  1. Father, you know the things which preoccupy us.

  2. You know that even now, Father, even a holy place,

  3. even though Jesus is in our midst, even though we're talking to you,

  4. even though the Holy Spirit is present,

  5. Father, you know how easy it is for us to be preoccupied with so many things.

  6. Maybe it's a pain. Maybe it's an appointment.

  7. Maybe it's a word that somebody said to us beforehand.

  8. Maybe it's a dream. Maybe it's a fantasy, an idol.

  9. Father, you know how easy it is for us to be preoccupied and gripped by many things.

  10. Father, we ask that in your kindness and in your mercy,

  11. your Holy Spirit would fall with fresh power upon us this morning,

  12. that you would make us disciples of Jesus,

  13. gripped by the gospel who live for your glory.

  14. And, Father, that you would help our hearts to be gripped with the words of Jesus

  15. and so that we might live our lives by them.

  16. Father, this we ask, and we ask it in the name of Jesus,

  17. your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  18. Please be seated.

  19. So, I had a small, odd type of experience this morning.

  20. Not that odd, but between the two services,

  21. I go have a coffee at a coffee shop nearby.

  22. And on the way back, I'm praying about my talk.

  23. And, you know, there's always things about your talk that you...

  24. I always have things about my talk I'm not sure about.

  25. Anyway, I was praying about it,

  26. and it was as if God told me that I had to change my introduction,

  27. the one that I'd been working on all week.

  28. And that's what I'm about to do,

  29. because I really had this sense that God told me that I was supposed to do it.

  30. Afterwards, coffee, you can ask me what my original introduction was going to be.

  31. And that's this.

  32. If I was to be able to tell university students and professors

  33. and people who work in certain types of professions,

  34. especially things like social work and in politics,

  35. if I was to tell you that there were...

  36. If I was to say that there were...

  37. If I had a chance,

  38. I would say that there's two or three passages in the Bible in particular

  39. that everybody in university or in social work or in politics

  40. should meditate upon deeply,

  41. maybe even weekly,

  42. and take deeply to heart.

  43. And there'd be two or three or four texts like that

  44. that I would say that are absolutely essential

  45. in our day and age to develop a Christian mind.

  46. And the text in Luke,

  47. which I just read...

  48. I didn't write it.

  49. I read a few minutes ago.

  50. That would be one of those texts

  51. that I would say that

  52. that just about every academic,

  53. every university student,

  54. every professor,

  55. social work,

  56. politician,

  57. a few other professions as well,

  58. economists,

  59. that you need to,

  60. we need to deeply meditate upon this

  61. on a regular basis

  62. if we want to be able to begin to think Christianly.

  63. So let's look.

  64. That's a pretty big claim

  65. that a text like this Luke text

  66. is so fundamental to developing a Christian mind.

  67. It's a pretty big claim.

  68. So let's look at it

  69. and we'll see maybe why

  70. I would make such a big claim about the text.

  71. So it was Luke chapter 21

    Luke 21 chapter mention

  72. and we're back after a couple of weeks.

  73. We'll have a few weeks,

  74. you know,

  75. over the next week

  76. where we,

  77. a few weeks where we don't look at Luke,

  78. the gospel of Luke,

  79. but we're moving towards

  80. finishing the gospel of Luke.

  81. And today we're at Luke chapter 21

    Luke 21 chapter mention

  82. and we'll begin at verse five again.

  83. And here's how the text goes.

  84. And while some were speaking of the temple,

  85. how it was adorned with noble stones and offerings,

  86. and just sort of pause there,

  87. ancient historians,

  88. both Roman and Jewish,

  89. commented that

  90. even though the temple

  91. wasn't one of the seven wonders of the world,

  92. many of them said

  93. that it was more glorious

  94. than the seven wonders of the world,

  95. that it was a spectacular piece of architecture.

  96. It was begun,

  97. a rebuilding,

  98. rejuvenation of the temple

  99. was begun about 20 years

  100. before the birth of Jesus.

  101. And in fact,

  102. the temple was to outlive Herod,

  103. in a sense,

  104. the building project outlived Herod.

  105. And even while

  106. they were talking about this,

  107. the temple was continually

  108. being added upon

  109. and made more beautiful.

  110. The work would continue

  111. until the early 60s,

  112. about another 30 years

  113. after this incident.

  114. So it was known in antiquity

  115. as a spectacularly beautiful building.

  116. And then verse 6.

  117. So they say this to Jesus

  118. because they're proud of it.

  119. It's Jewish people.

  120. They're proud of its beauty.

  121. They're proud of everything

  122. that it symbolizes

  123. about religion

  124. and God's presence with them.

  125. And Jesus responds

  126. in a very surprising way.

  127. It would have been,

  128. it'd be hard for us

  129. just to imagine

  130. how deeply shocking

  131. it would be to them.

  132. But Jesus says in verse 6,

  133. as for these things that you see,

  134. the days will come

  135. when there will not be left here

  136. one stone upon another

  137. that will not be thrown down.

  138. Now just sort of pause there

  139. before we keep reading.

  140. There's a couple of things in it.

  141. The first thing is

  142. that when Jesus says,

  143. it translated quite well in English,

  144. and for these things that you see,

  145. he's saying that

  146. there's going to be

  147. several things connected

  148. to the destruction of Jerusalem.

  149. And we'll see that

  150. when the people respond,

  151. they understand that

  152. he's talking not just narrowly

  153. about the destruction

  154. of the temple,

  155. but that Jesus has

  156. other things in mind as well.

  157. And in fact,

  158. for Jewish people at the time,

  159. they would have seen

  160. the destruction of the temple

  161. as not just being a catastrophe,

  162. but it would have been

  163. a catastrophe for the people.

  164. It would have been a sign

  165. of God's judgment upon the people.

  166. And so they're very,

  167. very curious that Jesus

  168. would say something like this

  169. is about to happen.

  170. And the other thing

  171. which is about this text is

  172. I would be one of those people

  173. that would be described

  174. by outsiders

  175. as taking the Bible literally.

  176. And there's a way

  177. to understand that

  178. which is true.

  179. I take the Bible seriously.

  180. I believe that

  181. even though this was originally

  182. an historical document

  183. written about 30 years,

  184. 34 years,

  185. 35 years after the death

  186. and resurrection of Jesus

  187. as a result of historical research,

  188. I would believe

  189. that it is also

  190. God's word written,

  191. that every word

  192. that God wanted

  193. to have written down

  194. there was written down.

  195. But we have to understand

  196. that people,

  197. we just always talk

  198. in metaphors

  199. and analogies.

  200. It's just the way

  201. that human beings talk.

  202. Human beings have always talked

  203. with metaphors

  204. and analogies.

  205. And so when it says here

  206. that there will not be

  207. one stone upon another

  208. that will not be thrown down,

  209. Jesus is using a metaphor

  210. of total and complete destruction.

  211. So it's not the case

  212. that if you went back in time

  213. and you heard Jesus say this

  214. and then in the year 70

  215. when the temple was destroyed

  216. you put a stone

  217. on top of another stone

  218. and said,

  219. ha ha ha,

  220. Jesus was wrong.

  221. It wouldn't work like that.

  222. It doesn't literally mean

  223. that after the destruction

  224. there isn't one stone

  225. upon another.

