  1. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Chris. I oversee community groups here at Watermark, and it's great to see so many of you this morning.

  2. How do you define success? What is it to be successful? I've got a few pictures up here. Here is Mr. Li Ka-Shing.

  3. Is he a successful man? What about the next one? Here is Steve Jobs. Incredible visionary, creative talent. Was he successful in his life?

  4. Here is Mother Teresa, poured out a life for many, many people, served the poor in India. Was she a success?

  5. Here are my parents. Were they a success? You don't have to answer that question.

  6. Okay, we all have different views of what it means to be successful in our lives.

  7. And we're looking through God's story, and it's a story about what it means to be successful in life.

  8. So we've looked at, and if we can have a look at the icons, we've looked so far in this story about how God has created us.

  9. He's the ruler. He's the king. He's created us in his image to be like him, to enjoy relationship with him,

  10. enjoy relationship with each other, and to be people who go out and fill the world with his goodness and with his love.

  11. We also saw how in the story, we decided that actually we didn't want to be living in obedience to God's word.

  12. We didn't want to do that. We wanted to run life our way.

  13. And what happened is we said, we want to be the boss. We don't want to do things your way.

  14. And what happens is things begin to break down. Relationship with God breaks down.

  15. Relationship with others begins to break down. There's fear. There's hurt. There's shame.

  16. There's all these things which begin to make life crumble apart.

  17. And just as things have been getting bad, just as things have been getting bad,

  18. the people are not really living as God's people.

  19. The people are not living under God's rule.

  20. The people are not living as a blessing to other people.

  21. Then God comes and promises to Abraham three things.

  22. He says, I'm going to recreate what I've already started.

  23. I'm going to recreate a people in my image.

  24. You're going to have a people.

  25. He says to Abraham, you're going to have a land, a place that I'm going to put you in.

  26. He says, I'm going to give you blessing.

  27. And blessing which is going to go out to all the nations.

  28. And so we've seen how God has taken the people out of slavery, through the Passover.

  29. Passover. He's taken them into giving them his law,

  30. which was meant to be a place where the people had his word

  31. so they could be obedient to him, to enjoy his blessings,

  32. to enjoy relationship with him, to learn how to love him first, love others.

  33. And now he's going to bring them into the land that he's promised them.

  34. So that's where we got to in the story so far.

  35. The only problem so far has been God's wanted to take the people into the land.

  36. And 40 years previous to where we are in this story,

  37. he took them to the land.

  38. The people of Israel said, the land looks amazing,

  39. but there are some big people there.

  40. We're scared. We don't want to go in.

  41. So God, send us back to slavery in Egypt because it's much better there.

  42. And 40 years later, all of that generation has died out except two people,

  43. Joshua and Caleb.

  44. So that's where we come to this story.

  45. And we're going to look at this story because it's an amazing story.

  46. I think it's a great story.

  47. We're going to look at it about the commission, the mission, our plans, and God's plans.

  48. Okay?

  49. The commission, the mission, our plans, God's plans.

  50. So let's kind of get into the story a little bit.

  51. So it starts off, this passage, after the death of Moses.

  52. And he comes to Joshua.

  53. God says to Joshua,

  54. Moses, my servant is dead.

  55. Now you go into the land that I am giving to you.

  56. Now, I don't know if you've thought about this,

  57. but Moses, and in the previous chapter of Deuteronomy, it says,

  58. Moses was a prophet like nobody else.

  59. He saw God.

  60. He met with God face to face.

  61. He was someone who did incredible signs and wonders.

  62. He was the man who was the most successful leader ever in the history of Israel.

  63. In fact, he was the only leader.

  64. But that's beside the point,

  65. because he was someone who everybody looked up to.

  66. And now he's dead.

  67. And Joshua, who's been his little assistant walking alongside him,

  68. it's his turn now.

  69. And God tells him,

  70. you're going to do something that even Moses couldn't do.

  71. Imagine how Joshua's feeling at this point.

  72. A little bit of fear.

  73. A little bit of intrepidation.

  74. A little bit of,

  75. ooh, I'm not sure about that.

  76. And so God has to tell Joshua three times,

  77. be strong and courageous.

  78. Be strong and courageous.

  79. Be strong and courageous.

  80. In fact, Moses has already told him,

  81. because it seems like he hasn't quite got the message.

  82. And God reassures Joshua in this moment.

  83. He says, listen, I know this task seems so big for you,

  84. but you know what?

  85. I'm giving you this land.

  86. I'm giving you the land.

  87. It's a gift from me.

  88. It's my land.

  89. I'm giving it to you.

  90. Because you may feel overwhelmed,

  91. but realize that I'm the one who gives

  92. and wants to bless you generously with what is mine.

  93. So it's a bit like,

  94. I'm giving you,

  95. this is my house.

  96. This is my land.

  97. I'm giving you,

  98. I've got the title deeds.

  99. I'm giving it to you.

  100. All I'm asking you to do is go and move into my house.

  101. That's what he's saying.

  102. And then he says,

  103. he's reassuring him again by saying,

  104. also,

  105. what's going to make you successful

  106. is the fact,

  107. not of your great abilities,

  108. not of your great adequacy,

  109. not of your great career record,

  110. because it's not looking too good at the moment,

  111. but actually,

  112. what's going to make you successful

  113. is that I am with you

  114. and you need to get into my word,

  115. you need to meditate on it,

  116. you need to soak in it,

  117. and you need to obey it.

  118. Because when you do that,

  119. when you put me first,

  120. you know what?

  121. You will be successful.

  122. You will be successful.

  123. I will not leave you.

  124. I will not forsake you

  125. because I'm in this.

