  1. Father, sometimes your word talks about things that we don't want to talk about and we don't want to think about.

  2. And sometimes your word says things that just about everything within us disagrees with.

  3. And sometimes your word says things that we might agree with,

  4. but we don't think anybody around us that we know at work or in our neighborhood or maybe in our family would agree with.

  5. And Father, we confess before you that it's very easy for us in these situations to not want to hear your word at all,

  6. to skip over it, to think about something that pleases us or chooses, that pleases us.

  7. But Father, you are God, the true and living God, the creator of all things, the sustainer of all things,

  8. and you are a God who speaks.

  9. And you have spoken to us and you speak to us.

  10. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would gently but deeply come into our minds and come into our hearts

  11. and come into our wills, come into our bodies, come into who we are,

  12. that your Holy Spirit would fall upon us with gentle power,

  13. that we might hear your word and receive your word,

  14. and that your word would enter into us to the end that we would bear much fruit in our daily lives for your glory.

  15. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  16. Please be seated.

  17. Amen.

  18. So, some sort of strong texts.

  19. Here's the first thing.

  20. So I'll, if you're a guest here, by the way, first of all, if you're a guest here this morning,

  21. we always have some Bibles at the front.

  22. If you forgot your Bible, you're welcome to come and borrow a Bible or actually take it as a gift.

  23. You don't have to bring it back.

  24. You can take it home with you if you want.

  25. And we're going to look at those Bible texts.

  26. And what we do at this church is we preach through books of the Bible.

  27. So it wasn't as if, George, you know, that's my name's George if you're a guest.

  28. It's not as if I thought one day, what could I do to really sort of just lay a big guilt bomb on a whole pile of people?

  29. So why do I pick this text?

  30. Because that will really, you know, thin the congregation, thin the herd or something like that.

  31. No, we preach through the Bible.

  32. We preach through books of the Bible.

  33. And this was the next text.

  34. And so we're going to look at it.

  35. And here's the thing, which if you don't get anything else, and I apologize that event after event after event happened that I wasn't able to get my points to Andrew.

  36. So if you go on the webpage tomorrow in the afternoon, hopefully, if you need help with the points, they'll be up there on the computer or webpage.

  37. But here's the thing that struck me as I'm trying to wrestle with these texts.

  38. And it's as if the Holy Spirit spoke to me about a fundamental heart issue that only maybe I'm not always aware of, but it's a fundamental heart issue in terms of how I approach the Bible.

  39. And maybe I'm vastly more wicked than you, but I think it's a common heart problem.

  40. Maybe it's always been a common problem, but I think it's especially a problem in an affluent, well-educated city like Ottawa.

  41. And here's the heart issue.

  42. The true God who truly speaks is not a puzzle to solve so that I can be safe and flourish.

  43. I'll say that again.

  44. It's too bad I don't have it up on the screen unless Andrew sort of types it while I speak, which would be sort of funny.

  45. The true God who truly speaks is not a puzzle to solve so that I can be safe and flourish.

  46. And you might say, George, why on earth would you say something like that?

  47. Like, that's not a very Christian thing to say.

  48. You know, we're just supposed to believe God at his word.

  49. We're just sort of to take it and all that.

  50. But, you know, if I think about it, when I was sort of wrestling with this text, studying different commentaries,

  51. not only commentaries that have been written relatively recently,

  52. but commentaries that have been written other centuries where there were other types of perspectives on it.

  53. And, you know, it's very easy for us to try to turn these passages into something that will be safe for us.

  54. As if it's a type of puzzle.

  55. And if we can just sort of solve the puzzle, then, okay, then we can live with the text.

  56. And we can be safe with the text.

  57. And we can be safe with God.

  58. And we can flourish because we're safe.

  59. And, but you know what?

  60. That's not who God is.

  61. And it's not who we are.

  62. In fact, texts like this reveal how we have a God project at work in our own lives.

  63. And that this God project that's at work in our own lives means that we sort of want to set the terms of what God will be like.

  64. And we want to set the terms for what he's going to speak.

  65. And the terms about what he can and cannot tell us.

  66. And we want to set the terms.

  67. We want to have a type of negotiation with God to set these terms up.

  68. And so that once we know the terms of the deal and the terms of the arrangement,

  69. then we can go and we can do the different things that we want to do.

  70. And in fact, that's often what religion does.

  71. Even Christianity, which has been in a sense hijacked by religion.

  72. It creates, you know, like maybe in some churches, there's a whole pile of rituals and rules around Sunday morning,

  73. which means that you have virtually no rules for the rest of the week.

  74. That's very, very handy.

  75. You know, we've worked out some rules with God.

  76. And we agree with these rules with God.

  77. Okay, God, those are good rules.

  78. We agree with them.

  79. And now that we've agreed to these rules, I can go, whoa, okay, God is sort of, now we have God sort of settled.

  80. You know, like an awkward guest who comes to a dinner party.

  81. We have him or her settled.

  82. This is the awkward guest, not God.

  83. We have God settled.

  84. And now we can get on with, and it's not going to be too disruptive to us having a good dinner party, us having a good life.

  85. And often religion functions like that.

  86. And, in fact, people, and I don't mean to insult anybody.

  87. I'm Canadian, so I don't want to insult anybody.

  88. But often when we say that we're spiritual, not religious, that's often sort of what we mean.

  89. We have a different type of negotiation with God so that we can have God sort of be a certain type of way so that now that he, if we're spiritual, not religious,

  90. we might not know if God's a he or she or an it.

  91. But I'm not saying that to make fun, but it's just a different type of language.

  92. And now he or she or it is sort of settled, and it's all part of our, in fact, now God is actually part of our adornment,

  93. how in our project to flourish and to be safe.

  94. And texts like this that we just read a few moments ago that we're going to read again in a couple of seconds,

  95. it challenges our project at determining how we are safe and how we will flourish,

  96. how I will be safe, how I will flourish, and where I begin and where I end,

  97. and how God is going to fit in with who I am and the choices I want to make and the choices I have made.

  98. And so I want to have God safe.

  99. And so when I come to a text like this, I approach it, you approach it like a puzzle.

  100. And it's a puzzle that if we just click it and shape it the right way,

  101. God's safe.

  102. I can be safe. I can flourish.

  103. Now, I know some religious and spiritual people will use texts like this as a club to bang other people over the head with

  104. and to try to belittle people.

  105. And that's another, that's a separate problem.

  106. That's probably not as much of a problem with most of the people who are here.

  107. Most of us are probably not looking for a Bible text to run into a crowd,

  108. being able to whack people with to make them uncomfortable.

  109. That's probably not our temptation.

  110. I don't know you all.

  111. Maybe some of you will hear that is your temptation.

  112. You need to repent.

  113. It's a different problem.

  114. But for most of us, God is a puzzle.

  115. How did I put it?

  116. The true God who truly speaks is not a puzzle to solve so that I can be safe and flourish.

  117. That's not what God is.

  118. God is, and we're going to see this in a moment,

  119. that God is the creator, he's the sustainer, he's the end of our longings,

  120. he's the end of our yearnings, because he's our helper,

  121. he's the one who redeems us through the death of Jesus upon the cross,

  122. that we can appropriate what he's done purely by faith, not weighing our merits.

  123. That everything about God speaking and all of his words are all designed so that we will come to Jesus.

  124. And when we come to Jesus in faith to trust him as our savior,

  125. and we now receive him as our king,

  126. and we start to learn to live in his kingdom,

  127. that when we start to learn to do that,

  128. we reclaim the authentic humanity that God has intended for us for,

  129. whereby we can be free.

