  1. Father, your son has told us that there's many different ways that your word can come to us,

  2. that some of us people, we can be like shallow ground.

  3. Some can be ground with lots of weeds and thorns.

  4. And some of us, Father, can be good soil.

  5. Some of us can be so hard that your word makes no impression whatsoever.

  6. Father, you know our hearts and you know our minds and you know our wills.

  7. And we ask, Father, that knowing us as you do and knowing that you still love us,

  8. Father, in your mercy and in your kindness, would you so pour out your Holy Spirit upon us this morning

  9. that we will be good soil, that your word will enter deep within our lives,

  10. deep within our minds and hearts and wills,

  11. and that as your word comes into us, that it will bear much fruit for your glory.

  12. This we ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.

  13. Amen. Please be seated.

  14. Just as a bit of an aside,

  15. this Sunday in the blog, which is in your bulletin,

  16. I talk a little bit about the Catholic Church and what the Creed means,

  17. and over the next few weeks, different parts of the Creed in particular.

  18. I'm going to talk about the Church again next week,

  19. and then I'm going to talk about what it means by remission of sins and all that.

  20. But if you have any questions, just send me an email,

  21. and over the next few weeks as I write my weekly blog, I'll try to answer your questions.

  22. Please take your Bible and turn in your Bibles to 1 Thessalonians chapter 5,

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  23. and we're sort of in the middle of a teaching series on practical discipleship.

  24. And so we're taking a series of different commands in the Bible that are practical,

  25. and we're looking at one each week.

  26. And so it's 1 Thessalonians 5 verses 9,

    1 Thessalonians 5:9

  27. and we're going to read down to verse 18,

  28. because verse 18 is the text that I'm going to speak on.

  29. We're going to look at together this morning.

  30. And 1 Thessalonians 5, if you've forgotten your Bibles,

  31. there's always some Bibles up here at the front, and you're welcome to have them.

  32. Here's how the text goes.

  33. For God has not destined us for wrath,

  34. but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  35. who died for us,

  36. so that whether we are awake or asleep, we might live with him.

  37. Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up,

  38. just as you are doing.

  39. We ask you, brothers and sisters,

  40. to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord,

  41. and admonish you,

  42. and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.

  43. Be at peace among yourselves.

  44. And we urge you, brothers and sisters,

  45. admonish the disorderly,

  46. encourage the faint-hearted,

  47. help the weak,

  48. be patient with them all,

  49. see that no one repays anyone evil for evil,

  50. but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

  51. Rejoice always,

  52. pray without ceasing,

  53. give thanks in all circumstances,

  54. for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

  55. And the text we're going to examine together today is,

  56. give thanks in all circumstances,

  57. for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

  58. On Thursday,

  59. I went to my daughter Emma's high school graduation ceremony.

  60. If you're a guest here,

  61. I have nine kids.

  62. Emma's my eighth child,

  63. so it was my eighth high school graduation ceremony.

  64. And, you know,

  65. it's astounding.

  66. I don't know if,

  67. like,

  68. like,

  69. my oldest son,

  70. my oldest child,

  71. I don't know,

  72. like,

  73. if he just is,

  74. like,

  75. really inferior to Emma and her class,

  76. but every single time we go to a high school graduation,

  77. they always tell them that you are the kindest,

  78. smartest,

  79. most gifted,

  80. you know,

  81. on and on and on class.

  82. That,

  83. I mean,

  84. the principal,

  85. the presenters,

  86. they always say that every year.

  87. So I don't know if that means that,

  88. like,

  89. my son was up here,

  90. and they just,

  91. every generation just keeps getting better.

  92. And I don't know,

  93. before long,

  94. they'll all be like,

  95. I don't know,

  96. like,

  97. my grandkids will be like gods and goddesses.

  98. I don't know what's going on.

  99. But every,

  100. every year,

  101. they're always told the same thing.

  102. I,

  103. I said the same thing at the eight o'clock service,

  104. and a man who was going out of the service said,

  105. you know what,

  106. I went to my daughter's high school graduation,

  107. and it's not yours.

  108. And they told my daughter that her class was the best,

  109. and brightest,

  110. and smartest.

  111. So I don't,

  112. you know,

  113. he didn't know what was going on.

  114. Now,

  115. I'm not going to make fun of high school graduations,

  116. and it's definitely better that they say nice things like that

  117. than mean things.

  118. True story.

  119. When I was in my rural parish,

  120. there was a neighboring church,

  121. a few kilometers away,

  122. and the minister had been away on holidays,

  123. and he'd been away for,

  124. like,

  125. for quite a few weeks,

  126. all on the same,

  127. he went to one cottage,

  128. and he went to the same church the whole time.

  129. And when he came back on,

  130. the first Sunday he came back in his sermon,

  131. he said,

  132. gosh,

  133. you guys are such a lousy congregation.

  134. Like,

  135. where I was before,

  136. they give more money,

  137. they work harder,

  138. they keep the church nicer,

  139. they love Jesus more,

  140. they come to the prayer meetings,

  141. and he went on and on and on,

  142. and the sermon ended,

  143. and the whole congregation,

  144. I'm not making this up,

  145. the whole congregation got up and walked out.

  146. Didn't come back.

  147. So,

  148. you know,

  149. it's much better at high school graduations

  150. that they say nice things than bad things.

  151. Okay?

  152. I mean,

  153. they shouldn't really say,

  154. the principal shouldn't say,

  155. I've been a principal for 25 years,

  156. you're the worst class that I've ever,

  157. I've had more problems,

  158. headaches,

  159. sleepless nights with you than anybody else.

  160. He shouldn't say that,

  161. even if it was true.

  162. However,

  163. here's the thing,

  164. at a high school graduation ceremony,

  165. they'll always as well say all these things like,

  166. reach the stars,

  167. you know,

  168. whatever you can do,

  169. do it with all your might,

  170. you know,

  171. and,

  172. you know,

  173. be thankful,

  174. be kind.

  175. In fact,

  176. actually,

  177. if you put up the Bible verse,

  178. you put up the Bible verse,

  179. Andrew,

  180. other than this little bit,

  181. just say it with me,

  182. give thanks in all circumstances,

  183. for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

  184. In fact,

  185. often in ceremonies like that,

  186. they'll actually say something like,

  187. give thanks in all circumstances,

  188. because it'll make you happier,

  189. wiser,

  190. more successful,

  191. more fit,

  192. better looking,

  193. shinier teeth,

  194. I mean,

  195. they don't say all those things,

  196. but you know what I mean.

