  1. Okay, how you guys doing?

  2. Really?

  3. Hey, we are...

  4. So if you're new here, my name is Tobin.

  5. I'm one of the pastors here.

  6. And we are glad that you're here with us as a family at Watermark.

  7. You know, when we...

  8. So in October, 10 will be five years old.

  9. And when we started the church, or started praying about the church and what to do,

  10. and what kind of church God would have us to be,

  11. I remember the meeting as clear as day.

  12. One time somebody just said, so what are we going to name the church?

  13. And we never really thought about a name of a church or what that would look like or things like that.

  14. And so about 20 of us just started praying, and we started listing out a whiteboard,

  15. and we got all these types of names out there.

  16. And we started thinking about what kind of church does God want us to be,

  17. and what does He have us here for?

  18. What is our purpose on this western side of Hong Kong Island?

  19. And we came up with this idea of...

  20. We wanted to call...

  21. We felt like God was calling us a church Watermark.

  22. And we picked the idea of Watermark because we realized that, you know,

  23. like on paper and on different types of things, that Watermark is a symbol.

  24. It's kind of a symbol of authenticity.

  25. It's something that you can see, and you can look up, and you can say,

  26. okay, is this genuine or not?

  27. And we do it on money or other things.

  28. But there's a Watermark there.

  29. But we realized also that God's fingerprint, His Watermark is on everything in creation.

  30. He's put His fingerprint on you, whether you know that or not, His Watermark on you.

  31. And we realized as a church that as our responsibility is to bring God's light,

  32. His Word, His Spirit, the community out there,

  33. and as we did that, that things would become clearer.

  34. We'd understand why we exist and why we're here as people, of His people,

  35. and why we're on this journey.

  36. We also realized that water is this big change agent.

  37. And we really feel like God was calling us to be a church that made a difference.

  38. One of the questions we ask our staff all the time is,

  39. if the church wasn't here, would this part of Hong Kong be any different?

  40. Would people miss the church not being here?

  41. And our prayer and our hope is that the answer would be yes,

  42. that something would be missing, there'd be something lacking.

  43. You know, about six or seven years ago, when Christine and I were praying,

  44. and we were talking about, okay, so what are we going to do with this church?

  45. As God's calling us to plant this church, how are we going to do it?

  46. What will we look like?

  47. We just start asking people, what is a church supposed to look like?

  48. I mean, literally, we've been in church all our lives, almost,

  49. but we wanted to say, what do you want your church to look like?

  50. What is a church supposed to look like?

  51. And we asked people who were churched, we asked people who were unchurched,

  52. we asked people who were de-churched, people who had just given up on church,

  53. and they'd been in church for so long, and they just felt a burden or this heaviness,

  54. and so they just gave up on church.

  55. And so we asked everybody, what does a church look like?

  56. What do you want a new church to look like?

  57. And here's some of the responses that we got as we were praying through that.

  58. Some people would say stuff like, I want a church that never asked me to do anything.

  59. I'm already too busy in Hong Kong, and I'm just so busy with clubs and Bible studies

  60. and other things I'm doing, I need a church that will just ask me to do nothing.

  61. If you can do a church that asks me to do nothing, that's the type of church that I want to be about.

  62. And Christina and I would just look at each other afterwards, and we were like, okay.

  63. But, you know, inside, we hurt.

  64. I mean, often I feel like Charlie Brown, you know, in the movies.

  65. Charlie Brown goes around, and all he can say is, good grief, you know.

  66. So I have a question.

  67. Anybody want to be a pastor?

  68. It's crazy as you look at these things.

  69. But, you know, as we look at these things and what we struggle with in our lives,

  70. we realize that Paul, in this passage, and his church, they struggled with the same things.

  71. The church of Corinth, they struggled with this idea of self-centeredness.

  72. They struggled with this idea of selfishness.

  73. They struggled with this idea of serving.

  74. They struggled with this idea of gifts.

  75. I mean, they basically said they struggled with this idea of what does it really mean to be a Christian?

  76. What does it mean to be spiritual?

  77. How do I know that I'm really the Christian that God has called me to be?

  78. And so what I want to do is we look at this passage here.

  79. I want to look at three things.

  80. I want to look at what is Paul talking to us about?

  81. What does it mean to be spiritual?

  82. He gives us a test in what it looks like so that we can know if we're spiritual or not spiritual.

  83. He's going to talk about these gifts that he's going to give us

  84. and these gifts that he's giving us to serve each other.

  85. And we want to look at those and talk about and lay down this foundation.

  86. We're going to talk about this for like three or four weeks.

  87. And so there's going to be a lot here.

  88. And as you look at it, you're like, okay, I have all these questions.

  89. And if your question doesn't get answered today, hopefully it will in the next three or four weeks.

  90. And then I have some questions for us afterwards.

  91. Does that make sense?

  92. So where we're going is we want to look at what it means to be spiritual.

  93. We want to look at this test that we can decide, are we really the people that God has called us to be?

  94. We want to look at these gifts that God's given us to walk through this journey in life.

  95. And then we want to ask some questions.

  96. Okay?

  97. Now, if you've been with us for any period of time, you realize that the church in Corinth, they have been struggling.

  98. They've come out of this culture that is probably the most immoral and out-of-control culture that I've ever read about in the known world.

  99. It was full of idols.

  100. It was full of bad influences.

  101. The church had these habits.

  102. I know none of us have these habits, but the church had these habits.

  103. And these habits were stuff like pride and self-centeredness and arrogance and selfishness.

  104. And what happened is as the church was going on this journey, these things just kept coming up and coming up and coming up.

  105. And when these self-centeredness and selfishness comes up in chapters, we've been reading them in 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 today.

  106. What you see is a self-centeredness and this pride just starts to fracture the church.

  107. Instead of being a family, instead of being a community, they're just this group of individuals.

  108. And it's interesting because in this passage, in chapter 1, verses 5 through 7, Paul begins the book and he praises us.

  109. He praises them.

  110. He says, man, you guys have your act together.

  111. You're full of knowledge.

  112. You know how to use your gifts.

  113. You're doing really well.

  114. But here in this passage, Paul says, no.

  115. You don't know what you're doing.

  116. You don't know how to use your gifts.

  117. There's this lack of knowledge.

  118. There's this misunderstanding.

  119. And so if you look at verses 1 through 3, Paul begins to set out his argument for us, for the church.

  120. And what he says to them and what he says to us is this.

  121. He says there are two types of spirituality in all the world.

  122. There's two types.

  123. There's either true spirituality or there's false spirituality.

  124. And if you're in here right now, you're either being led by one of those two types of spirituality.

  125. He says that the true spirituality is being led by God's spirit.

  126. It's from God's word.

  127. It's from his character.

  128. And that a false spirituality is from the world and from demons and from scary things.

  129. And you've got to remember, I feel like I'm getting feedback up here, but you've got to remember as this church was going through life,

  130. they had come out of this crazy culture that was out of control.

