  1. Father, sometimes your word is really hard to understand, and sometimes your word, it's just hard to understand, it frightens us, sometimes it delights us, but sometimes it frightens us.

  2. Father, we ask that you grow in us a great trust in you. We confess before you, Father, that your word is always a clear word, that it's our minds and hearts that need to be changed.

  3. So, Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would fall upon our minds and our hearts and our wills and our souls, so that we might hear your word and receive your word and receive Jesus as our Savior and Lord, and so with him as our Savior, that as your word enters into our life, that our lives, our day-to-day lives, will bear much fruit that brings you great glory.

  4. Father, this is our prayer, and we ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  5. Please be seated.

  6. So, one of the things that you can do for me is, in fact, if you start to drift off today because it's dark and you're tired because you're still trying to get over Christmas,

  7. let me turn this, one of the things you could do is pray for me today and also pray for me for next coming Sunday.

  8. Throughout the entire Christmas holidays, I was aware of the fact that I was going to come back in my first Sunday back to teaching on the book of Luke.

  9. I was going to have two very hard texts to deal with.

  10. The first one, which we're going to look at in a moment, Luke 16.

  11. You might want to sort of get that in your Bibles because we're going to read it in a moment.

  12. And if you don't have Bibles, there's always some Bibles up at the front that you can take, and you're welcome to use them.

  13. Keep them as a gift from us or return them afterwards.

  14. This week, we're going to deal with what all commentators agree is the hardest parable of all of Jesus' parables to understand.

  15. And in fact, most commentators will say it's actually the hardest text to understand in all of the Gospel of Luke.

  16. And next week, I get to talk about divorce.

  17. So I have two hard texts.

  18. And so if you could pray for me an extra amount this week, I would really appreciate it.

  19. And so today, we're going to look at, those of you who know your Bibles,

  20. we're going to look at the text of the dishonest steward.

  21. The dishonest manager.

  22. And in some ways, this is a nightmare text for people.

  23. I bet if you were to read this text to the condo dwellers all around us,

  24. or to many of the people in your work, maybe even your own family members,

  25. it would just bring up many of the fears that people have about religion.

  26. Because it seems as if in this parable that Jesus praises a fellow

  27. for, first of all, being a lazy, ineffective worker,

  28. and then ripping off his boss.

  29. And it seems as if, in first reading, it looks as if Jesus is praising this behavior.

  30. And as I said, it touches a nerve, because for many people in our culture,

  31. when they see the Christian faith or any type of religion or spirituality,

  32. they think that it's just a cover for immoral behavior.

  33. I mean, over the past year, we've seen people in ISIS,

  34. in between their five times of daily prayer,

  35. playing soccer with the heads of people they've beheaded.

  36. Popular fiction and movie, and maybe even our own experience,

  37. is familiar with people who are deacons and elders in church on Sunday morning,

  38. and the rest of the week they have their slum landlords,

  39. they oppress their workers.

  40. And this is the deep fear that many in our culture have,

  41. is that religion and spirituality,

  42. and therefore Christianity, the Christian faith,

  43. is just a cover for evil.

  44. And so when they see a text like this,

  45. that appears to have Jesus promoting dishonest business dealings,

  46. it's very difficult.

  47. And for those of us who are followers of Jesus,

  48. not even affected by the world in that particular way,

  49. it's just a very troubling text.

  50. Surely Jesus can't be promoting

  51. what in other places he would say is evil.

  52. So, Luke 16, 1 to 15,

  53. I'm going to read the text.

  54. And you'll see what I'm talking about very, very quickly.

  55. If you're unfamiliar with the text,

  56. some of you will say,

  57. oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember that Bible text.

  58. Others, maybe you're hearing it for the first time.

  59. But here at Church of the Messiah,

  60. we try to preach through books of the Bible,

  61. and we're going through Luke.

  62. So this is the text that we're going to look at today.

  63. And here's how it goes.

  64. Jesus also said to the disciples,

  65. there was a rich man who had a manager,

  66. and charges were brought to the rich man

  67. that the manager was wasting his possessions.

  68. And the rich man called the manager

  69. and said to the manager,

  70. what is this that I hear about you?

  71. Turn in the account of your management,

  72. for you can no longer be manager.

  73. In other words,

  74. the rich man's announced that the guy's being fired,

  75. and he's giving him whatever,

  76. a week, a month, or whatever it is.

  77. He's giving him notice, but he's fired.

  78. Inside, that's what the manager was doing.

  79. He was screaming, as we'll see in a moment.

  80. Verse 3,

  81. And the manager said to himself,

  82. what shall I do?

  83. Since my master has taken the management away from me,

  84. I am not strong enough to dig,

  85. and I am ashamed to beg.

  86. Ah, I have decided what to do,

  87. so that even when I am removed from management,

  88. people may receive me into their houses.

  89. So summoning his master's debtors one by one,

  90. the manager said to the first debtor,

  91. how much do you owe my master?

  92. And the debtor said,

  93. a hundred measures of oil.

  94. And the manager said to him,

  95. take your bill and sit down quickly and write 50.

  96. Now just sort of pause there for a second.

  97. Two things.

  98. In the ancient world,

  99. the way that these types of debts

  100. would have often been recorded

  101. is that the person who was in debt,

  102. they would write out,

  103. if they could write,

  104. they would write out in their own hand

  105. that they owed so much money.

  106. And so what the manager has done

  107. is he's come,

  108. and he's brought the copy

  109. because he would keep the copy of what's owed,

  110. and probably what he's done

  111. is he's ripped it up or burned it,

  112. and he said,

  113. now write 50 instead.

  114. And the fellow goes along with it.

  115. And just to have a bit of a sense

  116. of how much this is,

  117. like a hundred measures of oil,

  118. is it like a hundred bucks?

  119. Is it like a hundred pennies?

  120. Like what is it?

  121. That was approximately the average,

  122. it was approximately four years wages

  123. for an average working guy or gal.

  124. So that's how much it was.

  125. Four years wages.

  126. A lot of money.

  127. Especially in a culture like that

  128. where there was, in a sense,

  129. virtually no middle class.

  130. Basically, you had fairly well-off people.

  131. A very, very tiny sort of middle class.

  132. And then the rest of the people

  133. were basically lucky

  134. lucky if they could live paycheck to paycheck.

  135. Just basically getting by.

  136. And so four years wages,

  137. that's a lot of money.

  138. Okay, so back to verse 7.

  139. Then the manager said to another debtor,

  140. and how much do you owe?

  141. And the man said,

  142. I owe a hundred measures of wheat.

  143. And the manager said to him,

  144. take your bill and write 80.

  145. And just sort of pause here for a second.

  146. How much money is this worth?

  147. It's worth somewhere between

  148. 10 to 12 years wages

  149. for an average working guy or gal.

  150. 10 to 12 years wages

  151. of an average guy or gal.

  152. Almost enough for an average working person

  153. to retire for the rest of their life.

  154. Maybe it is enough.

  155. Those of you who know about money

  156. might say,

  157. George, actually, if you have 10 times,

  158. that's enough.

