  1. Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would fall, continue to fall upon us.

  2. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would both humble us,

  3. but at the same time, Father, that your Holy Spirit humbles us.

  4. May your Holy Spirit fan into flame within us a hunger for you,

  5. to know you, to be known by you, to be yours.

  6. Father, we ask for this double work of your Holy Spirit this morning,

  7. to both humble us and fan into flame a deep hunger for you.

  8. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. I'm getting older, so I'm allowed to be curmudgeonly,

  11. although I have to be careful I don't become too curmudgeonly.

  12. But for a long time, even before I got older,

  13. I've had problem in churches when they applaud the praise band.

  14. Not that we've done it here,

  15. and not that we couldn't clap our hands for Jeremiah and the band,

  16. but on my holidays, I go in some churches,

  17. and they sing a real rock and praise song,

  18. and then everybody stops and claps their hands for a while,

  19. and then they sing another song,

  20. and then they all clap their hands and hoot and holler.

  21. And I have to confess, I always feel very conflicted when I'm there.

  22. In fact, if you saw me, everybody's clapping and doing all this

  23. and clapping and doing this, and I'm just standing here like this,

  24. because I just feel, it sort of feels funny.

  25. It feels a little bit like when you watch a lot of sporting things,

  26. and after somebody's done really a good job,

  27. they say, I'm the man.

  28. I'm the man.

  29. I mean, how would it, you know, I just, I, like, we're the church.

  30. Whoa, you know, like, listen to us sing.

  31. Whoa, I just, it feels, it just feels funny to me.

  32. You know, I know that, you know, I know it's, it's,

  33. I know that it's not the case that churches where everything is really solemn,

  34. like a lot of Anglican churches where nobody cracks a smile,

  35. like to crack a smile is to sin against the Holy Spirit.

  36. Whoever she is, that's how a lot of Anglican churches would say, speak.

  37. And, or whoever it is, and you're allowed to crack a smile.

  38. You have to be completely and utterly serious.

  39. And, you know, there's, you know, immaculate,

  40. whether it's a band or a choir and everything's immaculate.

  41. And, you know, it doesn't, it seems as if you don't have,

  42. I understand sometimes that people just get really excited and joyful

  43. and they want to clap, and it's, I just, I feel conflicted by it,

  44. you know, a lot of times.

  45. And I also know that it's not the case,

  46. that it might very well be the case at that church that I visit

  47. where the band has just really pumped out something

  48. and then everybody cheers and claps,

  49. that the band is completely and utterly,

  50. it might very well be the case that the band is completely and utterly unmoved by it

  51. and they don't take the glory onto themselves.

  52. And that the solemn, somber church that would no more clap after something than,

  53. I don't know, than, you know,

  54. they would say, drop the F-bomb during the service,

  55. that the organist or the minister or the choir or the band might walk away

  56. just feeling really like, wow, did I ever do a good job?

  57. Like internally they have, you know, externally they have the solemn face,

  58. but internally they're going, I'm the man.

  59. I'm the man.

  60. Did we ever knock that out of the park today?

  61. I'm the man.

  62. But, you know, somber on the outside.

  63. But it, don't you, it's, I, anyway, I feel conflicted

  64. when churches applaud the band.

  65. You know, I mean, I do sort of like listening to Joyce Meyer

  66. and she makes a good point and the whole auditorium bursts into applause

  67. and I wish it would happen to me occasionally.

  68. But I guess I just don't speak as well as Joyce Meyer.

  69. We often have supper to Joyce Meyer, by the way.

  70. So those of you who listen to CHRI know roughly when we eat supper,

  71. we go from Joyce Meyer to focus on the family.

  72. But anyway, the Bible text here talks a little bit about glory

  73. and the dangers of glory.

  74. And maybe after we've read these next few verses in the Bible text,

  75. it'll just, you will, I will have given you the gift

  76. of being conflicted about applause in church.

  77. So let's just turn to it.

  78. And because the text begins with a sort of actually a very, very powerful insight

  79. into human glory and angelic glory

  80. and sort of what it is and how we easily misread it

  81. and misunderstand it when it's sort of going on in our own lives.

  82. And as always, there's Bibles up at the front.

  83. If you didn't bring your own Bible, you can have it,

  84. use it during the service, take it home as a gift if you'd like.

  85. And we're looking at Revelation chapter 18.

    Revelation 18 chapter mention

  86. And it's back of the Bible if you're not familiar with the Bible.

  87. And verse 1 is where we'll begin.

  88. And just to give you a bit of context,

  89. I'm not going to give you the context for all the book of Revelation

  90. as we're preaching through it.

  91. But in chapter 16, there's sort of a final cycle of judgments.

  92. And then the book of Revelation, John sees something different.

  93. He's sort of looking at the same thing from a different perspective.

  94. And he sees sort of a pronouncement made on Babylon, the great city.

  95. And all the way through the book of Revelation,

  96. Babylon, sometimes it's called Rome, sometimes it's called Jerusalem,

  97. sometimes it's called Egypt.

  98. But it's a consistent vision of the city

  99. organized in contempt against the living God

  100. and in rebellion against the living God.

  101. Babylon sort of becomes a symbol throughout the book of Revelation

  102. for the city and all that the city means.

  103. That means culture, it means government, it means education,

  104. it means commerce,

  105. it means just the normal way that life is organized

  106. and the city is organized in a preeminent way

  107. in contempt against the living God

  108. and in rebellion against the living God.

  109. And in chapter 17,

  110. we see it described

  111. and we're told of its doom.

  112. And in chapter 18,

  113. we now sort of get the judgment

  114. that God makes on it

  115. and two types of responses to that judgment.

  116. But it begins with this

  117. interesting comment on glory.

  118. Look at verse 1.

  119. After this, I saw another angel

  120. coming down from heaven,

  121. having great authority,

  122. and the earth was made bright

  123. with his glory.

  124. Sort of notice that here,

  125. and it's a very easy thing for us to misread

  126. what's happening in text.

  127. Look at it again.

  128. Having great authority.

  129. I saw another angel coming down from heaven,

  130. having great authority,

  131. and the earth was made bright

  132. with his glory.

  133. I like watching movies.

  134. I like watching superhero movies.

  135. I'm looking forward to seeing

  136. the next Captain America movie

  137. that's already come out.

  138. I haven't seen it yet.

  139. I enjoy the first Iron Man movie very much

  140. and the other ones to certain degrees.

  141. And the problem is that,

  142. not the problem,

  143. but if you've watched Iron Man movies

  144. or have watched any of the Avengers movies,

  145. I'm going to maybe get some of the details

  146. a little bit wrong

  147. because I'm not a Marvel comic geek

  148. that always remembers all the details

  149. of the made-up science and mythology,

  150. but Iron Man is, of course,

  151. a billionaire who, of course,

  152. is good-looking,

  153. who, of course, is witty,

  154. who, of course, is a genius,

  155. and, of course,

  156. he's able to invent a metal suit

  157. that allows him to fly,

  158. and it's all powered by,

  159. I think it's some type of

  160. cold fusion type of thing

  161. that's just a little small thing

  162. that goes right there in his chest,

  163. keeps him alive,

  164. and it creates enough power.

