  1. Father, we ask again that you would pour out your Holy Spirit upon us, gently but deeply

  2. pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  3. Father, you know the things that we're afraid of, you know the things that we should be

  4. afraid of, you know the things that we're anxious about.

  5. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would come upon us, that your Holy Spirit would

  6. still and quiet and calm our mind and heart and will so that we might know more of you

  7. and that your Son Jesus would have a deeper role and place in our lives.

  8. So Father, draw us to Jesus.

  9. In this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  10. Amen.

  11. Please be seated.

  12. The last I heard, it was 148 people who were killed in Peshawar, I hope I'm pronouncing that

  13. correctly, Pakistan earlier this week.

  14. 148 was the number that I heard.

  15. The overwhelming majority of them were children.

  16. And as one person said in the paper the other day, we see in what happened in Pakistan pure

  17. evil.

  18. Whether or not it was pure evil, but it's probably as close to pure evil as we're about to see

  19. on this, on this, on the earth.

  20. Part of what made it such pure evil was that these men who came to the school in Pakistan,

  21. the majority of the children that were shot, were shot by a single gunshot to the head.

  22. So it wasn't just indiscriminate killing, but that as each child probably begging for mercy,

  23. some gunmen would come and look at them and shoot them in the head.

  24. And then we'll go and do another child and another child and another child.

  25. Until almost 140 children and 148 in total were killed.

  26. And I think we all have to agree that if that is not pure evil, it's so close to pure evil,

  27. we don't want to get any closer to pure evil.

  28. It was a completely and utterly horrendous, dark, evil act.

  29. And it happened just this week.

  30. I didn't...

  31. It's also been a week where, I mean, we could...

  32. You know, the events that took place with the woman who killed the nine children and the fellow in Sydney.

  33. You know, we could say in those cases that there maybe was some type of mental illness and instability,

  34. but you can't say that about what happened in Pakistan.

  35. Now, some of you might say, boy, I'm so glad I came to church.

  36. George is talking about pleasant, uplifting things.

  37. You know, George, isn't Christmas time and it's just a few days before Christmas?

  38. Isn't Christmas supposed to be when we talk about things like kindness and generosity

  39. and the good parts of human nature?

  40. And that is, I think, largely how most Canadians understand Christmas.

  41. But, you know, for Christians, the Christmas story,

  42. God, as he tells us the Christmas story through his word,

  43. he wants us to spend some time reflecting on darkness and the darkness in the world.

  44. And so if you have your Bibles, turn in them to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  45. If you don't have Bibles with you, there's Bibles up at the front always,

  46. and you're always welcome to take one, to use it, to keep it if you want as a gift.

  47. This Sunday, like the last couple of Sundays, we're actually going to be saying a lot of the scripture over and over and over again,

  48. because we're going to really reflect primarily upon two verses.

  49. But you might have heard me read the gospel text a few moments ago,

  50. and you know that it culminates in John 1, verse 14, which is one of the great Christmas passages.

    John 1:14

  51. The word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  52. The word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory.

  53. Glory is the only son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  54. But before it gets to this great acclamation of Christmas,

  55. it has a profound sentence on darkness and evil.

  56. So God wants us to reflect upon darkness in the context of reflecting upon the birth of his son.

  57. So John 1, verse 1, let's just sort of get the context up until we get to verse 5.

    John 1:1

  58. Verse 1,

  59. Here are the two verses which we're going to primarily focus on this morning,

  60. although we'll look at the three verses that follow as well.

  61. But here's the two verses that we're going to really focus on.

  62. Verse 4,

  63. Last week we talked about verses 1 to 3,

  64. and primarily it was a little bit about how God, Jesus, is the word,

  65. and the word has been with God from all eternity,

  66. and God has created all things.

  67. And some of you might have wondered,

  68. if I say that God, if the Bible teaches,

  69. and it's not what it says here, it says it very, you know, verse 3,

  70. all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

  71. All things were made through him,

  72. and without him was not anything made that was made.

  73. Does that mean that God created evil?

  74. In fact, I was going to talk about it last week,

  75. but then I thought, no, I'm going to wait to this week,

  76. because I realize this is the better week to talk about it.

  77. Is the Bible saying that God created evil?

  78. I just had a conversation with somebody this week who said that God created evil,

  79. and we had a bit of a conversation about it.

  80. I don't know if I did a very good job in helping to understand what the Bible teaches,

  81. but when it says here that God makes all things, does that mean he makes evil?

  82. Well, Andrew, if you could put up the first scripture text, verses 4 and 5,

  83. could you read this with me?

  84. Verse 4 and 5,

  85. I should have written down my verse.

  86. I'm going to have trouble reading it.

  87. I'm going to have to say it, and you folks will just have to read it.

  88. So here's the first thing,

  89. and the first point about this passage of scripture,

  90. and all of it we're talking about is this,

  91. something about God.

  92. God is light,

  93. and in him is no darkness at all.

  94. That's the first point,

  95. and if you're wondering if that sounds familiar,

  96. St. George, that's a very clever way to put it.

  97. Andrew, if you could put up the first point.

  98. It's not that I thought of it.

  99. It's actually in 1 John.

  100. It's chapter 1, the second part of verse 5.

  101. God is light,

  102. and in him is no darkness at all.

  103. When the text is saying,

  104. in the beginning was the Word,

  105. and the Word was with God,

  106. and the Word was God,

  107. he was in the beginning with God,

  108. all things were made through him,

  109. and without him was not any other.

  110. Anything made that was made.

  111. In him was life,

  112. and the life was the light of men.

  113. The light shines on in the darkness,

  114. and the darkness has not mastered it.

  115. When the Bible is saying this,

  116. it's making an affirmation

  117. that God is light,

  118. and in him is no darkness at all.

  119. In fact, it's very, very interesting.

  120. When it says in verse 4,

  121. in him was life,

  122. what the text is saying

  123. is it's saying that God,

  124. the Son of God,

  125. the second person of the Trinity,

  126. who we'll see in a moment,

  127. takes on flesh,

  128. that he doesn't have life.

  129. He is life.

  130. He doesn't have life.

  131. You and I have life.

  132. But God,

  133. the Son of God,

  134. is life.

  135. That's who and what he is.

  136. And then when it says that this life

  137. is also light,

  138. you know,

  139. we might have,

  140. you can say that we can see

  141. sort of the light of the intellect,

  142. you know,

  143. the light of conscience

  144. that we might have.

  145. when you talk to somebody,

  146. you can see,

  147. oh, you know,

  148. they have a gleam in their eye,

  149. you know,

  150. they have some joy,

  151. they have some happiness,

  152. they,

  153. you can see the spark of intelligence.

  154. We use these different analogies

  155. for light to talk about things

  156. of conscience or creativity

  157. or goodness,

  158. you know,

  159. or intelligence or wit.

  160. And these are things that we have,

  161. but the Bible is saying

  162. that God doesn't have them.

  163. He is light,

  164. and he is life.

  165. And just as if you have

  166. a room which is completely light,

  167. there can't be any darkness in it.

