  1. Now, can you turn in your Bibles to the book of Galatians, chapter 2? I'm going to read from verse 11 to 21.

    Galatians 2 chapter mention

  2. We're looking at this letter as a church, seeing how Paul time and again says to his readers,

  3. there is no other gospel other than the gospel of grace.

  4. And here in this section, he speaks to Peter and he speaks to us saying, keep in line with the gospel.

  5. So Galatians 2 and at verse 11.

  6. Barnabas was led astray.

  7. When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all,

  8. you're a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew.

  9. How is it then that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

  10. We who are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners know that a man is not justified by observing the law,

  11. but by faith in Jesus Christ.

  12. So we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law.

  13. Because by observing the law, no one will be justified.

  14. If, while we seek to be justified in Christ, it becomes evident that we ourselves are sinners,

  15. does that mean that Christ promotes sin?

  16. Absolutely not.

  17. If I rebuild what I destroyed, I prove that I am a lawbreaker.

  18. For through the law, I died to the law so that I might live for God.

  19. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

  20. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.

  21. I do not set aside the grace of God.

  22. For if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing.

  23. Amen.

  24. So keeping in line with the gospel or keeping our gospel balance,

  25. that's what we're thinking about this morning.

  26. I don't know whether you are one of those people that finds balance naturally an easy or a hard thing.

  27. Having taught two boys to ride bikes, I developed something of a mantra as they were getting started to help them with their balance.

  28. Tell them to get their eyes up and look straight ahead as quickly as possible.

  29. Because that was key for balance rather than veering off one way or the other.

  30. And it was really important for safety.

  31. Because when you're on narrow paths and you've got cars on one side and you've got people and you've got bins

  32. and you've got holly bushes on the other side, you really want to be able to go on that straight path.

  33. Balance is important.

  34. Following the right path is safety.

  35. And that brings us to what Paul is talking about to Peter and to the others gathered.

  36. In verse 14, he confronts Peter and says,

  37. you're not acting in line with the truth of the gospel.

  38. So his idea is the gospel is a straight path to walk on, but it's possible even for Christians to veer off that.

  39. The word that Paul uses is the word ortho, which we recognize from orthopedics,

  40. where people align our skeletal system or an orthodontist, where people straighten teeth.

  41. Galatians is a book all about laying out the straight path of the gospel.

  42. So let's just remind ourselves what we have discovered about that so far.

  43. We've discovered that it's good news.

  44. And it's good news that comes from Paul directly from Jesus.

  45. So when he brings the gospel of grace, it comes from Jesus.

  46. He tells us that in chapter 1.

  47. Part of that good news invites us to reflect honestly on ourselves.

  48. So Paul will say that we are sinners, that we are lost and we are unable to rescue ourselves.

  49. That before a holy God, we stand guilty and condemned before him.

  50. Which sounds like bad news, except for the fact that God has made it possible for us to be accepted,

  51. despite all of our sin, because of his great grace and goodness towards us.

  52. That Paul says because of Jesus' death on the cross, because he's come to live perfectly when we couldn't,

  53. and because he's come to die as the perfect sacrifice in our place for our sins,

  54. it is possible for us to be accepted by God.

  55. Not because of our merit, not because of our law-keeping, not because of our religious performance,

  56. purely because of God's grace in Jesus.

  57. So that's the straight path of the gospel.

  58. But this passage shows us there's two ways that we can veer off that.

  59. The first is Peter's error, where we see him implying the need for extra laws in order to be accepted by God,

  60. sometimes known as legalism.

  61. You need to do certain things in order for God to accept you.

  62. Or the accusation from verse 17 onwards of Paul's opponents,

  63. that preaching the gospel of grace will lead to lawlessness.

