  1. Father, it's very easy for us not to take your word seriously, to neither take your

  2. great mind-blowing promises very seriously, nor to take your warnings very seriously.

  3. So Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would do a work in our minds and hearts and wills

  4. that our minds and hearts and wills cannot do by themselves.

  5. We ask that your Holy Spirit would move mightily in our mind and heart and will, our very soul,

  6. our very body, so that we might hear your word, both your warnings and your promises, and

  7. that your word will come into our lives and that we will be good soil so that as your

  8. word comes into our lives, our life, we will bear much fruit for your glory.

  9. Father, please so pour out your Holy Spirit upon us at this time.

  10. We ask in the name of Jesus.

  11. Amen.

  12. Please be seated.

  13. Jesus is very clear and the Bible is very clear.

  14. Hell exists.

  15. Jesus is very clear and the Bible is very clear.

  16. Hell exists.

  17. This is hard to talk about as a Canadian.

  18. In fact, the idea of hell, the biblical idea of hell is probably one of the most offensive

  19. ideas to most modern and postmodern Canadians.

  20. And because it is so offensive to most modern and postmodern Canadians, it's very hard for

  21. Christians to actually hear texts about the doctrine of hell.

  22. And that's on top of the normal types of worries and concerns that we have just as human beings.

  23. But the Bible, Jesus is very clear and the Bible is very clear.

  24. Hell exists.

  25. Some of you might be wondering why on earth I would preach on a text like this and talk

  26. about hell.

  27. At Church of the Messiah, our mission is, I express our mission nowadays is making disciples

  28. gripped by the gospel living for God's glory.

  29. And we understand that we believe that God is trying to build us, is building us into

  30. a prayerful Bible teaching evangelical church in the heart of the city with a heart for the

  31. city and the world.

  32. That's our vision.

  33. And one of the main ways that we try to do that is on Sunday mornings when we gather,

  34. we preach through books of the Bible.

  35. And by doing so, we hope that it's the Bible that sets the agenda for us.

  36. It's the Bible that forms us rather than us trying to form ourselves.

  37. And so we've been preaching through the book of Revelation.

  38. And the next two Sundays, last Sunday, we talked primarily about two of the most wonderful images

  39. about what God has in store for us in heaven.

  40. And in chapter 21 and chapter 22, we're going to have two weeks where we see how the Bible

  41. tries to heal and discipline our desires by painting the most spectacular pictures of our destiny

  42. in Christ.

  43. But before we get that, we get to chapter 20.

  44. And very, very four times the Bible text here talks about the lake of fire.

  45. And so we're going to talk about that.

  46. And I know that for many people, just mentioning hell and even saying that hell exists, that it's real,

  47. is very alienating.

  48. For many people in Canada, they will say that they are concerned about love and freedom and integrity

  49. and being inclusive.

  50. And hell comes across as unloving, unjust, repressive, and exclusive.

  51. Everything which most Canadians don't want to have anything to do with.

  52. But we're going to look into this topic today.

  53. And so if you have your Bibles, and hopefully you do, let's look at Revelation chapter 20 together.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  54. And if you've forgotten your Bibles, you don't have one, there's always a few Bibles up here at the front.

  55. You're welcome to take one.

  56. You can keep it as a gift or you can return it afterwards.

  57. That's up to you.

  58. And Revelation is the last book in the Bible.

  59. And let's read it together and just once again hear what it is that the Bible does and does not say

  60. about this idea of the lake of fire or of hell.

  61. Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  62. Actually, before I read it, and just in case you're worried,

  63. some of you who come to the church regularly, you'll know that most weeks I have either a three- or a four-point sermon.

  64. I'm actually going to have 11 different things on the slide.

  65. That means I'm not going to spend 10 minutes on each point or we'd have a two-hour sermon.

  66. Can I hear some people say amen?

  67. That would be a good thing.

  68. No.

  69. But because the topic is so serious and so controversial,

  70. some of these points will just be up on the screen very, very briefly because I'll say them briefly.

  71. But they'll all be online within a day or two, as will be the sermon.

  72. And you can look, if you like to take notes or you want to write them down later, you can go online.

  73. But just before we read Revelation chapter 20, I want to make something clearer to sort of unpack that statement.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  74. The first one is this, or the second point, but is that the New Testament is clearer

  75. and more insistent on the reality of hell than the Old Testament is.

  76. The New Testament is clearer and more insistent on the reality of hell than the Old Testament is.

  77. This is very important because many, many people will say that the Old Testament teaches a God of justice and wrath,

  78. and the New Testament teaches a God of love and acceptance,

  79. that the Old Testament prophets were all doom and gloom, and that Jesus is all about love.

  80. But the fact of the matter is that the Old Testament is clearer and more insistent on the reality of hell than the Old Testament is.

  81. Furthermore, every New Testament writer teaches that hell exists,

  82. and no biblical writer contradicts what Revelation 20 teaches.

  83. Every New Testament writer teaches that hell exists,

  84. and no biblical writer contradicts what Revelation 20 teaches.

  85. Now, I'm not saying that every New Testament book talks about hell.

  86. I use the word writer, but in fact, the New Testament at a human level is written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, John,

  87. Paul, Peter, James, and the unknown writer of Hebrews.

  88. Eight writers.

  89. And if you go back and check the books written by those eight writers,

  90. humanly speaking written by those eight writers,

  91. you will see that all of them mention hell.

  92. Every single one.

  93. Here's the next thing.

  94. Jesus teaches that hell exists, and nothing he says contradicts what Revelation 20 teaches.

  95. Jesus teaches that hell exists, and nothing he says contradicts what Revelation 20 teaches.

  96. In fact, Jesus talks about hell more than any other writer in the New Testament.

  97. Every week, I don't know how many of you notice it,

  98. how many of you pick up the bulletins and stuff like that,

  99. but every week, I mean, there's announcements and stuff and some information.

  100. There's also a blog that I write that later on goes online,

  101. and then there's something called Growing in Grace that I think also goes online.

  102. And sort of at the back of the bulletin, there's usually most weeks something called Going Deeper,

  103. and that's just something you can do by yourself,

  104. but it's even better if you connect with a few other people,

  105. and you look at some extra scripture texts that touch on the scripture texts that I preach on.

  106. And this week, I just give you a small sampling of some of Jesus' teachings on hell,

  107. and that's part of the Going Deeper thing in your bulletin,

  108. which if you lose your bulletin, I believe it's also put online.

  109. So mindful that Jesus teaches that hell exists,

  110. and nothing he says contradicts what Revelation 20 teaches,

  111. let's start to read Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  112. It begins like this.

  113. Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven,

  114. holding in his hand the key to the abyss, or the bottomless pit,

  115. and a great chain.

  116. And he, that's the angel, seized the dragon,

  117. that ancient serpent who is called the devil and Satan,

  118. and bound him for a thousand years,

  119. and threw him into the pit, the abyss,

  120. and shut it and sealed it over him,

  121. so that he might not deceive the nations any longer

  122. until the thousand years were ended.

