  1. Good morning.

  2. As Tobin has mentioned, we're starting a new series today on God's story and our story.

  3. And over the next 11 weeks or so, we're going to be going through the story of the Bible as a church.

  4. And each of us here today has a story of our lives.

  5. We have somewhere that we've been, somewhere that we're going, somewhere that we are now.

  6. And our stories are shaped by a number of different things.

  7. They're shaped by culture and what culture says is valuable and what culture says is important.

  8. They're shaped by our past experiences.

  9. We can see what we've been through and we know what we want more of and what we don't want more of.

  10. Maybe they're shaped by our friends and what our friends say is good and valuable and worth pursuing in life.

  11. And just like each of us has a story, God has a story.

  12. God is working in and through history.

  13. With a goal in mind.

  14. And he tells us about this story in the Bible.

  15. The Bible, if you don't know this, is actually a story.

  16. It's a collection of 66 books that combine to make one story.

  17. And there's smaller individual stories within these books.

  18. But they combine to tell one bigger, greater story.

  19. And that big story of the Bible is supposed to shape and influence each of our lives and our stories.

  20. God gave us the Bible so that the story in there could impact the way that we live today.

  21. And we think that a lot of us, maybe we know the individual stories from the Bible,

  22. but we don't know how they all get together and make one bigger story.

  23. And because of that, it's very hard for us to live in that story because we don't necessarily know what the full story is.

  24. So what we're going to do over the next 11 weeks is we're going to look at this story of the Bible.

  25. And, you know, a lot of us know different stories that we're called and invited to be a part of.

  26. Maybe we know the Disney story.

  27. The world is there for you to be happy and prosper.

  28. And you are a prince or princess waiting for Prince Charming or Snow White or whoever.

  29. And you need to follow your heart to find that perfect someone so that you can live happily ever after.

  30. Maybe we know the Hong Kong story.

  31. It starts out around preschool because you've got to start in the right preschool.

  32. Because if you don't, then your life is over.

  33. Once you get into the right preschool, you spend somewhere around 10 to 13 years in the best international schools

  34. before being sent out to the prime boarding schools in the U.S. or U.K.

  35. You graduate high school and move on to the Ivy Leagues or Oxford or Cambridge.

  36. And you graduate and get a job as a doctor or a lawyer or investment banker.

  37. You work for a few years.

  38. You save up your first couple million.

  39. Around the age of, like, 30 to 35, you find someone of the opposite gender who's attractive and equally wealthy

  40. and has business connections that can help you move forward in life, and you marry them.

  41. And maybe you have a girlfriend on the side in China who can keep you company when you're on business trips.

  42. And then a few years later, you have a couple children to secure your legacy.

  43. You keep working until you reach your financial goals.

  44. Then you retire.

  45. You travel the world.

  46. And if you have enough money left over, you donate it to somewhere so that you can get your name on a building

  47. and future generations can remember who you are.

  48. And that's the Hong Kong story of what it means to have this great, wonderful, prosperous, full life.

  49. And here's the thing, is that if we know these other stories but we don't know the Bible story,

  50. we're going to live by these other stories.

  51. And if what the Bible says is true, then living our lives according to these other stories

  52. rather than according to the Bible story is something that will lead to disappointment and death.

  53. If the Bible story is true, the only way to a full, lasting, rewarding, fulfilling life

  54. is by being a part of that story and living in that story.

  55. So we want to take time over the next few months as a church to focus on this story, to get into this story.

  56. And it's not just something that we want to be an academic exercise.

  57. It's something we want to shape our lives.

  58. And so we've got a couple things outside of Sunday mornings that we're putting together too

  59. in the goal of helping us get into this story.

  60. So Chris Thornton has put together a Bible reading plan that will go alongside of this sermon series.

  61. He'll have it available after church if anyone wants to grab it for you.

  62. You know, it's New Year's.

  63. It's that time where we make those resolutions like,

  64. I want to read my Bible this year, and then we never do.

  65. This is something that's intended to help you with that,

  66. to get you into that discipline, to help you understand the full story of the Bible.

  67. So you can grab that Bible reading plan from Chris after church.

  68. Also, our community groups over the next few weeks will be going through the story of the Bible as groups.

  69. And that will be a great chance for us to get together in the groups,

  70. look at the story and discuss it as a group,

  71. and be more intentional about applying it to our own lives specifically,

  72. and having people around us who can talk to us about it and encourage us in it

  73. and help us to get into that story ourselves in our lives.

  74. And again, if you're not in a community group,

  75. it's a great opportunity to reinforce what we're learning here

  76. and get that story to be a part of your life.

  77. So if you're not in a community group, talk to Chris Thornton after church.

  78. Do you want to, like, wave to everyone so they can see who you are?

  79. This guy right here.

  80. And he will help you get connected to a community group.

  81. And also, Watermark Kids and Watermark Youth are going through this same story in their classes right now.

  82. So if you have kids or youth that are involved in those ministries,

  83. after church you can talk to them on the ride home and compare notes with them

  84. so that it can be something that's being discussed in your homes throughout the week

  85. and not just something that stays here on Sunday mornings.