  226. It's a metaphor.

  227. It's a way of talking

  228. about complete

  229. and total destruction,

  230. unusability of the temple.

  231. And that's what Jesus says.

  232. Look at that verse 6 again.

  233. It's for these things

  234. that you see.

  235. Look at the temple,

  236. all of these things.

  237. Okay?

  238. The days will come,

  239. plural,

  240. so there's going to be

  241. a variety of things

  242. that happen,

  243. when there will not be left here

  244. one stone upon another

  245. that will not be thrown down.

  246. So the people around Jesus

  247. are desperately interested

  248. in this.

  249. And so they say

  250. in verse 7,

  251. they're going to ask Jesus,

  252. two questions.

  253. And one of the things

  254. you're going to notice

  255. is that Jesus,

  256. by the time we get

  257. to verse 38,

  258. Jesus doesn't answer

  259. one of the questions.

  260. He answers just

  261. one of the two questions

  262. and he also answers

  263. a question they don't ask,

  264. but they should have asked.

  265. And here's what they say,

  266. verse 7,

  267. and they asked him,

  268. teacher,

  269. when will these things be

  270. and what will be the sign

  271. when these things

  272. are about to take place?

  273. So in other words,

  274. when's it going to happen?

  275. What are the signs

  276. that it's about to happen?

  277. Jesus never answers

  278. the when question.

  279. He's going to talk

  280. about the signs,

  281. but before that,

  282. he takes sort of a

  283. sideways look

  284. at the whole question.

  285. And that begins

  286. in verse 8.

  287. It's actually going to continue

  288. right up to verse 19,

  289. but we'll just read 8 and 9

  290. and then pause.

  291. Jesus said,

  292. see that you are not

  293. led astray.

  294. Remember that?

  295. Jesus doesn't want

  296. his people to be led astray.

  297. He doesn't want

  298. any human being

  299. to be led astray.

  300. For many will come

  301. in my name saying,

  302. I am he,

  303. and the time is at hand.

  304. In other words,

  305. many people will come

  306. claiming to be the Messiah,

  307. or they will come

  308. claiming to know

  309. how history is moving,

  310. and they will claim

  311. to know exactly

  312. what the direction

  313. of history

  314. and the specific

  315. important moment

  316. that we are now in

  317. in terms of

  318. history's direction.

  319. And Jesus says,

  320. do not go after them.

  321. And when you hear

  322. of wars and tumults,

  323. do not be terrified,

  324. for these things

  325. must first take place,

  326. but the end

  327. will not be at once.

  328. Now, one of the things

  329. I've done today,

  330. I'm going to describe

  331. the points,

  332. but I've turned

  333. all of the points

  334. into prayers.

  335. You see,

  336. one of the things,

  337. the vision for our church

  338. is it will be

  339. a prayerful,

  340. Bible-teaching

  341. church,

  342. amongst other things.

  343. And so,

  344. one of the things

  345. I want to try to do

  346. is to help you

  347. to learn how to pray,

  348. help myself to learn

  349. how to pray,

  350. to learn to pray the Bible.

  351. I mean,

  352. how can you go wrong

  353. as a follower of Jesus

  354. if you learn to pray

  355. in response

  356. to what Jesus says?

  357. So, here's the first thing.

  358. If you could put it up,

  359. Andrew.

  360. Dear God,

  361. please grow in me

  362. a complete

  363. and total

  364. rejection

  365. of every

  366. Messianic

  367. and Utopian

  368. movement

  369. and vision.

  370. There you go.

  371. Dear God,

  372. please grow in me

  373. a complete

  374. and total

  375. rejection

  376. of every

  377. Messianic

  378. and Utopian

  379. movement

  380. and vision.

  381. By the way,

  382. this doesn't mean

  383. that you should reject

  384. Messianic Jews.

  385. some Jewish people

  386. who become Christians

  387. refer to themselves

  388. as Messianic Jews

  389. because they believe

  390. the Messiah has come.

  391. I'm not referring to this.

  392. Here's the thing.

  393. This is one of the reasons,

  394. by the way,

  395. why I said

  396. that every university student

  397. and professor

  398. and those in politics,

  399. they need to meditate

  400. upon this text.

  401. What we're going to see

  402. is that from verses

  403. 8 to 19,

  404. Jesus gives

  405. a whole series

  406. of non-signs.

  407. Okay?

  408. In other words,

  409. the world thinks

  410. that these things

  411. are very important

  412. and the Bible's

  413. not going to downplay it.

  414. I'm going to get back to that.

  415. The Bible's not dismissing

  416. these as being

  417. unimportant things.

  418. What Jesus is going to say,

  419. these are non-signs.

  420. This is normal life.

  421. That's what Jesus is saying.

  422. This is normal life.

  423. This isn't a sign

  424. of the end.

  425. And the reason

  426. that those of us

  427. who've gone far

  428. in education

  429. need to study

  430. or are involved

  431. in politics

  432. is that,

  433. in fact,

  434. it's hard for modern

  435. Canadians to think

  436. without thinking

  437. in terms of the categories

  438. of messianic

  439. and utopian

  440. visions

  441. and movements.

  442. And in fact,

  443. a significant part

  444. of what goes on

  445. in academia

  446. is helping us

  447. to become

  448. accommodated

  449. to different

  450. visions

  451. of how

  452. history is moving,

  453. of how morality

  454. is progressing,

  455. of what is

  456. right and wrong

  457. in terms of

  458. utopian

  459. or messianic

  460. visions

  461. or understandings

  462. of where history

  463. is going

  464. to some type

  465. of utopia.

  466. And it's so deeply

  467. embedded

  468. in how we talk

  469. and how we analyze

  470. things.

  471. And often,

  472. university education,

  473. I mean,

  474. it does other things

  475. as well.

  476. I mean,

  477. it teaches you

  478. how to do statistics

  479. and, you know,

  480. there's obviously,

  481. it does more than this.

  482. But it's deeply

  483. interwoven

  484. into the categories

  485. of modern thought,

  486. increasingly into

  487. the categories of law,

  488. deeply interwoven

  489. in politics,

  490. sociology,

  491. economics,

  492. literary theory,

  493. religious studies.

  494. And what Jesus

  495. is going to say

  496. is that every single

  497. one of these

  498. utopias

  499. and visions

  500. is wrong.

  501. Every one

  502. without exception,

  503. none of them

  504. will take place.

  505. Every one

  506. will lead you

  507. astray.

  508. Every one.

  509. There will not

  510. come a time

  511. when poverty

  512. is eradicated.

  513. Gosh,

  514. aren't you glad

  515. you came to church

  516. this morning?

  517. Haven't I just

  518. lifted up your spirits?

  519. There will never

  520. be a time

  521. that poverty

  522. is eradicated.

  523. There is never

  524. going to be a time

  525. when there will not

  526. be violence.

  527. There will never

  528. be a time

  529. when there will not

  530. be war.

  531. There will never

  532. be a time

  533. when there is

  534. universal prosperity.

  535. Star Trek

  536. is wrong.

  537. Yes,

  538. I'm sorry.

  539. I've really

  540. ruined

  541. some people's

  542. weeks.

  543. But Star Trek

  544. is wrong.

  545. There will not

  546. be this time

  547. of universal

  548. peace on the earth

  549. where mankind

  550. and womankind

  551. go boldly

  552. to explore places

  553. that have never

  554. come before.

