  1. Father, every single person here probably needs to say sorry to somebody,

  2. and every single person here needs to forgive somebody.

  3. Father, we confess before you that we flatter ourselves too much

  4. to understand the true state of our soul

  5. and the true state of our mind and our heart and our will.

  6. So, Father, we ask that your word has challenged us around forgiveness

  7. and other matters. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would gently

  8. but deeply fall upon us. Fall upon us, Father.

  9. And as your Holy Spirit falls upon us, help us, Father, to realize

  10. the true state of our souls and our affections, who we need to forgive.

  11. And, Father, we ask that your Holy Spirit would help us to forgive.

  12. Father, we thank you that we can come to you in prayer,

  13. that we can call out to you for the freedom of forgiveness.

  14. So, Father, we call out for such freedom that we might forgive.

  15. We call out and ask you to pour out your Holy Spirit upon us as we hear your word.

  16. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  17. Please be seated.

  18. Thank you.

  19. Thank you.

  20. So, if you're a guest here, you might not know this about me,

  21. but Louise and myself, we've been blessed with nine children.

  22. And our kids are all, we only have three left at home.

  23. And so this, what I'm about to tell you, hasn't happened to us in quite a while.

  24. But it used to be the case.

  25. I think it mainly happened when it was just Louise with the kids in a grocery store or someplace,

  26. that some complete and utter stranger would come up to Louise and give her a lecture on birth control.

  27. I'm not making this up.

  28. It was a regular occurrence.

  29. In fact, actually, there was a fellow in the congregation who,

  30. when it was announced that we were expecting our ninth child,

  31. he was a very gruff and outspoken guy.

  32. He's now with the Lord.

  33. And he told me, he said, George, don't you know about birth control?

  34. Like, what are you doing having nine kids on your salary?

  35. And I didn't say anything.

  36. I just turned the other cheek.

  37. Then our child was born, and it was a boy.

  38. And the man who had said this to me, his name was Tom.

  39. And we named our son Tom.

  40. And now we named our son Tom not because it was Tom who'd said this to me,

  41. but, in fact, Tom, or Thomas, had been, like, on the list for every one of our boys.

  42. And it just, we ended up choosing another name.

  43. But we'd always liked the name, and we finally just went with Thomas, Thomas Elijah.

  44. And, but the man who told me off when he heard that we'd named our son Tom,

  45. he thought it was the funniest thing in the world

  46. that I had showed him what I thought of his rebuke by naming my son after him.

  47. And I never told him that it had nothing to do with his name,

  48. that if, you know, he'd been called, you know, Bilbo,

  49. we wouldn't have called our son Bilbo.

  50. Well, Bilbo's sort of a neat name, but we wouldn't have called Tommy Bilbo.

  51. Anyway, so it happens inside the church, but outside of the church especially.

  52. I mean, I think that was the only time anybody in the church ever gave, you know,

  53. was, like, bold enough to come and straight out say,

  54. have you heard about birth control and you should be practicing it,

  55. you're having too many kids.

  56. But it would happen to my wife quite often.

  57. A short lecture from a complete and utter stranger.

  58. Now, one of the things that people complain about religious people

  59. is that religious people, spiritual people, are intrusive, busybodies

  60. who look for opportunities to intrude in your life and tell you off.

  61. In fact, actually, one of the things that for many people that they would make

  62. as a distinction between being religious, like a Christian or a Muslim,

  63. and being spiritual is that they would say to themselves at least,

  64. that religious people are intrusive, busybodies,

  65. intruding in stuff that is not their business, but spiritual people don't.

  66. Although I'm guessing that many of the people who spoke to us about birth control

  67. were probably spiritual, not religious.

  68. As often would happen in the Glebe, not exactly a home of fervent Christianity.

  69. And, sorry, I'm not putting anybody down from the Glebe.

  70. Louise and I have lived in the Glebe at different times over the years.

  71. So is it, in fact, the case that the Bible encourages us to be busybodies?

  72. Some of you who might remember what I just read a few moments ago

  73. when it talks about rebuking might say,

  74. Aha, that is why Christians are such intrusive, busybodies.

  75. Jesus tells them to be intrusive, busybodies.

  76. Well, is that the case?

  77. Well, let's have a look and see what it is that Jesus actually tells us

  78. and what he tells us to do and what he doesn't tell us to do.

  79. So if you have your Bibles, please turn to Luke chapter 17.

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  80. Luke 17.

  81. And we'll begin reading at the first verse.

  82. We're going to look at all 19 verses,

  83. obviously some parts of it a little bit in more depth than others.

  84. And as you're turning to Luke chapter 17,

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  85. what we do at this church is we preach through books of the Bible.

  86. So if you're wondering what we're going to talk about next week,

  87. you can just read verses 20 to the end of the chapter

  88. and we just go through the Bible.

  89. And so the Gospel of Luke was written before the year 70,

  90. probably in the mid-60s.

  91. And it was written by a pagan who had become a follower of Jesus.

  92. And this pagan who had become a follower of Jesus

  93. was a very well-educated man.

  94. And he did piles and piles of research with eyewitnesses.

  95. And he compiled this true history, this true biography of Jesus.

  96. And, you know, it doesn't look like we're reading something

  97. that was written, let's say, in the year 67 or 68,

  98. because it's, you know, in my case it all looks fancy.

  99. But that's actually what we're reading when we're reading this.

  100. And so Luke claims that he has done the research

  101. and this is something that Jesus actually said and actually did.

  102. It's how we know about Jesus.

  103. So what is it that Jesus said about being a busybody?

  104. Was he encouraging us to be busybodies?

  105. Luke 17, verse 1.

    Luke 17:1

  106. And he said to his disciples,

  107. so Jesus is speaking to his followers at this particular case,

  108. temptation to sin, temptations to sin are sure to come.

  109. Just sort of pause here for a second.

  110. This should be very, very humbling.

  111. It's very, very definite in the English,

  112. but in the original language it's even more definite.

  113. That if anybody thinks that as a follower of Jesus

  114. a time will come when they neither sin nor are even tempted to sin,

  115. they're not listening to Jesus.

  116. Until we die or until Jesus comes and we see him face to face,

  117. every follower of Jesus, like every other person on the planet,

  118. will regularly have to struggle with temptations.

  119. I tell some guys who are my age, you know,

  120. that there's certain things that they might not be as tempted to

  121. as when they were 22,

  122. and it's not necessarily because of godliness,

  123. it's just because of age.

  124. And that there's other things they're going to be tempted by,

  125. often maybe that they're blind about.

  126. So this is a very, on one level,

  127. it's sort of a sobering passage,

  128. and it's an interesting thing as we're going to start looking

  129. about what Jesus says about being busybodies.

