  1. How you guys doing?

  2. Wow, that was great.

  3. That was actually a very good, good.

  4. Hey, so we have a little test afterwards

  5. to see who can get all the languages

  6. that were spoken there.

  7. There's one there I probably think

  8. you might be hard off.

  9. Hey guys, so this is your first time at Watermark.

  10. My name is Tobin.

  11. I'm one of the pastors here.

  12. Yeah, last week I said that

  13. and someone looked at me and goes,

  14. well, why do you say that?

  15. Because as far as we know,

  16. you're like the only pastor here, right?

  17. So why do you keep saying that?

  18. And I said, yeah, you know,

  19. when we started Watermark a couple years ago,

  20. we'll be five years old in two weeks,

  21. a couple of us put together this document.

  22. It's on screen.

  23. You can't see it.

  24. I just want to come out here

  25. so you can see a little quicker, closer.

  26. And it's basically, it kind of tells who we are

  27. and what we do, and more importantly,

  28. what we don't do as a church.

  29. And our central ministry focus,

  30. as we prayed about it, you know,

  31. is Ephesians 4.

  32. We encouraged and equipped everyone

  33. to actively use abilities, skills,

  34. spiritual gifts, and good works for Christ

  35. in the advancement of the gospel.

  36. We talked about that last week.

  37. We said that it's not an accident that you're here,

  38. that you're here because this church

  39. needs you to be here.

  40. You have gifts.

  41. You have talents.

  42. You have skills that,

  43. if you weren't here,

  44. then you,

  45. we would miss out on those things.

  46. I mean, sometimes people go,

  47. why I want to go over here

  48. because I feel more comfortable

  49. because there's more people with my gifts there.

  50. So, but then you have a gift church

  51. that has all the same gifts

  52. and not the broad variety of gifts.

  53. And, you know, you might be a leg,

  54. and if the leg doesn't show up

  55. except for every three weeks,

  56. then the body's not very healthy, is it?

  57. And if you might be a hand or an arm,

  58. and if the hand goes,

  59. hey, I don't, I'm new to this.

  60. I got to go read a couple manuals

  61. before I'd be a hand.

  62. Well, the hand isn't very much

  63. helping the body, is it?

  64. So we believe that God has you here,

  65. and you have these gifts

  66. and these talents

  67. that we've been talking about

  68. in the church

  69. when the church needs you.

  70. The second part we talked about

  71. are up here is our mission.

  72. And we just say

  73. that the mission of Watermark

  74. Community Church

  75. is to be used of God

  76. in helping people take the next step

  77. in their spiritual journey in life

  78. to become fully functional followers of Christ.

  79. And that's what governs

  80. everything that we do,

  81. that it's here that you take the next step.

  82. We're not saying

  83. this is where we need to be at the end,

  84. but this is the next step.

  85. And for some of you,

  86. the next step might be

  87. just having some of the answers

  88. or questions answered

  89. that you have here about Christianity.

  90. I know some of you

  91. are dragged here by friends.

  92. You're like, oh my gosh, I have to...

  93. But you have a lot of questions.

  94. That might be the next step.

  95. For some of you here,

  96. it might be coming to faith

  97. and stop fighting against God

  98. and stop fighting against the Spirit

  99. and saying basically,

  100. okay, I'm trusting you

  101. and I'm going forward.

  102. And for some of you,

  103. it might be finding out

  104. what your spiritual gifts are.

  105. And for some of you,

  106. it might be using those spiritual gifts.

  107. And so the reason I say

  108. I'm one of the pastors

  109. is I really believe

  110. that in this congregation,

  111. there's people who are much more gifted than me

  112. in apologetics

  113. and there's people

  114. who are much more gifted than me in teaching.

  115. And there's people in here

  116. who have the gift of pastoring

  117. and there's people in here

  118. who have the gift of healing.

  119. There's people in here

  120. who have the gift of service.

  121. And if you don't do it,

  122. then the church is weak

  123. and the body is weak

  124. and people are hurt.

  125. And so if you're wondering

  126. what your gifts are,

  127. you're thinking about it,

  128. come and see the staff

  129. and we want to help you in this journey

  130. and to develop those gifts

  131. so that you can be

  132. a fully functional follower of Christ

  133. within the body of this church.

  134. And we're going to talk about that a little more.

  135. We put this spiritual gifts in this week,

  136. but next week we're going to have

  137. places we need you to serve

  138. and what does that look like

  139. for you to serve

  140. in Watermark

  141. and be a part of God's family.

  142. One of the things

  143. we also prayed about

  144. is the church

  145. is when we came together

  146. that Watermark,

  147. that we would identify

  148. all the idols in this world,

  149. that we'd identify the idols

  150. that we struggle with.

  151. The Bible says an idol

  152. is anything that captures your heart.

  153. It's anything that you love more than God.

  154. It's whatever's precious to you.

  155. Whatever, if it was taken away,

  156. you'd become angry

  157. or you'd get upset.

  158. Yet, we have a lot of idols in Hong Kong.

  159. Some of us struggle with the idols

  160. of just education

  161. and getting the best grades

  162. and taking more classes

  163. so we can seem competent to our peers.

  164. Some of us struggle with traditions

  165. and some of us struggle with families.

