  1. Father, you know the state of our hearts and the state of our minds and the state of our wills.

  2. Father, you see us perfectly and you see how much we deceive ourselves and how we are confused about ourselves

  3. and how we are not aware of our deception or our confusion, but think we are wise.

  4. Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would gently but deeply fall upon us

  5. so that we might see ourselves, begin more and more to see ourselves as we really are.

  6. But Father, please do not reveal ourselves to ourselves just in a naked way.

  7. But Father, help us to see ourselves and understand ourselves according to your word

  8. and by the great work that your Son did on the cross for us when he died for us.

  9. So Father, may your Holy Spirit fall upon us,

  10. helping us to see ourselves as we see and hear and understand your word

  11. and draw us to Jesus.

  12. This we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  13. Please be seated.

  14. Why is God absent so often in our lives?

  15. Why, O Lord, do you stand far off?

  16. Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

  17. And why is it that not only do many of us experience God's absence as anguish

  18. at many times in our lives,

  19. maybe some of you who are here this morning are experiencing the absence of God

  20. as anguish or as despair,

  21. but why is it that often in church on a Sunday morning

  22. or in small groups throughout the week,

  23. we aren't even sort of allowed to be honest about the fact

  24. that we are experiencing some anguish

  25. because it seems as if God is absent.

  26. And it's even made worse

  27. because it seems that God is absent to us.

  28. But when we come on a Sunday morning

  29. or maybe we meet our good friend at work

  30. or a family member

  31. and God seems to be so present to them,

  32. yet he seems to be so absent to us.

  33. And why, some of you are wondering,

  34. is George even talking about this on a Sunday morning?

  35. I'm asking this question

  36. because those are the two questions

  37. that the psalm that John read

  38. just a few minutes ago,

  39. they, the psalm, God's word,

  40. asks that question.

  41. So it would be very, very helpful to me

  42. and to you

  43. if you open your Bibles right now

  44. and turn to Psalm 10

  45. and let's look at that psalm

  46. and see the question that the psalm asks

  47. and see how it is

  48. that God, in his word,

  49. responds to that question.

  50. And if you've forgotten your Bibles,

  51. there's always some Bibles here

  52. at the front of the church.

  53. I don't know if there's always Bibles

  54. at that door when you enter.

  55. There's something wrong with the mic.

  56. Is it just in my ears?

  57. Just my ears?

  58. Okay.

  59. And that's fine.

  60. And if, or if you come in that door,

  61. there's always some Bibles

  62. that we can give you.

  63. But Psalm 10,

  64. sort of in the middle of the Bible

  65. or you can look it up in the index

  66. and listen again to how the psalm began.

  67. And the psalm began this way.

  68. Why, O Lord, do you stand far away?

  69. Why do you hide yourself

  70. in times of trouble?

  71. That's how the psalm begins.

  72. And it means,

  73. if you accept as I do,

  74. Jesus' understanding and teaching

  75. of the Bible,

  76. which is that the Bible

  77. was ultimately written by God,

  78. it means that God

  79. is giving us permission

  80. to ask this question of him,

  81. to say to him,

  82. why, O Lord,

  83. do you stand far away?

  84. Why do you hide yourself

  85. in times of trouble?

  86. Why are you absent, God?

  87. For some of us,

  88. this is maybe a very,

  89. very profound intellectual question.

  90. For many people in our culture,

  91. one of the main reasons

  92. why they will not believe

  93. in the God of the Bible

  94. is because of the existence

  95. of evil in the world

  96. and God seeming to stand

  97. far away at times of trouble.

  98. For others,

  99. it's not an intellectual question

  100. per se,

  101. but it might be a very

  102. lived question right now

  103. that you're going through

  104. some type of trouble

  105. and God just seems to be hiding

  106. or he seems to be very far away.

  107. And the Bible,

  108. believe it or not,

  109. actually has an awful lot

  110. to say about the absence

  111. and the hiddenness of God.

  112. It's very nuanced

  113. and it's very wise.

  114. And this psalm

  115. isn't going to cover

  116. everything that the Bible

  117. says about it,

  118. but this psalm

  119. raises the question

  120. and one sort of form

  121. or subset

  122. of that type of experience

  123. and question

  124. and addresses it.

  125. And so this,

  126. the very, very first point

  127. this morning is this.

  128. Because this is in the Bible,

  129. this isn't just George

  130. coming at it

  131. from a therapeutic sense,

  132. you know,

  133. because I have a degree

  134. in pastoral counseling,

  135. you know,

  136. 100 million years ago

  137. and I'm asking

  138. some type of therapeutic question.

  139. The Bible raises this question.

  140. So here's the very first thing.

  141. True faith can include

  142. asking the living God

  143. honest questions.

  144. True faith can include

  145. asking the living God

  146. honest questions.

  147. You know,

  148. often in life,

  149. stereotypes have,

  150. I mean,

  151. they're always dangerous

  152. stereotypes,

  153. but on the other hand,

  154. often stereotypes

  155. have some truth

  156. in reality.

  157. And, you know,

  158. it's not a big stretch.

  159. Probably many of,

  160. maybe some of us here

  161. feel the same way,

  162. but many of us

  163. have probably come

  164. in contact with people

  165. who say,

  166. don't doubt,

  167. don't even say that,

  168. don't even raise

  169. that question.

  170. What you need to do

  171. is you need to spend

  172. more time in praise.

  173. You need to spend

  174. more time in prayer.

  175. You need to spend

  176. more time in church.

  177. You need to give more money

  178. to God in tithing.

  179. You need to spend

  180. more time with the poor.

  181. Don't even ask

  182. that question.

  183. Don't even let it

  184. into your mind.

  185. Don't even let it

  186. start to come to you

  187. at all.

  188. You just got to

  189. push it away

  190. and keep going forward.

  191. And I've met

  192. people like that.

  193. And maybe at some time

  194. in my life,

  195. I was a person like that.

  196. Maybe it'd be one of

  197. those things that

  198. in heaven,

  199. God's going to replay

  200. those times in my life

  201. that I said something

  202. like that to somebody.

  203. And I,

  204. well,

  205. in heaven,

  206. I'll get over the shame

  207. pretty quickly

  208. because I'm in heaven,

  209. right?

  210. But it probably

  211. would be embarrassing.

  212. And so it's very,

  213. very easy for churches,

  214. often the churches

  215. that seem to be

  216. the most faithful,

  217. to say that you're

  218. not allowed to ask

  219. honest questions.

  220. You're not even allowed

  221. to raise the question

  222. of why God seems

  223. to be absent.

  224. But as we see here

  225. from Psalm 1,

  226. it's in God's word

  227. that true faith

  228. can include

  229. asking the living God

  230. honest questions.

  231. So,

  232. God has said,

  233. we can ask,

  234. why, O Lord,

  235. do you stand far away?

  236. Why do you hide yourself

  237. in times of trouble?

  238. So what is the Bible saying?

  239. Like,

  240. how does it handle it?