  197. And they'll often say things like that,

  198. and often in churches and stuff,

  199. when they have a sermon about giving thanks,

  200. it often ends up sounding a little bit like it's a high school graduation ceremony,

  201. that,

  202. you know,

  203. just give thanks,

  204. give thanks,

  205. give thanks,

  206. give thanks,

  207. give thanks,

  208. but here's the problem with that.

  209. The problem is Jesus.

  210. Jesus throws a monkey wrench into all of this talk about give thanks,

  211. and give thanks,

  212. and giving thanks is good for you,

  213. and giving thanks will make you more successful.

  214. Here's the problem.

  215. Jesus throws a huge monkey wrench into that whole way of interpreting give thanks in all circumstances.

  216. You don't believe me?

  217. Turn in your Bibles to Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  218. Luke chapter 18.

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  219. And we're going to look at verse 10 and following and see what Jesus says here.

  220. Luke chapter 18,

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  221. beginning at verse 10.

  222. Luke 18,

    Luke 18:10

  223. verse 10.

  224. And if you don't have your Bible,

  225. and if you don't have your Bible,

  226. and if you don't have your Bible,

  227. you can just listen as I read.

  228. Jesus is talking.

  229. He says,

  230. two men went up into the temple to pray,

  231. one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

  232. The Pharisee standing by himself prayed thus,

  233. God,

  234. I thank you

  235. that I am not like other men,

  236. extortioners,

  237. unjust,

  238. adulterers,

  239. or even like this tax collector.

  240. I fast twice a week.

  241. I give tithes of all that I get.

  242. But the tax collector standing far off,

  243. notice he's not going to be thankful at all.

  244. The tax collector standing far off would not even lift up his eyes to heaven,

  245. but beat his breast saying,

  246. God,

  247. be merciful to me,

  248. a sinner.

  249. And Jesus says,

  250. I tell you,

  251. this man,

  252. the tax collector,

  253. went down to his house justified rather than the other.

  254. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,

  255. but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.

  256. So here's the first thing.

  257. Andrew,

  258. if you could put it up.

  259. Sometimes being thankful shows that we are very far from God.

  260. Sometimes being thankful shows we are very far from God.

  261. I'm going to have a different number.

  262. Like I'm going to have a variety of points up here,

  263. but in some ways,

  264. this is like the thing I'm going to try to show you a little bit about how to

  265. understand that when the Bible text says to give thanks in all circumstances,

  266. that we have to try to understand it in a biblical way so we can put it into

  267. in practice in a biblical way.

  268. And the first thing is that while being thankful is,

  269. good in a right,

  270. in a certain context,

  271. Jesus shows us and tells us that sometimes being thankful shows we are very

  272. far from God.

  273. Put the scripture text up again,

  274. Andrew.

  275. And by the way,

  276. if you want these points,

  277. they'll be on the webpage on Monday if you can't write them down quick enough.

  278. But say this text with me together.

  279. Say it with me.

  280. Give thanks in all circumstances,

  281. for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

  282. Now,

  283. here's the other problem that we have with this text is,

  284. I don't know how many people there are here,

  285. a hundred people.

  286. I don't know what the number is.

  287. I'll figure it out later.

  288. Chances are that some of you are very sad.

  289. Some of you are probably depressed.

  290. Some of you are probably depressed.

  291. Some of you probably feel very empty.

  292. Some of you are struggling with loneliness.

  293. Some of you are struggling with financial problems.

  294. Some of you are all of the above.

  295. And you know,

  296. you hear a Bible text like,

  297. give thanks in all circumstances.

  298. And you think to yourself,

  299. if you think to yourself,

  300. I came into the church depressed.

  301. Now I feel worse.

  302. Because I don't feel thankful at all.

  303. And I don't feel thankful,

  304. and it's hard for me.

  305. And now the Bible tells me

  306. that it's God's will for me to be thankful,

  307. and I don't feel thankful at all.

  308. And inside,

  309. you're saying,

  310. George,

  311. if you knew the financial problems,

  312. if you knew the pain

  313. that I was struggling with right now in my body,

  314. if you knew the constant pain I had,

  315. if God knew that,

  316. he wouldn't say that I should be giving thanks

  317. in all circumstances.

  318. I feel completely and utterly unthankful.

  319. Well,

  320. here's the thing

  321. about hearing this Bible text.

  322. If

  323. the first thing is

  324. to try to tell us that

  325. it's not,

  326. the Bible's not telling us to be like

  327. a boosterism,

  328. like just,

  329. you know,

  330. give thanks,

  331. give thanks,

  332. give thanks,

  333. and it's a key to success.

  334. If that's not what the Bible's saying,

  335. the Bible's also doing something else,

  336. saying something else

  337. which is often missed by Christians.

  338. If you could put the next point up,

  339. Andrew,

  340. it's saying this,

  341. the Bible is not telling me

  342. to feel thankful.

  343. The Bible is not telling me

  344. to feel thankful.

  345. All you depressed people out there,

  346. a little bit of weight

  347. should just come off your shoulders.

  348. Okay?

  349. The Bible is not telling me

  350. to feel thankful.

  351. I'm not denying the Bible.

  352. I'm just trying to clarify,

  353. in fact,

  354. what those few simple words

  355. are actually telling us.

  356. And they're not telling us

  357. to feel anything.

  358. The Bible never tells us

  359. to feel anything,

  360. which is wise,

  361. and the Bible is wise,

  362. because as we all know,

  363. telling somebody

  364. to feel something

  365. basically never works.

  366. In fact,

  367. if you tell somebody

  368. to be more happy,

  369. you know what it usually creates?

  370. Anger.

  371. It doesn't create happiness.

  372. In fact,

  373. unless they get happy

  374. when they're angry,

  375. that's the only way

  376. they're happy.

  377. You know,

  378. they weren't feeling thankful

  379. or happy before.

  380. Now you told them

  381. to be happy,

  382. makes them angry.

  383. They get happy

  384. when they're angry,

  385. so they're happy,

  386. but that's not what you meant,

  387. right?

  388. You don't want to have

  389. angry people get more angry.

  390. And the Bible's not telling us

  391. to feel anything.

  392. If you could put

  393. the Bible text up again,

  394. Andrew,

  395. let's say it together.

  396. Give thanks

  397. in all circumstances,

  398. for this is the will of God

  399. in Christ Jesus

  400. for you.

  401. The Bible

  402. is not all,

  403. it's also not telling us

  404. that we have to be thankful

  405. for every single thing

  406. that happens to us.

  407. The Bible

  408. is not a piece

  409. of Stoic literature.

  410. Those of a certain type

  411. of educational background

  412. will know what Stoics are.

  413. The Bible is not telling us

  414. to be Stoics.