  168. And if God is life,

  169. there can't really be death in him

  170. in a sense,

  171. where darkness,

  172. if he is life,

  173. then the Bible is making this

  174. very,

  175. very strong claim

  176. that God is light

  177. and in him

  178. is no darkness at all.

  179. So,

  180. the Bible is saying

  181. that if,

  182. there's certain things

  183. you have to understand about God

  184. that,

  185. in fact,

  186. you know,

  187. what the Bible is doing

  188. is it's struggling

  189. with a sort of a thing

  190. that missionaries

  191. have to struggle with.

  192. all of the time

  193. is that if,

  194. you know,

  195. if you go to be a missionary

  196. in a remote part of China,

  197. or if you go to be a missionary

  198. in a place like Kazakhstan,

  199. or you go to be a missionary,

  200. you know,

  201. in some place

  202. that only knows

  203. a particular tribal religion,

  204. you have to use the words

  205. that the culture knows,

  206. but over time,

  207. you have to try to help them

  208. to understand the words

  209. in different ways.

  210. And so,

  211. in our culture,

  212. when people think about God

  213. and his relationship

  214. to good and evil,

  215. there's many people

  216. in our culture

  217. who will say that God

  218. is above good and evil,

  219. that good and evil

  220. don't really apply to God,

  221. that he's above them,

  222. that good and evil

  223. is just something

  224. that we think

  225. or we understand,

  226. but God is neither,

  227. he's above them.

  228. And some believe

  229. that,

  230. in fact,

  231. that there's two principles

  232. at work in the world,

  233. that there's a good principle

  234. and a bad principle,

  235. and that these principles

  236. are always at work,

  237. and you have to choose

  238. which principle it is

  239. that you're following.

  240. And some people say

  241. that God just merely decides

  242. that certain things are good

  243. and certain things are evil,

  244. and he just sort of

  245. makes these decisions up

  246. just out of his head

  247. one day as he's sitting around,

  248. and it's just merely

  249. a matter of God

  250. just declaring

  251. that certain things are good

  252. or certain things are bad.

  253. And there's other people

  254. who think that,

  255. in fact,

  256. good and evil

  257. are both in God,

  258. and that he has to struggle

  259. with these things himself.

  260. And these are the very,

  261. very common views

  262. in our culture.

  263. And so even when people think,

  264. you know,

  265. when you use the word God

  266. to somebody,

  267. and in their mind,

  268. they're thinking,

  269. oh yeah,

  270. God is above good and evil,

  271. or God is beneath good and evil,

  272. or God,

  273. good and evil doesn't apply to God,

  274. or whatever.

  275. And the Bible here

  276. is trying to clarify

  277. that when,

  278. all the way through

  279. the Gospel of John,

  280. when you read

  281. and see the word God,

  282. it wants us to understand

  283. that it's saying

  284. that God is light,

  285. and in him

  286. is no darkness at all,

  287. that he is God of light

  288. who is light,

  289. that he is the God of life

  290. who is life,

  291. that that's who

  292. we are talking about.

  293. So some of you might say,

  294. hey George,

  295. that's very interesting,

  296. but you didn't answer

  297. the question.

  298. You're doing

  299. what politicians do.

  300. Sorry,

  301. I didn't mean to put down

  302. politicians.

  303. Actually,

  304. this is true.

  305. You know,

  306. a few years ago,

  307. I had to be interviewed

  308. in the paper a lot

  309. about a controversial issue,

  310. and I got interviewed

  311. on TV and radio,

  312. and so I had some media training,

  313. and one of the things

  314. they tell you in media training,

  315. so this is how you have

  316. to understand politicians

  317. when they're at their best,

  318. is that what they tell you

  319. in media training

  320. is that you have

  321. two or three or four things

  322. that you want to say,

  323. and whenever the questioner

  324. asks you a question,

  325. you just pick

  326. one of the four things

  327. that you want to say

  328. that's closest to the question,

  329. and you ignore the question,

  330. and you just say

  331. what you want to say

  332. over and over and over again,

  333. and so it's a little bit

  334. of a challenge.

  335. The reporter keeps trying

  336. to break you

  337. from just saying

  338. the four things

  339. that you want to say,

  340. and you're just trying

  341. to just stick

  342. with the four things,

  343. and anyway,

  344. so I'm not doing that.

  345. So the question was,

  346. George,

  347. does God,

  348. if God creates all things,

  349. okay,

  350. granted that God

  351. okay,

  352. you're saying

  353. that God is light,

  354. he's only good,

  355. and you're also saying

  356. that God created all things,

  357. and I'm not sure

  358. what that means,

  359. George,

  360. aren't you still,

  361. does God create evil,

  362. or is it a matter

  363. that God sort of

  364. created things,

  365. and then that was

  366. like a long,

  367. long,

  368. long time ago,

  369. you know,

  370. like the Big Bang

  371. was billions of years ago,

  372. and sort of God

  373. is now really distant,

  374. he has other things

  375. on his mind,

  376. he's not preoccupied

  377. with what's going on

  378. on earth,

  379. or he's powerless

  380. to deal with things

  381. on earth,

  382. because God is distant,

  383. is that what you're saying,

  384. George,

  385. is that what the Bible

  386. is saying?

  387. Well,

  388. let's say verses

  389. four and five again,

  390. if you could put them up,

  391. God,

  392. in him was life,

  393. and the life

  394. was life in the night,

  395. and the light

  396. shines on the darkness,

  397. and the darkness

  398. has not mastered it.

  399. That's the text

  400. that we're thinking about,

  401. and what this text

  402. is saying here,

  403. and Andrew,

  404. if you could put up

  405. the next point,

  406. sorry,

  407. the true and living God

  408. created all things good.

  409. He did not create evil.

  410. Evil is a blinding,

  411. breaking,

  412. bending,

  413. hiding,

  414. blurring,

  415. emptying of the good.

  416. That's what the Bible

  417. is telling us.

  418. It's going to maintain,

  419. if you read Genesis,

  420. if you read the Bible,

  421. you're going to see

  422. it's a very,

  423. very consistent understanding

  424. of the biblical worldview,

  425. that God is light,

  426. and in him

  427. is no darkness at all.

  428. God is never evil,

  429. and he never does evil.

  430. That's why anybody

  431. who says that part

  432. of their spiritual growth

  433. means forgiving God,

  434. they haven't understood

  435. who God is,

  436. because God has never

  437. done anything evil to them.

  438. That's what the Bible claims.

  439. And the Bible says

  440. that God has created

  441. all things,

  442. he creates all things good,

  443. he did not create evil,

  444. and therefore,

  445. evil in a sense

  446. is always a breaking

  447. or a misuse

  448. or an emptying

  449. or a blurring

  450. or a hiding

  451. or an exaggerating

  452. or of some good thing,

  453. and by the emptying,

  454. emptying,

  455. removing,

  456. bending,

  457. breaking,

  458. blurring,

  459. darkening

  460. of that which is good,

  461. that is what evil is.

  462. That's what Christians believe.

  463. That's what this text

  464. is saying

  465. when it says,

  466. in him was life

  467. and the life

  468. was the light

  469. of humankind.

