  1. Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would first do a work in us.

  2. May your Holy Spirit fall upon us and do a work within us

  3. so that we might use the best of our mind and the best of our heart

  4. and the best of our will to think upon your word and to receive your word.

  5. But Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would do a second and deeper work within us

  6. to humble us so that we will know, Father, that the best of our mind and heart and will

  7. is never enough, that we are dependent upon you to move and work and act in our lives,

  8. for you to bring your word deeply into us to form us.

  9. So, Father, we ask for this double work of your Holy Spirit.

  10. Father, please have your Holy Spirit poured out upon us and deep within us.

  11. Make us good soil so that your word will come into our lives

  12. and bear much fruit in our lives for your glory.

  13. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  14. Please be seated.

  15. Our service has a bit of a different...

  16. The sermon always has a bit of a structure for this current series.

  17. Usually, the rest of the year, we'd be looking at bigger chunks of the Bible week in, week out.

  18. It would be the text that one of either myself or the other reader would read.

  19. But we're just looking at every week just a very, very short verse.

  20. And so, just to see it in context, I ask you to get your Bibles out.

  21. I'm going to read the text now that we're going to look at.

  22. And I'll start a bit earlier so you get the context.

  23. And then I'll sort of point out the part that we're going to look at this morning.

  24. So, if you have your Bibles, please turn in them to 1 Thessalonians 5, verses 9 to 21.

    1 Thessalonians 5:9–21

  25. If you've forgotten your Bible, there's always some Bibles here at the front,

  26. which you're welcome to use and or to keep afterwards if you'd like.

  27. And here's how the scripture text goes.

  28. 1 Thessalonians 5, verses 9 to 21.

    1 Thessalonians 5:9–21

  29. And by the way, this is all part of a series entitled Practical Discipleship.

  30. And today we're going to talk about choosing to listen to God.

  31. Choosing to listen to God.

  32. And here's the text.

  33. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  34. who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep,

  35. that means either alive or dead, it's a metaphor,

  36. we might live with him.

  37. That's with Jesus.

  38. Therefore, encourage one another and build one another up just as you are doing.

  39. We ask you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you

  40. and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,

  41. and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.

  42. Be at peace among yourselves.

  43. And we urge you, brothers and sisters,

  44. admonish the disorderly,

  45. encourage the faint-hearted,

  46. help the weak,

  47. be patient with them all,

  48. see that no one repays anyone evil for evil,

  49. but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

  50. Rejoice always,

  51. pray without ceasing,

  52. give thanks in all circumstances,

  53. for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

  54. Do not quench the Holy Spirit.

  55. Do not despise prophecies.

  56. But test everything.

  57. Hold fast what is good.

  58. This is the word of the Lord.

  59. Thanks be to God.

  60. And the text that we're going to be looking at today

  61. is those last few words which I read,

  62. verses 19, 20, and 21.

  63. Do not quench the Holy Spirit.

  64. Do not despise prophecies.

  65. But test everything.

  66. Hold fast what is good.

  67. Now I'm going to do something unusual in my sermon today.

  68. I'm going to let you know where I hope we end up.

  69. You know,

  70. there used to be a joke that a three-point sermon was,

  71. I'm going to tell you what I'm going to say,

  72. and I'm going to say what I'm going to say,

  73. and then I'm going to tell you what I just said.

  74. And that was sort of a three-point sermon.

  75. And I'm not quite doing that,

  76. but I want to,

  77. Jeremy,

  78. if you could put it up,

  79. I want,

  80. by the end of the sermon,

  81. to have us be able to say this prayer together

  82. or have the Holy Spirit convict many of us

  83. to want to pray a prayer like this

  84. and to study something like this

  85. and pray something like this every day,

  86. that what this prayer describes as a reality

  87. would become more and more and more a reality in our lives.

  88. And so,

  89. sorry,

  90. I want to end up with this

  91. is that we would be able to say something like,

  92. dear God,

  93. please help me to listen to you every day

  94. as I humbly read your word written.

  95. Please help me to pray every day

  96. for your guidance and your wisdom.

  97. Please help me to listen for your answer.

  98. Please help me to dwell on your word written

  99. in the company of your people

  100. as I prayerfully consider your personal word to me.

  101. As I hear you,

  102. please help me to trust you

  103. and put your word into action.

  104. Please help me to do all things for your glory.

  105. In Jesus' name,

  106. Amen.

  107. Now,

  108. it sounds like a very simple prayer.

  109. And,

  110. you know,

  111. with any of these things,

  112. if I was to preach the same sermon,

  113. maybe several times,

  114. I could probably make the language a little bit better.

  115. But here's the problem.

  116. On one hand,

  117. we can all say,

  118. George,

  119. I understand that.

  120. Yes,

  121. amen,

  122. sign me up.

  123. I'll pray it.

  124. And let's go on and get on with the rest of the service.

  125. Maybe sing a few more praise songs

  126. or something like that.

  127. But here's the problem.

  128. The problem is both within the church

  129. and outside of the church.

  130. Quite a few years ago,

  131. there was a person who had a connection

  132. to many people in our church.

  133. And I was sort of drawn into it.

  134. And people in my congregation,

  135. in this congregation,

  136. were very excited

  137. because she had very powerful prophetic gifts.

  138. And I,

  139. they brought me to meet her.

  140. And first,

  141. they were telling me all of the things

  142. that she was saying,

  143. you know,

  144. the prophetic gifts and words

  145. that she was bringing into the congregation.

  146. And I went to meet her.

  147. And here's the problem.

  148. The very,

  149. very first thing that I thought

  150. when I met her

  151. was that she was mentally ill.

  152. And

  153. this,

  154. this was problematic.

  155. I don't know what you,

  156. where you are,

  157. but

  158. for my more charismatically inclined friends

  159. that were listening to her,

  160. they had a lot of suspicion

  161. that Anglicans don't believe in prophecy.

  162. In fact,

  163. Anglicans don't really believe God speaks it.

  164. In fact,

  165. Anglicans don't even believe the Bible.

  166. So I was very,

  167. very,

  168. I was very conscious

  169. that if I was to be hesitant

  170. or try to speak a little bit

  171. about what might be going on here,

  172. that they would very quickly dismiss me.

  173. At the same time,

  174. I was also very aware

  175. that the fact that,

  176. you know,

  177. God's an,

  178. God is an untamed God.

  179. His character is completely

  180. and utterly rock solid certain.

  181. But God doesn't just stay

  182. according to our categories.

  183. He doesn't work through committees.

  184. In fact,

  185. most of the times

  186. in the New Testament

  187. or the Old Testament

  188. where there's a committee giving advice,

  189. the advice is usually wrong.

  190. And so,

  191. but we tend to think

  192. that God speaks through institutions

  193. or committees

  194. or we're more comfortable with that.

  195. But, you know,

  196. God,

  197. you know,

  198. if you read the Old Testament,

  199. God's prophets

  200. do all sorts of wild and crazy things.

  201. So I have to be careful.

  202. I don't want to limit God.

  203. On the other hand,

  204. there's things about this person

  205. that make me believe

  206. that she in fact

  207. is having a psychotic incident

  208. and that she's mentally ill.

  209. And it's very,

  210. very difficult.

  211. I don't want to quench

  212. the Holy Spirit.

  213. I don't want to despise prophecies.

  214. But on the other hand,

  215. just because somebody says

  216. they're speaking from God

  217. doesn't mean they are.

  218. And on the other hand,

  219. we all know of different people

  220. who really just do

  221. completely and utterly

  222. deny the fact

  223. that God can speak

  224. into individual lives

  225. in a fresh way today.

  226. So how do we sort of balance that?

  227. How is it that we hear

  228. this word of the Scripture?

