  1. Matthew chapter 3.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  2. In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the desert of Judea,

  3. and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.

  4. This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah,

  5. a voice of one calling in the desert,

  6. Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.

  7. John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist.

  8. His food was locusts and wild honey.

  9. People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea,

  10. and the whole region of the Jordan.

  11. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

  12. But when they saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come into where he was baptizing,

  13. he said to them, You brood of vipers,

  14. who warned you to flee from the coming wrath,

  15. produce fruit in keeping with repentance.

  16. And do not think that you can say to yourselves,

  17. We have Abraham as our father.

  18. I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

  19. The axe is already at the root of the trees,

  20. and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

  21. I baptize you with water for repentance.

  22. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I,

  23. whose sandals I am not fit to carry.

  24. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

  25. His winnowing fork is in his hand,

  26. and he will clear his threshing floor,

  27. gathering his wheat into the barn

  28. and burning the chaff of unquenchable fire.

  29. Then Jesus came into Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.

  30. But John tried to deter him, saying,

  31. I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?

  32. Jesus replied, Let it be so now.

  33. It is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.

  34. Then John consented.

  35. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.

  36. At that moment, heaven was opened,

  37. and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.

  38. And a voice from heaven said,

  39. This is my Son, whom I love.

  40. With him I am well pleased.

  41. May God bless his word.

  42. I was recently feeling very ambitious in my reading,

  43. and I decided that I would read a Russian novel by Dostoevsky,

  44. the Brothers Karamazov.

  45. It's a massive brick of a book.

  46. The reason I decided I would read it,

  47. there's a very famous statement that comes from it,

  48. that if there is no God, everything is permissible.

  49. Maybe some of you have heard that.

  50. It comes up, Christians often quote it.

  51. If you've done the Christianity Explorer course,

  52. I think, for example, it comes up there.

  53. The point, obviously, is that we know that everything is not permissible,

  54. and that's evidence that we recognize on one level that actually there is a God.

  55. I decided I would read this book.

  56. I said I finished it recently.

  57. I won't tell you when I started reading it,

  58. because that would be embarrassing.

  59. It was very long and complex.

  60. One of the things that made it difficult was that being a Russian novelist,

  61. obviously, Dostoevsky would frequently make allusion to other Russian works,

  62. which we wouldn't know anything about.

  63. The editors would put footnotes at the back to explain that,

  64. so that wasn't so bad.

  65. Dostoevsky had obviously also read Shakespeare,

  66. and at points he would make reference to that,

  67. and my knowledge of Shakespeare, embarrassingly, isn't that good either.

  68. But there were no references for that,

  69. because the editors obviously felt that we ought to already know that.

  70. It was a very complex book to read,

  71. and part of the reason is because he assumed so much.

  72. He was assuming an awareness of other literature to understand what he was saying.

  73. And sometimes, as we read the New Testament, it's a little bit like that.

  74. The New Testament is written in light of the Old Testament,

  75. and very often the authors, to a greater or lesser extent,

  76. will assume a knowledge of the Old Testament.

  77. Well, this morning I would like us to look at Matthew 3, verse 17.

    Matthew 3:17

  78. This is my son.

  79. That was the father's statement about Jesus

  80. when he was being baptized by John the Baptist.

  81. I would suggest that in order, many people suggest it,

  82. in order to understand that,

  83. there are several passages in the Old Testament

  84. that are being referred to.

  85. So I'd like us to look at those passages.

  86. There are three of them.

  87. Now, don't worry.

  88. You may feel like you're going to be getting three sermons

  89. for the price of one.

  90. Don't worry.

  91. We won't look in great detail at those passages.

  92. But just briefly looking at them,

  93. seeking to understand what they tell us

  94. about what it means for Jesus to be the Son of God.

  95. Now, hopefully, if I've done this right,

  96. yes, there they are.

  97. So the passages will appear in the screens there behind me.

  98. So the first one is in Isaiah 42.

  99. It's actually the passage that we read earlier.

  100. Now, Matthew 3, verse 17,

    Matthew 3:17

  101. we have the voice from heaven saying,

  102. this is my Son whom I love.

  103. With him I am well pleased.

  104. And in Isaiah 42, we read God saying about Israel,

  105. this is my, well, God saying about his servant, sorry.

