  1. continuing to look at this story of Jonah,

  2. the runaway prophet and the merciful God.

  3. Here we find ourselves in Jonah chapter 3.

    Jonah 3 chapter mention

  4. We'll read the whole chapter

  5. and then we'll think about it together.

  6. Jonah chapter 3, verse 1.

    Jonah 3:1

  7. Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time.

  8. Go to the great city of Nineveh

  9. and proclaim to it the message I give you.

  10. Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh.

  11. Now Nineveh was a very important city.

  12. A visit required three days.

  13. On the first day, Jonah started into the city.

  14. He proclaimed,

  15. 40 more days and Nineveh will be overturned.

  16. The Ninevites believed God.

  17. They declared a fast and all of them

  18. from the greatest to the least put on sackcloth.

  19. When the news reached the king of Nineveh,

  20. he rose from his throne,

  21. took off his royal robes,

  22. covered himself with sackcloth

  23. and sat down in the dust.

  24. Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh.

  25. By the decree of the king and his nobles,

  26. do not let any man or beast,

  27. herd or flock, taste anything.

  28. Do not let them eat or drink,

  29. but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth.

  30. Let everyone call urgently on God.

  31. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.

  32. Who knows?

  33. God may yet relent and with compassion

  34. turn from his fierce anger

  35. so that we will not perish.

  36. When God saw what they did

  37. and how they turned from their evil ways,

  38. he had compassion

  39. and did not bring upon them

  40. the destruction he had threatened.

  41. Amen.

  42. Been at the garage a few times

  43. in the last couple of weeks,

  44. so we're going to begin thinking about cars.

  45. I don't know what your car history is like,

  46. but ours was pretty much a series

  47. of clapped out old bangers.

  48. There's one that stands out in particular

  49. in my head,

  50. described affectionately by an American friend of ours

  51. as a shoebox on wheels,

  52. a really nice machine.

  53. Well, this shoebox on wheels

  54. developed some gearbox trouble

  55. when we lived up in Dingwall.

  56. So we took it to our local mechanic.

  57. We used him quite a lot.

  58. He was a nice guy.

  59. We took him to the garage.

  60. He took a quick look,

  61. came back and I realized,

  62. he's fine.

  63. You'll be fine to run for weeks

  64. and months with that.

  65. Now, I don't know whether the mechanic

  66. was just particularly optimistic that day.

  67. 20 miles later,

  68. coming out of Inverness,

  69. our car gets stuck in third gear.

  70. Will not shift out of third gear.

  71. So we're hitting the,

  72. this is about five o'clock,

  73. we're hitting the roundabouts.

  74. Third gear,

  75. we're coming up to traffic lights in third gear.

  76. It's like,

  77. please,

  78. we made it all the way back to Dingwall

  79. and we eventually had to stop

  80. on the high street

  81. and had to push our car

  82. to the local car park.

  83. Now,

  84. when I heard the mechanic's message

  85. that morning,

  86. I was delighted

  87. because nobody wants to

  88. have to lose their car

  89. for a few days

  90. and face a mechanic's heavy bill.

  91. The message was nice.

  92. Problem was,

  93. as it turned out,

  94. it was neither true nor accurate.

  95. So when we reflect on that,

  96. which one would we prefer?

  97. Think about those kind of situations

  98. in your own life.

  99. I guess all of us

  100. would probably choose

  101. to know that there is a serious problem

  102. needing dealt with

  103. so that you can avoid

  104. a potentially difficult,

  105. potentially even dangerous situation.

  106. Now,

  107. this takes us right to the heart

  108. of our story today

  109. and to Jonah's message

  110. as he preaches to Nineveh

  111. in chapter three

  112. and verse four.

  113. Look at his message.

  114. Very simple sermon.

  115. Very short sermon,

  116. so it seems

  117. you're not getting one of those.

  118. He proclaimed,

  119. 40 more days

  120. and Nineveh

  121. will be overturned.

  122. So here is Jonah

  123. walking into enemy territory

  124. saying to them,

  125. you are about to face

  126. the judgment of God.