  64. So there's this other way to get off the gospel.

  65. It's like, Jesus saved me so I can do whatever I want.

  66. That's the mindset that some people had when they heard Paul's teaching.

  67. And the answer to both of these mistakes is the gospel of grace.

  68. It's the straight path that stops us from falling into either of these ditches.

  69. So Paul is going to speak to Peter about stuff that he knows.

  70. He's going to remind him about gospel balance.

  71. So I want to just draw three different things that Paul invites us to remember.

  72. Firstly, remember that hypocrisy is horrible.

  73. And when we think about the confrontation that happens in verse 11 to 14,

  74. we see the danger of hypocrisy.

  75. Quick recap, because some of us weren't here last week.

  76. In Galatians chapter 2, verses 1 to 10, we've got a meeting that happens in Jerusalem.

    Galatians 2:1–10

  77. Paul and Barnabas and Titus go and they meet Peter and James and John,

  78. the pillars of the church, and they come to agreement on what is the gospel.

  79. So they shake hands on this reality that you're accepted by God

  80. through putting your faith in the Lord Jesus alone.

  81. You don't need anything else.

  82. Gentile people don't need to become Jewish.

  83. So they agree to that.

  84. And one of the implications of that is that then it's possible to enjoy sharing meal,

  85. having fellowship, sitting down at a table with any other believer,

  86. regardless of their background.

  87. So they have shaken hands on that.

  88. But now Peter and his friends have returned to Antioch.

  89. Paul and his friends have returned to Antioch.

  90. Peter comes to visit, and now there's confrontation.

  91. Let's see why, verse 11, let's see why Paul has to oppose Peter to his faith.

  92. In verse 12, we read, before certain men came from James,

  93. Peter used to eat with the Gentiles.

  94. Okay, so that was the situation.

  95. He understood the gospel gives me this freedom to say,

  96. we're all one in Christ Jesus.

  97. It doesn't matter what your background is, so they're having meals together.

  98. But then, when people came from James, from Jerusalem,

  99. he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles.

  100. So now this other group comes, and he begins to feel pressure.

  101. What will they think of me?

  102. What will they think of me sitting down to eat with these people in this way?

  103. So he draws back.

  104. So now you've got a situation where it's Jews over here and it's Gentiles over here.

  105. And we're told why he does that.

  106. End of verse 12, he does it because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group.

  107. So we've met these guys before.

  108. They're religious leaders, sometimes known as Judaizers.

  109. They've got this slogan, unless a person is circumcised and keeps the ceremonial laws of Moses,

  110. they cannot be saved.

  111. Peter's had trouble and hassle from these guys before,

  112. and so he pulls back to avoid having that confrontation again.

  113. But the impact of that is serious.

  114. Verse 13,

  115. The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy,

  116. so that by their hypocrisy, even Barnabas was led astray.

  117. So the problem here is hypocrisy.

  118. We talk about a failure to practice what we preach,

  119. and in a sense, that's what's happening with Peter.

  120. The word is drawn from the theater.

  121. When an actor would put on a mask in order to play another character,

  122. to hide his own identity in order to play a part,

  123. that was known as hypocrisy.

  124. Being two-faced.

  125. What's happening here,

  126. the reason why Paul confronts Peter is that Peter is masking his Christian convictions.

  127. He is masking his true identity as a follower in Jesus.

  128. He's playing the part of an unbeliever in the gospel.

  129. The gospel says we're all one in Christ,

  130. but Peter, by his actions, is saying,

  131. well, actually, no, we're not,

  132. unless you start to keep our Jewish laws.

  133. And because of fear of others,

  134. because of people-pleasing,

  135. there is this massive impact.

  136. So the other Jews in Antioch,

  137. they're led to follow Peter,

  138. and even Barnabas,

  139. the leader of the church in Antioch,

  140. is led astray.

  141. So here is a warning to us.

  142. Hypocrisy spreads like a virus.

  143. And so we need to be aware of the influence that we have on others.

  144. As parents, for example,

  145. we need to be aware of the influence that we have on our children,

  146. our children who see the true us.

  147. Do our thoughts, do our words, do our actions,

  148. do they convey the gospel of love and grace,

  149. or do they convey something else?

  150. We need to be aware of the influence that we can have on our family and our friends,

  151. because that can be a positive,

  152. but as in Peter's case, it can become a huge negative.

