  1. We're going to think together about what we've already thought about over the last couple of weeks as we looked at the story of Peter and Cornelius, that the gospel transforms people.

  2. The gospel crosses boundaries, crosses cultures, and brings change.

  3. And here we're going to find Luke restating that reality in a different context.

  4. First, we had a lecturer, I remember having a lecturer a number of years ago who loved to start each of his lectures by recapping and restating what had come the previous day or the previous week.

  5. It really had a clear focus of what he wanted us to learn as we went through the course.

  6. And in a sense, we can see Dr. Luke is doing the same thing for us here.

  7. So he's just spent two chapters there or thereabouts in great detail telling us about how God in his providence brought this Roman soldier Cornelius and the apostle Peter together so that Cornelius' life could be changed as he heard the good news of Jesus.

  8. And then he returns back in time a little bit to the story of what we have here of the church in Antioch.

  9. So if you look at verse 19, you see that Luke is putting his history together in a particular way.

  10. And it says there, now those who'd been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled, and so it goes.

  11. Stephen's persecution we first learn of in Acts chapter 8.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  12. And then the story moves away from that emphasis, but now it's coming back.

  13. He's decided to go back in time to show another example of how when the gospel of grace comes to an individual or to a community, it brings change.

  14. And he's in particular trying to make the point that the gospel of grace is for all.

  15. That the good news of Jesus' Savior who came to rescue us by dying for us to forgive our sins and to give us eternal life isn't just for Jewish people.

  16. It's just not for religious people.

  17. It's for all.

  18. And so Dr. Luke shows how the gospel now moves into new territory, to Antioch.

  19. Now Antioch as a city was known in its day for being very cosmopolitan.

  20. It was a center of trade, good access to the Mediterranean.

  21. It had people from the east.

  22. It had Greco-Roman influences.

  23. It had a big Jewish population.

  24. So it was known for its business and commerce.

  25. But it was also known for its moral corruption.

  26. It was a city of some 300,000 or so people.

  27. So an influential, prosperous, corrupt city.

  28. But grace comes.

  29. Jesus comes and change comes as a result.

  30. And so what I want us to do this evening, very briefly, is to show from Luke's account here how grace is in action in Antioch.

  31. First of all, when we see how the message is shared and believed.

  32. So verse 19, we discover that persecution in Jerusalem leads Christians to spread out.

  33. So they travel as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, telling the message only to Jews.

  34. Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.

  35. So just as we begin, here is a reminder of the providence of God, that God works sometimes in surprising ways for his own glory.

  36. The church in Jerusalem certainly wouldn't have chosen the path of persecution.

  37. But nevertheless, God works through their suffering and the gospel spreads.

  38. And that's a principle that we see throughout the Bible.

  39. We see it back in Genesis, when Joseph says to his brothers, that you sold me as a slave.

  40. You intended evil, but God intended it for good.

  41. He ended up in Egypt so he could save many lives.

  42. And we see it most particularly at the cross.

  43. Where at one and the same time, we can see that wicked men wanted to get rid of Jesus.

  44. So they nail him to the cross, but it was always God's foreordained plan that his death would be the means of salvation.

  45. So God's providence can work through persecution and suffering.

  46. But as they begin to spread, some of them stay in what we might call their comfort zone.

  47. So the message of Jesus stays within the Jewish community.

  48. But there's others who go to the Greeks.

  49. So here's this cross-cultural mission beginning to happen.

  50. And they bring the same gospel message that Peter shared with Cornelius.

  51. Cornelius.

  52. So last time we recognized that Peter brought to Cornelius the news of the perfect life of Jesus.

  53. That he died on the cross under God's curse so that we might be set free from the curse of God.

  54. To be accepted by God.

  55. That he rose again.

  56. And that now he's Lord and King and Judge and he's coming back.

  57. And he invited Cornelius to faith and repentance.

  58. And these men going to Antioch do the same thing.

  59. And people are becoming Christians.

  60. They're trusting.

  61. They're turning from sin.

  62. They're turning away from their old life.

  63. They're turning to God.

  64. Now it's interesting to ask the question, who is sharing their faith?

  65. Who are the people who are bringing the gospel across cultures to Antioch?

  66. And the answer is we don't know who they are.

  67. We don't know their names.

  68. These aren't the apostles.

  69. These are what we might call regular Christians.

  70. People like us who are sharing the gospel.

  71. A number of years ago I read a really interesting book called Evangelism in the Early Church.

  72. And it was making the point in lots of different ways that it was the regular Christians that were so influential in this spread of the gospel.