  127. That's a hard thing to do,

  128. isn't it?

  129. But what we'll see

  130. is that God's truth,

  131. God's hard truth

  132. does its work

  133. and a city is saved

  134. because Jonah brings

  135. the word of God

  136. to the people,

  137. a word that they may well

  138. not have wanted

  139. to hear.

  140. So this morning,

  141. we're going to concentrate

  142. on Jonah's message

  143. and then the response

  144. that we find

  145. in that,

  146. from that message.

  147. Look with me though

  148. at verse one

  149. before we even get

  150. to Jonah delivering

  151. the message.

  152. We see again

  153. hints of

  154. the dominant theme

  155. of the mercy of God

  156. coming through.

  157. The word of the Lord

  158. came to Jonah

  159. a second time.

  160. So if you've not been here,

  161. in chapter one

  162. what we discover

  163. is Jonah being told

  164. by God,

  165. go to Nineveh.

  166. And what he does instead

  167. is he runs away.

  168. So he's a disobedient prophet

  169. who gets

  170. a second chance.

  171. Now there's mercy,

  172. there's patience,

  173. there's grace and kindness

  174. from God

  175. there.

  176. And in verse two,

  177. he's given

  178. his mission

  179. once again.

  180. And it's almost

  181. the same

  182. as we find

  183. in chapter one,

  184. but there's a really

  185. important difference.

  186. So if you flick

  187. back over,

  188. let's see the difference.

  189. In chapter one

  190. in verse two,

  191. Jonah is told,

  192. go to the great city

  193. of Nineveh

  194. and preach

  195. against it.

  196. Chapter three,

  197. verse two,

  198. go to the great city

  199. of Nineveh

  200. and proclaim

  201. to it.

  202. So there is a difference

  203. there.

  204. Chapter one,

  205. preach against it.

  206. Chapter three,

  207. proclaim to it.

  208. So here's

  209. what I want us

  210. to see

  211. this morning.

  212. That Jonah's words,

  213. words of judgment,

  214. and Jonah's story,

  215. his story of receiving

  216. grace and mercy

  217. from the Lord God

  218. are a message

  219. of hope

  220. proclaimed

  221. to the city

  222. of Nineveh.

  223. That Jonah

  224. can speak to them

  225. and say,

  226. yes,

  227. you are facing

  228. God's just judgment,

  229. but still

  230. there is hope

  231. of forgiveness

  232. and rescue

  233. and restoration.

  234. And I know this

  235. because this is my story,

  236. because this is my experience.

  237. And so Jonah,

  238. as we found

  239. in the end of chapter one

  240. into chapter two,

  241. had been thrown

  242. into a storm

  243. of God's judgment,

  244. facing certain death,

  245. but was saved

  246. by God's grace

  247. as God sent the fish

  248. to swallow Jonah.

  249. Now Jonah,

  250. it is restored

  251. to relationship

  252. with God.

  253. Now he is in service

  254. of God

  255. and this is

  256. his message.

  257. This is the message

  258. of his life.

  259. There is grace

  260. after judgment.

  261. There is a God

  262. who delights

  263. to show mercy.

  264. And in God's providence,

  265. God has been controlling

  266. this whole story.

  267. The city of Nineveh

  268. are going to hear

  269. from a prophet of God

  270. who's just recently

  271. had this first-hand reminder

  272. of the grace

  273. and mercy

  274. of God.

  275. And so we need

  276. to bear that in mind

  277. and we'll see it

  278. come out actually.

  279. But in verse three,

  280. we see Jonah this time

  281. doesn't go running.

  282. This time he obeys

  283. the word of the Lord

  284. and goes to Nineveh,

  285. travels right through it

  286. over the three days

  287. and he proclaims

  288. that message.

  289. Takes him three days,

  290. whether that's because

  291. he has to meet

  292. the officials

  293. and there's all kinds

  294. of ceremony

  295. or whether it's just

  296. it's a fairly large city.

