  1. A great section dealing with how God comforts us, how God comforts his people.

  2. Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.

  3. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed,

  4. that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins.

  5. A voice of one calling in the desert, prepare the way for the Lord, make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.

  6. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low.

  7. The rough ground shall become level, the rugged places are plain, and the glory of the Lord will be revealed,

  8. and all mankind together will see it, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

  9. A voice says, cry out, and I said, what shall I cry?

  10. All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field.

  11. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them.

  12. Surely the people are grass, the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.

  13. You who bring good tidings to Zion, go up on a high mountain.

  14. You who bring good tidings to Jerusalem, lift up your voice with a shout.

  15. Lift it up, lift it up, do not be afraid.

  16. Say to the towns of Judah, here is your God.

  17. See, the sovereign Lord comes with power, and his arm rules for him.

  18. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.

  19. He tends his flock like a shepherd.

  20. He gathers the lambs in his arms, and carries them close to his heart.

  21. He gently leads those that have young.

  22. Okay, we are thinking about preparing and waiting.

  23. Preparing for the king of grace.

  24. But waiting is very much a feature of this time of year, isn't it?

  25. Waiting for the holidays to come.

  26. It always feels like a really long term.

  27. If you are unfortunate enough to leave your Christmas shopping till late,

  28. you will find yourself waiting for a long time in car park queues, and then in shop queues.

  29. It's a time of waiting for family and friends to gather together for joy and celebration.

  30. It's a time of waiting for nativity and carols by candlelight.

  31. Anticipation and waiting can be a wonderful thing.

  32. You know, when we talk with our kids about Christmas, I still remember my own excitement.

  33. Come Christmas Eve as a kid, waiting for watch night services.

  34. We always got to open a present early on Christmas Eve.

  35. We always got to watch a Christmas movie.

  36. The anticipation of Christmas is a really wonderful thing.

  37. But anticipation and waiting can be a dreadful thing too, can't it?

  38. When time stops, when our thoughts are consumed by that thing that lurks on the horizon,

  39. that bad news perhaps, that difficulty in our relationship and the conversation

  40. that we know we're going to need to have.

  41. How we wait very much depends on what we're waiting for.

  42. If you were to read the whole of Isaiah, in a sense you see that it's a prophecy

  43. all about two different kinds of waiting.

  44. Because for God's people Israel, all the way through this prophecy,

  45. there is the warning and the stark reality that God's people were to go into exile.

  46. They were about to face punishment from the Lord.

  47. But that wasn't the only kind of waiting they were invited to.

  48. They were also told that God would be faithful.

  49. That he would return to them and show them grace and bring them back from exile.

  50. And so they were to wait also with hope and expectation.

  51. And as we see, as we read through Isaiah, we've been thinking about it in the morning

  52. and in the evening, there is this promise that ties in with the coming of Jesus.

  53. So 700 years before Jesus came, Isaiah, God through Isaiah, was promising hope.

  54. Because Jesus, the King of Grace, was coming.

  55. But what was true for Israel and what's true for us as well is that only God could transform their waiting.

  56. Only God could allow them to anticipate their future with hope instead of fear because of judgment.

  57. And this, in a sense, takes us to the heart of the gospel.

  58. And when we think about what's the story of the Bible,

  59. we find there is God and God is our creator.

  60. And God is to be our Lord and our King.

  61. But we find from the very first human beings till ourselves,

  62. we are disloyal rebels.

  63. We are seeking revolution.

  64. We would love to, by ourselves, overthrow God's rights to be King.

  65. In all of our hearts, there is that inclination, no King but me, no law but my law.

  66. And because that's true, because that sin is at root in our hearts,

  67. what should we be waiting for from God?

  68. We should be waiting for his just judgment to fall, just like the people.

  69. We should be waiting for God's judgment, the wages of sin, which are death.

  70. Yet, because all of us, by nature, because of our actions, because of our sin nature,

  71. we are guilty before God.

  72. But the hope of Christmas is this,

  73. that we are invited, because of Jesus, to wait with hope.

  74. Because God, in his grace, sends Jesus as a gift of his love.

  75. Jesus takes our place, becomes our substitute,

  76. dies as if he were the worst of rebels.