  555. It's just

  556. not going

  557. to happen.

  558. That's the claim

  559. that Jesus

  560. makes.

  561. By the way,

  562. for 2,000 years

  563. since this,

  564. there have been

  565. countless secular

  566. and religious

  567. versions of

  568. utopian and

  569. messianic visions

  570. and they've all

  571. been wrong.

  572. 2,000 years

  573. of Jesus being

  574. correct.

  575. And yet today,

  576. and I'm not

  577. picking on the

  578. left,

  579. it happens to be

  580. that right now,

  581. other than Star Trek,

  582. which is sort of a

  583. right wing,

  584. well,

  585. sort of soft

  586. left,

  587. therapeutic

  588. version of this.

  589. You know,

  590. but today,

  591. we tend to think

  592. primarily of

  593. progressive in

  594. what would be

  595. called left-wing

  596. or liberal

  597. categories,

  598. but that's just

  599. an historical

  600. accident.

  601. In fact,

  602. it's only a

  603. historical accident

  604. in certain forms.

  605. There's a version

  606. of Islam,

  607. which is inherently

  608. messianic and

  609. utopian,

  610. and that's what

  611. drives the terrorists,

  612. and to some extent,

  613. much Muslim thought.

  614. There's Hindu

  615. versions of it,

  616. but we're far more

  617. familiar with it

  618. in terms of

  619. different views

  620. around the left

  621. and in terms of

  622. gender and sexuality.

  623. But in the past,

  624. there's been right-wing

  625. versions of this

  626. as well,

  627. and even Christianized

  628. versions using

  629. Christian language.

  630. And Jesus is saying

  631. here,

  632. I'm going to describe

  633. normal life.

  634. And in normal life,

  635. as we're going to see

  636. in a moment,

  637. there's going to be

  638. earthquakes,

  639. there's going to be

  640. famines,

  641. there's going to be

  642. pestilences,

  643. there's going to be

  644. social unrest,

  645. there's going to be

  646. social chaos,

  647. there's going to be

  648. war,

  649. there's going to be

  650. false messiahs,

  651. there's going to be

  652. religious misleaders,

  653. there's going to be

  654. persecution,

  655. there's going to be

  656. oppression,

  657. this is normal life.

  658. I know I've really

  659. encouraged you,

  660. but we'll get to some

  661. hope and encouragement

  662. in the midst of it.

  663. And so the first thing

  664. that we can pray,

  665. in fact,

  666. you know,

  667. maybe if I lose you

  668. and you fall asleep

  669. for the rest of the

  670. sermon,

  671. there's this point,

  672. maybe I'll wake you up

  673. again later on

  674. or something like that

  675. or drag you off of

  676. your Facebook updates,

  677. but this is a really

  678. important prayer for us

  679. to pray,

  680. especially if you

  681. actually don't think

  682. it's true.

  683. And the more you

  684. don't think it's true

  685. of the economics

  686. or sociology

  687. or English literature

  688. that you're taking,

  689. then you have to

  690. pray this the most.

  691. Because it means

  692. we're not even aware

  693. of how much

  694. Messianic and

  695. Utopian visions

  696. are influencing

  697. the categories

  698. of our thought.

  699. So as we go on

  700. through these next

  701. verses,

  702. which will go on

  703. far quicker,

  704. the first point is,

  705. Dear God,

  706. please grow in me

  707. a complete and

  708. total rejection

  709. of every Messianic

  710. and Utopian

  711. movement

  712. and vision.

  713. Let's keep looking.

  714. Some of you are going

  715. to say,

  716. George,

  717. isn't this depressing?

  718. Like, George,

  719. you've been really,

  720. really,

  721. really,

  722. really,

  723. really bleak.

  724. Like, George,

  725. if this is the case,

  726. why don't Christians

  727. just all go build

  728. bomb shelters

  729. in northern Ontario

  730. or North Dakota

  731. or Wyoming

  732. or Idaho

  733. and stockpile

  734. canned goods

  735. and bottled waters

  736. and just sort of

  737. wait for the end

  738. to come.

  739. Well, actually,

  740. I think historically

  741. when Christians

  742. take the words

  743. of Luke 21

  744. the most seriously,

  745. it never leads us

  746. to be in bomb shelters.

  747. In fact,

  748. Jesus is going to

  749. tell us in a few

  750. verses

  751. that that's the exact

  752. opposite thing

  753. of what we should do.

  754. And in fact,

  755. it's actually really

  756. important for us

  757. doing concrete things

  758. to help injustice

  759. and help the poor.

  760. Because, you see,

  761. if we actually believe

  762. wrong things

  763. that don't work,

  764. then it's not going

  765. to help us

  766. do any type

  767. of earthly good.

  768. It will only lead us

  769. to do earthly harm.

  770. Let's just continue

  771. to see how Jesus

  772. sort of purges our minds.

  773. Verse 10,

  774. Then Jesus said to them,

  775. Nation will rise

  776. against nation

  777. and kingdom

  778. against kingdom.

  779. There will be

  780. great earthquakes

  781. and in various places

  782. famines

  783. and pestilences,

  784. and there will be

  785. terrors

  786. and great signs

  787. from heaven.

  788. But before all this,

  789. they will lay

  790. their hands on you,

  791. he's talking to Christians,

  792. and persecute you,

  793. delivering you up

  794. to the synagogues

  795. and prisons,

  796. and you will be brought

  797. before kings

  798. and governors

  799. for my name's sake.

  800. I mean,

  801. one of the people

  802. who's listening to this

  803. is,

  804. some of the people

  805. who are listening to this,

  806. that's exactly

  807. what's going to happen.

  808. That's going to happen

  809. to them

  810. within a few years

  811. of this,

  812. even though they're

  813. not aware of it.

  814. This will be your

  815. opportunity

  816. to bear witness.

  817. Here's the first

  818. little bit of a turn

  819. in terms of

  820. bearing some type

  821. of hope.

  822. That,

  823. this sounds

  824. really depressing,

  825. especially when it

  826. talks about persecution,

  827. and Jesus wants us

  828. to understand

  829. that when persecution

  830. happens to us,

  831. it's not that we have

  832. to feel really

  833. sorry for ourselves.

  834. I mean,

  835. it's fine to come

  836. to God with

  837. our struggles

  838. with the fact

  839. that nobody

  840. likes to be persecuted,

  841. nobody likes

  842. to be slandered,

  843. nobody likes

  844. to have their name

  845. dragged through the mud,

  846. nobody likes

  847. to be misunderstood,

  848. nobody likes

  849. to be beaten up

  850. or have bad

  851. financial things

  852. happen to them,

  853. and it's fine

  854. for us to come

  855. to God in prayer,

  856. pouring out our

  857. heart about this,

  858. but at the end

  859. of the day,

  860. for some reason

  861. in the mystery

  862. of God,

  863. we are to understand

  864. that we,

  865. it's not that we've

  866. got to do this,

  867. that we get to do it,

  868. we get to bear

  869. witness to Jesus.

  870. we get to bear

  871. witness to Jesus.