  166. Some of us cling to wealth

  167. and some of us cling to power

  168. and some of us cling to sex

  169. and our sexuality

  170. and some of us cling to control

  171. and some of us cling to pride

  172. and sports

  173. and hobbies

  174. and free time

  175. and time.

  176. Some of our idols

  177. are ourselves.

  178. Some of us struggle with love.

  179. It was 1997

  180. and

  181. Christina and I

  182. had been married one year.

  183. I don't want to know

  184. who wasn't born in 1997,

  185. please,

  186. but

  187. I realized after one year

  188. that I was in trouble.

  189. I was 35.

  190. I'd been married to Christina

  191. for one year

  192. and I realized

  193. something was wrong.

  194. I had this crisis of faith

  195. in my life.

  196. I realized

  197. that I didn't love her

  198. as much as she loves me.

  199. I realized,

  200. what I mean by that is

  201. I just didn't understand

  202. what love was

  203. the way she did.

  204. And I was just

  205. totally freaking out.

  206. I mean,

  207. I was just,

  208. I couldn't sleep.

  209. I was in seminary.

  210. I'm trying to take these classes.

  211. I had been a Christian for,

  212. since I was 10 years old,

  213. but I just didn't understand love

  214. and I didn't see

  215. and experience it

  216. the way that she did.

  217. And there goes my name.

  218. And,

  219. you know,

  220. I went to my mentor,

  221. Dr. Hannah,

  222. and I said to him,

  223. hey,

  224. I have these big problems.

  225. You see,

  226. I grew up in a family

  227. where love

  228. was just

  229. because people

  230. did things for you.

  231. You love people

  232. because they took care of you.

  233. You love people

  234. because they made you feel good.

  235. You love people

  236. because they served you.

  237. That's the kind of love

  238. I experienced.

  239. In my family,

  240. love was always

  241. conditional.

  242. And sometimes love

  243. would be withheld

  244. and sometimes love

  245. would be withholded

  246. and sometimes love

  247. would be removed.

  248. And that was the worst

  249. as a kid

  250. when you really messed up

  251. and your parents

  252. just removed

  253. your love

  254. from you.

  255. But here,

  256. my wife,

  257. I realize

  258. that she seemed

  259. to love me

  260. just because

  261. of me.

  262. I know it sounds

  263. really weird.

  264. I mean,

  265. it sounds stupid.

  266. I just couldn't comprehend it.

  267. And I'm not saying

  268. she's perfect.

  269. I mean,

  270. if you have two hours a day,

  271. we can sit together

  272. and I can just share

  273. with you all her imperfections.

  274. I love you,

  275. honey.

  276. But what I'm saying

  277. is that she understood love

  278. and she had the capacity

  279. to do it

  280. that was so much

  281. different than mine.

  282. And I didn't understand

  283. love

  284. and I realized that.

  285. And I shared

  286. with Dr. Hand,

  287. I said,

  288. hey,

  289. this is what's going on

  290. and he just looked at me

  291. and he listened to me

  292. and he said,

  293. you know,

  294. Tobin,

  295. the difference

  296. of what you are experiencing

  297. between you and Christina

  298. is just a speck

  299. in the totality

  300. of the gospel.

  301. What you're experiencing

  302. in that difference

  303. and in love

  304. is just a speck

  305. compared to God's love

  306. for you.

  307. But God's love

  308. for you

  309. is so much greater

  310. than Christina's love

  311. for you.

  312. And I thought about that

  313. and I have to be honest

  314. with you,

  315. I still struggle.

  316. I struggle with God's love.

  317. I struggle with

  318. the love of Christ.

  319. I struggle with

  320. gospel-centered love.

  321. What does it mean?

  322. You know what?

  323. The church at Corinth,

  324. they really struggled

  325. with this also.

  326. I mean,

  327. the church at Corinth

  328. was a mess.

  329. You know,

  330. we've been talking about

  331. for like 12 weeks now,

  332. God for some reason

  333. allowed Paul

  334. to plant this church

  335. in the middle

  336. of probably

  337. the most immoral,

  338. the most out-of-control

  339. city in the world.

  340. The city was all about

  341. money,

  342. sex,

  343. and power.

  344. And the people

  345. who came to Christ

  346. and the people

  347. who came to church,

  348. they still struggled

  349. with money,

  350. sex,

  351. and power.

  352. They struggled

  353. with the idols

  354. of their past

  355. just like you

  356. and I do.

  357. They struggled

  358. with the scars

  359. that were on their heart

  360. from bad choices

  361. that they made

  362. in life

  363. just like you

  364. and I do.

  365. They struggled

  366. with pride

  367. and selfishness

  368. and self-centeredness

  369. just like you

  370. and I do.

  371. And in the midst

  372. of this,

  373. because of God's love

  374. and His grace,

  375. He gives these gifts

  376. to this church,

  377. these gifts

  378. of the Spirit,

  379. they're gifts

  380. of grace

  381. and they're

  382. these empowerments,

  383. these supernatural

  384. empowerments

  385. that are allowing

  386. them to do things

  387. that people

  388. just were freaking

  389. out when they did

  390. them.

  391. And He gave them

  392. to them for two reasons.

  393. The reason was

  394. to build up the body

  395. of Christ,

  396. but the main reason

  397. was to bring Him glory

  398. and to bring Him honor.

  399. And we're told

  400. in the passage

  401. that all the people

  402. in the church

  403. had gifts.