  130. He begins by just telling us,

  131. if you think you will ever have a time in your life

  132. when you aren't tempted and aren't struggling with things,

  133. you don't understand your heart.

  134. You don't understand your heart.

  135. George, he's saying to me,

  136. I don't understand my heart if I ever start to think that.

  137. Let's read verse one again.

  138. And Jesus said to his disciples,

  139. temptations to sin are sure to come,

  140. but woe to the one through whom they come.

  141. It would be better for him or her

  142. if a millstone were hung around their neck

  143. and they were cast into the sea

  144. than that they should cause one of these little ones to sin.

  145. Sort of another sort of a very sobering thing.

  146. It would be better to have a gruesome,

  147. a gruesome, horrific death

  148. than be the one who leads other people into sin.

  149. Now, here comes to the part sort of more

  150. that we're going to spend more time on.

  151. Pay attention, verse three.

  152. Pay attention to yourselves.

  153. If your brother sins, rebuke him.

  154. And if he repents, forgive him.

  155. And if he sins against you seven times in the day,

  156. in other words, if he sins against you time and time and time again

  157. during that same day,

  158. and every time after he's done the same thing

  159. or she's done the same thing,

  160. they turn to you and say,

  161. I repent,

  162. Jesus says,

  163. you must forgive that person.

  164. So,

  165. it's sort of a very, very stark type of text.

  166. And what I'm going to do is,

  167. Andrew, if you could put the first point up

  168. and then we'll sort of look into the text

  169. and see what's going on here.

  170. What I decided to do today

  171. in terms of summaries

  172. is to write four short prayers for you.

  173. I mean, I think,

  174. generally speaking,

  175. one of the things I can help people with most

  176. is just help them to learn how to pray.

  177. And one of the most important things we can do

  178. is to learn from Jesus,

  179. learn from the word,

  180. what it is that we are to pray for.

  181. And so I'm trying to,

  182. each of these parts as we go through Luke 17,

  183. I've written a short prayer

  184. that tries to capture the point

  185. and turns it into something

  186. that we can both understand

  187. and also that we can pray for ourselves.

  188. And so,

  189. here's the first thing,

  190. and I'll unpack it,

  191. why it's a worthwhile thing

  192. for many of us to pray.

  193. Dear God,

  194. please grow in me

  195. a deep and humble trust in you

  196. and free me up

  197. to speak to the wrongdoer

  198. of the wrong they did to me

  199. and to forgive them.

  200. And as you know,

  201. I try as often as possible

  202. to put points

  203. so that it's me praying

  204. so that if you write it down

  205. to meditate upon it

  206. and to maybe try to pray it,

  207. it's,

  208. it's,

  209. you're saying me.

  210. And,

  211. and here's,

  212. this is I think what Jesus

  213. is trying to get at in this text.

  214. He's wanting us to turn to God

  215. and say,

  216. please grow in me

  217. a deep and humble trust in you

  218. and free me up

  219. to speak to the wrongdoer

  220. of the wrong they did to me

  221. and to forgive them.

  222. Now,

  223. you see,

  224. the very first thing

  225. about this text is it's,

  226. if you look at the verses three and four,

  227. it's not talking about us

  228. being busy bodies

  229. and it's not talking about us

  230. being easily offended,

  231. you know,

  232. by,

  233. you know,

  234. if we have nine children,

  235. we're not sinning against

  236. that person in Loblaws

  237. or the natural food store

  238. or something like that.

  239. We're not sinning against them,

  240. right?

  241. And,

  242. and look at it in verse three and four.

  243. Look at them together.

  244. Pay attention to yourselves.

  245. If your brother sins,

  246. rebuke him.

  247. Now,

  248. it sounds as if it can just be anything.

  249. And if he repents,

  250. forgive him.

  251. But just the mere fact

  252. that if he repents,

  253. forgive him,

  254. implies that they've sinned against you.

  255. It's not just sin in general.

  256. It's not that you're to go around

  257. to the grocery stores

  258. and the coffee shops

  259. looking for people doing bad things

  260. and then attacking them

  261. and telling them

  262. they're doing something bad

  263. because you don't,

  264. you don't forgive them

  265. if they've done something bad

  266. against another person.

  267. You forgive them

  268. if they've done something wrong

  269. against you.

  270. And Jesus makes it clear

  271. in verse four.

  272. And if he sins against you

  273. seven times in the day

  274. and turns to you seven times

  275. saying,

  276. I repent,

  277. you must forgive him.

  278. So the first thing is

  279. that this text

  280. is very,

  281. very clearly saying,

  282. George,

  283. don't be a busy body.

  284. Don't be intrusive

  285. in people's lives.

  286. Don't go around

  287. like you're the morality police

  288. and the spirituality police

  289. jumping on people

  290. when they fall short

  291. of your standards.

  292. That's not what Jesus

  293. is telling us,

  294. telling me to do at all.

  295. He's telling me two things

  296. and there is a very,

  297. very wise teaching of Jesus.

  298. And for some of us

  299. here in this room,

  300. especially some of us

  301. who've been really

  302. beaten down in life,

  303. we need to hear

  304. that Jesus is encouraging us

  305. to have the strength

  306. and the freedom

  307. to come to him

  308. to be built up

  309. and have the strength

  310. and the freedom

  311. to rebuke somebody

  312. who's wronged us

  313. because some of us

  314. have a deep trouble,

  315. have a deep problem with that.

  316. And for others of us here,

  317. our deep problem

  318. is that we're far too

  319. quick to attack.

  320. And Jesus is challenging

  321. that as well,

  322. as I'll show you.

  323. He's challenging

  324. that as well.

  325. So the first thing is,

  326. look at it again,

  327. verses three and four.

  328. Pay attention to yourselves.

  329. If your brother sins,

  330. rebuke him.

  331. And if he repents,

  332. forgive him.

  333. And if he sins against you

  334. seven times in the day

  335. and turns to you

  336. seven times saying,

  337. I repent,

  338. you must forgive him.

  339. Here's the big thing

  340. which makes it so different

  341. than attacking a person

  342. is that we rebuke

  343. in the hope

  344. of repentance.

  345. We rebuke

  346. in the hope

  347. of repentance.

  348. In fact,

  349. you can really take it

  350. from the text.

  351. If you don't hope

  352. for repentance,

  353. don't rebuke.

  354. If you don't hope

  355. that the person

  356. will repent,

  357. you might worry

  358. that they won't.

  359. You might be pretty

  360. convinced inside of you

  361. that they're not going to.