  126. It's not about your adequacy.

  127. It's about me.

  128. In fact,

  129. your success is not even really

  130. just about the mission that I've got you on.

  131. That's important,

  132. but that's not the main thing.

  133. That's not ultimate success.

  134. The main success is not measured in your achievements,

  135. but it's measured in your relationship.

  136. God doesn't measure your success

  137. in how much you've managed to get done.

  138. He's measuring it in terms of your obedience

  139. and your relationship with him.

  140. So if you remember,

  141. last week,

  142. God showed us that what he wanted for his people

  143. was to be a people who loved him

  144. and loved others,

  145. who were distinctive in the way they did relationships.

  146. And who really honored him.

  147. So let me just ask the question to you.

  148. What is success for you?

  149. What is it that if you were to look on your gravestone,

  150. at the end of your life,

  151. you would want to be known for?

  152. Because God makes it very clear to Joshua

  153. that he is to be known as somebody

  154. who was God's man,

  155. who was a man who loved, followed God.

  156. That's the commission.

  157. So now let's get in a bit more

  158. into the juicy details of the story,

  159. because this story is amazing.

  160. And we're going to have a go and look in chapter two,

  161. because we're going to look at the actual mission.

  162. And I love this bit,

  163. because Joshua takes this commission

  164. and he comes up with a strategy

  165. for entering into the land.

  166. He kind of goes on a little bit of a recce mission

  167. to see where the lie of the land is,

  168. to see who the people are,

  169. and to work out where the weak points of the land is.

  170. And so they come to Jericho.

  171. And if you've got a,

  172. there's a picture, I think, of Jericho here.

  173. Tobin took this picture while he was on.

  174. It doesn't look the most exciting place,

  175. but there was plenty of things to go and see.

  176. So they go out on this mission,

  177. two budding kind of little James Bonds, you know.

  178. They're off there on their Occupy Canaan mission.

  179. And let's call these little spies Dan and Ben.

  180. Okay?

  181. So Dan and Ben are coming along into the city

  182. and, you know, heart pounding

  183. because they're going right into enemy territory,

  184. behind enemy lines.

  185. And they come in,

  186. and they come into the city

  187. and they think they've got in unnoticed.

  188. They slip into a local inn just at the beginning.

  189. And you can see them kind of high-fiving each other.

  190. Yeah, we made it.

  191. We got it.

  192. Okay?

  193. And they get into this little place,

  194. which seems to them a little bit seedy.

  195. Okay?

  196. A little bit on the dodgy side.

  197. But these were kind of naive, young Jewish boys,

  198. so they're not used to seeing the bright lights of the city.

  199. And the owner seems just a little bit over-friendly.

  200. Okay?

  201. They're not sure what she's after,

  202. but, you know, their genitals pumping,

  203. and they're thinking everything's going fine.

  204. Now, if you actually read the story carefully,

  205. and if you read it in the Hebrews where it looks,

  206. the spies are less like James Bond

  207. and are more like Austin Powers or Johnny English,

  208. because the whole thing is quite comical,

  209. the way it's written.

  210. I mean, think about it.

  211. They're completely incompetent,

  212. because they've just walked in.

  213. They've only been there a few hours,

  214. and already the king knows everything about them.

  215. He knows where they are,

  216. what they're doing,

  217. and which house they're staying at.

  218. That's not a good spy.

  219. Okay?

  220. Okay?

  221. Then, if that's not enough,

  222. where have they walked into but the local brothel?

  223. Okay?

  224. And for some naive Jewish boys,

  225. who are meant to be the holy people of God,

  226. representing him,

  227. it's all getting just a little bit racy.

  228. There's a few distractions going on here.

  229. Okay?

  230. And just as the boys maybe seem to be getting on

  231. rather too well with Rahab at this point,

  232. there's a knock on the door.

  233. And the king's representatives come there and say,

  234. excuse me,

  235. there are some guys who've come,

  236. and they're our vicious enemies,

  237. and they've come to search out and steal our land.

  238. We know they're in there.

  239. Bring them out.

  240. Everything seems lost for this Israeli Jewish boys.

  241. Their spying career seems like it's coming

  242. to a very abrupt end.

  243. End.

  244. But then Rahab comes along,

  245. and she's obviously a pretty savvy woman.

  246. She comes to these actually rather clueless kingsmen

  247. and says three blatant lies.

  248. I mean, these are big whoppers.

  249. I mean, she says,

  250. the men came to me,

  251. and I didn't know where they were from.

  252. Okay?

  253. Being a prostitute,

  254. you can only imagine what she's actually saying.

  255. She's actually implying,

  256. they did some business with me.

  257. They went away.

  258. They were satisfied.

  259. Okay?

  260. They left the city.

  261. I don't know where they are.

  262. And then she says,

  263. you better run after them quickly.

  264. And she says,

  265. they went that way.

  266. Okay?

  267. And these clueless guys are like,

  268. oh.

  269. Okay?

  270. And you see them running off into the distance,

  271. out through the gates,

  272. and then the gates are slammed shut,

  273. and they're locked out for the night.

  274. And the enemies are locked in.

  275. Isn't it crazy?

  276. And if that's not enough,

  277. you see,

  278. the spies are upstairs,

  279. you know,

  280. looking really macho,

  281. lying under a load of grass or something,

  282. trying to hide them,

  283. probably, like,

  284. poking in their ears,

  285. trying not to sneeze

  286. while the conversation is going on down below.

  287. And they're wondering,

  288. man,

  289. what have we got ourselves into?

  290. This Rahab person,

  291. what is she going to give us away?