  470. The light

  471. shines on

  472. in the darkness,

  473. but the darkness

  474. has not mastered it.

  475. That's what the text

  476. is saying.

  477. It's saying

  478. that evil

  479. is real,

  480. it's not an illusion.

  481. That's another thing

  482. that many people believe

  483. is that evil

  484. is just an illusion.

  485. It's not real.

  486. Peshawar was real,

  487. wasn't it?

  488. Was it,

  489. I think,

  490. it was the president

  491. of Pakistan

  492. said it was a very,

  493. I thought it was

  494. a very, very wise thing.

  495. I hope I get

  496. the quote right.

  497. The lightest casket

  498. is the heaviest burden

  499. to carry.

  500. The lightest casket

  501. is the heaviest burden

  502. to carry.

  503. And I know that

  504. even as I,

  505. as we look at this text

  506. this morning

  507. that there's people

  508. in the congregation

  509. who've been raped,

  510. who have been victims

  511. of sexual abuse,

  512. who've witnessed genocide.

  513. Some of us

  514. might have lived

  515. relatively safe

  516. and protected lives,

  517. but there are

  518. some,

  519. maybe many,

  520. in our congregation

  521. who know that evil

  522. is never an illusion,

  523. that evil is real,

  524. that darkness is real.

  525. And the Bible

  526. affirms that,

  527. but it affirms

  528. that it's always

  529. a bending,

  530. breaking,

  531. distorting,

  532. misuse of that

  533. which is good.

  534. I mean,

  535. even think of this

  536. terrible thing

  537. in Peshawar.

  538. You know,

  539. the fact that the men

  540. had ability to plan

  541. is a good thing.

  542. The fact that men

  543. had strength

  544. and health

  545. and all of those things,

  546. those are good things.

  547. You know,

  548. we pray for those things

  549. in our kids,

  550. don't we?

  551. That they can plan,

  552. that they can be strong

  553. and that they can be healthy

  554. and that they can accomplish

  555. their plans,

  556. that they can have

  557. determination

  558. and will.

  559. And yet,

  560. all these things

  561. that are good

  562. are completely

  563. and utterly misused

  564. and we wonder

  565. what on earth

  566. goes on

  567. in their souls,

  568. in their minds,

  569. in their hearts.

  570. Like,

  571. what did they put

  572. to death?

  573. What did they

  574. cancel out?

  575. What did they exaggerate?

  576. How could they possibly

  577. take the normal,

  578. good human concern

  579. for your group,

  580. which is a good thing

  581. to have a concern

  582. for your family

  583. or your group?

  584. That's not a bad thing

  585. to have a concern

  586. for that,

  587. but how is it

  588. that they so exaggerated

  589. that concern

  590. and put to death

  591. anything to do

  592. with human compassion

  593. and how could they

  594. exaggerate

  595. and darken

  596. and remove

  597. and bend

  598. and misuse

  599. so that the good things

  600. in them

  601. were used

  602. to create something

  603. which is,

  604. if not pure evil,

  605. really close to it.

  606. And that's what

  607. the Bible claims.

  608. That's what the Bible

  609. claims.

  610. In God,

  611. there is no darkness.

  612. In God,

  613. he is only light.

  614. He is only life.

  615. To walk towards

  616. the true and living God

  617. is to walk towards light.

  618. To walk towards

  619. the true and living God

  620. is to walk towards life.

  621. To walk towards Jesus

  622. is to walk towards life.

  623. Always.

  624. And the darkness,

  625. which is real,

  626. not an illusion,

  627. is a bending,

  628. breaking,

  629. distorting,

  630. misuse,

  631. emptying,

  632. blurring

  633. of good things.

  634. And that's why it is,

  635. on one hand,

  636. we have this sense

  637. that surely

  638. if there is a God

  639. that does exist,

  640. he must be good.

  641. We have problems

  642. as to why these things happen.

  643. I'm not going to talk about that

  644. very much in the sermon.

  645. But we have these

  646. dual senses

  647. that that is evil

  648. and that there is

  649. this thing which is good

  650. and that to be human

  651. is to choose goodness.

  652. To be human

  653. is to try to move

  654. towards goodness.

  655. And we believe that.

  656. the Bible teaches,

  657. in fact,

  658. I would say that only the Bible,

  659. the biblical worldview,

  660. properly articulates

  661. in both ideas

  662. and grand narrative

  663. that fundamental

  664. human

  665. sense

  666. that,

  667. you know,

  668. many of you,

  669. maybe some of,

  670. maybe only a few of you

  671. know that for me

  672. when I was on my,

  673. in my early,

  674. I became a Christian

  675. in grade 12

  676. and I had many,

  677. I've had times of doubt

  678. throughout the years

  679. but most of my,

  680. my real doubts

  681. were when I was at university

  682. and then in my two different times

  683. in graduate school.

  684. And,

  685. but,

  686. you know,

  687. for me,

  688. as I was struggling

  689. with different things

  690. about whether the Christian faith

  691. was true,

  692. for me there was

  693. sort of always a bit

  694. of a touchstone

  695. early on

  696. and that was a statement

  697. by Dostoevsky

  698. that if God is dead,

  699. all things are permissible.

  700. If God is dead,

  701. all things are permissible.

  702. And I,

  703. I actually think

  704. that outside of the Christian faith

  705. that's unanswerable.

  706. I think it's unanswerable.

  707. And,

  708. um,

  709. if God is dead,

  710. all things are permissible.

  711. And,

  712. um,

  713. and that was always part of the thing

  714. that helped me to frame it

  715. that other systems of thought

  716. weren't really wrestling with this

  717. that amongst other things,

  718. whether,

  719. whether I was just dealing

  720. with the claims of science

  721. or,

  722. because I,

  723. I did sociology,

  724. social science backgrounds,

  725. which as you know

  726. have a,

  727. a leeching effect

  728. of taking away

  729. the Christian faith.

  730. There are far fewer sociologists

  731. or psychologists

  732. who are Christians

  733. than physicists.

  734. Um,

  735. that's a whole other topic

  736. of conversation

  737. as to why that would be.

  738. There's a physicist

  739. in the room.

  740. You might want to talk to him

  741. after,

  742. after the service,

  743. get his thoughts about it.

  744. But,

  745. um,

  746. but if God is dead,

  747. all things are permissible.

  748. But how could what happened

  749. in Peshawar

  750. be permissible?

  751. How can it not be the case

  752. that that is wrong?

  753. How could it not be?

  754. So some of you might say,

  755. okay, George,

  756. so you reject evil

  757. as an illusion.

  758. Um,

  759. and you're really also saying

  760. that the idea

  761. that evil is just an opinion,

  762. that it's a social construct,

  763. that it's just somebody's view.

  764. You think it's evil,

  765. but other people

  766. don't think it's evil.

  767. That things like Peshawar

  768. show that that's not the case.

  769. But, George,

  770. don't you sort of maybe think

  771. that,

  772. um,

  773. you need to have

  774. some evil and darkness

  775. in the world

  776. so that you can understand

  777. what's good?

  778. Um,

  779. a couple of weeks ago

  780. I saw on DVD

  781. the movie The Giver.

