  1. Okay, how we doing?

  2. After that passage, really good?

  3. So, you know, I'm like, oh my gosh, you know, I was at this wedding reception last night too,

  4. and about 10.30 I've been praying through this sermon and the implications of it,

  5. and I was like, what am I doing teaching on 1 Corinthians 5?

  6. It's craziness.

  7. Usually people skip these passages.

  8. These are kind of like the hot potato passages in Scripture.

  9. We're about to hit a whole bunch of hot potatoes.

  10. I mean serious hot potatoes in Scripture and theology,

  11. and I have realized over the years of being married to my wife

  12. that I'm not as good of a communicator as I thought I was.

  13. And so I'm sure that I might bother some of you in my communication.

  14. I'm sure and hopefully that Scripture will bother you also.

  15. And so this is just a beginning, an introduction.

  16. Hopefully you will continue to discuss these things in your community group

  17. and talk to each other.

  18. And if I say something that really offends you, please come up and talk to me

  19. because, again, these are huge topics, right?

  20. And so you're studying these and you're reading these,

  21. and we're going to talk for about 30 minutes.

  22. And I've been thinking about this, you know, for weeks

  23. and trying to figure out what's going on here and how do we do this

  24. and how do we teach this well.

  25. And so I think maybe I should just start off by asking,

  26. is there anybody in here sleeping with their dad's mom, dad's wife?

  27. Anybody?

  28. Okay, maybe we should just close the sermon then and say amen and we can go home

  29. because we don't want to think about this because it's too crazy.

  30. But then I started thinking about verse 11.

  31. Is there anybody in here who's a Christian

  32. and they're struggling with pornography or immorality?

  33. Are there anybody in here who's a believer and they're struggling with greed and covetous?

  34. Or is there anybody in here who's struggling with idolatry,

  35. that we've made idols and we've worshipped them instead of God?

  36. Is there any of us in here who struggle with drinking too much?

  37. Is there anybody in here who struggles with swindling

  38. and being greedy and vicious with their words?

  39. And is there anybody in here who's a reviler, that they gossip,

  40. they use their words abusively to people and they hurt people,

  41. especially those above them in leadership or their spouses?

  42. Are there any of us in here struggling with those things?

  43. And I realized that I have to say yes to many of these things.

  44. You know, and I wanted to talk about that today.

  45. What does it look like for us as a church to go on a journey?

  46. When we started this church, we prayed that we'd be a church

  47. that would open up and share everything with everybody

  48. and that we would not hold things back,

  49. realizing that if we keep things in the dark,

  50. in our soul, in our brain, and in our heart,

  51. that Satan destroys us, right?

  52. So one of the things we pray about as staff and elders all the time

  53. is that we would be a church that would realize that

  54. and realize that we've been hiding in the dark too long

  55. and it's time to bring these things into the light

  56. and let God and the Holy Spirit heal us from these things.

  57. And so I wanted to start to talk about this passage

  58. by sharing a story that I remember really well.

  59. It was October 25, 2010.

  60. And the reason I remember that is only two weeks after we started Watermark.

  61. And the story and the true story, what happened was that

  62. in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sumatra,

  63. there was this massive earthquake that hit

  64. and it rumbled everybody about 9.45 at night.

  65. And this earthquake triggered this massive tsunami

  66. that just kept building up and building up.

  67. And it started pushing and it started heading towards these

  68. Mitanawe Islands and towards these areas.

  69. But this wasn't the first time the earthquake had happened.

  70. And so in 2004, this huge earthquake hit and caused a tsunami

  71. and it wiped out half of India.

  72. And so what they did is they placed these buoys, these NOAA buoys,

  73. these dark buoys all around the islands to act as a warning sign.

  74. And so that whenever the water level went up,

  75. these buoys would go, you know, alert, alert, alert.

  76. And they would send out this warning to all the villages and all the islands.

  77. And so people would be aware that this huge wall of water is coming

  78. and we need to get away.

  79. And so this water of wall is coming.

  80. But over time, those buoys that they had placed in there in 2004,

  81. it's, you know, it's 2010 now, they were just neglected.

  82. I mean, no one checked up on them.

  83. No one bothered to check them out and make sure they were functioning properly.

  84. No one tested them.

  85. No one even went out and said, hey, are they still there?

  86. They just assumed that these buoys were still there

  87. and they were going to be protected by it.

  88. And when this big wave of water hit these buoys,

  89. instead of saying, alert, alert, alert, nothing happened.

  90. I mean, there was no warning and the people were sleeping

  91. and this huge tsunami slams these islands.

  92. And in an instant, 4,000 homes are destroyed

  93. and 20,000 people's lives are upturned

  94. and hundreds of people are washed out to the sea,

  95. all because this system that they had designed and put in place

  96. didn't function properly because we neglected it

  97. and we didn't talk about it.

  98. We didn't discuss it amongst ourselves.

  99. It's terrifying, isn't it?

  100. It's terrifying to think if you were one of those people

  101. and you're thinking that you were going to go to sleep

  102. and you were safe because people were taking care of you

  103. and in an instant, you're wiped out.

  104. And that's kind of what's going on in this church in Corinth.

  105. We've been studying about this church in Corinth

  106. and this church started in this city that is very much like Hong Kong.

  107. It's all about power and it's all about money

  108. and it's all about education and it's all about relationships

  109. and it's all about idols and it's all about image.

  110. I don't know if you've realized it, but in Hong Kong it doesn't really matter

  111. how well you're doing.