  415. The Bible does not present

  416. a God who's sort of distant

  417. and distant,

  418. maybe very distant,

  419. and now sort of operates

  420. basically by fate,

  421. and we just have to accept

  422. everything that happens.

  423. We don't have to say to God,

  424. okay, God,

  425. thank you for my cancer.

  426. Thank you that I'm bankrupt.

  427. Thank you that I broke my leg.

  428. Thank you that,

  429. you know,

  430. like that country

  431. and western song,

  432. my wife left me,

  433. my dog left me,

  434. you know,

  435. my truck left me,

  436. and everything left me,

  437. and thank you for this, God.

  438. The Bible's not telling us

  439. that we have to give thanks

  440. to God

  441. for everything that happens to us.

  442. Some really terrible things

  443. happen to us,

  444. and it's not our fault,

  445. and some really bad things

  446. happen to us

  447. because it's our fault,

  448. right?

  449. I mean,

  450. for many people,

  451. if you have,

  452. I mean,

  453. I'm not a doctor,

  454. maybe it's for every person.

  455. If you have cirrhosis of the liver,

  456. for many people,

  457. it's because you have

  458. excessive drinking

  459. for a long time,

  460. and you can't say,

  461. God,

  462. thank you so much

  463. for my excessive drinking

  464. for a long time,

  465. and I now have,

  466. that's not what the text

  467. is saying at all.

  468. Here's,

  469. if you put up the point,

  470. Andrew,

  471. here's what the text is saying.

  472. God calls me

  473. to turn to him

  474. and give him thanks

  475. in my circumstances,

  476. not for my circumstances.

  477. That's what the Bible text

  478. is telling us to do.

  479. If we clear away

  480. a little bit

  481. about what the Bible

  482. is not telling us to do,

  483. this is part,

  484. this is the heart

  485. of what the Bible

  486. is telling you

  487. and me to do.

  488. God calls me

  489. to turn to him

  490. and give him thanks

  491. in my circumstances,

  492. not for my circumstances.

  493. It's a very,

  494. very important distinction.

  495. Put the text up again,

  496. Andrew, please,

  497. and say it with,

  498. give thanks

  499. in all circumstances,

  500. for this is the will

  501. of God

  502. in Christ Jesus

  503. for you.

  504. Here's the other thing.

  505. When I was in my

  506. previous church,

  507. one morning I got a call

  508. from a distraught mom

  509. and her,

  510. no,

  511. so it wasn't the mom,

  512. it was the wife,

  513. and her husband

  514. was in jail

  515. and she asked me

  516. if I would go

  517. to visit him in jail.

  518. And it was the first time

  519. I ever went

  520. to visit somebody

  521. in jail.

  522. It was the old jail

  523. in Pembroke.

  524. I don't think

  525. it exists anymore.

  526. And so I went

  527. to see this fellow

  528. in jail.

  529. It was a very memorable time,

  530. not only because

  531. it was the first time

  532. I ever went to jail,

  533. but it was the other thing

  534. that was memorable

  535. was that when I walked

  536. into a certain part

  537. of the jail,

  538. not only was my parishioner

  539. there,

  540. but another parishioner

  541. was there.

  542. And I wish I had a camera

  543. to capture the look

  544. of surprise on his face

  545. when I walked in

  546. because he was trying

  547. to keep it secret

  548. that he was doing

  549. time in jail.

  550. And anyway,

  551. so I go see

  552. my parishioner

  553. and he had a really

  554. hard, terrible time.

  555. It's his own fault.

  556. He woke up

  557. that morning

  558. in the Killaloo

  559. Detention Center

  560. and he didn't know

  561. why he was

  562. in the Killaloo

  563. Detention Center.

  564. He didn't know

  565. what he'd done.

  566. But he woke up

  567. feeling sick

  568. and with a terrible headache.

  569. He knew

  570. the last thing

  571. he could remember

  572. was that he was drinking.

  573. And then he wakes up

  574. and he's in a jail

  575. and he asks the guards

  576. what he's done

  577. and they won't tell him,

  578. but they're not

  579. very friendly to him.

  580. And they drive him

  581. to the Pembroke Jail

  582. and he asks them

  583. time and time again.

  584. He doesn't know

  585. if he's killed somebody.

  586. True story.

  587. He doesn't know

  588. if he's killed somebody.

  589. They drive him

  590. to the jail.

  591. They still don't tell him

  592. what he's done.

  593. It's only when he's

  594. being booked

  595. into the Pembroke Jail

  596. that they tell him

  597. what the charges

  598. were against him.

  599. He'd gotten

  600. ragingly drunk,

  601. crashed his car,

  602. and when the police

  603. came to try

  604. to deal with him,

  605. he was a little

  606. short guy like this,

  607. little scrawny,

  608. short,

  609. hardworking,

  610. working class guy,

  611. and he tried

  612. to take on the cops

  613. and beat them up.

  614. And the cops

  615. were all like this tall

  616. with shoulders like this,

  617. but so he got

  618. overwhelmingly drunk,

  619. smashed up his car,

  620. walked away from it,

  621. started to fight

  622. and kicked

  623. and fought the cops

  624. as hard as he could

  625. until they finally

  626. subdued him,

  627. put him in the car,

  628. passed out,

  629. threw up in the car,

  630. I mean the whole bit.

  631. You can understand

  632. why the cops

  633. didn't want to talk to him.

  634. But he was very subdued

  635. when I met with him.

  636. And here's the thing.

  637. If you could put

  638. the next point up,

  639. Andrew,

  640. here's the thing.

  641. God calls me

  642. to turn to him

  643. and speak to him

  644. and one of the things

  645. I am to do

  646. is to give thanks.

  647. I'll explain why

  648. the Bible text

  649. tells us this.

  650. God calls me

  651. to turn to him

  652. and speak to him

  653. and one of the things

  654. I am to do

  655. is to give thanks,

  656. but it's not the only thing

  657. I am to do.

  658. You see,

  659. that young guy,

  660. if he was to listen

  661. to give thanks

  662. in all circumstances,

  663. he has to turn to God,

  664. he has to say

  665. some things to God,

  666. but he shouldn't

  667. only say thank you.

  668. Right?

  669. He needs to probably say,

  670. dear God,

  671. I really messed up,

  672. I really did wrong things.

  673. Isn't that what he has to say?

  674. I mean,

  675. some of us,

  676. if we're

  677. in a terrible situation,

  678. maybe we're in a terrible

  679. family situation,

  680. and we take this text

  681. to heart,

  682. we're not to say to God,

  683. dear God,

  684. thank you so much

  685. that nobody in my family

  686. will ever talk to me again.

