  1. Good morning, Watermark.

  2. My name is Alfie, and I help out with the university ministry here.

  3. And this message today is going to be coming as the 11th part, I think,

  4. of a series that we're doing called God's Story, Our Story.

  5. And what we're trying to figure out is, what is God's story?

  6. Because the Bible calls us to live in and be a part of God's story,

  7. but a lot of the time we find ourselves being either drifting into

  8. or being attracted by other stories around us.

  9. If you're like me, your story the past couple of weeks has revolved around ice cream.

  10. You wake up in the morning, you think, after breakfast I will have ice cream.

  11. When you're at work, all you can think about is ice cream.

  12. And at the end of the day, you take all your friends to your favorite ice cream shop,

  13. and you hope that they will like you because you're taking them to ice cream,

  14. and the ice cream shop owner will like you because you're bringing all these customers,

  15. and everything will be great, and everyone will love Alfie.

  16. And I lied. The story isn't about ice cream. It's actually about me.

  17. I want everyone to like me and to love me.

  18. But there are many other stories.

  19. There's a story of your typical expat.

  20. You've come to Hong Kong, and Hong Kong isn't your home.

  21. You don't really want it to be your home.

  22. But while you're here, you think you're going to make the best of it.

  23. You're going to seek out all the entertainment and the pleasure that you can get.

  24. And so your schedule is run by which happy hour is happening at which bar,

  25. and when ladies' night is, and you're going to go and forget the world you've come from,

  26. enjoy some drinks, maybe some drugs, and, you know, maybe some casual encounters.

  27. And you know what? It doesn't matter because none of this is going to follow you back home.

  28. Because when you go home, you're going to be rewarded

  29. because you went overseas, and you worked in a tough economic climate.

  30. And, you know, you're going to get a promotion,

  31. or if you're a student, you get special recognition on your degree,

  32. and it's all great.

  33. Or you can be living in the Disney story.

  34. The Disney story that Eric talked about right at the beginning,

  35. that, you know, if you just follow your heart, everything will be okay.

  36. Or, you know, maybe it's the Hong Kong story

  37. where the objective in life is to become as rich and as wealthy as possible.

  38. And when you have children, from the moment you're two years old,

  39. you do everything for them so they can become just as rich,

  40. if not richer, than you have been.

  41. Now, the object of this series isn't to kind of shame you out of these stories,

  42. but we want to show you that God's story is beautiful.

  43. God's story is good.

  44. And we want you to live as a part of this gospel,

  45. to live in God's story.

  46. So what have we talked about so far?

  47. In the beginning, we had creation.

  48. And we see God putting together the heavens and the earth,

  49. and he creates man specifically to be in his image

  50. and to be his representatives,

  51. that these people are going to be there,

  52. and they're going to rule over the earth in God's place.

  53. But then the first man and woman, Adam and Eve,

  54. they do something that we all do.

  55. They reject God's rule over their lives.

  56. And they say that, actually, we're going to do things our way.

  57. And the result of that is a curse,

  58. a curse that brings pain and childbearing,

  59. a curse that means that work becomes unfruitful.

  60. But God doesn't leave us to wallow in our misery and our suffering.

  61. He calls a man called Abraham,

  62. and he tells Abraham,

  63. I'm going to take you to this special place,

  64. and I'm going to give you descendants,

  65. I'm going to give you children,

  66. and they're going to have a land, a country to call their own.

  67. But most importantly, I'm going to give them a blessing.

  68. And this blessing is going to be for you, for your family.

  69. It's going to be for their descendants.

  70. It's going to be for this nation.

  71. This is a blessing that is going to be for the whole world.

  72. Abraham believes God,

  73. and God says that this makes him righteous.

  74. Through Exodus, we saw God rescuing his people,

  75. taking his nation out of slavery in Egypt,

  76. and he puts them into the promised land,

  77. and he gives them a law,

  78. and he says, this law is good.

  79. It shows you about me.

  80. It shows you about what I want you to do,

  81. but it also shows you that you need a savior.

  82. It shows you that you need someone to come and rescue you.

  83. We see God then putting his nation into Israel

  84. and giving them kings.

  85. We see great kings like David.

  86. We see kings like Solomon who went and built God's temple,

  87. and it all looks well for Israel,

  88. but it falls apart.

  89. The kingdom is split in two,

  90. and they each have their bad kings

  91. and their worst kings,

  92. and God sends prophet after prophet

  93. to call his people back to them

  94. to say, stop chasing after the ways of the world.

  95. Come back to me.

  96. Last week, we saw how Hosea was a picture of God

  97. coming back to rescue his people.

  98. We saw Hosea going to the slave market

  99. to rescue his adulterous wife,

  100. and in that, we see this amazing love

  101. that God has for us.

  102. Today, we're going to be looking at Jesus,

  103. and it's not the pictures and the images

  104. and the illustrations of Jesus

  105. that we've had the past couple of weeks,

  106. but we're going to look at who Jesus is.

  107. As much as I would like to look

  108. at the entirety of Jesus' life,

  109. I'm sure you guys don't want to be here for five hours.

  110. So we're going to look at one part,

  111. and in this one part,

  112. I'm going to try and answer three questions.

  113. Let me know how I do on that.

  114. The first one is, who is Jesus?

  115. Second, what does he do?

  116. And lastly, why is it important?

  117. What does it mean for us?

  118. Who Jesus is matters,

  119. because the way we view someone

  120. shapes the way that we respond to them.

  121. When I was about seven or eight years old,

  122. my family, money was a little bit tight,

  123. so we didn't go away for the summer holidays.

  124. We got on a bus towards Tun Mun,

  125. and we got off the Gold Coast,

  126. and we stayed at the hotel there for a week.

  127. It was great because we had the beach and the sun,

  128. and there was like a games room,

  129. and my dad could take the bus to work and come back,

  130. and as a family, we spent about a week there.