  77. Jesus dies taking the sin of his people,

  78. with the result that, by God's grace,

  79. and through faith and trust in the Lord Jesus,

  80. people like us can be forgiven.

  81. People like us can be called children of God.

  82. People like us can now wait for the future,

  83. anticipating glory,

  84. instead of destruction.

  85. So we're thinking about waiting.

  86. Waiting for the promised king.

  87. Let's think together about the message,

  88. the message of comfort.

  89. And where does that comfort come?

  90. You know, verse 1,

  91. comfort my people,

  92. says your God.

  93. That comfort comes from the fact that there is promised grace beyond judgment.

  94. This text has a context.

  95. In Isaiah chapter 39,

    Isaiah 39 chapter mention

  96. and at verse 5 through 7,

  97. we get the most clear announcement yet,

  98. in the book,

  99. of judgment to come.

  100. So let's read that together.

  101. Isaiah 39 at verse 5,

  102. Isaiah said to Hezekiah,

  103. he's the king,

  104. hear the word of the Lord Almighty.

  105. The time will surely come when everything in your palace

  106. and all that your fathers have stored up until this day

  107. will be carried off to Babylon.

  108. Nothing will be left,

  109. says the Lord.

  110. And some of your own descendants,

  111. your own flesh and blood,

  112. who will be born to you,

  113. will be taken away,

  114. and they will become eunuchs

  115. in the palace of the king of Babylon.

  116. Judgment is coming in the form of exile.

  117. They're going to be taken away as prisoners to Babylon.

  118. For what?

  119. You read the book of Isaiah,

  120. and you find they were trusting in foreign kings

  121. for their security rather than trusting in God.

  122. You find a catalogue of abuse and injustice

  123. towards the poor and the needy.

  124. You find them polluting pure worship,

  125. engaging in idolatry,

  126. engaging in wild living.

  127. Basically, the judgment was coming

  128. because while they'd been called to be a holy people

  129. and to be a kingdom of priests

  130. and to be a light to the nations,

  131. they were absolutely failing in those roles.

  132. They were in covenant with God.

  133. And under the terms of the covenant,

  134. there was blessings when God's people

  135. walked in obedience to him,

  136. but there would be curse

  137. when they walked in disobedience.

  138. And so the tone largely of the first 39 chapters of Isaiah

  139. is when it's speaking to Israel directly,

  140. it's to say,

  141. you've been unfaithful,

  142. yet God says,

  143. I will remain faithful.

  144. A remnant will be saved,

  145. not because you deserve it,

  146. but because of my grace.

  147. It's that same theme that Jesus picks up.

  148. We were reading in family worship this morning,

  149. the story of the prodigal son.

  150. You know, that younger son

  151. who wanted nothing to do with his dad,

  152. who took his dad's money

  153. and wasted it on wild living.

  154. Going back home,

  155. not sure what he was going to receive.

  156. And he got back,

  157. would he be welcomed?

  158. He didn't really expect so.

  159. But his dad,

  160. full of grace and love,

  161. ran to him and welcomed him

  162. and through a feast

  163. and a celebration for him.

  164. And this is the hope

  165. for Old Testament Israel.

  166. This is the hope for us today

  167. that there is the promise in Jesus

  168. of grace beyond judgment.

  169. Isaiah chapter 40,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  170. it begins a new section in the book

  171. going all the way through to chapter 55.

  172. And the theme is that of comfort

  173. and hope and God's gracious provision.

  174. So to a people about to go into exile,

  175. waiting for that,

  176. they're also able to wait with hope.

  177. Here is their motivation

  178. for them to trust God

  179. as they face exile.

  180. Here is their one source of hope

  181. as their world is about to be turned upside down.

  182. Their hope is in God and his grace.

  183. Verse one,

  184. who is God speaking to there

  185. when he says,

  186. comfort, comfort my people,

  187. says your God.

  188. He's speaking to three voices

  189. or three messengers.

  190. Roddy, they read them for us.

  191. So you see in verse three,

  192. this is the one we're going to focus on,

  193. a voice of one calling.

  194. And he has,

  195. this voice has a message

  196. of comfort and hope.

  197. Verse six to eight,

  198. there is the second voice.