  687. That's not what the Bible

  688. is telling us to say.

  689. One of the things

  690. that we might have to say

  691. is, dear God,

  692. please forgive me

  693. that I am so angry

  694. and unforgiving.

  695. Please help me

  696. with my unforgiveness.

  697. That might be one of the things

  698. we have to say.

  699. You see,

  700. if you put up the text again,

  701. Andrew,

  702. here's the thing,

  703. in the original language,

  704. in English,

  705. they have to translate English,

  706. give thanks in all circumstances

  707. for this is the will of God

  708. in Christ Jesus for you.

  709. In the original language,

  710. the word the isn't there.

  711. It doesn't make any sense

  712. in English,

  713. so they have to add it

  714. in English.

  715. And what it means is,

  716. if the word the was there,

  717. it might mean that literally

  718. in these circumstances,

  719. that's the thing you have,

  720. you always have to be thankful.

  721. Like,

  722. it has to be the substance

  723. of your talk,

  724. the main thing of your talk.

  725. But what this is saying

  726. is that what,

  727. the text is saying

  728. is that you're not giving

  729. thanks to God

  730. for everything that's happened

  731. to you,

  732. but whatever your situation is,

  733. you turn to God

  734. and talk to him

  735. and there's going to be

  736. maybe a whole range of things

  737. that you're going to have to say.

  738. Maybe you're going to have to say,

  739. you know,

  740. forgive me for this

  741. and forgive me for this

  742. and help me with this

  743. and show me this

  744. and give me wisdom about this.

  745. But out of all of the things

  746. that you say,

  747. one of the things

  748. that you must say

  749. is give thanks.

  750. In light of your situation,

  751. but it's not the only thing,

  752. but it's one thing,

  753. it's an important thing

  754. in terms of your relationship

  755. and my relationship with God,

  756. is to give thanks.

  757. You see,

  758. this is really,

  759. really helpful for us.

  760. You know,

  761. the Bible,

  762. just like a brief bit of a thing,

  763. but the Bible tells you

  764. lots of things about,

  765. has a very,

  766. very rich and nuanced

  767. understanding of suffering

  768. and trials

  769. and things like that

  770. that go on in lives.

  771. There's a whole range of stories

  772. and the Bible is very deep

  773. and very,

  774. very wise

  775. and it's,

  776. you can spend your whole life

  777. studying the Bible

  778. and the Bible,

  779. God will continue to speak

  780. into your life

  781. in new ways

  782. as you open the scriptures

  783. and you go from cover to cover.

  784. And,

  785. you know,

  786. sometimes we're in a period

  787. of just things

  788. that are happening to us

  789. or just very bad

  790. and it might just be

  791. that we have to call out to God

  792. and one of the things

  793. that we might have to say to God

  794. is,

  795. Father,

  796. is this happening to me

  797. because I've sinned?

  798. Are these things happening to me

  799. because,

  800. you know,

  801. that I've sinned?

  802. Father,

  803. do I have to come to you

  804. or is it a sin of commission

  805. or a sin of omission?

  806. Father,

  807. please reveal that to me

  808. and Father,

  809. if it is something going on

  810. in my life

  811. that,

  812. you know,

  813. I in a sense am bringing on

  814. because of what I've done,

  815. show it to me,

  816. Father,

  817. and then,

  818. Father,

  819. please help me,

  820. help me to understand,

  821. help me to seek amendment of life

  822. and to say that I'm sorry

  823. or,

  824. or Father,

  825. are you showing me

  826. that,

  827. is this happening to me

  828. because there's something

  829. you want me to know?

  830. Is this happening to me

  831. because there's something

  832. that you want me to become?

  833. Is this happening to me

  834. because there's some new thing

  835. you want me to do

  836. in a new direction in my life

  837. and,

  838. Father,

  839. and here's,

  840. and here's,

  841. you see,

  842. maybe,

  843. so you see all these things,

  844. you pour out your heart to God.

  845. God wants us

  846. in the middle of every situation

  847. and every circumstance

  848. to stop in a sense

  849. at least at one time

  850. during this situation,

  851. this circumstance,

  852. and turn to him

  853. and speak as God.

  854. And in the midst of the range

  855. of questions

  856. and requests

  857. that you say to God,

  858. one of the things,

  859. and,

  860. you know,

  861. in terms of,

  862. it might be this.

  863. You might then have to say something,

  864. Father,

  865. I thank you

  866. that I don't have to deal

  867. with this alone.

  868. I thank you

  869. that you are with me.

  870. I thank you

  871. that you are wise.

  872. I thank you

  873. that you are power.

  874. And I don't,

  875. I don't,

  876. I'm going to try to list

  877. the things

  878. that you're to thank God for.

  879. Pour out your circumstance,

  880. your heart to God

  881. and your circumstance.

  882. And I'm not just giving you

  883. bad things.

  884. It could be good things

  885. as well,

  886. you know,

  887. and it could be good things

  888. to go,

  889. Father,

  890. thank you so much

  891. for blessing me with this.

  892. Father,

  893. please,

  894. please deliver me

  895. from any type of pride

  896. or vanity

  897. or arrogance about this.

  898. But Father,

  899. thank you.

  900. You've been so kind to me.

  901. I'm so thankful for you,

  902. to you,

  903. for what you've done.

  904. So it's not only

  905. just bad situations,

  906. it's in every circumstance

  907. to turn to God.

  908. And you know,

  909. when we're depressed

  910. or we're despondent

  911. or we're in pain

  912. or we're just unbelievably sad

  913. or we're in mourning,

  914. it might be very hard

  915. because we don't feel thankful

  916. to think of what we

  917. can say thank you

  918. to God for.

  919. And that's what is so important

  920. because it calls us

  921. to think about who God is

  922. and what he's done for us.

  923. And often that,

  924. that's very,

  925. very important

  926. because,

  927. you know,

  928. our self is talking to us

  929. and saying all of these things

  930. and in a sense

  931. that God is just saying

  932. that comes a time,

  933. George,

  934. where you've just got to stop

  935. and in a sense

  936. try to shut off

  937. all that conversation

  938. that's coming into your head

  939. and turn and look to me

  940. and think of who I am

  941. and what I've done

  942. and just think of me.

  943. And as you think of me

  944. and as you think of all

  945. of who I am,

  946. I want you to also

  947. be thankful

  948. for some of who I am.

  949. And that's what the Bible

  950. is telling us to do.

  951. If you put up the text again,

  952. oh, sorry,

  953. there,

  954. let's say it together.

  955. Give thanks in all circumstances

  956. for this is the will of God

  957. in Christ Jesus for you.