  165. I don't know,

  166. they said an early thing about,

  167. I don't know,

  168. it could power all these cities

  169. for all these decades forever,

  170. and he doesn't need all that.

  171. It means he can fly faster than jet planes

  172. and do like this with his hands

  173. and knock walls down

  174. and tanks and people,

  175. and what guy wouldn't be able

  176. to like to do that?

  177. I can't speak for girls,

  178. but what guy doesn't wish

  179. he could just do that

  180. and go, woof,

  181. and the power just knocks things down?

  182. So anyway, this is Iron Man,

  183. but in many ways,

  184. what happens to us

  185. when we think of glory,

  186. we think of something like Iron Man,

  187. because Iron Man has all the power

  188. in and of himself, right?

  189. And so when we think of this angel coming down,

  190. we think a little bit of like Iron Man coming down,

  191. because you see,

  192. in our hearts of hearts,

  193. all of us like to say,

  194. I'm the man,

  195. I'm the man,

  196. because we sort of think

  197. that there's glory in us

  198. that comes out.

  199. But every time the Bible talks about glory,

  200. and especially in the book of Revelation,

  201. it's really trying to communicate

  202. a very different image to us.

  203. Image would be something like this.

  204. I'm out maybe somewhere,

  205. you know,

  206. I'm lost in the woods

  207. or something like that.

  208. I'm with maybe my little granddaughter,

  209. Bria,

  210. five years old,

  211. and we come across,

  212. you know,

  213. like sort of an old cottage,

  214. and we're sort of going to take some shelter in there.

  215. And for some reason,

  216. I want to go and look at something.

  217. Maybe I think I can hook something up.

  218. And I can't get any light.

  219. I don't have any matches or anything.

  220. But I notice that there's a mirror.

  221. I take the mirror down

  222. and I give it to my little five-year-old granddaughter,

  223. Bria,

  224. and I say,

  225. Bria,

  226. if you just stand here right like this,

  227. and the sunlight will come in and hit this mirror.

  228. And if you just point it like this,

  229. the sunlight will come and hit the mirror

  230. and bounce into the spot that I want to see

  231. and get some work done

  232. and maybe it'll help us.

  233. And virtually every time in the Bible,

  234. every time in the Bible,

  235. actually it's talking about true glory.

  236. The image we should think of

  237. is a five-year-old little girl

  238. holding a mirror

  239. that catches the sun

  240. and shines into a dark place.

  241. We should never think of Iron Man.

  242. We should think of a little five-year-old girl

  243. holding the mirror

  244. that reflects the sunlight

  245. into the darkness.

  246. Here's the first point.

  247. There is no autonomous glory.

  248. The Bible says there is no autonomous glory.

  249. Period.

  250. All true glory of created things

  251. is a reflected glory from the living God.

  252. There is no autonomous glory,

  253. a glory in and of ourselves,

  254. an Iron Man-type glory.

  255. There is no such glory.

  256. We might think,

  257. I'm the man,

  258. I'm the man, you know?

  259. Jeremiah might leave after service going,

  260. I'm the man.

  261. George might leave after service going,

  262. I'm the man, you know?

  263. But there is no autonomous glory.

  264. You know,

  265. the President of the United States,

  266. the President of Russia,

  267. the Prime Minister of Canada,

  268. might go,

  269. I'm the man, I'm the man.

  270. There is no autonomous glory.

  271. All true glory of created things

  272. is a reflected glory

  273. from the living God.

  274. See,

  275. that's why it is

  276. that the Bible can talk about

  277. how the heavens declare the glory of God,

  278. the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

  279. The heavens declare the glory of God.

  280. The image underneath there

  281. is it's somehow or another

  282. the stars and the moon

  283. and just the sky

  284. and later on in other parts

  285. in the Old Testament,

  286. in the New Testament,

  287. in the trees and the rivers,

  288. that it's not that these things,

  289. and it's not that when we see

  290. an unbelievably beautiful sunset

  291. that we're seeing something autonomous

  292. and separate from God,

  293. but we see the created order

  294. properly turned

  295. at least for a moment

  296. to reflect the glory

  297. that ultimately comes from God.

  298. The glory to which

  299. we are called to,

  300. and we as fallen,

  301. bent human beings,

  302. at times,

  303. we reflect the glory of God

  304. because there is no autonomous glory.

  305. All true glory of created things

  306. is a reflective glory

  307. from the living God.

  308. See,

  309. that's why Christians aren't dualists.

  310. It's why Christians aren't Buddhists.

  311. It's not,

  312. we're Hindus.

  313. It's not that we think

  314. that the material world

  315. is an illusion.

  316. It's not that we think

  317. that the material world

  318. is a prison.

  319. It's not that we think

  320. that the material world

  321. isn't as important

  322. as soul or spirit.

  323. It's none of those types of things.

  324. The soul is created.

  325. Angels are created.

  326. My mind is created.

  327. Trees are created.

  328. Rivers are created.

  329. Angels are created.

  330. Sheep are created.

  331. And all creative things

  332. have the power

  333. to reflect the glory

  334. of the living God.

  335. My mind and my body

  336. can reflect the glory

  337. of the living God.

  338. That's what the Bible teaches.

  339. That's how we are to understand.

  340. And you can sort of see it

  341. a little tiny bit

  342. here in the text.

  343. It's more obvious

  344. than the original language.

  345. Look at verse one again.

  346. After this,

  347. I saw another angel

  348. coming down from heaven.

  349. And it's because he's coming down

  350. from heaven

  351. that he has great glory.

  352. And it's because he's coming down

  353. from heaven

  354. that the earth was made bright

  355. with his glory.

  356. He's aligned with heaven.

  357. He's reflecting that glory.

  358. And as he reflects the glory,

  359. it illuminates the earth.

  360. And the implication

  361. and the invitation is

  362. that for we who also

  363. are trying to align ourselves

  364. with God,

  365. that that glory goes

  366. and shines as well through us,

  367. through broken,

  368. ordinary people

  369. like you and me.

  370. Now some of you might say,

  371. George, that's all,

  372. that's sort of very,

  373. that's interesting.

  374. But,

  375. George,

  376. the thing about this text,

  377. and sometimes,

  378. George, you do this,

  379. you know,

  380. you pick on something

  381. really at the beginning

  382. of the text.

  383. And I'm almost worried

  384. sometimes, George,

  385. you'll stop preaching then

  386. so you don't have to deal

  387. with the fact

  388. that, you know,

  389. the problem in this text,

  390. George, for me,

  391. isn't the early parts,

  392. it's verse 20.

  393. It's verse 20

  394. where it sounds

  395. like God is telling people

  396. to rejoice

  397. over the destruction

  398. of people.

  399. It's not that they're all

  400. clapping their hands

  401. to the choir

  402. and clapping their hands

  403. to the praise song

  404. or even that all of a sudden

  405. something weird

  406. happens to the congregation

  407. and it's like a

  408. Joyce Meyer congregation

  409. and they all clap

  410. every time you make

  411. a good point.

