  1202. weakness that

  1203. happened to them

  1204. twice was that

  1205. the place they

  1206. thought they were

  1207. the strongest was

  1208. actually the place

  1209. where they were

  1210. the weakest.

  1211. The place they

  1212. thought they didn't

  1213. need to defend was

  1214. the place where the

  1215. enemies were able

  1216. to get in.

  1217. And the Bible

  1218. tells us that for

  1219. each of us, our

  1220. lives are a battle.

  1221. That every day

  1222. there's a war going

  1223. on for our souls

  1224. and the souls of

  1225. everyone around us

  1226. where God is

  1227. saying, hey, come

  1228. follow me.

  1229. And Satan is

  1230. trying to distract

  1231. us and show us

  1232. why we don't need

  1233. God and convince

  1234. us that God's not

  1235. really as good as

  1236. he says he is.

  1237. There's a battle.

  1238. And Satan loves

  1239. to distract us

  1240. from this battle.

  1241. One of his

  1242. primary tactics is

  1243. making us so

  1244. comfortable we

  1245. forget there is a

  1246. battle.

  1247. But where is

  1248. our battle?

  1249. Have we forgotten

  1250. that we're in a

  1251. battle?

  1252. If so, we're

  1253. already losing.

  1254. But if we know

  1255. we're in a battle,

  1256. are we focusing

  1257. on the right

  1258. enemies?

  1259. You know, this

  1260. church at Sardis,

  1261. they were probably

  1262. fighting very

  1263. vigilantly to

  1264. stand up for

  1265. their morality,

  1266. to stand up for

  1267. what they saw as

  1268. right.

  1269. They were fighting

  1270. so hard, but

  1271. all their focus,

  1272. all their attention,

  1273. all their energy

  1274. was on the wrong

  1275. part of the battle.

  1276. they left a

  1277. deadly weakness

  1278. that killed

  1279. them.

  1280. And in our

  1281. lives, yes, we

  1282. struggle against a

  1283. lot of things.

  1284. There's temptation

  1285. all around us

  1286. every day.

  1287. Temptation to

  1288. conform to what

  1289. our boss wants

  1290. rather than what

  1291. Christ wants.

  1292. temptation to

  1293. sort of blend in

  1294. and fit in with

  1295. the crowd and

  1296. not stand up for

  1297. the fact that we

  1298. actually believe in

  1299. Jesus.

  1300. temptation sexually

  1301. everywhere in our

  1302. culture.

  1303. All sorts of

  1304. temptations.

  1305. And it's good to

  1306. fight against these

  1307. things.

  1308. But if we fight

  1309. against them

  1310. exclusively and

  1311. lose sight of the

  1312. primary battle,

  1313. which is the

  1314. battle for us to

  1315. hold on to

  1316. Christ,

  1317. then no matter

  1318. how hard we

  1319. fight, no matter

  1320. how well we

  1321. fight, we're

  1322. going to lose

  1323. because we're

  1324. fighting primarily

  1325. against the

  1326. wrong enemy.

  1327. You know, there

1328. was a time in my

  1329. life when I was

  1330. relatively new in

  1331. Hong Kong.

  1332. I struggled a lot

  1333. with loneliness

  1334. during this time.

  1335. I was settling in

  1336. a new city, and I

  1337. just didn't know how

  1338. to cope with the

  1339. loneliness.

  1340. And there was

  1341. definitely this

  1342. spiritual battle

  1343. going on.

  1344. And in my

  1345. youth and

  1346. immaturity, I

  1347. didn't know the

  1348. proper response to

  1349. it.

  1350. And I could see

  1351. that there were

  1352. spiritual elements to

  1353. it, but I

  1354. couldn't see the

  1355. full picture.

  1356. And I began to

  1357. focus primarily on

  1358. this problem of

  1359. loneliness and

  1360. fighting against it

  1361. rather than

  1362. primarily on

  1363. holding on to

  1364. Christ and

  1365. clinging to him.

  1366. And so what I

  1367. would do is

  1368. whenever I felt

  1369. this loneliness,

  1370. I would find

  1371. ways to cope

  1372. with it.

  1373. I would watch

  1374. TV or a movie

  1375. because that would

  1376. make the loneliness

  1377. go away until the

  1378. end of the episode.

  1379. I would hang out

  1380. with friends because

  1381. when I was around

  1382. people, I wasn't

  1383. lonely.

  1384. I would read a

  1385. book or play

  1386. guitar or focus

  1387. really hard on my

  1388. work.

  1389. What I found was

  1390. that each of these

  1391. things that I would

  1392. do,

  1393. did get me

  1394. through the day.