  73. Within cities and towns and villages and across boundaries.

  74. So the women would go to the river to wash their clothes.

  75. And they'd be talking about Jesus while they were doing that.

  76. Or they would be using their home and inviting extended family and friends to come for meals.

  77. And they'd be talking about their new faith in the Lord Jesus.

  78. And in those very natural ways the church was growing.

  79. It's a great encouragement for us as those who don't have perhaps a huge amount of influence and standing that God chooses the weak.

  80. And the ordinary for his own glory.

  81. As his people live on purpose that the glory of Jesus might be known.

  82. Here we see evidence that God doesn't require people who are specially called, specially trained.

  83. It's just regular people speaking about who Jesus is and what Jesus has done.

  84. And it changes at least some people in this city.

  85. So the messengers on the one hand, they're obviously gripped by this amazing story of the love of Jesus for them.

  86. And they decide with great courage to move out with that message.

  87. Facing persecution, then going to an unknown culture, to an unknown city, to share the gospel.

  88. The people in Antioch believe and the church is born.

  89. And this is God's grace in action.

  90. As people become Christians, as people share the gospel, God is working.

  91. We also see God's grace in action, in encouragement that is given and received.

  92. So here we find ourselves.

  93. So this morning we were thinking about the church in Jerusalem and Barnabas and Saul with the church.

  94. And here we are back this evening with the church in Jerusalem and with Barnabas.

  95. Now Barnabas wasn't this man's real name.

  96. His real name was Joseph.

  97. Barnabas was a nickname given to him by the Christians, which means son of encouragement.

  98. It's a wonderful nickname to have.

  99. And so what I want us to see is the reason why Barnabas has been sent and to think about Barnabas' example for us.

  100. So in verse 21 it says,

  101. The Lord's hand was with them and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.

  102. And then verse 22,

  103. News of this reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem.

  104. And they sent Barnabas to Antioch.

  105. So Mother Church Jerusalem hears about this thing happening over in Antioch.

  106. And they want to send someone to find out more.

  107. And who do they send is really significant because they send Barnabas.

  108. So their idea isn't, let's shut this thing down, but let's encourage this new church to grow.

  109. And so Barnabas, as we discover, he spends a year looking after this young church,

  110. this church made up of people from different cultures,

  111. and he spends that time encouraging them.

  112. So I want us to spend a few minutes thinking about Barnabas' example

  113. of what gospel encouragement might look like,

  114. what it looked like for him, what it might look like for us,

  115. that we might want to follow his example.

  116. So a few things that we see about Barnabas, the son of encouragement.

  117. First of all, we can say from his example that a gospel encourager

  118. sees and celebrates what is good.

  119. So the beginning of verse 23,

  120. When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad.

  121. Now let's bear in mind that this is a brand new church,

  122. coming from a very cosmopolitan city,

  123. people being saved out of all kinds of backgrounds.

  124. So it's not going to be a perfect church.

  125. It's not going to be a church without faults or weaknesses.

  126. But what we see is that Barnabas overlooks those to focus on grace,

  127. to focus on God's work in their lives.

  128. It's the same thing that you see so often from Paul in his letters,

  129. in his introductory thanksgiving for the churches.

  130. Even to a church like Corinth, which, as you read the letter,

  131. has a lot of problems.

  132. He's still so thankful for the fact that they're trusting in the Lord Jesus.

  133. They're not perfect, but God's grace is in evidence.

  134. And Barnabas here celebrates that.

  135. This is a heart attitude, isn't it?

  136. It's not a heart that wants to grumble first,

  137. to find fault in the first instance.

  138. It's a heart that wants to say, well done.

  139. It wants to encourage others towards Christ likeness.

  140. So to be a gospel encourager means seeing and celebrating

  141. and choosing to focus on what's good and what's positive.

  142. Secondly, we can say that a gospel encourager

  143. is glad wherever God is working.

  144. And again, the beginning of verse 23,

  145. it's when he arrives in Antioch

  146. and he sees the evidence of the grace of God that he's glad.

  147. Now, he could have said,

  148. why is God working here and not back in Jerusalem?