  130. No longer battered by idols and myths and demons,

  131. false gods,

  132. false utopias,

  133. everything in God's word is to funnel us to Jesus,

  134. to realize that we need to accept him as our savior and our Lord,

  135. and that once we give our lives to him as our savior,

  136. that once we start to follow him,

  137. even God's hardest teachings are for us to understand what it means to truly be human,

  138. to truly be a creature in the presence of the living God,

  139. who desires to live with us and be with us,

  140. so that we will go from one degree of glory to another for all eternity.

  141. The God who speaks is the end of our longings and the end of our yearnings.

  142. He's not a puzzle to be solved so we can be safe and flourish.

  143. If you get nothing else out of the sermon, I hope you get that.

  144. Let's look at the text.

  145. George had made some bold claims.

  146. Let's look at the text.

  147. So if you get your Bible out, it's Luke chapter 16,

    Luke 16:16

  148. verses 16 to the end.

  149. We're going to read the whole bit that I read before.

  150. We'll read that all before I'm finished.

  151. At different times, we'll stop and sort of look at the text

  152. and try to draw out from it what the Bible is saying.

  153. But remember, Luke 16, verses 16 to 31,

    Luke 16:16–31

  154. remember throughout all of it is that in our heart,

  155. because this is one of the things about Jesus,

  156. religion and spirituality, we'll talk about all sorts of things,

  157. but Jesus always attacks the heart.

  158. He always speaks into the heart,

  159. and the Bible understands the heart to be the center of who we are.

  160. Underneath all of our masks, all of our pretensions,

  161. all of our longings, all of our yearnings, all of our fears,

  162. the good, the bad, the ugly, everything in between,

  163. the very center of who we are,

  164. Jesus always goes right to the heart in the context of the living God,

  165. and that's what he's talking about here.

  166. So the text begins like this, verse 16 of chapter 16.

  167. Jesus says,

  168. The law and the prophets were until John.

  169. That's John the Baptist.

  170. Since then, the good news of the kingdom of God is preached,

  171. and everyone forces his way into it.

  172. A better translation would be,

  173. many of your versions would have sort of little notes underneath about it.

  174. It might be better to say,

  175. and everyone is forcefully urged into it.

  176. In other words, we urge with the best of our reason,

  177. the best of our winsomeness,

  178. the best of our analogies,

  179. the best of our prayers,

  180. the best of what we can do,

  181. that we try to spare nothing at talking about the good news.

  182. Every analogy we can think of.

  183. That's what Jesus is talking about.

  184. Then verse 17.

  185. But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away

  186. than for one dot, one stroke of the law.

  187. And here he's referring to what we now call the Old Testament,

  188. to become void.

  189. So here's the first thing.

  190. With Jesus in his kingdom,

  191. I will learn to listen to the living God.

  192. That's what this text is.

  193. Underneath this text,

  194. we want to try to get a positive lesson from it.

  195. What does it mean?

  196. We're going to talk about this more in a few minutes.

  197. But what does it mean when we come to Jesus

  198. and accept him as our Savior

  199. and we desire to follow him as our Lord?

  200. Well, one of the things it means

  201. is that we accept him as our Savior

  202. and we now just don't have a one-on-one relationship with him.

  203. We do have a personal relationship with Jesus,

  204. but it's a communal relationship as well.

  205. It's communal because he calls us into his kingdom

  206. and he's the king.

  207. And what's one of the things that will happen to us

  208. in his kingdom?

  209. Well, as we draw closer to Jesus,

  210. we will learn, he will teach us,

  211. we will learn, the Holy Spirit will teach us

  212. to desire to listen to the living God

  213. and to learn to listen to the living God

  214. who actually speaks.

  215. You know, one of the things in our culture,

  216. many people in our culture are very terrified

  217. with this idea that God speaks.

  218. They think, one of the persons I talk to regularly

  219. in coffee shops, he says,

  220. you know, George, George, George, George,

  221. you know, how on earth can you possibly think

  222. that something that was written 2,500 years ago

  223. or 2,000 years ago,

  224. that that can just continue to speak into our lives?

  225. How on earth can you possibly believe that?

  226. You know, science continues, philosophy continues,

  227. literature, poetry, art continues, technology continues,

  228. everything continues and develops.

  229. Isn't it wiser to get the most recent thing?

  230. And isn't the most recent thing

  231. just going to have to be better?

  232. And it's one of the things he says to me.

  233. And one of the things I try to say to him is,

  234. what if there is a God who really does exist

  235. who actually speaks to us?

  236. Like, what if it is that there is a God

  237. who's created all things and sustains all things,

  238. and this God actually speaks in words

  239. that can be translated into the heart language

  240. of every people group?

  241. Because that's ultimately the claim of the Bible.

  242. See, why am I saying that?

  243. Look at the game.

  244. When Jesus says, verse 16,

  245. the law and the prophets were until John,

  246. but since then the good news of the kingdom is preached

  247. and everyone is talked about it.

  248. And then he says,

  249. it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away

  250. than for one dot of the law to become void.

  251. What Jesus is saying here is that God has spoken

  252. through the law and he's spoken through the prophets.

  253. And because he is the one who ultimately speaks

  254. through the law and speaks through the prophets,

  255. then the words that have come out

  256. are the words that he wants to have there.

  257. And he stands behind these words

  258. as their guarantor, so to speak.

  259. And because they continue to always

  260. and perpetually be his words,

  261. that he chose to speak to our human race

  262. in a public manner that all who can read

  263. or all who can hear can come to hear and understand.

  264. It's why it's because God is the ultimate author

  265. and the guarantor of these words,

  266. that these words have their potential power in our lives,

  267. that they can speak into our lives,

  268. that they can speak to our heart,

  269. the center of who we are.

  270. They can speak to our heart and our heart's longing

  271. for things of the culture and things of our heart

  272. and things of the world

  273. and even maybe potentially things of the devil,

  274. as well as good things that we long and yearn for.

  275. But that these words are words that speak into our heart

  276. about things that are true.

  277. And that's why Jesus says that the word void

  278. can also be translated as fail,

  279. that these words will continue on and on and on and on.

  280. And we're going to see in a couple of weeks

  281. when we go to Luke chapter 21,

    Luke 21 chapter mention

  282. that Jesus says his own words will have that type of power.

  283. And only if it's ultimately God who is the speaker

  284. behind and in the words can something like this be true.

  285. And that's what Jesus is teaching us.

  286. And so the words of God aren't words

  287. that are now going to limit our freedom,

  288. but in a sense unleash freedom and propel freedom.

  289. They're words that will start to form our desires,

  290. our longings, our yearnings, our understandings,

  291. the categories by which we think

  292. as we think about everything else.

  293. Because God made human beings to think

  294. and to write poetry and to compose music

  295. and to develop laws

  296. and to speak to children

  297. and to speak to wives and husbands

  298. and mothers and fathers and neighbors.

  299. And he designed us to be curious and ask questions.

  300. And so God reveals this true truth,

  301. not that we will then somehow only read the words of this book

  302. and completely ignore science

  303. and completely ignore poetry

  304. and art and creativity,

  305. but to help us to understand

  306. that we are creatures,

  307. fallen creatures in a fallen world,

  308. that God still exists.

  309. And his words come into our life

  310. to start to help us to orient ourselves

  311. and ground ourselves

  312. so that we can think

  313. in a more completely fully human way

  314. and think and be curious.

  315. And, you know, maybe your thing isn't poetry,

  316. maybe it's physics,

  317. or maybe it's engineering,

  318. or maybe it's math,

  319. but to pursue that

  320. and always day by day

  321. coming back to the God who speaks

  322. and speaks preeminently through his word,

  323. but will speak into our lives.