  131. I mean, it wasn't too long before ago, it wasn't too long ago that all the people in the church were worshiping in pagan temples.

  132. It wasn't too long ago that all the people were involved in immoral acts as they came into their life.

  133. It wasn't too long ago that people entered into their temple and they asked questions like this.

  134. Does this make me feel good?

  135. Does this make me happy?

  136. Do I feel like I deserve this?

  137. Am I experiencing good things?

  138. It wasn't too long ago that the people in Paul's church in Corinth,

  139. everything they asked about and everything they talked about centered on themselves.

  140. They were the center of their focus.

  141. And listen to me here, guys, because this is, in Paul's day, in an ancient world,

  142. people would go to temples and they would experience miracles.

  143. I mean, they would enter into a temple and they would see incredible things.

  144. They would enter into temples and they would see visions.

  145. And people would talk about the future and people would talk about prophecy.

  146. They would enter into the temples where the sacrifices were happening, where the orgies were happening,

  147. and people would be healed.

  148. They would enter into the temple and people would see other people speaking in tongues.

  149. In many different strange languages.

  150. And they felt like power came upon them.

  151. And when they came into these temples, this power came upon them and it captivated everybody.

  152. And they felt great.

  153. I mean, there's a passage in Acts 8.

  154. As the disciples are going around and they're sharing the gospel, there's this guy named Simon.

  155. He's a magician.

  156. And it says that he actually had power and he was doing all of these miracles.

  157. And this power was coming from these demonic sources that were invading his life.

  158. And we're told that all of Samaria was captivated by this guy.

  159. I mean, this guy was doing all these miracles and it was amazing.

  160. And he was claiming to be great and everybody was following him.

  161. And then in Acts 16, we're told again, there's this slave girl.

  162. And she's possessed by a demon.

  163. And she's telling everybody his fortune.

  164. And she's telling everybody what's going to happen.

  165. And everybody is following her.

  166. And everybody knows where this power is coming from.

  167. And what Paul is saying to you and I, and he's saying to the church of Corinthian,

  168. is that everybody is spiritual.

  169. Everyone is spiritual.

  170. The question is, where is your spiritual power coming from?

  171. Where are you receiving that spirituality from?

  172. And so in verse 3, Paul just gives us a test.

  173. And it's a really simple test.

  174. I don't know why we haven't talked about it before, but we need to be talking about it all the time in the church.

  175. And this is what Paul says.

  176. Guys, if you want to test where your life is, if you want to test where your spirituality is coming from,

  177. you want to test where the power in you is coming from, all you need to do is take an oath.

  178. And this oath was something that everybody did every day in Corinth.

  179. And this is what you would do.

  180. You'd get out of your house, you'd go to work, and as you walk into the marketplace to do your work,

  181. to do your business, to buy your goods, you would see a statue of Caesar there.

  182. And you'd take a little incense, and you would burn it in front of Caesar, and you would say,

  183. Caesar is Lord.

  184. And if you didn't do that, you couldn't enter into the marketplace.

  185. If you didn't do that, you couldn't do work.

  186. If you couldn't do that, you couldn't buy your goods.

  187. And so everybody did this.

  188. And Paul says in his passage, you can tell what kind of spirit controls us by what we say about Jesus.

  189. He says that in the Gospels, that when people came to Christ, and even when the demons came to Christ,

  190. often the demons would say things like, well, Jesus, he is the Son of God.

  191. And sometimes the demons would come before the Lord, and they would talk about him to other people,

  192. and they would say, Jesus, he is the Holy One of God.

  193. But what you never see in the Gospels is a demon saying, Jesus is Lord.

  194. It never happens.

  195. Because they had another Lord.

  196. They received their power from someplace else.

  197. And so Paul says to the church of Corinth, and he says to us,

  198. that if you're struggling with this idea of how you're living your life,

  199. if you're struggling with this idea of are you really spiritual,

  200. if you're struggling with where your spirituality comes from,

  201. he just says, look at your life.

  202. And look at the oath that you take.

  203. Can you say that Jesus is Lord of your life?

  204. Can you say that Jesus is your master?

  205. Can you say that Jesus is your patron that we talked about last week?

  206. Can you say that Jesus owns you?

  207. Can you say that Christ owns all of you?

  208. That Jesus owns all of your stuff?

  209. That he has the right to direct and control your life.

  210. Now, these aren't just words that Paul's talking about here.

  211. But what he's actually talking about is not just our words,

  212. but it's our actions and our thoughts and our life

  213. and the things we do when no one else is looking.

  214. And he's saying all of these things point to the power in our life.

  215. It talks about the thing that controls us.

  216. And the question is, where is this power coming from?

  217. And can you and I say that Christ is our Lord?

  218. That he controls everything about us?

  219. When you read the passage, you realize that the church in Corinth,

  220. they struggled with this.

  221. Because the church in Corinth, they wanted to play both ends.

  222. They wanted to live double lives.

  223. They wanted to live with one life in the marketplace

  224. and have their work or their law firm or their school

  225. or something like that be their Lord

  226. and control their life and be all of what they're about to be.

  227. But then when they went to church on Sunday,

  228. they wanted to be about Christ and Jesus and what he did

  229. and how he controlled all their life.

  230. And he was all about that.

  231. And so Paul just asked a simple question to the church

  232. so that we can just kind of lay this line down

  233. and say, where are we in this whole process?

  234. And the process he asked us is,

  235. is Christ Lord of your life?

  236. Now, when I say that,

  237. I know that sometimes we get kind of tense, right?

  238. Because we read these passages and we go,

  239. okay, this is where I'm supposed to be.

  240. I'm not there.

  241. I'm not.

  242. And you realize as we talk about these things,

  243. it's a journey we're on.

  244. At the end of the sermon, we're not saying,

  245. okay, we all should be like that

  246. because if we were all like that,

  247. none of us would be like that

  248. and the pastor wouldn't be like that

  249. and the staff wouldn't be like that

  250. and we'd all be lost.

  251. But the question we have to ask ourselves is,

  252. if Jesus is Lord and I'm not living like it,

  253. what's the next step I need to move in that direction

  254. to start living like that?

  255. How do I start to live like Christ is my king?

  256. How do I start to live like he is in control

  257. of all of my life?

  258. What is that next step?

  259. So we're not asking you to get there today

  260. or next week because you're never going to get there

  261. because we're broken, we're fallen, we struggle.

  262. But what we're talking about as a church

  263. is we're going on a journey,

  264. we're being filled with God's spirit

  265. or some kind of spirit

  266. and the question is,

  267. can we discern the truth in our life?