  86. And so today we're starting this story looking at creation.

  87. And now, for those of you who don't know much about the Bible,

  88. creation is a huge topic.

  89. We could sit here for a year and have a sermon series on creation

  90. that lasts the entire year and still not exhaust the theme of creation.

  91. And so trying to cover it all in one sermon

  92. is obviously going to leave lots of important stuff out.

  93. And so if I'm talking about creation today

  94. and there's important stuff about creation that you feel like I'm not saying,

  95. you're right, I'm not saying lots of important stuff.

  96. But what we're trying to do today is we're looking at it through a specific lens,

  97. looking at a specific angle.

  98. What we're trying to look at is two primary things.

  99. One, how does the story of creation lay the foundation for the rest of the story of the Bible?

  100. And number two, how does that impact the story of our lives today?

  101. How does creation set the foundation for the rest of the Bible story?

  102. And how does that impact our lives today?

  103. So we're not going to take time to look at theories of how the world was created

  104. or how long it actually took or anything like that.

  105. We're looking at how it fits into the story of the Bible

  106. and how that impacts our lives today.

  107. And what we're going to see is that in creation,

  108. God establishes his rule,

  109. God establishes his place,

  110. and God establishes his people.

  111. God establishes his rule,

  112. God establishes his place,

  113. and God establishes his people.

  114. And the first thing is his rule.

  115. Now this is something that from the start flies in the face of our culture.

  116. Our culture story says autonomy is the greatest thing possible.

  117. Our culture repeatedly tells us stories

  118. where the person who stands up and fights the authority is the hero.

  119. Look at the box office from last year,

  120. the top grossing movies from 2014.

  121. What do you have up there?

  122. The Hunger Games.

  123. Teenage girl fights against the oppressive government

  124. who's trying to destroy the lives of their people.

  125. Autonomy is king.

  126. What else is up there?

  127. Lego movie.

  128. Average Joe discovers the key to unlocking the universe

  129. and saving his entire universe from the oppressive overlord.

  130. What's the message?

  131. Fight the authority.

  132. Stand up for you.

  133. Be your own hero.

  134. Don't trust anyone in authority.

  135. That's what culture wants us to believe.

  136. And at the start of creation,

  137. we see God establishing his rule.

  138. Creation sets the precedent

  139. that God is in charge of everything,

  140. everywhere,

  141. and that the proper response of humanity

  142. is obedience and submission to God's rule.

  143. Think about it.

  144. The Bible starts with the four words,

  145. in the beginning, God.

  146. In the beginning, God is there.

  147. We are not.

  148. Actually, in the beginning, God is there,

  149. and nothing else is there.

  150. God is the one who existed in the beginning,

  151. and as such,

  152. he is the only reliable source

  153. for what happened in the beginning

  154. and where the world came from.

  155. Also, as the one who is in the beginning,

  156. God is the self-existing one.

  157. As the one who created everything else,

  158. God is the only one

  159. who's not reliant on an outside source

  160. for his existence.

  161. If you think about it,

  162. the Bible says God created everything.

  163. The earth, you and me,

  164. the trees, the stars, the animals,

  165. everything was created by him.

  166. Everything is reliant upon

  167. an outside source for our existence.

  168. That outside source being God.

  169. God, as the one who was in the beginning,

  170. is not reliant on anything

  171. outside of himself to exist.

  172. Everything else exists

  173. because God chose for it to exist,

  174. and God exists.

  175. And as God is this pre-existing one

  176. who existed before everything else,

  177. and the self-existing one

  178. who's not reliant on anything else

  179. for his existence,

  180. God establishes his rule over everything.

  181. And God establishes his rule

  182. over everything with his word.

  183. What we see in Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  184. is that after God creates the heavens

  185. and the earth,

  186. the earth is formless,

  187. it's void, it's dark,

  188. and then in Genesis 3,

  189. God speaks.

  190. And as God speaks,

  191. the words that God speaks

  192. are accomplished.

  193. God says,

  194. let there be light,

  195. and there is light.

  196. God says,

  197. let the waters separate above and below,

  198. and they do.

  199. God says,

  200. let dry land come up out of the waters,

  201. and it does.

  202. God says,

  203. how about some trees on this land,

  204. and they're there.

  205. God says,

  206. let's have sun, moon, stars,

  207. and they're there.

  208. Birds, fish, done.

  209. Animals, all over.

  210. It's there.

  211. God establishes his rule

  212. over everything with his word

  213. by creating through his word.

  214. And not only that,

  215. but after he's created everything else,

  216. God reaches down into the soil

  217. that he's made,

  218. and he shapes a man

  219. in his own image.

  220. And he establishes his authority

  221. over the man

  222. by his word.