  123. After that, he must be released for a little while.

  124. Just sort of pause for a second.

  125. This is a bit of an aside in terms of the overall sermon,

  126. but it's actually very, very important,

  127. and it does sort of fit.

  128. It's a very, very important point,

  129. and that is this.

  130. At no time in the past, present, or future

  131. is the devil equal with God.

  132. At no time in the past, present, or future

  133. is the devil equal with God.

  134. It's a very common part in general writing in our culture

  135. and thinking about the culture

  136. as if sort of there's the devil and there's God.

  137. And that's sort of believing the devil's propaganda.

  138. And the Bible is very clear,

  139. and the book of Revelation

  140. constantly gives very, very powerful imagery

  141. to show this.

  142. So even here in these three verses,

  143. it's not God that deals with the devil.

  144. He sends an angel.

  145. He doesn't even send an archangel.

  146. He doesn't even send one of the four living creatures

  147. that are closest to the throne.

  148. He doesn't have to pick his biggest guns.

  149. He just sends an angel.

  150. And an angel binds Satan with no effort

  151. and casts him into the pit.

  152. And if you go back and you look

  153. through all the book of Revelation,

  154. there's several times in the book of Revelation,

  155. it'll come up in a few verses,

  156. where the devil gathers an army to fight against God.

  157. And every time the army,

  158. the devil gathers this massive army

  159. to fight against God,

  160. or the beast, or the false prophet,

  161. in every case they all gather,

  162. armed to the teeth, ready for war,

  163. God shows up, and there's no battle.

  164. The devil instantly finds himself defeated.

  165. And so it's very important for us

  166. to hear this,

  167. that the propaganda,

  168. that somehow there's a type of equality

  169. between the devil and God,

  170. it's just completely and utterly rejected in the Bible.

  171. God has no equal.

  172. He has rivals,

  173. in the sense of people who,

  174. idols and demons,

  175. who are rivals for our affection.

  176. But he has no true rival.

  177. There are no other gods.

  178. And the devil is not his equal.

  179. This is also very important for us

  180. in several other ways.

  181. And that is because

  182. one of the things about evil in our lives,

  183. whether it's just moral evil,

  184. or whether it's a type of demonic evil,

  185. is that moral evil and demonic evil

  186. always talks as if it is inevitable

  187. and undefeatable.

  188. And as if it has a proper claim.

  189. And as if you have to surrender to it

  190. because you will suffer harm

  191. if you do not surrender to it

  192. because it is inevitable.

  193. And whether that evil

  194. is a type of evil in society,

  195. that slavery is inevitable,

  196. for instance,

  197. which is what people would have said

  198. to Wilberforce,

  199. or in our day

  200. that things like maybe abortion

  201. are inevitable,

  202. that they can never be defeated,

  203. that they are here to stay,

  204. that any type of evil

  205. will always claim

  206. that it is inevitable

  207. and unable to be defeated.

  208. And this is never true.

  209. It is never true.

  210. And it's pictured in picture language

  211. here in the book of Revelation.

  212. But just an angel

  213. goes and binds Satan

  214. for a thousand years.

  215. Just an angel.

  216. At no time in the past,

  217. present, or future,

  218. is the devil equal with God.

  219. Now, we're going to keep reading,

  220. and I apologize to some people.

  221. Some people here,

  222. you've been putting up

  223. with me preaching on Revelation

  224. for so many weeks,

  225. and you've been desperately

  226. wanting to find out

  227. if George is a premillennialist,

  228. an amillennialist,

  229. or a postmillennialist.

  230. And those of you

  231. who aren't used to

  232. that type of Christian language,

  233. you've just wondered,

  234. what on earth I said?

  235. But for certain people

  236. in Christian culture,

  237. this is the big question.

  238. And whole denominations

  239. are partially founded

  240. on whether you're premillennial,

  241. amillennial,

  242. or postmillennial.

  243. And in fact,

  244. all that argument

  245. comes up in these few verses

  246. in Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  247. And I'm going to read it.

  248. It's very controversial,

  249. but I'm going to bypass it

  250. with a simple little comment,

  251. because I think

  252. in our day and age,

  253. the far more pressing question

  254. is what exactly

  255. is the lake of fire?

  256. And are people

  257. actually cast into it

  258. by God?

  259. And does hell exist?

  260. But to get to those texts,

  261. we have to read through

  262. this text.

  263. So let's continue

  264. at verse 4.

  265. So the devil's just been

  266. released for a little while.

  267. Then verse 4,

  268. then I saw thrones

  269. and seated on them

  270. were those to whom

  271. the authority to judge

  272. was committed.

  273. Also I saw the souls

  274. of those who had been

  275. beheaded for the testimony

  276. of Jesus and for the word

  277. of God,

  278. and those who had not

  279. worshipped the beast

  280. or its image

  281. and had not received

  282. its mark on their foreheads

  283. or their hands.

  284. They came to life

  285. and reigned with Christ

  286. for a thousand years.

  287. The rest of the dead

  288. did not come to life

  289. until the thousand years

  290. were ended.

  291. This is the first resurrection.

  292. Blessed and holy

  293. is the one

  294. who shares

  295. in the first resurrection.

  296. Over such,

  297. the second death

  298. has no power.

  299. But they

  300. will be priests

  301. of God

  302. and of Christ

  303. and they will reign

  304. with him

  305. for a thousand years.

  306. And when the thousand years

  307. are ended,

  308. Satan will be released

  309. from his prison,

  310. the pit,

  311. the abyss,

  312. and will come out

  313. to deceive the nations

  314. that are at the four corners

  315. of the earth,

  316. Gog and Magog,

  317. to gather them for battle.

  318. Their number is like

  319. the sand of the sea

  320. and they marched up

  321. over the broad plain

  322. of the earth

  323. and surrounded the camp

  324. of the saints

  325. in the beloved city.

  326. Ha!

  327. What happens?

  328. But fire came down

  329. from heaven

  330. and consumed them.

  331. There's no fight.

  332. And the devil

  333. who had deceived them

  334. was thrown

  335. into the lake of fire

  336. and sulfur

  337. where the beast

  338. and the false prophet were.

  339. That was last week,

  340. chapter 19.

  341. And they will be tormented

  342. day and night

  343. forever and ever.

  344. Let's just pause there.

  345. You can keep your finger

  346. in the Bible.

  347. Just a very,

  348. very brief comment

  349. about the millennium

  350. and all that stuff.

  351. I read 20 pages

  352. of a big hardcover

  353. academic commentary

  354. going through

  355. Greek tenses

  356. and verbs

  357. and roots

  358. and trying to decide

  359. how much of this

  360. is symbolic

  361. and how much

  362. of it's literal.

  363. And, you know,

  364. I wrestled with it,

  365. made notes and stuff.