  159. I don't know.

  160. But it's close, right?

  161. It's a lot of money.

  162. A lot of money.

  163. 10 to 12 years wages

  164. for an average working person.

  165. So verse 8,

  166. the first half of verse 8

  167. is going to be the end of the parable.

  168. And then after this,

  169. Jesus is going to comment on the parable.

  170. And so what happens next?

  171. Well, we find in verse 8,

  172. the master finding out

  173. what the manager,

  174. his manager has done.

  175. Verse 8,

  176. End of parable.

  177. Wow.

  178. What a parable.

  179. And then,

  180. because the verses were written,

  181. added like a thousand years

  182. or something like that,

  183. more after the writing of the New Testament,

  184. some monks added it.

  185. Most scholars would say

  186. that the parable ends with

  187. the master commended

  188. the dishonest manager

  189. for his shrewdness.

  190. And now we start to have

  191. Jesus' comments on it.

  192. For the sons of this world

  193. are more shrewd

  194. in dealing with their own generation

  195. than the sons of light.

  196. And I tell you,

  197. make friends for yourselves

  198. by means of unrighteous wealth

  199. so that when it fails,

  200. they may receive you

  201. into the eternal dwellings.

  202. One who is faithful in a very little

  203. is also faithful in much,

  204. and one who is dishonest in a very little

  205. is also dishonest in much.

  206. If then you have not been faithful

  207. in the unrighteous wealth,

  208. who will entrust to you

  209. the true riches?

  210. And if you have not been faithful

  211. in that which is in others,

  212. who will give you

  213. that which is your own?

  214. No servant can serve two masters,

  215. for either he will hate the one

  216. and love the other,

  217. or he will be devoted to the one

  218. and despise the other.

  219. You cannot serve God and money.

  220. The Pharisees,

  221. who were lovers of money,

  222. heard all these things,

  223. and they ridiculed Jesus.

  224. In fact,

  225. ridicule is a good word,

  226. but it's just,

  227. they sneered at him,

  228. they despised him,

  229. they had contempt for him,

  230. and their contempt for Jesus

  231. comes out in a contemptuous,

  232. deriding,

  233. sneering,

  234. abusive language.

  235. And Jesus said to them,

  236. you are those

  237. who justify yourselves

  238. before men,

  239. but God knows your hearts,

  240. for what is exalted among men

  241. is an abomination

  242. in the sight of God.

  243. So,

  244. what's going on in this text?

  245. You know,

  246. some of the lessons

  247. that Jesus says

  248. all sound pretty good.

  249. I mean,

  250. some of us will have

  251. real concerns about this.

  252. I've become very conscious

  253. over the last year or two

  254. that whenever we talk about money,

  255. that for Quebecois,

  256. I hope I'm pointing

  257. in the right direction,

  258. for our Quebecois friends,

  259. there's this long memory

  260. of how the church

  261. kept,

  262. used Christian teaching

  263. to keep them poor.

  264. And so,

  265. there's hackles raised

  266. about any time money

  267. is raised.

  268. And there's some complexities

  269. there to Jesus' teaching,

  270. but is Jesus

  271. contradicting himself?

  272. Like,

  273. at the end,

  274. he seems to say

  275. that dishonesty isn't good,

  276. but in the early part,

  277. he seems to be

  278. commending the guy

  279. for,

  280. not,

  281. he seems to be

  282. commending the guy

  283. for being lazy

  284. and ineffective,

  285. dealing with his laziness

  286. and ineffective

  287. by ripping off his boss

  288. and actually conspiring

  289. with other people

  290. to rip off the boss

  291. so that when he's fired,

  292. he'll be able to live

  293. with the guys

  294. who have conspired

  295. to rip off the owner.

  296. And that's a very odd parable.

  297. So,

  298. what's going on?

  299. Is this justifying?

  300. Is this,

  301. is the Bible,

  302. in a sense,

  303. saying,

  304. go thou

  305. and do likewise?

  306. Well,

  307. here's the first thing

  308. I'm going to say,

  309. and it's going to be

  310. a little bit of a surprising direction

  311. to maybe talk about,

  312. but it's actually

  313. a very good point

  314. to mention here,

  315. and it's a good point

  316. to remember

  317. all of the time

  318. that we read the Bible.

  319. And here's the first point.

  320. Unlike you and me,

  321. the living God

  322. is not insecure.

  323. Unlike you and me,

  324. the living God

  325. is not insecure.

  326. Now,

  327. why do I say this?

  328. You know,

  329. there's a figure

  330. by the name of

  331. Feuerbach,

  332. whose name I probably

  333. haven't pronounced correctly,

  334. and he influenced

  335. a guy by the name of Marx,

  336. and they all

  337. influenced people

  338. like Freud.

  339. And they sort of

  340. are just capturing

  341. some things

  342. that some early Greeks

  343. said,

  344. because,

  345. you know,

  346. everything's sort of

  347. just footnotes

  348. to Aristotle.

  349. And one of the things

  350. that they developed

  351. was this idea

  352. that human beings,

  353. like Marx and Feuerbach

  354. said,

  355. and Freud said

  356. that God doesn't exist,

  357. that what happens

  358. is that we project

  359. desires that we want

  360. or that our tribe wants,

  361. and we project this

  362. to create

  363. some imaginary being

  364. called God.

  365. And,

  366. now,

  367. Christians should accept

  368. that this is true,

  369. by the way.

  370. Christians should accept

  371. that this is true,

  372. that Feuerbach

  373. and Marx

  374. and Freud

  375. and early ancient Greeks

  376. and modern people

  377. who say that,

  378. that they're actually

  379. saying something

  380. which is true

  381. about human nature.

  382. We do project

  383. onto God

  384. and create a God

  385. in our own image

  386. and likeness

  387. that reflects

  388. our insecurities,

  389. our fears,

  390. our longings,

  391. our yearnings,

  392. and stuff like that.

  393. The place we disagree

  394. with Freud and all

  395. is that

  396. well,

  397. that's actually

  398. sort of begging

  399. the question

  400. as to whether or not

  401. there actually

  402. is such a being

  403. called God

  404. who does exist.

  405. And what if there

  406. is a God

  407. that does exist

  408. and we Christians

  409. aren't saying anything

  410. other than the fact

  411. that we're beggars

  412. telling one other beggar

  413. where to find bread

  414. and we believe

  415. not that our philosophy

  416. is wiser,

  417. not that,

  418. because we have,

  419. we're not saying

  420. that we have smarter philosophers,

  421. smarter mystics,

  422. smarter poets,

  423. smarter thinkers

  424. than anybody else,

  425. we're not claiming

  426. anything special,

  427. all we're saying

  428. is that God

  429. has spoken

  430. and revealed himself

  431. and we've received it.

  432. But the fundamental insight

  433. that we project

  434. ourselves

  435. is very true.

  436. And so you see,

  437. the fact of the matter

  438. is that every human being

  439. is insecure.

  440. Some of us

  441. are massively,

  442. unbelievably,

  443. wildly,

  444. you know,

  445. you know,

  446. bridezilla type

  447. of insecure.