  241. Well,

  242. let's look.

  243. Here's how it goes.

  244. In arrogance,

  245. the wicked

  246. hotly pursue the poor,

  247. verse 2,

  248. let them be caught

  249. in the schemes

  250. that they have devised.

  251. For the wicked

  252. boasts of the desires

  253. of the soul,

  254. and the one greedy

  255. for gain curses

  256. and renounces the Lord.

  257. In the pride of his face,

  258. the wicked does not seek him.

  259. All his thoughts are

  260. there is no God.

  261. His ways prosper

  262. at all times.

  263. Your judgments are on high,

  264. out of his sight.

  265. For all his foes,

  266. he puffs at them.

  267. He says in his heart,

  268. I shall not be moved.

  269. Throughout all generations,

  270. I shall not meet adversity.

  271. Let's just stop for a second.

  272. Let's be honest.

  273. This is a very disappointing answer.

  274. Like,

  275. if we're honest with ourselves,

  276. we were hoping

  277. for something better

  278. from God.

  279. God's word.

  280. Now,

  281. that's another type of thing

  282. that we feel

  283. very uncomfortable

  284. acknowledging.

  285. But if we're honest,

  286. this isn't going anywhere

  287. that we want to go

  288. particularly.

  289. In fact,

  290. very quickly,

  291. our eyes glaze over,

  292. our ears glaze over,

  293. our mind glazes over,

  294. and we internally

  295. are saying,

  296. whatever,

  297. to God's word.

  298. Whatever.

  299. Yada, yada, yada, yada.

  300. But you see,

  301. here's actually

  302. one of the very,

  303. very powerful things

  304. about God's word.

  305. Why am I disappointed?

  306. Why am I disappointed

  307. by what's happening?

  308. I'm going to suggest

  309. one of three reasons

  310. why we're disappointed.

  311. The first reason

  312. is because,

  313. especially for those of us

  314. who are suffering,

  315. what were we hoping

  316. that would happen?

  317. we were hoping

  318. that God would do

  319. a miracle

  320. so that when we leave

  321. this church,

  322. our abusive husband,

  323. the abusive boss,

  324. that we would go home

  325. and we would get news

  326. that in Iraq,

  327. ISIS has been completely

  328. and utterly annihilated,

  329. and the survivors

  330. are building churches

  331. and giving money

  332. to the people

  333. whose kids

  334. they beheaded.

  335. And on one hand,

  336. we're hoping that

  337. when something's going to happen,

  338. so that there's a miracle,

  339. and at the same time,

  340. if we're feeling

  341. God's absence,

  342. we would get something

  343. like Prozac

  344. that would come into us

  345. and completely

  346. and utterly

  347. make us feel good.

  348. The other thing

  349. some of us

  350. are maybe hoping

  351. is that God

  352. would give us

  353. a knock-down,

  354. drag-down,

  355. guaranteed,

  356. block-buster,

  357. philosophical answer

  358. so we could refute

  359. Hitchens and Dawkins

  360. and Harris

  361. and our boss

  362. and our nephew

  363. and everybody else,

  364. and we could just say,

  365. you just read that,

  366. that's going to completely

  367. and utterly refute

  368. everything you said.

  369. Ha-ha!

  370. Ha-ha!

  371. Or the third thing

  372. we were hoping

  373. might happen

  374. is secret knowledge,

  375. that God would give us

  376. secret knowledge

  377. about what was going on

  378. so we could be

  379. insiders with God,

  380. and the rest

  381. of the hoi polloi

  382. don't really know

  383. what's going on,

  384. but I'm part

  385. of the Illuminati.

  386. I know what's

  387. really going on.

  388. Now maybe I'm just

  389. vastly more sinful

  390. than the rest of you,

  391. but if when you start

  392. to read verses 2 to 11

  393. you realize

  394. that your mind

  395. is wandering,

  396. it's showing

  397. that you're disappointed

  398. in God,

  399. and the Bible

  400. in a sense

  401. is saying to us,

  402. examine yourself.

  403. Why is it

  404. that you think

  405. that wisdom itself

  406. is not wise?

  407. See, here's

  408. the second point.

  409. When God's word

  410. disappoints me,

  411. I do not have

  412. to kiss my brains

  413. goodbye

  414. or become cynical.

  415. I am being invited

  416. to carefully examine

  417. God's word

  418. and myself.

  419. When God's word

  420. disappoints me,

  421. I do not have

  422. to kiss my brains

  423. goodbye

  424. or become cynical.

  425. I am being invited

  426. to carefully examine

  427. God's word

  428. and myself.

  429. You see,

  430. God's word

  431. examines us.

  432. I can't remember,

  433. it was one of the novels

  434. I read while I was

  435. on holidays,

  436. but somebody said

  437. that, you know,

  438. with Facebook

  439. and Twitter

  440. and all that,

  441. I'm not dumping,

  442. okay,

  443. Facebook and Twitter

  444. and all that stuff,

  445. that in our age,

  446. what we do

  447. is we exhibit ourselves

  448. but don't examine ourselves.

  449. That we like to exhibit

  450. what goes on

  451. but we don't like to examine

  452. what's going on.

  453. And the Bible here,

  454. in fact,

  455. the beginning of God's

  456. answer to this question

  457. and what he's going

  458. to do in our lives

  459. comes from us

  460. recognizing that

  461. we're disappointed

  462. because as soon as

  463. we realize we're

  464. disappointed,

  465. we can start to ask

  466. ourselves the question,

  467. well,

  468. why is it that I'm

  469. disappointed in this answer?

  470. Why am I disappointed

  471. with where God

  472. is going in this?

  473. And then I maybe

  474. start to realize

  475. that maybe I didn't

  476. identify one of the

  477. three reasons.

  478. Maybe your reasons

  479. are a little bit different

  480. but all of us

  481. will probably have

  482. something in common

  483. which is actually

  484. fairly shocking

  485. to understand,

  486. especially for some

  487. of us who are clergy

  488. who have been

  489. Christians for a long

  490. time and it is this,

  491. when I come to God's

  492. word,

  493. I often believe

  494. that I am God

  495. and I want to see

  496. if God's word

  497. meets my standards.

  498. And when it doesn't,

  499. I'm disappointed.

  500. And I never stop,

  501. often don't stop

  502. to think

  503. that I am acting

  504. like I am

  505. over God's word,

  506. not learning

  507. from God's word.

  508. In fact,

  509. actually,

  510. that starts to begin

  511. a little bit

  512. of an insight

  513. into us

  514. as to how hard

  515. it is for God

  516. to actually,

  517. that when God

  518. hears our question,

  519. part of what

  520. he's wanting to do

  521. is make me start

  522. to realize,

  523. one moment,

  524. do I understand?

  525. Can I understand?

  526. Like,

  527. even when God

  528. starts to speak to me,

  529. if I just dismiss

  530. and write off

  531. what he says,

  532. what's going on there?