  362. That's one thing.

  363. But you need to try

  364. to frame the rebuke

  365. and everything

  366. about the encounter

  367. in the hope

  368. and in the prayer

  369. that after the person

  370. has been rebuked,

  371. they will want to repent.

  372. And if you don't have

  373. that hope,

  374. then all you're doing

  375. is attacking.

  376. And the Bible

  377. is not giving us

  378. any encouragement

  379. for a moral

  380. and spiritual

  381. and theological

  382. attack

  383. against another person.

  384. And the other thing

  385. that we see

  386. in this text

  387. is that the Bible

  388. is unbelievably wise

  389. because not only

  390. is it telling me

  391. that I am to rebuke

  392. in the hope

  393. of repentance,

  394. the text is also

  395. telling me

  396. to be culturally

  397. sensitive

  398. and wise.

  399. You say,

  400. George,

  401. how on earth

  402. is this text

  403. telling me

  404. to be culturally

  405. sensitive and wise?

  406. I've only been

  407. to Israel once,

  408. I was able,

  409. I was blessed,

  410. I was able to go

  411. to Jerusalem in 2008

  412. and on the,

  413. and it was in the airport

  414. which is in Tel Aviv

  415. and I'm going to Jerusalem

  416. which is where my hotel is

  417. and there's a group

  418. of us all together

  419. and we arrange

  420. a bus

  421. that's going to take us

  422. from the airport

  423. in Tel Aviv

  424. into Jerusalem

  425. and on the bus

  426. are two men

  427. and let me tell you,

  428. from my

  429. white,

  430. Anglo-Saxon,

  431. Protestant,

  432. Canadian perspective,

  433. they yelled

  434. and screamed

  435. at each other

  436. for the entire ride.

  437. I mean,

  438. their voices

  439. were raised,

  440. they were doing

  441. this at each other,

  442. they were unbelievably

  443. energetic

  444. and if you came

  445. into my house

  446. and my wife

  447. and myself

  448. were talking

  449. to each other

  450. like that,

  451. you would think

  452. we desperately

  453. needed marriage

  454. counseling.

  455. But Israeli Jews

  456. don't talk

  457. to each other

  458. the way

  459. white,

  460. Anglo-Saxon,

  461. Protestant,

  462. Canadians

  463. talk to each other.

  464. So here's the thing

  465. which is so wise

  466. about the Bible.

  467. The Bible says

  468. I am to rebuke

  469. in the hope

  470. of repentance

  471. and then it's silent

  472. because it creates

  473. space

  474. for cultural,

  475. ethnic,

  476. racial differences

  477. in how you do that.

  478. Isn't the Bible

  479. really wise?

  480. Like Paul could have,

  481. Jesus could have said

  482. more things,

  483. Jesus was in a Jewish

  484. culture,

  485. he could have said

  486. a whole pile

  487. of other things

  488. about how to do this

  489. but he doesn't

  490. and the implication

  491. is that we have

  492. to learn,

  493. this is a radical

  494. thing for a lot

  495. of conservative

  496. Christians,

  497. we have to be

  498. culturally sensitive

  499. and wise.

  500. Jesus is telling

  501. us to do that.

  502. I mean,

  503. in a sense

  504. it would mean

  505. that if I was

  506. to go to Israel

  507. as a missionary,

  508. I would have to

  509. learn how to

  510. rebuke

  511. appropriate

  512. in Israel.

  513. If I was

  514. to go to Kenya,

  515. if I was

  516. to go to China,

  517. I would have

  518. to learn

  519. and in a sense

  520. if a missionary

  521. came from

  522. another place

  523. to here,

  524. they would have

  525. to learn that

  526. and we can't

  527. just baptize

  528. our own culture

  529. in terms of

  530. how to do it

  531. because there's

  532. different ways.

  533. I mean,

  534. I'll just give you

  535. two pieces of advice.

  536. I'm very bad

  537. at rebuking,

  538. by the way,

  539. it's one of my

  540. weaknesses,

  541. but I'll give you

  542. just two little

  543. pieces of advice

  544. that I try to practice

  545. and the two pieces

  546. of advice is

  547. always clarify

  548. before you rebuke

  549. because otherwise

  550. a lot of times

  551. you're rebuking

  552. for something

  553. that didn't happen

  554. that somebody else

  555. did that you

  556. misunderstood

  557. and really

  558. in an embarrassing

  559. way,

  560. you tell a person

  561. off for doing

  562. something and then

  563. they remind you

  564. that you told

  565. them six months

  566. earlier to do

  567. that and then

  568. you got mad

  569. at them,

  570. right?

  571. That's really

  572. embarrassing,

  573. so clarify.

  574. And the second

  575. thing,

  576. just from cultural

  577. perspective of Canada

  578. is always go

  579. after the action

  580. or the behavior,

  581. not the person.

  582. Don't go

  583. after intent.

  584. Intent is hard

  585. to understand.

  586. Don't accuse

  587. of intent

  588. as often as

  589. possible,

  590. but go after

  591. the behavior

  592. and not go

  593. after the intent

  594. or the person.

  595. And from a

  596. Canadian cultural

  597. perspective,

  598. that's how

  599. rebukes are more

  600. likely to be

  601. effective if the

  602. goal is

  603. repentance.

  604. If you don't

  605. care about

  606. repentance,

  607. tell them that

  608. they're a mean,

  609. evil,

  610. stupid,

  611. foolish person

  612. and they only

  613. mean,

  614. stupid,

  615. foolish,

  616. ignorant,

  617. evil things.

  618. And that sure

  619. leads lots of

  620. people to repent,

  621. let me tell you.

  622. It really works

  623. every time.

  624. You know,

  625. it just creates

  626. a fight,

  627. right?

  628. Or flight,

  629. avoidance.

  630. And so that's,

  631. you know,

  632. but you know,

  633. you read some

  634. things from the

  635. Middle Ages

  636. and Calvin

  637. and the Roman

  638. Catholics,

  639. they called

  640. each other

  641. all sorts of

  642. names.

  643. It was a

  644. culturally

  645. different time.

  646. See,

  647. that's why

  648. the Bible

  649. is so wise.

  650. One of the

  651. many reasons

  652. why I believe

  653. the Bible

  654. is the word

  655. of God

  656. is because

  657. of what's

  658. not in it.

  659. And here

  660. the Bible

  661. is very wise.

  662. It gives

  663. very,

  664. very wise

  665. advice,

  666. rebuke

  667. in the hope

  668. of repentance

  669. and that

  670. leaves us

  671. to figure out

  672. culturally

  673. how we do

  674. that for

  675. our culture,

  676. our time,

  677. in our

  678. context.

