  1. As we continue in the letter of Galatians, where Paul has reminded us so many times there's no other gospel,

  2. there's no other good news other than the good news that we are saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and not by our works.

  3. And then he comes to this passage here, talking about the family of Abraham.

  4. And so we're going to think this morning about the gospel family tree for a few minutes.

  5. Paul has already in chapter 3 used the story of Abraham, the example of Abraham to make the point that it was never God's intention to save people by the law.

  6. He called Abraham by a promise 430 years before the law.

  7. And he never changed his intention that we're always saved by promise and not law.

  8. Paul, in chapter 3, he talks about Abraham demonstrating the fact that it was never God's intention that the law would save us.

  9. It was always on the basis of grace and promise and covenant.

  10. And so now he's going to return to the family tree of Abraham to teach some important lessons on the topic of grace and promise.

  11. So Galatians chapter 4 and at verse 21, let's read and hear God's word together.

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  12. Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says?

  13. For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.

  14. His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.

  15. These things may be taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants.

  16. One covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves.

  17. This is Hagar.

  18. Now, Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present city of Jerusalem because she is in slavery with her children.

  19. But the Jerusalem that is above is free and she is our mother.

  20. For it is written,

  21. Be glad, O barren woman, who bears no children.

  22. Break forth and cry aloud, you who have no labour pains,

  23. because more are the children of the desolate woman than of her who has a husband.

  24. Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.

  25. At that time, the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit.

  26. It is the same now.

  27. But what does the scripture say?

  28. Get rid of the slave woman and her son,

  29. for the slave woman's son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman's son.

  30. Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.

  31. This is God's word.

  32. Now, as we look around us today, we discover that tracing our family history,

  33. tracing our family trees is becoming a big deal.

  34. In fact, it's becoming big business.

  35. There are now a variety of DNA testing companies that you can send a sample away to.

  36. They can help you trace your origins and roots.

  37. You can employ a DNA detective.

  38. If you don't know who your family is, if you want to find distant family members,

  39. there is the business of archive research, which grows all the time.

  40. It's made its way into popular culture with TV shows like Who Do You Think You Are?

  41. Where celebrities are brought in and they meet with experts who can help them trace their stories.

  42. Sometimes those stories can be really surprising, really shocking to those who are involved.

  43. But why is this big business to us?

  44. It's because family matters to us.

  45. Family connects us to people and to places.

  46. Family gives us that sense of roots and having a shared identity.

  47. Family is important for a sense of belonging.

  48. Now, central to the whole letter of Galatians is a question,

  49. who are the children of God and how can I become a child of God?

  50. And in the background, Paul, who's writing the letter,

  51. is reacting time and again to false teachers who've been saying,

  52. On the one hand, because we are Jewish people and because we're keeping the law,

  53. we are God's children.

  54. Because of our family tree that we can trace back to Abraham,

  55. we are in God's family.

  56. And on the other hand, they were saying to people who weren't Jewish,

  57. well, you're believing in Jesus, yes, but you also need to become Jewish.

  58. You need to take on Jewish rituals and ceremonies.

  59. You need to be keeping the Jewish law if you really want to be saved and be a child of God.

  60. And so Paul is reacting to that and he's going to say,

  61. that's the wrong way to think about it.

  62. We're saved by grace.

  63. We become children of God by God's loving kindness,

  64. not because of who we are and what we've done.

  65. And he's going to use Paul, Paul's going to use Abraham's family tree in order to teach that.

  66. He's going to give us a warning to say,

  67. don't rely on your family, don't rely on your own moral goodness.

  68. And he's going to give hope.

  69. He's going to say, because it comes as a free gift,

  70. there is good news for anyone who is willing to listen.

  71. So our big question, how can I be a child of God?

  72. Now, boys and girls, let me speak to you for a few minutes.

  73. Sometimes in our families, we are very like our brothers and sisters.

  74. Sometimes you're twins and then you're really, really like,

  75. you know, sometimes we have the same interests.