  412. The problem isn't,

  413. that isn't the problem,

  414. George,

  415. the problem is

  416. that it's as if,

  417. look at verse 20,

  418. it's as if,

  419. it's as if after all

  420. the judgments are talked about

  421. that they're saying,

  422. okay, let's rejoice,

  423. rejoice,

  424. for God has given judgment

  425. against this city

  426. and that,

  427. George,

  428. that's the problem

  429. with this text

  430. and I hope you don't just say,

  431. oh, well,

  432. we're going to get up

  433. to verse 13

  434. and I've run out of time

  435. and off you go.

  436. Like, you have to deal

  437. with this, George.

  438. It's a very, very good thing.

  439. It's an important part

  440. of the text

  441. and so let's actually,

  442. we are going to get there

  443. but to get there

  444. we have to first see

  445. something in verse 2

  446. because the text

  447. actually has a great consistency

  448. of talking about

  449. not only God's glory

  450. but of justice

  451. and of the appropriate way

  452. to respond to justice,

  453. the call to justice

  454. and it's all in the text

  455. which leads us

  456. to that verse.

  457. Let's look at verse 2.

  458. The angel comes,

  459. sorry, verse 1,

  460. so the angel comes down

  461. and the angel,

  462. in verse 2,

  463. he called out

  464. with a mighty voice,

  465. fallen,

  466. fallen is Babylon the great.

  467. She has become

  468. a dwelling place

  469. for demons,

  470. a haunt

  471. for every unclean spirit,

  472. a haunt

  473. for every unclean bird,

  474. a haunt

  475. for every unclean

  476. and detestable beast.

  477. In other words,

  478. it's become a place

  479. where no proper thinking

  480. human being

  481. would now want to go.

  482. No, if you were there

  483. you wouldn't turn

  484. your back on anybody.

  485. verse 3,

  486. for all nations

  487. have drunk the wine

  488. of the passion

  489. of her sexual immorality

  490. and the kings of the earth

  491. have committed immorality

  492. with her

  493. and the merchants

  494. of the earth

  495. have grown rich

  496. from the power

  497. of her luxurious living

  498. and immorality here

  499. is a,

  500. it's an image

  501. of the merchants

  502. and the kings

  503. just can't get enough

  504. of what a city

  505. organized

  506. in contempt

  507. against God

  508. and rebellion

  509. against God

  510. and we're going to see

  511. in a moment

  512. what that sort of entails,

  513. what it looks like

  514. and all these merchants

  515. and the kings

  516. they just can't get

  517. enough of that.

  518. They just can't get

  519. enough of contempt

  520. of that.

  521. They can't get enough

  522. of that rebellion.

  523. They can't get enough

  524. of,

  525. as we'll see in the text,

  526. economic exploitation.

  527. They can't get enough

  528. of sorcery.

  529. They can't get enough

  530. of having slaves.

  531. They just can't get

  532. enough of oppressing.

  533. They just can't get enough

  534. of killing innocent

  535. human life.

  536. They just can't get

  537. enough of that

  538. and that,

  539. the image of sexual

  540. immorality is,

  541. it's an image

  542. of passion

  543. as if when a couple,

  544. they just can't get,

  545. you know,

  546. enough of a person

  547. who's another man's wife

  548. or another,

  549. a woman's husband

  550. and they just can't

  551. get enough of it

  552. and that's the image

  553. behind it

  554. of the judgment

  555. not only on Babylon

  556. but of these other kings

  557. and the merchants

  558. and the sailors

  559. and the political class

  560. and the cultural class

  561. and the educational class

  562. and all of these classes

  563. that just,

  564. they can't get enough.

  565. They can't get enough.

  566. They can't get enough

  567. of something

  568. that God ultimately

  569. is saying has fallen

  570. and that in its heart

  571. it's a haunt

  572. of demons

  573. and unclean beasts

  574. and unclean things.

  575. That's the image.

  576. Verse four will continue.

  577. Then I heard another

  578. voice from heaven

  579. saying,

  580. come out of her,

  581. my people,

  582. lest you take part

  583. in her sins,

  584. lest you share

  585. and her plagues

  586. for her sins

  587. are heaped high as heaven

  588. and God has remembered

  589. her iniquities.

  590. Virtually every time

  591. in the Bible

  592. when it says

  593. that God has remembered

  594. you should understand

  595. that God remembers

  596. to act.

  597. That's the implication

  598. of the image.

  599. God remembers

  600. to act.

  601. When he remembers

  602. he's acting.

  603. Verse six,

  604. pay her back

  605. as she herself

  606. has paid back others

  607. and repay her double

  608. for her deeds.

  609. Mix a double portion

  610. for her in the cup

  611. she mixed.

  612. Just pause.

  613. That's not like

  614. a double-double

  615. from Tim Hortons.

  616. It's not saying

  617. that she should get

  618. twice as much

  619. as what she's done.

  620. It's an image

  621. of full,

  622. up to the brim.

  623. When I go to Starbucks

  624. I like my coffee

  625. either black

  626. or next to black

  627. and so when they ask me

  628. how,

  629. I always say

  630. I have my coffee black

  631. because I don't want

  632. to get a coffee cup

  633. and have like

  634. an inch and a half

  635. of space between

  636. the coffee

  637. and the top.

  638. I want them to get it

  639. right to the top.

  640. And that's the image here.

  641. Make sure

  642. that the cup

  643. is completely full.

  644. That's the image

  645. of double.

  646. Verse seven,

  647. as she glorified herself

  648. and lived in luxury

  649. so give her

  650. a like measure

  651. of torment

  652. and mourning

  653. since in her heart

  654. she says,

  655. I sit as a queen.

  656. No,

  657. verse seven again,

  658. she glorified herself,

  659. right?

  660. Her entire ideology,

  661. I am the man,

  662. I am the man,

  663. I am the man.

  664. That's her theme song.

  665. Okay.

  666. And then it shows itself

  667. out in verse seven

  668. in the middle.

  669. I sit as a queen,

  670. I am no widow

  671. and mourning,

  672. grieving,

  673. I shall never see.

  674. For this reason

  675. her plagues

  676. will come in a single day,

  677. death and mourning

  678. and famine

  679. and she will be

  680. burned up with fire

  681. for mighty is the Lord God

  682. who has judged her.

  683. And this word judged here

  684. is an important word.

  685. It actually is a word

  686. that's,

  687. by pointing to this word

  688. you can get a bit

  689. of an understanding

  690. of underneath

  691. in the original language

  692. underneath a lot

  693. of the images

  694. up until here

  695. and all the way through.

  696. It's a specifically

  697. legal image

  698. from the law courts.

  699. And so what's being

  700. presented here

  701. a little bit

  702. is an image

  703. and this might help

  704. us a little bit

  705. with understanding

  706. what's going on

  707. in the text.