  106. Here is my servant whom I uphold,

  107. my chosen one in whom I delight.

  108. I will put my spirit on him,

  109. and he will bring justice to the nations.

  110. Now, the parts that are particularly similar,

  111. I've put in bold in both of those places.

  112. Now, you will have noticed, very obviously,

  113. that the one thing that's missing in Isaiah 42

  114. is the word Son, isn't it?

  115. And nevertheless, we read this language of being well pleased.

  116. God said about the servant that he was going to send

  117. that he was well pleased in him.

  118. When Jesus was baptized,

  119. he said that he was his Son in whom he was well pleased.

  120. This does seem to be the passage

  121. that the Father is alluding to in what he says.

  122. Also, notice what happened in verse 16 of Matthew's Gospel.

  123. What happened to Jesus as this was going on?

  124. At that moment, heaven was opened,

  125. and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove

  126. and lighting on him.

  127. Notice what God says in Isaiah 42.

  128. Here is my servant whom I uphold,

  129. my chosen one in whom I delight.

  130. I will put my Spirit on him.

  131. The language and the events that are being recorded

  132. in Matthew chapter 3

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  133. call to mind Isaiah 42.

  134. This passage is one of those passages

  135. that enables us to understand what it is

  136. that Jesus is the Son of God

  137. in whom the Father is well pleased.

  138. Something that's helpful for us

  139. to fully appreciate this passage

  140. is that many Jews in Jesus' day

  141. thought that when this figure came,

  142. when this promised king came,

  143. he would come just for Israel,

  144. just for people who are physically descended

  145. from Abraham.

  146. And that was true in Isaiah's day.

  147. As they looked forward to what God was going to do,

  148. they thought that God was going to do it

  149. just for them

  150. and not for other nations.

  151. Now,

  152. we can sympathize with that kind of attitude,

  153. excluding people, that is,

  154. because we often do that, don't we,

  155. if we're honest.

  156. It's easy for us to compartmentalize people,

  157. to think that there are some people

  158. who might be interested in Christianity

  159. and other people who just wouldn't be interested.

  160. And perhaps we write them all.

  161. We may make these decisions based on interest.

  162. We may think that Christianity

  163. is just for people from a certain class.

  164. There was a story that illustrates this.

  165. When I was at the Free Church College,

  166. one of our professors told us a story,

  167. a true story.

  168. He can tell you afterwards

  169. if I've gotten the details wrong.

  170. I think I've gotten most of the details correct.

  171. In the 19th century,

  172. there was a minister named John Eady.

  173. He was a very well-known minister and theologian.

  174. He was minister of a church in Glasgow,

  175. and the church was on Cambridge Street.

  176. If it's the same Cambridge Street that's still there,

  177. I think it's been redeveloped.

  178. But in his day,

  179. it was a very poor part of the town.

  180. He was minister of a church there.

  181. He was a very well-known preacher,

  182. and things were going well.

  183. The church was growing and thriving,

  184. so much so that it was decided

  185. to build a new church building.

  186. I'm not sure.

  187. I suspect they were given a gift of money

  188. to build the church.

  189. But this building wasn't in the poor part of town.

  190. It was in the rich part of town,

  191. here, Calvin Bridge.

  192. And when the church was dedicated,

  193. when it was opened,

  194. there was a poem.

  195. It was an unofficial poem that was written.

  196. I think it may have been fixed on the door,

  197. but I'm not sure.

  198. But the poem says,

  199. about the new church building,

  200. that this church is not built for the poor and needy,

  201. but for the rich and Dr. Eady.

  202. The rich may come in and take their seat,

  203. but the poor must go to Cambridge Street.

  204. So there was a perception, at least,

  205. that poor people were being excluded.

  206. They didn't really count.

  207. Now, we can laugh at that,

  208. but as God's people,

  209. we have often done that.

  210. We have often excluded people.

  211. But notice the language that we read in Isaiah 42.

  212. Here is my servant whom I uphold,

  213. my chosen one in whom I delight.

  214. I will put my spirit on him,

  215. and he will bring justice to whom?

  216. To the nations.

  217. To everyone.

  218. In verse four,

  219. he will not falter or be discouraged

  220. till he establishes justice on earth.

