  1. Father, your word has just said things which probably most people in Canada would find very deeply offensive.

  2. And Father, some of us, if we were honest with you, we find the words very uncomfortable, maybe even depressing.

  3. Father, you know what's going on in our hearts.

  4. You know our loves and our fears.

  5. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would gently but deeply take the words of Jesus and have them go deep into our heart, the center of who we are, deep into our mind and deep into our wills.

  6. That our minds might increasingly have the mind of Jesus and our hearts might have the heart of Jesus.

  7. And that Jesus would truly be our Savior and our Lord.

  8. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. Is Christianity exclusive and intolerant?

  11. You just heard the gospel text.

  12. Is Christianity exclusive and intolerant?

  13. Can we, like a lot of Christians, pass off the exclusivity and intolerance as a product of Christendom or as a product of bad churches or bad Christians?

  14. Or is the problem actually go right back to Jesus?

  15. Is Jesus exclusive and intolerant?

  16. That's the big question.

  17. And I think maybe if you weren't paying attention, we're going to look at the text because for some of us it would be, it's a bit of a terrifying text.

  18. It's a very un-Canadian and very unpalatable to us.

  19. So it would be a great help to me if you got your Bibles and open them up to Luke chapter 13 verse 22.

    Luke 13:22

  20. And let's look at the text.

  21. Let's, in a sense, be gripped by it, by what it says.

  22. Hear it and ask the deep questions.

  23. Because it asks a question which ever since I was in high school 100 million years ago,

  24. a very, very common objection to the Christian faith is the exclusivity of the Christian faith.

  25. It's a common objection that I've heard for many, many, many, many decades.

  26. And this text directly comes at it.

  27. So it's Luke chapter 13 verse 22.

    Luke 13:22

  28. If you don't have Bibles with you, there's always Bibles at the front of the church, which you're welcome to take.

  29. Keep them afterwards if you'd like as a gift or you could return them afterwards.

  30. And here's how the text goes.

  31. Luke chapter 13 verse 22.

    Luke 13:22

  32. Jesus went on his way through towns and villages teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem.

  33. And someone said to him, Lord, will those who are saved be few?

  34. Lord, will those who are saved be few?

  35. That's the big question.

  36. It's a big question.

  37. So how's Jesus going to answer it?

  38. He goes in verse 24.

  39. He says this.

  40. And he said to them,

  41. Strive to enter through the narrow door.

  42. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

  43. Many of us cry at that text.

  44. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to organize moments like that, actually.

  45. There's somebody out there actually waiting to hear this,

  46. and then they pinch the kids just to make them cry at the right moment.

  47. No, that's not true.

  48. That's absolutely not true.

  49. I'll say it again.

  50. Strive to enter through the narrow door.

  51. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

  52. Now, just a couple of things about this text.

  53. First of all, we see that the word saved,

  54. which many people in our culture think is connected just to a certain branch of Christianity,

  55. is actually a Bible word.

  56. And at no point in time in the text does Jesus reject the word.

  57. He accepts the word, accepts the question, and answers the question, and explains in part the word.

  58. But the word saved is a Bible word, not a church party word.

  59. But the next two things are actually far more worrisome, especially given what Jesus accepts the word saved.

  60. The first is that Jesus says that there is a narrow door, and that there's only a narrow door.

  61. And if that's not troublesome enough to many of us in Canada, he goes on to say that people will want to enter that narrow door and won't be allowed to.

  62. In other words, for many of us, hoping that Jesus is going to give a pluralistic and tolerant answer,

  63. he actually, not only does he worry us with the narrow door, but he seems to actually make it worse.

  64. He touches on all of our deep fears of being excluded by saying that some will want to enter and they won't be able to.

  65. Well, does Jesus qualify this?

  66. He actually, well, we'll read.

  67. He actually, at least just to grasp it in the first reading of the text, he actually seems to make it worse.

  68. Verse 25.

  69. When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door,

  70. and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door saying,

  71. Lord, open to us, then he will answer you, I do not know where you come from.

  72. Then you will begin to say, we ate and drank in your presence and you taught in our streets.

  73. But he will say, I tell you, I do not know where you come from.

  74. Depart from me, all you workers of evil.

  75. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  76. When you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God,

  77. but you yourselves cast out.

  78. And people will come from east and west and from north and south and recline at table in the kingdom of God.

  79. And behold, some are last who will be first and some are first who will be last.

  80. So this text, in a sense, you know, we think that when you die, you go to a better place.

  81. That's the typical Canadian view.

  82. And we think that Jesus will promote happiness and peaceful thoughts and calmness.

  83. But the text makes clear that not only is there a narrow door, but that at some point in time,

  84. the door which is open will be shut.

  85. And who is it who shuts the narrow door but Jesus?

  86. Jesus is the master of the house who shuts the door.

  87. And his shutting of the door means that there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  88. And it's a very shocking text.