  268. And that truth is going to be determined

  269. by what kind of spirit leads us.

  270. And Paul gives us an easy example

  271. and he says, the way you figure this out is,

  272. can you look at your life,

  273. can you look at how you live,

  274. can you look at how you use your money,

  275. can you look at how you treat your people,

  276. can you look at how you do all these gifts

  277. that God's given you,

  278. and can you say in the midst of all that

  279. that Christ is Lord of your life

  280. and you're trusting him

  281. to take control over you?

  282. Everybody's really serious.

  283. But the question is, can we do that?

  284. Can we say that Christ is Lord of our life?

  285. You know, I struggle with that.

  286. I mean, there's times we preach

  287. and we teach and we talk through things

  288. and then all of a sudden I get out into the world

  289. and I get busy and I start doing things

  290. and all of a sudden I'm just focusing

  291. and I'm going down this path

  292. and all of a sudden I kind of stop

  293. and I go, wait a second.

  294. Who's trying to control my life?

  295. Is it me?

  296. Is it the circumstances around me?

  297. Or is it God?

  298. Is Christ's control of my life?

  299. So how do you answer that question?

  300. What do you say to that?

  301. Because he says the church at Corinth and us,

  302. we need to really figure about this answer out

  303. before we move forward.

  304. He gives an example.

  305. You know, for me, I guess the biggest example

  306. I ever saw of this in my life

  307. was my time in China.

  308. In the late 80s and early 90s,

  309. I was teaching in China.

  310. And we would see just amazing things happen.

  311. I just found out that one of the guys

  312. who was in our study became a pastor

  313. and he's serving and that's neat.

  314. I think it's neat that they just keep walking

  315. with the Lord.

  316. One night we were able to baptize 16 people

  317. in our bathtub.

  318. Our bathtub was literally this big.

  319. Now, we didn't get all 16 in at one time,

  320. but we did it, you know,

  321. one after another after another.

  322. And I'll never forget,

  323. as we shared the gospel with these students,

  324. it usually happened their junior or senior year.

  325. And in their junior or senior year,

  326. because of the universities that we were teaching at,

  327. they all had to make a decision.

  328. And the decision was this.

  329. Are they going to join a communist party or not?

  330. Because their senior year,

  331. they had to make this decision

  332. and they had to take this oath.

  333. And in this oath,

  334. they had to choose between God and the party.

  335. And for them, it was really clear

  336. that they couldn't do both sides

  337. because once they made a decision,

  338. they were just full in.

  339. They just had to do all of that.

  340. And so as we talked about these,

  341. and sometimes as Westerners,

  342. we struggle with that.

  343. Well, why can't you just do both?

  344. And they go, no, you can't do that.

  345. You have to either be all in or all out.

  346. And I realized as I watched them

  347. that we all struggle with that.

  348. Are we all in?

  349. Are we all out?

  350. Because he says there's not an in-between.

  351. There's not an in-between.

  352. Either we follow him and he's our Lord

  353. or we don't follow him

  354. and something else is our Lord.

  355. So the question is,

  356. where is he in your life?

  357. And what he's saying here,

  358. and Paul is saying to the church,

  359. is that Jesus is Lord of everything

  360. and if he's Lord of everything,

  361. it changes everything

  362. and either we accept his control

  363. and we follow him or we don't.

  364. And so he lays down his dividing line.

  365. Does that make sense?

  366. Is that clear?

  367. I struggle with that

  368. because I'm gonna leave here

  369. and there's gonna be a lot of things

  370. that are gonna happen in my life

  371. and I'm gonna wanna control,

  372. grab control of those things.

  373. And I'm gonna struggle with,

  374. am I trusting God or not trusting God?

  375. And Paul is saying to the church,

  376. you know God is good

  377. and you can trust him.

  378. He goes on in verses four through 11

  379. and he says some things about

  380. why and how God is good to us as his people.

  381. And he talks about this idea of spiritual gifts.

  382. And he says that Jesus,

  383. the Holy Spirit,

  384. God the Father,

  385. they give us these spiritual gifts.

  386. And these spiritual gifts

  387. are things that we use on our journey.

  388. He actually says in verses four, five, and six,

  389. there's a variety of gifts,

  390. there's a variety of ministries,

  391. and there's a variety of effects,

  392. a power that goes through these gifts.

  393. Now there's a lot of debate out there

  394. when we read these passages

  395. and people have been writing

  396. and talking about these things

  397. for thousands of years.

  398. And so I'm just gonna say

  399. this is what I think.

  400. I'm gonna define a spiritual gift

  401. as any supernatural ability

  402. that God has given every Christian

  403. by the Holy Spirit.

  404. This spiritual gift allows us to serve

  405. within the body of Christ.

  406. This spiritual gift is often manifested outwardly

  407. as we come into people's lives

  408. and we help people,

  409. we give them things,

  410. we meet visible needs

  411. that are in people's lives.

  412. The Greek words actually say

  413. that these gifts are tools

  414. that we build a house with.

  415. That these gifts are tools

  416. that we build a community of God with.

  417. Now maybe some of us

  418. are gonna get disappointed today again

  419. because we're not gonna talk about

  420. every gift and how it fits into our lives,

  421. but what we're gonna do

  422. is we're gonna lay down this foundation

  423. of what the gifts are.

  424. My prayer is that you're in a community group

  425. because we're gonna talk a lot about these

  426. in community groups

  427. and how we can live these out

  428. in our daily life.

  429. So the first thing that Paul says

  430. in verses four

  431. is that these gifts are gifts.

  432. They're favors.

  433. They're acts of God's grace in our life.

  434. He's saying that every Christian,

  435. when you come into the family of God,

  436. that the Holy Spirit enters in your life

  437. and there's a couple things that happen.

  438. Before you are walking with the Lord,

  439. before you know the Lord,

  440. the Bible says that you and I

  441. walked in darkness.

  442. That our eyes and our hearts

  443. and our ears were shut to God.

  444. We didn't wanna be friends with God.

  445. We were actually enemies of God.

  446. And for some reason,

  447. I do not understand why

  448. God sends his spirit into our life.

  449. And his spirit came into your life

  450. and if you're a child of God in here,

  451. he started to open your eyes,

  452. in your ears,

  453. in your heart,

  454. to the thoughts and the ideas of God.

  455. And sometime in that journey,

  456. as the spirit was working in your life,

  457. you had your eyes open,

  458. you saw Christ,

  459. you saw your sin,

  460. you saw your need for the gospel,

  461. and you said,

  462. I need that.

  463. That's what I need.

  464. That's the gospel.

  465. That's the message we're talking about.

  466. And at that moment,

  467. we're told that God's Holy Spirit

  468. comes into your life.

  469. He indwells you.

  470. It's the assurance of the people.

  471. It's the assurance of God's people.

  472. What the Bible would say

  473. is that spirit never leaves you.