  76. We like doing the same kind of stuff together.

  77. Other times we're quite different.

  78. Sometimes people wonder, are they actually in the same family because they're so different?

  79. Well, today in our story, Paul is going to tell us about two brothers who are in Abraham's family.

  80. One's called Ishmael and one's called Isaac.

  81. And their stories are very, very different as we're going to think of it.

  82. And Paul says, we can actually think about these two brothers

  83. and think about them standing for two different ways to try and know God.

  84. One is the wrong way and one is the right way.

  85. So he's going to talk about this boy, this man called Ishmael.

  86. And he's going to say, Ishmael stands for the wrong way to try and know God,

  87. which is all about us thinking, well, if I try and be really, really good,

  88. then God will accept me.

  89. God will welcome me.

  90. So if I try and be really good in my family,

  91. if I try and be good at school,

  92. go to church and read my Bible, keep the rules,

  93. Paul's saying, actually, that's not how we are saved.

  94. That's not how we become a child of God.

  95. Because God's standards are higher than ours.

  96. So boys and girls, if I was to ask you,

  97. are you good at jumping?

  98. Probably quite a few of you, if you're quite sporty,

  99. say, yeah, I'm pretty good.

  100. I'm probably better than some people in my class.

  101. So you'd have your own idea.

  102. Here's what good at jumping looks like.

  103. Maybe you could jump as high as this table.

  104. Maybe you could jump as high as my head.

  105. Maybe.

  106. But if I said to you, here's what I think being good at jumping is.

  107. Can you jump high so you can touch the roof?

  108. That's a different standard, isn't it?

  109. That's an impossible standard.

  110. We could never get there.

  111. Even with a trampoline, we couldn't get there.

  112. And what Paul is going to remind us,

  113. he reminds us in this letter again and again,

  114. we cannot be good enough for God's perfect standard.

  115. It's too high for us.

  116. So there needs to be another way.

  117. There needs to be another way for us to be children of God.

  118. So there's a right way.

  119. And that takes us to the other brother, not Ishmael, but to Isaac.

  120. Isaac was the son of a promise.

  121. He came as a gift from God.

  122. And for anyone to be in the family of God, it comes as a gift of God.

  123. It comes as a gift of his kindness.

  124. And what we need to do is not trust in our own goodness.

  125. It's to trust in Jesus.

  126. It's to trust that where we couldn't match God's perfect standard,

  127. Jesus can and Jesus did.

  128. And he did it for us.

  129. And then he died to forgive our sin, to wash our sin away,

  130. to bring us to God.

  131. So as we listen to the Bible story, sometimes in our head,

  132. we think, I just need to be a really good boy.

  133. I need to be a really good girl.

  134. And Paul is saying, no, you need to trust in Jesus.

  135. You need to receive the promised grace from God.

  136. So let's remember that, boys and girls,

  137. as we work our way through our Bible passage here.

  138. Two things I want to say.

  139. The first is it's important to know your family history

  140. in spiritual terms.

  141. Now, who is Paul speaking to at this precise moment in his letter?

  142. Look with me at verse 21.

  143. He says, tell me, you who want to be under the law.

  144. So he's writing to a whole church,

  145. but then he's writing to a group of people within the church,

  146. this group that want to be under the law.

  147. In other words, they want to rely on God's law for their acceptance.

  148. He's writing and speaking to a group of people who are tempted to say,

  149. I need Jesus and I need the law.

  150. So they're tempted to that way of thinking.

  151. Now, he says to them positively in verse 28 that they are brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus.

  152. In verse 31, therefore, brothers and sisters, he'll say,

  153. you're children of the free women.

  154. You already have all these wonderful things.

  155. So he's warning them, don't go back to an old way, to a bad way of thinking.

  156. And to help them with that, he uses the story of Abraham again.

  157. So verse 21, are you not aware of what the law says?

  158. First five books of the Bible, sometimes known as the law.

  159. Book of Genesis is where we find the story of Abraham.

  160. And he's going to use that story to show them that being under the law,

  161. it is to be in slavery.

  162. And he's going to point them back to God's way of grace.

  163. So in verses 22 and 23, we get a summary of two branches of Abraham's family tree.

  164. And boys and girls, you'll find on your worksheet,

  165. there's these details that you can fill in so that we can help to track with what Paul is saying.