  448. And others,

  449. it's maybe deeply buried,

  450. but all of us

  451. have divided hearts.

  452. All of us,

  453. in fact,

  454. have very,

  455. very different

  456. types of desires.

  457. Like,

  458. it's not unusual,

  459. if you're honest

  460. with yourself,

  461. it's not unusual

  462. that over the course

  463. of the day,

  464. that part of the day

  465. you might sort of wish

  466. that you were as gentle

  467. and wise

  468. as St. Francis of Assisi

  469. and other times

  470. you might wish

  471. that you were like

  472. Hugh Heffler,

  473. at the Playboy Mansion.

  474. In other points in time

  475. you might believe

  476. that you might sort of

  477. have as a virtue

  478. that you're just

  479. caring for other people

  480. the way Mother Teresa

  481. cared for people.

  482. And then another point

  483. in time in the day

  484. you wish that you were

  485. like Arnold Schwarzenegger

  486. or Bruce Willis,

  487. I'm talking like as a guy,

  488. okay?

  489. And that you could

  490. sort of blast people

  491. and on.

  492. And other times

  493. you sort of wish

  494. that you were

  495. as evangelistic

  496. as Billy Graham

  497. and the other day,

  498. parts of the time

  499. you wish that you were

  500. maybe just able

  501. to talk and curse

  502. and do all sorts of things

  503. and this can all happen

  504. in the course of a day,

  505. it can happen

  506. in the course of an hour,

  507. but it can definitely

  508. happen in the course

  509. of a week.

  510. that we have all these

  511. different personas

  512. and desires

  513. all going on within us

  514. and we're unstable

  515. because we're multiple selves

  516. and that always creates

  517. within us

  518. a fundamental insecurity.

