  1. that you desired these words to be written,

  2. that you had these words written in such a way

  3. that in every generation and for every people group,

  4. they could speak to us.

  5. They can only do this, Father, because it is ultimately your word.

  6. And we confess before you, Father,

  7. that we cannot understand your word purely by our minds.

  8. Father, we know you want us to use the best of our mind,

  9. but even the best of our mind is not enough.

  10. We need, Father, your Holy Spirit to humble us

  11. and create within us a hunger to know your word

  12. and to hear your word, to know you and to hear you.

  13. And, Father, this we ask, that you would so bless us

  14. that we have a desire to know you and to be known by you

  15. and to hear you speak to us and have you speak into our lives.

  16. Father, we ask that you would do this at this time.

  17. As we open your word.

  18. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus,

  19. your Son and our Savior.

  20. Amen.

  21. Please be seated.

  22. I might disappoint a lot of you this morning.

  23. You might find this sermon boring.

  24. It's a very unusual sermon for me.

  25. It's not one that I do very often.

  26. And it's going to be on Psalm 67,

  27. and you're going to need your Bibles if you have them.

  28. But here's what happened.

  29. This is our last Sunday of doing Psalms, at least for a season.

  30. Next Sunday, we go back into the book of Luke,

  31. and we'll be doing Luke for quite a long season.

  32. And so I, with the other people who've been speaking over the summer

  33. in the different Psalms,

  34. I asked each of the speakers to pick a Psalm.

  35. And I just sort of asked them to not all pick laments

  36. or not all pick happy Psalms,

  37. but have a bit of a variety.

  38. And after they had picked,

  39. I've been praying about what two Psalms I would pick.

  40. And one of the Psalms I decided that I felt led to preach on

  41. was Psalm 67,

  42. which is what we're going to look at in a moment.

  43. And the reason I chose Psalm 67,

  44. I mean, apart from the fact that I was praying

  45. and asking God to tell me what it is that we,

  46. the congregation,

  47. needed to spend time thinking about and hearing,

  48. was I knew a little bit about this Psalm

  49. in terms of how it's been important

  50. in other generations of Christians.

  51. that when the English Reformation was going on,

  52. and though Thomas Cramner,

  53. who ended up being martyred

  54. as part of the English Reformation,

  55. as he was trying to order

  56. and put together how it is that Christians should worship,

  57. not only on Sundays, but throughout the week,

  58. and he wanted to try to create a means

  59. by which ordinary people

  60. could worship throughout the week,

  61. and also how they could worship on Sunday.

  62. He was very aware of the fact

  63. that throughout Christian history,

  64. whenever there were reform movements

  65. within the church before the Reformation,

  66. there was always reform movements,

  67. and that many of the monastic movements

  68. had been part, when they first started,

  69. they were part of a Reformation movement

  70. within the church to call the church

  71. and call Christian people to pray,

  72. that throughout the centuries,

  73. a psalm,

  74. there were several passages of scripture

  75. that were important,

  76. and one of those passages of scripture

  77. that had been important

  78. in earlier reform movements,

  79. and whenever people had a heart to pray,

  80. and one of those psalms that they,

  81. one of those passages of scripture

  82. that earlier reformers thought

  83. was very important was Psalm 67.

  84. And so, if you go back to Cranmer,

  85. and it was important in the Anglican tradition,

  86. in Canada,

  87. up until 1962,

  88. if you were to have done evening prayer,

  89. you would have found the text of Psalm 67

  90. in the evening prayer service.

  91. And Cranmer just took it out of,

  92. he was aware of the fact

  93. that earlier reform movements

  94. saw that this was an important prayer,

  95. an important psalm,

  96. for Christians to pray,

  97. and to sing,

  98. and to hear,

  99. and to think about.

  100. And I knew this about Psalm 67,

  101. so I thought,

  102. well, we haven't talked about Psalm 67,

  103. so I'll pick Psalm 67,

  104. and that's what I picked.

  105. But here's the thing

  106. which is a bit different about this sermon.

  107. If you come to the church,

  108. you know that I,

  109. you know,

  110. I do a sermon,

  111. and usually there's,

  112. like,

  113. on the screen there'll be points,

  114. and I sort of come up,

  115. and I set tension,

  116. and I come up to the point,

  117. and then,

  118. and all,

  119. but here's what happened to me this week.

  120. I sort of had a bit of a struggle

  121. with God all week,

  122. because,

  123. you know,

  124. I,

  125. I don't have Hebrew,

  126. so I have to depend upon

  127. academic commentaries

  128. that will help me with the Hebrew,

  129. and,

  130. and make sure that I understand the text,

  131. and I,

  132. I've done all that work all week,

  133. but,

  134. what,

  135. here's the funny thing,

  136. that,

  137. what kept happening,

  138. kept happening to me,

  139. is that I wasn't able to think of,

  140. like,

  141. like,

  142. like,

  143. points,

  144. I kept having to,

  145. pray,

  146. now,

  147. you see,

  148. this is a little bit of an awkward thing,

  149. for a sermon,

  150. because,

  151. you know,

  152. you have to get up,

  153. and,

  154. and actually sort of have points,

  155. in a sermon,

  156. but,

  157. I couldn't keep thinking of,

  158. really clear points,

  159. I just keep,

  160. kept feeling that I had to pray,

  161. Psalm 67,

  162. and so,

  163. you know,

  164. me being a,

  165. a typical,

  166. uh,

  167. male Canadian,

  168. I,

  169. um,

  170. I sort of wanted to maybe,

  171. you know,

  172. get,

  173. try to get the right thing going on,

  174. I kept,

  175. of course,

  176. praying,

  177. you know,

  178. I always pray for God's direction,

  179. guidance,

  180. and I'm praying for God's guidance,

  181. and direction,

  182. and,

  183. and every time I come and spend time on Psalm 67,

  184. I keep praying,

  185. the Psalm,

  186. and trying to figure out how to pray the Psalm,

  187. and realizing how I'm not praying the Psalm,

  188. and how I have to learn from praying the Psalm,

  189. and,

  190. and then finally,

  191. and then finally,

  192. I realized that,

  193. that I wasn't really to do a proper sermon with you this morning,

  194. was that I was to sort of share with you Psalm 67 in such a way that hopefully you would want to pray it with me.

