  1. Let's hear the word of God.

  2. And God said, Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds,

  3. the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground,

  4. and the wild animals, each according to its kind.

  5. And it was so.

  6. God made the wild animals according to their kinds,

  7. the livestock according to their kinds,

  8. and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.

  9. And God saw that it was good.

  10. Then God said, Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness,

  11. so that they may rule over the fish in the sea, and birds in the sky,

  12. over the livestock, and all the wild animals,

  13. and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

  14. So God created mankind in His own image.

  15. In the image of God, He created them.

  16. Male and female, He created them.

  17. God blessed them and said to them,

  18. Be fruitful and increase in number.

  19. Fill the earth and subdue it.

  20. Rule over the fish in the sea, and the birds in the sky,

  21. and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

  22. Then God said,

  23. I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth,

  24. and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.

  25. They will be yours for food.

  26. And to all the beasts of the earth,

  27. and all the birds in the sky,

  28. and all the creatures that move along the ground,

  29. everything that has the breath of life in it,

  30. I give every green plant for food.

  31. And it was so.

  32. God saw all that He had made,

  33. and it was very good.

  34. And there was evening,

  35. and there was morning,

  36. the sixth day.

  37. Brothers and sisters in Christ,

  38. when I studied in my seminary in Jakarta,

  39. I remember once a lecturer taught us

  40. that there are four big questions in our lives

  41. that each of us needs to answer.

  42. There are four big life questions.

  43. The first one is about the object of our worship.

  44. Who is it that we worship?

  45. Everyone must have an object of the worship,

  46. whether it is God, or money, or ourselves.

  47. There should be object that we worship.

  48. Who is it?

  49. The second one is,

  50. how do we live our lives?

  51. Our answer to the first question

  52. will determine how we live our lives.

  53. Then the third one is,

  54. whom will we spend our lives with?

  55. This is about choosing a spouse.

  56. If he or she is not the right one,

  57. then we might suffer for the rest of our lives.

  58. So this is a very important question.

  59. And the fourth question is,

  60. what are we going to do in our lives?

  61. This is about our job.

  62. This evening,

  63. I will address this fourth question.

  64. How should we view our work?

  65. What does the Bible say about it?

  66. I want to start this evening with a story

  67. about three bricklayers.

  68. Maybe you are familiar with this.

  69. A traveler came upon three men working.

  70. He asked the first man what he was doing.

  71. And the man said he was laying bricks.

  72. Then the traveler asked,

  73. why are you doing this job?

  74. The man said,

  75. of course, to make money.

  76. What else?

  77. Oh, I see.

  78. Then the traveler asked the second man

  79. with the same question.

  80. What are you doing?

  81. Oh, I'm laying bricks.

  82. And then he asked the same,

  83. another question.

  84. Why are you doing this?

  85. Then the second man said,

  86. because I like this job.

  87. This is my expertise.

  88. I heard that we are building a church

  89. and it will be the most beautiful church in town.

  90. I just take a small part,

  91. but I'm proud of it.

  92. Oh, I see.

  93. That's wonderful.

  94. Then the traveler asked the third man

  95. the same question.

  96. He gave the same answer.

  97. What are you doing?

  98. I'm laying bricks.

  99. But when the traveler asked,

  100. why question?

  101. Why are you doing this?

  102. He said like this,

  103. we are building a church

  104. and I pray that the people in this town

  105. will come to this church

  106. and worship the Lord together.

  107. So these three men

  108. with the same job,

  109. same activity,

  110. but different attitudes.

  111. If I ask you,

  112. what's the difference among them?

  113. For myself,

  114. I will conclude that the first man

  115. worked for money.

  116. The second man worked for himself,

  117. for his self-actualization.

  118. And the third bricklayer

  119. worked for God.

  120. Now, how does the Bible view

  121. the job that we do?

  122. We have already read

  123. from Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  124. especially verse 26 and 27.