  297. But you get the idea

  298. of Jonah going

  299. through each part

  300. of the city,

  301. whether it's to the rich area

  302. or the poor area,

  303. whether it's the centers

  304. of business

  305. or education

  306. or government

  307. and the message

  308. is the same.

  309. The message is

  310. that because

  311. of your wickedness,

  312. the judgment

  313. of God

  314. is upon you.

  315. It's an easy message

  316. in a sense

  317. to read

  318. sort of divided

  319. as we are

  320. by time and history.

  321. But imagine

  322. being Jonah.

  323. He knows

  324. what the people

  325. of Nineveh are like.

  326. He knows

  327. their wickedness.

  328. He's probably

  329. heard the stories,

  330. maybe seen it firsthand

  331. and now he has to go

  332. into enemy territory

  333. announcing

  334. this message

  335. to them.

  336. That's not

  337. easy.

  338. Let's just stop

  339. for a moment.

  340. Let me

  341. encourage

  342. one another

  343. to be praying

  344. for

  345. the people

  346. that we know

  347. who preach

  348. and teach the Bible,

  349. to pray for

  350. Christians

  351. who are

  352. public figures,

  353. for those

  354. who seek

  355. to live

  356. consistently

  357. faced with

  358. a barrage

  359. of attacks.

  360. We see it

  361. in our media

  362. how difficult

  363. it can be

  364. to live

  365. consistently

  366. for the Lord

  367. Jesus.

  368. There is that

  369. temptation

  370. to give people

  371. what they

  372. want,

  373. to bend

  374. to culture,

  375. perhaps to

  376. present a God

  377. who is love

  378. and love

  379. only,

  380. to miss

  381. the judgment

  382. of God

  383. that Jonah

  384. was called

  385. to speak of.

  386. But if we are

  387. to be faithful

  388. to the Bible

  389. and to be faithful

  390. to the character

  391. of God

  392. and to actually

  393. present Jesus

  394. as good news,

  395. we need to bring

  396. these hard realities

  397. to people.

  398. To use some

  399. of the pictures

  400. that we find

  401. in the Bible,

  402. God is

  403. our king.

  404. Whether we

  405. accept that

  406. or whether we

  407. don't accept that

  408. as people

  409. makes no odds,

  410. God is the

  411. king who is

  412. over us

  413. and our

  414. rebellion

  415. against his

  416. rule and his

  417. law is like

  418. an act of

  419. treason

  420. against our

  421. king.

  422. Or to use

  423. another picture

  424. from the Bible,

  425. God is

  426. our

  427. father.

  428. We read a

  429. couple of weeks

  430. ago the story

  431. of the prodigal

  432. son.

  433. That son who

  434. said,

  435. Father,

  436. I don't want

  437. anything to do

  438. with you.

  439. I want your

  440. money,

  441. I want your

  442. stuff,

  443. but I don't

  444. want you,

  445. I want freedom

  446. away from you.

  447. When we treat

  448. God in that

  449. way,

  450. when we live

  451. in his world

  452. without any

  453. thought of

  454. God,

  455. the Bible

  456. says that's

  457. deserving of

  458. judgment.

  459. The Bible

  460. often presents

  461. God as

  462. a judge

  463. and our

  464. sin,

  465. our failure

  466. to love God

  467. and to love

  468. others is

  469. presented as

  470. lawlessness.

  471. forgiveness.

  472. And the

  473. sentence that

  474. we deserve

  475. is eternal

  476. death.

  477. Now,

  478. that's a

  479. hard message,

  480. but it's a

  481. necessary

  482. message.

  483. Imagine for

  484. a moment

  485. that we're

  486. sitting,

  487. and some

  488. of you have

  489. been here

  490. sitting in a

  491. surgeon's

  492. office.

  493. You've gone,

  494. there's been

  495. something bothering

  496. you, you've

  497. gone and you've

  498. had some tests

  499. and now you're

  500. waiting to hear

  501. the outcome.

