  1. Father, we thank you for Jesus.

  2. We thank you, Father, that he left the glory of heaven

  3. to set aside his glory and majesty and divine prerogatives

  4. to humble himself and take into himself our human nature.

  5. We give you thanks and praise that he came

  6. and was born amongst us through the Virgin Mary

  7. for his life on earth, his simple life.

  8. We thank you, Father, for his miracles,

  9. for his mighty teaching.

  10. We thank you, Father, most of all,

  11. that he died upon the cross for us,

  12. that the cross is the power that comes from you for salvation.

  13. We thank you, Father, that Jesus tasted all there is

  14. to taste of death, and he did that for us.

  15. And we thank you, Father, that he rose triumphant

  16. over sin and death and all hostile spiritual powers

  17. in his mighty resurrection.

  18. Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit

  19. would gently but deeply fall upon us this morning.

  20. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit

  21. would both humble us,

  22. and at the same time, Father,

  23. help us to come to ourselves

  24. so that we might turn to Jesus

  25. ever more fully and completely.

  26. All this we ask in the name of Jesus,

  27. your Son and our Savior.

  28. Amen.

  29. Please be seated.

  30. You're going to need your Bibles

  31. because we're going to look actually this morning.

  32. I'm not going to have a whole pile of points.

  33. I have three pictures and a Bible.

  34. So, Andrew, if you could put the first picture up,

  35. that would be great,

  36. the first work of art.

  37. If you could put it up, that would be great.

  38. We're going to be looking at Luke 15.

  39. So, if you have your Bibles,

  40. it would be really great.

  41. We're going to slowly read Luke 15 this morning.

  42. And if you don't have your Bibles with you,

  43. there's always a few Bibles up here at the front,

  44. and you're welcome to come and take them.

  45. This is a...

  46. I hope you can see it all right.

  47. It's an interesting picture.

  48. It shows it's a triptych.

  49. It shows a sheep,

  50. and then it shows the sheep.

  51. You can sort of see a snake there at the bottom.

  52. You can see the vulture.

  53. You can see the sheep is caught in thorns.

  54. And then you see a picture of a shepherd

  55. carrying the sheep back.

  56. And we're going to read the parable

  57. that influenced and inspired that.

  58. But just I want to mention something first

  59. about the picture.

  60. The woman who drew that,

  61. there's a famous literary critic,

  62. an artistic critic in England

  63. during the 19th century,

  64. and he believed that women couldn't paint.

  65. And he met this young woman

  66. and saw some of her paintings,

  67. and he said that this woman changed his mind

  68. on whether a woman could paint.

  69. But shortly after that encounter,

  70. she came to faith in Jesus,

  71. and she continued to paint and draw.

  72. But then she felt that God was calling her

  73. to go to an unreached people group,

  74. to lost sheep,

  75. and to tell them about Jesus.

  76. So she made several attempts

  77. to get on with the mission agency,

  78. and she always failed the physical.

  79. She was from money,

  80. and she had two other women friends

  81. who were also of money.

  82. So the three of them decided

  83. that they were just going to go to Algeria.

  84. They didn't speak French.

  85. They didn't speak Arab.

  86. They don't know a single person there.

  87. They just decided they would go to Algeria

  88. and start to share the gospel.

  89. And that's where she spent the rest of her life.

  90. And this picture here

  91. and others were just part of the little notes

  92. that she did.

  93. She didn't do anything to get published

  94. or become famous.

  95. But she continued to paint occasionally

  96. and draw occasionally,

  97. and these are all sort of,

  98. this was found in her notes after her death,

  99. because she spent the rest of her life in Algeria.

  100. So what causes people to do such things like this,

  101. turn their back on artistic fame

  102. and on money and comfort,

  103. and go to a place like Algeria in 18,

  104. I think it was 1878,

  105. not knowing the languages,

  106. and just determined to learn the languages

  107. and meet the people and tell them about Jesus?

  108. Well, these three parables,

  109. so we're going to look at these three linked parables,

  110. this helps us to understand

  111. and maybe be caught by something similar,

  112. not that God is necessarily calling us

  113. to forsake everything

  114. and go and do something like that,

  115. although he may call some to do such things,

  116. but to at least get a sense of what it is

  117. that can come into a human heart

  118. that could so change them.

  119. So Luke 15,

  120. they're sort of all famous parables.

  121. We don't always sort of understand

  122. or remember that they all flow one into another.

  123. They're in fact all very specifically linked,

  124. and it's Luke 15, verse 1,

    Luke 15:1

  125. it starts like this.

  126. Now the tax collectors,

  127. and in Jesus' times,

  128. tax collectors were basically

  129. helping the occupying power

  130. keep the Jewish people in their place,

  131. and they were all, as a rule,

  132. deeply corrupt.

  133. They were thieves.

  134. Now the tax collectors and sinners,

  135. and this word in Jesus' time

  136. meant that they were,

  137. they'd probably been,

  138. they were people who were in and out of jail,

  139. they were people who were thieves,

  140. they were probably prostitutes,

  141. or just like a whole group of people

  142. who sort of like the underclass of society

  143. that did a whole pile of things

  144. connected to vices.

  145. And so the tax collectors and sinners

  146. were all drawing near to hear Jesus.

  147. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled.

  148. And in the original language,

  149. it sort of,

  150. they didn't just grumble once.

  151. The grumbling was long.

  152. It went on for a while.

  153. In fact,

  154. they were in danger of becoming a grumble.

  155. You know,

  156. some of us,

  157. that's the danger with every grumble.

  158. It can start as a grumble,

  159. and before we know it,

  160. we have become a grumble.

  161. We're only a grumble.

  162. And they grumble and said,

  163. this man receives sinners and eats with them.

  164. And so Jesus told them this parable.

  165. What man of you having a hundred sheep,

  166. if he has lost one of them,

  167. does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country

  168. and go after the one that is lost

  169. until he finds it?

  170. And when he has found it,

  171. he lays it on his shoulders rejoicing.

  172. And when he comes home,

  173. he calls together his friends and his neighbors,

  174. saying to them,

  175. rejoice with me,

  176. for I have found my sheep that was lost.

  177. Just note that again here.

  178. Isn't it really interesting?

  179. Not only does he go,

  180. I mean,

  181. that's this wonderful triptych, eh?

  182. It shows the sheep getting lost.

  183. What happens when it's lost?

  184. It shows the shepherd.

  185. But it's,

  186. I have found my sheep that was lost.

  187. And verse seven,

  188. just so I tell you,

  189. there will be more joy in heaven

  190. over one sinner who repents

  191. than over ninety-nine righteous persons

  192. who needs no repentance.

  193. Now,

  194. this is a pretty cool story.

  195. It's a pretty neat picture.

  196. And,

  197. but,

  198. you know,

  199. here's the thing that really struck me.

  200. On,

  201. I wish I could tell you that I'm so smart

  202. and so perceptive

  203. that it struck me

  204. the first time I read the text,

  205. but it didn't

  206. because I'm not that smart

  207. and I'm not that perceptive.

