  1. Father, we ask that you would gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit upon us as we read your word and think upon your word.

  2. Father, it's very easy for us to want to twist your word into the things that we want it to say, to twist your word into the things that we want to believe.

  3. Father, you know as well, Father, how hard it is for us to actually attend to your word, how other thoughts will come into our mind that make it hard for us to actually dwell with your word and have your word dwell within us.

  4. So we ask, Father, that you in your grace and mercy and kindness would help us, Father, to think upon your word, to hear your word, to have your word enter deep into our minds and hearts and wills, our very souls, so that your word will bear much fruit in our lives for your glory.

  5. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  6. Please be seated.

  7. So, I'm actually, we're actually looking at a passage of the Bible that, this morning, that for many years, in the early years of my Christian walk, I was afraid of.

  8. There were certain ideas about the Christian faith that when I started to hear somebody trying to explain them to me, they made me sort of frightened.

  9. I don't know why it was.

  10. It's just maybe because it started to almost like make my mind hurt to try to get my mind around these ideas.

  11. And when I couldn't get my mind around these ideas, it sort of frightened me.

  12. And this is like a true confession, but it did.

  13. And this whole idea that I would hear that, you know, I would think to myself one moment, if Jesus is both God and man, one moment, like, how can he be God and man?

  14. And how, like, how could that work?

  15. Does, like, how could he sort of exist before he was born and then be born?

  16. And then, and like if he was man, who was like keeping the planets in their course?

  17. And it just, it, trying to hear people explain it to me just sort of frightened me.

  18. And, and so I almost wanted to keep turning away from it.

  19. And, and so I, I'm looking, we were going to have a guest preacher this morning.

  20. And, but he, he gave me good notice.

  21. He wasn't able to come.

  22. And I was originally going to finish my sermon series with verse 14.

  23. So I thought, well, I'll just keep going 15 to 18, which is the, sort of the full prologue.

  24. And, and then I looked at the text and it sort of brought back my memories of, of being afraid of these types of ideas.

  25. Like, how is it that Jesus could be in the womb and be God?

  26. And, and it was just, I, I, I was sort of frightened a little bit by it.

  27. And I thought, oh, I'm going to get to just talk about it today.

  28. And, you know, one of the things that helped me to understand this text, it was actually horror movies.

  29. Which sounds very, very odd and bizarre.

  30. And I, I don't watch very many horror movies.

  31. I, I don't know, maybe my imagination's too active.

  32. And I, and I just, I, I have a hard time with it.

  33. And I have other problems with it as well.

  34. But it was actually thinking about horror movies that actually started to give me a little bit of an idea about how to understand texts like this.

  35. And actually a doctrine about Jesus.

  36. So if you have your Bibles, please open them to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  37. We'll start reading at verse 14.

  38. But today we're looking at verses 15 to 18.

  39. And if by chance you've forgotten your Bibles, we always have a few Bibles up here at the front.

  40. You're welcome to take them.

  41. You can keep them as a gift afterwards or you can return them afterwards.

  42. It's up to you.

  43. And, and we're going to look.

  44. We'll start verse 14.

  45. But it's, it's verse 15 where we start to enter into the, enter into the sermon.

  46. And here's how it goes.

  47. It's the great Christmas text.

  48. And the word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  49. And we have seen his glory.

  50. Glory as of the only son from the father, full of grace and truth.

  51. Here's our text.

  52. John, that's John the Baptist, bore witness about him and cried out,

  53. So in one level, this is teaching us a very, very simple truth.

  54. It's teaching us that Jesus is both God and man.

  55. That Jesus of Nazareth, in fact, is God and man.

  56. And it's going to be, John is going to try to be burrowing home into us that this historical person that he knew,

  57. that he watched him eat, he watched him get tired, he heard him speak,

  58. he spent three years with him in close proximity,

  59. that this historical person, Jesus of Nazareth,

  60. that if we went back in time in a time machine,

  61. we'd be able to see Jesus.

  62. And maybe after lunch, we'd see that he had a little bit of parsley in his beard from his tabbouleh,

  63. that he'd eaten at lunch,

  64. and we'd see that he maybe had to, after walking for an hour,

  65. that his feet were dirty and his hands maybe were dirty,

  66. and he looked a bit sweaty.

  67. And we'd see him be thirsty, and we'd see this human being.

  68. But John wants us to understand that when we see Jesus of Nazareth,

  69. we're not just seeing a human being,

  70. we're seeing someone who is both God and man.

  71. But he's not, he's not,

  72. and I'll get to it because it's in the language and the text,

  73. he's not like, I can't remember,

  74. who was the heroine in the Shrek movies?

  75. You know in the first Shrek movie,

  76. she's a troll by night,

  77. no, yeah, troll by night and a beautiful princess during the day,

  78. which I can't remember her name.

  79. There you go, Fiona.

  80. So Jesus isn't sort of like Fiona,

  81. sort of cursed by a witch,

  82. and at night he's one thing,

  83. and at day he's another thing.

  84. He's not like Jacqueline Hyde,

  85. sort of two contrasting personalities,

  86. but they're both human personalities in the same person.

  87. And Jesus isn't like the Borg,

  88. which are bits and pieces of human beings,

  89. and bits and pieces of machine,

  90. and bits and pieces of a collective,

  91. and a whole mishmash,

  92. and ultimately sort of ravenous and devouring and evil.

  93. And Jesus isn't like a little bit of God,

  94. and a little bit of human.

  95. The text is actually trying to tell us

  96. in a very, very simple but powerful way,

  97. and even grasping with the fact

  98. that if Jesus actually is both God and man,

  99. then there's sort of a,

  100. before and after are going to mean

  101. very, very radically different things for Jesus

  102. than they do for you and me.

  103. I was born on a particular day,

  104. and before that,

  105. I mean, I would have been in my mother's womb,

  106. but before I was conceived,

  107. I didn't exist at all.

  108. And that's just what human beings are like.

  109. That's what every human being is like.

  110. And if Jesus is both God and man,

  111. then that's going to all be sort of very complicated.

  112. And this text captures it very, very beautifully.

  113. So that when you read creeds

  114. like the Athanasian Creed

  115. that try to articulate it in a different way,

  116. the creeds are just trying to articulate

  117. the witness of the apostles,

  118. the witnesses who actually knew Jesus.

  119. And here we see, look in verse 15,

  120. it's this very, very odd phrase.

  121. John bore witness about him and cried out,

  122. this was he of whom I said,

  123. and here's the funny thing,

  124. he who comes after me ranks before me

  125. because he was before me.

  126. And so what John is saying,

  127. he who comes after me,

  128. like if you read all of the gospels,

  129. and John,

  130. most scholars think that John

  131. was the last of the four gospels to be written.

  132. And so,

  133. and I think,

  134. and many scholars think

  135. that John was aware of the other gospels.

  136. And so John wrote,

  137. decided that he would write his gospel

  138. in a very, very different manner

  139. to capture a different side of Jesus,

  140. in a sense,

  141. the more private side of Jesus

  142. and the way he could privately talk sometimes.

  143. And,

  144. and,

  145. and,

  146. but it's,

  147. it's clear from the witnesses of the gospels

  148. that Jesus began his ministry

  149. after John the Baptist did.

  150. It's not clear from the records how long after,

  151. but John was a well-known public figure

  152. and Jesus was unknown.

  153. And it's well-known from the gospels,

  154. from the historical records,

  155. that Jesus was actually baptized by John,

  156. which could imply that John was greater than him.

  157. But it's very,

  158. very clear that John had disciples,

  159. he had a public ministry,

  160. he had a high public profile,

  161. he was attracting crowds long before Jesus.

  162. And,

  163. and that sort of captures with this one,

  164. when John says,

  165. this was he of whom I said,

  166. he who comes after me.