  112. It just matters that you look like you're doing well, right?

  113. And that's what we struggle with in the church all the time

  114. because we come in and we wear these masks

  115. and it looks like we're doing well, but inside in our soul we're not doing well.

  116. We're really getting beat up by these tsunamis

  117. and this is what's happening to this church in Corinth.

  118. These tsunamis are hitting

  119. and what we're going to see is the problem that it causes is

  120. that people just become arrogant.

  121. The people become prideful and they've become just like their city, the church.

  122. This small group of 150 people who've been struggling and fighting

  123. to walk with the Lord and to be good businessmen

  124. and to be good husbands and to be good wives and be good children.

  125. They've just become complacent and they've become prideful

  126. and they've just stopped thinking about what it means to walk with God

  127. and instead of having this protective barrier of buoys

  128. around their families and their church and their community,

  129. these things have been wiped away

  130. and now their lives and their hearts and their families

  131. and their churches are at risk.

  132. I mean, there's this huge disconnect in these people's lives.

  133. They don't realize what is going on and what the church is all about

  134. and they've separated their spiritual life from their physical life.

  135. Have you ever done that?

  136. I struggle with that often that we separate what we do with who we are.

  137. We forget what the church is about.

  138. We just come in and most of us struggle with thinking about

  139. whether the church is just a club that we come on Sunday

  140. and that we leave.

  141. And we struggle with this idea of sin entering into our midst

  142. and what does it look like and why we're here as God's people.

  143. What do we do with these things as we get buffeted by these waters

  144. that continually beat us and beat us and beat us?

  145. I mean, there's a lot of stories in the Old Testament

  146. about this happening to God's people.

  147. I was reading one rabbi's commentary

  148. and I know you're going to think I'm incredibly boring.

  149. I told one of the staff that.

  150. He goes, well, you got a lot of free time.

  151. And I was reading this commentary about this guy

  152. talking about these Old Testament stories

  153. and he was talking about the community of God and the people.

  154. And he said that, you know, most people don't understand

  155. what the community of God is all about.

  156. And he says it's kind of like you're on this boat.

  157. And you're on this boat that's going on this journey.

  158. And all of a sudden you turn over and you look down

  159. and there's this guy on this wooden boat

  160. and he's drilling this hole underneath his bed.

  161. And he's drilling it through the wood of the boat.

  162. And you look at him and you say, what are you doing?

  163. He goes, don't worry about it.

  164. It's just my area.

  165. It's just my area.

  166. It's not going to affect everybody else.

  167. It's just me.

  168. It's just me.

  169. It's my area.

  170. And this rabbi said that's how we think of the community

  171. and that's how we think of sin in our lives.

  172. We think that we can just drill holes in the bottom of the boat

  173. and it's not going to affect anybody.

  174. It's just going to affect us.

  175. But what he says is that you and I are here

  176. and we're in this journey.

  177. If you're God's people, you're in a ship

  178. and you're on this journey.

  179. And everything you do affects everybody in God's family.

  180. I mean, I think we don't.

  181. And I struggle with this, right?

  182. We come in and we don't realize that the person next to you

  183. and the person next to you,

  184. these are people that are going to be in heaven with you.

  185. You don't realize that the person next to you

  186. and the person next to you,

  187. they might need the gifts, the talents, the care, the love,

  188. the personality that you have.

  189. And if you just get up and leave

  190. and never communicate with people or never serve,

  191. then that means that that person next to you

  192. and the person next to you,

  193. they're worse off

  194. because the hand or the leg or the foot

  195. just walked out the door

  196. and they really need a hand or a leg or a foot

  197. or a heart

  198. or an ear.

  199. And the story says that we don't realize it

  200. because we don't realize also

  201. that we're sitting in here in this community

  202. and that we actually need the person beside us.

  203. And that person beside us

  204. might be the person that we need to talk to

  205. because we're really struggling with something.

  206. They might be a little further along

  207. in their journey in business

  208. and in marriage and family and singleness

  209. and we're just getting beat up by the storms

  210. over and over and over

  211. and we get up and we leave

  212. and we don't realize that the answer to this

  213. is what God has said all along

  214. and the answer is the church

  215. and the community and the people of God.

  216. But we don't realize that

  217. and so we teach our kids

  218. that it's okay not to value those things

  219. and we might not say it

  220. but we do it by our actions and our words

  221. and so our kids learn

  222. and so what we do

  223. is we pass on this crippledness

  224. from our generation

  225. to our kids' generation

  226. to the next generation.

  227. But you and I

  228. are meant to be in this ship together

  229. and we're moving in this direction

  230. and whatever we do

  231. affects everybody else.

  232. Does that make any sense whatsoever?

  233. I hope I'm not getting too heavy

  234. but for me it's just a burden

  235. because I feel like I struggle with this a lot

  236. and the people of Corinth struggle with that a lot too.

  237. There were things going on in their church

  238. that were out of control

  239. and in fact

  240. the problem in this passage is intense

  241. and it's leaven, it's sin

  242. and the idea about leaven

  243. is that when you put the leaven

  244. in the dough

  245. you put the yeast in the dough

  246. it permeates everything.