  404. When you come to Christ,

  405. you have gifts

  406. and everyone in the church

  407. had these gifts.

  408. They had the gift

  409. of prophecy

  410. and preaching

  411. and serving

  412. and ministries

  413. and tongues

  414. and everything,

  415. but in their pride

  416. and in their selfishness

  417. and in their self-reliance,

  418. they pushed away

  419. all those gifts

  420. and they just elevated three.

  421. They said,

  422. these are the only three gifts

  423. that really matter

  424. and that everything else

  425. is rejected.

  426. And so they had this body,

  427. this Christian body,

  428. like we're supposed

  429. to be like a church

  430. and the body

  431. was totally dysfunctional

  432. and there was these splits

  433. happening in the church

  434. and there was these

  435. fragmentations

  436. and people were angry

  437. at each other

  438. and only some people

  439. could speak

  440. the heavenly language,

  441. Texan.

  442. And everybody else

  443. couldn't speak Texan

  444. and there was,

  445. that's a joke,

  446. okay,

  447. but I do think

  448. it is the heavenly language.

  449. But they could only speak that

  450. and so Paul,

  451. in chapter 13,

  452. he comes to them

  453. and he reads this passage

  454. and you guys,

  455. you don't understand it

  456. when Paul wrote these letters,

  457. this letter to the Corinthians,

  458. this passage,

  459. we read it

  460. and we go,

  461. oh, that's so cute.

  462. Marriage,

  463. love,

  464. true love.

  465. It's so beautiful.

  466. But that's not how

  467. Paul intended it.

  468. I mean,

  469. when Paul wrote this letter

  470. to the Corinthians,

  471. it was intense.

  472. And so this passage

  473. is so intense

  474. we've decided to divide it

  475. up into two sections

  476. so we're going to take

  477. a part of the section today

  478. and all I want to do

  479. is I want to look at love.

  480. I want to look at

  481. the importance of love

  482. in our life

  483. as we go on this journey

  484. with God

  485. and with each other

  486. and then I want to look at

  487. like how we get love,

  488. what does it mean

  489. to get love

  490. and then we'll cover

  491. the rest of it

  492. next week,

  493. okay,

  494. so next week.

  495. So this week is love,

  496. the importance of it

  497. in our journey

  498. and then how do we get it?

  499. How do we pursue it?

  500. How do we grab onto it?

  501. And I have a couple questions

  502. like we've been doing

  503. all this time

  504. because I learn through questions.

  505. I don't know how you learn

  506. but I learn through questions.

  507. So in verses one through three,

  508. Paul's looking at this church

  509. and it's crazy.

  510. Remember at the end

  511. of chapter 12

  512. we talked about last week,

  513. he said they're looking

  514. at their gifts

  515. and they're misusing

  516. their gifts

  517. and Paul says,

  518. hey, let me teach you

  519. something better.

  520. I'm going to teach you

  521. something even greater

  522. than your gifts.

  523. I'm going to teach you

  524. something that's even

  525. more fantastic.

  526. I'm going to teach you

  527. something that's going

  528. to sustain you

  529. even when your gifts disappear.

  530. I'm going to teach you

  531. love.

  532. So in verse one,

  533. he says,

  534. if I speak with the tongues

  535. of men's of angels

  536. but do not have love,

  537. I become a noisy gong

  538. or a clanging cymbal.

  539. You see,

  540. in these first three verses,

  541. the church has learned

  542. five ways they're trying

  543. to live.

  544. There's five different

  545. lifestyles in this church

  546. that the church

  547. has been trying to live

  548. and they're all

  549. in these first three verses.

  550. So when he says this,

  551. he says,

  552. if I speak with the gift

  553. of angels and tongues

  554. of men and angels

  555. but I don't have love,

  556. he's talking about

  557. these people who've

  558. come together in a church

  559. and they said,

  560. hey, we're going to be

  561. about these supernatural gifts.

  562. We're going to be

  563. about speaking tongues,

  564. we're going to be

  565. about healing,

  566. we're going to be

  567. about doing miracles.

  568. These are the things

  569. that are going to center

  570. around our whole life.

  571. We're going to focus

  572. on these things

  573. and we're going to allow

  574. them to impact us

  575. and they're going to change us

  576. and we're going to be

  577. so awesome.

  578. And Paul says,

  579. if you do that,

  580. the Greek actually says,

  581. you're just a noisy

  582. piece of bronze.

  583. Now you don't understand this

  584. but even in this scripture

  585. there's a lot of history here.

  586. So Corinth was the center

  587. of bronze production

  588. in all of Europe.

  589. I mean,

  590. it was the most famous

  591. place to get bronze.

  592. If you were in Rome,

  593. because mirrors were not

  594. made out of glass,

  595. they were made out of metal,

  596. really metal.

  597. And so that's what he says

  598. in looking in the mirror dimly.

  599. You're seeing this reflection

  600. out of metal.

  601. But everybody wanted mirrors

  602. from Corinth

  603. because that was the place

  604. to buy bronze stuff.

  605. And so the historians tell us

  606. that when you went

  607. into the center of the city

  608. that there were like

  609. five or six hundred

  610. bronze makers

  611. and they were in the middle

  612. of the center of the city

  613. and when you walked in there

  614. all you heard was this.

  615. Five hundred people

  616. just in the middle

  617. you can't hear anything.