  89. For many of us, it's not the sort of Bible text we'd want one of our friends to bring to us

  90. and ask us to do a study.

  91. It's not something we'd want to have discussed by a professor in class

  92. or around the coffee break table in the place where you work

  93. or at the play group where you brought the kids, where the kids are playing

  94. and somebody says, let's talk about passages in the Bible.

  95. And if they've read out this text, your hearts would sink.

  96. You'd say, why don't we talk about another text?

  97. Or at least you'd be thinking that.

  98. Well, was Jesus, maybe he was just ignorant.

  99. You know, this is going to be hard for younger people to believe.

  100. Here's going to be one of my old person moments.

  101. I graduated from high school 100 million years ago in Ottawa.

  102. And when I graduated from high school, it was, I think, a school that had 1,400 or 1,500 people in it that year.

  103. So my graduating class was like eight classes, all with like 25, 30 people in them.

  104. But in the entire high school, there were two people who were Chinese.

  105. Out of like 1,400, 1,500 students, two who were Chinese,

  106. two who were from India, and two that were black.

  107. The rest were white.

  108. Interestingly enough, the two Chinese were both Christians.

  109. And one of the black people was the head student in our graduating year.

  110. Just a bit of an aside.

  111. But maybe Jesus is just ignorant.

  112. Like maybe Jesus just isn't aware of the fact that there's this pluralistic world out there

  113. and that there's lots of different gods and there's lots of different paths.

  114. Maybe Jesus is just a Galilean peasant.

  115. And granted, he has lots of, you know, he likes to rub, you know, rub the politically powerful the wrong way

  116. and he loves to, you know, he likes to support the people and all that.

  117. But he's sort of a man of his day, a man of his age.

  118. And he's just sort of ignorant of the broader social things that are going on.

  119. Just not well important.

  120. Is that what's going on with Jesus?

  121. Well, actually, the very next words show that Jesus, that's not what's going on with Jesus,

  122. if we'd continue reading.

  123. And actually, in the very first words of verse 31, at the level of the original language,

  124. these are connecting words.

  125. It's showing that you need to, if you're going to begin with the question,

  126. will those who are saved be few?

  127. You need to continue reading on past verse 30 into verse 31 and on.

  128. It's all part of how Luke and Jesus explain the answer to the question.

  129. But it goes on in verse 31.

  130. At the very hour, that very hour, some Pharisees came and said to Jesus,

  131. get away from here for Herod wants to kill you.

  132. And Jesus said to them, go and tell that fox.

  133. Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow.

  134. And the third day I finish my course.

  135. Now, here's the thing about this right off the bat is that Herod isn't Jewish.

  136. And everybody, I mean, we might not know it, but everybody in Jesus' day knows that Herod's not Jewish.

  137. And so Luke, who's writing this gospel primarily to pagans and skeptics,

  138. puts right in there a non-Jewish person, a person who worships other gods,

  139. puts it right in there in the text.

  140. And in fact, we might not remember it or think about it,

  141. but in fact, Jesus grew up in Galilee.

  142. He's ministering.

  143. He's speaking right now in Galilee.

  144. And one of the reasons that Galilee was sort of looked down upon by people in Jerusalem

  145. was not just because it was rural, but also because it was multicultural,

  146. that it was a mixed area where Jews and non-Jews lived together,

  147. where those who worshiped the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob

  148. coexisted as neighbors with people who did not worship the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.

  149. And on top of all of that, every single Jewish person would have been seen regularly

  150. unless they lived in a very, very remote village, Roman soldiers,

  151. who were over the entire area.

  152. And Roman soldiers were all pagans.

  153. In fact, Jesus would have been deeply aware of the fact that there were many,

  154. many different gods and many different beliefs about the different ways to God.

  155. And he probably even knew that the Roman Empire was, in fact, from our point of view,

  156. a pluralistic world when it came to religion.

  157. It was polytheistic.

  158. In fact, Jesus' words so far would have been an offense to the Jewish people

  159. who believed that all Jews would one day be saved by the Messiah.

  160. And Jesus is implying that they won't.

  161. But that in a planet with, I don't know how many, hundreds of millions of people,

  162. there were only one tiny little group of people who believed in one God

  163. and weren't polytheists, and that's where the Jews.

  164. And Jesus would have known that.

  165. So Jesus isn't ignorant.

  166. And the text reminds us that he's not ignorant by bringing in a non-Jewish reference

  167. to help us know that, okay, whatever is going on with the words of Jesus,

  168. it can't be that he's not aware of an option.

  169. He's very aware of an option of being pluralistic.

  170. And he's not afraid of dying.

  171. So it's not that he's not going to say this because he's worried about offending people.

  172. In fact, he says to Herod, by calling Herod a fox,

  173. he's calling Herod a deceptive, deceiving, sort of slimy character.

  174. So he's not afraid to offend.

  175. And he's not about to be silenced, which might have been a little bit about what the Pharisees were trying to do when Jesus spoke.