  679. And see,

  680. that's why

  681. I put the

  682. point this

  683. week is,

  684. dear God,

  685. please grow

  686. in me

  687. a deep

  688. and humble

  689. trust in

  690. you and

  691. free me

  692. up.

  693. That's for

  694. those of us

  695. who have a

  696. hard time

  697. doing it.

  698. Free me up

  699. to speak to

  700. the wrongdoer

  701. of the wrong

  702. they did

  703. to me

  704. and to

  705. forgive them.

  706. I'm not going

  707. to say much

  708. about forgiveness

  709. right now

  710. other than to

  711. tell you,

  712. I'm going to say

  713. two things.

  714. The first thing

  715. is this week

  716. in my blog,

  717. it's in your

  718. bulletins.

  719. I've written,

  720. I think,

  721. 14 theses

  722. around forgiveness.

  723. Hopefully that

  724. will help

  725. some of you

  726. to understand

  727. a little bit

  728. what forgiveness

  729. is and what it

  730. isn't.

  731. I also preached

  732. a couple of

  733. sermons on it.

  734. I think last

  735. spring I preached

  736. one on choose

  737. forgiveness or

  738. the spiritual

  739. discipline of

  740. forgiveness.

  741. So I'm going

  742. to say,

  743. I just encourage

  744. you to look

  745. at that.

  746. But here's

  747. the other

  748. thing,

  749. that for a

  750. follower of

  751. Jesus,

  752. this all has

  753. a specific

  754. type of

  755. cast.

  756. Because the

  757. way the

  758. gospel of

  759. Luke is

  760. written is

  761. that in Luke

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  762. chapter 9,

  763. Jesus tells

  764. his disciples,

  765. I'm going to

  766. Jerusalem,

  767. I'm going to

  768. be betrayed,

  769. I'm going to

  770. die,

  771. I'm going to

  772. rise again.

  773. And everything

  774. now from the

  775. book of Luke,

  776. from 9 on to

  777. 9,

  778. when he gets

  779. crucified,

  780. it's all about

  781. Jesus going to

  782. Jerusalem to

  783. die.

  784. And you see,

  785. here's the

  786. thing,

  787. I try to

  788. describe that

  789. our mission

  790. is to make

  791. disciples of

  792. Jesus gripped

  793. by the gospel

  794. who live for

  795. his glory.

  796. And what

  797. happens in

  798. the cross?

  799. You see,

  800. for Jesus,

  801. it's not as if

  802. he says this

  803. morality thing

  804. and this

  805. wisdom type of

  806. thing and is

  807. completely and

  808. utterly divorced

  809. from him going

  810. to the cross.

  811. what happens

  812. in the cross?

  813. In the cross,

  814. God reveals

  815. and rebukes

  816. sin.

  817. In fact,

  818. one of the

  819. things that

  820. happens as we

  821. grow in the

  822. Christian life

  823. is that we

  824. don't really

  825. understand the

  826. depth of our

  827. sin until we

  828. follow Jesus

  829. and realize just

  830. how, in a

  831. sense, bad

  832. and deadly

  833. and pervasive

  834. sin is that

  835. Jesus had to

  836. die.

  837. He had to

  838. leave heaven to

  839. die upon the

  840. cross for us.

  841. It's a direct

  842. confrontation,

  843. revealing and

  844. rebuking of

  845. sin and it's

  846. also a profound

  847. act of

  848. forgiveness.

  849. And that's what

  850. happens in the

  851. cross.

  852. Jesus is going

  853. to Jerusalem to

  854. die.

  855. He's going to

  856. Jerusalem to die

  857. not for himself

  858. but for you and

  859. me and for all

  860. the people who

  861. are listening.

  862. And on the

  863. cross, he will

  864. deal with sin.

  865. He reveals that

  866. sin exists.

  867. He deals with

  868. it and it's a

  869. profound act of

  870. forgiveness.

  871. And so it is

  872. that as we're

  873. gripped with what

  874. Jesus did for us

  875. on the cross,

  876. there's the

  877. possibility for us

  878. to start to be

  879. freed up and to

  880. understand that

  881. there is a

  882. time in our

  883. lives where we

  884. have to confront

  885. the wrong that

  886. was done to us.

  887. But mindful of

  888. the cross, we

  889. are to confront

  890. in such a way

  891. that there is a

  892. hope of

  893. forgiveness, that

  894. they will repent

  895. and that we

  896. will forgive

  897. them.

  898. And as I say

  899. in the little

  900. thesis, sometimes

  901. we need to pray

  902. for decades to

  903. forgive a person,

  904. but the journey

  905. and the road to

  906. forgive is always

  907. worth it.

  908. And that's why

  909. the prayer that

  910. Jesus, I think,

  911. is calling us to

  912. pray is, dear

  913. God, please grow

  914. in me a deep and

  915. humble trust in

  916. you and free me

  917. up to speak to

  918. the wrongdoer of

  919. the wrong they did

  920. to me and to

  921. forgive him.

  922. But some of

  923. you might say,

  924. George, well,

  925. that sounds sort

  926. of interesting,

  927. but I think, I

  928. don't know if

  929. you're really quite

  930. understanding the

  931. words of Jesus.

  932. I mean, you know,

  933. one of the things,

  934. George, I think about

  935. religious and

  936. spiritual people is

  937. that it's really

  938. ultimately all about

  939. power.

  940. And, you know,

  941. even if they

  942. forgive a person,

  943. it's really a way

  944. of trying to get

  945. power over them.

  946. Them being busy

  947. bodies is all about

  948. power.

  949. And, George,

  950. wasn't there a thing

  951. that comes immediately

  952. after that that

  953. talks about how

  954. if you have faith,

  955. you can move, you

  956. know, sycamine trees

  957. and mulberry trees.

  958. And isn't that all

  959. about Jesus just

  960. telling us to have

  961. power?

  962. Like, aren't you

  963. sort of misunderstanding

  964. and misreading the

  965. text?

  966. Don't you really think

  967. that Christians are

  968. still just one form of

  969. trying to get a type

  970. of cultural power over

  971. other people and that

  972. Jesus is encouraging

  973. this by talking about

  974. having the faith to

  975. move these objects?

  976. Like, George, don't

  977. you think that's what's

  978. going on?

  979. Well, let's look.

  980. What is it that Jesus

  981. says immediately after

  982. that?

  983. I don't think he

  984. contradicts himself at

  985. all.

  986. In fact, I think what

  987. happens is that the

  988. natural human religion

  989. and natural human

  990. spirituality is about

  991. power.