  125. Let us make mankind in our image,

  126. in our likeness,

  127. so that they may rule

  128. over the fish in the sea

  129. and the birds in the sky,

  130. over the livestock,

  131. and all the wild animals,

  132. and over all the creatures

  133. that move along the ground.

  134. So there are two great tasks

  135. God gave to the humankind,

  136. to multiply and fill the earth,

  137. and to rule over God's creation,

  138. or subdue the earth.

  139. It is important to note that

  140. it is the second task

  141. that makes humans unique.

  142. If God only gave one task,

  143. the first task,

  144. that is just to increase in number,

  145. then humans are not different

  146. from animals.

  147. I would like to read

  148. from the verse 21 and 22

  149. from Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  150. So God created

  151. the great creatures of the sea

  152. and every living thing

  153. with which the water teems

  154. and that moves about in it

  155. according to their kinds

  156. and every winged bird

  157. according to its kind.

  158. And God saw that it was good.

  159. And look at verse 22.

  160. God blessed them and said,

  161. Be fruitful and increase in number

  162. and fill the water in the seas

  163. and let the birds increase on the earth.

  164. So dominion over the creation

  165. is what makes humans special.

  166. Based on the story of creation,

  167. how we as Christians

  168. should view our job?

  169. I want to emphasize one point

  170. this evening.

  171. That job is a call from God.

  172. Every work is a call from God.

  173. It is one aspect of being a human,

  174. of being God's image.

  175. Many people in this world

  176. do not like going to work.

  177. You might be familiar with the phrase,

  178. I hate Mondays.

  179. I don't like Mondays.

  180. For many people,

  181. weekend is so enjoyable

  182. that Monday is seen to

  183. rob the fun or the enjoyment.

  184. Then why do people still go to work on Monday

  185. if it's not fun?

  186. Of course, because of money.

  187. If money comes from heaven,

  188. then I will stop working.

  189. Or I will do that as a hobby.

  190. No wonder nowadays,

  191. some best-selling books

  192. sell an idea of how to get more money

  193. with less work.

  194. If you can get more money

  195. with less work,

  196. then it will be great.

  197. In my country,

  198. multi-level marketing

  199. is still very popular.

  200. How to invest money?

  201. The idea is,

  202. don't work for money.

  203. Make it work for you.

  204. Ah, it's beautiful, eh?

  205. Don't work for money.

  206. Make it work for you.

  207. But I want to remind us

  208. that behind this idea,

  209. we can identify a concept

  210. that job is a curse.

  211. Job is torturing.

  212. Avoid it if you can.

  213. And this belief is not biblical.

  214. The passage that we have read in Genesis

  215. reminds us that working

  216. is God's command.

  217. He's calling for us

  218. a part of being a human.

  219. And then we can see

  220. how Adam's sons

  221. responded to this call.

  222. If we skip several chapters

  223. to Genesis chapter 4,

    Genesis 4:2

  224. verse 2 said,

  225. Now Abel kept flocks,

  226. and Cain worked the soil.

  227. So here we can see

  228. Abel became a shepherd,

  229. while Cain became a farmer.

  230. They fulfilled their role

  231. to serve God

  232. as his vice regents

  233. over creation.

  234. And so we are called

  235. to do the same role.

  236. In the ancient Near East,

  237. a king would set up

  238. statues of himself

  239. across the land

  240. to manifest his sovereignty

  241. over his kingdom.

  242. In reading that man

  243. is the image of God,

  244. Moses' original audience

  245. would have understood

  246. that as they reproduce

  247. and fill the earth,

  248. they would be

  249. representing

  250. the sovereign creator

  251. to his creation.

  252. Subduing the earth

  253. or having dominion

  254. over it

  255. does not mean

  256. exploiting it,

  257. but nurturing

  258. and protecting it,

  259. caring for it.