  324. And that's what's behind this teaching of Jesus,

  325. that with Jesus in his kingdom,

  326. I will learn to listen to the living God.

  327. And as I learn to listen,

  328. as you learn to listen,

  329. as we learn to listen together to the living God,

  330. that he can form and reform our minds

  331. and our hearts and our wills and our souls.

  332. And as our minds and hearts and wills are reformed,

  333. it doesn't mean that our mind stops thinking

  334. and our will stops willing

  335. and our heart stops longing,

  336. but our mind can start to think

  337. in a less fallen way.

  338. And our hearts can long for beauty

  339. in a less fallen way.

  340. And our wills can will goodness

  341. in our lives

  342. and in the lives of our culture

  343. in a less fallen way.

  344. But we are redeemed

  345. to be creatures

  346. created by our creator,

  347. who we were meant to know

  348. and to love and to serve.

  349. And we were meant to do that

  350. not just by ourselves,

  351. but with others.

  352. And this text,

  353. just one other thing about it

  354. before I sort of go on,

  355. it's a profound refutation

  356. of Islam as well.

  357. And it's very important to catch this

  358. because many Christians

  359. think about the Bible

  360. the way Muslims think about the Koran.

  361. And if Christians think about the Bible

  362. the way Muslims think about the Koran,

  363. then Christians aren't thinking

  364. about the Bible truly.

  365. You see, in the Koran,

  366. the Islamic belief,

  367. and I hope I'm getting this accurate,

  368. if you're a Muslim

  369. who's come here this morning,

  370. my understanding is that

  371. God, Allah,

  372. speaks to Gabriel the angel.

  373. And Gabriel the angel

  374. remembers what God says,

  375. and then Gabriel speaks to Muhammad.

  376. And Muhammad remembers

  377. what the angel says,

  378. and Muhammad speaks.

  379. And other people,

  380. because Muhammad was illiterate,

  381. other people write down

  382. what Muhammad spoke.

  383. But it's all dictation.

  384. Gabriel takes dictation from God,

  385. Muhammad takes dictation from Gabriel,

  386. and the other writers

  387. take dictation from Muhammad.

  388. And it's like water through a pipe.

  389. It's just a conduit.

  390. And you'll notice here,

  391. and it's going to come up

  392. all the way through this text,

  393. that Jesus keeps referring

  394. to the law and the prophets.

  395. And he refers to Moses.

  396. And so he refers to the fact

  397. that there are many books in the Bible,

  398. that there are many human authors,

  399. that the books have

  400. different literary genres.

  401. And that the key of all the scriptures

  402. focusing on Jesus.

  403. But you see,

  404. it's very, very radically different

  405. for him to,

  406. for Jesus to say,

  407. you know,

  408. I know the fact that,

  409. you know,

  410. in his case,

  411. that there would be 39 books.

  412. He knew that there would be more books,

  413. as we'll see in a few weeks

  414. when we look at Luke chapter 21.

    Luke 21 chapter mention

  415. And that there,

  416. and he even calls them

  417. different genres,

  418. prophetic literature,

  419. and laws,

  420. instruction.

  421. So he recognizes different genres,

  422. that God chose,

  423. and God,

  424. the Bible,

  425. Jesus doesn't say

  426. this is the psychology

  427. that was going on

  428. in these different people.

  429. All he says

  430. is that Moses wrote

  431. and prophets wrote

  432. and they wrote

  433. in different genres

  434. and they wrote

  435. in different times

  436. and they wrote

  437. in different contexts

  438. and they wrote

  439. the way they were going to write.

  440. But at the end of the day,

  441. what stands behind the words

  442. is God

  443. who ultimately

  444. gets the words

  445. that he wanted

  446. to be written

  447. in the different genres,

  448. in the different times,

  449. by the different authors,

  450. with different agendas,

  451. and different senses

  452. of literary technique

  453. and form.

  454. And God uses

  455. all of these human things,

  456. respecting the freedom

  457. of the human authors,

  458. and without at all

  459. transgressing the freedom

  460. of the human authors,

  461. by the time

  462. the process is finished,

  463. the result is

  464. what God desired

  465. to have there.

  466. And so we,

  467. reading the Bible,

  468. now we read law like law,

  469. we read prophecy

  470. like prophecy,

  471. we read poetry

  472. like poetry,

  473. we read historical narrative

  474. like historical narrative,

  475. and we read it all

  476. within the context

  477. of Jesus

  478. who marks

  479. the change

  480. of an age.

  481. A few weeks ago,

  482. if you go back

  483. and listen to the sermons

  484. I did on John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  485. you'll see that

  486. in the final sermon

  487. I did just,

  488. I think,

  489. two weeks ago,

  490. is that the Bible

  491. teaches that Jesus

  492. is the exegesis

  493. of God.

  494. He's the interpreter

  495. of God.

  496. And all of God's word

  497. points to Jesus

  498. and is interpreted

  499. by Jesus.

  500. And not just Jesus

  501. in general,

  502. but in particular,

  503. the reason and the purpose

  504. that Jesus came,

  505. which is to help us

  506. by dying upon the cross

  507. to redeem us.

  508. And that's

  509. what scripture teaches us.

  510. I never turned on

  511. my stopwatch.

  512. I can press it now

  513. and I can speak

  514. for another 40 minutes.

  515. No, just joking.

  516. So that's what's

  517. happening in these words.

  518. So you say,

  519. okay, George,

  520. that's all very,

  521. very, very interesting.

  522. It's very,

  523. very interesting

  524. that you've stopped

  525. and you've spent

  526. a long time now

  527. on verses 16 and 17,

  528. you clever fellow,

  529. leaving you no time

  530. to talk about divorce.

  531. Just keep in mind

  532. the first thing, right?

  533. The first thing

  534. is that as we read

  535. the Bible,

  536. we have to realize

  537. about a heart issue.

  538. And the heart issue

  539. is that we treat God

  540. like a puzzle

  541. to be managed

  542. or solved.

  543. And once it's managed

  544. or solved,

  545. I can continue on

  546. in my life

  547. safe and flourishing.

  548. And that's

  549. the God

  550. who really speaks

  551. and really exists

  552. isn't like that at all.

  553. Right?

  554. The God,

  555. the true God

  556. who truly speaks

  557. is not a puzzle

  558. to solve

  559. so that I can be

  560. safe and flourish.

  561. So let's listen

  562. to this next text

  563. which sort of

  564. jumps out at us.

  565. Probably if we were reading,

  566. if we went back

  567. in a time machine

  568. and read this text

  569. in 1954,

  570. people would just say,

  571. oh, the really interesting

  572. thing is the next text.

  573. In fact, actually,

  574. for most of us,

  575. the next text

  576. should be more important.

  577. Last time I checked,

  578. so I'm using 2012 data,

  579. less than 20%

  580. of Canadians,

  581. less than 20%

  582. of Canadians

  583. give enough money

  584. to charity

  585. to ask for an income tax,

  586. like to be able

  587. to ask,

  588. to put a line item

  589. that they've given

  590. money to charity.

  591. I think it's only $100,

  592. $150.

  593. Less than 20%

  594. of Canadians

  595. give even that amount

  596. of money to charity.

  597. The next text

  598. should be far more shocking

  599. to us

  600. than the divorce text.

  601. Let's look at the divorce text.

  602. Let's listen to it again.

  603. Verse 18.

  604. Everyone who divorces

  605. his wife

  606. and marries another

  607. commits adultery.

  608. And he who marries

  609. a woman

  610. divorced from her husband

  611. commits adultery.

  612. I'm married to Louise

  613. for 33 years.

  614. Neither of us

  615. are divorced.