  533. So,

  534. in fact,

  535. if you think about it

  536. like this,

  537. like one of the fears

  538. that we have,

  539. even maybe with what

  540. I'm saying about

  541. examining God's word

  542. when we're disappointed

  543. by God,

  544. that it's an invitation

  545. for us to examine

  546. God's word

  547. and to have God's word

  548. in a sense examine me,

  549. part of our innate fear

  550. is that God

  551. will crush me

  552. if I do that.

  553. But this passage

  554. of scripture

  555. doesn't crush us.

  556. It doesn't crush us

  557. at all.

  558. In fact,

  559. let's go back

  560. to verse two

  561. and just pay a little

  562. bit of attention,

  563. especially for the

  564. first three verses

  565. about something

  566. very subtle

  567. that goes on.

  568. Now that we've realized

  569. that we're a bit

  570. disappointed with this

  571. and maybe God's

  572. asking me to examine

  573. myself as to

  574. my disappointment

  575. and actually

  576. give God

  577. the benefit

  578. the doubt

  579. that maybe

  580. he has some wisdom

  581. to speak

  582. into my situation.

  583. So let's go back

  584. to verse two.

  585. In arrogance,

  586. the wicked,

  587. and just remember,

  588. I mean,

  589. it's just so you know,

  590. wicked here

  591. doesn't mean

  592. really cool,

  593. I have to have it.

  594. It means like bad.

  595. Okay?

  596. It means like

  597. rancid meat.

  598. One year

  599. when we lived

  600. in our rectory,

  601. Louise and I

  602. went on holidays

  603. and when we came back,

  604. the power had gone out

  605. while we were gone

  606. and it had been out

  607. for several days

  608. and then it came on

  609. and all of the meat

  610. in our freezer

  611. had gone bad.

  612. It was rancid.

  613. I mean,

  614. if you open the freezer up,

  615. it would make you gag

  616. and that's how you have

  617. to understand wicked.

  618. Not really cool,

  619. I got to have it,

  620. I wish I could do it.

  621. So in arrogance,

  622. the wicked

  623. hotly pursue the poor

  624. like a sign

  625. of being evil

  626. and having evil

  627. within us

  628. is that we pursue

  629. the poor

  630. to take advantage

  631. of them

  632. and then the psalmist

  633. says,

  634. let them be caught

  635. in the schemes

  636. that they have devised.

  637. For the wicked

  638. boasts of the desires

  639. of the soul

  640. and the one greedy

  641. for gain

  642. curses

  643. and renounces

  644. the Lord

  645. in the pride

  646. of his face

  647. the wicked

  648. does not seek

  649. God

  650. all his thoughts

  651. are there is

  652. no God.

  653. In the original language,

  654. you see that word

  655. in verse 4,

  656. thoughts,

  657. all his thoughts

  658. are there is no God

  659. and look up to verse 2,

  660. the second part,

  661. let them be caught

  662. in the schemes

  663. that they have devised.

  664. In the original language,

  665. that's the same word.

  666. it's the same word.

  667. It could be translated

  668. as all his schemes

  669. are there is no God.

  670. It's actually

  671. a very, very clever thing

  672. that one of the things

  673. that can happen

  674. to us as individuals,

  675. we might still have

  676. a very, very high IQ

  677. and we might still

  678. be unbelievably good

  679. at using language,

  680. but what characterizes

  681. what's going on

  682. between our two ears

  683. is scheming,

  684. not thinking.

  685. In thinking,

  686. we want to know.

  687. We're curious.

  688. In scheming,

  689. we want to do

  690. something to others

  691. in such a way

  692. that we come out

  693. on top

  694. and it's easy

  695. for us

  696. to have times

  697. in our lives

  698. where we think

  699. we're thinking

  700. and we are thinking,

  701. but it's not thinking,

  702. it's scheming.

  703. And we can be unaware

  704. of the fact

  705. that that's even

  706. going on within us.

  707. And in verse 3,

  708. it's impossible

  709. to be translated

  710. properly into English.

  711. For the wicked

  712. boasts of the desires

  713. of the soul

  714. and the one greedy

  715. for gain

  716. curses and renounces

  717. the Lord.

  718. It's all,

  719. it's idol language

  720. and worship language

  721. and it's as if

  722. that there's a state

  723. of affairs

  724. for what the Bible

  725. is calling wicked

  726. that there's a type

  727. of a worshipping

  728. of the soul,

  729. worshipping of my own soul

  730. and worshipping gain

  731. and it's as if

  732. that there's a way

  733. of me starting

  734. to organize my life

  735. whereby I not only

  736. seek to exalt myself

  737. and worship myself,

  738. but I want to worship

  739. two gods.

  740. I want to worship myself

  741. and I want to worship

  742. prophet

  743. and I believe

  744. that there's such a way

  745. of worshipping

  746. both me

  747. and prophet

  748. that's going to be

  749. good for prophet

  750. and going to be good

  751. for me.

  752. And so it is

  753. that when the prophet

  754. is either just getting

  755. the final word

  756. in the conversation

  757. or getting my way

  758. in my relationship

  759. or getting my way

  760. at work

  761. or making more money

  762. that if I don't get

  763. those things happening

  764. I'm depressed,

  765. I'm anxious,

  766. I'm frustrated

  767. because it's confounding

  768. my idol worship

  769. and even,

  770. and it's impossible

  771. to translate properly

  772. into English

  773. and when it says

  774. and the one for greedy,

  775. sorry,

  776. in verse 3

  777. and the one greedy

  778. for gain curses

  779. and renounces the Lord

  780. it's actually,

  781. it's actually

  782. in the original language

  783. it's actually saying

  784. blesses God

  785. but in a particular context.

  786. It's exactly like

  787. what we do

  788. if you meet somebody

  789. who's stupid

  790. or you know somebody

  791. maybe at work

  792. or in your family

  793. they've done something

  794. really,

  795. really,

  796. really,

  797. really dumb,

  798. okay?

  799. And they come into the room

  800. after they've done

  801. something really,

  802. really dumb

  803. and you say to everybody

  804. look,

  805. here's genius.

  806. Okay?

  807. So it appears

  808. as if you're complimenting

  809. but everybody knows

  810. in that context

  811. you're just rubbing

  812. that person's face in it

  813. and that's what's trying

  814. to be communicated

  815. in verse 3

  816. that there's a way

  817. for us

  818. to so worship

  819. other things

  820. that what we're saying

  821. when we look at God

  822. at all is

  823. oh yeah,

  824. there's God,

  825. look how just he is,

  826. oh,

  827. look how great God is,

  828. ha, ha, ha,

  829. dummy.

  830. And we might think

  831. that we never do that.

  832. I'm going to get to that

  833. in a second

  834. but here's the main thing

  835. about these first three verses.

  836. Remember,

  837. look at verse 1 again,

  838. anguish.

  839. Why, oh Lord,

  840. do you stand far away?