  223. It says that God spoke to the man.

  224. He blessed the man and the woman.

  225. He said to them,

  226. be fruitful and multiply

  227. and fill the earth

  228. and subdue it,

  229. have dominion over the fish of the sea

  230. and over the birds of the heavens

  231. and over every living thing

  232. that moves on the earth.

  233. And then it jumps ahead

  234. and it says,

  235. and it was so.

  236. Just like in creation

  237. where God speaks

  238. and it happens,

  239. God blesses the man,

  240. God gives commands

  241. to the man and the woman,

  242. and he says,

  243. do this and it's done.

  244. God establishes his rule

  245. by his word in creation.

  246. God also establishes his rule

  247. by a word of prohibition

  248. to the man and woman.

  249. In Genesis chapter two,

  250. we see that God tells them,

  251. you may surely eat

  252. of every tree that's in the garden,

  253. but of the tree of the knowledge

  254. of good and evil,

  255. you shall not eat.

  256. For in the day that you eat of it,

  257. you shall surely die.

  258. Now God's not unreasonable

  259. with this rule.

  260. He says,

  261. you have every tree in the garden

  262. except for one.

  263. He's not flaunting his authority.

  264. He's not being withholding.

  265. He's blessing them, actually.

  266. He's telling them,

  267. here's the key

  268. to a good, full, plentiful life.

  269. Don't eat from this tree.

  270. Things will go very, very badly

  271. if you do.

  272. I love you.

  273. I don't want that to happen.

  274. Stay away.

  275. And he establishes his rule

  276. with his word again.

  277. And we'll see in later weeks

  278. that Adam and Eve's failure

  279. to obey this word

  280. and live under this rule

  281. causes major issues for them

  282. and for every generation

  283. that comes after them,

  284. including us.

  285. But God's establishment

  286. of his rule by his word,

  287. it's not something,

  288. as culture would have us believe,

  289. that's oppressive.

  290. It's not something

  291. that's mean-hearted.

  292. It's not something

  293. that's withholding

  294. or vindictive.

  295. It's something that's loving.

  296. It's the God

  297. who knows

  298. how the universe works.

  299. The God

  300. who has created everything

  301. and understands best

  302. how it is supposed to operate,

  303. giving his people

  304. the key

  305. to a proper life

  306. within that universe

  307. that he has created.

  308. And so as God

  309. establishes his rule

  310. by his word,

  311. that is a gift of love

  312. from him

  313. to his people.

  314. In the beginning,

  315. God establishes

  316. his rule

  317. by his word.

  318. Not only does God

  319. establish his rule,

  320. he also establishes

  321. his place.

  322. Now in one sense,

  323. the entire universe

  324. is God's place.

  325. God created it all.

  326. God rules over it all.

  327. God owns it all.

  328. God sustains it all.

  329. There's a Dutch theologian

  330. named Abraham Kuyper.

  331. And he had this quote.

  332. He said,

  333. there's not a square inch

  334. in the whole domain

  335. of our human existence

  336. over which Christ,

  337. who is sovereign over all,

  338. does not cry,

  339. mine.

  340. In the entire universe,

  341. there's not one square inch

  342. where God doesn't look at it

  343. and say,

  344. that's mine.

  345. Everything is his.

  346. Everything belongs to him.

  347. But,

  348. in the beginning,

  349. although everything

  350. belongs to him,

  351. he reaches down

  352. and creates

  353. a special place.

  354. He creates a garden.

  355. He creates

  356. a special place

  357. that is,

  358. that is green

  359. and filled with gold

  360. and rivers

  361. and an amazing place.

  362. And this is where

  363. he places

  364. Adam and Eve.

  365. This is the place

  366. where God enters

  367. into a covenant

  368. with his people.

  369. and although

  370. the entire universe,

  371. everything that exists,

  372. is God's place

  373. in a special way,

  374. this Garden of Eden

  375. is God's place

  376. because it is the place

  377. where he and his people

  378. meet together.

  379. It's the place

  380. where he focuses

  381. so much attention

  382. during this act of creation

  383. and in creation,

  384. God establishes

  385. this place of Eden.

  386. creation.

  387. The third thing

  388. that God establishes

  389. in creation

  390. is his people.

  391. If you look at

  392. the story of creation

  393. in the Bible,

  394. it centers around man.

  395. In Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  396. you have this

  397. least to greatest account

  398. where they start off

  399. pretty simple

  400. with,

  401. let there be light.

  402. Oh,

  403. let's have the sky

  404. separated from the water below.

  405. Let's have some land.

  406. And then you get

  407. increasing complexity.

  408. On the land,

  409. let's put trees

  410. and plants

  411. and then fill it

  412. with birds and fish

  413. and then have

  414. like animals

  415. like cows

  416. and hippopotamuses

  417. and elephants

  418. and then let's put

  419. man in there.

  420. And the entire

  421. creation account

  422. in Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  423. is building

  424. and building

  425. and building

  426. until it reaches

  427. its climax

  428. with the creation

  429. of man.