  195. Amen.

  196. So if you have your Bibles,

  197. please turn in them to Psalm 67,

  198. and,

  199. and that's what we're just going to do,

  200. and if you're not really interested in praying Psalm 67,

  201. then I,

  202. I guess you can have a little bit of a nap for a period of time,

  203. but I'm,

  204. not that I'm going to spend the whole time praying,

  205. but I'm going to sort of just share sort of how God was teaching me this week about the importance of praying,

  206. and,

  207. and for some of you,

  208. if you,

  209. if you,

  210. if you manage to track with this whole time,

  211. you'll hear that every time I prayed this morning,

  212. my prayers have been all informed by Psalm 67,

  213. and,

  214. and,

  215. and I really actually,

  216. I,

  217. the,

  218. part of the thing I could see about this Psalm is I struggled with it.

  219. You know how in,

  220. in our modern day,

  221. people talk about moral compasses,

  222. often with ethics courses and stuff like that,

  223. and,

  224. and people saying we need ethics in business,

  225. or ethics in government,

  226. or ethics in,

  227. in,

  228. in the workforce,

  229. and people talk about the,

  230. the need to have a moral compass,

  231. and,

  232. and I realized that Psalm 67 is a type of moral and spiritual compass that the,

  233. the Christians and the church regularly need to have.

  234. So I'm going to read all of 67,

  235. Psalm 67,

  236. it's just seven verses,

  237. and then,

  238. then we'll go back,

  239. and we'll sort of look at how we can pray this Psalm.

  240. So,

  241. Psalm 67,

  242. if you don't have a Bible,

  243. there's always extra Bibles up here at the front,

  244. and,

  245. uh,

  246. you're free to have one.

  247. And here's how the Psalm goes.

  248. Actually,

  249. the,

  250. the little introduction to the Psalm goes to the choir master with string instruments,

  251. a Psalm,

  252. a Psalm.

  253. May God be gracious to us and bless us,

  254. and make his face to shine upon us,

  255. that your way may be known on earth,

  256. your saving power among all nations.

  257. let the peoples praise you,

  258. O God,

  259. let all the peoples praise you.

  260. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,

  261. for you judge the peoples with equity,

  262. and guide the nations upon earth.

  263. Let the peoples praise you,

  264. O God,

  265. let all the peoples praise you.

  266. The earth has yielded its increase,

  267. God,

  268. our God,

  269. shall bless us,

  270. God shall bless us,

  271. but all the ends of the earth fear you.

  272. And,

  273. uh,

  274. if you were a very old fashioned Anglican at this point in time,

  275. you would say,

  276. glory be to the Father,

  277. and to the Son,

  278. and to the Holy Ghost,

  279. as it was in the beginning,

  280. is now,

  281. and ever shall be,

  282. world without end.

  283. Amen.

  284. Ha ha.

  285. That's just for the closet old Anglicans in the room.

  286. So here's the thing.

  287. I start to try to pray this psalm.

  288. May God be gracious to us and bless us,

  289. and make his face to shine upon us,

  290. that your way may be known on earth,

  291. your saving power among all nations,

  292. that the peoples praise you,

  293. O God,

  294. let all the peoples praise you.

  295. And the first thing that I realized was this,

  296. that on one hand,

  297. God was putting within me,

  298. I mean,

  299. he said,

  300. I could really,

  301. I mean,

  302. he wanted me to spend time in the commentaries,

  303. he wanted me to spend time studying the psalm,

  304. and thinking upon the psalm,

  305. but I kept,

  306. I kept having this pressure,

  307. that he didn't just want me to,

  308. to understand it,

  309. he wanted me to pray it.

  310. And,

  311. and so not only while I was sitting there,

  312. in the,

  313. in the Starbucks,

  314. or other places where I was working on the sermon,

  315. but while I was doing other things,

  316. and one of the very,

  317. very first things I,

  318. I realized,

  319. is that it was hard for me to pray the psalm,

  320. because I kept trying to think of what I wanted to say,

  321. rather than remembering the psalm.

  322. And it,

  323. it was as if God was speaking into my life,

  324. that George,

  325. too often you,

  326. and too often the church,

  327. we're filled with what we want to say,

  328. and we're not filled with just actually hearing,

  329. and being formed by what I want you to say.

  330. So I realized I had to start paying far more attention,

  331. to the actual words,

  332. virtually memorizing the psalm,

  333. so that while I was riding my bicycle,

  334. or walking,

  335. or in other places,

  336. that the psalm,

  337. would,

  338. would come out of me as something that I had to pray.

  339. But,

  340. may God be gracious to us,

  341. and bless us,

  342. and make his face to shine upon us,

  343. that your way may be known on earth,

  344. that your saving power among all nations.

  345. Let the peoples praise you,

  346. O God,

  347. let all the peoples praise you.

  348. And as I'm trying to learn how to pray this psalm,

  349. as I feel the pressure of the Holy Spirit,

  350. that I'm called to pray this psalm,

  351. and then it was as if the Holy Spirit convicts me,

  352. that I kept changing the words of the psalm,

  353. in a really important way.

  354. And the way I kept changing the words of the psalm,

  355. is I would say,

  356. God be gracious to me,

  357. and bless me,

  358. and make your face shine upon me.

  359. That's not what the psalm says.

  360. The psalm wasn't asking me to pray this psalm for me.

  361. The psalm,

  362. the word of God was asking me to learn to pray this psalm for us.