  131. Now, on one of these days,

  132. I was out at the back of the hotel with my mother,

  133. and we were playing chess.

  134. They had this giant chess set,

  135. about 10 meters by 10 meters.

  136. It was huge.

  137. I loved it.

  138. But at some point in this game,

  139. I realized something was going wrong.

  140. I was losing.

  141. And I was convinced that my mom was cheating.

  142. And I got very angry.

  143. I was really frustrated.

  144. I said, Mom, that's not how you move the night.

  145. That's not how it works.

  146. And I got really frustrated.

  147. I didn't know what to do

  148. because Mom kept insisting she was right.

  149. And I reached up,

  150. and I slapped my mother.

  151. Now, in that moment,

  152. when I looked at my mother,

  153. I didn't see the mother who carried me for nine months

  154. and cared for me all these years.

  155. I saw a traitor

  156. who was cheating me out of my victory in this chess game.

  157. And so I went away,

  158. and my dad came home from work that evening,

  159. and he pulled me aside,

  160. and he looked at me.

  161. Now, when I used to get in trouble as a kid,

  162. my dad would always say,

  163. you know, you have to love your mother.

  164. Your mother is very nice.

  165. She cares for you.

  166. She cooks for you.

  167. But he didn't say that today.

  168. He said, my wife.

  169. You did what to my wife?

  170. I knew I was in trouble.

  171. I was more trouble than I've ever been in my life.

  172. But I knew in that moment

  173. that the way I looked at my mother changed drastically.

  174. You know, when I think that my mother is cheating me

  175. out of a victory in chess,

  176. I remember that it's not just my mother,

  177. but it's my dad's wife,

  178. and that changes the way that I respond and react and treat my mother.

  179. But it's the same thing with Jesus.

  180. I think sometimes we like to put different names on Jesus.

  181. We tell him,

  182. we say that, you know,

  183. he's a good teacher,

  184. that he's a social justice pioneer,

  185. that he is,

  186. somebody once said a couple of weeks ago,

  187. I heard,

  188. that he was an alien who came.

  189. Right?

  190. And all these different things,

  191. they change the way that we look at who Jesus is

  192. and what he does.

  193. But who Jesus is is important

  194. because that changes the way that we look at

  195. the story of the Bible.

  196. It changes the way that we look at

  197. what the people 2,000 years ago thought of

  198. when they saw Jesus.

  199. And it changes what our life means

  200. as Jesus' people,

  201. as Jesus' followers.

  202. So how do we figure out who Jesus is?

  203. Well, we look at his life.

  204. Now, it's not been too long since Christmas.

  205. I'm sure you remember the Christmas story.

  206. Virgin Mary, Holy Spirit comes,

  207. conceives a son inside her.

  208. The angels come and they sing,

  209. Hallelujah, there's a son.

  210. The shepherds go and visit him.

  211. The wise men go.

  212. And, you know, all these different things,

  213. they show different things about who Jesus was,

  214. who he was going to be.

  215. But what I want to look at today

  216. is the beginning of Jesus' ministry.

  217. The passage we read was about his baptism

  218. and about his temptation in the desert.

  219. So picture this.

  220. Jesus is about 30 years old.

  221. And he's done all the things

  222. that good Jewish boys do.

  223. So he probably would have had a bar mitzvah

  224. or something,

  225. you know, celebrate becoming a man.

  226. There's that episode where

  227. he was in the temple about 12 years old

  228. and he, you know, abandoned his parents,

  229. let them go off home without him,

  230. and he was debating with the temple scholars.

  231. At some point, maybe,

  232. his mother would have asked him,

  233. Jesus, you know,

  234. why aren't you interested

  235. in any of these nice girls?

  236. You know, and he probably

  237. would have been very faithful

  238. in going to the synagogue

  239. and, you know,

  240. being part of that Jewish culture

  241. and doing the things

  242. that good Jewish people do.

  243. And he was probably a carpenter

  244. like his earthly father, Joseph.

  245. But one day, about 30 years old,

  246. he goes down to the Jordan River

  247. and he sees his cousin there,

  248. John the Baptist.

  249. And John the Baptist is there

  250. wearing clothes made from camel's hair.

  251. And he's preaching

  252. and he's telling people

  253. that they need to repent

  254. because the king is coming.

  255. And people are listening

  256. and they're convicted

  257. and John the Baptist is there

  258. and he's baptizing them

  259. and he sees Jesus coming.

  260. He sees Jesus coming

  261. and he realized something

  262. that perhaps he hadn't thought about before

  263. and he looks at Jesus

  264. and he says,

  265. Behold, look,

  266. there is a Lamb of God,

  267. the one who takes away

  268. the world's sin.

  269. And Jesus comes up to him.

  270. Presumably, they knew each other,

  271. I think, they're cousins.

  272. And Jesus says,

  273. John, I need you to baptize me.

  274. And John says, no.

  275. You should be the one baptizing me

  276. because you're the one

  277. that God's talked about.

  278. You're the one that God has said

  279. was to come.

  280. You're the one that God said

  281. would baptize people

  282. with the Holy Spirit.

  283. You should baptize me.

  284. Jesus looks back to him and says,

  285. No, you need to baptize me

  286. because I need to be obedient.

  287. I need to fulfill the righteousness

  288. that God has set aside,

  289. has set before me.

  290. So Jesus is baptized.

  291. And in that moment,

  292. the Holy Spirit descends

  293. in the form of a dove from heaven.

  294. The heavens open up.

  295. And everyone here gets to hear

  296. from God

  297. in a very direct

  298. and very audible way.

  299. It's something that hasn't happened

  300. since God gave the law

  301. all the way back in Exodus.

  302. And this voice from heaven,

  303. God says,

  304. This is my son

  305. in whom I am well pleased.