  176. So what's going on?

  177. Well, let's continue just to finish reading.

  178. I sort of stopped a bit too early.

  179. So verse 33.

  180. Nevertheless, remember he says, so go back to 32.

  181. Go tell that fox, behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow.

  182. And the third day I finish my course.

  183. That doesn't mean literal three days.

  184. It's just saying he has a course that he's following, that he's going along.

  185. Verse 33.

  186. Nevertheless, I must go my way today and tomorrow and the day following,

  187. for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.

  188. Just sort of pause there for a second.

  189. In the original language, must sort of has a bit of a sense of it,

  190. but it's far stronger in the original language.

  191. And afterwards, some of you can tell me how I pronounce the word.

  192. I've heard it pronounced two different ways, so I'm not sure which is the right way to pronounce it.

  193. But the word must in the original language is a telos or telos word.

  194. It's the idea that there's this end, a goal, a defining objective that defines the whole purpose of the entire endeavor.

  195. It is the end towards which everything moves.

  196. And unless you know that the telos, the telos, is that which is being moved towards,

  197. you don't understand anything that's going on.

  198. And that's the word that Jesus uses about going to Jerusalem to die.

  199. That first of all, he offends the Jewish people by saying that the source of danger for me is not the non-Jewish Herod.

  200. The danger for me is Jerusalem.

  201. That is where I will die.

  202. And me going to Jerusalem to die is the defining moment.

  203. It's that which explains every single thing about who I am.

  204. It is my telos, my telos, my goal, my end, the end for me.

  205. And he continues in verse 34 with very, very, all of a sudden, he seems like he's been hard-hearted.

  206. And all of a sudden, something deeply emotional breaks out from him in verse 34,

  207. which helps us to understand that all the way through, he's not been hard-hearted.

  208. That's why the whole text together is so very important.

  209. But in verse 34, he says,

  210. Oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it.

  211. How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings?

  212. And you would not.

  213. Behold, your house is forsaken, and I tell you, you will not see me until you say,

  214. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  215. So what on earth is going on in this text?

  216. Is Jesus just one exclusivist butting heads with Jewish exclusivists?

  217. Is he sort of almost a bit schizophrenic that on one hand he's hard-hearted,

  218. on the other hand he's soft-hearted?

  219. Like, is he sort of unaware or ignorant of what he's saying on one hand,

  220. and on the other hand, like, what's going on?

  221. Well, let's go back to the beginning of the text.

  222. We're going to read it through quickly.

  223. But let's look through the text, mindful of how the text ended.

  224. And let's listen again to verses 22 to 24.

  225. Excuse me.

  226. And he went on his way through towns and villages,

  227. teaching and journeying towards Jerusalem.

  228. It reminds us that in the Gospel of Luke,

  229. everything that's happened since towards the end of chapter 9

  230. is all about Jesus going to Jerusalem to die.

  231. If we'd forgotten it while we're reading it,

  232. the text reminds us he's going to Jerusalem to die.

  233. He went on his way through towns and villages,

  234. teaching and journeying towards Jerusalem.

  235. And someone said to him,

  236. Lord, will those who are saved be few?

  237. And he said to them,

  238. And strive to enter through the narrow door,

  239. for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.

  240. Andrew, if you could put up the first point.

  241. How wide is the narrow door?

  242. It is as wide as the cross

  243. on which Jesus the Messiah,

  244. the Son of God, died.

  245. How wide is the narrow door?

  246. It is as wide as the cross

  247. It is as wide as the cross

  248. on which Jesus the Messiah,

  249. the Son of God, died.

  250. That's what we understand

  251. when we hear that whole text.

  252. That's the narrow door.

  253. Jesus' death on the cross.

  254. What about all the crying and the rejection?

  255. Well, just one thing we have to understand here

  256. before we get to that is,

  257. you know, in our culture,

  258. what we want,

  259. one of the things that Jesus is saying

  260. is that when we think of the narrow door

  261. and tolerance and all of that type of stuff,

  262. you know what we think of?

  263. We think of theologies,

  264. philosophies, ideologies,

  265. sociologies,

  266. anthropologies,

  267. methodologies,

  268. techniques,

  269. rituals,

  270. experience,

  271. emotion,

  272. and forces.

  273. And we think in terms of all of those categories

  274. and Jesus doesn't think in any of those categories.

  275. He talks in terms of a category

  276. that goes right to the heart.

  277. The narrow door is not a theology,

  278. ideology,

  279. methodology,

  280. technology,

  281. ritual,

  282. force,

  283. or emotion.

  284. It's a person.

  285. It's a person.

  286. And people touch our heart.

  287. We can manipulate ideologies,

  288. theologies,

  289. philosophies,

  290. sociologies,

  291. anthropologies,

  292. forces,

  293. techniques,

  294. methodologies,

  295. and rituals.

