  1. Father, we ask that you would lead us and guide us into all truth.

  2. Father, lead us and guide us into all truth.

  3. Father, you know, some of us this morning, Father, we might be very sleepy.

  4. It's going to be hard to seek all truth, Father, because we're really tired.

  5. Some of us may be, Father, very deeply distracted with some worries or some concerns,

  6. or just maybe with some excitement about something that will happen very soon.

  7. And it's hard for us, Father, in these states.

  8. You know how hard it is for us to seek the truth and to know the truth.

  9. So, Father, we ask that you would gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

  10. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us so that we might long and yearn to know the truth.

  11. Father, we confess that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life,

  12. that you are the true and living God, that you are true.

  13. So, Father, pour out your Holy Spirit. Pour out your Holy Spirit.

  14. This we ask in Jesus' name. Amen.

  15. Please be seated.

  16. Last week, my phone died as I was doing the sermon.

  17. And so when I can't see the time, that either means I'm going to be shorter than usual or way longer.

  18. So we'll see if my phone doesn't die.

  19. I'm not being blasphemous about this, but I'm going to do something in a few minutes that Jesus can't do.

  20. And I don't mean I'm going to sin, but I'm going to do something in a few minutes that technically Jesus can't do.

  21. I'm going to preside at the Lord's Supper.

  22. And you might say, well, why couldn't Jesus do that?

  23. And I can tell you, in Anglican polity, an unordained man cannot preside at the Lord's Supper.

  24. However, in fact, Jesus couldn't be the rector of this parish.

  25. He was homeschooled.

  26. No offense to homeschoolers, but he was homeschooled.

  27. He never went to a proper institution to be trained to be a pastor.

  28. He doesn't have a university degree.

  29. He didn't go to college.

  30. And by Anglican rules, actually, he wouldn't be allowed to be the pastor of this church.

  31. Now, granted, hopefully, Bishop Charlie, if I called him up and said, Charlie, I have a bit of a conundrum for you.

  32. Jesus is showing up this morning, and he wants to preach and lead communion, but he's not ordained.

  33. What should I do?

  34. And I think Bishop Charlie would say, well, if Jesus actually showed up, George, you should let him do those things.

  35. And if other people are really mad at you, I'll take the – I mean, I think he would actually say that.

  36. But technically, by Anglican rules, Jesus couldn't, you know, homeschooled, not university educated, et cetera.

  37. He couldn't preside at the Lord's Supper, and he couldn't be the rector of this parish.

  38. And in fact, I'm also trying to – we're starting a theological college.

  39. Jesus wouldn't be able to teach at the college, by the way, because he doesn't have a PhD.

  40. So, you see, actually, on one hand, the issue that provokes this discussion that ends up going into judgment is actually sort of an interesting question,

  41. and it's not a completely irrelevant question.

  42. I mean, the man who invented numbers wouldn't be allowed to be a chartered accountant.

  43. I could go on and on.

  44. You know, the man who – the person who designed the universe wouldn't be allowed to be an engineer.

  45. Like, it's sort of actually an interesting type of question.

  46. And it's sort of – it's funny, like a lot of conversations, that it begins with something which is sort of curious

  47. and ends up going in very surprising places.

  48. So, let's look again at what it is that Jesus said.

  49. What is it that the community leaders, the advice leaders, and sort of the spiritual leaders, as they all come together,

  50. what is it that they were asking Jesus, and why is it that the conversation went south so badly?

  51. So, if you have your Bibles, turn to Luke 20, verse 1, and we'll look at this text and sort of see,

    Luke 20:1

  52. on one hand, they ask a very, very legitimate and valid question of Jesus, but then it starts to go south.

  53. And here's how the text goes.

  54. Luke, chapter 20, verse 1.

    Luke 20:1

  55. And just – it begins by saying one day.

  56. Just so you sort of understand the flow of the book, right, because the book of Luke is a book,

  57. and Luke is telling a story, a true story of Jesus.

  58. And Jesus has been predicting since chapter 9 that he's going to Jerusalem to die.

  59. Last week in chapter 19, Jesus entered Jerusalem, and now Jesus is in Jerusalem.

  60. And so we don't know if this is the Monday of that week or the Tuesday or the Wednesday,

  61. but what we do know is that as this is going on, within less than a week, within four or five days,

  62. maybe even just two or three days, Jesus will have died upon the cross.

  63. And Jesus knows this.

  64. Others don't, but Jesus knows as this conversation is going on.

  65. And so verse 1,

  66. one day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel,

  67. the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up and said to him –

  68. and just sort of pause, put your finger there –

  69. this is sort of a group of three people who don't necessarily like each other.

  70. And so what – you know what's that saying?

  71. The enemy of my enemy is – no, sorry.

  72. The enemy of my enemy – yeah, something like that.

  73. Yeah, you all know the quote better than me.

  74. I should have written it down, right?

  75. I only have sort of notes.

  76. And so this is a – what unites these three groups is that they don't like Jesus,

  77. and they find him a threat, okay?

  78. Because normally sort of the elders would be like the political –

  79. because in older days, the categories that we had to divide people up doesn't –

  80. they don't quite work the same way.

  81. So think of elders as, in a sense, you know, Mayor Jim Watson –

  82. I'm not picking on him –

  83. and, you know, the local billionaires

  84. and the local power brokers in the community,

  85. the backroom boys and girls.

  86. And think of the – what they call scribes

  87. as the people who are both the guys and gals who have PhDs

  88. and are lawyers and give advice.

  89. Like, so they write the advice column.

  90. And then the chief priests, think of the people who are exemplary people

  91. in terms of spiritual and religious matters.

  92. And however you understand spiritual or understand religious,

  93. whoever you understand as being sort of the pinnacle of representing

  94. whatever it means to be religious or however you understand spiritual,

  95. these are the people who are your guides, who help you with the path.

  96. And these three different groups come together

  97. and have come to ask Jesus a question.

  98. And so verse 2, and the question is, they said to him,

  99. tell us by what authority you do these things

  100. or who it is that gave you this authority.

  101. And, you know, because Jesus is just – just before this,

  102. he's kicked the money changers out of the court of the Gentiles.

  103. He's part of the temple.

  104. He's been doing all sorts of teaching.

  105. So they say, Jesus, we don't think you're a rabbi.

  106. We understand you come from a questionable background,

  107. maybe an illegitimate birth, probably an illegitimate birth.

  108. You've just been homeschooled.

  109. No offense to homeschoolers, by the way.

  110. I'm just giving how they're sort of thinking about it.

  111. You haven't been properly trained.

  112. Like, what gives you any authority to do this?

  113. And then in verse 3, Jesus answered them,

  114. I will ask you a question.

  115. Now tell me, was the baptism of John the Baptist from heaven or from man?

  116. Now just so you understand here, Jesus is not blowing smoke at them.

  117. Okay, so this isn't like in question period.

  118. I'm not insulting politicians, just making an observation.

  119. If there's any MPs here.

  120. You know how often in question period, you know,

  121. why did the government do this?

  122. And then they get up and they – I don't know.

  123. They talk about their laundry list or how much they love their mom

  124. or how the Leafs are doing.

  125. And then they say, and you guys are doing all this, you know.

  126. And you don't really have a conversation.

  127. You just have people trying to show how good they are and clever they are

  128. and how sort of bad the other guy is.