  782. And, um,

  783. and part of that,

  784. in fact,

  785. is, uh,

  786. that's actually part of the dialogue

  787. in the movie.

  788. It's a very, very common thing.

  789. I've heard many people

  790. say it to me in coffee shops,

  791. I've seen it in many movies,

  792. that, uh,

  793. the reason there's darkness,

  794. the reason there's evil,

  795. is because you need this

  796. to be able to see

  797. and understand,

  798. uh, the light.

  799. You need it to be able to see

  800. and understand goodness.

  801. Is,

  802. is that sort of what

  803. the Bible is saying here?

  804. Is that why there's sort of

  805. evil in the world?

  806. Well, let's say verses

  807. four and five again,

  808. if you could put that up.

  809. There we go.

  810. Say it with me.

  811. In him was life,

  812. and the life was the light

  813. of humankind.

  814. The light shines on

  815. in the darkness,

  816. but the darkness

  817. has not mastered it.

  818. That's the verse

  819. which we're looking at.

  820. And, um,

  821. so first of all,

  822. um,

  823. you'd see that if God,

  824. if,

  825. if God is good

  826. in and of himself,

  827. then he doesn't need evil

  828. to be able to understand him.

  829. Um,

  830. and if God is light,

  831. like,

  832. you can understand light

  833. without there being darkness.

  834. You can understand that,

  835. but,

  836. but the Bible's gonna actually

  837. say something,

  838. uh,

  839. far more profound.

  840. It's going to say,

  841. and if you could put this up,

  842. Andrew,

  843. evil is real,

  844. but it cannot master

  845. the uncreated light

  846. which shines on.

  847. Evil is real,

  848. but it cannot master

  849. the uncreated light

  850. which shines on.

  851. You know,

  852. you look at verse four,

  853. in him was life,

  854. and the life was the light

  855. of men.

  856. It's saying

  857. that Jesus,

  858. God,

  859. the son of God,

  860. is uncreated life,

  861. and that he is

  862. uncreated light.

  863. Unless some of us

  864. have had some type

  865. of a mystical vision

  866. of God,

  867. all we see

  868. is created light.

  869. But there is

  870. an uncreated light

  871. behind all light,

  872. and an uncreated life

  873. behind all life.

  874. And in Jesus,

  875. that's what we see.

  876. We see

  877. uncreated life

  878. and uncreated light.

  879. And in,

  880. in verse five,

  881. actually,

  882. Andrew,

  883. could you put up

  884. verse four and five again?

  885. Could you say it

  886. with me again?

  887. In him was life,

  888. and the life

  889. was the light

  890. of humankind.

  891. The light

  892. shines on

  893. in the darkness,

  894. and the darkness

  895. has not mastered it.

  896. The Bible here

  897. is saying

  898. that evil is real,

  899. but it cannot

  900. master the uncreated

  901. light which shines on.

  902. And in some

  903. of your Bible

  904. translations,

  905. probably none

  906. of your Bible

  907. translations

  908. uses the word

  909. mastered.

  910. Most of your

  911. Bible translations

  912. probably either use

  913. that the word

  914. can,

  915. that the evil,

  916. darkness,

  917. has not

  918. overcome it,

  919. or it says

  920. that darkness

  921. has not understood it.

  922. And this is a very

  923. interesting thing.

  924. In the original language,

  925. the word that John chose

  926. means one of those

  927. two things.

  928. And it means

  929. both of those

  930. two things.

  931. And most scholars

  932. believe that John

  933. chose the word

  934. precisely,

  935. and phrasing it

  936. in this precise way

  937. to try to communicate

  938. these two ideas

  939. at the same time.

  940. And that's exactly

  941. what John intended

  942. to do.

  943. But because in English,

  944. generally speaking,

  945. you can't do it

  946. until actually

  947. just a translation

  948. just written

  949. a couple of years ago

  950. suggested that

  951. mastered it

  952. captures it better

  953. because you can talk

  954. about mastering

  955. a subject

  956. in terms of

  957. knowing it,

  958. and you talk

  959. about mastering

  960. something in terms

  961. of overcoming it,

  962. you know,

  963. that you mastered

  964. your opponent

  965. or you mastered

  966. your subject.

  967. It's still not

  968. perfect because

  969. the word means

  970. both understand

  971. and overcome.

  972. And the first

  973. thing it's saying

  974. is that darkness

  975. can never

  976. understand light,

  977. that evil

  978. cannot understand

  979. goodness.

  980. It just can't.

  981. Like,

  982. do you think

  983. that those men

  984. who killed

  985. those 148 people,

  986. do you think

  987. they could understand

  988. Mother Teresa?

  989. I mean,

  990. let's be honest,

  991. most of us

  992. couldn't understand

  993. Mother Teresa,

  994. and we're not

  995. nearly as wicked

  996. as them.

  997. You know,

  998. and you just

  999. think about it

  1000. in general.

  1001. Like,

  1002. can a man

  1003. who's captivated

  1004. and consumed

  1005. with lust

  1006. in pornography,

  1007. while he is

  1008. consumed with

  1009. the lust

  1010. and the pornography,

  1011. can he

  1012. appreciate

  1013. the goodness?

  1014. Can he create,

  1015. can he at that

  1016. moment understand

  1017. the goodness

  1018. of sex

  1019. in its proper

  1020. place,

  1021. or the goodness

  1022. of a woman?

  1023. when one

  1024. of us

  1025. is consumed

  1026. with anger,

  1027. when we're

  1028. just so angry

  1029. and maybe

  1030. storming around

  1031. the house

  1032. and yelling,

  1033. at those moments

  1034. that we are

  1035. filled with anger,

  1036. do we understand

  1037. peace or quiet?

  1038. Do we understand

  1039. turning the other

  1040. cheek?

  1041. Do we understand

  1042. stillness and

  1043. self-possession?

  1044. sobriety?

  1045. In fact,

  1046. you know,

  1047. when a person

  1048. is completely

  1049. drunk,

  1050. do they understand

  1051. sobriety at that

  1052. moment?

  1053. Like,

  1054. if you think

  1055. about it for a

  1056. second,

  1057. isn't all evil,

  1058. isn't all

  1059. darkness,

  1060. do something

  1061. which stops

  1062. the human being

  1063. from being able

  1064. to understand

  1065. that which is

  1066. virtue or good?

  1067. And that's

  1068. what the Bible

  1069. is saying here.

  1070. The light shines

  1071. on in the

  1072. darkness,

  1073. but the darkness

  1074. has not understood

  1075. it.

  1076. And it's also

  1077. saying,

  1078. and it's here,

  1079. scholars think

  1080. that John is

  1081. in some ways

  1082. already pointing

  1083. to what's going

  1084. to happen at the

  1085. end of the

  1086. gospel,

  1087. the fact that

  1088. the God,

  1089. the Son of God,

  1090. the uncreated

  1091. light,

  1092. the uncreated

  1093. life will come

  1094. and walk

  1095. amongst us,

  1096. he'll die

  1097. upon the cross,

  1098. and that

  1099. that moment

  1100. that would

  1101. for darkness

  1102. seem as if it

  1103. was darkness's

  1104. greatest victory

  1105. with God,

  1106. the Son of God

  1107. dying upon the

  1108. cross,

  1109. is in fact

  1110. the moment

  1111. that darkness

  1112. is completely

  1113. and utterly

  1114. defeated.