  430. And then in Genesis 2,

  431. we have another

  432. creation account

  433. that centers

  434. around man.

  435. You start out

  436. with Adam

  437. being created.

  438. and God

  439. takes the world

  440. around Adam

  441. and shapes it

  442. for his use.

  443. He puts the trees

  444. and the plants

  445. in the field

  446. so Adam has

  447. food to eat.

  448. He puts

  449. the animals there

  450. so Adam has

  451. things to rule over.

  452. And Adam

  453. names all the animals

  454. and he's

  455. in this garden

  456. that God has created

  457. and he realizes

  458. there's no companion

  459. for him

  460. and God creates

  461. the woman.

  462. and that's the

  463. climax of the

  464. Genesis 2

  465. creation account

  466. is the creation

  467. of woman

  468. to be with man.

  469. That God

  470. creates the world

  471. basically for man.

  472. and God does this

  473. because

  474. he loves

  475. his people.

  476. And when God

  477. creates man

  478. and woman

  479. he creates them

  480. it says

  481. in his image.

  482. There's something

  483. special and unique

  484. and distinct

  485. about humanity

  486. that sets us

  487. apart

  488. from the rest

  489. of creation.

  490. as God

  491. establishes

  492. his people

  493. he doesn't just

  494. take some

  495. random animal

  496. and say like

  497. you're going to be

  498. my special

  499. creation.

  500. No,

  501. he takes us

  502. he shapes us

  503. out of the dust

  504. to the ground

  505. and he creates us

  506. in his image

  507. to be his people.

  508. There have been

  509. lots of theories

  510. throughout the years

  511. about what it means

  512. for us to exist

  513. in God's image

  514. and we don't have

  515. a lot of time

  516. to discuss that today

  517. but there's a couple

  518. important things

  519. about us existing

  520. in God's image

  521. that I do want to say.

  522. First off

  523. the fact that we

  524. were created

  525. in God's image

  526. means that in some way

  527. that's unique to us

  528. and nothing else

  529. in all of creation

  530. shares

  531. we are like God.

  532. In some way

  533. that is unique

  534. and distinct to us

  535. that nothing else

  536. in all of creation

  537. shares

  538. the trees don't share it

  539. the dolphins

  540. don't share it

  541. the birds don't share it

  542. we are like God.

  543. I'm not saying

  544. we are God

  545. that would be bad

  546. but we are like God

  547. in a way that is

  548. unique and distinct

  549. from everything else.

  550. The second important thing

  551. about us existing

  552. as creation

  553. in God's image

  554. is that our creation

  555. in God's image

  556. is closely linked

  557. to our command

  558. to rule over

  559. the rest of creation.

  560. It says

  561. God creates us

  562. in his image

  563. and then he calls us

  564. to rule over

  565. creation for him.

  566. We are God's

  567. representatives

  568. to the rest of creation.

  569. God puts us

  570. on the earth

  571. and he says

  572. I want you

  573. to rule over

  574. the animals

  575. and the birds

  576. and the fish

  577. and

  578. the rhinoceroses

  579. in such a way

  580. that in your ruling

  581. over them

  582. they will see

  583. my goodness.

  584. in such a way

  585. that as you

  586. steward the earth

  587. you're not

  588. exploiting it

  589. you're not

  590. abusing it

  591. you're loving

  592. and gentle

  593. and kind

  594. just as I

  595. am loving

  596. and gentle

  597. and kind

  598. to you.

  599. You're stewards

  600. and you are to act

  601. as my representatives

  602. so that through you

  603. everything else

  604. in all of creation

  605. will see

  606. who I am.

  607. The third important thing

  608. about us existing

  609. in God's image

  610. is that life

  611. in community

  612. is key

  613. to our existence

  614. in God's image.

  615. You notice

  616. God doesn't just

  617. create man

  618. he creates man

  619. and woman together.

  620. Actually when he

  621. just has man there

  622. he says it's

  623. not good yet

  624. there's something wrong

  625. and then he creates

  626. the woman

  627. and he says

  628. this is now

  629. very good.

  630. The community

  631. aspect

  632. of our existence

  633. in God's image

  634. is key.

  635. The Bible teaches us

  636. that God exists

  637. as a trinity

  638. with one God

  639. three persons

  640. which means

  641. that from eternity

  642. God himself

  643. has been existing

  644. in perfect community

  645. and if we want

  646. to be like God

  647. and show the world

  648. around us

  649. who God is

  650. we need to be

  651. in community.

  652. Although there is

  653. the image of God

  654. present in each of us

  655. as individuals

  656. we cannot fully display

  657. the image of God

  658. outside

  659. of a proper community.

  660. and actually

  661. the creation

  662. of community

  663. in the Bible story

  664. is one of

  665. the greatest blessings

  666. given to humanity.