  474. That you never have to worry about

  475. not being a child of God

  476. if you've entered into God's family.

  477. But the next thing we're told in this passage

  478. is that when that spirit comes into you,

  479. that he gives you gifts.

  480. He gives you manifestations of God's power

  481. in working in your life.

  482. Now, this is a new concept for many people.

  483. For some people,

  484. you're struggling with this

  485. and you're trying to figure out,

  486. okay, what does this look like?

  487. What's my gift?

  488. How do I know?

  489. Am I doing it well?

  490. I want that gift.

  491. I don't want this gift.

  492. Why does somebody give me that gift?

  493. And so we're always thinking through these things.

  494. So this is a huge topic

  495. that we're trying to just kind of jump into

  496. and try to build this foundation on.

  497. But what needless to say,

  498. everyone is given a gift.

  499. And I personally think

  500. that we're all given many different gifts.

  501. So when you come into God's family,

  502. God empowers you through his Holy Spirit

  503. and he gives you these gifts.

  504. There are glimpses of what God looks like in his world.

  505. We're told in verse 11

  506. that these gifts never indicate how mature you are.

  507. So if you're sitting here today

  508. and you have awesome gifts,

  509. it has nothing to do with you.

  510. And if you hear me right here,

  511. I think all the gifts are awesome gifts.

  512. But if you're out here

  513. and you have these spectacular gifts,

  514. what the Bible says is that none of these gifts

  515. have anything to do with you.

  516. They weren't given to you because you were great.

  517. They weren't given to you

  518. because you were ultra super obedient.

  519. They weren't given to you

  520. because you asked for them.

  521. The gifts were given to you

  522. because God loves you.

  523. He wants to pour out his grace on you.

  524. He has a purpose for you in his life.

  525. He has a purpose for you in his church.

  526. And he wants you to serve other people.

  527. That's why the gifts are given to you.

  528. So there's no gifts that are better than other gifts.

  529. They're all there.

  530. And the interesting thing is

  531. sometimes when we struggle with this

  532. and we say, oh, I have this gift.

  533. And it's a really special gift.

  534. And I can do these things.

  535. And when I do these things,

  536. people come to me

  537. and they're attracted to everything I do

  538. or I say or I heal.

  539. And what happens is

  540. it takes the focus off of God

  541. and his spirit

  542. and what God is doing in our life.

  543. And you look at the Church of Corinth

  544. and what we see in the Church of Corinth

  545. is that the Church of Corinth

  546. had all of these gifts.

  547. They had all the gifts.

  548. But they were a mess.

  549. They weren't any more spiritual.

  550. They weren't any more better.

  551. They had all these gifts

  552. but it wasn't any good.

  553. Paul says in verse 7

  554. that all these gifts come into us

  555. because of God's grace.

  556. And these gifts that God gives you

  557. is for the common good of all the people.

  558. So if you're here today

  559. and you've come into the family of God

  560. and God has given you these gifts

  561. and you've seen these things

  562. worked out in your life,

  563. these gifts were not given to you

  564. for your own good.

  565. The passage says

  566. that these gifts were given to you

  567. for the good of all God's people.

  568. Now listen to my heart here

  569. because it's going to...

  570. So if you have a special ability

  571. that God has given you

  572. and this ability has made you really famous

  573. or this ability has given you

  574. a lot of money,

  575. the gift was never given to you

  576. for that purpose.

  577. The gift was given to you

  578. so that you can make God's name great

  579. and bless God's people.

  580. So just like he says

  581. you can test what kind of spirit

  582. is leading your life

  583. in verses 1 through 3,

  584. if you have gifts in your life right now,

  585. you can test whether those gifts

  586. are from the Lord or not.

  587. Or if you're using them

  588. the way that God wants you to

  589. and the test is

  590. are you using these gifts

  591. for God's glory?

  592. Are you using these gifts

  593. to build up God's people?

  594. Paul goes on and he says

  595. every one of us was given these gifts

  596. and you have to realize

  597. that when you're given these gifts

  598. that not every one of us

  599. were given the same gifts.

  600. Not every one of us

  601. were given the same passions.

  602. Not every one of us

  603. were given the same ministries.

  604. That was the problem

  605. in the church of Corinth

  606. and that's the problem

  607. in the church in America

  608. and around the world.

  609. That we see people

  610. with different gifts

  611. and we want those gifts

  612. or we want everybody

  613. to have the same gifts

  614. that we have

  615. or sometimes we want people

  616. to have the same passions

  617. that we have.

  618. And so we walk into a church

  619. and we say

  620. well I really have a passion

  621. for this

  622. and this is what my ministry is

  623. and you start sharing with people

  624. and people kind of go

  625. yeah, that's a need

  626. but that's not really my passion.

  627. My passion is this.

  628. And they start sharing

  629. what they're doing

  630. and why God's called them

  631. to do things

  632. and what Paul is saying here

  633. is that God has given

  634. every one of us

  635. different passions

  636. and God has given

  637. every one of us

  638. different ministries

  639. and God has given

  640. every one of us

  641. different hearts

  642. and the question is

  643. are we going to embrace

  644. that difference?

  645. Are we going to rejoice

  646. in the difference?

  647. Now the church of Corinth

  648. they couldn't do that.

  649. So just like their sexuality

  650. just like their worshipping of idols

  651. just like their eating of meat

  652. just like their communion

  653. that we talked about

  654. two weeks ago

  655. just like their gifts.

  656. They allow these gifts

  657. to come into their life

  658. and to separate themselves.

  659. And so the problem was

  660. in the church of Corinth

  661. instead of having

  662. all these gifts

  663. that brought the church together

  664. and caused unity

  665. through diversity

  666. what was happening is

  667. everybody was angry

  668. with each other.

  669. Everybody didn't like each other

  670. because they didn't have

  671. the same gifts that they had

  672. and basically what people

  673. were saying is

  674. you don't

  675. I don't need you

  676. you don't need me

  677. my gift is the most important.

  678. Does that make sense?

  679. So there's this big struggle

  680. going on in the church

  681. and Paul is talking to them

  682. and he's giving us

  683. this warning

  684. he's saying hey

  685. don't go down that route

  686. because if you go down

  687. that route

  688. you're doing exactly

  689. what the gifts

  690. were not meant to be.

  691. You're dividing the church.

  692. And so Paul says

  693. that there are many gifts

  694. and there's many ministries

  695. in verses 4, 5, and 6.

  696. He says

  697. there are many ministries

  698. there's many gifts

  699. there's many effects

  700. they're all from the same God

  701. and in your church

  702. you're going to have

  703. dramatic gifts

  704. you're going to have

  705. non-dramatic gifts

  706. you're going to have

  707. teaching gifts

  708. you're going to have

  709. speaking gifts

  710. you're going to have

  711. sign gifts

  712. you're going to have

  713. many variety of gifts

  714. and all these gifts

  715. are needed

  716. and all these gifts

  717. are valued.