  166. Let's read verse 22 again.

  167. For it is written that Abraham had two sons,

  168. one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.

  169. So there are two mothers.

  170. We only get the name of one of them in this passage.

  171. Her name is Hagar.

  172. She's the slave woman.

  173. And then Abraham's wife is Sarah,

  174. described here as the free woman.

  175. So this is taking us back to the story that we find beginning in Genesis 12,

  176. all the way to Genesis 21.

  177. And in that section, we find time and time again,

  178. God made promises to Abraham and to Sarah,

  179. promising that they would have a child, that God would bless them,

  180. that they would become a great nation,

  181. and that one of their seed would be the source of blessing for the whole world.

  182. Those were promises to Abraham and to Sarah in particular.

  183. But as time passes in the story in Genesis,

  184. Abraham and Sarah are old and getting older,

  185. and Sarah can't have children.

  186. And so we get to this point in Genesis chapter 16,

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  187. where Sarah comes up with a new plan.

  188. She says to Abraham,

  189. I can't have children,

  190. so why don't you take my slave woman,

  191. Hagar,

  192. and start a family with her?

  193. So we end up in Abraham's family tree.

  194. We have two mothers.

  195. We have Hagar, the slave woman,

  196. and we have Sarah, the free woman.

  197. And then we have two sons.

  198. Verse 23.

  199. His son by the slave woman

  200. was born in the ordinary way,

  201. but his son by the free woman

  202. was born as the result of a promise.

  203. So his son by the slave woman,

  204. again, is not given a name here,

  205. but we know in the Bible that this is Ishmael.

  206. And Paul says he's born in the ordinary way

  207. because he's the project of Abraham and Sarah and Hagar

  208. coming together, having this discussion,

  209. working out how to get a son,

  210. born in the natural way,

  211. representing human effort.

  212. But then there's this other child mentioned,

  213. the child who's born as the result of the promise,

  214. and this is Isaac,

  215. who is the son of Sarah.

  216. And he's not born in an ordinary way.

  217. He's born in an extraordinary,

  218. in a supernatural way,

  219. because his birth comes

  220. as a result of God's kindness,

  221. as a result of God's faithfulness

  222. to that promise that he'd made

  223. as a result of God's gracious provision

  224. to Abraham and to Sarah.

  225. So Isaac comes as a gift of grace

  226. in response to that promise

  227. that they'd received.

  228. So here is Paul,

  229. and he's tracing out these two different branches

  230. of Abraham's family tree,

  231. but why is he doing it?

  232. What point is he making here?

  233. Well, he's trying to remind

  234. these Christians who are tempted

  235. to go back under the law

  236. and to become Jewish.

  237. He's saying being a child of God

  238. is not about physical DNA.

  239. It's not about our biology.

  240. It's not about the family

  241. that we belong to.

  242. And nor is it about human effort.

  243. It's not about human effort

  244. at law keeping.

  245. Rather, enjoying God's freedom

  246. is a gift to receive by faith.

  247. It's the message he's been bringing

  248. to us again and again

  249. in the book of Galatians.

  250. Now, why is he making the point?

  251. He's making the point, remember,

  252. these are people who are free in Christ,

  253. but they're tempted to go back

  254. towards slavery.

  255. He's making the point

  256. to say to them

  257. that by trusting in Jesus,

  258. they're already adopted

  259. as children of God.

  260. He's saying to them,

  261. don't forget,

  262. that's already yours.

  263. That's your status.

  264. Let's remind ourselves

  265. of Galatians 4, verses 4 and 5.

    Galatians 4:4

  266. He says,

  267. when the time had fully come,

  268. God sent his son Jesus,

  269. born of a woman,

  270. born under law,

  271. to redeem those under law

  272. that we might receive

  273. the full rights of sons.

  274. Verse 7,

  275. you're no longer a slave,

  276. but a son.

  277. And since you're a son,

  278. God has also made you an heir.

  279. You don't need anything else

  280. if you're trusting in

  281. the Lord Jesus Christ

  282. for your salvation

  283. and your acceptance

  284. from God.