  199. And that voice too speaks hope

  200. that God's word,

  201. God's word of promise will stand.

  202. And then verses nine to 11,

  203. there is this third voice,

  204. this third message.

  205. And it too speaks hope

  206. that your savior king,

  207. your powerful shepherd king,

  208. will come.

  209. So verse one,

  210. God is speaking to these three messengers

  211. and he's saying,

  212. here's your tone.

  213. Your tone to rebellious,

  214. disobedient people

  215. is to be that of comfort,

  216. of kindness,

  217. of parental care.

  218. Verse two,

  219. speak tenderly to Jerusalem.

  220. Use a gentle tone.

  221. Also the idea of persuading the people

  222. to return,

  223. to receive this invitation

  224. back to the love of God.

  225. It's a message of comfort

  226. and it's to be spoken tenderly

  227. because there is good news here.

  228. Proclaim to her

  229. that her hard service

  230. has been completed.

  231. So here's the thing,

  232. even before they go into exile,

  233. so they know in Babylon,

  234. they're going to face

  235. conditions of slavery.

  236. There's going to be

  237. hard labor going on there.

  238. But even before that happens,

  239. there is this promise

  240. it will not be the last word.

  241. That time will come to an end

  242. and you will return home.

  243. Proclaim that her hard service

  244. has been completed,

  245. that her sin

  246. has been paid for.

  247. This brings to mind

  248. the language of sacrifice,

  249. that there is an offering

  250. that will satisfy God's justice

  251. against their moral

  252. and spiritual guilt.

  253. Proclaim to her

  254. that she has received

  255. from the Lord's hand

  256. double for all her sins.

  257. She's received

  258. from the Lord's hand.

  259. Again, in the context of sacrifice,

  260. who is it that sets up

  261. the sacrificial system?

  262. It's God.

  263. God says,

  264. here is how you are

  265. to worship me.

  266. Here is how you are

  267. to find a way of forgiveness

  268. and atonement

  269. for your sins.

  270. And God says,

  271. I will forgive you

  272. and I will welcome you

  273. and I will regard you

  274. as my own people.

  275. You will receive double.

  276. God will deal generously

  277. with you.

  278. So here is a message

  279. of real comfort

  280. for unfaithful people

  281. if they will turn back to God,

  282. if they will receive

  283. the grace that he offers.

  284. Here in the Old Testament,

  285. we find this wonderful

  286. gospel announcement

  287. that with God,

  288. there is a grace

  289. that is greater

  290. than all of our sin.

  291. How is that possible?

  292. Well, remember Isaiah 40

  293. is part of a bigger section,

  294. 40 to 55.

  295. That section

  296. climaxes

  297. with the announcement

  298. of the suffering servant

  299. of Isaiah 52 and 53

  300. and the hope

  301. and the joy

  302. that he brings

  303. in 54 and 55.

  304. So the question

  305. for the people

  306. then was,

  307. who is this suffering servant

  308. that we are to wait for,

  309. that we are to pin

  310. our hopes on?

  311. And we know

  312. that he is Jesus.

  313. We know that Jesus,

  314. the child in the manger,

  315. is the man on the cross

  316. at Calvary,

  317. is the promised

  318. suffering servant

  319. that we find

  320. in the book of Isaiah.

  321. He is the one

  322. who is wounded for us.

  323. He is the one

  324. who is punished for us.

  325. He is the one

  326. who is killed

  327. for our sin

  328. and our rebellion.

  329. And it's by his wounds,

  330. Isaiah says,

  331. that we are healed.

  332. It's in his death

  333. that we die

  334. to the power of sin

  335. over us.

  336. That we have a new master

  337. and his name is Jesus.

  338. And in his resurrection life,

  339. we enjoy true life

  340. and real freedom.

  341. There is comfort

  342. because there is grace

  343. beyond judgment.

  344. And because that is true for us,

  345. because we receive grace,

  346. we are also to be those

  347. who extend grace to others.

  348. One of our favorite TV shows

  349. is Modern Family.

  350. And in Modern Family,

  351. there is a Christmas episode.

  352. The household that is involved

  353. is the Dunphy family

  354. and the dad is usually

  355. a bit of a soft touch.

  356. But he decides there comes a point

  357. where he needs to lay down the law.