  129. And I know I'm really stereotyping, but that's often a little bit how –

  130. and not only in politics, that's often how conversations work in bars and homes,

  131. in universities, et cetera, as well.

  132. You just try to score points.

  133. And Jesus here isn't just trying to score points.

  134. You see, the fact of the matter is that John the Baptist was homeschooled.

  135. And he also wasn't a rabbi.

  136. And so in a sense, Jesus is saying, okay, well, just before I answer your question,

  137. just answer this.

  138. Was John the Baptist – like, what about John the Baptist?

  139. Where did his authority come from?

  140. Now, just so you know, John the Baptist is known in historical circles

  141. outside of the New Testament record.

  142. Jewish and other historians refer to John the Baptist,

  143. and the people did think he was a prophet.

  144. Okay?

  145. So Jesus asks a very sort of appropriate question.

  146. In fact, what you see here is that Jesus, once again, goes to the heart.

  147. Okay?

  148. He goes to the heart of the questioners.

  149. He's trying to find out what's going on in their heart.

  150. Are they asking an honest question, or is something else going on here?

  151. What's going on in their heart?

  152. You see, we often just talk about superficial things.

  153. Jesus regularly goes at what's actually at the very center of who you are.

  154. Jesus wants you to understand who you are at the very center of who you are,

  155. and to understand who you are at the center of who you are in the context of the living God.

  156. And that's where he goes with this question.

  157. And you might think, well, why is that going to be a question that gets at the heart,

  158. the center of who I am in the context of the living God?

  159. Well, you see it by how they react.

  160. Verse 4, sorry, verse 5.

  161. And they discussed it with one another.

  162. Imagine the little, like, not a group hug, but a huddle.

  163. And they discussed it with one another, saying,

  164. if we say from heaven, hmm, he will say, why did he not believe him?

  165. And that's because John the Baptist told everybody that Jesus was the Messiah.

  166. And, like, being the Messiah, like the person who fulfills all the promises of God,

  167. that means you actually have some authority because God gave you the authority, right?

  168. But if we say, verse 6, from human beings,

  169. all the people will stone us to death,

  170. for they are convinced that John was a prophet.

  171. So they answered that they, so what did they say to Jesus?

  172. They answered that they did not know where the authority of John the Baptist came from.

  173. Now, right, they're lying.

  174. They're not being honest.

  175. They're dissembling and cloaking.

  176. And so Jesus says to them,

  177. neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

  178. In fact, actually, there's no place in their head to hear Jesus' answer.

  179. There's no place in their head to hear Jesus' answer.

  180. Now, here's, let's sort of unpack this

  181. and try to understand why this is relevant to us.

  182. If you could put up the first point, Andrew, that would be great.

  183. It might be a surprising point,

  184. but God gave me a mind to seek, know, love, and live the truth.

  185. Our minds were not made to avoid truth and exalt the self.

  186. Say it again.

  187. God gave me a mind to seek the truth,

  188. know the truth, love the truth, live the truth.

  189. Our minds were not made to avoid truth

  190. and instead to exalt the self or serve the self and its projects.

  191. That's sort of, I have to understand, that's why God gave us minds.

  192. And in a sense, it tells us that not only is that in God's original intention and creation,

  193. that's how he created it,

  194. that's why he put a mind in us to do these things.

  195. And it's also very comforting to know that in redemption,

  196. when we come to Jesus,

  197. that one of the ways that the Holy Spirit will try to convict us of sin

  198. will also be to try to get us back to this original creational intention.

  199. That the Holy Spirit and the Bible won't work in our lives to say,

  200. oh, okay, now that the Holy Spirit's in my life,

  201. you're going to love fantasies,

  202. you're going to love delusions,

  203. you're going to turn away from the truth,

  204. you're going to only believe things,

  205. or only twist things in such a way that they serve your...

  206. No, no, that's not what the Holy Spirit will do in your life.

  207. That's not what Jesus will do in your life.

  208. He'll bring you back,

  209. try to start to unbend,

  210. straighten you out,

  211. and bring you back to what God created you originally to do and to know.

  212. There's a certain whole realm of epistemology,

  213. it's sort of how people know,

  214. and it's some type of postmodern thinkers

  215. will tend to talk as if all knowledge

  216. is actually just masking pursuit of power.

  217. That, in fact, all claims to know

  218. are really actually claims manipulating language

  219. so that one group or I will have power over other people,

  220. and that that's the claim.

  221. And, in fact, of course, it's ultimately one of those...

  222. It's like a lot of ideas that sound actually very compelling,

  223. but actually it sort of doesn't make any sense.

  224. It's because, you know, on one hand,

  225. if what they're saying is true,

  226. then you shouldn't believe what they say

  227. because they're just trying to have power.

  228. But if they actually are saying this because it's true,

  229. then they've contradicted themselves, right?

  230. So it's like a lot of ideas that...

  231. And it actually sort of doesn't really line up.

  232. But they are on to something,

  233. is that, in fact, much of what goes on in my head

  234. and in your head and most people's head

  235. is actually just using our mind for utilitarian purposes,

  236. for purposes to satisfy ourselves.

  237. We get the bad news, we think of a fantasy.

  238. We get a bad...

  239. You know, we get some bad news that we don't like.

  240. We sort of just pretend that it's not there,

  241. that we get into an argument

  242. and we're more concerned about winning the argument

  243. rather than actually saying,

  244. wow, that's a really good idea.

  245. I never thought about that.

  246. Many, many years ago,

  247. there was a woman that myself and another fellow

  248. that we'd witnessed to her quite a few times.

  249. We had quite a few discussions around things about apologetics.

  250. And then she stopped coming to the fellowship.

  251. And about a year later, I go to a church

  252. or another Christian event, and she was there.

  253. And she told me that she'd actually become a Christian

  254. about a year ago,

  255. but she didn't want to acknowledge to us

  256. that we were right.

  257. So on one hand, that's not good.

  258. On the other hand, the good thing was

  259. that she became a Christian and went to another church.

  260. I mean, it's sort of funny,

  261. but, you know, God redeemed it, right?

  262. So the fact is that many of our thinking

  263. is just like the scribes and the Pharisees.

  264. You see, what they were consumed with

  265. was they just wanted to get some information from Jesus,

  266. and whatever the information was,

  267. they were going to use it to further their own agenda,

  268. to serve their self, to exalt themselves.

  269. That's how their minds worked.

  270. And Jesus is teaching us something here

  271. very, very wise and profound.

  272. It's not the case that all thinking,

  273. inevitably, is always about utility for ourselves

  274. or serving ourselves.

  275. that we understand,

  276. or at least at times we understand,

  277. that some things are just true,

  278. and sometimes we realize

  279. that we're turning away from it.

  280. I'll just show you one thing from my own life.

  281. Some of you have heard this story before.

  282. A long time ago,

  283. I got paid to do sociological research.

  284. I've taken all these courses in statistics

  285. and methodology a long, long time ago.

  286. Anyway, I had a job to do that,

  287. and so part of my job was I was working for a professor,

  288. and we were doing this project

  289. analyzing the effect of,

  290. I think we were looking at 20 different OECD nations,

  291. and we were looking at the impact

  292. of different government policies

  293. on income distribution,

  294. and whether the government policies

  295. sort of made income distribution worse,

  296. or sort of ended up making it a bit more equal,

  297. or level.