  1115. It doesn't

  1116. understand that

  1117. the wrong thing

  1118. to do was to

  1119. put Jesus on

  1120. the cross

  1121. to kill him.

  1122. And that it's

  1123. moment of appearing

  1124. to overcome

  1125. God,

  1126. the Son of God

  1127. is the moment

  1128. that it's

  1129. defeated,

  1130. and that

  1131. Jesus,

  1132. tasting all

  1133. there is to

  1134. taste of

  1135. death,

  1136. after he's

  1137. tasted all

  1138. there is to

  1139. taste of

  1140. sin and

  1141. evil and

  1142. hostile

  1143. spiritual

  1144. powers,

  1145. rises

  1146. triumphant

  1147. over sin

  1148. and death

  1149. and all

  1150. hostile

  1151. spiritual

  1152. powers in

  1153. his

  1154. resurrection,

  1155. because the

  1156. darkness

  1157. has not

  1158. overcome it.

  1159. And that's

  1160. why it says

  1161. the light

  1162. shines on.

  1163. I chose

  1164. the net

  1165. version of

  1166. the Bible

  1167. because it

  1168. emphasizes that

  1169. the light

  1170. shines and

  1171. that it

  1172. shines on.

  1173. You see,

  1174. friends,

  1175. this is the

  1176. reason that

  1177. as texts

  1178. like this

  1179. enter into

  1180. our heads,

  1181. that's why

  1182. it is,

  1183. in confidence

  1184. of this text,

  1185. that we can

  1186. walk towards

  1187. darkness.

  1188. Not walk

  1189. towards darkness

  1190. so that the

  1191. darkness will

  1192. overwhelm us.

  1193. The darkness

  1194. will claim

  1195. that it has

  1196. to always

  1197. exist.

  1198. The darkness

  1199. will claim

  1200. that it's

  1201. necessary for

  1202. us to

  1203. understand the

  1204. good.

  1205. darkness

  1206. will claim

  1207. that we

  1208. have to

  1209. make our

  1210. peace with

  1211. it,

  1212. that we

  1213. have to

  1214. make our

  1215. peace with

  1216. our alcoholism

  1217. or with

  1218. our addictions

  1219. or with

  1220. pornography or

  1221. we have to

  1222. make peace

  1223. with prostitution

  1224. or all

  1225. sorts of other

  1226. things that we

  1227. need to make

  1228. peace with

  1229. this because

  1230. these things

  1231. are somehow

  1232. necessary,

  1233. that we

  1234. need to

  1235. make peace

  1236. with people

  1237. who will

  1238. butcher 148

  1239. innocent people

  1240. and evil

  1241. and darkness

  1242. will always say

  1243. that it is

  1244. necessary and

  1245. this text

  1246. says that the

  1247. light shines

  1248. on and

  1249. that we

  1250. are to

  1251. walk towards

  1252. the darkness

  1253. to shine

  1254. light,

  1255. that the

  1256. darkness

  1257. will be

  1258. no more.

  1259. We understand

  1260. that the

  1261. darkness,

  1262. that that final

  1263. overcoming the

  1264. darkness will

  1265. only happen

  1266. when Jesus

  1267. returns in

  1268. his second

  1269. coming and

  1270. the new

  1271. heaven and

  1272. the new

  1273. earth are

  1274. brought in,

  1275. but on

  1276. this side

  1277. of the

  1278. grave still

  1279. we walk

  1280. towards the

  1281. darkness in

  1282. our own

  1283. life.

  1284. No,

  1285. I do not

  1286. have to

  1287. make peace

  1288. with my

  1289. addiction.

  1290. No,

  1291. I do not

  1292. have to

  1293. make peace

  1294. with these

  1295. memories

  1296. that completely

  1297. torment me.

  1298. No,

  1299. I do not

  1300. have to

  1301. make peace

  1302. with the

  1303. voice of

  1304. accusation

  1305. in my

  1306. head.

  1307. No,

  1308. we do not

  1309. have to

  1310. make peace

  1311. with darkness

  1312. in the

  1313. world.

  1314. We can

  1315. walk

  1316. towards it

  1317. because the

  1318. light shines

  1319. on and the

  1320. darkness has

  1321. not mastered

  1322. it and never

  1323. will.

  1324. It is the

  1325. basis to

  1326. walk towards

  1327. evil,

  1328. evil,

  1329. to humbly

  1330. walk towards

  1331. evil,

  1332. to resist

  1333. it,

  1334. to say

  1335. no,

  1336. to shine

  1337. light,

  1338. the light

  1339. of life,

  1340. the light

  1341. of truth,

  1342. the light

  1343. of goodness,

  1344. the light

  1345. of mercy,

  1346. the light

  1347. of peace,

  1348. the light

  1349. of justice.

  1350. So some

  1351. of you

  1352. might say,

  1353. oh,

  1354. George,

  1355. now you

  1356. just all

  1357. of a sudden,

  1358. George,

  1359. I thought

  1360. you said

  1361. that you

  1362. were a

  1363. marsh wiggle.

  1364. All of a

  1365. sudden,

  1366. you sound

  1367. like some

  1368. blind

  1369. optimist.

  1370. Good grief,

  1371. George.

  1372. What happened

  1373. to George,

  1374. my marsh wiggle

  1375. puddle glum

  1376. friend at the

  1377. front?

  1378. All of a

  1379. sudden,

  1380. the evil

  1381. is not the

  1382. final word

  1383. and the

  1384. words of

  1385. Winston

  1386. Churchill.

  1387. We will

  1388. fight it

  1389. on the

  1390. beaches.

  1391. We will

  1392. fight it

  1393. in the

  1394. fields.

  1395. We will

  1396. fight it

  1397. street to

  1398. street.

  1399. We will

  1400. fight it

  1401. in our

  1402. hearts.

  1403. Well,

  1404. you see,

  1405. the fact

  1406. is,

  1407. let's look

  1408. at the

  1409. text and

  1410. then let's

  1411. look at

  1412. what happens

  1413. just after

  1414. verses 4

  1415. and 5.

  1416. I wonder

  1417. if you

  1418. could put

  1419. verses 4

  1420. to 8

  1421. up there

  1422. on the

  1423. screen

  1424. and let's

  1425. read it

  1426. together.

  1427. There we

  1428. go.

  1429. Please read

  1430. it with

  1431. me.

  1432. In him

  1433. was life

  1434. and the

  1435. life was

  1436. the light

  1437. of humankind.

  1438. The light

  1439. shines on

  1440. in the

  1441. darkness,

  1442. but the

  1443. darkness

  1444. has not

  1445. mastered it.

  1446. There was

  1447. a man sent

  1448. from God

  1449. whose name

  1450. was John.

  1451. He came

  1452. as a witness

  1453. to bear witness

  1454. about the

  1455. light that

  1456. all might

  1457. believe through

  1458. him.

