  1. Father, we confess before you that unless your Holy Spirit moves in our minds and hearts and wills,

  2. the very depths of our soul, unless you, Father, move in us, we cannot understand your word correctly.

  3. So we ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would gently but deeply fall upon us,

  4. fall upon our bodies, fall upon our minds, fall upon our hearts and our wills.

  5. Father, may your Holy Spirit fall upon us and fan into flame within us

  6. that we might use the best of our mind and the best of our heart and the best of our will

  7. to seek to understand your word, but we know that that is never sufficient.

  8. So we ask, Father, that you would lead us ever more deeply into your word,

  9. that your word might go ever more deeply into us,

  10. and that we may bear much fruit for your glory in our day-to-day lives.

  11. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  12. Please be seated.

  13. Last week I didn't have a stopwatch.

  14. I have no idea how long I preach for, so that can be a bit of a dangerous thing.

  15. I'm going to do a couple of very un-Canadian things this morning.

  16. I'm going to maybe cause a little bit of stress in the room,

  17. and I'm sort of, I think, compelled to cause a little bit of stress in the room

  18. because of the nature of the biblical text that we're going to look at,

  19. and because, like, I'm going to mention creation and evolution and Christmas.

  20. And that, as soon as I mention creation and evolution and Christmas,

  21. in many Canadian contexts, it causes a little bit of stress.

  22. And you might wonder why on earth I'm going to do that.

  23. Andrew, could you put up the first slide, please?

  24. Could you, we don't have to say the verse thing.

  25. Could you read this with me, please?

  26. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  27. He was in the beginning with God.

  28. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

  29. So we're going to look at today.

  30. And the thing about this text is that it draws a...

  31. Actually, when I...

  32. You know, at first, when I was wanting to talk about this text,

  33. I wanted to say that it sort of drew a line in the sand,

  34. and then I realized after I'd been actually, you know, talking about it for a while,

  35. so in my own head, I talk about it in my head,

  36. that when I say drawing a line in the sand,

  37. drawing a line in the sand is a very, very arbitrary thing.

  38. You know, it's as if you have all this sand,

  39. you're just not going to retreat anymore,

  40. you're not going to give up anymore,

  41. you're going to draw this arbitrary line right here,

  42. and on the other side, but you're going to take your stand.

  43. And the fact of the matter is,

  44. is that this isn't drawing a line in the sand.

  45. This text is pointing out a grand canyon

  46. between what the Bible teaches and what a lot of...

  47. and basically everything else.

  48. And that causes a bit of stress for people

  49. when we realize that it's sort of pointing out a big grand canyon

  50. between what this text is claiming

  51. and to which is generally believed in our country

  52. and throughout the world.

  53. Because this text is making a very, very bold claim

  54. that, you know, look at the last sort of two and a half lines.

  55. All things were made through him,

  56. and without him was not anything made that was made.

  57. And the word made is a perfectly good word,

  58. but in the original language,

  59. it just says something...

  60. It goes sort of beyond the English word.

  61. It'd be awkward to translate the original language into English,

  62. but it actually...

  63. The word that we use here is made,

  64. actually in the original language,

  65. says cause to exist.

  66. Causes to exist.

  67. And so this text is making a very, very, very big claim

  68. that all things were caused to exist through him,

  69. and without him was not anything that was caused to exist

  70. that came into existence.

  71. That's what the text is saying.

  72. And it sort of flies in the face of what we learn

  73. or students learn.

  74. If you go to university, if you go to high school,

  75. go to elementary school in this country,

  76. where we're taught something very, very different.

  77. And I'm not going to solve all of that.

  78. I'm just trying to draw it out.

  79. But I want to say a couple of things about that.

  80. The first thing is that...

  81. I'm going to be very un-Canadian.

  82. Remember I mentioned at the beginning

  83. I was going to be very un-Canadian.

  84. Hopefully you'll extend me a little bit of grace.

  85. Here's the first thing about what this statement is

  86. and our culture.

  87. You're cutting me some slack, okay?

  88. Just for a moment.

  89. I'm actually a nice guy,

  90. even though I'm going to say something

  91. which is a very rude thing to say in Canada.

