  1. Father, we especially ask today, given what your word has said,

  2. we especially ask today that you would be kind to us and merciful to us

  3. and pour out your Holy Spirit upon us so that we might hear what your Son teaches,

  4. that we might hear what he teaches, and that we might keep what he teaches.

  5. Father, may your Holy Spirit bring the words of Scripture deeply into our lives

  6. so that we will be disciples gripped by the Gospel living for your glory.

  7. And this we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  8. Please be seated.

  9. Every fourth week I speak on CFRA radio at 6.30 in the morning.

  10. I do the taping on a Tuesday morning a couple of weeks in advance.

  11. I think I'm on next week.

  12. I can't remember when I'm on.

  13. I sort of always lose track of when I'm on.

  14. Anyway, I'm part of a team of four different people who all take turns speaking.

  15. And a fellow who's part of the committee that runs and the team that runs the whole thing, a layperson,

  16. he very helpfully provided for the four speakers just recently a list of things,

  17. like a survey of things that 20-somethings are interested in when it comes to the Bible

  18. and it comes to religion and the Christian faith and just life in general.

  19. And it very helpfully provided the four speakers with a list.

  20. And I just want to let you know that what we're talking about today is not on the list.

  21. It didn't show up on the list at all.

  22. Because I guess 20-somethings aren't really interested in talking about hardcore demonic possession,

  23. which is what we're going to talk about.

  24. So if you have your Bibles, please open them to Luke chapter 11, verses 14 and following.

    Luke 11:14

  25. And if you don't have a Bible with you, there's always some Bibles here at the front of the church,

  26. which you're welcome to use.

  27. And if you want, you can keep it afterwards.

  28. Take it home as a gift from us.

  29. And it's Luke chapter 11, verse 14.

    Luke 11:14

  30. And here's how it goes.

  31. Now, Jesus was casting out a demon that was mute.

  32. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke and the people marveled.

  33. Now, just sort of pause.

  34. We're going to spend a couple of minutes on this verse.

  35. But this verse, this is just like a bit of a throwaway thing.

  36. Notice how it begins.

  37. It says, now.

  38. Some of you know that I often have conversations in Starbucks or other coffee places

  39. because I usually work on my sermons in Starbucks or places like that.

  40. And so when you have an open Bible, eventually you start to have conversations with people.

  41. And a very regular conversation that I have with people is that the Bible is completely and utterly untrustworthy

  42. because it's filled with contradictions.

  43. That it'll show things out of order.

  44. That if you read Matthew, it'll show things following in one order.

  45. And then you read the book of Luke and it shows things happening in a different order.

  46. And so you can't trust it.

  47. And so this is just a little bit of a throwaway for you.

  48. Part of the reason that we think that is because most people are like me and don't know Greek,

  49. which is the language that the New Testament was written in.

  50. Because I don't know Greek, part of what I do for my preparation for sermon is read things called commentaries

  51. where people know the Greek so I can find out if there's things going on in the original language

  52. which don't get brought out in English.

  53. And in the original language, there's...

  54. So look here at verse 14.

  55. It begins with now, right?

  56. Now he was casting out a demon.

  57. And in English, usually when we read now, we think,

  58. okay, first the things in verses 1 to 13 happened.

  59. And now these things happened.

  60. But the actual word underneath that is really saying something like,

  61. now I want to talk about this.

  62. In other words, it's not making any claim that it's in any particular type of order.

  63. The person writing the gospel basically wants to try to help us to understand who Jesus is.

  64. And so, you know, just like if you were telling somebody a story about a friend or something like that,

  65. you're trying to tell somebody about a friend,

  66. and you might tell them about this really funny incident of what happened to them.

  67. And then that funny incident makes you aware of other types of things that are like it.

  68. And so you tell the person other things like that

  69. because it sort of gives you a bit of a picture of the person.

  70. And then maybe you go back to your story about something that happened after the first event.

  71. And we all understand how that works.

  72. And that's basically how especially Matthew and Luke are written.

  73. So it means that you can't sort of look at Matthew and look at Luke and say,

  74. oh, you know, he has this happening after this and this happening after this,

  75. and it doesn't follow.

  76. Well, no, no, in the original language, it's as if Jesus has just taught us about prayer,

  77. and he's just taught us about the Holy Spirit.

  78. And then Luke says, you know what, now I'd like to talk about this.

  79. And that's what happened.

  80. So look at verse 14 again.

  81. We'll actually get more of my point.

  82. Now, Jesus was casting out a demon that was mute.

  83. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled.

  84. Now, I'm going to try to describe the event fairly clearly.

  85. And I'm aware of the fact that this text is actually highly problematic for social workers,

  86. psychologists, and doctors, and probably others.

  87. It's counselors and therapists.

  88. It's a very, very difficult text.

  89. In fact, of all the verses that I read, basically, we have this very, very tiny, short description of an exorcism,

  90. and then sort of a long comment about it.

  91. And the text is very clear.

  92. Probably what happened is something like this.

  93. People believe that Jesus had the power to heal, and so they bring somebody to Jesus who has been mute.

  94. They're not able to speak, and they haven't been able to speak for quite a while.

  95. And I guess they're expecting Jesus to heal the man.

  96. But Jesus surprises them.

  97. He doesn't heal him.

  98. He looks at him, and he must have said something like,

  99. Demon, be gone.

  100. And because the crowd all recognizes that it's an exorcism.

  101. And when Jesus says, Demon, be gone, the demon leaves.

  102. And maybe people looking at the man who had not thought that he was demon-possessed,

  103. maybe they saw a change in his eyes, or a relaxant of his shoulders,

  104. or some type of physical bodily type of thing.