  718. If you got a bulletin today

  719. I put a list in there

  720. and so we want you

  721. to start building on this.

  722. So on this page right here

  723. is the four main passages

  724. that talk about

  725. spiritual gifts

  726. and you can divide them

  727. in any way you want

  728. to divide them.

  729. We put them into

  730. three different categories

  731. we put them into

  732. speaking gifts

  733. service gifts

  734. and sign gifts

  735. and we gave the four passages

  736. that talk mostly

  737. about these gifts.

  738. Now there are only 19 gifts

  739. on this list

  740. but there are over 30

  741. or 40

  742. or I don't know

  743. there's millions

  744. of different ministries

  745. and there's probably

  746. hundreds of different gifts

  747. but what Paul says

  748. is in this passage

  749. is no matter what

  750. the gift that you're given

  751. the purpose of this gift

  752. is to bring unity

  753. in closeness

  754. to God's people.

  755. Does that make sense?

  756. So the question

  757. we have to ask ourselves

  758. is as we walk

  759. through this journey

  760. with God

  761. as we walk through

  762. this journey

  763. with God's people

  764. are we taking the gifts

  765. that God's given us

  766. the resources

  767. the people

  768. the supernatural powers

  769. are we taking these things

  770. and are we building up

  771. God's people

  772. and are we building up

  773. God's kingdom

  774. or are we building up Tobin

  775. or are we building up

  776. somebody else?

  777. Because he says

  778. in the end

  779. the only way to know

  780. if you're using the gifts

  781. properly

  782. is where the focus is

  783. is the focus on yourself

  784. or is the focus

  785. on other people?

  786. Is this too heavy?

  787. We need to go here.

  788. In verses 8 through 11

  789. Paul lists out nine gifts

  790. and you can read them.

  791. He says

  792. there's a gift of wisdom

  793. word of wisdom

  794. there's a word of knowledge

  795. there's a gift of faith

  796. there's a gift of healing

  797. there's a gift of miracles

  798. there's a gift of prophecy

  799. there's a gift

  800. of distinguishing spirits

  801. there's a gift

  802. of various tongues

  803. and there's a gift

  804. of interpreting tongues

  805. and he says

  806. all these gifts are valid

  807. all these things are needed

  808. all these things

  809. express God's character

  810. all these things

  811. bring unity

  812. to the body of Christ

  813. if you take any

  814. of these things away

  815. it's not good

  816. and all these things

  817. are played out every day.

  818. So let me give you

  819. an example.

  820. I added in that list

  821. the gift of hospitality.

