  1. How you guys doing?

  2. Well, that's terrible.

  3. It's like three people.

  4. How you guys doing?

  5. Yeah, it was a great day to be here with you guys.

  6. So my name is Tobin.

  7. I'm one of the teachers here, pastors.

  8. And I have a problem.

  9. It's this massive problem.

  10. Struggle with this darkness inside of me.

  11. Sometimes I don't see the darkness.

  12. Sometimes I just go on and think I'm doing okay.

  13. The darkness is hidden.

  14. But I know it's there because it's looking for little opportunities to jump out and to grab me and to change me.

  15. I've said over and over again that one of my biggest struggles is being a dad.

  16. I mean, I feel like I'm very teachable as a parent.

  17. I mean, I feel like I'm trying to figure out what does it mean to be a dad and a husband and all these things.

  18. And reading books and asking questions.

  19. And I realize as often as a dad that the darkness comes out.

  20. I really blew it last night.

  21. So we had got this little thing that we wanted to do as a couple.

  22. And we started doing it maybe last Christmas as a family.

  23. And we'd watch movies on Saturday nights.

  24. And we'd watch them and then we would discuss them.

  25. And almost all the movies are hallmark movies.

  26. And they're talking about, you know, usually someone gets a divorce or their spouse dies.

  27. And then someone comes in to the back door.

  28. And there's these four kids that are out of control.

  29. And then they find this perfect relationship.

  30. And within an hour and a half everything's fixed and it's perfect.

  31. And we watch it.

  32. And then we discuss it with our kids afterwards.

  33. But one of the things I realized really quickly is that, and I think it's the curse of technology,

  34. all of our components don't fit, right?

  35. You buy something new and then you have to upgrade the other thing.

  36. And it's, you women know what I'm talking about.

  37. Like when you do accessories or you buy a new dress, you can't just use the old shoes.

  38. You've got to buy new shoes and new hats and all these things.

  39. Clarissa's back there shaking her head.

  40. Everybody, I'm catching here.

  41. And so I realized that we can't get sound.

  42. So I'm trying to communicate between my Mac and this Samsung TV.

  43. And it's just worthless.

  44. I might as well just buy a computer that Samsung has copied from Mac and allow them to use and connect.

  45. Because then you'll at least have two quasi-Samsung, you know, things working together.

  46. And so I've tried everything.

  47. I've tried cords and cables.

  48. And we just sit really close to the computer and we're listening to the speakers of the computer

  49. trying to figure out what's going on.

  50. And so finally I said, okay, I got it down.

  51. And so I did all this research and found out a way to do a Bluetooth speaker to our computer.

  52. And we'll have it behind us and we can listen to it.

  53. And I'm like, this is going to be great.

  54. The kids are going to be excellent.

  55. And their kids are going to be like, praise dad.

  56. I'm going to build this monument to me as a dad, right?

  57. I'm making a name for myself as a dad.

  58. And it's going to be amazing because once we can finally hear music without sitting two inches from the computer,

  59. everybody's like, hallelujah.

  60. You are so great.

  61. You are great.

  62. And so we get to this place where last night was that night.

  63. So I get everything set up and get this, you know, I did all this research and got this,

  64. and it wasn't a cheap Bluetooth thing, but it was, you know, it's okay.

  65. And this would get the job done.

  66. It will work.

  67. And charge it up.

  68. And we got down there and we sat down.

  69. And, okay, so here's the moment of truth.

  70. Praise the Lord.

  71. Praise dad.

  72. And I turned on the computer and we turned on the speaker.

  73. And Christina's looking at me and we're syncing them.

  74. And they sync.

  75. And as the sound starts in the computer and on the screen, the speaker right beside us goes,

  76. and Kiki looks at me and goes, who farted?

  77. For the Chinese.

  78. And he said, someone run from Pima, you know, and so, and I'm like, what?

  79. This is the great moment.

  80. This is the moment where everything's going to be good and I'm going to get praise.

  81. I'll make my name great.

  82. I'm going to build this monument.

  83. And so I said, there must be something wrong.

  84. And I reset it and I set it up again and we're going to play it again and turn on the computer

  85. and put the speaker right beside it and turn it on and, I mean, it makes this incredibly,

  86. I don't know if I could say pass gas or fart in the church, but I did.

  87. And so it is, and all my kids are laughing, right?

  88. They just think it's the greatest thing.

  89. Hey, can we go buy some more of these things?

  90. Because I want to give them to my friends.

  91. Because what a great machine.

  92. It makes farting noises when you turn it on.

  93. And I'm just sitting there like, okay, my idol is falling down and my name is becoming,

  94. instead of the dad who fixes the sound, I'm the dad who farts or makes a fart machine, right?

  95. And so my kids are laughing and they love it and they just think it's the greatest thing.

  96. And inside, I'm just, I'm dying.

  97. I mean, I'm furious.

  98. Like, okay, I did all this research.

  99. I got all this stuff.

  100. I spent all this money.

  101. I mean, I want to go back today and I take that speaker to those guys and just say,

  102. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am right now.

  103. But I'm just, and I'm dying and I'm walking away and I'm so angry.

  104. Because I had all these great expectations, all these things and all these praises.

  105. And dad, you really came through for us.

  106. And basically what I felt like was this loser written on me.

  107. And I had to get up the next day, today, and preach a sermon.

  108. And I have all this anger and frustration because I wanted to be made great and make my name great

  109. and my kids love me and I felt like a failure, a struggle, the darkness, the shadow,

  110. the shadow that's in there and it comes out when I least expect it.

  111. When I want to be made great, it comes out and makes me about that tall.

  112. You ever felt the shadow?

  113. You ever felt the struggle?

  114. You ever done something so perfect and so righteous and you're expecting this amazing response

  115. and all of a sudden it's just...

  116. Why did I share that story?

  117. Yeah, I don't know.

  118. We'll get back to it later on.

  119. So, we are, if you are here, we are looking at this thing called God's story and our story.

  120. And we're looking at the Bible as one story because sometimes we realize that we come to the Bible

  121. and we look at it as a whole bunch of different small stories.

  122. And when we get these small stories and don't see this big story, we get lost.

  123. But the Bible is actually this huge story and at the center of this story, there's just one hero.

  124. And I think we get confused sometimes because we think that the Bible is about us,

  125. but the Bible is really about God and he's the one who is the hero.