  229. Do you want to put

  230. the Bible passage up for us,

  231. Andrew?

  232. Just say it with me.

  233. Do not quench the Spirit.

  234. Do not despise prophecies.

  235. But test everything.

  236. Hold fast what is good.

  237. So, you know,

  238. within the church,

  239. how do we sort of

  240. handle this text

  241. when, you know,

  242. there's some problems

  243. with this text, right?

  244. And we all know

  245. other types of...

  246. I mean, when I was

  247. a younger man,

  248. one of my early...

  249. in my early Christian years,

  250. a fellow who became

  251. a Christian around

  252. the same time as myself,

  253. he got involved

  254. in a church

  255. that ended up

  256. getting really...

  257. I mean, it was a very,

  258. very controlling church

  259. that believed in shepherding,

  260. that the elder

  261. or several of the elders

  262. got words from God

  263. and they would tell

  264. these words from God

  265. to the different people

  266. in the congregation

  267. and basically control

  268. all of the decisions

  269. that these people made

  270. and, in fact,

  271. even controlled them

  272. so that they would have

  273. very little contact

  274. with outside Christian groups.

  275. It was a very power-hungry

  276. and abusive situation

  277. and I was very concerned

  278. for my friend

  279. and eventually,

  280. after a couple of years

  281. of putting up with this,

  282. they finally crossed a line

  283. and his normal common sense

  284. came to bear.

  285. But it scarred him

  286. for many years

  287. in terms of believing

  288. that God would speak

  289. prophetically

  290. or speak into people's lives

  291. because of the abuse of power,

  292. the appearance of wisdom

  293. and discipleship-making power

  294. of this guy.

  295. It just deeply confused him

  296. for a long time.

  297. But outside of the church,

  298. we have problems as well.

  299. It really became evident,

  300. actually,

  301. in a funny way

  302. that God works.

  303. That God works.

  304. When I was in the Starbucks

  305. yesterday trying to put

  306. the finishing touches

  307. to my sermon

  308. and early on in my time,

  309. a fellow came along beside me

  310. and asked me what I'm doing.

  311. He's a regular person

  312. that I talk to

  313. and he saw that I'm reading the Bible.

  314. I'm going to do a sermon

  315. on prophecies, etc.

  316. And he said,

  317. George,

  318. you know,

  319. he didn't say you're guys

  320. like you were a joke,

  321. but you could tell

  322. that's what he thought,

  323. you know.

  324. He said,

  325. come on, George.

  326. Like there's all these prophets

  327. out there in the world

  328. and there's all these people

  329. saying all these different things

  330. and, you know,

  331. Islam says it's a prophetic word

  332. from God

  333. and Mormons say that

  334. and you say that.

  335. Why on earth

  336. do you ever possibly believe

  337. that your word

  338. is the correct one?

  339. Like why on earth

  340. would you ever possibly believe that?

  341. Like the whole idea

  342. is absurd.

  343. At the same time,

  344. he would tell me

  345. about how the fact is

  346. that the human race,

  347. as you can see,

  348. he said in countries

  349. like Canada,

  350. United States,

  351. it's evolving

  352. and moving to a new level.

  353. It's moving to a new type

  354. of reality

  355. where institutional religion

  356. has no power,

  357. where people can be spiritual

  358. without being in those

  359. types of connections

  360. and this is just the way

  361. things are moving, George.

  362. This is the future

  363. and you should get

  364. with the program.

  365. And shortly after that,

  366. there was another fellow

  367. came in and sat

  368. in a different spot.

  369. I'd never seen him before,

  370. but he noticed

  371. that I was reading a Bible.

  372. I could tell that he noticed

  373. that I was reading a Bible

  374. and I could hear him

  375. sort of go up.

  376. As he passed me

  377. and he sat directly

  378. in front of me

  379. and he opened like this

  380. and put down a magazine

  381. that said skeptical thinking.

  382. And he'd continue

  383. for the,

  384. I was there longer

  385. than he was.

  386. He'd keep looking over at me

  387. and I could,

  388. he didn't say harumph

  389. every time,

  390. but I could tell

  391. that he was,

  392. the eyeballs kept hitting

  393. the top of the,

  394. of the,

  395. of his skull

  396. and he was saying harumph.

  397. He was reading skeptical thinking.

  398. I was reading the Bible.

  399. At the same time,

  400. not in this particular day,

  401. but just within

  402. the last week or two,

  403. I was talking to another person

  404. once again in Starbucks.

  405. I wouldn't talk to anybody

  406. if I wasn't in Starbucks.

  407. No, I'll talk to you.

  408. I promise.

  409. You don't have to meet me

  410. in Starbucks

  411. for me to talk to you.

  412. But, you know,

  413. this particular barista

  414. is always listening

  415. to different types

  416. of prophecies

  417. and prophetic words

  418. about the future,

  419. all from completely

  420. non-Christian sources.

  421. So here's the problem.

  422. When we have,

  423. say this text with me again.

  424. Do not quench the spirit.

  425. Do not despise prophecies,

  426. but test everything.

  427. Hold fast what is good.

  428. So how do we listen

  429. to this text?

  430. How do we learn from it?

  431. What is it that the text is saying

  432. when we live on one hand

  433. in a world

  434. where many people

  435. will just completely

  436. and utterly dismiss

  437. this idea whatsoever

  438. in differing types of ways,

  439. not always dismissing it

  440. in the same way.

  441. And within the church,

  442. on one hand,

  443. we realize that sometimes

  444. there's great abuses

  445. to text like this.

  446. So what is it

  447. that we have to do?

  448. How do we understand

  449. all of this?

  450. Well, here's the first thing

  451. that we need to understand.

  452. If you could put the point up.

  453. I'll get my glasses

  454. so I can read it.

  455. Actually, I can see it up there.

  456. It is deeply human

  457. to want to hear

  458. the voice of God

  459. and it is deeply human

  460. to want to silence

  461. the voice of God.

  462. It is deeply human

  463. to want to hear

  464. the voice of God

  465. and it is deeply human

  466. to want to silence

  467. the voice of God.

  468. Many of you know

  469. from your own experience

  470. how this is true

  471. at a very, very simple level.

  472. How many of us

  473. come into a situation

  474. and we call out to God

  475. and we wish that

  476. he would just give us

  477. the word

  478. to say in this situation?

  479. And sometimes he does

  480. and sometimes we leave

  481. disappointed.

  482. Yet at the same time,

  483. and unless I'm just

  484. vastly more wicked

  485. than the rest of you,

  486. how many times

  487. are we proceeding

  488. on a course of action

  489. and it almost seems

  490. as if God is telling us

  491. not to do it

  492. and we tell him

  493. to be quiet?

  494. Or we realize

  495. that we're doing

  496. a particular course of action

  497. and it's almost as if

  498. we hear God speaking to us

  499. to do something,

  500. to maybe call somebody up

  501. and we don't do it.

  502. We don't want him

  503. to interfere

  504. with what we're doing.

  505. And so if Christians

  506. are honest within themselves,

  507. they understand

  508. that it's deeply human

  509. to want to hear

  510. the voice of God.

  511. We might think

  512. it's just a spiritual thing,

  513. it's just a thing

  514. for those who are Christians,

  515. but I think the Bible teaches

  516. that it's not just

  517. a Christian thing,

  518. that it's a deeply human thing

  519. to want to hear

  520. the voice of God

  521. and it's deeply human

  522. to want to silence

  523. the voice of God.

  524. I mean, you go into chapters

  525. and the wide range of things

  526. on Wicca,

  527. on different New Age spiritualities

  528. are all different ways

  529. in a sense to connect

  530. to the divine.