  502. Of course,

  503. the message

  504. that we would

  505. all want to

  506. hear at that

  507. moment is,

  508. the tests are

  509. all clear,

  510. you're fine.

  511. But if in

  512. reality you

  513. have an

  514. aggressive

  515. illness at

  516. work in

  517. your body,

  518. then that's

  519. not the

  520. message that

  521. you need.

  522. The message

  523. you need is

  524. your condition

  525. is serious,

  526. but there is

  527. hope, there

  528. is a

  529. cure.

  530. And so

  531. we must

  532. always speak

  533. of the

  534. judgment of

  535. God, otherwise

  536. the cross of

  537. Jesus makes

  538. no sense.

  539. Unless we

  540. understand that

  541. he is there

  542. in our place

  543. taking that

  544. judgment for

  545. us, there is

  546. no point in

  547. the Son of

  548. God going to

  549. the cross unless

  550. the judgment of

  551. God is real

  552. and sin is

  553. serious.

  554. And what we

  555. see even in

  556. the story of

  557. Nineveh is

  558. that had

  559. Jonah refused

  560. to speak of

  561. the judgment

  562. of God, those

  563. people would

  564. not have

  565. changed and

  566. their city

  567. would certainly

  568. have been

  569. destroyed.

  570. They needed

  571. to hear of

  572. the judgment

  573. of God.

  574. But you

  575. know that's

  576. not all that

  577. Jonah brought

  578. to them.

  579. Look with me

  580. at verse

  581. number nine.

  582. There's this

  583. wonderful hint

  584. at what Jonah

  585. has been speaking

  586. to them

  587. about.

  588. So this is a

  589. godless king

  590. known for

  591. leading the

  592. way in

  593. violence but

  594. yet he can

  595. reflect and

  596. say, who

  597. knows, God

  598. may yet

  599. relent and

  600. with compassion

  601. turn from his

  602. fierce anger

  603. so that we

  604. will not

  605. perish.

  606. Now where

  607. does that

  608. idea come

  609. from?

  610. It certainly

  611. doesn't come

  612. from any

  613. of the pagan

  614. gods that

  615. were around

  616. in Nineveh

  617. at the time.

  618. This king,

  619. this godless

  620. king has

  621. hope of

  622. finding

  623. compassion and

  624. mercy because

  625. of Jonah's

  626. life story,

  627. because of

  628. the message

  629. of Jonah,

  630. because of

  631. the experiences

  632. of Jonah.

  633. He is the

  634. prophet who

  635. could reflect

  636. on the fact

  637. that he was

  638. deserving of

  639. God's judgment

  640. but instead

  641. he knew God

  642. relenting and

  643. showing mercy

  644. and compassion.

  645. Here is a

  646. prophet who

  647. could speak of

  648. both the

  649. justice of

  650. God and

  651. mercy beyond

  652. justice to

  653. Nineveh.

  654. And you know

  655. that's what

  656. we all need.

  657. We all need

  658. someone sent

  659. by God to

  660. speak the

  661. hard truth to

  662. us of our

  663. wickedness and

  664. the judgment

  665. that we should

  666. receive but

  667. can also offer

  668. us the hope of

  669. rescue.

  670. He can also

  671. offer us the

  672. hope of finding

  673. peace with

  674. God from this

  675. desperate situation

  676. that we find

  677. ourselves in.

  678. And isn't this

  679. the heart of

  680. our Christian

  681. testimony?

  682. That our

  683. stories are not

  684. about ourselves.

  685. They're about the

  686. grace of God in

  687. rescuing us.

  688. That's the God

  689. that we share

  690. with others.

  691. We have a story

  692. to share like

  693. Jonah of God's

  694. grace to us.

  695. And ultimately

  696. this prophet Jonah

  697. points us forward

  698. to Jesus the

  699. true prophet,

  700. the ultimate

  701. prophet.

  702. Because the

  703. gospel of Jesus

  704. Christ says that

  705. God's judgment

  706. against sin is

  707. real and God in

  708. his love sent

  709. Jesus to bear

  710. that sin and

  711. that judgment for

  712. us on our

  713. behalf.