  126. And as we look at him in this story, we realize a lot about us.

  127. Now, if you're new to Watermark, I'm going to say it out here right now,

  128. that we believe that the Bible is God's inspired word to us.

  129. We believe that it's the instruction manual for life.

  130. It's better than Oprah.

  131. It's better than Dr. Phil.

  132. If you come to us and you're having struggles, one of the first things we'll probably say as a staff

  133. is not how you're feeling or how you're doing, but we might say,

  134. have you looked into God's word?

  135. And what does God's word say to you?

  136. It's timeless.

  137. It's wisdom.

  138. Again, it's wiser than Bloomberg and Kramer and Morningstar if you want to order your life and be successful.

  139. So we've been looking through this story of God's story and our story,

  140. and we're still in the book of Genesis because those first 11 chapters of Genesis are just massive.

  141. They are the foundation for everything we're going to do from here on out as God's people

  142. as we read these next series here.

  143. And remember that Genesis is written by Moses.

  144. So Moses had just taken the people out of Egypt.

  145. They had been in bondage in Egypt for 400 years.

  146. They had been building towers and monuments with brick and stone, I mean with stone and just great stuff.

  147. And they're heading out of Egypt, and they're heading to this promised land.

  148. It's not Texas.

  149. That is one of the promised lands.

  150. But it's, you're supposed to laugh, guys, come on.

  151. But it's Canaan, and Moses is writing them.

  152. He's writing these stories of God, and God is the hero,

  153. to remind them as they go into this new land,

  154. and they go on this new journey of God's faithfulness and of our struggles.

  155. The first five books of the Bible, if you're Jewish, we call them the Torah.

  156. It's the law and the prophets and the histories.

  157. If you're here at Watermark, we just call them the Pentateuch.

  158. We call them the Pentateuch, meaning five, right?

  159. And Tuch, meaning toque.

  160. It doesn't really mean toque.

  161. It means scrolls.

  162. And so we're looking at these five scrolls,

  163. and we're basically saying that all of these things are just one book.

  164. And two weeks ago, we looked at Genesis 1 and 2.

  165. And in Genesis 1 and 2, we looked at the creation story,

  166. and we saw that God has existed from eternity,

  167. that he's within a trinity.

  168. He's Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  169. And they have been communing and fellowshipping together from eternity past,

  170. and they get together, and they create.

  171. They create everything that's here, everything that you see now,

  172. the potential for it, it's been created by God.

  173. And after each creative act, God said it was good.

  174. And he looked at it, and he said, it's good.

  175. And we learned that God established his rule, his authority.

  176. He gave us his word.

  177. He created a place.

  178. He created a garden.

  179. We call it Eden.

  180. And finally, he makes people.

  181. He made us in his image.

  182. You and I are unique.

  183. We would say that each one of us has God's DNA and fingerprint on us.

  184. We would say that each one of us has God's watermark on us.

  185. And we see in the passage that God created us for community.

  186. We also see that you and I are meant to live within relationships,

  187. that single and by ourselves, without relationships,

  188. is not God's plan for us.

  189. God means for us to be in community and in relations with others.

  190. Last week, we looked at Genesis 3,

  191. and we saw this breaking of this relationship with God.

  192. We call it the fall in the Bible.

  193. It's in Eden, and God brings the couple, Adam and Eve, into the garden,

  194. and he gives them everything, but he commands them not to eat out of one tree.

  195. He says, just don't eat out of this certain tree.

  196. He gives them a choice.

  197. He gives them a choice.

  198. Are we going to trust him?

  199. Are we going to trust that he's good?

  200. Are we going to trust that he has our best at heart?

  201. Are we going to trust that he's going to take care of us?

  202. I mean, he gave them everything, and he also gives them freedom of choice.

  203. And he's asking them, he's asking us, do we want to be in community with him?

  204. Do we want to be his people, or do we not want to be?

  205. And we saw that the couple disobeyed God.

  206. They doubted God's goodness.

  207. Eve struggled with this question that you and I, if we're honest,

  208. we struggle with probably more than one time a day.

  209. And the question is, can I really trust God to look out for me?

  210. Is God really good?

  211. Will he really do good for me?

  212. Or do I need to do good for myself?

  213. And when Eve struggled with this question internally and by herself,

  214. not talking to anybody, not even talking to God about this,

  215. she said no.

  216. And she sought to find her identity apart from God.

  217. She ate the fruit.

  218. And we see that man quickly followed them.

  219. And the passage says that our sin, our parents, our first parents,

  220. they sinned, and when they sinned in creation, in this perfection,

  221. that everything was twisted.

  222. Everything became broken.

  223. Everything became shadowy.

  224. Our view of God was broken.

  225. Our relationship with God was broken.

  226. And if our relationship with our Creator is broken,

  227. then if we see God and we don't see Him right,

  228. then we're not going to see ourselves right.

  229. How we see ourselves is broken.

  230. Because we measure everything by God.

  231. That's the way we are made to be.

  232. And if we can't see ourselves properly,

  233. we don't understand ourselves,

  234. then we don't see other people around us,

  235. and we don't deal with other people like God meant for us to be

  236. because we're twisted and we're broken and we have these shadows.

  237. And if we don't see God and we don't see ourselves and we don't see others,

  238. then we surely don't see creation the way God meant for it to be.

  239. And all of these things, as we look around in God's Word,

  240. they're tainted and they're changed and it's broken.

  241. And instead of getting this massive blessing that our first parents thought they were going to get,

  242. they actually got this curse.

  243. And we saw last week that God, He pursued them,

  244. and they tried to hide, but He kept coming after them.

  245. He kept trying to bring grace,

  246. and there was punishment for disobedience.

  247. And He pronounces punishment,

  248. but right afterwards,

  249. He covers them.

  250. He covers them with these animal skins.

  251. It's the first blood sacrifice

  252. in the history of the history.

  253. He kills these animals,

  254. and blood is shed,

  255. and the skin is put on them

  256. so that their guilt

  257. and their nakedness

  258. could be covered

  259. so that God,

  260. in fellowship with God,

  261. can be restored.

  262. And we see for the first time last week

  263. that this announcement of the first gospel,

  264. it begins in Genesis.

  265. It's the first good news.

  266. And what we hear

  267. in this idea of ultimate grace

  268. is that God is going to,

  269. through this woman,

  270. bring up a Savior,

  271. a man who will be born

  272. to save us from the curse

  273. that we receive from our first parents.