  841. There's anguish.

  842. Why do you hide yourself

  843. in times of trouble?

  844. And now look at verse 4,

  845. in the pride of his face

  846. the wicked does not seek him.

  847. All his thoughts are,

  848. there is no God.

  849. And the person who says that

  850. is happy,

  851. not in anguish.

  852. Here's the point.

  853. I am divided

  854. and confused.

  855. Sometimes I am in anguish

  856. over God's absence

  857. and sometimes I consciously

  858. and unconsciously

  859. organize my world

  860. to keep God absent.

  861. I am in anguish

  862. and I am in anguish

  863. over God's absence

  864. and sometimes I consciously

  865. and unconsciously

  866. organize my world

  867. to keep God absent.

  868. And I am not aware of it.

  869. You doubt it?

  870. When a young man

  871. or a man of any age

  872. is looking at pornography,

  873. does he want God

  874. to show up?

  875. When you're telling a lie,

  876. do you want God

  877. to show up?

  878. When you're slandering

  879. somebody,

  880. do you want God

  881. to show up?

  882. When you're cheating

  883. on your taxes,

  884. do you want God

  885. to show up?

  886. When you're selling

  887. something on Kijiji

  888. and you tell the person

  889. it's been lightly used

  890. and it's two years old

  891. and it's actually heavily used

  892. and it's ten years old,

  893. do you want God

  894. to show up?

  895. When you're overspending

  896. on your credit card

  897. to buy things

  898. because you're feeling depressed,

  899. do you want God

  900. to show up?

  901. When you read a Bible text

  902. and it tells you to tithe

  903. and you don't want to do it,

  904. do you want God

  905. to show up?

  906. You see,

  907. this psalm

  908. is taking us

  909. in a very

  910. startling direction.

  911. You see,

  912. and we'll see it

  913. as we go on,

  914. at no point in time

  915. does this psalm

  916. diminish the fact

  917. that at times

  918. in my life

  919. I experience

  920. God's absence

  921. as anguish.

  922. The psalm

  923. is never going

  924. to deny

  925. that experience

  926. at all.

  927. and it's never

  928. going to deny

  929. that it can be

  930. a very honest

  931. question I ask

  932. in my anguish

  933. about God.

  934. But now the psalm

  935. is starting

  936. to force me

  937. to examine myself

  938. and I realize

  939. that I judge God

  940. to see whether

  941. he's going to meet

  942. my standards.

  943. I realize

  944. that in fact

  945. there's ways

  946. in my world

  947. and in my life

  948. that I organize

  949. my time,

  950. I organize

  951. my career,

  952. I organize

  953. my family,

  954. I organize

  955. my thought life,

  956. that there's things

  957. in my life

  958. that I organize

  959. in such a way

  960. so that God

  961. will be absent.

  962. And I would

  963. experience anguish

  964. if he showed

  965. up in those

  966. times.

  967. So it's actually

  968. not a very simple

  969. question to ask

  970. God.

  971. Why do you

  972. stand far away?

  973. And the Bible

  974. starts to have us

  975. examine ourselves

  976. but not in a way

  977. to crush us

  978. as the psalm

  979. will continue

  980. to go on.

  981. You see,

  982. he's not

  983. blowing off

  984. my question.

  985. He's going

  986. to more

  987. subtly

  988. continue

  989. to probe

  990. my desires.

  991. Let's look

  992. how he continues

  993. to subtly

  994. probe

  995. our desires.

  996. I think we

  997. got up to

  998. verse 4.

  999. Let's look

  1000. at verse 5.

  1001. And this,

  1002. by the way,

  1003. is going to be

  1004. something very,

  1005. very,

  1006. very shocking

  1007. to us Canadians

  1008. in our culture.

  1009. The direction

  1010. that this psalm

  1011. is going to

  1012. go is

  1013. completely

  1014. and utterly

  1015. shocking

  1016. and counterintuitive.

  1017. Here's how it

  1018. goes.

  1019. Verse 5.

  1020. He's now

  1021. talking about

  1022. the person

  1023. who says

  1024. there is no

  1025. God

  1026. and likes it.

  1027. It's convenient

  1028. for my life

  1029. to say

  1030. there is no

  1031. God.

  1032. Verse 5.

  1033. His ways

  1034. prosper at all

  1035. times.

  1036. Your judgments

  1037. are on high,

  1038. out of his

  1039. sight.

  1040. As for all

  1041. his foes,

  1042. he puffs at

  1043. them,

  1044. outruns

  1045. them,

  1046. blows them

  1047. off.

  1048. He says

  1049. in his

  1050. heart,

  1051. verse 6,

  1052. I shall

  1053. not be

  1054. moved

  1055. throughout

  1056. all

  1057. generations.

  1058. I shall

  1059. not meet

  1060. adversity.

  1061. That's

  1062. his motto.

  1063. That's

  1064. his organizing

  1065. principle

  1066. of his

  1067. life.

  1068. That's

  1069. how his

  1070. religion

  1071. is

  1072. organized.

  1073. That's

  1074. how his

  1075. spirituality

  1076. is

  1077. organized.

  1078. That's

  1079. how her

  1080. secular

  1081. life is

  1082. all

  1083. organized

  1084. throughout

  1085. all

  1086. generations.

  1087. I shall

  1088. not

  1089. meet

  1090. adversity.

  1091. Verse 7.

  1092. His mouth

  1093. is filled

  1094. with cursing

  1095. and deceit

  1096. and oppression.

  1097. Sounds hard.

  1098. We'll get to it

  1099. in a moment.

  1100. Under his

  1101. tongue

  1102. are mischief

  1103. and iniquity.

  1104. He sits

  1105. in ambush

  1106. in the

  1107. villages

  1108. and hiding

  1109. places.

  1110. He murders

  1111. the innocent.

  1112. One moment.

  1113. This is the

  1114. person who

  1115. said there

  1116. is no

  1117. God?

  1118. Verse 8

  1119. continues.

  1120. His eyes

  1121. stealthily

  1122. watch for

  1123. the helpless.

  1124. He lurks

  1125. in ambush

  1126. like a lion

  1127. in his

  1128. thicket.

  1129. He lurks

  1130. that he

  1131. may seize

  1132. the poor.

  1133. He seizes

  1134. the poor

  1135. when he

  1136. draws him

  1137. into his

  1138. net.

  1139. The helpless

  1140. are crushed,

  1141. sink down,

  1142. and fall

  1143. by his

  1144. might.

  1145. He says

  1146. in his

  1147. heart,

  1148. God has

  1149. forgotten.

  1150. He has

  1151. hidden his

  1152. face.

  1153. He will

  1154. never see

  1155. it.

  1156. His life

  1157. is organized

  1158. around the

  1159. absence of

  1160. God.

  1161. And surely,

  1162. as this text

  1163. goes on,

  1164. it's way

  1165. over the

  1166. top.

  1167. It's way

  1168. over the

  1169. top.