  667. If you look at the story

  668. in Genesis 2

  669. Adam's there

  670. God's making all this stuff

  671. he makes the trees

  672. he makes the animals

  673. Adam's living in paradise

  674. ruling over paradise

  675. and then God makes the woman

  676. and the woman

  677. is finally the thing

  678. where Adam goes

  679. at last

  680. look what God made

  681. for me.

  682. Right?

  683. He's ruling over paradise

  684. but it's when he gets

  685. community

  686. that he says

  687. yes

  688. this is it

  689. this is what I've been

  690. waiting for

  691. this is good

  692. what an amazing gift

  693. from God.

  694. The creation of community

  695. is one of

  696. the greatest blessings

  697. that God gives to man

  698. in the entire story

  699. of creation.

  700. And in this community

  701. that God creates

  702. there's this openness

  703. and this honesty

  704. that marks

  705. the relationship there.

  706. If you look at the last

  707. verse of chapter 2

  708. it says

  709. the man and his wife

  710. were both naked

  711. and not ashamed.

  712. This isn't just

  713. a physical nakedness

  714. this is emotional

  715. this is spiritual

  716. they're completely open

  717. completely honest

  718. completely exposed

  719. and not only with each other

  720. but with God.

  721. They have nothing

  722. to hide from God.

  723. When things go wrong

  724. in the story

  725. one of the first things

  726. you'll see

  727. is that

  728. they run and hide

  729. from God.

  730. But in creation

  731. when God makes them

  732. they're completely open

  733. and honest before him

  734. and have nothing to hide.

  735. They're completely open

  736. and honest before each other.

  737. There's no lying

  738. there's no hiding

  739. there's no covering up

  740. what they've done.

  741. They're completely honest

  742. and open with themselves.

  743. They don't need to lie

  744. to themselves

  745. about what's happened

  746. in the past

  747. to try and avoid

  748. those dark memories.

  749. Things are good

  750. things are right

  751. things are as they should be.

  752. They're completely open

  753. and honest

  754. with the rest of creation.

  755. They have this right relationship

  756. with the rest of the stuff

  757. that God has made.

  758. It's good.

  759. It's right.

  760. It's as it should be.

  761. And next week

  762. like I said

  763. we're going to see

  764. that God

  765. that humanity

  766. fails to live properly

  767. as we're supposed to

  768. in God's image.

  769. And when that happens

  770. this openness

  771. and honesty

  772. and community

  773. is one of the first things

  774. to go.

  775. they hide from God.

  776. They cover up

  777. their nakedness.

  778. Their son murders

  779. his brother.

  780. Things go downhill

  781. so quickly.

  782. But at the start

  783. this community

  784. is one of

  785. the greatest gifts.

  786. And the last thing

  787. I want us to see

  788. about creation

  789. of humanity

  790. in God's image

  791. is that this

  792. flies wildly

  793. in the face

  794. of culture's story

  795. about human worth

  796. and human dignity

  797. and human rights.

  798. What does culture

  799. want us to believe

  800. about who we are?

  801. We're an accident.

  802. There was this explosion

  803. billions of years ago

  804. particles sort of formed

  805. as they flew through space

  806. and the planet arrived

  807. and then

  808. a couple billion years ago

  809. there was this

  810. lightning storm

  811. that hit some

  812. prehistoric gloop

  813. in the ground

  814. and then life came

  815. and we formed

  816. out of that.

  817. And really

  818. there's nothing special

  819. about us

  820. nothing unique

  821. or distinct about us

  822. we're just

  823. overdeveloped animals

  824. who are a product

  825. of accident

  826. and chance.

  827. It's like Tobin

  828. was saying earlier

  829. the men who are

  830. commenting

  831. on these tragedies

  832. throughout the world

  833. who said

  834. yeah so what

  835. we're just

  836. complicated animals

  837. that's how we should act.

  838. And if humanity's

  839. or if culture's story

  840. of where humanity

  841. came from

  842. is true

  843. there's absolutely

  844. no grounds

  845. for human rights

  846. for human worth

  847. for human value.

  848. You know

  849. I just came back

  850. from the States

  851. and in the States

  852. there is so much

  853. talk going on

  854. about race relations

  855. right now.

  856. People are upset

  857. about the way

  858. that police

  859. have been

  860. treating black people

  861. and so there have been

  862. calls for retaliation

  863. against police.

  864. There were people

  865. marching on the streets

  866. in New York

  867. chanting

  868. what do we want

  869. dead cops

  870. when do we want it

  871. now?

  872. a man came up

  873. to New York

  874. and shot two police

  875. officers in cold blood

  876. because people

  877. are so upset

  878. about the way

  879. that black people

  880. are being treated

  881. by police

  882. in America.

  883. And here's the thing

  884. if the Bible story

  885. of creation

  886. of man

  887. in God's image

  888. is true

  889. then absolutely

  890. proper race relations

  891. are important

  892. and significant

  893. and something

  894. that we should

  895. fight for

  896. with everything

  897. we have

  898. because there are

  899. people who exist

  900. in God's image

  901. who are not being

  902. treated as the image

  903. of God.