  618. And historians say

  619. if you want to talk to people

  620. you got to get like this close

  621. to their ear

  622. and you go

  623. okay, okay, okay, okay.

  624. But you couldn't hear anything

  625. because it was just like

  626. and Paul says

  627. that's what we're like

  628. if we use our gifts

  629. and we don't have love.

  630. That's what we're like

  631. if we're not other centered.

  632. That's what we're like

  633. if we're thinking about ourselves.

  634. That's what we're like.

  635. And he says in the end

  636. it's nothing.

  637. And he's not saying

  638. that your life

  639. produced nothing.

  640. What he's actually saying

  641. is that your life

  642. is nothing.

  643. Nothing.

  644. In verse two

  645. there's another group of people

  646. and they've come up

  647. and they said

  648. hey, we know how to live.

  649. We're going to live by prophecy.

  650. We're going to get

  651. we know all of God's mysteries.

  652. We know all this knowledge.

  653. We have all this wisdom.

  654. We have all this discernment.

  655. We have all these teaching skills.

  656. We just know all these things.

  657. We know how to read the Bible.

  658. We know how to study it.

  659. They have the gift of teaching.

  660. They have the gift of preaching.

  661. They have the gift of pastoring.

  662. They have all these gifts

  663. and they're saying

  664. I'm going to use these gifts

  665. to the fullest

  666. and I'm going to do it.

  667. And Paul says

  668. yeah, you can do that.

  669. But if you don't have love

  670. it's worthless.

  671. But you can be the best pastor

  672. in the world

  673. but if you're not thinking

  674. that up other people

  675. if you're not loving other people

  676. if you're not being

  677. outwardly focused

  678. it's worthless.

  679. It means nothing.

  680. Verse two

  681. there's some people in the church

  682. who say this

  683. they say

  684. I have faith

  685. I believe

  686. I trust

  687. I have the vision

  688. of the future

  689. I can dream

  690. God has given me

  691. these intuitions

  692. I know what to do

  693. I know where to go

  694. we're going to do these things

  695. Jesus said

  696. if we just had the faith

  697. the size of a mustard seed

  698. we could say to that mountain

  699. mountain get up

  700. and the mountain would jump up

  701. and the mountain would go

  702. into the ocean.

  703. So faith is powerful

  704. and it's incredible

  705. and it can control your life

  706. and it can do amazing things

  707. but Paul says

  708. if it's just doing things

  709. for you

  710. if you're just serving yourself

  711. if you're not thinking

  712. about other people

  713. if you're not helping other people

  714. if you're not outwardly focused

  715. you're nothing.

  716. There's another group of people

  717. in the church

  718. and they go

  719. well we know how to do it

  720. this is the best way to live

  721. in verse three

  722. we know how

  723. and why God has called

  724. we know what to do

  725. with our lives

  726. so that God loves us

  727. that God is pleased with us

  728. that God gives us

  729. all the things that we need

  730. and this is what we're going to do

  731. we're just going to give

  732. everything we have to the poor

  733. the imagery is almost like

  734. a piece of bread

  735. and they're just picking pieces off

  736. and throwing it away

  737. and so this is what we're going to do

  738. with our life

  739. we're just going to pick off

  740. pieces of our life

  741. and we're going to

  742. we're going to give it to the poor

  743. we're going to serve

  744. we're going to do mercy

  745. we're going to do justice

  746. and if we do all these things

  747. if we give our life away

  748. surely God is going to be

  749. pleased with us

  750. we're going to surrender our body

  751. we're going to surrender

  752. our body to the church

  753. we're going to surrender

  754. our body to ministry

  755. we're going to surrender

  756. our body to families

  757. we're going to surrender

  758. our body to our colleagues

  759. we're going to do

  760. incredible awesome things

  761. and Paul goes yeah you can do that

  762. but if you don't have love

  763. if you're not thinking of other people

  764. if your desire isn't outwardly focused

  765. if your desire isn't to enrich and bless the people around you

  766. it's no profit to you

  767. I mean it might help those people but to you it's no profit

  768. you gain nothing you are nothing

  769. Paul says that you could have your name on a hundred buildings

  770. and if you don't have love

  771. it means nothing

  772. the church is kind of deflated right

  773. there's this passage in Matthew 7 and this passage has kind of haunted me guys

  774. I mean I'm being very honest all these things we're sharing we're honest we're real

  775. that's one of our values in the church and this passage has haunted me for a long time

  776. and in this passage in Matthew 7 Jesus is talking about the end times

  777. and he's talking about the fruit in our lives

  778. and he's talking about the fruit of the spirit that grows up in our lives

  779. and he says in the end times people are going to come to him

  780. and they're going to go Lord Lord we cast out these demons

  781. Lord Lord we spoke in tongues

  782. we heal people we did miracles

  783. we did all these amazing things

  784. we had prophecy

  785. we could understand tongues

  786. people were brought back to life

  787. people were healed

  788. we did all these massive things for you

  789. Lord Lord

  790. in Matthew 7 Jesus says

  791. depart from me

  792. for I never knew you

  793. you weren't my child

  794. you didn't have love

  795. you didn't have a relationship

  796. with me

  797. and what we learn is without love

  798. there were people who were doing miracles

  799. there were people who were speaking in tongues

  800. there were people who were healing people

  801. there were people who were doing all these great things

  802. but they were doing it in their own strength

  803. and through other things that we talked about three weeks ago

  804. and he says these people at the end

  805. they think they're doing well

  806. but in the end they're not doing well

  807. no matter how gifted you are

  808. outwardly

  809. if there's not love

  810. at the core of your being

  811. you're just a noisy gong

  812. does that make sense?