  958. Now,

  959. what I've just described

  960. of stopping

  961. and giving thanks to God

  962. is always very hard.

  963. Almost always very hard.

  964. It's hard to sustain it.

  965. And the reason is,

  966. if you could put up the point,

  967. here's the reason is,

  968. I am not a God in process.

  969. I am a fallen creature.

  970. In our culture,

  971. it makes worse

  972. something that already goes on

  973. in every one of our souls

  974. and minds

  975. and hearts and wills.

  976. It's easy for us to think

  977. that we are like a God

  978. in process,

  979. but we are not

  980. a God in process.

  981. We are fallen creatures.

  982. I'll give you an example

  983. and then I'll show you

  984. how it fits in

  985. with this text.

  986. One of the common pieces

  987. of advice that you see,

  988. I read lots of novels

  989. and stuff,

  990. read newspapers,

  991. watch movies

  992. and all that.

  993. And one of the very common

  994. things you say,

  995. and I've actually heard

  996. Christians say this

  997. to other Christians,

  998. is that you need to learn

  999. to forgive yourself.

  1000. Okay?

1001. I'm going to shock you all

  1002. right now,

1003. but I'm going to tell you this.

  1004. Don't forgive yourself.

  1005. In fact,

1006. I'm going to make you

  1007. even more shocked.

  1008. Never forgive yourself.

  1009. Never forgive yourself.

1010. Now I got your attention.

  1011. It's completely opposite

1012. of what the world says.

1013. Let me tell you this.

1014. Do it as an experiment.

  1015. Go all the way

  1016. through the Bible.

  1017. Look every time

  1018. that the word forgiveness

  1019. is or forgive

1020. and see if it ever

  1021. in the Bible

1022. tells you to forgive yourself.

  1023. Not once.

  1024. Never tells you

  1025. to do that.

1026. Why doesn't it tell you

  1027. to do that?

  1028. God,

  1029. you're not a God.

  1030. You're not God.

  1031. I don't want to depress you.

  1032. You're not God.

  1033. I'm not God.

  1034. My sin

  1035. is against God

  1036. and against the person

  1037. I've wronged.

1038. And I might have to go

1039. to the person I've wronged

1040. and I might have to ask

  1041. them for forgiveness

  1042. because I've wronged.

  1043. And every act

  1044. of wrongdoing

  1045. against another person

  1046. or against myself

  1047. is also an act

  1048. of wrongdoing

  1049. against God

1050. and I need to get

  1051. his forgiveness.

  1052. I am not a God

  1053. to give myself forgiveness.

  1054. And you see,

1055. this is how it fits in

  1056. with gratitude

  1057. and thankfulness.

  1058. I am not a God.

  1059. I'm not supposed

  1060. to come before God

  1061. and say,

  1062. oh God,

1063. I thank you so much

1064. that I have the right views

  1065. on eschatology.

  1066. I'm not like

  1067. all those foolish,

  1068. fill in the blank,

  1069. premillennialists,

  1070. dispensationalists,

  1071. amillennialists,

  1072. postmillennialists.

  1073. I thank you, God,

1074. that I have the right view

  1075. on abortion.

1076. I have the right view

  1077. on same-sex marriage.

  1078. I give you thanks

  1079. and praise God

1080. that I have the correct views

  1081. on politics.

  1082. And you know,

1083. really all of these things,

  1084. what you're doing

1085. is actually what you're doing

  1086. is congratulating yourself.

1087. And just as the Bible

  1088. doesn't tell us

  1089. to forgive ourselves,

1090. the Bible doesn't tell us

  1091. to congratulate ourselves.

  1092. If we congratulate ourselves,

  1093. it's because we think

  1094. that we're a God

  1095. in process.

  1096. And I don't want

  1097. to depress you,

  1098. but the truth

  1099. is never depressing.

1100. The fact of the matter

  1101. is you and I

  1102. are not gods

  1103. in process.

  1104. Process.

  1105. We are fallen creatures.

  1106. Fallen creatures.

  1107. This has a very

  1108. important consequence,

  1109. but let's look

  1110. at the text again,

  1111. Andrew.

  1112. Put it up, please.

  1113. Say it with me.

  1114. Give thanks

  1115. in all circumstances,

1116. for this is the will

  1117. of God

  1118. in Christ Jesus

  1119. for you.

  1120. What the text

  1121. is saying

  1122. about being,

  1123. about,

  1124. when I said earlier

  1125. that we're not

  1126. a God in process

  1127. but fallen creatures,

  1128. what it's telling us,

  1129. the Bible is,

  1130. it's so deeply

  1131. imbued in the Bible.

  1132. I mean,

  1133. it's taught in

  1134. Genesis chapter 1

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1135. and 2

  1136. and 3,

  1137. but it's so deeply

  1138. throughout the Bible

  1139. that we miss it

  1140. because nothing

  1141. in the Bible

  1142. makes sense without it.

  1143. I could have you

  1144. read Genesis 1 and 2,

1145. but it's all the way

  1146. through the Bible

  1147. that we're creatures.

  1148. We're creatures.

  1149. We're completely

  1150. and utterly dependent.

  1151. I'm dependent

  1152. upon the earth

  1153. spinning on its axis

  1154. at a precise rate.

  1155. I'm dependent

  1156. upon the sun

  1157. spinning around,

  1158. the earth spinning

  1159. around the sun

  1160. at a precise speed.

  1161. I'm dependent

  1162. upon the earth

  1163. being a specific

  1164. distance from the sun.

  1165. I am dependent

  1166. upon air.

  1167. I'm dependent

  1168. upon the chemicals

  1169. in my head

  1170. being correctly balanced.

  1171. I'm dependent

  1172. upon the little neurons

1173. firing in the right order

  1174. in the right way.

  1175. There's not a single thing

  1176. in me

  1177. that is not dependent

  1178. on something else

  1179. and external

  1180. because

  1181. I am a creature

  1182. and so are you.

  1183. And our culture

  1184. wants to make us

  1185. think that we are

  1186. like gods,

  1187. but we're not.

  1188. I'm not.

  1189. You're not.

  1190. I'm a creature.

  1191. In fact,

1192. if you put this up,

1193. one way that we could

  1194. rename ourselves

  1195. as human beings,

  1196. Andrew,

  1197. is to say,

  1198. who am I?

  1199. I am only need.

  1200. That's who I am.

  1201. I'm only need.

  1202. I need oxygen.

  1203. I need food.

  1204. I need water.

  1205. I need my body

  1206. to work right.

  1207. I need the planet

  1208. to spin.

  1209. I need the stars

1210. to be where they are.

  1211. I am only need.

  1212. And who is God?

  1213. What's another name

1214. you could have for God?