  247. Okay, so I have a confession to make.

  248. I've tried to stop drinking Diet Coke.

  249. There's something in me

  250. I just, okay

  251. so I went to Christina's parents' mom's funeral

  252. and there was something in me

  253. like you need to just cut down

  254. and stop it

  255. so I've tried to stop drinking Diet Coke

  256. and so I've been drinking tea instead

  257. and so I've been boiling tea

  258. and making tea

  259. and drinking tea like a madman

  260. because I'm addicted to caffeine

  261. I'm sure

  262. and the thing I've learned about

  263. the tea pot

  264. and the kettle

  265. is if I don't boil it well enough

  266. or if I leave it sitting

  267. just for a little while

  268. that the sugar in it

  269. starts to ferment

  270. and if I don't handle it just right

  271. I mean I can go out of the room

  272. and studying

  273. and I can come back

  274. in an hour and a half

  275. and the tea starts to get cloudy.

  276. Have you ever noticed that?

  277. And then if I just leave it

  278. for like three hours

  279. that the tea is undrinkable, right?

  280. It's like in some of those restaurants

  281. you're going in

  282. and you take a drink of tea

  283. and you're like

  284. oh wow this is really bad

  285. you need to clean out the leaven

  286. out of this thing

  287. and the guy goes what?

  288. And but it's

  289. but that's how sin affects us, right?