  260. A theologian wrote

  261. that work

  262. is part of

  263. God's loving plan.

  264. We are called

  265. to cultivate

  266. and care

  267. for all the goods

  268. of creation.

  269. So I want to emphasize

  270. again this point.

  271. All kinds of good job

  272. can be a calling

  273. from God.

  274. Whether you are

  275. a businessman,

  276. a teacher,

  277. a scientist,

  278. a cleaner,

  279. all kinds of good job

  280. can be a calling

  281. from God.

  282. Some people may think

  283. that only pastors

  284. or church ministers

  285. who are called

  286. by God.

  287. In some contexts,

  288. especially in my own country,

  289. if people ask me,

  290. why do you want

  291. to become a pastor?

  292. I should say,

  293. it's God's call for me.

  294. I cannot say,

  295. it's a hobby.

  296. It's my,

  297. I love to be a pastor.

  298. No,

  299. it should be God's call.

  300. It should be a good answer.

  301. But then,

  302. many Christians

  303. still think

  304. that apart from

  305. being church ministers,

  306. other jobs

  307. are nothing to do

  308. with God's call.

  309. No,

  310. we should remember

  311. that doing our job,

  312. any kind of good job,

  313. is one way

  314. to serve God.

  315. This includes

  316. being a mother

  317. or a housewife.

  318. You know,

  319. William Tyndale,

  320. William Tyndale

  321. is an English scholar

  322. who became

  323. a leading figure

  324. in the Protestant Reformation.

  325. he once wrote,

  326. this is William Tyndale,

  327. if we look externally,

  328. there is difference

  329. between washing dishes

  330. and preaching

  331. the word of God.

  332. But as touching

  333. to please God,

  334. there is no difference

  335. at all.

  336. That's biblical view

  337. of work,

  338. that there's no difference

  339. when done

  340. to the honor

  341. of the Lord

  342. between preaching

  343. and washing dishes.

  344. So,

  345. this is

  346. what should be

  347. biblical view.

  348. We understand

  349. that being a housewife

  350. or a mother

  351. is not easy.

  352. Once,

  353. my wife told me

  354. that she has a friend

  355. who found

  356. raising little children

  357. frustrating.

  358. She couldn't stand

  359. yelling at them

  360. again

  361. and again.

  362. She had

  363. promised to herself,

  364. I don't want to yell

  365. at my kids,

  366. but it doesn't work.

  367. She felt that

  368. it seems easier

  369. for her

  370. to become a missionary

  371. to other parts

  372. of the world

  373. than being patient

  374. to her own

  375. small children.

  376. Being a mother

  377. does not get paid.

  378. There's no promotion

  379. for mothers.

  380. But if you happen

  381. to be one,

  382. that is God's call

  383. for you.

  384. So is the image

  385. of God,

  386. we should find

  387. our own vocation.

  388. Then the problem is,

  389. why cannot we view

  390. our job this way?

  391. Why do people

  392. still say

  393. that they hate Mondays?

  394. We know the answer

  395. from the Bible.

  396. It's because

  397. of the curse

  398. of sin.

  399. I want to read

  400. to you

  401. Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3:17–19

  402. verse 17

  403. to 19.

  404. This is the story

  405. after the fall.

  406. Then God

  407. said to Adam,

  408. Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3:17

  409. verse 17

  410. the second part,

  411. Cursed is the ground

  412. because of you.

  413. Through painful toil

  414. you will eat

  415. food from it

  416. all the days

  417. of your life.

  418. It will produce

  419. thorns and thissers

  420. for you

  421. and you will eat

  422. the plants

  423. of the field.

  424. By the sweat

  425. of your brow

  426. you will eat

  427. your food

  428. until you return

  429. to the ground

  430. since from it

  431. you were taken.

  432. For thus you are

  433. and to thus

  434. you will return.

  435. So we can see

  436. that after the fall

  437. work

  438. was not a blessing

  439. anymore.