  221. In his law,

  222. the islands will put their hope.

  223. Now, in the free church,

  224. for many people,

  225. because of where many folk are from,

  226. the islands can seem like the center of the universe.

  227. But we appreciate that,

  228. obviously, for them,

  229. it was the other way around, wasn't it?

  230. The islands were the furthest corner of the world.

  231. Okay?

  232. This figure who is coming,

  233. whom we know to be Jesus,

  234. he would come for the nations.

  235. He would come for the islands,

  236. for the furthest flung parts of the world.

  237. In verses six and seven,

  238. I, the Lord,

  239. have called you in righteousness.

  240. I will take hold of your hand.

  241. I will keep you,

  242. and will make you to be a covenant for the people,

  243. and a light for the Gentiles,

  244. to open the eyes of the blind,

  245. to free captives from prison,

  246. and to release from the dungeon

  247. those who sit in darkness.

  248. It's a very simple point here,

  249. that if Jesus is the son,

  250. if he is this figure who is spoken about,

  251. then Jesus is for everyone.

  252. Now, in some ways, that's challenging.

  253. It's challenging for you

  254. if you're maybe not yet a Christian.

  255. Maybe you've made it this far,

  256. you're here in church,

  257. but you can't really imagine things

  258. going any further than that.

  259. You can't really imagine yourself

  260. professing to be a Christian,

  261. professing to follow Jesus.

  262. Maybe you think that Christianity

  263. is just not for you.

  264. Jesus would challenge that,

  265. because he is telling us

  266. that he is for everyone.

  267. That's challenging as well

  268. if we are Christians,

  269. because often we can behave in ways

  270. that exclude other people,

  271. whether it's as a congregation,

  272. or whether it's as individuals.

  273. We can behave in such a way

  274. that place obstacles

  275. in front of other people,

  276. that make it unnecessarily difficult

  277. for them to come to faith in Jesus.

  278. Well, again, Jesus is challenging us,

  279. because he's telling us

  280. that he is for everyone,

  281. and he wants everyone

  282. to hear about him

  283. and to come to him.

  284. That means that we need to think

  285. about everything that we do

  286. as Christians,

  287. whether as individuals

  288. or as a congregation.

  289. Are we making it possible

  290. for people to hear

  291. the good news about Jesus?

  292. So this is challenging,

  293. but it's also tremendously encouraging.

  294. Again, if you're not yet a Christian,

  295. or maybe you feel that you're a Christian,

  296. but you struggle in your faith,

  297. read through the Gospels

  298. and try to find any occasion

  299. on which Jesus excluded people.

  300. Whenever Jesus encountered people,

  301. actually, interestingly,

  302. the people that he often seemed

  303. to have the most affinity for

  304. were those who would have seemed

  305. to be the least religious.

  306. Jesus never said to anyone,

  307. I'm sorry,

  308. I can't afford to be seen with you.

  309. Jesus never said to anybody,

  310. no, I'm sorry,

  311. I've given you so many chances

  312. and you've messed up

  313. and I don't really want

  314. to have anything to do with you now.

  315. Jesus never did that.

  316. He accepted everybody

  317. who comes to him.

  318. I think we could say

  319. that all human beings

  320. naturally have a desire

  321. for acceptance.

  322. We want to find acceptance

  323. with one another

  324. and I think that's because

  325. whether we acknowledge it or not,

  326. we seek acceptance

  327. with the God who created us.

  328. The tremendously good news

  329. of the Gospel

  330. is that that acceptance

  331. is offered to you

  332. through Jesus

  333. because he is for everyone.

  334. There should be no one

  335. who is sitting here this morning

  336. thinking to themselves,

  337. Jesus just isn't for me.

  338. So first of all,

  339. if Jesus is the Son,

  340. we see that he is for everyone.

  341. A second point that we see,

  342. and this comes from Psalm 2,

  343. is that if Jesus is the Son,

  344. Jesus is in charge.

  345. We sang earlier in the service

  346. from Psalm 2,

  347. and there we notice

  348. particularly in verse 7,

  349. again, this is up

  350. on the screens for you.

  351. I will proclaim

  352. the decree of the Lord.

  353. He said to me,

  354. you are my son.

  355. Today,

  356. I have become your father.

  357. Again,

  358. this is one of the passages

  359. that the father

  360. is alluding to

  361. at Jesus' baptism.