  92. And if you're here and you believe

  93. what I'm about to sort of make a comment about,

  94. I hope, you know, rather than being offended,

  95. like I'll buy you coffee sometime this week.

  96. I'll buy you lunch, okay?

  97. Like I'm actually a nice guy.

  98. But there's many people in our country

  99. who are, you know, who are Buddhists and Hindus

  100. and who believe in things like native spirituality.

  101. But who here really honestly for a second

  102. actually believes that any of the accounts

  103. of these things is actually a real account of anything?

  104. Like it's very un-Canadian to say

  105. that native spirituality can't be possibly true,

  106. but nobody believes that the world came to be

  107. because ravens dropping seeds

  108. or things are carried on the back of turtles

  109. or like nobody believes that.

  110. Nobody believes that that's the way things came to be, right?

  111. Like nobody does.

  112. Like if a person had a PhD in biochemistry

  113. and said that he'd like to teach a class in biochemistry

  114. and said that he was going to teach these things

  115. as part of his lecture at the university,

  116. he or she would be fired, right?

  117. I mean, it would be beyond mockery.

  118. In fact, if that was to happen at the Ottawa U or Carleton,

  119. it would be on everything.

  120. It would be on Letterman.

  121. It would be on the late night.

  122. It would be on all the comics

  123. and everybody would be making fun.

  124. And in fact, actually, in our culture,

  125. there's a dominant story

  126. about how all things have come into existence.

  127. But practically speaking, in our culture,

  128. there's not, you know, the, in a sense,

  129. I'll call it the atheistic option

  130. because that's actually what it is,

  131. the atheistic option and the Christian option

  132. and the Buddhist option and the Hindu option

  133. and the Cree option and the Algonquin option

  134. and the Navajo option.

  135. And that's, in fact, not the case, right?

  136. There's really only three options

  137. that people think about.

  138. And one of them, actually,

  139. scientists basically always will tell you

  140. that it's completely and utterly misleading.

  141. The misleading one is this idea

  142. that evolution is somehow making things

  143. better and better and better

  144. and that evolution causes things

  145. and that we're moving in this particular type of direction.

  146. And that's actually all it is

  147. is just a romantic type of pious,

  148. unfounded hope that science would have to say

  149. it's actually not scientifically true,

  150. that everything that happens

  151. is just a result of time and chance,

  152. that that's what evolution is.

  153. It's purely and utterly chance.

  154. There's no purpose.

  155. There's no such thing as better.

  156. There's really only next.

  157. And, obviously, it's a very, very uncomfortable belief

  158. and that's why people tend to quickly try to bring in

  159. other types of things of purpose.

  160. But it's actually, from a scientific level,

  161. all you can say is before,

  162. now, next.

  163. And what governs these changes

  164. is always just complete and utter chance,

  165. really.