  363. And day after day,

  364. I would be trying to pray this psalm,

  365. and it was as if the Holy Spirit kept having to say,

  366. George, what did you just say?

  367. What did you just say?

  368. You said me again.

  369. You shouldn't keep saying me.

  370. There's times when we pray for just ourselves.

  371. I mean, there's times when I should just pray for me.

  372. That it's not as if the Bible says

  373. that there's never times that I should just say,

  374. Lord, please help me.

  375. Lord, please do this for me.

  376. It's not that the Bible never says that we should do it,

  377. but this psalm,

  378. which has been part of reform movements

  379. throughout the history of the church,

  380. that early reformers,

  381. whether it was Gregory or Galatianus

  382. or Benedict or Cranmer,

  383. recognized that learning to pray this psalm

  384. was really important for the church

  385. to have this form how we pray

  386. and how we understand the church

  387. and how we understand the world,

  388. that this part of God's word

  389. has an authoritative power

  390. that's to form how we are to understand

  391. how we are to pray,

  392. and it's asking me to pray for us.

  393. It's asking you to pray for us.

  394. May God be gracious to us and bless us

  395. and make his face to shine upon us,

  396. that your way may be known on earth,

  397. your saving power among all nations.

  398. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  399. Let all the peoples praise you.

  400. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,

  401. for you judge the peoples with equity

  402. and guide the nations upon earth.

  403. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  404. Let all the peoples praise you.

  405. The earth has yielded its increase.

  406. God or God shall bless us.

  407. God shall bless us.

  408. Let all the ends of the earth fear you.

  409. So one of the things I learned

  410. when I was doing the commentaries

  411. is that it's very intentional in English

  412. that the requests are may and let,

  413. that these are prayers of humble desire.

  414. It's verb tenses of humble desire

  415. and that God wants to form within us

  416. humble desires

  417. and form and channel and grow within us

  418. humble desires as we approach it.

  419. and therefore the first word is may

  420. and then the rest of it is let, let, let, let, let.

  421. And so the very, very first humble desire

  422. that I am to have for us,

  423. that we are to have for us,

  424. is to ask God for grace.

  425. And, you know, I'm thinking about this.

  426. I'm in a Starbucks.

  427. I'm looking around at the room.

  428. In fact, I just had a conversation

  429. with a young guy.

  430. I'd had quite a few conversations with him.

  431. We have a very, very unusual relationship.

  432. He can't get at all

  433. why anybody would want to know anything at all

  434. about the Christian faith.

  435. He's young.

  436. He's good looking.

  437. He's in really good shape.

  438. He's financially successful.

  439. He's a hit with the ladies.

  440. And life is going very good.

  441. Why does he need grace?

  442. I mean, that's what he says.

  443. And the fact of the matter is,

  444. is that a lot of us in the church

  445. are just like that young man.

  446. That we don't really think we need grace.

  447. I mean, we know we need grace sometimes

  448. because sometimes we feel really guilty.

  449. And sometimes we feel like we're really broken.

  450. Sometimes we don't feel like we're very successful.

  451. We feel like a failure.

  452. And so at times like that,

  453. to ask for grace is sort of easy for us,

  454. at least for the moment.

  455. But a lot of the time,

  456. we're sort of like our culture.

  457. And if things are going very well for us,

  458. we don't really think we need grace.

  459. Because grace refers to God

  460. being kind and merciful to us.

  461. And I realized as I'm trying to learn

  462. how to pray this,

  463. how easy it is for me

  464. to actually think that

  465. like there's just sort of me.

  466. And I have these things

  467. and I have these abilities

  468. and I have these powers.

  469. And we have these things

  470. and we have these powers.

  471. And we don't sort of really need

  472. to depend upon God's mercy and kindness

  473. because it's a little bit like

  474. if somebody was to go out with me

  475. after church and offer to buy me a coffee,

  476. they say, no, no, it's fine.

  477. I can cover this.

  478. I don't need your grace.

  479. I don't need your kind.

  480. I can cover this.

  481. And so we sit in church

  482. and we hear language of grace,

  483. but actually sort of in our hearts,

  484. we don't really feel we need very much right now

  485. unless we're very broken.

  486. But this psalm says,

  487. may God be gracious to us

  488. and bless us

  489. and make his face to shine upon us

  490. that your way may be known on earth,

  491. your saving power among all nations.

  492. Let the peoples praise you, God.

  493. Let all the peoples praise you.

  494. The psalm is wanting me to pray for us,

  495. wanting us to pray for us,

  496. that we would receive grace from God,

  497. that we would receive God's mercy and kindness.

  498. Many of us struggle with thinking

  499. that God owes us something.

  500. And we get angry and mad at God

  501. when things don't go the way we want

  502. because we think he owes us.

  503. And this psalm isn't talking about anything like that.

  504. It's saying that who I am is a person.

  505. Who is George?

  506. Who is Church of the Messiah?

  507. It is a community of people

  508. that as a community and as individuals,

  509. we always need the kindness and mercy and grace of God.

  510. That there's no time, no instant

  511. that I do not need kindness from God.

  512. So the psalm says that there's these three things.

  513. May God be gracious to us and bless us

  514. and make his face to shine upon us

  515. that your way may be known on earth,

  516. your saving power among all nations.

  517. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  518. Let all the peoples praise you.

  519. And the second thing that this psalm is asking us

  520. to pray for is that God would bless us.

  521. And I realized as I'm trying to think about this

  522. that first of all,

  523. I have a very, very weak understanding of blessing.

  524. And I know, you know, once again,

  525. it's one of the interesting things

  526. about working on sermons in a Starbucks

  527. as you're just observing things going on

  528. and people and maybe hearing snatches of conversation.

  529. And sometimes it's a bit of a reflection

  530. or mirror as to what's going on in my own life.

  531. And the whole idea of blessing

  532. has been sort of lost in our culture.

  533. Like in churches, often now,

  534. when we even talk about when I went to the service

  535. and I was blessed,

  536. I could really feel God's blessing.

  537. It's sort of as if we have a communal time

  538. of a certain type of emotion.

  539. And if we have a communal time

  540. of a certain type of emotion

  541. or in my private life,

  542. I have a certain type of emotion,

  543. I feel blessed.

  544. And the world increasingly has this sense

  545. that if there is a God at all,

  546. he's tiny and puny

  547. and doesn't really matter.