  296. We can manipulate them.

  297. We can play with them.

  298. And on one level,

  299. we can try to manipulate and play with people,

  300. but a person touches our heart.

  301. And we can accept or reject the presence of a person touching our heart.

  302. And that helps to explain the weeping.

  303. Look at verse 24 again

  304. and read the next few verses.

  305. Strive to enter through the narrow door.

  306. For many,

  307. I tell you,

  308. will seek to enter and will not be able.

  309. When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door,

  310. and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door,

  311. you're knocking on Jesus,

  312. saying,

  313. Lord,

  314. open to us,

  315. and then he will answer you,

  316. I do not know where you come from.

  317. Then you will begin to say,

  318. we ate and drank in your presence and taught in our streets.

  319. But he will say,

  320. I tell you,

  321. I do not know where you come from.

  322. Depart from me,

  323. all you workers of evil.

  324. In that place,

  325. there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  326. When you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God,

  327. but you yourselves cast out and people will come from east and west and from north and south

  328. and recline at table in the kingdom of God.

  329. And behold,

  330. some are last who will be first.

  331. Some are first who will be last.

  332. Excuse me.

  333. Here's the thing.

  334. I'll put it up and then I'll explain it to you.

  335. Next point,

  336. Andrew.

  337. It's a bit of a long point.

  338. And if you,

  339. you know,

  340. you can always go online as of Monday and the points are always online if you want to write them down.

  341. To be saved is to enter through the narrow door.

  342. And it's not just a matter of entering through the narrow door.

  343. It's not just having one experience of Jesus.

  344. That's the imagery there is of being in a kingdom,

  345. of having a banquet,

  346. of being with other people,

  347. of being there with Jesus in this,

  348. in this place.

  349. And so to be saved is,

  350. in a sense,

  351. both to enter through the narrow door and live life as a citizen in the kingdom where Jesus is always present as the Savior and the Lord,

  352. and where growth means he becomes more present.

  353. And I know it's ungrammatical to say to me,

  354. but I threw it in even though it's not very grammatically correct.

  355. to emphasize that,

  356. you know what it is,

  357. is we enter through the narrow door,

  358. and the door is as wide as Jesus dying on the cross.

  359. And we enter,

  360. and being saved means that there's this narrow door,

  361. Jesus dying on the cross,

  362. we enter through him,

  363. and then it's not just that we've had an experience,

  364. and we can forget about it,

  365. and move on with our lives,

  366. into lives of ideologies,

  367. and technologies,

  368. and rituals,

  369. and organizations,

  370. and institutions,

  371. and philosophies,

  372. and anthropologies,

  373. but we actually enter in to begin to live the life as a citizen in a kingdom where Jesus is the Savior,

  374. and he is the Lord,

  375. and he's always present.

  376. And all of my personal growth into the future,

  377. personal growth will now mean Jesus being more present,

  378. not absent,

  379. more present as Savior,

  380. more present as Lord.

  381. This week while I was preparing this sermon,

  382. I was in a suburban coffee shop,

  383. and I overheard a conversation before,

  384. between four pleasant suburban grandmothers.

  385. I'm guessing they're in their early 70s.

  386. I'm so glad you don't know who they are,

  387. because if they're in their 60s,

  388. I would be so red-faced right now,

  389. by guessing that they were in their 70s.

  390. But they seem to be,

  391. I've been in that suburban coffee shop before,

  392. I've seen them there before,

  393. they're obviously regulars,

  394. they're obviously great friends,

  395. and usually wherever they are in the Starbucks,

  396. there's lots of laughter.

  397. And we probably would love them to be our own mother or grandmother,

  398. or love to have them as our neighbors,

  399. and I overheard this conversation.

  400. I heard one of them say,

  401. all of a sudden,

  402. I didn't hear what led up to it,

  403. but all of a sudden,

  404. popped into my ear,

  405. one of them saying to another,

  406. are you going to go to church this Christmas?

  407. And the woman said,

  408. yeah, I think I will.

  409. And the first woman says to the second woman,

  410. well, you never go to church.

  411. And she says,

  412. well, you know,

  413. I like to hedge my bets with the big guy.

  414. You know,

  415. I like to hedge my bets,

  416. you know,

  417. so I,

  418. you know,

  419. I figure if I just sort of go to church every once in a while,

  420. you know,

  421. Christmas is as good a time as any,

  422. I like the music,

  423. and you know,

  424. it's a good time,

  425. and I sort of hedge my bets,

  426. you know,

  427. and the woman number three immediately says,

  428. I don't need any big guy up in the sky telling me what to do,

  429. and looking over my life.

  430. I don't need a big guy in the sky.

  431. And another woman chirped in,

  432. I guess trying to diffuse the tension,

  433. because she was a bit adamant about it,

  434. there was some emotion in it,

  435. and she said,

  436. I don't go to church,

  437. I just try to think good thoughts.

  438. And then the woman who started it all off said,

  439. well,

  440. you know,

  441. I'm Jewish,

  442. and,

  443. and my,

  444. my husband likes going to all these religious festival type things at the

  445. synagogue,

  446. and I like being with my husband,

  447. so I tag along with him,

  448. just so I can spend some time with my husband.