  167. And then he says,

  168. ranks before me.

  169. And that's a perfectly good English translation.

  170. And the original language,

  171. it's saying that he's vastly superior to me.

  172. He's incomparably greater than me.

  173. And in the context of all of John's gospel,

  174. in the beginning was the word,

  175. and the word was with God,

  176. and the word was God.

  177. He was in the beginning with God.

  178. All things were made through him,

  179. without him was not anything made that was made.

  180. In him was life.

  181. And in earlier sermons,

  182. we said that Jesus doesn't have life.

  183. He is life.

  184. Jesus doesn't have light.

  185. He is light.

  186. That Jesus,

  187. John is saying,

  188. okay,

  189. Jesus came after me,

  190. but he's vastly superior to me.

  191. And then look how it finishes.

  192. This was he of whom I said,

  193. he who comes after me ranks before me,

  194. because he was before me.

  195. And that's,

  196. once again,

  197. a good English translation,

  198. but in the original language,

  199. it's even stronger.

  200. It makes it clear that he's talking about the pre-existence of God,

  201. the Son of God.

  202. And here we get this mystery,

  203. that God,

  204. the Son of God,

  205. who was at the beginning,

  206. was there before the beginning.

  207. In a sense,

  208. if you read right from John 1 to the beginning,

  209. and it's saying that the Father and the Son were together,

  210. and they decided,

  211. let's light this fuse,

  212. which humanity will know is the Big Bang,

  213. and have bang,

  214. and have all of the galaxy sort of spring into existence.

  215. And the God,

  216. the Son of God,

  217. was there,

  218. because he was there from all eternity.

  219. And the God,

  220. the Son of God,

  221. stands completely and utterly outside of time.

  222. But this same God,

  223. the Son of God,

  224. sets aside his glory and splendor and divine prerogatives and appearance as God,

  225. and his majesty.

  226. And he sets all of these things aside,

  227. but God cannot stop being God,

  228. even though he set all of those things aside,

  229. even in a sense that he's made himself,

  230. excuse me,

  231. completely and utterly naked,

  232. so to speak.

  233. He sets all of these things aside.

  234. He can't stop being God.

  235. And then there is a turning point in the entire story of creation,

  236. where God takes into himself not only our human nature,

  237. but our human flesh.

  238. And not in some type of abstract, ethereal, ideal, idea way,

  239. but the only way to be human is to live in space and time and history,

  240. and to be born of the Virgin Mary,

  241. and to walk amongst us.

  242. And this second person of the Trinity,

  243. who was before all people existed,

  244. and caused all things to exist,

  245. takes into himself our human nature,

  246. and is born of the Virgin Mary,

  247. and walks amongst us.

  248. So on one hand,

  249. there's only Jesus.

  250. He's only one person,

  251. but he has these two natures.

  252. How did horror movies help me with this?

  253. You know,

  254. it's a very, very standard thing with horror movies,

  255. of possession,

  256. demonic possession.

  257. And those of you,

  258. not me,

  259. but those of you who like watching those types of movies,

  260. they have no problem.

  261. There's no type of a struggle intellectually

  262. with the idea that some hostile being

  263. will possess another being.

  264. And in some horror movies,

  265. you get an odd mixture,

  266. in the sense of the personality of the original person,

  267. and this new being.

  268. But we don't bat an eye at this idea

  269. that there can be a being

  270. that possesses another being.

  271. And the Bible's not saying

  272. that this is how it worked with Jesus,

  273. but it's just,

  274. it's portraying the same type of idea,

  275. that there can be God,

  276. the Son of God,

  277. who takes into himself our human nature,

  278. and he's still God,

  279. and now he's human,

  280. and he's completely human,

  281. and he's completely God,

  282. but you don't see flickers of him

  283. going from God to man,

  284. or different,

  285. it's just,

  286. he's just Jesus.

  287. And you can't read the Gospels

  288. without just being struck

  289. with the sheer consistency of Jesus,

  290. and his depth.

  291. He never,

  292. those of you who know mentally ill people,

  293. or people who struggle with

  294. different types of personalities,

  295. or hear voices,

  296. there's nothing of that in Jesus.

  297. He seems sane,

  298. and self-contained,

  299. and purposeful,

  300. and always himself.

  301. And John wants to say

  302. that as you're going to read now,

  303. because what's going to happen

  304. after verse 18

  305. is John starts to tell

  306. the actual story of Jesus.

  307. He says,

  308. well here's what John the Baptist

  309. said to the Pharisees,

  310. and Sadducees,

  311. and here's what he said

  312. to his disciples,

  313. and then here's what his disciples

  314. did when they saw Jesus,

  315. and here's what Jesus said

  316. to the disciples,

  317. and here's what the disciples

  318. said to Jesus,

  319. and then here's what he did

  320. when he went to a wedding,

  321. and here's what he did

  322. when he saw a sick person,

  323. and here's,

  324. and it goes on

  325. and tells the story.

  326. And John wants us to understand

  327. that as you're reading the story,

  328. he's making this outrageous claim

  329. before you begin to read it.

  330. That the one

  331. that you're going to read about,

  332. even though he comes after

  333. John the Baptist,

  334. is vastly superior

  335. to John the Baptist,

  336. in fact he's God,

  337. because he actually,

  338. as God,

  339. existed before

  340. the birth,

  341. his birth.

  342. Not in a reincarnation sense.

  343. In fact,

  344. this whole idea completely,

  345. you can see how sort of

  346. maybe through common grace

  347. the idea of reincarnation

  348. came to be,

  349. and it got sort of misunderstood

  350. that it was a type of a prophecy.

  351. It wasn't a type of a curse

  352. of endless existence,

  353. but it was almost like

  354. a type of a glimmer

  355. or an idea

  356. that God would come

  357. amongst us in some way,

  358. but the whole

  359. enfleshedness aspect of it

  360. completely and utterly

  361. refutes,

  362. but actually clarifies

  363. this Eastern India,

  364. Chinese type of

  365. bit of an insight

  366. about reality.

  367. They just don't understand

  368. that it's God

  369. coming and taking on flesh

  370. and walking amongst us.

  371. But here's the big thing.

  372. Andrew,

  373. if you could put up

  374. the next thing.

  375. This is to lead us

  376. to a particular type

  377. of prayer.

  378. And, you know,

  379. one of the things

  380. I can do,

  381. you know,

  382. if you came here

  383. this morning hoping

  384. that I was going to give you

  385. a whole pile of

  386. practical applications

  387. that would mean

  388. that you can get out of debt,

  389. get the promotion,

  390. get the body you want,

  391. you know,

  392. get the kids you want,

  393. get the husband

  394. or wife you want,

  395. I mean,

  396. we're not going to do that today.

  397. In fact,

  398. we don't usually do it.

  399. But I can maybe help you

  400. to learn how to pray.

  401. And whether or not

  402. you say that prayer exactly

  403. or just are influenced by it,

  404. you know,

  405. the Gospel of John

  406. is teaching us

  407. to pray a prayer like this.

  408. And for some of us,

  409. a prayer like this

  410. is how we begin

  411. to be the Christian life.

  412. And for others of us,

  413. it's just how we live

  414. the Christian life

  415. and grow the Christian life.

  416. And so the Bible here

  417. is encouraging us

  418. to say to God

  419. as we hear about Jesus

  420. to turn to the Father

  421. and to cry out

  422. and say,

  423. Dear God,

  424. please grow in me

  425. a humble,

  426. trusting,

  427. walking,

  428. knowing

  429. of the greatness,

  430. glory,

  431. and grace

  432. of Jesus Messiah.

  433. You might notice

  434. I put that odd idea

  435. of walking in there.

  436. and that's because

  437. ultimately

  438. to know Jesus

  439. is to change

  440. the way we live.