  616. My hope

  617. and my prayer

  618. is that if

  619. Jesus tarries

  620. that I'll have

  621. another 33 years

  622. with Louise

  623. and that we'll only

  624. grow closer

  625. as the years

  626. go on.

  627. That's my hope.

  628. That's what I pray.

  629. That God will give us

  630. a long life together.

  631. That he will regularly

  632. incline my heart

  633. towards her

  634. and incline her heart

  635. to me.

  636. And that Jesus

  637. will be the savior

  638. of my marriage.

  639. The Lord of my marriage.

  640. And that's what I pray.

  641. And that's what I hope

  642. will happen.

  643. So can I just say

  644. well,

  645. it sucks to be other people.

  646. I'm fine with this text.

  647. No,

  648. there's,

  649. here's the thing

  650. behind this text.

  651. Um,

  652. with Jesus

  653. in his kingdom,

  654. I will learn

  655. to be sexually

  656. whole

  657. and free.

  658. With Jesus

  659. in his kingdom,

  660. I will learn

  661. to be sexually

  662. whole

  663. and free.

  664. Um,

  665. if we don't sort of

  666. understand that

  667. behind

  668. and

  669. overall

  670. and underneath

  671. and at the end

  672. of all of the different

  673. scriptural texts

  674. around sexuality

  675. and around marriage,

  676. if we don't understand

  677. that,

  678. then all of these texts

  679. will become very,

  680. very complicated

  681. and hard for us.

  682. And if we're honest,

  683. texts like this

  684. are very hard

  685. in our culture

  686. because on one hand

  687. we agree with this text

  688. but on another hand

  689. we don't agree with it.

  690. On one hand

  691. we agree with this text

  692. because,

  693. um,

  694. we,

  695. we,

  696. um,

  697. those of us

  698. who enter into marriage

  699. don't want to have

  700. the marriage end

  701. in divorce.