  1170. One of

  1171. the unfortunate

  1172. parts about

  1173. me being

  1174. on holidays

  1175. is that I

  1176. actually had

  1177. very few

  1178. conversations

  1179. about God

  1180. because one

  1181. of the main

  1182. ways I get

  1183. into conversations

  1184. about God

  1185. is I go to

  1186. a Starbucks

  1187. to work on

  1188. my sermon,

  1189. and when you

  1190. open your

  1191. Bible and

  1192. work on a

  1193. sermon in a

  1194. place like

  1195. Starbucks,

  1196. it often

  1197. provokes

  1198. different

  1199. conversations.

  1200. And there's

  1201. this one

  1202. conversation

  1203. that I had

  1204. with a fellow

  1205. a couple

  1206. of months

  1207. ago,

  1208. and he

  1209. was talking

  1210. about how

  1211. to be

  1212. spiritual,

  1213. not

  1214. religious,

  1215. was vastly

  1216. better.

  1217. Why is it

  1218. better to be

  1219. spiritual and

  1220. not religious?

  1221. Because there's

  1222. no God

  1223. judging you.

  1224. That's what he

  1225. said to me.

  1226. I'm not saying

  1227. that's what he

  1228. said to me.

  1229. And then he

  1230. said,

  1231. but it's even

  1232. better to

  1233. believe in

  1234. no God

  1235. whatsoever.

  1236. In fact,

  1237. you can be

  1238. spiritual without

  1239. any type of

  1240. God existing.

  1241. It's far

  1242. better for

  1243. there to

  1244. be no

  1245. God,

  1246. because when

  1247. there's no

  1248. God,

  1249. that's when

  1250. prosperity

  1251. happens.

  1252. That's when

  1253. freedom

  1254. happens.

  1255. That the

  1256. more you

  1257. cast off

  1258. any notion

  1259. of your

  1260. God,

  1261. the more

  1262. free you

  1263. are,

  1264. the more

  1265. you will

  1266. prosper.

  1267. That's what

  1268. he said to

  1269. me.

  1270. And I

  1271. said to

  1272. him,

  1273. well,

  1274. what about

  1275. the Soviet

  1276. Union?

  1277. What about

  1278. communist China?

  1279. What about

  1280. Cambodia?

  1281. What about

  1282. Hitler?

  1283. He didn't

  1284. believe in

  1285. God.

  1286. Did that

  1287. bring

  1288. prosperity?

  1289. He said,

  1290. no,

  1291. no,

  1292. you have

  1293. to look

  1294. at

  1295. Sweden.

  1296. And I

  1297. said,

  1298. how come

  1299. it's fair

  1300. for you to

  1301. point out

  1302. to me a

  1303. Russian

  1304. Orthodox

  1305. priest with

  1306. a $25,000

  1307. watch while

  1308. he's blessing

  1309. tanks about

  1310. to invade

  1311. the Ukraine

  1312. as a

  1313. picture of

  1314. all people

  1315. who worship

  1316. Jesus.

  1317. And I

  1318. can't point

  1319. to Mother

  1320. Teresa or

  1321. a holy

  1322. person,

  1323. but when I

  1324. raise up

  1325. something against

  1326. your thought,

  1327. you're saying,

  1328. no,

  1329. no,

  1330. you're not

  1331. allowed to

  1332. look at

  1333. Hitler and

  1334. Stalin and

  1335. Mao,

  1336. you have

  1337. to look at

  1338. Sweden.

  1339. And his

  1340. eyes glazed

  1341. over,

  1342. he couldn't

  1343. understand it

  1344. because it's

  1345. so deeply

  1346. ingrained

  1347. in our

  1348. culture that

  1349. spirituality is

  1350. better than

  1351. religion.

  1352. Why?

  1353. Because in

  1354. spirituality there's

  1355. no judgment.

  1356. God's judgments

  1357. are out of

  1358. sight.

  1359. And that when

  1360. there is no

  1361. God,

  1362. there's peace

  1363. and prosperity.

  1364. But this

  1365. describes

  1366. something more

  1367. like what

  1368. happens in

  1369. the Soviet

  1370. Union.

  1371. And it's not

  1372. just secular

  1373. things.

  1374. This describes

  1375. in this text

  1376. what's happening

  1377. in Iraq.

  1378. because in

  1379. fact,

  1380. religion can

  1381. be organized

  1382. in such a

  1383. way to

  1384. actually keep

  1385. God at a

  1386. distance and

  1387. to deify

  1388. ourselves.

  1389. That's what

  1390. religion does

  1391. as well.

  1392. It's what

  1393. spirituality

  1394. can do.

  1395. In fact,

  1396. at the

  1397. heart of

  1398. that in

  1399. fact,

  1400. what often

  1401. appears as

  1402. religion and

  1403. what often

  1404. appears as

  1405. Christianity,

  1406. what often

  1407. appears as

  1408. spirituality,

  1409. what often

  1410. appears as

  1411. secular life,

  1412. is merely a

  1413. worship of

  1414. power.

  1415. A worship of

  1416. my power or

  1417. my tribe's

  1418. power.

  1419. power.

  1420. So it is

  1421. that a

  1422. church can

  1423. be organized

  1424. in such a

  1425. way so

  1426. that when a

  1427. husband is

  1428. abusing his

  1429. wife and

  1430. the wife

  1431. complains,

  1432. the wife is

  1433. rebuked for

  1434. not submitting

  1435. to her

  1436. husband.

  1437. That's a

  1438. worship of

  1439. power,

  1440. not listening

  1441. to the

  1442. Bible.

  1443. And so

  1444. it is that

  1445. what is it

  1446. at the heart

  1447. of listening

  1448. to Oprah

  1449. and what

  1450. is at the

  1451. heart of

  1452. Deepak

  1453. Chopra and

  1454. what is at

  1455. the heart

  1456. of Islam

  1457. and what

  1458. is at the

  1459. heart of

  1460. so much

  1461. things is a

  1462. worship of

  1463. power.

  1464. What is at

  1465. the heart

  1466. of the

  1467. secret is

  1468. power.

  1469. Dostoevsky

  1470. very famously

  1471. said, and I

  1472. believe it's

  1473. never been

  1474. refuted

  1475. properly, that

  1476. if God is

  1477. dead, all

  1478. things are

  1479. permissible.

  1480. But what

  1481. this psalm is

  1482. saying is

  1483. something similar

  1484. but different.

  1485. What this

  1486. psalm is saying,

  1487. and this is

  1488. my next

  1489. point, is

  1490. that if I

  1491. am God, all

  1492. things are

  1493. permissible and

  1494. the weak

  1495. cower.

  1496. If I am

  1497. God, all

  1498. things are

  1499. permissible and

  1500. the weak

  1501. cower.

  1502. Now you're

  1503. saying, George,

  1504. that's just not

  1505. true of me.

  1506. Well, first

  1507. of all, I

  1508. think it's

  1509. what the

  1510. Bible say,

  1511. not George,

  1512. but is it

  1513. not true?