  285. But this passage

  286. stands as a reminder to us

  287. that even as Christians,

  288. we stand in danger

  289. of what we might call

  290. legalism,

  291. relying on the law

  292. in order to be accepted

  293. by God.

  294. If I do this thing,

  295. and if I don't do that thing,

  296. then God will love me more.

  297. He will value me more highly.

  298. Or if I keep this list of things

  299. that I must do,

  300. then God will surely accept me.

  301. And on the other hand,

  302. if I do badly,

  303. if I fail,

  304. then perhaps God will love me less.

  305. Perhaps God will want nothing

  306. to do with me.

  307. And we become very insecure

  308. or very proud and judgmental

  309. or despairing

  310. when our sense of salvation

  311. is rooted in

  312. what we are doing

  313. and how we are performing.

  314. And so Paul is reminding them

  315. that the gospel of grace

  316. gives us freedom from that.

  317. The knowledge that because

  318. we're in Christ,

  319. we are fully loved

  320. and accepted.

  321. Let's think about it this way.

  322. Boys and girls,

  323. when it's your birthday time,

  324. do you find your parents

  325. coming with a sheet of paper

  326. and adding up your list

  327. of good things and bad things?

  328. Do they say,

  329. oh wow,

  330. you did really well

  331. helping with the dishes

  332. and you're really kind

  333. and helpful.

  334. Oh, but

  335. you did that thing wrong

  336. and that thing wrong.

  337. Therefore,

  338. I was going to give you this gift,

  339. but now

  340. it didn't quite make the good.

  341. We don't do that.

  342. We give

  343. out of grace

  344. and out of love

  345. and out of kindness.

  346. And we need to recognize

  347. that God is far more generous

  348. and loving towards

  349. His children.

  350. And we have this invitation

  351. to joy

  352. and freedom

  353. and security

  354. in Christ

  355. if we are in Him.

  356. Because if we are in Him,

  357. we enjoy God's perfect gift,

  358. His perfect love.

  359. And it's when we are resting in that,

  360. when we are trusting in that,

  361. then we have also the freedom to obey.

  362. He's going to start talking about

  363. because you're free,

  364. you get to obey

  365. out of thankful hearts,

  366. not because you're afraid

  367. that you'll be judged,

  368. but because you want to please

  369. your Father.

  370. So know your family history.

  371. All of us

  372. are either

  373. an Ishmael

  374. by nature

  375. in slavery

  376. to sin

  377. and far from God

  378. or we are

  379. an Isaac

  380. by God's grace

  381. set free.

  382. Which family tree

  383. do we belong to

  384. and which family tree

  385. do we want to be

  386. part of?

  387. And we need to understand

  388. that it all depends

  389. on how we respond

  390. to Jesus,

  391. the King,

  392. to Jesus,

  393. the Lord and Savior.

  394. Do we turn from sin?

  395. Do we trust that He forgave sin?

  396. That He has the power

  397. to deal with the power

  398. and the penalty of sin

  399. to give us new life,

  400. to bring us to God?

  401. And as Christians,

  402. how can we avoid

  403. this danger of legalism

  404. that some of the Galatian church

  405. was falling into?

  406. Again, it's about knowing

  407. your family history.

  408. Live with freedom and joy

  409. because you know

  410. that you're living

  411. in light of the promise

  412. and grace

  413. and because of Jesus'

  414. finished work

  415. on your behalf.

  416. Take a gospel

  417. DNA test.

  418. What am I trusting in

  419. for my salvation?

  420. Am I trusting in Jesus alone

  421. or am I tempted to think

  422. it's Jesus plus

  423. my efforts,

  424. plus

  425. my law keeping?

  426. If we're trusting

  427. in Jesus alone,

  428. we're told we're a child

  429. and an heir of God,

  430. we're in God's family

  431. with all the freedom

  432. that that brings.

  433. So know your family history

  434. and also know your family story.

  435. In verses 24 to 31,

  436. Paul moves away

  437. from a straightforward

  438. family tree

  439. and he begins to use allegory.

  440. He uses this family tree

  441. to stand for spiritual truth.