  306. Now, if you're reading the Bible

  307. and you think that it's a metaphor,

  308. then you say,

  309. This is God's son,

  310. then, you know,

  311. this may not mean a lot to you.

  312. But for me,

  313. when I look at the Bible,

  314. I think,

  315. This is God telling me something.

  316. This is God telling me

  317. something important

  318. about who Jesus is.

  319. I think that God

  320. saying that Jesus is his son

  321. is very, very important.

  322. So, this son of God,

  323. this Jesus,

  324. what does he do?

  325. Surely,

  326. if he's going to start his ministry,

  327. he would do something amazing.

  328. Start it out with a bang.

  329. Maybe he'd do a miracle.

  330. You know,

  331. there must have been sick people there.

  332. He could have healed them.

  333. He could have walked in the water.

  334. The river is quite convenient.

  335. You know,

  336. he could have fed everyone there.

  337. Or maybe he would have given a sermon.

  338. He'd have said,

  339. You know,

  340. this is what baptism means,

  341. you know,

  342. just to clear up all the confusion.

  343. You know,

  344. he could have given a sermon

  345. about, you know,

  346. what repentance is.

  347. He could have told them,

  348. you know,

  349. this is what I'll be doing

  350. over the next couple of years.

  351. I'll be in these cities

  352. on these days,

  353. and I'm going to a cross.

  354. And he could have explained

  355. everything to the people there,

  356. or maybe he could have

  357. chosen his disciples.

  358. He could have brought

  359. his disciples together there,

  360. and he said,

  361. All right,

  362. now we're going to go

  363. on a special

  364. disciples training camp.

  365. We're going to go away

  366. for a couple of weeks,

  367. and you're going to come back,

  368. and you're going to go

  369. and spread the gospel.

  370. Instead,

  371. he goes into the wilderness,

  372. and I don't know,

  373. when I looked at it

  374. the first time,

  375. it made me a little bit strange.

  376. It was a bit awkward,

  377. because it says here,

  378. Then Jesus was led up

  379. by the Spirit

  380. into the wilderness.

  381. So the Holy Spirit of God

  382. is taking Jesus

  383. into the wilderness,

  384. but he's taking him

  385. to be tempted by Satan.

  386. That didn't make sense to me.

  387. That doesn't make sense to me.

  388. Why would God take his son,

  389. you know,

  390. who he loves,

  391. who he's well pleased with,

  392. and put him somewhere

  393. where it's not very nice to be.

  394. It's a wilderness.

  395. It's a desert,

  396. and put him there

  397. to be tempted by Satan.

  398. So he goes there,

  399. and he's there for 40 days

  400. and 40 nights

  401. in the wilderness,

  402. under the sun,

  403. in the cold at night,

  404. and Satan comes.

  405. He comes to tempt him,

  406. and he says,

  407. You know, Jesus,

  408. you're hungry,

  409. but you're also

  410. the son of God.

  411. You know,

  412. if you're the son of the king,

  413. why do you have to starve?

  414. Why do you have to,

  415. you know,

  416. to sit around here

  417. preparing for your ministry

  418. in hunger?

  419. Why don't you turn

  420. these stones into bread?

  421. You can do it.

  422. After all,

  423. you are God's son,

  424. aren't you?

  425. And Jesus says,

  426. No.

  427. He quotes scripture

  428. back to Satan

  429. and says,

  430. The Bible says that

  431. I don't live by bread,

  432. but I live by the words

  433. from God's mouth.

  434. You know,

  435. the second temptation

  436. comes along,

  437. and Satan tries another tactic.

  438. He realizes that Jesus

  439. is using the Bible,

  440. so he's going to use

  441. the Bible as well.

  442. Taking him to the top

  443. of the temple,

  444. he says,

  445. If you jump off,

  446. people will see you.

  447. You'll become famous.

  448. That's a good thing, right?

  449. But you'll be totally safe,

  450. because I remember

  451. the psalm that says

  452. that God's going to catch you.

  453. He's going to send

  454. his angels to protect you,

  455. and your feet won't hit a stone.

  456. Jesus returns and says,

  457. That's not how you look

  458. at the Bible.

  459. That's not how you use

  460. God's word.

  461. He says,

  462. Do not put the Lord

  463. your God to the test.

  464. Satan tries again.

  465. He takes Jesus

  466. to the top of a mountain,

  467. and he shows him

  468. all the kingdoms of the earth,

  469. and he says,

  470. These kingdoms are mine.

  471. I get to choose

  472. who rules them.

  473. If you'll bow down to me,

  474. I will make you

  475. the ruler of these things.

  476. And Jesus says,

  477. Be gone, Satan.

  478. I like that word.

  479. Be gone.

  480. Get away from here,

  481. because I am here

  482. to honor my Father,

  483. to love my Father,

  484. and it's only my Father

  485. that I am going

  486. to be worshiping.

  487. And so,

  488. it's a very simple story.

  489. Jesus is good.

  490. Satan is bad.

  491. Satan tempts Jesus.

  492. Jesus knows the Bible,

  493. so he resists temptation.

  494. Yay, Jesus.

  495. So now,

  496. everyone needs to go away

  497. from here,

  498. learn your Bibles,

  499. so that you can be

  500. just like Jesus

  501. and resist temptation.

  502. Except,

  503. it's not really

  504. just about that.

  505. It's more than just

  506. a call for us

  507. to know God's word.

  508. It's more than just

  509. a call for us

  510. to know what God says

  511. and know what's right

  512. and what's wrong.

  513. Jesus' actions

  514. in the wilderness here

  515. have an effect

  516. that ripples out

  517. and it affects the way

  518. that we live our lives.

  519. And it goes back

  520. and it shows the things

  521. about who God is

  522. and the promises

  523. that he made

  524. to his people.

  525. I love the Bible

  526. because it rarely

  527. does anything once.