  1215. God,

  1216. another name for God

  1217. is never need,

  1218. only give,

  1219. only love.

  1220. It's another name

  1221. for God.

  1222. Never need,

  1223. only give,

  1224. only love.

  1225. God has no environment.

  1226. He has nothing

  1227. that he needs.

  1228. But he only gives

  1229. because he's only love

1230. in it as of the nature

  1231. of love to give.

  1232. And that's why,

  1233. you see,

  1234. when the Bible

  1235. is saying that

  1236. it's to give thanks

  1237. because it's the will

1238. of God in Christ Jesus

  1239. for you,

  1240. it's because it's just

  1241. the Bible's telling us

  1242. not to become

  1243. some type of,

  1244. as I've already said,

  1245. you know,

1246. to feel a certain way

  1247. all the time.

  1248. Drugs make you feel

  1249. the same way

  1250. all the time,

  1251. and drugs ruin you

  1252. if you take drugs

  1253. to make you feel

  1254. the same way

  1255. all the time.

  1256. Right?

  1257. That's what they do.

1258. And it's not telling us

  1259. to be a masochist,

1260. and it's not telling us

  1261. to tell lies,

1262. and it's not telling us

  1263. to be self-congratulatory.

  1264. The Bible's assuming

  1265. that we understand

  1266. that we're creatures

1267. and that we're fallen creatures,

1268. and that who we are

  1269. is only need

  1270. because I am creature.

  1271. And who is God?

  1272. God is never need,

  1273. only give,

  1274. only love.

  1275. That's who God is.

  1276. And so,

  1277. in a sense,

  1278. the deepest sense,

1279. since I am only need

1280. and God is never need,

1281. it means that in truth,

1282. I should be always grateful.

  1283. And there should be

  1284. an almost limitless number

  1285. of things

1286. that I could give thanks for.

  1287. The physicists amongst us

  1288. could literally say

  1289. in their prayers,

  1290. Father,

1291. thank you that the earth is,

  1292. and you actually know

1293. the distance from the sun,

1294. thank you that the earth

1295. is traveling at this speed,

1296. thank you that the earth

  1297. rotates at this rate,

1298. thank you for the ozone layer,

  1299. and scientists could take

  1300. all the scientific stuff

  1301. we know about

1302. what it means to be creatures

  1303. and what it means

1304. to have life on earth,

  1305. and that could be

1306. a list of thanks to God.

1307. Let's say the biblical text

  1308. again together.

  1309. Give with me,

1310. give thanks in all circumstances,

1311. for this is the will of God

1312. in Christ Jesus for you.

1313. My wife is a dog walker,

  1314. she walks her dogs,

  1315. and I'm a runner.

1316. And here's one of the differences

1317. between runners and dog walkers,

  1318. is runners don't talk

  1319. to each other.

1320. I mean, maybe if you have

  1321. a running buddy

1322. and you run with your buddy,

  1323. you talk with that,

  1324. but runners don't talk

  1325. to each other,

  1326. because you're running.

  1327. And actually,

  1328. between trying to fight

  1329. for breath,

  1330. and trying to deal

  1331. with the pain

  1332. all over your body

  1333. from running,

1334. you wouldn't even be able

1335. to have much of a conversation

  1336. anyway,

  1337. because you're trying

1338. to deal with all those things.

1339. But things about dog walkers,

1340. is dog walkers meet each other,

  1341. the dogs,

  1342. you know,

1343. sniff and all that stuff.

1344. And then the people talk.

  1345. So one day,

1346. my wife was telling me

  1347. this afterwards.

1348. She was out walking to the dog.

1349. She met this older lady.

1350. They spent some time talking.

1351. And she was really worried

  1352. about her son,

1353. who was estranged from her.

1354. And not only was her son

  1355. estranged from her,

1356. like not close to her

1357. and sort of ignoring her.

  1358. And I'm not making

  1359. a political comment

1360. on this, by the way.

  1361. I'm just,

  1362. it's just a story,

  1363. a true story.

  1364. So I'm not making

  1365. a political point.

1366. But one of her complaints

  1367. about her son

1368. and worries about her son

  1369. is that he'd become

  1370. very right wing.

  1371. And he viewed himself

  1372. as a self-made man.

1373. And he looked down his nose

  1374. on other people

  1375. who he thought

  1376. didn't work hard enough

  1377. and try hard enough.

1378. And she said to my wife,

  1379. but you know what?

  1380. He grew up

  1381. in a stable,

  1382. secure home

  1383. with books.

  1384. We gave him

  1385. every type of opportunity

  1386. to learn and develop.

1387. We sent him to a really

  1388. good university.

1389. And while he was at

  1390. that good university,

1391. we paid for every penny

  1392. for his tuition,

1393. every penny for his residence,

  1394. every penny for things

  1395. in between school years,

1396. so that he could have

  1397. every opportunity.

1398. And that when he was

  1399. starting out,

  1400. we paid every penny

1401. for him to get set up

  1402. and established.

  1403. And here he thinks

  1404. that he's a self-made man

1405. and looks down his nose

  1406. on people

  1407. who maybe don't have

  1408. much money

  1409. and aren't as successful

  1410. as he is.

  1411. And he thinks

1412. that if they just tried

  1413. like he tried,

  1414. they would be successful.

  1415. And as the woman

  1416. told the story,

  1417. it's a very, very,

1418. and we can understand it.

  1419. But here's the thing.

  1420. In a sense,

  1421. I am,

  1422. you and I

  1423. are that young man,

1424. no longer a young man.

  1425. You and I

  1426. are that man.

  1427. Andrew put up

  1428. the next theory.

  1429. I am completely

  1430. dependent upon God

  1431. and completely estranged

  1432. from God.

  1433. Remember,

  1434. my first point

  1435. was that

  1436. I am not

  1437. a God in process,

  1438. but I am

  1439. a fallen creature.

  1440. and on one hand,

  1441. I am only need

  1442. and God

  1443. is never need,

  1444. only give,

  1445. only love.

  1446. And the great mystery

  1447. of my existence

  1448. is that

  1449. I am completely

  1450. and utterly

  1451. dependent upon God

1452. and yet at the same time

  1453. in my flesh

  1454. I am estranged

  1455. from him.

  1456. God is the one

  1457. who has the neurons

  1458. fire

  1459. and the brain

  1460. work properly

1461. and I use my brain

  1462. to tell him

  1463. to stay out

  1464. of my affairs.

  1465. God is the one

  1466. that gives me

  1467. the will

  1468. and the mind

  1469. to work

  1470. and provides

  1471. an environment

  1472. and maybe has me.