  153. As Christians, we're encouraged not to mask who we are

  154. and what we believe as the people of God,

  155. to not try and lead some kind of a double life.

  156. I remember one of the first jobs I had after graduating.

  157. I was working in a call center,

  158. a fairly large team,

  159. and one of the members of that team,

  160. his language was appalling,

  161. but worse than that,

  162. he would often make really crude and really racist jokes.

  163. I was new,

  164. and I was young,

  165. and I didn't know how to handle that.

  166. I didn't know how to have that conversation,

  167. and so what did I do?

  168. I masked my convictions.

  169. I was guilty of hypocrisy,

  170. failing to live out what I believe.

  171. And we can all find ourselves tempted to do that,

  172. can't we?

  173. If we're here and we're new students,

  174. one of the best advice that I could give if you're a Christian

  175. is get that out there.

  176. Get the fact that you're a Christian out there.

  177. Don't try and hide it,

  178. because it only becomes more difficult

  179. to maintain a consistent witness

  180. if you're pretending,

  181. trying to lead some kind of double life.

  182. So what we see from Peter's example

  183. is that hypocrisy is horrible.

  184. It's dangerous.

  185. And Paul responds,

  186. a public scandal is being created.

  187. So verse 14,

  188. Paul confronts Peter publicly.

  189. When I saw that they were not acting in line

  190. with the truth of the gospel,

  191. I said to Peter,

  192. in front of them all,

  193. this is a public thing,

  194. and notice he says to Peter,

  195. look, you're out of line,

  196. not because you're being rude and unwelcoming

  197. and perhaps racist,

  198. which he is by his actions.

  199. He's saying you're out of line with the gospel.

  200. Because whereas faith in Jesus

  201. should be the basis of church unity,

  202. Peter is implying that it's faith in Jesus

  203. and faith in these religious ceremonies

  204. that's the basis for church unity

  205. because that's the way to be accepted.

  206. So he's going into legalism

  207. and he's leading people astray.

  208. And so Paul is going to call him back

  209. to the gospel

  210. because the key to balance, of course,

  211. as we're looking up

  212. and as we're looking ahead,

  213. if we don't want to veer off,

  214. we need to be looking straight ahead

  215. and we need to be looking to Jesus.

  216. Not looking at the opponents

  217. who might make us quake in fear

  218. to keep looking to Jesus.

  219. And as we remember the gospel,

  220. we remember that we're accepted by Jesus

  221. while we were his enemies.

  222. When we think about divisions

  223. that exist in society,

  224. Jew, Gentile,

  225. nothing was bigger than the division

  226. between a holy God and us as sinners.

  227. But yet God was reconciled to us

  228. through the sending of Jesus,

  229. through his sacrifice.

  230. So we've been accepted by Jesus

  231. while we were still enemies.

  232. Therefore, we can and we should

  233. welcome anyone in Christ

  234. who has faith in Christ.

  235. We shouldn't add extra barriers

  236. as Peter was doing.

  237. And in response to the fear

  238. that he feels

  239. and sometimes that we feel also,

  240. there's that reminder

  241. that in Christ Jesus,

  242. we have the acceptance

  243. and the approval of God.

  244. And as we reflect on that

  245. and as we think,

  246. well, what approval could possibly matter

  247. more to us than that,

  248. there's how we'll be able to stick

  249. to the reality that we're saved by grace

  250. and by grace alone.

  251. So that's the first thing to remember,

  252. that hypocrisy is a horrible thing.

  253. Second thing to remember

  254. from verse 15 and 16

  255. is that we are justified in Jesus.

  256. Let me read verse 15,

  257. the beginning of verse 16 again.

  258. We who are Jews by birth

  259. and not Gentile sinners,

  260. notice that's inverted commas,

  261. that's the way Jewish people

  262. would talk about Gentiles,

  263. very derogatory way of talking,

  264. know that a man is not justified

  265. by observing the law,

  266. but by faith in Jesus Christ.

