  1. Merry Christmas.

  2. Wow, that's much better than how's it going.

  3. Everybody usually, oh, oh, oh.

  4. Merry Christmas, better.

  5. Hey, so I figure I have about eight minutes before the kids attack me for the candy canes, okay?

  6. And so I just wanted to share with you a little bit about what we've been praying about,

  7. what we think the meaning of Christmas is about as we look at it and approach it this Christmas season.

  8. If you are the first time at Watermark, family, we're excited that you're here.

  9. My name is Tobin.

  10. I'm one of the teaching pastors here.

  11. What you see is what you get, chaos, raw, controlled, family together, and it's like that every Sunday.

  12. So if you don't have a church, please come join us.

  13. We need more chaos.

  14. You know, I love Christmas.

  15. There's something about Christmas in this season.

  16. It's an amazing adjective, isn't it, Christmas?

  17. Because whenever you put Christmas in front of something, it just makes it better.

  18. Or Christmas music, Christmas decorations, Christmas smells, seeing the kids' faces are amazing to me.

  19. Christmas food, just putting food in front of Christmas probably adds 10 pounds to Christmas food that we're going to eat this year.

  20. So we're going to have a scale next week, and we're going to weigh everybody to see how we've scaled, how much food we've gained and weight we've gained in that time.

  21. But, you know, the amazing thing as I think about this season is that all over the world, in thousands of languages,

  22. in amazing different countries, people are coming together, and they're worshiping the birth of a baby boy born in Bethlehem.

  23. A baby boy who would one day bring hope to all mankind.

  24. The story my kiddos just read there is the story of the first Christmas.

  25. And if you listen to that story, or if you read it again in your bulletin, what you're going to see is that there's this incredible contrast between fear and hope.

  26. Fear and hope.

  27. The contrast we see in the shepherds' lives, and when the shepherds see the angels, or whenever anybody meets God, or hears God, or is approached by God throughout all of Scripture,

  28. what you see is this incredible amount of fear in them.

  29. But then the words of the angels bring this comfort of hope.

  30. Now, I've been a pastor for almost 30 years now.

  31. And one of my jobs as a pastor is to counsel people like you.

  32. And I have the incredible privilege of coming into people's lives and to see what kind of things they struggle with.

  33. And what I realize is that all of us struggle with fear.

  34. Every one of us struggle with fear.

  35. I mean, the Bible says over 350 times, do not fear.

  36. And so when I read that in Scripture, what I realize is that we as humans must have something within our DNA that makes us fear.

  37. I mean, we fear failure.

  38. We fear rejection.

  39. We fear rejection by the people we love and by those people that we value.

  40. We fear the future.

  41. We fear being alone.

  42. We fear insignificance.

  43. And what I've seen is a pastor that almost all of us fear, probably every one of us fears death.

  44. And the Bible says that this struggle with fear that we all have began because of a broken relationship.

  45. The other passage in your bulletin is the passage of Genesis.

  46. And it talks about this beginning time.

  47. It talks about our parents.

  48. And at this moment when our parents decide to live life on their own, we see that this relationship with God is broken and fear comes into us.

  49. And fear didn't just come into Adam and Eve, but it came into all of their children.

  50. And so the Bible would say right now, you and I, we have fear in our DNA.

  51. And the scripture passage in the bulletin shows us immediately that Adam and Eve knew something was wrong.

  52. The minute they decided to go away from God, they knew something was wrong.

  53. They knew that the relationship was broken.

  54. And the response was to hide, to cover their fears, to hide themselves, to make it look like they are not in trouble.

  55. And we see in the passage that when God comes to talk to them in the garden, their only response to a holy, loving God is to hide, to hide themselves from him.