  208. If we were going to tell people

  209. a story about repentance,

  210. would we use this story

  211. about what it means to repent?

  212. Listen again to how the story,

  213. how Jesus summarizes the story.

  214. Just so I tell you,

  215. there will be more joy in heaven

  216. over the one,

  217. over one sinner who repents

  218. than over ninety-nine righteous persons

  219. who need no repentance.

  220. But if you think about it in the story,

  221. that sheep does nothing.

  222. That sheep does absolutely nothing.

  223. This isn't a parable about the sheep

  224. doing a particular ritual,

  225. feeling a particular thing,

  226. feeling guilty.

  227. It's not a story about a sheep saying,

  228. oh, here I am caught all up in these brambles

  229. and the little sheep falls down on its knees

  230. and goes,

  231. shepherd, come and find me.

  232. The sheep does nothing.

  233. Every single thing in the story

  234. is all about the shepherd

  235. with nothing left out.

  236. The shepherd notices that the sheep is gone.

  237. The shepherd goes looking for the sheep.

  238. The shepherd finds the sheep.

  239. The shepherd picks up the sheep.

  240. The shepherd brings home the sheep.

  241. And then Jesus says,

  242. this is a story about repentance.

  243. Isn't that really puzzling?

  244. Like, this is a,

  245. this,

  246. if we just are honest for a second,

  247. this actually doesn't make very much sense

  248. to us.

  249. Because we would think that a story about repentance

  250. would be more about

  251. somebody falling on their knees

  252. or maybe somebody falling,

  253. crying or calling out to God.

  254. That's what we would think repentance is about.

  255. But Jesus says this is a repentance story

  256. and it doesn't seem as if the sheep does any repenting.

  257. The sheep is completely and utterly helpless and passive.

  258. Well, maybe Jesus is going to correct it

  259. with the next parable.

  260. But actually, in the next parable,

  261. Jesus makes it worse

  262. because he uses an inanimate object

  263. as the heart of the parable.

  264. If you could put up the next painting.

  265. This is also by a 19th century painter.

  266. And this actually is also one

  267. that has a conversion story connected to it.

  268. This fellow was the,

  269. the illustrator,

  270. the painter of this

  271. was very, very successful in France.

  272. And he's,

  273. his big specialty was painting rich ladies

  274. who were all dolled up.

  275. And in fact,

  276. now Hollywood and others

  277. use his paintings

  278. to try to get a bit of a picture

  279. about what people

  280. in the late 1800s,

  281. how they dressed,

  282. especially rich women.

  283. And he had a very, very fine

  284. and it was celebrated

  285. and then he met Jesus.

  286. And after he met Jesus,

  287. after a bit of a struggle,

  288. all he did after that

  289. was his only goal

  290. was to paint stories

  291. that illustrated

  292. and brought the Bible home.

  293. I'm not saying

  294. that was the right decision,

  295. but that's what God

  296. put on his heart.

  297. That after making his living,

  298. painting rich people,

  299. that he would paint the Bible

  300. to help us to understand

  301. and see what the Bible

  302. was talking about.

  303. So here, remember,

  304. we said that the last,

  305. the first thing,

  306. it's a very, very odd

  307. repentance story.

  308. Like, where's the repentance?

  309. This sheep does nothing.

  310. Well, how does Jesus fix this problem?

  311. He tells this parable.

  312. Or, see, Jesus links it.

  313. Or, verse 8,

  314. what woman,

  315. having 10 silver coins,

  316. or drachma,

  317. and that means

  318. it's the equivalent

  319. to one day's wage

  320. for an average working person.

  321. Okay, that's how much

  322. the coin is worth.

  323. So what woman,

  324. having 10 silver coins,

  325. if she loses one coin,

  326. does not light a lamp

  327. and sweep the house

  328. and seek diligently

  329. until she finds it?

  330. And when she has found it,

  331. she calls together

  332. her friends and neighbors,

  333. saying,

  334. rejoice with me,

  335. for I have found

  336. the coin

  337. that I had lost.

  338. How does Jesus

  339. summarize the parable?

  340. Just so I tell you,

  341. there is joy

  342. before the angels of God

  343. over one sinner

  344. who repents.

  345. And look,

  346. there's a couple of things

  347. that are really interesting here.

  348. There is joy

  349. before the angels of God.

  350. So in the first one,

  351. the angels throw a party.

  352. Who's the one

  353. jumping up and down in joy

  354. in front of the angels?

  355. It's God.

  356. In the first one,

  357. it's angels doing,

  358. whoo,

  359. here it's God doing it.

  360. In front,

  361. the angels are watching.

  362. And once again,

  363. look at that.

  364. It's over,

  365. in verse,

  366. look at that in verse 10 again.

  367. Just so I tell you,

  368. there is joy

  369. before the angels of God

  370. over one sinner

  371. who repents.

  372. Jesus says,

  373. this is a story

  374. about repentance.

  375. Yet,

  376. it's a coin.

  377. But what's that coin doing

  378. to be found?

  379. That coin's not calling out

  380. to the lady.

  381. Come on, lady,

  382. please find me.

  383. I'm way here in the corner.

  384. I feel really lonely.

  385. I feel broken.

  386. I feel depressed.

  387. I need you, lady.

  388. Like,

  389. the coin's not doing

  390. anything like that.

  391. The coin's a coin.

  392. It's just sitting there.

  393. The lady does everything.

  394. Like,

  395. even more than the sheep.

  396. At least you could say

  397. with the shepherd

  398. that maybe he'd help

  399. to find the sheep

  400. because it's going,

  401. bah,

  402. bah,

  403. two terrible sheep.

  404. Bah.

  405. And that helps the shepherd

  406. to find the sheep.

  407. But that coin does nothing.

  408. In fact,

  409. in this picture,

  410. it's not even glinting.

  411. It's just off

  412. in a dark corner.

  413. And yet,

  414. Jesus says,

  415. this is a repentance story.

  416. So here's the first thing

  417. that's going to rock our world.

  418. Okay?

  419. Um,

  420. you see,

  421. one of the problems

  422. that I have in this church

  423. is that I believe

  424. that I'm the center

  425. and everything else

  426. has to revolve around me.

  427. It's a problem

  428. in my family as well.

  429. If the family

  430. would just get on the page

  431. that I'm the center

  432. and everything revolves around me,

  433. everything would go far easier.

  434. See,

  435. the problem is

  436. everybody in my family

  437. thinks the same thing.

  438. And the other problem

  439. is that everybody

  440. in the church

  441. thinks the same thing.

  442. You know,

  443. if the pastor

  444. would just do everything

  445. exactly the way

  446. I want it to be done,

  447. things would go a lot smoother.

  448. You know,

  449. if the Sunday school,

  450. if the singers,

  451. if everybody's just...

  452. See,

  453. that's the problem.

  454. We're so deeply entrenched

  455. in thinking

  456. that we're the center

  457. so that even

  458. when we think

  459. of repentance,

  460. we think it's all about us.