  166. and then the only other option

  167. I mean and it's usually just mocked

  168. is the Christian option

  169. because I mean that would also get you fired

  170. maybe at Ottawa or Carleton

  171. but at least our culture makes fun of it

  172. like it's recognized that there is

  173. at least some type of a credibility

  174. or threat from it

  175. and I want to say that

  176. actually let's say this text again

  177. could you say it with me

  178. in the beginning was the word

  179. and the word was with God

  180. and the word was God

  181. he was in the beginning with God

  182. all things were made through him

  183. and without him was not anything made

  184. that was made

  185. that's a serious philosophical and scientific claim

  186. and it's that serious philosophical and scientific

  187. claim

  188. that

  189. that actually helped to cause the birth of all science

  190. and is the partially historically

  191. the basis by which scientists seek order

  192. in the world

  193. because there's a sense that there's a knowable God

  194. a creator and a plan and design

  195. and that you can seek after the outline of the plan

  196. and the outline of the design

  197. and it's a serious option

  198. be a whole other topic

  199. a little bit about how it is

  200. that we can reconcile this with science

  201. I think it's easily done

  202. I know that Christians can have

  203. on one side of the Grand Canyon

  204. the biblical side

  205. that Christians can differ over the age of the earth

  206. and a couple of other things

  207. but those are arguments on one side of the Grand Canyon

  208. it's different on the other side of the Grand Canyon

  209. and it's a serious claim

  210. I don't know how many of you have heard of the name of Thomas Nagel

  211. he's a serious atheistic philosopher

  212. often the more popular people who write books

  213. aren't necessarily considered to be serious philosophers

  214. but he is beyond any doubt

  215. a very serious philosopher

  216. and a long time atheist

  217. and he just I think about a year and a half ago

  218. caused a minor storm

  219. because he wrote a book

  220. showing why it is that evolution is not true

  221. and he's an atheist

  222. by the way at the beginning of the book

  223. and the end of the book

  224. he's still an atheist

  225. he just basically wanted to point out

  226. that while God obviously doesn't exist

  227. and therefore everything that came to be

  228. has to come to be by some means

  229. that in fact evolution can't account for it

  230. and that the sooner

  231. that scholars recognize that it can't account for it

  232. the proper account

  233. that will continue to show that there is no God

  234. will be found

  235. and that's a

  236. I mean he's one of a small group

  237. of serious atheist thinkers

  238. over the last five to ten years

  239. who've started to express doubts

  240. in academic journals and in books

  241. as to whether in fact Darwinistic evolution

  242. in fact can actually account

  243. for the existence of all things

  244. and every one of them who've written these books

  245. still continue to believe that God does not exist

  246. but they're merely pointing out

  247. the fact that the theory doesn't work

  248. that it can't account for important things

  249. I believe that if you study it

  250. we can't go into it right now in the sermon

  251. but it's very very interesting

  252. that John who's going to talk

  253. and this is one of the two classic texts

  254. as we go on to verse 14

  255. that John that gives one of the most classic accounts

  256. of the birth of Jesus

  257. begins it with where we as Canadian Christians

  258. are afraid to go

  259. which is to publicly claim

  260. that there is a God that does exist

  261. who is the one who's created all things

  262. and sustains all things

  263. that in fact

  264. if we were to watch a science fiction movie

  265. and in the science fiction movie

  266. going to unexplored places

  267. they come across

  268. an obviously very very ancient

  269. and spaceship with no creatures there

  270. and it's maybe the power source

  271. is no longer functioning

  272. and this ship of ours comes and discovers it

  273. and if that happened in a movie

  274. the very very obvious thing

  275. especially if it happened early on in the movie

  276. obviously it'd be the case

  277. that for the rest of the movie

  278. the movie is going to be consumed

  279. with trying to figure out

  280. who it was that used that ship at one time

  281. who is this ancient race

  282. and we would all know

  283. that if one of the people

  284. on the ship

  285. our spaceship

  286. if they were to say

  287. no that ship did not

  288. that just happened by an explosion

  289. it purely happened by chance

  290. there's nothing to seek

  291. but that wouldn't be treated seriously

  292. in the movie

  293. because it would be very obvious

  294. that if you saw something as intricate

  295. as a spaceship

  296. even with no people

  297. that it was something built and designed

  298. and that's at the heart