  105. But the most astounding thing that they saw was that all of a sudden the man was able to speak.

  106. And that's what the Bible is describing as having happened to Jesus.

  107. It's all very, very terse.

  108. Verse 14, now he was casting out a demon that was mute,

  109. and when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled.

  110. It's a public miracle he does in front of many people,

  111. and most of the people are completely and utterly astounded by what has happened.

  112. And, well, here's the point.

  113. So here's the thing.

  114. Here's the very, very, very difficult thing about this text.

  115. If you're a doctor and you're treating somebody who can't speak,

  116. do you suspect that there's a demon there?

  117. If you're a therapist dealing with somebody,

  118. or a social worker dealing with somebody,

  119. in Canada in the year 2014,

  120. what would happen if you went to your supervisor and said,

  121. I don't really think that this is a social problem,

  122. I think that they're possessed by a demon?

  123. And I'm guessing that would be a very awkward conversation

  124. for a social worker with their boss,

  125. or a therapist with her boss or supervisor.

  126. And yet, I'm going to talk a bit more about this

  127. throughout the rest of the sermon,

  128. but, I mean, this is the very, very first thing to notice about the text,

  129. that if this text is true,

  130. it's saying that some of our physical problems and symptoms

  131. can be a sign of demonic possession.

  132. So here's the first point.

  133. I'm going to talk a little bit more,

  134. but, Andrew, if you could put the first point up.

  135. I need to pray for myself and for others

  136. that we will remember God's Word written

  137. and learn how it applies to our jobs and our lives.

  138. The grammar's not really perfect.

  139. I apologize for that.

  140. I'll try to polish it up later on.

  141. But you get the basic point.

  142. I need to pray.

  143. We need to pray.

  144. Christians need to pray.

  145. Congregations need to become a prayerful congregation.

  146. And one of the things that we need to pray about

  147. is that each of us will hear God's Word

  148. and remember God's Word,

  149. and that God's Word will have an impact,

  150. an effect on how we understand our jobs

  151. and how we understand ourselves.

  152. I'm sure that some of you, maybe many of you,

  153. maybe all of you, pray on a regular basis for me,

  154. and I'm very thankful for that.

  155. Please keep praying for me.

  156. I need lots of prayer.

  157. But everybody here,

  158. everybody who's a follower of Jesus needs prayer.

  159. Like, what does a doctor do who's a believing Christian,

  160. who believes that texts like this are possible

  161. when he examines people?

  162. Should he or she be spending some time

  163. praying for spiritual discernment?

  164. How does he wisely handle something like this

  165. in the medical establishment?

  166. Should she, as the doctor,

  167. when she sees something like this,

  168. should she be coming to her church

  169. and saying, you know, I'm facing this situation,

  170. it might just be medical,

  171. but I have a feeling there's something else.

  172. Would you pray for this person?

  173. Like, how does that work?

  174. You can see it's difficult,

  175. but it's not just difficult for doctors

  176. and social workers and stuff like that.

  177. What's it like for a person in financial services

  178. or in sales,

  179. where the boss is completely and utterly consumed with greed,

  180. and you're in financial services or sales

  181. and you're dealing with people who are consumed with greed.

  182. And how do you sort of manage that?

  183. Like, how do you manage if you maybe have a boss

  184. that wants you to always upsell,

  185. even when it's not really good for the client,

  186. and on the other hand,

  187. maybe, you know, if you're doing stocks and bonds

  188. and you realize that what's driving this person

  189. is a really, they worship money,

  190. and how do you deal with that?

  191. You know, like, that requires prayer and wisdom.

  192. And you could multiply examples.

  193. You know, maybe it's not specifically,

  194. maybe if you're in some type of engineering,

  195. there's not a specific technical engineering thing,

  196. but there's always people issues.

  197. There's always control issues.

  198. There's always issues of right and wrong and conscience

  199. and limits and all that you shouldn't go beyond

  200. and dishonesty.

  201. And I'm not saying that the whole world is bleak,

  202. but it's not as if you can live years and years and years,

  203. and you never have to face this in your job or in your life.

  204. And so this text,

  205. by making some very, very shocking claim to Canadians

  206. about physical illness,

  207. might have a spiritual component.

  208. It's really challenging all of us to do two things.

  209. The first is to actually remember God's Word

  210. and know it,

  211. because if you don't know it,

  212. you'd never even know to look or to think about it

  213. or just to ponder it.

  214. And we desperately need to go into the type of congregation

  215. where we pray for each other.

  216. I mean, one of the very powerful things

  217. about going to a men's group or the woman's group

  218. or one of the small groups

  219. is that there's an opportunity to build relationships

  220. where some of the stresses in your life

  221. and in your jobs can be shared,

  222. and that you can have people who pray for you specifically.

  223. It might be hard for us as a congregation to do it,

  224. but as you get to know other men or other women

  225. or youth in the youth group

  226. or in small groups,

  227. it becomes a way by which you can pray for each other

  228. with knowledge and with persistence and check up on it.

  229. Now, some of you might be saying,

  230. okay, George, this is very, very interesting,

  231. and yeah, yeah, yeah, we're going to do this,

  232. but you're spending all this time in the sermon,

  233. and then what are you going to do?

  234. You're going to come up to yourself,

  235. oh, and my time's up.

  236. I guess I can't talk about demons.

  237. Sorry.

  238. And you sort of just bypass the whole thing.

  239. No, we're not going to do that.

  240. Let's look at verse 14 again.

  241. Now Jesus was casting out a demon that was mute.

  242. When the demon had gone out,

  243. the mute man spoke, and the people marveled.

  244. Here's the second thing,

  245. not just about this,

  246. but about the commentary that's going to happen,

  247. because the exorcism is very brief,

  248. but the commentary is long.

  249. Here's the second thing,

  250. if you could put it up, Andrew.