  531. You know, even,

  532. and this is,

  533. I'd have a hard time,

  534. and I'm just going to say it

  535. to you very briefly

  536. and you might have to

  537. puzzle about it

  538. to get your mind around it,

  539. but in effect,

  540. often a lot of university studies

  541. and a lot of things

  542. which are believed

  543. in newspapers,

  544. which are all very,

  545. very secular,

  546. without them realizing it,

  547. what they're believing

  548. is a secular prophetic word.

  549. And I'll explain

  550. what I mean by this.

  551. In fact,

  552. I'm not making

  553. a political comment here

  554. because it's a bit,

  555. it sounds a bit political

  556. in our current context,

  557. but it's a bigger type

  558. of problem.

  559. That many people

  560. think they understand

  561. where history is going

  562. and that history

  563. is going to a particular place.

  564. And whether it's going

  565. to be a classless society,

  566. whether it's going

  567. to be a place

  568. of complete sexual liberation,

  569. whether it's going

  570. to be a place

  571. which is portrayed

  572. in all of the Star Trek movies,

  573. that basically our politics

  574. and our secular humanism

  575. and our technology

  576. and our technique

  577. has caused,

  578. has solved all human problems

  579. and human wars,

  580. or whether it's

  581. a classless society,

  582. whatever it is,

  583. whenever we have this sense,

  584. whether it's through capitalism

  585. or whether it's

  586. through technology

  587. or whether it's

  588. in terms of social processes

  589. or social movements,

  590. that history is going

  591. inevitably in a particular direction

  592. and we know that,

  593. only God could know that.

  594. And so a Karl Marx

  595. is a secular prophet.

  596. Without us realizing it,

  597. he's making a claim

  598. of a type of knowledge

  599. that only God

  600. could possibly have.

  601. And much of what passes

  602. for wisdom in the newspapers,

  603. much of what passes

  604. for wisdom in politics,

  605. is in fact a belief

  606. that they know

  607. the voice of God.

  608. And they know

  609. what God is calling

  610. human beings to do

  611. and they know

  612. where God is calling

  613. human beings

  614. to develop into.

  615. One of my friends

  616. that I was talking

  617. about yesterday,

  618. in fact even in his language

  619. about how human beings

  620. are evolving

  621. and how human beings

  622. are changing

  623. and where history is going.

  624. I mean on one level,

  625. and we didn't have a chance

  626. to talk about this,

  627. on one hand,

  628. he dismisses

  629. the scripture text,

  630. but he believes

  631. he has some prophetic knowledge

  632. which has come

  633. from the editorial pages

  634. of the Ottawa Citizen

  635. or the New York Times

  636. or from some professor

  637. that he had

  638. when he was in university.

  639. I'm not saying this

  640. to dismiss him,

  641. by the way,

  642. and I apologize

  643. if I sound like

  644. I'm dismissing it.

  645. I'm just saying

  646. that in fact,

  647. on one hand,

  648. within our culture,

  649. we want to hear

  650. and hear the voice of God

  651. and in a sense

  652. be able to act

  653. on the voice of God,

  654. yet at the same time,

  655. we want to be able

  656. to say to God,

  657. you can't speak into this.

  658. How dare you try

  659. to speak into this?

  660. How dare you try

  661. to impose these types

  662. of limits on me?

  663. Even the whole move

  664. for many of our culture

  665. who are very deeply attracted

  666. by being spiritual

  667. but not religious,

  668. you know,

  669. partly it is

  670. that they still want

  671. to be able to hear

  672. from God,

  673. but they also don't want

  674. to hear from God.

  675. You see,

  676. the Bible teaches

  677. that it's deeply human

  678. to want to hear

  679. the voice of God

  680. and it's deeply human

  681. to want to silence

  682. the voice of God.

  683. If you go back later on

  684. and read Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  685. 2, and 3,

  686. you capture in a nutshell

  687. the beginning

  688. of the grand narrative

  689. of the Bible

  690. and that's what

  691. the grand narrative

  692. of the Bible teaches us.

  693. That in Genesis 1 and 2,

  694. it's taught to us

  695. that God creates us

  696. and he makes us

  697. in his image

  698. and in his likeness

  699. that every human being

  700. bears the image

  701. and likeness

  702. of the living God

  703. and so it is

  704. that there's this

  705. natural thing

  706. as me a creature

  707. and to know my creator

  708. that I bear the image

  709. and likeness of God

  710. and so do you

  711. and that that

  712. which is within me

  713. which bears the image

  714. and likeness of God

  715. that it longs

  716. to commune

  717. to that which is

  718. it is an image of.

  719. And we see

  720. at the beginning

  721. of Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  722. and the end of chapter 2