  441. We don't change

  442. the way we live

  443. so that Jesus

  444. will pay attention to us

  445. and think that we have

  446. an exemplary life.

  447. That doesn't work.

  448. We're going to see that.

  449. But when you come,

  450. the Bible wants us

  451. to walk with Jesus.

  452. It's an image

  453. of how we do our day.

  454. You know,

  455. you get out of bed,

  456. your feet go on the floor.

  457. You know,

  458. if you're like me,

  459. you go to the bathroom,

  460. then you immediately

  461. go to the kettle,

  462. plug the kettle in

  463. because I'm going to

  464. make a cup of coffee,

  465. go to the toaster,

  466. put the toast bread in

  467. for toast,

  468. go to the fridge

  469. for my yogurt,

  470. and the day proceeds

  471. until at the very,

  472. very end of the day

  473. I take my weary feet

  474. off the floor

  475. as I lay down in bed

  476. and I sleep

  477. and the next morning

  478. I get up,

  479. I walk through my day

  480. and that's what

  481. we want to do.

  482. We want to learn.

  483. We want to learn

  484. by God's grace

  485. to walk with Jesus.

  486. That whether we are

  487. dealing with problems

  488. in our body,

  489. problems in our marriage,

  490. problems in our family,

  491. problems with our kids,

  492. problems with boss,

  493. problems with finances,

  494. any type of problems

  495. or opportunities

  496. and great adventures,

  497. round the world tours,

  498. spectacular promotions,

  499. whatever it is

  500. that we are to pray,

  501. dear God,

  502. please grow in me,

  503. please grow in me today

  504. and every day

  505. a humble, trusting,

  506. walking,

  507. knowing

  508. of the greatness,

  509. glory,

  510. and grace

  511. of Jesus Messiah.

  512. As we deal

  513. with all of these things,

  514. the birth of a child,

  515. the death of a loved one,

  516. that we walk

  517. with Jesus,

  518. knowing Jesus

  519. and walking

  520. and knowing

  521. and humbly trusting

  522. his greatness,

  523. his glory

  524. and his grace

  525. and Jesus Messiah.

  526. and so if you have

  527. an IQ through the roof

  528. and a disciplined mind,

  529. you can meditate

  530. and dwell

  531. and think upon

  532. to great heights

  533. the mystery

  534. of God,

  535. the son of God,

  536. setting the big bang

  537. in motion

  538. and yet

  539. taking on flesh

  540. and walking amongst us

  541. and maybe some of us,

  542. our IQ

  543. is south of a hundred

  544. and our attention span

  545. is like a hummingbird

  546. and meditation

  547. is probably never

  548. going to be our thing.

  549. It's probably never

  550. going to be our thing

  551. but we can pray

  552. that we have

  553. a humble,

  554. trusting,

  555. walking,

  556. knowing

  557. of the greatness,

  558. glory,

  559. and grace

  560. of Jesus Messiah

  561. and that's what we can pray.

  562. So some of you might say,

  563. okay, George,

  564. this sounds really great

  565. but you know,

  566. so he comes

  567. and he's great like this

  568. but George,

  569. the fact of the matter

  570. is that there are

  571. so many Christians

  572. that I meet

  573. that they just look like

  574. they wake up in the morning

  575. and they suck a lemon

  576. and all day long

  577. they suck lemons

  578. and they are just,

  579. they're like that

  580. Peanuts character

  581. that walks around

  582. with a cloud

  583. over their head

  584. and it's pouring rain.

  585. I'm reading a novel

  586. right now

  587. by a fellow

  588. from Mississippi

  589. and the novel

  590. is set

  591. in northern Mississippi

  592. to Pilo

  593. or something,

  594. I don't know,

  595. I can't probably pronounce

  596. with a Mississippi drawl

  597. that I can't master.

  598. Anyway,

  599. and one of the characters,

  600. her father's

  601. an evangelical pastor

  602. and her comment

  603. about part of it

  604. is her dealing

  605. with her father

  606. and her father,

  607. you know,

  608. he just sucks

  609. the joy out of life.

  610. He's a negative view

  611. of everybody

  612. that he meets.

  613. He's always looking down

  614. his noses at people

  615. and she comments

  616. that he just,

  617. all he wants to do

  618. is read the Bible

  619. and die

  620. so he can go to heaven

  621. and drink lemonade

  622. and drink lemonade

  623. and square dance.

  624. And until he dies

  625. and can drink lemonade

  626. and square dance

  627. in heaven,

  628. it's just,

  629. everything is just,

  630. you know,

  631. you can't enjoy food,

  632. it's just a completely

  633. unenjoyable life.

  634. And so,

  635. you know,

  636. some of us

  637. at a very,

  638. very deep level

  639. have this fear

  640. that if we get close

  641. to Jesus,

  642. that what's going to

  643. have to happen

  644. is that we,

  645. you know,

  646. if I get close to Jesus,

  647. I can't watch football

  648. all Sunday afternoon

  649. because I should be

  650. reading the Bible

  651. and praying

  652. and I should be going

  653. to prayer meetings

  654. and I can't just,

  655. I don't know,

  656. put my feet up

  657. and grab a bowl

  658. of macaroni and cheese

  659. and jalapeno potato chips

  660. and something to drink

  661. and just watch the football game

  662. and enjoy it.

  663. Like,

  664. if I get too close to Jesus,

  665. it's just going to suck

  666. the joy out of life.

  667. And at a deep level,

  668. many of us fear that.

  669. And many in our culture

  670. fear it.

  671. And some of us

  672. give them cause

  673. to fear it.

  674. That that's what's going

  675. to happen

  676. if you give your life

  677. to Jesus.

  678. That, you know,

  679. you don't have to be

  680. a missionary.

  681. You can just have a job.

  682. Like,

  683. that's fine.

  684. Like,

  685. God can call you to that.

  686. In fact,

  687. he calls most Christians

  688. to that.

  689. So,

  690. is that what Jesus

  691. is going to do?

  692. What John sort of

  693. deals with this,

  694. he in a sense

  695. deals with our

  696. religious and spiritual

  697. fears.

  698. That what's going to

  699. happen is that

  700. when we read the

  701. Gospels and read

  702. about Jesus,

  703. that what's going to

  704. happen is it's just

  705. going to be Jesus

  706. imposing religion

  707. upon us.

  708. So,

  709. let's go back

  710. and look again.

  711. We'll read verse 15

  712. again and then we'll

  713. read verse 16

  714. where John sort of

  715. addresses this fear

  716. in advance

  717. so that when we read

  718. about Jesus,

  719. every verse that we

  720. read in the rest

  721. of the Gospel of John,

  722. we're to read it

  723. mindful of these

  724. verses.

  725. So,

  726. verse 15 it says,

  727. John bore witness

  728. about him,

  729. Jesus,

  730. crying out

  731. and cried out,

  732. this was he of whom

  733. I said,

  734. he who comes after me

  735. ranks before me

  736. because he was

  737. before me.

  738. And here's the verse,

  739. and from his fullness

  740. we have all received

  741. grace upon grace.

  742. That's a verse

  743. worth memorizing.

  744. It's a verse

  745. worth memorizing.

  746. And from his fullness

  747. we have all received

  748. grace upon grace.

  749. There's two senses

  750. to this

  751. and the first part

  752. I'm going to talk about

  753. and then the second part

  754. sort of leads into

  755. verse 17,

  756. the second sense.

  757. And this is what

  758. the text is saying.

  759. Excuse me.

  760. Jesus,

  761. out of his fullness,

  762. gives never-ending,

  763. ever-deepening,

  764. pure grace.

  765. grace.

  766. Jesus,

  767. out of his fullness,

  768. gives never-ending,

  769. ever-deepening,

  770. pure grace.