  461. That's why

  462. there's lots of people

  463. in Canada

  464. who asked Jesus

  465. into their life

  466. 27 times

  467. and have been baptized

  468. five times

  469. because the first time

  470. they didn't have

  471. the fine emotional feelings

  472. they had to have

  473. or their baptism

  474. wasn't the profound

  475. religious experience

  476. they thought it should be.

  477. And so,

  478. therefore,

  479. their repentance

  480. is all ultimately,

  481. ironically,

  482. about me.

  483. Now,

  484. isn't that absurd?

  485. If repentance

  486. is about coming to God

  487. and it's all about me,

  488. like there's something

  489. deeply out of whack

  490. about that.

  491. But the fact of the matter is

  492. is that we can be

  493. out of the whack

  494. about ourselves

  495. most of the time

  496. and think it's normal

  497. and not even be shocked.

  498. You see,

  499. the very,

  500. very first thing

  501. that these first two parables do

  502. is they want us

  503. trying to communicate

  504. several things.

  505. First,

  506. to rock our world,

  507. to knock us off balance,

  508. to understand

  509. that one moment,

  510. this is all about repentance,

  511. but I do nothing.

  512. I do nothing.

  513. I do nothing.

  514. The first thing

  515. is to understand,

  516. the Bible's trying

  517. to understand it

  518. is that Jesus

  519. left heaven.

  520. He set aside

  521. his glory

  522. and divine prerogatives.

  523. He set aside

  524. his appearance

  525. as God,

  526. his majesty.

  527. He still remains

  528. fully God.

  529. He brings into himself

  530. our human nature.

  531. He's born

  532. of a young woman

  533. in a remote part

  534. of the Roman Empire

  535. at a time

  536. that the Jewish people

  537. were under occupation.

  538. He lives a normal

  539. working class life.

  540. He has three years

  541. of teaching.

  542. He has very few possessions.

  543. He teaches.

  544. He does all of this thing,

  545. but it's all a story.

  546. Jesus knows we're lost.

  547. Jesus knows

  548. that we were made for God.

  549. Jesus knows

  550. that we don't know

  551. that we're lost.

  552. Jesus goes seeking for us.

  553. Jesus is the one

  554. who provides

  555. everything that is needed

  556. for us to go home

  557. to where we truly belong.

  558. And Jesus is the one

  559. who finds us.

  560. And our repentance

  561. is just us

  562. entering into something

  563. that Jesus does.

  564. In a sense,

  565. the emotions

  566. we might or might not

  567. feel in repentance

  568. is the emotion

  569. we get

  570. when the coin

  571. feels the hand

  572. of the lady

  573. on it.

  574. It's

  575. the sheep

  576. being found,

  577. but it's all

  578. from first to last

  579. the work of Jesus.

  580. And we,

  581. in a sense,

  582. are brought

  583. into that story,

  584. brought into

  585. what he does,

  586. and repentance

  587. is just that

  588. being brought

  589. into it.

  590. It's something

  591. that Jesus

  592. does it all.

  593. You can imagine

  594. how terrifying

  595. this would be

  596. to the Pharisees

  597. and Sadducees.

  598. Good grief.

  599. Does that mean

  600. we don't have

  601. to do anything?

  602. Does that mean

  603. we can live

  604. completely and utterly

  605. immoral,

  606. dissolute lives?

  607. Jesus,

  608. you are telling

  609. something which is

  610. deeply troubling

  611. and worrying

  612. and will only lead

  613. to a completely

  614. terrible thing.

  615. Jesus,

  616. the stories

  617. aren't going to deal

  618. with that.

  619. Jesus just stays

  620. on his own track,

  621. and that's the

  622. first thing

  623. that we have

  624. to see about

  625. this story.

  626. It's all done

  627. by Jesus.

  628. And then Jesus

  629. tells the third

  630. parable,

  631. because obviously

  632. there's some

  633. other complexities

  634. to this image.

  635. If you could put up

  636. the third and final

  637. picture,

  638. and it's just

  639. the very,

  640. very,

  641. very famous

  642. picture by Rembrandt.

  643. 17th century,

  644. the return

  645. of the prodigal.

  646. Beautiful picture.

  647. Beautiful,

  648. beautiful painting.

  649. Quiet colors,

  650. tenderness.

  651. And this is inspired

  652. by the third parable

  653. that Jesus tells.

  654. Verse 11.

  655. And he said,

  656. there was a man

  657. who had two sons.

  658. Let's sort of pause

  659. there for a second.

  660. There's some things

  661. in the original language

  662. which we can't get

  663. in English.

  664. I suppose if we wanted

  665. to try to play around

  666. with the Bible,

  667. you'd maybe be able

  668. to do it,

  669. but it would still

  670. confuse people.

  671. It would look very,

  672. very odd.

  673. But in the original

  674. language,

  675. there was a way

  676. that a particular

  677. word or phrase

  678. could be made

  679. emphatic

  680. so that people

  681. who are reading it

  682. would understand

  683. that,

  684. whoa,

  685. okay,

  686. this is like,

  687. it would be as if,

  688. you know,

  689. it would be as if

  690. you're reading this

  691. on the page

  692. and as the cursor

  693. touches it,

  694. it blows up

  695. so that you realize

  696. it's emphatic

  697. or it's bolded

  698. or that there's

  699. arrows towards it.

  700. And in this story,

  701. the way it begins,

  702. there was a man

  703. and man,

  704. the father,

  705. is emphatic.

  706. See,

  707. in fact,

  708. some ways,

  709. you see,

  710. Rembrandt catches

  711. that just a little bit,

  712. not as much as he should

  713. because,

  714. you see,

  715. really,

  716. your eyes are naturally

  717. drawn to the face

  718. of the father

  719. in that picture,

  720. aren't you?

  721. In some ways,

  722. in a very deep way,

  723. Rembrandt got it.

  724. that this is actually,

  725. even though it's called

  726. often the parable

  727. of the prodigal son,

  728. it's actually the story

  729. of the father.

  730. The father is the key actor

  731. in the story,

  732. the dad,

  733. not the two boys.

  734. And so here's,

  735. so here,

  736. now that there was a man

  737. who had two sons

  738. and the younger said

  739. to the father,

  740. father,

  741. give me the share

  742. of property

  743. that is coming to me.

  744. And he divided

  745. his property

  746. among them.

  747. Just sort of pause

  748. there for a second.

  749. In the original language,

  750. the word property

  751. is actually the life.

  752. Give me the share

  753. of the life

  754. that is coming to me.

  755. So what he's actually

  756. asking is

  757. that the son

  758. wishes that his father

  759. was dead

  760. so that he could

  761. collect his inheritance.

  762. inheritance.

  763. That's,

  764. that's what the son

  765. is asking.

  766. The son is really

  767. saying to the dad,

  768. dad,

  769. I wish you were dead

  770. so I could have

  771. the inheritance,

  772. that share of your life

  773. which is due me.

  774. And this is a,

  775. you know,

  776. it's,

  777. once again,

  778. it's a very,

  779. very apparently

  780. unspiritual idea.