  992. And because, and even

  993. Christians, affected

  994. just as much as

  995. everybody else by

  996. natural human religion

  997. and natural human

  998. spirituality, that when

  999. we read the text, we

  1000. bring the natural, the

  1001. fleshly, to interpret

  1002. the words of Jesus

  1003. rather than letting

  1004. the words of Jesus

1005. come to the heart of

  1006. who we are.

  1007. Look at verses five

  1008. and six.

  1009. The apostle said to

  1010. the Lord, increase our

  1011. faith.

  1012. Maybe after he told

  1013. them they had to

  1014. forgive, he said, I'm

1015. going to need a lot

1016. more faith if I can

  1017. forgive.

  1018. Let me tell you.

  1019. Increase our faith.

1020. And the Lord said, if

1021. you had faith like a

  1022. grain of mustard seed.

  1023. In Jewish times, it

  1024. was proverbial for

  1025. very, very, very tiny.

1026. If you had faith like a

  1027. grain of mustard seed,

  1028. you could say to

  1029. this mulberry tree, it's

1030. a tree that, in the

  1031. original language, it's

1032. a tree that would grow

1033. to about 20 feet and it

1034. was known for having a

  1035. very large root system.

1036. So if you had faith like

1037. a grain of mustard seed,

1038. you could say to this

  1039. mulberry tree, be uprooted

1040. and planted in the sea and

  1041. it would obey you.

1042. So is this text just

1043. talking to us about a

  1044. type of spiritual power?

  1045. more.

1046. Is this text a rebuke of

  1047. our congregation because

  1048. we don't have a building

  1049. of our own?

1050. And if we had more faith,

  1051. we have a building.

1052. Is this text telling us

  1053. we're all sinners?

1054. Well, it does tell us we're

1055. sinners, but not in that

  1056. particular way.

1057. I'm going to put it up.

1058. If you could put up the

1059. next point here in terms of

1060. how it's going to work as

  1061. a prayer.

1062. And by the way, if you're

1063. worrying this is going to be

  1064. an 80-minute sermon, the

  1065. longest point was the

1066. first one and it'll get

  1067. shorter.

  1068. But here's, I think, what

1069. Jesus is asking us to do.

1070. Dear God, please grow in

  1071. me a humble, trusting

  1072. walking.

1073. And I say walking, the

1074. Bible uses the image of

1075. walking as a way to

  1076. understand how we live

  1077. our 24-7 day.

1078. How do we live our 365 days

  1079. a year 24-7?

1080. Well, we walk from spot to

1081. spot to spot to spot.

1082. And I'm trying to capture

  1083. that biblical idea in

1084. terms of a prayer, in

1085. terms of just how we live

1086. our lives, how we go to

1087. Starbucks, how we buy our

1088. groceries, how we do at

1089. work, how we are with our

1090. family and our friends, how

1091. we are with our leisure.

  1092. It's walking.

1093. We go from one thing to

  1094. another.

1095. And I think the text is

  1096. encouraging us to pray,

1097. Dear God, please grow in

  1098. me a humble, trusting,

  1099. walking, knowing of the

  1100. greatness and glory and

1101. grace of the person and

  1102. work of Jesus Messiah.

  1103. I think that's a great

  1104. prayer that you could

  1105. pray every day.

1106. I could pray every day

1107. for the rest of my life.

1108. Dear God, please grow in

  1109. me a humble, trusting,

  1110. walking, knowing of the

  1111. greatness and glory and

1112. grace of the person and

  1113. work of Jesus Messiah.

1114. Some of you might say,

1115. George, how on earth do

1116. you get that from the

  1117. text?

  1118. Well, the problem is,

  1119. remember I said how

  1120. natural human religion and

  1121. natural human spirituality

1122. does turn it into all being

  1123. about power?

1124. Faith always has an object.

  1125. Faith isn't an emotion.

  1126. Faith isn't a type of

  1127. self-talk.

  1128. Faith has an object.

1129. We have faith in something

  1130. or someone.

1131. So when we turn it into

1132. about power, we turn it

1133. into something that if I

1134. have the right type of

1135. willpower, the right type of

1136. emotion, the right type of

1137. ritual, the right type of

  1138. church connection, the right

1139. team of people praying, if I

1140. get these things right, I will

  1141. accomplish this.

1142. We rarely are so publicly

1143. bold to say that because we

1144. start to check ourselves and

1145. say, no, no, no, no, no, that's

1146. sin, but in our hearts,

  1147. murmuring, the voice murmuring

1148. into our ears is I get my

1149. willpower or my emotion and I

1150. get this and I get my

1151. techniques and I get the right

1152. principles and I get this

1153. straight and I get to do this

  1154. powerful thing.

1155. But Jesus, he's standing there.

  1156. And it's so cool.

1157. Judas is standing there, the

1158. man who's going to betray

  1159. him.

1160. Jesus knows that he's going to

1161. Jerusalem to die, giving you

1162. away the story if you haven't

1163. read the story, but every one of

1164. his disciples is not going to

1165. have faith in him when the time

  1166. comes when he's arrested.

1167. They all abandon him and leave

  1168. him.

1169. And he knows that Judas is going

  1170. to betray him.

1171. And he knows that he's going to

1172. Jerusalem to die on the cross

1173. to reconcile people to God.

1174. And he knows that he's doing

1175. this because God has been

1176. faithful to his word and God

1177. promised a mighty deliverer and

  1178. God promised redemption.

1179. And Jesus has done his entire

1180. life on earth as God, the son of

1181. God and also the son of Mary.

1182. And he's done it in obedience to

  1183. the father.

1184. And he knows the father is

  1185. faithful.

1186. And he's asking the disciples to

  1187. have faith in him.

1188. And if we take this prayer and try

1189. to pray about how we can do great

1190. things, very subtly our focus

1191. becomes on willpower or emotion in

1192. ourselves or our techniques or our

  1193. membership because evangelicals do

1194. things better or Anglicans do things

1195. better, Roman Catholics do things

  1196. better, Pentecostals do things

1197. better or Charismatics do something

  1198. better.

1199. And he's asking us to focus on

  1200. Jesus.

1201. He's asking them to have faith in

  1202. him.

1203. And then if in a sense they have

1204. that faith in him, in the context

1205. of this ever deepening personal

  1206. relationship with him, requests

  1207. emerge.

1208. And those requests that emerge come

1209. from a very, very tiny little bit of

  1210. faith within them.

1211. But Jesus can do, God can do amazing

  1212. things.

1213. You know, it's all about Jesus is

1214. calling them to trust in him.

1215. And the increasing of the faith, the

1216. adding to the faith is adding faith to

1217. faith to faith to faith, a deepening in

1218. trust, not adding willpower, emotion,

  1219. technique, mind control, church

1220. allegiance, or any other type of thing,

  1221. proper ancestors.