  1473. I could have been

  1474. born in Iraq.

  1475. I could have been

  1476. born in North Korea,

  1477. but I'm born

  1478. here in Canada.

  1479. I had nothing

  1480. to do with that.

  1481. And I have

  1482. all these advantages

1483. and at the same time

  1484. that I receive

  1485. advantage after advantage

  1486. and gift after gift

  1487. and need is met

  1488. after need is met

  1489. and I say,

  1490. God,

  1491. how dare you,

  1492. how dare you

  1493. have those views?

1494. How dare you ask me

  1495. to do this?

  1496. Stay away from me,

  1497. God.

  1498. I'm not interested

  1499. in you, God.

  1500. I don't think

  1501. you exist, God.

  1502. And every single thing

1503. that I do like that,

  1504. even if it's just

  1505. ignoring God,

  1506. I'm dependent

  1507. upon God

  1508. to ignore him.

  1509. And so are you.

  1510. You see,

  1511. that's why

1512. when we turn to God

  1513. in every circumstance,

  1514. in every situation,

  1515. it's not just important

1516. that we turn to God

  1517. in every situation

  1518. and that we say

  1519. a variety of things

  1520. to him,

  1521. but what needs

  1522. to form us

1523. as we turn to him

  1524. is not just

  1525. an acknowledgement

  1526. that God is great

  1527. and that he's full

  1528. of glory,

1529. that God is never need,

  1530. only good,

  1531. only love,

  1532. and that he provides

  1533. for me,

1534. he gives me the gift

  1535. of existence,

  1536. he,

  1537. you couldn't list

  1538. all of the things

  1539. that we're dependent

  1540. upon that God gives,

  1541. but it's not just

  1542. that we do that,

  1543. that would just be

  1544. like deism,

  1545. it's also that I,

  1546. I need to turn

  1547. to him

  1548. in light

  1549. of what God,

  1550. see,

  1551. here's the mystery

  1552. of the gospel,

  1553. that the same God

1554. who even as I am

  1555. estranged from him

  1556. provides me air

  1557. and food

  1558. and just,

  1559. he,

  1560. all of my,

  1561. he just provides

  1562. at the same time

  1563. when I'm estranged

  1564. from him,

  1565. he provides

  1566. for that truth,

  1567. that too,

  1568. and he provides

  1569. it all

  1570. with nothing

  1571. left over,

  1572. with nothing

  1573. added by me.

  1574. In 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 5:9

  1575. 5 verses 9 and 10

  1576. which sort of

  1577. frames this text,

  1578. it says,

  1579. for God has not

  1580. destined us

  1581. for wrath,

  1582. but to obtain

  1583. salvation

  1584. through our Lord

  1585. Jesus Christ

  1586. who died for us

  1587. so that whether

  1588. we are awake

  1589. or asleep

  1590. we might live

  1591. with him.

  1592. And notice

  1593. what it says,

  1594. for God has not

  1595. destined us

  1596. for wrath,

  1597. but to obtain

  1598. salvation.

  1599. salvation.

  1600. It's something

  1601. we receive

  1602. that God

  1603. who gives

  1604. all things,

  1605. he,

  1606. through the death

  1607. of his son

  1608. upon the cross,

  1609. gives salvation

  1610. and it's something

  1611. that I am

  1612. to obtain,

  1613. that I am

  1614. to receive.

  1615. And as the hymn

  1616. said at the beginning,

1617. you might have missed it,

1618. but it's not in part,

  1619. but in whole.

  1620. The salvation

  1621. that God

  1622. is going to give

  1623. is whole

  1624. and complete.

  1625. Why?

  1626. I am

  1627. only need.

  1628. And even

  1629. when I rebel

  1630. against him

  1631. and even

  1632. though I think

  1633. that he doesn't

  1634. exist and I'm

  1635. estranged from him,

  1636. I never am

  1637. anything other

  1638. than only need.

  1639. So even

  1640. salvation

  1641. has to be

  1642. something

  1643. that the one

  1644. who needs

  1645. nothing

  1646. and only

  1647. gives

  1648. and only

  1649. loves,

  1650. he has

  1651. to do it

  1652. all.

  1653. And he does

  1654. it all

  1655. through the gift

  1656. of his son

  1657. who dies

  1658. upon the cross

  1659. that I am

  1660. estranged from him

  1661. and he

  1662. comes to me.

  1663. He crosses

  1664. that infinite

  1665. distance

  1666. that I cannot

  1667. begin to cross

  1668. and he

  1669. comes

  1670. to me.

  1671. and what

  1672. Jesus does

  1673. for me

  1674. on the cross

  1675. is something

  1676. complete and

  1677. utter that God

  1678. does in Jesus

  1679. for me.

  1680. And I

  1681. can only

  1682. obtain it.

  1683. I can only

  1684. receive it.

  1685. I can never

  1686. earn it or

  1687. accomplish it

  1688. or work for it.

  1689. I can never

  1690. be a self

  1691. made man.

  1692. I can only

  1693. receive what

  1694. Jesus does

  1695. on the cross

  1696. because that

  1697. is the means

  1698. by which God

  1699. can give

  1700. salvation.

  1701. And at the end

  1702. of all these

  1703. practical disciples

  1704. disciplines,

  1705. how is the text

  1706. framed verses

  1707. 23 and 24

  1708. to bring the

  1709. point home

  1710. again?

  1711. Now may the

  1712. God of peace

  1713. himself

  1714. sanctify you

  1715. completely

  1716. and may your

  1717. whole spirit

  1718. and soul

  1719. and body

  1720. be kept

  1721. blameless

  1722. at the coming

  1723. of our Lord

  1724. Jesus Christ.

  1725. God keeps it

  1726. blameless.

  1727. God sanctifies.

  1728. He who calls

  1729. you is faithful.

  1730. He will surely

  1731. do it.

  1732. And so it is.

  1733. Whether I'm

  1734. having it

  1735. fantastic

  1736. circumstances

  1737. right now,

  1738. things are going

  1739. really, really

  1740. well, or maybe

  1741. there's things

  1742. that are really

  1743. not going

  1744. very well,

  1745. the Bible

  1746. is inviting

  1747. us in every

  1748. circumstance

  1749. and in every

  1750. situation

  1751. to turn to

  1752. God.

  1753. And as we

  1754. turn to God,

  1755. we're to dwell

  1756. on his greatness

  1757. and his glory.

  1758. And we are to

  1759. dwell on the

  1760. fact that even

  1761. when we are

  1762. estranged,

  1763. Jesus Christ

  1764. crucified is the

  1765. means provided

  1766. by God

  1767. completely,

  1768. utterly,

  1769. thoroughly,

  1770. with nothing

  1771. left over,

  1772. that provides

  1773. the means by

  1774. which I can

  1775. become God's.