  267. So here is our first mention

  268. in this letter of the word justified

  269. and the idea of justification.

  270. And again, take us back

  271. to Martin Luther,

  272. the great reformer.

  273. He says that if the article

  274. of justification be once lost,

  275. then is all true Christian doctrine lost?

  276. This is a big deal idea.

  277. So let's walk closely

  278. and carefully and slowly

  279. through this idea

  280. and to see what is justification

  281. and also to see what does it have to do

  282. with walking in line with the gospel.

  283. So first of all,

  284. what is justification?

  285. Well, J.I. Packer,

  286. the Bible scholar,

  287. is very helpful in this.

  288. He says it's a legal term.

  289. So it's drawn from the courtroom

  290. and it's the idea of a judge

  291. who declares of a man on trial

  292. that he's not liable

  293. to the penalty of the law,

  294. but rather is entitled

  295. to all the privileges

  296. due to those who have kept the law

  297. as he receives the verdict

  298. that is the opposite

  299. of being condemned,

  300. being acquitted,

  301. being declared to be not guilty.

  302. So Paul is taking us

  303. into God's courtroom

  304. and Paul will say,

  305. Peter, remember.

  306. Remember that you and me,

  307. remember that everyone

  308. were justified by faith

  309. in Jesus alone.

  310. And because of that,

  311. let that shape how you live,

  312. let that shape how you treat

  313. other people.

  314. Just to take a step back,

  315. if we were to ask the question

  316. of people,

  317. what's the biggest problem

  318. that we face as human beings?

  319. Perhaps our answer in here

  320. might be different

  321. to the answer

  322. that we would find on the streets.

  323. Many people would answer

  324. terrorism,

  325. Brexit,

  326. and economic fear,

  327. disease,

  328. injustice,

  329. pollution,

  330. those kind of things,

  331. which are obviously

  332. significant issues

  333. troubling us today.

  334. But biblically,

  335. the big problem,

  336. the big question

  337. that we all need

  338. to find an answer to is,

  339. how can I be right with God?

  340. And even more pointed

  341. than that,

  342. how can I,

  343. as a sinful person,

  344. be right with a holy God?

  345. When Jesus was on the earth

  346. and he was teaching,

  347. he reaffirmed the two

  348. great commandments

  349. that we find in the Old Testament,

  350. summaries of the Ten Commandments.

  351. So Jesus said,

  352. the great commandment

  353. is to love God

  354. with all your heart

  355. and soul

  356. and mind and strength.

  357. And the other great commandment

  358. is like it,

  359. love your neighbor

  360. as yourself.

  361. So with all of our heart

  362. and all our desire,

  363. with all of our mind,

  364. all of our motivation,

  365. with all of our actions,

  366. we are to express love to God

  367. and love to others.

  368. Not just sometimes,

  369. but always.

  370. Not just to some people,

  371. but to all people.

  372. And when we start

  373. to reflect on that,

  374. when we start to allow

  375. our conscience to kick in,

  376. I'm sure, like me,

  377. you recognize

  378. that we stand guilty

  379. of breaking those two commands.

  380. And so there is for us,

  381. therefore,

  382. a serious problem.

  383. We've got a God

  384. who is perfectly holy,

  385. a God who hates sin,

  386. a God who calls us

  387. to this perfect standard

  388. of perfect love,

  389. and a God who is

  390. the judge of us all,

  391. and then there's us

  392. who have broken

  393. his perfect law.

  394. So one of the things

  395. that justification

  396. reminds us of,

  397. and it's really important,

  398. I think,

  399. to be reminded of this,

  400. it reminds us

  401. that we will all be

  402. in God's courtroom one day.

  403. For some of us,

  404. we may feel like

  405. that's years and years

  406. into the future,

  407. but one day,

  408. we will all stand

  409. in the dock before God

  410. to give an account

  411. for our lives.

  412. And so the question for us

  413. is on that day,

  414. how can we hear

  415. a verdict of not guilty,

  416. given what we know

  417. about God,

  418. given what we know

  419. about ourselves?