  274. And then what we see

  275. in the passage from last week

  276. is they were sent out of Eden.

  277. They were sent out of God's place.

  278. They were sent out of God's blessing.

  279. They were removed from the land

  280. that God specifically made for them,

  281. for us.

  282. And from that point on,

  283. we see there's a symbolism in God's word

  284. that whenever we go east,

  285. whenever we go east,

  286. it's a symbol of that we're leaving God.

  287. We're leaving blessings.

  288. We're leaving His grace.

  289. We're trying to pursue blessings on our own.

  290. We're saying that He's not good.

  291. We need to do it.

  292. We want to make a name for ourselves.

  293. We want to build a tower to our fatherhood.

  294. And what we see for the next eight chapters

  295. is that mankind just kind of spirals.

  296. And if we could draw it on this board,

  297. we'd be going down and down and down.

  298. And we're going farther east from God

  299. and farther east.

  300. And God is pursuing us.

  301. And we're trying to fix ourselves.

  302. We're trying to get rid of the curse.

  303. We're trying to find blessing.

  304. We're trying to get our own identity.

  305. We're trying to say this is who I am.

  306. And we try to do it in things.

  307. And what the passage says,

  308. that the world gets worse and worse and worse

  309. and sin and shame and guilt and depravity

  310. and envy and self-centeredness and wickedness abound.

  311. And the world is not good.

  312. Adam and Eve go off.

  313. And in chapter four,

  314. we see they have these two sons.

  315. The first one's name is Cain.

  316. And his name actually means successful and productive.

  317. The second son's name is Abel.

  318. And his name means weak, vapor, nobody.

  319. I mean, you can already guess who's the favorite son, right?

  320. And we're told that both of these boys

  321. have fellowship with God.

  322. And one day, they bring this offering to God.

  323. And God, we're told, notices Abel's offering

  324. because it's in faith.

  325. Abel's a shepherd.

  326. And he brings the first fruit of his flock.

  327. We're going to come back to this later on,

  328. but the first fruit is this idea that it's the best.

  329. It's the very first.

  330. It'd be like when you get a paycheck,

  331. whatever you're giving,

  332. whoever you give to your parents or your church

  333. or whatever that looks like,

  334. you give the first fruit,

  335. it means you're giving the biggest chunk,

  336. the very first thing to whoever you're giving it to.

  337. With this idea that no matter what happens,

  338. even if things get hard,

  339. Abel knew that God was going to take care of him

  340. because he was worshiping the Lord.

  341. We're seeing that Abel gave these fat portions.

  342. It's this idea of the best.

  343. Now, today, we don't like to talk about fat,

  344. but in that day, fat was really important

  345. because people were starving to death.

  346. And the fatty parts were the best parts.

  347. And so we see that Abel gave the first fruits

  348. and he gave the best,

  349. and this pleased the Lord

  350. because he was trusting God to take care of him,

  351. even if a need should happen.

  352. And the passage says that Cain came

  353. and he just kind of gave some leftovers.

  354. Cain's a farmer and he brings this fruit.

  355. And it's kind of like he would look at the end of the month

  356. and whatever was left,

  357. he just gave it to God or his parents

  358. or whoever he's giving these things to.

  359. It's almost like this attitude of,

  360. I don't really need it anyway,

  361. so I might as well give it to God

  362. because I can do without it

  363. because I have enough saved up.

  364. And Cain gets angry

  365. because his brother finds favor in God's eyes

  366. and Cain is jealous of his brother's

  367. spiritual relationship with God.

  368. And the passage tells us that God steps in

  369. and he warns Cain.

  370. He begs with him.

  371. He pleads him.

  372. He says, hey, this thing called sin,

  373. it's at your door.

  374. It's wanting to consume you.

  375. It's sitting there.

  376. And in this passage,

  377. it's the first time this idea of sin,

  378. the word is actually used in all the Bible.

  379. That this sin is crouching.

  380. It's like this lion.

  381. It's trying to hide.

  382. It doesn't want to look important.

  383. It wants you to come over and play with it

  384. and touch it and hang out with it

  385. because you don't think it's going to hurt you

  386. like we do all the time.

  387. And God is warning him in his grace,

  388. don't get near it.

  389. Don't be quiet

  390. because if you go by it,

  391. it's going to jump on you

  392. and it's going to consume you.

  393. But Cain doesn't listen to God.

  394. And Cain allows the anger

  395. and frustration to come up

  396. and we're told that he takes his brother

  397. into this field and he kills him.

  398. And we see this passage

  399. in the story of mankind

  400. is out of control

  401. and it's kind of rolling around

  402. and in the midst of this world

  403. we see these two principles

  404. continually colliding with each other.

  405. And the first principle is that God,

  406. that sin is always present in our lives.

  407. That there's always this darkness

  408. that we're going to struggle with this.

  409. I know we don't like to talk about sin in here.

  410. I've had people come to me

  411. and say,

  412. I don't want to talk about sin.

  413. I just want to,

  414. okay, I'm a sinner, that's great,

  415. but let's move on

  416. and I don't want to deal with sin.

  417. But the Bible deals with sin a lot.

  418. And so we see in this story of mankind

  419. that sin is always present in our life

  420. and we're always going to struggle

  421. with pride and jealousy and fear

  422. and anger and lust and envy.

  423. And God says,

  424. be careful because it wants to consume you.

  425. It wants to destroy you.

  426. And like in the garden

  427. with our parents,

  428. as parents,

  429. we're always going to have this struggle

  430. with doubting God's goodness.

  431. We're going to wonder,

  432. is God really for me?

  433. And because of that,

  434. you and I,

  435. we're going to want to build our identity

  436. apart from God.

  437. Because who knows what God's going to do,

  438. but I know what I'm going to do.

  439. And so we go on this journey

  440. of building our identity apart from God.

  441. We try to prove ourselves.

  442. We try to make a name for ourselves.

  443. We try to make our names great.

  444. So here's a question.

  445. I'm going to stop the story here.

  446. Where are you in this story?

  447. What are you trying to grab onto today

  448. to prove yourself?

  449. What is there in your life

  450. that you're depending upon

  451. for your identity?

  452. What is there that if it was taken away from you

  453. that your world would fall apart?

  454. What do you try to do

  455. to make yourself great apart from God?

  456. For some of us,

  457. it's being the best.