  366. At the end of it,

  367. I actually did

  368. something like this.

  369. It was actually

  370. in this book.

  371. It's sort of

  372. before my notes.

  373. And I sort of put the,

  374. sort of put my Bible down

  375. and the book down.

  376. I sort of sat back

  377. and thought,

  378. you know,

  379. I don't have to figure

  380. this stuff out.

  381. God's going to do

  382. what God's going to do.

  383. I don't have to figure out

  384. whether there's going to be

  385. a literal thousand years

  386. and it's exactly literal

  387. like this

  388. or whether the thousand years

  389. is just a picture

  390. of the church.

  391. It's a symbolism

  392. of the current situation

  393. and then Jesus

  394. just comes back.

  395. It's all,

  396. I don't have to figure it out.

  397. God's going to do

  398. what God's going to do.

  399. I mean,

  400. that's something

  401. we should get an amen for.

  402. We're not an amen

  403. type of congregation.

  404. Not that that would be bad

  405. if we became one.

  406. But that's just sort of,

  407. so I'm not going to tell you,

  408. you know,

  409. my view on it

  410. is God's going to do

  411. what God's going to do.

  412. The real thing

  413. for most Canadians

  414. is that verse 10,

  415. and the devil

  416. who had deceived them

  417. was thrown into

  418. the lake of fire

  419. and sulfur

  420. where the beast

  421. and the false prophet were

  422. and they will be tormented

  423. day and night

  424. forever and ever.

  425. So let's start to try

  426. to unpack it.

  427. The first thing

  428. I want to say is this,

  429. if you could put it up

  430. on the screen.

  431. Hell is a real place

  432. of punishment,

  433. destruction,

  434. and banishment.

  435. Hell is a real place

  436. of punishment,

  437. destruction,

  438. and banishment.

  439. And I put place

  440. in quotation marks

  441. not because I'm trying

  442. to get out of anything.

  443. What the Bible is teaching

  444. is that hell is real

  445. in the fullest sense

  446. of the word.

  447. But,

  448. I'm not going to,

  449. hell,

  450. I'm not saying a but

  451. to get rid of hell

  452. is real in the fullest sense

  453. of the word

  454. and that's what

  455. the Bible is teaching.

  456. How do these different

  457. images go together?

  458. Like some of you

  459. might be wondering

  460. how is it that the Bible

  461. talks about,

  462. I remember Ken reading

  463. that there's a second,

  464. like hell is like

  465. a second death,

  466. but how is it that

  467. hell is like a second death

  468. and then there's

  469. this eternal torment?

  470. How is it that,

  471. like if you go back,

  472. George,

  473. and look at Jesus' teaching,

  474. how is it that he talks

  475. about hell as being

  476. a place of darkness

  477. yet it's also

  478. a place of fire?

  479. And I could multiply

  480. examples like that.

  481. And the fact of the matter

  482. is,

  483. is that when we look

  484. at these types of,

  485. when the Bible is talking

  486. about something

  487. which is literally

  488. outside of our experience

  489. and our categories

  490. of thought.

  491. And the Bible is trying

  492. to communicate to us

  493. something in a series

  494. of images

  495. and the Bible

  496. isn't saying

  497. that we should sort of

  498. use one image

  499. to discard the rest.

  500. We use all of the images

  501. and we can't figure out

  502. on this side of the grave

  503. or this side of Jesus returning

  504. what parts of these

  505. different images

  506. are literal

  507. and what parts of them

  508. are symbolic

  509. and metaphorical.

  510. We can't figure that out

  511. on this side of the grave.

  512. But here's what we can know,

  513. that both in this teaching

  514. of the lake of fire

  515. and you look through

  516. the New Testament teaching,

  517. the New Testament teaching

  518. can be summarized in this.

  519. Hell is a real place.

  520. of punishment,

  521. destruction,

  522. and banishment.

  523. And that's what we can see here

  524. even if we're not entirely sure

  525. what it means

  526. or what's symbolic

  527. or what's metaphorical.

  528. The question of how

  529. fire and darkness

  530. and death

  531. which implies

  532. that it's all over

  533. and how that all goes together,

  534. God knows how it goes together,

  535. but it's

  536. we just

  537. what we can know is that

  538. and that we should not

  539. live our lives

  540. hoping that it is something

  541. other than that.

  542. That

  543. hell is real

  544. in the fullest sense.

  545. In fact,

  546. when we

  547. start to lose

  548. a sense

  549. of this,

  550. that hell

  551. is a real place

  552. of punishment,

  553. destruction,

  554. and banishment,

  555. when

  556. because of the pressure

  557. that we feel

  558. that

  559. to talk about hell

  560. is to talk about

  561. something which is

  562. unjust,

  563. unloving,

  564. repressive,

  565. and exclusive,

  566. and so we try

  567. to adapt

  568. and

  569. make hell

  570. into a series

  571. of metaphors

  572. that empties it

  573. of this,

  574. and I don't mean

  575. to offend anybody

  576. who's here.

  577. I'm sorry if I offend,

  578. but I'm going to

  579. still say it.

  580. To move away

  581. from a doctrine

  582. and understanding

  583. that the Bible

  584. teaches something

  585. like this

  586. is to move

  587. into residual

  588. Christianity,

  589. not full-bodied

  590. Christianity.

  591. It's to move

  592. to a residual

  593. understanding

  594. of who Jesus is.

  595. It's to move

  596. into abstractions

  597. in something

  598. which is ephemeral

  599. and something

  600. which lasts substance.

  601. It's to move

  602. away from Jesus

  603. in his full reality

  604. and God

  605. in his full

  606. existence.

  607. It is to move

  608. away from something

  609. which is full-bodied

  610. and full-throated

  611. and able

  612. to save

  613. and deliver.

  614. And to move

  615. away from this

  616. is to move

  617. into residual

  618. Christianity,

  619. not into deeper

  620. Christianity.

  621. Now some of you

  622. say,

  623. okay,

  624. George,

  625. don't you think

  626. that if that's true,

  627. if hell is a real

  628. place,

  629. and you're putting

  630. place because

  631. when you're talking

  632. about,

  633. what's it like

  634. to step out

  635. of time?

  636. I sort of get it,

  637. but if you're really

  638. saying,

  639. George,

  640. that hell is real

  641. in the fullest

  642. sense of the word

  643. and it's a place,

  644. whatever that means

  645. in terms of the new

  646. heaven and the new

  647. earth and all,

  648. but it's real

  649. punishment,

  650. destruction,

  651. banishment.

  652. George,

  653. if Jesus taught

  654. that,

  655. don't you think

  656. he's a bit

  657. of a scoundrel?

  658. Don't you think

  659. he maybe needs

  660. to know the Buddha?

  661. Don't you think,

  662. George,

  663. that type of

  664. teaching is

  665. unloving

  666. and repressive?