  548. But there's other big forces

  549. that are going on in the world.

  550. And there's things that we can accomplish

  551. and things that just are.

  552. And it's just we take it for granted

  553. that Canada has prosperity.

  554. We take it for granted

  555. that Canada has safety.

  556. We take it for granted.

  557. If we have health, we take it for granted.

  558. If we have minds at work,

  559. we take it for granted.

  560. If our bodies are working well,

  561. we take it for granted.

  562. We take it for granted.

  563. We take it for granted.

  564. And we don't have a sense,

  565. increasingly,

  566. that we are completely

  567. and utterly dependent upon blessing.

  568. That every good thing that comes to us

  569. is a blessing that comes from God.

  570. And that blessing isn't just an emotion

  571. that we have by ourselves or with others,

  572. but that blessing,

  573. that everything good we have,

  574. whether it's a moral good,

  575. an aesthetic good,

  576. an intellectual good,

  577. a social good,

  578. an economic good,

  579. a physical good,

  580. or a spiritual good,

  581. that every single good thing

  582. that comes to us

  583. only comes from God as a blessing.

  584. That it isn't that there's all these things

  585. that I just accomplished

  586. or that I just earned

  587. or that I just own

  588. or that I just possess,

  589. but that everything that I have

  590. or that we have

  591. is a blessing

  592. that comes from God

  593. if it's good.

  594. Like with no exception.

  595. And that's not denigrating

  596. or making small the spiritual

  597. because it's a,

  598. God is asking me

  599. to understand

  600. and to pray that,

  601. to understand who God is.

  602. This is one of the things

  603. that I realized

  604. as I was praying to God

  605. that what this text was telling me

  606. was to say in a sense,

  607. who's God?

  608. God is the blessed one

  609. who blesses.

  610. And who is George?

  611. And who is Church of the Messiah?

  612. George is one who only,

  613. who always needs blessing

  614. and is always dependent

  615. upon blessing.

  616. Who is Church of the Messiah?

  617. Church of the Messiah

  618. always needs blessing

  619. and is always dependent

  620. upon blessing.

  621. And then we could go on further.

  622. The George and Messiah

  623. often don't think of themselves

  624. as needing blessing

  625. or recognizing blessing.

  626. George doesn't recognize it.

  627. George is more comfortable

  628. with things,

  629. just taking things for granted

  630. that our church

  631. just can desire

  632. to just take things for granted.

  633. But God doesn't say

  634. to pray that way.

  635. He says,

  636. George,

  637. I want you to pray

  638. in such a way

  639. that you ask for my blessing.

  640. That you realize, George,

  641. that you and the congregation

  642. always are dependent

  643. upon God's blessing.

  644. that I want you to pray

  645. to have more blessing.

  646. And I want you to pray that

  647. to recognize

  648. that every good thing you have

  649. is a blessing

  650. that comes from you.

  651. And not to take it for granted

  652. with pride,

  653. presumption,

  654. and arrogance.

  655. Or with anger

  656. when others seem

  657. to have different blessings

  658. or more blessings.

  659. It's all blessing.

  660. May God be gracious to us

  661. and bless us

  662. and make his face

  663. to shine upon us

  664. that your way

  665. may be known on earth,

  666. your saving power

  667. among all nations.

  668. Let the peoples praise you,

  669. O God.

  670. Let all the peoples praise you.

  671. May God be gracious to us

  672. to pray that God

  673. would pour out his kindness

  674. and mercy and grace upon us,

  675. that God would bless us,

  676. to pray that God

  677. would pour out his blessing upon us.

  678. That's not only good things,

  679. not only a recognition

  680. that he is giving us good things

  681. and so he loves us,

  682. but also a power

  683. for those good things

  684. to continue to happen.

  685. That's what blessing is.

  686. And then this very,

  687. very funny thing

  688. that he says

  689. that we're to ask

  690. that God would make his face

  691. to shine upon us.

  692. And it sort of struck me

  693. that it's so easy for me

  694. to just think

  695. and for us to just think

  696. that everything just sort of happens

  697. for natural reasons.

  698. That somehow,

  699. I know the rivers just flow

  700. and the sun just shines

  701. and rain just comes

  702. and things just work

  703. and everything is sort of

  704. just sort of impersonal

  705. and there's just me managing

  706. these impersonal things,

  707. but the word of God

  708. is reminding us

  709. it's very, very interesting

  710. that it uses the word face

  711. because it's so easy

  712. just to think of forces

  713. and energy

  714. and things which are impersonal.

  715. But the Bible is asking me

  716. to long for

  717. seeing the face of God

  718. smile at us, upon us.

  719. not to see

  720. the whole world

  721. controlled by impersonal forces

  722. that we try

  723. through our science

  724. and technology

  725. and intellectual abilities

  726. and other types of abilities

  727. to wrestle

  728. and to harness

  729. and to channel for our own good.

  730. It's not telling us

  731. not to try to think,

  732. but to understand

  733. that everything that exists

  734. was created by God

  735. and that God

  736. holds all things

  737. constantly in existence

  738. and that behind

  739. and underneath

  740. and supporting

  741. and upholding

  742. every apparently

  743. impersonal force

  744. is God

  745. who has a face

  746. who is a person

  747. who upholds it

  748. and causes it

  749. to happen

  750. and to be.

  751. That I do not live

  752. in an impersonal

  753. empty universe.

  754. I am not

  755. a ghost

  756. and a machine.

  757. that the world

  758. is held

  759. in the hands

  760. of the personal God

  761. who maintains it

  762. who is bigger

  763. than all things

  764. and that I am

  765. to come to God

  766. understanding

  767. that he is bigger

  768. than all things

  769. and he is a person

  770. that he desires

  771. to smile upon me

  772. and to smile upon us.

  773. May God be gracious

  774. to us

  775. and bless us

  776. and make his face

  777. to shine upon us.

  778. God wants us

  779. to pray this.

  780. He wants you

  781. to pray it

  782. in your private devotions.