  813. you can move your head up and down

  814. I just want to make sure I'm not talking to myself

  815. so in verse 4

  816. when you read the Greek

  817. in verse 4

  818. it's almost like there's this pause

  819. he goes 1, 2, 3

  820. and he gets to 4

  821. and it's almost like this pause

  822. and you kind of know what the people want to ask him

  823. because he's writing these things

  824. and you have to realize

  825. that everything he's saying

  826. the people were doing the exact opposite

  827. that's the reason he's writing these things

  828. because they were doing all the things

  829. that he's writing against

  830. and so when he says this is what love is

  831. you know that they're doing the exact opposite

  832. and so he kind of pauses

  833. and he asks this question

  834. and you know what the question is

  835. what is the question people want to ask then?

  836. what's the question?

  837. what does the Pharisee ask?

  838. the Pharisee ask

  839. well what is love?

  840. what does that mean?

  841. what really is love?

  842. what does it really mean for me to love?

  843. okay guys

  844. my kids are a mess

  845. I'm trying to figure them out

  846. I'm trying to help my kids

  847. and my kids

  848. they're not in here

  849. so I can share this

  850. because sometimes I share it

  851. and I get in trouble

  852. they're just a mess

  853. and so

  854. I'm doing some stuff in the house

  855. and all of a sudden

  856. I hear my kids

  857. cry and scream

  858. and so I've learned from Christina

  859. because usually I go in

  860. and I say

  861. who did that?

  862. but I don't do that anymore

  863. I say

  864. so what happened here?

  865. right?

  866. that's good guys

  867. you gotta learn that

  868. okay

  869. so what happened here?

  870. so people are more willing to talk

  871. and

  872. one kid says

  873. to the other kid

  874. this kid

  875. he hit me

  876. you know who it is

  877. it's the boy

  878. right?

  879. I was gonna say

  880. the kid who remained nameless

  881. but it's always the boy

  882. right?

  883. and so I look at Kip

  884. I said

  885. Kip

  886. do not hit her anymore

  887. do you understand me?

  888. he says

  889. yes sir

  890. so I go off

  891. and I'm doing stuff

  892. and all of a sudden

  893. I hear screaming

  894. and there's all this screaming

  895. and I walk in there

  896. and this time

  897. I'm a little angry

  898. and I'm like

  899. okay what's going on here?

  900. and Kip goes

  901. he hit me

  902. and Kip goes

  903. I didn't hit her

  904. I pinched her

  905. I said okay

  906. no hitting

  907. and no pinching

  908. do you understand?

  909. yes sir

  910. okay

  911. so I go back

  912. and about 10 minutes later

  913. I hear the scream

  914. this is true

  915. okay

  916. I don't know

  917. your kids are probably

  918. much better than my kids

  919. so you guys can come teach me

  920. because I need help with this

  921. but I come back in

  922. and my daughter's screaming

  923. and I said okay

  924. what happened?

  925. I know who did it

  926. she goes

  927. Kip hit me

  928. I said Kip

  929. I told you not to hit her

  930. because I didn't hit her

  931. I flicked her

  932. so I'm like

  933. okay no hitting

  934. no pinching

  935. no flicking

  936. the question is

  937. does Kip

  938. want to obey me?

  939. no he doesn't want to obey me

  940. he just wants to find out

  941. the least minimal things

  942. he can do

  943. to make dad happy

  944. and when he doesn't do that

  945. he tries to rearrange things

  946. and he does these things

  947. and he just does it

  948. right?

  949. Kip is a good Pharisee

  950. I'm a good Pharisee

  951. I read God's word

  952. he says hey

  953. I want you to

  954. to give

  955. give your time

  956. give your talents

  957. give your money

  958. what's the first question I ask?

  959. how much time?

  960. 10% of my time?

  961. 20% of my time?

  962. and I keep going on

  963. I go well

  964. how much talents?

  965. do you want me to give it all?

  966. or can I keep some for myself?

  967. 100%?

  968. or do I just keep it?

  969. how much money?

  970. I'm a good Pharisee right?

  971. I am a good Pharisee

  972. I struggle with this

  973. well how much money?

  974. 10%?

  975. 20%?

  976. 30%?

  977. 30%?

  978. do I want to obey?

  979. come on guys

  980. you can be honest

  981. do I want to obey?

  982. no

  983. I see God's word there

  984. and I try to parse it

  985. in ways that make it

  986. convenient for me

  987. but I don't really

  988. want to obey it

  989. I just want to do

  990. the least minimal thing

  991. so I don't get

  992. inconvenienced in my life

  993. and that's my struggle

  994. I struggle with

  995. legalism

  996. and Pharisees

  997. so if you ask

  998. any questions

  999. that ever do

  1000. a percentage

  1001. what you're really

  1002. saying in your life

  1003. is you're a Pharisee

  1004. and you're saying

  1005. to God

  1006. okay God

1007. I know you want me

  1008. to do this

  1009. because your word

  1010. says this

  1011. love

  1012. but what does that

  1013. really mean?

  1014. give

  1015. what does that

  1016. really look like?