  290. And that's what goes on

  291. and that's what's happening

  292. in the church

  293. because we forgot

  294. what the church is about

  295. we forgot that we're God's people

  296. we forgot we're hands and feet

  297. and we're in a ship

  298. and everything we do

  299. affects each other

  300. and the sin that we do

  301. affects each other

  302. and so Paul writes this letter

  303. and it's not the first letter

  304. he wrote to this church

  305. and this church is struggling

  306. with this guy

  307. and he is actually

  308. he's sleeping

  309. he's shacking up

  310. with his dad's wife

  311. and so it's not his

  312. probably his mom

  313. but it's his dad's wife

  314. and we know that it's

  315. a continual thing

  316. that it's happening

  317. over and over

  318. because Paul wrote about it

  319. in a letter that we don't have

  320. maybe a year or two before

  321. and so he's readdressing it

  322. here again

  323. and the thing that surprises him

  324. as he talks about this

  325. is that this sin

  326. isn't even what the Romans

  327. would do

  328. if you read Roman law

  329. and you read the Greek law

  330. this thing is like

  331. out of control

  332. most Greeks and Romans

  333. they believed in everything else

  334. and everything else is good

  335. but what you don't do

  336. is you don't sleep

  337. with your dad's wife

  338. because that's

  339. that's like the Oedipus syndrome

  340. right

  341. Oedipus the boy

  342. who falls in love

  343. with his mom

  344. and the Greeks

  345. have a whole tragedy

  346. about that

  347. and so you just don't

  348. do that

  349. but they were doing that here

  350. and Paul is just

  351. freaking out over that

  352. and the biggest thing

  353. that concerns Paul

  354. in verse 2

  355. is not that this guy

  356. is doing it

  357. but the biggest thing

  358. that concerns Paul

  359. is that people

  360. aren't doing anything about it

  361. and so they just look at him

  362. and they kind of smile

  363. maybe they say things like

  364. well you know

  365. that's a personal matter

  366. maybe we shouldn't be

  367. too involved

  368. or you know

  369. this is just the age of tolerance

  370. we need to be tolerant

  371. and we don't want to be

  372. intolerant

  373. or intolerant

  374. or we don't want to be harsh

  375. we don't want to be mean

  376. maybe if we say something to him

  377. and a lot of commentators

  378. think that this guy

  379. was probably a very wealthy person

  380. in the church

  381. that he's probably

  382. a very well to do person

  383. that he was donating

  384. a lot of money to the church

  385. the church might have

  386. even been meeting

  387. in his home

  388. and so there's a sense

  389. that they didn't

  390. they were afraid

  391. to say anything

  392. because they would lose

  393. this money from this patron

  394. and so instead

  395. they let this yeast

  396. just continue in his heart

  397. and it just became deferment

  398. and get more difficult

  399. and more difficult

  400. and people in the church

  401. were saying

  402. you know it's grace

  403. and God has freed us

  404. and Christ has freed us

  405. and who cares about

  406. what we do sexually

  407. and it's okay

  408. we can do anything

  409. and Paul's looking at this

  410. and he goes

  411. what are you doing

  412. this guy's been drilling holes

  413. in the bottom of the boat

  414. for two years

  415. and you haven't done

  416. anything about it

  417. you gotta do something

  418. about it guys

  419. because it's not good

  420. I mean in the Hebrew culture

  421. you know what they would have done

  422. they would have taken

  423. the guy and the girl

  424. and taken them outside the city

  425. and they would have

  426. stoned them to death

  427. I mean it would have

  428. happened just like that

  429. there wouldn't have been

  430. no discussion over the sin

  431. and the blatantness of it

  432. but as Christians

  433. we struggle with that

  434. we don't know

  435. what to do

  436. and Paul was talking to them

  437. and we struggle with this idea

  438. well that's not loving

  439. because Jesus wouldn't do that

  440. right

  441. but Jesus

  442. did do that

  443. and it's my fault

  444. because I didn't put it

  445. in your bulletin

  446. but I put Matthew 7

  447. which talks about

  448. before we go to talk to people

  449. we guard our hearts

  450. we ask our hearts

  451. we take the logs out of our eye

  452. before we talk to our brother

  453. but in Matthew 18

  454. Jesus lays out

  455. these very specific

  456. strict guidelines

  457. for how we deal

  458. with people in sin

  459. and so I'm going to read it to you

  460. this is what he says

  461. if your brother sins

  462. and go and reprove him

  463. in private

  464. and if he listens to you

  465. you have won a brother

  466. and you just mark over that

  467. love

  468. because that's what love is

  469. he goes

  470. but if he doesn't listen to you

  471. take one or two more with you

  472. so that by the mouth

  473. of two or three witnesses

  474. every fact may be confirmed

  475. love

  476. and if he refuses

  477. to listen to them then

  478. tell it to the church

  479. and if he refuses

  480. to listen even to the church

  481. then let him be

  482. as a Gentile

  483. sorry tax guys

  484. but as a tax gatherer

  485. that's the worst thing

  486. you could be

  487. in Jesus' day

  488. was a tax gatherer

  489. IRS

  490. Ed

  491. back there

  492. you had the worst profession

  493. in Jesus' day

  494. sorry about that buddy

  495. anyway

  496. but he

  497. Jesus said really clearly

  498. hey this is

  499. this is what we do

  500. and this is how we treat people

  501. and this is what we do

  502. when our brother sins

  503. and we follow these rules

  504. and we follow this pattern

  505. and if we don't do that

  506. we don't love them

  507. because he says

  508. the problem is

  509. that with Christians

  510. we see something happening

  511. in a person's life

  512. we see a person walking around

  513. and they have a booger

  514. hanging right on their nose

  515. right here

  516. and we think

  517. if we don't say anything

  518. about the booger right there

  519. that the booger will go away

  520. am I freaking you out

  521. little BT

  522. and so there's

  523. little BT hanging there

  524. and so

  525. but you're not saying anything

  526. to the people

  527. it's just hanging on there

  528. and that person's walking around

  529. and they have a booger

  530. hanging on their nose

  531. and we look at those people

  532. and we say

  533. wow we love them so much

  534. we're not going to tell them

  535. that there's a booger

  536. hanging out their nose

  537. but Jesus

  538. but Paul says no

  539. and he says

  540. the problem with the church

  541. is that by the time

  542. we get to say something

  543. to somebody

  544. all the holes

  545. have been drilled

  546. in the bottom of the bolt

  547. all the damage

  548. is done

  549. and the person's heart

  550. who's struggling

  551. with the sin

  552. their heart

  553. has become so hard

  554. because no one's

  555. loved them enough

  556. to say to them

  557. at an early age

  558. dude you have a booger

  559. hanging out of your nose

  560. but they just walked around

  561. for years

  562. with a booger

  563. hanging out of their nose

  564. and I'm probably

  565. going to stop right now

  566. because my wife's

  567. going to talk to me

  568. about that afterwards

  569. but it's kind of like cancer

  570. right

  571. we don't want to go

  572. to the doctor

  573. because we're afraid

  574. he's going to tell us

  575. we have cancer

  576. and that's crazy right

  577. you think you have cancer

  578. you go to the doctor

  579. so he can tell you

  580. and so you can get it fixed

  581. but most of us

  582. live in the church

  583. and we just ignore

  584. those signs

  585. and those things happening

  586. and so Paul says

  587. you know I can't ignore it

  588. anymore

  589. because I've been talking

  590. to this guy

  591. and we've gone through

  592. this process

  593. and he says

  594. this is what I'm going to do

  595. because it seems like

  596. they're waiting for him

  597. to come make a decision

  598. and Paul says

  599. you make the decision

  600. even though I'm not there yet

  601. because I'm coming

  602. but this is what

  603. I'm going to tell you

  604. we're going to do

  605. we're going to push

  606. this guy outside

  607. because we love him

  608. because if we don't

  609. push him outside

  610. he's going to be destroyed

  611. and if we don't

  612. push him outside

  613. he's going to not only

  614. destroy himself

  615. but he's going to destroy

  616. the people around him

  617. and if he don't push

  618. him outside

  619. he's not going only

  620. destroy himself

  621. and the people around him

  622. he's also going to destroy

  623. the name of Christ.

  624. That's love.

  625. And so Paul says, make him out, push him out there,

  626. give his body over to Satan.

  627. It's very strong words in verse 5.

  628. There's a lot of controversy over what it means,

  629. but what it basically means is you're in this boat,

  630. and this guy's acting up, and you stop at the next island,

  631. and you drop the guy off at the island,

  632. and you keep sailing.

  633. You put him out into the world.

  634. Sometimes we don't do that because we want to love people,

  635. but what happens when we keep people in the church

  636. is that they just get into this atmosphere,

  637. and there's sin in their life, and things are eating their lunch,

  638. and they're getting hit by tsunamis,

  639. but they're in other Christians,

  640. and so they don't ever think about it.

  641. They don't take it as a serious thing.

  642. And so sometimes you can do really well in a church surviving, right,

  643. even when you're struggling with things.

  644. And that's why people, when they get kicked out of churches

  645. or when their sin gets found out,

  646. they go to other churches right away

  647. because they realize that the church is this safe place

  648. because there's grace and there's love,

  649. and they can just keep doing what they've always been doing,

  650. drilling holes in the bottom of the boat.

  651. And Paul says, no.

  652. I mean, if you love that guy, you go to him.

  653. If you love that girl, you go to him,

  654. and you tell them what's going on

  655. because their soul's at stake, their heart's at stake.

  656. It's going to hurt them.

  657. The buoys are going off all around them,

  658. and you're seeing those buoys flashing,

  659. but you're not telling them about those buoys.

  660. And so they're just going to get drowned and drowned and drowned.

  661. He goes on and he says,

  662. he gives three reasons why we, as God's people,

  663. we must talk to each other about this sin.