  149. Why am I needing to move from the mother church,

  150. from the home church, all the way over here

  151. to see God's powerful grace in action at this point in time?

  152. But he doesn't.

  153. He doesn't become jealous

  154. because his concern is not for himself,

  155. for his tribe, for building up his empire.

  156. He cares for God's honor and God's glory,

  157. not building up his own kingdom.

  158. And so he is glad to see wherever God's at work.

  159. And I think that's something that's maybe really important

  160. for us in the West.

  161. You know, we know that Christianity is

  162. sort of static or even in decline

  163. and lots of people are dismissive

  164. and we don't hear stories of lots of people

  165. coming to faith in Jesus.

  166. And we can become despondent of something.

  167. And that's why it's great to be connected to people

  168. from other parts of the world

  169. and to hear stories that God is still working

  170. in dramatic ways.

  171. He's still working in places like North Korea

  172. and Syria and Iraq for his own glory.

  173. And so as we hear the stories of the global church,

  174. we can be reminded and be glad

  175. that God's kingdom is growing.

  176. Another thing that we notice

  177. is that a gospel encourager directs others

  178. to keep loving Jesus.

  179. So end of verse 23,

  180. when he's glad he encouraged them all

  181. to remain true to the Lord with all their heart.

  182. So he's spending time with them.

  183. He's walking with them.

  184. He's living life with them

  185. and he's encouraging them to persevere in their faith.

  186. He's urging them to stay devoted to the Lord Jesus.

  187. At the moment, they're young and enthusiastic.

  188. What will they do when trial and trouble comes?

  189. He encourages them to stay devoted to the Lord Jesus.

  190. We just, this week, been helping Sebastian,

  191. our youngest, to learn how to ride a pedal bike.

  192. And so small inclines are quite the challenge.

  193. And there was a few times yesterday

  194. where we took him out on a fairly lengthy trip.

  195. And there was a couple of times

  196. where you could see towards the top of the hill,

  197. he was beginning to sort of lose heart

  198. that he'd ever get there.

  199. But it's amazing what the encouragement of,

  200. come on, you can do it, does

  201. for just keeping somebody going,

  202. getting them over the line.

  203. And you can see that Barnabas is doing that

  204. with the church.

  205. He's come alongside them to encourage them,

  206. to keep pointing them to Jesus,

  207. that they would keep following him.

  208. And tied up with that,

  209. a gospel encourager has a compelling quality

  210. to their lives.

  211. Verse 24 in the NIV begins,

  212. he was a good man.

  213. But in the Greek, it said,

  214. it would say,

  215. he was glad and encouraged them all

  216. to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts,

  217. for he was a good man,

  218. or because he was a good man,

  219. full of the Holy Spirit and faith.

  220. And a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

  221. So his lifestyle, his words,

  222. his character, his manner,

  223. are encouraging people to stick with Jesus,

  224. or to begin thinking about who is Jesus,

  225. or to come to faith in Jesus.

  226. That he is a man with integrity

  227. in his words and in his lifestyle,

  228. that people obviously find attractive,

  229. that they're looking at him thinking,

  230. I want to be like him,

  231. so I want to keep following Jesus,

  232. or I want to know what makes this guy Barnabas so different.

  233. So they're discovering Jesus for themselves.

  234. Another thing that we see from the example of Barnabas

  235. is that a gospel encourager gladly serves with others.

  236. I love what happens in verse 25 and 26,

  237. as many people are being brought to the Lord,

  238. Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul.

  239. And when he found him, he brought him to Antioch.

  240. So for a whole year,

  241. Barnabas and Saul met with the church

  242. and taught great numbers of people.

  243. So Barnabas clearly is not somebody who's competitive

  244. or jealous for success.

  245. He's not saying, this is my work,

  246. these are my people,

  247. but rather he happily calls Paul,

  248. the missionary to the Gentiles,

  249. to come and assist him to use his gifts

  250. to serve this young church.

  251. So taken together,

  252. we see why from time to time Barnabas appears

  253. and Luke sort of highlights

  254. the character of Barnabas for us

  255. because he's got a wonderful life.