  299. the simple Christian claim

  300. that what we see around us

  301. and that the universe

  302. I mean just a cell

  303. a human cell

  304. just DNA is more complex

  305. than that spaceship

  306. and on one hand

  307. that's why I was just talking

  308. to a barista just a couple of weeks ago

  309. and who's definitely not a Christian

  310. and she said on one hand

  311. okay I know that there has to be something

  312. that created all things

  313. because that can only account for it

  314. but you're wrong

  315. which was very refreshing to hear

  316. it didn't bother me

  317. or threaten me at all

  318. and there are many people

  319. in our culture

  320. who are caught between this idea

  321. that the order

  322. and the complexity

  323. and the beauty

  324. that we see

  325. has to be accounted for some way

  326. and when science

  327. and atheists

  328. you know

  329. when they push

  330. to the idea

  331. that in fact

  332. everything just came to be

  333. as completely

  334. and utterly

  335. as well as a chance

  336. that there's this

  337. conflict

  338. in the soul

  339. and the mind

  340. and the heart

  341. of many people

  342. in our culture

  343. which is why

  344. in our culture

  345. it's far more common

  346. to slip in

  347. ideas of purpose

  348. and destiny

  349. and design

  350. in the theory of evolution

  351. that

  352. it's easy

  353. to slip it in

  354. it's easy

  355. you know

  356. evolutionary psychology

  357. slips in

  358. this idea

  359. of things

  360. being in us

  361. because of some type

  362. of design

  363. and moral imperatives

  364. and it gets slipped

  365. into it

  366. but it doesn't actually

  367. the theory of evolution

  368. cannot support that

  369. it all crumples

  370. if you think

  371. if you think about it

  372. very deeply

  373. but let's read this

  374. again together

  375. in the beginning

  376. was the word

  377. and the word

  378. was with God

  379. and the word

  380. was God

  381. he was in the beginning

  382. with God

  383. all things were made

  384. through him

  385. and without him

  386. was not anything

  387. made

  388. that was made

  389. you know

  390. not only

  391. does this text

  392. I'm going to do another

  393. very un-Canadian thing

  394. for a moment

  395. and once again

  396. I hope you're going to

  397. give me some grace

  398. if you're deeply offended

  399. I'll

  400. about this

  401. I'll try to deal

  402. with it

  403. later on

  404. because

  405. I don't mean to be mean

  406. but

  407. there's a lot of fear

  408. in Canada

  409. right now

  410. I think it's

  411. you know

  412. been made worse

  413. by what happened

  414. just a few blocks

  415. from here

  416. just a few weeks ago

  417. and

  418. I think it's made worse

  419. by

  420. ISIS

  421. or ISIL

  422. or whatever

  423. however

  424. we're supposed

  425. to refer to them

  426. and

  427. you know

  428. it just

  429. these beheadings

  430. and the terrible

  431. terrible

  432. terrible

  433. terrible

  434. things that are

  435. being done

  436. it causes

  437. people to wonder

  438. about their

  439. safety

  440. and people

  441. wonder about

  442. why

  443. why

  444. like

  445. why

  446. can't

  447. these

  448. people

  449. and that's

  450. the type

  451. of language

  452. that we use

  453. okay I'm not

  454. pardoning it

  455. I'm just

  456. I'm trying to

  457. echo it

  458. like why

  459. don't these

  460. people just

  461. have this

  462. sense of

  463. our common

  464. humanity

  465. like why

  466. are they

  467. so

  468. inhumane

  469. like why

  470. are they

  471. so cruel

  472. like why

  473. why don't

  474. they understand

  475. that on one

  476. level we're

  477. sort of all

  478. the same

  479. and that we

  480. should need

  481. to get

  482. together

  483. just as I

  484. think that

  485. the sort of

  486. the governing

  487. story of our

  488. elite institutions

  489. of media

  490. and culture

  491. and academia

  492. I don't think

  493. they can really

  494. account for the

  495. complexity of the

  496. world and the

  497. beauty of the

  498. world

  499. I also don't

  500. think they can

  501. really account

  502. for this whole

  503. problem of

  504. inhumanity

  505. because you

  506. see the idea

  507. that there's

  508. like one

  509. human race

  510. and that we're

  511. to treat each

  512. other humanely

  513. is not a

  514. scientific truth

  515. it's not a

  516. biological truth

  517. it's a

  518. theological

  519. truth

  520. that comes

  521. from the

  522. understanding

  523. that there is

  524. one creator

  525. of one

  526. humanity

  527. and while

  528. obviously it

  529. is biologically

  530. true

  531. that human

  532. beings by

  533. definition are

  534. human beings

  535. and scientists

  536. can prove

  537. whether or not

  538. something is

  539. human

  540. the fact

  541. of science

  542. doesn't create

  543. within human

  544. beings