  872. I'm going to talk

  873. about this,

  874. I haven't talked

  875. about this in a long

  876. time,

  877. but some of you

  878. might or might not

  879. know that we used

  880. to own a church

  881. building,

  882. and we used to be

  883. part of the Anglican

  884. Diocese of Ottawa,

  885. and just over

  886. eight years ago,

  887. we,

  888. after a long period

  889. of trying to deal

  890. with the denomination,

  891. we realized the time

  892. had come when in

  893. faithfulness to Jesus

  894. and in trust and

  895. belief in the Bible

  896. that we could no

  897. longer be part of

  898. the denomination,

  899. and there was all

  900. sorts of slanderous

  901. things said about us

  902. in the press,

  903. and we ended up

  904. taking a stand,

  905. and we left the

  906. denomination,

  907. we ended up,

  908. the diocese sued us

  909. for something that

  910. would have eventually

  911. cost seven figures,

  912. and as part of a

  913. settlement out of

  914. court,

  915. we walked away

  916. from the building.

  917. I'm just mentioning

  918. this because,

  919. what was one of the

  920. things that happened

  921. as a result of this?

  922. I mean,

  923. and I'm not,

  924. this isn't a,

  925. one of the things

  926. that happened to this,

  927. I got to be on

  928. coast-to-coast

  929. CBC morning radio.

  930. I got to be on

  931. CTV news across

  932. the country,

  933. bearing witness to

  934. Jesus,

  935. bearing witness to

  936. why we took the

  937. stand that we did.

  938. I got to spend

  939. time with

  940. reporters.

  941. I got to be,

  942. talk to the fellow

  943. who's now the,

  944. the mayor of

  945. Toronto,

  946. about how the

  947. Bible works to

  948. change lives.

  949. And I,

  950. that wouldn't

  951. have happened if

  952. we hadn't been

  953. pursued in the

  954. courts.

  955. Just would not

  956. have happened.

  957. No,

  958. nobody's calling me

  959. up today.

  960. By the way,

  961. I am not at

  962. all missing

  963. the feeling of

  964. dread that comes

  965. when you see

  966. that it's a

  967. reporter on

  968. your cell phone

  969. and you're

  970. going to have

  971. to talk to

  972. them.

  973. I don't say,

  974. oh God,

  975. please bring

  976. that back to

  977. me.

  978. I'm not,

  979. but you know,

  980. God opened

  981. doors up through

  982. that that would

  983. not have happened

  984. otherwise and

  985. might never

  986. happen again to

  987. me,

  988. but I don't

  989. know.

  990. I don't know

  991. the future.

  992. I don't know

  993. what will happen.

  994. But here's the

  995. thing,

  996. that what we

  997. have to say to

  998. ourselves when

  999. these things

  1000. happen to us,

  1001. we can in

  1002. private say,

  1003. God,

  1004. why me?

  1005. But God is

  1006. giving us an

  1007. opportunity and

  1008. that's what Jesus

  1009. is saying.

  1010. It's the beginning

  1011. of the hope

  1012. which comes in

  1013. the text,

  1014. the peeking

  1015. out to keep

  1016. us going.

  1017. So verse 13

  1018. again,

  1019. this will be your

  1020. opportunity to bear

  1021. witness.

  1022. Settle it,

  1023. therefore,

  1024. in your minds,

  1025. not to meditate

  1026. beforehand how to

  1027. answer.

  1028. for I will

  1029. give you a

  1030. mouth and

  1031. wisdom which

  1032. none of your

  1033. adversaries will

  1034. be able to

  1035. withstand and

  1036. contradict.

  1037. Just sort of

  1038. pause there for

  1039. a second.

  1040. The original

  1041. Greek is hard to

  1042. translate here in

  1043. a simple way.

  1044. The language about

  1045. meditating beforehand,

  1046. another way to put

  1047. it, it would have

  1048. been long and

  1049. wouldn't fit well

  1050. in English,

  1051. but basically the

  1052. image is that you

  1053. spend all of your

  1054. time rehearsing a

  1055. speech as if you're

  1056. in a play.

  1057. And what Jesus is

  1058. saying is,

  1059. okay,

  1060. don't spend all

  1061. your time back

  1062. in a practice

  1063. room rehearsing

  1064. what you're going

  1065. to say.

  1066. Go out and

  1067. live.

  1068. Go out and

  1069. bear witness.

  1070. And as we're

1071. going to see in a

  1072. moment, go out

  1073. and help the

  1074. poor and go out

  1075. and try to deal

  1076. with injustice and

  1077. go out and share

  1078. the gospel and go

  1079. out and do all

  1080. these things.

  1081. Don't spend all

  1082. your time rehearsing

  1083. what you're going

  1084. to say like you're

  1085. in a play.

  1086. Okay?

  1087. Go out.

  1088. Go out.

  1089. Get on your

  1090. knees, then stand

  1091. up and get off

  1092. your duff and go

  1093. out and do

  1094. things.

  1095. And that's what

  1096. Jesus is saying.

  1097. And also notice

  1098. here a very, very

  1099. subtle way that

  1100. Jesus is making a

  1101. claim to be God

  1102. and he's claiming

  1103. to rise from the

  1104. dead.

  1105. Look at verse 15

  1106. again.

  1107. For I, I will

  1108. give you a mouth

  1109. and wisdom.

  1110. I will give you

  1111. these words.

  1112. This is dynamite.

  1113. This is dynamite.

  1114. Part of the flow

  1115. of the book is

  1116. that Jesus is

  1117. saying this right

  1118. from Luke chapter

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1119. 9 on to here.

  1120. Jesus is saying,

  1121. I'm going to

  1122. Jerusalem to die.

  1123. I'm going to

  1124. Jerusalem to die.

  1125. I'm going to

  1126. Jerusalem to die.

  1127. Jesus is now in

  1128. Jerusalem.

  1129. And when we next

  1130. look at the next

  1131. chapter, the next

  1132. chapter is about

  1133. the finalizing of

  1134. the plot to put

  1135. Jesus to death.

  1136. It's about the

  1137. last supper and

  1138. about, in other

  1139. words, like 48

  1140. hours after Jesus

  1141. says this, he's

  1142. going to be dying

  1143. on a cross.

  1144. And he's

  1145. pointing to the

  1146. fact that he's

  1147. going to rise,

  1148. which he's also

  1149. been telling people

  1150. since Luke chapter

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1151. 9.

  1152. I'm going to

  1153. rise from the

  1154. dead.

  1155. And he gives

  1156. himself the type

  1157. of power that

  1158. only God can

  1159. give.

  1160. What is Jesus

  1161. saying?

  1162. If George had

  1163. any degree of

  1164. ability to speak

  1165. to the fellow who

  1166. is now the mayor

  1167. of Toronto, it's

  1168. not because George

  1169. is clever, but

  1170. because Jesus gave

  1171. me the words.

  1172. That is a

  1173. profound claim that

  1174. Jesus is making,

  1175. that he will

  1176. conquer sin and

  1177. death and all

  1178. hostile spiritual

  1179. powers as he

  1180. dies and rises,

  1181. and that he is

  1182. God.

  1183. We'll continue

  1184. on.

  1185. Verse 16, you

  1186. will be delivered

  1187. up even by parents

  1188. and brothers and

  1189. sisters and relatives

  1190. and friends, and

  1191. some of you they

  1192. will put to death.

  1193. You will be hated

  1194. by all for my

  1195. name's sake.

  1196. Who would want

  1197. to become a

  1198. Christian, eh?

1199. But not a hair of

  1200. your head will

  1201. perish.