  1514. See, the

  1515. fact of the

  1516. matter is

  1517. that there's

  1518. probably nobody

  1519. here in this

  1520. room that

  1521. has God-like

  1522. power.

  1523. We're

  1524. constrained by,

  1525. and we're not

  1526. all evil, by

  1527. the way, because

  1528. remember, we're a

  1529. divided type of

  1530. person and we do

  1531. want to do good

  1532. things and stuff

  1533. like that.

  1534. And we do

  1535. sometimes experience

  1536. God's absence

  1537. as anguish.

  1538. But the fact of

  1539. the matter is,

  1540. if we try to,

  1541. let me tell you,

  1542. if I try to

  1543. just boss my

  1544. wife around and

  1545. tell her exactly

  1546. what she would

  1547. do, do you

  1548. know how well

  1549. that would work

  1550. for me?

  1551. Months later,

  1552. when she speaks

  1553. to me again,

  1554. after having

  1555. very properly

  1556. refused to do

  1557. every single

  1558. thing I tried

  1559. to boss her

  1560. around to do,

  1561. she would help

  1562. me to examine

  1563. my conscience

  1564. in my life.

  1565. And so,

  1566. you know,

  1567. often we have

  1568. bosses that

  1569. push back,

  1570. we have kids

  1571. that push back,

  1572. we have people

  1573. who push back,

  1574. but what are

  1575. we like in

  1576. our thought

  1577. life?

  1578. How would

  1579. it be if

  1580. God was to

  1581. show up and

  1582. on that screen,

  1583. I'll use myself,

  1584. not you,

  1585. and God was

  1586. just merely to

  1587. say, I don't

  1588. know what it

  1589. is now,

  1590. it's coming up

  1591. to 11 o'clock,

  1592. 11 o'clock,

  1593. George,

  1594. from 11 o'clock

  1595. yesterday to

  1596. 11 o'clock

  1597. today,

  1598. I'm just going

  1599. to replay

  1600. everything that

  1601. went through

  1602. your mind.

  1603. I'm going to

  1604. put it up on

  1605. that screen so

  1606. everybody can hear,

  1607. see the images

  1608. you were thinking

  1609. of and hear what

  1610. was going through

  1611. your mind,

  1612. how you

  1613. analyze situations,

  1614. what you thought

  1615. about.

  1616. I'm just going

  1617. to do that,

  1618. George,

  1619. because you know

  1620. in your mind,

  1621. that's where you

  1622. sort of are like

  1623. God,

  1624. aren't you,

  1625. George?

  1626. And I'm just

  1627. going to replay

  1628. all of the things

  1629. that you wanted

  1630. to do and

  1631. didn't want to

  1632. do and your

  1633. reactions to

  1634. other people

  1635. and what you

  1636. said.

  1637. And George,

  1638. the congregation

  1639. won't just do

  1640. like in your own

  1641. mind where you

  1642. have that telling

  1643. thought,

  1644. but they still

  1645. have to be with

  1646. you because

  1647. you see,

  1648. if I actually,

  1649. if all of a

  1650. sudden for the

  1651. last 24 hours

  1652. I just was

  1653. every single

  1654. thing that went

  1655. through my mind

  1656. actually happened

  1657. in real world,

  1658. people would

  1659. cower.

  1660. And all I would

  1661. think all sorts

  1662. of things were

  1663. permissible for me

  1664. and many of

  1665. those things

  1666. that were

  1667. permissible for

  1668. me would

  1669. lead people

  1670. to cower.

  1671. And you as

  1672. you watch it

  1673. all on the

  1674. screen would

  1675. be horrified.

  1676. And I actually

  1677. think I had a

  1678. pretty good 24

  1679. hours.

  1680. I had pretty

  1681. worse ones than

  1682. that.

  1683. You see,

  1684. this psalm is

  1685. trying to bring

  1686. to us that

  1687. if I am

  1688. God,

  1689. all things

  1690. are permissible

  1691. and the

  1692. weak cower.

  1693. It's trying

  1694. to communicate

  1695. to me that

  1696. I often

  1697. consciously and

  1698. unconsciously

  1699. organize my

  1700. way in such

  1701. a way to

  1702. keep God

  1703. far away.

  1704. And that I

  1705. actually think

  1706. that I will

  1707. be happier

  1708. for much of

  1709. my day and

  1710. much of my

  1711. life if God

  1712. is absent.

  1713. And that's

  1714. who I am.

  1715. That's who

  1716. you are.

  1717. Now, some

  1718. of you might

  1719. be wondering,

  1720. okay, George,

  1721. I have my

  1722. time.

  1723. Does that

  1724. mean the

  1725. Bible is

  1726. saying that,

  1727. okay, we

  1728. all sin, so

  1729. therefore you

  1730. can't say

  1731. anything to the

  1732. abusive husband?

  1733. You can't say

  1734. anything to the

  1735. person who's

  1736. kidnapping, part

  1737. of a kidnapping

  1738. ring of

  1739. kidnapping people

  1740. in a poor

  1741. country and

  1742. bringing them

  1743. to a rich

  1744. country to be

  1745. sexual objects

  1746. for men or

  1747. women?

  1748. Are you

  1749. saying that

  1750. you can't

  1751. say anything

  1752. about what's

  1753. going on right

  1754. now in Iraq

  1755. and Syria?

  1756. Because I'm a

  1757. sinner, they're a

  1758. sinner, therefore

  1759. we're all

  1760. sinners, therefore

  1761. we can say

  1762. nothing.

  1763. Is that what

  1764. the psalm is

  1765. saying?

  1766. Not at all.

  1767. In fact, the

  1768. psalm is very,

  1769. very powerfully

  1770. working at two

  1771. levels at the

  1772. same time

  1773. without confusing

  1774. them.

  1775. Let's look how it

  1776. continues in

  1777. verse 12.

  1778. It's not saying

  1779. that we merely

  1780. say that because

  1781. all of us have

  1782. this issue in

  1783. our lives of

  1784. thinking like

  1785. we're God, that

  1786. we can't say

  1787. that there's not

  1788. real evil that's

  1789. going on that

  1790. has to be spoken

  1791. against.

  1792. Look at verse

  1793. 12 and

  1794. following.

  1795. Arise.

  1796. Remember, so

  1797. verse 11 says,

  1798. he says in his

  1799. heart, God has

  1800. forgotten, he has

  1801. hid in his face,

  1802. he will never

  1803. see it.

  1804. Verse 12,

  1805. Arise, O

  1806. Lord, O God, lift

  1807. up your hand, forget

  1808. not the afflicted.

  1809. Why does the

  1810. wicked renounce

  1811. God and say in

  1812. his heart, you

  1813. will not call to

  1814. account?

1815. But you do see, for

  1816. you note mischief

  1817. and vexation, that

  1818. you may take it

  1819. into your hands.