  298. And as I was doing this,

  299. I was the primary one running the numbers

  300. in the project,

  301. and as I was doing the different tests

  302. and the different statistical analysis,

  303. I'd get the results,

  304. and I'd think to myself,

  305. that just doesn't look right.

  306. That just doesn't look right.

  307. And so, you know,

  308. I was reasonably clever,

  309. and I thought,

  310. well, maybe if I control for this

  311. or try doing this

  312. or use this variable,

  313. and then I'd run it,

  314. and then I'd think to myself,

  315. no, you know what?

  316. The results just don't look right.

  317. And then one day,

  318. it was as if the Holy Spirit spoke to me

  319. and said,

  320. George,

  321. your problem is

  322. you want the United States of America

  323. to show up the worst.

  324. And they keep showing up

  325. in about the middle.

  326. And you keep looking for new ways

  327. to move the data

  328. so the U.S. will be the worst.

  329. I was very left-wing.

  330. I disliked,

  331. in fact,

  332. I hadn't even been aware

  333. until that moment,

  334. I had not been aware

  335. of the fact

  336. of how much my hatred,

  337. how much of a hatred

  338. there was of Americans

  339. and Americans

  340. as the preeminent capitalist country,

  341. that's how I would have put it,

  342. in the world at the time,

  343. how much that drove me

  344. in terms of how I thought.

  345. It was one of those,

  346. in fact,

  347. if somebody the day before

  348. had said,

  349. George,

  350. you know what your problem is?

  351. That you are driven

  352. by a hatred of the Americans

  353. and a hatred of capitalism.

  354. I would have denied it.

  355. I would have been insulted

  356. that they said that about me.

  357. I was a fearless seeker

  358. of the truth.

  359. Not.

  360. Not.

  361. And it was as if

  362. God just spoke to me

  363. and said,

  364. George,

  365. that's what you're doing.

  366. You just have to acknowledge

  367. they're above the middle.

  368. They're not the worst.

  369. Not the best either.

  370. Just around the middle

  371. at that time.

  372. I don't know

  373. what it would be like now.

  374. So, you see,

  375. here's the thing,

  376. is that it's, in fact,

  377. a common human problem.

  378. And Jesus, in this,

  379. is trying to,

  380. is pushing us

  381. to remember

  382. and understand

  383. the context

  384. to understand this story

  385. is what did God desire

  386. in creation

  387. for our minds?

  388. What are our minds,

  389. can our minds possibly do?

  390. And what is it

  391. that God wants to do

  392. when he redeems us?

  393. Well,

  394. God's intention

  395. is that we would

  396. seek the truth,

  397. know the truth,

  398. love the truth,

  399. live the truth,

  400. that we would know

  401. what is real.

  402. Now,

  403. some of you might say,

  404. hey, George,

  405. that's actually sort of a,

  406. I hadn't thought of it

  407. in those terms.

  408. I was thinking of the text

  409. in more narrow,

  410. confrontational,

  411. religious terminology.

  412. But you said,

  413. I mean,

  414. George,

  415. isn't,

  416. doesn't,

  417. don't you think,

  418. don't you think,

  419. George,

  420. that this idea

  421. at the end

  422. of the text

  423. that you read

  424. of God

  425. being like a big stone

  426. that crushes people,

  427. like,

  428. George,

  429. that surely can't be true.

  430. Like,

  431. surely,

  432. George,

  433. that is something

  434. that Christians

  435. are doing

  436. to try to create fear

  437. and it can't possibly,

  438. that can't possibly

  439. be true.

  440. Well,

  441. let's look.

  442. Let's keep reading

  443. verse 9.

  444. And Jesus began

  445. to tell the people

  446. this parable.

  447. A man planted a vineyard

  448. and let it out

  449. to tenants

  450. and went into another country

  451. for a long while.

  452. When the time came,

  453. the owner

  454. took a servant

  455. and sent a servant

  456. to the tenants

  457. so that the tenants

  458. would give the servant,

  459. the owner,

  460. ultimately,

  461. some of the fruit

  462. of the vineyard.

  463. But the tenants

  464. beat the servant

  465. and sent him away

  466. empty-handed.

  467. So the owner

  468. sent another servant.

  469. But the tenants

  470. also beat that servant

  471. and treated him shamefully

  472. and sent the servant

  473. away empty-handed.

  474. So the owner

  475. sent a third servant

  476. and this third servant,

  477. the tenants,

  478. also,

  479. they wounded

  480. and cast out.

  481. And just sort of

  482. pause here.

  483. It's not as obvious

  484. in English,

  485. but in the original language,

  486. there's escalating violence.

  487. And in fact,

  488. this third case,

  489. if you sort of try

  490. to unpack

  491. the original language,

  492. this third case

  493. of violence

  494. is so severe

  495. that it's,

  496. he needs a trauma word,

  497. that it's traumatizing violence.

  498. It's not only violence

  499. that is traumatic

  500. to the body,

  501. but traumatic

  502. to the soul.

  503. And if it happened here,

  504. we would,

  505. you know,

  506. the first one might be,

  507. you know,

  508. you come back

  509. and you got a black eye,

  510. a couple of black eyes,

  511. maybe a bruised rib.

  512. The second guy,

  513. maybe they broke their leg.

  514. The third care,

  515. the third fellow,

  516. he's been so badly beat up,

  517. the person would be rushed

  518. in the ambulance

  519. and go right through

  520. the waiting line

  521. and go right into

  522. the trauma unit

  523. for the severity

  524. of the injuries.

  525. And in the original language,

  526. there's escalating violence.

  527. Verse 13.

  528. Then the owner of the vineyard said,

  529. in a sense,

  530. said to himself,

  531. what shall I do?

  532. I will send my beloved son.

  533. Perhaps the tenants

  534. will respect him.

  535. But when the tenants

  536. saw the beloved son,

  537. the tenants said to themselves,

  538. this is the heir.

  539. Let us kill him

  540. so that the inheritance

  541. may be ours.

  542. And so the tenants

  543. threw the beloved son

  544. out of the vineyard

  545. and killed him.

  546. So this is the end

  547. of the parable.

  548. So now Jesus

  549. turns to the people

  550. and says,

  551. what then will the owner

  552. of the vineyard

  553. do to them?

  554. And he says,

  555. the owner will come

  556. and destroy

  557. these tenants,

  558. those tenants,

  559. and give the vineyard

  560. to others.

  561. When the people heard this,

  562. they said,

  563. surely not.

  564. You could also translate

  565. that as,

  566. no way.

  567. No way.

  568. But Jesus looked

  569. directly at them

  570. and said,

  571. what then is this

  572. that is written?

  573. The stone that the builders

  574. rejected has become

  575. the cornerstone.

  576. This is very interesting.

  577. Just a little bit earlier,

  578. maybe the day before

  579. when Jesus had come

  580. into Jerusalem,

  581. the crowd quoted

  582. Psalm 118,

    Psalms 118:25

  583. verse 25,

  584. about the king

  585. coming in.

  586. And now Jesus

  587. quotes to them

  588. Psalm 118,

    Psalms 118:22

  589. verse 22.