  440. If people

  441. hate Mondays

  442. it's because

  443. painful toil,

  444. thorns and thistles,

  445. sweat of your brow

  446. have become

  447. part of

  448. people's daily

  449. experience

  450. when they work.

  451. but more

  452. than the painful toil

  453. people

  454. who are

  455. outside of Christ

  456. have also

  457. lost the meaning

  458. of work.

  459. God is the one

  460. who gives

  461. humans the call

  462. to work

  463. and in this call

  464. lies the purpose

  465. the joy

  466. and the blessing.

  467. But when people

  468. reject God

  469. then they don't know

  470. why they have

  471. to work.

  472. They lose

  473. the original purpose

  474. and the blessing.

  475. Now if people

  476. do not work

  477. to respond

  478. to God's call

  479. then what

  480. is their motivation?

  481. I believe

  482. there are

  483. at least

  484. some ways

  485. of how people

  486. view their job

  487. as a consequence

  488. of the fall.

  489. Let's back

  490. to our story

  491. of the three

  492. big layers.

  493. You remember

  494. that the first man

  495. works only

  496. for money.

  497. I believe

  498. that for many people

  499. what motivates

  500. them to work

  501. is to get money.

  502. Money

  503. and money.

  504. I did not say

  505. that working

  506. to get some money

  507. is not biblical.

  508. Don't get me wrong.

  509. Paul wrote

  510. in 2 Thessalonians

  511. 3 chapter 10

  512. that the one

  513. who is unwilling

  514. to work

  515. shall not eat.

  516. The problem

  517. is not money itself

  518. but when money

  519. becomes the focus

  520. of their lives.

  521. What Bible

  522. calls the love

  523. of money.

  524. We know

  525. the saying

  526. time is money.

  527. All is

  528. about money.

  529. These people

  530. believe

  531. that money

  532. can buy

  533. anything they want

  534. including happiness.

  535. Then they teach

  536. this belief

  537. to their children

  538. since they first

  539. go to school

  540. at least

  541. in my culture.

  542. So when we ask

  543. parents

  544. why do we have

  545. to go to school

  546. every day?

  547. Then the parents

  548. will teach us

  549. so that when you

  550. grow up

  551. you can work

  552. and make

  553. some money

  554. or make

  555. a lot of money

  556. and live a good life.

  557. That's it.

  558. Then these children

  559. when they grow up

  560. they focus on money

  561. in taking

  562. all important

  563. decisions in life

  564. which subject

  565. to take

  566. when they want

  567. to study

  568. which company

  569. or institution

  570. to work with

  571. all depends

  572. on how much

  573. money that

  574. they will

  575. or can get

  576. in return.

  577. But let us

  578. be careful

  579. with this belief.

  580. What does

  581. Bible say?

  582. The Bible say

  583. about the danger

  584. of the love

  585. of money.

  586. I believe

  587. that you are

  588. familiar with this.

  589. Paul again

  590. wrote

  591. in the first

    1 Timothy 6:10

  592. Timothy

  593. chapter 6

  594. verse 10

  595. for the love

  596. of money

  597. is the root

  598. of evil.

  599. The love

  600. of money

  601. is the root

  602. of evil.

  603. Instead of

  604. bringing happiness

  605. the love

  606. of money

  607. bring destruction

  608. to the world

  609. bring destruction

  610. to the human

  611. relationships.

  612. Because of money

  613. people don't

  614. care about

  615. God's creation.

  616. They can

  617. exploit the earth.

  618. They don't

  619. care about

  620. other people.

  621. Other people

  622. are just

  623. viewed as

  624. a means

  625. to get

  626. more money

  627. and more profit.

  628. That's the

  629. first view.

  630. The second view

  631. as a consequence

  632. of the fall

  633. is working

  634. to pursue

  635. self-glory.

  636. For those

  637. who like

  638. their job

  639. so much

  640. money

  641. might not

  642. tempt them.