  1820. To you the

  1821. helpless commits

  1822. himself.

  1823. You have been the

  1824. helper of the

  1825. fatherless.

  1826. Break the arm of

  1827. the wicked and

  1828. evildoer.

  1829. Call his wickedness

  1830. to account.

  1831. Till you find

  1832. none.

  1833. The Lord is

  1834. king forever

  1835. and ever.

  1836. The nations

  1837. perish from

  1838. his land.

  1839. O Lord, you

  1840. hear the desire

  1841. of the afflicted.

  1842. You will

  1843. strengthen their

  1844. heart.

  1845. You will

  1846. incline your

  1847. ear to do

  1848. justice to the

  1849. fatherless and

  1850. the oppressed

  1851. so that man

  1852. who is of the

  1853. earth may strike

  1854. terror no more.

  1855. What's going on

  1856. here?

  1857. What's going on

  1858. here?

  1859. Here's what's

  1860. going on.

  1861. First, my next

  1862. point.

  1863. Who is the

  1864. living God?

  1865. He's revealed

  1866. here.

  1867. Who is the

  1868. living God?

  1869. Helper of the

  1870. helpless.

  1871. That's one way we

  1872. can pray to him.

1873. When we pray to the

  1874. living God, we can

  1875. say, helper of the

  1876. helpless.

  1877. That is your name.

  1878. And what is a

  1879. fundamental part of

  1880. becoming a godly

  1881. man or a godly

  1882. woman?

  1883. I use the

  1884. strength that comes

  1885. from God to help

  1886. the helpless.

  1887. Who is the

  1888. living God?

  1889. Helper of the

  1890. helpless.

  1891. What is a

  1892. fundamental part of

  1893. becoming a godly

  1894. man or woman?

  1895. I use the strength

  1896. that comes from

  1897. God to help the

  1898. helpless.

  1899. So what do we

  1900. say?

  1901. If there is a

  1902. man in here who

  1903. is abusing his

  1904. wife, abusing his

  1905. children, you are

  1906. doing wrong, you

  1907. should stop it.

  1908. If you are a

  1909. wife in such a

  1910. situation, you

  1911. should come and

  1912. speak to me or

  1913. should call the

  1914. office.

  1915. You need to deal

  1916. with that situation

  1917. and we will

  1918. support you.

  1919. What is going on

  1920. in Iraq?

  1921. That is completely

  1922. and utterly

  1923. abhorrent to the

  1924. living God that

  1925. you would kill

  1926. children who are

  1927. Christians because

  1928. they do not

  1929. convert to Islam.

  1930. That is a

  1931. horrible thing.

  1932. If you are a

  1933. slum landlord,

  1934. what you are

  1935. doing is pursuing

  1936. the poor to

  1937. their hurt and

  1938. hurting them and

  1939. you need to

  1940. stop, you need

  1941. to repent, it

  1942. is wrong.

  1943. That is what the

  1944. psalm is telling

  1945. us that we can

  1946. save, that we

  1947. should save.

  1948. That God gives

  1949. us strength, it is

  1950. his earth, even

  1951. the most mighty

  1952. emperor, if you

  1953. look at verse

  1954. 18, even the

  1955. most mighty

  1956. emperor is an

  1957. emperor in God's

  1958. earth.

  1959. He never

  1960. relinquishes

  1961. sovereignty.

  1962. We are always

  1963. but a vassal who

  1964. receives from God

  1965. and we receive

  1966. our strength not

  1967. to pursue the

  1968. poor or oppress

  1969. them, but to

  1970. help the helpless.

  1971. And here I am

  1972. going to be very

  1973. politically incorrect

  1974. and maybe offend

  1975. you.

  1976. Who on all the

  1977. earth is the most

  1978. helpless?

  1979. helpless, the

  1980. fetus, the

  1981. unborn in a

  1982. mother's womb.

  1983. No person is

  1984. more helpless

  1985. than a fetus.

  1986. And what are we

  1987. called to do who

  1988. are strength and

  1989. have power?

  1990. As in the

  1991. National Post

  1992. this week with an

  1993. article by I think

  1994. it was Dawkins about

  1995. how if the baby

  1996. within your womb

  1997. is going to have

  1998. Down syndrome, the

  1999. just and moral

2000. thing to do is to

  2001. kill that baby?

  2002. No.

  2003. God gives me

  2004. strength to help

  2005. the helpless.

  2006. And we have to

  2007. say something about

  2008. the unborn in the

  2009. womb.

  2010. And a culture

  2011. increasingly organized

  2012. in Canada to keep

  2013. God absent and as

  2014. God becomes more

  2015. absent the weak

  2016. cower.

  2017. God.

  2018. God is

  2019. going to have

  2020. to be

  2021. God.

  2022. God is

  2023. going to have

  2024. to be

  2025. God.

  2026. God is

  2027. going to have to

  2028. be

  2029. God.

  2030. And virtually every

  2031. politician in this

  2032. country is terrified

  2033. to speak about it

2034. and even make the most

  2035. minute limit.

  2036. Now I don't say this.

  2037. There's undoubtedly in

  2038. this room today some

  2039. people who have either

  2040. had abortions or have

  2041. helped people had

  2042. abortions or counsel

  2043. people to have

  2044. abortions and I

  2045. don't mean to pick

  2046. you out and to

  2047. demonize you.

  2048. I really don't.

  2049. I really don't.

2050. In fact, one of the

  2051. things you can pray

2052. for me every week is

  2053. that I don't take

  2054. this opportunity that

2055. I have to be up

  2056. front to try to

  2057. demonize anybody or

  2058. to further my own

  2059. power.

  2060. You see, the

  2061. Bible convicts us

  2062. of sin not to

  2063. shame us and drive

  2064. us to despair,

  2065. but to turn our

  2066. hearts to God,

  2067. to abandon

  2068. ourselves to God.

  2069. And the text does

  2070. this in a very,

  2071. very powerful and

  2072. interesting way.

  2073. Look at verse 13

  2074. and 14.

  2075. Why does the

  2076. wicked, maybe I

  2077. might have the

  2078. wrong, we'll start

  2079. reading until I get

  2080. to the right part.

  2081. Why does the

  2082. wicked renounce God

  2083. and say in his

  2084. heart you will not

  2085. call to account?

  2086. But you do see,

  2087. for you note mischief

  2088. and vexation that you

2089. may take it into your

  2090. hands.

  2091. To you the helpless

  2092. commits himself.

  2093. You have been the

  2094. helper of the

  2095. fatherless.

  2096. Here's the thing,

  2097. verse 15,

2098. break the arm of the

  2099. wicked and evildoer.

  2100. Call his wickedness

  2101. to account till you

  2102. find none.

  2103. You know, that's

  2104. actually, for those

  2105. of us who've suffered

  2106. under great injustice,

  2107. it's a very merciful

  2108. prayer.