  545. any sense

  546. of being

  547. one united

  548. humanity

  549. that flows

  550. from the idea

  551. of there being

  552. but one

  553. God

  554. who has

  555. created

  556. all things

  557. it's a

  558. theological

  559. truth

  560. it's not a

  561. scientific and

  562. biological truth

  563. say this text

  564. again with me

  565. notice the

  566. beginning of the

  567. text

  568. in the beginning

  569. was the

  570. word

  571. and the

  572. word

  573. was with

  574. God

  575. and the

  576. word

  577. was

  578. God

  579. he was

  580. in the

  581. beginning

  582. with

  583. God

  584. all things

  585. were made

  586. through him

  587. and without

  588. him was not

  589. anything made

  590. that was made

  591. you know here

  592. it says in the

  593. beginning

  594. it's obviously

  595. echoing those

  596. of you who

  597. know your

  598. bible a little

  599. bit

  600. it's echoing

  601. genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  602. chapter 1

  603. it's saying

  604. that before

  605. there was

  606. anything

  607. there was

  608. the word

  609. before there

  610. was anything

  611. it's in a

  612. sense before

  613. there was

  614. time

  615. before the

  616. big bang

  617. before there

  618. was anything

  619. there was

  620. the word

  621. and in the

  622. original language

  623. next phrase

  624. and the word

  625. was with

  626. God

  627. in the

  628. original

  629. language

  630. in English

  631. there's only

  632. one word

  633. for was

  634. but in the

  635. original

  636. language

  637. there's three

  638. words

  639. for was

  640. so that

  641. in

  642. sorry not

  643. was

  644. with

  645. in the

  646. original

  647. language

  648. there's

  649. three

  650. different

  651. words

  652. for with

  653. and so

  654. if I was

  655. to say

  656. that I'm

  657. with my

  658. dog

  659. or I'm with my car and I'm with my wife,

  660. the first two withs might or might not be one of the two different words,

  661. but there'd be no mistaking that in the third case,

  662. there's a word for with that's only used when a person is with a person

  663. in the original language.

  664. And in the original language, when it says,

  665. in the beginning was the word,

  666. talking about the word and that before all time,

  667. before there's anything, there is the word.

  668. And then the second phrase when it says,

  669. and the word was with God,

  670. that with is the word that's only used of a person with a person.

  671. And so it's saying the word's a person

  672. and this person is with God who's also a person.

  673. And the word who's before all things

  674. and is a person who's with God is also God.

  675. And the word was God.

  676. And it's saying here that there's two persons,

  677. but it's also saying very clearly that there's only one God.

  678. It's a deep mystery.

  679. He was in the beginning with God.

  680. It emphasizes it.

  681. Augustine, who lived about 1,700 years ago,

  682. when he was commenting about this,

  683. he said that those words should be written in gold

  684. in the most beautiful script in every church that exists.

  685. That's what he said.

  686. It should be there in gold because it's so central.

  687. In the beginning was the word,

  688. and the word was with God,

  689. and the word was God.

  690. He was in the beginning with God.

  691. And there's this very, very clear teaching

  692. that there is one God in two persons.

  693. The deity of the Holy Spirit will be developed later on

  694. in the Gospel of John and in other parts of the New Testament.

  695. But here is the introduction of the book.

  696. It's trying to communicate to us that there's only one God,

  697. and this one God has made all things,

  698. brought into existence all things.

  699. And we human beings are things.

  700. And human beings are made as a body and as a soul,

  701. in fleshed souls or embodied spirits.

  702. There are different ways to put it.

  703. We're both soul and body, but we're just one thing.

  704. We're not two things.

  705. And God made both of those parts that make us us.

  706. And because there is but one God,

  707. and that one God has not only created all things,

  708. this is also the basis whereby you should not rape the environment.

  709. And it's going to be the basis.

  710. If you read the Old Testament in Genesis 1,

  711. it talks about how God has made all things.

  712. And later on, there will be laws about the proper treatment of animals

  713. and the proper treatment of people.

  714. And it's all because of this understanding

  715. that God is not part of his creation.

  716. He's made all things.

  717. All things are properly, fully his.

  718. And because of that, all things are to be cared for.

  719. And in particular, human beings that are made in the image and likeness of God.

  720. Every human being is not just biologically a human being,

  721. but what makes a human being a human being is not just biology,

  722. but that every human being is made in the image and likeness of God.