  723. that God

  724. God made human beings

  725. to converse with him

  726. and to have communion

  727. with him

  728. and so because

  729. we always bear

  730. the image

  731. and likeness of God

  732. there is this

  733. always draw and pull

  734. to that which we image

  735. and to the creator himself

  736. and then in Genesis 3

  737. we see that as human beings

  738. in the person of Adam

  739. and Eve

  740. that they choose

  741. to be like God

  742. as God themselves

  743. to supplant God

  744. to become not

  745. not only God's equal

  746. but maybe even God's superior

  747. to be like God themselves

  748. that the human race

  749. becomes bent

  750. and the image of God

  751. within us

  752. is not completely removed

  753. it isn't completely

  754. cut out of us

  755. it now becomes

  756. something which is bent

  757. and in Genesis 3

  758. it's told

  759. in a very very powerful story

  760. that now human beings

  761. well on one hand

  762. they want to hide from God

  763. and now when they speak to God

  764. their speech is bent

  765. it's filled with blaming

  766. and they feel uncomfortable

  767. standing before God

  768. because of their nakedness

  769. and death enters

  770. into human affairs

  771. and different types of bondage

  772. enters into human affairs

  773. and so we see

  774. that at a very very fundamental level

  775. that human beings

  776. that exist now

  777. that desire to speak with God

  778. and to hear God

  779. is always there

  780. it doesn't matter who you are

  781. there is that desire

  782. to commune and know with God

  783. and at the same time

  784. there is this desire

  785. to silence God

  786. it's a human thing

  787. it's a human issue

  788. a human issue

  789. that the Bible

  790. I think more wisely

  791. than any other system of thought

  792. accounts for

  793. why it is

  794. that in an age like ours

  795. with science

  796. and all of that

  797. there is still such an interest

  798. in alternative spiritualities

  799. and astrology

  800. and all sorts of other things

  801. that on one hand

  802. don't fit with science

  803. and are completely contradictory to it

  804. yet we hold both

  805. the Bible makes clear

  806. it is deeply human

  807. to want to hear the voice of God

  808. and it is deeply human

  809. to want to silence

  810. the voice of God

  811. let's put the scripture text up again

  812. Jeremy

  813. say it with me

  814. do not quench the spirit

  815. do not despise prophecies

  816. but test everything

  817. hold fast what is good

  818. so here's the

  819. here's the

  820. here's the problem

  821. some people will say

  822. I've had many many people

  823. say to me

  824. well George

  825. you know

  826. here's the problem

  827. George

  828. you know all these gods

  829. that say things to you

  830. and then people have wars

  831. over these gods

  832. and they think they're better

  833. than other people

  834. because they hear the word of God

  835. and

  836. but George

  837. don't you actually think

  838. that

  839. I mean

  840. the high

  841. like even George

  842. your own mystics

  843. Christian mystics

  844. sometimes talk

  845. as if the highest type

  846. of union with God

  847. is completely and utterly

  848. speechless and wordless

  849. doesn't George

  850. even your own tradition

  851. sometimes teach

  852. that the highest form

  853. of spirituality

  854. is a form of silent union

  855. with God

  856. where there are no words

  857. George

  858. don't you think

  859. it's actually

  860. probably far

  861. just far more helpful

  862. given the problem

  863. that words

  864. supposedly from God

  865. have come in the human race

  866. to think that

  867. the real God

  868. that does exist

  869. must be a God

  870. that's a wordless God

  871. that's just

  872. like that God

  873. is everything

  874. that God is in you

  875. or in me

  876. that God is just

  877. like this energy

  878. which unites

  879. and brings people together

  880. it's like a force

  881. that brings people

  882. together

  883. and that's a far

  884. higher form of God

  885. and it's a very

  886. very common belief

  887. but here's what

  888. the Bible is telling us

  889. if you could put up

  890. the next point

  891. and I think that

  892. reason tells us this

  893. a God that cannot speak

  894. cannot be God

  895. the true and living God

  896. speaks and listens

  897. and acts

  898. a God that cannot speak

  899. cannot be God

  900. the true and living God

  901. speaks and listens

  902. and acts

  903. if I was to try

  904. telling my wife

  905. that I was no longer

  906. going to talk to her

  907. because we were going

  908. to just have

  909. wordless communion

  910. because that's higher

  911. well hopefully she'd just

  912. laugh and say

  913. George stop being silly

  914. you can try stop

  915. talking to me

  916. but I'm not going

  917. to stop talking to you

  918. and she'd be wise

  919. to say something like that

  920. you know in fact

  921. there are times

  922. in a couple

  923. that you know

  924. whether it's a married

  925. couple or a couple

  926. dating or just a couple

  927. of very very good friends

  928. where they can

  929. enjoy a very very

  930. silent time

  931. of communion

  932. with each other

  933. but those silent

  934. times of communion

  935. are built upon words

  936. the fact of the matter

  937. is is if we were

  938. to watch a science fiction movie

  939. and we were to be invited

  940. to some type of

  941. higher form of being

  942. and that's what

  943. everybody tells us

  944. and it can't

  945. it can't do anything

  946. or say anything

  947. it can't even communicate

  948. directly into our minds

  949. we would all

  950. we would all think

  951. and the viewers

  952. would all think

  953. well why is that

  954. higher than us

  955. it can't even speak

  956. if it can't even speak

  957. how can it be higher than

  958. or in a different type

  959. of science fiction movie

  960. if there's some

  961. creature that comes

  962. to earth

  963. to devour us

  964. and do all these things

  965. and it can't speak

  966. it might be something

  967. that we're afraid of

  968. it might be something

  969. that we have to fight

  970. but who would think

  971. that it's higher than us

  972. if it can't even speak

  973. and if we understand this

  974. at just a sort of

  975. a very very practical level

  976. then why is it

  977. that we would think

  978. that a God

  979. that can't speak

  980. or listen

  981. or act

  982. how could that God

  983. be higher than us

  984. and if it's not higher

  985. than us

  986. how could it be God

  987. one of the things

  988. that if you go back

  989. and read the Old Testament

  990. one of the things

  991. which is a regular comment

  992. of the Old Testament

  993. prophets about idols

  994. is they can't speak

  995. it's a sign

  996. that they

  997. aren't real

  998. Isaiah has a very very funny

  999. inviting comment

  1000. about a guy

1001. who goes out into the woods

1002. and he cuts down a tree

1003. and part of the tree

  1004. he uses

  1005. to make a fire

  1006. so he could eat

  1007. and the other part

  1008. of the tree

1009. he turns into an idol

  1010. and he bows down

  1011. and worships it

  1012. to give him thanks

  1013. for everything

  1014. without the person

  1015. realizing that

  1016. one moment

1017. you cut the tree down

  1018. you made the idol

1019. why are you now praying to it

1020. and why are you bowing down to it

  1021. so

  1022. maybe our atheist friends

  1023. are correct

1024. and there is no God

  1025. maybe they are correct

  1026. I think they're wrong

1027. but maybe they are correct

1028. and there is no God

  1029. but surely common sense

  1030. and the Bible

  1031. teaches us

1032. that if what we think

  1033. is God

  1034. can't speak

1035. it surely can't be God

  1036. we need to look

  1037. somewhere else

  1038. for God

  1039. and the Bible teaches

  1040. that the true

  1041. and living God

  1042. that truly lives

  1043. and truly exists

  1044. is a God

  1045. who speaks

  1046. he is a God

  1047. who listens

  1048. he is a God

  1049. who acts

  1050. if you go back

  1051. later on

  1052. and read

  1053. 1 Thessalonians 5

  1054. 9 to 21

  1055. and you'll see

  1056. that just before

  1057. this part here

  1058. which is all about

  1059. listening to God

  1060. the three verses prior

  1061. and we spent

  1062. three Sundays on it

  1063. you can go back

1064. and listen to the sermons

  1065. are all about

  1066. us speaking to God

  1067. and if we

  1068. if we can speak

  1069. to God

  1070. if the Bible

  1071. is telling us

  1072. to speak to God

  1073. it not only implies

  1074. that he can hear

  1075. and understand

  1076. but it definitely