  56. Because they fear.

  57. Today, psychiatrists, psychologists, sociologists will tell you that we live in an age of fear.

  58. In no other time perhaps in history is fear driven people?

  59. Is it controlled people?

  60. Has it advertised people?

  61. I was reading an amazing article yesterday in the financial magazine.

  62. And it said in America there's actually what they call a Smith and Wesson index.

  63. Now Smith and Wesson is a gun company in America.

  64. Now that's one of the reasons Americans are crazy.

  65. We have guns.

  66. And I know everybody else looks at us like, what are you doing?

  67. But what economists do is they measure the income of this company.

  68. And they can determine how well a society, American society, is doing by the sales of Smith and Wesson guns.

  69. And the economists said that the sales are driven by fear and worry.

  70. And whenever people feel more fearful and more worried, they buy things to protect themselves.

  71. They buy things that they need.

  72. It's one of the greatest ploys for advertising, right?

  73. You buy things because you're afraid you're not going to get it.

  74. You're not going to have it and somebody else is going to have it.

  75. And one of the things I've realized after 30 years and 51 years of living my life is that every one of us in here are great experts at hiding our fears.

  76. Every one of us in here do things to cover our fears so that the people around us don't see that we're fearful.

  77. Sometimes we use our jobs.

  78. Sometimes we use our jobs to cover our fears.

  79. Sometimes we use our gifting.

  80. Sometimes we use our talents.

  81. Sometimes we use our intellect.

  82. Sometimes we use and hide behind our culture and our families.

  83. Some of us hide behind relationships.

  84. Some of us hide behind our education.

  85. Some of us hide behind our health.

  86. Some of us hide behind our wealth.

  87. Some of us hide behind our good looks.

  88. Some of us hide behind our good works.

  89. but what I've seen through 30 years of living with people

  90. is that all of us have different techniques to hide our fear

  91. what kind of techniques do you use

  92. what is it in your life that you use to hide your fear because there's a sense that if we don't hide it

  93. people are going to see that we're not together people are going to see that we're not perfect people are going to see that we're not

  94. who we want them to be

  95. and fear enters into our life

  96. recently I was talking to a friend they're not in this church I asked them permission

  97. to share this before I shared it and we're talking about these things in our life

  98. and I always consider this person a mover and shaker in Hong Kong

  99. and we're talking about life and fears and values and goals

  100. and they said this to me

  101. they said you know I'm an imposter

  102. I'm an imposter I'm a fake

  103. they said that Hong Kong was all about covering yourself

  104. looking nice outwardly

  105. it didn't matter what was going on inwardly as long as you look nicely outwardly