  458. For some of us,

  459. it's being the first.

  460. For some of us,

  461. it's being the wisest.

  462. For some of us,

  463. it's being the richest.

  464. For some of us,

  465. it's just having whatever we need

  466. because we want that.

  467. For some of us,

  468. it's relationships.

  469. But the question for us today

  470. is what are we basing our identity on?

  471. Because it's this struggle

  472. that's going on around us

  473. and it's been going on

  474. throughout Scripture

  475. and we're going to see it played out

  476. over and over again

  477. in God's word

  478. and in our lives

  479. as we continue to go to that.

  480. The second thing we see

  481. is that God,

  482. even though sin

  483. and we're struggling with it,

  484. God is always there.

  485. But God is pursuing His people

  486. that He's showing Himself to us.

  487. He's helping us see

  488. the shadows in our life.

  489. He's pointing to our heart

  490. like He did with Cain

  491. and with Adam and Eve

  492. and with everybody since then.

  493. He's showing us our need for Him.

  494. God comes to Cain

  495. and again,

  496. He passes judgment on him.

  497. But He also brings grace.

  498. And if you go back

  499. and read it this week,

  500. I encourage you to

  501. because I'm just flying

  502. through these things

  503. just to give us

  504. a little taste of it.

  505. But it says that God

  506. gives him a sign.

  507. You know,

  508. I used to think

  509. and I grew up thinking

  510. it meant a mark

  511. that there was some kind

  512. of scar on him

  513. that separated him

  514. and made him not

  515. because Cain,

  516. Cain wasn't even worried

  517. about his brother he killed.

  518. Cain was more worried

  519. about people killing him

  520. when they found out.

  521. And God just took him

  522. where he was at

  523. and we're told here

  524. that God gives him

  525. this sign,

  526. this sign

  527. that will protect him

  528. from people around him.

  529. It's a sign of mercy

  530. and sign of grace.

  531. The word is the exact same word

  532. that God uses

  533. for the rainbow

  534. and the flood.

  535. It's the exact same word

  536. that God uses

  537. for this idea

  538. of circumcision.

  539. He gives him

  540. some kind of sign

  541. of his grace

  542. and mercy

  543. that separates him

  544. from all people

  545. and they realize

  546. that God's fingers

  547. are upon him

  548. and God is protecting him.

  549. So we have this struggle

  550. with sin and fighting

  551. and we have this idea

  552. of God coming in

  553. and he's pursuing us

  554. and he's bringing grace

  555. and he's talking to us.

  556. He's talking to us

  557. through his word,

  558. through nature,

  559. through our friends,

  560. through his spirit

  561. and in our heart

  562. and the question is

  563. what are we going to do

  564. with that?

  565. Are we going to take that?

  566. And what we see

  567. in the last couple chapters

  568. before chapter 11

  569. is things just get worse.

  570. I mean things start

  571. to spiral down

  572. and down

  573. and down

  574. and in Genesis 6-11

  575. God basically says

  576. that the whole earth

  577. is corrupt.

  578. He says there's not

  579. a person in the earth

  580. at that time

  581. that has a thought

  582. towards him.

  583. There's no one

  584. who wants to know God.

  585. They're all wanting

  586. to know themselves

  587. and to build up

  588. their selves

  589. and build up their reputation

  590. and build up their idols

  591. and the corruption

  592. is so bad

  593. that God says

  594. okay it has to come

  595. to an end

  596. and so he sends

  597. this massive flood

  598. to destroy the corruption

  599. but before he does it

  600. he saves one man,

  601. Noah.

  602. And so he brings Noah

  603. into this ark

  604. and into this covenant

  605. relationship

  606. and it doesn't say

  607. that Noah was holy,

  608. that he was perfect,

  609. that he was good,

  610. he was even seeking God.

  611. All it says is

  612. for some reason

  613. God had mercy on him.

  614. Pure grace was poured out

  615. and he starts over

  616. and so Noah goes in

  617. and everything's wiped out

  618. and Noah comes out

  619. and as you see

  620. in the very first part

  621. of your passage

  622. again God gives Noah

  623. the same command

  624. that he gave Adam and Eve

  625. and that command is

  626. for them to be fruitful

  627. and multiply

  628. and fill the earth.

  629. But when you read

  630. the story of Noah

  631. and we're going to come back

  632. to it later on

  633. you see this idea

  634. that the brokenness

  635. and the shadows

  636. are still there

  637. and things aren't better,

  638. they get worse

  639. and within a very short time

  640. mankind starts

  641. to fall apart again.

  642. We start walking

  643. east from God,

  644. we start walking away

  645. from God's blessing,

  646. we start walking away

  647. from God's favor,

  648. we're trying to build

  649. our own name,

  650. our own reputation,

  651. we're trying to build

  652. a tower

  653. and a city

  654. for ourselves

  655. and corruption

  656. is everywhere

  657. and in the midst

  658. of God's story

  659. God continues

  660. to pursue,

  661. God continues

  662. to pursue,

  663. God continues

  664. to pursue

  665. and he comes in

  666. and he pursues us

  667. even when we mock him,

  668. even when we laugh at him,

  669. even when we don't want him,

  670. God's mercy

  671. and his grace

  672. and his love

  673. pursues his people.

  674. Does that make sense?

  675. Does that make sense?

  676. You're all very quiet.

  677. So we come to the passage today

  678. and I'm just going to look through it

  679. and I want us again

  680. to see two things

  681. or these two threads

  682. and the first thread

  683. is found in verses

  684. one through four

  685. and what we're going to see

  686. is that mankind

  687. continually spirals

  688. and gets corrupt

  689. and falls farther away from God

  690. and we're moving east

  691. away from God,

  692. we're moving into sin,

  693. we're moving into self-righteousness,

  694. we're moving into ourself

  695. and the second thing

  696. we're going to see

  697. is that God continues

  698. to pursue us,

  699. verse five through nine.

  700. We fall away,

  701. we run away,

  702. God pursues,

  703. God extends grace

  704. and that's one of the threads

  705. throughout all the Bible

  706. and if we miss this,

  707. we miss God's incredible act

  708. and remember that the idea

  709. that he wanted us to do

  710. was to go out

  711. and to multiply

  712. and fill the earth

  713. and make a kingdom

  714. for his name

  715. and make a city

  716. for his name

  717. and make a tower

  718. for his name

  719. but what you see

  720. is the people

  721. start to trust themselves again.