  822. Now the gift of hospitality

  823. is kind of alluded to

  824. in the Ephesians passage

  825. but it's really talked about

  826. in Romans and Hebrews

  827. and one of the things

  828. that's been amazing to me

  829. at Watermark

  830. is just to see this gift

  831. of hospitality lived out

  832. and the gift of hospitality

  833. is basically

  834. in Greek

  835. the word means

  836. a love for strangers

  837. and so God gives this gift

  838. of people

  839. on people

  840. who come into the family

  841. and he gives them

  842. this love for strangers

  843. he gives them this ability

  844. to make people feel at home

  845. he gives us

  846. this gift

  847. to make people feel

  848. at peace

  849. he gives this gift

  850. to people

  851. with the gift

  852. of hospitality

  853. and encouragement

  854. and he basically says

  855. I want you

  856. to treat people

  857. like they're your own family

  858. and create an environment

  859. where they can come in

  860. and the amazing thing

  861. to me about this

  862. is I've seen this lived out

  863. in our church

  864. over and over and over

  865. so when we talk

  866. to people who come

  867. into Watermark

  868. one of the first things

  869. they say is

  870. you guys are just a family

  871. and it feels like

  872. you care for each other

  873. and it feels like

  874. you want the best

  875. for each other

  876. and it feels like

  877. you're authentic

  878. and real for each other

  879. and it's just awesome

  880. and Paul would say

  881. that's the gift

  882. of hospitality

  883. being lived out

  884. I mean in my home

  885. and I have to say this

  886. because

  887. and I'm not in trouble

  888. with my wife

  889. so I'm not trying

  890. to build up equity

  891. or anything like that

  892. but my wife

  893. has the gift

  894. of hospitality

  895. and if you've been

  896. in her home

  897. you can see that

  898. played out

  899. and I think

  900. that she's probably

  901. fed everybody

  902. at Watermark

  903. at least two or three times

  904. and if you haven't

  905. been fed yet

  906. raise your hand

  907. we'll invite you over

  908. okay

  909. but that's that gift

  910. of hospitality

  911. being lived out

  912. is what happens

  913. in our life

  914. and it brings people

  915. into our community

  916. and into our home

  917. and they see our life

  918. being lived out

  919. in authenticity

  920. and that's one of the things

  921. we prayed for

  922. is a church at Watermark

  923. now there's a lot

  924. of other gifts

  925. we can talk about

  926. and I'm not going to go

  927. into all of these today

  928. we're going to come back

  929. and talk about them later

  930. but I want to answer

  931. some questions

  932. that people keep asking

  933. the staff

  934. okay

  935. the first question is

  936. do we believe

  937. that the gifts

  938. even the dramatic ones

  939. are real

  940. and we would say yes

  941. God's word is real

  942. all these gifts are real

  943. and the next question

  944. they'll ask us is

  945. do we think they still

  946. exist today

  947. and we would say yes

  948. we think they still

  949. exist today

  950. now there are some gifts

  951. I don't know about

  952. being a gift of an apostle

  953. because the idea was

  954. you had to see Jesus

  955. and to get instructions

  956. from him

  957. but I do know

  958. that one day

  959. these gifts

  960. are going to cease

  961. you think about it

  962. the only reason

  963. we have spiritual gifts

  964. today

  965. is because of the

  966. brokenness

  967. and the sin

  968. in our world

  969. and so God

  970. has imparted upon us

  971. his character

  972. in each one of us

  973. and so that

  974. when we do ministry

  975. and we love people

  976. and we encourage people

  977. and we pray for people

  978. and we heal people

  979. and we speak in tongues

  980. or whatever that looks like

  981. in your world

  982. that's part of a

  983. manifestation of God's

  984. kingdom

  985. but one day when you die

  986. or when Jesus comes back

  987. and you see him face to face

  988. you're not going to need

  989. the gift of exhortation

  990. and you're not going to need

  991. the gift of prophecy

  992. and you're not going to need

  993. the gift of tongues

  994. and you're not going to need

  995. the gift of healing

  996. because you're going to be

  997. in the presence of the healer

  998. and the speaker

  999. and the prophet

  1000. and the king

1001. so we believe that all

  1002. these gifts exist

  1003. but yes

1004. one day they will cease to exist

  1005. does the church need

  1006. all these gifts

1007. we're going to say yes

1008. we're going to talk about that

  1009. in two weeks

  1010. because if the church

1011. doesn't have all these gifts

  1012. then we're like a body

  1013. without a head

  1014. or we're like a body

  1015. without legs

  1016. or we're like legs

  1017. without feet

  1018. and so yes

1019. we need all of these gifts

  1020. in our church

1021. because we want to be

  1022. a complete body

1023. the next question people ask me

1024. all the time is this

1025. how come we don't ever see you

  1026. or the other pastors

  1027. practicing these gifts

1028. in front of the church

1029. and I can only understand

  1030. or think it means

  1031. like speaking in tongues

  1032. or healing

  1033. or prophecy

  1034. or something like that

1035. and I would say that

1036. I think that you do see us

1037. practicing some of these things

  1038. in gift

  1039. in front of church

1040. but that we would also say this

1041. as we look at God's word

1042. and as we look at Paul's world

  1043. we realize that

1044. if Paul were in a house church

  1045. of 20 or 30 people

  1046. who all are Christians

1047. that the expression of those gifts

  1048. would look very different

1049. than if you're in a church family

  1050. of 300 or 400 people

  1051. and there are Christians

  1052. and non-Christians

  1053. and de-church people

1054. and so we would say

1055. that God has asked us

1056. to live out these gifts

  1057. in an orderly

  1058. in biblical fashion

1059. in front of God's people

1060. when I hear this all the time

  1061. I've heard this

  1062. in every church

  1063. I've ever been a member of

  1064. in every church

  1065. I've ever been a pastor of

1066. we have people come to me

  1067. and they say this

  1068. they say

1069. you know I have this gift here

1070. but I don't ever really see it

1071. lived out in this church

1072. and so I think maybe

1073. it's best for me to go

  1074. to another church

  1075. where that's lived out

1076. because then I'll feel free

  1077. to express those things

1078. and I can do it

  1079. when everybody else

1080. is doing the same thing

1081. and I've had it happen

  1082. in every church

1083. that I've ever been a member of

  1084. in every church

1085. that I've ever been a pastor of

1086. and what I would say to you

  1087. is this

1088. if you're in that position

1089. and you're thinking about that

  1090. if you do that

  1091. you're going exactly against

1092. what Paul says in his passage

  1093. he says the gifts

  1094. were given in diversity

1095. he says if you leave

  1096. a church family

1097. because you don't feel like

1098. you can express those things

  1099. or no one else

  1100. is expressing those things

  1101. in this big setting

  1102. what you're doing

  1103. is you're actually hurting

  1104. the body of Christ

1105. and if you go to another church

  1106. where everybody is doing

  1107. whatever that gift is

1108. that you don't feel comfortable

  1109. doing here

1110. he says what you're doing

1111. is you're hurting that body also

  1112. because in that body

1113. they already have enough people

  1114. doing those gifts

1115. that you don't feel comfortable

  1116. practicing here

1117. and so if you have a gift

  1118. or you feel like

  1119. God has empowered me

  1120. to do things

  1121. or to serve things

1122. we want you to practice

  1123. those things

  1124. in the setting

  1125. that brings honor

  1126. and glory

  1127. and order

  1128. to God

  1129. and his people