  1077. implies that he

  1078. can speak to us

  1079. and so after

  1080. three texts

  1081. which tell us

  1082. to speak to God

  1083. speak to God

  1084. speak to God

  1085. now we have

  1086. a Bible text

  1087. saying to us

  1088. listen to the God

  1089. who speaks

  1090. the true and living

  1091. God speaks

  1092. and listens

  1093. and acts

  1094. put the Bible

  1095. passage up again

  1096. please Jeremy

  1097. let's say it together

  1098. do not quench

  1099. the spirit

  1100. do not despise

  1101. prophecies

  1102. but test everything

  1103. hold fast

  1104. what is good

  1105. now some of you

  1106. might be saying

  1107. okay George

  1108. I'm a little bit

  1109. confused

  1110. you're still missing

  1111. the sort of

  1112. the point

  1113. that that fellow

  1114. in Starbucks

  1115. gave you

  1116. that you know

  1117. it sounds awfully

  1118. narrow

  1119. to just think

  1120. that only your

  1121. God speaks

  1122. why doesn't

  1123. all the other

  1124. you know

  1125. all the other

  1126. there's lots

  1127. of other religions

  1128. and you know

  1129. is you know

  1130. is Muslims

  1131. believe that Muhammad

  1132. God spoke to Muhammad

  1133. directly

  1134. and Mormons

  1135. believe that

  1136. that God

  1137. brought these

  1138. books

  1139. to Joseph Smith

  1140. like what

  1141. like George

  1142. what do you do

  1143. with that

  1144. well there's

  1145. several things

  1146. that we do

  1147. and the first

  1148. thing is this

  1149. if you put

  1150. the point up

  1151. Jeremy

  1152. since humans

  1153. speak as God

  1154. and the devil

  1155. speaks as God

  1156. and the true

  1157. and living God

  1158. truly speaks

  1159. we need to test

  1160. every claim

  1161. of divine speech

  1162. since humans

  1163. speak as God

  1164. and the devil

  1165. speaks as God

  1166. and the true

  1167. and living God

  1168. truly speaks

  1169. we need to test

  1170. every claim

  1171. of divine speech

  1172. that's the very

  1173. very interesting

  1174. thing about the

  1175. Bible passage

  1176. that we're looking

  1177. at is the

  1178. Bible passage

  1179. says it

  1180. doesn't say

  1181. don't listen

  1182. to the

  1183. don't even

  1184. pretend to think

  1185. that God

  1186. speaks

  1187. it isn't like

  1188. the fellow

  1189. reading skeptical

  1190. thinking

  1191. harrumphing at me

  1192. but at the

  1193. same time

  1194. it's not

  1195. be gullible

  1196. in a sense

  1197. it's like

  1198. when I was

  1199. having that

  1200. trying to

  1201. prayerfully

  1202. discern what

  1203. to do

  1204. with those

  1205. people in the

  1206. congregation

  1207. this is quite

  1208. a few years

  1209. ago

  1210. who thought

  1211. that their

  1212. friend was

  1213. having many

  1214. prophetic words

  1215. and by the way

  1216. it eventually

  1217. did come out

  1218. that in fact

  1219. she was

  1220. suffering a

  1221. psychotic

  1222. episode

  1223. that she

  1224. did have

  1225. a mental

  1226. illness

  1227. problem

  1228. and it

  1229. got cleared

  1230. up

  1231. and I

  1232. don't think

  1233. it caused

  1234. any spiritual

  1235. damage to

  1236. anybody

  1237. at least

  1238. none of the

  1239. Christians

  1240. it might have

  1241. caused some

  1242. to some of

  1243. the skeptical

  1244. friends

  1245. giving them

  1246. yet one more

  1247. reason why not

  1248. to believe the

  1249. Christian faith

  1250. but God

  1251. and his

  1252. providence

  1253. can work

  1254. all of those

  1255. things out

  1256. but the

  1257. Bible doesn't

  1258. tell us

  1259. to just shut

  1260. up and to

  1261. pretend

  1262. to think

  1263. that nothing

  1264. happens

  1265. nor does it

  1266. say it's just

  1267. to be gullible

  1268. to any claim

  1269. it goes beyond

  1270. this text

  1271. but the fact

  1272. of the matter

  1273. is that the

  1274. devil can

  1275. speak into

  1276. people's

  1277. lives

  1278. and you

  1279. know as

  1280. we've seen

  1281. already

  1282. Karl Marx

  1283. in effect

  1284. is making

  1285. a claim

  1286. to have a

  1287. type of

  1288. knowledge

  1289. like God

  1290. has

  1291. and you

  1292. could go

  1293. through all

  1294. sorts of

  1295. speakers

  1296. Hitler thought

  1297. that he in a

  1298. sense knew

  1299. the future

  1300. completely and

  1301. utterly wrong

  1302. but in a

  1303. world where

  1304. there are

  1305. many words

  1306. that claim

  1307. to come

  1308. from God

  1309. what the

  1310. Bible is

  1311. saying is

  1312. that there

  1313. are words

  1314. that come

  1315. from God

  1316. so the

  1317. Bible is

  1318. telling us

  1319. that that's

  1320. the situation

  1321. that we live

  1322. in

  1323. the situation

  1324. that we live

  1325. in is that

  1326. there are

  1327. many people

  1328. who think

  1329. that they are

  1330. speaking words

  1331. of God

  1332. and whether

  1333. they're just

  1334. coming from

  1335. themselves or

  1336. whether they're

  1337. coming from

  1338. the devil

  1339. but the fact

  1340. is there is

  1341. a God

  1342. who speaks

  1343. and so we

  1344. have to test

  1345. we have to

  1346. test

  1347. we don't

  1348. we aren't

  1349. gullible

  1350. we shouldn't

  1351. be gullible

  1352. let's put the

  1353. scripture text

  1354. back up again

  1355. say it with

  1356. me

  1357. do not

  1358. quench the

  1359. spirit

  1360. do not

  1361. despise

  1362. prophecies

  1363. but test

  1364. everything

  1365. hold fast

  1366. what is

  1367. good

  1368. one time

  1369. when a

  1370. fellow at

  1371. a Starbucks

  1372. was asking

  1373. me

  1374. like why

  1375. it was

  1376. that I

  1377. thought

  1378. that my

  1379. God was

  1380. different

  1381. my religion

  1382. was different

  1383. what I

  1384. said to

  1385. him was

  1386. what is

  1387. different

  1388. is Jesus

  1389. that the

  1390. Christian faith

  1391. out of all

  1392. of the

  1393. different

  1394. types

  1395. of all

  1396. of the

  1397. different

  1398. religions

  1399. and philosophies

  1400. and theologies

  1401. and spiritualities

  1402. which may claim

  1403. about speaking

  1404. to God

  1405. God speaking

  1406. into their

  1407. lives

  1408. that only

  1409. Jesus

  1410. only Jesus

  1411. only in

  1412. Jesus

  1413. does God

  1414. actually provide

  1415. in a sense

  1416. an historical

  1417. test

  1418. that can be

  1419. studied

  1420. to ground

  1421. the claims

  1422. the Christian

  1423. claim

  1424. and that not

  1425. only is there

  1426. a historical

  1427. claim of

  1428. something central

  1429. happening to

  1430. the person

  1431. of Jesus

  1432. but it just

  1433. doesn't happen

  1434. out of the

  1435. blue

  1436. it doesn't

  1437. happen with

  1438. a whole pile

  1439. of completely

  1440. and utterly

  1441. absurd

  1442. beliefs

  1443. that can't

  1444. really explain

  1445. or make

  1446. anything

  1447. understandable

  1448. I don't know

  1449. like the

  1450. existence of

  1451. aliens

  1452. or that there

  1453. are pink

  1454. elephants

  1455. or the trees

  1456. speak

  1457. it's not like

  1458. there's a whole

  1459. pile of

  1460. ancient mythology

  1461. I don't know

  1462. that the whole

  1463. world is resting

  1464. on a turtle

  1465. but that in

  1466. a system of

  1467. thought where

  1468. the Bible

  1469. contains

  1470. just as I

  1471. said

  1472. with the

  1473. Genesis 1

  1474. 2 and 3

  1475. it's such a

  1476. powerful story

  1477. that explains

  1478. so much

  1479. of human

  1480. life

  1481. and affairs

  1482. and it's

  1483. also not

  1484. just a

  1485. powerful

  1486. stories

  1487. but there's

  1488. powerful

  1489. doctrines

  1490. the doctrine

  1491. of the

  1492. fall

  1493. the doctrine

  1494. that good

  1495. and evil

  1496. that good

  1497. is rooted

  1498. in God's

  1499. character

  1500. that there's

  1501. these powerful

  1502. ideas that

  1503. emerge from

  1504. the Bible

  1505. that explain

  1506. so much

  1507. of what

  1508. human experience

  1509. and human

  1510. knowledge is

  1511. like

  1512. and it's

  1513. also part

  1514. of not only

  1515. powerful stories

  1516. and powerful

  1517. ideas

  1518. and a powerful

  1519. overarching story

  1520. of God

  1521. making all

  1522. things good

  1523. and then human

  1524. beings bringing

  1525. evil into the

  1526. world so that

  1527. all things are

  1528. bent

  1529. and then God

  1530. beginning to

  1531. promise that

  1532. he himself

  1533. will do

  1534. what human

  1535. beings cannot

  1536. do

  1537. and we have

  1538. the age of

  1539. Israel

  1540. and of the