  2109. You see, in this

  2110. culture where there's

  2111. three primary types of

  2112. weapons apart from

  2113. your fists, there's

  2114. the sword, there's

  2115. the bow and arrow,

  2116. and there's the

  2117. spear.

  2118. And if I am a

  2119. powerful person

  2120. oppressing another

  2121. person, and I pray

  2122. that that person's

  2123. arm be broken, I'm

  2124. not praying that they

  2125. go to hell, I'm

  2126. praying that they

  2127. become weak.

  2128. And this entire

  2129. psalm is couched in

  2130. mercy, that we

  2131. might heed God and

  2132. realize our

  2133. weakness.

  2134. And in fact, it

  2135. goes even deeper.

2136. You know, who is it

  2137. in the Bible who

  2138. most prominently

  2139. experienced the

  2140. forsake, the

  2141. anguish of God

  2142. being hidden and

  2143. far away?

  2144. It's Jesus upon

  2145. the cross.

  2146. My God, my God,

  2147. why hast thou

  2148. forsaken me?

2149. Who is it in all

  2150. of the Bible who

  2151. most completely and

  2152. utterly typified

  2153. committing themselves

  2154. to God, abandoning

  2155. themselves to God?

  2156. It's Jesus.

  2157. Into thy hands I

  2158. commit my spirit.

  2159. I commend my spirit.

  2160. It's Jesus.

  2161. Who is it?

  2162. And, and, well,

  2163. look at, look at

  2164. verse 15 again.

  2165. Call his wickedness

  2166. to account till you

  2167. find none.

  2168. The image there is

  2169. like if you watch

  2170. mystery movies or

  2171. read mystery novels

  2172. and you know there's

  2173. been a murder

  2174. committed and they

  2175. bring in the crime

  2176. scene investigators and

  2177. they look for the

  2178. DNA, they look for

  2179. dandruff, they look

  2180. for hair samples,

  2181. they look for

  2182. everything they

  2183. possibly can find to

  2184. get every trace of

  2185. that which was left

  2186. behind by the

  2187. evildoer.

  2188. And that's that

  2189. same idea that we

  2190. want God to pursue

  2191. every single trace

  2192. of evil.

  2193. And what we

  2194. understand on the

  2195. cross, well, here's

2196. how I put it in the

  2197. point, if you could

  2198. put it up, Andrew.

  2199. God calls my

  2200. wickedness to account

2201. till he can find no

  2202. more.

2203. And this is what in

  2204. love Jesus really

2205. bears for me on the

  2206. cross.

  2207. God calls my

  2208. wickedness to account

2209. till he can find no

  2210. more.

2211. And this is what in

  2212. love Jesus freely

2213. bears for me on the

  2214. cross.

  2215. And even in these

  2216. few verses, verses

  2217. 14 and 15, but you

2218. do see for you know

  2219. mischief and vexation

2220. that you may take it

  2221. into your hands.

  2222. To you the helpless

  2223. commits himself.

  2224. And actually the

  2225. original language, the

  2226. word there is

  2227. abandoned himself.

  2228. This psalm, on one

  2229. hand, it never reduces

2230. our call to speak out

  2231. against evil.

  2232. It never diminishes

  2233. that.

2234. And it never, not only

  2235. diminishes us not only

  2236. speaking out, but doing

2237. what we can to help the

  2238. helpless.

  2239. As Jeremiah said

  2240. earlier, to love, mercy,

  2241. and compassion.

2242. But at the same time, it

  2243. speaks directly to me

2244. at my heart level, at

2245. the very center of whom

2246. I am, to recognize my

  2247. helplessness.

  2248. That I can't, by a mere

2249. act of my will, stop

  2250. myself from ever trying.

  2251. Like, I still will

  2252. continue to organize my

  2253. life at different times

2254. as if God does not

  2255. exist.

2256. And there will be times

  2257. I don't want God to

  2258. show up.

  2259. And I'm helpless to

  2260. stop that.

2261. And the psalm is trying

2262. to help me to understand

  2263. that I am helpless.

  2264. And it's saying that I

2265. am called, I am invited

  2266. by the living God.

  2267. God himself, the living

  2268. God, invites me to

2269. respond to this, not by

  2270. more religion, not by

  2271. more Bible memorizing, not

2272. by going to church more,

2273. not by doing all of these

2274. things, but for me to

  2275. abandon myself to God.

2276. And the cross is an act

  2277. not only of unsurpassed

  2278. mercy, but of unsurpassed

  2279. justice.

  2280. Here's the shocking thing

  2281. about the cross.

2282. When you put your faith

  2283. and trust, when you

  2284. abandon yourself to what

2285. God does for you in the

2286. person of Jesus upon the

2287. cross, that God has in

  2288. fact looked into the

2289. wicked of my life from

  2290. the moment of my

  2291. conception to the moment

2292. of my death, and he's

2293. looked at it until he's

  2294. found every single trace

  2295. of it.

  2296. And that's what Jesus

2297. bears upon himself in the

  2298. cross.

2299. It means that when I

  2300. accept him, when you

  2301. accept him as your

  2302. savior and as your

2303. Lord, you are no more

  2304. forgiven as you enter

  2305. heaven than you are

  2306. right now.

2307. Which is why as we're

  2308. gripped by the gospel,

2309. as we're gripped by the

  2310. gospel, as disciples of

  2311. Christ, it creates within

2312. us the desire to live for

  2313. his glory.

2314. And use our strength to

2315. help the helpless, as we're

2316. gripped by the gospel, by

2317. how God deals with our

  2318. helplessness and our

2319. rebellion as it grips us.

  2320. A normal Holy Spirit-induced

2321. desire will be to help the

  2322. helpless.

  2323. God bless you.

  2324. Please stand.

  2325. Please stand.

2326. Let's bow our heads in

  2327. prayer.

2328. Father, you are so kind to us

2329. and so gentle with us.

2330. We ask, Father, that your

2331. word would enter deeply into

2332. our lives and that your word

2333. would form us and that we not

2334. be those types of different

2335. types of soil, Father, that

2336. just ignore your word or allow

2337. it just to come in for a

2338. moment or get choked by weeds.

2339. But, Father, that your word

2340. would come into our lives and

2341. that your word would bear much

  2342. fruit.

2343. Father, turn our eyes to Jesus.

2344. Grip us with the gospel that we

2345. might know that we are to

2346. abandon ourselves to you alone,

2347. who are the helper of the

2348. helpless, to you alone, who can

2349. deal with all traces of wickedness

2350. in our lives, that you alone can

2351. deal with that which keeps us

2352. separate from you, that you

2353. alone deal with this in the

2354. weakness of your son's death

2355. upon the cross to redeem us.

2356. Father, grip us by the gospel.

2357. Make us disciples who live for

  2358. your glory.

2359. And, Father, as we are gripped by

2360. the gospel, may it do its proper

2361. work in our lives, strengthening us

2362. in our hearts to help the

  2363. helpless.

2364. And this we ask in Jesus' name.

  2365. Amen.