  1776. The estrangement

  1777. is removed.

  1778. And all I can

  1779. do is receive it,

  1780. never earn it,

  1781. never attain it,

  1782. never work for it,

  1783. just receive it.

1784. And as I am in

  1785. my circumstances,

  1786. as I'm praying

  1787. about my

  1788. circumstances,

  1789. as I'm asking

  1790. for wisdom,

  1791. as I'm asking

  1792. for help,

  1793. as I'm asking

  1794. for direction,

  1795. as I'm repenting

  1796. in the midst

  1797. of all of these

  1798. things,

  1799. I'm to still

  1800. turn and thank

  1801. him in light

  1802. of his greatness

  1803. and glory and

  1804. in light of what

  1805. his son has done

  1806. for me on the

  1807. cross.

  1808. And here's this

  1809. final thing.

  1810. Let's say the text

  1811. and then I'll show

  1812. you the final point.

  1813. Let's say it

  1814. together.

  1815. Give thanks in

  1816. all circumstances

  1817. for this is the

  1818. will of God in

  1819. Christ Jesus for

  1820. you.

  1821. Here's the thing

  1822. that we are to

  1823. understand when we

  1824. turn to God in

  1825. whatever situation

  1826. we're in.

  1827. If you put it

  1828. up on the screen,

  1829. Andrew,

  1830. God is unchangeably

  1831. wise and powerful.

  1832. Sorry, God is

  1833. unchangeable.

  1834. He's wise and

  1835. powerful, kind and

  1836. good, true and

  1837. loving, wild and

  1838. untamed.

  1839. Who knows what

  1840. he's going to do?

  1841. Can't put him in a

  1842. box, can't tame him,

  1843. can't put him on a

  1844. leash, can't pat him

1845. on the head, say he's

  1846. a good boy.

  1847. And on one hand,

  1848. it's the most

  1849. frightening thing in

  1850. the world to think

  1851. that when you

  1852. turn to God in

  1853. your circumstances

  1854. and your

  1855. situations, you're

  1856. turning to the

  1857. God who has no

  1858. needs and is

  1859. completely and

  1860. utterly wild and

  1861. untamed.

  1862. And our only

  1863. confidence is that

  1864. he's wise and

  1865. powerful, kind and

  1866. good, true and

  1867. loving.

  1868. And that he sent

  1869. his son to die

  1870. upon the cross.

  1871. He himself provides

  1872. all of salvation and

1873. we are to receive it.

  1874. God.

1875. And so it is, that

  1876. is the God and

  1877. that is the context

1878. that we are to turn

  1879. to in every

  1880. circumstance and

  1881. situation.

  1882. And amongst the

  1883. many things we say,

1884. one of them is thank

  1885. you.

  1886. And his greatness and

  1887. his glory and the

  1888. gift of Jesus and

  1889. him being wild and

  1890. untamed is the

  1891. context of our

  1892. thankfulness to him.

  1893. Please stand.

  1894. Let's just bow our

  1895. heads in prayer.

  1896. Father, we give you

  1897. thanks and praise that

  1898. you know every single

  1899. person here in this

1900. room and you know us

  1901. completely and utterly

  1902. perfectly.

  1903. We thank you,

  1904. Father, that you

  1905. know, not only do

1906. you see the mask we're

  1907. wearing right now, you

  1908. know every mask we

  1909. have in our arsenal.

  1910. You know how, you

1911. know even the way we

1912. go from mask to mask

  1913. to mask to mask.

  1914. You see every mask,

  1915. every maneuver, and

1916. you see us as we

  1917. really are.

  1918. You see us, Father,

1919. and you know even the

1920. dreams at night that we

  1921. don't remember.

1922. Father, you know all of

  1923. those.

  1924. You know us perfectly.

1925. And still you love us.

1926. And still you sent your

1927. son to die upon the

  1928. cross for us.

  1929. And still, Father, when

1930. we come to Jesus and

  1931. accept him as our

  1932. Savior and Lord and

  1933. receive what he has

1934. done for us, what only

  1935. you can accomplish and

  1936. what you accomplish in

  1937. your son.

  1938. Father, we thank you

  1939. for this.

1940. We thank you for it.

1941. And we ask, Father, that

  1942. your Holy Spirit would

1943. move and work deeply in

1944. our lives so that in

  1945. every circumstance and

  1946. situation that we would

1947. pause and turn to you

1948. and that we would dwell on

  1949. your greatness, that we

  1950. would dwell on your

  1951. glory, that we would

  1952. dwell on your wisdom,

1953. and we would dwell on

  1954. your power, and we

1955. would dwell on what your

1956. son did for us on the

1957. cross, what he won for

1958. us on the cross, and

1959. what you offer us through

  1960. the cross and through

  1961. your son.

1962. And, Father, we ask that

1963. that would form us as we

1964. turn to you and talk to

  1965. you.

1966. And in all of our pouring

1967. out of our heart to you,

1968. Father, and we ask that

1969. you would teach us and

1970. help us to pour out our

  1971. heart to you.

1972. We ask as well, Father,

1973. that we would give you

  1974. thanks in our different

  1975. circumstances.

  1976. Father, make us a

  1977. prayerful people.

  1978. Make us disciples gripped

1979. by the gospel, living for

  1980. your glory.

1981. And this we ask in Jesus'

  1982. name.

  1983. Amen.

1984. Please take a posture of

1985. prayer as we enter into a

  1986. time of intercession.

1987. As we enter this time of

1988. prayer, please feel free to

  1989. take whatever position helps

1990. you to communicate with God

  1991. our Father.

  1992. Heavenly Father, Lord Jesus,

  1993. precious Holy Spirit, our

  1994. wonderful triune God, we

1995. praise and thank you for your

1996. love and care for us.

1997. As our country prepares to

1998. celebrate our national day, we

1999. praise and thank you for our

2000. temporal home here in Canada

2001. and all the freedoms we

  2002. enjoy.

2003. We pray that you will bless all

  2004. our leaders, federal,

  2005. provincial, and municipal, and

2006. that you grant them open and

2007. willing hearts to seek your

2008. will for the good of all.

2009. Bless and keep those in all the

2010. services, both at home and

2011. abroad, whose role it is to

2012. keep us safe from harm.

2013. And help us to choose

  2014. gratitude, especially for our

  2015. salvation.

  2016. Let us pray.

2017. Dear God, may the leaders of the

  2018. nations rule with righteousness

  2019. and may they...