  771. That's an image

  772. that those of you

  773. who are a little bit

  774. familiar with the

  775. writings of C.S. Lewis,

  776. you can see that this

  777. is where C.S. Lewis,

  778. he sort of starts at it

  779. from a literary way,

  780. but it's actually a deeply

  781. embedded idea

  782. in the scriptures.

  783. That it's as if

  784. when you actually start

  785. to taste a little bit

  786. of God's grace,

  787. the grace that comes

  788. from Jesus.

  789. And grace means

  790. God's unmerited favor.

  791. It means his kindly affection.

  792. It means an ability

  793. and power for you

  794. to thrive.

  795. And when you start

  796. to taste a bit

  797. of the goodness

  798. and beauty

  799. and holiness

  800. and love

  801. and mercy

  802. and intimacy

  803. that's completely

  804. offered to us

  805. by God,

  806. that's unmerited,

  807. that as we start

  808. to taste a tiny bit

  809. of that,

  810. two different things

  811. happen.

  812. One is,

  813. it's profoundly satisfying.

  814. And at the same time

  815. within us,

  816. there's a type of

  817. dissatisfaction

  818. and hunger for more.

  819. And even the hunger

  820. of more,

  821. for more,

  822. is a pleasure.

  823. And then,

  824. as you drink more

  825. of the grace of Jesus

  826. and of our loving

  827. Heavenly Father,

  828. it's both satisfying

  829. and creates a desire

  830. for more,

  831. which in and of itself

  832. is a pleasurable desire

  833. and there's more.

  834. That the grace

  835. that is offered

  836. by Jesus

  837. is a grace

  838. that is never-ending.

  839. It's a never-ending grace.

  840. And it's an ever-deepening

  841. grace.

  842. And it's always pure grace.

  843. And it's going to talk

  844. to us in the Gospels

  845. as John is going to

  846. tell us later on

  847. that the story

  848. of Jesus

  849. and the whole story

  850. of Jesus

  851. is to move forward

  852. to his death

  853. upon the cross.

  854. Eventually,

  855. or those of you

  856. who were here

  857. on Christmas morning

  858. and I talked about

  859. the word became flesh

  860. and dwelt among us

  861. full of grace and truth.

  862. And we have seen

  863. his glory.

  864. Glory is the only

  865. Son of the Father.

  866. And if you follow

  867. the idea

  868. through the Gospel,

  869. the time that Jesus

  870. says that you're now

  871. going to see

  872. the glory of God,

  873. in chapter 13

  874. and John 17,

  875. Jesus says

  876. you're now going to see

  877. God's glory

  878. in its fullness.

  879. And he's talking

  880. about his death

  881. upon the cross.

  882. That in Jesus'

  883. death upon the cross,

  884. the full glory

  885. of God

  886. is revealed.

  887. And it's a glory

  888. that is revealed

  889. that the perfect,

  890. holy,

  891. just,

  892. loving,

  893. true God

  894. bears in himself

  895. and the person

  896. of his Son

  897. in himself

  898. that which we

  899. cannot fix

  900. and deal with,

  901. our darkness,

  902. our rebellion,

  903. our sin,

  904. our shame,

  905. our separation

  906. from God,

  907. every single thing

  908. within us

  909. that is in rebellion

  910. against God

  911. and keeps us

  912. from him.

  913. God,

  914. who sees

  915. that we cannot

  916. deal with that,

  917. he crosses

  918. the infinite distance

  919. from himself

  920. and his holiness

  921. to us

  922. in the person

  923. of his Son.

  924. And Jesus

  925. bears in himself

  926. and upon himself

  927. all of the darkness

  928. and sin

  929. of every human being

  930. without exception.

  931. It's done for us.

  932. We have to receive it.

  933. And it's an act

  934. of grace.

  935. It's an act

  936. of unmerited

  937. love

  938. by Jesus

  939. for you and me.

  940. And he bears it

  941. for us.

  942. He tastes it

  943. for us.

  944. He takes its punishment

  945. and all the consequences

  946. for it

  947. and he dies

  948. upon the cross

  949. so that we

  950. come to Jesus

  951. for asking

  952. that the God

  953. would grow within us

  954. a humble, trusting,

  955. walking knowledge

  956. of the greatness,

  957. glory, and grace

  958. of Jesus Messiah.

  959. And if you're at all

  960. like me,

  961. when I gave my life

  962. to Jesus,

  963. it was just a sense

  964. that I needed more.

  965. That there was

  966. a hollowness

  967. and a hole

  968. within me

  969. and I didn't

  970. understand anything

  971. about,

  972. I didn't really

  973. understand about

  974. the cross

  975. and I didn't really

  976. understand all about

  977. what Jesus had done

  978. for me.

  979. All I had

  980. was a sense

  981. that if I was

  982. to come to Jesus,

  983. I was coming

  984. to light

  985. and life

  986. and grace

  987. and that's all

  988. I understood.

  989. And then you

  990. come to Jesus

  991. and the knowledge

  992. of his greatness

  993. and glory

  994. and what he accomplishes

  995. for you on the cross,

  996. there's this opportunity

  997. for it to grow

  998. and the more

  999. it grows,

  1000. the more we can

  1001. be gripped

  1002. by the gospel

  1003. and what Jesus

  1004. has done for us.

  1005. Followers of Jesus

  1006. gripped by the gospel

  1007. and so able

  1008. to start to live

  1009. for his glory.