  722. Verse one says,

  723. now the whole earth

  724. has the same language,

  725. the same words.

  726. In Hebrew,

  727. the words actually mean

  728. they have the same lip,

  729. they have the same speech,

  730. they have one vocabulary.

  731. I've done a lot of research

  732. on this

  733. and what all the scholars say

  734. is that everybody

  735. spoke perfect Texan,

  736. everybody.

  737. So the whole earth

  738. was amazing,

  739. we spoke perfect Texas dialect

  740. and we understood each other

  741. and when we said

  742. eraser was an eraser

  743. and a garbage can

  744. was a garbage can

  745. and not a trash can

  746. and Nutella was Nutella

  747. and everybody,

  748. everything,

  749. it was just a perfect world.

  750. It was harmony everywhere.

  751. Diet Coke meant diet Coke

  752. to everybody.

  753. It didn't mean Coke light

  754. or Coke zero.

  755. But what we see

  756. in this passage

  757. verses one through four

  758. is that in our pride,

  759. in our arrogance,

  760. we just continue

  761. to travel east from God

  762. and we travel east from God

  763. and the people of God,

  764. the people of God,

  765. all that are left

  766. after the flood,

  767. so remember there's eight

  768. and now we don't know

  769. how long it's been,

  770. maybe several hundred years,

  771. but they come

  772. and they settle

  773. in this valley of Shinar,

  774. it's basically called

  775. the valley of the world

  776. and they come there

  777. and their desire

  778. is not to obey God's command.

  779. Their desire

  780. is not to follow God,

  781. their desire

  782. is not to go west,

  783. their desire

  784. is to go east

  785. and they want to settle

  786. and they want to try

  787. to build a name,

  788. they want to try

  789. to build a city,

  790. they want to try

  791. to build a tower

  792. for themselves,

  793. they want to set

  794. themselves apart,

  795. they want to set

  796. themselves apart,

  797. the text says,

  798. so that the whole world

  799. looks at them

  800. and goes,

  801. wow.

  802. The name of the place

  803. is called Babel,

  804. it actually means

  805. the gate of the gods

  806. and so they're there

  807. and they want to build

  808. this big town,

  809. city,

  810. tower,

  811. so that the whole world

  812. looks at them

  813. and says,

  814. God.

  815. So a question for you,

  816. if everybody

  817. is actually there

  818. with them

  819. at this time,

  820. who are they

  821. actually building

  822. the tower

  823. in the town

  824. to say,

  825. look at what we've done?

  826. Who are they

  827. actually building it for?

  828. I mean,

  829. all of creation

  830. and all the people

  831. are there

  832. and they're saying

  833. we want to make

  834. a name great

  835. for ourselves

  836. but they're all there

  837. so who are they

  838. trying to impress?

  839. God.

  840. Because all the people

  841. are there,

  842. they don't have anybody

  843. to impress

  844. because all the people

  845. are there

  846. and so what they're

  847. actually trying to do

  848. is what we've been

  849. trying to do

  850. all of our lives,

  851. we've been trying

  852. to show off,

  853. we're trying to impress God,

  854. we're trying to do things

  855. that God looks at us

  856. and goes,

  857. wow, Tobin,

  858. he's really good,

  859. he fixed the Wi-Fi

  860. and got all those things

  861. set up and everything's

  862. perfect,

  863. let's build a statue

  864. for him

  865. and all along

  866. in this passage

  867. we see that sin,

  868. our shadow side

  869. is going to drive us

  870. to build our own identity,

  871. sin,

  872. the thing that our parents

  873. unleashed in the garden

  874. is going to help us

  875. and encourage us

  876. to make a name

  877. for ourselves,

  878. to make a great name

  879. for ourselves

  880. always apart from God.

  881. We had four more sermons

  882. I would come back

  883. and talk about this tower

  884. in this city

  885. because the implications

  886. for it are massive

  887. socially,

  888. economically,

  889. and religiously.

  890. There's this guy,

  891. his name is Nimrod,

  892. he's one of the sons

  893. of the sons of Noah

  894. and his name

  895. actually means Nimrod,

  896. it actually means

  897. we shall rebel.

  898. Now I've never dedicated

  899. a little kid

  900. named Nimrod

  901. which probably

  902. is a good idea,

  903. right?

  904. But this guy's name,

  905. it says it all,

  906. his name is

  907. we're going to rebel,

  908. we're going to build

  909. these things

  910. and what we see

  911. is that they want

  912. to build this tower

  913. and it's going to be

  914. incredibly significant,

  915. it's going to be

  916. a place of worship,

  917. it's going to be

  918. a place where people

  919. go to make a name

  920. for themselves,

  921. it's going to be

  922. a place where people

  923. go to make

  924. their own kingdom,

  925. kind of like IFC,

  926. you know,

  927. one, two, and three

  928. in Hong Kong.

  929. It's kind of like that,

  930. right?

  931. That's where people go

  932. to make a name

  933. for themselves

  934. and make their names

  935. great and so this

  936. is this tower

  937. and the goal behind it

  938. and all along

  939. the feeling is

  940. is that they want

  941. to do it without God.

  942. They want to do it

  943. separated from God

  944. and so they start

  945. to build

  946. and they're building

  947. everything because

  948. they want to build

  949. their significance

  950. because they lost it.

  951. They want to feel secure

  952. because they've lost

  953. their security in the garden.

  954. They want to do

  955. all these things

  956. to say,

  957. look at what we've done,

  958. we're okay,

  959. Tobin,

  960. you are really good,

  961. you have your act

  962. together,

  963. man,

  964. you're just great.

  965. Man,

  966. struggling with the

  967. darkness,

  968. sin,

  969. pursuing us,

  970. coming into our lives,

  971. saying,

  972. hey,

  973. I'm not that bad,

  974. come here,

  975. play with me,

  976. but when we grab it,

  977. it just rips our arm off.

  978. Then in verse five,

  979. it's kind of like the

  980. hinge of this whole passage.

  981. It's this passage

  982. where God comes in

  983. in his grace.

  984. It's where God

  985. comes into the story.

  986. The language is very

  987. colorful.

  988. It's very,

  989. if you were Hebrew,

  990. you would laugh

  991. as you heard about

  992. what they're trying to

  993. build and how they're

  994. trying to build it.

  995. This idea is that

  996. the people are down

  997. there saying,

  998. look at my great

  999. achievement.