  442. He's continuing

  443. to build his argument

  444. that we trust in grace

  445. and promise

  446. and not effort

  447. and law.

  448. So he's going to say

  449. these families represent

  450. different realities.

  451. First of all,

  452. the two families represent

  453. two different covenants.

  454. So look with me

  455. at verse 24.

  456. And we find that's

  457. exactly what he says.

  458. These things may be

  459. taken figuratively

  460. for the women

  461. represent two covenants.

  462. One covenant

  463. is from Mount Sinai.

  464. So that's the covenant

  465. of law at Mount Sinai.

  466. But then there's

  467. another covenant.

  468. There's the covenant

  469. of promise.

  470. Verse 28,

  471. Now you brothers

  472. like Isaac

  473. are children

  474. of promise.

  475. So as I was saying

  476. just before we started

  477. reading the Bible

  478. that in Galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  479. Paul had already said

  480. promise comes first.

  481. Promise was always

  482. the only way

  483. to be a child of God.

  484. And in actual fact

  485. the law's purpose

  486. is to lead us

  487. to see our own sin

  488. and to see why

  489. we need Jesus

  490. as Savior.

  491. And so

  492. Hagar and Ishmael

  493. represent

  494. living under the law

  495. whereas Sarah

  496. and Isaac

  497. represent living

  498. under the covenant

  499. of promise.

  500. And he goes further

  501. and he talks about

  502. two places.

  503. Verse 25,

  504. Now Hagar

  505. stands for Mount Sinai

  506. in Arabia

  507. and corresponds

  508. to the present city

  509. of Jerusalem

  510. because she is

  511. in slavery

  512. with her children.

  513. So there's the physical

  514. city of Jerusalem

  515. in verse 25

  516. and then verse 26

  517. there's the Jerusalem

  518. that is above

  519. which is free

  520. or the heavenly Jerusalem.

  521. So one is a place

  522. filled with slaves

  523. marked by slavery.

  524. The other is filled

  525. with children of God

  526. who are enjoying

  527. freedom.

  528. And that points us

  529. to these two conditions

  530. that Paul is driving towards.

  531. So one is slavery.

  532. One covenant

  533. verse 24 again

  534. is from Mount Sinai

  535. and bears children

  536. who are to be slaves.

  537. Verse 26,

  538. But the Jerusalem

  539. that is above

  540. is free

  541. and she is

  542. our mother.

  543. Now,

  544. we maybe don't get

  545. the sense of this

  546. but there is a real

  547. shock factor

  548. in what Paul

  549. has just said.

  550. So remember

  551. he's speaking

  552. against

  553. these false teachers,

  554. these Judaizers

  555. who are so proud

  556. of their family tree,

  557. so proud

  558. of their DNA,

  559. so proud

  560. of their law keeping,

  561. believing that

  562. that made them

  563. children of God.

  564. And he turns

  565. and he says

  566. to you

  567. spiritually

  568. you are slaves.

  569. You think

  570. you are free,

  571. you think

  572. you're children

  573. of promise

  574. but because

  575. you're not trusting

  576. in Jesus

  577. spiritually

  578. you're slaves.

  579. Jerusalem is described

  580. as a city

  581. full of slaves

  582. because by and large

  583. they had rejected Jesus.

  584. They decided

  585. we don't need Jesus,

  586. we'll continue

  587. to trust

  588. in our own righteousness,

  589. in our own efforts

  590. at law keeping

  591. and so they rejected

  592. Jesus,

  593. God's Savior.

  594. So Paul says

  595. to them

  596. when you trace

  597. your family story

  598. spiritually

  599. you discover

  600. a nasty surprise.

  601. I was reading

  602. about some

  603. of the highlights

  604. of that TV show

  605. Who Do You Think You Are?

  606. I think it's been on

  607. for 10 seasons

  608. and one of the

  609. most surprising,

  610. shocking moments

  611. for one of the guests

  612. was when

  613. Ainsley Harriet,

  614. you know the TV chef,

  615. he was on

  616. finding out

  617. about his family history

  618. and he discovered

  619. that his great,

  620. great grandmother

  621. when she was just

  622. two years old

  623. in Trinidad

  624. was sold

  625. into slavery.