  1017. and we're struggling

  1018. just like the church

  1019. of Corinth is

  1020. because we don't

  1021. really want to obey

1022. we just want to be

  1023. convenienced in our life

  1024. and so it's really

  1025. interesting

  1026. because in this passage

  1027. Paul doesn't give

  1028. a definition for love

  1029. he doesn't define love

  1030. and say technically

  1031. in the Greek

1032. this is what love means

  1033. now he actually

  1034. creates a new word

  1035. for love

  1036. in this passage

  1037. it's never used before

  1038. but he doesn't define

  1039. what it means

  1040. I mean he doesn't give

  1041. us this technical

  1042. definition

1043. but instead what he does

  1044. is in these next

  1045. couple verses

  1046. three verses

  1047. actually he gives us

  1048. about 15 verbs

  1049. to describe love

  1050. so he's not going

1051. to give us a definition

1052. but he's going to say

1053. this is what it looks

  1054. like

  1055. now remember

1056. for the first 12 chapters

  1057. the people have been

  1058. disobeying

  1059. they've been bad

  1060. they've been naughty

  1061. they've been prideful

  1062. they've been boastful

  1063. they've been rude

  1064. they've been proud

  1065. they've been self-serving

  1066. they've been self-assessed

1067. and Paul could just say

  1068. stop doing that

  1069. don't do those things

  1070. those are bad things

1071. but he doesn't do that

1072. he just starts to describe

  1073. love for us

1074. the first thing he says

  1075. is love is patient

  1076. it means long suffering

1077. it means it restrains itself

1078. it means it actively waits

  1079. for the other person

  1080. it doesn't mean

  1081. you're patiently waiting

  1082. on MTR

  1083. it means you're patiently

  1084. waiting on somebody else

  1085. a person

  1086. love is patient

  1087. it means that you're

  1088. slow to anger

1089. it means that you bear

  1090. other people's faults

1091. it means that you know

  1092. that people are different

1093. than you but that's okay

  1094. it means that people

  1095. make mistakes

1096. and you cover those mistakes

  1097. you don't bring those

  1098. out into the open

1099. but you try to love them

  1100. you don't look down

  1101. on people

  1102. you know the church

  1103. hated these words

  1104. they hated them

  1105. because we've already seen

  1106. that they can't wait

  1107. on anybody

1108. I mean when dinner happens

  1109. and the communion happens

  1110. two chapters earlier

  1111. they're eating up everything

  1112. because they can't wait

  1113. on people

  1114. a chapter ago

  1115. they're taking people

  1116. to court

  1117. because they just don't

  1118. want to be patient

  1119. with people

  1120. they don't want

  1121. to do those things

  1122. they had no patience

  1123. with each other

1124. they always put each other

  1125. first

  1126. how about us

  1127. how patient are we

  1128. how are we doing

  1129. with love

  1130. is patient

1131. the next thing he says

  1132. is love

  1133. is kind

  1134. now patience

  1135. is the passive part

  1136. of love

  1137. kindness

  1138. is the active part

  1139. kindness means

  1140. that you seek out

1141. the good of the other person

  1142. that you are proactive

  1143. you have mercy

  1144. the Greek word

  1145. actually means

  1146. to be helpful

  1147. it means you come

  1148. alongside people

  1149. you help people

  1150. I mean you look

  1151. for people in need

  1152. I mean

  1153. that's what kindness is

  1154. it's other centered

  1155. the Bible says

  1156. that it's because

  1157. of the kindness

  1158. of God

  1159. that you and I

  1160. come to him

  1161. that it's because

  1162. of God's kindness

  1163. that we are able

  1164. to see

  1165. the gospel

  1166. that we're able

  1167. to see

  1168. Jesus

  1169. kindness

  1170. motivates

  1171. people to change

  1172. you know that

  1173. the Bible says

  1174. that when you're kind

  1175. to people

  1176. they change

  1177. I never learned

  1178. that in my home

  1179. I always learned

  1180. to be tough

  1181. be authoritative

  1182. get it done

  1183. and that's what

  1184. makes people change

  1185. get the job going

  1186. but the Bible says

  1187. that kindness

  1188. is what changes

  1189. people

  1190. love is kind

  1191. so here's the question

1192. what does it look like

1193. for you to be kind

  1194. what does kindness

  1195. look like

  1196. in your workplace

  1197. what does kindness

  1198. look like

  1199. in your home

  1200. what does kindness

  1201. look like

  1202. in church

  1203. the next thing

  1204. Paul says

  1205. is love

  1206. isn't jealous

  1207. he says

  1208. that jealousy

  1209. is this eager desire

  1210. to covet

  1211. and it's the opposite

  1212. of love

  1213. it means greed

  1214. and selfishness

1215. it means that you want

  1216. to have what other

  1217. people have

1218. it means that you want

  1219. to prosper

  1220. at the expense

  1221. of other people

  1222. and the church

  1223. was jealous

  1224. the church was jealous

  1225. of their spiritual gifts

  1226. they were elevating some

  1227. they were despising others

  1228. they were jealous

  1229. of each other's finances

  1230. they were jealous

  1231. of each other's positions

1232. there were a lot of slaves

1233. and there were a lot of masters

  1234. all these things

  1235. shrugged in there

  1236. and people were jealous

  1237. of each other

1238. James is going to say

  1239. later on

  1240. in his church

  1241. in Jerusalem

  1242. that the problem

  1243. with the whole church

  1244. the problem