  702. And,

  703. um,

  704. if anything,

  705. um,

  706. for those of us

  707. who are in a marriage

  708. and,

  709. and we want to have

  710. the marriage

  711. continue to,

  712. to have our hearts

  713. inclined to our spouse

  714. and to grow into it

  715. and all,

  716. um,

  717. we don't want

  718. our spouse

  719. to think that

  720. for frivolous reasons

  721. they can break up

  722. the marriage

  723. because,

  724. uh,

  725. you know,

  726. frankly now I'm

  727. 33 years older

  728. and,

  729. and Louise is,

  730. uh,

  731. very attractive

  732. and she could find

  733. a younger model

  734. and a more attractive model

  735. or a richer model

  736. or a more handy model,

  737. uh,

  738. or a whole pile

  739. of other types of things

  740. and,

  741. and,

  742. and so on one hand

  743. our culture agrees

  744. and understands

  745. that marriages

  746. shouldn't just break up

  747. that,

  748. um,

  749. we might want to say

  750. that in our understanding

  751. of our culture

  752. we should be able

  753. to have a variety

  754. of sexual relationships

  755. and then at some point

  756. in time we decide

  757. to marry

  758. but when we marry

  759. on one hand

  760. we go into the marriage

  761. in our culture

  762. worried that our marriage

  763. will end in a divorce

  764. and the other hand

  765. hoping that it doesn't

  766. end on a divorce

  767. and,

  768. and partially because

  769. of,

  770. of what's going on

  771. in our culture

  772. we have a lot

  773. of ambivalence

  774. and longings

  775. and yearnings

  776. around marriage

  777. and so in the midst

  778. of all of that

  779. the Bible teaches

  780. that God's intent

  781. is that,

  782. um,

  783. God calls,

  784. we are,

  785. some men and women

  786. are called

  787. to,

  788. uh,

  789. to marriage

  790. uh,

  791. of a man

  792. to a woman

  793. or a woman

  794. to a man

  795. and,

  796. um,

  797. and that when God

  798. calls us to a marriage

  799. of a man

  800. to a woman

  801. it's to be the intent

  802. of a lifelong union

  803. and that outside

  804. of that

  805. uh,

  806. we are called

  807. to abstain

  808. from sexual knowing

  809. and that,

  810. and that in fact

  811. while it's counterintuitive

  812. to our culture

  813. it wouldn't have been

  814. counterintuitive

  815. to our culture

  816. in 1954

  817. or other times

  818. but in our culture

  819. right now

  820. that's a very

  821. counterintuitive

  822. statement

  823. that it's human

  824. flourishing

  825. happens within the

  826. context

  827. of either a

  828. lifelong marriage

  829. of a man

  830. to a woman

  831. where sexual

  832. knowing

  833. uh,

  834. where sexual

  835. knowing

  836. takes place

  837. and is part

  838. of it

  839. where sexual

  840. abstinence

  841. sexual knowing

  842. being abstaining

  843. from that

  844. in singleness

  845. and that human

  846. flourishing

  847. can be accomplished

  848. in both

  849. and that's the

  850. consistent

  851. overarching teaching

  852. of the Bible

  853. so what's this

  854. thing about divorce

  855. uh,

  856. you'll notice

  857. in the bulletin

  858. uh,

  859. now that the

  860. Christmas holidays

  861. are over

  862. every week

  863. I put in

  864. something called

  865. going deeper

  866. and uh,

  867. going deeper

  868. I also have

  869. something called

  870. growing in grace

  871. and going in deeper

  872. I usually have

  873. some extra

  874. Bible verses

  875. that people can

  876. look at

  877. by themselves

  878. or with others

  879. to go deeper

  880. into the topic

  881. and I've placed

  882. in there

  883. the six other

  884. primary texts

  885. about divorce

  886. and remarriage

  887. in the Old

  888. and New Testament

  889. here's what I'm

  890. going to say

  891. about the text

  892. remember I said

  893. to you

  894. that um

  895. one of the things

  896. that Jesus teaches

  897. is he says

  898. that uh

  899. that ultimately

  900. God is the one

  901. responsible for the law

  902. the prophets

  903. and when we see

  904. in a few weeks

  905. Luke chapter 21

    Luke 21 chapter mention

  906. that God is the one

  907. responsible

  908. ultimately

  909. for the writing

  910. of the New Testament

  911. he stands behind

  912. the word

  913. he gives it

  914. its power

  915. so if Luke

    Luke 16:18

  916. chapter 16

  917. verse 18

  918. was the absolutely

  919. only text

  920. in all of the Bible

  921. that talked about

  922. divorce and remarriage

  923. then we would have

  924. to take that

  925. as having no

  926. other type

  927. of context

  928. and it would mean

  929. exactly what it says

  930. but given

  931. that God

  932. is the author

  933. of all of scripture

  934. a very fundamental

  935. principle of interpreting

  936. the Bible

  937. is that we read

  938. the Bible

  939. every particular

  940. verse of the Bible

  941. within the context

  942. of the larger Bible

  943. that that's one of the things

  944. that you can pray for me

  945. it's one of the things

  946. for our ministry interns

  947. is that as they have

  948. experience

  949. preaching different

  950. parts of the Bible

  951. that they are also

  952. trying to learn

  953. the whole sweep

  954. of the Bible

  955. and so that

  956. and part of my mentoring

  957. with them

  958. is that they don't

  959. interpret one part

  960. of the Bible

  961. in such a way

  962. that it makes

  963. other parts of the Bible

  964. be contradicted

  965. or look foolish

  966. or look ridiculous

  967. and that's part of the task

  968. of everything

  969. so in this particular case

  970. there's no other case

  971. in Luke's gospel

  972. where Jesus talks about this

  973. we're going to talk about

  974. the context in a moment

  975. but if you

  976. it's very puzzling

  977. on one hand

  978. that Jesus says this

  979. immediately after

  980. he said that nothing

  981. in the law

  982. will ever go away

  983. and Deuteronomy 24

  984. when you look at it

  985. later on in going deeper

  986. you'll see that

  987. Deuteronomy chapter 24

    Deuteronomy 24 chapter mention

  988. allows remarriage

  989. after divorce

  990. and when you look

  991. at some of the other texts

  992. you'll see that

  993. in Matthew chapter 5

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  994. and Matthew 19

  995. a different book

  996. but Jesus allows

  997. remarriage after divorce

  998. when there has been

  999. pornea

  1000. in the marriage

  1001. pornea to the extent

  1002. that it causes

1003. a break in the marriage

  1004. and the wronged party

  1005. does not believe

1006. the marriage can be healed

  1007. and pornea

  1008. it's a Greek word

1009. is any type of sexual knowing

  1010. or sexual stimulation

  1011. outside of the marriage

  1012. of a man to a woman

1013. or the woman to the man

  1014. and Jesus says

  1015. that pornea

  1016. can cause a break

  1017. in a marriage

  1018. in such a way

  1019. that the wronged person

  1020. can desire to remarry

  1021. and in 1 Corinthians 7

1022. there is a second case

  1023. where in the case

  1024. of basically desertion

  1025. or abandonment

  1026. or a massive rejection

  1027. by the non-Christian

  1028. of the Christian

  1029. the marriage is broken

  1030. and by implication

  1031. a person can remarry

  1032. so what is Jesus

  1033. saying here

  1034. I would take it

  1035. that we have to

  1036. interpret these words

  1037. in a way that doesn't

  1038. contradict those other words

  1039. and so I think

  1040. it's referring to

  1041. two particular types

  1042. of things

1043. and remember how I said

1044. that what we often do

  1045. in our understanding

  1046. of the Bible

1047. is that we want to try

  1048. to solve the riddle

  1049. of God

  1050. and the riddle

  1051. of his word

  1052. in such a way

  1053. that it allows us

  1054. on our terms

  1055. to flourish

  1056. and on our terms

  1057. to be safe

  1058. I meet somebody

  1059. different than Louise

  1060. and I decide

1061. that I want to spend time

  1062. with that person

  1063. who's different

  1064. than Louise

  1065. and I don't want to

  1066. violate the biblical command