  251. The Bible teaches that demons really exist,

  252. and they will cause real harm,

  253. and they should never be trifled with.

  254. The Bible teaches,

  255. Jesus teaches,

  256. demons really exist,

  257. and they will cause real harm,

  258. and they should never be trifled with.

  259. Now this isn't going to be a sermon

  260. on demonic harassment,

  261. and oppression,

  262. and a whole range of different things.

  263. Many of us might live our entire lives

  264. without ever having to be face-to-face,

  265. or deal with somebody

  266. who's fully demonically possessed.

  267. That might happen here in Canada.

  268. Most of us experience demonic,

  269. it's through most of us in our experience

  270. with being influenced by demons,

  271. it has more to do with a sense of slander against us,

  272. an attack against us,

  273. a self-worth,

  274. a lack of confidence,

  275. the type of things that cause division,

  276. and that's our more common things,

  277. and that would be another sermon.

  278. That's not what the text is talking about.

  279. But even in those, in a sense, lesser cases,

  280. it's still clear that demons exist,

  281. that they cause real harm,

  282. and they're not to be trifled with.

  283. This week,

  284. I don't know if it was in The Citizen,

  285. it was in other papers,

  286. there was a big statue of Satan,

  287. big red statue of Satan that appeared.

  288. I was going to say Granville Road,

  289. but it's the highway in Vancouver.

  290. It doesn't matter,

  291. Grandview, I think it is,

  292. the Grandview Highway in Vancouver,

  293. that you could see it off that.

  294. It was a large red statue of Satan.

  295. He had the horned salute,

  296. and he had a massive erection,

  297. and he was big and red,

  298. and it appeared out of nowhere,

  299. and then it got taken away.

  300. And the newspaper article was about the fact

  301. that many people liked the statue.

  302. Some wanted it to return,

  303. some would like to find out where they could buy it,

  304. and have it in their house.

  305. Or their garden,

  306. or their front yard,

  307. or in their dining room,

  308. I don't know.

  309. But here's the thing,

  310. it was just like a curious newspaper thing,

  311. and in pluralistic Canada,

  312. some people like Satan, that's fine,

  313. some people like Gaia, that's fine,

  314. some people like Krishna,

  315. some people like Buddha,

  316. some people like Muhammad,

  317. some people like Jesus,

  318. some people like Jack Daniels,

  319. and watching NFL football on a Sunday,

  320. and they're just sort of all the same,

  321. and whatever sort of turns your crank,

  322. that's just fine.

  323. And so in pluralistic Canada,

  324. that's just the way it is.

  325. But you see, the Bible here says,

  326. the Bible is teaching that if demons really exist,

  327. and the Bible says that they really exist,

  328. and if they cause real harm,

  329. then they should never be trifled with.

  330. They should never be trifled with.

  331. And as we read the,

  332. I'm not going to just keep reading verse 14

  333. over and over and over again,

  334. not that that would be bad,

  335. I'm not going to just keep reading it.

  336. We'll read more,

  337. and you get more of a picture

  338. of the type of harm that demons cause.

  339. But that's a fundamental takeaway for us,

  340. that it's not to be trifled with.

  341. Some of you might say,

  342. George, are you just trying to kill curiosity,

  343. and create fear,

  344. and stop inquiry?

  345. Well, no, not at all.

  346. I'm well past having really tiny young children.

  347. I have some grandchildren.

  348. I'm not going to bore you all

  349. with cute grandchildren stories.

  350. But, you know, for those of you who are parents,

  351. or those of you who observe parents,

  352. it's a very, very tricky thing with kids.

  353. On one hand,

  354. a wise parent wants to encourage curiosity in their kids.

  355. Right?

  356. If you go and you visit somebody,

  357. and every time the kid's trying to ask a question,

  358. or try to touch something,

  359. the parents are slapping them,

  360. or verbally slapping them down,

  361. and you think to yourself,

  362. that's terrible.

  363. You can't,

  364. you know, that parent's way, way too controlling.

  365. Like, curiosity's good in kids,

  366. and inquiry's good in kids.

  367. And so on one hand,

  368. you want to encourage that with kids.

  369. On the other hand,

  370. there's certain things

  371. that are just fundamentally dangerous,

  372. and you don't want them to do it.

  373. So, for instance,

  374. one of my grandkids,

  375. he's figured out,

  376. he's very, you know, like this,

  377. and he's figured out how to open doors.

  378. And you don't want him opening the door

  379. and going out on the street by himself.

  380. Right?

  381. So, I mean,

  382. that's sort of an obvious type of thing.

  383. And the Bible's trying to say

  384. that it's the same type of thing here.

  385. If you read the Bible from cover to cover,

  386. if you've listened to the sermons,

  387. it's very, very obvious

  388. that Jesus loves questions,

  389. that God is able to handle honest questions.

  390. He wants us to ask questions.

  391. In fact,

  392. I would suggest that probably when we die

  393. and we get to heaven,

  394. God will rebuke us

  395. for not asking enough questions in our lives,

  396. for being far too complacent,

  397. and not, in fact,

  398. asking more and more and more

  399. that too many of us get old.

  400. Like, you know,

  401. somewhere about the time we turn six,

  402. or, you know, or 16,

  403. we stop asking childlike questions,

  404. and the rest of our life

  405. is like a withering, withering, withering,

  406. withering consumption

  407. with just scheming and getting,

  408. and we've stopped wondering.

  409. And I wouldn't be surprised if God says,

  410. why did you stop wondering

  411. and being so curious?

  412. Why didn't you not just say,

  413. even if I live to be 98,

  414. I'm going to be curious.

  415. I'm going to have inquiry.

  416. One of the things we're going to see in this text

  417. is that this text, in fact,

  418. talks a little bit about

  419. what it means to be human.