  1395. They'd numb the

  1396. pain long enough

1397. for me to go to

  1398. bed that night and

  1399. wake up the next

  1400. morning.

  1401. The problem was,

  1402. as I continued to

  1403. focus exclusively on

  1404. this feeling of

  1405. loneliness rather

  1406. than focusing on

  1407. Christ, I fought

  1408. and fought and

  1409. fought and inside

  1410. me, the life was

  1411. crumbling apart.

  1412. And I knew it.

  1413. people would come

  1414. up to me and

  1415. they'd see that I

  1416. had this great

  1417. reputation because

  1418. I'm working in the

  1419. church.

  1420. I'm impacting

  1421. people's lives and

  1422. things must be great

  1423. for me.

  1424. And I knew I'm a

  1425. fake.

  1426. I remember one time

  1427. someone was praying

  1428. for me during this

  1429. time.

  1430. They were like,

  1431. Eric, as I pray,

  1432. I just see this

  1433. picture.

  1434. I don't have any

  1435. idea what it means,

  1436. but I see this

  1437. castle.

  1438. And it's big and

  1439. it's beautiful and

  1440. it has these huge

  1441. like turrets or

  1442. something on top of

  1443. it.

  1444. And it's nice and

  1445. painted fresh on the

  1446. outside and it looks

  1447. so strong.

  1448. But then inside, it's

  1449. just crumbling apart.

  1450. There's no one there.

  1451. Everything inside it is

  1452. dead.

1453. And I knew that that

  1454. was a description of

  1455. my life at that

  1456. moment.

  1457. There's this beautiful

  1458. castle.

  1459. Anyone who looked at

  1460. it from the outside

  1461. said, it's great.

  1462. Because I was

  1463. focusing on the

  1464. wrong battle.

  1465. Because I was

  1466. focusing on this

  1467. battle of the way

  1468. that I felt rather

  1469. than on focusing on

  1470. knowing Christ and

  1471. loving him.

1472. I kept up all the

  1473. external appearances.

1474. I kept up the great

  1475. reputation when I was

  1476. dead.

  1477. And thankfully, God

  1478. has brought people

  1479. into my life who

  1480. have called me out

  1481. on that and helped

  1482. me work through that

  1483. and helped point me

  1484. back to Christ.

1485. But I know that this

  1486. tendency is so common

  1487. in the church today.

1488. We see a problem, we

  1489. know that it's wrong.

1490. And yet we focus on

  1491. that problem rather

  1492. than on Christ.

1493. And as we focus on

  1494. that problem, it draws

  1495. us further and further

  1496. from Christ.

1497. And while we do a

  1498. great job defeating

  1499. that problem, the

  1500. life crumbles because

  1501. we lose hold of

  1502. Christ.

  1503. I mean, think about

  1504. it.

  1505. How many guys groups

  1506. are out there in

  1507. churches around the

  1508. world focused on

  1509. fighting against porn?

  1510. And what's the

  1511. approach?

  1512. Don't do porn.

  1513. Don't do porn.

  1514. Don't do porn.

  1515. And as you're

  1516. focusing on this, your

  1517. focus is always on

  1518. porn.

  1519. It's a focus on don't

1520. do it, but it's still

  1521. a focus on porn.

  1522. And you're never

  1523. focusing on Christ.

  1524. It's rampant in the

  1525. church.

  1526. We focus on our

  1527. problems rather than

  1528. on Christ, just like

  1529. the church at Sardis.

  1530. We're able to have

  1531. great behavior, great

  1532. reputations on the

  1533. outside.

  1534. And the life is

  1535. crumbling inside.

  1536. But there's hope.

  1537. Just like the church

  1538. in Sardis, there's

  1539. hope for us.

  1540. Jesus didn't give up

  1541. on them.

  1542. Jesus isn't giving up

  1543. on us.

  1544. He tells them, wake

  1545. up.

1546. And he tells us, wake

  1547. up.

  1548. He tells them, you

  1549. haven't been doing a

  1550. good job.

  1551. But it's not over.

  1552. There's still time.

  1553. There's still a chance.

1554. And if you turn to me,

1555. if you trust in me,

  1556. there's still a reward

  1557. waiting for you.

  1558. He says, you still

1559. have a few names in

  1560. Sardis, people who

  1561. have not soiled their

  1562. garments, and they

1563. will walk with me in

  1564. white, for they are

  1565. worthy.

  1566. This white garments,

  1567. this white clothing,

  1568. it's a picture of

  1569. purity and holiness

  1570. and victory.

  1571. And Jesus promises

  1572. that to those who

  1573. will walk with him,

  1574. not just in

  1575. appearance, but in

  1576. truth and reality.