  1245. the church is having

  1246. all the problems

  1247. is because everybody's

  1248. jealous of everybody else

  1249. so Paul says

  1250. love

  1251. is not jealous

  1252. love is not

  1253. elevating yourself

1254. and putting other people down

  1255. but love is

  1256. elevating other people

  1257. sometimes at the expense

  1258. of yourself

1259. and you get put down

  1260. when I hear that

  1261. I go

  1262. that's hard

  1263. I don't know

1264. if I like that part of love

  1265. I don't know

1266. if I want to do that

  1267. finally

  1268. Paul says this

  1269. love does not brag

  1270. love is not arrogant

  1271. both of these

  1272. are kind of like

  1273. the twins

  1274. to jealousy

  1275. bragging is when you

  1276. try to make yourself

  1277. look good

  1278. so other people

  1279. are going to be

  1280. jealous of you

  1281. and the focus again

  1282. is on self

  1283. and on me

  1284. it builds me up

  1285. and boasting

  1286. is when you let

  1287. other people know

  1288. how well you've done

  1289. I've done so well

1290. look at what I've done

  1291. and this was arrogance

  1292. arrogance is taking

  1293. the credit for it

  1294. so we elevate

  1295. we boast

1296. and we take the credit

  1297. for it

  1298. Paul says that

  1299. love doesn't do that

  1300. Paul says

  1301. that love builds up

  1302. Paul says

  1303. that love builds

  1304. up other people

  1305. Paul says

  1306. that love

  1307. is humble

  1308. Paul says

  1309. that love

  1310. understands

  1311. that everything

  1312. you have

  1313. everything you have

  1314. everything you're wearing

  1315. everything at home

  1316. everything you have

  1317. your family

  1318. your kids

  1319. everything

  1320. your gifts

  1321. your talents

  1322. your health

  1323. everything

  1324. everything is from God

1325. Paul says that's what love understands

1326. And when love understands that it changes

1327. And it becomes meek and mild and gentle

  1328. How we doing?

1329. I mean it's a little different than the wedding verse right?

1330. Now do me a favor do not go to your friends at their wedding and go

1331. You know that verse really doesn't mean what it says it means

1332. Because you're going to crush your wedding day right?

1333. Don't be crushing your wedding day

1334. Now there's applications for that verse in the wedding day for sure

1335. But that's not what it means

1336. And I could keep going down for the next ten things but you know where Paul's going

1337. You know what he's talking about

1338. He's just giving these examples that we need to go back tonight and look at them

1339. And we need to ask ourselves well how are we doing in this?

1340. So let me ask you a question

1341. How are we doing with this?

1342. Are we other people focused?

1343. Do you realize that everything that you have

1344. Is this amazing awesome gift from God who loves you so much?

1345. Do you realize that God gave you

1346. All the things that you have right now

1347. Your gifts, your talents, everything he's given you

1348. And they weren't just for you

1349. But they were for a body of Christ

1350. And Christians coming together on a journey

1351. And they were for his glory

1352. Do all of our actions

  1353. In our life, Tobin

1354. Point outwards to other people

1355. Or do all of my actions

  1356. In my life

  1357. Point inwardly

  1358. To me

1359. You know 18 years ago

  1360. When I left Dr. Hannah's house

1361. It was actually his office at DTS

1362. I started on this journey

1363. To try to understand love

  1364. It's amazing

1365. Because you know when I first came a Christian

1366. The very first bookmark I ever got in my church

  1367. 40 plus years ago

1368. Was this bookmark on love

1369. It was the only thing I had in my Bible at that time

1370. Next week we hope to give you guys one

1371. We're getting them made right now

1372. This bookmark has changed my life

1373. Because I realized that learning about love

  1374. And growing in love

1375. Isn't going to be something that I can do like that

1376. I'm not going to be able to say to God

  1377. Okay God

  1378. I want patience

1379. Give it to me now

  1380. Because love is patient

1381. That's not how it works

1382. But what I've learned in my life

  1383. Is that just occasionally

  1384. Every so often

1385. At least once a week

  1386. I read this

1387. And I ask myself these questions

1388. So I think love is patient

1389. And so I ask myself this question

  1390. Am I

  1391. Patient

1392. I mean what does it look like for me to be patient with my friends

1393. What does it look like for me to be patient at my work

1394. What does it look like for me to be patient with my family

1395. What does it look like for me to be patient with my kiddos

1396. Specifically in different situations in their life

1397. And what does it look like for me to be patient with Christina

1398. And then I ask the question

  1399. How am I doing

  1400. And if I'm honest

1401. I get hit immediately with this flood of fail

1402. Fail, fail, fail, fail, fail, fail

1403. And you know that's okay

1404. Because we're in this broken world

  1405. And we're broken people

1406. And God is changing us moment by moment

1407. And so all I do is I just confess

1408. I say God I'm so sorry that I'm not patient

1409. Will you please forgive me

1410. And then I go to Christina

1411. Or I go to my kids

1412. And it happens a lot more than I would like

1413. And I would say I'm so sorry

1414. That I've not been patient

1415. Will you please forgive me

1416. And you know as I've been doing that over 40 years

1417. God has been changing me

1418. I learned more about grace

1419. I learned more about love

1420. I learned more about forgiveness