1222. Not adding anything like that, but just

1223. a deepening into a walk with him.

1224. And that's why I say that Jesus is

1225. calling us to call out to him and pray,

1226. Dear God, please grow in me a humble,

1227. trusting, walking, knowing of the

1228. greatness and glory and grace of the

1229. person and work of Jesus, Messiah.

1230. But then some of you might say, George,

  1231. that's, here's the thing, here's the

1232. problem I have with Jesus is teaching.

1233. Because, you know, I've been looking

1234. around at the Bible while you're talking,

  1235. I'm still listening, but I'm also

  1236. looking around.

1237. But, George, in a few moments, Jesus is

1238. going to tell us to call my, he's going

1239. to tell me to call myself unworthy.

1240. And, George, let me just tell you, I

1241. have enough people stepping on me and

  1242. making me feel unworthy.

1243. You know, I have people who make catty

1244. comments about how I dress or my

1245. weight or, you know, I have, I go on

1246. Facebook and it just seems like everybody

1247. else is way, they have, you know, they

1248. have kids, I'd like to have kids, or I

1249. have kids and my kids are just like so-so.

1250. I mean, I never tell my kids that because

  1251. I love them and they're mine.

1252. But everybody else's kids seem to become

1253. rocket scientists, Olympic athletes, you

1254. know, popular, you know, all that type of

  1255. stuff.

1256. And I already feel unworthy.

1257. Like, how on earth does Jesus think I'm

1258. going to accomplish anything if I have to

1259. say to him that I'm unworthy?

1260. If I have to try to feel unworthy?

1261. Like, do I just sort of, George, think

1262. that Jesus is greater and greater and

1263. greater and therefore I am, you know,

1264. more worm-like and terrible and bad?

1265. And is that how it works, George?

  1266. If that's how it works, like, I don't

1267. want to do that because there's enough

  1268. thing.

1269. You know, that's the thing about

  1270. religion.

1271. It keeps telling me I have to grovel.

1272. In fact, George, you have a perfect thing

  1273. right here.

1274. Religion is all about balancing

  1275. groveling and power.

1276. Moving mulberry trees and sane and

  1277. unworthy.

  1278. Grovel and power.

  1279. Grovel and power.

  1280. Grovel and power.

  1281. I don't like the dance.

1282. I'd rather just have a drink and watch

  1283. the football game.

1284. And that's how a lot of people

1285. understand and hear the words.

1286. Well, what does Jesus say?

  1287. Let's look.

  1288. Verse 7.

1289. So remember, he just said, be uprooted

1290. and planted in the sea that will obey

  1291. you.

  1292. Verse 7.

1293. Well, any one of you who has a

1294. servant, and I'm just going to pause

  1295. here.

1296. And the word servant, some of you have

1297. heard this before, that the word in

1298. Greek, and I don't usually like using

1299. Greek words, but the word in Greek

  1300. is doulos.

1301. And the problem is that doulos means

  1302. something different.

1303. And some of your English versions say

  1304. slave, some say servant.

1305. And the problem is that there's no

1306. English word that captures doulos.

1307. When you use the word slave, you think

1308. of what happened to that.

1309. You know, if you haven't seen the movie,

  1310. it's a very powerful movie, 12 years

  1311. a slave.

  1312. Very powerful movie.

1313. And so you see the word slave, our

1314. minds instantly go to something like

  1315. 12 years a slave.

1316. But you see the word servant, our

1317. minds, at least if you're of my age, you

1318. instantly think of the Fresh Prince of

1319. Bel-Air, where the only competent,

1320. reasonable person in the entire

  1321. household was the servant.

  1322. Right?

1323. And the Bible, and so in our culture,

1324. we think of, you know, people with,

1325. you know, who are just servants who are

1326. really the only competent, sane person

1327. in the household, actually does

  1328. anything.

1329. So we either think of servant or we

1330. think of slave in it.

1331. Doulos means something very, very

  1332. different.

1333. Because in the ancient world, I mean,

1334. a doulos could end up, like if you go

1335. in the book of, if you go in the book

  1336. of Acts, you'll see that there's a

1337. meeting of a person who's the treasurer

1338. of an entire country, and he would have

  1339. been a doulos.

1340. So it means that you belong to somebody,

1341. and you can't control yourself.

1342. You are, in a sense, are under orders,

1343. and you belong to them.

  1344. But it doesn't necessarily, it doesn't

1345. mean the degradation of slavery the way

1346. we think of it, and it doesn't mean

1347. the type of snarkiness that we think

1348. of with servant, but it does convey

1349. the idea of belonging to another and

1350. under their authority and command.

1351. Like maybe a better analogy would be

  1352. if they're in the soldier, they're

  1353. private.

1354. Don't think general, think private.

  1355. Okay?

1356. Maybe corporal or something, but even

1357. then that doesn't get quite right,

1358. because in a sense a colonel is under

  1359. a general as well.

1360. So it's just, I'm going to use the word

1361. doulos in the point in a moment.

  1362. But let's, sorry, verse 7.

1363. Will any of you, any one of you who has

1364. a doulos, plowing or keeping sheep,

1365. say to him when he has come in from

1366. the field, come at once and recline at

  1367. table?

1368. Will he not rather say to him, prepare

1369. supper for me and dress properly, and

1370. serve me while I eat and drink, and

1371. afterward you will eat and drink?

1372. Does he thank the servant because he did

  1373. what he was commanded?

1374. See, all of these things, it's

  1375. rhetorical.

1376. He's expecting you to agree.

1377. No, you wouldn't come in and serve the

  1378. servant.

  1379. The servant serves you.

1380. That's how the world works.

  1381. You know?

1382. Would the servant ask the word thank

1383. because the servant's done their duty?

1384. No, the servant wouldn't particularly

  1385. expect thanks.

1386. It's not encouraging us to be rude to

1387. staff at Starbucks or Target while it

  1388. still exists in Canada.

1389. It's just talking, trying to understand

1390. this is the way the world works.

1391. And then in verse 10, so you also, when you

1392. have done all that you were commanded, say, we

  1393. are unworthy servants.

1394. We have only done, or we are unworthy

  1395. doulos.

1396. We have only done what was our duty.

1397. So here's the prayer, and then I'll just

  1398. briefly explain it.

1399. Dear God, by grace, I am your doulos.

1400. Please grow in me a deep, obedient, and

1401. humble trust in you as my master who commands

  1402. me.