  1067. against adultery

  1068. so I divorce Louise

  1069. so that I can

  1070. marry this new person

  1071. and God cuts

  1072. right through that

  1073. Jesus cuts

  1074. right through that

  1075. and says

  1076. what you've just done

  1077. is adultery

  1078. don't play fast

  1079. and loose

  1080. with the Bible

  1081. and don't play

  1082. fast and loose

  1083. with religious rules

  1084. and being able

  1085. to manipulate

  1086. religious rules

  1087. don't claim

  1088. that you didn't

  1089. fully intend

  1090. everything in your marriage

1091. and a full sense of it

  1092. and therefore

  1093. there's some type

  1094. of an exemption

  1095. from it

  1096. what you've just done

  1097. is adultery

  1098. in fact

  1099. obviously

  1100. in our culture

  1101. with prenuptial agreements

  1102. and other things

  1103. like that

1104. there is a great fear

  1105. of many people

  1106. in our culture

  1107. that people will enter

  1108. into a marriage

  1109. with the intention

  1110. of divorce

  1111. not most people

  1112. most people

  1113. especially those

  1114. who are victims

  1115. of desertion

  1116. abandonment

  1117. violence

  1118. which is a

  1119. particular

  1120. heinous form

  1121. of rejection

  1122. of the other person

  1123. people who

  1124. enter into

  1125. extramarital affairs

  1126. but the wronged

  1127. person

  1128. in these things

  1129. who really did

  1130. desire

  1131. to love

  1132. and cherish

  1133. and draw close

  1134. to the other person

  1135. then all that's

  1136. happened

  1137. is a great

  1138. violation

  1139. and a great

  1140. wounding

  1141. but some people

  1142. use laws

  1143. and exceptions

  1144. and wealth

  1145. and personal interest

  1146. and personal desires

  1147. for projects

  1148. to cast away

  1149. their promises

  1150. and their commitments

1151. so they can move on

  1152. to the next stage

  1153. of their project

  1154. in life

1155. and if some of you

  1156. are here

  1157. feeling wronged

  1158. and picked on

  1159. because I've said that

1160. all I'm trying to explain

1161. is what the Bible teaches

  1162. and your quarrel

  1163. is ultimately

  1164. with Jesus

  1165. not with me

  1166. and I'm not trying

  1167. to bang you

  1168. over the head

  1169. in Islam

  1170. although I think

  1171. in most cultures

  1172. it's not really

  1173. practiced very much

  1174. but in Islam

  1175. in there are

  1176. I've been told

  1177. there are some places

  1178. where

  1179. you can

  1180. a man can sleep

  1181. with a prostitute

  1182. and

  1183. to get around

  1184. the problem

  1185. of adultery

  1186. within Islam

  1187. they marry

  1188. the prostitute

  1189. sleep with a prostitute

  1190. and then divorce

  1191. the prostitute

  1192. and therefore

  1193. they have not

  1194. committed adultery

  1195. texts like this

  1196. would speak

  1197. in a very powerful

  1198. sense of rejection

  1199. that would be

  1200. an extreme case

  1201. of using religion

  1202. to avoid

  1203. the clear intent

  1204. of God

  1205. that God

  1206. intends

  1207. marriage

  1208. and he intends

  1209. it

  1210. as something

  1211. that will last

  1212. forever

  1213. until Jesus

  1214. comes

  1215. or until

  1216. death

  1217. of one

  1218. or both

  1219. of the

  1220. partners

  1221. and that's

  1222. his intention

  1223. but the Bible

  1224. recognizing

  1225. that it's

  1226. sinful human

  1227. beings

  1228. who enter

  1229. into the

  1230. holy estate

  1231. of matrimony

  1232. provides

  1233. some cases

  1234. whereby

  1235. due to

  1236. sin

  1237. the marriage

  1238. comes to

  1239. an end

  1240. and the wronged

  1241. person can enter

  1242. into a new

  1243. marriage

  1244. marriage

  1245. and I think

  1246. there's great

  1247. wisdom in the

  1248. Bible

  1249. a wisdom

  1250. that our

  1251. culture needs

  1252. and a wisdom

  1253. for which we

  1254. should not be

  1255. ashamed

  1256. because the

  1257. Bible is

  1258. wise

  1259. I only have

  1260. a few minutes

  1261. to talk about

  1262. the last text

  1263. George

  1264. what about

  1265. the rich man

  1266. I'm going to

  1267. say two

  1268. things

  1269. maybe I'll

  1270. say three

  1271. things relatively

  1272. quick

  1273. because I'm

  1274. very conscious

  1275. of the

  1276. time

  1277. the first

  1278. thing

  1279. is that

  1280. with Jesus

  1281. in his

  1282. kingdom

  1283. I will

  1284. learn to

  1285. open my

  1286. eyes and be

  1287. generous

  1288. okay

  1289. as we're

  1290. going to

  1291. read through

  1292. this

  1293. parable

  1294. because

  1295. the time

  1296. consists

  1297. I'm going to

  1298. sort of

  1299. give you

  1300. the two

  1301. points

  1302. I'll be

  1303. online

  1304. if you

  1305. want to

  1306. write

  1307. them

  1308. down

  1309. okay

  1310. one of

  1311. the

  1312. things

  1313. about

  1314. this

  1315. parable

  1316. that we

  1317. come to

  1318. that's

  1319. very

  1320. shocking

  1321. is that

  1322. the rich

  1323. man in

  1324. the

  1325. parable

  1326. he's

  1327. not

  1328. said

  1329. that

  1330. he did

  1331. a single

  1332. thing

  1333. wrong

  1334. in terms

  1335. of doing

  1336. something

  1337. wrong

  1338. it's not

  1339. wrong

  1340. to have

  1341. a party

  1342. it's not

  1343. wrong

  1344. to have

  1345. a feast

  1346. it's not

  1347. wrong

  1348. to have

  1349. somebody

  1350. take you

  1351. to an

  1352. expensive

  1353. restaurant

  1354. and because

  1355. they just

  1356. want to

  1357. honor you

  1358. and love

  1359. you

  1360. they buy

  1361. you

  1362. a really

  1363. expensive

  1364. meal

  1365. that's

  1366. not a

  1367. sin

  1368. if we

  1369. think

  1370. those

  1371. things

  1372. are

  1373. sins

  1374. it's

  1375. not

  1376. because

  1377. of

  1378. the

  1379. Bible

  1380. but

  1381. because

  1382. of

  1383. a

  1384. type

  1385. of

  1386. religion

  1387. or

  1388. spirituality

  1389. which

  1390. emphasizes

  1391. asceticism

  1392. and

  1393. denigrates

  1394. and puts

  1395. aside

  1396. the body

  1397. it's

  1398. not

  1399. a

  1400. sin

  1401. to

  1402. sit

  1403. down

  1404. and

  1405. enjoy

  1406. a

  1407. big

  1408. steak

  1409. with

  1410. sorry

  1411. Baptists

  1412. with a

  1413. nice glass

  1414. of red

  1415. wine

  1416. and mashed

  1417. potatoes

  1418. with lots

  1419. and lots

  1420. and lots

  1421. of gravy

  1422. it is

  1423. not a

  1424. sin

  1425. to do

  1426. that

  1427. and for

  1428. vegetarians

  1429. it's not

  1430. a sin

  1431. to have

  1432. a really

  1433. nice

  1434. big piece

  1435. of tofu

  1436. deep

  1437. fried

  1438. with a

  1439. cheesy

  1440. sauce

  1441. and

  1442. quinoa

  1443. okay

  1444. and I

  1445. also know

  1446. I'm married

  1447. to a

  1448. vegetarian

  1449. those of

  1450. us who

  1451. had

  1452. the steak

  1453. we're

  1454. going to

  1455. be in

  1456. heaven

  1457. to see

  1458. Jesus

  1459. quicker

  1460. than

  1461. the

  1462. people

  1463. who

  1464. had

  1465. the

  1466. tofu

  1467. and

  1468. the

  1469. quinoa

  1470. okay

  1471. so you

  1472. have to

  1473. temper it

  1474. but it's

  1475. not a

  1476. sin

  1477. okay

  1478. and here's

  1479. the terrible

  1480. thing

  1481. the shocking

  1482. thing about

  1483. this parable

  1484. what

  1485. damns

  1486. the man

  1487. is not

  1488. a sin

  1489. of

  1490. commission

  1491. but a

  1492. sin

  1493. of

  1494. omission

  1495. it's

  1496. not

  1497. that

  1498. he had

  1499. lots

  1500. of

  1501. great

  1502. food

  1503. it is

  1504. that he

  1505. knew

  1506. Lazarus

  1507. by name

  1508. and he

  1509. knew

  1510. Lazarus

  1511. his

  1512. poverty

  1513. and he

  1514. didn't

  1515. do

  1516. anything

  1517. it is

  1518. the sin

  1519. of

  1520. omission

  1521. that

  1522. damns

  1523. him

  1524. not a

  1525. sin

  1526. of

  1527. commission

  1528. and so

  1529. part of

  1530. the

  1531. positive

  1532. lesson

  1533. of the