  781. But one of the things

  782. that the Bible

  783. is trying to communicate

  784. to us all the time

  785. is that

  786. a deep part

  787. of every human being

  788. wishes God dead.

  789. A deep part

  790. of every human being

  791. is wishing God dead

  792. and that we could

  793. have his stuff.

  794. And many of us

  795. go to work

  796. Monday to Friday

  797. with a boss

  798. that acts that out.

  799. I'm God.

  800. Many of us maybe

  801. are in marriages

  802. or have friends

  803. like that.

  804. But the Bible

  805. is going to try

  806. to communicate

  807. to us

  808. that every single

  809. one of us

  810. at some level

  811. desires God dead.

  812. God is dead.

  813. I want his stuff.

  814. I want his job.

  815. Who better than me?

  816. No, you can't say

  817. that to yourself.

  818. I'm saying that, okay?

  819. I'm going to be one God.

  820. So the young son

  821. wants the father dead.

  822. Verse 12 again.

  823. And the younger of them

  824. said to his father,

  825. Father,

  826. give me the share

  827. of property,

  828. the inheritance

  829. that is coming to me.

  830. And this is

  831. just a parable.

  832. It's really funny

  833. reading academic commentaries.

  834. They get in long discussions

  835. about completely irrelevant

  836. parts of the story.

  837. Jesus isn't asking

  838. you to start to analyze

  839. all the different intricacies

  840. of how this would go about.

  841. It's a story.

  842. Get to the point, okay?

  843. So anyway,

  844. I had to keep reading

  845. the commentaries.

  846. Good grief,

  847. you missed the point.

  848. Anyway,

  849. not many days later,

  850. the younger son

  851. gathered,

  852. verse 13,

  853. all that he had

  854. and took a journey

  855. into a far country.

  856. And there he squandered

  857. his property

  858. in reckless living,

  859. in riotous living.

  860. In other words,

  861. he did a lot of

  862. very, very naughty things

  863. and completely blew

  864. all the wad of money.

  865. In verse 14,

  866. and when he had spent

  867. everything,

  868. a severe famine

  869. arose in that country

  870. and he began

  871. to be in need.

  872. So he went

  873. and hired himself

  874. out to one of the citizens

  875. of that country

  876. who sent him

  877. into his field

  878. to feed pigs.

  879. And he was longing

  880. to be fed

  881. with the pods

  882. that the pigs ate

  883. and no one

  884. gave him anything.

  885. And in the original language,

  886. no one

  887. is emphatic.

  888. It's bolded.

  889. So the story

  890. is trying to say

  891. that this young guy

  892. there in the rags,

  893. he blows everything

  894. and now he has to go

  895. and hire himself

  896. out to a pagan

  897. and the pagan

  898. gives him a job

  899. feeding the pigs.

  900. He still doesn't

  901. get enough to eat.

  902. The famines come.

  903. He's completely

  904. and utterly alone.

  905. Now, here's a little bit

  906. of a pause.

  907. I like reading

  908. movie reviews.

  909. I like watching movies.

  910. And there's one

  911. movie reviewer

  912. that I read

  913. fairly regularly

  914. who will remain nameless.

  915. But this particular

  916. movie reviewer,

  917. I know that

  918. if they don't like

  919. a movie,

  920. it might mean

  921. I like it.

  922. If they really

  923. like a movie,

  924. I probably won't

  925. like it.

  926. Because this movie

  927. reviewer,

  928. the type of movies

  929. that they like,

  930. I'm trying to make sure

  931. you can't figure out

  932. who it is.

  933. You know,

  934. if it ends

  935. with everybody

  936. depressed

  937. and committing

  938. suicide

  939. and lives ruined,

  940. it gets lots

  941. of stars.

  942. Generally speaking,

  943. I don't want to

  944. watch a movie

  945. that's all about

  946. complete and utter

  947. failure

  948. and depression.

  949. There's enough

  950. depressing things

  951. in the world,

  952. I don't want to

  953. usually spend

  954. two hours

  955. watching a movie

  956. that wants to

  957. make me depressed.

  958. But if we were

  959. watching one of

  960. those types

  961. of movies,

  962. it would end

  963. right here.

  964. Young guy

  965. starts off

  966. rich,

  967. privileged,

  968. the party guy,

  969. the fraternities,

  970. he wishes

  971. the dad dead,

  972. he wastes his money,

  973. the famine comes,

  974. he's completely

  975. and utterly

  976. desolate,

  977. and then the

  978. credits roll.

  979. And this movie

  980. reviewer will give

  981. it five stars.

  982. Maybe you like

  983. movies like that,

  984. that's fine,

  985. we can all like

  986. different types

  987. of movies.

  988. But the parable

  989. could end there,

  990. and some people

  991. think it would be

  992. a better story

  993. if it ended there,

  994. but the parable

  995. doesn't end there.

  996. The parable

  997. is going to go

  998. to another part,

  999. and here's what

  1000. happens in verse 17.

  1001. But when the

  1002. young guy

  1003. came to himself,

  1004. you might not

  1005. have noticed

  1006. when I was,

  1007. I mentioned this

  1008. a little bit

  1009. in my prayers.

  1010. One of the

  1011. interesting things

  1012. about this story

  1013. is that coming

  1014. to ourselves

  1015. and coming

  1016. to Jesus

  1017. aren't

  1018. contradictions,

  1019. but fit

  1020. together.

  1021. You see,

  1022. it's part of

  1023. this biblical

  1024. idea that

  1025. just as on

  1026. one part,

  1027. there's part

  1028. of every single

  1029. human being,

  1030. it doesn't matter

  1031. if you're

  1032. Pope Francis,

  1033. it doesn't matter

  1034. if you're Billy Graham,

  1035. it doesn't matter

  1036. if you're George

  1037. Sinclair,

  1038. it doesn't matter

  1039. if you're Mother Teresa,

  1040. it doesn't matter

  1041. if you're Joe Blow

  1042. or Susie Smith,

  1043. that there's part

  1044. of every single

  1045. human being

  1046. that is in rebellion

  1047. against God

  1048. and wants God dead.

  1049. But the other part

  1050. of the biblical truth

  1051. is a deeper,

  1052. older truth

  1053. that God really

  1054. did make us

  1055. for himself,

  1056. that he made us

  1057. to fit into

  1058. this created order.

  1059. And so at a

  1060. very,

  1061. very deeper level

  1062. that when we

  1063. start to come

  1064. back to God,

  1065. we're also

  1066. actually coming

  1067. into our right

  1068. mind.

  1069. What we were

  1070. made for,

  1071. what really

  1072. fits us.

  1073. Verse 17,

  1074. but when he

  1075. came to himself,

  1076. he said,

  1077. how many of my

  1078. father's hired

  1079. servants have

  1080. more than enough

  1081. bread,

  1082. but I perish

  1083. here with hunger.

  1084. I will arise

  1085. and go to my

  1086. father and I

  1087. will say to him,

  1088. father,

  1089. I have sinned

  1090. against heaven

  1091. and before you.