  292. What's going on here?

  293. They have no clue what is going on.

  294. Everything seems lost.

  295. And yet,

  296. God has planned

  297. a pagan prostitute

  298. to be the means

  299. that God is going to bring about

  300. his purposes and plans.

  301. It's incredible.

  302. And if you think about this story,

  303. we've got to kind of...

  304. The story's not really

  305. what you might call

  306. a good Christian story

  307. because

  308. there's a part in it

  309. where there's lies going on.

  310. And some people have said,

  311. in this story,

  312. Rahab lies,

  313. that means it's okay

  314. for Christians to lie.

  315. Okay?

  316. Because she does.

  317. God seems to not mind

  318. too much about it.

  319. Is it okay for people to lie?

  320. Well,

  321. I'm not going to go into much detail,

  322. but I think

  323. if you think about it,

  324. here's just a couple of thoughts.

  325. When we lie,

  326. our lies are mostly

  327. about saving ourselves,

  328. advancing ourselves,

  329. making ourselves look good

  330. so we can get something

  331. out of the situation.

  332. Rahab lies,

  333. and she's saving others,

  334. and she's putting herself

  335. on the line.

  336. Because, you know,

  337. if the king finds out

  338. what Rahab has done,

  339. do you know what's going to happen to her?

  340. Now,

  341. she's going to be dead.

  342. She is willing

  343. to sacrifice her life

  344. for theirs

  345. because she's seen

  346. something about God

  347. which is different.

  348. Now,

  349. could she possibly

  350. have avoided lying?

  351. Maybe.

  352. But remember who she is?

  353. She's a rough woman

  354. who is a messy character,

  355. and she does the only thing

  356. she knows how to do

  357. in a life-or-death situation.

  358. And she chooses

  359. to honor God,

  360. the God of the Israelites,

  361. more than saving her own skin.

  362. And this is incredible.

  363. I mean,

  364. look at verse 9 and 11.

  365. This is just quite extraordinary.

  366. Rahab says,

  367. Think about the scene.

  368. These guys,

  369. they're just lying

  370. under some grass,

  371. heart pounding,

  372. okay,

  373. looking a complete wreck,

  374. and she's saying,

  375. everybody's melting away

  376. before you.

  377. Something supernatural

  378. is going on

  379. because I don't think

  380. anyone else

  381. will be melting away

  382. before them.

  383. And she says,

  384. Your God,

  385. the Lord,

  386. is the God

  387. of the heavens

  388. and the earth.

  389. Rahab is a pagan Canaanite.

  390. Remember,

  391. pagan,

  392. at those times,

  393. they had lots

  394. of different gods.

  395. They had the gods

  396. of the storms,

  397. gods of fertility,

  398. gods of marriage,

  399. gods of war.

  400. They had every kind

  401. of god you could imagine,

  402. okay?

  403. And your purpose

  404. as a follower

  405. of the religion

  406. was to make sure

  407. you appeased,

  408. make sure you were loyal

  409. to these gods

  410. because if you weren't,

  411. they might kind of

  412. strike you down.

  413. If you were,

  414. if you managed

  415. to get their favor

  416. like we talked about

  417. last week,

  418. then they might get blessing.

  419. But she's actually

  420. being disloyal

  421. to her gods

  422. and she's saying,

  423. I know your god

  424. is more powerful,

  425. stronger,

  426. mightier,

  427. greater than any

  428. of my gods.

  429. And think even further

  430. about who this woman is.

  431. Rahab is an outcast

  432. in society.

  433. She's the lowest

  434. of the low.

  435. She appears to be unmarried.

  436. No husband is mentioned.

  437. No children are mentioned

  438. when she talks about

  439. who she wants to save.

  440. And in a woman

  441. where your honor

  442. came through having

  443. your children,

  444. she had none.

  445. in a place

  446. where the women

  447. would look at her profession

  448. and would scorn her

  449. and the men

  450. would look at her

  451. and they were probably

  452. her clients

  453. and they would think

  454. she was good

  455. just for one thing.

  456. God looked at her

  457. and saw

  458. something bigger

  459. and greater.

  460. He wanted

  461. to save

  462. and reach out

  463. and work

  464. in Rahab's life.

  465. All the others

  466. are under

  467. his judgment

  468. and she knows

  469. that she would be

  470. under God's judgment

  471. as well

  472. and she turns

  473. to God

  474. and she strikes

  475. a deal.

  476. She says,

  477. if I put this cord

  478. in a window,

  479. when you guys

  480. come back

  481. because I know

  482. God's given you

  483. this land,

  484. when I come back

  485. this will be a sign

  486. that you're going

  487. to save me.

  488. That just like,

  489. remember,

  490. at Passover

  491. the blood,

  492. as Celeste said earlier,

  493. was the protection

  494. that when God saw it

  495. they were safe.

  496. So when the Israelites

  497. were going to see

  498. this cord,

  499. the whole of that family

  500. was going to be saved,

  501. protected from death.

  502. And the story's amazing

  503. because the spies

  504. managed to get home

  505. and do you know

  506. what they say?

  507. In spite of their incompetence,

  508. in spite of their

  509. everything seeming

  510. to go wrong,

  511. God has actually

  512. brought them

  513. to the right house,

  514. he's got them

  515. the right information

  516. and he's even

  517. increased their faith

  518. that God

  519. is at work

  520. and God is going

  521. to give them

  522. the land.

  523. They were fearful

  524. but it takes

  525. a pagan prostitute

  526. to encourage them

  527. to trust in their God.

  528. Would you have

  529. planned that?

  530. Would you have

  531. planned that?

  532. Because God's

  533. great plan as well

  534. was to bring Rahab

  535. into his family.

  536. An outcast

  537. is welcomed in.