  1541. prophets

  1542. and of the

  1543. giving of the

  1544. law

  1545. and the age

  1546. of the promise

  1547. and then we

  1548. have the coming

  1549. of Jesus

  1550. which is God

  1551. keeping his

  1552. promise

  1553. in this first

  1554. stage

  1555. God keeps his

  1556. promise

  1557. and fulfills

  1558. all of these

  1559. prophecies

  1560. and this is

  1561. vindicated in the

  1562. person of Jesus

  1563. by Jesus saying

  1564. I have come to

  1565. die

  1566. and I will die

  1567. and I will rise

  1568. from the dead

  1569. and then Jesus

  1570. dies and rises

  1571. from the dead

  1572. and it ushers in

  1573. this other period

  1574. of the already

  1575. not yet

  1576. where people

  1577. can know

  1578. Jesus

  1579. and in a sense

  1580. hear God's

  1581. final word for him

  1582. and it's the age

  1583. of the church

  1584. and the promise

  1585. of Jesus coming

  1586. and the end

  1587. of the story

  1588. which is the

  1589. beginning of the

  1590. story which goes

  1591. on for all

  1592. eternity

  1593. is the return

  1594. of Jesus

  1595. and the creation

  1596. of the new

  1597. heaven and the

  1598. new earth

  1599. new heaven and

  1600. earth

  1601. and in the

  1602. midst of

  1603. powerful stories

  1604. and of powerful

  1605. ideas and of

  1606. powerful philosophy

  1607. and of a large

  1608. overarching story

  1609. there stands

  1610. the person

  1611. of Jesus

  1612. put the point

  1613. up please

  1614. true and

  1615. in a world

  1616. with millions

  1617. claiming to

  1618. speak for

  1619. God

  1620. the death

  1621. and resurrection

  1622. of Jesus

  1623. Messiah

  1624. is

  1625. vindication

  1626. that the

  1627. person

  1628. work

  1629. and words

  1630. of Jesus

  1631. are true

  1632. and trustworthy

  1633. in a world

  1634. with millions

  1635. claiming to

  1636. speak for

  1637. God

  1638. the death

  1639. and resurrection

  1640. of Jesus

  1641. Messiah

  1642. is

  1643. vindication

1644. that the person, work, and words of Jesus

  1645. are true and trustworthy.

1646. I think it was just after the Second World War,

1647. there was a lawyer who decided he would put to death

1648. all nonsense of these claims of Christians

1649. of the historical reality of the death of Jesus

1650. upon the cross and his resurrection.

1651. And he figured with his legal training,

1652. I think he was an Oxford grad or something like that as well,

1653. that he would be able to assess the evidence

1654. and write the definitive book to show that it was nonsense.

1655. And as he studied the evidence as it existed in those days,

1656. the surprising conclusion he came to

1657. was that not only was there solid historical evidence

1658. that Jesus lived, solid historical evidence that Jesus died,

1659. solid historical evidence that he was buried,

1660. that there was also solid historical evidence

1661. that the grave was empty,

1662. and that the most reasonable, rational explanation

1663. for the empty tomb was the resurrection of Jesus.

1664. And the book that he was to write,

1665. to disprove the Christian faith,

  1666. is available now.

1667. The name's author is Frank Morrison,

1668. and it's called Who Moved the Stone?

1669. And about 50 years after, 40 years after that book was written,

1670. another man, also legal training,

1671. an investigative journalist, winning many awards,

1672. decided he would do the same thing

1673. because to his complete and utter horror,

1674. his wife had become a Christian.

1675. And he decided that he was going to write the definitive book

1676. to show that there's no evidence

1677. for this Jesus person having risen from the dead.

1678. And the man's name is Lee Strobel,

1679. and the book he wrote is called The Case for Christ.

1680. Without realizing it, he retraced the steps of Frank Morrison,

1681. and after a deep study, came to the conclusion

1682. that not only is it reasonable to believe

1683. that the death, that the resurrection,

1684. not only is it reasonable to believe

1685. that Jesus, the reason the grave was empty

1686. was because Jesus had risen from the dead,

1687. but that is the most reasonable answer.

  1688. I think it's G.K. Chesterton who once said,

1689. Christians believe in miracles because of evidence.

1690. Many people disbelieve in miracles because of doctrine.

1691. G.K. Chesterton wrote over 100 years ago.

1692. And that's the thing which makes it different.

1693. Jesus, in the historical records of his life,

1694. says, I have come to die, I will die,

1695. I will rise from the dead.

1696. And he tells in the historical record

1697. the purpose of his dying and rising.

1698. The accounts of how he institutes the Lord's Supper

1699. shortly before his death and resurrection

1700. is that he's doing this for the forgiveness of sins.

1701. He says he comes to seek and save the lost.

1702. He says he comes to free the captives.

1703. He comes to give life.

1704. He comes to reveal God.

1705. Jesus claims that in him and in his death upon the cross,

1706. there is the most perfect and complete revelation

  1707. of who God is.

1708. That the great longing that many of us have

1709. that God is love is true.

1710. The great mystery that we have

1711. as to how God can be loved

1712. and how God can be completely good

  1713. and completely just,

1714. without compromising any of those things,

1715. Jesus teaches that it's only in the cross

1716. that these mysteries come together.

1717. And we see how God can both be completely good

  1718. and completely just

  1719. and completely loving

  1720. and completely merciful

1721. and completely graceful of grace.

  1722. Only in the cross

  1723. is that made clear.

1724. Only in the person of Jesus

  1725. is that made clear.

1726. And so the Bible teaches

1727. that the resurrection of Jesus Messiah

1728. is the vindication of the person,

1729. work, and words of Jesus

  1730. are true and trustworthy.

1731. And that's why it is that we as Christians,

1732. put up the scripture text again.

1733. That's why we listen to this text

1734. and say it with me.

1735. Do not quench the spirit.

  1736. Do not despise prophecies,

  1737. but test everything.

1738. Pull fast what is good.

1739. Put up the next point, please.

1740. The Bible is the true and final word

1741. from the true and living God.

  1742. And the Bible's account

1743. of the person and work of Jesus

1744. is the key to knowing God

  1745. and his word written.

1746. The Bible is the true and final word

1747. from the true and living God.

  1748. And the Bible's account

1749. of the person and work of Jesus

1750. is the key to knowing God

  1751. and his word written.

1752. Jesus, if you go back

1753. and listen to the records

  1754. of Jesus' life,

  1755. that Jesus goes back

1756. and he says that that

1757. which we now call the Old Testament

  1758. is the very word

  1759. that comes from God.

  1760. Why do I believe

  1761. that the Old Testament

  1762. is a prophecy in a sense,

1763. a direct word from God

  1764. into our human situation?

  1765. Not because of,

  1766. I believe it ultimately

1767. because that's what Jesus said.

1768. Why do I believe Jesus?

  1769. Because I,

1770. in his death and resurrection,

1771. in the context of profound words

1772. and stories in the Bible

1773. and of ideas and doctrines

1774. that make so much sense

1775. and explain so much thing

  1776. in a profound metanarrative,

1777. that Jesus is in the midst

  1778. of all that,

  1779. vindicating that

  1780. and providing historical evidence

  1781. for it.

  1782. And it's a revelation

  1783. that's not just a revelation

  1784. that's about knowledge,

  1785. but it's a revelation

  1786. about being coming united

  1787. with God

  1788. through what Jesus does

  1789. on the cross,

1790. that God speaks to us

  1791. to save us.

  1792. He speaks to us

1793. to call us back to himself

1794. that we might be his.

1795. And it's in the context

  1796. of his love

  1797. and his desire

1798. to have us be his

  1799. that he reveals himself.

  1800. And Jesus says

1801. the words of the Old Testament

1802. are words that come from God.

  1803. And Jesus says

  1804. that my words

  1805. will not be forgotten.

  1806. That's the reason

  1807. why Christians believe

  1808. that the New Testament

  1809. is ultimately

  1810. from God himself.

1811. And it's only by knowing

  1812. and understanding Jesus

1813. and what he did for us

  1814. on the cross

  1815. and his resurrection

1816. that the Bible makes sense

  1817. and that God

  1818. can be truly known.

  1819. And that God

  1820. can be truly known.

1821. Now here's the issue for us

1822. as we sort of bring

1823. this sermon to a close.

  1824. You could put up

  1825. the next point.

1826. God is always more willing

  1827. to speak to me

  1828. than I am willing

  1829. to listen to him.

1830. God is always more willing

  1831. to speak to me

  1832. than I am willing

  1833. to listen to him.