  1130. does that make sense

  1131. I hope I was really clear

  1132. because we get asked

1133. those questions all the time

1134. so let me flesh out

  1135. verses 4, 5, and 6

1136. and then we're going to end

  1137. with some questions

  1138. 4, 5, and 6

  1139. so let's say

  1140. you have the gift

  1141. of encouragement

  1142. exhortation

  1143. and so

  1144. what Paul says

  1145. in his passage

1146. is that there are many gifts

  1147. there's many ministries

  1148. so ministry is how

1149. you would live that out

  1150. and there's many effects

  1151. which means

  1152. the word actually means

  1153. power or strength

  1154. or intensity

1155. so you have many gifts

  1156. you have many places

1157. where you live that out

1158. and you have different powers

  1159. or intensity

1160. in which you would do it

  1161. and so let's say

  1162. you have the gift

  1163. of exhortation

  1164. or encouragement

  1165. now the exhortation

  1166. or encouragement

  1167. is just basically

  1168. the ability

  1169. to speak peace

  1170. into people's lives

  1171. I love people

  1172. who have the gift

  1173. of exhortation

  1174. or encouragement

  1175. it's the ability

  1176. to reassure people

  1177. the ability

  1178. to comfort people

  1179. the ability

  1180. to bring deep

  1181. spiritual healing

  1182. into other people's lives

  1183. it's the ability

  1184. just to affirm people

  1185. for who they are

  1186. in their journey

  1187. with God

  1188. now I didn't grow up

  1189. in that

  1190. my parents were German

  1191. 100% German

  1192. right

1193. so if I came to my dad

  1194. and I said

  1195. oh man my arm

  1196. really hurts

  1197. when I do this

  1198. my dad would say

  1199. don't do that

  1200. now that is not

  1201. the gift of encouragement

  1202. okay

  1203. and that's not

  1204. the gift of exhortation

  1205. right

  1206. that's not what

  1207. he's talking about here

  1208. he's talking about

  1209. something really different

1210. and so let's just say

  1211. you have this gift

  1212. of exhortation

  1213. and you're a teacher

  1214. well your ministry

  1215. is a teacher

  1216. you're playing out

  1217. this gift

  1218. so maybe you're

  1219. ministering to your students

  1220. and you're exhorting them

  1221. and you're encouraging them

  1222. or maybe you're exhorting

  1223. and encouraging other teachers

  1224. or maybe you're exhorting

  1225. and encouraging

1226. the parents of your students

  1227. and Paul says

1228. in any of these ministries

1229. in any of these settings

1230. your gift is going to look different

  1231. you're going to have

  1232. a different passion

  1233. you're going to have

  1234. a different intensity

1235. you're going to live out

  1236. these things differently

  1237. now maybe you have

  1238. the gift of encouragement

  1239. and exhortation

1240. but God has called you

1241. just to minister in your home

  1242. and so you're using

  1243. your gift

  1244. as a husband

  1245. or a wife

  1246. in your home

  1247. and you're encouraging

  1248. and you're exhorting

  1249. your people

  1250. and you're just bringing

  1251. God's truth

  1252. and love

  1253. into their life

  1254. or maybe God

  1255. has called you

  1256. with this gift

  1257. to live it out

  1258. in your dorms

  1259. or maybe you're

  1260. a student here

  1261. and you're trying

  1262. to figure out

1263. okay where do I live out

  1264. my gifts

1265. and how do I serve the Lord

  1266. and God says

  1267. hey you serve him

  1268. where I placed you

  1269. and I placed you

  1270. in these dorms

1271. and so I want you

1272. to use this gift out

  1273. to encourage

  1274. and exhort people

  1275. and to bring them

  1276. into the fellowship

  1277. of God

  1278. maybe you're a doctor

  1279. and you live out

  1280. this exhortation

  1281. in the hospital

1282. or you live it out

  1283. in the restaurant today

  1284. as you're nice

  1285. to the waiters

1286. or maybe you live it out

  1287. in the bank

1288. the banks need a lot

  1289. of encouragement

  1290. nowadays right

  1291. so if you're

  1292. an exhortation

  1293. or you're an encourager

  1294. there you can have

  1295. an amazing ministry

  1296. in the bank

  1297. so last week

  1298. I wrote a check

  1299. to HSBC

  1300. and it came back

1301. to me in the mail

  1302. and it said

  1303. insufficient funds

  1304. so I wrote

  1305. another check

  1306. and I said

  1307. your insufficient funds

  1308. or my insufficient funds

  1309. it's a joke

  1310. but what I'm trying

  1311. to say is

  1312. there's a lot

  1313. of places

  1314. that need

  1315. encouragement

  1316. and exhortation

  1317. for me

  1318. one of the best

  1319. places I've seen

  1320. and being able

  1321. to use my gifts

  1322. is the barber chair

  1323. there's just something

  1324. about getting your haircut

  1325. and you're sitting there

  1326. next to people

1327. who are getting their haircut

  1328. and they cannot move

  1329. they're just stuck there

  1330. right

1331. so you have 30 minutes

  1332. to an hour

  1333. just to encourage them

  1334. and exhort them

  1335. and talk to them

  1336. about the things

  1337. God is doing

  1338. in your life

  1339. and you're able

1340. to do all these things

  1341. and so what Paul

  1342. is saying

  1343. is that no matter

  1344. where you are

1345. we have all these gifts

  1346. I've given you

  1347. all these different assignments

  1348. and what God

  1349. is saying

1350. is I just want you

  1351. to serve people

  1352. I want you

  1353. to love people

  1354. I want you

  1355. to give yourself

  1356. to others

  1357. I want you

  1358. to help others

  1359. and the problem

  1360. in the church

  1361. in Corinth

  1362. is that they forgot

  1363. the other part

  1364. and so when they

  1365. started thinking

  1366. about how God

  1367. has gifted them

  1368. and what they're

  1369. supposed to do

  1370. with their life

  1371. and how they're

  1372. supposed to live

  1373. all they started

  1374. thinking about

  1375. is themselves

  1376. and what they

  1377. needed

  1378. and Paul says

  1379. in his passage

  1380. that you and I

  1381. need each other

  1382. so wherever you are

  1383. on your journey

  1384. God has called you

  1385. to live out those

  1386. gifts

  1387. serving each other

  1388. does that make sense

  1389. so let me ask

  1390. us some questions

  1391. and we'll finish

  1392. first question

  1393. is this

  1394. if you're honest

  1395. right now

  1396. and you were

  1397. to examine

  1398. your life

  1399. this week

  1400. what spirit

  1401. would you say

  1402. controlled you

  1403. if you looked

  1404. at how you

  1405. lived your life

  1406. this week

  1407. what spirit

  1408. would you say

  1409. controlled you

  1410. maybe the question

  1411. would be

  1412. where is your

  1413. focus been

  1414. has your focus

  1415. been on yourself

  1416. or has your focus

  1417. been on others

  1418. God's family

  1419. second question

  1420. I've been asking

  1421. myself

  1422. as I look around

  1423. watermark

1424. and I look at my

  1425. brothers and sisters

  1426. next to me

  1427. do I see a need

1428. for them in my life

  1429. do you really need

  1430. the person

  1431. next to you

1432. now if it's your spouse

  1433. hopefully you're going

  1434. to say yes

  1435. I really do

  1436. I love you honey

  1437. but do you really

  1438. need the people

  1439. next to you

1440. I mean some of us

  1441. come in here

  1442. and we sit down

1443. we don't ever say hi

  1444. we don't ever talk

  1445. to people

  1446. and then we leave

  1447. right away

  1448. and this is exactly

  1449. the thing

  1450. that Paul

  1451. was warning

  1452. the Corinthians

  1453. about

  1454. because some of you

  1455. have gifts

  1456. and some of you

  1457. have talents

  1458. and some of you

  1459. have a ministry

  1460. sitting right next

  1461. to you

  1462. but you're so

  1463. focused on yourself

  1464. that you're missing

  1465. this amazing

  1466. opportunity

  1467. that God

  1468. wants to give you