  664. We must allow people to speak to us and talk about these things.

  665. And the first reason he gives is in verse 5,

  666. he says it's for that person, for their soul.

  667. That if you don't love that person enough to talk about

  668. the struggles they're having and their lives they're having.

  669. And again, I'm not talking about just sin, right?

  670. I'm not saying, okay, the guy messed up,

  671. you saw him yelling at his wife.

  672. But you're seeing this pattern of things happening in people's lives,

  673. and you love that person enough,

  674. you want to go to them and talk about,

  675. yeah, I see this pattern happening.

  676. What's going on?

  677. How are you doing?

  678. Are there holes being driven in your boat?

  679. Are you drowning?

  680. Do you need help?

  681. How can I help you?

  682. You know, one of the things I think

  683. why the church doesn't want to talk about these things,

  684. about disappointing people and sin and things like that,

  685. it's because we also don't do a very good job

  686. when people need us, do we?

  687. I mean, there's people sitting right beside you

  688. who need you.

  689. And they're struggling.

  690. They need you to pray for them.

  691. They need you to ask how they're doing.

  692. They need you sometimes to give them money

  693. because they can't make it to the next paycheck.

  694. They need you to help them with their kids.

  695. They need you to a billion different things

  696. that we all have needs as a body and as a family.

  697. And sometimes as a church,

  698. we just don't do very well with that, do we?

  699. I mean, I remember when my mom was going through a divorce,

  700. my dad left our family, you know.

  701. All the guys in the church, the elders and the leaders,

  702. when a divorced woman comes walking in the house,

  703. man, they'd step away and get away from her.

  704. They didn't want to come and minister to her and help her.

  705. And a lot of us do that.

  706. I do that, guys.

  707. We're so busy.

  708. We're so focused on our own worlds and our kingdoms.

  709. And there's people around who are drowning.

  710. And so if we have a hard time encouraging people

  711. when they need it,

  712. for sure we're going to have a hard time encouraging people

  713. when there's sin in their life

  714. and they're drowning and they're struggling.

  715. And so Paul says we do it for that person

  716. because we want to save them.

  717. And we're hoping that as they go forth into the world

  718. and Satan beats them up

  719. and they look at what they're going on,

  720. that there's this wake-up call

  721. and they wake up and go,

  722. what have I done?

  723. Where have I left?

  724. You know that most of the men I counsel

  725. who have extramarital affairs with their wives

  726. and they leave their families,

  727. within three months,

  728. there's this huge sense of regret for doing it.

  729. Because it's almost like they've woken up

  730. and they've realized what they've done,

  731. what they've given away,

  732. the choices they've made,

  733. and there's this huge sense of regret.

  734. And they've had this wake-up call.

  735. And that's kind of what Paul's talking about here.

  736. That when you put people outside of the church

  737. after this process that has gone through,

  738. that there's this wake-up call

  739. and that people see,

  740. what have I done?

  741. And the Holy Spirit starts to soften their heart

  742. and they come back.

  743. Now the amazing thing about this guy

  744. is that eventually the church does this.

  745. And in 2 Corinthians 2,

  746. we read about this guy coming back

  747. into the church family.

  748. But it's taken them a long time

  749. and as they've done it,

  750. the damage has been done.

  751. The second reason we do it,

  752. Paul says is found in verses 3 through 8.

  753. It's this idea of leaven

  754. and the sin coming into our lives.

  755. And basically what he says is that

  756. if you don't remove people who struggle overly

  757. and they don't have any desire to get better,

  758. they don't have any desire to get fixed,

  759. that this sin, this leaven,

  760. goes into everything.

  761. It affects everybody.

  762. And you know that.

  763. If you have a really bad performer in your work,

  764. they have a terrible attitude,

  765. do you leave them in your workplace?

  766. I mean, you don't, do you?

  767. Because if you do,

  768. then everybody's going to start grumbling.

  769. Everybody's going to be angry, right?

  770. If you're on a sports team

  771. and you have one selfish player,

  772. you don't leave that selfish player

  773. on your sports team.

  774. Because that leaven, that sin,

  775. that disgruntledness spreads out into everything

  776. and it affects everything.

  777. And Paul's saying as Christians,

  778. one of the reasons we deal with sin,

  779. one of the reasons we talk to people,

  780. one of the reasons that we might ultimately

  781. have to remove people from church

  782. for a period of time.

  783. And again, the heart is that they always repent.

  784. They always come back.

  785. But one of the reasons we do that

  786. is because the sin in their life

  787. affects everybody.

  788. And it will start to tear up the church.

  789. And then after a while,

  790. everybody's going to start drilling holes

  791. in the bottom of the church.

  792. And the boat is going to start to sink

  793. because everybody has a bad attitude.

  794. And it's happened throughout

  795. the history of the church.

  796. And there's a lot of stories about it in the Bible.

  797. There's a lot of stories about people who said,

  798. this is my sin, it's only going to affect me.

  799. And they go out and they do it

  800. and it decimates the whole family of God.

  801. David did it.

  802. Moses did it.

  803. There's a story after story

  804. of people who think it's just my sin,

  805. it's just me.

  806. But what we realize is that we're in the same boat

  807. and everything affects it.

  808. And the reason we don't think that

  809. is because we're prideful.

  810. We've stopped listening to God's spirit.

  811. The final reason that Paul says,

  812. we have to do it, we must do it,

  813. we must let go of these people,

  814. we have to deal with these things.