  519. And because we're insecure

  520. it means that we have

  521. great problems

  522. with doctrines

  523. like God's grace,

  524. doctrines like

  525. of judgment,

  526. of hell,

  527. of human freedom,

  528. of providence,

  529. all of these things

  530. we have problems

  531. not just when we come

  532. to this parable

  533. which I'm still going

  534. to get to in a moment,

  535. I haven't forgotten it,

  536. but we have problems

  537. with it all the time

  538. because as part of our

  539. insecurity

  540. and our multiple selves

  541. we're very aware

  542. of the fact that

  543. whether it's ourselves

  544. or somebody else

  545. or maybe we grew up

  546. in a family

  547. where the dad

  548. wasn't able to express

  549. being unhappy

  550. with his wife

  551. so he took it out

  552. on the kids

  553. or the dad

  554. wasn't able to deal

  555. with the fact

  556. that he couldn't get

  557. along with his boss

  558. and so he takes it

  559. out on the wife

  560. or maybe we had a boss

  561. and we can see

  562. that she wasn't able

  563. to deal with her anger

  564. or discipline

  565. and her employees

  566. so she took it out

  567. maybe on waiters

  568. or waitresses

  569. or on her own family

  570. and we're just used

  571. to people

  572. and we can see

  573. it in our own selves

  574. we're inconsistent

  575. and sometimes

  576. we're too aggressive

  577. and sometimes

  578. we're too weak

  579. and passive

  580. and so when we see

  581. doctrines in the Bible

  582. of God's grace

  583. and of judgment

  584. and of hell

  585. and of God speaking

  586. without realizing it

  587. we project

  588. our insecurities

  589. and our multiple selves

  590. onto the text

  591. and we worry

  592. that that's what God's like

  593. but the Bible wants us

  594. to know

  595. that God

  596. is never

  597. ever

  598. and never has been

  599. insecure

  600. and he's never had

  601. multiple selves

  602. or multiple desires

  603. God is always

  604. unchangeably

  605. himself

  606. and that the

  607. whole doctrine

  608. of God's

  609. unchangeableness

  610. is designed

  611. to protect

  612. this idea

  613. that we don't have

  614. to wake up tomorrow

  615. to discover

  616. that God now says

  617. that murder is good

  618. we don't have to worry

  619. that tomorrow

  620. we will wake up

  621. and God has changed

  622. his mind

  623. on anything

  624. nothing can change

  625. God's mind

  626. nothing can stop

  627. God from being God

  628. God is always

  629. himself

  630. he's always good

  631. he's always true

  632. he's always wise

  633. he's always strong

  634. he's always present

  635. he's always active

  636. he always knows

  637. all things

  638. he is unchangeably

  639. himself

  640. and because

  641. he's so secure

  642. he and his word

  643. allows images

  644. to be used

  645. of the Christian

  646. life and of himself

  647. which are shocking

  648. to us

  649. you see

  650. we don't want to use

  651. we don't want to refer

  652. to ourselves

  653. in ways

  654. I mean we might

  655. sort of play around

  656. and refer to ourselves

  657. in shocking types

  658. of ways

  659. in areas where

  660. we're secure

  661. but in an area

  662. where we're not

  663. secure about

  664. ourselves

  665. and somebody

  666. uses an analogy

  667. about us

  668. that touches on us

  669. we get very

  670. very uncomfortable

  671. with it

  672. but God

  673. is always secure

  674. and that's why

  675. in the Bible

  676. like you know

  677. if we went to the

  678. condos

  679. or the University

  680. of Ottawa

  681. and we were to say

  682. that one of the

  683. main images

  684. that God uses

  685. of himself

  686. is the Lord of hosts

  687. which means

  688. that he's the

  689. commander in chief

  690. of angel armies

  691. that would make

  692. people very

  693. uncomfortable

  694. that might not

  695. make us uncomfortable

  696. some of us

  697. it might

  698. but others

  699. it would make

  700. them very uncomfortable

  701. but God

  702. compares himself

  703. in the Bible

  704. sometimes to a

  705. drunken soldier

  706. to an unjust

  707. uncaring judge

  708. the whole means

  709. by which Jesus

  710. died for us

  711. has become

  712. just a common

  713. place

  714. and people

  715. wear it as

  716. jewelry

  717. but it was

  718. unbelievably

  719. shocking

  720. and offensive

  721. to the first

  722. generations

  723. of people

  724. who knew

  725. crucifixion

  726. as something

  727. that they would

  728. if not witness

  729. in their lifetime

  730. at least have

  731. heard about

  732. or know

  733. that it happens

  734. in parts of the

  735. empire

  736. and many of them

  737. it would have

  738. been a living

  739. experience

  740. for them

  741. that they

  742. would have

  743. witnessed

  744. and so

  745. the first

  746. thing is

  747. okay

  748. we're shocked

  749. here

  750. Jesus is

  751. using an

  752. analogy

  753. of a whole

  754. pile

  755. of corrupt

  756. people

  757. well we

  758. probably

  759. wouldn't do

  760. that

  761. but God's

  762. not insecure

  763. Jesus isn't

  764. insecure

  765. he knows

  766. who he is

  767. and because

  768. he knows

  769. who he is

  770. he's able

  771. to use

  772. things which

  773. are shocking

  774. shocking

  775. to good

  776. people like

  777. you and me

  778. who

  779. even if we

  780. cheat on

  781. our taxes

  782. even if

  783. sometimes

  784. the person

  785. at the

  786. cash

  787. gives us

  788. too much

  789. change

  790. and we

  791. don't

  792. return

  793. the

  794. difference

  795. because

  796. they gave

  797. us

  798. ten dollars

  799. or twenty

  800. dollars

  801. too much

  802. we know

  803. we know

  804. that we

  805. shouldn't

  806. do it

  807. and we'd

  808. like to

  809. think

  810. that we

  811. would be

  812. the type

  813. of people

  814. who wouldn't

  815. do those

  816. things

  817. but this

  818. parable might

  819. speak very

  820. powerfully to

  821. other people

  822. and God is

  823. not insecure

  824. so he uses

  825. sometimes shocking

  826. things to catch

  827. our attention

  828. and throughout

  829. these last two

  830. weeks over

  831. Christmas when I

  832. would mention to

  833. different people I

  834. was going to

  835. preach on this

  836. they say Luke

  837. 16 what the

  838. answer the story

  839. about the

  840. dishonest manager

  841. they go whoa

  842. that parable

  843. like people who

  844. read through the

  845. gospels that's one

  846. of the parables that

  847. sticks in their

  848. mind because it

  849. sticks in their

  850. craw it sticks in

  851. our craw

  852. so that's the

  853. first it's just a

  854. general thing about

  855. it all the time is

  856. that we realize that

  857. we're reading the

  858. text it's not that

  859. the Bible is ever

  860. unbalanced it's we're

  861. unbalanced and we

  862. fear that our

  863. unbalancedness and

  864. insecurity and

  865. multiple selves that

  866. that's somehow an

  867. evidence in the text

  868. and God is never

  869. insecure he's always

  870. himself he's always

  871. God praise be to

  872. God we never have

  873. to worry that God

  874. will stop being

  875. loving never

  876. nothing can stop him

  877. being loving

  878. nothing can stop him

  879. being love itself

  880. so somebody said okay

  881. George well that's

  882. okay okay well

  883. okay so God uses

  884. shocking images

  885. but George George

  886. George George

  887. this is a this is a

  888. parable about

  889. conspiracy successful

  890. apparently successful

  891. conspiracy to

  892. defraud and

  893. Jesus does seem to

  894. commend the person

  895. for it and so

  896. what on earth is

  897. going on okay

  898. well here's I'm

  899. going to put up the

  900. point and I'm

  901. going to try to

  902. explain the point

  903. and if you could

  904. put up the second

  905. point here's what I

  906. think is going on in

  907. the text the Bible

  908. presents only two

  909. ways two ways for

  910. human beings to

  911. follow or to live

  912. one way is to

  913. strive for self

  914. justification the

  915. other way is by

  916. humble faith in

  917. Jesus receive God's

  918. free gift of

  919. justification I'll

  920. say the game I

  921. think the Bible has

  922. lots of different

  923. ways that it

  924. phrases this but the

  925. Bible is constantly

  926. trying to get us to

  927. see that there's two

  928. ways to live and in

  929. this particular case and

  930. it's going to sort of

  931. have a sort of an echo

  932. in the text one way to

  933. live is to strive for

  934. self justification to

  935. justify ourselves and

  936. justify ourselves before

  937. ourselves and before

  938. other people the other

  939. way to live is to live

  940. by humble faith in

  941. Jesus and receive in

  942. receiving and receive

  943. God's free gift of

  944. just of justification in

  945. other words that through

  946. Jesus God justifies us

  947. God completely and

  948. utterly justifies us he

  949. does it by grace as a

  950. gift through Jesus and

  951. we can add nothing to

  952. that justification it's

  953. all comes from God so

  954. some of you might say

  955. well George I like that

  956. message but I sure

  957. don't see it here in

  958. the text well here's

  959. where just sort of

  960. bear with me we have to

  961. do a little tiny bit of

  962. sort of inquiry to see

  963. why I say this so

  964. remember how the

  965. parable goes right and

  966. we all remember how it

  967. goes and we remember

  968. about the master

  969. commending the fellow

  970. excuse me the first

  971. thing is that the

  972. commending actually sort of

  973. funny type of thing now

  974. you all know that I I

  975. like if you come here to

  976. the church at all you

  977. know that I like movies

  978. that have like murders in

  979. them I like books that

  980. have murders or bank

  981. robberies and and all of

  982. that type like really bad

  983. people and all of that

  984. in fact the book that I

  985. just finished reading one

  986. of the things in the book

  987. was that there's a guy who

  988. sort of had his finger in

  989. all of the criminal

  990. activities that were going

  991. on in this large area and

  992. of course in that case

  993. there's lots of other

  994. criminals who sometimes

  995. try to encroach and take

  996. over part of the business

  997. and there's several times

  998. in the book where the guy