  904. But if culture's

  905. story of humanity

  906. as an accident

  907. as a product

  908. of chance

  909. is true

  910. then there's no reason

  911. we should fight

  912. for it.

  913. If all we are

  914. is a product

  915. of accident

  916. and chance

  917. then the strong

  918. should pray

  919. on the weak

  920. because that's

  921. how it works

  922. in nature.

  923. If all we are

  924. is a product

  925. of accident

  926. and chance

  927. none of us

  928. have any inherent

  929. worth

  930. as human beings.

  931. Our value

  932. comes from

  933. what we do

  934. what we accomplish

  935. and those

  936. who cannot

  937. accomplish

  938. have no value.

  939. But

  940. if the Bible

  941. is true

  942. if there's

  943. something special

  944. and unique

  945. and distinct

  946. about each of us

  947. because we have

  948. been created

  949. in the image

  950. of God

  951. if there's

  952. something about

  953. the creator

  954. of the universe

  955. that's been

  956. stamped on

  957. to each

  958. of us

  959. as a person

  960. that exists

  961. regardless

  962. of our race

  963. regardless

  964. of our accomplishments

  965. regardless

  966. of our disabilities

  967. it's there

  968. it can't be

  969. removed

  970. from us

  971. then human rights

  972. are incredibly

  973. important.

  974. Every human

  975. being has value

  976. regardless

  977. of our skin

  978. color

  979. regardless

  980. of whether

  981. we've accomplished

  982. anything

  983. with our lives

  984. we have value

  985. because we exist

  986. in God's image.

  987. So creation

  988. in God's image

  989. calls us

  990. to live properly

  991. in community

  992. calls us

  993. to fight

  994. for human rights

  995. it calls us

  996. to treat each other

  997. with dignity

  998. and respect

  999. regardless of

  1000. whether we like

  1001. each other

  1002. or not

  1003. because even

  1004. if I don't like you

  1005. you still carry

  1006. the image of God

  1007. within you

  1008. even if you don't

  1009. like me

  1010. I still carry

  1011. the image of God

  1012. within me.

  1013. And as we look

  1014. at this story

  1015. of the Bible

  1016. creation

  1017. God doesn't just

  1018. establish us

  1019. as people

  1020. in community

  1021. with each other

  1022. he also establishes us

  1023. in a relationship

  1024. with himself.

  1025. There's a German

  1026. theologian

  1027. named Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  1028. and he talks