  420. But at the same time,

  421. just like with kids,

  422. you want to encourage their curiosity,

  423. their inquiry,

  424. their site of experiment.

  425. There's just,

  426. if something's really dangerous,

  427. you also want to say,

  428. no, no.

  429. Okay, Greg,

  430. you just,

  431. you don't go,

  432. you don't open the door

  433. and go exploring

  434. out by yourself.

  435. You're too young.

  436. There's too much danger.

  437. And the Bible here is saying

  438. that demons really exist.

  439. They will cause real harm,

  440. and they should never be trifled with.

  441. So,

  442. but here's the other thing.

  443. So,

  444. Jesus does this miracle,

  445. and you can ask yourself,

  446. well,

  447. how is it that people respond

  448. to this exorcism?

  449. Do they show inquiry?

  450. Are they curious?

  451. Do they say,

  452. gosh,

  453. Jesus,

  454. how do you do that?

  455. Like,

  456. whoa.

  457. Well,

  458. let's see.

  459. Some people go,

  460. whoa,

  461. and other people have

  462. one of two other responses.

  463. It's in verses 15 and following.

  464. But some of them said,

  465. so go back to the very last part

  466. of verse 14,

  467. and the people marveled.

  468. Verse 15,

  469. but some of them said,

  470. Jesus casts out demons

  471. by Beelzebul,

  472. the prince of demons,

  473. while others,

  474. to test him,

  475. kept seeking from him

  476. a sign from heaven.

  477. Just sort of pause there.

  478. Keep your finger there.

  479. Some of these people

  480. have really come right up

  481. in Jesus' face

  482. to really insult him.

  483. Beelzebul was one of the

  484. Jewish names

  485. for the devil.

  486. And the name,

  487. this name for the devil

  488. was created

  489. by taking

  490. an ancient pagan god,

  491. Baal,

  492. an ancient pagan god,

  493. Baal,

  494. and adding the word

  495. for poop

  496. only said

  497. far more foul,

  498. which I can't say

  499. from up front

  500. at church on a Sunday.

  501. And they put

  502. this pagan name

  503. for God

  504. with this word

  505. for excrement

  506. and they call devil

  507. the lord of excrement.

  508. And that's why

  509. in some versions

  510. it's also understood

  511. as the lord of the flies

  512. because excrement

  513. left out

  514. attracts flies.

  515. So in a sense

  516. it was a polite way

  517. to say

  518. lord of,

  519. and fill in

  520. how you may be

  521. on the street

  522. here,

  523. excrement referred to.

  524. And that's what

  525. they say.

  526. Jesus is just

  527. under the power

  528. of the lord of excrement.

  529. I see it right

  530. in front of everybody

  531. to his face.

  532. And others just say,

  533. you know what,

  534. Jesus,

  535. yeah, yeah,

  536. I've seen you

  537. cast out a demon

  538. before,

  539. I got the t-shirt,

  540. got the hat,

  541. got the tattoo,

  542. come on,

  543. show us a real sign

  544. from heaven.

  545. And that we sort of

  546. going to talk about

  547. next week

  548. because Jesus

  549. sort of deals

  550. with that

  551. like later on

  552. in the text.

  553. But now he focuses

  554. on those

  555. who say that

  556. what he's doing

  557. is because he's

  558. under the power

  559. of the devil.

  560. So verse 17,

  561. but Jesus,

  562. knowing their

  563. thoughts,

  564. said to them,

  565. every kingdom

  566. divided against

  567. itself is laid

  568. waste,

  569. and a divided

  570. household falls.

  571. And if Satan

  572. also is divided

  573. against himself,

  574. how will his

  575. kingdom stand?

  576. For you say

  577. that I cast out

  578. demons by Beelzebul.

  579. And if I cast out

  580. demons by Beelzebul,

  581. by whom do your

  582. sons cast them out?

  583. Therefore they will

  584. be your judges.

  585. But if it is

  586. by the finger

  587. of God

  588. that I cast

  589. out demons,

  590. then the kingdom

  591. of God

  592. has come upon

  593. you.

  594. Just sort of

  595. pause here.

  596. We're going to

  597. talk about it

  598. more in a moment.

  599. What we see

  600. in Jesus'

  601. response

  602. is he says,

  603. surely,

  604. I mean,

  605. he's talking

  606. to a different

  607. cultural context

  608. than postmodern

  609. Canada,

  610. whereby many

  611. of them would

  612. accept the

  613. reality of

  614. demons and

  615. have a certain

  616. degree.

  617. Some would be

  618. fascinated and

  619. want the power

  620. that comes from

  621. connection with

  622. them, but many

  623. would be

  624. frightened of

  625. it.

  626. And Jesus

  627. is in a sense

  628. going to say,

  629. I'm dangerous

  630. too.

  631. I'm dangerous

  632. too.

  633. I'm going to

  634. explain it in a

  635. moment, but

  636. just say,

  637. if, verse

  638. 20, but if

  639. it is by the

  640. finger of God

  641. that I cast

  642. out demons,

  643. then the

  644. kingdom of

  645. God has come

  646. upon you.

  647. When a strong

  648. man, fully

  649. armed, guards

  650. his own palace,

  651. his goods are

  652. safe, but when

  653. one's stronger

  654. than he attacks

  655. him and

  656. overcomes him,

  657. he takes away

  658. his armor in

  659. which he trusted

  660. and divides

  661. his spoil.

  662. Whoever is

  663. not with me

  664. is against me,

  665. and whoever

  666. does not gather

  667. with me

  668. scatters.

  669. Now, just

  670. sort of pause

  671. here for a

  672. second.