  783. He wants us

  784. to pray it together.

  785. He wants us

  786. to pray

  787. may God be gracious

  788. to us

  789. and bless us

  790. and make his face

  791. to shine upon us.

  792. But he doesn't want us

  793. to pray these things.

  794. He doesn't want me

  795. to pray these things

  796. so that people

  797. will think well of me.

  798. Or that,

  799. I don't know,

  800. or that necessarily

  801. our church

  802. will get bigger

  803. or we'll have

  804. a particular reputation

  805. or that all

  806. of these blessings

  807. that we're to ask

  808. for God

  809. to show his grace

  810. and mercy upon us,

  811. to shower upon us,

  812. that he's asking us

  813. to shower his blessing

  814. upon us

  815. and he's asking us

  816. to have an awareness

  817. that we're living

  818. our lives

  819. in such a way

  820. that he smiles upon us

  821. that we're dealing

  822. with shame

  823. and sin

  824. and other types

  825. of things

  826. in our lives

  827. so that he will

  828. smile upon us

  829. and that all of this

  830. is not about us.

  831. That for the entire

  832. rest of the song,

  833. it's all about

  834. God blessing us

  835. so that we can be

  836. a blessing

  837. so that as a result

  838. of the blessing

  839. coming into us

  840. and taking root

  841. in us

  842. but flowing out

  843. of us

  844. to not only

  845. just people

  846. who are like us

  847. but people

  848. who are even

  849. radically different

  850. than us

  851. that the result

  852. will be not

  853. that they are

  854. so grateful

  855. for us

  856. but that they

  857. will be grateful

  858. to God.

  859. So listen to

  860. the psalm again.

  861. Listen to how

  862. he wants us

  863. to learn to pray.

  864. The first three

  865. things that were

  866. in a sense

  867. looks like it's

  868. a very type of

  869. self-centered

  870. things for us

  871. but then the

  872. entire rest

  873. of the psalm

  874. is how this

  875. impacts us

  876. to flow out

  877. of us

  878. to affect

  879. every single

  880. people group

  881. on the planet.

  882. May God

  883. be gracious

  884. to us

  885. and bless us

  886. and make his

  887. face to shine

  888. upon us

  889. that your

  890. way

  891. may be known

  892. on earth.

  893. Your saving

  894. power

  895. among all

  896. nations.

  897. Let the peoples

  898. praise you

  899. O God

  900. let all the

  901. peoples praise

  902. you.

  903. Let the

  904. nations be

  905. glad and sing

  906. for joy.

  907. Why?

  908. For you

  909. judge the

  910. peoples with

  911. equity

  912. and you

  913. guide the

  914. nations upon

  915. earth.

  916. Let the

  917. peoples praise

  918. you O God.

  919. Let all the

  920. peoples praise

  921. you.

  922. The earth

  923. has yielded

  924. its increase.

  925. God our

  926. God shall

  927. bless us.

  928. God shall

  929. bless us.

  930. Let all

  931. the ends

  932. of the

  933. earth

  934. fear you.

  935. may God

  936. be gracious

  937. to us

  938. and bless

  939. us and

  940. make his

  941. face to

  942. shine upon

  943. us.

  944. Why

  945. father do

  946. we ask

  947. this for

  948. ourselves?

  949. Why is

  950. this that we

  951. ask this for

  952. our brothers

  953. and sisters

  954. in Christ

  955. for this

  956. local church

  957. and for

  958. me and

  959. you as

  960. part of

  961. it?

  962. We ask

  963. this father

  964. not so that

  965. people will

  966. think that

  967. we are really

  968. anything at

  969. all but we

  970. ask this

  971. father in

  972. such a way

  973. that your

  974. way your

  975. way and

  976. it's singular

  977. will be known

  978. on all the

  979. earth and

  980. your saving

  981. power among

  982. all nations.

  983. You know

  984. one of the

  985. real big

  986. challenges about

  987. this prayer

  988. for us is

  989. that it's so

  990. easy for us

  991. in our private

  992. prayer life just

  993. to pray about

  994. ourselves and

  995. the people we

  996. like.

  997. And it's so

  998. easy for us

  999. just to pray

  1000. for people who

  1001. are sick to

  1002. get better

  1003. and we

  1004. don't in a

  1005. sense pray

  1006. for the

  1007. people groups.

  1008. It's easy for

  1009. us not to

  1010. pray for

  1011. missionaries

  1012. and people

  1013. bringing relief

  1014. and it's

  1015. easy for us

  1016. to not

  1017. maybe say

  1018. it's easy

  1019. for me to

  1020. not say in

  1021. my prayers

  1022. father in

  1023. this community

  1024. I just look

  1025. at the people

  1026. groups even

  1027. father in

  1028. this community

  1029. I look at

  1030. the gay

  1031. community

  1032. I look at

  1033. the music

  1034. community

  1035. I look at

  1036. the theater

  1037. community

  1038. I look at

  1039. the embassy

  1040. community

  1041. I look father

  1042. the poor

  1043. communities

  1044. I look

  1045. father at

  1046. the different

  1047. immigrant

  1048. communities

  1049. and peoples

  1050. I look

  1051. father upon

  1052. the different

  1053. language groups

  1054. in this

  1055. community

  1056. father I

  1057. look at the

  1058. unemployed

  1059. community

  1060. I look at

  1061. the high

  1062. achieving

  1063. high tech

  1064. community

  1065. and father

  1066. as I look

  1067. at these

  1068. communities

  1069. I ask

  1070. people groups

  1071. and the

  1072. people groups

  1073. of our

  1074. cities

  1075. and our

  1076. country

  1077. and the

  1078. ends of the

  1079. earth

  1080. it is so easy

  1081. for us to become

  1082. spiritually self-satisfied

  1083. narcissistic black holes

1084. and actually feel it's a sign of spiritual maturity

1085. Why? So that my way

  1086. will be known

  1087. throughout the entire time.

  1088. And every single

  1089. people,

  1090. every single people

1091. will come to know my way.