  1459. He was not

  1460. the light,

  1461. but came

  1462. to bear

  1463. witness about

  1464. the light.

  1465. all of

  1466. a sudden

  1467. it goes

  1468. in verses

  1469. 1 to 5

  1470. of these

  1471. profound

  1472. philosophical,

  1473. theological,

  1474. spiritual

  1475. categories and

  1476. ideas,

  1477. and all of

  1478. a sudden

  1479. it shifts

  1480. to history.

  1481. Notice that?

  1482. There was a

  1483. man sent

  1484. from God

  1485. whose name

  1486. was John.

  1487. John.

  1488. There was

  1489. a man sent

  1490. from God

  1491. whose name

  1492. was John.

  1493. And now

  1494. John is

  1495. starting to

  1496. narrow it,

  1497. the gospel

  1498. is starting

  1499. to narrow

  1500. it as

  1501. he's

  1502. introducing

  1503. Jesus to

  1504. talk about

  1505. Jesus of

  1506. Nazareth.

  1507. In fact,

  1508. if you could

  1509. put up

  1510. verse 14,

  1511. Andrew,

  1512. you folks

  1513. could say

  1514. that with

  1515. me.

  1516. And the

  1517. word became

  1518. flesh and

  1519. dwelt among

  1520. us,

  1521. and we have

  1522. seen his

  1523. glory,

  1524. glory as of

  1525. the only son

  1526. from the

  1527. father,

  1528. full of

  1529. grace and

  1530. truth.

  1531. See, the

  1532. Bible is

  1533. saying a

  1534. most profound

  1535. thing.

  1536. John wants

  1537. to introduce

  1538. Jesus.

  1539. He wants

  1540. to say,

  1541. here's

  1542. Jesus.

  1543. Who's

  1544. Jesus?

  1545. And John

  1546. chooses to

  1547. introduce

  1548. Jesus in

  1549. these grand

  1550. narrative,

  1551. in these

  1552. grand

  1553. philosophical,

  1554. theological,

  1555. spiritual ideas,

  1556. and he's

  1557. saying,

  1558. if you could

  1559. put up the

  1560. point,

  1561. Andrew,

  1562. that Jesus,

  1563. Jesus of

  1564. Nazareth,

  1565. in a sense,

  1566. is the

  1567. uncreated

  1568. light made

  1569. flesh.

  1570. He walked

  1571. among us

  1572. where darkness

  1573. is.

  1574. That's what

  1575. the Bible

  1576. is saying.

  1577. That's how

  1578. John is

  1579. introducing

  1580. Jesus.

  1581. Who is

  1582. Jesus?

  1583. How should

  1584. I talk

  1585. about

  1586. Jesus?

  1587. Jesus is

  1588. real.

  1589. He was a

  1590. person in

  1591. history.

  1592. He had an

  1593. adopted father,

  1594. he had

  1595. mother,

  1596. he had

  1597. brothers and

  1598. sisters.

  1599. brothers.

  1600. We don't

  1601. know,

  1602. but if

  1603. you went

  1604. back in

  1605. time,

  1606. you'd be

  1607. able to

  1608. find out

  1609. that he

  1610. probably

  1611. thought his

  1612. mom's

  1613. homus was

  1614. the best

  1615. homus in

  1616. the world.

  1617. Just like

  1618. probably most

  1619. Jewish boys

  1620. thought their

  1621. mother's

  1622. homus was

  1623. the best

  1624. homus in

  1625. the world

  1626. back then.

  1627. I don't

  1628. know,

  1629. maybe still,

  1630. I don't

  1631. know.

  1632. And all

  1633. of a sudden

  1634. it comes to

  1635. history.

  1636. But this

  1637. person,

  1638. born in

  1639. Bethlehem,

  1640. but known

  1641. as Jesus

  1642. of Nazareth,

  1643. he really

  1644. is the

  1645. uncreated

  1646. light made

  1647. flesh,

  1648. and he

  1649. walked among

  1650. us where

  1651. darkness is.

  1652. I mean,

  1653. we remember

  1654. the Roman

  1655. Empire for

  1656. its many

  1657. great things,

  1658. but we also

  1659. have to

  1660. remember that

  1661. it was a

  1662. place that

  1663. one-third

  1664. of the people

  1665. who lived

  1666. in the

  1667. Roman Empire

  1668. were slaves.

  1669. One-third.

  1670. One-third.

  1671. Isn't that

  1672. mind-boggling?

  1673. One-third.

  1674. And he

  1675. walked among

  1676. us.

  1677. And that's

  1678. why you see

  1679. that John

  1680. is going to

  1681. actually,

  1682. as all of

  1683. the gospel

  1684. writers and

  1685. all of the

  1686. gospel witnesses,

  1687. they'll make

  1688. claims that

  1689. Jesus really

  1690. did exist,

  1691. that you

  1692. read the

  1693. gospels and

  1694. you read the

  1695. other early

  1696. Christian witnesses

  1697. and they get

  1698. the historical

  1699. details.

  1700. They try to

  1701. get them

  1702. right and

  1703. they do

  1704. get them

  1705. right.

  1706. And they

  1707. get the

  1708. details right

  1709. and they

  1710. tell the

  1711. story right

  1712. and they

  1713. want to

  1714. communicate

  1715. that this

  1716. guy actually

  1717. did walk

  1718. amongst us

  1719. and he had

  1720. a three-year

  1721. ministry and

  1722. that he

  1723. really did

  1724. perform these

  1725. miracles and

  1726. that here

  1727. we're giving

  1728. you a copy

  1729. of the things

  1730. that he

  1731. actually said

  1732. and they're

  1733. going to

  1734. culminate with

  1735. this other

  1736. massive historical

  1737. claim that he

  1738. really did die

  1739. upon the cross,

  1740. that he was

  1741. sentenced upon

  1742. death,

  1743. that he died

  1744. upon the cross,

  1745. that he was

  1746. buried in a

  1747. particular tomb

  1748. on the outskirts

  1749. of Jerusalem on

  1750. a particular day

  1751. of the week and

  1752. that on another

  1753. particular day of

  1754. the week that

  1755. there were women

  1756. who went to go

  1757. and anoint the

  1758. body as a sign

  1759. of respect and

  1760. the body was

  1761. gone and other

  1762. people went and

  1763. the body was

  1764. gone and the

  1765. stone was rolled

  1766. away and many

  1767. people could have

  1768. gone to see that

  1769. the body was

  1770. gone and then

  1771. people claim that

  1772. they'd seen him

  1773. alive and not

  1774. alive as a person

  1775. who'd been

  1776. crucified.

  1777. In fact, in all

  1778. of Roman history,

  1779. in all of Roman

  1780. history, there were

  1781. thousands and

  1782. thousands, hundreds

  1783. of thousands of

  1784. crucifixions in all

  1785. of human history.

  1786. There is only one

  1787. record, one record

  1788. of one man who

  1789. ever survived

  1790. crucifixion and

  1791. that was with

  1792. crucifixion

  1793. interrupted and

  1794. medical help

  1795. immediately there to

  1796. try to care for

  1797. him and he

  1798. barely survived.