  673. The finger

  674. of God

  675. is a very,

  676. we don't get

  677. it, and the

  678. early readers

  679. of Luke's

  680. gospel, who

  681. many would

  682. have been

  683. pagans who

  684. become

  685. Christians,

  686. without having

  687. become Jewish

  688. first, they

  689. might not have

  690. got it as

  691. well, but for

  692. those who

  693. were Jewish

  694. who were

  695. listening,

  696. this reference

  697. to Jesus and

  698. the finger of

  699. God would

  700. have been a

  701. very, very

  702. powerful type

  703. of a statement

  704. because two

  705. of the most

  706. famous texts

  707. in the Old

  708. Testament,

  709. there's two

  710. very, very

  711. famous texts

  712. in the Old

  713. Testament about

  714. the finger

  715. of God,

  716. and the

  717. first one

  718. is if you

  719. go back to

  720. the early

  721. books of

  722. the Bible

  723. and you

  724. look at

  725. Exodus and

  726. Deuteronomy,

  727. and as God

  728. brings the

  729. people of

  730. Israel out

  731. of Egypt

  732. and on the

  733. way to the

  734. promised land,

  735. and he's

  736. going to enter

  737. into a

  738. covenant with

  739. them where he

  740. offers, in a

  741. sense, to be

  742. their king

  743. over them,

  744. and he

  745. accepts them

  746. as his

  747. treasured

  748. possession and

  749. his people,

  750. and a key

  751. foundational part

  752. of him being

  753. their king and

  754. them being their

  755. treasured possession

  756. is that he

  757. gives them ten

  758. summary statements

  759. or laws called

  760. the Ten

  761. Commandments,

  762. and that's a

  763. crucial part of

  764. it, and how

  765. is it written?

  766. The Bible says

  767. that Moses takes

  768. stone tablets and

  769. by the finger of

  770. God the

  771. commandments are

  772. written, so

  773. it's pointing

  774. to God's

  775. active presence

  776. in gathering

  777. of people for

  778. himself to be

  779. his treasured

  780. possession, and

  781. in a sense, the

  782. terms of what it

  783. means to belong to

  784. him are actually

  785. written by the

  786. finger of God, and

  787. towards the end of

  788. the Old Testament,

  789. there's a story in

  790. Daniel chapter 5,

    Daniel 5 chapter mention

  791. which also would

  792. have been a very

  793. telling illustration

  794. of this.

  795. You can go back

  796. and read it later,

  797. but basically, in

  798. summary, the people

  799. of Israel are in

  800. captivity by the

  801. Babylonians, and

  802. Belshazzar, who's

  803. the successor of

  804. Nebuchadnezzar, he

  805. decides to throw a

  806. huge party, and he

  807. asks for the

  808. temple, stuff from

  809. the temple of

  810. Israel to come out

  811. so that they could

  812. get drunk with it,

  813. and as they're

  814. doing that, and

  815. they're all having a

  816. great time partying

  817. and praising the

  818. gods of gold and

  819. of bronze and of

  820. stone, in the

  821. midst of it, it

  822. appears as if the

  823. finger of God shows

  824. up and writes on

  825. the wall, many,

  826. many, tickle,

  827. tackle, parson.

  828. And then Daniel's

  829. brought in, and he

  830. interprets it that God

  831. has written that he

  832. has judged the

  833. Babylonians, he's

  834. judged Belshazzar, and

  835. that that night the

  836. kingdom will fall from

  837. the Babylonians and the

  838. Persians will take over

  839. the empire and Belshazzar

  840. will die.

  841. And that's what Jesus is

  842. saying when he says

  843. about the finger of God.

  844. God, he says, okay,

  845. well, you push back,

  846. you think I'm doing

  847. this by satanic power,

  848. and he gives some

  849. reasons why that might

  850. some, you know, some

  851. from what if types of

  852. things, but he says,

  853. but if what you see is

  854. the finger of God, it

  855. means the kingdom of God

  856. has come upon you.

  857. And then he describes

  858. himself as the strong

  859. man that's able to

  860. bind and that's able

  861. to bind.

  862. So some of you might

  863. say, okay, so George,

  864. okay, okay, okay, I

  865. knew it was going to

  866. get to this.

  867. Okay, so George, you

  868. don't want us to buy

  869. big red statues of

  870. Satan, and you don't

  871. want us to use Ouija

  872. boards, and you don't

  873. want us to just, you

  874. know, you can say,

  875. okay, maybe you can do

  876. yoga if you're just

  877. stretching, but if you're

  878. asking you to chant,

  879. you know, Hindu gods,

  880. you shouldn't do it.

  881. And, you know, George,

  882. I knew it was just

  883. going to come to a

  884. whole pile of negatives,

  885. right, because that's

  886. what you Christian and

  887. religious types do.

  888. All you want to do is

  889. just talk about

  890. negatives.

  891. Don't do this, don't

  892. do this, don't do

  893. this, don't do this.

  894. Is that now, George,

  895. what your application's

  896. going to be of all of

  897. this?

  898. Just it's going to be a

  899. whole lot of no's?

  900. No.

  901. Actually, what the text

  902. is showing is that,

  903. well, actually, Andrew,

  904. if you could put it up.

  905. Only following religious

  906. and spiritual rules

  907. creates the illusion

  908. of emptiness.

  909. The kingdom of God is

  910. primarily about the

  911. saving presence of Jesus.

  912. Only following religious

  913. and spiritual rules

  914. creates the illusion of

  915. emptiness, like a free

  916. space, a space where you

  917. can just sort of be

  918. yourself.

  919. You learn the different

  920. no's.

  921. Okay, I can't do this,

  922. I can't do this, I can't

  923. do this, I can't do this,

  924. I can't do this.

  925. What it ends up leaving

  926. is a place where you

  927. sort of can do whatever

  928. you want.

  929. If it's Islam, you follow

  930. this rule and this rule

  931. and this rule.