  538. She lives

  539. and dwells

  540. with the people

  541. of God.

  542. God's

  543. God's

  544. I'd never

  545. have planned that.

  546. I don't think

  547. Joshua

  548. and the spies

  549. would ever

  550. have planned that.

  551. But

  552. when we make

  553. our plans,

  554. generally they're

  555. often centered

  556. around making us

  557. more comfortable.

  558. Maybe getting us,

  559. making us look

  560. competent,

  561. making us look

  562. capable,

  563. making us look

  564. as if we're

  565. we can do it

  566. by ourselves.

  567. But when God

  568. does his plans,

  569. do you know

  570. who gets the glory?

  571. It's God

  572. because he's

  573. the one who's

  574. made to look

  575. more infinitely

  576. wise,

  577. greater,

  578. stronger,

  579. more glorious.

  580. His plans

  581. are so much

  582. bigger and he

  583. invites us

  584. to be part

  585. of his plan

  586. and to fall

  587. more in love

  588. with him

  589. as you see

  590. how he works.

  591. He doesn't work

  592. the way we work.

  593. That's the mission.

  594. It's an extraordinary

  595. story, isn't it?

  596. Who would have

  597. thought it?

  598. So we thought

  599. about the commission

  600. that God told

  601. Joshua to go in

  602. and to trust him,

  603. to obey him.

  604. We've looked at

  605. the mission

  606. and how everything

  607. seemed to go wrong.

  608. Now let's think

  609. about our plans

  610. for a minute.

  611. I think in Hong Kong

  612. this is a place

  613. where we love

  614. making plans.

  615. You know,

  616. we make plans

  617. for our financial

  618. security.

  619. We make plans

  620. for our investments.

  621. We make plans

  622. for our children.

  623. We make plans

  624. for our vacations.

  625. We make plans

  626. for our career

  627. development.

  628. We're always

  629. making plans.

  630. Big plans,

  631. little plans.

  632. Everything has

  633. to be planned.

  634. Now Joshua

  635. made plans.

  636. God told him

  637. to go into the land

  638. but he didn't give him

  639. detailed instructions

  640. on how to do it.

  641. So he's there.

  642. He thinks,

  643. okay,

  644. I'm using my best

  645. military tactics.

  646. I'm going to plan

  647. to go in.

  648. But the thing

  649. is,

  650. with the plans,

  651. God didn't have

  652. a problem

  653. with them

  654. making plans.

  655. God doesn't have

  656. a problem

  657. with us

  658. making plans.

  659. But what was

  660. the primary goal

  661. of their plans

  662. is the essential thing.

  663. You see,

  664. at every different

  665. stage of life,

  666. it's really interesting,

  667. every different

  668. stage of life,

  669. you'll have

  670. different plans

  671. and a different view

  672. of what you think

  673. success is for you

  674. at that moment.

  675. We recently had

  676. a two-year-old

  677. staying with us

  678. and success for her,

  679. the thing which

  680. all her plans

  681. revolved around

  682. were getting

  683. a frozen pencil

  684. from Disneyland.

  685. This was her

  686. great life's work

  687. that if she could

  688. get some piece

  689. of merchandise

  690. which showed

  691. somebody looking

  692. more like a

  693. Swedish pop star

  694. than anything else,

  695. if she could get

  696. this,

  697. then her life

  698. was complete.

  699. I look at this

  700. a little bit

  701. cynically,

  702. thinking,

  703. this is just

  704. a tactic

  705. to guilt parents

  706. into lining

  707. the pockets

  708. of rich companies,

  709. but I had

  710. to let it go.

  711. And

  712. the thing was,

  713. when she

  714. didn't manage

  715. to get the pencil

  716. or her parents

  717. said,

  718. no,

  719. you can't play

  720. with that now,

  721. all hell

  722. let loose.

  723. It was like

  724. the end of the world

  725. was happening.

  726. Life was collapsing

  727. all around her.

  728. But you know now,

  729. I don't know how many

  730. of you think

  731. that that was a really

  732. significant thing

  733. to get worried about.

  734. Because as you get older,

  735. perspective changes.

  736. And actually,

  737. you work through

  738. every single different

  739. stage of your life

  740. and as you look back,

  741. you get a different

  742. perspective on what

  743. is really important

  744. and significant

  745. in your life.

  746. And you know,

  747. that frozen pencil,

  748. I think it's fine.

  749. I mean,

  750. it can be important

  751. for her.

  752. It's creative.

  753. I mean,

  754. it can help her

  755. maybe develop

  756. some skills

  757. of writing

  758. or something.

  759. But in the grand

  760. scheme of things,

  761. it's secondary.

  762. It's not primary.

  763. It's not the most

  764. important thing.

  765. And for us,

  766. if you think about

  767. the plans that you

  768. are making in your life,

  769. what are the things

  770. that you consider

  771. to be ultimate

  772. at the moment?

  773. It may be short term,

  774. it may be long term,

  775. it may be just getting

  776. your to-do list done

  777. this week.

  778. It may be getting a spouse,

  779. it may be booking a holiday,

  780. it could be anything,

  781. but those things

  782. can sometimes become

  783. the center of our world.

  784. And if you were to take

  785. God's perspective,

  786. perspective,

  787. which is actually

  788. far bigger than ours,

  789. he might look at it

  790. and say,

  791. important,

  792. but not primary,

  793. not ultimate,

  794. not the most

  795. significant thing.

  796. Because you think

  797. what happens

  798. when you don't get

  799. what you want,

  800. when your plans

  801. don't quite work out.

  802. Because your reaction

  803. will show you

  804. whether something

  805. is primary or secondary.