  1092. I am no longer

  1093. worthy to be

  1094. called your son.

  1095. Treat me as one

  1096. of your hired

  1097. servants.

  1098. Just sort of

  1099. notice two things

  1100. in that text.

  1101. It's a whole

  1102. other series.

  1103. It's a whole

  1104. ethics lecture.

  1105. But one of the

  1106. things which

  1107. distinguishes the

  1108. Christian understanding

  1109. of the world from

  1110. non-Christian

  1111. understanding of the

  1112. world is that

  1113. every wrong act,

  1114. if I steal money

  1115. from this congregation,

  1116. I've not only

  1117. harmed you,

  1118. but I've wronged

  1119. God.

  1120. That every wrong

  1121. act is not only

  1122. something wrong

  1123. against a person

  1124. or an animal

  1125. or the created

  1126. order,

  1127. but it's always

  1128. as well a

  1129. wronging of God.

  1130. That's why the

  1131. young son says,

  1132. father,

  1133. I've sinned

  1134. against heaven,

  1135. in other words,

  1136. you,

  1137. and you.

  1138. I've sinned

  1139. against you,

  1140. dad,

  1141. and I've sinned

  1142. against God.

  1143. And then he's

  1144. going to go back

  1145. to his father.

  1146. He's not going

  1147. to make any

  1148. excuses.

  1149. And in fact,

  1150. in the original

  1151. language,

  1152. there's three levels

  1153. of servants

  1154. slash slaves.

  1155. And the word

  1156. which is used

  1157. here is the

  1158. lowest of the

  1159. three.

  1160. But he's going

  1161. to go back

  1162. to his father

  1163. and he's going

  1164. to say,

  1165. father,

  1166. here's what

  1167. we see,

  1168. right?

  1169. Part of that.

  1170. Just take me

  1171. back as the

  1172. lowest servant

  1173. you possibly

  1174. have.

  1175. Verse 20.

  1176. So he arose

  1177. and came

  1178. to his father.

  1179. But while

  1180. the young man

  1181. was still

  1182. a long way

  1183. off,

  1184. his father

  1185. saw him

  1186. and felt

  1187. compassion

  1188. and ran

  1189. and embraced

  1190. him

  1191. and kissed

  1192. him.

  1193. That's

  1194. obviously

  1195. going to happen

  1196. just after

  1197. this picture

  1198. right here.

  1199. in the

  1200. original

  1201. language,

  1202. the father

  1203. seen

  1204. is emphatic.

  1205. In other

  1206. words,

  1207. Jesus is

  1208. telling the

  1209. original

  1210. hearers,

  1211. one moment,

  1212. remember this,

  1213. this is not a

  1214. story about

  1215. the younger

  1216. son,

  1217. this is a

  1218. story about

  1219. the father.

  1220. That's

  1221. emphatic.

  1222. And so

  1223. what's

  1224. emphasized

  1225. is not

  1226. so much

  1227. the journey

  1228. of the

  1229. son back,

  1230. but that

  1231. the father

  1232. sees the

  1233. son long

  1234. before the

  1235. son sees

  1236. the father.

  1237. And long

  1238. before the

  1239. son realizes

  1240. that the

  1241. father is

  1242. there,

  1243. the father

  1244. does something

  1245. which an

  1246. ancient Jewish

  1247. father would

  1248. not have

  1249. done,

  1250. he runs.

  1251. And he

  1252. runs to

  1253. the son

  1254. and throws

  1255. himself upon

  1256. the son.

  1257. And if we

  1258. were watching

  1259. a typical

  1260. Hollywood movie,

  1261. that's how

  1262. the movie

  1263. would end,

  1264. right?

  1265. I mean,

  1266. if the

  1267. movie can't

  1268. end with

  1269. everybody

  1270. clapping,

  1271. or if the

  1272. movie can't

  1273. end with

  1274. the guy

  1275. and the

  1276. girl kissing,

  1277. then the

  1278. movie will

  1279. end with

  1280. some type

  1281. of reconciliation

  1282. like that.

  1283. That's the

  1284. type of movie

  1285. that Disney

  1286. likes.

  1287. That's the

  1288. type of movie

  1289. that's very,

  1290. very popular

  1291. in our

  1292. culture.

  1293. It ends

  1294. with the

  1295. father and

  1296. the son

  1297. reconciled,

  1298. hugging,

  1299. and all that

  1300. other messy

  1301. stuff is not

  1302. necessarily

  1303. discussed,

  1304. and the

  1305. credits roll

  1306. and some

  1307. nice piece

  1308. of music

  1309. that hopefully

  1310. will end up

  1311. being very

  1312. popular goes

  1313. in the

  1314. credits,

  1315. and we all

  1316. get up and

  1317. walk out of

  1318. the theater,

  1319. and we've

  1320. now watched

  1321. a Disney

  1322. film.

  1323. But Jesus

  1324. doesn't end

  1325. the parable

  1326. where Disney

  1327. would end

  1328. the parable.

  1329. Jesus is

  1330. going to go

  1331. after the

  1332. heart,

  1333. not the

  1334. emotions,

  1335. but the

  1336. center of

  1337. who we

  1338. are.

  1339. He's going

  1340. to figure

  1341. out a little

  1342. bit more

  1343. fully what's

  1344. going on

  1345. with the

  1346. son,

  1347. and that

  1348. continues in

  1349. verse 21.

  1350. The son

  1351. has his

  1352. sinner's

  1353. prayer all

  1354. prepared.

  1355. I don't

  1356. know if

  1357. you're from

  1358. an evangelical

  1359. type of

  1360. background,

  1361. but one

  1362. of the

  1363. reasons that

  1364. sometimes people

  1365. feel they

  1366. have to keep

  1367. asking Jesus

  1368. into their

  1369. life to

  1370. save them

  1371. or be

  1372. baptized is

  1373. because he

  1374. didn't quite

  1375. get the

  1376. words of

  1377. the sinner's

  1378. prayer right.

  1379. As if

  1380. sinner's

  1381. prayer is

  1382. like one

  1383. of those

  1384. long

  1385. passwords you

  1386. get from

  1387. a bank

  1388. that has

  1389. 15 different

  1390. characters,

  1391. and if you

  1392. don't get

  1393. every single

  1394. character right,

  1395. the web

  1396. page doesn't

  1397. let you

  1398. log in.

  1399. And a lot

  1400. of people

  1401. think that

  1402. the sinner's

  1403. prayer is

  1404. like a

  1405. long,

  1406. complicated

  1407. log

  1408. in

  1409. ID and

  1410. password,

  1411. and you've

  1412. got to get

  1413. it all

  1414. right,

  1415. or God

  1416. will just

  1417. go,

  1418. good grief,

  1419. I'm going

  1420. to shut

  1421. this page

  1422. down,

  1423. they can't

  1424. get the

  1425. stupid

  1426. web address

  1427. right.

  1428. And that's

  1429. how a lot

  1430. of Christians

  1431. somehow

  1432. think.