  420. How can we escape

  421. the guilty verdict?

  422. How can the breach

  423. in the relationship

  424. be fixed?

  425. And what we discover

  426. in this passage,

  427. and what we discover

  428. as we listen to

  429. all the voices around us,

  430. that there's really

  431. two alternatives

  432. that are suggested.

  433. How can I be accepted

  434. by God?

  435. Well, it's either

  436. by our work

  437. or by faith in Jesus

  438. and His finished work.

  439. There really are

  440. no other alternatives

  441. suggested.

  442. And Paul uses

  443. three different ways

  444. to drive us

  445. to the reality

  446. that we are justified

  447. by faith in Jesus alone.

  448. There is no other way.

  449. So he begins

  450. with that general observation

  451. that we read

  452. in verses 15

  453. and into verse 16.

  454. So this is something

  455. that Jews had discovered.

  456. Jews,

  457. with all the privileges

  458. of God's law

  459. and God's promises,

  460. being God's people,

  461. living in God's place,

  462. Paul can say,

  463. as a Jew,

  464. I know

  465. that the only way

  466. anyone

  467. can be right with God

  468. is through trusting

  469. in Jesus,

  470. not by trying

  471. to keep the law.

  472. The law

  473. is there

  474. to remind us

  475. God is holy

  476. and we are not.

  477. The law is there

  478. to remind us

  479. that we need

  480. a Savior.

  481. So we've got

  482. that general observation,

  483. but remember

  484. he's speaking

  485. to Peter here

  486. and he makes it personal.

  487. In the second part

  488. of verse 16,

  489. he says to Peter,

  490. so we too

  491. have put our faith

  492. in Christ Jesus

  493. that we may be justified

  494. by faith in Christ

  495. and not by observing

  496. the law.

  497. So he turns to Peter,

  498. you and me,

  499. Peter,

  500. this is true for us.

  501. We didn't put

  502. our faith in Jesus

  503. so we could have

  504. a spiritual top-up,

  505. so we're kind of

  506. trusting in Jesus

  507. but kind of trusting

  508. in the law.

  509. We trust it in order

  510. that we would be justified.

  511. Peter,

  512. you know as well

  513. as I do,

  514. the only way

  515. that anyone

  516. can be saved

  517. is through trusting

  518. in Jesus.

  519. And then to drive

  520. it home further,

  521. he reminds Peter

  522. that this is what

  523. was taught

  524. in the Old Testament.

  525. So the last part

  526. of verse 16

  527. is a reference

  528. to Psalm 143

  529. in verse 2

  530. which we sang earlier

  531. because by observing

  532. the law

  533. no one

  534. will be

  535. justified.

  536. One point made

  537. three ways.

  538. We can never

  539. ever by ourselves

  540. be good enough

  541. for God

  542. to declare us

  543. not guilty.

  544. So Peter

  545. is damaging

  546. the message

  547. of the gospel

  548. by implying

  549. that people

  550. need Jesus

  551. plus

  552. ceremonial law

  553. in order

  554. to be saved.

  555. We do damage

  556. the gospel

  557. whenever we suggest

  558. that we need

  559. anything other

  560. than faith

  561. and trust

  562. in the Lord

  563. Jesus

  564. to be saved.

  565. To be justified,

  566. to be declared

  567. innocent,

  568. we need

  569. Jesus.

  570. We need

  571. the great

  572. exchange

  573. that happens

  574. at the cross.

  575. What is it

  576. that happens

  577. at the cross?

  578. We have Jesus

  579. the one who comes

  580. as our representative,

  581. the one who

  582. lives in perfect

  583. obedience

  584. to the extent

  585. that he obediently

  586. goes to the cross

  587. to be

  588. the sacrifice

  589. and the savior

  590. that God

  591. had promised.

  592. So there

  593. on the cross

  594. the law

  595. keeper

  596. dies

  597. for law

  598. breakers.