  714. So that we

  715. might know

  716. God's compassion.

  717. That God's mercy

  718. towards sinners

  719. is real and the

  720. cross shows us

  721. that.

  722. Because God

  723. didn't leave us

  724. in our helpless

  725. condition.

  726. He sent Jesus to

  727. be our substitute,

  728. to be our

  729. rescuer.

  730. So that on the

  731. cross Jesus takes

  732. our sin on

  733. himself and he

  734. gifts us his

  735. perfect record of

  736. righteous obedience

  737. so we can be

  738. accepted by God

  739. so that God can

  740. delight over us

  741. with singing.

  742. He becomes the

  743. abandoned son so

  744. that we by faith

  745. in him might be

  746. adopted children

  747. of God.

  748. And so Jesus,

  749. the true prophet,

  750. his life and his

  751. death and his

  752. resurrection speak a

  753. message of hope

  754. to us.

  755. He is the one who

  756. has lived for us

  757. the life that we

  758. could never live.

  759. He has died for us

  760. the death that we

  761. deserve to die and

  762. he's risen again to

  763. guarantee new life

  764. to all who will

  765. trust in him.

  766. And that by faith in

  767. him we can know

  768. forgiveness and

  769. mercy and grace

  770. after judgment.

  771. And there is power

  772. in that story,

  773. in the gospel story.

  774. We see it in

  775. Nineveh here because

  776. look at their

  777. response in verses

  778. five to nine.

  779. Having heard of

  780. the judgment of

  781. God, having seen

  782. in Jonah's life

  783. the mercy of God,

  784. how do they

  785. respond?

  786. It's really

  787. helpful for us to

  788. reflect on their

  789. response because

  790. perhaps we find

  791. ourselves thinking,

  792. well if this is

  793. God's message to me,

  794. if this is God's

  795. message to the world,

  796. how should I

  797. respond to this?

  798. What am I supposed

  799. to do about this

  800. message of a God

  801. who is just and a

  802. God who shows mercy

  803. and a God who sent

  804. Jesus?

  805. Well let's look

  806. together at the

  807. city of Nineveh

  808. and see what we can

  809. learn from them.

  810. first of all,

  811. in verse five,

  812. they are those who

  813. believed God.

  814. So Jonah came

  815. bringing a message

  816. from God and they

  817. believed it.

  818. What could they have

  819. done in that

  820. situation?

  821. What might people

  822. have expected them

  823. to do given their

  824. history of wickedness

  825. and cruelty?

  826. Well they could have

  827. heard this message

  828. and they could

  829. simply have killed

  830. Jonah as a hostile

  831. enemy.

  832. They had a history

  833. of hatred towards

  834. the people of God,

  835. the people of Israel,

  836. so he could just

  837. have been another

  838. casualty of that

  839. hatred.

  840. Or they could have

  841. laughed his message

  842. off as crazy talk.

  843. Who is this guy

  844. walking in here

  845. saying 40 days and

  846. the place is going

  847. to be destroyed?

  848. That's nonsense.

  849. Or they could have

  850. heard the message

  851. and despaired at it

  852. but concluded there

  853. was no hope,

  854. so there was no point

  855. in them changing.

  856. But the wonderful

  857. thing is they don't do

  858. any of those,

  859. rather they

  860. believed God.

  861. And you know,

  862. that's not down to

  863. them,

  864. that's entirely

  865. a God thing.

  866. God is opening

  867. their hearts

  868. and their consciences

  869. to respond

  870. positively to this

  871. message.

  872. For hundreds of years,

  873. the nation and the

  874. city,

  875. hostile to God

  876. and his people

  877. and his word,

  878. but now in God's

  879. grace,

  880. they respond

  881. with belief.

  882. And that belief

  883. leads them to action.

  884. We read it in

  885. verses 5 to 8,

  886. there's all these

  887. signs of repentance.