  667. We're going to

  668. talk about that

  669. now,

  670. but before I do,

  671. I'm going to dig

  672. myself deeper

  673. into a hole.

  674. I'm going to say

  675. this before we

  676. read Revelation

    Revelation 11 chapter mention

  677. chapter 11,

  678. 20 verses 11

  679. to 15,

  680. because up until

  681. now it's just

  682. been like the

  683. devil and the

  684. beast and the

  685. false prophet

  686. who are in

  687. hell,

  688. but Revelation

  689. 20 is going

  690. to end with

  691. people being

  692. thrown into

  693. the lake

  694. of fire.

  695. I'm going

  696. to say

  697. this,

  698. Canadians

  699. see the

  700. biblical

  701. teaching on

  702. hell as

  703. causing

  704. spiritual,

  705. moral,

  706. and intellectual

  707. problems,

  708. but the

  709. Bible presents

  710. hell as

  711. solving

  712. spiritual,

  713. moral,

  714. and intellectual

  715. problems.

  716. That's part of

  717. the problem

  718. why I say

  719. that to move

  720. away from

  721. understanding hell

  722. as being real

  723. is to end

  724. up moving

  725. into residual

  726. Christianity,

  727. not real

  728. Christianity.

  729. And I don't

  730. mean to

  731. offend,

  732. I probably

  733. just offended

  734. virtually every

  735. Anglican

  736. United Church

  737. minister in

  738. the city

  739. by saying

  740. that.

  741. And in

  742. many

  743. evangelical

  744. denominations,

  745. there would

  746. be a whole

  747. pile of

  748. youth pastors

  749. and even

  750. senior pastors

  751. who for me

  752. to say that

  753. will have

  754. gotten very

  755. squirmy and

  756. would maybe

  757. end up,

  758. if this was

  759. a room that

  760. I was speaking

  761. to of them,

  762. they would

  763. send me

  764. angry emails

  765. afterwards.

  766. But the

  767. fact of the

  768. matter is,

  769. is that

  770. Canadians see

  771. the biblical

  772. teaching on

  773. hell as

  774. causing

  775. spiritual,

  776. moral,

  777. and intellectual

  778. problems,

  779. but the

  780. Bible presents

  781. hell as

  782. solving

  783. spiritual,

  784. moral,

  785. and intellectual

  786. problems.

  787. Now,

  788. I'm going to

  789. give you a

  790. couple of

  791. examples in

  792. a moment

  793. as to

  794. what I mean

  795. by some of

  796. that,

  797. to try to

  798. see that,

  799. in fact,

  800. the teaching

  801. on hell

  802. does solve

  803. problems,

  804. that,

  805. in fact,

  806. to deny

  807. hell causes

  808. more problems

  809. than it is

  810. to uphold

  811. the teaching

  812. of hell.

  813. I'm going to

  814. give you a

  815. few examples

  816. about that,

  817. thought experiments

  818. in a moment,

  819. to try to help

  820. you to see

  821. that.

  822. These are all

  823. secondary to

  824. the Bible,

  825. because,

  826. you see,

  827. one of the

  828. things is that

  829. the Bible,

  830. part of the

  831. thing is that,

  832. you know,

  833. for us,

  834. it's so easy

  835. for us to

  836. think of God

  837. as being tiny

  838. and people

  839. as being big,

  840. that Canada

  841. is big

  842. and God

  843. is tiny,

  844. that my

  845. problems are

  846. big and God

  847. is tiny.

  848. It's so easy

  849. for us to

  850. think of God

  851. as being,

  852. you know,

  853. it's so easy,

  854. you know,

  855. many of you have

  856. heard me speak

  857. before that the

  858. normal way that

  859. we understand

  860. Jesus coming

  861. into a locked

  862. room,

  863. you know,

  864. we think of him

  865. in terms of

  866. Star Trek

  867. analogies,

  868. and we think

  869. that somehow

  870. or another

  871. it's as if

  872. Jesus becomes

  873. like immaterial,

  874. like a ray

  875. or like sunlight,

  876. and he becomes

  877. so immaterial

  878. that he can

  879. pass through the

  880. walls and come

  881. in the room,

  882. but the Bible

  883. understands that

  884. what's happened

  885. with Jesus

  886. is that Jesus

  887. after he's died

  888. and risen from

  889. the dead,

  890. he's so real

  891. that the walls

  892. are as if

  893. they are immaterial,

  894. that Jesus

  895. is more real

  896. than the walls,

  897. that God

  898. is more real

  899. than we are,

  900. that God

  901. is more real

  902. than we are,

  903. and so it is

  904. that for the

  905. Bible writers

  906. who have this

  907. deeper view of

  908. God than is

  909. common for us

  910. as Canadians,

  911. they understand

  912. the huge problems,

  913. how can the

  914. unclean dwell

  915. with the clean

  916. forever,

  917. how can the

  918. impure dwell

  919. with the pure,

  920. how can the

  921. evil dwell

  922. with perfect

  923. goodness,

  924. how can that

  925. which is of

  926. darkness,

  927. not only that

  928. which is,

  929. how can darkness

  930. dwell with

  931. unapproachable

  932. light,

  933. how can darkness

  934. dwell with light,

  935. how can darkness

  936. dwell not only

  937. with unapproachable

  938. light,

  939. but how can we

  940. ever approach

  941. unapproachable

  942. light,

  943. and the Bible

  944. see,

  945. and how is it

  946. that God can be

  947. completely and utterly,

  948. how is it that we

  949. can do bad things,

  950. and God must judge

  951. these bad things,

  952. and the Bible

  953. has this

  954. deeper,

  955. richer,

  956. more powerful

  957. understanding of

  958. the existence

  959. and the reality

  960. of God,

  961. and at no point

  962. in time does the

  963. biblical writers agree

  964. with what goes

  965. on in my mind,

  966. in my imagination,

  967. in my heart,

  968. where I am

  969. constantly being

  970. pushed to

  971. understand God

  972. is tiny,

  973. and people are

  974. big,

  975. God is tiny,

  976. and the country

  977. is big,

  978. God is tiny,

  979. and money is big,

  980. God is tiny,

  981. and sex is big,

  982. God is tiny,

  983. and my boss

  984. is big,

  985. and the Bible

  986. never once

  987. accepts that.

  988. The Bible

  989. always understands

  990. God is immense,

  991. God is immense,

  992. even the devil

  993. is not his equal,

  994. even the devil,

  995. God does not have

  996. to send the four

  997. living creatures

  998. or the 24 elders

  999. or some mighty

  1000. archangel,

  1001. but an angel

  1002. to deal with it,

  1003. and so it is

  1004. in a whole raft

  1005. of levels

  1006. that the Bible

  1007. understands

  1008. that the doctrine

  1009. of hell

  1010. and how it fits

  1011. with the person

  1012. of Jesus

  1013. solves countless

  1014. spiritual,

  1015. moral,

  1016. and intellectual

  1017. problems,

  1018. but we,

  1019. for whom,

  1020. are always

  1021. being drifting

  1022. into seeing

  1023. God as tiny,

  1024. and heaven

  1025. is just

  1026. that good place

  1027. to go where

  1028. you die,

  1029. when you die,

  1030. that heaven

  1031. is just living

  1032. on in people's

  1033. memories.