  1433. So the

  1434. son has

  1435. his sinner's

  1436. prayer ready,

  1437. and he

  1438. starts into

  1439. it in

  1440. verse 21,

  1441. and the

  1442. son said

  1443. to him,

  1444. I guess

  1445. that's what's

  1446. going on

  1447. right now,

  1448. the son's

  1449. kneeling,

  1450. and says,

  1451. Father,

  1452. I have

  1453. sinned

  1454. against

  1455. heaven

  1456. and before

  1457. you,

  1458. and I

  1459. am no

  1460. longer

  1461. worthy to

  1462. be called

  1463. your son.

  1464. And you

  1465. know what's

  1466. really,

  1467. really neat

  1468. is that he

  1469. gets two-thirds

  1470. through the way

  1471. of the prayer,

  1472. and the

  1473. father interrupts

  1474. him.

  1475. Father

  1476. stops him.

  1477. Word for

  1478. word,

  1479. two-thirds

  1480. of it is

  1481. word for

  1482. word what

  1483. was just

  1484. he prepared

  1485. his sinner's

  1486. prayer,

  1487. and the

  1488. father

  1489. interrupts

  1490. him.

  1491. You see,

  1492. God is

  1493. not waiting

  1494. for you

  1495. and me

  1496. to get

  1497. a sinner's

  1498. prayer

  1499. right,

  1500. like it's

  1501. some password

  1502. to log

  1503. into a

  1504. web page.

  1505. Why?

  1506. Because it's

  1507. not really

  1508. a story

  1509. about the

  1510. younger son,

  1511. it's a

  1512. story about

  1513. the father.

  1514. Why?

  1515. Because remember,

  1516. the sheep

  1517. did nothing,

  1518. neither did

  1519. the coin,

  1520. it's all

  1521. the shepherd,

  1522. it's all

  1523. the woman,

  1524. and here

  1525. the father

  1526. is the

  1527. center of

  1528. the action,

  1529. and it's

  1530. all because

  1531. of what

  1532. Jesus has

  1533. done for

  1534. us on

  1535. the cross

  1536. that we

  1537. can be

  1538. reconciled

  1539. to him,

  1540. and it's

  1541. all because

  1542. he has

  1543. sought us

  1544. that we

  1545. can be

  1546. found.

  1547. The father

  1548. has to come

  1549. and realize

  1550. that he's

  1551. part of

  1552. this drama

  1553. that's all

  1554. about Jesus

  1555. coming and

  1556. seeking us

  1557. in the

  1558. father's

  1559. heart for

  1560. us,

  1561. and that's

  1562. the overwhelming

  1563. heart,

  1564. the overwhelming

  1565. action,

  1566. and we get

  1567. included,

  1568. we get

  1569. found,

  1570. and so it's

  1571. showing here

  1572. a little bit

  1573. of the inner

  1574. dynamic,

  1575. but we only

  1576. start to go

  1577. a little bit

  1578. of the way

  1579. through it,

  1580. and the father

  1581. doesn't even

  1582. say,

  1583. well,

  1584. actually,

  1585. son,

  1586. you should

  1587. have said

  1588. this.

  1589. It just

  1590. starts,

  1591. and the

  1592. father says,

  1593. and the

  1594. father says,

  1595. bring,

  1596. verse 22,

  1597. bring quickly

  1598. the best

  1599. robe,

  1600. the best

  1601. robe would

  1602. have been

  1603. his.

  1604. He clothes

  1605. his son

  1606. with his

  1607. robe.

  1608. I mean,

  1609. good grief,

  1610. you can just

  1611. imagine when

  1612. St. Paul

  1613. heard this

  1614. later on,

  1615. and now you

  1616. can understand

  1617. a little bit

  1618. about the

  1619. book of

  1620. Galatians,

  1621. and the

  1622. book of

  1623. Romans,

  1624. and the

  1625. book of

  1626. Philippians,

  1627. and the

  1628. book of

  1629. Colossians,

  1630. and you

  1631. can understand

  1632. Thessalonians,

  1633. and you can

  1634. understand this,

  1635. that you can

  1636. understand other

  1637. Christians,

  1638. Hebrews,

  1639. and John,

  1640. and they all

  1641. talk about

  1642. being clothed

  1643. with the

  1644. righteousness

  1645. of Christ,

  1646. that we do

  1647. not,

  1648. in a sense,

  1649. come before

  1650. God with

  1651. our own

  1652. good deeds,

  1653. our own

  1654. discipleship,

  1655. our own

  1656. exemplary

  1657. conduct,

  1658. that we only

  1659. come before

  1660. the father.

  1661. He does

  1662. not weigh

  1663. our merits,

  1664. but pardons

  1665. our offenses.

  1666. He clothes

  1667. us with

  1668. his righteousness,

  1669. and this

  1670. story of

  1671. the father

  1672. and the

  1673. two sons,

  1674. and this

  1675. image that

  1676. the son,

  1677. who's completely

  1678. and utterly

  1679. destitute,

  1680. who can't

  1681. even finish

  1682. the sinner's

  1683. prayer,

  1684. that before

  1685. he finishes

  1686. the sinner's

  1687. prayer,

  1688. the father

  1689. clothes him

  1690. with his

  1691. robe,

  1692. the best

  1693. robe,

  1694. and so he

  1695. will stand

  1696. before the

  1697. father,

  1698. clothed with

  1699. the father's

  1700. robe.

  1701. in the

  1702. father's

  1703. embrace.

  1704. That's what

  1705. Jesus does

  1706. for us on

  1707. the cross.

  1708. And our

  1709. repentance,

  1710. our

  1711. repentance,

  1712. our

  1713. repentance,

  1714. it's really

  1715. just God

  1716. doing all

  1717. this stuff

  1718. for us.

  1719. You know

  1720. when I say

  1721. the mission

  1722. statement of

  1723. this church

  1724. is making

  1725. disciples gripped

  1726. by the gospel

  1727. living for

  1728. his glory.

  1729. What a

  1730. difference it

  1731. makes to be

  1732. gripped by a

  1733. story like

  1734. this.

  1735. To be

  1736. gripped by a

  1737. story like

  1738. this will

  1739. change how

  1740. we live.

  1741. It doesn't

  1742. mean we

  1743. live a

  1744. certain way

  1745. so that the

  1746. father will

  1747. put his

  1748. robe upon

  1749. us, but

  1750. to understand

  1751. that he

  1752. sees us,

  1753. he finds

  1754. us, he

  1755. clothes us,

  1756. as that

  1757. story grips

  1758. us, we

  1759. are changed

  1760. in how we

  1761. act.

  1762. But it

  1763. goes on,

  1764. so verse

  1765. 22 again,

  1766. bring quickly

  1767. the best

  1768. robe and

  1769. put it on

  1770. him and

  1771. put a ring

  1772. on his

  1773. hand and

  1774. shoes on

  1775. his feet and

  1776. bring the

  1777. fattened calf

  1778. and kill it

  1779. and let us

  1780. eat and

  1781. celebrate.