  599. And what happens

  600. is that

  601. God,

  602. when we put

  603. our faith

  604. in Jesus,

  605. God declares

  606. us to be

  607. righteous

  608. because the

  609. righteousness

  610. of Jesus Christ

  611. is credited

  612. to our account

  613. just as

  614. Jesus takes

  615. our guilt

  616. and sin

  617. and dies

  618. for it

  619. on the cross.

  620. So he

  621. gifts

  622. us

  623. his record

  624. of righteousness

  625. so that we

  626. can be declared

  627. by God

  628. justified.

  629. And there's

  630. wonderful assurance

  631. for our faith

  632. in this.

  633. As John Murray,

  634. the Scottish

  635. theologian,

  636. puts it,

  637. God must

  638. accept

  639. into his

  640. favor

  641. those who

  642. are invested

  643. with the

  644. righteousness

  645. of his

  646. own son.

  647. Let's use

  648. an analogy

  649. of a

  650. bank account.

  651. So imagine

  652. that you

  653. are somebody

  654. who is in

  655. a huge

  656. amount of

  657. debt.

  658. Monday

  659. morning

  660. rolls in,

  661. you wake

  662. up,

  663. terrified,

  664. how am I

  665. going to

  666. pay off

  667. all these

  668. bills?

  669. Posty

  670. delivers

  671. some letters,

  672. got some

  673. more credit

  674. card debt

  675. that's

  676. mounting up,

  677. you got

  678. payday loans

  679. that you need

  680. to pay back,

  681. you've got a

  682. letter from

  683. the bailiff

  684. saying that

  685. he's coming

  686. to take

  687. your possessions

  688. unless you

  689. can pay

  690. and you

  691. have nothing

  692. so you

  693. are about

  694. to lose

  695. everything.

  696. So you're

  697. in that

  698. position of

  699. guilt and fear

  700. and anxiety,

  701. you get no

  702. idea where

  703. to turn,

  704. you get no

  705. hope and

  706. then you get

  707. a message,

  708. a phone call

  709. from your

  710. bank manager

  711. to say that

  712. somebody has

  713. come into

  714. the branch

  715. and he's

  716. paid off

  717. all those

  718. payday loans

  719. and he's

  720. paid off

  721. all the

  722. credit card

  723. debt and

  724. he's satisfied

  725. the demands

  726. of the bailiffs

  727. and so you

  728. have no more

  729. debt and not

  730. only that,

  731. he's placed

  732. a vast

  733. fortune into

  734. your account.

  735. Now that

  736. is what

  737. God has

  738. done for

  739. us in

  740. the gospel

  741. of grace.

  742. Jesus has

  743. cancelled

  744. the debt

  745. of our

  746. sin and

  747. he's given

  748. us his

  749. perfect

  750. righteousness.

  751. That's the

  752. only way

  753. that we

  754. can ever

  755. possibly be

  756. declared not

  757. guilty before

  758. a holy

  759. God.

  760. So to

  761. keep our

  762. gospel

  763. balanced,

  764. to stop

  765. veering off

  766. into legalism

  767. where we

  768. think we

  769. need to add

  770. to our

  771. salvation or

  772. we need to

  773. contribute in

  774. any way,

  775. we need to

  776. remember this

  777. truth, that

  778. we are justified

  779. in Jesus

  780. and Jesus

  781. alone.

  782. If we're not

  783. a Christian,

  784. here is truth

  785. for us to

  786. receive, that

  787. bearing in mind

  788. that one day

  789. we'll all stand

  790. before God in

  791. the dock, let

  792. Jesus be a

  793. representative.

  794. Let him be

  795. the one whose

  796. record you

  797. place your

  798. hope in rather

  799. than your own

  800. because he is

  801. willing to

  802. save you and

  803. to credit his

  804. righteousness to

  805. your account so

  806. you can be in

  807. the family of

  808. God.

  809. And for us as

  810. Christians, let's

  811. represent this

  812. unlike Peter who

  813. falls off into

  814. legalism and

  815. pulls the church

  816. astray.