  999. says he's a criminal by

  1000. the way he's also a deacon

1001. in the local church but

  1002. that's a separate matter he

  1003. gets himself elected the

  1004. deacon on the deacon's

1005. board of his of his

  1006. Baptist church first

1007. Baptist of the of the area

  1008. but he's he's running

  1009. he's running prostitutes

  1010. he has a strip club he's

  1011. running drugs he's running

  1012. illegal weapons and does

1013. money laundering and he you

1014. know you get the idea this

1015. is a really really bad guy

1016. and but several times when

1017. people try to muscle in or

1018. do something else he says to

  1019. himself something like these

1020. words he says my aren't you

  1021. an industrious and clever

1022. fellow that's what he says

  1023. my aren't you a clever and

  1024. industrious fellow and then

1025. of course he goes and has the

1026. guy killed okay but but that's

1027. what he says he sort of

1028. admires the fact that the

1029. person who's trying to rip

1030. him off is trying to be as

1031. good a criminal as he is and

1032. so you know I would say that

1033. this commending of the of the

1034. guy at the end by the rich guy

  1035. isn't necessarily something if

1036. you sort of look at it from

1037. that point of view it's not

  1038. necessarily something

1039. especially when you then see

1040. what Jesus says but here's

1041. why it's all about self

  1042. justification the first thing

1043. is if you go back and look at

1044. verse 15 and you have

  1045. actually yeah verse 15

1046. actually we're going to go back

  1047. to a context thing we'll start

1048. at verse 1 look what it says

1049. here he also said to the

1050. disciples also said in other

1051. words this parable is linked to

1052. the parable before it in fact what

1053. you can imagine doing is that the

1054. first parable if you go back and

  1055. look at chapter 15 there's three

1056. parables and the one immediately

1057. before this is the parable of the

1058. prodigal son and so what you can

1059. imagine is that there's this

1060. conflict and there's all these

1061. Pharisees over here sorry I'm not

1062. picking on this side of the

1063. congregation okay the Pharisees are

1064. over here and and Jesus has his

1065. disciples behind him okay and in

1066. chapter 15 it's as if Jesus says

  1067. these three parables his

1068. disciples can hear him says these

1069. three parables concluding with the

1070. parable of the prodigal son and he

1071. says it to the Pharisees the

1072. religious people the spiritual people

1073. the elite people of the culture and

1074. then after he said these three

1075. parables he turns to the disciples

1076. the Pharisees are all still now behind

1077. Jesus they can hear what Jesus says to

1078. the disciples and Jesus tells them this

1079. disciple of the dishonest manager and

1080. then after he tells them the parable

1081. of the dishonest manager he goes on and

1082. tells them about which we'll look at in

1083. a moment about you know people you know

1084. if you're if you're dishonest and little

1085. you'll be dishonest and much if you're

1086. faithful and little you'll be faithful

1087. and much you can't serve God and mammon

1088. and as he finishes that what he hears

1089. behind him is the Pharisees the

1090. religious and the spiritual the elite

1091. the cultural elite the well-educated the

1092. powerful they sneer at Jesus they

1093. ridicule him they deride him for

1094. everything he said and Jesus turns now

1095. with his back to his disciples and looks

1096. at the Pharisees and says in verse 15

1097. you are those who justify yourselves

1098. before men but God knows your hearts for

1099. what is exalted among men is an

1100. abomination in the sight of God

1101. why were these people ridiculing Jesus

1102. for the prodigal son and the dishonest

1103. manager Jesus says that what led them to

1104. ridicule was because they believed in

1105. self-justification and the worship of

1106. money and he said anything all self

1107. justification is an attempt to exalt

1108. yourself and God finds it an abomination

1109. so the two parables are linked and

1110. actually if you think about it I don't

1111. know how well you know you folks know

1112. the parable of the prodigal son when you

1113. go home today maybe you can read it again

1114. and if you read the prodigal son and you

1115. read the story of the dishonest manager

1116. and you go from one parable to another

1117. you'll be surprised at the number of

1118. similarities in both cases there's a man

  1119. who's using somebody else's wealth and

1120. desires somebody else's wealth in both

1121. cases there's waste of the wealth in both

1122. cases there's sort of not only the desire

1123. for the wealth but the wasting of the

1124. wealth and in both cases after the wealth

1125. has been wasted there is either the threat

1126. or the reality of being reduced to a

1127. lower working class status and in both

1128. cases there is the worry that once the

1129. wealth is gone you're going to be

1130. friendless in both cases in both stories

1131. that's the same thing and in both stories

1132. the characters have a brain wave they go

1133. oh I got it oh I got it in both stories

1134. the prodigal son when he's feeding the

1135. the corn husks to the the not the corn husks

1136. he's just feeding the pods to the pigs and

1137. he says oh I got it the dishonest manager

1138. when he knows he's about to be fired going

1139. to be reduced to even lower than dicking

1140. ditches and begging he goes oh I got it and

1141. in both cases there I got it they have a

1142. strategy to move forward in both stories

1143. both stories very similar structure and

1144. but you see in the first story those of

1145. you if you go back and listen to my

1146. sermon on I think was the second Sunday

1147. in December you'll see that in the first

1148. story the prodigal God it's really a

1149. prodigal son it's really a story about God

1150. and and it's a story that God sees the

1151. son long before the son sees so this the

1152. son in humility decides his exit strategy

1153. is you know what I'm never gonna have any

1154. money anymore but what I really need is

1155. to be with my father I'd rather be home

1156. with my father and poor than anything else

1157. and so remember he prepares a speech he

1158. says you know I've been very bad I've

1159. wasted your money I'm no longer worthy

1160. to be called your son would you at least

1161. let me live at your house and work as a

1162. servant and that's his strategy and the

1163. story is that as he goes that the story

1164. is not fundamentally about his strategy

1165. although the strategy is fun very very

1166. important but the father who sees the

1167. son long before the son sees the father

1168. that the father crosses the distance

1169. between himself and the son and goes

1170. and embraces the son and welcomes the son

1171. and the son only says part of his little

1172. prepared speech before the father saying

1173. bring my bring the best robe which is his

1174. own robe and cover this guy and let's have

1175. a party because my son who is dead is alive

  1176. again

1177. and in the second story of the dishonest

1178. manager he says you know what how can

1179. there be an existence apart from money and how

1180. can I possibly have an existence apart from

1181. being seen as really being important how can

1182. there be any life worth living if I don't have

1183. money and I'm not important so I'm going to find some

1184. criminals and I'm going to hope that the

1185. parable by the way is incomplete the parable

1186. doesn't say whether at the end of this in the

1187. next step that the rich man says hmm aren't you a

1188. clever fellow okay kill him

1189. okay my servants go out whack him you know kneecap

1190. him you have no idea whether the the criminals are going to

1191. actually accept the guy that the parable is incomplete

1192. because it's not a moralistic thing it's not about

1193. moralism and principles it's about the fact that God looks at our

1194. heart and these two parables reveal radically different

1195. understandings of the human heart in the context of the living God

1196. in the prodigal son he humbly sets aside any type of self-justification

1197. and to his huge surprise and to our surprise we discover that God

1198. justifies and accepts the son in the last story the manager only desires

1199. desires to continue to have money be the center of his life and seek his own

1200. self-justification two radically different approaches and stories to life

1201. in the first story part of what is going on is all we see is that the father

1202. justifies the son and we don't realize that the parable is preparedness

1203. remember those of you who've been here other weeks

1204. that from chapter 9 on every single thing that happens in the gospel of Luke is

1205. Jesus regularly every chapter and a half or two chapters says to his disciples

1206. we're going to Jerusalem I'm going to Jerusalem to die

1207. I'm going to Jerusalem to die I'm going to Jerusalem to die keeps reminding people

1208. and when we read the gospel we have to remember that everything that's said is all in the context

1209. of Jesus going to Jerusalem to die and so at the time of the prodigal son we don't understand

1210. that how the son will be justified is is not merely by some degree of declaration by the father but that the

1211. that the this that ultimately my justification in yours comes by Jesus's finished work upon the cross

1212. that it will be the death of Jesus upon the cross that ultimately justifies you and me

1213. me accepting his finished work is what justifies me

1214. we don't know that I mean we know it because we know the story but when you're reading the story it's just preparing you for this

1215. so the Bible is setting before us two different ways

1216. the one way is to strive for self-justification

1217. or by humble faith in Jesus receive God's free gift of justification

1218. well some of you are saying well what about the money aspect

1219. and what about how does it all end with verse 9 and all of that other stuff

1220. and and is is the Bible now is Jesus saying that money is like dirty

1221. like George isn't that sort of what those priests said to the Quebecois

1222. for many many generations or at least I mean whether it's true or not I don't know

1223. just in in in for many people when they think about it that's what they believe happened

1224. I'm not saying it did I just it's what they believe happened

1225. that um I'm not saying that they're wrong either

1226. I I don't know enough about Quebecois history to know whether it's a fair depiction

1227. but are is this just is this why that the the priests in the in the church

1228. in Quebec they would tell people that money is dirty

1229. and so they shouldn't seek to make money and they shouldn't seek promotions and ambitions

1230. and that allowed all these Anglican and Baptist and United Church Anglophones