  1534. text

  1535. is that

  1536. with

  1537. Jesus

  1538. in his

  1539. kingdom

  1540. I will

  1541. learn to

  1542. open my

  1543. eyes

  1544. and be

  1545. generous

  1546. and the

  1547. other thing

  1548. that we'll

  1549. see

  1550. is with

  1551. Jesus

  1552. in his

  1553. kingdom

  1554. I will

  1555. learn

  1556. good

  1557. helplessness

  1558. in the

  1559. context

  1560. of the

  1561. helper

  1562. this is a

  1563. very very

  1564. frightening

  1565. idea for

  1566. those of

  1567. us who

  1568. want to

  1569. see God

  1570. as a

  1571. problem

  1572. to be

  1573. solved

  1574. a riddle

  1575. to be

  1576. solved

  1577. that we

  1578. manage

  1579. and solve

  1580. it so

  1581. that we

  1582. can be

  1583. safe and

  1584. flourish

  1585. on our

  1586. own

  1587. terms

  1588. but the

  1589. Bible

  1590. is

  1591. constantly

  1592. trying to

  1593. undercut

  1594. our

  1595. sense

  1596. of

  1597. self

  1598. dependence

  1599. to say

  1600. there's a

  1601. type of

  1602. helplessness

  1603. which is

  1604. good for

  1605. us

  1606. and the

  1607. type of

  1608. helplessness

  1609. is always

  1610. in the

  1611. context

  1612. of the

  1613. presentation

  1614. of help

  1615. it's like

  1616. going to

  1617. some of

  1618. these

  1619. leadership

  1620. and

  1621. management

  1622. things

  1623. where they

  1624. do

  1625. things

  1626. like

  1627. ask you

  1628. to fall

  1629. backwards

  1630. and trust

  1631. that your

  1632. co-workers

  1633. will catch

  1634. you

  1635. that one

  1636. of the

  1637. things

  1638. that drives

  1639. people

  1640. into the

  1641. ground

  1642. is the

  1643. sense

  1644. that they

  1645. have to

  1646. be in

  1647. control

  1648. all of

  1649. the time

  1650. and not

  1651. trust

  1652. that people

  1653. will

  1654. help

  1655. them

  1656. the

  1657. Bible

  1658. is wise

  1659. let's

  1660. listen to

  1661. the

  1662. parable

  1663. there was

  1664. a rich

  1665. man

  1666. who was

  1667. clothed

  1668. in purple

  1669. and fine

  1670. linen

  1671. and who

  1672. feasted

  1673. sumptuously

  1674. every day

  1675. and at his

  1676. gate was

  1677. laid a poor

  1678. man named

  1679. Lazarus

  1680. covered with

  1681. sores

  1682. who desired

  1683. to be fed

  1684. with what fell

  1685. from the rich

  1686. man's table

  1687. this is

  1688. verse

  1689. now we're up

  1690. to verse

  1691. 21

  1692. where over

  1693. even the

  1694. dogs came

  1695. and licked

  1696. his sores

  1697. just pause

  1698. there

  1699. do not

  1700. think Walt

  1701. Disney

  1702. do not

  1703. think

  1704. Cinderella

  1705. singing a

  1706. song

  1707. while the

  1708. birds come

  1709. and help

  1710. with the

  1711. dishes

  1712. I think it was

  1713. Cinderella

  1714. where that

  1715. happened or

  1716. was it the

  1717. seven dwarves

  1718. I can't

  1719. remember

  1720. anyway don't

  1721. think Disney

  1722. the original

  1723. the word

  1724. for dogs

  1725. here is

  1726. wild dog

  1727. not pet

  1728. but wild

  1729. and it's

  1730. portraying

  1731. Lazarus as

  1732. being so

  1733. helpless

  1734. that he

  1735. can't

  1736. stop

  1737. a wild

  1738. dog

  1739. from

  1740. violating

  1741. his

  1742. person

  1743. giving him

  1744. even more

  1745. infection

  1746. while they

  1747. lick his

  1748. sores

  1749. that's the

  1750. image

  1751. massive

  1752. helplessness

  1753. and unclean

  1754. massively

  1755. helpless

  1756. verse 22

  1757. the poor

  1758. man died

  1759. and was

  1760. carried by

  1761. the angels

  1762. to Abraham's

  1763. side

  1764. the rich

  1765. man also

  1766. died and

  1767. was buried

  1768. and in

  1769. Hades

  1770. being in

  1771. torment

  1772. he lifted

  1773. up his

  1774. eyes

  1775. and saw

  1776. Abraham

  1777. afar off

  1778. with

  1779. Lazarus

  1780. at his

  1781. side

  1782. they called

  1783. out

  1784. father

  1785. Abraham

  1786. have mercy

  1787. on me

  1788. and send

  1789. Lazarus

  1790. see

  1791. I'm going to

  1792. tell you in a

  1793. moment but

  1794. this is very

  1795. the only

  1796. parable of

  1797. all of

  1798. Jesus's

  1799. parables

  1800. where anybody

  1801. has a

  1802. name is

  1803. this

  1804. parable

  1805. only

  1806. parable

  1807. everybody

  1808. else

  1809. says man

  1810. was going

  1811. down to

  1812. Jerusalem

  1813. there was

  1814. a father

  1815. with two

  1816. sons

  1817. there was

  1818. a woman

  1819. who lost

  1820. a coin

  1821. it's always

  1822. just

  1823. something

  1824. this is

  1825. the only

  1826. parable

  1827. where

  1828. somebody's

  1829. named

  1830. and it

  1831. has several

  1832. reasons

  1833. for it

  1834. and one

  1835. of them

  1836. is here

  1837. that now

  1838. it reveals

  1839. the rich

  1840. man doesn't

  1841. say

  1842. Abraham

  1843. you have

  1844. a whole

  1845. pile of

  1846. former

  1847. street

  1848. people

  1849. up there

  1850. could you

  1851. pick one

  1852. of those

  1853. street

  1854. people

  1855. and just

  1856. you know

  1857. help me

  1858. out here

  1859. a bit

  1860. okay

  1861. all those

  1862. days he

  1863. was feasting

  1864. he knew

  1865. who the

  1866. guy was

  1867. did

  1868. nothing

  1869. his

  1870. omission

  1871. is

  1872. revealed

  1873. his

  1874. omission

  1875. is

  1876. revealed

  1877. verse

  1878. 25

  1879. but

  1880. Abraham

  1881. said

  1882. child

  1883. remember

  1884. that

  1885. you

  1886. in

  1887. your

  1888. lifetime

  1889. received

  1890. your

  1891. good

  1892. things

  1893. and

  1894. Lazarus

  1895. and

  1896. like

  1897. man

  1898. are

  1899. bad

  1900. things

  1901. but

  1902. now

  1903. he

  1904. is

  1905. comforted

  1906. here

  1907. and

  1908. you

  1909. are

  1910. in

  1911. anguish

  1912. and

  1913. besides

  1914. all

  1915. this

  1916. between

  1917. us

  1918. and

  1919. you

  1920. a

  1921. great

  1922. chasm

  1923. has

  1924. been

  1925. fixed

  1926. in

  1927. order

  1928. that

  1929. those

  1930. who

  1931. had

  1932. passed

  1933. from

  1934. here

  1935. to

  1936. you

  1937. may

  1938. not

  1939. be

  1940. able

  1941. and

  1942. none

  1943. may

  1944. cross

  1945. from

  1946. there

  1947. to

  1948. us

  1949. and

  1950. the

  1951. rich

  1952. man

  1953. the

  1954. formerly

  1955. rich

  1956. man

  1957. said

  1958. then

  1959. I

  1960. beg

  1961. you

  1962. father

  1963. to

  1964. send

  1965. him

  1966. to

  1967. my

  1968. father's

  1969. house

  1970. for

  1971. I

  1972. have

  1973. five

  1974. brothers

  1975. so

  1976. that

  1977. he

  1978. may

  1979. warn

  1980. them

  1981. lest

  1982. they

  1983. also

  1984. come

  1985. into

  1986. this

  1987. place

  1988. of

  1989. torment

  1990. just

  1991. as a

  1992. second

  1993. here

  1994. how

  1995. do

  1996. you

  1997. think

  1998. it

  1999. would

  2000. actually

  2001. work

  2002. if

  2003. the

  2004. rich

  2005. guy

  2006. had

  2007. five

  2008. brothers

  2009. and

  2010. somebody

  2011. came

  2012. to him

  2013. and

  2014. said

  2015. I've

  2016. just

  2017. come

  2018. and

  2019. your

  2020. brothers

  2021. in

  2022. hell

  2023. I

  2024. don't

  2025. think

  2026. that

  2027. conversation

  2028. would

  2029. actually

  2030. be

  2031. highly

  2032. successful

  2033. but

  2034. Abraham

  2035. said

  2036. they

  2037. have

  2038. Moses

  2039. and

  2040. the

  2041. prophets

  2042. let

  2043. them

  2044. hear

  2045. them

  2046. in

  2047. other

  2048. words

  2049. Moses

  2050. and

  2051. the

  2052. prophets

  2053. are

  2054. all

  2055. we

  2056. need

  2057. to

  2058. know

  2059. about

  2060. our

  2061. need

  2062. for

  2063. Jesus

  2064. and

  2065. to

  2066. learn

  2067. to

  2068. follow

  2069. him

  2070. and

  2071. live

  2072. in

  2073. his

  2074. kingdom

  2075. and

  2076. the

  2077. rich

  2078. man

  2079. said