  1092. And every single people

1093. will come to know my Savior.

1094. And I want you to do it

1095. not so people will have you to think about you

1096. or remember you or anything like that.

  1097. Why do I want

1098. in the gay community and in the

1099. banking community and the immigrant

  1100. communities and in

1101. the artistic community and the high

  1102. achieving high tech community

1103. and in the mentally ill community

1104. and then outside of Canada that I

1105. wanted in Kenya and I wanted

1106. in remote parts of China

1107. and Mongolia and Tibet and Kazakhstan.

  1108. I want

1109. all the earth to place.

  1110. I have

1111. people in all these communities

  1112. and my

1113. Holy Spirit is at work

1114. to bring them to a point

1115. where they will know my way

1116. and know my saving power

  1117. and praise me.

1118. And I'm going to use

  1119. imperfect people like you.

1120. And I want you to pray for that grace

1121. and pray for that blessing

1122. and pray for the shining of my face.

1123. So that all these communities

  1124. communities really not even

1125. forget to pray that that would happen,

1126. but I just call you to pray.

1127. Pray for grace and blessing.

  1128. Every people group,

1129. the people groups you like,

1130. the people groups you despise,

1131. the people groups you hate,

1132. I'm not asking you to hate them

1133. or like them or despise them.

1134. You definitely shouldn't hate them.

1135. You definitely shouldn't despise them.

1136. Pray for my grace and life

  1137. and my blessing

1138. and the shining of my face

1139. is so tall upon you

  1140. and present upon you

  1141. that every people group

1142. will have people who praise me.

  1143. and not only that,

  1144. not only that,

1145. I kept reading the first three verses,

1146. but what I want them to know,

  1147. verse four,

  1148. the nations,

  1149. the people groups,

1150. be glad and sing for joy.

  1151. I,

  1152. you know,

  1153. I,

  1154. I,

  1155. I,

  1156. I wanted to,

  1157. I wanted to,

  1158. I wanted to,

  1159. I wanted to,

  1160. I wanted to,

  1161. I wanted to,

  1162. I wanted to,

  1163. I wanted to,

  1164. I wanted languages

1165. that we haven't even heard of yet

1166. because nobody's come across them.

1167. And I want them to sing my praises

  1168. and to be glad

  1169. and sing for joy

  1170. in their heart languages.

  1171. That's the desire of God's heart

1172. is that from the heart language

  1173. of human beings

  1174. that they would sing

  1175. and praise God

  1176. that they would recognize

1177. that he is the perfect judge

1178. and that he is sovereign

  1179. over every people group.

  1180. He's not just sovereign

1181. who wants to be sovereign

1182. over Canada or the United States.

1183. It's not that he wants Canadians

  1184. or Kenyans

  1185. or Chinese

  1186. or Russians

  1187. or others,

1188. that he is to be the sovereign guide

  1189. of every people group

  1190. and listen to me

1191. to cry in our heart.

  1192. That every people group,

1193. let the people praise you,

  1194. oh God,

1195. all the people praise you.

  1196. The earth is healed

  1197. and it's increased.

  1198. God,

  1199. our God,

  1200. shall bless us.

  1201. God shall bless us.

1202. Let all the ends of the earth

  1203. appear.

  1204. Praise to you.

  1205. That every people group

  1206. would have people

  1207. who would recognize it.

  1208. Whatever bounty comes

  1209. from the earth,

  1210. whether it's the bounty

  1211. of plants,

  1212. it's the bounty

  1213. of clean,

  1214. the bounty

  1215. of clean water,

  1216. it's the bounty

  1217. of oil

  1218. or mineral resources

  1219. or the bounty

  1220. of education,

  1221. ability of factories,

  1222. that all of the

  1223. increase in the earth

  1224. comes from the hand

  1225. of the living God

1226. who is the perfect judge

  1227. and the sovereign God

  1228. of every people group.

  1229. And the prayer

  1230. of our hearts

  1231. should be

  1232. that God

  1233. forces grace upon us

1234. and that as he blesses us

  1235. and as we have

1236. a hundred of his face

  1237. to shine upon us

  1238. so that God's way

1239. is known upon the earth,

  1240. is taking power

  1241. to all people groups,

1242. that the result of it

  1243. is not just

1244. that people will praise him,

  1245. that they will know

  1246. that he is

  1247. the creator

  1248. and sustainer

  1249. and gift,

  1250. gift giver

  1251. of all blessing,

  1252. that he is

  1253. a perfectly just judge,

  1254. that he is

  1255. the sovereign

  1256. five nations,

1257. but that we will know

  1258. him truly

  1259. that the theory

  1260. God is.

  1261. God shall bless us

  1262. that all beings

  1263. and fear

  1264. that every human,

  1265. that the people

  1266. and every people

  1267. group will know

  1268. God

  1269. in humility,

  1270. no arrogance,

  1271. no panic,

  1272. no presumption,

  1273. no confusion

  1274. between who God is

  1275. and who I am,

  1276. no attempt

  1277. from within me

1278. to think that I am God

1279. and that God is not God,

  1280. that God is dead

  1281. and he somehow

  1282. gave me the job,

1283. to think that my desires

  1284. and his desires

1285. and what will make me

  1286. prosper will be

  1287. what made God prosperous,

1288. that the fear of God

  1289. is an ever-increasing

1290. knowledge of who I am

  1291. and who God is

1292. and that God is God

1293. and that I am not man,

  1294. I know the boundary

  1295. between me

  1296. and the boundary

  1297. between him

  1298. and knowing the boundary

  1299. between him

  1300. and the boundary

  1301. between me,

1302. I desire to know him

1303. and as I know him

  1304. to bow my knee

  1305. forth

  1306. because he is God,

1307. that's what the fear of God

  1308. is.

1309. And that's what the song

  1310. that has been us

  1311. to pray about.