1231. to get all the rich positions

1232. is that I George is still a bit confused

1233. well we're going to look at it but the first thing we have to understand is

1234. is something about what it means to be justified by Jesus

1235. when we put our when in repentance we turn to Jesus

1236. and we say father I'm I'm no longer worthy to be called your son or your daughter

  1237. I cannot justify myself

  1238. I I cannot exalt myself

1239. that whole project comes to an end

1240. all I can do is just hope and trust that what your son has done for us on the cross

1241. that you will justify me in him

1242. that you will do this by grace

1243. out of love and mercy for me

1244. you know father how divided my heart is

1245. you know that one moment I think I want to be like Billy Graham

1246. the next minute I want to be like Bruce Willis

1247. you know that on one on one moment I want to be faithful

1248. the next moment I want to be like Hugh Hefner

1249. you know that you know all those you know these terrible

1250. you know how father you know everything going on inside of me

  1251. I cannot justify myself

1252. I all I can do is come to you for mercy

1253. and trust that you will justify me

  1254. and have justified me

1255. through what Jesus has done for me on the cross

1256. that you will not weigh my merits

1257. you will only pardon my offenses

1258. and I come to you

  1259. I come to you

1260. and what happens after we're justified

1261. well that's what we have to understand

1262. that's what Jesus is talking about in the text

  1263. it's what happens in verses 9 and 10 and 11 and 12 and 13

  1264. it's I put it this way

1265. when I am justified by God

1266. my life begins to bear fruit for his glory

1267. when we really have been justified by God

1268. our lives start to bear fruit for his glory

1269. let's look at the text

1270. and see how it how it works itself out a little bit

1271. and then we'll talk just in closing a little bit

  1272. how's my time

1273. we'll talk in closing just a tiny little bit about money

  1274. I've gone on a long time

  1275. hopefully I haven't lost you

  1276. look at verse

  1277. so verse 8

1278. the master commended the dishonest manager

  1279. for his shrewdness

1280. it's the end of the parable

1281. now Jesus begins to comment

1282. for the sons of this world

  1283. are more shrewd

1284. in dealing with their own generation

1285. than the sons of light

1286. and the word shrewd there

  1287. in the Old Testament

  1288. the Hebrew Old Testament

  1289. was early on

  1290. before Jesus' time

  1291. translated into Greek

1292. and so often in fact

  1293. many people believe

1294. that most of the time

1295. when the apostles were reading the Bible

1296. they were reading the Greek version of the Bible

  1297. most of the time

1298. and the word in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

1299. if you know that story about the serpent

1300. and the word in Greek

1301. that they use to translate how the serpent is

1302. is the same word that's used here

  1303. in other words

1304. remember when it says about the serpent

1305. that the serpent was more subtle

  1306. than other creatures

1307. more shrewd than other creatures

  1308. that's the word that's used here

  1309. it's not a compliment

1310. to be said that you're like

1311. the serpent in the Garden of Eden

  1312. that's not something

  1313. that you should say

  1314. whoa

1315. boy that's off my bucket list

1316. I've always desired to be compared

1317. to the serpent in the Garden of Eden

1318. who leads all of mankind astray

1319. Jesus is commenting upon the fact

1320. that you're dealing with a story here

  1321. that's all about people

1322. who are all consumed with money

1323. the rich man and the manager

  1324. and the creditors

1325. they're all consumed with money

  1326. money is their God

1327. but he's going to make a shocking thing

1328. he's going to say the fact

1329. that the fact of the matter is

1330. is that even though these people

1331. are all consumed with money

1332. that's all that consumes them

  1333. yet you know what

1334. at least they pursue this

  1335. with diligence

1336. so how should we then live

1337. if even thieves and criminals

  1338. pursue their end

  1339. with diligence

  1340. does it mean

1341. that when you have received

  1342. the justification

  1343. that comes from me

1344. that you don't have to pursue anything

  1345. if thieves understand

1346. that they should pursue money

1347. now that I have justified you

  1348. shouldn't you pursue something

  1349. what should you pursue

  1350. verse 9

1351. he begins to talk about it

  1352. and I tell you

  1353. make friends for yourselves

1354. by means of unrighteous wealth

1355. I'll talk about that in a moment

1356. so that when it fails

  1357. they may receive you

  1358. into the eternal dwellings

  1359. and the word fails

  1360. there is actually

  1361. it's an interesting word

  1362. it's a good word

  1363. but the original word

  1364. in the original language

1365. is the word that we get

  1366. the word eclipse from

  1367. in other words

  1368. when money is eclipsed

  1369. for you

  1370. remember he's talking

  1371. to the disciples

  1372. money

1373. you live in a world

  1374. where money exists

  1375. but you know what

  1376. one day

  1377. money

  1378. will be eclipsed

  1379. for you

  1380. so he said

  1381. you know

  1382. using the thing

  1383. as the guy

  1384. in the parable

  1385. was hoping

1386. that by his criminal activity

  1387. he would make friends

  1388. and so what Jesus

  1389. is saying

  1390. is eternal dwellings

  1391. the word for dwelling

  1392. there

1393. which is a good word

  1394. it's the same word

  1395. used for tabernacle

  1396. and it's a place

1397. where God meets with you

  1398. and he said

  1399. you know

  1400. when you're justified

  1401. by what I've done

1402. for you on the cross

  1403. where's your destination

  1404. now?