1403. See, here's what the text is talking about.

1404. We sort of come at it from a wrong type of way.

1405. If I was to tell you that, you know, one of the

1406. single women here, that in 10 years' time, you're

1407. going to be, there's going to be a man who

1408. structures your life that helps to determine when

1409. you come home and how much money you spend on

1410. clothes and all of that type of stuff.

1411. If I just said there'll be a man like that, people

1412. might, women might feel very deeply resented about.

1413. Same thing for if I said to a man about a woman

  1414. doing that.

1415. But I can tell you right now that for 33 years, I've

1416. not made my own decisions about a whole pile of

1417. things, and I've had someone tell me what I'm

1418. going to have for supper and contribute to where

1419. we're going for holidays and all sorts of things, and

1420. that's been a real blessing for me to be married to

  1421. Louise for 33 years.

1422. You see, the problem is that we often mistake the

1423. problem of authority with the problem of authority is

1424. ultimately a problem of intimacy and of love and of

  1425. trust.

1426. And so many of us have been in organizations like

1427. churches or corporations where there is no trust, where

1428. they don't care about, they only care about the bottom

1429. line, they don't care about the employees.

1430. And many of us maybe have been in marriages that have

1431. broken down or have been very abusive and haven't broken

1432. down, and so we tend to interpret the entire world through

1433. the lens of rights and stuff like that.

1434. But Jesus here, even though when he's using the slave, you

1435. see, this is why the slave and servant thing doesn't really

  1436. work.

1437. There could be real affection between the doulos and the

  1438. master.

1439. And it's not, we have to think in terms of intimacy and trust.

1440. You see, once again, remember, Jesus is telling us about

  1441. this.

1442. And who is the man who's telling us?

  1443. What is the gospel?

1444. The gospel is that Jesus is the second person of the

  1445. Trinity.

1446. And the Father says to the second person of the Trinity that

1447. the only way that human beings can be reconciled to me, they

  1448. cannot do it themselves.

  1449. They are spiritually dead.

1450. And only I can do something.

1451. Only we can do something because they cannot save themselves.

1452. And the nature of sin and the nature of our rebellion is such

1453. that the Father says to his son, you need to become human.

1454. You need to set aside your glory and divine prerogatives and

1455. your power and set all of that stuff aside.

1456. And all you leave is your very nature and you're going to be

  1457. born.

1458. I know you created the planets.

1459. I know you hold all things in existence.

1460. And I know that your hands that have formed the planets and the

1461. stars and the galaxies, that I'm asking you to have a little

1462. tiny baby's hand that can't even reach your mother's nose.

1463. But I'm asking you to set aside all your glory and power and

1464. divine prerogatives, your splendor and remaining God to be born and

1465. take into yourself human nature and to be born, to be in a womb and

1466. to be born and to walk amongst the created order.

1467. And then to continue to humble yourself until death upon the cross.

1468. And as you die upon the cross, you die not for your own sins, but you

1469. will actually bear and taste upon your very person the sin and the

1470. rebellion of these human beings who are crucifying you.

1471. And that is the means by which my power to save will enter into the

1472. created order so that all who put their trust in you can be

  1473. reconciled to me.

1474. And that's the person who's telling us this.

1475. That's the one who's telling us this.

1476. See, as the gospel grips us, there is this possibility that we will

1477. have new desires and new ways of understanding these challenges.

1478. And so it's not that Jesus is telling us not to have any type of self-esteem,

1479. but he's telling us in a sense not to keep our eyes on ourselves while we're

1480. trying to navigate these things.

1481. You know, many people of us, I find myself sometimes walking around as if the

1482. weight of this church rests on me or the weight of some other organization

1483. rests on me. And it is such a gracious moment in heaven.

1484. Maybe I'll find out that just as that is seeming to bear me down as I'm walking

1485. along like this, and maybe I will find in heaven that the reason that this

1486. thought comes into my head is because one of you or somebody else has been

1487. praying for me that very, very second.

1488. And it's as if sometimes, and may it come more and more and more, it's as if God

1489. speaks to me and says, George, you do not carry the weight of your family.

1490. You do not carry the weight of your marriage.

1491. You do not carry the weight of the church.

1492. You do not carry the weight of evangelism.

1493. You do not carry that weight.

1494. My son, Jesus, he carries that weight and he carries you.

1495. It's my work, not yours.

1496. And it's my work, and as part of my work, you're my servant.

  1497. I carry that weight.

1498. Jesus carried the weight of the sins of the world on his shoulders and his person.

  1499. He carries you.

  1500. You're his doulos.

1501. You see, this text is inviting us to understand that God is big and I am small,

  1502. and that's a really good thing.

1503. And you know how it is, like, if you come to our office and you park in the back

1504. and you want to get out, the walls are very close.

1505. And the way you understand how you get through something which is very close,

1506. if you spend all your time looking at yourself or looking at the walls,

  1507. you'll hit the walls.

1508. You look between all those things and away from yourself at the end,

1509. and then you go through it.

1510. And that's what Jesus is telling us about here is we keep our eyes on the master.

1511. We keep our eyes on God.

1512. And we listen to his direction.

1513. Just as if you're trying to navigate a parking spot and the walls are really bad,

1514. and you have a person at the end and they're going like this and they're going like that,

1515. and you keep your eyes on them and you get through it.

1516. That's what Jesus is telling us about.

1517. That's why we are to pray, dear God, by grace, I am your doulos.

1518. By grace, I am your doulos.

  1519. You are the master.

1520. It is your work to save.

1521. It is your work to carry the church.

1522. It is your work to carry the churches in the city.

1523. It's your work to carry Anik.

1524. It's your work to carry my children and their spouses and their future spouses

  1525. and my grandchildren.

  1526. It's your work.

  1527. I am your doulos.

1528. By grace, thank you, Jesus.

1529. I do not have to carry that.

1530. I do not have to carry that.

  1531. Neither do you.

1532. By grace, I am your doulos.

1533. Please grow in me a deep, obedient, and humble trust in you as my master who commands me.

  1534. Just one final thing.

1535. Some of you might say, George, that's all right for you.

1536. You have these religious affections.

1537. You have these religious emotions.

1538. I'm just an ordinary person.

  1539. I find this strange.

1540. You know, sometimes when I'm at work and people at work talk about this and that,

1541. and I wish I could have that type of faith.

1542. I wish I could have those types of things.

1543. But I just don't have those emotions.

1544. Can you tell me how to get those emotions?

1545. I can't tell you how to get emotions.

1546. I'm not talking about willpower.

1547. All I can do is time and time and time and time again tell you about Jesus and the cross.

1548. And that says, you hear about Jesus and the cross.

  1549. And it grips you.

1550. You hear about what he does for us.

1551. That maybe we have the courage to pray this prayer.

1552. And for some of us, when we pray any one of these three prayers in the next one that I'm going to give you,

1553. for some of us, it's the invitation at the same time for Jesus to plant faith in us and then to grow it.