  1010. And John says

  1011. that as you're

  1012. going to hear Jesus,

  1013. you're going to hear

  1014. Jesus have conflicts

  1015. with religious people,

  1016. he's going to have

  1017. conflicts with

  1018. spiritual people,

  1019. there's going to be

  1020. this terrible thing

  1021. that takes several

  1022. chapters at the end

  1023. where he's accused

  1024. of terrible things

  1025. and people come up

1026. and say lies about him

1027. and all of his friends

  1028. leave him alone

  1029. and he dies

  1030. upon the cross

  1031. and he dies

  1032. and you're going to

  1033. hear all about this

  1034. but what you have

  1035. to understand

  1036. is it's all grace

  1037. that it's grace

  1038. upon grace

  1039. upon grace

1040. that out of his fullness

1041. he's going to offer this

  1042. and he offers

  1043. on the cross

  1044. and when we come

  1045. to Jesus

1046. not only is it grace

  1047. that makes us

  1048. the child of God

  1049. by adoption

1050. when we put our faith

  1051. and trust in him

  1052. but becoming more

  1053. like Jesus

  1054. learning to obey him

  1055. and walk with him

  1056. that we are dependent

  1057. upon God's grace

  1058. and when finally

  1059. Jesus returns

  1060. or we die

  1061. and we see Jesus

  1062. face to face

1063. and then the new heaven

  1064. and the new earth

  1065. comes

1066. and we have glorified bodies

  1067. that's grace as well

1068. and what will we taste

  1069. in all of eternity

  1070. in the new heaven

  1071. and the new earth

  1072. grace upon grace

1073. and then we will know

  1074. in fullness

  1075. here on this side

  1076. of the grave

  1077. we taste God's grace

  1078. but there's idols

  1079. in our heart

  1080. and there's rebellion

  1081. in our heart

  1082. and we're afraid

  1083. of God

1084. and we want to try

  1085. to cover ourselves

  1086. with fig trees

  1087. and we don't always

  1088. taste that

  1089. go from grace

  1090. to a hunger

  1091. for grace

  1092. and it's

  1093. you know

  1094. even when we're redeemed

1095. and even when we're adopted

  1096. and God's child

  1097. there's still that struggle

  1098. within us

  1099. and whatever type

  1100. of victory we have

  1101. still is due

  1102. to the grace

  1103. that comes from Jesus

  1104. but one day

  1105. we will know

  1106. face to face

  1107. and for all eternity

  1108. we will drink

  1109. of the grace

  1110. and favor

  1111. of almighty God

  1112. the living God

  1113. and his son Jesus

  1114. and the Holy Spirit

  1115. and every drink

  1116. of that grace

  1117. and unmerited favor

  1118. and love

  1119. and intimacy

  1120. and power

  1121. and goodness

  1122. that comes from God

  1123. will both satisfy

  1124. our souls

  1125. and create within us

  1126. a longing

  1127. and a yearning

  1128. for more

1129. which in and of itself

  1130. is a great pleasure

  1131. and as we yearn

1132. for more of God's grace

  1133. in the new heaven

  1134. and the new earth

  1135. so we will receive

1136. and so we will be satisfied

1137. and so we will be thirsty

1138. and there is a grace

  1139. upon grace

1140. that is promised to us

1141. that if we were to even know it

  1142. in the tiniest bit

  1143. now would unmake us

  1144. and John says

1145. this is who you're going to meet

  1146. in the pages

1147. of the gospel of John

  1148. out of his fullness

  1149. his never ending

  1150. eternal

  1151. outside of time

  1152. abundance

  1153. one who will give

  1154. grace upon grace

  1155. and you becoming

  1156. God's child

  1157. that's grace

1158. you becoming more like Jesus

  1159. that will be grace

  1160. your final glorification

  1161. that will be grace

  1162. it's always grace

1163. Andrew if you could put up

  1164. the prayer game

1165. you see this is why

  1166. John is encouraging us

1167. the Bible is moving us

  1168. to pray

  1169. dear God

  1170. please grow in me

  1171. a humble

  1172. trusting

  1173. walking

  1174. knowing

  1175. of the greatness

  1176. glory

  1177. and grace

  1178. of Jesus

  1179. Messiah

  1180. that's what the Bible

  1181. is leading us

  1182. to talk about

  1183. there's a fellow

  1184. that I talk to

  1185. regularly

  1186. in Starbucks

  1187. he's sort of

  1188. an odd mixture

  1189. I can never tell

  1190. if he's an atheist

  1191. I actually think

  1192. he's an atheist

  1193. who's also

  1194. spiritual

  1195. not religious

  1196. and

  1197. I think

  1198. that's a great

  1199. contradiction

  1200. and I occasionally

1201. try to talk to him

  1202. about how I think

  1203. that's a great

  1204. contradiction

  1205. but he both

  1206. sort of believes

  1207. that no God exists

1208. but on the other hand

1209. that we have to be

  1210. spiritual not religious

  1211. and

  1212. you know

  1213. he makes all these

  1214. claims about Jesus

1215. but a week or two ago

  1216. I come into a Starbucks

1217. and he beckons me over

  1218. I take my cord

  1219. he beckons me over

1220. he has a loud voice

  1221. it's a small Starbucks

  1222. and he said

  1223. George

  1224. I just had somebody

  1225. read me a part

  1226. of the Bible

  1227. and

  1228. it's a story

  1229. about

  1230. people getting

  1231. these things

  1232. called minas

1233. and at the end of it

  1234. people

  1235. don't want to

  1236. receive the king

1237. and so he tells him

  1238. to kill

  1239. Jesus

  1240. says in this story

  1241. to kill the people

  1242. who don't want me

  1243. to be king

  1244. how could Jesus

  1245. say stuff like that

  1246. how could you

  1247. follow somebody

  1248. like that

  1249. and he goes on

  1250. what can you say

  1251. about it

1252. and I start to say

  1253. a few things

  1254. he said what

  1255. and then he goes

1256. on and on and on

  1257. with a loud voice

  1258. and I'm trying

  1259. not to be read

  1260. you know

  1261. because you don't

  1262. really want to

  1263. have a discussion

  1264. about judgment

  1265. and hell

  1266. and a loud voice

  1267. in a Starbucks

  1268. in Ottawa

  1269. in 2014

  1270. with who knows

  1271. what people

  1272. are thinking

  1273. and so partly

  1274. and he finally

  1275. says

  1276. you can say

  1277. nothing

  1278. you're speechless

1279. and I say to him