  723. And there is one humanity and one God.

  724. That one humanity and one God is proven by biology and proven by science.

  725. And philosophers like Thomas Nagel, who are serious philosophers and serious atheists,

  726. said that the atheistic account of origins does not, in fact, hold intellectual water

  727. and can't, in fact, account for all of the things that we see,

  728. nor all of the experiences that we experience.

  729. That the idea that all things come about as a result of time and chance

  730. does not account for the fact that we see order.

  731. And the fact that we have things like love and that we sense things like beauty

  732. and we sense things like music as being glorious.

  733. And that we can watch dance and think that there's something majestic

  734. about a well-choreographed human being's dancing in beautiful choreography,

  735. that there's something glorious and uplifting about that.

  736. That the dance accounts for things better than chance accounts for things.

  737. Dance accounts for things better than chance accounts for things.

  738. And so, you know, our culture, on one hand, we have this sense that being human matters.

  739. That in cultures where the human person has absolutely no value,

  740. if you have a caste system, if you have a slave system,

  741. if you have a totalitarian system, that being a person matters.

  742. And that there should be this common sense of personhood

  743. whether or not it is recognized.

  744. That is, in fact, a theological truth that goes back to the book of Genesis

  745. and the book of John and the entire scriptures.

  746. And in fact, I would ultimately say that no other system of thought

  747. properly grounds that fundamental experience and insight we have as human beings.

  748. That Hinduism and Buddhism and science and atheistic science

  749. cannot account for these things and ground them in a way which is both intellectually respectable

  750. and scientifically examinable.

  751. And it's just compellingly true.

  752. Join with me in saying this again.

  753. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  754. He was in the beginning with God.

  755. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

  756. Those of you who come to the church are probably wondering,

  757. why doesn't George have any points?

  758. I kept struggling to have points.

  759. And God said, George, how are you going to improve on John 1, 1 to 3?

  760. Like, how am I going to improve on that?

  761. And I was thinking, well, I guess I can't.

  762. So that's why we're going to keep saying it over and over again.

  763. You get nothing else out of this, but you've started to memorize John 1, 1 to 3,

  764. then angels are happy, God is happy, and I'm happy.

  765. In fact, let's say it again.

  766. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  767. He was in the beginning with God.

  768. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

  769. So some of you might say, here's my last very un-Canadian moment, okay?

  770. So some of you might say, George, okay, that's very, very interesting that you say that it's a theological truth

  771. that if you have one God and one humanity, that there's this common, there's this sense of the dignity of persons,

  772. and that there's a, you know, when you talk about treating human beings in a certain type of way,

  773. that it, because human beings are all human beings, that that's a theological, that's a very interesting thing.

  774. But ISIS believes all that too, don't they?

  775. So that's the last un-Canadian moment.

  776. I'm coming to a conclusion with it.

  777. And so, George, what do you say about that?

  778. It can't obviously be true.

  779. And I would say, you're right, it's not sufficient.

  780. It's not enough.

  781. Because, you see, you could come to the conclusion that there's one God and one humanity,

  782. but God is, in fact, very, very distant, doesn't care anything about humanity at all.

  783. You could believe there's one God who's created all things, and therefore all human beings are sort of the same.

  784. But actually, fundamentally, God views all human beings as slaves, as fodder, as being completely and utterly irrelevant,

  785. and one doesn't want to really deal with them.

  786. And, in fact, actually, when God is going to try to deal with these pesky little human beings that he has no particular regard for,

  787. he'll pick a few that he likes, and the rest he doesn't really care about.

  788. And when he even deals with them, he deals with them through intermediaries.

  789. He doesn't actually deal with them directly, but through intermediaries.

  790. You see, and I don't mean to cast dispersions, in the Koran, even the Koran is not God dealing with human beings directly,

  791. but through intermediaries.

  792. And, in fact, it's not clear from the Koran of the dignity and value of human beings.

  793. It's not clear, in fact, whether human beings are but slaves that can justify slavery and all sorts of things.

  794. Not directly.

  795. I'm not saying that that's what the Koran does, but there's a missing piece.

  796. Let's say this again, and then, Andrew, after we've said this again, if you could put up the next slide.

  797. Join with me in saying this again.

  798. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  799. He was in the beginning with God.