  590. And he says,

  591. the stone that the builders

  592. rejected

  593. has become

  594. the cornerstone.

  595. Everyone who falls

  596. on that stone

  597. will be broken

  598. to pieces,

  599. and when it falls

  600. on anyone,

  601. it will crush him.

  602. The scribes

  603. and the chief priests

  604. sought to lay hands

  605. on Jesus

  606. at that very hour

  607. for they perceived

  608. that Jesus had told

  609. this parable against them,

  610. but they feared

  611. the people.

  612. So,

  613. is this wise,

  614. or is it just unjust?

  615. Is it just needlessly

  616. bloodthirsty?

  617. Well,

  618. we need to actually

  619. ponder this text

  620. a little bit more

  621. before we make

  622. a hasty decision.

  623. And the first thing

  624. is this.

  625. If you could put

  626. the next point

  627. to understand this text,

  628. is that God made me

  629. to be morally sane.

  630. God made me

  631. and you

  632. to be morally sane.

  633. In fact,

  634. I would say

  635. that at the end of the day,

  636. the Bible

  637. is an outline

  638. of sanity.

  639. The Bible

  640. is an outline

  641. of intellectual,

  642. moral,

  643. spiritual sanity.

  644. And you say,

  645. George,

  646. that's an odd thing

  647. to say

  648. about a text like this.

  649. Well,

  650. here's the thing,

  651. and I actually

  652. struggled a fair bit

  653. to try to figure out

  654. how to put this down

  655. and I don't know

  656. if this has helped.

  657. But,

  658. you know,

  659. just as I said

  660. for the mind,

  661. remember how I described

  662. that with the mind

  663. that God gave me

  664. a mind to seek,

  665. know,

  666. love,

  667. and live the truth

  668. and our minds

  669. were not made

  670. to avoid truth

  671. and exalt the self?

  672. In the same way,

  673. God gave me a will

  674. to seek the good,

  675. know the good,

  676. love the good,

  677. and live the good.

  678. And not just good

  679. because goodness

  680. and justice

  681. are at one with God.

  682. That they're not at all,

  683. they never contradict

  684. each other.

  685. That you could also say

  686. that God gave me

  687. a mind to seek the just,

  688. to know the just,

  689. to love the just,

  690. and to live by justice.

  691. And since goodness

  692. and justice

  693. are at one with God,

  694. that that's how God

  695. made me.

  696. He made me

  697. to will

  698. the good

  699. and the just.

  700. And

  701. he made me

  702. not to have

  703. my will

  704. when it's confronted

  705. by what's just

  706. or what's confronted

  707. by what's good

  708. to turn away

  709. from it.

  710. And in fact,

  711. believe things

  712. that only serve myself

  713. and the projects

  714. of myself.

  715. And you see,

  716. that's another way

  717. to describe

  718. actually seeking

  719. the good

  720. and the just

  721. and loving it

  722. and living it,

  723. knowing it,

  724. and not avoiding it.

  725. What you've just described

  726. is moral sanity.

  727. Wouldn't you agree?

  728. That's what morally sane is.

  729. Lots of things.

  730. Now you might say,

  731. George,

  732. that's really good.

  733. Are you saying

  734. that only Christians

  735. are morally sane

  736. and that non-Christians

  737. are morally sane?

  738. No, I'm not saying

  739. that at all.

  740. This is a human problem.

  741. A human problem.

  742. I've shared with you

  743. before that one of the things

  744. I'm not very good at

  745. is telling people off.

  746. I'm not very good

  747. at rebuking people.

  748. And one of the things

  749. I've discovered in life,

  750. I've shared with you

  751. before,

  752. I can share it again,

  753. is that when I come,

  754. and I finally have it,

  755. you know,

  756. Louise will tell you,

  757. I've had a sleepless night

  758. the night before,

  759. maybe two sleepless nights.

  760. I'm really bad at this.

  761. And so finally,

  762. I come to try to say

  763. to a person

  764. that what they've been doing

  765. is wrong.

  766. And I can tell

  767. within two seconds

  768. whether this conversation

  769. is going to go well

  770. or badly.

  771. Is the person

  772. going to have

  773. a tender heart

  774. where they say,

  775. oh, you know,

  776. I'm really sorry.

  777. Will you forgive me?

  778. Or will they

  779. come right back

  780. and say,

  781. how dare you say that?

  782. You're completely out of line.

  783. You're completely wrong.

  784. I'm completely blameless.

  785. How dare you accuse me?

  786. I can tell within two seconds

  787. by their body language

  788. and the feel whether

  789. this is going to go well

  790. or whether it's going to go bad.

  791. I mean,

  792. how many of us,

  793. maybe even earlier on

  794. in the service

  795. when I'm praying

  796. about the fact

  797. that some of us

  798. are too distracted

  799. to know and hear the truth,

  800. how many of us

  801. are maybe too distracted

  802. to know and hear the truth

  803. because we're thinking,

  804. how dare my mother

  805. say that to me

  806. on the way in?

  807. How dare my husband

  808. say that about me?

  809. How dare my wife

  810. say that about me?

  811. How dare my boss

  812. say that about me

  813. last Wednesday?

  814. Wednesday.

  815. It's still beating me up

  816. that my boss

  817. said that about me.

  818. How dare my brother

  819. say that about me

  820. or my sister?

  821. How dare my friends

  822. say that?

  823. And we're still

  824. anxious and beat up

  825. and rebelling

  826. against it.

  827. That never happened

  828. to anybody here,

  829. I'm sure.

  830. Nobody ever

  831. has had that experience.

  832. If you say that,

  833. the confession time

  834. is for later on

  835. in the service

  836. is just for you

  837. and for me

  838. because, of course,

  839. we do say that.

  840. Of course we say that.

  841. You see,

  842. we might not say

  843. that we've ever

  844. actually been a tenant

  845. where God

  846. has sent people,

  847. but you see,

  848. in a sense,

  849. if we understand

  850. that how many times

  851. has conscience

  852. awoken within us

  853. to convict us

  854. of something

  855. that we've done

  856. that's wrong?

  857. How many has

  858. an external conscience

  859. like a wife

  860. or a boss

  861. said that we've

  862. done something wrong?

  863. How often

  864. has it been

  865. that the Bible

  866. has said

  867. that we're doing

  868. something wrong

  869. and rather than

  870. us having

  871. a tender heart

  872. to live in a way

  873. that is good

  874. and just,

  875. have we raged

  876. against it?

  877. And all we can do

  878. usually in raging

  879. against it

  880. is just it's all

  881. inside of us,

  882. but sometimes

  883. it can be that

  884. we get right

  885. in that boss's face,

  886. we get right

  887. in the mom's face,

  888. we get right

  889. in the dad's face,

  890. we get up close

  891. and personal

  892. and we rage

  893. at them.

  894. How many of us

  895. in fact

  896. maybe in the work world

  897. know that there's

  898. a person

  899. in the cubicle

  900. next door

  901. that nobody likes

  902. to ever say

  903. anything bad

  904. about them

  905. because they don't

  906. want to have to

  907. deal with the fallout?

  908. How many of you

  909. are that person?

  910. This is a human

  911. problem

  912. that Jesus

  913. is addressing

  914. in this story.