  528. You know,

  529. God always uses

  530. pictures of small things

  531. to show people

  532. a bigger thing.

  533. You know,

  534. he creates man

  535. in his image

  536. and when we see

  537. other people's creativity,

  538. we can glorify God

  539. who is creative.

  540. You know,

  541. when we see the picture

  542. of marriage,

  543. we can look at that

  544. and we say,

  545. this is a beautiful relationship

  546. that God has brought

  547. two people together

  548. and we can also say

  549. that we're looking forward

  550. to the marriage

  551. of Christ and the church

  552. in eternity.

  553. I like that the Bible

  554. lets us use small things

  555. to get a grasp

  556. of big heavenly things.

  557. For Jesus,

  558. this temptation

  559. was important

  560. because, you know,

  561. this wasn't the first time

  562. that the Son of Man

  563. was tempted by Satan.

  564. This wasn't the first time

  565. that God's chosen one

  566. was wandering

  567. in the wilderness.

  568. I want to show you

  569. and hopefully I can do it,

  570. I want to show you

  571. that Jesus isn't this add-on

  572. to a law that didn't quite work

  573. and prophets

  574. who weren't really listened to.

  575. Hopefully by the end of this,

  576. you know,

  577. you will see that Jesus

  578. is the fulfillment

  579. of everything that we've seen.

  580. That, you know,

  581. when we started in January

  582. looking at creation

  583. and the story of Abraham

  584. and of Exodus

  585. and of David

  586. and of Solomon,

  587. that all these stories

  588. are building up to Jesus.

  589. That it's not plan B.

  590. That Jesus was the plan

  591. from the beginning.

  592. So let's look again

  593. at the scene in the wilderness.

  594. In Deuteronomy 8,

  595. God talks to his people.

  596. He talks to his people

  597. after he's brought them

  598. through the wilderness

  599. and he tells them

  600. several things.

  601. He says that,

  602. you know,

  603. those years in the wilderness,

  604. you were there for 40 years

  605. and I took you there

  606. to test you.

  607. I took you there

  608. to know your hearts,

  609. to know that

  610. if you would follow

  611. my commandments,

  612. you know,

  613. I let you hunger

  614. to see how you would respond

  615. but all this time

  616. I protected you.

  617. I kept you.

  618. I made sure

  619. that your clothes

  620. didn't wear out,

  621. that your shoes

  622. didn't wear out,

  623. that your feet

  624. didn't swell

  625. in all your wandering.

  626. You know,

  627. Jesus and Israel

  628. are very, very similar

  629. because Israel

  630. was led into the wilderness

  631. by God.

  632. The pillar of smoke

  633. and fire

  634. went before them

  635. and they followed,

  636. Israel followed God

  637. in this pillar of smoke

  638. into the wilderness,

  639. into the desert

  640. and Jesus follows

  641. the Holy Spirit

  642. into the desert too.

  643. But it's not

  644. to torture them.

  645. God isn't thinking,

  646. ha ha,

  647. here are my chosen ones,

  648. I'm going to give them

  649. a terrible time.

  650. But it comes out

  651. of the context

  652. of this pre-existing

  653. relationship

  654. because in removing

  655. Israel from Egypt,

  656. God says,

  657. this is my people,

  658. they're mine

  659. and I love them

  660. and I want to give them

  661. freedom,

  662. I want to show them

  663. how to live

  664. and he does the same thing

  665. with Jesus.

  666. He says when he opens

  667. the heavens

  668. that this is my son.

  669. God is taking

  670. his children

  671. out of one place

  672. into the wilderness

  673. because it says

  674. that he wants

  675. to know their hearts.

  676. But I don't think

  677. God has any trouble

  678. knowing our hearts.

  679. I think what might

  680. have been going on

  681. is that God wanted

  682. to show Israel

  683. their own hearts

  684. and by testing Jesus

  685. to show us

  686. Jesus' heart

  687. that we would see

  688. the things

  689. that he did

  690. that we failed to do.

  691. See the ways

  692. that he was obedient

  693. that we would not do.

  694. In the wilderness,

  695. Israel was hungry

  696. and they grumbled

  697. and they said,

  698. you know what,

  699. this whole redemption

  700. thing is useless.

  701. Let's go back to Israel

  702. to Egypt, sorry.

  703. Let's go back to Egypt

  704. and we can become

  705. slaves there again

  706. because there

  707. we still have food.

  708. We still can eat.

  709. We're not hungry.

  710. The first thing they do

  711. when they're hungry

  712. wasn't to turn to God.

  713. It was to turn back

  714. to the slavery

  715. that God had brought them from.

  716. I always wondered,

  717. when they were grumbling,

  718. didn't they see

  719. the pillar of smoke?

  720. Didn't they remember

  721. the Red Sea

  722. pulling apart?

  723. Why did they grumble

  724. like this?

  725. But Jesus does

  726. what Israel could not do

  727. in their testing.

  728. You know,

  729. when Jesus is told

  730. to turn bread,

  731. stones into bread,

  732. he says,

  733. no,

  734. I think that my God

  735. is enough,

  736. that my Father

  737. is enough.

  738. I can trust his word

  739. because his word

  740. isn't just the law,

  741. but his word is love.

  742. His word creates.

  743. His word is the promise

  744. of a Savior,

  745. of a Redeemer.

  746. You know,

  747. where Israel believes

  748. that God's word

  749. and being God's people

  750. means that they're

  751. going to be comfortable

  752. and satisfied

  753. and life is going to be

  754. easy all the time,

  755. Jesus looks and says

  756. that maybe

  757. that isn't so true,

  758. that there will be

  759. discomfort,

  760. but I know

  761. that my safety

  762. is resting

  763. in being under God's word

  764. and being connected

  765. to him.

  766. You know,

  767. in a moment,

  768. Jesus is taken up

  769. to the temple

  770. and, you know,

  771. he points back

  772. to Israel

  773. and he says,

  774. don't put the Lord God

  775. to your test.