  806. You know,

  807. when you are frustrated,

  808. when you're getting

  809. impatient with people,

  810. when you're having

  811. critical words

  812. towards other people

  813. because they're not

  814. doing what you want

  815. them to do,

  816. that may be showing

  817. you something

  818. about whether

  819. you're trusting

  820. in things which are

  821. secondary or ultimate.

  822. Because God wants us

  823. to put him

  824. as ultimate,

  825. to put growing

  826. in faith

  827. like God did

  828. with the spies

  829. as ultimate,

  830. to put our character,

  831. the way we reflect

  832. and image him

  833. in our lives

  834. as ultimate,

  835. to put loving him,

  836. loving others

  837. as ultimate.

  838. Everything else,

  839. important though it may be,

  840. is secondary.

  841. And many of us

  842. are stressed

  843. over things

  844. which are actually,

  845. you know,

  846. health,

  847. education,

  848. holidays,

  849. getting work done.

  850. And we come to

  851. church service

  852. on a Sunday

  853. and we're stressed

  854. out from everything

  855. which has gone wrong

  856. in the week

  857. and then we say,

  858. God,

  859. bless my plans

  860. this week

  861. because my world

  862. is out of control.

  863. And maybe God

  864. might say to us,

  865. stop trying to fit me

  866. into your plans

  867. and maybe start

  868. trying to think about

  869. how do I

  870. fit into God's plans?

  871. because the problem is

  872. if you

  873. try

  874. and make your plans

  875. ultimate,

  876. do you know what happens?

  877. Three things happen.

  878. One,

  879. we mess up

  880. our own plans.

  881. You know,

  882. the spies,

  883. they were

  884. completely incompetent.

  885. They bungled

  886. everything.

  887. They got everything

  888. wrong.

  889. And we can live

  890. under delusions

  891. that if I am

  892. competent enough,

  893. if I just do

  894. this path,

  895. if I just manage

  896. to succeed

  897. in my plan,

  898. get my kids

  899. to grow up

  900. to be like Einstein,

  901. be wise enough

  902. to get my right choices

  903. for my career move,

  904. then I'll be successful.

  905. And it's big things

  906. and little things.

  907. This week,

  908. Friday,

  909. I was going off

  910. to teach at

  911. Mayfoo.

  912. I'd prepared

  913. this amazing lesson.

  914. All the resources

  915. prepared.

  916. The whole lesson

  917. was based around

  918. certain resources

  919. and so I left

  920. and I was at

  921. Prince Edward

  922. on the MTR

  923. and suddenly

  924. I realized something.

  925. I'd forgotten

  926. all the resources

  927. that I planned.

  928. My whole lesson

  929. was based on

  930. these things.

  931. And at that moment,

  932. I was thinking,

  933. I have three hours

  934. with 16 students

  935. and I'm just going

  936. to have to talk

  937. at them

  938. because I've got nothing.

  939. I'm going to have

  940. to wing it

  941. because, you see,

  942. I make my plans

  943. but, you know,

  944. I mess up my plans.

  945. And if it's not you

  946. who mess them up,

  947. then you can be guaranteed

  948. somebody else

  949. is going to mess them up.

  950. You know,

  951. think about the story.

  952. Somebody told the king.

  953. Who was that little snitch

  954. who went to the king

  955. and told him?

  956. Wouldn't the whole

  957. of the story

  958. have been so much

  959. less stressful

  960. if they hadn't

  961. told the king?

  962. They could have

  963. just walked in,

  964. merely done a little

  965. look around,

  966. taken a few pictures

  967. and then gone away.

  968. It would have been fine.

  969. But God wasn't

  970. working like that.

  971. You know,

  972. I have this all the time.

  973. Big things,

  974. little things.

  975. I was going into

  976. the supermarket

  977. the other day.

  978. I was in a hurry.

  979. I had two minutes.

  980. I knew what I wanted.

  981. I went straight to get it,

  982. straight to the checkout.

  983. Just before I reached

  984. the checkout,

  985. a lady came in front of me

  986. who seemed she had been

  987. shopping,

  988. ready for Armageddon

  989. to come

  990. because she had produced

  991. everything in the whole store.

  992. So here I am.

  993. I'm in a hurry.

  994. I've got to get to a meeting.

  995. And so she slowly

  996. starts putting the things

  997. on the little conveyor belt.

  998. Time just stands still

  999. for a little while.

  1000. And as I think

1001. she's beginning to get through

1002. the next three years' supply,

  1003. then the lady,

  1004. the cashier,

  1005. suddenly finds

  1006. the barcode

  1007. doesn't work.

  1008. At that moment,

  1009. instead of being

  1010. a sensible person

  1011. looking at the barcode,

  1012. typing it in,

  1013. she decides

  1014. that she'd like

  1015. to have a conversation

  1016. about this

  1017. with every other employee

  1018. in the whole shop.

  1019. Twelve hours later,

  1020. she arrives back

  1021. with me fuming,

  1022. okay,

1023. my heart was not at peace.

  1024. And she,

  1025. then the lady

  1026. in front of me

  1027. says to her,

  1028. actually,

  1029. I don't think

  1030. I'll take it.

  1031. I'll leave it.

  1032. You see,

  1033. if you want

  1034. to make plans,

1035. if you don't mess them up,

  1036. somebody else

  1037. will mess them up

  1038. for you.

1039. And if it's not that,

  1040. then circumstances

1041. will mess the things up.

  1042. You know,

  1043. the spies,

  1044. they're trapped

  1045. on the roof,

  1046. lying under this

  1047. kind of grass,

  1048. like sticking out

  1049. of their ears,

1050. and they can't get on

  1051. with any spying.