  800. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

  801. 11 verses later.

  802. And say it with me.

  803. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  804. And the Word became flesh.

  805. John wants us to understand that every word we are going to go, if you go back and decide that between now and the next couple of weeks, you're going to read all of the Gospel of John.

  806. You want to hear about Jesus as John bears witness to Jesus.

  807. And John wants us to know at the very beginning that Jesus is not a great man.

  808. And I am not insulting him when I say that.

  809. Jesus is not a great man.

  810. Jesus is God.

  811. Jesus is God who has taken, set aside his glory, and brought into himself our human nature in its completion, and walks amongst us.

  812. And that is who we are reading about.

  813. And this brings us to the final thing, which I can only touch on very briefly.

  814. It brings on an unbelievable coherence.

  815. You see, one of the things which is so challenging and embracing, if you try to read a philosopher like Thomas Nagel,

  816. is that he doesn't believe you go to a better place when you die.

  817. Die, you die.

  818. Fertilizer.

  819. Fertilizer.

  820. And God didn't create us.

  821. It's probably going to have to be by chance in some way.

  822. We just have to figure out a better scientific mechanism and description than evolution has given us.

  823. And we live our lives, and, you know, we live our lives according to whatever things about how to try to get along,

  824. and, you know, basically utilitarian type of ethics, and you sort of get along,

  825. and it's sort of best if you do certain types of things,

  826. and there's a great consistency and coherence in it.

  827. But notice here, the Bible is telling us that the same one who brought all things into existence

  828. is the same one who comes and takes into himself our human nature and walks amongst us,

  829. is the same one when you read John's Gospel who is going to teach us how to live,

  830. is the same one who is going to die upon the cross to be the power of God for salvation for all who believes in him,

  831. is the same one who will rise and defeat sin and death and all hostile spiritual powers.

  832. He's the same one who will ascend into heaven,

  833. and he is the same one who will return and will bring in the new heaven and the new earth.

  834. And it's not that you have one type of account of creation,

  835. another account of how to live,

  836. another account of what is going to fix things,

  837. and another account of what happens after you die.

  838. It's not like the average Canadian, and I don't mean to insult anybody who's here,

  839. who on one hand believes that, yes, everything that came to be came about as a result of time and chance.

  840. That's evolution.

  841. And yes, when I die, I'm going to go to a better place.

  842. And yes, when I live my life, I'm going to live my life according to these types of moral rules.

  843. And they never ask themselves,

  844. one moment, if I'm going to go to a better place,

  845. maybe that should affect the way that I live.

  846. In one moment, if I'm just a complete result of time and chance,

  847. how on earth am I going to go to a better place?

  848. How on earth is that going to happen?

  849. And it's only not viewed as incoherent,

  850. because that's what everybody believes.

  851. But it's not, I do not mean to offend,

  852. it's not coherent.

  853. Brave souls like Thomas Nagel recognizes that it's not incoherent,

  854. incoherent, and lives his life in an attempt to be intellectually consistent.

  855. But we see here that not only does the Christian faith,

  856. not only does the Bible offer us this profound account

  857. that everything, that the thing which is the most basic,

  858. the beginning of all things is God,

  859. that he's the one who brings all things into existence.

  860. And that because he brings all things into existence,

  861. we can have this sense that there's,

  862. that's why there's order,

  863. that's why there's beauty,

  864. that's why there's joy,

  865. that's why there's love,

  866. that's why there's truth.

  867. And that's why there's these things.

  868. That's why we can recognize,

  869. that's why we can discover,

  870. that's why we can figure out how things work,

  871. that's how we can dig and learn and dig and learn,

  872. and we can be engineers and physicists and chemists and biologists

  873. and moms and dads and dancers and poets

  874. and artists and carpenters

  875. and have families,

  876. and we can do all these things,

  877. and there's this coherence there.