  1202. Once again, this is

  1203. a symbol.

  1204. It's not literal.

  1205. It's not that if

1206. all of a sudden you

1207. came up to me and

1208. said, cut some of my

  1209. hair, he said,

  1210. aha, Jesus is

  1211. wrong.

  1212. No.

  1213. It doesn't

  1214. contradict it.

  1215. Jesus is saying,

  1216. God, I care for

  1217. you.

  1218. You become my

  1219. disciple.

  1220. You trust me with

  1221. your life.

  1222. You let me into

  1223. your life.

1224. I let you into my

  1225. life and I care

  1226. for you.

  1227. I care for even

  1228. the tiniest details.

  1229. And Jeremiah has

  1230. had us singing this

  1231. song for the last,

  1232. I don't know,

  1233. four or five months.

  1234. It has a spectacular

  1235. line and a deeply

  1236. biblical line.

  1237. In fact, I meant

1238. to ask him to sing

  1239. it and I forgot

  1240. to do it.

  1241. Earth has no sorrow

  1242. that heaven can't

  1243. heal.

  1244. Or won't heal,

  1245. can't heal?

  1246. I think it's can't

  1247. heal.

  1248. Earth has no sorrow

  1249. that heaven can't

  1250. heal.

  1251. That's what Jesus

  1252. is saying.

  1253. Earth has no sorrow

  1254. that heaven can't

  1255. heal.

  1256. And even to the

  1257. hairs of your head,

  1258. you matter to me.

  1259. Verse 19,

  1260. by your endurance,

  1261. you will gain your

  1262. lives.

  1263. It's a very,

  1264. very,

  1265. very powerful

  1266. thing.

  1267. Now,

  1268. now,

  1269. Jesus is going

  1270. to say something

  1271. which has

  1272. created,

  1273. has killed a lot

  1274. of trees.

  1275. If you go and

  1276. try to read some

  1277. academic commentaries

  1278. on Luke,

  1279. if you go read

  1280. some journal articles

  1281. on Luke,

  1282. you'll see that

  1283. there's been lots

  1284. of pages and

  1285. books written

  1286. to what about

  1287. Jesus is about

  1288. to say.

  1289. Because what

  1290. Jesus is about

  1291. to do is to

  1292. predict something

  1293. that took place

  1294. 33 years

  1295. after his

  1296. death.

  1297. And,

  1298. in fact,

  1299. one of the

  1300. reasons that

  1301. many people

  1302. will say that

  1303. the Gospel

  1304. of Luke

  1305. was written

  1306. in the late

  1307. 70s or the

  1308. early 80s

  1309. is because

  1310. the commentators

  1311. say we all

  1312. know that no

  1313. one knows

  1314. the future.

  1315. And,

  1316. because we

  1317. know that

  1318. no one

  1319. knows the

  1320. future,

  1321. therefore,

  1322. in this text

  1323. of Scripture,

  1324. when Jesus

  1325. describes the

  1326. destruction of

  1327. Jerusalem,

  1328. we know that

  1329. he can't have

  1330. done that.

  1331. So,

  1332. therefore,

  1333. it was added

  1334. by Christians

  1335. afterwards.

  1336. Now,

  1337. I'm not going

  1338. to try to,

  1339. there's a very,

  1340. very significant

  1341. piece of evidence

  1342. as to why

  1343. this is a

  1344. false claim.

  1345. In fact,

  1346. the words

  1347. of Jesus

  1348. have a very

  1349. peculiar and

  1350. powerful

  1351. historical proof

  1352. that he said

  1353. them before

  1354. and that it

  1355. was known

  1356. and that they

  1357. took it to

  1358. heart.

  1359. And,

  1360. well,

  1361. let's read it

  1362. and then I'll

  1363. tell you what

  1364. happened.

  1365. Verse 20,

  1366. but when you

  1367. see Jerusalem

  1368. surrounded by

  1369. armies,

  1370. then know that

  1371. its desolation

  1372. has come near.

  1373. Then let those

  1374. who are in

  1375. Judea flee to

  1376. the mountains

  1377. and let those

  1378. who are inside

  1379. the city

  1380. depart

  1381. and let

  1382. not those

  1383. who are out

  1384. in the country

  1385. enter it

  1386. for these

  1387. are days

  1388. of vengeance

  1389. to fulfill

  1390. all that is

  1391. written.

  1392. Alas for

  1393. women who

  1394. are pregnant

  1395. and for

  1396. those who

  1397. are nursing

  1398. infants in

  1399. those days

  1400. for there

  1401. will be

  1402. great distress

  1403. upon the

  1404. earth and

  1405. wrath.

  1406. God's wrath

  1407. against this

  1408. people.

  1409. They will

  1410. fall by the

  1411. edge of the

  1412. sword and

  1413. be led

  1414. captive among

  1415. all nations

  1416. and Jerusalem

  1417. will be

  1418. trampled

  1419. underfoot by

  1420. the Gentiles

  1421. until the

  1422. time of the

  1423. Gentiles

  1424. or the

  1425. pagans

  1426. are fulfilled.

  1427. In the

  1428. year 66

  1429. approximately

  1430. 33 years

  1431. after this

  1432. was written

  1433. the Jewish

  1434. revolt against

  1435. Rome began

  1436. and Rome

  1437. sent a

  1438. general

  1439. to deal

  1440. with it

  1441. and the

  1442. general

  1443. had a

  1444. partial

  1445. surrounding

  1446. of Jerusalem

  1447. and actually

  1448. entered

  1449. Jerusalem

  1450. but the

  1451. Jewish

  1452. forces

  1453. were able

  1454. to drive

  1455. him out

  1456. of the

  1457. city

  1458. and when

  1459. he left

  1460. the city

  1461. they were

  1462. able to

  1463. successfully

  1464. ambush

  1465. him

  1466. and basically

  1467. destroy

  1468. his army.

  1469. It was

  1470. profoundly

  1471. shocking

  1472. to Rome

  1473. at the

  1474. success

  1475. and the

  1476. power

  1477. of the

  1478. Jewish

  1479. armed

  1480. resistance

  1481. against

  1482. Roman

  1483. imperial

  1484. power.

  1485. So they

  1486. sent one

  1487. of their

  1488. most

  1489. competent

  1490. generals

  1491. Vespasian

  1492. to go

  1493. and to

  1494. deal with

  1495. these

  1496. troublesome

  1497. Jews

  1498. and so

  1499. Vespasian

  1500. organized a

  1501. variety of

  1502. armies,

  1503. Roman

  1504. legions

  1505. and first

  1506. he quelled

  1507. the uprising

  1508. in Galilee

  1509. and a few

  1510. other areas

  1511. and then

  1512. after he

  1513. quelled

  1514. the uprising

  1515. with great

  1516. success,

  1517. he was a

  1518. very competent

  1519. general,

  1520. he gathered

  1521. the legions

  1522. and surrounded

  1523. Jerusalem

  1524. and it

  1525. looked as

  1526. if Jerusalem's

  1527. doom was

  1528. near.

  1529. But then

  1530. the emperor

  1531. Nero

  1532. committed

  1533. suicide

  1534. in Rome

  1535. thousands

  1536. of miles

  1537. away.