  1000. Look at everything

  1001. I've done.

  1002. Come here,

  1003. God,

  1004. check this out.

  1005. It says God

  1006. comes down

  1007. and God comes down

  1008. and he's looking

1009. and he can't find it.

  1010. All of a sudden,

1011. he gets down on his

  1012. hands and knees

  1013. and he looks down

  1014. and he can barely

  1015. see it.

  1016. It says,

  1017. that's what our

  1018. greatest achievements

  1019. look like

  1020. to the creator

  1021. of the universe.

  1022. I mean,

  1023. when you compare

  1024. the greatest achievements

  1025. we've ever done

  1026. to a star

  1027. or to a galaxy

  1028. or to a human,

  1029. they look like nothing.

  1030. And in verse 6,

  1031. the language is not

  1032. a language of fear

  1033. but it's a language

  1034. of deep concern

  1035. and deep mercy

  1036. and grace

1037. and God looks at them

1038. as he looks at the Father

  1039. and he says,

  1040. if I allow them

  1041. to keep going,

  1042. if I allow them

1043. to keep the same language,

  1044. they're just going

  1045. to get in trouble.

  1046. The sin is going

  1047. to multiply

  1048. and it's going

  1049. to become great

  1050. and it's going

  1051. to become close

  1052. to an extinction event

  1053. like it did

  1054. in the flood

  1055. and I love them

  1056. too much.

  1057. I don't want to see

  1058. these things happen

  1059. and so it says

  1060. in God

  1061. and his mercy

  1062. and his grace,

  1063. he comes down

  1064. and he confuses

  1065. everything.

  1066. He confuses the language.

  1067. He confuses

  1068. the meaning of language.

  1069. People are no longer

  1070. speaking perfect Texan

  1071. but now they're

  1072. speaking Aussie.

  1073. Canadian,

  1074. South African

  1075. and British English

  1076. and even Canadian.

  1077. They're speaking

  1078. all these things

  1079. and all these

  1080. different meanings,

  1081. right?

  1082. It's just crazy

  1083. and you can't

  1084. get anything done

  1085. because everybody's

  1086. arguing about

  1087. what you call something.

  1088. It's called Nutella.

  1089. It's called nougat.

  1090. But my Aussie friends

  1091. argue with me

  1092. all the time

  1093. and so these people,

  1094. this place of unity

  1095. becomes this place

  1096. of disunity

  1097. and in this craziness,

  1098. sometimes God uses

1099. crazy things in our life

1100. to prevent us from sin.

1101. Did you ever know that?

  1102. Sometimes God allows us

  1103. to lose our jobs.

  1104. Sometimes God allows us

1105. to get a broken relationship.

  1106. Sometimes God allows

  1107. hard things to happen

  1108. in our life

1109. because he loves us so much

  1110. and he knows

  1111. where we're heading

1112. and he doesn't want us

  1113. to see ourselves

  1114. destroy ourselves.

  1115. And so sometimes God

  1116. uses craziness

  1117. to bring us back

  1118. to him

  1119. to take us away

  1120. from our self-sufficiency

1121. and this place of unity

1122. becomes a place of disunity

1123. and the people just give up

  1124. and they scatter

  1125. over all the earth

1126. just like God wanted to

1127. in the very first time.

  1128. It was God's plan

  1129. from the very beginning

1130. but we just didn't listen.

1131. And so he has to take us

  1132. to all these things

  1133. in the midst

  1134. of all these things

  1135. we continue to realize

  1136. that we're spiraling

  1137. and we're spiraling

  1138. and we're spiraling

1139. and the gates of God

  1140. are no longer

  1141. the gates of God.

  1142. They're a place of confusion.

  1143. From now on

  1144. throughout all scripture

  1145. whenever you read

  1146. the words Babel

  1147. or Babylon

  1148. it's always seen

  1149. as this place

  1150. of opposition to God.

  1151. It's always seen

  1152. as a place

  1153. where people try

1154. to become their own gods.

  1155. It's always seen

1156. as a place of pride.

  1157. It's always seen

  1158. as a place

  1159. of godlessness.

  1160. It's always seen

  1161. as a place

  1162. of God's judgment.

  1163. judgment.

  1164. The gates of God

  1165. become the gates

  1166. of confusion

  1167. and God wins.

  1168. So we see

  1169. this struggle

  1170. that we have

  1171. with the darkness.

  1172. We see God's grace

  1173. coming in

  1174. and changing us

  1175. and making us

  1176. his children.

  1177. It's a great story

  1178. isn't it?

  1179. I think it's

  1180. an amazing story.

  1181. We're going to

  1182. take it up

  1183. more next week

  1184. but I want to

  1185. give you

  1186. some thoughts

  1187. that I've been

  1188. thinking through

  1189. even last night

  1190. when I was hoping

  1191. that I would get

  1192. this large

  1193. identity ego boost

  1194. from my family

  1195. and my kids.

  1196. Here's some questions

1197. I want us to think

  1198. about this week.

  1199. which direction

  1200. are you traveling

  1201. in today?

  1202. Are you traveling

  1203. east?

  1204. Are you traveling

  1205. away from God?

  1206. Are you traveling

  1207. in such a way

  1208. to build up

  1209. your own name

  1210. and your reputation?

  1211. Are you ignoring

  1212. God's plans

  1213. for your life?

  1214. is there this sin

  1215. that you've been

  1216. playing with

1217. for such a long time

  1218. and you've reached

  1219. down to grab onto

  1220. and it's just

  1221. got a death grip

  1222. on you?

  1223. It's pulling you

  1224. farther and farther

  1225. away from God.

  1226. Are we traveling

  1227. west?

  1228. Are we traveling

  1229. towards God's mercy

  1230. and His grace

  1231. and realizing

  1232. that He's always there?

  1233. He's always cheering

  1234. for us.

  1235. He's always pursuing us.

  1236. God never rests

  1237. because we messed up.

1238. And He loves us so much

  1239. He just continues

  1240. to pursue

  1241. and continue to pursue

  1242. and continue to pursue.

  1243. Second question

  1244. I've been dealing with.

1245. Do you see the sin

  1246. in your life?

  1247. I mean the passage

  1248. says that sin

  1249. is always present

  1250. in our lives.

  1251. That we're always

1252. going to have this desire

  1253. to provide for ourselves

1254. to make our name great

  1255. to build ourselves up

  1256. without God's help.