  932. If it's different ways

  933. of Christianity being

  934. understood as a religion,

  935. then you don't watch

  936. pornography and you don't

  937. do this and you don't do

  938. this and you have your

  939. own thing and you learn

  940. this ritual and you learn

  941. this.

  942. But all it is is creating

  943. all these no's and in a

  944. sense where the heart is,

  945. where you really are as

  946. yourself, it's like that's

  947. just sort of empty.

  948. You can do whatever you

  949. want.

  950. It's unchanged.

  951. And spirituality, for the

  952. spiritual, not religious,

  953. it might be that the rules

  954. are a bit more transgressive

  955. and some of them are like

  956. giving the finger to

  957. religions or some of them

  958. are just something which is

  959. highly idiosyncratic but

  960. it's still a whole pile of

  961. no's that creates what I'm

  962. going to suggest is an

  963. illusion of emptiness.

  964. But as we're going to see,

  965. Jesus here is saying that

  966. I'm not about emptiness and

  967. I'm not about religious

  968. rules.

  969. I'm about the heart and the

  970. real true living God in a

  971. world where God, the living

  972. God really exists and the

  973. human heart, which is the

  974. center of who we are, is

  975. really there and it's how

  976. God comes into the human

  977. heart and the human heart

  978. comes into God.

  979. It's about presence, not

  980. absence.

  981. Only following religious and

  982. spiritual rules creates the

  983. illusion of emptiness.

  984. The kingdom of God is

  985. primarily about the saving

  986. presence of Jesus.

  987. That's what it's actually all

  988. about.

  989. See, it comes if you read

  990. verses 24 to 26.

  991. Let's read them.

  992. When the unclean spirit has

  993. gone out of a person, it

  994. passes through waterless

  995. places seeking rest.

  996. And finding none, it says, I

  997. will return to my house from

  998. which I came.

  999. And when it comes, it finds

1000. the house swept and put in

  1001. order.

1002. Then it goes and brings seven

1003. other spirits more evil than

1004. itself and they enter and

  1005. dwell there.

1006. And the last state of that

1007. person is worse than the

  1008. first.

1009. So maybe they followed rules

1010. and as a result of rules,

  1011. they're empty.

1012. Maybe as a result of therapy,

1013. some of the type of

1014. harassment that a person had

  1015. been experiencing that we

1016. might understand as having a

  1017. connection to the demonic,

  1018. that that goes away.

  1019. Maybe by doing certain

  1020. rituals, there's a type of

1021. peace so that certain types

  1022. of harassment all don't

  1023. come.

1024. And in a sense, it describes

  1025. what happens with mere

1026. religion or with therapy or

  1027. mere religious principles or

1028. mere spirituality is that it

1029. can create a type of

  1030. emptiness within.

1031. But what Jesus is saying is

1032. that there's never really an

  1033. emptiness.

  1034. It's an illusion that there's

  1035. emptiness.

1036. And it's very possible that

1037. after what you think is

  1038. emptiness, that something

1039. spiritual comes right back in

  1040. and something far worse.

  1041. wilderness.

1042. Now, I'm not going to try to

1043. explain, I'm not going to try

1044. to explain, I'm not going to

  1045. try to explain what

  1046. wilderness means.

1047. That's one of those things

1048. of just, I think it means

1049. that the demons go towards

  1050. barrenness.

1051. It's all part of the thing

1052. that the demons, when they,

1053. well, how do demons harm us?

1054. They create within us a

  1055. fascination of barrenness

1056. instead of a fascination with

  1057. life.

1058. They create within us a

  1059. fascination with death.

1060. So the barrenness rather than

  1061. fruitfulness, of death rather

1062. than life, of harm rather

1063. than of healing, of binding

  1064. rather than of freeing.

1065. That that's what demons do

  1066. as they come in.

  1067. Of belittling rather than

  1068. building up.

1069. Of pushing down rather than

  1070. lifting up.

1071. Of turning inward eyes and

  1072. being self-centered rather

1073. than having eyes for others

  1074. and wanting to help.

  1075. Of being completely and

1076. utterly, of not being at all

1077. interested in the needs of

  1078. others rather than what

1079. Jesus does which makes us

1080. aware of the needs of others.

  1081. That that's that's what the

1082. demons are doing and I

  1083. think that's partly why

  1084. that this image of

  1085. wilderness is there.

1086. But that's one of those

1087. things that we just have to

  1088. remember the scripture and

  1089. meditate upon the scripture

1090. and ponder the scripture and

  1091. allow that scripture to

1092. influence how we see and

1093. understand what goes on in

1094. our own experience and what

1095. goes on in our life.

1096. But Jesus is talking here

1097. about the danger of an

  1098. illusion of emptiness that

1099. can get filled by a

  1100. spiritual power.

1101. So some of you might say

  1102. okay George I'm a little

1103. bit confused by all of

1104. this and if religion is not

1105. just a matter about learning

  1106. certain rituals, spirituality

1107. is not a matter of learning

1108. certain rituals, if it's not

  1109. just a matter of learning a

1110. whole pile of no's and the

  1111. really religious person knows

  1112. more no's than everybody

1113. else and the spiritual person

1114. just has different no's or

  1115. less no's, different and

  1116. less, like what?

  1117. Here's the thing.

  1118. Everything in this, remember

1119. every week I'm going to say

  1120. this, but everything that

1121. happens in Luke that we're

1122. reading right now in the

1123. weeks to come is all within

1124. the context of Jesus going

  1125. to Jerusalem to die.

1126. It's all about Jesus is going

1127. to Jerusalem to die on the

1128. cross and he's going to

  1129. regularly remind the

  1130. disciples we're heading to

  1131. Jerusalem, I'm heading to

1132. Jerusalem to die on the

  1133. cross.