  708. Imagine for a second

  709. that there's a company

  710. that knowingly

  711. put some type

  712. of toxic substance

  713. in a whole pile

  714. of products

  715. and tens of thousands

  716. of people

  717. either died

  718. or were made

  719. severely ill.

  720. And so in our culture

  721. a class action suit

  722. was brought

  723. by these tens

  724. of thousands

  725. of people

  726. who've been damaged

  727. by this company

  728. that knowingly

  729. did the wrong thing

  730. and you go to court.

  731. And so the image

  732. here very simply

  733. is on one hand

  734. there is the plaintiff,

  735. this company

  736. that willingly did

  737. something

  738. to cause lots

  739. of damage.

  740. And on the other side

  741. are the defendants

  742. and the defendants

  743. are the ones

  744. who've suffered

  745. underneath

  746. what the plaintiffs,

  747. what the defendants

  748. have done

  749. and the plaintiffs

  750. have gone to court

  751. about it

  752. and God

  753. is the judge.

  754. So in this particular,

  755. the image is

  756. that Babylon

  757. is the defendant

  758. and if you go

  759. to the end

  760. of the text,

  761. go to the end

  762. of Revelation chapter 18

    Revelation 18 chapter mention

  763. you'll see

  764. that the plaintiffs

  765. are the followers

  766. of Jesus

  767. and every innocent

  768. who's died

  769. as a result

  770. of Babylon's action.

  771. We're the plaintiffs.

  772. All the innocent dead

  773. and all the followers

  774. of Jesus

  775. are the plaintiffs.

  776. Babylon is the defendant,

  777. God is the judge

  778. and Revelation 18

  779. is God pronouncing

  780. his judgment.

  781. Babylon is guilty,

  782. the defendants

  783. are vindicated

  784. and just as you would see

  785. in a law court

  786. if something like that

  787. was to happen today,

  788. you would see

  789. the plaintiffs

  790. cheering,

  791. that's partly

  792. a key part

  793. of the image

  794. here

  795. because it's an image

  796. of a law court.

  797. But there's something

  798. far more significant

  799. to the text

  800. to help us understand

  801. the jubilation

  802. and Andrew

  803. if you could put up

  804. the next point

  805. it's this,

  806. that God's justice

  807. is so high

  808. and so humble

  809. that when I face it

  810. and I should probably

  811. have said him,

  812. I will fall short

  813. and I will have

  814. no valid excuse

  815. or rebuttal.

  816. God's justice

  817. is both

  818. so high

  819. and so humble

  820. that when I face it

  821. I will fall short

  822. and I will have

  823. no valid excuse

  824. or rebuttal.

  825. Here's what I mean.

  826. A lot of people

  827. when they start to hear

  828. about the Christian faith

  829. and Christians struggle

  830. with this as well

  831. and on one level

  832. if you read through

  833. the book of Revelation

  834. and even this text

  835. it portrays

  836. the complete

  837. and utter

  838. perfect justice

  839. of God.

  840. God is perfectly

  841. just,

  842. he's perfectly

  843. sovereign,

  844. he's perfectly

  845. good,

  846. he is the perfect

  847. creator,

  848. he is the perfect

  849. sustainer,

  850. he is the perfect

  851. end of all things,

  852. everything about God

  853. is perfect,

  854. he's in heaven,

  855. Babylon can rage

  856. against him,

  857. the dragon can rage

  858. against him,

  859. the beast can rage

  860. against him,

  861. the false prophet

  862. can rage against him,

  863. the armies can gather

  864. in Armageddon

  865. to rage against him

  866. but he is so high

  867. above them,

  868. this is all completely,

  869. this is like microbes

  870. right now

  871. being mad at us,

  872. okay,

  873. microbes in this room

  874. are angry at you

  875. and they have nothing,

  876. they're nothing,

  877. they're microbes

  878. and we're people,

  879. we don't even know

  880. they exist,

  881. not that God knows

  882. they exist,

  883. he's active in all this

  884. but God is high

  885. and so many people

  886. when they see this text

  887. and they hear about

  888. God's judgment

  889. they say,

  890. George,

  891. how on earth

  892. could me appearing

  893. before God

  894. ever be fair?

  895. It would be a little bit,

  896. George,

  897. like all of a sudden

  898. you having to go

  899. in a week's time

  900. and you go with

  901. all the engineering

  902. students at Ottawa U

  903. and you take

  904. Calculus 2 final exam,

  905. okay,

  906. let me tell you right now

  907. if I had to take

  908. the Calculus 2 final exam

  909. with all those

  910. engineering students,

  911. the only way

  912. I wouldn't get zero

  913. is if they give you

  914. a mark

  915. for spelling your name right

  916. on the booklet,

  917. okay,

  918. if they allowed me

  919. a mark

  920. for spelling

  921. George Sinclair correctly,

  922. I could go home

  923. and say,

  924. Louise,

  925. I got 1%

  926. on that exam,

  927. 1%,

  928. but if they don't

  929. allow a mark

  930. for that,

  931. it's zero.

  932. In fact,

  933. I would look at it,

  934. I was a very,

  935. very bad student

  936. in first year university,

  937. like I was a really

  938. bad student,

  939. nobody took attendance,

  940. nothing happened,

  941. I remember

  942. it was a full year

  943. course,

  944. I went to take

  945. my economics exam,

  946. no,

  947. it was a take home exam,

  948. I got my take home exam

  949. and I think,

  950. I'm just going to be able

  951. to blow this off,

  952. I'll just look it up

  953. in the book,

  954. I'll be able to answer this,

  955. I was so far behind,

  956. I couldn't understand

  957. a single question

  958. to know where

  959. to look it up,

  960. okay,

  961. and that would be

  962. way ahead of me

  963. doing a calculus exam,

  964. so you see,

  965. a lot of people

  966. when they think

  967. of God's high justice,

  968. they think,

  969. how on earth

  970. could this ever be fair,

  971. George,

  972. look at how perfect

  973. God is,

  974. how on earth,

  975. and so,

  976. the book of Revelation

  977. not only communicates

  978. how high God's justice is,

  979. but if you look

  980. at verse six,

  981. it's a really important verse

  982. and it's repeated

  983. in different forms

  984. all the way

  985. through this text

  986. and it's a very,

  987. very important verse

  988. and it says this,

  989. pay her back

  990. as she herself

  991. has paid back others,

  992. pay her back

  993. as she has paid back,

  994. she herself

  995. has paid back others,

  996. and so,

  997. what it's doing,

  998. this is showing

  999. the humility

  1000. of God's justice,

  1001. so God says,

  1002. so I make this

  1003. complaint to God,

  1004. I'm at the justice,

  1005. the final throne

  1006. of judgment,

  1007. I say to God,

  1008. come on God,

  1009. it's like making me

  1010. do calculus too

  1011. with all the engineering

  1012. students,

  1013. okay,

  1014. like that's not fair,

  1015. and so God says,

  1016. okay George,

  1017. I'm going to accept

  1018. for a moment

  1019. that that's not fair,

1020. you know what I'm going

  1021. to do?