  817. Let's avoid

  818. things like being

  819. judgmental or

  820. being full of

  821. pride or maybe

  822. making our

  823. salvation really

  824. centered on

  825. ourselves so if

  826. we're having a

  827. good day we

  828. feel really good

  829. and think that

  830. God's bound to

  831. be pleased with

  832. us whereas if

  833. things go badly

  834. we start to

  835. have all kinds

  836. of doubts and

  837. fears because

  838. we've made it

  839. more about us

  840. rather than we

  841. have about

  842. trusting in what

  843. Jesus has done

  844. for us.

  845. So remember that

  846. we are justified

  847. in Jesus.

  848. The third thing

  849. to remember from

  850. Paul's confrontation

  851. with Peter is

  852. remember that the

  853. cross is central.

  854. Now verse 17

  855. is a complex one

  856. I think it's hard

  857. to exactly see

  858. what's going on

  859. but let's read it.

  860. If while we seek

  861. to be justified

  862. in Christ it

  863. becomes evident

  864. that we ourselves

  865. are sinners

  866. does that mean

  867. that Christ

  868. promotes sin?

  869. Absolutely not.

  870. Now this seems

  871. to come from

  872. an accusation

  873. and Paul is

  874. getting lots of

  875. accusations from

  876. the other false

  877. teachers and it

  878. seems to be the

  879. accusation that

  880. that the faith

  881. in Christ alone

  882. for God's acceptance

  883. is a dangerous

  884. thing to teach

  885. because they

  886. imagine that it

  887. will encourage

  888. people to then

  889. abandon God's law.

  890. People will get

  891. the idea oh great

  892. I just need to

  893. trust in Jesus

  894. and then I can do

  895. whatever I want

  896. and I'll be

  897. absolutely saved.

  898. And so people

  899. are saying Paul

  900. that's what your

  901. gospel is going

  902. to lead people to

  903. and Paul responds

  904. at the end of

  905. verse 17

  906. absolutely not

  907. God forbid.

  908. And the big point

  909. of verses 17

  910. to 21 is that

  911. the gospel of

  912. grace does not

  913. lead us towards

  914. lawlessness because

  915. as he makes clear

  916. in the gospel we

  917. are united to

  918. Jesus Christ.

  919. That we have been

  920. crucified with Christ

  921. we are made new

  922. creations in Christ

  923. Christ lives in

  924. us and because of

  925. that we have new

  926. power new desire

  927. for holiness

  928. we've got this new

  929. identity

  930. we've got a new

  931. motivation for

  932. obeying the law

  933. not out of fear

  934. but out of gratitude

  935. because of what

  936. Jesus has done

  937. for us.

  938. So the gospel of

  939. grace does not

  940. lead to lawlessness

  941. because it connects

  942. us to the perfectly

  943. holy and obedient

  944. one.

  945. And Paul uses

  946. dying and rising

  947. language to make

  948. that point and to

  949. show that the

  950. transformation that

  951. happens in the

  952. gospel.

  953. So in verse 19

  954. for example he

  955. says,

  956. For through the

  957. law I died to

  958. the law so that I

  959. might live for

  960. God.

  961. What does he mean

  962. there?

  963. He means that he

  964. died to the law as

  965. the way to be right

  966. with God.

  967. He died to trying to

  968. use the law to earn

  969. his way to God.

  970. And in actual fact

  971. the Old Testament

  972. law was what

  973. showed him that

  974. that was pointless

  975. and wrong.

  976. That he could never

  977. meet the standards

  978. of a perfectly

  979. holy God.

  980. So that now he's

  981. trusting in Jesus

  982. he can live by

  983. faith.

  984. Trusting in the

  985. death of Jesus

  986. as his source of

  987. salvation.

  988. Not trying to

  989. trust in himself

  990. and his own

  991. ability to perform.

  992. And that brings

  993. all the difference

  994. in the world.

  995. Verse 20.

  996. I have been

  997. crucified with

  998. Christ and I

  999. no longer live

  1000. but Christ lives

  1001. in me.