  1029. about the two

  1030. stories of creation

  1031. in the first couple

  1032. chapters of the

  1033. Bible

  1034. he says

  1035. the first account

  1036. is about humankind

  1037. for God

  1038. the second

  1039. about God

  1040. for humankind

  1041. the first

  1042. is about God

  1043. the creator

  1044. and Lord

  1045. the second

  1046. about the fatherly

  1047. God

  1048. who is near

  1049. at hand

  1050. the first

  1051. is about humankind

  1052. as the final

  1053. work of God

  1054. with the whole

  1055. world created

  1056. before humankind

  1057. the second

  1058. just the other

  1059. way around

  1060. in the beginning

  1061. humanity is created

  1062. and around humankind

  1063. for the sake

  1064. of humankind

  1065. God fashions

  1066. animals

  1067. and birds

  1068. and lets

  1069. the trees

  1070. grow

  1071. basically

  1072. Genesis 1

  1073. is about

  1074. how God

  1075. created us

  1076. for himself

  1077. and Genesis 2

  1078. is about

  1079. how God

  1080. is for us

  1081. Genesis 1

  1082. establishes the fact

  1083. that God

  1084. is creator

  1085. and God

  1086. is Lord

  1087. and God

  1088. is in charge

  1089. and Genesis 2

  1090. establishes the fact

  1091. that although

  1092. he's in charge

  1093. God loves us

  1094. deeply

  1095. and immensely

  1096. and he's there

  1097. for us

  1098. and he cares

  1099. for us

  1100. in these first

  1101. two chapters

  1102. of the Bible

  1103. we have a foundation

  1104. laid for how

  1105. we are to relate

  1106. to God

  1107. with respect

  1108. and honor

  1109. because he is

  1110. the creator

  1111. and Lord

  1112. who is in charge

  1113. but with love

  1114. as a father

  1115. because although

1116. he is so in charge

  1117. and so big

  1118. he cares for us

  1119. in both accounts

  1120. of creation

  1121. we see God

  1122. providing for his people

  1123. he gives us

  1124. everything we need

  1125. for life

  1126. he gives us

  1127. companionship

  1128. he provides us

  1129. with other people

  1130. around us

  1131. and he provides us

  1132. with this awareness

  1133. of who he is

  1134. and the ability

  1135. to have a relationship

  1136. with him

  1137. in both creation accounts

  1138. we see

  1139. that God

  1140. is generous

  1141. to man

  1142. that God

  1143. doesn't just

  1144. create man

  1145. and leave him

  1146. in a wasteland

  1147. but God

  1148. generously

  1149. places man

  1150. in the middle

  1151. of paradise

  1152. God generously

  1153. gives man

  1154. access

1155. to all of the trees

  1156. except one

  1157. in this paradise

  1158. God's not withholding

  1159. he's generous

  1160. in both stories

  1161. of creation

  1162. we see that God

  1163. is gracious

  1164. God could have

  1165. created man

  1166. as a robot

  1167. who had no choice

  1168. but to obey

  1169. but God

  1170. graciously

  1171. gives us

  1172. the freedom

  1173. to choose

  1174. to worship him

  1175. or not

  1176. God graciously

  1177. teaches man

  1178. how to live

  1179. properly

  1180. within that freedom

  1181. and gives him

  1182. structure

  1183. and guidelines

  1184. and rules

  1185. to help protect him

  1186. God provides

  1187. for his people

  1188. God is generous

  1189. with his people

  1190. God is gracious

  1191. with his people

  1192. he doesn't desire

  1193. to see us

  1194. suffer and die

  1195. he establishes us

  1196. with the ability

  1197. to know him

  1198. to know him

  1199. as creator

  1200. and lord

1201. the one who's in charge

  1202. and to know him

  1203. as father

  1204. and friend

  1205. the one

  1206. who cares

  1207. for us

  1208. and Adam

  1209. and Eve

  1210. have a responsibility

  1211. to respond

  1212. properly

  1213. to God's creation

  1214. and just like them

  1215. we have a responsibility

  1216. to respond properly

  1217. to God's creation

1218. and I want to focus

  1219. today on three

  1220. primary ways

  1221. that we're supposed

  1222. to respond

  1223. to the fact

  1224. that God

  1225. has created

  1226. the world

  1227. and everything

  1228. in it

  1229. and us

  1230. the first proper

  1231. response

  1232. is worship

  1233. God is big

  1234. no one else

  1235. can create

  1236. as he did

  1237. no one else

  1238. can sustain

  1239. as he did

  1240. or as he does

  1241. God has created

  1242. everything

  1243. God deserves

  1244. our worship

  1245. I'm not just

  1246. talking about

  1247. singing songs

1248. at the end of church

  1249. when I say worship

  1250. I'm talking about

  1251. a life

  1252. that reflects

  1253. his bigness

  1254. and greatness

  1255. and who he is

  1256. to the people

  1257. around us

  1258. you know

  1259. I think

  1260. one of the

  1261. key ways

  1262. that we worship

  1263. God

  1264. is by getting

  1265. to know him

  1266. more

  1267. and a great way

  1268. to do that

  1269. is by reading

  1270. our Bibles

  1271. because the Bible

  1272. is where we learn

  1273. about who God is

  1274. like I said

1275. at the start of church

  1276. Chris has a Bible

  1277. reading plan

  1278. available for us

  1279. that if you want

  1280. to spend more time

  1281. in your Bible

  1282. getting to know

  1283. who God is

  1284. getting to know

  1285. about how big

  1286. and amazing he is

  1287. and how amazing

1288. it is that he loves

1289. us and cares about us

  1290. I encourage you

  1291. to pick that up

  1292. from him after service

  1293. another great way

  1294. to get to know

  1295. more clearly

  1296. who God is

  1297. is by spending time

  1298. with other Christians

  1299. and hearing

  1300. about

  1301. what they've experienced

  1302. of God

  1303. in their lives

  1304. and a great way

  1305. to do that

  1306. is in community groups

  1307. so again

  1308. I encourage you

  1309. if you're not involved

  1310. in the community group

  1311. get plugged into one

  1312. the second proper response

  1313. to God's creation

  1314. is trust

  1315. we see in

  1316. the story of creation