  915. So you see

  916. the first thing

  917. is all of a sudden

  918. that we realize

  919. that at first

  920. this story

  921. looks like

  922. it's just maybe

  923. a very judgmental

  924. story,

  925. but actually

  926. Jesus is putting

  927. his finger

  928. on something

  929. in the human

  930. heart,

  931. not just for

  932. the hearers

  933. back then,

  934. those nasty

  935. chief priests

  936. and scribes,

  937. oh, they're so

  938. nasty,

  939. they're so bad.

  940. Jesus is putting

  941. his finger,

  942. this text is

  943. speaking to my

  944. heart.

  945. How often

  946. do I choose

  947. moral insanity?

  948. I mean,

  949. the great comfort

  950. is what I can

  951. just tell you

  952. is that as we

  953. get closer to

  954. Jesus,

  955. as the Holy

  956. Spirit has a

  957. deeper role

  958. in our lives,

  959. as the Bible

  960. forms our minds,

  961. it will form us

  962. to moral sanity.

  963. Here are just

  964. two sort of

  965. brief takeaway

  966. points.

  967. By the way,

  968. if you can't get

  969. them written down,

  970. they'll all be on

  971. the webpage later

  972. on tomorrow,

  973. they'll be on

  974. the webpage,

  975. but here's sort

  976. of very two

  977. quick takeaways.

  978. To say to

  979. ourselves,

  980. to make a

  981. commitment before

  982. God,

  983. I will humbly

  984. seek the

  985. truth and

  986. humbly change

  987. my mind to

  988. know the

  989. truth.

  990. I didn't word

  991. that very well,

  992. but basically it's

  993. a willingness to

  994. change your mind,

  995. to acknowledge

  996. that I'm wrong.

  997. Dang it all,

  998. the United States

  999. wasn't the worst

  1000. at affecting

  1001. income distribution.

  1002. That's the truth.

  1003. I got to change

  1004. my mind.

  1005. And boy,

  1006. I didn't realize,

  1007. God,

  1008. that my mind

  1009. was motivated

  1010. in those days

  1011. so much by

  1012. hatred of

  1013. capitalism and

  1014. a hatred of

  1015. the United States

  1016. of America.

  1017. I didn't realize

  1018. that's what

  1019. drove me.

  1020. So make a

  1021. commitment.

  1022. See,

  1023. this is why

  1024. it matters.

  1025. It matters

  1026. when we go

  1027. back to our

  1028. work and

  1029. if we're a

  1030. lawyer,

  1031. if we're an

  1032. economist,

  1033. if we're a

  1034. mom with the

  1035. kids or a

  1036. dad with the

  1037. kids,

  1038. if we're a

  1039. social worker,

  1040. the truth

  1041. matters.

  1042. Make a

  1043. commitment

  1044. before God

  1045. to develop

  1046. a habit of

  1047. seeking the

  1048. truth and

  1049. being willing

  1050. to say,

  1051. you know

  1052. what,

  1053. I used to

  1054. think that

  1055. and I was

  1056. wrong.

  1057. This is

  1058. actually

  1059. more true.

  1060. And a

  1061. corresponding

  1062. thing in

  1063. terms of

  1064. moral sanity.

  1065. Make a

  1066. commitment

  1067. before God

  1068. to say,

  1069. I will

  1070. humbly

  1071. seek the

  1072. good and

  1073. humbly

  1074. repent and

  1075. seek to

  1076. choose to

  1077. change my

  1078. life according

  1079. to the

  1080. good.

  1081. That's the

  1082. next,

  1083. the second

  1084. walk,

  1085. takeaway point.

  1086. I will

  1087. humbly seek

  1088. the good and

  1089. humbly repent

  1090. and seek to

  1091. change my

  1092. life according

  1093. to the good.

  1094. Repentance and

  1095. amendment of

  1096. life.

  1097. It's a thing

  1098. that we can

  1099. take away

  1100. from it.

  1101. Some of

  1102. you might

  1103. be saying,

  1104. George,

  1105. I don't

  1106. know if I

  1107. entirely believe

  1108. you.

  1109. Maybe somebody's

  1110. here or they're

  1111. listening to it

  1112. online and

  1113. they're saying,

  1114. I know what you

  1115. think about

  1116. abortion and a few

  1117. other issues.

  1118. I don't know,

  1119. George, if you're

  1120. really morally

  1121. sane.

  1122. I don't know if the

  1123. Bible's morally

  1124. sane.

  1125. But it's at least

  1126. comforting to

  1127. know that that's

  1128. what you think

  1129. that God wants

  1130. to do in your

  1131. life.

  1132. Because it's hard

  1133. to argue

  1134. against moral

  1135. sanity.

  1136. It's hard to

  1137. argue against

  1138. that as being

  1139. a worthy

  1140. goal.

  1141. But surely,

  1142. George, this

  1143. whole thing

  1144. about the

  1145. stone and

  1146. everything like

  1147. that, surely

  1148. that's a

  1149. problem text,

  1150. isn't it?

  1151. Isn't that going

  1152. beyond this?

  1153. I sort of

  1154. understand this

  1155. idea of moral

  1156. sanity and I'm

  1157. going to make

  1158. that commitment.

  1159. But surely

  1160. this text goes

  1161. beyond.

  1162. Well, let's

  1163. look again at

  1164. verse 16 and

  1165. 17.

  1166. Let's look at

  1167. them and sort of

  1168. have it fresh in

  1169. our minds as we

  1170. think about it

  1171. again.

  1172. And remember

  1173. earlier on in

  1174. verse 15,

  1175. you know,

  1176. earlier on it's

  1177. the owner sends

  1178. the beloved son,

  1179. his beloved son,

  1180. and the beloved

  1181. son is killed by

  1182. the tenants.

  1183. And then Jesus

  1184. says, you know,

  1185. what will the

  1186. owner do?

  1187. And he says,

  1188. verse 16,

  1189. he will come and

  1190. destroy those

  1191. tenants and give

  1192. the vineyard to

  1193. others.

  1194. And when the

  1195. crowd hears this,

  1196. they say,

  1197. no way.

  1198. But Jesus

  1199. looks at them

  1200. directly and

  1201. said, what

  1202. then is this

  1203. that is written?

  1204. The stone that

  1205. the builders

  1206. rejected has

  1207. become the

  1208. cornerstone.

  1209. And you'll

  1210. notice in

  1211. some of your

  1212. texts that

  1213. there's a

  1214. little note

  1215. with cornerstone

  1216. and it says

  1217. head of the

  1218. corner.

  1219. And some of

  1220. your versions

  1221. might say

  1222. capstone.

  1223. And actually,

  1224. in the original

  1225. language,

  1226. this one word

  1227. can sort of

  1228. mean two

  1229. different types

  1230. of stones.

  1231. stones.

  1232. And you

  1233. have to sort

  1234. of tell from

  1235. the context

  1236. which one

  1237. it might be

  1238. more likely

  1239. to be.

  1240. But the

  1241. fact of the

  1242. matter is,

  1243. I wonder if

  1244. Jesus chose

  1245. a word that

  1246. intentionally had

  1247. two different

  1248. meanings,

  1249. but they're

  1250. very similar.

  1251. And if some

  1252. of your

  1253. versions say

  1254. capstone,

  1255. it's back in

  1256. the days when

  1257. they made

  1258. natural arches

  1259. without mortar.