  888. So as we continue

  889. in verse 5,

  890. they declare a fast,

  891. they put on sackcloth,

  892. we see the king

  893. taking off his robes,

  894. he's covered with

  895. sackcloth and he

  896. sits down in the dust.

  897. All of these are

  898. signs of sorrow

  899. for their wickedness,

  900. a sense of humility

  901. before God

  902. and a desire

  903. to change.

  904. In verse 8,

  905. the king calls

  906. the whole society,

  907. even the animals,

  908. to a fast,

  909. to not eating,

  910. to show sorrow

  911. over their wickedness

  912. and sin.

  913. We see them

  914. wearing sackcloth,

  915. those scratchy

  916. pieces of clothing

  917. as a sign of them

  918. humbling themselves

  919. before God.

  920. And then in verse 8,

  921. we see there is

  922. prayer,

  923. let everyone call

  924. urgently on God

  925. and there is a desire

  926. to change their ways,

  927. let them give up

  928. their evil ways

  929. and their violence.

  930. There's going to be

  931. a new direction

  932. for the life

  933. of this city

  934. because they have

  935. heard the message,

  936. they've been convicted

  937. by it,

  938. and there's a desire

  939. to repent and change.

  940. For God to change

  941. any one of us,

  942. it begins with that

  943. sense of conviction

  944. that all is not well

  945. between me and God.

  946. That because of our sin,

  947. our walking away

  948. from God,

  949. our failure,

  950. even to match up

  951. to our own standards,

  952. never mind God's,

  953. there is a problem there.

  954. And there needs to be

  955. that conviction

  956. that leads us

  957. to repentance.

  958. So instead of,

  959. I feel really bad

  960. about that,

  961. but there's nothing

  962. I can do about it,

  963. and we decide,

  964. I'm not going to walk

  965. my own way,

  966. I'm not going to walk

  967. just pleasing myself,

  968. I'm going to turn

  969. and I'm going to live

  970. for the glory of God.

  971. That I'm going to get rid

  972. of those other things

  973. that I've made

  974. more important than God,

  975. that He's going to be

  976. my first priority.

  977. And we see

  978. in the language

  979. of verse 9

  980. that there is a sense

  981. of trust in God.

  982. They don't presume

  983. on the mercy of God.

  984. God may yet relent

  985. and with compassion

  986. turn from His fierce anger

  987. so that we will not perish,

  988. but they certainly see

  989. that God is their only hope

  990. of salvation.

  991. Our city is going

  992. to be destroyed

  993. unless we turn to God,

  994. unless we place our hope

  995. in His mercy.

  996. And that all leads them

  997. to this point of trust,

  998. and then we see

  999. how God wonderfully

  1000. responds to that.

  1001. So I wonder,

1002. as we consider the gospel,

  1003. as we consider

  1004. what God has done

  1005. for us in Jesus,

  1006. how are we responding

  1007. to that message?

  1008. Is there a sense

  1009. of conviction

  1010. in our hearts

  1011. about the ways

  1012. that we have chosen

  1013. to ignore God

1014. or walk away from God?

  1015. Is there a desire

  1016. in us

  1017. to repent

  1018. from that

1019. and to turn to God

  1020. or to return

  1021. to God?

  1022. Because a Christian life,

  1023. Martin Luther said,

  1024. should be one

  1025. of daily repentance.

  1026. Are we coming

1027. to Him in our need,

  1028. trusting in Him

  1029. as our only hope,

  1030. as our only Savior?

  1031. Are we responding

  1032. to the gospel

  1033. in ways

  1034. that would be

  1035. similar to that

  1036. of Nineveh?

  1037. And then we see

  1038. God's response.

  1039. We see God's mercy.

  1040. We see this incredible

  1041. turnaround.

  1042. When God saw

  1043. what they did

  1044. and how they turned

  1045. from their evil ways,

  1046. He had compassion

  1047. and did not bring

  1048. upon them

  1049. the destruction

  1050. He had threatened.

  1051. So remember,

  1052. the book of Nahum

  1053. tells us this,

1054. that this is a city

  1055. that's famous

  1056. for lying,

  1057. for stealing,

  1058. for killing.