  1280. no I can say

  1281. something

  1282. you just won't

  1283. stop talking

  1284. and then it was

  1285. so funny

  1286. he burst out

  1287. laughing

  1288. and said

  1289. put up his hand

  1290. like that

1291. to give me a high five

  1292. he just was trying

  1293. to embarrass me

  1294. which you know

  1295. and he said

  1296. go get your coffee

  1297. you know

  1298. and then we talked

  1299. a little bit

  1300. about the text

  1301. and you know

  1302. all of that

  1303. type of stuff

  1304. at least

  1305. I don't know

  1306. where he's going

  1307. to end up

  1308. in all this

  1309. but at least

  1310. there's

  1311. you know

  1312. when you meet

  1313. him

  1314. there's

  1315. energy

  1316. right

  1317. like he's

  1318. he's

  1319. he's motivated

  1320. by this

  1321. by this

  1322. type of stuff

  1323. so

  1324. you know

  1325. here's the thing

  1326. he is right

  1327. on one hand

  1328. some of you

  1329. might say

  1330. George

  1331. I know you

  1332. just within

  1333. the last year

  1334. or so

  1335. you've preached

  1336. a sermon

  1337. on hell

  1338. and I know

  1339. you talk

  1340. about judgment

  1341. and Jesus

  1342. talks about

  1343. those things

  1344. so how does

  1345. grace upon

  1346. grace

  1347. fit with

  1348. all that

  1349. is it

  1350. or sort of

  1351. George

  1352. is it

  1353. sort of

  1354. one of those

  1355. things

  1356. that

  1357. you know

  1358. maybe you're

  1359. going to repent

  1360. of what you've

  1361. preached

  1362. and like

  1363. hell and all

  1364. is that

  1365. like Old Testament

  1366. type of stuff

  1367. and Jesus

  1368. is going to

  1369. tell us

  1370. just about

  1371. great

  1372. like what's

  1373. going on

  1374. George

  1375. well let's

  1376. go back

  1377. and see

  1378. because John

  1379. actually sets

  1380. the stage

  1381. to help us

  1382. to understand

  1383. that

  1384. let's go

  1385. back

  1386. well read

  1387. verse 15

  1388. 16

  1389. it's in

  1390. verse 17

  1391. that he talks

  1392. about it

  1393. read verse 15

  1394. again

  1395. John bore witness

  1396. about him

  1397. that's Jesus

  1398. and cried out

  1399. this was he

  1400. of whom I said

  1401. he who comes

  1402. after me

  1403. ranks before me

  1404. because he was

  1405. before me

  1406. and from his

  1407. fullness

  1408. we have all

  1409. received grace

  1410. upon grace

  1411. for the law

  1412. was given

  1413. through Moses

  1414. grace and truth

  1415. came through

  1416. Jesus Christ

  1417. and at first glance

  1418. it looks like

  1419. in fact

  1420. sort of what

  1421. my friend was

  1422. saying was

  1423. sort of there

  1424. okay oh yeah

  1425. oh yeah

  1426. yeah there's the

  1427. Moses and all that

  1428. ten commandment

  1429. you know

  1430. yucky stuff

  1431. and then there's

  1432. grace

  1433. and in fact

  1434. my friend says

  1435. that he actually

  1436. thinks that I'm

  1437. not religious

  1438. he thinks I'm

  1439. spiritual

  1440. not religious

  1441. but promise

  1442. I still believe

  1443. in God

  1444. and the Bible

  1445. but

  1446. and so is that

  1447. what

  1448. is that what

  1449. the Bible

  1450. is saying here

  1451. that there's

  1452. this Moses

  1453. stuff that's

  1454. not grace

  1455. well remember

  1456. I said that

  1457. there's two

  1458. senses of

  1459. grace

  1460. upon grace

  1461. and the other

  1462. sense in Greek

  1463. is grace

  1464. following grace

  1465. and

  1466. and you can't

  1467. sort of translate

  1468. upon

  1469. I mean nowadays

  1470. maybe we put

  1471. upon

  1472. slash following

  1473. and it would

  1474. sort of work

  1475. but it's very

  1476. ungrammatic

  1477. if you want

  1478. to read it

  1479. but there's

  1480. the double

  1481. sense there

  1482. that of

  1483. grace

  1484. following grace

  1485. and you might

  1486. notice

  1487. in the text

  1488. that for the

  1489. first time

  1490. in the gospel

  1491. of John

  1492. I've been

  1493. just telling

  1494. you it's

  1495. Jesus

  1496. but

  1497. if you go

  1498. back to read

  1499. from verse

  1500. one

  1501. in the beginning

  1502. was the word

  1503. and the word

  1504. was with God

  1505. and the word

  1506. was God

  1507. he was in the

  1508. beginning

  1509. with God

  1510. all things

  1511. were made

  1512. through him

  1513. and without him

  1514. nothing was made

  1515. that was made

  1516. and the word

  1517. became flesh

  1518. and all of that

  1519. for the first time

  1520. we're told

  1521. that who John

  1522. the Baptist

  1523. is talking

  1524. who John

  1525. the Evangelist

  1526. is talking

  1527. about is Jesus

  1528. and he calls him

  1529. Jesus

  1530. Messiah

  1531. Messiah

  1532. in a few moments

  1533. during the

  1534. we're going to get

  1535. a thank you note

  1536. from our ministry

  1537. in Uganda

  1538. and those Ugandans

  1539. they say Messiah

  1540. in a wonderful way

  1541. I wish I could copy it

1542. and say it the way

  1543. they do

  1544. but he's

  1545. that's the first clue

1546. that so the first thing

  1547. is he can't

  1548. John here isn't saying

  1549. that Jesus is contradicting

  1550. the Old Testament

  1551. because he uses

  1552. when he introduces Jesus

  1553. he uses Messiah

  1554. in a sense

  1555. the long

  1556. that the Old Testament

  1557. is predicting a Messiah

  1558. and Jesus is introduced

  1559. as the Messiah

  1560. and grace follows grace

  1561. here's in fact

1562. Andrew if you could put it up

  1563. here's in fact

  1564. what John is saying

  1565. Jesus does not contradict

  1566. the Old Testament

  1567. Jesus completes

  1568. the Old Testament

  1569. Jesus does not contradict

  1570. the Old Testament

  1571. Jesus completes

  1572. the Old Testament

1573. you see even the Old Testament

  1574. is grace

  1575. one grace

  1576. is that even those

  1577. laws

  1578. even those rules

  1579. you know you shouldn't

  1580. commit adultery

  1581. you shouldn't steal

  1582. you shouldn't bear

  1583. false witness

  1584. you shouldn't have idols

  1585. you shouldn't abuse

  1586. the name of God

  1587. etc. etc.