1134. And you see, so what this

1135. text is inviting us to say

1136. is not to despair that all

1137. we can do is create an

  1138. illusion of emptiness.

  1139. It's creating a context where

1140. we ask for a saving power

1141. that only comes from God.

1142. If you could put up the next

1143. point, Andrew, the context of

1144. the book of Luke, if you read

1145. it and you see in Luke chapter

1146. nine, Jesus says to his

1147. disciples, I'm going to go to

1148. Jerusalem, I'm going to die on

  1149. the cross.

1150. And we're going to see it

  1151. like every couple of

1152. chapters, he says it again,

1153. he says it again until in

1154. Luke chapter 19, he arrives

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1155. in Jerusalem.

  1156. It's going to be a regular

  1157. feature of his teaching.

1158. Everything that we read is to

  1159. be understood as something

1160. Jesus teaches as he goes to

  1161. Jerusalem to die.

1162. And the deep mystery of what

1163. is it all about is that Jesus

1164. is the strong one who dies at

1165. the hands of the weak to save

  1166. the weak.

1167. We're going to look again in a

  1168. moment at verses 21 and 22,

1169. but that's one of the, see,

1170. that's the positive thing that

  1171. Jesus is saying.

  1172. He's saying, listen, the devil's

  1173. a strong man, but he's not

  1174. strong compared to me.

  1175. I'm vastly stronger.

1176. The devil is a strong man

  1177. compared to you.

  1178. He's stronger than you, but I'm

1179. vastly stronger than you and I'm

  1180. vastly stronger than Beelzebub.

  1181. I'm incomparably stronger.

  1182. Incomparably stronger.

1183. And yet the profound mystery,

1184. which is a deep offense to those

1185. of us who worship power, even if

1186. we don't realize it, is that Jesus

1187. is saying this as he's on his way

  1188. to die.

1189. Jesus is the strong one who willingly

1190. dies at the hands of the weak to

  1191. save the weak.

1192. You know, you'll hear me pray over

1193. and over and over again that what

1194. I'm hoping, what I want for myself

1195. is I want to be a disciple of Jesus

1196. gripped by the gospel, living for

  1197. God's glory.

1198. What do I want to do?

1199. I want to be used by God to make

1200. disciples gripped by the gospel,

  1201. living for his glory.

1202. And as we're gripped by the gospel,

1203. we're gripped by the story of the

1204. strong one who willingly went to

1205. Jerusalem to die at the hands of

1206. the weak, to save the weak.

1207. And the Bible describes that this is

1208. the power of God for salvation,

1209. that God provides a power.

1210. I can only stand naked as a weak

  1211. person, as a beggar.

1212. And God provides a power for

1213. salvation that comes in the strong

1214. one, willingly out of love for you

1215. and me, submitting to weak ones.

1216. And by his death, the weak are

  1217. saved.

1218. That in him submitting to weak ones

1219. to kill him, God is providing a

1220. power that saves if we receive.

1221. And so Jesus tells this story, and he

1222. tries to reveal that if it's just

1223. about rules, and it's just about

1224. therapy, and it's just about

1225. principles, and it's just about

1226. religion, and it's just about

1227. spirituality, and it's just about

1228. all of these types of things, it's

1229. just about no's, it creates an

  1230. illusion of emptiness.

1231. But what's actually needed is the

1232. presence of a power for salvation

1233. that all we can do is receive, that he

  1234. desires to give.

1235. And there's sort of another image

1236. within this that helps to put it

  1237. into its context.

1238. Look up again at verse 21.

1239. I'm just going to draw this to a

  1240. close.

1241. It says something very significant

  1242. about human beings.

1243. When a strong man, fully armed,

1244. guards his own palace, his goods are

  1245. safe.

1246. But when one stronger than he attacks

1247. him and overcomes him, he takes

1248. away his armor in which he trusted

  1249. and divides his spoil.

  1250. Look at that.

  1251. Verse 21.

1252. When a strong man, fully armed,

  1253. guards his own palace.

1254. Look down again to verse 24.

1255. When the unclean spirit has gone

1256. out of a person that passes through

1257. waterless places, seeking rest and

1258. finding none, it says, I will return

1259. to my house from which I came.

1260. What is the house or the palace of the

  1261. devil?

1262. In this particular case, it was the man

  1263. who was deaf.

  1264. It wasn't that there's a hell down

1265. there and that there's demons sitting

  1266. on thrones.

1267. It's describing the man who had the

1268. demon cast out of him, that that man

1269. understood the man to be his palace,

  1270. his home.

1271. And the demon sat on the throne in the

  1272. man's life.

1273. See, here's the thing which the Bible is

  1274. opening up to us.

1275. If you could put it up, Andrew.

1276. The Bible teaches that every human being

1277. has a throne at the center of who they are.

1278. The great question is, who or what is on

  1279. the throne?

1280. Every human being has a throne at the center

  1281. of who they are.

1282. The great question is, who or what is on

  1283. the throne?

1284. See, what the Bible teaches is that human

1285. beings, each human being was ultimately,

1286. well, human as a race, but each of us are

1287. created by God and that God made all

  1288. things good.

1289. And God made human beings, even though

1290. there's an integrity to us and a

1291. certain type of a self-possession of each

1292. of us, God made human beings so that the

1293. very center of who we are, which the Bible

1294. uses the word heart, but the very center

1295. of who we are, God placed a throne.

1296. And in the center of whom we are, God sat

  1297. on the throne.

1298. And what happens in Genesis 3 is that, you

1299. know, our, in a sense, our primal ancestors,

1300. Adam and Eve, when they reject God and desire

1301. to be like gods themselves, it's as if they try

1302. to say, I'm going to sit on that throne at the

1303. very, very center of who.