  106. and this person said that

  107. as I did that I realized that I'm an imposter

  108. they said they realized that one day their greatest fear was

  109. that everything would unravel

  110. they realized that one day everything is going to unravel

  111. and people are going to see them just as they are

  112. they feared their work and they realized that in their work

  113. they're not becoming as sharp

  114. and they're not on the cutting edge

  115. and they're not bringing in as much money as they used to

  116. and they feared that one day people were going to see that

  117. they feared their relationships

  118. and they realized they said to me

  119. that you know I'm spending Tobin

  120. I'm spending more and more time

  121. talking to more and more people

  122. but these relationships mean nothing

  123. they're superficial

  124. and they don't help me

  125. and these people don't know me at all

  126. they said I feared my family

  127. because they realized that their family

  128. portrays this image of what everybody in Hong Kong

  129. expects the family to look like

  130. and this person said to me that one day soon

  131. they realized that all of this is going to unravel

  132. and people are going to look at them

  133. and they're going to realize that their life is not all together

  134. and their family is not all together

  135. and lastly they shared to me

  136. they feared their body and their health

  137. because they had a couple tests that came back

  138. and they weren't very positive

  139. and they realized that no matter how hard they tried

  140. that they weren't being able to keep their health up

  141. that age and time were causing things to deteriorate

  142. and they feared

  143. that people would see them not as they want to be seen

  144. but as they really are

  145. did you hear what she said to me

  146. what they said to me

  147. they said their greatest fear

  148. is that people would see them not as they are

  149. not as they want to be seen

  150. but as they are

  151. after this time with her

  152. I thanked her and I sat there

  153. and I realized you know

  154. if we're honest

  155. we all struggle with these fears

  156. we all put things in our life

  157. to cover up our fears

  158. to make people think that we're perfect

  159. we have our act together

  160. and we all

  161. if we're honest

  162. and we've lived long enough

  163. we realize that no matter what we use

  164. our money

  165. our health

  166. our intellect

  167. our relationships

  168. our family

  169. whatever we use

  170. that ultimately these things are going to fail us

  171. and we're going to be surrounded by fear again

  172. C.S. Lewis

  173. the British author and philosopher

  174. said it this way

  175. he said

  176. the only way that you and I

  177. can experience ultimate

  178. true hope

  179. the only way that you and I

  180. can experience a hope

  181. without the possibility of fear

  182. without the possibility of failure

  183. is to place our hope

  184. in something that is infinite

  185. to place our hope

  186. in something that is infinite

  187. something that is unchanging

  188. something that is true

  189. so in verse 10

  190. the angels come in

  191. and they say this amazing good news

  192. they say

  193. God has sent us a savior

  194. in the original language

  195. it means rescuer

  196. God has sent us a rescuer

  197. and this person is going to come in

  198. and they're going to cover our fears

  199. and they're going to bring true hope

  200. this savior has come in

  201. and he's going to fix our relationship with God

  202. the one that was broken at the very beginning

  203. the one that has caused fear

  204. to enter into our DNA

  205. and that is what Christmas is all about

  206. Christmas is about God sending his son

  207. to save you

  208. Christmas is about God sending his son

  209. to save you

  210. from your fears

  211. from your doubts

  212. from your guilt

  213. and from your shame

  214. to forgive you your sins

  215. this is the season

  216. when I look at things

  217. that I am reminded

  218. that hope

  219. doesn't come from within me

  220. but hope comes from a God

  221. who draws near

  222. to us

  223. it's the difference in Christianity

  224. than every other religion in the world

  225. every other philosophy

  226. every other idea of thought

  227. every other thought

  228. every other philosophy

  229. every other religion is going to say

  230. if you want to get to God

  231. you need to do this

  232. you need to do this

  233. you need to do this

  234. you need to do this

  235. you need to be a good person

  236. and if you do all these things

  237. maybe God will say

  238. good

  239. you can come to me

  240. but Christianity

  241. says that's impossible

  242. because we're finite

  243. and God is infinite

  244. and the only way

  245. a finite

  246. broken person

  247. can come to a holy

  248. infinite God

  249. is if that God

  250. comes down

  251. and enters into our world

  252. and that is the meaning

  253. of Christmas

  254. Christmas is about God saying

  255. I'm for you

  256. I love you

  257. I've come to earth

  258. to find you

  259. I've come to take away your fears

  260. I've come to give you hope

  261. I've come to give you

  262. a relationship with me

  263. Christmas reminds us

  264. when we look at this tree

  265. when we look at the nativity thing

  266. whenever we walk through this world