  643. These people

  644. are passionate

  645. with their job

  646. achieve many

  647. things

  648. and do

  649. their job

  650. excellently.

  651. It's like

  652. the view

  653. of the second

  654. bricklayer

  655. in our story.

  656. But then

  657. they are not

  658. satisfied

  659. with just

  660. being excellent.

  661. They might

  662. become thirst

  663. for praise

  664. and admiration

  665. from other

  666. people.

  667. Our world

  668. adores the

  669. greatest,

  670. the fastest,

  671. the strongest,

  672. the best,

  673. and the

  674. otherest.

  675. For some

  676. people,

  677. work is

  678. like an

  679. arena

  680. where they

  681. compete with

  682. others

  683. and makes

  684. effort so hard

  685. to defeat

  686. their rivals

  687. and to be

  688. number one,

  689. to prove

  690. themselves.

  691. When they

  692. find someone

  693. else is

  694. better than

  695. them,

  696. they feel

  697. so envious

  698. and so

  699. resentful.

  700. I believe

  701. this is what

  702. Apostle John

  703. called in

  704. 1 John 2

  705. as pride

  706. of life.

  707. When we

  708. pursue self-glory

  709. in anything

  710. we do.

  711. These ways

  712. of viewing

  713. work

  714. is also

  715. dangerous

  716. because people

  717. who seek

  718. after approval

  719. and admiration

  720. from others

  721. would easily

  722. feel envious

  723. toward those

  724. who are better

  725. or more

  726. successful

  727. than them.

  728. And the

  729. Bible also

  730. says something

  731. about this

  732. feeling of

  733. envy.

  734. This is my

  735. favorite verse

  736. from Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 4:4

  737. chapter 4

  738. verse 4.

  739. It's very easy.

  740. Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 4:4

  741. chapter 4

  742. verse 4.

  743. It is said,

  744. And I saw

  745. that all

  746. toil

  747. and all

  748. achievement

  749. spring

  750. from one

  751. person's

  752. envy

  753. of another.

  754. This too

  755. is meaningless.

  756. A chasing

  757. after the

  758. win.

  759. It's interesting

  760. for me.

  761. I used to

  762. believe

  763. and I heard

  764. from one

  765. great preacher

  766. that envy

  767. has a negative

  768. side

  769. and has a

  770. positive side.

  771. The negative

  772. side is that

  773. envy can

  774. make us

  775. hate our

  776. rivals

  777. and want

  778. to harm

  779. them.

  780. But it

  781. also has

  782. a positive

  783. side.

  784. It can

  785. push

  786. ourselves

  787. to the

  788. limit

  789. to learn

  790. more

  791. skills

  792. and to

  793. be as

  794. good

  795. or even

  796. better

  797. than

  798. our

  799. rivals.

  800. However,

  801. the Bible

  802. says

  803. differently.

  804. Envy

  805. is

  806. meaningless.

  807. Brothers

  808. and sisters

  809. in Christ,

  810. do we still

  811. view work

  812. only as

  813. a means

  814. to make

  815. money

  816. or to

  817. get

  818. others'

  819. approval?

  820. There was

  821. one person

  822. in the

  823. Bible

  824. who had

  825. it all,

  826. but he

  827. was not

  828. happy at

  829. all.

  830. I want

  831. to read

  832. the last

  833. passage for

  834. us this

  835. evening,

  836. again,

  837. from

  838. Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 2 chapter mention

  839. chapter 2.

  840. Ecclesiastes

  841. is believed

  842. to be written

  843. by King

  844. Solomon,

  845. and we

  846. can believe

  847. that it

  848. might be

  849. his own

  850. experience.

  851. Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 2:4–11

  852. chapter 2

  853. verse 4

  854. to 11.

  855. I will

  856. read this

  857. passage for

  858. you.

  859. I

  860. undertook

  861. great

  862. projects.