  2080. no

  2081. father

  2082. Abraham

  2083. but

  2084. if

  2085. someone

  2086. goes

  2087. to

  2088. them

  2089. from

  2090. the

  2091. dead

  2092. they

  2093. will

  2094. repent

  2095. and

  2096. Abraham

  2097. said

  2098. if

  2099. they

  2100. do

  2101. not

  2102. hear

  2103. Moses

  2104. and

  2105. the

  2106. prophets

  2107. neither

  2108. will

  2109. they

  2110. be

  2111. convinced

  2112. if

  2113. someone

  2114. should

  2115. rise

  2116. from

  2117. the

  2118. dead

  2119. and

  2120. those

  2121. of

  2122. you

  2123. who

  2124. have

  2125. been

  2126. here

  2127. other

  2128. weeks

  2129. know

  2130. that

  2131. at

  2132. a

  2133. literary

  2134. level

  2135. how

  2136. Luke's

  2137. gospel

  2138. is

  2139. written

  2140. is

  2141. that

  2142. in

  2143. Luke

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  2144. chapter

  2145. 9

  2146. Jesus

  2147. announces

  2148. to

  2149. his

  2150. disciples

  2151. that

  2152. he's

  2153. going

  2154. to

  2155. Jerusalem

  2156. to

  2157. die

  2158. and

  2159. he

  2160. will

  2161. rise

  2162. again

  2163. again

  2164. that

  2165. he's

  2166. going

  2167. to

  2168. Jerusalem

  2169. to

  2170. die

  2171. and

  2172. when

  2173. he

  2174. dies

  2175. he

  2176. will

  2177. rise

  2178. again

  2179. it's

  2180. a

  2181. reminder

  2182. to us

  2183. as a

  2184. reader

  2185. by the

  2186. time we

  2187. get to

  2188. the end

  2189. of Luke's

  2190. gospel

  2191. and

  2192. Jesus

  2193. is

  2194. risen

  2195. from

  2196. the

  2197. dead

  2198. that

  2199. if

  2200. we

  2201. don't

  2202. listen

  2203. to

  2204. Moses

  2205. and

  2206. the

  2207. prophets

  2208. we

  2209. won't

  2210. listen

  2211. to

  2212. one

  2213. who

  2214. rises

  2215. from

  2216. the

  2217. dead

  2218. here's

  2219. the

  2220. final

  2221. significance

  2222. about

  2223. the

  2224. text

  2225. the

  2226. name

  2227. Lazarus

  2228. the

  2229. name

  2230. Lazarus

  2231. is

  2232. but

  2233. the

  2234. main

  2235. thing

  2236. about

  2237. it

  2238. is

  2239. that

  2240. its

  2241. name

  2242. means

  2243. and

  2244. the

  2245. name

  2246. has

  2247. to

  2248. mean

  2249. something

  2250. because

  2251. it's

  2252. the

  2253. only

  2254. time

  2255. anybody's

  2256. named

  2257. in a

  2258. parable

  2259. and

  2260. it

  2261. means

  2262. God

  2263. helps

  2264. God

  2265. helps

  2266. that's

  2267. what

  2268. it

  2269. means

  2270. Lazarus

  2271. is

  2272. completely

  2273. and utterly

  2274. helpless

  2275. in

  2276. every

  2277. sense

  2278. of

  2279. the

  2280. word

  2281. physically

  2282. he

  2283. can't

  2284. move

  2285. physically

  2286. he is

  2287. completely

  2288. and utterly

  2289. having

  2290. his

  2291. space

  2292. violated

  2293. he

  2294. has

  2295. no

  2296. financial

  2297. resources

  2298. he is

  2299. completely

  2300. and utterly

  2301. helpless

  2302. and the

  2303. only thing

  2304. that gets

  2305. him into

  2306. heaven

  2307. is that

  2308. God

  2309. helps

  2310. so here's

  2311. the final

  2312. thing about

  2313. this text

  2314. and we're

  2315. going to

  2316. stand in a

  2317. moment

  2318. and close

  2319. in prayer

  2320. conversion

  2321. happens

  2322. when we

  2323. say to

  2324. the

  2325. father

  2326. all my

  2327. life I

  2328. have thought

  2329. of myself

  2330. as a

  2331. rich

  2332. man

  2333. and I

  2334. have never

  2335. realized

  2336. I

  2337. am

  2338. Lazarus

  2339. if we

  2340. approach

  2341. the Bible

  2342. thinking that

  2343. we are

  2344. the rich

  2345. man

  2346. we will

  2347. never

  2348. understand

  2349. the Bible

  2350. if we

  2351. approach

  2352. religion

  2353. and

  2354. spirituality

  2355. and Jesus

  2356. himself

  2357. as the

  2358. rich

  2359. man

  2360. we will

  2361. never

  2362. understand

  2363. Jesus

  2364. we will

  2365. never

  2366. understand

  2367. the Bible

  2368. we will

  2369. never

  2370. understand

  2371. God

  2372. Jesus

  2373. is inviting

  2374. me

  2375. and you

  2376. to

  2377. understand

  2378. I

  2379. spend

  2380. my

  2381. days

  2382. as

  2383. the rich

  2384. man

  2385. but I

  2386. am

  2387. Lazarus

  2388. who needs

  2389. God's

  2390. help

  2391. and not

  2392. only is

  2393. conversion

  2394. when we go

  2395. and say

  2396. God I

  2397. never realized

  2398. how much

  2399. all I

  2400. wanted

  2401. to do

  2402. was

  2403. control

  2404. and manage

  2405. you

  2406. and I

  2407. am

  2408. Lazarus

  2409. change

  2410. me

  2411. from

  2412. the rich

  2413. man

  2414. to

  2415. Lazarus

  2416. that

  2417. is going

  2418. to require

  2419. humility

  2420. of you

  2421. and me

  2422. change

  2423. me

  2424. from

  2425. the rich

  2426. man

  2427. project

  2428. I

  2429. am

  2430. Lazarus

  2431. help

  2432. me

  2433. and not

  2434. only is

  2435. that how

  2436. we get

  2437. converted

  2438. it's how

  2439. we grow

  2440. as followers

  2441. of Jesus

  2442. that day

  2443. by day

  2444. by day

  2445. I say

  2446. to him

  2447. father

  2448. I've

  2449. spent

  2450. my

  2451. entire

  2452. week

  2453. wishing

  2454. that I

  2455. was

  2456. the rich

  2457. man

  2458. and I

  2459. have not

  2460. realized

  2461. that I

  2462. am

  2463. Lazarus

  2464. and that

  2465. I

  2466. am

  2467. helpless

  2468. and you

  2469. reveal my

  2470. helplessness

  2471. in the

  2472. context

  2473. of the

  2474. great

  2475. helper

  2476. the great

  2477. deliverer

  2478. who loved

  2479. me so

  2480. much

  2481. he died

  2482. upon

  2483. the cross

  2484. for me

  2485. I

  2486. am

  2487. Lazarus

  2488. Jesus

  2489. is the

  2490. helper

  2491. help

  2492. me

  2493. please

  2494. stand

  2495. bow our

  2496. heads

  2497. in

  2498. prayer

  2499. father

  2500. ask

  2501. that your

  2502. holy

  2503. spirit

  2504. would

  2505. move

  2506. and work

  2507. deeply

  2508. in our

  2509. hearts

  2510. and our

  2511. minds

  2512. that

  2513. you would

  2514. reveal to

  2515. us

  2516. father

  2517. gently

  2518. but

  2519. persistently

  2520. reveal to

  2521. us

  2522. how much

  2523. of our

  2524. lives

  2525. are lived

  2526. in terms

  2527. of being

  2528. the rich

  2529. man

  2530. and refusing

  2531. to acknowledge

  2532. that we

  2533. are Lazarus

  2534. and that you

  2535. have provided

  2536. that great

  2537. help

  2538. that fits

  2539. us

  2540. to know

  2541. Jesus

  2542. and to

  2543. live in

  2544. his

  2545. kingdom

  2546. both on

  2547. this side

  2548. of the

  2549. grave

  2550. and for

  2551. all

  2552. eternity

  2553. we ask

  2554. father

  2555. that your

  2556. holy

  2557. spirit

  2558. would

  2559. convict

  2560. us

  2561. that

  2562. convict

  2563. me

  2564. convict

  2565. each

  2566. one

  2567. to

  2568. turn

  2569. from the

  2570. rich

  2571. man

  2572. project

  2573. and accept

  2574. and embrace

  2575. that I

  2576. am

  2577. Lazarus

  2578. and that

  2579. Jesus

  2580. is my

  2581. great

  2582. helper

  2583. father

  2584. help me

  2585. to live

  2586. my life

  2587. conscious

  2588. of this

  2589. make me

  2590. a disciple

  2591. gripped

  2592. by the

  2593. gospel

  2594. who now

  2595. lives

  2596. for your

  2597. glory

  2598. and all

  2599. this I

  2600. ask in

  2601. the name

  2602. of Jesus

  2603. your

  2604. son

  2605. and our

  2606. savior

  2607. amen

  2608. please take

  2609. a posture

  2610. of prayer

  2611. as we enter

  2612. into a time

  2613. of intercession

  2614. as we enter

  2615. this time

  2616. of prayer

  2617. please feel

  2618. free to take

  2619. whatever posture

  2620. helps you to

  2621. communicate

  2622. with God

  2623. our father

  2624. heavenly father

  2625. as we enter

  2626. this new year

  2627. help us both

  2628. individually

  2629. and corporately

  2630. to seek your

  2631. will both

  2632. for ourselves

  2633. and