  1588. on one hand

  1589. it's the grace

  1590. if God in fact

1591. if we have been created

  1592. and God creates us

  1593. it's a grace

  1594. to have the owner

  1595. clarify

  1596. the owner's manual

  1597. for us to live

  1598. on Christmas morning

  1599. after I came back

  1600. from the service

1601. we were going to have

  1602. for a Christmas meal

1603. we were going to have

  1604. turkey and ham

  1605. and so

1606. it was one of those

  1607. spiral

  1608. sort of pre-cooked hams

  1609. that you were

  1610. hooking up

  1611. and so

1612. you know I said to Louise

1613. I said how do you cook this

1614. and we sort of said

1615. why don't we do it this way

  1616. so I said sure

  1617. let's put it in

1618. so I put it in that way

  1619. and then after about

  1620. ten minutes

1621. I thought you know maybe

  1622. I think there's instructions

1623. like maybe I should read

  1624. the instructions

1625. about how to cook this ham

  1626. like they probably know

1627. how to do it right

1628. and I looked it up

  1629. and sure enough

  1630. I would have led

  1631. to a completely dry

  1632. unedible ham

1633. if I had just followed

  1634. my own inklings

1635. and I looked and said

  1636. oh that's what you're

  1637. supposed to do

1638. so you know I put the thing

  1639. a different way

1640. and did a few different things

1641. and even changed the temperature

  1642. and it was delicious

  1643. it was delicious

  1644. and on one hand

1645. if the Old Testament law

1646. is just God giving us

  1647. how to live

  1648. then that's a grace

  1649. actually

  1650. just like it was

  1651. actually good

  1652. that the makers

  1653. the producers

  1654. of the ham

1655. told me how to actually

  1656. cook the ham

1657. so that it would be delicious

  1658. and on one hand

  1659. it's a grace

  1660. if it's just even

  1661. proper instruction manual

  1662. but if you go

1663. actually if you have time

  1664. let's just do it

  1665. look

1666. go to the Ten Commandments

  1667. turn with me

  1668. to Exodus chapter 20

    Exodus 20:1

  1669. verse 1

  1670. Exodus chapter 20

    Exodus 20:1

  1671. verse 1

  1672. it's towards the beginning

  1673. of your Bible

1674. and this is how we have to

  1675. like the Ten Commandments

  1676. are very central

  1677. to the law

  1678. to the Torah

  1679. to the Old Testament

1680. and here's how it begins

  1681. and God spoke

  1682. all these words

  1683. saying

  1684. I am the Lord

  1685. your God

  1686. who brought you

  1687. out of the land

  1688. of Egypt

  1689. out of the house

  1690. of slavery

  1691. you shall have

  1692. no other gods

  1693. before me

1694. now do you notice this

  1695. how does it begin

  1696. with grace

  1697. it begins with God

  1698. identifying himself

  1699. I am the Lord

  1700. your God

  1701. and then it talks

  1702. about what he's

  1703. graciously done

  1704. he is God

  1705. he is

  1706. your God

  1707. I am your God

  1708. I brought you

  1709. out of the land

  1710. of Egypt

  1711. out of the house

  1712. of slavery

  1713. I

  1714. by grace

  1715. delivered you

  1716. how shall you

  1717. then live

  1718. and the encouragement

  1719. is to understand

  1720. that it begins

  1721. with grace

  1722. God

  1723. identifying himself

  1724. in such a way

  1725. that he can be

  1726. our God

  1727. and we can be

  1728. his people

  1729. and that can only

  1730. happen after

  1731. he delivers us

  1732. and then after

  1733. we have received

  1734. his deliverance

  1735. the question

  1736. is asked

  1737. how shall

  1738. I then

  1739. live

  1740. how shall

  1741. we

  1742. then

  1743. live

  1744. and it's not

  1745. just the Exodus

  1746. version

  1747. look at the

  1748. Deuteronomy

  1749. version

  1750. Exodus is the

  1751. beginning of the

  1752. Exodus

  1753. Deuteronomy

  1754. is sort of

  1755. summary of the

  1756. whole thing

  1757. at the end

  1758. it's Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  1759. chapter 5

  1760. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 5:6

  1761. chapter 5

  1762. verse 6

  1763. and you'll see

  1764. that the exact

  1765. same structure

  1766. is kept

  1767. there

  1768. that all

  1769. of those

  1770. do's and

  1771. don'ts

  1772. are to be

  1773. understand

  1774. from the

  1775. perspective

  1776. that God

  1777. desires to

  1778. be our

  1779. God

  1780. he delivers

  1781. us so we

  1782. can be his

  1783. God

  1784. and how

  1785. shall we

  1786. then live

  1787. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 5:6

  1788. chapter 5

  1789. verse 6

  1790. I am the

  1791. Lord your

  1792. God

  1793. who brought

  1794. you out of

  1795. the land

  1796. of Egypt

  1797. out of the

  1798. house of

  1799. slavery

  1800. you shall

  1801. have no

  1802. other gods

  1803. before me

  1804. the Old

  1805. Testament

  1806. is not

  1807. teaching us

  1808. certain ways

  1809. of living

  1810. so that we

  1811. can become

  1812. eligible for

  1813. grace

  1814. it's not

  1815. obey

  1816. and then

  1817. grace

  1818. but receive

  1819. God's grace

  1820. and then

  1821. obedience

  1822. receive God's

  1823. grace

  1824. and then

  1825. obedience

  1826. Jesus does

  1827. not contradict

  1828. the Old

  1829. Testament

  1830. Jesus

  1831. completes

  1832. the Old

  1833. Testament

  1834. there's a

  1835. grace

  1836. in all

  1837. of the

  1838. Old

  1839. Testament

  1840. law

  1841. and as

  1842. we bring

  1843. it into

  1844. ourselves

  1845. as the

  1846. Jewish

  1847. people brought

  1848. it into

  1849. ourselves

  1850. it was to

  1851. prepare us

  1852. to meet

  1853. Jesus

  1854. who is

  1855. grace

  1856. himself

  1857. and truth

  1858. himself

  1859. God

  1860. himself

  1861. light

  1862. himself

  1863. love

  1864. himself

  1865. who comes

  1866. to deliver

  1867. us

  1868. it's

  1869. deeper

  1870. grace

  1871. the Bible's

  1872. teaching

  1873. that's why

  1874. it's all

  1875. leading us

  1876. if you could

  1877. put up the

  1878. prayer again

  1879. Andrew

  1880. dear God

  1881. please grow

  1882. in me

  1883. a humble

  1884. trusting

  1885. walking

  1886. knowing

  1887. of the

  1888. greatness

  1889. glory

  1890. and grace

  1891. of Jesus

  1892. Messiah

  1893. very very

  1894. final thing

  1895. very briefly

  1896. sort of

  1897. running out

  1898. of time

  1899. I don't know

  1900. how many of

  1901. you have

  1902. watched the

  1903. television series

  1904. Broadchurch

  1905. it was a

  1906. huge sensation

  1907. in England

  1908. it's now

  1909. on Netflix

  1910. it's eight

  1911. episodes

  1912. and on

  1913. one hand

  1914. it centers

  1915. around the

  1916. story

  1917. of a

  1918. murder

  1919. of an

  1920. 11 year

  1921. old boy

  1922. in a

  1923. small

  1924. tightly

  1925. knit

  1926. coastal

  1927. community

  1928. in England

  1929. a

  1930. community

  1931. where the

  1932. majority

  1933. of the

  1934. people

  1935. have lived

  1936. there

  1937. for a

  1938. long

  1939. time

  1940. and they

  1941. know

  1942. each

  1943. other

  1944. and they're

  1945. related

  1946. to each

  1947. other

  1948. and the

  1949. question

  1950. really

  1951. which runs

  1952. throughout

  1953. the entire

  1954. movie

  1955. is can

  1956. you ever

  1957. really

  1958. know

  1959. another

  1960. person

  1961. because

  1962. when they

  1963. ask the

  1964. family

  1965. and all

  1966. and others

  1967. well who

  1968. could have

  1969. done this

  1970. murder

  1971. they all

  1972. say well

  1973. nobody

  1974. could have

  1975. done this

  1976. murder

  1977. and so

  1978. one of the

  1979. things that

  1980. they play

  1981. with

  1982. throughout

  1983. things

  1984. as the

  1985. investigation

  1986. goes on

  1987. over the

  1988. eight episodes

  1989. is can

  1990. you ever

  1991. really know

  1992. another

  1993. person

  1994. and it's

  1995. very very

  1996. hard

  1997. and so

  1998. the question

  1999. is can

  2000. we ever

  2001. really know

  2002. God

  2003. and John

  2004. wants to

  2005. make it

  2006. clear to

  2007. us

  2008. that we

  2009. can know

  2010. God

  2011. because God

  2012. desires to

  2013. make himself

  2014. known

  2015. and he

  2016. makes himself

  2017. known

  2018. in the

  2019. person of

  2020. his son

  2021. and there's

  2022. no separation

  2023. between God

  2024. making himself

  2025. known

  2026. and offering

  2027. us grace

  2028. look at

  2029. verse 18

  2030. oops I have

  2031. to turn back

  2032. to it

  2033. John 1

  2034. 18

  2035. no one

  2036. has ever

  2037. seen God

  2038. all mysticism

  2039. is undercut

  2040. right there

  2041. all human

  2042. attempts

  2043. to attain

  2044. to the

  2045. divine

  2046. John

  2047. completely

  2048. rejects

  2049. he's saying

  2050. it's not

  2051. going to be

  2052. about the

  2053. brilliance of

  2054. your ideas

  2055. the brilliance

  2056. of your poetry

  2057. the brilliance

  2058. of your

  2059. spirituality

  2060. the brilliance

  2061. of your