  1002. So when a person

  1003. becomes a Christian

  1004. when by the Spirit

  1005. Jesus comes to

  1006. dwell in us

  1007. the perfect one

  1008. comes to dwell in

  1009. us.

  1010. The holy one

  1011. comes to dwell in

  1012. us.

  1013. Therefore there is

  1014. a new ability

  1015. and a new desire

  1016. for holiness.

  1017. A true Christian

  1018. is never going to

  1019. say I have no

  1020. interest in obeying

  1021. God.

  1022. Jesus said many

  1023. times you will

  1024. show love by

  1025. obeying.

  1026. And then he goes

  1027. on to say the

  1028. life I live in

  1029. the body I live

  1030. by faith in the

  1031. Son of God who

  1032. loved me and gave

  1033. himself for me.

  1034. Not trusting my

  1035. work Paul says

  1036. trusting in his

  1037. finished work.

  1038. Living in

  1039. obedience out of

  1040. gratitude for the

  1041. costly salvation.

  1042. salvation that he

  1043. has received.

  1044. And as he ends

  1045. his confrontation

  1046. verse 21 he

  1047. reminds Peter once

  1048. again that it's

  1049. all down to

  1050. grace.

  1051. He says I do

  1052. not set aside the

  1053. grace of God

  1054. for if righteousness

  1055. could be gained

  1056. through the law

  1057. Christ died for

  1058. nothing.

  1059. Peter remember

  1060. that.

  1061. Church remember

  1062. that.

  1063. if there was any

  1064. other way to be

  1065. saved why would

  1066. God have sent his

  1067. son Jesus to die?

  1068. That just makes

  1069. Jesus' death a

  1070. pointless tragic

1071. waste if we by our

  1072. own steam can find

  1073. our way into God's

  1074. acceptance.

  1075. sins.

1076. We can think about it

  1077. like this.

  1078. Now imagine a man

  1079. who comes home one

  1080. evening and he turns

  1081. the corner of his

  1082. street and he sees

1083. his house is up in

  1084. flames and he begins

  1085. to run towards the

  1086. house and he hears

  1087. the sirens but they're

  1088. in the distance.

  1089. They're still going to

1090. be a wee while and he

  1091. charges into the house

1092. and he gets his wife

1093. and his children out of

  1094. the house.

  1095. So they're safely on

1096. the street and then the

  1097. fire engine arrives, the

1098. fire crew come out and

  1099. the first fireman rushes

  1100. into the blaze and

  1101. perishes.

1102. Now if we were to hear

1103. that kind of story we'd

  1104. say that's a pointless

  1105. waste.

1106. He didn't need to go and

  1107. risk everything because

  1108. everybody was safe.

1109. But when we think about

  1110. another story, same man

  1111. coming home from work,

1112. turns the corner of his

  1113. street, house is ablaze,

1114. he runs to his front door

1115. and he can't get in the

  1116. front door because of

1117. the flames and he sees

1118. his wife and children on

1119. the second floor and he

  1120. can't reach them.

1121. Then he hears the sirens,

1122. then the fire crew come

  1123. with their ladders and

1124. then a fireman risks his

1125. life and gives his life in

  1126. order to rescue.

  1127. Changes everything,

  1128. doesn't it?

1129. Now the man has seen what

1130. true love is, seen true

  1131. rescue.

1132. And Paul says to Peter and

1133. says to us, remember, Jesus

1134. came on a real rescue to

1135. rescue us in our need, in our

1136. helplessness when we could not

  1137. save ourselves.

1138. He gave himself to death to

1139. rescue us and all because of

1140. his love and his grace.

1141. And it's as we remember that,

1142. as we remember the cross as

1143. central, as we remember that

1144. reality, that's the antidote to

  1145. the virus of hypocrisy.

1146. Remembering what Jesus has done

  1147. for us.

1148. It's the answer to the false

1149. paths of legalism and lawlessness

1150. to reflect with gratitude on the

1151. Son of God who loved me and gave

  1152. himself for me.

1153. It's the key to gospel balance,

1154. to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus

1155. and his finished work on the cross.