1834. Every single one of us

  1835. can probably share

1836. lots of stories of abuse

  1837. of people who say

  1838. they have the words

  1839. of prophecy

1840. or they hear the words

  1841. from God.

  1842. That we could probably

  1843. have a very interesting

  1844. coffee time discussion

  1845. of really, really,

  1846. really dumb things

1847. and really, really evil things

  1848. that Christians have done

1849. claiming to hear from God.

  1850. We could probably share

  1851. many, many stories

  1852. like that.

  1853. But my suspicion is

1854. that when we get to heaven

1855. and God speaks into my life

1856. and speaks into my life

  1857. about, you know,

1858. he's letting me into heaven

  1859. because of what Jesus

  1860. has done for me

  1861. on the cross,

1862. we're still going to help

  1863. make clear to me

1864. the meaning of my life

  1865. and what went on

  1866. in my life.

  1867. And I bet God

  1868. will confront me

1869. far more about the times

  1870. that I refused

  1871. to listen to him

  1872. than about the times

  1873. that it was abused.

  1874. That I will probably

  1875. be shocked

  1876. if God was just

  1877. to replay my life

  1878. and say,

  1879. you know,

  1880. George,

  1881. see that?

1882. I told you not to do that

  1883. and you went ahead

  1884. and did it.

  1885. And you heard me,

  1886. didn't you?

  1887. And George,

  1888. you were doing this

  1889. and I told you

  1890. you should be going

1891. and maybe saying that word

1892. or maybe making that apology

1893. and you didn't do it,

  1894. did you?

  1895. But you knew that,

  1896. didn't you, George?

  1897. And you know,

  1898. George,

1899. that time you asked me

  1900. for wisdom

  1901. about a particular point

  1902. in your sermon

  1903. and George,

  1904. didn't I right away

1905. put an idea in your head

  1906. and didn't you completely

  1907. and utterly ignore it

  1908. and do something

  1909. that you thought

  1910. would make a bigger,

  1911. in your feeble,

1912. God can say that to me,

  1913. your feeble mind

  1914. that you thought

  1915. would be better

1916. and you asked for my help

1917. and I gave you help

  1918. right away

1919. and you didn't use it,

  1920. did you?

  1921. And my guess is

1922. that when we get to heaven,

  1923. God's going to spend

  1924. vastly more time

1925. with us refusing to listen

  1926. than those times

  1927. that we invented

  1928. listening or abused it.

1929. God is always more willing

  1930. to speak to me

  1931. than I am willing

  1932. to listen to him.

  1933. The Holy Spirit,

1934. to put the text back up,

  1935. Jeremy,

1936. say it together with me,

1937. do not quench the spirit,

  1938. do not despise prophecies,

  1939. but test everything,

1940. hold fast what is good.

  1941. You see,

  1942. don't despise the fact

  1943. that God speaks.

1944. God is far more willing

1945. to speak to you and me

  1946. than we are,

1947. than I am to listen

1948. than you are to listen

  1949. and the Holy Spirit

  1950. is the means

1951. by which God speaks to us,

1952. brings God's word home to us

1953. and brings us personal words

  1954. of direction,

  1955. guidance as well.

1956. And so to not want

  1957. to hear God speak

  1958. is to,

  1959. in a sense,

1960. to say that the Holy Spirit

1961. has no role in our lives

1962. and that God's to have

1963. no role in our lives.

  1964. Here's the final point.

  1965. Put it up,

  1966. please, Jeremy.

1967. God can speak directly to us

  1968. and he can speak

  1969. through other people,

  1970. but each word,

1971. I would now maybe say

  1972. personal word

1973. if I was to write it again,

  1974. each personal word

  1975. must always be weighed

  1976. by the prayerful,

  1977. communal reading

  1978. of God's word written.

  1979. You see,

  1980. the main way

1981. that we start to be able

1982. to hear the word of God

  1983. is by actually learning

1984. how to just hear the Bible

  1985. because we know

1986. we can depend upon this

  1987. being the way

  1988. that God speaks.

  1989. You know,

  1990. if you think

1991. that God is telling you

1992. to cheat on your wife,

  1993. I don't have to spend time

  1994. in prayer

  1995. discerning whether

  1996. that's the case.

  1997. It's very clear

  1998. from the Bible

1999. that God's not calling you

2000. to cheat on your wife.

  2001. Okay?

2002. We don't have to pray

2003. and fast over this issue.

  2004. He's not calling you

2005. to cheat on your wife.

  2006. Okay?

2007. But whether he's calling you

2008. to do something more specific,

  2009. whether he's calling you

  2010. to become a missionary

2011. or whether he's calling you

  2012. to take this job

2013. or whether he's calling you

2014. to do a particular thing,

  2015. you know,

2016. those are the types of things

  2017. that over time

2018. as you build your muscles

2019. and being able to hear,

  2020. you learn by hearing

2021. by actually hearing the word

  2022. and hearing the word

  2023. shared and talked

  2024. with other people

  2025. and hearing it opened

  2026. in church

  2027. and other places

  2028. where hopefully

  2029. the people are trustworthy.

  2030. And then that means

  2031. that not everything

  2032. that comes into you

2033. as a word from God

  2034. is something

  2035. that you necessarily

  2036. have to get

2037. some type of feedback in.

  2038. Just this week,

  2039. I had a meeting

  2040. a little while ago,

2041. a couple of weeks ago,

  2042. and I realized,

  2043. it was that God

  2044. just spoke to me

  2045. on Friday

  2046. and he said,

  2047. you know, George,

  2048. in that meeting,

  2049. you said this,

2050. and I know it was in joke,

2051. and I know everybody laughed,

2052. but you shouldn't have said that

2053. and you need to apologize.

  2054. And I don't need to get

  2055. prayerful discernment

  2056. over that.

  2057. Hopefully,

2058. I'm going to see this person

2059. within the next couple of days.

  2060. If not,

2061. I'm going to call them

2062. and I'm going to apologize.

  2063. I don't need to get

  2064. prayerful discernment

  2065. or communal discernment

  2066. because that's a very simple

  2067. type of thing.

  2068. But in general,

  2069. as God speaks

2070. not only about specific types

  2071. of things,

2072. you need to go in

  2073. to apologize.

2074. You need to do this,

2075. you need to do that.

  2076. Those are things

2077. that as you read God's word,

2078. you can just hear them

  2079. as personal words

  2080. and direction,

  2081. guidance,

  2082. and wisdom from God

2083. that you are to go towards.

  2084. But other things

  2085. which might be very,

  2086. very bigger

  2087. and have bigger types

  2088. of consequences,

  2089. those are often things

2090. that you need to have

  2091. some time on.

2092. A couple of years ago,

  2093. there was a woman

2094. during one of the church services.

2095. After the sermon was over,

2096. she came up to me

2097. and she said to me,

  2098. George,

2099. I think God is calling me

  2100. to confess

  2101. before the church

  2102. my adultery.

  2103. So she came up.

2104. I was sitting in the front row.

2105. She came up behind me

  2106. and she said that.

  2107. And I said,

  2108. well,

2109. why don't we both pray

2110. about this for a week or two?

  2111. And if it seems

2112. as if God is still

2113. calling you to do this,

2114. we'll let you do it.

  2115. And so there was

  2116. some behind-the-scenes

  2117. conversation

  2118. and we ended up

  2119. discerning that

2120. that was what she should do

  2121. and she did it.

  2122. But that's a pretty

  2123. dramatic step,

  2124. you know?

  2125. Not just something

2126. just because in a sermon

  2127. you get an idea

2128. or in a church service

  2129. yet I should just

2130. jump up and do it.

  2131. That has bigger repercussions

2132. and it was the right

  2133. thing to do.

  2134. I feel very comfortable

2135. that there was that time

  2136. of extra discernment

  2137. about it.