  362. He says,

  363. you are my son.

  364. This is my son.

  365. And again,

  366. in Psalm 2,

  367. what does it mean

  368. for Jesus to be the Son?

  369. Well,

  370. at the very least,

  371. it means

  372. that Jesus

  373. is in charge.

  374. If we continue

  375. reading through this Psalm,

  376. we see that he tells him,

  377. ask of me,

  378. and I will make

  379. the nations

  380. your inheritance,

  381. the end of the earth

  382. your possession.

  383. Again,

  384. we see this universal

  385. reign of Jesus.

  386. Then we read,

  387. you will rule them

  388. with an iron scepter.

  389. You will dash them

  390. to pieces like pottery.

  391. Therefore,

  392. you kings,

  393. be wise.

  394. Be warned,

  395. you rulers of the earth.

  396. Serve the Lord

  397. with fear

  398. and rejoice

  399. with trembling.

  400. Kiss the Son

  401. lest ye be angry

  402. and ye be destroyed

  403. in your way.

  404. For his wrath

  405. can flare up

  406. in a moment.

  407. Blessed are all those

  408. who take refuge

  409. in him.

  410. Notice particularly

  411. verse nine.

  412. You will rule them

  413. with an iron scepter.

  414. You will dash them

  415. to pieces like pottery.

  416. Now,

  417. we could easily

  418. misunderstand that.

  419. We could think

  420. this language

  421. is smashing them

  422. like pottery,

  423. that Jesus

  424. is someone

  425. who's given

  426. to wanton destruction,

  427. a bit like

  428. the children's talk,

  429. that Jesus

  430. is presented here

  431. as someone

  432. who's simply

  433. dangerous

  434. and violent.

  435. We need to bear

  436. in mind

  437. that those people

  438. who are at risk

  439. from him

  440. are his enemies.

  441. Those who reject them.

  442. They're the ones

  443. who are smashed.

  444. Now,

  445. we shouldn't think

  446. that this means

  447. that Jesus

  448. is somehow

  449. given to wanton

  450. destruction,

  451. but it does mean

  452. that Jesus

  453. is not to be trifled with.

  454. It's another book

  455. that I read

  456. recently about

  457. a journalist

  458. who had covered

  459. the war,

  460. the civil war

  461. in Yugoslavia

  462. in the 1990s.

  463. And on the anniversary

  464. of that,

  465. it was 2014,

  466. I think,

  467. tied in as well

  468. with anniversaries

  469. relating to

  470. the First World War,

  471. he went back

  472. to that part

  473. of the country

  474. and he decided

  475. that he would follow

  476. the route

  477. that Gavrilo Princip

  478. took in 1914.

  479. Now,

  480. because of the conflict

  481. that had happened

  482. in the last century

  483. in the 1990s,

  484. there are still landmines

  485. all over that country.

  486. And so he got

  487. a local guide,

  488. someone that he'd known

  489. actually when he had

  490. been there before.

  491. And the guide

  492. had the maps

  493. and the guide

  494. could read the language

  495. and he knew

  496. where the minefields were

  497. and he could guide him.

  498. Now,

  499. the journalist

  500. had a choice.

  501. He could either say,

  502. who do you think

  503. you are?

  504. Who do you think

  505. you are to tell me

  506. where I should go?

  507. Well,

  508. that would have been

  509. suicidal,

  510. wouldn't it?

  511. Because if he wandered

  512. off the wrong way,

  513. it would have led

  514. to his destruction.

  515. Alternatively,

  516. he could listen to him

  517. and he would guide him

  518. on the safe path.

  519. Maybe that's a little bit

  520. of an illustration

  521. of who Jesus is.

  522. Jesus claims

  523. that he is in charge.

  524. He is the son of God.

  525. He has the authority

  526. to direct us

  527. how we should live.

  528. And we have a choice

  529. to make.

  530. Either we could say,

  531. who do you think

  532. you are

  533. to tell me

  534. how to live?

  535. Or,

  536. we could follow him.

  537. Now,

  538. I suspect

  539. this is one of the things

  540. that puts many people

  541. off of Christianity

  542. because they don't

  543. want someone

  544. who's going to tell them

  545. how to live.