  449. And then the conversation moved on to different things.

  450. Here's the thing.

  451. Those women might say,

  452. I'm not picking on them.

  453. They might say,

  454. Jesus,

  455. I want to get into heaven.

  456. And Jesus says,

  457. you realize that when you come through this door,

  458. you're going to live life as a citizen,

  459. where I am the Savior,

  460. and I am the Lord,

  461. and I'm always present.

  462. And the longer you're in there,

  463. I will only become more present.

  464. And they would say,

  465. that is unacceptable to me.

  466. But I want to come in.

  467. And Jesus would say,

  468. you realize the door is my death upon the cross for you because I love you.

  469. And once you come through that door,

  470. I'll always be present with my nail-scarred hands.

  471. And you won't be able to go anywhere where I'm not there with my nail-scarred hands.

  472. And I'll always be your Lord.

  473. And I'm only going to get closer to you.

  474. And they might very well say,

  475. that is unacceptable.

  476. On Friday,

  477. while I was working on my sermon in a different Starbucks,

  478. I'm sitting there,

  479. and I don't know why this just popped into my head.

  480. Maybe it wasn't the first time,

  481. but there's this really nice young family there.

  482. They're probably in their early 30s.

  483. And they had a little girl who looked like she was three and a half or four,

  484. and a boy who looked like he was around two.

  485. And that and the mom,

  486. you could just tell they sit down and go,

  487. ah.

  488. You know,

  489. I don't know where they had lattes,

  490. or, you know,

  491. Americanos,

  492. or something,

  493. you know,

  494. a pumpkin spice latte,

  495. or something.

  496. And they had some fancy Starbucks breakfast sandwiches.

  497. And the kids each had a glass of ice water and a cookie on a napkin.

  498. You could just sort of tell the parents were just ready to have a bit of a relaxed time with their kid.

  499. And it seemed within moments of them sitting down,

  500. I heard the little boy say,

  501. I want to juice.

  502. Just a quiet little voice.

  503. I want to juice.

  504. And then like 40 seconds later,

  505. I wanted juice.

  506. We bought him,

  507. you have ice water.

  508. You have a cookie.

  509. I wanted juice.

  510. And over the next five minutes,

  511. it went from just a quiet,

  512. I wanted juice,

  513. to a louder,

  514. I wanted juice,

  515. to icy glares and shoves of his sister,

  516. to a squawk,

  517. to eventually,

  518. a full-blown,

  519. red-faced,

  520. back-arched scream.

  521. That not only did everybody in that restaurant here,

  522. but probably everybody within 10 blocks

  523. heard this little kid scream,

  524. I want juice.

  525. And he bursts into tears,

  526. screaming,

  527. with his back arched,

  528. his face red,

  529. full-throated.

  530. Parents try to calm him down.

  531. Eventually,

  532. they realize the only thing you can do

  533. is you pick the kid up under your arm,

  534. and you walk out,

  535. and you go to the car.

  536. I just think,

  537. I'm so glad I'm a grandfather,

  538. not a parent.

  539. And I didn't offer them any parenting advice,

  540. because I was probably the same

  541. when I was a dad,

  542. missing the cues,

  543. meltdown approaching.

  544. But here's the thing,

  545. we all know that that only happens to two-year-olds.

  546. We all know that no adult has meltdowns.

  547. But no adult says,

  548. this is intolerable to me.

  549. And inwardly,

  550. even if they have such good social skills

  551. that they do not stand their back arched,

  552. red-faced,

  553. screaming at the top of their lungs,

  554. inside that's going on.

  555. We know that doesn't happen to any adults.

  556. See,

  557. if you could put up the next point, Andrew,

  558. it breaks the heart of Jesus

  559. that some will say

  560. that the grace to enter such a kingdom

  561. is forever intolerable.

  562. Some will say,

  563. I wanted juice.

  564. I want juice.

  565. And the weeping and the gnashing of teeth

  566. isn't like, you know,

  567. those teenage girl movies,

  568. you know,

  569. where the slightly odd,

  570. misfitted girl

  571. is who's really the one

  572. who's actually smart

  573. and eventually takes their glasses off

  574. and they're pretty

  575. and eventually gets the good-looking guy

  576. or even better,

  577. gets to say no to the good-looking guy

  578. and says yes to the quirky guy

  579. and they're just mean

  580. and the mean girls make the girl.

  581. It's not like that at all.

  582. It's not like that.

  583. That's not what's going on in this text.

  584. It's the two-year-old wanting juice.

  585. And if we just read verse 31 to 35,

  586. you see,

  587. it's when you hear the heart of Jesus

  588. that you understand that that's what's going on.