  1034. I'm not trying

  1035. to put people

  1036. down by saying

  1037. that,

  1038. I'm really not,

  1039. I apologize

  1040. if the tone

  1041. of my voice

  1042. sounded like

  1043. I was,

  1044. but I'm just

  1045. trying to illustrate

  1046. how for most

  1047. of us as Canadians,

  1048. heaven and God

  1049. is tiny,

  1050. abstract,

  1051. wispy,

  1052. and not at all

  1053. what's being

  1054. portrayed here.

  1055. It's part of the

  1056. reason we have

  1057. problems getting

  1058. our minds

  1059. around the Bible

  1060. and understanding

  1061. the depths

  1062. and the immensity

  1063. of grace.

  1064. Let's read

  1065. verses 11 to 15.

  1066. Then I saw

  1067. a great white

  1068. throne,

  1069. and him who

  1070. was seated

  1071. on it,

  1072. that is,

  1073. he sees God.

  1074. It doesn't

  1075. describe God,

  1076. but he sees God.

  1077. This is powerful

  1078. few words.

  1079. From his presence,

  1080. earth and sky

  1081. fled away,

  1082. and no place

  1083. was found for them.

  1084. What did I just

  1085. tell you about

  1086. the Bible

  1087. constantly portrays

  1088. God as immense

  1089. and more real?

  1090. God shows up

  1091. in our created

  1092. order,

  1093. unveiled,

  1094. and earth

  1095. and sky

  1096. flee away,

  1097. and no place

  1098. is found for them.

  1099. We think of the

  1100. earth as being

  1101. so powerful

  1102. and strong.

  1103. God shows up,

  1104. and earth

  1105. flees.

  1106. It's also a

  1107. picture of as

  1108. God comes and

  1109. brings with him

  1110. the new heaven

  1111. and the new

  1112. earth,

  1113. this earth

  1114. and the heaven

  1115. that we now

  1116. live in,

  1117. it flees.

  1118. They don't,

  1119. in a sense,

  1120. flee.

  1121. Verse 12,

  1122. and I saw the

  1123. dead,

  1124. great and small,

  1125. Bill Gates

  1126. and the lowest

  1127. untouchable

  1128. and the poorest

  1129. country in the

  1130. planet,

  1131. standing before

  1132. the throne,

  1133. and books

  1134. were opened.

  1135. That's bad

  1136. news,

  1137. folks.

  1138. Then another

  1139. book was opened,

  1140. which is a book

  1141. of life,

  1142. which I'll talk

  1143. about later.

  1144. And the dead

  1145. were judged

  1146. by what was

  1147. written in the

  1148. books according

  1149. to what they

  1150. had done.

  1151. And the sea

  1152. gave up the

  1153. dead who were

  1154. in it,

  1155. death and

  1156. Hades gave up

  1157. the dead

  1158. who were in

  1159. them,

  1160. and they were

  1161. judged,

  1162. each of them

  1163. according to

  1164. what they had

  1165. done.

  1166. Then death

  1167. and Hades

  1168. were thrown

  1169. into the

  1170. lake of fire.

  1171. Notice that,

  1172. folks?

  1173. Death is

  1174. thrown into

  1175. the lake of

  1176. fire.

  1177. Death dies.

  1178. Death dies

  1179. in two stages.

  1180. The true

  1181. beginning of

  1182. death,

  1183. the true

  1184. death of

  1185. death happens

  1186. with the

  1187. death of

  1188. the Son

  1189. of God

  1190. upon the

  1191. cross.

  1192. The day

  1193. the Son

  1194. of God,

  1195. Jesus,

  1196. our Savior,

  1197. dies upon

  1198. the cross,

  1199. died upon

  1200. the cross,

  1201. is the day

  1202. that death

  1203. died.

  1204. Amen!

  1205. But the

  1206. final

  1207. completion

  1208. of that

  1209. death

  1210. will happen

  1211. in the

  1212. future.

  1213. Death is

  1214. thrown

  1215. into the

  1216. lake of

  1217. fire.

  1218. This is

  1219. the second

  1220. death,

  1221. the lake

  1222. of fire.

  1223. And if

  1224. anyone's

  1225. name was

  1226. not found

  1227. written in

  1228. the book

  1229. of life,

  1230. he was

  1231. thrown

  1232. into

  1233. the lake

  1234. of fire.

  1235. does this

  1236. show that

  1237. God is

  1238. unloving?

  1239. Last

  1240. week,

  1241. if you

  1242. go back

  1243. and listen

  1244. to the

  1245. sermon

  1246. online,

  1247. we talked

  1248. about two

  1249. powerful images

  1250. in the

  1251. book of

  1252. Revelation

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  1253. chapter 19.

  1254. It's the

  1255. image of

  1256. the bride

  1257. coming down

  1258. from heaven.

  1259. It's a

  1260. corporate image

  1261. of the

  1262. church,

  1263. and there's

  1264. also an

  1265. image of

  1266. being very

  1267. invited to

  1268. a feast.

  1269. And I

  1270. talked at

  1271. some length

  1272. about how

  1273. these are

  1274. very powerful

  1275. images to

  1276. help start

  1277. to order

  1278. and heal

  1279. our desires

  1280. and our

  1281. longings

  1282. and our

  1283. yearnings,

  1284. to captivate

  1285. our imagination.

  1286. I pointed

  1287. out how

  1288. Jesus even

  1289. points to

  1290. the feast

  1291. in one of

  1292. the times

  1293. when he's

  1294. describing

  1295. the Lord's

  1296. supper,

  1297. and that one

  1298. of the

  1299. things we

  1300. can do

  1301. when we

  1302. come to

  1303. communion

  1304. is pray

  1305. that God

  1306. will fan

  1307. into flame

  1308. within us,

  1309. a longing

  1310. and yearning

  1311. to feast

  1312. with him

  1313. in heaven

  1314. when we

  1315. come to

  1316. remember the

  1317. death and

  1318. resurrection of

  1319. Jesus as we

  1320. celebrate the

  1321. Lord's

  1322. supper.