  256. He'd be a wonderful example to follow.

  257. We would all love to have,

  258. we all need to have a Barnabas in our lives

  259. and to desire to be a Barnabas to others

  260. and to have a church where these kind of values permeate,

  261. where we're seeing the positives

  262. and not simply the negatives

  263. and learning to celebrate those things,

  264. where we are building up,

  265. not tearing down,

  266. where we're celebrating what God does in others

  267. here and in other places,

  268. where we're encouraging one another

  269. to keep going with faith,

  270. to keep following Jesus,

  271. where we're determining to have that lifestyle

  272. with the help of the Holy Spirit,

  273. where we might encourage others

  274. to think about the Christian faith

  275. because of the way we seek to live.

  276. So where does encouragement begin?

  277. Perhaps it's as simple as

  278. thank you for your help today.

  279. Thank you for serving the church today.

  280. There's lots of people every Sunday

  281. that are serving in lots of different ways

  282. and sometimes we can forget

  283. how important a thank you is.

  284. Perhaps it might be

  285. sending someone a quick note to say,

  286. I'm praying for you in this situation

  287. or sharing from God's word.

  288. here's what I've been learning this week

  289. about God and his character

  290. or about what Jesus has done

  291. and sharing that

  292. so that someone else might be encouraged and helped.

  293. Asking someone practically,

  294. how can I help you in this situation

  295. that you are in?

  296. Maybe it's just by showing up

  297. and getting involved.

  298. Getting involved in choir

  299. or a community discipleship group

  300. or a women's Bible study.

  301. It's an encouragement

  302. to the other people in the group.

  303. But what we understand from Barnabas

  304. is that the gospel of grace

  305. should make us graceful people

  306. and graceful people tend to encourage others

  307. by their lives.

  308. So there's that nickname Barnabas,

  309. but there's another nickname

  310. that we find in this section,

  311. this time given by the people of Antioch

  312. to this young church.

  313. End of verse 26.

  314. The disciples were called Christians

  315. first at Antioch.

  316. So after a year of spending time

  317. under the teaching of Barnabas and Saul,

  318. people in the city

  319. are now looking at this young church

  320. and saying,

  321. these are the Christ people

  322. because they're talking about Jesus.

  323. They're seeking to live in the ways of Jesus.

  324. Their community,

  325. their church is centered

  326. on the personal work of Jesus.

  327. I came across a story

  328. of a Bible teacher

  329. by the name of Harry Ironside

  330. who went on a mission trip to China.

  331. And he noticed as he went from place to place,

  332. he was often introduced as

  333. Yasu Yan.

  334. And he couldn't figure out at first

  335. what this meant.

  336. And so he asked somebody

  337. and he was told

  338. that in Cantonese,

  339. Yasu,

  340. apologies for the bad pronunciation,

  341. means Jesus

  342. and Yan

  343. means man.

  344. So as he was traveling,

  345. here was this man,

  346. Harry Ironside,

  347. being known as the Jesus man.

  348. That's a great nickname to aspire to,

  349. just as Barnabas

  350. is a great nickname to aspire to.

  351. So it is to be

  352. a person,

  353. one of the Christ

  354. people.

  355. So what we see about this church

  356. in Antioch

  357. that they talked

  358. and lived

  359. life centered on Jesus

  360. so that the rest of the city

  361. knew about it.

  362. And here's testimony again

  363. to grace in action.

  364. That the love of Jesus

  365. is flowing beyond

  366. their community

  367. into the rest of the city.

  368. Now the last way

  369. that we can see grace

  370. in action

  371. is in solidarity

  372. and help given.

  373. And again,

  374. this connects us

  375. with where we were

  376. this morning

  377. in Galatians chapter 2.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  378. So we read in verse 27

  379. and 28

  380. of this prophet

  381. by the name of Agapus.

  382. And Agapus,

  383. led by the Spirit,

  384. predicts a severe famine

  385. and the disciples

  386. decide to send

  387. poor relief.

  388. Notice

  389. that they decide

  390. to send poor relief

  391. back to Christians

  392. in Judea.

  393. Which again

  394. is a really lovely touch.

  395. This multicultural church

  396. up in Antioch

  397. is going to provide relief

  398. for the church

  399. in Jerusalem

  400. as it found itself

  401. in difficulty.

  402. So here is evidence

  403. again for the success

  404. of gospel mission

  405. in Antioch.

  406. Because here are

  407. these young Christians

  408. and they're putting

  409. their faith

  410. into practice.