  358. And so there is this suspicious burn mark

  359. that is found on their couch.

  360. And he presumes one of the kids

  361. has been smoking.

  362. And so he announces to the family,

  363. this usual soft touch guy,

  364. he announces Christmas is cancelled.

  365. And he drags the Christmas tree

  366. out into the garden.

  367. And the whole episode

  368. is about his angst

  369. because Christmas has been cancelled.

  370. And our family joke,

  371. we talk about it quite a lot.

  372. Let's not be the family

  373. that cancels Christmas.

  374. Let's not be the family

  375. that's so heavy on judgment

  376. that we forget

  377. to show grace

  378. to our children,

  379. to the people

  380. in our family,

  381. in our neighborhood.

  382. Because we have received grace,

  383. we are to spread

  384. the grace of God

  385. to others.

  386. What do we do

  387. with the mistakes

  388. and failures of others?

  389. Are we quick to jump on them?

  390. To judge and criticize?

  391. Do we keep bringing up

  392. those mistakes

  393. so we never move past

  394. and we don't allow others

  395. to move past?

  396. Or do we choose to remember

  397. that love covers

  398. over a multitude of sins?

  399. This extension of grace

  400. is a great way

  401. to be counter-cultural

  402. in a really positive way.

  403. In a world where people

  404. are quick to jump to,

  405. these are my rights

  406. that I demand.

  407. In a world that's really quick

  408. to say that person

  409. should pay for that offense

  410. or for that wrong,

  411. we can dazzle

  412. with the grace of God

  413. that we find

  414. in Jesus Christ.

  415. So there is comfort here

  416. because there is this promise

  417. of grace beyond judgment.

  418. Let's think now

  419. about this messenger

  420. in verses 3 to 5.

  421. What's his message?

  422. His message is

  423. prepare

  424. because the king of glory

  425. and grace

  426. is coming.

  427. Let's read those verses.

  428. A voice of one calling

  429. in the desert,

  430. prepare the way

  431. for the Lord.

  432. Make straight

  433. in the wilderness

  434. a highway

  435. for our God.

  436. Every valley

  437. shall be raised up,

  438. every mountain

  439. and hill made low.

  440. The rough ground

  441. shall become level,

  442. the rugged places

  443. a plain.

  444. And the glory

  445. of the Lord

  446. will be revealed

  447. and all mankind

  448. together will see it

  449. for the mouth

  450. of the Lord

  451. has spoken.

  452. Here's the picture.

  453. It's the picture

  454. of a royal procession

  455. that's on the move.

  456. And when royalty

  457. was on the move

  458. in this day

  459. then the route

  460. had to be made ready.

  461. You had to do your best

  462. to level the ground

  463. so when the king

  464. went through

  465. and his horses

  466. he had smooth passage.

  467. That was still

  468. the thinking

  469. when Jesus

  470. on his donkey

  471. made his

  472. triumphal entry

  473. into Jerusalem.

  474. What did the crowds

  475. do for their king?

  476. They put their cloaks

  477. and their palm branches

  478. on the ground

  479. to make the way smooth

  480. because royalty

  481. was coming.

  482. On a much lesser level

  483. I used to work

  484. as a school boy

  485. and then as a student

  486. in the co-op

  487. in Port Tree

  488. and one summer

  489. the national boss

  490. of the co-op

  491. was coming

  492. all the way

  493. from Manchester

  494. to visit our store.

  495. And so what came next

  496. was a frenzy

  497. of just ridiculous

  498. artificial activity.

  499. So there was loads

  500. of repainting

  501. that was done

  502. loads of cleaning

  503. we all had to do

  504. extra hours

  505. to make sure

  506. all the stuff

  507. on the shelves

  508. was like nice

  509. and straightened up

  510. for those few minutes

  511. when he'd come

  512. and have a quick chat

  513. and disappear

  514. and it was all

  515. to really

  516. no much purpose

  517. at all.

  518. But somebody

  519. really important

  520. was coming

  521. and so we had

  522. to prepare

  523. the way.

  524. Someone important

  525. is coming here

  526. and so it's time

  527. to prepare.

  528. The road must be

  529. straight and smooth

  530. and free

  531. of obstacles.