  1022. I'm going to use

  1023. George's standard

  1024. of judgment

  1025. to judge George,

  1026. that's all I'm going

  1027. to do,

  1028. so George,

  1029. you just stand here,

1030. I'm just going to replay

  1031. a little bit

  1032. about when you're driving,

  1033. how you evaluate

  1034. other drivers,

  1035. when you're thinking

  1036. of other ministers,

  1037. how you evaluate

  1038. other ministers,

  1039. when you're thinking

  1040. of people's spiritual walk,

  1041. how you evaluate that,

1042. I'm just going to go

  1043. through all these evaluations,

1044. I'm just going to go

  1045. through your evaluations,

  1046. George,

  1047. we'll make a list,

  1048. now we're going

  1049. to replay your life,

  1050. and judge you

  1051. by your list,

  1052. and I would fail,

  1053. because I'm like

  1054. every one of you,

  1055. I in effect

  1056. live my life

  1057. like a pagan god,

  1058. believing I can

  1059. pass judgment

  1060. on others,

  1061. and I myself

  1062. am immune,

  1063. and separate

  1064. from the judgment

  1065. I pass on others

  1066. from that ever

  1067. being applied to me,

  1068. and I don't think

  1069. I'm being more evil

  1070. or wicked

  1071. than anyone here,

  1072. God will say that

  1073. to every single person,

  1074. okay,

  1075. I could judge you,

  1076. I have every right

  1077. to judge you

  1078. by my high

  1079. exalted standard,

  1080. I'll just judge you

  1081. by your standard,

  1082. my wife and I

  1083. at different times

  1084. have joked

  1085. that we wish

  1086. that we'd had

  1087. videotaped recordings,

  1088. we were the first

  1089. in our family,

  1090. and the first

  1091. in our circle

  1092. of friends to marry,

  1093. we were the first

  1094. in our circle

  1095. of friends

  1096. to have children,

  1097. and for many years

  1098. we wish that we

  1099. had videotaped

  1100. our friends

  1101. without children

  1102. commenting

  1103. on our child-rearing

  1104. practices,

  1105. so that when

  1106. they had children

  1107. we could play it

  1108. back for them,

  1109. and watch them

  1110. squirm,

  1111. and get red,

  1112. and terribly embarrassed,

  1113. and for the same

  1114. parents who have

  1115. this little trusting

  1116. two-year-old,

  1117. you know,

  1118. trusting two-year-olds,

  1119. and we have like

  1120. a 15-year-old

  1121. or a 13-year-old,

  1122. and the comments,

  1123. well, my child

  1124. will never do this,

  1125. my teenagers will,

  1126. we wish we could

  1127. have videotaped that,

  1128. and showed it back

  1129. to them when their

  1130. child turned 13 or 15,

  1131. once again,

  1132. to watch them squirm,

  1133. because the fact

  1134. of the matter is

  1135. is we pass judgments

  1136. all the time,

  1137. and don't think

  1138. that we ourselves

1139. have to live under it,

1140. and so verse 6 says

  1141. that what God

  1142. does to Babylon

  1143. is God uses

  1144. Babylon's standard

  1145. of justice

  1146. to judge Babylon,

  1147. see, that's why

1148. in the book of Romans

1149. and the book of Revelation,

  1150. the message is

  1151. that God's justice

  1152. is so high

1153. and is also so humble

1154. that when I face it,

  1155. I will fall short

  1156. and I will have

  1157. no valid excuse

  1158. or rebuttal.

1159. How is God going to

  1160. deal with evil?

1161. How is God going to

  1162. deal with people

  1163. who have never heard

  1164. of Jesus?

  1165. I don't know.

  1166. I don't know.

  1167. I don't know all

  1168. of the intricacies

  1169. of his mercy.

  1170. I don't know.

  1171. I know what I know

  1172. about God.

  1173. What I know

  1174. with unshakable certainty

1175. is that God is just.

  1176. What I know

  1177. with unshakable certainty

1178. is that God is merciful,

  1179. that he is good.

  1180. And what I know

  1181. with unshakable certainty

1182. is that if you or I,

  1183. when you or I,

  1184. stand before God

1185. with all of their humanity,

  1186. we will not hear

  1187. a single judgment

  1188. made by God

1189. on any single human being,

1190. and we will not say

  1191. that God was wrong

  1192. and that they had,

1193. that there was any excuse

1194. that they could have used.

  1195. I have that.

  1196. I believe that.

1197. The more I read the Bible,

1198. the more I am completely

  1199. and utterly certain

  1200. about that.

1201. I'm willing to have speculation.

  1202. I'm willing to talk.

1203. But the bottom line is

1204. no one will have an excuse.

1205. That's what the Bible teaches.

  1206. Now,

  1207. the question then

  1208. is

  1209. how do we respond

  1210. when we get caught?

  1211. How do we respond

1212. when we, in a sense,

1213. have to stand before God?

1214. That's one of the things

1215. that really drives the text.

  1216. In our own lives,

  1217. how do we respond?

  1218. I mean,

  1219. there's us doing wrong

1220. and nobody catches us at it.

1221. But the really interesting question

  1222. in our own lives

1223. is when we get caught out

  1224. doing something wrong,

  1225. how actually is it

1226. that we're responding to it?

  1227. Like,

  1228. for a married man

  1229. getting caught

  1230. watching pornography,

  1231. and he gets caught

1232. by maybe his best friend

  1233. or by his wife

  1234. or daughter or son,

  1235. how does he respond

  1236. how does he respond

  1237. to that?

  1238. Is partly

  1239. how he responds

  1240. is it

  1241. not that

  1242. is a large part

  1243. of his response

  1244. grieving,

  1245. mourning,

  1246. because he's been caught?

  1247. is it

  1248. because

  1249. now

  1250. he has

  1251. less status

  1252. or prestige?

  1253. Is he

  1254. grieving

  1255. and worried

  1256. that now

  1257. they're going

  1258. to put

  1259. some type

  1260. of control

  1261. on the computer

1262. and they won't be able

  1263. to watch

  1264. the pornography game?

  1265. Or is he

  1266. grieving

  1267. because what

  1268. he's done

  1269. is truly wrong?

  1270. And there's

  1271. many,

  1272. many,

  1273. many,

  1274. many areas

  1275. in our lives

  1276. where that type

  1277. of question,

  1278. it's a bit

  1279. of a subtle question,

  1280. but it's a very,

  1281. very profound

  1282. difference,

  1283. and it's this

  1284. very question

  1285. which the Bible

  1286. text here

  1287. now presses

  1288. in on,

  1289. that after

  1290. Babylon

  1291. is judged,

  1292. even by its

  1293. own standards,

  1294. what's the

  1295. response to this?

  1296. Like,

  1297. how is the

  1298. response working?

  1299. And that's

  1300. what happens

  1301. from verses

  1302. 9 right

  1303. through to

  1304. verse 19,

  1305. and it's

  1306. an important

  1307. thing to see

  1308. in the text,

  1309. and it's an

  1310. important thing

  1311. for our own

  1312. lives,

  1313. in terms of

  1314. how is it

  1315. that God

  1316. wants us

  1317. to respond

  1318. to having

  1319. his just

  1320. standard

  1321. come against

  1322. us,

  1323. so that we

  1324. realize what

  1325. that just

  1326. standard is,

  1327. and it's

  1328. sort of revealed.