  1799. all of history,

  1800. one survival of

  1801. crucifixion and

  1802. it is undeniably

  1803. historically the

  1804. case.

  1805. Mentioned in Roman

  1806. and other

  1807. historians that

  1808. Jesus died upon

  1809. the cross and

  1810. John and others

  1811. want you to say

  1812. and understand that

  1813. this same Jesus of

  1814. Nazareth predicted

  1815. that he would die

  1816. upon the cross,

  1817. predicted that he

  1818. would rise from

  1819. the dead, that the

  1820. tomb was empty, that

  1821. the historical records

  1822. show it, that there's

  1823. historical records that

  1824. he appeared alive,

  1825. fully, completely,

  1826. massively alive to

  1827. many people in many

  1828. locations in over

1829. 40 days and that the

  1830. resurrection of

  1831. Jesus vindicates the

  1832. person and the

  1833. message of Jesus,

  1834. that Jesus was

  1835. uncreated light,

  1836. made flesh, who

  1837. walked among us

  1838. where darkness is.

  1839. Now, this week I've

  1840. had two conversations

  1841. about God and

  1842. evil.

  1843. The first one was

  1844. with a person, I

  1845. won't say anything

  1846. more, but she

  1847. shared with me that

  1848. any time she starts

  1849. to feel getting a

  1850. little bit drawn

  1851. towards the

  1852. Christian faith or

  1853. some other religion,

  1854. she goes to

  1855. Netflix and she

  1856. watches the movie

  1857. Frailty.

  1858. I haven't seen it

  1859. yet, it's on my

  1860. to-do list, but I

  1861. read the Wikipedia

  1862. summary, it's about

1863. a man who comes and

  1864. tells his two boys

  1865. that God has told

  1866. him to start

  1867. murdering people.

  1868. And the movie then

  1869. is about the man,

  1870. with or without the

  1871. help of his sons,

  1872. murdering people

  1873. because that's what

1874. God has told him to

  1875. do.

  1876. And my friend said

  1877. that any time she

  1878. starts to feel that

  1879. she's getting close to

  1880. accepting something

  1881. to do with

  1882. spirituality or

  1883. religion, to

  1884. cleanse her mind,

  1885. she watches that

  1886. movie.

  1887. And a fellow just

1888. told me, we had a

  1889. long talk in a

  1890. coffee shop just

  1891. yesterday, just

  1892. before I started to

  1893. work on this, finish

  1894. up the sermon, and

  1895. he was talking about

1896. what just went on in

  1897. Peshawar, and he

  1898. was saying, George,

  1899. that's what religion

  1900. and that's what

  1901. spirituality does.

  1902. It creates within

  1903. you that I'm right,

  1904. that we're right,

  1905. that our tribe is

  1906. right, everybody

  1907. else is wrong,

  1908. therefore we can

  1909. go and kill and

  1910. do whatever we

  1911. want because we

  1912. have some divine

  1913. special place.

  1914. And he said it

  1915. justifies evil, it

  1916. justifies cruelty, it

  1917. justifies wickedness,

  1918. it's justified in

  1919. Christianity, it

  1920. justifies in Islam,

  1921. in Buddhism, in

  1922. every religion.

  1923. That's what it does,

  1924. George.

  1925. Let's read the

  1926. text again, if you

  1927. could put up verses

  1928. four to eight.

  1929. Could you read this

  1930. with me?

1931. In him was life, and

  1932. the life was the

  1933. light of humankind.

  1934. The light shines on

  1935. in the darkness, but

  1936. the darkness has not

  1937. mastered it.

1938. There was a man sent

  1939. from God whose name

  1940. was John.

  1941. He came as a

  1942. witness to bear

  1943. witness about the

  1944. light, that all

  1945. might believe through

  1946. him.

  1947. He was not the

  1948. light, but came to

  1949. bear witness about

  1950. the light.

1951. What I said to my

  1952. friends are a

  1953. little bit different

  1954. than what this text

  1955. is similar, but I

  1956. said to the first

  1957. one that Christians

  1958. should never feel

  1959. that they're special,

  1960. and Christians should

  1961. never feel that

  1962. somehow their ideas

  1963. or their sacred

  1964. text,

  1965. text,

  1966. or their poetry

  1967. or their

  1968. philosophy,

  1969. that if a

  1970. Christian doesn't

  1971. understand that

  1972. they're a beggar

  1973. who's received

  1974. something from God

  1975. completely undeserved,

  1976. they haven't

  1977. understood the

  1978. Christian faith.

  1979. I told her, I am

  1980. one beggar telling

  1981. another beggar where

  1982. to find bread.

  1983. people who are a

  1984. Christian faith in the

  1985. world.

  1986. I said to my

  1987. other friend that

  1988. the problem of evil

  1989. and the problem of

  1990. murder is not a

  1991. religious problem, it's

  1992. a human problem, and

  1993. that's why the

  1994. countries that he

  1995. posits or points to

  1996. as being spiritual but

  1997. not religious, high

  1998. percentage of people

  1999. saying that that's what

2000. they are or that they

  2001. don't believe in any

  2002. God, that one of

  2003. those nations that is

2004. very high and that is

2005. China, which is one of

  2006. the worst abusers of

  2007. human rights on the

  2008. planet.

  2009. Another one is North

  2010. Korea, the worst abuser

2011. of human rights on the

  2012. planet.

2013. And I said that the

  2014. atheistic states that

  2015. have existed like the

  2016. Union of USSR, terrible

  2017. abusers of human rights.

2018. And I said the issue

  2019. isn't whether or not

  2020. evil happens, but

  2021. whether your philosophy

  2022. and your worldview can

  2023. understand it and has

  2024. the resources and the

2025. help to deal with it.

2026. See, here's the thing to

  2027. understand with all of

  2028. these things.

2029. You know, so far I've

2030. said that God is light

2031. and in him there is no

  2032. darkness at all.

2033. I've said that the true

2034. and living God created all

  2035. things good.

2036. He did not create evil.

  2037. Evil is a blinding,

  2038. breaking, bending,

  2039. hiding, blurring,

  2040. emptying of the good.

2041. And that evil is real,

2042. but it cannot master the

  2043. uncreated light which

  2044. shines on.

2045. And that Jesus is the

  2046. uncreated light made

  2047. flesh.

2048. He walked among us where

  2049. darkness is.

2050. And here's the thing we

  2051. have to understand when

  2052. we hear this.

  2053. The fifth point.

  2054. The dividing line between

  2055. light and darkness, good

2056. and evil, is not between

  2057. people.

2058. It is a line within every

  2059. person.

  2060. The dividing line between

  2061. light and darkness, good

2062. and evil, is not between

  2063. people.

2064. It is a line within every

  2065. person.

2066. If you leave here thinking

2067. we are the people of light

2068. and out there is darkness,

  2069. you've misheard the

  2070. scripture.

2071. If you go away from here

2072. thinking that Canada is the

2073. place of light and the rest

2074. of the world is darkness,

  2075. you've misheard the

  2076. scripture.

2077. If you go away thinking

  2078. that all Christians are

2079. light and the rest of the

  2080. world who are not

  2081. Christians are darkness, you

  2082. have misheard the

  2083. scripture.