1421. I learned more about kindness

1422. And so what I just do is I just ask God to forgive me

1423. I say God can you give me patience

  1424. And I just surrender

1425. That area of my life to Christ

1426. And say God I have a really hard time with this

  1427. Can you change me

1428. I want to look like you

1429. I want to be patient like you are

  1430. And you know sometimes

  1431. If I'm really honest

1432. Sometimes if I'm really honest

1433. It's just easy to live life

  1434. And to not love

1435. Because things get so busy

1436. You know sometimes if I'm really honest

1437. It's easy to live life

  1438. And not love

1439. And not look at Christ at all

1440. I don't know if you struggle with that

  1441. But what I'm learning

1442. Is that the more that I see Christ

1443. The more that I see how awesome he is

1444. And how much he loves you

1445. Do you know that Christ came to earth for you

1446. Do you know that Christ

  1447. Lost his love

  1448. From God the Father

  1449. For you

1450. When Christ cried out on the cross

  1451. My God

1452. Why have you forsaken me

1453. What that means in the Greek

  1454. Is that God

  1455. Stopped loving him

  1456. God stopped loving Christ

  1457. On the cross

  1458. For you

1459. So that he could come back

1460. And start to love you again

  1461. Do you realize that?

1462. And I realize that the more I think about that

1463. The more I think about his love

1464. The more I think about what he's done

1465. The more I think about his kindness

  1466. He changes me

  1467. He changes us

1468. The passage says that God's love

1469. Is out of control for you

  1470. The only question is

  1471. Will you accept it?

  1472. Will you accept it?

1473. Father we thank you for this day

1474. We thank you for your mercy

  1475. And your grace

1476. We thank you that you are kind

1477. And that you are gentle

1478. That you're not wanting anyone to perish

1479. But you're wanting all of them

1480. To come to a knowledge

1481. A saving knowledge of your son Jesus

  1482. And what I realize

1483. That there's some of us in here right now

1484. Who we're still trying to figure out

1485. What this Jesus thing is all about

  1486. And we've hated God

1487. And we've hated what God's allowed to happen in our life

  1488. We've had these dreams

  1489. And these aspirations

1490. And these things didn't turn out the way they did

  1491. Maybe there's loss

  1492. Maybe there's sickness

  1493. Maybe there's death

1494. Maybe there's loss of something in there

1495. And we're just angry at God

1496. Because it doesn't feel like he's for us

1497. And what I pray for are those brothers and sisters in here right now

1498. I pray that you would soften their hearts

1499. I pray that just for a glimpse

1500. They would look at the cross

1501. They'd realize your love for them

1502. The sacrifice that you gave

1503. The love that you withdrawed from your son

1504. So that you could place it on them

1505. I pray Lord that you would change them

1506. Lord I know there's some of us in here

  1507. As a church family

1508. That we're going on this journey together

1509. And we're struggling with this whole idea of love

1510. And what does it really look like

1511. To be patient and kind and gentle

1512. We want to parse it

1513. We want to give a percentage

1514. Because we really don't want to give it all

1515. Lord I pray for us

1516. I pray for our hearts

1517. I pray that you would show us

  1518. That on the cross

1519. Your son didn't percentage out his blood

1520. And say okay I'll give you 10% today

1521. And that's all you need

  1522. But he gave everything

1523. He gave his whole life

1524. So that we might worship

1525. And be called your children

1526. I pray for us in here Lord

1527. That you would change our hearts

1528. When we think about love

1529. Correct us when we're wrong

1530. Show us and energize us

  1531. Where we're right

1532. But in all of it

1533. Help us just to realize

1534. That it's the center of who we are

  1535. As your people

1536. And without it we're lost

1537. And you don't know us

1538. And what I pray for Hong Kong

1539. As this church goes out

  1540. I just think

1541. What would this church be like

1542. What kind of impact would happen

  1543. In Watermark

  1544. If everybody understood

  1545. This passage of love

1546. And what does it look like

1547. And what would it look like

1548. When we engage people today

  1549. In our eating

1550. In areas we come back to

  1551. In our homes

1552. And what would it look like tomorrow

1553. And we go back to the office

  1554. And we're practicing

  1555. These ideas of love

1556. And not because we can do it

  1557. Because it's impossible

1558. The only way any of this

  1559. Could happen

1560. Is because Christ is changing us

  1561. His Holy Spirit is

  1562. Equipping us

  1563. He's gifting us

  1564. He's changing us

1565. What would it look like

  1566. If Hong Kong

1567. If 300 people left today

1568. And they were different tomorrow

  1569. Well I pray that

  1570. You've brought us here

  1571. To be a church

  1572. That's on a mission

1573. For those who are not

  1574. In church yet today

  1575. And I pray Lord

1576. That you would just show us that

1577. As we go out tomorrow

  1578. And Lord

1579. In the middle of all this

  1580. We just

  1581. We need you

  1582. We desperately

  1583. We desperately need you

  1584. And we love you

  1585. Will you teach us

  1586. What that means

  1587. Father we love you

1588. We pray all these things

  1589. In your son Jesus

  1590. Holy name

  1591. Amen

  1592. Amen

  1593. Amen

  1594. Amen

  1595. Amen

  1596. Amen

  1597. Amen

  1598. Amen

  1599. Amen

  1600. Amen

  1601. Amen

  1602. Amen

  1603. Amen