  1329. How is it

  1330. that God

  1331. wants us

  1332. to respond?

  1333. Look at how

  1334. it works

  1335. in the text,

  1336. verse 9.

  1337. And the kings

  1338. of the earth

  1339. who committed

  1340. sexual immorality,

  1341. that's the image

  1342. I explained

  1343. earlier,

  1344. and lived in

  1345. luxury with

  1346. Babylon,

  1347. will weep and

  1348. wail over her

  1349. when they see

  1350. the smoke of

  1351. her burning.

  1352. They will

  1353. stand far

  1354. off in

  1355. fear of

  1356. her torment

  1357. and say,

  1358. alas,

  1359. alas,

  1360. you great

  1361. city,

  1362. you mighty

  1363. city Babylon,

  1364. for in a

  1365. single hour

  1366. your judgment

  1367. has come.

  1368. And the

  1369. merchants of

  1370. the earth

  1371. weep and

  1372. mourn for

  1373. her,

  1374. since no one

  1375. buys their

  1376. cargo anymore,

  1377. cargo of gold

  1378. and jewels,

  1379. and it keeps

  1380. going,

  1381. and the real,

  1382. if you sort of

  1383. skim through them

  1384. to the end of

  1385. verse 13,

  1386. sheep and

  1387. cattle and

  1388. sheep and

  1389. horses and

  1390. chariots and

  1391. slaves,

  1392. that is human

  1393. souls,

  1394. there's a bit

  1395. of a pause,

  1396. this is a

  1397. profound critique

  1398. of slavery.

  1399. It's a profound

  1400. critique of the

  1401. slave labor that

  1402. still exists in

  1403. many parts of

  1404. the Muslim world,

  1405. there's a profound

  1406. critique of

  1407. slavery that

  1408. exists in

  1409. China,

  1410. an atheistic

  1411. government,

  1412. that still has

  1413. slave labor,

  1414. it is a profound

  1415. critique of

  1416. the sex trafficking

  1417. which is a

  1418. very common

  1419. form of

  1420. slavery in

  1421. our modern

  1422. world,

  1423. women made

  1424. virtually to

  1425. live as

  1426. slaves to

  1427. give sexual

  1428. favors to

  1429. men for

  1430. the money of

  1431. the men who

  1432. own these

  1433. women as

  1434. chattel,

  1435. for the

  1436. child labor

  1437. that exists in

  1438. many parts of

  1439. the world,

  1440. people,

  1441. it's a form

  1442. of slavery

  1443. and this is a

  1444. profound

  1445. rebuke.

  1446. And it's

  1447. specifically designed

  1448. in the text,

  1449. okay,

  1450. the person,

  1451. he has a dog,

  1452. he has a cow,

  1453. he has a horse,

  1454. he has an oxen,

  1455. he has Joe,

  1456. and it's just

  1457. for the slave

  1458. owner,

  1459. there's no

  1460. difference,

  1461. the dog,

  1462. the oxen,

  1463. the horse,

  1464. the cow,

  1465. Joe,

  1466. Sally,

  1467. Betty,

  1468. and the text

  1469. says human.

  1470. Human soul,

  1471. it's a profound,

  1472. profound critique

  1473. of the institution

  1474. of slavery.

  1475. And then look how

  1476. it goes in verse

  1477. 14,

  1478. the fruit for which

  1479. your soul longed

  1480. has gone from

  1481. you,

  1482. and all your

  1483. delicacies and

  1484. your splendors are

  1485. lost to you,

  1486. never to be found

  1487. again.

  1488. The merchants of

  1489. these wares who

  1490. gain wealth from

  1491. her will stand

  1492. far off in fear

  1493. of her torment,

  1494. weeping and

  1495. mourning aloud,

  1496. alas,

  1497. alas,

  1498. for the great

  1499. city that was

  1500. clothed in fine

  1501. linen and

  1502. purple and

  1503. scarlet,

  1504. adorned with

  1505. gold,

  1506. with jewels

  1507. and with

  1508. pearls,

  1509. for a single,

  1510. in a single

  1511. hour all this

  1512. wealth has

  1513. been laid

  1514. waste.

  1515. And we'll

  1516. just sort of

  1517. pause there.

  1518. You see what

  1519. they're longing

  1520. in their

  1521. mourning?

  1522. It's as if

  1523. these merchants

  1524. are saying,

  1525. oh,

  1526. Babylon's

  1527. destroyed,

  1528. all the gold,

  1529. remember all the

  1530. gold we used

  1531. to have?

  1532. I'm going to

  1533. miss that gold.

  1534. Oh,

  1535. the great

  1536. meals,

  1537. all the

  1538. great meals

  1539. destroyed,

  1540. I'm going to

  1541. miss that.

  1542. Oh,

  1543. the slaves,

  1544. all the

  1545. slaves I

  1546. owned,

  1547. I'm going

  1548. to miss

  1549. it.

  1550. What you

  1551. see in the

  1552. response to

  1553. Babylon's

  1554. judgment,

  1555. and the

  1556. text is,

  1557. the implication

  1558. in the text

  1559. is that they

  1560. recognize that

  1561. the suddenness

  1562. of Babylon's

  1563. judgment and

  1564. doom indicates

  1565. that something,

  1566. someone like

  1567. God has been

  1568. at work,

  1569. and they

  1570. see this,

  1571. and they

  1572. know this,

  1573. but what

  1574. characterizes

  1575. their grieving

  1576. is that their

  1577. grieving is

  1578. self-centered,

  1579. that their

  1580. grieving consists

  1581. of hiding

  1582. from God,

  1583. their grieving

  1584. consists of

  1585. wishing that

  1586. the pleasure

  1587. that they had

  1588. will return.

  1589. The grieving

  1590. they have is

  1591. that they grieve

  1592. that they've

  1593. lost their

  1594. status and

  1595. their power

  1596. and their

  1597. prestige,

  1598. but none

  1599. of them

  1600. says,

  1601. what was I

  1602. thinking

  1603. owning a

  1604. slave?

  1605. What was I

  1606. thinking

  1607. exploiting my

  1608. workers?

  1609. What was I

  1610. thinking

  1611. using my

  1612. power to

  1613. force people

  1614. to sell

  1615. things to me

  1616. really cheap

  1617. that I could

  1618. sell them

  1619. for a huge

  1620. profit?

  1621. What on

  1622. earth was I

  1623. thinking?

  1624. Never enters

  1625. their head.

  1626. Here's the

  1627. point.

  1628. Put it up,

  1629. Andrew.

  1630. there is a

  1631. godly grief

  1632. that leads

  1633. to life

  1634. and a

  1635. worldly

  1636. grief that

  1637. leads to

  1638. death.