  1538. committed

  1539. suicide

  1540. and then

  1541. thus began

  1542. what historians

  1543. now refer

  1544. to as the

  1545. year of

  1546. the four

  1547. emperors

  1548. because a

  1549. massive power

  1550. struggle

  1551. emerged in

  1552. Rome.

  1553. In the course

  1554. of approximately

  1555. 12 months

  1556. four different

  1557. people became

  1558. the emperor

  1559. of the Roman

  1560. Empire

  1561. and in the

  1562. midst of all

  1563. of that

  1564. turmoil

  1565. as Vespasian

  1566. has surrounded

  1567. Jerusalem with

  1568. armies to

  1569. destroy it.

  1570. He is called

  1571. back from

  1572. Jerusalem to

  1573. Rome to

  1574. deal with

  1575. it and he

  1576. goes and he

  1577. is successfully

  1578. able to deal

  1579. with the

  1580. political turmoil

  1581. and he

  1582. becomes the

  1583. emperor,

  1584. Vespasian.

  1585. And he

  1586. sends,

  1587. after he

  1588. has cemented

  1589. power in

  1590. Rome in

  1591. the year

  1592. 69,

  1593. he sends a

  1594. message to

  1595. his son who

  1596. is now the

  1597. general to

  1598. return to

  1599. the siege and

  1600. the destruction

  1601. of Jerusalem.

  1602. And in the

  1603. year 70,

  1604. in August,

  1605. Jerusalem

  1606. falls.

  1607. And as is

  1608. reported by

  1609. Josephus,

  1610. approximately

  1611. one million

  1612. Jewish people

  1613. die in that

  1614. Jewish revolt

  1615. and a hundred

  1616. thousand of

  1617. them are

  1618. carried away

  1619. as slaves

  1620. into captivity.

  1621. And here's

  1622. the thing

  1623. about this.

  1624. Historians

  1625. record that

  1626. when Vespasian

  1627. left and the

  1628. siege of

  1629. Jerusalem was

  1630. temporarily

  1631. lifted,

  1632. the Christian

  1633. church left.

  1634. Christians did

  1635. not die in

  1636. the sack and

  1637. destruction of

  1638. Jerusalem.

  1639. They relocated

  1640. far away.

  1641. Historical

  1642. record.

  1643. Don't you

  1644. think it is

  1645. reasonable to

  1646. say that they

  1647. remembered the

  1648. words of

  1649. Jesus, but

  1650. when you

  1651. see Jerusalem

  1652. surrounded by

  1653. armies, then

  1654. know that its

  1655. desolation has

  1656. come near.

  1657. Then let those

  1658. who are in

  1659. Judea flee to

  1660. the mountains and

  1661. let those who

  1662. are inside the

  1663. city depart, and

  1664. let not those

  1665. who are out in

  1666. the country

  1667. enter it.

  1668. Here's the

  1669. thing, folks,

  1670. and I've

  1671. turned it into a

  1672. prayer.

  1673. Dear God,

  1674. please help me to

  1675. remember that the

  1676. words of Jesus

  1677. have come true in

  1678. the past, and

  1679. please grow in

  1680. me a trusting

  1681. knowledge that his

  1682. words are true

  1683. today and every

  1684. day until the

  1685. end.

  1686. It's a prayer that

1687. many of us need to

  1688. pray, isn't it?

  1689. Dear God, please

  1690. help me to

  1691. remember that the

  1692. words of Jesus

  1693. have come true in

  1694. the past, and

1695. please grow in me a

  1696. trusting knowledge

  1697. that his words are

  1698. true today and

  1699. every day until

  1700. the end.

  1701. By the way, if

  1702. you don't have

  1703. time to write

  1704. these down, the

  1705. notes for the

  1706. sermon and the

  1707. audio of the

  1708. sermon go on the

  1709. webpage, hopefully

  1710. on Monday or

  1711. soon after that, if

  1712. these are helpful

1713. to you in terms of

  1714. forming your

  1715. prayer.

  1716. But some of you

  1717. might be saying,

  1718. George, that's all

  1719. very, very moving,

  1720. but you skipped

  1721. over the judgment

  1722. part.

  1723. Like, George, you

  1724. skipped over.

  1725. Surely you have to

  1726. talk about this.

  1727. George, surely,

  1728. okay, so

  1729. Jesus, you know,

  1730. he says this, he's

  1731. right, and you

  1732. know, you also

  1733. say that he

  1734. predicts his death

  1735. upon the cross and

  1736. his resurrection, and

  1737. you know, last week

  1738. you talked about the

  1739. historical evidence for

  1740. the reality of the

  1741. resurrection and the

  1742. meaning of the

  1743. resurrection, but

  1744. George, George,

  1745. George, George,

  1746. look at verse 20

  1747. again, but when you

  1748. see Jerusalem

  1749. surrounded by armies

  1750. and know that its

  1751. desolation has come

  1752. near, then let those

1753. who are in Judea flee

  1754. to the mountains and

  1755. let those who are

  1756. inside the city

  1757. depart and let not

1758. those who are out in

  1759. the country enter it,

1760. for these are days of

  1761. vengeance, also

  1762. could be translated

  1763. as judgment to

  1764. fulfill all that is

  1765. written, and then,

  1766. you know, alas for

  1767. women who are pregnant

1768. and for those who are

  1769. nursing infants in

  1770. those days, for there

  1771. will be great distress

  1772. upon the earth and

  1773. wrath, and it's the

  1774. wrath of God against

  1775. this people.

  1776. George, how can you,

1777. how, George, how can I

  1778. take this seriously?

1779. You know, one of the

  1780. dangers of messianic and

  1781. utopian movements is

  1782. that they always leave

  1783. lots of people dead.

  1784. Messianic movement in

  1785. Cambodia, Pol Pot, a

  1786. third of the population,

  1787. Soviet forced famines in

  1788. Ukraine, Maosy Tong's

  1789. Great Revolution.

1790. Even today, I'm going to be

1791. a bad boy, but, you know,

  1792. as our society becomes

  1793. more post-Christian, and

  1794. whatever that's going to

1795. be like, it's no, people

  1796. probably don't even think

  1797. of it as post-Christian

  1798. now because it's post-

  1799. post-Christian, and now we

1800. want to give doctors the

1801. power to kill the weak, and

  1802. we're already killing the

1803. babies in the womb, and

  1804. when you have utopian

  1805. movements and visions,

1806. people die, and even when we

1807. talk about climate change, I'm

1808. not going to enter into

  1809. whether or not I, a few

1810. weeks ago, I talked about

1811. this as an example, and I

  1812. didn't say that it was a

1813. fact, and I got a very nice

1814. email rebuking me for not

1815. saying that it was a fact.