  776. He says,

  777. God's faithfulness

  778. is there.

  779. Yes,

  780. God is faithful,

  781. but God isn't faithful

  782. for us to test him.

  783. God is faithful

  784. for us to rely on him.

  785. You know,

  786. God isn't faithful

  787. so that we can

  788. jump off temples

  789. and do amazing things

  790. and get the fame

  791. of the world.

  792. God's faithfulness

  793. is that he's there

  794. with us

  795. when things are going great

  796. and when things

  797. are going badly.

  798. You know,

  799. the last temptation

  800. that Jesus faces

  801. is the temptation

  802. of the world.

  803. He is given

  804. the option

  805. to bow before Satan

  806. and be the king

  807. of all the kingdoms

  808. at a very small cost.

  809. All he had to do

  810. was worship Satan.

  811. You know,

  812. all he had to do

  813. was give his allegiance

  814. to God.

  815. Now,

  816. this seems like

  817. an easy test.

  818. Do you worship God

  819. or do you worship Satan?

  820. Right?

  821. Yeah,

  822. easy answer.

  823. God.

  824. Right?

  825. But,

  826. I think that

  827. while we recognize

  828. this here,

  829. we do this a lot

  830. of the time.

  831. I think I do.

  832. You know,

  833. I think I give up

  834. worshiping God

  835. for far lesser treasures

  836. than the whole world.

  837. You know,

  838. I think that,

  839. you know,

  840. Israel gave up God.

  841. They worshipped

  842. a golden calf,

  843. something they made

  844. with their own hands

  845. because they wanted

  846. something to celebrate.

  847. They wanted a feast.

  848. And we do the same,

  849. I think.

  850. I think we worship,

  851. we serve our greed,

  852. we worship our money

  853. because we think

  854. that will satisfy us.

  855. I know that,

  856. you know,

  857. very often I will give up God

  858. and I'll worship myself

  859. because I want more control.

  860. I want more control

  861. over my own life,

  862. over my circumstances.

  863. I want control

  864. over the people

  865. who are around me.

  866. You know,

  867. I think that the times

  868. that we are dissatisfied,

  869. when we're discontent,

  870. when we look and we say,

  871. I want that little bit more,

  872. we're giving up

  873. worshiping God

  874. to worship something else.

  875. in the desert

  876. for 40 days

  877. is testing,

  878. the hunger,

  879. you know,

  880. all these things,

  881. they draw a parallel

  882. between Jesus

  883. and the wilderness

  884. and Israel

  885. with their 40 years.

  886. You know,

  887. the desert

  888. was the beginning

  889. of God establishing

  890. his nation of Israel

  891. and in this wilderness,

  892. God begins

  893. the process

  894. of building

  895. his kingdom

  896. in Christ.

  897. He frees Israel

  898. from this bondage

  899. of slavery

  900. to the Egyptians

  901. and in Christ

  902. he makes a way

  903. for our freedom

  904. from deadness and sin.

  905. Jesus' 40 days

  906. in the desert

  907. were Israel's 40 years

  908. but where Israel fails,

  909. Jesus triumphs.

  910. You know,

  911. where Israel

  912. kind of goes

  913. and makes a really feeble

  914. and half-hearted

  915. attempt at taking

  916. the promised land,

  917. Jesus is victorious.

  918. You know,

  919. Satan leaves him

  920. because Satan realizes

  921. that he's lost.

  922. You know,

  923. Satan went into

  924. this temptation

  925. hoping that

  926. if I can make

  927. the Son of God

  928. sin,

  929. then I've won.

  930. I will have control

  931. over the earth

  932. and God will destroy

  933. in his judgment

  934. and I'll have won.

  935. What is significant

  936. about this temptation

  937. is that it isn't new.

  938. Jesus is tempted

  939. in all the ways

  940. that we are.

  941. You know,

  942. to rebelliously

  943. test God,

  944. to look at God's

  945. riches and provision

  946. and to turn

  947. to something else

  948. to provide for us.

  949. To worship God's creation

  950. instead of God.

  951. To worship God's creation

  952. instead of the God

  953. who created it.

  954. Jesus obeys

  955. and in doing that

  956. he identifies

  957. with Israel

  958. and with us.

  959. He battles Satan

  960. and he wins.

  961. He trusts in God

  962. and not bread

  963. or angels

  964. or power.

  965. By his obedience,

  966. Jesus purchased

  967. obedience for us.

  968. His perfection

  969. makes his children

  970. perfect.

  971. His strength

  972. makes us strong.

  973. You know,

  974. I'm thinking,

  975. what does this look like

  976. for Israel?

  977. What does it look like

  978. for these early Christians?

  979. Christians.

  980. You know,

  981. I'm imagining

  982. Pharisees going around

  983. telling people,

  984. you're doing that wrong,

  985. you're doing this wrong,

  986. you walked one mile

  987. too many,

  988. that's Sabbath breaking,

  989. you tied the wrong knot.

  990. You know,

  991. I think

  992. Christ's righteousness

  993. bought for his people

  994. meant

  995. that this Jewish Christian

  996. could celebrate

  997. the Sabbath

  998. freely,

  999. not having to worry

  1000. if he was tying

  1001. the wrong knot

  1002. or walking too far

  1003. because he knows

  1004. that there's no

  1005. condemnation for him

  1006. because

  1007. Christ's righteousness

  1008. is his.

  1009. I think

  1010. when I look

  1011. at Christ

  1012. in the desert

  1013. and I see

  1014. his obedience,

  1015. I see that I get

  1016. to live

  1017. my life

  1018. without fear,

  1019. without worrying

  1020. about doing it wrong.

  1021. You know,

  1022. I think I'm a little bit

  1023. like a Pharisee.