  1639. There is a

  1640. godly grief

  1641. that leads

  1642. to life

  1643. and a

  1644. worldly

  1645. grief that

  1646. leads to

  1647. death.

  1648. And what we

  1649. see here,

  1650. we see it

  1651. with the

  1652. kings,

  1653. we see it

  1654. with the

  1655. merchants,

  1656. and we see

  1657. it with

  1658. the sailors,

  1659. which I

  1660. won't bother

  1661. reading,

  1662. is that in

  1663. every case,

  1664. they're not

  1665. actually

  1666. concerned that

  1667. what they've

  1668. done is

  1669. wrong.

  1670. And their

  1671. reaction to

  1672. God revealing

  1673. himself and

  1674. revealing the

  1675. wrong is to

  1676. hide or to

  1677. flee, in a

  1678. sense to

  1679. retrench and

  1680. get more

  1681. resources and

  1682. more power.

  1683. Isn't that

  1684. often how it

  1685. works with the

  1686. powerful?

  1687. That when

  1688. something's about

  1689. to be revealed

  1690. that's going to

  1691. make them look

  1692. weak, our

  1693. response is not

  1694. repentance,

  1695. but get

  1696. more power.

  1697. I'm going to

  1698. get in trouble,

  1699. I'm going to

  1700. get the better

  1701. lawyer, I'm

  1702. going to

  1703. outspend, and

  1704. I'm going to

  1705. get the better

  1706. lawyers to

  1707. beat these,

  1708. I'm going to

  1709. beat the

  1710. rap.

  1711. I'm going to

  1712. use my

  1713. skills to

  1714. talk my

  1715. wife around,

  1716. I'm going to

  1717. do that, I

  1718. don't want to

  1719. lose my

  1720. power, I

  1721. don't want to

  1722. lose my

  1723. prestige, and

  1724. there's a

  1725. grieving, there's

  1726. a sorrowing,

  1727. there's a

  1728. worrying about

  1729. what's going

  1730. on, but it's

  1731. not a

  1732. repentance based

  1733. on an

  1734. acknowledgement

  1735. that what

  1736. was done

  1737. was wrong.

  1738. It's a

  1739. grieving that

  1740. leads to

  1741. death, and

  1742. God wants us

  1743. to grieve in

  1744. a way that

  1745. involves repentance

  1746. and turning to

  1747. him and saying,

  1748. God, I don't

  1749. know, what I did

  1750. was wrong, I

  1751. see that it's

  1752. wrong, have you

  1753. any mercy for

  1754. me?

  1755. Can I be

  1756. relieved or

  1757. delivered from

  1758. this?

  1759. It's the

  1760. difference between

  1761. a man caught

  1762. watching pornography

  1763. who now spends

  1764. all his time

  1765. trying to figure

  1766. out how to

  1767. continue watching

  1768. pornography,

  1769. or the man who

  1770. says, I have a

  1771. problem, and I

  1772. want to amend my

  1773. life, God.

  1774. I want to amend

  1775. my life.

  1776. The Bible

  1777. here portrays

  1778. that there is a

  1779. choice that we

  1780. have between a

  1781. godly grief that

  1782. leads to life and

  1783. a worldly grief that

  1784. leads to death.

  1785. What is God's heart

  1786. for you and me?

  1787. What is his hope?

  1788. Next point.

  1789. What is God's hope

  1790. for me and you?

  1791. Choose life.

  1792. What is God's hope

  1793. for me and you?

  1794. Choose life.

  1795. Choose life.

  1796. Choose life.

  1797. The cry of the

  1798. Old Testament, the

  1799. cry of the New

  1800. Testament, choose

  1801. life.

  1802. Choosing God is

  1803. choosing life.

  1804. Choosing repentance

  1805. is choosing life.

  1806. Now, some of you

  1807. might say, George,

  1808. here's the problem,

  1809. George.

  1810. Okay, you're talking

  1811. about sin and all

  1812. that type of stuff,

  1813. and you know, it

  1814. just sounds a little

  1815. bit like what you're

  1816. just saying is, you

  1817. know, the grovel,

  1818. grovel, grovel,

  1819. grovel, rules,

  1820. rules, rules, rules,

  1821. you know, sorry,

  1822. sorry, sorry,

  1823. sorry, maya culpa,

  1824. maya culpa,

  1825. maya culpa.

  1826. And you know,

  1827. George, if that's

  1828. just, like I can

  1829. sort of see how

  1830. people turn their

  1831. back on us.

  1832. I can see how

  1833. people say, let's

  1834. just live and let

  1835. live.

  1836. What's with all

  1837. this breast

  1838. beating?

  1839. I can see why

  1840. people want to be

  1841. spiritual and not

  1842. religious, because

  1843. religion just seems

  1844. to be about, first

  1845. we make a whole

  1846. pile of rules, then

  1847. we make a whole

  1848. pile of loopholes

  1849. to the rules, and

  1850. then if we get

  1851. caught breaking the

  1852. rules, well, we

  1853. either just sort of

  1854. say forget about it

  1855. and do something

  1856. completely and utterly

  1857. different, or,

  1858. you know, where we

  1859. just deal with the

  1860. shame.

  1861. The Bible here in

1862. the text shows us a

  1863. profound option.

1864. We, in our world, we

1865. tend to think that the

  1866. only options are being

  1867. highly religious, which

1868. is going to involve a

1869. lot of beating of our

  1870. breast and groveling,

  1871. or just basically doing

  1872. what we want, and

  1873. those are the two

  1874. options.

  1875. spirituality being sort

  1876. of close to doing

  1877. what you want, but

  1878. with some different

  1879. types of rules than

  1880. religious people, and

  1881. those are the two

  1882. options.

  1883. And the Bible here

  1884. gives us a completely

  1885. and utterly different

  1886. option.

1887. And it was earlier on

  1888. in the text, it's

  1889. verse 6, verse 6,

  1890. sorry, not verse 6,

  1891. it's verse 4.

  1892. Then I heard another

  1893. voice from heaven

  1894. saying, come out of

  1895. her my people.

  1896. Then I heard another

  1897. voice from heaven

  1898. saying, come out of

  1899. her my people.

  1900. Then I heard another

  1901. voice from heaven

  1902. saying, come out of

  1903. her my people.

  1904. The difference between

  1905. religion and being

  1906. completely and utterly

  1907. just, who cares about

  1908. right and wrong, just

1909. going to live and let

1910. live, just going to do

  1911. whatever I want.

  1912. Those aren't the two

  1913. options.

  1914. The option is that

1915. God, out of grace and

  1916. love, calls you.

1917. Calls me to a new

  1918. life.

  1919. He calls me.

  1920. One of the great

  1921. images in the New

  1922. Testament of what

1923. Jesus does for us is

  1924. the Bible never

  1925. portrays that there's

  1926. all these Christians

  1927. who never do anything

  1928. wrong because we're

  1929. very good at playing

  1930. religious games.

  1931. And on the other

  1932. hand, there are all

  1933. these other people who

1934. don't know how to play

  1935. all the religious games

  1936. and all the religious

  1937. rules.