  546. But as we think

  547. of that,

  548. we should notice,

  549. for example,

  550. in Psalm 2,

  551. in verse 11,

  552. serve the Lord

  553. with fear

  554. and rejoice

  555. with trembling.

  556. As we follow Jesus,

  557. we're meant to rejoice

  558. in who he is

  559. and what he has done

  560. for us.

  561. We might also think

  562. of the language

  563. that Jesus himself

  564. uses

  565. later on

  566. in Matthew's gospel.

  567. In Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  568. Come to me,

  569. all you who are weary

  570. and burdened,

  571. and I will give you rest.

  572. Take my yoke upon you

  573. and learn from me,

  574. for I am gentle

  575. and humble in heart,

  576. and you will find rest

  577. for your souls.

  578. For my yoke is easy

  579. and my burden

  580. is light.

  581. Now,

  582. see there

  583. that Jesus

  584. again claims

  585. that he is the one

  586. who is in control,

  587. he is in charge,

  588. he is the one

  589. who claims the authority

  590. to tell you

  591. how you should live.

  592. But that's not

  593. an onerous,

  594. terrible thing.

  595. Jesus says

  596. that that is actually

  597. the path of true freedom

  598. in following him.

  599. So if Jesus is the son,

  600. it means that he is

  601. for everyone.

  602. If Jesus is the son,

  603. it means also

  604. that he is in charge.

  605. Then finally,

  606. if Jesus is in charge,

  607. sorry,

  608. if Jesus is the son,

  609. it means that he is

  610. the one who brings

  611. salvation.

  612. And through him,

  613. we come to recognize,

  614. in fact,

  615. how precious

  616. and how costly

  617. our salvation is.

  618. The third passage

  619. that we would look at

  620. is in Genesis

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  621. chapter 22.

  622. God had called out

  623. to Abraham,

  624. Abraham,

  625. and then in verse 2

  626. he says,

  627. take your son,

  628. your only son,

  629. Isaac,

  630. whom you love.

  631. Now again,

  632. when Jesus,

  633. when the father

  634. says to Jesus,

  635. this is my son

  636. whom I love,

  637. he's clearly echoing

  638. the language

  639. of Genesis

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  640. chapter 22.

  641. But this passage

  642. in Genesis 22

  643. is perhaps

  644. the most difficult

  645. passage of the ones

  646. we've looked at,

  647. partly because salvation

  648. is hard for us.

  649. It can be difficult

  650. for us to acknowledge

  651. that we need

  652. to be saved,

  653. but also simply

  654. because this passage

  655. is difficult.

  656. Notice what we read here.

  657. Take your son,

  658. your only son,

  659. Isaac,

  660. whom you love,

  661. and go to the region

  662. of Moriah.

  663. We know,

  664. interestingly,

  665. interestingly enough

  666. that that is the temple.

  667. It's the area

  668. where the temple

  669. would be built

  670. in Jerusalem.

  671. That's where Moriah was.

  672. That's where Abraham

  673. was called to go.

  674. But notice what God

  675. tells him to do.

  676. Sacrifice him there

  677. as a burnt offering

  678. on one of the mountains

  679. that I will tell you about.

  680. We read that

  681. and we tremble.

  682. It is God

  683. commanding Abraham

  684. to offer his son

  685. as a sacrifice.

  686. Our society,

  687. understandably,

  688. has a profound fear

  689. of religious fanaticism.

  690. And a religion

  691. that would lead you

  692. to sacrifice

  693. your own child

  694. would be the very worst

  695. possible kind

  696. of fanaticism.

  697. And so we find

  698. this passage

  699. very troubling

  700. and we wonder

  701. what on earth

  702. is going on here.

  703. we should appreciate

  704. that we are not

  705. the first people

  706. to find this passage

  707. troubling.

  708. The people of Israel

  709. for whom this book

  710. was written,

  711. they would have been

  712. troubled by this,

  713. not least because

  714. their God himself

  715. had told them

  716. that they mustn't

  717. ever worship him

  718. in this way.

  719. He pointed out

  720. that that's the way

  721. the nations around them

  722. worshiped their gods,

  723. but he said

  724. that that was an abomination

  725. and that they must

  726. not do that,

  727. that it was a very

  728. great evil.