  1469. to love

  1470. and encourage

  1471. the people

  1472. around you

  1473. so do you see

  1474. a need

  1475. for the brothers

  1476. and sisters

  1477. around you

  1478. in your life

  1479. maybe to ask

  1480. another way

  1481. would be this

  1482. how do

  1483. your brothers

  1484. and sisters

  1485. bless you

  1486. with the gifts

  1487. and talents

  1488. that they have

  1489. if I were

  1490. just to say

  1491. turn next

  1492. to the person

  1493. right next

  1494. to you

  1495. and say

  1496. man you know

  1497. I'm really

  1498. encouraged

  1499. by this

  1500. in your life

  1501. and I really

  1502. see God's

  1503. spirit

  1504. living out

  1505. in how you

  1506. do

  1507. this

  1508. what would you

  1509. tell them

  1510. see the church

  1511. of Corinth

  1512. couldn't tell

  1513. each other

  1514. anything

  1515. because they

  1516. were so

  1517. focused on

  1518. themselves

  1519. they were so

  1520. busy about

  1521. living out

  1522. their own

  1523. life

  1524. they were so

  1525. busy about

  1526. their own

  1527. world

  1528. they didn't

  1529. even think

  1530. about the

  1531. people next

  1532. to them

  1533. that they're

  1534. part of

  1535. the body

  1536. that they

  1537. need each

  1538. other

  1539. and Paul

  1540. is encouraging

  1541. them to say

  1542. be careful

  1543. of this

  1544. because if you

  1545. run down

  1546. this path

  1547. it's going

  1548. to be

  1549. destructive

  1550. to the life

  1551. of the church

  1552. one last

  1553. question

  1554. how are you

  1555. using

  1556. your gifts

  1557. right now

  1558. to build up

  1559. God's church

  1560. God

  1561. if you are

  1562. a Christian

  1563. in here

  1564. God has

  1565. given you

  1566. a gift

  1567. and my

  1568. question for

  1569. you

  1570. and the

  1571. question for

  1572. me

  1573. is

  1574. how are

  1575. you using

  1576. the gift

  1577. that God

  1578. has given

  1579. you right

  1580. now

  1581. to build

  1582. up

  1583. his church

  1584. what does

  1585. that look

  1586. like

  1587. in your

  1588. life

  1589. because the

  1590. passage says

  1591. that you

  1592. and I

  1593. have God's

  1594. fingerprint

  1595. on us

  1596. to each

  1597. one of you

  1598. as God's

  1599. child

  1600. has been

  1601. given a

  1602. gift

  1603. and each

  1604. one of

  1605. these gifts

  1606. is needed

  1607. in the

  1608. life

  1609. of this

  1610. church

  1611. and if

  1612. you're

  1613. sitting

  1614. in your

  1615. chair

  1616. and saying

  1617. my gift

  1618. means

  1619. nothing

  1620. I don't

  1621. have a

  1622. gift

  1623. that's

  1624. all

  1625. wrong

  1626. and many

  1627. of us

  1628. are going

  1629. to walk

  1630. through

  1631. our life

  1632. and we're

  1633. going to

  1634. waste

  1635. these amazing

  1636. gifts

  1637. and talents

  1638. that God

  1639. has given

  1640. us

  1641. for his

  1642. kingdom

  1643. and I

  1644. promise you

  1645. that the

  1646. greatest

  1647. joy

  1648. you're

  1649. ever

  1650. going to

  1651. experience

  1652. as God's

  1653. child

  1654. is living

  1655. out

  1656. his

  1657. gifts

  1658. in your

  1659. life

  1660. in the

  1661. service

  1662. of other

  1663. people

  1664. the church

  1665. of Corinth

  1666. could not

  1667. get that

  1668. because they

  1669. were so

  1670. focused

  1671. on

  1672. themselves

  1673. my prayer

  1674. for us

  1675. as a church

  1676. watermark

  1677. is that we

  1678. would get

  1679. it

  1680. that we

  1681. would realize

  1682. God has

  1683. a purpose

  1684. for you

  1685. God has

  1686. a gift

  1687. for you

  1688. God has

  1689. a ministry

  1690. for you

  1691. those

  1692. ministries

  1693. are spread

  1694. out throughout

  1695. your world

  1696. every day

  1697. and the

  1698. question is

  1699. are we

  1700. going to

  1701. trust him

  1702. are we

  1703. going to

  1704. allow him

  1705. to be

  1706. lord of

  1707. our life

  1708. or are we

  1709. going to

  1710. be our

  1711. own

  1712. lord

  1713. does that

  1714. make sense

  1715. father we

  1716. thank you

  1717. for this

  1718. day

  1719. we thank you

  1720. for these

  1721. words of the

  1722. church of

  1723. Corinth

  1724. lord I know

  1725. that there

  1726. are some

  1727. amazing gifts

  1728. in this

  1729. church

  1730. as I think

  1731. about the

  1732. people that

  1733. you've equipped

  1734. and brought

  1735. into this

  1736. church

  1737. and I think

  1738. of the

  1739. spiritual

  1740. gifts that

  1741. we see

  1742. that every

  1743. day

  1744. I realize

  1745. that we're

  1746. probably one

  1747. of the most

  1748. gifted churches

  1749. I've ever

  1750. seen in my

  1751. life

  1752. and yet

  1753. we

  1754. often

  1755. many of

  1756. us

  1757. sit back

  1758. and we do

  1759. nothing with

  1760. those gifts

  1761. we expect

  1762. other people

  1763. to give

  1764. those gifts

  1765. and put

  1766. their gifts

  1767. on us

  1768. and to

  1769. minister

  1770. to us

  1771. and we

  1772. are just

  1773. so busy

  1774. and so

  1775. self-focused

  1776. that we

  1777. miss the

  1778. blessings

  1779. that you

  1780. want for

  1781. your people

  1782. lord I

  1783. just confess

  1784. I beg

  1785. your forgiveness

  1786. in my own

  1787. selfishness

  1788. I beg your

  1789. forgiveness

  1790. just for my

  1791. own

  1792. pride

  1793. and arrogance

  1794. trying to

  1795. live life

  1796. often as a

  1797. lone wolf

  1798. Christian

  1799. and not

  1800. realizing that

  1801. you've put

  1802. this body

  1803. of Christ

  1804. around us

  1805. to serve

  1806. and to

  1807. minister

  1808. to us

  1809. lord I

  1810. pray for

  1811. all of

  1812. your children

  1813. here

  1814. that you

  1815. would open

  1816. their eyes

  1817. to your

  1818. grace

  1819. and your

  1820. mercy

  1821. and the

  1822. gift of

  1823. your spirit

  1824. that you've

  1825. given them

  1826. lord I

  1827. pray for

  1828. this church

  1829. that we

  1830. wouldn't be

  1831. a church

  1832. with a

  1833. hand chopped

  1834. off

  1835. or an

  1836. arm chopped

  1837. off

  1838. maybe even

  1839. our head

  1840. chopped

  1841. off

  1842. because we

  1843. refuse to

  1844. accept all

  1845. of your

  1846. blessings in

  1847. our life

  1848. lord I

  1849. pray for us

  1850. as individuals

  1851. as we live

  1852. out these

  1853. gifts and

  1854. these blessings

  1855. that we

  1856. would know

  1857. that the

  1858. focus is

  1859. on others

  1860. and on the

  1861. body

  1862. and that it's

  1863. not on us

  1864. lord most of

  1865. all I just

  1866. pray that we

  1867. would be

  1868. different

  1869. pray that we

  1870. would trust

  1871. you

  1872. that we

  1873. would walk

  1874. with you

  1875. that whenever

  1876. we have a

  1877. struggle we

  1878. would look to

  1879. your son and

  1880. realize that in

  1881. his life and in

  1882. his words and his

  1883. actions there is

  1884. truth in life and

  1885. there is the true

  1886. spirit help us to

  1887. call him lord

1888. help us to call him

  1889. savior show us

  1890. what that next step

  1891. is as we surrender

1892. our lives to you and

1893. ask you to change us

  1894. and to make us

  1895. different

  1896. lord we pray for

  1897. this church

  1898. watermark

  1899. we talk a lot

  1900. about missions

  1901. we talk a lot

  1902. about the gospel

  1903. we talk a lot

  1904. about out there

  1905. and serving

  1906. and often we

  1907. just don't do

  1908. it

  1909. father we need

  1910. you

  1911. we lift up all

  1912. these things to

  1913. you and we pray

  1914. these things to

  1915. your son Jesus

  1916. holy name

  1917. amen

  1918. you

  1919. you

  1920. you

  1921. you

  1922. you

  1923. you

  1925. you

  1926. you

  1927. you

  1928. you

  1929. you

  1930. you

  1931. you

  1932. you