  1816. You know, I think if it's

1817. science, it's always open for

1818. debate, but, you know, it's

  1819. either some type of

  1820. historical inevitability that

1821. leads people to die, or

1822. because the end justifies the

1823. means, it means that some

1824. people have to die, and on

1825. one hand, it can just sound as

1826. if we're not aware of the

  1827. cruelties often of the

  1828. messianic movements and

1829. utopias that we believe this

1830. moment, it's easier for us to

1831. see the cruelties of the ones

1832. that are in the past, although

1833. even then, now, as you know,

1834. with the controversy around the

1835. memorial to the victims of

  1836. communism, there are still

1837. people who don't want to

1838. acknowledge that they backed a

  1839. completely evil social system

1840. with all of their power for

1841. decades, and they don't want to

1842. acknowledge that, but it's easy

1843. if you go far enough back that

1844. you can see it in the past, you

1845. can't see it in the present, but

1846. people die, and there's no

1847. mercy, and here's the thing for

1848. us as we listen to this text,

1849. as we listen to this text, it's a

  1850. very, very un-Canadian idea, I'm

1851. not going to be able to sell it

1852. to you, all I'm going to be able

1853. to say is this, that the Bible

1854. says that we are rebels against

1855. God, and that every single human

1856. being will be judged, that that is

  1857. completely and utterly

1858. inevitable, but this is not just

1859. another messianic thing where it's

1860. just going to be, it sucks to be

1861. you, and you're all going to die,

1862. and you're just all under the

1863. judgment of God, that as Jesus is

1864. saying this, he is saying this,

1865. the day before he does the,

1866. introduces the Lord's Supper, and

1867. that night he'll be betrayed, and

1868. the next day he will hang upon the

1869. cross, and the great promise of the

1870. scriptures is that God gives every

  1871. human being a choice, that's why

1872. there are evangelists, this is why

1873. there are missionaries who go to

1874. even unreached peoples, and the

1875. choice that God gives to us is the

1876. judgment of God must surely fall, and

1877. the choice before us is whether it

1878. falls on me, or whether it falls on

1879. Jesus in my stead, and in my place, that

1880. is the human choice, we Canadians filled

1881. with pride think that it is a terrible

1882. thing that everybody is not in heaven,

1883. and it breaks God's heart that not

1884. everybody will be in heaven, but we

1885. should view it that even having one

1886. person in heaven is a miracle of God

1887. that required the death of God, the Son of

1888. God, upon the cross, to bear the

1889. desolation and the judgment that you and

  1890. I deserve.

1891. If you could put it up, Andrew, I've

1892. turned it into a prayer.

1893. Dear God, I thank you that by your

1894. grace, the judgment that I deserved

1895. fell on Jesus, and that you bestowed on

1896. me the life that he deserved.

1897. Please grow in me a grateful, humble,

1898. trusting knowing of what Jesus did for

  1899. me.

1900. Dear God, I thank you that by your

1901. grace, the judgment that I deserved

1902. fell on Jesus, and that you bestowed on

1903. me the life that he shared, that he

  1904. deserved.

1905. Please grow in me a grateful, humble,

1906. trusting knowing of what Jesus did for

  1907. me.

1908. That's the context to understand this.

  1909. I mean, there's other issues, but that's

1910. no Christian can understand the whole

1911. issue of judgment without first thinking

  1912. about the cross.

1913. And, you know, this is a profound, if any

1914. of you are here and you have this sense of

1915. doom about your life, if any of you are

1916. here struggling with shame, that there is

1917. something that's not just that you've done

1918. wrong things, but that there's something

1919. fundamentally wrong for you, if you are

1920. here thinking that fundamentally bad things

1921. are going to happen to you, that good

1922. things will never happen to you, if doom

1923. characterizes your life, the story of the

1924. gospel is the doom that you deserved fell on

1925. Jesus, and the life that he deserved is

  1926. offered to you today.

1927. All because Jesus loves you.

1928. We have to wrap this up.

1929. And some of you might be saying, George, you

1930. haven't even started to talk about the

1931. second coming of Jesus yet.

1932. But, by the way, one of the things that I do

1933. here, you know, it would be a very different

1934. sermon if I took Matthew and Mark and Luke

1935. and tried to show how they were all similar and

1936. how they were all different.

1937. In our Going Deeper this week, I just, those

1938. of you who do Going Deeper, which is in the

1939. bulletin, I give you the three parallel

1940. texts, and you can look at them and talk

1941. about the similarities and differences in

  1942. the same text.

1943. We're just camping in Luke.

1944. One of the things to understand about the

1945. destruction of Jerusalem, and especially

1946. comes if you look at Matthew's account of

1947. it, is that in some ways, it's almost as if

1948. what happens in Jerusalem is maybe like a

1949. bit of a prototype or a bit of a precursor

1950. of what the end might be, that in some ways,

1951. Jerusalem will probably be involved in

  1952. whatever the end is.

1953. And even here in Jesus' teaching, he basically

1954. implies that Israel will come back together

1955. again, that there will be a Jewish nation and

  1956. Jewish people.

1957. But Jesus goes and moves very, very quickly

1958. into now into the fact that literally,

1959. literally, and I mean literally the way people

1960. used to mean literally as meaning not sort of

1961. like vaguely like, but I actually like

  1962. literally, literally, literally.

1963. It's really hard because there used to be a

1964. word called literally that meant something

1965. and now literally doesn't mean what it

1966. literally used to mean for all people.

1967. And so somebody needs to reinvent a word

1968. that now means what literally used to mean

  1969. like 10 years ago.

1970. But I mean like actual, okay?

1971. Jesus actually says that he will return and

1972. he uses the title, he uses constantly throughout

1973. the Gospel of Luke, the title of the Son of Man.

1974. In fact, just before we read it, if you could put

1975. up the next point, Andrew, as the prayer to sort

1976. of remind us of this.

1977. Dear God, please grow in me an ever-deepening

1978. confidence and longing for the return of Jesus

  1979. Messiah.

1980. Dear God, please grow in me an ever-deepening

1981. confidence and longing for the return of Jesus

  1982. Messiah.

1983. This is the flip side of what I said earlier about

1984. students and academics and over-educated people

1985. like myself that not only do we have to rid our minds

1986. of messianic and utopian visions and movements,

1987. but we have to grasp and be gripped by the real

  1988. return of Jesus.

1989. And here's what he says in verse 25.

1990. And there will be signs and sun and moon and stars and

1991. on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of

1992. the roaring of the sea and the waves.

1993. People fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is

1994. coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be

  1995. shaken.

1996. This, verses 25 and 26, are up until now it's been

  1997. non-signs.

  1998. These are signs.

  1999. And then verse 27.

2000. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with

  2001. power and great glory.

2002. Now when these things begin to take place,

2003. straighten up, raise your heads because your redemption,

2004. your glorification is drawing near.

2005. One of the things that divides Christians is whether you're

  2006. post-millennial, pre-millennial, amillennial.

  2007. And if you're pre-millennial, are you pre-millennial

  2008. dispensationalist or historic pre-millennial?

  2009. And if you're pre-millennial, are you pre-trib,

  2010. mid-trib, or post-trib?

2011. And those actually divide churches and Christians.

2012. And what I'd like to suggest is that we have to act,

2013. you know, everybody, if you haven't read it, you should go

2014. and read the C.S. Lewis Narnia Chronicle book called

2015. The Silver Chair, which has Puddleglum the Marsh Wiggle.

2016. And in The Silver Chair, Aslan gives these two kids a task,

2017. which is that they have to go and rescue the crown prince of

2018. Narnia from The Wicked Witch.

2019. And he said, I'm going to give you some help,

2020. which is this Puddleglum the Marsh Wiggle.

2021. And he gives them, I think it's four signs.

2022. And he gives them these four signs that they are to seek and follow.

2023. And if they follow them, they'll find the prince

  2024. and they'll be successful.