  1312. Not that we know

  1313. liturgies,

  1314. not that we know

  1315. rituals,

  1316. not that we know

  1317. praise songs,

  1318. but that we know

  1319. God

  1320. and are known

  1321. by him

1322. and that as we know

  1323. God who is invisible,

  1324. we do not confuse

  1325. ourselves with God

  1326. but have this

  1327. ever-sharpened,

  1328. ever-deepening

  1329. understanding

  1330. of the difference

  1331. between him

  1332. and me,

  1333. that that difference

  1334. is good

  1335. and the cat-differs

  1336. should lead

  1337. both humility

  1338. and hunger,

  1339. hunger from word God

  1340. and humility

  1341. before him,

  1342. I know that I am not

  1343. God

  1344. and I am not

  1345. praise him.

  1346. One final thing

  1347. about this prayer

  1348. that has

  1349. addressed this week,

  1350. may God be gracious

  1351. to us,

  1352. bless us

  1353. and make the space

  1354. to shine upon us,

  1355. that your way

  1356. may be known

  1357. on earth

  1358. for saving power

  1359. among all nations,

  1360. but the people's

  1361. praise you,

  1362. O God,

  1363. that all the people's

  1364. praise you,

  1365. that the nations

  1366. be glad and sing

  1367. for joy,

  1368. that you judge

  1369. for the peoples

  1370. with equity

  1371. and guide the nations

  1372. upon earth,

  1373. let the people's

  1374. praise you,

  1375. O God,

  1376. that all the people's

  1377. praise you,

  1378. the earth is yielded

  1379. and it's increased,

  1380. God, our God,

  1381. shall bless us,

  1382. God shall bless us,

  1383. let all the ends

  1384. of the earth

  1385. fear him.

  1386. That's verse 2,

  1387. you're saving power,

1388. you know what it is

  1389. in Hebrew?

  1390. Yeshua.

  1391. Keep connected to Jesus.

1392. I'm not making this up.

  1393. It could be translated

  1394. your Jesus

  1395. among all nations.

  1396. This song is written

  1397. before Jesus.

  1398. It's a promise

  1399. that God will send

  1400. in saving power.

  1401. And the very,

  1402. very part of

  1403. Christian faith

  1404. is that God

  1405. gives power

  1406. of only

  1407. need to give

  1408. and gives

  1409. the power

  1410. of the same

  1411. and it comes

  1412. from Jesus'

  1413. death

  1414. on the cross.

  1415. It's great.

  1416. Jesus.

  1417. The Bible uses

  1418. many different

  1419. images

  1420. and metaphors

1421. to try to help us

  1422. understand images

  1423. of ransom,

  1424. images of forgiveness

  1425. and images

  1426. of proficiation

  1427. and images

  1428. of cleanliness

  1429. and images

  1430. of reconciliation

  1431. and images

  1432. of prosperity,

  1433. images of

  1434. deliverance

  1435. from duty

  1436. and many,

  1437. many images

  1438. all the time.

  1439. But in all

  1440. centers around

  1441. this idea

  1442. that

  1443. Jesus

  1444. is the one

  1445. who comes

  1446. to God

  1447. whose death

  1448. on the cross

  1449. is a saving

  1450. power.

  1451. And I don't

  1452. add to that

  1453. saving power.

  1454. I don't create

  1455. that saving power.

  1456. All I can do

  1457. is receive

  1458. a power.

  1459. Receive something

  1460. that comes

  1461. from God

  1462. that when I receive

  1463. it is actually

  1464. a power

  1465. from God,

  1466. a power

  1467. that reconciles

  1468. me to.

  1469. See,

  1470. even as this

  1471. song was written,

  1472. even as it's

  1473. calling us,

  1474. it's not

  1475. calling us

  1476. to religion.

  1477. This song

  1478. is calling me

  1479. to religion.

  1480. This song

  1481. is calling me

  1482. just to my

  1483. own efforts.

  1484. It's not calling

  1485. me to develop

  1486. mental habits

  1487. whereby I,

  1488. by myself,

  1489. just always

  1490. remember that

  1491. everything is a

  1492. blessing and that

  1493. God is ultimately

  1494. the giver of all

  1495. the blessing and

  1496. that God is the

  1497. one who gives

  1498. you grace and

  1499. kindness.

  1500. That's what

  1501. religion is.

  1502. That's religion

  1503. and spirituality

  1504. is just where

  1505. it's all somehow

  1506. about now me.

  1507. Religion takes

  1508. songs like this

  1509. and turns it

  1510. into being all

  1511. about me

  1512. and my

  1513. accomplishment.

  1514. And this

  1515. song,

  1516. it,

  1517. you know,

  1518. use modern

  1519. language,

  1520. it deconstructs

  1521. it.

  1522. On one hand,

  1523. it's teaching me

  1524. how to pray

  1525. at the same time

  1526. that it's

  1527. pumping me

  1528. for knowledge.

  1529. That just as I

  1530. am praying

  1531. that God's

  1532. saving power

  1533. will be more

  1534. among the

  1535. nations.

  1536. If I need to

  1537. receive that

  1538. saving power,

  1539. it's never just

  1540. my accomplishments

  1541. that I need to

  1542. receive something

  1543. that only God

  1544. can do and

  1545. only God has

  1546. done,

  1547. and that

  1548. is something

  1549. that's a

  1550. saving power.

  1551. It's that the

  1552. point of God

  1553. saying,

  1554. I need to

  1555. receive it.

  1556. I need to

  1557. show blessing.

  1558. It's a

  1559. gospel.

  1560. I realize

  1561. that that's

  1562. why I need

  1563. grace all.

  1564. That's why I

  1565. need to know

  1566. that you need

  1567. grace all.

  1568. I'm going to

  1569. be show

  1570. grace.

  1571. And that's

  1572. not really

  1573. what,

  1574. and that

  1575. saving power

  1576. that grips

  1577. me,

  1578. and I realize

  1579. that's a

  1580. blessing that

  1581. comes from

  1582. God.

  1583. And if I

  1584. am completely

  1585. not dependent

  1586. upon the

  1587. blessing that

  1588. comes from

  1589. God,

  1590. it's a

  1591. saving power,

  1592. I need to

  1593. show blessing.