  729. And yet we come

  730. to this passage

  731. and it would appear

  732. that that is what

  733. God is telling

  734. Abraham to do.

  735. Now as it happens,

  736. as we read through

  737. Genesis 22,

  738. it makes it clear

  739. that that is not

  740. ultimately

  741. what God intended.

  742. Some people commenting

  743. on this passage

  744. have pointed out

  745. that in Abraham's society,

  746. child sacrifice

  747. is as horrific

  748. as it is to us

  749. in their cultures

  750. wouldn't have been

  751. that surprising.

  752. So the thing for them

  753. that would have been

  754. surprising wasn't so much

  755. that a God might ask

  756. for that,

  757. but that in fact

  758. that a God would say

  759. no, stop that.

  760. That is what is surprising.

  761. And then consistently

  762. from this point onward

  763. in the Old Testament,

  764. God says,

  765. you must not ever

  766. do this.

  767. And so what is the point?

  768. Why is it that God

  769. speaks to Abraham

  770. in this way?

  771. So we come to Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  772. chapter 3,

  773. I would suggest

  774. that we see at least

  775. one profound lesson

  776. that is being taught here.

  777. God in Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3:17

  778. verse 17,

  779. is echoing the language

  780. of this passage

  781. and he is using it

  782. to describe his own son,

  783. his beloved son.

  784. As we think about

  785. what that means,

  786. I think it's helpful

  787. for us to call to mind

  788. two things

  789. that I mentioned previously.

  790. one thing,

  791. I suggested

  792. that everybody

  793. seeks acceptance.

  794. We seek acceptance

  795. with other people.

  796. Ultimately,

  797. we seek acceptance

  798. with God.

  799. And when Christians

  800. speak about salvation,

  801. that's one of the ways

  802. you could understand salvation.

  803. It means to be accepted

  804. by God,

  805. to know that he loves you,

  806. to know that he's

  807. forgiven your sins.

  808. acceptance.

  809. So,

  810. we all seek acceptance.

  811. The other thing

  812. that I mentioned

  813. was that quote

  814. from Dostoevsky,

  815. that if there is no God,

  816. anything is permissible.

  817. But of course,

  818. the whole point of that

  819. is that not everything

  820. is permissible

  821. because there is a God.

  822. And that God

  823. who exists

  824. is judge.

  825. He is the one

  826. to whom all people

  827. are accountable.

  828. and he is a just judge.

  829. If you think

  830. of human judges,

  831. you can get just judges,

  832. you can get corrupt judges.

  833. A just judge

  834. will not condemn

  835. the innocent.

  836. He will not justify

  837. the wicked.

  838. A crooked judge

  839. would simply

  840. let the guilty

  841. walk free.

  842. That's not

  843. the kind of judge

  844. that God is.

  845. But then you begin

  846. to see perhaps

  847. that there is

  848. a tension

  849. between those two things

  850. that I've mentioned.

  851. Our desire

  852. for acceptance

  853. with God

  854. and the fact

  855. that God

  856. is a just judge.

  857. We tend

  858. to think

  859. that our salvation

  860. is easy for God.

  861. I think if we're honest,

  862. we tend to view salvation

  863. almost as something

  864. that God owes us.

  865. to be a good

  866. God

  867. but what if we've

  868. sinned?

  869. What if we have

  870. done wicked things?

  871. It's easy for us

  872. to think of other people

  873. whom we reckon

  874. to be bad people

  875. but what if we're

  876. the problem?

  877. What if we are

  878. the bad people?

  879. Then how is it

  880. that we can find

  881. acceptance

  882. with a God

  883. who is perfectly just?

  884. So you see,

  885. for God to save us

  886. is not in fact

  887. an easy thing.

  888. Had God simply said,

  889. well yes,

  890. you've sinned,

  891. yes,

  892. you've done horrible things

  893. but let's just forget

  894. about that.

  895. Had God done that,

  896. he wouldn't be just.

  897. In order for God

  898. to be just

  899. and the God

  900. who saves us,

  901. he himself

  902. needed to satisfy

  903. his justice

  904. and we get a glimpse

  905. of that here.

  906. Remember where

  907. Abraham was

  908. as he was traveling

  909. along with

  910. his beloved son.

  911. He was traveling

  912. to Moriah.