  878. And the same one who's created all things

  879. and we recognize that there is this fundamental problem

  880. and it's not a problem with Islam.

  881. It's not a problem with atheism.

  882. It's not a problem with totalitarianism.

  883. It's not a problem with Buddhism or Hinduism or Christianity.

  884. That the fact of the matter is that every day in the newspaper

  885. it convinces us that there's something fundamentally wrong with human beings

  886. that human beings cannot fix for themselves.

  887. I just watched on DVD The Giver.

  888. And as soon as you see a perfect society in any Hollywood movie,

  889. what do we all know?

  890. There's evil.

  891. It's evil masquerading is good.

  892. Everybody knows that.

  893. Except when we take psychology and spirituality and then we forget it.

  894. But the Bible never forgets it and it goes after the heart

  895. and it's saying that the same God who creates all things

  896. is the God who comes and is amongst us in lowliness

  897. and he comes to die.

  898. And by telling us that, the Bible is telling us

  899. that the problem of human beings is vastly worse

  900. than we can possibly imagine and believe.

  901. But the worth of human beings is vastly greater.

  902. that God, the Son of God, would die upon a cross

  903. so that we could be reconciled to him.

  904. One of the most famous verses in the Bible,

  905. John 3.16,

  906. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son

  907. that whoever believes in him should not perish

  908. but have eternal life.

  909. Spoken by God, the Creator, who walks amongst us,

  910. who died upon the cross to redeem us,

  911. to reconcile us to him.

  912. Andrew, if you could put up the final slide.

  913. I'm going to invite,

  914. this will be up on the webpage later,

  915. I'm going to invite you that this is a great prayer.

  916. It's a prayer to begin the Christian walk.

  917. It's a prayer to live the Christian walk.

  918. Dear God, please grow in me

  919. a humble, trusting, walking knowledge

  920. of the greatness, glory, and grace

  921. of Jesus, the crucified Messiah.

  922. At whose birth we celebrate,

  923. Jesus the Messiah.

  924. And it's to be a humble,

  925. to grow in us a humble trusting

  926. of the greatness, glory, and grace

  927. of Jesus, the crucified Messiah.

  928. Humble trust.

  929. Walking means that it makes a difference

  930. about how we live.

  931. You know, the mission statement of this church

  932. is making disciples gripped by the gospel,

  933. living for his glory.

  934. That as the gospel grips us,

  935. it will change how we live our 24-7 lives.

  936. And I try to capture that in the word walking.

  937. If the Holy Spirit has it all pressed upon you,

  938. would you join me in praying that?

  939. Could you stand?

  940. Please?

  941. And we'll just allow a moment of silence.

  942. And you don't have to pray it out loud,

  943. but if the Holy Spirit is pressed upon your heart at all,

  944. the glory and the greatness of Jesus,

  945. God, the Son of God,

  946. the Word,

  947. who was with the Father before all eternity,

  948. who became flesh,

  949. to die upon the cross,

  950. so that all who believe and trust in him

  951. will not perish,

  952. will not perish,

  953. but have eternal life

  954. with the Father who has created all things

  955. and will make the new heaven

  956. and the new earth for us to dwell in.

  957. And not just to know and trust Jesus,

  958. but to know and trust Jesus

  959. is to enter into a relationship

  960. where we walk with him.

  961. He guides us.

  962. He'll change how we live our lives.

  963. The prayer to enter the Christian walk

  964. is the prayer to continue and grow

  965. and deepen in the Christian walk.

  966. So those for whom the Holy Spirit is pressed upon you,

  967. please join with me in praying.

  968. Dear God,

  969. please grow in me

  970. a humble, trusting, walking knowledge

  971. of the greatness, glory, and grace

  972. of Jesus, the crucified Messiah.

  973. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  974. Bring us to Jesus.

  975. Help us to trust, Father,

  976. that all truth is your truth.

  977. Help us, Father,

  978. to press in to know more of Jesus

  979. and to know more of the truth

  980. and to know more of you

  981. and to know more of your word

  982. and have your word play a deeper role in us.

  983. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus,

  984. your Son and our Savior.

  985. Amen.