  1059. This is a city

  1060. and nation

  1061. with a history

  1062. of hatred

  1063. towards God

  1064. and God's people.

1065. But here is a city

  1066. that is saved

  1067. by God's

  1068. incredible mercy

  1069. because of the heart

  1070. of God,

  1071. because of God's desire

  1072. to rescue people.

  1073. As Peter says it

  1074. in his second letter,

  1075. chapter 3,

  1076. the Lord is patient

  1077. with you,

  1078. not wanting anyone

  1079. to perish,

  1080. but everyone

  1081. to come to repentance.

  1082. It was a story

  1083. of Paul,

  1084. that here I was,

  1085. a violent man

  1086. persecuting the church,

1087. wanting rid of the church

1088. and God in His grace

  1089. sent Jesus

  1090. and His mercy

  1091. changed me.

  1092. So Nineveh's change

  1093. of heart towards God

  1094. results in this

  1095. wonderful new verdict

  1096. that once they turn

  1097. towards Him

  1098. as they are prompted

  1099. to do that

  1100. by God Himself,

  1101. He shows them

  1102. mercy and compassion.

  1103. And you know,

  1104. it's stories like this,

  1105. it's stories of God's grace

  1106. that can encourage us

  1107. towards prayerfulness.

  1108. You know,

1109. if God can change Paul,

  1110. He can change anyone.

1111. If God can change this city,

1112. He can change any city.

  1113. It's stories like this

  1114. that can fuel

  1115. our desire to pray

  1116. and to keep praying

  1117. for those missionaries

  1118. that we know

  1119. around the globe

  1120. and gives us courage

  1121. to witness

  1122. instead of to despair

  1123. and think,

1124. God will never use me

1125. or things will never change.

  1126. God's mercy

  1127. is great.

1128. And this brings us back

  1129. once again

  1130. to Jesus,

  1131. the true prophet

1132. and to the good news

  1133. that Jesus brings.

  1134. Think about it.

  1135. If Jonah's life

  1136. encouraged the people

  1137. of Nineveh

  1138. that there is hope

  1139. for them

1140. in the mercy of God,

  1141. how much more

1142. should the life of Jesus

  1143. encourage us

  1144. to recognize

  1145. that there is mercy

  1146. for us?

1147. So the king of Nineveh

  1148. wasn't sure

  1149. would God relent

  1150. and show compassion,

  1151. but we can know

  1152. with certainty

  1153. that if we trust

  1154. in Jesus

  1155. that He will relent,

1156. that He will show us

  1157. compassion

  1158. because the justice

  1159. that we deserve

  1160. has been served

  1161. on the Lord Jesus.

  1162. Jesus experienced

  1163. the Father's fierce anger

  1164. on our behalf

1165. so that we need not

  1166. and we will not

  1167. if our hope

  1168. is in Him,

  1169. that we can know

  1170. salvation from Jesus,

  1171. that we can know

  1172. that we will not

  1173. be destroyed

  1174. because He gave up

  1175. His body

  1176. to be destroyed

  1177. so that we

  1178. could be welcomed

  1179. and loved

  1180. by our Father

  1181. in Heaven,

  1182. that we could know

  1183. new life.

  1184. So just as Jonah

  1185. is the prophet

  1186. who speaks of justice

  1187. and mercy,

1188. Jesus is the true prophet

  1189. we look to,

  1190. who speaks to us,

1191. the cross speaks to us

  1192. absolutely of the justice

  1193. of God,

  1194. the seriousness of sin

1195. and the holiness of God,

1196. but it speaks to us

  1197. also of mercy

  1198. beyond judgment

  1199. in His resurrection life.

1200. And so He is the one

1201. that we need to look to

  1202. and trust in.

  1203. His is the story

1204. that we need to share.

1205. He is the true prophet

1206. whose words we all need

  1207. to respond to

  1208. in faith

  1209. and obedience.