  815. And he talks about some serious things there.

  816. When you go back to verse 11,

  817. you look at that, he's talking about,

  818. hey, if there's people who are dealing

  819. with sexuality, sensuality,

  820. they're struggling with pornography,

  821. prostitution, extramarital affairs.

  822. If they're, and you know,

  823. what I've come to learn is,

  824. it's not bad to struggle with these things.

  825. I mean, we struggle with these things.

  826. We're all broken, we're all sinful.

  827. The problem comes is when we stop

  828. struggling with these things.

  829. The problem comes when we start saying,

  830. that's okay, because God's going to forgive me.

  831. Well, that's okay if I do this,

  832. because it's going to be okay,

  833. because God's going to forgive me.

  834. And that's where the sin starts to grow

  835. and starts to multiply

  836. and starts to affect everybody.

  837. And Paul says, you have to be careful of that.

  838. And he finally says,

  839. and the last thing he says is,

  840. the number one reason,

  841. I think the number one reason

  842. we deal with sin and issues in our life,

  843. the reasons we put up these buoys

  844. in our community group,

  845. and we put up these buoys

  846. around our relationships,

  847. and our marriage,

  848. and around our church,

  849. and these buoys are called community.

  850. And these buoys are called elders.

  851. And these buoys are called fellowship.

  852. And these buoys are called the word of God.

  853. And Sunday gathering,

  854. and wherever else you gather,

  855. and prayer,

  856. and all these buoys we put around ourselves

  857. to protect ourselves.

  858. And Paul says that when the person

  859. finally steps out from those buoys,

  860. the number one reason we talk to them

  861. about these things is that

  862. their sin,

  863. their sin,

  864. and I know people hate to use that word today,

  865. their brokenness,

  866. they're not doing what God has called them to do,

  867. that their sin not only affects them,

  868. and not only affects the church,

  869. but it affects everybody.

  870. I mean, people who are not Christians now

  871. look at the church,

  872. and they see that this church

  873. is allowing a guy who's sleeping with his dad's wife

  874. into the service.

  875. People don't want to go to church anymore.

  876. I mean, how would you feel

  877. if you're sitting right next to somebody

  878. and they swindle you out of millions of dollars?

  879. And the church continues to allow them to do that.

  880. How would you do in your communion time

  881. when you're sitting down

  882. and the person next to you

  883. has stolen your wife away,

  884. or your husband away,

  885. or your boyfriend away?

  886. How would you do

  887. if you know that that person next to you

  888. is totally unethical?

  889. And the elders have looked at it

  890. and they've just kind of smiled

  891. and go, yeah, it's okay,

  892. but we're a different type of church.

  893. We're not going to talk about those things.

  894. What would that do

  895. to your feeling about the church?

  896. What would that do

  897. to your feeling about God?

  898. I have many friends

  899. who don't come to church

  900. because of the way their friends

  901. acted to them as Christians.

  902. And what they say to me is,

  903. well, you know,

  904. they're acting no differently

  905. than my friends.

  906. The only difference is

  907. they use church as a cover

  908. for their lives.

  909. And Paul says,

  910. if we don't deal with these things,

  911. Christ is hurt.

  912. And the body of Christ

  913. is made the less.

  914. I'm not talking about sinlessness.

  915. And I'm not talking about perfection.

  916. And I'm not talking about

  917. never stumbling.

  918. Because if you know me,

  919. you know that I stumble.

  920. We all stumble.

  921. All the elders,

  922. all the leaders.

  923. Watermark is a place

  924. for broken and sinful people

  925. in God's word,

  926. the gospel.

  927. But what I'm talking about

  928. is people who sin

  929. and then they don't repent.

  930. People who sin

  931. and don't ask for forgiveness.

  932. People who sin

  933. and hurt people

  934. and don't make things right.

  935. People who sin

  936. and say,

  937. yeah, I understand that,

  938. but they just keep doing it

  939. over and over and over.

  940. That's what he's talking about here.

  941. And he's saying,

  942. we need each other.

  943. I need people in my life

  944. who care enough about me

  945. to come alongside

  946. and say,

  947. how are you doing

  948. in these areas?

  949. And you need people

  950. in your life

  951. who care enough about you

  952. to come alongside with you

  953. and ask you,

  954. how are you doing

  955. and what kind of holes

  956. are you drilling

  957. in the bottom of the boat lately?

  958. And are your buoys connected?

  959. And how are the warning signals

  960. happening in your life?

  961. But the church in Corinth,

  962. they didn't listen.

  963. And so because of that,

  964. God's name was made worse

  965. and things were hurt.

  966. And so Paul is writing this letter

  967. and he's urging them

  968. and he's urging you

  969. and he's urging all of us

  970. to take church seriously.

  971. To take sin seriously.

  972. To take loving

  973. your brothers and sisters

  974. next to you

  975. seriously.

  976. You guys don't understand

  977. and I don't understand

  978. but what we have here,

  979. what you have

  980. and the people around you

  981. is God's gift to you

  982. while you're on this journey.

  983. And the question is,

  984. how are we going to use this gift

  985. and how are we going to build this gift

  986. and how are we going to make

  987. this gift stronger?

  988. Does that make sense?

  989. We need to hear this guys

  990. because there are waves

  991. that are going to hit you this week

  992. and they're going to mow you over.

  993. And you might get up

  994. and reset those buoys

  995. but you might not.