2138. And she did the right thing

2139. in coming to speak to me

2140. and I had her speak

  2141. to obviously another person

  2142. about it

  2143. and it ended up

2144. it was the right thing

  2145. to do.

  2146. And that's why

2147. it says God can speak

  2148. directly to us

  2149. and he can speak

  2150. through other people

  2151. but each personal word

  2152. must always be weighed

  2153. by the prayerful communal

2154. reading of God's word written.

2155. Now we're going to close

  2156. with two prayers

2157. and we're going to close

  2158. with a prayer

2159. hopefully after all of this

2160. you would like to join

  2161. with me in praying

  2162. that every day

  2163. you will spend time

  2164. in God's word

  2165. and that you'll learn

  2166. to speak to God

  2167. and listen to God

  2168. and recognize the voice

  2169. of God

  2170. and receive wisdom

  2171. and guidance from God.

2172. But there's one other prayer

  2173. that some of us

2174. might want to pray first.

2175. Could you put it up please?

  2176. The first prayer.

2177. You know the fundamental way

2178. that we really definitively hear

  2179. the voice of God?

2180. It comes from the book

  2181. of Revelation chapter 3

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  2182. and there's this image

2183. of how the Christian life begins

  2184. and many of us

  2185. have spent many years

  2186. in church

  2187. and maybe we've been

2188. in and out of churches

2189. and we might even have

2190. a great fondness for Jesus

  2191. and we see it

  2192. but the Bible

  2193. paints this picture

  2194. in Revelation 3

  2195. of Jesus standing

2196. at the door of our life

2197. and he knocks on the door

  2198. and he's saying

  2199. George

2200. please let me come in

  2201. to be your savior

  2202. and your Lord.

2203. And I might be very content

  2204. looking through the keyhole

  2205. and getting a glimpse

2206. of Jesus every once in a while

  2207. and getting very excited.

2208. I might like to talk

2209. to Jesus through the door.

2210. I might like to slip

  2211. Jesus' notes

  2212. through underneath the door.

  2213. and I might actually

  2214. think I've had

  2215. more profound

  2216. mystical experiences

  2217. than other people

2218. because I know of times

  2219. when I've slipped notes

2220. through the door to Jesus

  2221. and he's done

  2222. remarkable things.

  2223. But all the time

  2224. and maybe there are

  2225. some here today

  2226. who realize that Jesus

  2227. even though this

  2228. doesn't seem to be

  2229. a very evangelistic sermon

  2230. that even now

  2231. you realize that Jesus

  2232. has been knocking

2233. on the door of your life.

  2234. And the Bible says

  2235. that when he knocks

2236. on the door of a life

  2237. that what he's asking

  2238. is he's asking

  2239. and you can maybe

2240. if you're an imaginative person

2241. you can just picture it

2242. that inside of who you are

  2243. you hear the voice

  2244. the knocking of Jesus

2245. and you open the door

2246. and Jesus looks at him

  2247. and said

  2248. I've been knocking

  2249. on your door

  2250. for all your life.

  2251. Can I come in

  2252. and be your savior

  2253. and your Lord?

2254. And you look at Jesus

  2255. and you say

  2256. Jesus please come

  2257. into my life.

  2258. I've opened the door.

  2259. Come into my life

  2260. and be my savior

  2261. and my Lord.

  2262. And if there is

  2263. a person here today

  2264. who's heard that knocking

2265. but not responded to it

  2266. there's no better time

  2267. than right now

  2268. to ask Jesus

2269. to come into your life.

  2270. So I'd like everybody

  2271. to stand

  2272. and if

  2273. I'm not asking

2274. to pray it out loud

  2275. it's just between you

  2276. and God

  2277. it's between you

  2278. and Jesus

2279. and I only put this

  2280. prayer up here

2281. to help put into words

  2282. how you could say

  2283. to Jesus

2284. but I'm going to say it

  2285. and if the God

2286. is speaking into your life

  2287. if you realize

  2288. that Jesus is knocking

2289. at the door of your life

2290. and you've never done it

  2291. could you pray this

  2292. along with me please

  2293. knowing that you're not

  2294. praying it to me

  2295. but you're praying it

  2296. to Jesus

2297. and if you ask Jesus

2298. to come into your life

  2299. the savior and Lord

  2300. he will.

  2301. Dear Jesus

  2302. I hear you knocking

2303. on the door to my life

  2304. please help me

  2305. to open the door

2306. of my life to you.

2307. please come into my life

  2308. as my savior

  2309. and my Lord

  2310. please save me

  2311. please be my Lord

  2312. I thank you

  2313. that you will make

  2314. your home in me

  2315. and never leave me

  2316. or forsake me

  2317. Amen

  2318. You've prayed that prayer

  2319. for the first time

2320. or maybe in a way

  2321. that really feels like

  2322. it's the first time

2323. one of the best things

  2324. you can do

2325. before the service is over

  2326. but before you leave

  2327. this building

  2328. is just tell somebody

  2329. that you've prayed it

  2330. and it's a very

  2331. very powerful thing

2332. and then give me a call

  2333. or any of the

  2334. Daniel or Jeremiah

  2335. up at the front

2336. or maybe the coffee people

2337. and we'd love to maybe

  2338. just chat with you

  2339. later on

  2340. about getting you

2341. moving along in the way

  2342. talk to Brian

  2343. who's

  2344. he'll be helping

  2345. with communion

2346. he'd love to talk to you

2347. as well after the service

  2348. if that's a prayer

  2349. that you've done

  2350. for the first time

2351. and if you pray that

  2352. for the first time

  2353. then you really need

2354. to pray this second prayer

2355. you can put it up

2356. you can see it in two parts

  2357. and I'm inviting you

2358. to pray along with me

  2359. out loud

  2360. if this is what's

2361. the cry of your heart

  2362. to hear God speak

  2363. into your life

  2364. you know the fact

  2365. that there's all these

  2366. other claims

  2367. of other things

  2368. you might have

  2369. intellectual doubts

  2370. from outside

  2371. you might have been

  2372. burned by people

2373. who claim to be prophets

  2374. in your past

2375. but God is calling you

  2376. to not just

  2377. not to despise prophecies

  2378. and set them aside

2379. and quench the Holy Spirit

  2380. but to realize

  2381. that not only

  2382. has God spoken

  2383. definitively

  2384. through his word

  2385. to you

  2386. but he gives you

  2387. personal words

  2388. of guidance

  2389. and wisdom

  2390. and direction

  2391. and he wants you

  2392. to hear it

  2393. so if God

  2394. is putting it

  2395. on your heart

  2396. to pray

  2397. then please join me

  2398. in praying

  2399. dear God

  2400. please help me

  2401. to listen to you

  2402. every day

  2403. as I humbly

  2404. read your word

  2405. written

  2406. please help me

  2407. to pray every day

  2408. for your guidance

  2409. and your wisdom

  2410. please help me

  2411. to listen

  2412. for your answer

  2413. please help me

  2414. to dwell

  2415. on your word

  2416. written

  2417. in the company

  2418. of your people

  2419. as I prayerfully

  2420. consider

  2421. your personal

  2422. word to me

  2423. as I hear you

  2424. please help me

  2425. to trust you

  2426. and put your word

  2427. into action

  2428. please help me

  2429. to do all things

  2430. for your glory

  2431. in Jesus' name

  2432. amen

2433. father this is the cry

  2434. of our heart

  2435. I ask that your

  2436. holy spirit

  2437. would come and move

  2438. mightily in our lives

2439. and seal this to us

2440. and help us to live

  2441. this prayer

  2442. as individuals

  2443. and as a church

  2444. and this we ask

  2445. in Jesus' name

  2446. on