  589. And listen again.

  590. At that very hour,

  591. some Pharisees came and said to Jesus,

  592. get away from here

  593. for Herod wants to kill you.

  594. And Jesus said to them,

  595. go and tell that fox,

  596. behold,

  597. I cast out demons.

  598. He's healing people,

  599. delivering people,

  600. and perform cures.

  601. He's healing and delivering people

  602. today and tomorrow.

  603. And the third day,

  604. I finish my course.

  605. Nevertheless,

  606. I must go,

  607. my telos,

  608. I must go

  609. my way today and tomorrow

  610. and the day following.

  611. For it cannot be

  612. that a prophet should perish

  613. away from Jerusalem.

  614. Oh,

  615. Jerusalem,

  616. Jerusalem,

  617. the city that kills the prophets

  618. and stones those who are sent to it.

  619. How often would I have gathered

  620. your children together

  621. as a hen gathers her brood

  622. under her wings

  623. and you would not.

  624. Behold,

  625. your house is forsaken

  626. and I tell you,

  627. you will not see me

  628. until you say,

  629. blessed is he

  630. who comes in the name of the Lord.

  631. It breaks the heart of Jesus

  632. that some will say

  633. that the grace

  634. to enter such a kingdom

  635. is forever

  636. intolerable.

  637. You see,

  638. the image

  639. here that we need

  640. is not of a hard-hearted Jesus

  641. casting people away

  642. because they're not smart enough,

  643. haven't gone to church enough,

  644. haven't made enough money,

  645. haven't been a good enough parent,

  646. not the right race,

  647. not the right nationality.

  648. It's not a hard-hearted Jesus

  649. saying that.

  650. You know what it's like?

  651. And maybe you've seen it

  652. like I have sometimes.

  653. It's like maybe a wife

  654. saying to her husband

  655. with tears in her eyes,

  656. I don't want you

  657. to divorce me.

  658. I want to be married to you.

  659. I think we can work it out.

  660. I want to be married to you.

  661. And the woman

  662. has tears in her eyes

  663. and the husband

  664. looks away stony-faced.

  665. It is a parent

  666. to a child

  667. or a child

  668. to the parent.

  669. The parent

  670. saying to the child,

  671. I want to be,

  672. I want,

  673. I just want to love you.

  674. I just want to be your mother.

  675. I just want to be your father.

  676. I just,

  677. I just want to help you.

  678. I'd give anything for you.

  679. And the kid

  680. stony-eyed

  681. looking away

  682. wanting to have

  683. nothing to do with it.

  684. Or the kid

  685. saying to their mom

  686. or their dad,

  687. I just,

  688. I just want to help you.

  689. I just want to love you.

  690. And the parent being stony-eyed

  691. on their course.

  692. And that's what we see

  693. of Jesus.

  694. Because in fact,

  695. and Andrew,

  696. if you could put this

  697. next point up,

  698. here's the thing.

  699. Because some of you might say,

  700. does Jesus know who I am?

  701. Does he know

  702. how bad a parent I've been?

  703. Does he know how,

  704. does he know the things

  705. I've done?

  706. Does he know

  707. how much of a failure

  708. I've been?

  709. Does he know

  710. how much I've been rejected?

  711. He could never

  712. possibly want me.

  713. But this text is saying

  714. that if Jesus dies

  715. on the cross

  716. out of love for you

  717. and that the narrow door

  718. is his death

  719. upon the cross,

  720. that that in fact

  721. is the power of God

  722. that comes from salvation,

  723. that when we put our faith

  724. and trust in him,

  725. that that saves us.

  726. That it's not

  727. our looks,

  728. our abilities,

  729. our accomplishments.

  730. It's nothing like that.

  731. There is,

  732. what is a text?

  733. It,

  734. I cannot be so broken

  735. or so sinful

  736. or so excluded

  737. or so distant

  738. or so hated

  739. or so other

  740. that Jesus

  741. will turn me away

  742. when I come to him

  743. with humble longing.

  744. Blessed is he who comes

  745. in the name of the Lord

  746. with repentance

  747. and faith in him.

  748. No one

  749. is so broken

  750. or so hated

  751. or such a failure.

  752. And I don't have

  753. a slide from it,

  754. but there is no one here

  755. who is so young,

  756. so successful,

  757. so popular,

  758. that you don't need Jesus.

  759. There's no one here

  760. so rich

  761. or powerful

  762. that you don't need

  763. Jesus.

  764. That's the heart

  765. of Jesus.

  766. Jesus knows you.

  767. In fact,

  768. what we see

  769. in this whole thing

  770. is if you could put up

  771. the final,

  772. not the final,

  773. the next point,

  774. Andrew.

  775. See,

  776. here's the way

  777. this text works

  778. on us.

  779. And this is why

  780. we don't understand

  781. the text

  782. because we want

  783. Jesus to answer

  784. an intellectual question,

  785. an anthropological,

  786. sociological,

  787. missiological,

  788. ideological,

  789. cultural,

  790. ritualistic,

  791. energetic,

  792. technique-driven

  793. question.