  1052. Think about it,

  1053. when they go back

  1054. to Joshua,

1055. what are they going to say?

  1056. Hey, Josh,

  1057. you know,

1058. we had a few problems,

  1059. there wasn't a great view,

1060. but we'll just go back tomorrow,

1061. do a few street interviews,

1062. and just get a bit for you.

  1063. The circumstances

  1064. were not looking good.

1065. And we can have circumstances,

  1066. health problems,

  1067. the economic climate,

  1068. all kinds of things

  1069. can come in

1070. and can mess up your plans.

  1071. We can,

  1072. other people can,

  1073. circumstances can.

1074. But do you know what?

  1075. I think,

  1076. ultimately,

1077. behind many of those things,

  1078. actually,

  1079. God sometimes

  1080. wants to mess up

  1081. our plans.

  1082. Because,

  1083. I don't think

  1084. we want to

  1085. think about that,

  1086. but because

  1087. as you realize

  1088. how you react

  1089. when your plans

  1090. are messed up,

1091. it begins to show you

  1092. what you've really

  1093. been trusting in,

  1094. what you've really

  1095. made ultimate.

  1096. And what God

  1097. wants to do

  1098. is he wants

  1099. to expose

  1100. your heart to you

  1101. to show you

  1102. that maybe

  1103. you're living

  1104. for something,

  1105. that when you look

  1106. back at the end

  1107. of your life

  1108. in full perspective,

  1109. you're going to say,

  1110. actually,

  1111. that wasn't

  1112. really worth it.

  1113. That actually,

  1114. when you look back

  1115. at your plans,

  1116. maybe they were

  1117. just so narrow

  1118. like this,

  1119. and that God

  1120. had something

  1121. so much bigger

  1122. that he was

  1123. wanting to do.

  1124. How are you

  1125. fitting into

  1126. God's plans?

  1127. And maybe

  1128. think about this,

  1129. how are your plans

  1130. and what stops you

  1131. from loving people

  1132. as God's plan

  1133. calls us to,

  1134. to trusting him

  1135. as God's plan

  1136. calls you to,

  1137. that stops you

  1138. maybe noticing

  1139. the people around you?

  1140. Because you know,

  1141. when you're stressed,

  1142. in that situation,

  1143. in the supermarket,

  1144. I was not thinking

  1145. loving thoughts

  1146. towards other people.

  1147. Because you actually

  1148. get so wrapped up

  1149. with yourself

  1150. that you actually

  1151. lose sight

  1152. of everything else.

  1153. Society will tell you

  1154. success is found

  1155. in certain things.

  1156. It will tell you,

  1157. look at someone like

  1158. Li Ka-Shing

  1159. or Steve Jobs,

  1160. and they'll say,

  1161. earning that much money,

  1162. being that creative,

  1163. being that visionary,

  1164. that is success.

  1165. And you know,

  1166. they'll write books

  1167. about it.

  1168. You know,

  1169. people who become

  1170. successful,

1171. they always write a book

  1172. about how they

  1173. became successful.

  1174. Do you notice that?

  1175. And they say,

  1176. this is how you

  1177. should do it.

  1178. You know,

  1179. there's even a book,

  1180. Steve Jobs,

  1181. for kids.

  1182. Okay?

  1183. You can go out

  1184. and buy it.

  1185. You can, okay,

  1186. your life's kids

  1187. will be amazing

  1188. afterwards.

  1189. Because we look

  1190. at people

  1191. with those kind

  1192. of talents

  1193. and those things,

  1194. and we say,

  1195. that is success.

  1196. Society

  1197. applauds.

  1198. But in God's eyes,

  1199. is that success?

  1200. Did he use

  1201. his amazing talents

1202. for the glory of God?

1203. Did people look at him

  1204. and say,

  1205. wow,

  1206. that is a testimony

1207. to how good God is?

  1208. I don't know

  1209. Steve Jobs' heart,

  1210. but I do know

1211. that many of the people

  1212. in our society

  1213. that we say success,

  1214. God,

  1215. in his perspective,

  1216. which is so much

  1217. bigger than us,

  1218. says,

  1219. failed.

  1220. Says,

  1221. you missed it.

  1222. You lived for something

  1223. which was that big

  1224. when I wanted you

  1225. to live for something

  1226. that was that big.

1227. God may be messing up

  1228. some of your plans

  1229. at the moment

  1230. because he actually

  1231. wants you

  1232. to live

  1233. a truly,

  1234. lastingly,

  1235. successful life.

  1236. Not just getting

  1237. your frozen pencil,

  1238. whatever that is

  1239. for you

  1240. right at the moment.

  1241. But he wants

1242. to be able to say,

  1243. when you're on

  1244. your deathbed

  1245. and you look back

1246. and you have trusted him

1247. and you have obeyed him,

1248. he wants you to say,

1249. he wants to say to you,

  1250. well done,

  1251. good,

  1252. faithful,

  1253. servant.

  1254. You trusted me.

1255. You look to love me.

  1256. You look to love

  1257. the people around you.

  1258. In your messiness,

  1259. you're not perfect.

  1260. That,

  1261. in God's eyes,

  1262. is success.

  1263. So that's how

  1264. our plans work.

  1265. God's plan,

  1266. we've said it's

  1267. so much bigger.

  1268. Well, let's think about

  1269. how God's plan is.

1270. Just look at the mission.

1271. It seemed to go wrong,

  1272. but God was doing

  1273. something bigger.

  1274. What was God doing?

  1275. Joshua and the spies

  1276. thought they were

  1277. just taking the land.