1938. We don't know when to

  1939. raise our hands.

1940. We don't know when to

  1941. clap.

1942. We don't know when to

  1943. bow.

1944. We don't know how to

  1945. say all the words.

  1946. We can't keep straight

  1947. all that stuff.

  1948. The Bible doesn't say

1949. that those are the two

  1950. options.

  1951. The Bible says that

1952. every single one of us

  1953. is in a sense a citizen

  1954. of Babylon.

  1955. And that what happens

1956. on the cross is that

  1957. God who sees our

  1958. weakness and our love

  1959. for Babylon and our

  1960. inability to face what

1961. it is that we've done

  1962. wrong.

1963. And God sees us in

  1964. Babylon and he sends

1965. his son to die upon

1966. the cross so that the

  1967. justice and the doom

  1968. that I deserve, the

1969. judgment that I will not

  1970. be able to withstand

  1971. even under George's

  1972. rules, that that will

  1973. fall on Jesus.

1974. That will fall on him

  1975. in my stead.

1976. And he calls to George

1977. in Babylon and he says

  1978. to me, George in

  1979. Babylon, I want you

  1980. to be my people.

  1981. Come to me.

  1982. Come to Jesus.

  1983. In your place,

  1984. condemned, he stood.

1985. The call here is not

  1986. to the religious.

1987. It's not to the people

1988. who do not need Jesus.

1989. The call is to the

  1990. citizens of Babylon.

1991. That when we put our

1992. faith and trust in Jesus,

  1993. the Bible describes us

  1994. as being transferred

  1995. from Babylon to being

  1996. my people.

  1997. Here's the point.

1998. You can put it up,

  1999. Andrew.

2000. In grace, he died for

  2001. me.

2002. In grace, he calls me.

2003. In grace, he saves me.

2004. And by his grace, new

2005. life is formed in me as

2006. I say yes to his call.

2007. In grace, he died for

  2008. me.

2009. In grace, he calls me.

2010. In grace, he saves me.

2011. And by his grace, new

2012. life is formed in me as

2013. I say yes to his call.

  2014. Because the Christian

2015. life begins when we say

2016. yes to the call of Jesus

  2017. to come to him.

  2018. It doesn't matter if we've

2019. lived our whole life in

  2020. Rockcliffe or if we've

2021. lived our whole life in a

  2022. trailer park.

  2023. It doesn't matter if we're

2024. serving on Parliament Hill or

2025. if we're living on the

  2026. streets.

2027. It doesn't matter if we

  2028. have a PhD or if we're

  2029. Down syndrome.

  2030. It doesn't.

  2031. None of the...

  2032. The Christian life begins

  2033. with ordinary people like

2034. you and me who are citizens

2035. of Babylon who say yes to

2036. the call of God in the

  2037. person of Jesus.

  2038. And that's how the

  2039. Christian life begins.

2040. And all of the revelations

2041. of God's judgment against the

2042. sin in our life as it is

2043. exposed is not just a

2044. revelation but a call to

  2045. come to Jesus.

2046. In fact, it's by grace as we

2047. realize that in my place

2048. condemned he stood that we

2049. can start to have the

2050. freedom and the hope to look

2051. at the evil that we do, the

2052. place of evil in our lives,

2053. and actually start to address

  2054. it.

2055. Because we understand that in

2056. grace he died for me.

2057. In grace he calls me.

2058. In grace he saves me.

2059. And by his grace new life is

2060. formed in me as I say yes to

  2061. his call.

2062. The Christian life isn't we say

2063. yes once and then we live a

  2064. life of religious rules.

2065. The Christian life is we say yes

  2066. to become his child.

2067. And then we live a life of

2068. constantly learning to hear his

2069. daily call to us to come to

  2070. him.

2071. Come to me all who labor and are

2072. heavy laden and I will give you

  2073. rest.

2074. Take my yoke upon you.

2075. For I am gentle and humble of

2076. heart and you will find rest for

  2077. your soul.

  2078. Please stand.

  2079. If you're here and you've never

2080. understood that Jesus is calling

2081. you, I didn't say this but if you

2082. go back there in the text, the

2083. voice, for textual reasons if you

2084. look through all the book of

2085. Revelation, the voice is Jesus.

2086. The voice that calls is Jesus.

2087. You look through all of Revelation,

  2088. you track it through.

  2089. That's who's speaking.

2090. And if there's anyone here who

2091. has never realized that Jesus is

2092. actually calling you to be his

2093. people, his person, there is no

  2094. better time than today.

  2095. Use your own words.

2096. Just say, Jesus, that's me.

  2097. I hear your call.

2098. I want to come to you.

  2099. I'm weak.

2100. I can't do it on my own.

2101. Jesus, please cross that infinite

2102. distance and come and take me to

  2103. yourself because I now know you've

2104. called me and I want to be yours.

2105. There's no better time than right

  2106. now before God.

  2107. Don't even finish, don't even stop

2108. listening to me and just say to

2109. Jesus, Jesus, I hear your call.

2110. I recognize that's the tug of my

  2111. heart.

  2112. Here I am.

  2113. Take me.

  2114. Here I am.

2115. Take me and keep me yours forever.

  2116. That's all you have.

  2117. Here I am.

  2118. Take me.

2119. For every one of us, God calls to

  2120. us.

2121. He never convicts of sin.

2122. Every conviction of sin by

2123. conscience is also a call from

2124. Jesus to come to him.

2125. To be gripped by the gospel and

2126. understand how because of what

2127. Jesus has done for the cross, we can

2128. be grounded in dealing with our

  2129. lives.

2130. We can be pushed into new life.

2131. We can be drawn into new life.

2132. We can be shaped into new life.

2133. There's no better time than now to

2134. say yes to that call.

2135. Bow our heads in prayer.

2136. Father, if there is any here who

2137. today has just taken, not my

2138. urging, Father, it's an urging that

2139. comes from the Holy Spirit that I

2140. just, Father, try in some small way to

2141. give voice to, that the pull and tug of

2142. their heart for the first time to

2143. realize that you have been calling them

2144. all their lives and that they are

  2145. hearing your call today.

2146. Father, may you pour out your Holy

  2147. Spirit upon people.

2148. Pour out your Holy Spirit and help

2149. them to say, here I am.

2150. Take me and never let me go, Jesus.

2151. And, Father, for myself and for

2152. others who hear your call in the face

2153. of things that we do in our lives that

2154. require amendment of life and

2155. repentance, Father, we just ask that

2156. your Holy Spirit would fall with

  2157. mighty power upon us.

2158. Help us, Father, to be delivered from

2159. the idea that the choice before us is

2160. a life of religious rules or a life

2161. of completely and utterly ignoring all

  2162. rules.

2163. Father, deliver us from such dichotomies

2164. and help us, Father, to hear the call of

2165. Jesus and come to him.

2166. Father, help me to hear the call of your

2167. son Jesus and come to him.

2168. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us

2169. and make us disciples gripped by the

2170. gospel, living for your glory.

2171. And this we pray in Jesus' name.

  2172. Amen.