1024. My life is built up

  1025. around rules.

1026. I have lots and lots

  1027. of rules

  1028. because rules

  1029. keep me safe.

  1030. They keep me

  1031. out of trouble,

  1032. they keep me

  1033. from doing stupid things

  1034. but the rules

  1035. don't keep me

  1036. from sinning

  1037. all the time.

  1038. I know

1039. that when I mess up

  1040. and, you know,

1041. the story about my mother

  1042. is funny but,

  1043. you know,

  1044. just this past Thursday

  1045. at dinner,

  1046. I got really frustrated

  1047. with my mother again

1048. and I was very rude to her.

  1049. I didn't slap her though

  1050. but, you know,

1051. I can go to my mother

  1052. and ask for forgiveness

  1053. for being really upset

1054. but I can go to God

  1055. and I can say,

  1056. thank you God

  1057. for Christ's obedience.

1058. because that is my obedience

  1059. because when I'm rude

  1060. to my mother,

  1061. I am still perfect

  1062. in Christ.

  1063. You know,

  1064. and when I work

  1065. at killing sin,

1066. when I work at killing lust

  1067. and pride

  1068. and laziness,

  1069. you know,

  1070. I'm not manufacturing

  1071. my own righteousness,

  1072. I'm putting on Christ,

1073. I'm putting on the obedience

1074. that he displayed to us

  1075. in the wilderness.

  1076. You know,

  1077. I know that Christ's obedience

  1078. is mine

  1079. where my body

  1080. is weak

1081. and succumbs to sin often.

1082. I know that my soul

  1083. is alive

  1084. because it's joined up

  1085. with Jesus Christ.

  1086. Now,

  1087. I don't know about you,

1088. you could be really worn out,

  1089. feeling powerless.

  1090. I don't know,

  1091. maybe you're at work

  1092. and there's a lot of pressure

  1093. to conform.

  1094. You know,

  1095. maybe,

  1096. maybe you just

  1097. fudge the numbers

  1098. a little bit

  1099. because everyone else

  1100. is doing it.

  1101. And you know what?

1102. If you have good numbers,

  1103. then maybe you'll get

  1104. a promotion.

  1105. You get a promotion,

  1106. you can provide

  1107. for your family

  1108. and that's a good thing,

  1109. right?

1110. Or maybe you don't care.

  1111. You know,

  1112. maybe you're just

  1113. going to go through

  1114. all your exams

1115. and you're going to cheat

  1116. in all your exams

  1117. and all your tests

  1118. and all your coursework.

  1119. You're going to find

  1120. every loophole

  1121. and every way

  1122. to get academic success

1123. without putting on the work,

  1124. without doing it honestly.

  1125. Or maybe

  1126. you've met someone

  1127. and it seems that

  1128. they're not just happy

1129. with a little goodnight kiss,

  1130. they want something more.

  1131. You know,

1132. they want to have sex

  1133. outside of marriage.

  1134. And you know that

  1135. as a Christian,

  1136. you probably shouldn't

  1137. be doing that.

  1138. That, you know,

1139. sex is a good thing

  1140. for marriage.

1141. And you decide in your mind,

1142. I'm not going to do that,

  1143. but your heart

1144. is still longing for sin.

  1145. You know,

1146. how do you wrestle with that?

1147. How do you deal with,

  1148. you know,

  1149. my heart is sinful,

1150. but I know I need to do

  1151. this right thing.

  1152. What do you do

  1153. when your health

1154. isn't what it used to be?

1155. And you need to figure out

1156. how you're going to provide

  1157. for your family.

  1158. What do you do

  1159. when your employees

  1160. are driving you insane?

  1161. What are you doing

  1162. when you can't

  1163. stand your parents?

  1164. What are you doing

  1165. when your kids'

  1166. rebelliousness

  1167. goes to a whole

  1168. nother level?

  1169. What does this story

  1170. have to say

  1171. for each of us?

  1172. What does this story

1173. have to say to you?

  1174. What does this story

  1175. have to say

  1176. about your obedience?

  1177. obedience.

1178. The call of the gospel

  1179. to the Christian

  1180. is obedience

  1181. and perfection.

  1182. To be perfect.

  1183. But not

1184. to have our own perfection.

1185. Because even if our actions

  1186. are pure,

  1187. very often our thoughts

  1188. and our hearts aren't.

1189. The call of the gospel

  1190. is to lay down

  1191. our efforts at holiness

  1192. and to cling

  1193. onto Jesus.

  1194. To hold onto him.

  1195. To look at him

  1196. in the wilderness

  1197. and see his obedience

  1198. and say,

  1199. you know,

  1200. I probably can't be holy

  1201. like Jesus.

  1202. But Jesus was holy.

  1203. Jesus was obedient

1204. so that I could have

  1205. his obedience.

  1206. Not that we abandon,

  1207. you know,

  1208. our pursuit of holiness.

  1209. Not that we abandon,

  1210. you know,

  1211. our efforts

  1212. to love God

  1213. and his law

1214. and to follow those things.

  1215. Because, you know,

  1216. they're difficult.

  1217. But in that,

  1218. we can say

  1219. that our holiness

  1220. and righteousness

  1221. isn't built

  1222. on my ability

  1223. to be perfect.

  1224. You know,

  1225. my holiness

  1226. and righteousness

  1227. isn't depending

  1228. on my ability

  1229. to follow

  1230. every single rule

1231. that I've set for myself.

  1232. Because I don't.

  1233. But that my righteousness

  1234. is based on Jesus.

  1235. On Jesus,

  1236. who in the wilderness

  1237. faced off

  1238. against Satan.

  1239. And who said,

  1240. I'm not going

  1241. to worship Satan.

  1242. I'm not going

  1243. to worship anything else

  1244. that is not God.

  1245. Who said,

1246. I'm going to be trusting

  1247. God for my provision,

  1248. for my sustenance.