1554. But for all of us, even for those who have now put our faith and trust in Jesus,

1555. remember Jesus has told us we should ask him to grow our faith.

1556. That's why all of these prayers are in terms of growing.

1557. So just one final text.

1558. We're going to read the final parable.

1559. But before we do, I'm going to give you the point.

1560. I'm going to read verses 11 to 19 in closing.

1561. But Andrew, if you could put up the final prayer to help us understand this final story.

1562. Dear God, please grow in me a deep, humble, thankful trust in Jesus,

1563. who has healed my deepest wound and saved me by his death upon the cross.

1564. Dear God, please grow in me a deep, humble, thankful trust in Jesus,

1565. who has healed my deepest wound and saved me by his death upon the cross.

1566. Every miracle of healing in the gospel points to the fact that on the cross,

1567. Jesus deals with our deepest wound, a wound which is fatal, which has made us dead.

1568. And that God heals the wound, brings life, that we can be his child.

1569. And that's why the healing miracles in the gospel are so important,

1570. because it points to this profound, deep wound, the deepest wound we have,

1571. which is our separation from the living creator of all things,

1572. the true creator and sustainer and end of the whole created order.

1573. And we are alienated from him.

1574. And on the cross, Jesus brings life and heals the wound at the same time.

1575. And that's what salvation is.

1576. And we see it here in this story.

1577. Verse 11, on the way to Jerusalem, Jesus was passing along between Samaria and Galilee.

1578. And some scholars have problems with that because Jesus is not a type A driven individual

1579. who wants to get from where he is to Jerusalem in the shortest possible time.

  1580. People be set aside.

  1581. I almost said a bad word.

1582. And Jesus doesn't take the direct fast route that ignores people.

1583. He takes the compassionate route, which means he takes all these detours to deal with people.

1584. It's not a problem in the text, just not understanding Jesus.

1585. Verse 11, on the way to Jerusalem, he was passing between Samaria and Galilee.

1586. And as he entered a village, he was met by 10 lepers who stood at a distance.

1587. And in all cultures, I mean, lepers, they would be missing limbs.

1588. They would be quite disfigured.

1589. They would be social outcasts, unclean.

1590. And so they're keeping their distance.

1591. They call out to Jesus.

  1592. We have no idea.

1593. They've probably heard he does miracles.

  1594. They don't know.

1595. It's not really clear what on earth they think he's going to do.

1596. But what do they do when they see him?

1597. They say, Jesus, master, have mercy on us.

1598. And Jesus, when he sees them, says, go and show yourselves to the priests.

1599. And, you know, the Bible doesn't tell us what goes through their mind.

1600. But maybe they're mindful of the story of Naaman the Syrian, from Syria in the Old Testament,

1601. where part of Naaman's healing was to go to do something.

1602. And so they just say, OK, well, we'll go.

1603. All their faith was was just to go, to follow this word of what Jesus told them to do and to go.

1604. And as they went, they were cleansed.

1605. Now, what this means here is it means they were healed.

1606. And I don't know what that means entirely.

1607. You know, one of the things about it is that health is natural.

1608. And because health is natural, we don't usually feel health.

  1609. We feel pain.

1610. And I don't know if it means that as they were walking around along and they're walking there

1611. and they're walking like this and all of a sudden, without them realizing it,

1612. their fingers have grown back out.

1613. But they don't realize it because it's natural to have fingers.

1614. And they're walking along and maybe their toes, which have been missed, all of a sudden are back.

1615. And then maybe as they're walking like this, one of them happens to look and says,

  1616. Joseph has toes.

1617. And then they looked and they realized they pointed with a finger.

1618. And they didn't used to have a finger.

1619. And they realized they've been healed in a most dramatic way.

1620. And the text goes on.

1621. And then one of them, verse 15, when he saw that he was healed,

1622. turned back, goes back to Jesus, praising God with a loud voice.

1623. This isn't a time to go to a priest.

1624. It's time to go to God.

1625. Not time to go to church.

1626. Time to go to God.

1627. And he fell on his face at Jesus.

1628. He prostrated at Jesus' feet, giving him thanks.

1629. And he was a Samaritan, which means he didn't believe the right things.

1630. He was all confused about the Bible, all confused about God.

1631. And he wasn't part of the people of promise by the flesh.

1632. Then Jesus said, we're not 10 clans.

  1633. We're the nine.

1634. Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?

1635. You know what's so wonderful about that word foreigner?

  1636. It says stranger.

1637. I mean, a few folks, some of you are here and you think you're foreign,

1638. and it's foreign and strange to talk about having this faith and trust in Jesus.

1639. All I can do is tell you that when Jesus looks at you, he looks and he speaks to this man with the eyes of love,

1640. and he calls him foreigner.

  1641. And it's so neat.

1642. The man's at Jesus' feet.

  1643. He's praising God.

1644. Jesus has obviously accepted him.

1645. In a moment, he's going to tell him that not only was he physically healed, but he was spiritually saved.

1646. And the word foreigner is the word that in the temple would be a big word.

1647. If you are a foreigner, you cannot go any closer into the temple.

1648. We are keeping you away from God.

1649. And Jesus used that word to say that the man was saved.

1650. No one is too foreign or too strange or too broken or too absent of religious affections or religious willpowers

1651. that Jesus cannot save you and welcome you as his own.

1652. And he said to him, rise, go your way.

1653. Your faith has saved you.

1654. And so we are invited to pray, dear God, please grow in me a deep, humble, thankful trust in Jesus,

1655. who has healed my deepest wound and saved me by his death upon the cross.

  1656. Please stand.

1657. Just bow our heads in prayer.

1658. Father, for some of us, as we pray these prayers, we don't know if we have had faith in you,

1659. but we want you to give us that faith.

1660. We want you to give us that faith and we want you to grow it in us, Father.

  1661. Grow it in us.

1662. For all of us here, Father, it's the cry of our heart, even for those of us who have had faith in Jesus for many years,

1663. that you would grow that faith in us, that you might grow a humble, yearning, longing, walking, knowing, trust in us.

1664. Grow a trust in us and a longing and a yearning and a resting and an availability and a thankfulness in you,

1665. for Jesus, the Messiah, for what you've done upon the cross for us and who you are, for your love for us.

1666. Father, grow that within us.

1667. And this we ask, grow that within us.

1668. Make us disciples gripped by the gospel who live for your glory.

1669. And all this we ask in the name of Jesus, your Son and our Savior.

  1670. Amen.