  1260. And I guess

  1261. they'd have,

  1262. I don't know,

  1263. a wooden

  1264. structure or

  1265. whatever as

  1266. the stones

  1267. are placed.

  1268. And then at

  1269. the final top

  1270. of the arch,

  1271. they'd put a

  1272. stone that

  1273. fits perfectly

  1274. with all the

  1275. others.

  1276. And then they'd

  1277. remove the

  1278. wooden scaffolding

  1279. and that

  1280. capstone at

  1281. the top

  1282. meant that

  1283. now the

  1284. shapes of

  1285. the stone

  1286. and the

  1287. arch,

  1288. that gravity

  1289. holds the

  1290. whole arch

  1291. together.

  1292. The capstone

  1293. holds the

  1294. whole arch

  1295. together.

  1296. And the

  1297. other image

  1298. of this

  1299. text is a

  1300. foundation stone,

  1301. sort of a

  1302. bit different

  1303. than a

  1304. cornerstone,

  1305. and it

  1306. would be in

  1307. building large

  1308. stone buildings,

  1309. a very,

  1310. very,

  1311. very large

  1312. and substantial

  1313. stone that

  1314. would be

  1315. where two

  1316. walls meet.

  1317. And so this

  1318. large stone

  1319. would have to

  1320. be so strong

  1321. that it could

  1322. support the

  1323. weight of two

  1324. different walls

  1325. with gravity

  1326. wanting to move

  1327. those walls in

  1328. different directions.

  1329. And so it was

  1330. absolutely essential

  1331. to have a large,

  1332. solid foundation

  1333. stone to keep

  1334. the building

  1335. together.

  1336. And so that's

  1337. what Jesus is

  1338. saying.

  1339. Jesus is saying

  1340. the stone that

  1341. the builders

  1342. rejected has

  1343. become this

  1344. central piece

  1345. to the entire

  1346. integrity of

  1347. the building.

  1348. So here's what

  1349. Jesus is saying.

  1350. We'll just unpack

  1351. it very briefly.

  1352. The person and

  1353. work of Jesus

  1354. of Nazareth

  1355. is central to

  1356. salvation and

  1357. to life in the

  1358. kingdom of God.

  1359. The person and

  1360. work of Jesus

  1361. of Nazareth is

  1362. central to

  1363. salvation and

  1364. to life in the

  1365. kingdom of God.

  1366. The Bible

  1367. describes Jesus

  1368. as the power

  1369. of God for

  1370. salvation.

  1371. In other words,

  1372. God sends a

  1373. power for

  1374. salvation and

  1375. this power for

  1376. salvation is

  1377. that Jesus and

  1378. his death upon

  1379. the cross.

  1380. In fact,

  1381. this sense of

  1382. the stone being

  1383. rejected, there's

  1384. two different

  1385. senses that work

  1386. here.

  1387. It's a very,

  1388. very cleverly

  1389. written piece of

  1390. literature because

  1391. on one hand,

  1392. what Jesus is

  1393. saying is that

  1394. the actual

  1395. rejection of

  1396. the stone is

  1397. actually part of

  1398. what makes the

  1399. stone essential.

  1400. There's a story

  1401. at the end of

  1402. Genesis where

  1403. Joseph, his

  1404. brothers had

  1405. sold him into

  1406. slavery and

  1407. eventually Joseph,

  1408. God used that,

  1409. Joseph being sold

  1410. into slavery by

  1411. his brothers, God

  1412. used that terrible

  1413. evil thing to

  1414. actually keep the

  1415. nation of Israel

  1416. safe.

  1417. And in Genesis

  1418. 50, Joseph says

  1419. to his brothers,

  1420. you meant it for

  1421. ill, but God

  1422. used it for

  1423. good.

  1424. And in a sense

  1425. here, the people

  1426. who are going to

  1427. kill the beloved

  1428. son, they meant

  1429. it for evil, but

  1430. God used it for

  1431. good.

  1432. It became the

  1433. means by which

  1434. humanity, those

  1435. very same

  1436. tenants, could

  1437. possibly be

  1438. redeemed and

  1439. reconciled to

  1440. God.

  1441. And that's on

  1442. one hand what

  1443. it's saying here

  1444. about the text.

  1445. Christ.

  1446. But some of

  1447. you might say,

  1448. okay, George,

  1449. that's very,

  1450. very interesting.

  1451. If it's true

  1452. that in fact

  1453. God, that we,

  1454. that these human

  1455. beings meant the

  1456. killing of the

  1457. beloved son for

  1458. evil, but God

  1459. used it for good,

  1460. that it would be

  1461. the power of God

  1462. for salvation.

  1463. And this power of

  1464. God for salvation

  1465. means that the

  1466. death of Jesus

  1467. upon the cross and

  1468. his resurrection,

  1469. his death for you

  1470. and me, that it's

  1471. the means by which

  1472. we become God's

  1473. adopted child or

  1474. we become born

  1475. again or we

  1476. become justified.

  1477. It's also the

  1478. means by which

  1479. we become more

  1480. Christ-like.

  1481. It's also the

  1482. means by which

  1483. we are glorified

  1484. so that we can

  1485. be in the new

  1486. heaven and the

  1487. new earth, which

  1488. one day, Lord,

  1489. may it be soon,

  1490. God will bring

  1491. into effect when

  1492. Jesus returns.

  1493. So you might

  1494. say, okay,

  1495. George, I sort of

  1496. still understand

  1497. that, but what

  1498. about this crushing

  1499. aspect?

  1500. That's actually a

  1501. really interesting

  1502. turn that Jesus

  1503. is saying on one

  1504. hand.

  1505. You see, this is

  1506. all part of knowing

  1507. the truth, by the

  1508. way, right?

1509. I mean, one of the

  1510. things we can leave

  1511. today is to say,

  1512. God, please create

  1513. within me a hunger

  1514. and longing to know

  1515. the true, the good,

  1516. and the beautiful.

  1517. Father, create within

  1518. me a passion, a

  1519. desire, the habits of

  1520. knowing and seeking the

1521. true, the good, and the

  1522. beautiful.

  1523. And that doesn't mean

1524. that we look at the

  1525. world through rose-colored

  1526. glasses.

1527. It means that we'll also

1528. seek and know what is

  1529. real.

  1530. but we'll see and

  1531. understand the real in

  1532. terms of the bigger

  1533. picture of truth.

  1534. We'll understand the

1535. reality of evil in the

1536. context of good and the

  1537. defeat ultimately of

  1538. evil.

  1539. We'll understand the

  1540. things which are just

  1541. ugly and completely and

  1542. utterly disgusting and

  1543. revolting.

1544. And we'll see that, but

  1545. we'll see it and

  1546. understand it within the

  1547. context of the

  1548. beautiful and the

1549. triumph of God who is

1550. the true, the good, and

  1551. the beautiful.

1552. And Jesus who came from

1553. the true and the good

  1554. and the beautiful to

1555. die upon the cross to

1556. redeem those of us who

1557. are addicted to lies and

1558. evil and that which is

  1559. completely and utterly

  1560. disgusting and

  1561. despicable.