1304. But the throne is made for God.

1305. It's not made for George.

1306. George doesn't have a throne in the center of

1307. who he is that he's to sit on.

1308. George has a throne in the center of who he is

1309. that was made for God.

1310. It's God's throne in the very center of who I am

1311. that he is to sit on.

1312. And when he sits on that throne, when the

1313. kingdom of God, in a sense, is present in

1314. George, that's when George knows not barrenness,

1315. but fruitfulness, not death, but life, not pain,

1316. but joy, not ugliness, but beauty, not being

  1317. bound, but being free.

1318. That's what happens when God is sitting on the

1319. throne, which he built into every single human

  1320. being.

1321. Every single one of you who are here has a

1322. throne at the center of whom you are that was

1323. made for God that only God should sit in.

1324. And part of what religion and spirituality and

1325. therapy and moral principles is all about is

1326. that since we have vacated that, we've pushed God

  1327. out of that throne.

1328. We've, in a sense, kicked him out.

1329. And we can't even really sit on the throne very long.

1330. And so what happens is that throne is filled with

  1331. idols.

1332. And so, in a sense, the throne in the center of my

1333. life is a very crowded throne.

1334. Because maybe I'm trying to sit on that throne, but I

1335. also have an idol of money.

1336. Or I also have an idol of power.

1337. Or I also have an idol of prestige.

1338. Or I also maybe have an idol of my grandkids.

1339. Or I have an idol of my job.

1340. Or I have an idol of my political beliefs.

1341. Or I have a whole pile of idols.

1342. And all of these idols are sitting on the throne of my life.

1343. And a lot of times, all that therapy and religion and

1344. spirituality does is it kicks out the idol of Jack Daniels

1345. and puts a Pharisaic idol in its place.

1346. Sometimes what appears to be conversion is just a changing

  1347. of idols.

1348. An unruly idol is replaced with a very well-ordered idol.

1349. The unruly idol of just being completely crazy is replaced by the

  1350. soccer mom idol.

1351. And so, what Jesus is saying here is that if there's a throne at the

1352. center of every human heart, then he is the strong one on the way to

1353. Jerusalem to die at the hands of weak ones for the weak.

1354. That there is a power from God for salvation that comes.

1355. And we're invited to say to God,

1356. God, I have tried to kick you out of the, it's an illusion that there's this

  1357. empty throne.

1358. It's, in fact, I can never sit on this throne.

1359. And I acknowledge I have a constant parade of idols that I try to put on the

1360. throne at the center of who I am.

1361. And I'm actually helpless to try to deal with this.

1362. I thank you, Jesus, for dying upon the cross for me.

1363. I thank you for being the strong one who dies at the hands of the weak one for the

  1364. weak.

  1365. I am weak.

1366. May you come and take your rightful place with saving power and healing

1367. authority on the throne of my life.

1368. And that's when the Christian life begins.

1369. And the Christian life is lived not by seeking to know more religious rules and

1370. more rituals, although there's things obviously to know, but being so gripped by

1371. the gospel that we understand that Jesus, the one who sits at the throne at the

1372. center of our lives, is a strong one who died for us, who became weak to die for us.

1373. That by nothing that I have done or could do, that Jesus is a power of God for

1374. salvation to be at the very center of who we are.

1375. And that Jesus, when we ask him, will come and live in who we are.

1376. He'll make his home in us, in the throne that is properly his.

  1377. Please stand.

  1378. Thank you.

1379. I'm just going to invite you, all of us.

1380. You know, even, you see, one of the things that's about being a Christian is that we

1381. ask Jesus to be on the throne of our lives.

1382. And part of what happens to us is, before we know it, we want Jesus to have a seat up

1383. there, but we also would like him to sit beside money and power and looks.

1384. And so partly what it means to be a Christian is to be gripped by the gospel and say, once

1385. again, Jesus, I'm slipping into illusion.

1386. I'm slipping into having idols be at the center of who I am.

1387. And Jesus, I want them all out.

1388. I only want you to be at the center of who I am.

1389. And I understand that when you are at the center of who I am, there is freedom.

  1390. There is life.

  1391. There is fruitfulness.

  1392. There is fullness.

1393. Even if external things in my life don't, that that's what you do as you truly reign with

1394. saving power and healing authority at the center of who I am.

1395. That there is fruitfulness in life and reconciliation to you with my creator.

1396. And Jesus, once again, kick out the idols.

1397. I really want to have you enthroned at the center of my life and you alone.

1398. And for others, the Christian life begins by saying, I didn't realize that, Jesus.

  1399. This makes sense.

1400. Please come in and sit in the throne of my life as my savior and as my Lord.

1401. And I'm not going to lead you in a prayer.

1402. I'm just going to say the Holy Spirit is convicting some of you to pray words in your own words.

1403. And all you have to say is, Jesus, there's a throne.

1404. You need to be on it.

1405. Please come in and live in it.

1406. But I'll just say a prayer in closing.

1407. Challenge you, though, to invite Jesus to be on the throne of your life.

  1408. Let's pray.

1409. Father, you know the different idols.

1410. Maybe even for some demonic presence that has a presence on the throne of our lives.

1411. You know what's going on in the lives and hearts of every single person who is here.

1412. And we ask that, Father, in your kindness, that your Holy Spirit would fall with might

1413. and power and deep conviction upon each of us to turn us to Jesus.

1414. Father, deliver us, Father, from illusions of emptiness and illusions of religion and illusions of spirituality.

1415. And, Father, grip us with the gospel.

1416. Grip us with the gospel so that we call out, Father, upon Jesus to sit on the throne of our lives

1417. to be the savior and the Lord of who we are.

  1418. Father, please do this.

  1419. Please rule.

1420. May there be nothing in our lives that is not under your healing authority and saving power.

1421. And we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  1422. Amen.