  913. He was traveling

  914. to the place

  915. that would ultimately

  916. be Jerusalem

  917. and as he was traveling

  918. there,

  919. he was going

  920. to the place

  921. where he thought

  922. that he was going

  923. to have to sacrifice

  924. his beloved son

  925. and you can't read

  926. Genesis 22

  927. without your heart

  928. being moved.

  929. It's a fearful passage

  930. and yet ultimately

  931. at the last moment

  932. there was that voice

  933. that cried out

  934. staying Abraham's hand

  935. and stopping that.

  936. He didn't sacrifice

  937. his son.

  938. But here in Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  939. chapter 3

  940. we find the reality.

  941. Here we have

  942. our heavenly father

  943. and his beloved son

  944. and in a few short years

  945. they will be traveling

  946. together to Jerusalem.

  947. Except this time

  948. there will be no stain

  949. of the sacrifices

  950. to be made.

  951. The son will be

  952. sacrificed upon the cross.

  953. And why is it

  954. that that happened?

  955. Why would God

  956. do that to his beloved son?

  957. Well he did it for us.

  958. For God so loved the world

  959. that he gave

  960. his one and only son

  961. that whoever believes

  962. in him

  963. might not perish

  964. but have everlasting life.

  965. And as you've begun

  966. to understand that

  967. as you see Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  968. chapter 3

  969. and the whole of Matthew's

  970. gospel

  971. in light of Genesis 22

  972. we read about

  973. this relationship

  974. of a father

  975. and his beloved son

  976. and our hearts

  977. are torn

  978. as we think

  979. of what Abraham

  980. must have gone through.

  981. God is revealing

  982. to us

  983. that that is

  984. how much he loved us.

  985. in spite of your sin

  986. he loved you

  987. so much

  988. that he was willing

  989. to give his son

  990. that Jesus

  991. would endure

  992. what we deserve

  993. that our sins

  994. might be forgiven.

  995. God didn't simply say

  996. we'll just forget

  997. about your sin

  998. your sin doesn't matter.

  999. He paid the price

  1000. himself

1001. so that he is just

  1002. and also

1003. the one who accepts you

  1004. and loves you

  1005. and forgives you.

  1006. and that's the thing

  1007. that transforms

  1008. everything else

  1009. that we've looked at

  1010. doesn't it?

  1011. Why does it make

  1012. any difference

  1013. that Jesus

  1014. is for everybody?

  1015. Why should you care

1016. if Jesus is for you?

  1017. Because Jesus

  1018. is the one

  1019. who loved you

  1020. and gave his life

  1021. for you

  1022. that through him

  1023. you might be forgiven.

  1024. Why should we

1025. give our lives to him?

  1026. Why should we

  1027. recognize that he

  1028. is in charge

  1029. of our lives?

  1030. Why should we

  1031. willingly accept

  1032. his direction

  1033. in our lives?

  1034. Well again

  1035. because he loved you

  1036. so much

  1037. that he gave himself

  1038. for you.

  1039. What does it mean

  1040. for Jesus

1041. to be the son of God?

1042. As we think of that

  1043. we see lastly

  1044. that it means

  1045. that Jesus

  1046. is the one

  1047. who brings salvation.

  1048. Not only does he

  1049. bring salvation

  1050. but we come

  1051. to understand

  1052. through him

  1053. how much

  1054. that salvation

  1055. caused.

  1056. Christ.

  1057. So as we think

  1058. about what it means

  1059. for Jesus

  1060. to be the son

  1061. of God

  1062. if Jesus

  1063. is the son

  1064. it means

  1065. that he is

  1066. for everyone.

  1067. Because Jesus

  1068. is the son

  1069. of God

  1070. it means

  1071. that he

  1072. is in charge.

  1073. And because

  1074. he is the son

  1075. of God

  1076. it means

  1077. that he

  1078. is the one

  1079. who brings

  1080. us salvation.

  1081. to be the son

  1082. of God

  1083. to be the son

  1084. of God

  1085. is in charge.

  1086. Of course

  1087. of God

  1088. we see

  1089. Th так

  1090. are other

  1091. who Ми

  1092. are other

  1093. people

  1094. who Pelosi

  1095. are

  1096. trying

  1097. to other

  1098. who