  1323. And so it's

  1324. definitely the

  1325. case that,

  1326. and it's going

  1327. to be seen

  1328. next week,

  1329. you know,

  1330. after hell we

  1331. have two

  1332. weeks on

  1333. heaven,

  1334. chapter 21

  1335. and chapter

  1336. 22,

  1337. and the

  1338. fact of the

  1339. matter is

  1340. that the

  1341. Bible presents

  1342. in a

  1343. picture of

  1344. God's

  1345. intention for

  1346. us,

  1347. which is

  1348. social and

  1349. loving,

  1350. and it's

  1351. an eternal

  1352. relationship with

  1353. God of

  1354. intimacy and

  1355. companionship and

  1356. trust with no

  1357. exit strategies,

  1358. which is all

  1359. about love,

  1360. which is deep

  1361. love, and

  1362. which is for

  1363. all eternity,

  1364. and it's in

  1365. God's presence,

  1366. and it's us

  1367. standing with

  1368. God,

  1369. unashamed,

  1370. being able to

  1371. stand in

  1372. unapproachable

  1373. light,

  1374. and have

  1375. ourselves

  1376. completely

  1377. open and

  1378. transparent,

  1379. and every

  1380. detail of

  1381. our lives

  1382. transparent to

  1383. him and to

  1384. all others,

  1385. and seen

  1386. through the

  1387. eyes of

  1388. love,

  1389. and experiences

  1390. love,

  1391. and experiences

  1392. peace,

  1393. and experiences

  1394. rest,

  1395. and the

  1396. Bible paints

  1397. the most

  1398. exalted

  1399. picture of

  1400. our destiny,

  1401. of unending

  1402. existence redeemed

  1403. by Jesus in

  1404. the presence of

  1405. God, and

  1406. experiencing God

  1407. as love,

  1408. and that's

  1409. what the

  1410. picture that

  1411. the Bible

  1412. will present

  1413. to us.

  1414. In fact,

  1415. the Bible

  1416. presents love

  1417. and heaven

  1418. not as

  1419. abstract,

  1420. but as

  1421. very,

  1422. very,

  1423. very,

  1424. very,

  1425. very,

  1426. very powerful.

  1427. Woody Allen

  1428. is famous for

  1429. complaining about

  1430. the contemporary

  1431. understanding that

  1432. when we die,

  1433. we live on in

  1434. people's memories,

  1435. and Woody Allen

  1436. famously said that

  1437. when he dies,

  1438. he doesn't want to

  1439. live on in

  1440. people's memories,

  1441. he wants to

  1442. live on in

  1443. his condo,

  1444. that living on

  1445. just in people's

  1446. memories isn't

  1447. very good.

  1448. Many people will

  1449. say that when

  1450. they die,

  1451. they just go to

  1452. a better place,

  1453. but the Bible

  1454. says that when

  1455. you die,

  1456. you're going to

  1457. be with God.

  1458. Imagine for a

  1459. second there's a

  1460. person that you

  1461. don't particularly

  1462. care for.

  1463. It's a romantic

  1464. thing.

  1465. Imagine that you're

  1466. single, and

  1467. there's a person

  1468. you don't particularly

  1469. care for, and you

  1470. know they want to

  1471. spend time with you,

  1472. and you have a

  1473. friend who wants

  1474. to set you up

  1475. with that person,

  1476. and one day you

1477. agree to go on a

  1478. long car drive,

  1479. you're going to

  1480. drive to Windsor,

  1481. that's a long car

  1482. drive, you're

  1483. leaving from

  1484. Ottawa, you're

1485. going to go to a

  1486. long car drive

  1487. with Windsor, and

  1488. you show up, and

  1489. your friend picks

1490. you up, and lo and

1491. behold in the car is

  1492. this person that you

  1493. don't like, but your

  1494. friend's been trying

1495. to set you up with,

  1496. and you're pretty mad,

1497. but you get in the

  1498. car, and then the

  1499. very, very next thing

  1500. you know is your

  1501. friend gets out of

  1502. the car, and the

  1503. person drives, that

  1504. person you've been

  1505. trying to avoid, they

  1506. drive the car, and

  1507. you're now stuck in

1508. the car all the way to

  1509. Windsor with somebody

  1510. that you've been trying

  1511. to avoid, you don't

  1512. really care for, and

1513. now you have to drive

1514. all the way to Windsor

1515. with them, stuck in a

  1516. car with them.

1517. When you get back, or

  1518. when you have a

  1519. freak moment, and you

1520. call up your friend, and

1521. what will you say to

  1522. them?

1523. You will say, how dare

1524. you make me spend 10

  1525. hours with that

  1526. person?

1527. How dare you make me

  1528. spend 10 hours with

  1529. that person?

  1530. You know I don't want

  1531. to be with that

  1532. person, you know I

  1533. don't like them, you

  1534. know I don't want to

  1535. be in their presence,

1536. and you made me spend

  1537. 10 hours with them.

  1538. How dare you?

  1539. So, what's it going

1540. to be like if we die

1541. and we have to spend

  1542. eternity with God?

1543. And we don't want to.

  1544. Here's what I'm going

  1545. to suggest, and we're

1546. going to start to unpack

1547. it a little bit more,

1548. that how dare you, if

1549. you could put it up, how

1550. dare you is the anthem

  1551. of hell.

1552. How dare you is the

  1553. anthem of hell.

1554. The doctrine of hell is

  1555. completely and utterly

  1556. unloving.

  1557. Well, let me just

  1558. suggest this.

  1559. Imagine for a moment

  1560. that you're a single

  1561. woman, and you meet

  1562. this fellow, and you

1563. seem to just meet by

  1564. chance, you meet by

1565. chance, you strike up a

  1566. conversation, everything

  1567. is perfect about this

  1568. fellow, and ask you

  1569. after just a couple

  1570. of dates, you're

  1571. telling all your

  1572. girlfriends about how

  1573. you've met this

  1574. spectacular guy.

  1575. He's like, you already

  1576. sense this unbelievably

  1577. deep connection, and

1578. then it just, the more

1579. you get to know this

  1580. person, the more you

1581. seem to love him and

1582. like him, and then you

  1583. finally decide that

  1584. you're going to get

  1585. married, and then just

  1586. the day before the

  1587. wedding rehearsal, so

  1588. two days before the

1589. wedding, you go in to

  1590. visit your beloved in

  1591. his office, and the

  1592. secretary who knows

  1593. you very well says,

  1594. oh yeah, he's not

  1595. here, he's gone out

  1596. for some coffee, just

1597. go and sit down, he'll

1598. be in in a second, and

1599. you walk in and you

  1600. notice that the

  1601. computer's on, and you

  1602. notice that there's an

  1603. email, and you don't

  1604. think you should read

  1605. this email, but you

  1606. start to read this

1607. email, and all of a

  1608. sudden, you start to

  1609. feel horrified, and

1610. then you start to press

  1611. down the replies,

  1612. because it's a long

  1613. list of replies, and

  1614. then you discover that

  1615. this fellow had, a

  1616. month before he met

1617. you, met a very, very

1618. rich man who was an

  1619. experiment, said, I'd

1620. like you to see if you

  1621. could woo this young

1622. woman, and get her to

1623. marry you, and if you

1624. can do it, I'll give

  1625. you 50 million dollars.

  1626. Would you still marry

  1627. the man?