  1594. And that

  1595. saving power

  1596. that comes

  1597. from God

  1598. is the

  1599. means by

  1600. which I'm

  1601. reconciling

  1602. to God,

  1603. so that I

  1604. am no longer

  1605. in hostility

  1606. against God,

  1607. in anger

  1608. against God,

  1609. in rebel

  1610. against God,

  1611. but that

  1612. it's a

  1613. saving power

  1614. that reconciles

  1615. me to God

  1616. so that I

  1617. can stand

  1618. only because

  1619. of that

  1620. saving power

  1621. before the

  1622. smiling face

  1623. of God,

  1624. that I

  1625. believe

  1626. that

  1627. smiling face

  1628. was.

  1629. And as

  1630. the gospel

  1631. grips,

  1632. I

  1633. learn on

  1634. one hand

  1635. that this

  1636. is just

  1637. a prayer

  1638. that I

  1639. need to

  1640. pray,

  1641. but also

  1642. that it's

  1643. not just

  1644. about me

  1645. and my

  1646. power,

  1647. it's about

  1648. the power

  1649. of accomplishment.

  1650. So the

  1651. psalm

  1652. constantly

  1653. brings us

  1654. back to

  1655. the beginning.

  1656. May God

  1657. be gracious

  1658. to us

  1659. and bless

  1660. us,

  1661. and make

  1662. his face

  1663. to shine

  1664. upon us.

  1665. Why,

  1666. Father,

  1667. we ask

  1668. this,

  1669. we ask

  1670. this,

  1671. that your

  1672. way may be

  1673. known on

  1674. our earth.

  1675. We ask

  1676. this so

  1677. that your

  1678. saving power

  1679. might be

  1680. known among

  1681. every people

  1682. here.

  1683. We ask

  1684. this so

  1685. that all

  1686. the peoples

  1687. will praise

  1688. you,

  1689. God.

  1690. We ask

  1691. this so

  1692. that all

  1693. the peoples

  1694. will praise

  1695. you.

  1696. That's

  1697. Father,

  1698. heal our

  1699. hearts,

  1700. so that

  1701. is our

  1702. desire.

  1703. Heal our

  1704. hearts,

  1705. so that

  1706. is our

  1707. desire.

  1708. Heal our

  1709. minds,

  1710. so that

  1711. is our

  1712. desire.

  1713. That all

  1714. nations will

  1715. have a

  1716. gladness.

  1717. people in

  1718. every people

  1719. group will

  1720. have a

  1721. gladness and

  1722. joy knowing

  1723. that you

  1724. are a

  1725. perfect judge,

  1726. that you

  1727. are a

  1728. sovereign

  1729. God.

  1730. Father,

  1731. we ask

  1732. this so

  1733. that all

  1734. the world

  1735. will know,

  1736. people in

  1737. every people

  1738. group will

  1739. know that

  1740. you are

  1741. the giver

  1742. of all

  1743. the things

  1744. that are

  1745. on earth

  1746. and down

  1747. to you.

  1748. We ask

  1749. you to

  1750. bless us

  1751. so that

  1752. we in

  1753. all the

  1754. earth will

  1755. know you

  1756. as you

  1757. really are.

  1758. We only

  1759. know you

  1760. as you

  1761. really are

  1762. because

  1763. the saving

  1764. power

  1765. will only

  1766. you can

  1767. do.

  1768. That we

  1769. grow more

  1770. and more

  1771. day by

  1772. day more

  1773. than we

  1774. need to

  1775. receive.

  1776. That we

  1777. can never

  1778. hold,

  1779. that we

  1780. can never

  1781. possess,

  1782. that we

  1783. can never

  1784. create,

  1785. that we

  1786. can only

  1787. receive.

  1788. Be

  1789. said.

  1790. Lord,

  1791. please pour

  1792. out your

  1793. grace

  1794. for us

  1795. and bless

  1796. us.

  1797. May your

  1798. face

  1799. always

  1800. shine

  1801. in us.

  1802. Please do

  1803. this in

  1804. us so

  1805. that your

  1806. way will be

  1807. known on

  1808. earth and

  1809. your saving

  1810. power will be

  1811. known among

  1812. every people

  1813. group on

  1814. the planet.

  1815. Lord,

  1816. as your

  1817. grace and

  1818. blessing falls

  1819. upon us,

  1820. heal our

  1821. desires.

  1822. Create in

  1823. us a strong

  1824. desire that

  1825. people from

  1826. every people

  1827. group on

  1828. the planet

  1829. will praise

  1830. you.

  1831. Lord,

  1832. as your

  1833. grace and

  1834. blessing falls

  1835. upon us,

  1836. heal our

  1837. desires so

  1838. that we

  1839. will join

  1840. the people

  1841. from every

  1842. people group

  1843. in singing

  1844. with joy

  1845. that you

  1846. are the

  1847. perfectly

  1848. just

  1849. judge and

  1850. the sovereign

  1851. God for

  1852. any and

  1853. every people

  1854. group that

  1855. calls upon

  1856. us.

  1857. Lord,

  1858. as your

  1859. grace and

  1860. blessing falls

  1861. upon us,

  1862. heal our

  1863. desires and

  1864. heal our

  1865. minds.

  1866. We praise

  1867. you for all

  1868. the ways you

  1869. have blessed

  1870. us and will

  1871. bless us.

  1872. We praise

  1873. you that you

  1874. are the

  1875. blessed one

  1876. who blesses.

  1877. We desire

  1878. to join

  1879. with people

  1880. from every

  1881. people group

  1882. in knowing

  1883. you truly

  1884. with no

  1885. hint of pride

  1886. or presumption

  1887. or arrogance.

  1888. We thank

  1889. you that your

  1890. son Jesus by

  1891. this depth

  1892. upon the

  1893. cross for

  1894. us is that

  1895. promised saving

  1896. power comes

  1897. from your

  1898. home.

  1899. And we

  1900. receive as