  1405. you're going home

  1406. and home

1407. is to be with God

1408. to live in the new heaven

  1409. and the new earth

  1410. that's what my justification

  1411. does for you

  1412. that's your new destination

  1413. you know

  1414. you sojourn in Canada

  1415. but your true home

  1416. is heaven

  1417. and that's where you're going

  1418. and if that's where you're going

  1419. use

  1420. and here Jesus takes

  1421. the argument

  1422. from other people

  1423. you know

1424. like a lot of times

  1425. religious and spiritual people

  1426. will say

1427. we don't want to talk about money

  1428. money is unclean

  1429. it's dirty

  1430. you know

  1431. it's worldly

  1432. it's carnal

  1433. it's unimportant

1434. you can't take it with you

1435. and there's all this talk

1436. of sort of despising money

  1437. but inwardly

  1438. we still like it

1439. and we like to have more of it

  1440. and we get upset

1441. and we go back to the cashier

1442. if she didn't give us enough change

1443. or he didn't give us enough change

  1444. because you know

1445. we can talk about money

  1446. being unclean

  1447. and carnal

  1448. and unspiritual

  1449. and unworthy

  1450. and non-eternal

  1451. and all that

1452. but we live in a world with money

1453. still has a hold on us

  1454. and Jesus is saying

  1455. okay folks

1456. you're going to be justified

1457. by what I've done for you

  1458. on the cross

1459. you're going to receive that

1460. but once you're justified by me

1461. you're going to bear fruit

1462. and part of how you're going to bear fruit

1463. is you're now going to start to understand

  1464. that you're going

  1465. to this future

1466. and this future is guaranteed

1467. so use your worldly resources

  1468. in such a way

  1469. that fits

  1470. with your destination

  1471. the dishonest manager

  1472. he had no destination

  1473. other than money

  1474. he had no destination

  1475. other than being important

1476. he didn't really care ultimately

  1477. about any particular person

  1478. he didn't care

1479. which one of these creditors

  1480. took him in

  1481. because he ultimately

  1482. didn't care about people

  1483. all he cared about

  1484. was himself

1485. and he cared about money

1486. that's what he cared about

1487. and that was his destination

1488. and he pursued that diligently

  1489. and Jesus said

  1490. if these guys

1491. can pursue these things diligently

1492. you're going to be justified

  1493. by me

1494. when you put your faith

  1495. and trust in me

  1496. now

  1497. you're going

  1498. to live with God

1499. and if that's your destination

  1500. use the resources

  1501. that you have

  1502. in such a way

  1503. that fits

  1504. with where you're going

1505. and then he goes on

1506. and he talks about it

  1507. one who is faithful

  1508. you know

  1509. now that

  1510. okay

  1511. well

  1512. okay Jesus

1513. how do I do that

1514. like what do I do

  1515. if that's my destination

1516. like what do I have to understand

  1517. you know

  1518. and Jesus says

1519. well one who is faithful

  1520. verse 10

  1521. in a very little

1522. is also faithful in much

  1523. you know

1524. money is in a sense

  1525. a very little thing

1526. it's going to be eclipsed

  1527. but you know

  1528. if you're not faithful

  1529. in these little

  1530. tiny little things

1531. how are you going to be faithful

  1532. in big things

1533. like who's going to believe you

1534. like part of the fruit

  1535. that's going to come

  1536. from justification

1537. is you're going to have

1538. a desire built up within you

1539. that you need to develop

  1540. habits around

1541. to desire to be faithful

  1542. even in little things

  1543. why

  1544. because

  1545. one

1546. and one who is dishonest

  1547. and very little

  1548. is also dishonest

  1549. and much

  1550. and what else

  1551. does Jesus say

1552. if then you have not

  1553. been faithful

  1554. in the unrighteous wealth

  1555. he's taking their language

  1556. from them

  1557. who will entrust you

  1558. to the true riches

  1559. the riches

  1560. that eclipse

  1561. money

1562. and if you have not

  1563. been faithful

1564. in that which is another's

  1565. because

  1566. you know

1567. at the end of the day

1568. the Bible is going to teach

  1569. that we're all just

  1570. managers of resources

1571. we don't really own anything

  1572. God puts things

  1573. under our care

  1574. but you know

  1575. when we die

  1576. it all goes back

  1577. in the box

  1578. goes to somebody else

  1579. and ultimately

  1580. it's God's

1581. and you have to understand

  1582. I have to understand

  1583. that the money's ultimately

  1584. not my money

  1585. it's God's money

  1586. it's not my resources

  1587. it's God's resources

  1588. I didn't do anything

  1589. to create my DNA

  1590. and if my DNA

  1591. means I have a certain

  1592. type of IQ

1593. and a certain type of health

1594. and God has blessed me

  1595. with you know

  1596. a wife and kids

  1597. and living in Ottawa

  1598. and he's given me

  1599. these resources

  1600. gosh

1601. I was born in this country

  1602. I don't know why

1603. God had me born here

  1604. rather than in

  1605. you know

  1606. Sri Lanka

  1607. or in this

  1608. you know

  1609. in slums of Shanghai

  1610. I didn't do anything

  1611. to accomplish that

1612. and God has given me

  1613. some resources

  1614. he's given you

  1615. maybe lesser resources

  1616. some of you

  1617. is giving more resources

  1618. but whatever resources

  1619. that God has put

  1620. put in your control

1621. he's given them to you

  1622. to manage them

  1623. for him

  1624. he's given you

  1625. to them

  1626. to manage

  1627. for him

1628. and if you have not

  1629. been faithful

1630. in that which is in others

  1631. who will give you

1632. that which is your own

  1633. no servant can serve

  1634. two masters

  1635. for either he will

  1636. hate the one

  1637. and love the other

1638. or he will be devoted

  1639. to the one

  1640. and despise the other

  1641. you cannot serve

  1642. God and money

  1643. the Pharisees

1644. who are lovers of money

  1645. heard all these things

  1646. and they ridiculed Jesus

  1647. they sneered at him

  1648. they despised him

  1649. why?

  1650. you are those

  1651. who justify yourselves

  1652. before men

1653. but God knows your hearts

  1654. for what is exalted

  1655. among men

  1656. is an abomination

1657. in the sight of God

  1658. two final points

1659. just to try to bring it home

1660. the first one is this

  1661. verse 4

  1662. Jesus asks me

  1663. will I manage money

  1664. in service of money

1665. or will I manage money

1666. in service of the living God?

  1667. will I manage money

  1668. in service of money

1669. or will I manage money

1670. in service of the living God?

  1671. see the issue is

1672. we all live in a world

  1673. where money exists

  1674. right?