  1628. No revenge fantasy

  1629. Hollywood thing, you

1630. marry him when you know

  1631. the 50 million's in the

1632. bank, you divorce him, and

  1633. get 25 million under

  1634. Canada's no fault, divorce

  1635. laws.

  1636. Okay, none of that.

1637. But you might do that

1638. out of a revenge thing,

  1639. wouldn't you?

  1640. You wouldn't marry him.

  1641. You wouldn't marry him.

1642. How is it that if heaven

1643. is like being married to

1644. God, and you're forced to

  1645. spend eternity married with

1646. God, wouldn't you want to

1647. say to God, how dare you?

1648. How dare you want to have

1649. that type of intimacy with

  1650. me?

  1651. How dare you?

1652. Want to force me to go to

1653. spend eternity in love with

  1654. you?

1655. How dare you do that?

  1656. People think that the

  1657. doctrine of hell, that

  1658. everybody should go to

  1659. heaven, that nobody should

  1660. go to hell, that that's a

  1661. sort of a more, it's

  1662. actually more in keeping

1663. with freedom, but is it in

  1664. keeping with freedom?

1665. You go out after the

1666. service, and you go on

1667. Rideau Street to have a

1668. coffee, and you meet a

  1669. street person, and this

  1670. street person's really,

  1671. really messed up.

  1672. They're very, very deeply

  1673. addicted to drugs and

  1674. alcohol.

1675. And then you realize that

  1676. there's a politician, you

1677. see many street people like

1678. this, and then a politician

1679. arises who says, I can very

1680. simply solve the problem of

  1681. all drug addiction.

1682. What I'm going to do is I'm

1683. going to have the police pick

1684. up every person who has an

  1685. alcohol problem and every

  1686. drug addict.

1687. And we're going to be very,

1688. very humane, and we're going

1689. to be very, very loving.

1690. We're going to put them in a

1691. place, and in that place

1692. there will be no drugs and

1693. no alcohol, and we'll make

1694. sure that if any guard ever

  1695. tries to smuggle something

1696. in, they will be completely

  1697. and severely punished.

1698. And because of the fact that

  1699. drug addicts, even though

1700. many drug addicts have been

1701. in and out of the drunk tank

1702. and in and out of rehab

1703. things many times, but as soon

1704. as they leave and they get

1705. clean, they go back in the

1706. street, they go right back to

  1707. using drugs and alcohol.

1708. What we're going to do is

1709. we just know that that's the

  1710. way drug addicts and

  1711. alcoholics are, so we're

1712. going to put them in this

  1713. place where there's no

  1714. alcohol and there's no

1715. drugs, and they're going to

1716. live there till they die.

1717. They're going to live there

1718. till they die, and we'll give

1719. them all their food, all their

1720. meals, the latest movies, all

  1721. the sporting equipment, but

1722. they'll just never be able to

1723. leave, and we've solved the

  1724. drug problem.

1725. And you would say, how dare you

  1726. take away that person's

  1727. freedom?

1728. How dare you do that?

1729. So how is it that God could

1730. force people to go to spend an

1731. eternity with him when they

  1732. don't want to?

1733. Wouldn't they want to say to

1734. God, how dare you force me to go

  1735. somewhere in a way that I don't

  1736. want to?

1737. How dare you, God, do that?

1738. How could God force them?

1739. C.S. Lewis said that the teaching

1740. on hell in the Bible is the most

1741. profound teaching in the world on

1742. human freedom and on the dignity

  1743. of human beings?

1744. Some of us might say that the

1745. teaching of hell is not very

1746. inclusive, that it's very, very

1747. exclusive, and we have in the back

1748. of our mind this idea that,

1749. you know, we sort of have in our

1750. idea that, you know, you sort of,

1751. we sort of know that maybe God has

1752. to put some sort of people who are

1753. bad into, you know, to have some type

1754. of a punishment, but, you know,

1755. basically we have this sort of idea at

1756. the same time as hell is sort of open

1757. and ended is that basically common

1758. human religion is you go and you do

1759. some things, you do more nice things,

1760. you do bad things, and then God sort of

1761. has this obligation to put you into

1762. heaven, and that sounds all very,

1763. very well and good, but if you think

1764. about it for a second, it's actually

1765. not very inclusive at all.

1766. What about people who just really

1767. aren't going to be able to manage

  1768. that?

1769. I'm not making a political comment on

1770. this right now, but I'm just using

1771. something which is very common in the

  1772. press.

1773. How many people think Rob Ford would

1774. be able to manage that?

1775. I know that Rob Ford has his

1776. defenders, but boy, there's not many

1777. people who think that Rob Ford would

1778. be able to manage that, do you?

1779. In fact, the idea that sort of we just

1780. do more good things than we do bad

1781. things, and we sort of define what

1782. those are, that actually ends up

1783. usually leaving out any type of hope

1784. for people who just really seem to be

  1785. deeply messed up.

1786. And the idea that somehow God would

1787. just sort of force, can you just

1788. imagine that the writers of the

1789. Toronto Star or the CBC, that they

1790. were going to have to spend eternity

  1791. with Rob Ford?

1792. And they would say to God, how dare you

  1793. make me do that?

1794. How dare you make me do that?

1795. And just sort of in, in fact, even this

1796. idea that God is unjust sending people to

1797. hell, we can start to get a sense that it

1798. might very well be that in this particular

1799. text in Revelation 20, it emphasizes that

1800. God throws, but in fact, the other

1801. teaching in the rest of Scripture that

1802. somehow or another, hell is something

1803. that we freely choose, we start to see

1804. that that actually starts to make some

  1805. sense.

1806. That that actually starts to make some

1807. sense, because how dare you is the

  1808. anthem that we sing.

1809. See, here's what the Bible teaches.

1810. Since no one deserves heaven, unless God

1811. intervenes, hell is my destination.

1812. Since no one deserves heaven, unless God

1813. intervenes, hell is my destination.

1814. And I want to stand before you, and I want

1815. to tell you, and I say this with no sense

1816. of pride, no sense of vanity, no sense of

  1817. arrogance.

1818. But Spurgeon once famously said that the

1819. Christian faith is just one beggar telling

1820. another beggar where to find bread.

1821. And I can tell you that apart from what

1822. Jesus has done for me on the cross, that my

  1823. destination is hell.

1824. Because I've given my life to Jesus, God, not

1825. weighing my merits, but pardoning my

  1826. offenses, my destination.

1827. If I was to die today, I would not go to

  1828. hell.

1829. I would go to heaven.

1830. And I say that to you not because I think

1831. that I am better than anybody here in the

1832. room, not because I think there's anything

1833. in me particularly worthy of going to

  1834. heaven.

1835. But I understand that no one deserves

1836. heaven, and unless God intervenes, hell is

  1837. my destination.

1838. I understand that the cry, how dare you, is

1839. a cry that deeply resonates within my soul and

  1840. within my spirit.

1841. And unless God intervenes, hell is not only

1842. where God would put me, but hell is what I

  1843. would freely choose.