  1278. But God

  1279. wanted to rescue

  1280. an outcast prostitute

  1281. and bring her

  1282. and her family

  1283. into

  1284. his family.

  1285. And more than that,

  1286. he was wanting

  1287. to fulfill

  1288. the promise,

  1289. remember,

  1290. that he'd made

  1291. to Abraham,

  1292. the promise that

  1293. blessing would go

  1294. to all the nations.

1295. Well, this is the beginning

  1296. of a microcosm

  1297. of how God

  1298. is doing that.

1299. And you might even say,

  1300. well, what about

  1301. all the other people?

  1302. God's judgment

  1303. came.

  1304. That's the bad news.

  1305. That's the hard part

  1306. of the Bible message.

  1307. The people of Jericho's

1308. sin had grown so bad,

  1309. God had waited

  1310. 500 years.

  1311. You look,

  1312. Genesis 15,

  1313. God says,

  1314. they're not ready yet.

1315. Their sin is not bad enough.

  1316. But he's waited

  1317. 500 years

  1318. for them to repent,

  1319. and they haven't.

  1320. And sin brings death.

1321. Same with Adam and Eve,

  1322. same with Passover.

  1323. But where there is

  1324. deserved judgment,

  1325. there is undeserved grace.

  1326. And the question,

  1327. I don't know why God

  1328. sometimes does

  1329. the things he does,

1330. but when I would look

  1331. in a bigger perspective,

  1332. and I don't have that yet,

  1333. I think my question

  1334. would be not

  1335. why does he judge

  1336. some people,

1337. but it would be more,

  1338. why does he save

  1339. some people?

  1340. Because would you

  1341. have planned

  1342. for an outcast prostitute

  1343. to come into

  1344. your community group?

  1345. Would you have chosen

  1346. that as your plan,

  1347. your technique,

  1348. your strategy?

  1349. Would you see

1350. the people that no one

  1351. else in the society

  1352. sees?

  1353. Probably we wouldn't,

  1354. but God does.

  1355. And part of living

  1356. in God's plan

  1357. is to begin

  1358. to get his heart

1359. and to see the people

  1360. that he sees.

  1361. People in your office,

  1362. people in your workplace,

1363. wherever he has placed you,

  1364. God has people

  1365. that he wants

  1366. to reach out to

  1367. and save.

1368. And if we're so wrapped up

  1369. in our plans,

  1370. do you know what?

  1371. We may miss out

  1372. on being part

1373. of what he's up to,

1374. which is so much bigger.

1375. I remember two years ago,

  1376. I got a Facebook message

  1377. from a name

  1378. that I didn't recognize.

  1379. And he said,

  1380. Hi, Chris.

  1381. And I was feeling

  1382. a bit suspicious

  1383. at that moment.

  1384. And he said,

  1385. Do you remember me?

1386. And I had to write back

  1387. and say,

  1388. No,

  1389. I have no clue

1390. who you are at all.

  1391. And he said,

  1392. Do you remember

  1393. ten years ago?

  1394. And I can't remember

  1395. five minutes ago,

  1396. so that was

  1397. a stupid question.

  1398. He said,

  1399. Do you remember

  1400. ten years ago?

  1401. Like,

  1402. I met you once

  1403. and you walked,

  1404. you just took me

  1405. to a dinner,

  1406. a lunch or something

1407. at some of your friend's house.

  1408. And he said,

  1409. You've probably forgotten.

1410. You said some things to me

1411. and do you know what?

  1412. That was the beginning

1413. of me starting a journey

  1414. of coming to Christ.

  1415. I'd forgotten

  1416. the guy completely.

  1417. I didn't have a clue

  1418. what was going on.

  1419. All I'd done

  1420. was just try and

  1421. I saw someone there

  1422. on their own

  1423. and God began

  1424. to do something

  1425. in his life

1426. which even if he'd never

1427. sent me the Facebook message,

1428. I would never have known.

  1429. But that's the kind

  1430. of God we have

1431. who has such a bigger perspective

  1432. that we may not

  1433. have a clue

  1434. what we're doing,

  1435. but if we're walking

  1436. in obedience to him,

  1437. he will multiply

  1438. exponentially

  1439. what you do.

  1440. And it gets

  1441. even bigger than this.

  1442. The story,

  1443. if you go to

  1444. Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  1445. it's a genealogy

  1446. of Jesus,

  1447. probably the bits

  1448. that you skip over.

  1449. Read that one.

  1450. It's the best genealogy

  1451. in the Bible

  1452. because do you know

  1453. who Jesus'

  1454. great, great, great, great,

1455. great, great, great, great, great,

  1456. great, great, great,

  1457. something grandmother

  1458. was?

  1459. Rahab.

  1460. God was working

  1461. something 1,500 years later

  1462. that not even Joshua

  1463. knew was going on,

  1464. that he was going

  1465. to use Rahab

  1466. to bring blessing

  1467. to these people

  1468. and he was going

  1469. to use that story

  1470. to bring about salvation

  1471. through Jesus

1472. to each one of you here.

1473. Any of you Jews here?

  1474. Maybe there's a few.

  1475. Fantastic.

  1476. Great.

  1477. Most of us

  1478. are not Jews.

  1479. God was working

  1480. something to take

  1481. the Jewish people,

  1482. to take Jesus,

  1483. to take Rahab

1484. and to take this story

  1485. and he wanted

  1486. to multiply it

  1487. so that you

  1488. and you

  1489. and you

  1490. would come

  1491. into relationship

  1492. with himself.

1493. Would you have planned that?

  1494. If you're following

1495. just your own little plans,

  1496. they're going

  1497. to be that big.