  532. It's a way

  533. of saying

  534. this king

  535. this king

  536. that Isaiah

  537. has been told

  538. to speak about

  539. he's coming

  540. he'll come quickly

  541. he won't be

  542. delayed.

  543. So the question

  544. for us again

  545. is which king

  546. is coming?

  547. Who are we

  548. preparing for?

  549. As Isaiah

  550. brings this message

  551. who's coming

  552. verse 3

  553. prepare the way

  554. for the Lord.

  555. The personal

  556. powerful

  557. covenant making

  558. God

  559. is coming

  560. for his people.

  561. This is

  562. verse 3

  563. God's

  564. highway.

  565. He is on

  566. his way

  567. to bring

  568. grace

  569. beyond

  570. judgment

  571. and he

  572. will not

  573. be stopped.

  574. This will

  575. be a

  576. powerful

  577. revelation.

  578. Verse 5

  579. the glory

  580. of the Lord

  581. will

  582. be revealed

  583. because

  584. whenever God

  585. is acting

  586. to save

  587. people

  588. we inevitably

  589. see his

  590. glory.

  591. You think

  592. about it

  593. through the

  594. Bible.

  595. You think

  596. about how

  597. God saved

  598. Noah

  599. and he

  600. receives

  601. glory

  602. for

  603. providing

  604. for

  605. Noah

  606. in the

  607. ark.

  608. God

  609. gets glory

  610. for the

  611. way he

  612. rescues

  613. his people

  614. from slavery

  615. in Egypt

  616. because he

  617. delivers those

  618. plagues

  619. and he

  620. opens the

  621. Red Sea

  622. so Israel

  623. can travel

  624. through

  625. safely.

  626. So often

  627. in the Old

  628. Testament

  629. God gets

  630. glory for

  631. saving his

  632. people because

  633. he fights

  634. the battles

  635. for them.

  636. The people

  637. wait and

  638. see the

  639. deliverance

  640. of God

  641. and when

  642. God comes

  643. in human

  644. form as

  645. the Lord

  646. Jesus Christ

  647. he gets

  648. glory as

  649. he dies

  650. for our

  651. sin on

  652. the cross.

  653. That's what

  654. Jesus prayed

  655. for.

  656. That he

  657. would be

  658. glorified,

  659. that his

  660. father would

  661. be glorified

  662. and there

  663. is glory

  664. there as

  665. he accomplishes

  666. the plan of

  667. salvation,

  668. as he opens

  669. the way for

  670. men and

  671. women,

  672. boys and

  673. girls,

  674. back to

  675. God.

  676. There is

  677. glory whenever

  678. any of us

  679. individually

  680. come to

  681. faith in

  682. the Lord

  683. Jesus.

  684. He's worked

  685. the miracle

  686. of grace

  687. and glory

  688. in our

  689. hearts.

  690. There is

  691. the glory

  692. that comes

  693. because the

  694. Lord is

  695. present.

  696. Here's

  697. another way

  698. of Isaiah

  699. saying prepare

  700. for Emmanuel,

  701. prepare for

  702. God to be

  703. with you,

  704. God in

  705. his glory

  706. to be

  707. with you.

  708. And notice

  709. that this

  710. won't just

  711. be for a

  712. few.

  713. Remember the

  714. extent of

  715. God's

  716. generous

  717. grace.

  718. This isn't

  719. now just

  720. for a

  721. remnant,

  722. a small

  723. portion of

  724. Israel.

  725. When this

  726. king comes,

  727. when this

  728. king of

  729. glory and

  730. grace is

  731. revealed,

  732. verse 5,

  733. all mankind

  734. together will

  735. see it.

  736. Jesus and

  737. his glory is

  738. to stand

  739. as a

  740. universal

  741. revelation

  742. of God's

  743. grace for

  744. the world.

  745. So this

  746. king is

  747. coming.

  748. We are

  749. invited to

  750. prepare and

  751. this visit

  752. is certain.

  753. Verse 5,

  754. the mouth

  755. of the

  756. Lord has

  757. spoken.

  758. So this

  759. voice that

  760. speaks tender

  761. comfort is

  762. saying to

  763. people about

  764. to go into

  765. exile,

  766. people living

  767. in moral

  768. and spiritual

  769. darkness,

  770. saying God

  771. himself is

  772. coming.