1844. See, here's what the Bible teaches, and we'll

1845. just say one more thing after this and then

  1846. we'll wrap up.

1847. That God takes no delight in the death of a

1848. sinner, but rather that I will turn from my

  1849. wickedness and live.

1850. It's almost a direct quote from the book of

1851. Ezekiel where it's said three times.

1852. Those of you familiar with Anglican tradition

1853. in morning prayer will know that that's a

1854. regular part of morning and evening prayer.

1855. God takes no delight in the death of a sinner, but

1856. rather that I will turn from my wickedness and

  1857. live.

1858. And what happens is if you go back and look

1859. more clearly at Revelation chapter 20, you'll

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

1860. see that there's two books.

1861. And one of the two books that we're judged by is

1862. the Lamb's Book of Life.

1863. And one of the things to describe conversion is

1864. that we're taken out of the books and put into

1865. the Lamb's Book of Life.

1866. And how does that transfer happen?

1867. It happens because on the cross, Jesus took my

1868. punishment, destruction, and banishment, and

1869. offers me his standing with God.

  1870. Hallelujah.

1871. Remember I described that hell is the place of

  1872. punishment, destruction, and banishment.

1873. And the Bible teaches that on the cross, Jesus took

1874. my punishment, my destruction, and my banishment.

1875. He took mine, and he offers me his standing with God.

1876. That's what Jesus does on the cross.

1877. He experiences the functional equivalent of hell for me.

1878. The punishment that brought me peace was upon him.

1879. By his wounds, I am healed.

1880. All we like sheep have gone astray, and the Lord has laid on

1881. him the iniquity of us all.

1882. Before Jesus died on the cross, he's in the Garden of

1883. Gethsemane, and he knows that when he dies upon the cross,

1884. he's not dying for anything that he has done wrong himself.

1885. But that literally, literally, all of the things that I've

1886. done wrong that demand punishment, he will have those fall

1887. upon him, and he will take my punishment.

1888. And the imagery is of the cup of wrath of God.

1889. And Jesus will drink my cup for me when he dies upon the cross.

1890. And his destruction is clear.

1891. He dies a death, a horrible death upon the cross.

1892. And his banishment from the Father is also clear.

1893. I've been married to Louise for 32 years.

1894. You know, I can have somebody that I meet at Starbucks.

1895. Sometimes people ask me what I do at Starbucks, and I tell them I'm

1896. a pastor of a church, and you can see their face fall.

1897. And you can just tell that they're rejecting me because I say that.

1898. I can tell they've just rejected me.

1899. And I just met the person just a few moments ago, and I feel some pain with it.

  1900. One of the...

1901. But if Louise, after 32 years of marriage, was to leave me, to tell me I had to leave

1902. her and that I could never see her again, the pain of that would be unbearable for me.

1903. And Jesus, who is the second person of the Trinity, and the Holy Spirit can be understood

1904. as the unending love of the Son of God for the Father and the unending love of the Father

  1905. for the Son.

1906. And that has been going on for all eternity.

1907. And on the cross, as Jesus bears the rebellion and the sin and my death in his very, very person,

1908. as he bears my punishment and my destruction, he experiences my banishment from God.

1909. And we see that on the cross when Jesus cries out, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

1910. And he does it because he's bearing my punishment, my destruction, and my banishment.

1911. And he offers me his perfect standing before the Father.

1912. And when I put my faith and trust in Jesus, that means I'm accepting what he's done for me

1913. on the cross and the great exchange that he offers.

  1914. Please stand.

1915. The Christian life begins by saying, there's something I have to acknowledge.

1916. And that I have to acknowledge is that the anthem of my life is, how dare you?

1917. And then there's something that I need to believe.

1918. I need to believe that Jesus has dealt with that which keeps me far from God.

1919. And then I have to consider something.

1920. I have to consider that if I accept what was just written on the screen, if I understand

1921. and accept that Jesus has borne my punishment, my destruction, and my banishment, and he offers

1922. me his place with the Father, that he can reconcile me to God and make me God's adopted child forever,

1923. if I accept that, if I accept Jesus into my life as Savior and Lord, that as I'm gripped

1924. by the gospel, my life will change.

1925. But then there's that moment of decision, that knowing, acknowledging, and believing, and considering

1926. the cost, still we would have Jesus as our Savior.

1927. We would have Jesus not only save us from our anthem, but that he would teach us to sing a

1928. new song, worthy is the Lamb that was slain, to receive power and glory and honor and might

1929. and majesty and love forever and ever.

  1930. Amen.

1931. And there's no time better than right now to make such a transaction with God and to speak

1932. to Jesus and say, Jesus, you know what the anthem of my life has been.

1933. Still you died for me on the cross.

1934. Please take me as yours and be my Savior and my Lord.

1935. There's no time better than now to pray such a prayer to God.

1936. And your own words are all that need, but I'm going to very slowly, with gaps, pray a prayer

  1937. to help you.

1938. And if that is what the Holy Spirit is leading you to do, you don't have to pray it out loud,

1939. you don't have to do anything to show it, but just repeat after me, not speaking to me,

1940. because I'm not the Savior, but speaking to Jesus.

1941. Maybe it's appropriate we pray it with a screaming child in the background.

  1942. The echoes of hell.

1943. So if the Holy Spirit has put such a burden on your heart, just quietly to God, not to

1944. me or to your neighbor, but quietly to God, say this.

1945. Jesus, I acknowledge that my anthem has been, how dare you.

1946. I am sorry for this, and I do not want to sing it ever again.

1947. Thank you for dying for me, and bearing the punishment, destruction, and banishment I deserve.

1948. Please come into my life as my Savior and my Lord.

1949. And never let me go.

1950. Make me your disciple, gripped by the gospel, living for your glory.

  1951. Amen.

1952. I'm just going to pray in closing.

1953. Father, you know those of us who've once again done some type of transaction with you

1954. because we realize that even though we've been redeemed, that that song of how dare you

1955. has been becoming the song of our lives.

1956. And Father, we know we turned from that when we gave our lives to Jesus, and it's growing

1957. within us, and we thank you that you've delivered it from us.

1958. And we ask, Father, that you would do a mighty work of your Holy Spirit in our lives to have

1959. that be stilled and have that be quietened.

1960. And Father, we give you thanks once again for what your Son did for us on the cross.

1961. May what he did for us on the cross so grip us that we can live for your glory.

1962. Father, we thank you for what he did for us on the cross.

1963. And Father, if there are any here who have for the first time prayed and given their lives

1964. to Jesus, we ask that your Holy Spirit would fall upon them with might and power and deep

  1965. conviction.

1966. Seal such a decision to them and seal them to be yours forever and ever and ever and ever

  1967. and ever and ever.

  1968. Amen.

  1969. In Jesus' name, amen.

  1970. Amen.

  1971. Amen.

  1972. Amen.