  1257. It's one of those

  1258. two constants

  1259. in that battle.

1260. Do you see the sin

  1261. and brokenness

  1262. in your life?

  1263. Maybe a better question

  1264. I ask myself sometimes

1265. is how am I trying

  1266. to make a name

  1267. for myself today?

  1268. Am I trying

  1269. to make my name

  1270. because I want

  1271. to make God great?

  1272. Or am I going

1273. to try to make my name

  1274. because I want

  1275. to make Tobin great?

1276. How are we building towers?

  1277. The passage says

  1278. that we all have

  1279. these insecurities.

1280. We all have this fallenness.

1281. We all have this brokenness.

  1282. We're all struggling

  1283. with this broken relationship

  1284. with God

  1285. and we're trying

  1286. to compensate

  1287. with those things.

  1288. What kind of towers

  1289. are you building today

1290. to deal with your insecurity

  1291. and your sin

  1292. and your separation

  1293. from God?

  1294. do you have somebody

  1295. in your life

  1296. who loves you enough

  1297. to point those things

  1298. out to you?

  1299. Do you have somebody

  1300. when you're building

  1301. these towers

  1302. and this name

  1303. and you're doing

  1304. all these great things

  1305. and you're doing it

  1306. for yourself

  1307. do you have somebody

  1308. within your community

  1309. of friends

  1310. or your family

1311. who loves you so much

  1312. and they don't want

1313. to see you go down

  1314. that path

  1315. and they share

  1316. those things with you?

  1317. Do you have somebody

  1318. like that?

  1319. Maybe another question

  1320. will be asked

  1321. how do you respond

  1322. when they tell you?

  1323. I mean even if there's

  1324. only 10% truth

  1325. in what they say

  1326. what are you going

1327. to do with that 10%?

  1328. Are you going

  1329. to ignore it?

  1330. Finally

1331. and this is the thing

  1332. that I am challenged

  1333. by constantly

1334. do you see God's mercy

  1335. and grace

  1336. in your life

  1337. these days?

  1338. Maybe I should ask

  1339. first do you see

  1340. God's mercy

  1341. and grace

  1342. in the stories

  1343. and the passages

  1344. I shared?

  1345. The next question

1346. will be do you see

  1347. God's mercy

  1348. and grace

  1349. in your life?

  1350. Do you see

  1351. his hand

  1352. and his faithfulness

  1353. that he's always

  1354. pursuing you

  1355. even when you are

  1356. traveling far east

  1357. of him?

1358. Do you see these things?

  1359. I mean the Bible

  1360. is full of stories

  1361. of men

  1362. who try to attempt

  1363. to escape

  1364. the sin

  1365. and the consequences

  1366. and the curse

  1367. they're all trying

1368. to do it on their own

  1369. and the Bible

1370. says that the only way

  1371. that you and I

  1372. can escape this curse

  1373. the only way

  1374. that we can escape

  1375. the curse

  1376. and the brokenness

  1377. is if God

  1378. in his righteousness

  1379. and through his grace

  1380. takes that curse

  1381. on himself

  1382. do you realize that?

  1383. The only way

  1384. that we can escape

  1385. this fallenness

  1386. and this craziness

  1387. this curse

  1388. the only way

  1389. that we can escape

  1390. it God's word says

1391. is not to become smarter

  1392. not to become better

  1393. not to become

  1394. more gifted

  1395. or caring

  1396. or serving

  1397. but the only way

  1398. that we can escape

  1399. the curse

  1400. is if God

  1401. comes and he takes

  1402. the curse himself

  1403. and you know

  1404. this for some reason

  1405. this is a mystery

  1406. to me

  1407. because I just

  1408. cannot comprehend it

  1409. but the Bible

  1410. says that God

  1411. does that

  1412. that God

  1413. loves us so much

  1414. that he sends

  1415. his son

  1416. Jesus

  1417. who comes

  1418. as we've already

  1419. talked

  1420. 100% man

  1421. and 100% God

  1422. he comes to

  1423. humble himself

  1424. he comes to serve

  1425. he comes to die

  1426. on a cross

  1427. and Galatians 3

  1428. says that he

  1429. actually

  1430. becomes a curse

  1431. for us

  1432. did you know that?