  267. and we see these decorations

  268. Christmas reminds us

  269. that it's about God

  270. coming to you

  271. to save you

  272. to bring you back to him

  273. it's not about you going to God

  274. but it's about God

  275. pursuing you

  276. and Christmas reminds me

  277. that ultimate hope

  278. ultimate reality

  279. is found in a little manger

  280. that one day

  281. is going to become a cross

  282. and at that cross

  283. God is going to make a way

  284. for you and I

  285. to come back to him

  286. so the passage we read

  287. says

  288. behold

  289. I bring you good news

  290. of great joy

  291. which is for all

  292. the people

  293. behold

  294. I bring you great news

  295. of good joy

  296. which is for

  297. Tobin

  298. Sam

  299. Christina

  300. Annie

  301. Ed

  302. behold

  303. I bring you good news

  304. of great joy

  305. for today

  306. in the city of David

  307. has been born

  308. a rescuer

  309. has born a savior

  310. Jesus Christ

  311. my prayer

  312. for each one of us

  313. this Christmas day

  314. is that we wouldn't forget

  315. the words of the angels

  316. my prayers

  317. as we go out today

  318. and we're going to be hit

  319. by a million different things

  320. presents

  321. food

  322. relationships

  323. dinners

  324. that wherever we go

  325. wherever we see

  326. something that represents Christmas

  327. that we'd realize

  328. that this is a message

  329. of ultimate hope

  330. my hope is

  331. as you leave here

  332. you won't keep trying

  333. to build hope

  334. and forgiveness

  335. in yourself

  336. and in the stuff

  337. that you give

  338. get and give

  339. my hope is

  340. that as you leave here

  341. you'd realize

  342. that the only way

  343. that you can find hope

  344. is through a little baby

  345. named Jesus Christ

  346. who's born

  347. in a savior

  348. does that make sense

  349. that's the message

  350. of Christmas

  351. that's why we're here

  352. the message

  353. that Jeremy sang

  354. it talks about

  355. two births

  356. the first

  357. stanza he sung

  358. before the kids

  359. read the bible verse

  360. talks about

  361. a baby being born

  362. in Jerusalem

  363. in Bethlehem

  364. the second stanza

  365. talks about

  366. a baby being born

  367. in our heart

  368. our prayer is

  369. that you would

  370. understand

  371. both of these

  372. and realize

  373. that we've come

  374. to celebrate

  375. a baby being born

  376. in Bethlehem

  377. to bring us

  378. take away our fear

  379. and bring us hope

  380. but that you'd also

  381. understand

  382. that it doesn't stop

  383. in a manger

  384. but it stops

  385. with us

  386. inviting Christ

  387. into our life

  388. and receiving

  389. that lasting hope

  390. let's pray

  391. father

  392. father

  393. we thank you

  394. for this day

  395. we thank you

  396. for the message

  397. of the angels

  398. we thank you

  399. for the message

  400. of Christmas

  401. we thank you

  402. for the message

  403. of your son

  404. who came

  405. to remove

  406. our fears

  407. to bring us

  408. true and ultimate

  409. and lasting hope

  410. lord I know

  411. that there are

  412. some people in here

  413. who hear

  414. for the first time

  415. or they come

  416. once a year

  417. and they're

  418. going to leave here

  419. and chances are

  420. that many of them

  421. many of us

  422. will try to build

  423. hope

  424. cover our fear

  425. build significance

  426. by the attaining

  427. of things

  428. and I pray

  429. in these few

  430. moments

  431. that you would

  432. allow us

  433. to be honest

  434. that we'd realize

  435. that no matter

  436. what we gather

  437. around us

  438. no matter

  439. what kind of titles

  440. or wealth

  441. or money

  442. that it won't

  443. save our souls

  444. it won't bring us

  445. ultimate hope

  446. it will never

  447. take away

  448. the fear

  449. of death

  450. but the only

  451. thing that can

  452. do that

  453. is your son

  454. who came

  455. and died

  456. to make our

  457. relationship

  458. right with you

  459. I pray lord

  460. that they would

  461. accept that

  462. gift

  463. this Christmas

  464. season

  465. that they would

  466. have that

  467. second birth

  468. of that child

  469. in their heart

  470. and they would

  471. enter into this

  472. journey

  473. that we talk

  474. about

  475. called the

  476. Christian life

  477. and lord

  478. I pray

  479. for the rest

  480. of us

  481. who have

  482. been

  483. Christians

  484. and sometimes

  485. we just

  486. forget

  487. sometimes

  488. we've been

  489. busy

  490. we're on

  491. a journey

  492. and we

  493. become busy

  494. with life

  495. and kids

  496. and everything

  497. else

  498. and we walk

  499. by a Christmas

  500. tree

  501. or we walk

  502. by a manger

  503. and we think

  504. commercialism

  505. but the message

  506. of the tree

  507. the message

  508. of the manger

  509. the message

  510. of the baby

  511. is that we

  512. were lost

  513. and you

  514. sent your

  515. son

  516. to find

  517. us

  518. I pray

  519. that we

  520. would look

  521. at Christmas

  522. different

  523. as we

  524. understand

  525. these truths

  526. we love

  527. you

  528. we pray

  529. these things

  530. in your

  531. son Jesus

  532. name

  533. you