  794. The question

  795. was asked

  796. of Jesus,

  797. will those

  798. who are saved

  799. be few?

  800. the text

  801. turns everything

  802. around

  803. and Jesus

  804. asks me,

  805. will you

  806. enter

  807. through the narrow

  808. door

  809. and be saved?

  810. You see,

  811. questions of,

  812. not that we can't

  813. answer questions

  814. of philosophy,

  815. I'm not trying

  816. to say that

  817. and there's,

  818. you know,

  819. other types

  820. and this is

  821. a huge part

  822. of the answer

  823. but there's

  824. other things

  825. that can be said.

  826. But Jesus,

  827. you see,

  828. religion and

  829. spirituality

  830. will always

  831. just go

  832. to appearances

  833. and methods

  834. and techniques

  835. and ideas.

  836. Jesus always

  837. goes to the heart.

  838. He goes to the

  839. center of who

  840. we are

  841. in the context

  842. of the reality

  843. and the truth

  844. of the living God.

  845. And so we have

  846. an abstract question

  847. and Jesus

  848. turns it around

  849. and in a sense

  850. when we're opening

  851. the Bible,

  852. the eyes of Jesus

  853. are right there

  854. looking back

  855. at us

  856. and he asks

  857. me a question.

  858. George,

  859. will you enter

  860. through the narrow

  861. door and be saved?

  862. That's the question

  863. before every one

  864. of us here.

  865. Just two very

  866. brief things

  867. in closing

  868. and we'll sort of

  869. return to this

  870. and we'll pray.

  871. There's two other

  872. things for Christ

  873. followers in this text

  874. which are really

  875. important things

  876. for us.

  877. If you could put up

  878. the first,

  879. Andrew.

  880. Jesus is telling

  881. us to go to

  882. every people group

  883. on the planet

  884. and tell them

  885. about him.

  886. Now we can't

  887. manage this

  888. as one congregation.

  889. He's not telling

  890. us as an individual

  891. we can't go to

  892. every people group

  893. but he's telling

  894. us that it's

  895. a constant task

  896. upon churches

  897. that we pray

  898. and do what we

  899. can to go,

  900. to go,

  901. to every people

  902. group on the planet.

  903. That's what it

  904. means about,

  905. you know,

  906. in the kingdom

  907. there's going to

  908. be from north

  909. and south

  910. and east and west

  911. we have a

  912. planet-wide God,

  913. a planet-forming

  914. God,

  915. who calls

  916. a planet-wide

  917. people.

  918. And you know,

  919. while there might

  920. not be fruit

  921. at first,

  922. this whole text

  923. tells us that

  924. there will be

  925. people in every

  926. people group.

  927. There will be

  928. people in every

  929. people group

  930. who will come

  931. to faith in Jesus.

  932. There will.

  933. That's what Jesus

  934. says.

  935. And we're to go.

  936. And that means

  937. we're to go to

  938. the farthest

  939. corners of the

  940. earth,

  941. but we're also

  942. to pray that

  943. every people

  944. group in our

  945. community will

  946. also have people

  947. who will go

  948. to the Muslim

  949. community,

  950. to the atheist

  951. community,

  952. to the intellectual

  953. community,

  954. to the political

  955. community,

  956. to the gay

  957. community,

  958. to the,

  959. every community

  960. without any

  961. exception.

  962. Jesus is telling

  963. us to go to

  964. every people group

  965. on the planet

  966. and tell them

  967. about him.

  968. And we're to give

  969. to that and pray

  970. to that.

  971. That's why we

  972. support missionaries.

  973. That's why,

  974. especially if you

  975. come to the

  976. Tuesday night

  977. prayer meeting,

  978. which I hope

  979. you do sometime,

  980. we pray for

  981. the missionaries.

  982. We pray for

  983. missionaries in

  984. our staff prayer

  985. meeting on a

  986. weekly basis.

  987. We pray for

  988. missionaries.

  989. And one other

  990. thing,

  991. last thing,

  992. Andrew,

  993. Jesus is telling

  994. me to have his

  995. heart for this

  996. city.

  997. Jesus is telling

  998. me to have his

  999. heart for this

  1000. city.

  1001. If I enter into

  1002. a kingdom where

  1003. Jesus is present

  1004. and growth means

  1005. that he becomes

  1006. more present to

  1007. me, and if I

  1008. enter into a

  1009. kingdom where

  1010. Jesus is present

  1011. and he's present

  1012. as my Savior and

  1013. as my Lord, then

  1014. that means that I'm

1015. to try to get the

  1016. heart of Jesus.