  626. And so there was

  627. a real shock

  628. for him

  629. discovering

  630. that he was

  631. descended

  632. from this slave woman

  633. who he'd known

  634. nothing about.

  635. Paul wants

  636. to shock

  637. his readers

  638. to say to them

  639. look if you continue

  640. on this path

  641. that the false teachers

  642. are recommending

  643. your family story

  644. will be about slavery.

  645. You will make

  646. yourself slaves

  647. if you walk away

  648. from Jesus

  649. and his grace.

  650. To the legalist

  651. he's saying

  652. you think you enjoy

  653. promise and privilege

  654. because you're

  655. Abraham's children

  656. but because you

  657. reject Jesus

  658. your father

  659. is Ishmael

  660. not Isaac.

  661. To rely on

  662. our own ability

  663. rather than

  664. the supernatural

  665. grace of God

  666. is to remain

  667. in slavery

  668. is to remain

  669. under judgment

  670. and this should

  671. stand as a

  672. warning

  673. to us.

  674. I don't know

  675. how many of you

  676. have done

  677. the series

  678. called

  679. Christianity

  680. Explored

  681. but in one

  682. of those sessions

  683. there is a question

  684. that is asked

  685. why should God

  686. let you

  687. into heaven?

  688. And there are

  689. various people

  690. who come up

  691. on the screen

  692. and they present

  693. answers that

  694. ultimately

  695. are not good enough

  696. but answers

  697. that many people

  698. rely on.

  699. I'm a good

  700. person.

  701. I give to

  702. charity.

  703. I try and obey

  704. the law.

  705. I've never been

  706. to prison.

  707. I read my

  708. Bible.

  709. I pray.

  710. And what Paul

  711. teaches, what the

  712. Bible teaches

  713. is that any

  714. answer that

  715. begins because

  716. I, it is

  717. doomed to

  718. failure.

  719. The only way

  720. into God's

  721. presence, the

  722. only way to

  723. know and enjoy

  724. God's love is

  725. because Jesus.

  726. Because Jesus

  727. loved me.

  728. Because Jesus

  729. gave himself for

  730. me.

  731. Because Jesus

  732. died in my

  733. place and for

  734. my sins.

  735. So he gives a

  736. warning about

  737. slavery and

  738. then he gives

  739. the promise,

  740. the reminder

  741. of freedom.

  742. Almost the

  743. flip side to

  744. Ainsley

  745. Harriet's story

  746. is the story

  747. told by C.S.

  748. Lewis in

  749. The Horse and

  750. His Boy.

  751. I don't know

  752. how many of

  753. the boys and

  754. girls have read

  755. through some of

  756. the Chronicles of

  757. Narnia.

  758. Well, in The

  759. Horse and His

  760. Boy, which I

  761. think is the

  762. third one in

  763. the series, the

  764. story begins with

  765. a boy called

  766. Shasta.

  767. And Shasta was

  768. being raised by a

  769. really mean

  770. fisherman who was

  771. basically keeping

  772. him as a slave and

  773. he thought this

  774. man, this horrible

  775. mean man was his

  776. dad.

  777. But then he goes

  778. on this adventure,

  779. he runs away from

  780. home, goes on

  781. and it turns out

  782. he's actually a

  783. prince.

  784. He's actually a

  785. son of the king

  786. living as a slave.

  787. But actually, he

  788. had this glorious

  789. freedom.

  790. And Paul is

  791. saying, look, you're

  792. wanting to go back

  793. to slavery but you

  794. have this glorious

  795. freedom to enjoy.

  796. That's what he's

  797. saying to us as a

  798. church.

  799. The opposite of

  800. slavery is freedom

  801. and the opposite of

  802. human effort is

  803. God's initiative,

  804. God's power,

  805. God's grace and

  806. that's represented

  807. by Isaac's family

  808. tree.

  809. So in verse

  810. 29, at that

  811. time, the son

  812. born in the

  813. ordinary way

  814. persecuted the

  815. son born, how?