  863. I built

  864. houses for

  865. myself

  866. and planted

  867. vineyards.

  868. I made

  869. gardens and

  870. parks and

  871. planted all

  872. kinds of

  873. fruit trees

  874. in them.

  875. I made

  876. a service

  877. to water

  878. growth of

  879. flourishing

  880. trees.

  881. I bought

  882. male and

  883. female slaves

  884. and had

  885. other slaves

  886. who were

  887. born in

  888. my house.

  889. I also

  890. own more

  891. herds and

  892. flocks than

  893. anyone in

  894. Jerusalem

  895. before me.

  896. I gathered

  897. silver and

  898. gold for

  899. myself and

  900. the treasure

  901. of kings

  902. and provinces.

  903. He's very

  904. wealthy.

  905. I acquired

  906. male and

  907. female singers

  908. and had

  909. them as

  910. well.

  911. the

  912. delights of

  913. a man's

  914. heart.

  915. I became

  916. greater by

  917. far than

  918. anyone in

  919. Jerusalem

  920. before me.

  921. In all

  922. this,

  923. my wisdom

  924. stayed with

  925. me.

  926. And

  927. then

  928. chapter,

  929. verse 10,

  930. I denied

  931. I denied

  932. myself

  933. nothing,

  934. my eyes

  935. desired.

  936. I refused

  937. my heart

  938. no pleasure.

  939. My heart

  940. took delight

  941. in all

  942. my labor,

  943. and this

  944. was the

  945. reward for

  946. all my

  947. toil.

  948. And then

  949. comes

  950. verse 11,

  951. one.

  952. Yet,

  953. when I

  954. surveyed

  955. all that

  956. my hands

  957. had done

  958. and what

  959. I had

  960. toiled to

  961. achieve,

  962. everything

  963. was

  964. meaningless.

  965. A chasing

  966. after the

  967. wind,

  968. nothing was

  969. gained under

  970. the sun.

  971. Let us

  972. not try to

  973. find happiness

  974. and satisfaction

  975. in wealth,

  976. in pleasure,

  977. or fame.

  978. King Solomon

  979. had them

  980. all,

  981. but he

  982. said they

  983. were

  984. meaningless.

  985. That's why

  986. Jesus Christ

  987. came and

  988. saved us,

  989. so that we

  990. can be

  991. delivered from

  992. the curse

  993. of sin,

  994. and gave

  995. us a

  996. meaningful

  997. and abundant

  998. life.

  999. Our

  1000. happiness

  1001. does not

  1002. depend on

  1003. wealth or

  1004. pleasure,

  1005. but on

  1006. our relationship

  1007. with God.

  1008. God in

  1009. Christ has

  1010. loved us

  1011. and accepted

  1012. us just

  1013. as the way

  1014. we are.

  1015. there is

  1016. nothing we

  1017. should prove.

  1018. Furthermore,

  1019. God's salvation

  1020. has enabled

  1021. us to live

  1022. as God's

  1023. image.

  1024. We are

  1025. enabled to

  1026. recover the

  1027. joy and

  1028. meaning of

  1029. our work

  1030. as God's

  1031. call for

  1032. us.

  1033. Let's

  1034. bear this

  1035. in mind,

  1036. and tomorrow

  1037. when we

  1038. wake up

  1039. in the

  1040. morning,

  1041. let us

  1042. remember

  1043. that we

  1044. are God's

  1045. representative

  1046. in subduing

  1047. this earth

  1048. by doing

  1049. our job.

  1050. Not for the

  1051. love of money,

  1052. nor for the

  1053. glory of

  1054. ourselves,

  1055. but for the

  1056. glory of

  1057. God.

  1058. Hmm.

  1059. And

  1060. remember,

  1061. of

  1062. maybe

  1063. do

  1064. nothing for the

  1065. Lord,

  1066. what I

  1067. I

  1068. ever