  1317. that God is big

  1318. that God is powerful

1319. that God sees his work

  1320. through to completion

1321. we see at the end

  1322. of creation

  1323. the seventh day comes

  1324. and God rests

  1325. from his work

  1326. because the work

  1327. is complete

  1328. God sees the task

  1329. through to completion

  1330. and then he rests

  1331. and enjoys the work

  1332. that he has done

1333. and the fact that God

  1334. is big and powerful

1335. enough to see his work

  1336. through to completion

1337. and the fact that God

  1338. is faithful

  1339. to see his work

  1340. through to completion

  1341. is a fact that

1342. it's just as true today

  1343. as it was

1344. at the time of creation

  1345. in Philippians chapter 1

    Philippians 1:6

  1346. verse 6

  1347. Paul tells us

  1348. I'm sure of this

  1349. he who began

1350. a good work in you

1351. will bring it to completion

1352. at the day of Christ Jesus

  1353. God's ability and power

  1354. to see his work

  1355. through to completion

  1356. and his faithfulness

  1357. to see his work

  1358. through to completion

  1359. apply just as much

  1360. on an individual level

  1361. in our lives

  1362. as they do

  1363. on a cosmic level

  1364. in creation

1365. the God who is at work

  1366. in our lives today

  1367. who will see

  1368. the completion

  1369. of our transformation

  1370. into his image

  1371. through to the end

  1372. is the same God

  1373. who saw creation

  1374. through to the end

  1375. he's just as powerful

1376. he's just as amazing today

  1377. as he was then

1378. and he's just as faithful

  1379. to see his work

  1380. through to completion

1381. so when we see God

  1382. working in our lives

  1383. and we wonder

1384. is he ever going to

  1385. make it all work

1386. is he ever going to

  1387. shape me into

1388. who he really wants me to be

1389. we can trust that he will

1390. because he's the same God

  1391. now working in us

  1392. to change us

  1393. and save us

  1394. as he was

  1395. in creation

  1396. and the third

  1397. proper response

  1398. to God's creation

  1399. is obedience

  1400. in creation

  1401. God establishes

  1402. his rule

  1403. by his word

  1404. this is not

  1405. a mean word

1406. this is not a bad word

  1407. this is a loving

  1408. and kind

  1409. and generous

  1410. and good word

  1411. it's instruction

  1412. on how to live

  1413. the best

  1414. most full

  1415. possible life

  1416. on earth

  1417. as humanity

  1418. and despite

  1419. the goodness

  1420. of God's command

  1421. Adam and Eve

  1422. decide they want more

  1423. than what God's already

  1424. given them

  1425. and they disobey him

  1426. and despite the goodness

  1427. of God's commands

  1428. to us

  1429. in our life

  1430. we continuously

  1431. decide

  1432. we want more

1433. than what he's given us

  1434. and disobey him

  1435. and in creation

  1436. we see

1437. that God is in charge

  1438. so we owe him

  1439. our obedience

  1440. in creation

  1441. we see that God

  1442. is good

1443. and so it's in our

  1444. best interest

  1445. to obey him

  1446. because he wants

  1447. what's best for us

  1448. in creation

  1449. we see

  1450. that God is loving

  1451. and therefore

  1452. we should obey him

  1453. because it's a response

  1454. to that love

  1455. and yet we all

  1456. choose every day

  1457. not to do that

  1458. we choose

  1459. to get angry

  1460. at others

  1461. because they've

  1462. insulted us

  1463. we choose

  1464. to bend God's rules

  1465. a little here

  1466. break them there

  1467. but creation

  1468. tells us

  1469. that we owe him

  1470. our obedience

  1471. and the good news

  1472. is that God's love

  1473. God's generosity

  1474. and graciousness

  1475. don't disappear

  1476. when we disobey

  1477. he's still loving

  1478. he's still generous

  1479. he's still gracious

1480. and as we get further

  1481. into the story

  1482. what we'll see

  1483. is that God

  1484. loves us

  1485. that God wants us

  1486. to be his people

  1487. God wants us

  1488. to be in relationship

  1489. with him

  1490. and that even

  1491. when we disobey

  1492. and rebel

  1493. he is so

  1494. so strongly

  1495. wants us

  1496. in this relationship

  1497. with him

  1498. that he's willing

  1499. to forgive us

  1500. at great cost

  1501. to himself

  1502. if you don't know

1503. the rest of the story

  1504. and you don't want

  1505. to wait 11 weeks

  1506. to find out

  1507. where it goes

  1508. or how it ends

  1509. I'd love to talk

  1510. to you more

  1511. about it

  1512. after service

  1513. but for now

  1514. we're out of time

  1515. so we're gonna pray

  1516. and let us remember

  1517. God's love

  1518. in creation

  1519. God's love

  1520. for us

  1521. God's love

  1522. for the world

  1523. that he created

  1524. and our proper

  1525. response

  1526. of worship

  1527. and trust

  1528. and obedience

  1529. let's pray

  1530. Father we thank you

  1531. for the fact

  1532. that you are big

  1533. and strong

  1534. and loving

  1535. and despite

  1536. your bigness

  1537. you still care

  1538. about us

  1539. as individuals

  1540. that you bring

  1541. order out of chaos

  1542. that you bring

  1543. light out of darkness

  1544. that at your word

  1545. creation responds

  1546. God we pray

  1547. that we would respond

  1548. properly this week

  1549. as well

  1550. that we would live

  1551. lives of worship

  1552. we would live

  1553. lives of trust

  1554. that through

  1555. our response

  1556. to your work

  1557. of creation

  1558. others would be able

  1559. to see how big

  1560. and great you are

1561. I pray that this week

  1562. that we would be

  1563. obedient to your word

  1564. even when it's hard

  1565. even when it doesn't

  1566. seem like the best

  1567. path forward

  1568. we would trust you

  1569. enough to obey

  1570. what you say

  1571. and believe

  1572. that it is right

  1573. God we love you

  1574. we thank you

  1575. for you being

  1576. who you are

  1577. and in Jesus name

  1578. Amen