1562. And those of us who on

  1563. one hand have an

  1564. addiction to those things

1565. and cannot turn from it

1566. yet at the same time know

1567. in some sense that there

  1568. is a true, there is a

  1569. good, there is a

  1570. beautiful that we should

1571. long for, but we do not

1572. have the power to do that

1573. in and of ourselves all of

  1574. the time because we

1575. slip back to our choice

1576. of using our mind for

  1577. our own utility and

1578. using our will to choose

1579. the bad rather than the

1580. good or the just or the

  1581. loving or the fine.

  1582. That's, that's, God, God

1583. uses this evil thing for a

1584. good thing and when we

1585. seek the true and the

1586. good and the beautiful it

1587. means we'll see the world

1588. as it really is but not on

  1589. the world's terms.

  1590. Isn't that a thing to

  1591. long for?

1592. To seek, to give your

  1593. lives to?

1594. But some of you are

  1595. going to say, George,

  1596. okay, so what about

  1597. this crushing?

1598. It just seems so extreme.

  1599. Let's look at that

  1600. verse again, verse 18,

  1601. just very briefly.

  1602. Everyone who, verse 18,

  1603. everyone who falls on

  1604. that stone.

  1605. Remember?

  1606. So I remember I said

1607. there's sort of two very

  1608. interesting senses.

  1609. It's a very subtly

1610. written text that part of

1611. it is this Genesis 50

  1612. sense.

  1613. It's rejected but the

  1614. actual rejection God

1615. uses for good, he uses it

  1616. for salvation.

  1617. But look at it,

  1618. everyone who falls on

  1619. that stone will be

  1620. broken to pieces and

1621. when it falls on anyone

  1622. it will crush him.

  1623. Like how can this

  1624. actually possibly make

  1625. sense?

1626. Well, it's, we sort of,

  1627. the way we understand

  1628. that this text can

  1629. possibly make sense is

  1630. by thinking about love

  1631. actually.

  1632. It's about thinking

  1633. about love and just

  1634. to think about love.

  1635. The church fathers,

  1636. and actually thinking

  1637. about reality.

1638. Lost my place in the

  1639. notes.

  1640. Think about reality and

1641. think about love and if

1642. we think about that we'll

1643. see how this text makes

  1644. sense.

  1645. The church fathers, I

  1646. can't remember which one,

1647. they use a very, very

  1648. interesting analogy.

  1649. Let's say you have a

  1650. crystal vase, you know,

  1651. very fine, or China,

  1652. very fine China vase.

1653. You have a very, very

  1654. large, solid, hard rock.

1655. If you throw the China

  1656. vase against the rock,

1657. ends up badly for the

  1658. China vase.

1659. You throw the rock against

1660. the China vase, it ends

1661. up badly for the China

  1662. vase, right?

  1663. Doesn't matter in a sense

1664. if you throw the rock,

1665. the rock against the vase,

1666. or the vase is thrown

  1667. against the rock.

  1668. In both cases, doesn't

1669. change the rock, bad for

  1670. the vase.

1671. Here's the thing which is

  1672. behind this analogy for

  1673. Jesus, from Jesus.

1674. We have one more point to

1675. go to help us to

  1676. understand the truth of

  1677. this text.

  1678. Here it is.

1679. If you put it up,

1680. Andrew, one day the true

1681. and living God will be

  1682. unfailingly,

  1683. unavoidably,

  1684. unchangeably,

  1685. unstoppingly,

  1686. and undeniably present

  1687. and real.

1688. I'm not saying that God

  1689. isn't real now, I'm not

  1690. saying he's not present

1691. now, but what I would say

1692. is that God is always

1693. veiled to us right now.

1694. We have some sense of

1695. him and some of us, we

1696. have a very deep sense of

  1697. his reality, but it's

  1698. nothing compared to what

1699. it will be like in the new

1700. heaven and the new earth

1701. when we see God face to

1702. face and he sees us face

  1703. to face.

  1704. One day,

1705. the true and living God

  1706. will be unfailingly,

  1707. unavoidably,

  1708. unchangeably,

  1709. unstoppingly,

  1710. and undeniably present

  1711. and real.

1712. And so what we see here

1713. is a dual image of

  1714. judgment.

  1715. Because surely we also

  1716. understand how it is

1717. that a complete and utter

  1718. denial of reality,

  1719. a complete and utter

  1720. denial of reality,

1721. even on this side of the

1722. grave, ends badly for us.

1723. Like, isn't that one of the

  1724. things which is so

  1725. tragic about drug addicts

  1726. or alcoholics,

1727. is that until they hit

  1728. bottom, and hitting

  1729. bottom means they

  1730. finally realize that

  1731. they've hit a rock that

  1732. shatters them.

1733. But as reality, you know,

1734. reality makes them want to

  1735. do drugs more.

1736. Reality makes them do all

  1737. sorts of horrible things

  1738. because reality just keeps

  1739. driving them to this.

1740. And we look at them from

1741. the outside and we just

1742. see that the reality is

  1743. that reality is leading

1744. them to drink, and the

  1745. other hand, that response

  1746. to reality is ruining

  1747. them.

  1748. It's breaking them up.

  1749. It's killing them.

1750. How many of us have

1751. looked at people who are

1752. having some type of debt

  1753. problem, and that rather

  1754. than humbling themselves

1755. like a little child and

  1756. acknowledging that they

1757. have a problem and maybe

1758. have to tear up all of

1759. their credit cards or do

  1760. other types of things,

1761. but the fact of the matter

1762. is, is that somehow as they

1763. face, as they get the bill

1764. in, the way they respond

1765. to the bill is by wanting

  1766. to spend money because

1767. spending money is just, it

1768. gives them a rush, it

1769. helps them to feel better

1770. in the face of reality, but

1771. all it's doing is they are

  1772. just banging against reality

1773. and reality wins and they're

  1774. getting crushed.

1775. And so what if it is that

1776. one day, one day, for every

1777. single person who's ever been

1778. born, the veil will be

1779. lifted, and God who's always

1780. been present and always be

1781. real, he is in a sense right

  1782. completely and utterly before

  1783. us, unfailingly, unavoidably,

  1784. unchangeably, unstoppingly, and

  1785. undeniably.

1786. And on one level, if that

1787. happens, and I just want him

  1788. gone, I just can't, I don't

1789. want him here, get away, but

  1790. he's real, and I attack him.

1791. I'm only going to add badly

  1792. for me.

1793. It falls on me, bad for me.

1794. See, in fact, what this is

1795. describing is just what happens

1796. when us and our refusal to know

1797. the truth, the good, and the

  1798. beautiful actually meets the

  1799. real.

1800. And in a sense, you see, it

1801. also actually describes a dual

1802. action of God and something

1803. about how real things and

  1804. valuable things work.

1805. Because if you think about it

  1806. for a second, isn't partly our

  1807. experience of knowing truth?

1808. Like when we actually remember

1809. those times, maybe as a child,

1810. maybe just last week, maybe just

1811. yesterday or this morning, and

1812. we learned some new truth, and

  1813. it's so exciting.

1814. And isn't it in some way like

  1815. this dual action?

1816. Don't we somehow almost feel as

1817. if truth is entered into our

  1818. heads?

1819. Doesn't it at the same time

1820. almost feel as if we've

  1821. entered into truth?

1822. Like, isn't that how it works

1823. when we fall in love?