  1577. He continues on.

1578. He says, the one who

  1579. conquers will be

  1580. clothed thus in

  1581. white garments.

  1582. And I will never

1583. blot his name out of

  1584. the book of life.

  1585. This word for

  1586. conquer that he uses

  1587. here, it means to

1588. win in the face of

  1589. obstacles, to be the

  1590. victor, to conquer

  1591. or overcome.

1592. So this is not going

  1593. to be easy.

  1594. But it's possible.

  1595. It's going to be a

  1596. battle.

  1597. You're going to have

  1598. to fight.

  1599. But when your

  1600. strength comes from

  1601. me, you have the

  1602. power to win.

  1603. And when you look

  1604. to me, when you

1605. trust in me, he says,

1606. I will give you the

  1607. strength to overcome,

  1608. to be a conqueror.

1609. I will never blot your

1610. name out of the book

  1611. of life.

  1612. We'll be welcomed

  1613. into God's kingdom

1614. if we hold on to

  1615. Christ, if we hold

  1616. fast to him.

  1617. He continues, I

  1618. will confess his

  1619. name before my

  1620. father and before

  1621. his angels.

  1622. Jesus says, look,

  1623. if you do these

  1624. things, if you hold

1625. on to me, not just

  1626. appearing to follow

  1627. me, but truly

  1628. trusting in me,

  1629. truly being

  1630. desperate for me,

  1631. I won't be ashamed

  1632. to be called your

  1633. God.

  1634. When the day comes

  1635. when you're at

  1636. judgment and you're

  1637. standing before the

  1638. father, I will be

  1639. standing there next

  1640. to you.

  1641. I'll say, Father,

  1642. this one's with me.

  1643. Let him in.

  1644. Father, I love this

  1645. one.

  1646. I died for him,

  1647. for her,

  1648. so that you can

  1649. accept them.

  1650. There is hope.

  1651. There is a promise.

  1652. God's love.

  1653. It requires that we

  1654. wake up.

1655. We can't rest on our

  1656. appearances.

1657. We can't rest on our

  1658. assumptions.

1659. We can't rest on our

  1660. reputations.

1661. We can't rest on our

  1662. obedience.

1663. We have to rest in

  1664. Christ, in Christ

  1665. alone.

  1666. I don't know what it

  1667. means for everyone in

1668. here to wake up today.

1669. Maybe for some of us,

  1670. we've never trusted in

  1671. Christ before.

1672. And waking up means for

  1673. the first time ever

  1674. acknowledging our need

  1675. for him.

  1676. Acknowledging that we are

1677. messed up, that we need

1678. him to forgive us and

1679. save us and give us this

  1680. new relationship with God.

1681. Maybe for some of us,

1682. you're like me, where you

1683. have this issue in your

  1684. life and you're fighting

  1685. against it, but you

  1686. realize, I'm fighting

  1687. against and against and

  1688. against this issue, but

1689. never fighting to hold on

  1690. to Christ.

  1691. And waking up means

  1692. turning and holding on

  1693. to Christ.

1694. Maybe some of us in

  1695. here, we're doing great

  1696. at all these things.

  1697. We're holding on to

  1698. Christ.

1699. And he's calling us to

  1700. strengthen what remains,

1701. to turn to the person

1702. next to us and help them

1703. do that in their life

  1704. too.

  1705. Regardless of where you

  1706. are, Jesus is calling

  1707. us to wake up,

  1708. strengthen what remains,

1709. turn to him, look to

1710. him, rest in him, find

1711. our identity in him, in

  1712. him alone.

  1713. Let's pray.

1714. Jesus, we thank you for

  1715. your love.

1716. We thank you that you

1717. are the God who forgives,

  1718. who gives second chances

  1719. and third chances and

  1720. fourth chances, who hasn't

1721. given up on us, but is

  1722. giving us the chance

1723. even today to wake up,

  1724. to repent, to come

  1725. back, even if we've

  1726. wandered far away.

1727. We pray that we would

1728. see you, we would know

1729. you, we would trust you

1730. and follow you, that we

  1731. wouldn't just have an

  1732. appearance of being alive,

1733. but that we would truly be

  1734. alive.

1735. and that one day we'd be

1736. able to walk with you in

  1737. these white garments, that

1738. our names would not be

1739. blotted out of the book

  1740. of life.

1741. And that at that day, when

  1742. we stand before the

  1743. Father, that you'll be

  1744. standing there beside us,

1745. saying that we are yours

  1746. and you are ours.

  1747. In Jesus' name, amen.

  1748. And I saw CO250.

1749. Can you ask someone to

1750. raise your hand in both

  1751. girls' layout and

  1752. Doug Smith?

  1753. Yes.