  1782. For this

  1783. my son was

  1784. dead and

  1785. is alive

  1786. again.

  1787. He was

  1788. lost and

  1789. is found

  1790. and they

  1791. began to

  1792. celebrate.

  1793. Remember

  1794. the earlier

  1795. stories of

  1796. the shepherd

  1797. and the

  1798. celebrations

  1799. all the way

  1800. through it

  1801. and they

  1802. celebrate.

  1803. Now you

  1804. know,

  1805. remember I

  1806. said to

  1807. you, my

  1808. movie reviewer

  1809. who likes

  1810. dark, depressing

  1811. movies and

  1812. they would

  1813. stop movies

  1814. at one point

  1815. and Walt

  1816. Disney would

  1817. say, no, no,

  1818. no, no, you

  1819. don't stop

  1820. movies then.

  1821. You keep

  1822. going, oh,

  1823. and the

  1824. hugs.

  1825. You stop

  1826. the movie

  1827. there.

  1828. Soundtrack,

  1829. theme song,

  1830. inspiring music

  1831. and then, you

  1832. know, us

  1833. evangelicals

  1834. will say, no,

  1835. no, no, you

  1836. don't stop

  1837. the story then.

  1838. You keep

  1839. going and you

  1840. stop the story

  1841. with the

  1842. sinner's prayer

  1843. clothed and

  1844. the robe

  1845. and then we

  1846. would want to

  1847. stop the

  1848. story there

  1849. but Jesus

  1850. doesn't stop

  1851. the story

  1852. there because

  1853. Jesus is going

  1854. after our

  1855. heart.

  1856. And so Jesus

  1857. continues the

  1858. story because

  1859. there's another

  1860. brother.

  1861. Now, his

  1862. older son was

  1863. in the field

  1864. and as he

  1865. came and drew

  1866. near, that's

  1867. verse 25,

  1868. near to the

  1869. house he heard

  1870. music and

  1871. dancing.

  1872. one 19th

  1873. century commentator

  1874. had a long

  1875. aside on

  1876. whether or

  1877. not this

  1878. Bible passage

  1879. justified

  1880. Christians

  1881. dancing.

  1882. He tried to

  1883. show that it

  1884. didn't.

  1885. I'm neutral

  1886. on the

  1887. subject.

  1888. Although if

  1889. you ever saw

  1890. me dance,

  1891. you'd say

  1892. Christians

  1893. shouldn't

  1894. dance.

  1895. This is how

  1896. I dance.

  1897. I just jump

  1898. up and down,

  1899. probably not in

  1900. rhythm.

  1901. But anyway,

  1902. we won't go

  1903. any further

  1904. with that.

  1905. And he

  1906. called one

  1907. of the

  1908. servants and

  1909. asked what

  1910. these things

  1911. meant.

  1912. This is the

  1913. older brother.

  1914. And the

  1915. servant said

  1916. to the

  1917. older brother,

  1918. your brother

  1919. has come

  1920. and your

  1921. father has

  1922. killed the

  1923. fattened

  1924. calf because

  1925. he has

  1926. received him

  1927. back safe

  1928. and sound.

  1929. But the

  1930. older brother

  1931. was angry

  1932. and refused

  1933. to go in.

  1934. His father

  1935. came out

  1936. and entreated,

  1937. implored the

  1938. older son.

  1939. But the

  1940. older son

  1941. answered his

  1942. father,

  1943. look,

  1944. these many

  1945. years I have

  1946. served you and

  1947. I never

  1948. disobeyed your

  1949. command,

  1950. yet you

  1951. never gave

  1952. me a

  1953. young goat

  1954. that I

  1955. might celebrate

  1956. with my

  1957. friends.

  1958. But when

  1959. this son

  1960. of yours

  1961. came who

  1962. has devoured

  1963. your property

  1964. with prostitutes,

  1965. you killed

  1966. the fattened

  1967. calf for him.

  1968. What is it,

  1969. the heart of

  1970. the older

  1971. son?

  1972. For it's

  1973. all I,

  1974. all me.

  1975. You know

  1976. what?

  1977. he understands

  1978. that all

  1979. the years

  1980. he was

  1981. serving his

  1982. father and

  1983. with the

  1984. father,

  1985. it was

  1986. like being

  1987. an unpaid

  1988. slave.

  1989. He

  1990. portrays

  1991. his time

  1992. with the

  1993. father as

  1994. if he

  1995. is

  1996. feeding

  1997. pigs and

  1998. is hungry.

  1999. he's the

  2000. religious

  2001. one.

  2002. And all

  2003. his

  2004. servitude,

  2005. all his

  2006. serving and

  2007. being with

  2008. God has

  2009. done.

  2010. He comes to

  2011. the church

  2012. services,

  2013. goes to the

  2014. Bible study

  2015. groups,

  2016. helps out,

  2017. and all he

  2018. feels is good

  2019. grief.

  2020. just one

  2021. menial task

  2022. after another,

  2023. I feel like

  2024. I'm serving

  2025. pigs and

  2026. not getting

  2027. enough to

  2028. eat.

  2029. His body

  2030. is close

  2031. to God,

  2032. but his

  2033. heart is

  2034. completely

  2035. and utterly

  2036. far from

  2037. him,

  2038. and he's

  2039. filled with

  2040. self-righteousness.

  2041. The

  2042. father

  2043. entreats

  2044. him,

  2045. verse 31,

  2046. son,

  2047. you are

  2048. always with

  2049. me,

  2050. and all

  2051. that's

  2052. mine is

  2053. yours.

  2054. The father's

  2055. not going

  2056. to say

  2057. whether or

  2058. not any

  2059. of that

  2060. is true,

  2061. just the

  2062. way he

  2063. would have

  2064. yelled it

  2065. at the

  2066. father,

  2067. and what

  2068. he revealed

  2069. his heart

  2070. reveals that

  2071. none of

  2072. what he

  2073. said is

  2074. true.

  2075. It was

  2076. fitting to

  2077. celebrate,

  2078. son,

  2079. you're always

  2080. from,

  2081. verse 32,

  2082. it was

  2083. fitting to

  2084. celebrate

  2085. and be

  2086. glad,

  2087. for this

  2088. your brother

  2089. was dead

  2090. and is

  2091. alive.

  2092. He was

  2093. lost and

  2094. is found.

  2095. Here's how

  2096. I just want

  2097. to close

  2098. with two

  2099. very simple

  2100. things.

  2101. The first

  2102. thing is

  2103. this,

  2104. because we

  2105. are fallen

  2106. creatures

  2107. in rebellion

  2108. against God,

  2109. we want

  2110. to divide

  2111. the world

  2112. between older

  2113. sons and

  2114. younger

  2115. brothers.

  2116. But let

  2117. me tell

  2118. you this,

  2119. the division

  2120. between older

  2121. sons and

  2122. younger

  2123. brothers goes

  2124. right through

  2125. each single

  2126. one of us.