  816. Born by the

  817. power of the

  818. spirit.

  819. So here is a

  820. reminder that

  821. Isaac was a

  822. gift from God.

  823. There is grace

  824. in evidence here.

  825. And Paul also

  826. parallels this with

  827. the story of

  828. Israel.

  829. That's why he

  830. quotes in verse

  831. 27 from Isaiah

    Isaiah 54 chapter mention

  832. chapter 54.

  833. These are words

  834. spoken to

  835. exiled Israel,

  836. feeling abandoned,

  837. feeling small,

  838. feeling weak and

  839. helpless.

  840. Here is hope for

  841. them that God

  842. would restore them

  843. by his grace and

  844. would expand their

  845. family.

  846. Here is promise

  847. that God's kingdom

  848. will be much

  849. bigger than

  850. anybody ever

  851. imagined.

  852. So Paul uses

  853. the story of

  854. Isaac and he

  855. uses the story

  856. of Israel to

  857. bring hope.

  858. Hope.

  859. Because it's all

  860. about Jesus,

  861. anyone can

  862. become a child

  863. of God.

  864. It's not

  865. restricted to

  866. those who have

  867. the right family

  868. pedigree.

  869. It's not about

  870. our human

  871. family.

  872. It's not about

  873. our background

  874. and circumstances.

  875. It's not about

  876. our ability or

  877. morality.

  878. It's all about

  879. faith in Jesus,

  880. trusting in who

  881. he is as the

  882. son of God and

  883. what he has

  884. done in

  885. coming to

  886. rescue us

  887. from our

  888. sin to bring

  889. us to God.

  890. It's really

  891. important for us

  892. to notice how

  893. he closes off

  894. his discussion

  895. of these two

  896. family trees.

  897. Verse 29,

  898. we read about

  899. Ishmael

  900. persecuting

  901. Isaac.

  902. And Paul says

  903. at the end of

  904. verse 29,

  905. it's the same

  906. now.

  907. That these

  908. false teachers

  909. are persecuting

  910. those who are

  911. trusting in

  912. Jesus.

  913. And then

  914. verse 30,

  915. what does the

  916. scripture say?

  917. Get rid of

  918. the slave woman

  919. and her son,

  920. for the slave

  921. woman's son will

  922. never share in

  923. the inheritance

  924. with the free

  925. woman's son.

  926. So in Abraham's

  927. family, under

  928. Abraham's roof,

  929. there was fighting

  930. and there was

  931. tension.

  932. There were two

  933. families, two

  934. brothers who

  935. couldn't live

  936. under the same

  937. roof.

  938. Ishmael was

  939. persecuting his

  940. younger brother

  941. Isaac.

  942. And there is this

  943. reminder, only

  944. the child of

  945. promise would

  946. receive God's

  947. spiritual inheritance,

  948. not Ishmael.

  949. And then Paul

  950. applies the story

  951. to the church and

  952. says that in the

  953. same way, you

  954. cannot have

  955. existing in the

  956. same place a

  957. theology that

  958. rests on grace

  959. and a theology

  960. that rests on

  961. human works.

  962. One of them

  963. must go so

  964. that grace alone

  965. is left to

  966. stand.

  967. And so we

  968. must be really

  969. careful in our

  970. churches to

  971. preserve the

  972. gospel of grace

  973. to defend it

  974. from legalism

  975. which is always

  976. a danger that

  977. we face.

  978. Which family

  979. story is

  980. ours today?

  981. Are we under

  982. law?

  983. Thinking it's

  984. all about do

  985. better, try

  986. harder and in

  987. the end I hope

  988. that God might

  989. accept me?

  990. Or are we

  991. under Christ

  992. where it is

  993. true security

  994. because we're

  995. resting on his

  996. finished work,

  997. his precious

  998. promises to

  999. us so that

  1000. we can know

  1001. that we are

  1002. God's children

  1003. because only in

  1004. Jesus is there

  1005. freedom to enjoy

  1006. God's promise.

  1007. Only in Jesus

  1008. can we become

  1009. children of God

  1010. through what

  1011. Jesus came to

  1012. do for us.