  1249. this means that

  1250. when we obey,

  1251. we can thank God

  1252. because our obedience

  1253. is his.

  1254. It means that

  1255. when we're struggling

  1256. to obey,

1257. when we can't figure out

1258. what is right or wrong,

  1259. when we don't know

  1260. if we're obeying

  1261. or if we're sitting,

  1262. that we can look

  1263. to Christ's obedience.

  1264. It means that

  1265. when we wake up

  1266. and we find ourselves

  1267. waist-deep in sin,

  1268. that we can repent,

1269. that we can trust God,

  1270. that we can sing

  1271. that line from

  1272. before the throne

  1273. where, you know,

  1274. Satan is going

  1275. to tempt me

1276. to despair at my sin,

1277. but I'm going to look.

1278. I'm going to look up

1279. and I'm going to see Christ.

1280. I'm going to see Jesus

  1281. who is perfect

  1282. and holiness,

  1283. who through

  1284. his temptation,

  1285. through his struggles

  1286. in the desert,

  1287. through his ultimate

  1288. sacrifice on the cross,

  1289. has made me right

  1290. with God.

  1291. Jesus' coming

  1292. was on an accident.

  1293. You know,

  1294. when God created

  1295. the earth,

  1296. when God gave Israel

  1297. their law,

  1298. he created it

  1299. knowing that these people

  1300. would need a savior,

  1301. that they would need

  1302. a Christ.

  1303. Christ's coming

1304. wasn't out of the blue.

  1305. All the things

  1306. that God does

  1307. through the Bible,

  1308. all the things

  1309. that Jesus does

  1310. are intentional.

  1311. you know,

  1312. they're there

  1313. to show us

  1314. about him,

  1315. about us,

  1316. about our need

  1317. of him.

  1318. They show us

1319. that he was God's son.

  1320. They show us

  1321. that Jesus

  1322. going to meet Satan

  1323. in the desert

  1324. was not an accident,

1325. that God took him there,

  1326. that Jesus

  1327. followed him there.

  1328. Jesus

  1329. was to be

  1330. the true Israel,

  1331. to do the things

  1332. that Israel

  1333. could not do.

  1334. Where Israel

  1335. failed,

  1336. where Israel

  1337. rebelled,

  1338. where Israel

  1339. did not trust

  1340. in God's faithfulness,

  1341. Jesus

  1342. does all those things

  1343. and Jesus

  1344. obeys

  1345. where we

  1346. cannot.

  1347. This morning,

1348. I got on the MTR

  1349. and I got on

  1350. Tin How

1351. and I got on the train

1352. and I went all the way

  1353. to Sian Poon Station

  1354. which opened this morning

  1355. and it's fantastic.

  1356. I'm so excited.

  1357. My commute will be

  1358. 12 minutes shorter.

  1359. But, you know,

  1360. Sian Poon Station opened

  1361. but Sian Poon Station

  1362. is not an afterthought.

  1363. Yes, you know,

  1364. Kennedy Town

  1365. and HKU stations,

  1366. you know,

1367. they opened back in December

  1368. but Sian Poon Station

  1369. is not an afterthought.

  1370. Sian Poon Station

1371. is part of a plan

  1372. all along.

  1373. And I think

  1374. we forget

  1375. that Jesus

1376. is a part of the plan

  1377. all along.

  1378. I think sometimes

  1379. we live

1380. and we look at the Bible

  1381. as if,

  1382. you know,

  1383. Jesus was this thing

  1384. that God did

  1385. at the last minute

  1386. to save us

  1387. because we realized

  1388. that everything

  1389. wasn't going

  1390. according to plan.

  1391. You know,

  1392. I'm convinced

1393. when I look at the Bible

  1394. that from creation,

  1395. Jesus was God's plan

  1396. for salvation.

  1397. I think that's why

  1398. John the Baptist,

  1399. when he saw

  1400. his cousin Jesus coming,

  1401. he looked at him

  1402. and said,

1403. behold the Lamb of God

  1404. who takes away

1405. the sin of the world.

  1406. He says,

  1407. look,

  1408. look at Christ

  1409. because this isn't

  1410. just,

  1411. you know,

  1412. a man from Nazareth

  1413. here today.

  1414. This is a picture

  1415. of everything

1416. that we've been waiting for.

  1417. He is the new

  1418. Passover Lamb.

  1419. He is the new

  1420. sacrificial Lamb

1421. that is going to free us

  1422. from our slavery

  1423. to sin

  1424. because this is

  1425. the same God

  1426. who was there

  1427. in the beginning

  1428. of creation

  1429. because look,

  1430. this is a man

  1431. who,

  1432. unlike Adam,

  1433. when facing off

  1434. against Satan,

  1435. will not sin

  1436. but will obey.

  1437. This is the man

  1438. who is the answer

  1439. to the promise

  1440. of Abraham.

  1441. This is the man

1442. who is going to be

  1443. the blessing

  1444. to the whole world.

  1445. You know,

  1446. this is

  1447. a king,

  1448. a king who's

  1449. better than David

  1450. because,

  1451. you know,

  1452. he doesn't just kill

1453. the giants of our sin

1454. but he is a king

  1455. that lives

  1456. a good

  1457. and perfect legacy

  1458. for his children,

  1459. a legacy that means

1460. that when we're not perfect,

  1461. we inherit

  1462. his righteousness.

  1463. This is the one

  1464. who builds

  1465. a temple

  1466. in the hearts

  1467. of his people,

  1468. a temple

  1469. that cannot be destroyed.

  1470. This

  1471. is Jesus

  1472. like Hosea

  1473. who comes back

  1474. time and time again

  1475. for his people

  1476. who wander

  1477. time and time again

  1478. back

  1479. into adulterous sin.

  1480. John the Baptist

  1481. says,

  1482. behold

  1483. the Lamb

  1484. of God.