  1017. And you know,

  1018. it's so easy for

  1019. us to look at

  1020. Ottawa and think

  1021. there's so many

  1022. things going on in

  1023. Ottawa that are

  1024. far from God,

  1025. that are completely

  1026. opposed to God,

  1027. that are maybe

  1028. hateful to God,

  1029. and it can

  1030. seem as if

  1031. sometimes the

  1032. city has no

  1033. place for Jesus,

  1034. no place for

  1035. God, and to

  1036. take the city's

  1037. own understanding

  1038. of itself.

  1039. And this text is

  1040. calling us to

  1041. have Jesus'

  1042. heart for the

  1043. city, to

  1044. weep over it,

  1045. and to also

  1046. trust that there

  1047. are people still

  1048. unreached within

  1049. this city who are

  1050. to be reached with

  1051. the gospel and who

  1052. will respond.

  1053. God, please

  1054. stand.

  1055. Remember that the

  1056. great question of

  1057. the text is not

  1058. will those who are

  1059. saved be few, that

  1060. the great question of

  1061. the text is will

  1062. you enter through

  1063. the narrow door and

  1064. be saved?

1065. And I just say some

  1066. of us might have

  1067. business that we have

  1068. to make with God

  1069. right now, that some

1070. of us need to say,

1071. and I'm not going to

1072. give you a prayer to

  1073. lead you, and I'm

  1074. just going to say

  1075. that if the Holy

  1076. Spirit is pressing

  1077. upon you, then what

1078. you need to just do

1079. is just say, in a

  1080. sense, Andrew, if

  1081. you could put the

  1082. fifth point back up,

  1083. the question is, will

  1084. those who are saved

  1085. be few?

1086. If you could put that

  1087. back up, that would

  1088. be great, very

  1089. helpful.

1090. Maybe for some of us

  1091. here, the Holy Spirit

  1092. is impringing on your

  1093. heart right now, and

1094. all you have to do is

  1095. say, yes, Jesus, I

  1096. want to enter through

1097. the narrow door and be

  1098. saved.

  1099. Now, I understand those

  1100. other things that

  1101. you said, that George

1102. said is in the text.

1103. I see it in the text.

  1104. I understand that it's

1105. not just a moment that

1106. this is for life, and

  1107. it's going to mean I'm

  1108. going to make some

  1109. changes, you're going

1110. to make changes in me,

1111. but yes, I feel the

  1112. Holy Spirit pressing

1113. upon me, and yes, I

  1114. want to enter that

  1115. narrow door and be

  1116. saved.

1117. And for all of us who

  1118. are Christ followers, the

  1119. Holy Spirit is impinging

  1120. on our hearts.

1121. For some of us, it

1122. might be that we have

  1123. to confess before God

1124. that we are taking the

  1125. city's definition of

  1126. itself, that we're

  1127. hating the city, or

  1128. that we're afraid of

1129. the city, and that we

  1130. shouldn't be afraid of

1131. the city or hate the

1132. city, but ask for the

  1133. heart of Jesus towards

  1134. our city.

  1135. Or maybe he's calling

1136. us to go to some

  1137. people group with prayer

1138. to bring Jesus to them.

1139. Or maybe it's just that

1140. we need to have Jesus be

  1141. more present to us.

1142. But the Holy Spirit is

  1143. impinging on your heart,

1144. and I call you, invite

1145. you, exhort you, urge you

1146. to listen to that voice

1147. of the Holy Spirit in

1148. your life and call it to

1149. God in prayer today, to

  1150. do business with God

  1151. before you leave.

1152. Let's bow our heads in

  1153. prayer.

1154. Father, we know that you

  1155. are touching many hearts

  1156. here this morning, and

  1157. Father, I don't know the

1158. work that you're doing in

  1159. hearts.

  1160. I know the work that you're

  1161. doing in mine.

1162. Father, I give you thanks

1163. and praise that you know

1164. our hearts, that you know

1165. the center of who we are,

1166. that you know our deepest

1167. needs, that you know what

1168. you are pressing on us at

  1169. this point in time.

1170. And Father, we invite, we

  1171. give you permission, we

1172. urge, we call out to you,

1173. Father, that you would pour

1174. out your Holy Spirit upon

1175. us at our point of deepest

  1176. need, that that pressing

1177. upon us by your Holy Spirit,

1178. that that would bear much

1179. fruit, that for those of us

1180. who have never given or

  1181. entered that narrow door,

1182. that we, they would enter

1183. that narrow door today and

  1184. be saved.

1185. For all of us, Father, is

1186. whether it's the heart for

1187. the city or whatever it is,

1188. Father, do that work within

1189. us all to your glory.

  1190. Father, make us disciples

  1191. of Jesus.

1192. Make us disciples gripped by

1193. the gospel, living for your

  1194. glory.

1195. Father, pour out your Holy

1196. Spirit upon us and form us

1197. and mold us into a prayerful

1198. Bible teaching church with a

1199. heart for this city and a

  1200. heart for the world.

1201. And this we ask in the name

1202. of Jesus, your Son and our

  1203. Savior.

  1204. Amen.