  2062. ethical attainments

  2063. the brilliance

  2064. of your

  2065. it's not going

  2066. to be about

  2067. anything about

  2068. your ability

  2069. to see

  2070. no one

  2071. has ever

  2072. seen God

  2073. but God

  2074. the only God

  2075. who is at

  2076. the Father's

  2077. side

  2078. he has

  2079. made him

  2080. known

  2081. God

  2082. makes himself

  2083. known

  2084. God

  2085. the Son

  2086. of God

  2087. who is at

  2088. the Father's

  2089. side

  2090. he makes

  2091. God

  2092. known

  2093. and in the

  2094. original language

  2095. him known

  2096. is emphatic

  2097. so that if we

  2098. were to in a

  2099. sense be trying

  2100. to write this

  2101. in a way that

  2102. brings out the

  2103. original language

  2104. it would be

  2105. bolded

  2106. and maybe

  2107. underlined

  2108. him known

  2109. and so now

  2110. we're going to

  2111. go into the

  2112. history of

  2113. Jesus

  2114. and the story

  2115. of Jesus

  2116. and everything

  2117. about Jesus

  2118. is all about

  2119. him making

  2120. God known

  2121. and in the

  2122. original language

  2123. it's even more

  2124. dramatic because

  2125. the word which

  2126. is here is

  2127. basically the

  2128. word for

  2129. exegesis

  2130. Andrew if you

  2131. could put the

  2132. point up

  2133. it's in

  2134. basically it's

  2135. saying that

  2136. Jesus of

  2137. Nazareth is

  2138. the exegesis

  2139. of God

  2140. now that's a

  2141. big word

  2142. and many of

  2143. you don't

  2144. know what

  2145. it means

  2146. and it's a

  2147. very old

  2148. fashioned word

  2149. I have a

  2150. feeling that

  2151. it would be

  2152. frowned upon

  2153. in the

  2154. English faculty

  2155. of the

  2156. University of

  2157. Ottawa

  2158. but maybe

  2159. I'm wrong

  2160. about that

  2161. and exegesis

  2162. is this idea

  2163. that all you

  2164. want to do

  2165. it's an

  2166. attempt to

  2167. be a

  2168. disciplined

  2169. understanding

  2170. of a

  2171. text

  2172. it's in a

  2173. sense an

  2174. invitation to

  2175. on one

  2176. hand set

  2177. aside your

  2178. cultural

  2179. presupposition

  2180. set aside

  2181. what you

  2182. think the

  2183. text says

  2184. set aside

  2185. what you

  2186. want it

  2187. to say

  2188. set aside

  2189. your

  2190. preferences

  2191. for what

  2192. it should

  2193. say

  2194. and simply

  2195. try to

  2196. hear and

  2197. understand

  2198. truly what

  2199. the text

  2200. says

  2201. and it's

  2202. saying that

  2203. Jesus is

  2204. the one who

  2205. simply truly

  2206. makes God

  2207. known and

  2208. who he is

  2209. and God

  2210. himself does

  2211. this because

  2212. only God

  2213. can make

  2214. himself known

  2215. because

  2216. otherwise how

  2217. could the

  2218. finite know

  2219. the infinite

  2220. there is

  2221. more in

  2222. common between

  2223. me

  2224. and the

  2225. wood in

  2226. this cross

  2227. there is

  2228. more on

  2229. one level

  2230. in common

  2231. between me

  2232. and the

  2233. wood in

  2234. this cross

  2235. we're both

  2236. created

  2237. we're both

  2238. finite

  2239. we both

  2240. have an

  2241. environment

  2242. we have a

  2243. beginning

  2244. we have an

  2245. end

  2246. we have

  2247. edges

  2248. and there is

  2249. more in

  2250. common between

  2251. me and the

  2252. wood that

  2253. makes up

  2254. this cross

  2255. and there

  2256. is between

  2257. the infinite

  2258. God

  2259. uncreated

  2260. no environment

  2261. no needs

  2262. outside of

  2263. time

  2264. seeing and

  2265. knowing all

  2266. things and

  2267. having all

  2268. power

  2269. above and

  2270. beyond

  2271. and

  2272. intellectually

  2273. it makes no

  2274. sense that the

  2275. finite by our

  2276. sight and our

  2277. effort can ever

  2278. make the

  2279. infinite known

  2280. we are

  2281. completely and

  2282. utterly dependent

  2283. upon the

  2284. infinite

  2285. speaking

  2286. itself

  2287. himself

  2288. and John

  2289. is saying

  2290. that when we

  2291. read the

  2292. gospel we

  2293. see and

  2294. hear the

  2295. infinite having

  2296. taken on

  2297. flesh to

  2298. speak to us

  2299. who are

  2300. finite

  2301. and it's the

  2302. infinite that

  2303. speaks to us

  2304. and we

  2305. are to learn

  2306. to humbly

  2307. trusting

  2308. walkingly

  2309. knowingly

  2310. listen to

  2311. the text

  2312. and listen

  2313. to Jesus

  2314. and watch

  2315. Jesus

  2316. and be

  2317. willing to

  2318. set aside

  2319. our cultural

  2320. assumptions

  2321. and what we

  2322. wish it says

  2323. and what we

  2324. don't say

  2325. and read it

  2326. and listen

  2327. to know

  2328. that this

  2329. is the

  2330. one that

  2331. makes the

  2332. infinite

  2333. God

  2334. known

  2335. and he

  2336. is good

  2337. we can

  2338. trust him

  2339. I invite you

  2340. to stand

  2341. what is it

  2342. that John

  2343. wants us

  2344. to know

  2345. he

  2346. exegetes

  2347. the

  2348. infinite

  2349. and it's

  2350. all

  2351. grace

  2352. it's

  2353. all

  2354. grace

  2355. and so

  2356. John

  2357. writes this

  2358. hoping

  2359. if you go

  2360. back and

  2361. you read

  2362. the end

  2363. all the

  2364. gospel of

  2365. John you

  2366. come to

  2367. the end

  2368. and you

  2369. see that

  2370. it's

  2371. very clear

  2372. that John's

  2373. hope is that

  2374. by the time

  2375. you finish

  2376. reading his

  2377. gospel that

  2378. you will

  2379. come to

  2380. a humble

  2381. trusting

  2382. knowledge of

  2383. the greatness

  2384. and glory

  2385. of Jesus

  2386. that you

  2387. will know

  2388. him as

  2389. your savior

  2390. and that

  2391. by knowing

  2392. him as

  2393. your savior

  2394. you will

  2395. begin to

  2396. follow him

  2397. as Lord

  2398. and it's

  2399. the cry

  2400. of John's

  2401. heart

  2402. and we

  2403. as Christians

  2404. believe that

  2405. ultimately

  2406. God is

  2407. the one

  2408. who caused

  2409. the gospel

  2410. of John

  2411. to be

  2412. written

  2413. and so

  2414. it is

  2415. the cry

  2416. of God's

  2417. heart

  2418. that our

  2419. eyes would

  2420. be turned

  2421. to Jesus

  2422. and that

  2423. as we

  2424. look at

  2425. Jesus

  2426. we would

  2427. cry out

  2428. to God

  2429. and say

  2430. dear God

  2431. please grow

  2432. in me

  2433. a humble

  2434. trusting

  2435. walking

  2436. knowing

  2437. of the

  2438. greatness

  2439. glory

  2440. and grace

  2441. of Jesus

  2442. Messiah

  2443. those

  2444. that God

  2445. has put it

  2446. on your

  2447. heart

  2448. will have

  2449. just a

  2450. moment

  2451. of silence

  2452. and then

  2453. why don't

  2454. you pray

  2455. this prayer

  2456. with me

  2457. I think

  2458. it's up

  2459. at the

  2460. front

  2461. and then

  2462. I'll

  2463. just have

  2464. a closing

  2465. prayer

  2466. just stand

  2467. those

  2468. whom the

  2469. Holy Spirit

  2470. leads

  2471. join with

  2472. me in

  2473. praying

  2474. dear God

  2475. please

  2476. grow

  2477. in me

  2478. a humble

  2479. trusting

  2480. walking

  2481. knowing

  2482. of the

  2483. greatness

  2484. glory

  2485. and grace

  2486. of Jesus

  2487. Messiah

  2488. Father

  2489. pour out

  2490. your Holy

  2491. Spirit

  2492. upon us

  2493. bring

  2494. if there

  2495. are any

  2496. here

  2497. who have

  2498. not

  2499. come

  2500. to a

  2501. saving

  2502. faith

  2503. in Jesus

  2504. Father

  2505. as they

  2506. pray

  2507. that

  2508. prayer

  2509. may

  2510. it

  2511. be

  2512. a

  2513. moment

  2514. of

  2515. saving

  2516. faith

  2517. for

  2518. them

  2519. in

  2520. Jesus

  2521. and

  2522. Father

  2523. both

  2524. for

  2525. them

  2526. and

  2527. for

  2528. us

  2529. may

  2530. you

  2531. teach

  2532. us

  2533. to pray

  2534. whether

  2535. in these

  2536. words

  2537. or not

  2538. Father

  2539. but may

  2540. that

  2541. be

  2542. increasingly

  2543. the cry

  2544. of our

  2545. hearts

  2546. that we

  2547. would cry

  2548. out to

  2549. you

  2550. whether

  2551. in good

  2552. times

  2553. or bad

  2554. when we're

  2555. depressed

  2556. or lonely

  2557. or feeling

  2558. very excited

  2559. and with a

  2560. lot of

  2561. people

  2562. that the

  2563. cry of

  2564. our

  2565. heart

  2566. would be

  2567. that you

  2568. would grow

  2569. within us

  2570. a

  2571. humble

  2572. trusting

  2573. walking

  2574. knowing

  2575. of the

  2576. greatness

  2577. and the

  2578. glory

  2579. and the

  2580. grace

  2581. of

  2582. Jesus

  2583. Messiah

  2584. Father

  2585. this we

  2586. ask

  2587. we ask

  2588. that your

  2589. Holy Spirit

  2590. would bring

  2591. this home

  2592. to us

  2593. and grow

  2594. that within

  2595. us

  2596. and all

  2597. this we

  2598. ask in

  2599. the name

  2600. of Jesus

  2601. your son

  2602. and our

  2603. savior

  2604. amen