  1485. Look,

  1486. this is our

  1487. obedience

  1488. and our

  1489. righteousness,

  1490. not self-made

  1491. but from God,

  1492. a gift

  1493. to his people.

  1494. I think

  1495. it's far too easy

  1496. to see

  1497. Christ

  1498. as something

  1499. other than

  1500. the fountain

  1501. from our obedience,

  1502. the fountain

  1503. from which

  1504. our obedience

  1505. comes

  1506. and the source

  1507. of our ability

  1508. to be good

  1509. and to obey

  1510. God's law.

  1511. John the Baptist

  1512. calls the people

  1513. here to look

  1514. to Christ

  1515. and not at anything

  1516. else.

  1517. Though when we're

  1518. trying to figure out

  1519. how we're going to

  1520. provide for our family

  1521. or how we're going

  1522. to pass this exam

  1523. or when we're looking

  1524. for significance

  1525. or value,

  1526. God wants to show

  1527. us another way.

  1528. He wants to show

  1529. us that

  1530. we don't have

  1531. to be the pilots

  1532. of our own destiny,

  1533. that our obedience

  1534. today,

  1535. that our security

  1536. in eternity

  1537. is tied up

  1538. together

  1539. with Jesus.

  1540. You know,

  1541. I wish this was

  1542. something that

  1543. I didn't forget

  1544. so easily.

  1545. You know,

  1546. I think

1547. a lot of the time

  1548. I think I need

  1549. to make my own

  1550. righteousness.

  1551. I need to succeed

  1552. on my own.

  1553. Sometimes I even

  1554. forget God's

  1555. faithfulness

  1556. altogether

  1557. and I say,

  1558. actually,

  1559. that's going to be

  1560. a lot easier

  1561. if I just sin,

  1562. if I just do

  1563. things my way.

  1564. I think God

  1565. knows this.

  1566. I think God

  1567. knows that we

  1568. forget easily.

  1569. I think he gives

  1570. us the Bible.

  1571. I think he gives

  1572. us the Old Testament.

  1573. I think he gives

  1574. us the New Testament.

  1575. I think he gives

  1576. us Christ

  1577. to remind us

  1578. of these things,

  1579. to remind us

  1580. that our obedience

  1581. isn't self-manufactured,

  1582. but it comes

  1583. from God.

  1584. Today,

  1585. we're going to be

  1586. celebrating the

  1587. communion meal

  1588. together.

  1589. And for this

  1590. communion meal,

  1591. it does many

  1592. things.

  1593. For a Christian,

  1594. it's a reminder

  1595. of the cross.

  1596. It's a reminder

  1597. of Christ's

  1598. sacrifice for our

  1599. salvation.

  1600. Today,

  1601. I hope it's

  1602. a reminder that

  1603. Jesus is not

  1604. our backup plan.

  1605. It isn't the

  1606. plan B to

  1607. God's righteousness

  1608. for his people.

  1609. You know,

  1610. in the Passover meal,

  1611. in the communion,

  1612. we see parallels.

  1613. We see that Jesus

  1614. is the Passover

  1615. lamb,

  1616. that instead of

  1617. freedom from slavery,

  1618. he offers us

  1619. freedom from sin

  1620. and death.

  1621. That in communion,

  1622. the bread is his

  1623. body broken for us,

  1624. and that his blood

  1625. pays the price for

  1626. our righteousness,

  1627. righteousness,

  1628. just like the

  1629. blood protected

  1630. Israel from God's

  1631. judgment.

  1632. Passover is about

  1633. God saving his

  1634. people from slavery.

  1635. And communion is

  1636. about what Christ

  1637. does to secure

  1638. our salvation.

  1639. It's what Christ

  1640. does to enable us

  1641. to be obedient

  1642. and faithful.

  1643. So I'm going to

  1644. ask the communion

  1645. stewards to come

  1646. forward this morning.

1647. I want us to think

  1648. about a couple of

  1649. things.

1650. I want us to think

  1651. about our obedience.

  1652. Where does our

  1653. righteousness come

  1654. from?

1655. How is it that we

  1656. are made right

  1657. with God?

1658. Do we earn it by

  1659. being good, by

  1660. keeping the laws?

  1661. Or do we wake

  1662. up each day and

  1663. put on Christ's

  1664. righteousness?

  1665. Who is our

  1666. savior?

  1667. Who is our king?

  1668. You know, like

  1669. these kids, are we

  1670. saying, Hosanna,

  1671. Jesus is our king?

  1672. Or are we our

  1673. own king?

  1674. Is there something

  1675. else that we're

  1676. worshiping?

  1677. Now, in this

  1678. communion meal,

  1679. this is a

  1680. sacrament that as

  1681. Christians, we do

  1682. that says that our

  1683. trust is in God.

  1684. It's something that

1685. we do as a family.

  1686. And so if you're

  1687. here today and

  1688. you, and Jesus

  1689. isn't your king, we

  1690. ask that you don't

  1691. take part in this.

  1692. But watch and

  1693. observe.

  1694. Ask the person

  1695. sitting next to you.

  1696. Come talk to me

  1697. afterwards.

  1698. Ask me or ask

  1699. Eric what it's

  1700. about.

  1701. But for those

  1702. who are Christ's,

  1703. for those of us

  1704. who say that we're

  1705. going to put on

  1706. Christ's righteousness,

  1707. we're going to

  1708. look at Christ's

  1709. obedience in the

  1710. desert and say,

  1711. yes, that is our

  1712. obedience.

1713. I want to invite you

  1714. guys to, as you

  1715. feel led, come

  1716. forward and collect

  1717. the communion

  1718. elements.

  1719. And once you've

  1720. done that, return

  1721. to your seats and

  1722. afterwards we'll

  1723. take the communion

  1724. meal together.

  1725. here.

  1726. Let's go.