  996. And you might let those waves

  997. just keep drowning you

  998. and drowning you

  999. and if you don't have somebody

  1000. in your life

1001. who's going to come alongside of you

1002. and loves you enough to say,

  1003. how are you doing?

  1004. What's going on?

1005. How can I pray for you?

1006. How can I help you?

1007. If you don't have people

1008. in your life like that,

1009. you're going to be lost.

1010. And in the same way,

1011. if you're not one of those people,

1012. if you're not one of those people

1013. who come alongside of people

1014. and you're not one of those people

  1015. who are helping them

  1016. patch up those holes

1017. as quick as they drill it,

1018. you're trying to patch them back up

1019. and you're trying to help them

  1020. understand what it's doing

  1021. to the whole community.

1022. If you're not one of those people,

  1023. then you're not being

1024. who God meant for you to be.

1025. And the church is the less.

1026. And God is the less.

1027. God's people are the less.

1028. So how are your sin buoys?

1029. What are the things in your life

  1030. that warn you?

  1031. Alert, alert, alert.

1032. I want to end with three questions

  1033. or three thoughts

1034. that have been going through my mind

  1035. these last couple weeks.

1036. The first one is this.

1037. is there someone around you right now

  1038. who's being torn up

  1039. by sin

  1040. and struggles?

1041. Bad choices they are making?

1042. Is there somebody around you right now

  1043. that you've been ignoring

  1044. for a long time?

1045. And you know in your heart

  1046. there's something going on.

1047. You know in their heart

1048. that they're not doing that well.

1049. You know in their heart

  1050. that maybe they're struggling

  1051. with their finances

1052. and how they're using them.

  1053. Maybe they're struggling

  1054. with pornography.

  1055. Maybe they're struggling

1056. with being a little too nice

  1057. to people who aren't

  1058. their spouses.

1059. And you've watched these things

1060. but you haven't said anything

1061. because you're in your mind

  1062. you might be saying

1063. you know that's not loving

  1064. for me to judge

1065. and to come into their life.

1066. Or you might be saying

  1067. I'm just too busy

  1068. to help them.

  1069. Who is that person?

1070. My prayer for you this week

1071. and for all of us

1072. is that we would ask God

1073. to come into our hearts

1074. and to give us the courage

  1075. to talk to them.

1076. Now don't go to them

  1077. and say

  1078. Tobin

  1079. Pastor Tobin told me

  1080. you're a sinner

1081. and I gotta tell you

  1082. about these things

1083. and that's not the process.

  1084. The process is

  1085. you're praying

  1086. you're talking to them

  1087. you're coming alongside

  1088. and you're saying

1089. hey can you help me

1090. I want to help you

1091. what's going on in your life

1092. because I want us to be

  1093. on this journey together

1094. and I want the boat

  1095. to be healthy

1096. and I want you to be healthy.

  1097. Usually after I do

  1098. a talk like this

  1099. there's a lot of people

  1100. going out there

  1101. and be careful

  1102. because you might have

  1103. people come to you.

1104. I mean if people love you

  1105. at Watermark

  1106. and in your family

  1107. hopefully people will come

  1108. to you sometime

  1109. in your life.

1110. And they'll ask you questions

  1111. they'll ask you

  1112. how are you doing

  1113. and how are your

1114. how are your sin buoys doing

  1115. and are they up

  1116. are they working perfectly

1117. and how they ask you

  1118. might really offend you.

1119. You might really get angry.

  1120. But the passage says

1121. that they're doing it in love

1122. and even if they don't do it

  1123. totally the way

1124. you would like for them

  1125. to do it

  1126. my prayer is that

  1127. you would realize

  1128. that they love you

1129. and they care for you.

  1130. And even if there's

  1131. 20% truth

  1132. in what they're saying

  1133. even if there's

  1134. 5% truth

  1135. in what they're saying

  1136. the message

  1137. that they're giving you

1138. is God's message to you

  1139. to wake up

1140. and to check the things

  1141. in your life.

  1142. So who's struggling

  1143. around you?

1144. What does it look like

1145. for us to go to them

  1146. this week

  1147. and pray for them?

  1148. And finally

  1149. this is the one

  1150. that we need to

  1151. really look at

  1152. is

  1153. are there areas

  1154. in your life

  1155. that you're ashamed of?

  1156. Are there areas

  1157. of your life

  1158. that you

  1159. don't want

  1160. the buoys around?

  1161. Are there areas

  1162. of your life

  1163. that you realize

  1164. that if people

  1165. look deeply

  1166. into these things

  1167. they would see

  1168. holes

  1169. drilled

  1170. all over your property?