  773. He will

  774. come revealing

  775. his glory to

  776. the world.

  777. He has come

  778. to bring

  779. freedom.

  780. He has come

  781. announcing sins

  782. will be

  783. forgiven.

  784. Do we

  785. see where

  786. this is

  787. heading?

  788. Do we

  789. see why

  790. 700 years

  791. later,

  792. as Mark

  793. and Matthew

  794. were writing

  795. their gospels,

  796. they saw

  797. John the

  798. Baptist as

  799. this messenger?

  800. As they

  801. reflected on

  802. the life of

  803. Jesus and

  804. his ministry

  805. and his

  806. saving work

  807. on the cross

  808. where they

  809. thought,

  810. well,

  811. obviously,

  812. John the

  813. Baptist was

  814. sent to

  815. prepare the

  816. way for

  817. King Jesus.

  818. And it

  819. helps us to

  820. understand why

  821. John,

  822. when he's

  823. writing his

  824. gospel,

  825. said the

  826. word became

  827. flesh and

  828. dwelt among

  829. us and we

  830. have seen

  831. his glory,

  832. the glory of

  833. the one and

  834. only,

  835. full of grace

  836. and truth

  837. because this

  838. king,

  839. King Jesus,

  840. he's the

  841. Lord.

  842. So for

  843. Israel,

  844. then here is

  845. a hope for

  846. them to hold

  847. on to.

  848. Here is

  849. something worth

  850. waiting for.

  851. Yes,

  852. they're waiting

  853. for exile,

  854. but yes,

  855. they're also

  856. promised that

  857. there is grace

  858. beyond that.

  859. judgment and

  860. for us,

  861. well,

  862. we know that

  863. Jesus has

  864. come.

  865. We know that

  866. his grace and

  867. his glory have

  868. appeared.

  869. We have come

  870. to know

  871. grace beyond

  872. the judgment

  873. that we

  874. deserve

  875. because that's

  876. the message

  877. that the cross

  878. speaks to us.

  879. We look at the

  880. cross and we

  881. realize that's

  882. what my sin

  883. deserves.

  884. And we look

  885. at the cross

  886. and we say,

  887. that's God's

  888. grace so that

  889. I don't have

  890. to receive

  891. the punishment

  892. that my sin

  893. deserves.

  894. So when days

  895. seem dumb,

  896. when we mess

  897. up,

  898. when we fail

  899. and when we

  900. sin,

  901. we have this

  902. message of

  903. comfort that

  904. our King

  905. has come

  906. and he is

  907. for us.

  908. And it's a

  909. message for us

  910. to share also.

  911. for the

  912. people that

  913. we know

  914. who seem

  915. to lack

  916. hope,

  917. who live

  918. with fear

  919. and uncertainty,

  920. who are

  921. looking for

  922. something solid

  923. to hold

  924. on to.

  925. We can

  926. say to

  927. people,

  928. did you

  929. know that

  930. our God

  931. offers comfort

  932. and hope?

  933. And he's

  934. shown us that

  935. by giving us

  936. Jesus.

  937. So as we

  938. await our

  939. King's return,

  940. so this first

  941. group,

  942. they're waiting

  943. for the King

  944. to come,

  945. our King

  946. has already

  947. come,

  948. now we're

  949. waiting for

  950. his return.

  951. We can be

  952. involved in

  953. this work of

  954. preparing the

  955. way,

  956. preparing the

  957. way so that

  958. others might

  959. see and

  960. respond to

  961. the glory of

  962. King Jesus.

  963. We can

  964. prepare the

  965. way by

  966. perhaps inviting

  967. people to

  968. come to

  969. nativity or

  970. to carols by

  971. candlelight.

  972. We can

  973. prepare the

  974. way by

  975. sharing our

  976. faith with

  977. our colleagues

  978. and our

  979. family members.

  980. we can

  981. prepare the

  982. way by

  983. inviting

  984. someone to

  985. read the

  986. Bible with

  987. us and

  988. all so that

  989. people would

  990. see the

  991. glory of

  992. the Lord

  993. as we

  994. find it

  995. in Jesus.

  996. Let's pray

  997. together.

  998. together.