  411. Here is their faith

  412. coming out

  413. in love and service

  414. and not just

  415. among their own,

  416. they're crossing

  417. cultures

  418. to do so.

  419. Here is

  420. practical expression

  421. of this fact

  422. that in Christ Jesus

  423. we are all one.

  424. The gospel

  425. has made them

  426. one.

  427. And it finds

  428. expression

  429. in their giving.

  430. I made mention

  431. in my prayers

  432. this morning

  433. of Patrick Jock

  434. who we had with us

  435. a few months ago

  436. from South Sudan.

  437. He would often

  438. talk about

  439. the church

  440. in South Sudan

  441. feeling isolated

  442. and alone

  443. because politically

  444. I guess that's

  445. where they're at

  446. and the church

  447. is small

  448. and young.

  449. But then he said

  450. of his trip

  451. so he went

  452. on a wee trip

  453. around meeting

  454. various free church

  455. congregations

  456. and ministers

  457. he said

  458. your fellowship

  459. and your prayers

  460. remind us

  461. that we're not alone.

  462. So in that really

  463. simple way

  464. of welcoming

  465. and praying

  466. there is that

  467. solidarity

  468. there's that sense

  469. we're not alone

  470. we're part of

  471. a bigger kingdom.

  472. We met a few years ago

  473. when we were in the Philippines

  474. a couple of missionaries

  475. who were working

  476. with a tribal group

  477. on one of the small islands

  478. in the Philippines

  479. a tribe called

  480. the Mungyum people

  481. very poor

  482. many of them

  483. would come to the cities

  484. and they were

  485. sort of professional beggars

  486. but these missionaries

  487. were trying to get

  488. schools on the go

  489. and they were

  490. Bible teaching.

  491. But anyway

  492. about three years ago

  493. when the last big storm

  494. hit that region

  495. of the Philippines

  496. this mountain tribe

  497. heard about the plight

  498. of another tribe

  499. down the coast

  500. that had been

  501. really badly hit

  502. and they sent

  503. some of their

  504. very scarce

  505. rice supplies

  506. down to this

  507. coastal church

  508. as a way to say

  509. to their brothers

  510. and sisters in Christ

  511. we love you

  512. and we want to help.

  513. And so we can see

  514. that the gospel

  515. takes hold

  516. in Antioch

  517. as they want to have

  518. that same kind of

  519. practical love

  520. and service.

  521. just as Paul

  522. reminded the church

  523. in Corinth

  524. when he wanted

  525. to encourage

  526. the church

  527. in Corinth

  528. to give generously

  529. to aid

  530. to bring relief

  531. in 2 Corinthians 8

    2 Corinthians 8:9

  532. verse 9

  533. he said

  534. you know

  535. the grace

  536. of our Lord

  537. Jesus Christ

  538. that though

  539. he was rich

  540. yet for your sakes

  541. he became poor

  542. that you

  543. through his poverty

  544. might become rich.

  545. so there's something

  546. in the gospel

  547. there's something

  548. of that movement

  549. of Jesus

  550. from glory

  551. to humiliation

  552. and death

  553. on the cross

  554. that is intended

  555. to spark in us

  556. generosity

  557. and help

  558. when we can

  559. give it

  560. and we see that

  561. in Antioch.

  562. So that was grace

  563. in Antioch.

  564. I guess the challenge

  565. for us is thinking

  566. about what about grace

  567. in our own lives

  568. what about grace

  569. in Edinburgh

  570. or wherever we come from

  571. because just like

  572. those first

  573. missionaries

  574. who cross cultures

  575. to go to Antioch

  576. we too are called

  577. to live lives

  578. that allow the grace

  579. of God

  580. to be felt

  581. and received

  582. by our words

  583. and our actions

  584. and so we can support

  585. and encourage

  586. one another

  587. to be doing that

  588. and that we are placed

  589. in community

  590. to encourage

  591. one another

  592. to celebrate

  593. and to seek

  594. to see more

  595. of God's grace

  596. in the lives

  597. of others

  598. and we have

  599. resources

  600. and opportunities

  601. to practically

  602. help others

  603. in Edinburgh

  604. and around the world

  605. so that grace

  606. is felt

  607. and so that God

  608. is honoured.

  609. Let's pray

  610. together.

  611. Amen.