  2084. The scripture wants to

  2085. understand that Jesus

  2086. walked amongst, walked

  2087. among us where darkness

2088. is and that he looks you

2089. and me in the eyes and he

2090. sees that the dividing line

2091. between good and evil runs

2092. right down the center of who

  2093. we are.

2094. That part of us is darkness

2095. and part of us loves

  2096. darkness.

2097. And in fact that there is

2098. something within us which is

2099. good and beautiful and whole

2100. and that the line between them

2101. is often very blurred and

2102. confused and we are often very

2103. blurred and confused in terms of

  2104. what we want.

2105. because the line between light

2106. and darkness runs down the

2107. center of every single person

  2108. who is here.

2109. See in fact the Bible is trying

2110. to tell us that if God is light

2111. and in him is no darkness at all

2112. how can we come to God when

2113. darkness clings to me and darkness

2114. darkness clings to you and you

2115. cannot shake the darkness and you

2116. never can shake the darkness and

2117. even in great moments of moral

2118. triumph you often can end up being

2119. proud of your moral triumph and so

2120. the darkness rears its head.

2121. We're not going to read the text.

2122. Just listen to me as I read part of

  2123. the text.

2124. In verse 7 it said he came as a

2125. witness to bear witness about the

2126. light that all might believe through

  2127. him.

2128. He was not the light, that's John the

2129. Baptist, but came to bear witness

  2130. about the light.

2131. And in verse 7 when it says the word

2132. believe it says it gives us the most

2133. important verb in the book of John.

2134. The word believe will occur 98 times.

2135. It sort of gives you an idea that

2136. that's what John wants us to do is to

  2137. believe in Jesus.

2138. In fact, if you could put up the final

  2139. point, Andrew.

2140. The Bible is teaching us that Jesus of

2141. Nazareth did it all in his life and in

2142. his death upon the cross.

2143. And when I believe in him, I receive it

  2144. all.

2145. See, that's what the text says.

2146. It's pointing to why Jesus comes, that

2147. Jesus in whom there is no darkness takes

2148. upon himself my darkness and your

  2149. darkness.

2150. That Jesus in whom there is no darkness

2151. and evil takes upon himself the

2152. consequences of our darkness, the

2153. punishment that our darkness deserves.

2154. He takes that upon himself when he dies

2155. upon the cross in our stead.

2156. And he goes into the place of death, into

2157. the place of darkness, into the place of

  2158. sin.

2159. He tastes all there is to taste of that

  2160. with nothing left over.

2161. And he does that in my stead and in your

  2162. stead, in our place.

2163. And then he rises from the dead,

2164. triumphant over sin and death and all

2165. hostile spiritual powers in his

  2166. resurrection.

2167. And when we put our trust in him, believe

2168. him, receive him, we receive all that he

  2169. does for us.

  2170. That's what we receive.

  2171. He does it all.

2172. You know, in fact, which is very

2173. interesting in the Gospel of John, there's

2174. 98 times where the verb believe happens, and

2175. not once is there an adjective or an

  2176. adverb with it.

2177. What that means in simple English is that

2178. it never says strong belief, pure belief,

  2179. deep belief, full belief.

  2180. It never qualifies it.

2181. Because, you see, if John qualified it, then

2182. it would be a type of work that we have to

2183. add to what Jesus does for us on the

  2184. cross.

2185. That I have to have my discipleship in

  2186. order.

2187. I have to be exemplary.

2188. I have to have the right psychological

  2189. condition.

2190. I have to have the right type of emotional

  2191. experience.

2192. I have to have the right type of life.

2193. I have to get the right types of things

2194. organized in my life because I have to

2195. add these things to belief.

2196. But the Bible is telling us that we are to

2197. understand ourselves as beggars who can

2198. only stand empty-handed and say to the

2199. Father, Father, darkness clings to me.

2200. There is a darkness which is in within me,

2201. which I am powerless to overcome and to

  2202. rid myself of.

2203. And I thank you that uncreated life came and

2204. walked amongst us and died upon the cross.

2205. And that in his death upon the cross and

2206. resurrection, that he accomplishes something

2207. that I cannot accomplish by myself.

2208. And so, Father, I come to Jesus.

2209. I invite him to come into my life.

2210. I give him permission to be in my life.

2211. And all I can do is ask that I can receive that

2212. which only Jesus can do and has done for me.

2213. All I can do is receive Jesus.

  2214. All I can do.

2215. And as I receive Jesus alone, he changes me.

2216. He leads me to change us.

2217. We're gripped by the gospel.

2218. We realize that we can walk towards the evil in

2219. our culture and walk towards the evil in

  2220. our society.

2221. That we can walk towards the evil in

  2222. ourselves.

2223. That we can walk towards it to deal with it.

2224. Because the idea that Jesus walked amongst

2225. us and that the uncreated life will never be

2226. mastered by darkness is not now just an

2227. abstract, optimistic truth, but a real lived

2228. experience as the gospel grips us.

2229. That I might not have the power to overcome the

2230. darkness, but I am carried by the one who has

  2231. overcome all darkness.

2232. And so, as I am carried by him, I can walk towards

  2233. darkness to shine light.

2234. Darkness outside and darkness within.

  2235. Please stand.

  2236. Thank you.

2237. Just bow our heads in prayer.

2238. Father, we give you thanks and praise that you see us

2239. perfectly and still you love us.

2240. We give you thanks and praise, Father, that you

2241. have known us from the moment of our conception to

  2242. this very moment.

2243. And, Father, since all things are present for you, you

2244. even know, well, Father, you know whether I'm going to

2245. live another day or live another 50 years.

2246. And, Father, you know me from the moment of my

2247. conception to the moment of my death.

2248. And you know me perfectly.

2249. Father, you know the dreams I have at night that I do not

2250. remember when I wake up.

2251. You see every mask that I wear.

2252. You see every how I move from mask to mask.

2253. Father, you see everything there is to see about me.

2254. You know, Father, the darkness in me.

2255. You know the darkness that clings to me.

2256. You know the darkness, Father, which I am blind to and

  2257. which I'm afraid of.

2258. And you know the darkness I delight in.

2259. And still you love me, seeing me so perfectly.

  2260. Still you love me.

2261. And still your Son, knowing who I am and knowing who we are,

2262. died on the cross for us.

2263. Uncreated light dying for us who have darkness within and

  2264. clinging to us.

2265. Father, we thank you that you know us so perfectly and that

2266. your Son still came to rescue us and to deliver us.

2267. We thank you for his sinless life, his mighty miracles, his

  2268. mighty teaching.

2269. And most of all, we thank you for his death upon the cross on

2270. our behalf and his mighty resurrection.

2271. Father, instill within us, grow within us, a simple belief and

  2272. trust in Jesus.

2273. May we be disciples of Jesus, gripped by the gospel, who now live for

  2274. his glory.

2275. And this we ask in Jesus' name, your Son and our Savior.

  2276. Amen.

  2277. Amen.

  2278. Amen.

  2279. Amen.

  2280. Amen.

  2281. Amen.

  2282. Amen.