  1824. Don't we have a sense, excuse

1825. me, somehow, another, as if

  1826. somehow, another, that we

1827. actually have fallen in love,

1828. and that other person loves

  1829. us?

1830. And don't we have some type of

1831. sense that this person has let

  1832. me into their life?

1833. And don't we have some other

1834. sense that this person, that I

1835. have let them into my life?

1836. And can't that be scary to

1837. have a sense of another person

1838. who loves you coming into our

1839. lives, and into your life, and

  1840. viewing it?

  1841. Don't you see that that's

1842. actually how human beings work?

1843. That the true, the good, and the

1844. beautiful is something that we

1845. both enter into, and enters into

  1846. us?

1847. And so it is, that if it is, that

1848. we finally see the real, because

1849. God is completely and utterly

1850. real, that we will not only, if we

1851. do not, if we actually have a rage

1852. and a hatred against God, that on

1853. one hand, what will be described

1854. as we attack that God and

1855. shatters, and that God comes into

  1856. us and shatters us.

1857. And the Bible is just described

1858. in what we accept with truth and

1859. love, and don't you have the

1860. sense with beauty that somehow we

  1861. enter into it?

1862. That, you know, if you listen to

1863. something, if you like Baroque

1864. music, and you hear it well played,

1865. and you have this sense that somehow

1866. it enters into you, and then you

1867. think of all the movies, like

1868. Shawshank Redemption, and they play

1869. those beautiful parts by Mozart, and

1870. the guy says it was worth being in

1871. solitary because the music is in

  1872. here.

  1873. It's in here.

  1874. Jesus is outlining sanity.

1875. Some of you might say, George, I'm not

  1876. special like you.

  1877. I don't know what to say.

1878. I didn't know that you have this

1879. ability that you can actually stand

1880. before God, and you're looking

1881. forward to having God be present and

1882. real, and I'm not like you.

1883. I've done some really bad things.

  1884. You know what?

1885. I start to think that way, and then I

1886. get caught up with vengeful thoughts.

1887. I'm not like you, George.

  1888. I can't possibly do that.

  1889. I'm not like you.

1890. I'm not special like you.

1891. All I can say to you is this.

  1892. I am not special.

1893. See, what this text tells us is

  1894. something even more remarkable.

1895. Remember I said that the way to

1896. understand this text is ultimately

1897. to understand in the context of love.

1898. Andrew, if you could put up this

1899. final slide, it would be this.

1900. Jesus knew me to my depths, and

1901. still in love, he died for me.

1902. What does this text reveal?

1903. Jesus says, you know what, Sinclair?

1904. You know everyone who's here?

1905. I know the fact that you don't always

  1906. choose what's true.

  1907. You know what?

1908. I know that you use your mind to

1909. avoid reality, to avoid the truth.

  1910. You know what, George?

1911. I know that you can be bent out of

1912. shape for a long time because your

1913. conscience has attacked you, or your

1914. wife, or your boss, or a parishioner

1915. has said something that's true, and you

  1916. don't like it.

  1917. And I know that's what you're like,

  1918. George.

1919. I know you don't always choose moral and

  1920. intellectual sanity.

  1921. I know that that's what's going on in

  1922. you.

1923. I know that there's times that you

1924. just rage against that and reject that.

1925. And I know that you cannot stop that.

1926. And I knew all of that about you, and I

1927. died on the cross for you.

1928. I am the power that's come from God for

1929. your salvation that you are to accept by

  1930. faith.

1931. And when you accept in a weak, haltering,

1932. faltering way that this is what the

1933. gospel is, that this is what Jesus has

1934. done for you, then you know that there's

1935. nothing in your past, nothing in your

1936. present, and nothing in your future that

1937. will surprise Jesus and make him turn his

1938. face from you, because when he grips you,

1939. it is from the moment of your conception to

1940. the moment of your death.

1941. That is why, I'll say it very quickly, but

1942. if you want to turn to Romans 5, I'm just

1943. going to end with these two things just

  1944. from the Bible.

1945. That's why Paul says in Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5:6–11

1946. verses 6 through 11, he says this,

1947. For while we were still weak, at the

1948. right time, Christ died for the ungodly.

1949. For one will scarcely die for a righteous

1950. person, though perhaps for a good person one

1951. would dare even to die.

1952. But God shows his love for us in that

1953. while we were still sinners, Christ died

  1954. for us.

1955. Since therefore we have now been justified

1956. by his blood, much more shall we be saved

1957. by him from the wrath of God.

1958. For if while we were enemies, we were

1959. reconciled to God by the death of his

1960. son, much more now that we are reconciled

1961. shall we be saved by his life.

1962. More than that, we also rejoice in God

1963. through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom

1964. we have now received reconciliation.

1965. It's because Jesus knows us deeply and still

1966. he dies for us that Paul, at the end of

1967. chapter 8 of Romans, Romans chapter 8, verses

    Romans 8:31–39

  1968. 31 to 39.

1969. This is what Paul says.

1970. The final word goes to the Bible.

1971. What then shall we say to these things?

1972. If God is for us, who can be against us?

1973. He who did not spare his own son, but gave

1974. him up for us all, how will he not also

1975. with him graciously give us all things?

1976. Who shall bring any charge against God's

  1977. elect?

1978. It is God who justifies.

  1979. Who is to condemn?

1980. Christ Jesus is the one who died.

1981. More than that, who was raised.

1982. Who is at the right hand of God.

1983. Who is interceding for us.

1984. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

1985. Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution,

1986. or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

1987. As it is written, for your sake we are being

1988. killed all the day long.

1989. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

1990. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors.

1991. Through him who loved us.

1992. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present,

1993. nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation

1994. will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1995. That is not a Martin Luther King moment.

  1996. That's the Bible.

  1997. Let's stand.

  1998. Andrew, the final point.

1999. This is why we have to pray to begin the Christian life and to walk the Christian life.

2000. Dear God, please make me a disciple of Jesus, gripped by the gospel, living for your glory.

2001. That's what motivates us to live the Christian life.

  2002. To face reality.

2003. To try to learn what the true and the good and the beautiful is.

2004. Because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross.

2005. Let's bow our heads in prayer.

2006. Father, we thank you that you do not look for special people, but for ordinary people.

2007. You do not look, Father, for people who have some special gifts or special genes that allow

2008. them to always pursue the true and the good and the beautiful.

2009. But you look for ordinary people who've sometimes done just ordinary sins and sometimes have

2010. extraordinary bad things that they've done or that they desire.

2011. Father, we give you thanks and praise that you knew at times how dark our mind can be,

2012. how dark our heart can be, how dark our will can be, how dark our life can be.

2013. And knowing all that about us, still knowing clearly that you died upon the cross, Jesus,

  2014. for us.

2015. And that in your death upon the cross, you are that power of God for salvation.

2016. We thank you, Father, that when we turn to you and receive what only you can give through

2017. Jesus, that you take us as your own and that nothing will surprise you.

2018. We give you thanks and praise that that salvation is something that comes from you as a gift that

  2019. we receive.

2020. Father, pour out your Holy Spirit upon us.

2021. Make us disciples of Jesus, gripped by the gospel, who live for your glory.

2022. In Jesus' name we pray.

  2023. Amen.