  2127. The distinction

  2128. between older

  2129. brothers and

  2130. younger sons

  2131. goes right

  2132. down the

  2133. center of

  2134. who you

  2135. and I

  2136. are.

  2137. There's

  2138. not a

  2139. single person

  2140. here,

  2141. and I

  2142. include

  2143. myself,

  2144. who does

  2145. not have

  2146. some part

  2147. of the

  2148. older

  2149. brother in

  2150. them.

  2151. And every

  2152. single one

  2153. of us,

  2154. whether we

  2155. recognize it

  2156. or not,

  2157. are a

  2158. younger son.

  2159. And we

  2160. need to

  2161. understand to

  2162. live like a

  2163. younger son,

  2164. not in terms

  2165. of what got

  2166. him in

  2167. trouble,

  2168. but that we

  2169. need to come

  2170. to the

  2171. father.

  2172. And the

  2173. other thing

  2174. is, you

  2175. know, this

  2176. whole text

  2177. says that if

  2178. you've come

  2179. to the

  2180. father like

  2181. a younger

  2182. son, if

  2183. you recognize

  2184. that you're

  2185. that lost

  2186. sheep, if

  2187. you're that

  2188. lost coin,

  2189. that Jesus

  2190. has done

  2191. what it

  2192. has taken

  2193. to bring

  2194. you back

  2195. to himself,

  2196. then how

  2197. can you

  2198. and I

  2199. not seek

  2200. the lost?

  2201. How can

  2202. you and I

  2203. not pray

  2204. for it?

  2205. How can

  2206. you and I

  2207. not hope

  2208. that the

  2209. father rid

  2210. us of

  2211. every aspect

  2212. of elder

  2213. brother,

  2214. older

  2215. brotherness

  2216. in our

  2217. lives,

  2218. and hope

  2219. and long,

  2220. hope and

  2221. long for

  2222. the lost

  2223. to be found,

  2224. the dead

  2225. to be made

  2226. alive?

  2227. Please

  2228. stand.

  2229. I'm going

  2230. to mess

  2231. with your

  2232. heads, I'm

  2233. not going

  2234. to give

  2235. you a

  2236. sinner's

  2237. prayer,

  2238. but I'm

  2239. going to

  2240. tell you

  2241. that some

  2242. of us

  2243. may be

  2244. the

  2245. Holy

  2246. Spirit

  2247. pressing

  2248. upon you

  2249. that you

  2250. need to

  2251. try to

  2252. do

  2253. some

  2254. type

  2255. of

  2256. business

  2257. with

  2258. God.

  2259. Some

  2260. of you

  2261. might

  2262. just

  2263. say,

  2264. Father,

  2265. I confess

  2266. that even

  2267. though I

  2268. have given

  2269. my life

  2270. to you,

  2271. I have

  2272. so much

  2273. of the

  2274. older

  2275. brother

  2276. in me,

  2277. and Father,

  2278. maybe for

  2279. the first

  2280. time,

  2281. or maybe

  2282. just the

  2283. courage to

  2284. say,

  2285. Father,

  2286. I hate

  2287. it.

  2288. I hate

  2289. it.

  2290. I don't

  2291. want to

  2292. have that

  2293. older

  2294. brother be

  2295. the dominant

  2296. voice in

  2297. my life.

  2298. And maybe

  2299. for some

  2300. of us,

  2301. we're saying,

  2302. you know,

  2303. I need to

  2304. be that

  2305. younger son

  2306. and come

  2307. to the

  2308. father.

  2309. And you

  2310. know what,

  2311. maybe all

  2312. you have

  2313. to do,

  2314. because God's

  2315. not looking

  2316. for perfect

  2317. prayer,

  2318. is all you

  2319. have to do

  2320. in your

  2321. heart and

  2322. soul and

  2323. point at

  2324. that picture

  2325. and say

  2326. to God,

  2327. God,

  2328. I want

  2329. that to

  2330. be me.

  2331. I want

  2332. that to

  2333. be me.

  2334. And because

  2335. it's all

  2336. about Jesus

  2337. finding the

  2338. sheep,

  2339. and Jesus

  2340. finding the

  2341. coin,

  2342. and Jesus

  2343. seeing us

  2344. when we're

  2345. a long

  2346. way off,

  2347. that'll

  2348. work just

  2349. fine.

  2350. Let's

  2351. bow our

  2352. heads in

  2353. prayer.

  2354. Father,

  2355. you know

  2356. how much

  2357. of the

  2358. older brother

  2359. is in

  2360. each of

  2361. us.

  2362. You know

  2363. how much

  2364. of the

  2365. older brother

  2366. is in

  2367. us as a

  2368. congregation.

  2369. Father,

  2370. we repent

  2371. of it.

  2372. We ask

  2373. Father that

  2374. you would

  2375. deliver us

  2376. from this.

  2377. We ask

  2378. Father that

  2379. your Holy

  2380. Spirit would

  2381. come into

  2382. our lives

  2383. and quieten

  2384. that,

  2385. still that,

  2386. heal that,

  2387. rebuke that,

  2388. help us to

  2389. put it to

  2390. death.

  2391. Father,

  2392. thank you

  2393. that Jesus

  2394. came to

  2395. seek and

  2396. save the

  2397. lost.

  2398. Jesus came

  2399. so that the

  2400. dead will

  2401. be made

  2402. alive,

  2403. that the

  2404. lost will

  2405. be found.

  2406. Thank you

  2407. Father for

  2408. Jesus,

  2409. for what he

  2410. did for us

  2411. on the

  2412. cross.

  2413. Father,

  2414. we are all

  2415. younger brothers

  2416. as well,

  2417. and we come

  2418. to Jesus

  2419. yet again.

  2420. We come

  2421. to you

  2422. Father yet

  2423. again.

  2424. We thank

  2425. you Father

  2426. that you

  2427. will in

  2428. no ways

  2429. cast out

  2430. any who

  2431. come to

  2432. you through

  2433. Jesus.

  2434. We thank

  2435. you Father

  2436. that you

  2437. will clothe

  2438. us with

  2439. your finest

  2440. robe as we

  2441. stand before

  2442. you.

  2443. No longer

  2444. destitute,

  2445. but embraced

  2446. by you and

  2447. clothed with

  2448. your finery,

  2449. not because of

  2450. our merits,

  2451. but because of

  2452. what Jesus

  2453. has done.

  2454. Father,

  2455. we ask

  2456. that you

  2457. would make

  2458. us disciples

  2459. gripped by

  2460. the gospel,

  2461. gripped by

  2462. these gospel

  2463. stories,

  2464. make us

  2465. disciples gripped

  2466. by the gospel,

  2467. living for

  2468. your glory,

  2469. seeking for

  2470. the lost,

  2471. praying for

  2472. the lost,

  2473. and putting

  2474. to death

  2475. the older

  2476. brother in

  2477. our hearts.

  2478. And all

  2479. this we ask

  2480. in the name

  2481. of Jesus,

  2482. your son,

  2483. and our

  2484. savior.

  2485. Amen.

  2486. Amen.