  1498. You follow God's plans,

  1499. that plans

  1500. which,

  1501. you know,

  1502. sometimes

  1503. when everything

  1504. in the world

  1505. seems to be going

  1506. absolutely wrong,

  1507. do you know

  1508. it's going

  1509. absolutely right

  1510. in God's eyes?

  1511. You know,

  1512. you may think

  1513. that the things

  1514. that are happening

  1515. in your life

  1516. are out of control

  1517. but there's not been

  1518. one second

  1519. in the whole

  1520. of history

  1521. which have been

  1522. out of control

  1523. in God's plans

  1524. because God

  1525. and when we

  1526. meet with him

  1527. face to face

  1528. we will look back

  1529. from his vantage point

  1530. and we'll say

  1531. why did you allow

  1532. that to happen?

  1533. Why did you allow

  1534. that woman

  1535. in the supermarket

  1536. to be there?

  1537. Why did you allow

  1538. all those things

  1539. sometimes to be

  1540. taken away from me?

  1541. Why did you allow

  1542. this and that

  1543. and that

  1544. and that

  1545. and then you'll

  1546. be able to see

  1547. wow,

  1548. you were doing

  1549. something so much

  1550. greater

  1551. because you're

  1552. that kind of God.

  1553. That's why

  1554. he calls us

  1555. who are just like

  1556. those bungling spies

  1557. who are just like

  1558. Rahab

  1559. who are not adequate

  1560. who are not competent

  1561. who even though

  1562. we think we are

  1563. are deluded in that

  1564. and yet

  1565. he wants to come

  1566. into our life

  1567. in the same way

  1568. and use you.

  1569. so the question is

  1570. what are the little

  1571. frozen pencils

  1572. that you're holding

1573. on to at the moment?

1574. Do you want to live

  1575. for something

  1576. so much bigger

  1577. than just your plans?

  1578. Those plans are good

  1579. maybe

  1580. but maybe they're secondary

  1581. if you put

  1582. what God wants

  1583. and remember

  1584. what his heart is

  1585. his heart

  1586. is for you

  1587. to trust him

  1588. for you

  1589. to have a relationship

  1590. with him

  1591. for you

  1592. to respond

  1593. even in the chaos

  1594. by saying

  1595. I don't know

  1596. what you're doing God

  1597. but I trust you

  1598. and if you begin

  1599. to see that

  1600. he wants you

  1601. to open your eyes

  1602. to see the people

  1603. around you

1604. how you can love them

1605. how you can reach out

  1606. to the outsiders

  1607. that nobody else

1608. wants to reach out to

  1609. do you know what?

  1610. You'll look back

  1611. and you will not

  1612. have wasted your life.

  1613. God will say

  1614. well done

  1615. good faithful servant

  1616. because

1617. I will get the glory

  1618. from your life

  1619. and he's so much

  1620. more worthy

  1621. than we

  1622. as bungling spies

  1623. are.

  1624. Let's pray.

  1625. Father forgive me

  1626. forgive us

  1627. where we

  1628. we do get

  1629. so wrapped up

  1630. in so many things

  1631. we get wrapped up

  1632. in

  1633. just the things

  1634. of life

  1635. which happen

  1636. we think

  1637. that our plans

  1638. are going to bring

  1639. us security

  1640. for the future

  1641. we think

  1642. that our plans

1643. are going to give us

  1644. security for the present

  1645. we think

  1646. that we can

  1647. make everything

  1648. happen

  1649. and Lord

  1650. we strive

  1651. after success

  1652. in so many

  1653. different things

  1654. and yet

  1655. we so often

  1656. fail to see

  1657. Lord

  1658. I so often

  1659. fail to see

  1660. that you want

  1661. me to trust you

  1662. that you want

  1663. to open my eyes

  1664. to see

  1665. the people around me

  1666. things which

  1667. maybe the society

  1668. will not say

  1669. that that's glorious

  1670. but you will say

  1671. that is beautiful

  1672. Father

  1673. as you said

  1674. to Joshua

  1675. you told him

  1676. to keep

  1677. remembering your word

  1678. keep meditating

  1679. on it Lord

  1680. because your word

  1681. is what will bring

  1682. us perspective

  1683. Lord I pray

1684. help us as your people

  1685. to be a people

  1686. who know your word

  1687. who love your word

  1688. who actually want

  1689. to just

  1690. saturate ourselves

  1691. in it

  1692. to obey

  1693. what you call us

  1694. to do

  1695. whatever you're

  1696. calling us

  1697. to do

  1698. right now

  1699. because we know

  1700. that you have

  1701. something so much

  1702. greater

  1703. even though

  1704. we're so tempted

  1705. to find success

  1706. everybody else

  1707. tells us

  1708. that this is

  1709. where life

  1710. is found

  1711. Lord help us

  1712. to remember

  1713. that you're

  1714. greater

  1715. you're beautiful

  1716. thank you

  1717. for saving us

  1718. thank you

  1719. you didn't just

  1720. save us

  1721. to be

  1722. left on the

  1723. sidelines

  1724. of history

  1725. but you saved

  1726. us to invite

  1727. us in

  1728. to what you're

  1729. up to

  1730. in history

  1731. let us

  1732. be a church

  1733. which we know

  1734. we are here

  1735. for such a time

  1736. as this

  1737. we are here

  1738. not by accident

  1739. but by your

  1740. plan

  1741. to be a light

  1742. in this city

  1743. to be a light

  1744. in our office

  1745. to be a light

  1746. in our families

  1747. please give us

  1748. the strength

  1749. help us

  1750. to be courageous

  1751. and strong

  1752. in obeying

  1753. whatever you're

  1754. calling us to do

  1755. we love you

  1756. you're amazing

  1757. amen