1675. we all live in a world

  1676. like that

1677. and we can't just pretend

  1678. that it's unspiritual

1679. so we don't have to bother

  1680. with it

  1681. because all that does

1682. is it just allows greed

  1683. and envy

1684. and to fester within us

  1685. and it allows us

  1686. to be ungenerous

1687. and hoarding types of spirits

1688. just to grow within us

  1689. to start to think

1690. when we think of it

  1691. it's just underneath us

  1692. and beneath us

  1693. it just allows us

  1694. to exalt ourselves

  1695. and Jesus says

  1696. listen the issue is

1697. in the throne of your heart

  1698. who's on the throne

  1699. of your heart

  1700. and on the throne

  1701. of your heart

1702. the center of who you are

  1703. for many of us

  1704. it's myself

  1705. and money

1706. and other idols as well

1707. it might be the idols

  1708. of tribe

  1709. or of nation

  1710. or of job

  1711. or career

  1712. or whatever it is

  1713. but there's a host

  1714. of idols

  1715. sitting on the throne

  1716. of our heart

  1717. and the throne

  1718. of our heart

  1719. should only have

  1720. one person

  1721. sitting on it

  1722. and that should be

  1723. the living God

  1724. it should be Jesus

1725. who's died to redeem us

  1726. and to restore us

1727. to that which we were

  1728. created for

  1729. because we were created

  1730. to have God

1731. at the throne of our hearts

  1732. our hearts are restless

1733. till they rest in him

  1734. and Jesus says

  1735. you can end up

  1736. serving money

  1737. managing money

1738. but really what you're doing

  1739. you're managing money

  1740. because you worship money

  1741. which means that

  1742. money manages you

  1743. and money will fail

  1744. one second after death

  1745. Bill Gates

  1746. and the poorest person

  1747. in Ottawa

  1748. one second after

  1749. they both die

1750. if they die at the same time

  1751. one second after death

  1752. they have the same

  1753. financial resources

  1754. so the issue isn't

  1755. do you manage money

  1756. the issue is

  1757. who are you managing

  1758. money for

  1759. money

  1760. himself

  1761. or the living God

  1762. one final thing

  1763. Jesus calls me

  1764. to manage the resources

  1765. under my care

  1766. for the glory

  1767. of the living God

  1768. Jesus calls me

  1769. to manage the resources

  1770. under my care

  1771. for the glory

  1772. of the living God

  1773. you see that's why

  1774. there's nothing wrong

1775. if God has granted you

1776. the ability to start a business

  1777. start a business

  1778. bless the city

1779. you know one of the ways

1780. that we bless the city

1781. that we help the poor

  1782. is by starting businesses

  1783. that create employment

  1784. for people

  1785. and you know

  1786. and you know

  1787. and you know

  1788. if he's giving you

1789. some type of a vision

1790. to start a dance troupe

  1791. or something like that

1792. those are some you know

  1793. resources that you have

1794. or to paint beautiful pictures

  1795. or to make films

  1796. or just you know

1797. God calls you into marriage

1798. and maybe you end up

  1799. deciding that you're going

1800. to have a little bit

  1801. less money

  1802. so one of you

  1803. can stay home

1804. to care for the kids

  1805. that hopefully God

  1806. will bless you with

  1807. and you know

  1808. the thing is

1809. is that these are all

  1810. resources that God

1811. has put under your care

1812. and you're to manage them

  1813. not thinking about

1814. how can I maximize money

  1815. in service of money

  1816. but you be wise

  1817. and work hard

  1818. and seek promotions

1819. if God has granted you

  1820. that ability

  1821. to seek promotions

  1822. and manage those resources

  1823. but you manage them

  1824. not to enthrone yourself

1825. and not to enthrone money

  1826. but you manage them

1827. for the glory of God

  1828. and that's why

  1829. you see

1830. that it's part of that

  1831. that just as well

  1832. as you manage

  1833. the resources

  1834. and maybe cause

  1835. the resources

  1836. to thrive

  1837. and grow

1838. but at the same time

  1839. because

  1840. you're not worshipping money

1841. that's why you give money

  1842. to the poor

1843. and why you give money

  1844. to the church

  1845. it's why

  1846. the spiritual discipline

  1847. of tithing

  1848. is so important

  1849. for a Christian

  1850. that there's at least

  1851. a bit of a benchmark

  1852. in the Bible

  1853. put about

  1854. okay well

  1855. how is it

  1856. that I show

  1857. that I'm going to

  1858. dethrone money

  1859. as the thing

  1860. which drives

  1861. my managing of money

1862. well one of the ways

  1863. you do it

1864. is you give money away

  1865. oh no

  1866. I'd rather have

  1867. a spiritual thing

  1868. like I'd rather have

  1869. a spiritual experience

  1870. in church

  1871. and God says

  1872. no no no

  1873. you can't dethrone money

  1874. in your life

1875. unless you give money away

  1876. and you know

  1877. you can trust me

1878. I'm going to provide for you

  1879. but you've got to

  1880. give money away

  1881. and we're suggesting

  1882. some people

  1883. like Mother Teresa

1884. she had to give away

  1885. everything

  1886. some of us

  1887. maybe God's going to

  1888. call us that

  1889. that we have to

  1890. give away everything

  1891. maybe it's more than

  1892. 10%

  1893. but that's how we

  1894. dethrone money

  1895. in our lives

  1896. that's how we

  1897. manage money

  1898. in such a way

  1899. that we show

  1900. that we're living

1901. to the glory of God

  1902. tithing is such

  1903. an important

  1904. spiritual discipline

  1905. connected to this text

  1906. to help us

  1907. to understand

  1908. how to live

  1909. but build your business

  1910. get the promotions

1911. look out for interest rates

  1912. you know

  1913. if you have

  1914. credit card debt

  1915. you know

  1916. talk to somebody

  1917. who can help you

  1918. put all that

1919. under a line of credit

  1920. with a lower interest

  1921. you know

  1922. because

  1923. it's not a particular sign

  1924. of being very spiritual

1925. to give lots of money

  1926. to credit card companies

  1927. when you can

  1928. you know

1929. that money can be kept

  1930. for yourself

1931. you can give it to the poor

1932. you can give it to the church

1933. like there's lots of better uses

  1934. for that money

  1935. but manage your money

  1936. manage your resources

  1937. use your energy

  1938. use your mind

  1939. get the degrees

  1940. get the promotion

  1941. manage your resources

  1942. but don't do it

1943. for the exaltation of yourself

  1944. don't do it

  1945. to justify yourself

1946. in the eyes of men

  1947. don't do it

  1948. to prove

  1949. to your parents

  1950. or your teacher

  1951. or your coach

1952. that they were wrong for you

  1953. you have the opportunity

  1954. I have the opportunity

  1955. to be justified

  1956. by the finished work

1957. of Jesus upon the cross

1958. so that at the end

  1959. of our life

  1960. when we die

  1961. that which we can

  1962. begin to know now

  1963. we will hear

  1964. at the end

  1965. where God

  1966. the creator

  1967. the living God

  1968. says to me

  1969. George

1970. fill in your own name

  1971. I am so glad

1972. you've come to see me

  1973. and be with me

  1974. face to face

  1975. I've been looking

  1976. forward to this

  1977. come

  1978. I welcome you

  1979. into my kingdom

  1980. there's no greater

  1981. justification

  1982. than that which

  1983. comes from God

1984. so live for his glory

  1985. receive that

  1986. which he gives

  1987. he'll give you

1988. it in such a way

1989. that you start to bear fruit

  1990. live for his glory

  1991. please stand

  1992. bow our heads

  1993. in prayer

  1994. dear God

  1995. please deliver me

  1996. from self-justification

  1997. please deliver our church

  1998. from self-justification

  1999. please deliver every person

  2000. who is here

  2001. from striving

  2002. for self-justification

  2003. deliver us

  2004. father

  2005. from all of our

  2006. striving

  2007. to exalt ourselves

  2008. father

  2009. thank you for Jesus

2010. thank you for what he did

2011. for us on the cross

  2012. thank you that

  2013. you know

  2014. that he knew

  2015. how imperfect

  2016. and how fickle

  2017. and insecure

  2018. we are

2019. and still you loved us

  2020. still you love us

  2021. still Jesus died

2022. on the cross for us

  2023. thank you father

  2024. that he knows us

  2025. so perfectly

  2026. and yet he died

  2027. for us

  2028. thank you father

  2029. that in him

  2030. when we receive him

  2031. that we are justified

  2032. in him

  2033. that he justifies us

  2034. that you justifies us

  2035. father

2036. help us to be gripped

  2037. with this message

  2038. of the gospel

  2039. and what Jesus does

2040. for us on the cross

  2041. help us father

  2042. to be gripped

  2043. by the justification

  2044. that comes from you

  2045. and help us father

  2046. to so live

2047. with our home in heaven

  2048. bearing fruit

  2049. for your glory

  2050. help us to manage

  2051. our resources well

  2052. in a way

  2053. that we can contribute

  2054. to the furtherance

  2055. of your kingdom

  2056. and bring you glory

  2057. it's your resources

  2058. it's your money

  2059. I surrender all

2060. in Jesus' name we pray

  2061. Amen