  1171. Or maybe it's

  1172. with your relationships

  1173. and how you're treating

  1174. people in your office

  1175. or your helpers

  1176. or your spouses

  1177. or your children

  1178. maybe it's

  1179. your ethics

  1180. at work

  1181. maybe it's

  1182. your money

  1183. and how things

  1184. are happening

  1185. maybe it's

  1186. your sexuality

  1187. maybe you're

  1188. an immoral person

  1189. and you're struggling

  1190. with pornography

  1191. and these other things

  1192. and they

  1193. they're killing you

  1194. but you've put up

  1195. this facade

  1196. and this face

  1197. and this wall

  1198. that looks like

  1199. there's 10 billion

  1200. buoys protecting you

  1201. but in reality

  1202. there are 10 billion

  1203. buoys

  1204. but they're not

  1205. connected

  1206. they're not saying

  1207. warning warning warning

  1208. and the waves

  1209. just keep kidding you

  1210. my prayer for us

  1211. right now

  1212. and this week

  1213. is that we

  1214. as God's people

  1215. would get our lives

  1216. right before him

  1217. the passage says

  1218. that we celebrate

  1219. the Passover lamb

  1220. what it means is

  1221. that Christ died

  1222. for you

  1223. it means that

  1224. God takes sin

  1225. so seriously

  1226. that he sent

  1227. his only son

  1228. to die

  1229. for you

  1230. and in response

  1231. to that

  1232. as God's people

  1233. our response

  1234. is to clean out

  1235. the leaven

  1236. clean out the sin

  1237. clean out the things

  1238. that entangle us

  1239. and slow us down

  1240. and ask for forgiveness

  1241. and help

  1242. and repent

  1243. and hand those

  1244. to the Lord

  1245. and walk

  1246. in newness

  1247. the words

  1248. he used

  1249. is truth

  1250. and integrity

  1251. again it doesn't

  1252. mean perfection

  1253. it means

  1254. truth

  1255. and integrity

  1256. my prayer for us

  1257. as a church

  1258. is that we

  1259. wouldn't forget

  1260. this message

  1261. of the church

  1262. of Corinth

  1263. that we wouldn't

  1264. allow our lives

  1265. to go so long

  1266. until we get swamped

  1267. and that we'd realize

  1268. that people around us

  1269. need us

  1270. and we need them

  1271. because we're not

  1272. going to make it

  1273. on our own

  1274. a lot of us

  1275. in here

  1276. think that

  1277. church

  1278. is you

  1279. in a little dinghy

  1280. going by yourself

  1281. but the reality

  1282. is

  1283. according to

  1284. God's word

  1285. it's this large

  1286. ship

  1287. and if you're

  1288. in deep sin

  1289. you're swimming

  1290. beside the ship

  1291. the passage

  1292. is about

  1293. getting back in

  1294. amen

  1295. the amazing thing

  1296. about the gospel

  1297. is that Christ

  1298. and God

  1299. is a God

  1300. of second chances

  1301. my prayer

  1302. is that we

  1303. as a people

  1304. would remind people

  1305. about this

  1306. and be involved

  1307. in each other's lives

  1308. father thank you

  1309. for this day

1310. thank you for your word

  1311. that is living

  1312. and active

  1313. thank you for

  1314. your spirit

  1315. that comes into

  1316. our lives

  1317. and prompts us

  1318. father I thank you

  1319. for this community

  1320. the people of God

  1321. I pray that we

  1322. would not be

  1323. like the church

  1324. of Corinth

  1325. I pray that we

  1326. would not become

  1327. prideful and arrogant

  1328. and self-sufficient

  1329. but that we would

  1330. realize that we

  1331. need you

  1332. and that we

  1333. would need each

  1334. other

  1335. I pray that we

  1336. would realize

  1337. that we are in

  1338. a world that is

  1339. hostile to us

  1340. and wants to

  1341. destroy us

  1342. and the only thing

  1343. that will save us

  1344. is you

  1345. sometimes you do

  1346. that through your word

  1347. sometimes you do

  1348. that through your spirit

  1349. but your word

  1350. says you always

  1351. do that

  1352. through community

1353. may we be a people

  1354. who understand that

  1355. and know that we're

  1356. in the same ship

  1357. going in the same

  1358. direction

  1359. worshiping the same

  1360. Lord

  1361. father I pray for

  1362. my brothers and

  1363. sisters in here

  1364. right now who

  1365. aren't in that ship

  1366. who think that

  1367. they're doing well

  1368. and they're

  1369. basically

  1370. not doing well

  1371. I pray that they

  1372. would ask the

  1373. people around

  1374. them who brought

  1375. them today

  1376. or me

  1377. or somebody

  1378. here

  1379. what does it

  1380. really mean

  1381. to be a

  1382. Christian

  1383. what does it

  1384. look like to

  1385. be a person

  1386. who is a

  1387. saint but a

  1388. sinner at the

  1389. same time

  1390. what does it

  1391. look like a

  1392. person who

  1393. struggles with

  1394. these things

  1395. instead of

  1396. allowing them

  1397. to overwhelm

  1398. us and to

  1399. control us

  1400. what does it

  1401. look like to

  1402. be a person

  1403. who understands

  1404. grace and

  1405. mercy

  1406. most of all

  1407. an awesome

  1408. savior and

  1409. God

  1410. and what I

  1411. pray for us

  1412. as a church

  1413. that we would

  1414. never forget

  1415. why we're

  1416. here

  1417. that we're

  1418. not here just

  1419. to start a

  1420. club and to

  1421. make it look

  1422. really nice in

  1423. our boat and

  1424. have everything

  1425. we need in

  1426. our boat for

  1427. ourselves but

  1428. we're here to

  1429. reach people who

  1430. aren't in the

  1431. boat

  1432. we're here to

  1433. be real and

  1434. authentic and

  1435. honest to

  1436. challenge each

  1437. other to

  1438. encourage each

  1439. other to

  1440. point each

  1441. other to your

  1442. son

  1443. what I

  1444. pray that we

  1445. would never

  1446. forget

  1447. that we

  1448. would never

  1449. allow the

  1450. waves to

  1451. sink us

  1452. that we'd

  1453. always trust

  1454. in you

  1455. father we

  1456. love you

  1457. we desperately

  1458. need you

  1459. we pray these

  1460. things in your

  1461. son jesus name

  1462. amen