  1433. the only way

  1434. you're going to

  1435. deal with your sin

  1436. and your brokenness

  1437. and your shadow

  1438. that's going on

  1439. inside you

  1440. the only way

  1441. you're going to

1442. get rid of that curse

  1443. is if God

  1444. takes that curse

  1445. and the only way

  1446. that can happen

  1447. is if he sends

  1448. his son

  1449. to die for you

  1450. and when he dies

  1451. on that cross

  1452. he's actually

  1453. cursed

  1454. by God

  1455. he takes

  1456. our curse

  1457. so that one day

  1458. you and I

  1459. will be free

  1460. of God's judgment

  1461. and we can be

  1462. called his people

  1463. and we can walk

  1464. in relationship

  1465. in fellowship

  1466. with him

  1467. the scripture

  1468. says

  1469. there's these two

  1470. threads

  1471. that flow through it

  1472. you and I

  1473. are always going

  1474. to struggle

  1475. with sin

  1476. we're always going

  1477. to struggle

  1478. with our brokenness

  1479. we're always going

  1480. to struggle

  1481. with the darkness

  1482. now we don't want

  1483. to hang out there

  1484. too long

  1485. but that's a truth

  1486. and we have to

  1487. ask ourselves

  1488. what's going on

  1489. and how are we

  1490. dealing with those

  1491. things

  1492. but the passage

  1493. says also

  1494. that God

  1495. is always

  1496. pursuing us

  1497. that he's the

  1498. God of second

  1499. chances

  1500. that he brings

  1501. mercy

  1502. he brings grace

  1503. he brings forgiveness

  1504. and the question

  1505. is will we

  1506. accept that

  1507. or will we

  1508. walk away

  1509. because we

  1510. want to do it

  1511. ourselves

  1512. there's more

  1513. to come next

  1514. week

  1515. the story

  1516. gets even

  1517. bigger

  1518. and grander

  1519. as God

  1520. does amazing

  1521. things for us

  1522. let's pray

  1523. father we thank

  1524. you for this

  1525. day

  1526. we thank you

  1527. for your word

  1528. how it never

  1529. changes

  1530. it is living

  1531. and active

  1532. and it moves

  1533. into our lives

  1534. and it penetrates

  1535. our hearts

  1536. and it shows

  1537. us the

  1538. darkness

  1539. and I pray

  1540. for us

  1541. as a church

  1542. Lord

  1543. that we

  1544. would deal

  1545. with those

  1546. things

  1547. father I pray

  1548. with people

  1549. in here

  1550. right now

  1551. who

  1552. they're far

  1553. east from

  1554. God

  1555. they've never

  1556. entered into

  1557. the family

  1558. they're trying

  1559. to build

  1560. monuments

  1561. to themselves

  1562. they're trying

  1563. to make

  1564. their name

  1565. great

  1566. they're trying

  1567. to do

  1568. everything

  1569. so that

  1570. they can

  1571. overcome

  1572. this fear

  1573. and this

  1574. doubt

  1575. in this

  1576. loneliness

  1577. in this

  1578. brokenness

  1579. in this

  1580. insecurity

  1581. father I pray

  1582. for them

  1583. here right

  1584. now that

  1585. you would

  1586. open their

  1587. eyes

  1588. that they

  1589. would see

  1590. your son

  1591. they would

  1592. see that

  1593. he came

  1594. to remove

  1595. all those

  1596. things from

  1597. them

  1598. and they

  1599. would put

  1600. their trust

  1601. in him

  1602. would I

  1603. pray for my

  1604. brothers and

  1605. sisters there

  1606. that they

  1607. would ask

  1608. questions of

  1609. those people

  1610. who brought

  1611. them

  1612. they would

  1613. ask questions

  1614. of the

  1615. staff and

  1616. anybody

  1617. they've

  1618. seen up

  1619. here

  1620. they would

  1621. ask about

  1622. grace

  1623. they would

  1624. ask about

  1625. the struggle

  1626. of sin

  1627. and I pray

  1628. that we would

  1629. be honest

  1630. enough to

  1631. share

  1632. because I know

  1633. that sometimes

  1634. we go among

  1635. other Christians

  1636. and it looks

  1637. like everybody's

  1638. just perfect

  1639. and there's no

  1640. problems

  1641. for some reason

  1642. when I do

  1643. that I feel

  1644. like I'm

  1645. retarded

  1646. because I look

  1647. at my life

  1648. and I realize

  1649. man I have

  1650. a lot of

  1651. problems

  1652. so I pray

  1653. for them

  1654. that they would

  1655. see that your

  1656. son came

  1657. to heal

  1658. them

  1659. to change

  1660. them

  1661. to take

  1662. the curse

  1663. and to

  1664. forgive them

  1665. Father I pray

  1666. for the rest

  1667. of us your

  1668. children as

  1669. we're on

  1670. this journey

  1671. living in

  1672. the city

  1673. and around

  1674. the towers

  1675. it's really

  1676. easy to

  1677. get

  1678. confused

  1679. and to

  1680. forget about

  1681. mercy and to

  1682. forget about

  1683. grace and to

  1684. forget about

  1685. whose name

  1686. we're really

  1687. living for

  1688. and before

  1689. you know it

  1690. we're building

  1691. our own

  1692. towers

  1693. we're building

  1694. monuments to

  1695. ourselves

  1696. we're building

  1697. a great

  1698. name

  1699. we're hoarding

  1700. the best

  1701. portions of

  1702. our time

  1703. and our

  1704. money and

  1705. our resources

  1706. and our

  1707. intellect

  1708. for our

  1709. kingdom

  1710. and we're

  1711. giving you

  1712. just the

  1713. leftovers

  1714. and all the

  1715. while your

  1716. son comes

  1717. and he

  1718. pursues us

  1719. and he

  1720. brings mercy

  1721. and grace

  1722. Father I pray

  1723. for us as we

  1724. look at this

  1725. word your

  1726. word and we

  1727. ask these

  1728. questions that

  1729. we would allow

  1730. you to change

  1731. us I pray

  1732. there's any of

  1733. us right now

  1734. who's struggling

  1735. with pornography

  1736. or anger

  1737. or abuse

  1738. or even the

  1739. craziness that's

  1740. happened to us

  1741. that we thought

  1742. that we deserve

  1743. something else

  1744. but it didn't

  1745. happen and we

  1746. just have

  1747. bitterness

  1748. and envy

  1749. and we're your

  1750. people and we

  1751. know that that's

  1752. not right and I

  1753. pray Lord that you

  1754. would touch our

  1755. eyes and our

  1756. hearts that we'd

  1757. focus on your

  1758. son Christ that

  1759. we'd come back to

  1760. him and all that

  1761. he's done and as

  1762. we look at how

  1763. beautiful he is

  1764. we wouldn't think

  1765. twice about

  1766. surrendering these

  1767. things to you

  1768. because they're

  1769. nothing compared

  1770. to what you've

  1771. done

  1772. and what we'll

  1773. receive in the

  1774. true city

  1775. your kingdom in

  1776. heaven

  1777. and what I pray

  1778. for us as a

  1779. church that we

  1780. wouldn't forget

  1781. why we're here

  1782. we wouldn't just

  1783. come to feel good

  1784. about ourselves

  1785. and then we would

  1786. leave but we'd

  1787. realize that we're

  1788. here to reach

  1789. people who aren't

  1790. yet in church and

  1791. don't yet know you

  1792. and you surround us

  1793. with all those

  1794. people every day

  1795. in our homes and

  1796. at work and as

1797. we go out to eat

  1798. father help us

  1799. not to forget

  1800. that

  1801. help us to focus

  1802. on the grace

  1803. that you brought

  1804. to us

  1805. and to realize

  1806. that 96% of

  1807. Hong Kong

  1808. needs that

  1809. may we be a

  1810. church that puts

  1811. other churches

  1812. out there and

  1813. plants them so

  1814. that they can reach

  1815. other people who

  1816. are not yet in

  1817. church today

  1818. may we be a

  1819. church that's

  1820. generous

  1821. may we be a

  1822. church that's in

  1823. love with you and

  1824. as we see your

  1825. gospel and your

  1826. grace change us

  1827. we change

  1828. we become more

  1829. like your son

  1830. father we love

  1831. you

  1832. we need you

  1833. desperately

  1834. we thank you that

  1835. you never give up

  1836. on us your

  1837. children

  1838. we pray all these

  1839. things in your

  1840. holy name

  1841. amen