2025. And he tells them what they are.

2026. He has them memorize them.

2027. And he says, yes, they have to memorize them every day.

2028. And of course, part of the dynamic of the book is they squabble,

2029. they fight, they, you know, they do all these things.

2030. They forget the signs and they remember the signs.

2031. But every one of the signs, eventually they come to,

2032. they eventually recognize the sign and it does leave them to the prince.

2033. And I won't tell you anything more in case it spoils the end of the book.

  2034. But here's the thing.

2035. We spend way too much time learning theories about the second coming of Jesus

2036. when we should just really probably try to remember the signs of the second coming of Jesus.

2037. In fact, it would probably be a point of unity amongst Christians

2038. if we said, well, okay, you can be premillennial, pre-trib, you know, blah, blah, blah.

2039. And you can be amillennial, you can be this.

2040. Let's just all memorize the signs.

2041. Because it could be that we're so busy arguing about the theory

2042. that we forget what the signs are and miss the end,

2043. which would be deeply, deeply, deeply ironic.

2044. And we'll probably make God chuckle

2045. and just at how foolish us biped human beings are.

  2046. Here's the thing.

  2047. Andrew, the next point.

2048. Dear God, please help me to remember the signs and the non-signs

2049. of the return of Jesus Messiah.

2050. Dear God, please help me to remember the signs and the non-signs

2051. of the return of Jesus Messiah.

2052. Look at them again for verse 25 and 26.

2053. And I want to say something here.

2054. So people like me stand up on stages like this,

2055. but usually when they do it, there's like 4,000 or 5,000 people

2056. and there's a television show and all of that.

  2057. None of that.

  2058. We don't have that.

2059. But usually what they'll do is they'll tell you when they say,

2060. and there will be signs and sun and moon and stars

2061. and on the earth distress of nations and perplexity

2062. because of the roaring of the sea and the waves,

2063. people fainting with fear and with foreboding

2064. of what is coming on the world,

2065. for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

2066. And then they'll tell you exactly what that means and looks like.

  2067. Okay?

2068. I'm going to get in trouble, but I'm going to say it.

2069. I won't get in trouble with you guys

2070. because, you know, you come here

2071. and most of you are more or less like me.

  2072. Here's the thing.

2073. Anybody who tells you that they know what these things are

2074. and what are liberal and sort of what are literal

  2075. and what are symbolic,

  2076. they don't know.

  2077. They can't know.

  2078. They can never know.

2079. When it happens, then we'll say,

2080. oh, I guess that was literal.

2081. I guess that was symbolic.

2082. Until it happens, you won't know what's literal

  2083. and what's symbolic.

  2084. You just won't.

  2085. You can't.

2086. So just remember the signs.

  2087. Just remember the signs.

2088. I guess I think just with the time,

2089. let's just read the text

2090. and then I'll just wrap it all up.

2091. Remember I said to you a little bit earlier

  2092. about the,

2093. this actually doesn't lead us to inaction,

  2094. but to action.

  2095. And let's look at verse 29.

2096. And he told them a parable.

2097. Look at the fig tree and all the trees.

2098. As soon as they come out in leaf,

2099. you see for yourselves and know that summer is already near.

2100. So also when you see these things taking place,

2101. you know that the kingdom of God is near.

2102. Truly I say to you,

2103. this generation will not pass away

2104. until all has taken place.

2105. Heaven and earth will pass away,

2106. but my words will not pass away.

2107. And just sort of pause.

  2108. Generation probably means that

2109. the end will come suddenly

2110. and the people who begin to see the signs

2111. will be there to see the end of the whole thing.

  2112. It could also mean,

2113. because of some odd oddities in the Greek language,

2114. it could mean that the Jewish people

  2115. will always survive

2116. until the second coming of Jesus.

2117. But the important thing here,

2118. it's the memory verse for the week,

2119. is heaven and earth will pass away,

2120. but my words will not pass away.

  2121. It's the Christian basis

2122. for us understanding the New Testament

2123. that it needed to be written.

2124. That Jesus says that his words and teaching

  2125. will not pass away.

2126. And what we have in the New Testament

2127. is the words of Jesus

2128. and the teaching of Jesus

2129. recorded for us to read.

2130. Andrew, if you could put up the sixth point.

  2131. Dear God,

2132. please help me to read the Bible

2133. knowing that heaven and earth will pass away,

2134. but that the words and teaching of Jesus

  2135. will not pass away.

  2136. Dear God,

2137. please help me to read the Bible

2138. knowing that heaven and earth will pass away,

2139. but that the words and teaching of Jesus

  2140. will not pass away.

  2141. You know,

2142. the reason I accept this as being true

2143. is because I believe that Jesus

2144. really did rise from the dead.

2145. That it vindicates and justifies

  2146. what he taught.

  2147. That he's my savior.

  2148. And that therefore,

2149. when I read all of the Bible,

2150. I read all of the Bible

2151. mindful that heaven and earth will pass away,

2152. but the words of Jesus

  2153. will not pass away.

2154. And that's to be the filter

  2155. of how I understand,

  2156. why I understand

2157. that the Bible is important.

2158. I need to get it into my mind,

  2159. into my heart,

  2160. and into my will,

  2161. and into my heart,

  2162. into my soul.

2163. I need to get it into me.

2164. I need to have it for me.

2165. I need to trust it.

2166. I need to build my life upon it.

2167. I need to preach it.

2168. I need to teach it.

2169. I need to bear witness to it.

2170. Because the one who died for me,

  2171. who bore my judgment,

2172. and defeated sin and death and hell

2173. and all hostile spiritual powers,

2174. he truly rose from the dead.

  2175. And one final prayer.

2176. Andrew, if you could put it up,

2177. this will be our closing prayer.

  2178. Dear God,

2179. please make me a disciple of Jesus

  2180. gripped by the gospel,

2181. who daily rises from prayer

2182. to stand straight with head held high,

2183. to bear witness to you,

  2184. and to do good,

  2185. all for your glory.

  2186. When those of us

2187. were going into the lawyers' meetings

  2188. because of the lawsuit

2189. that was made against the church,

  2190. you know,

  2191. that's what we'd sort of do.

2192. We wouldn't sort of go in like this.

2193. You'd realize that the way you go in

  2194. is you stand straight,

  2195. head held high,

  2196. and you go in.

  2197. And while the world

  2198. has been overcome

2199. with the fear of all of these things,

2200. and while we go from one utopia

  2201. to another,

  2202. all of which fail,

2203. the Bible here is saying

2204. that we get on our knees in prayer,

2205. we think about the words of Jesus,

  2206. then we stand straight

2207. with our heads held high,

2208. and we go out to do good.

  2209. See, the thing is,

  2210. the Bible tells us

2211. that poverty will never be eradicated,

2212. but it also tells us

2213. that we have a constant obligation

  2214. for the poor.

  2215. The Bible tells us

2216. that there will never be a time

  2217. of universal prosperity,

2218. but the Bible tells us

2219. that we are to pray

  2220. for the prosperity

2221. and work for the prosperity

2222. and the blessing of this city

  2223. and of this nation.

  2224. And so,

2225. we are to go ahead

2226. and we are to do that.

2227. We are to do that confident

2228. that God is sovereign over history,

  2229. that Jesus,

2230. who is the same one

2231. who died upon the cross

  2232. and rose again,

  2233. is the same one

  2234. who will return,

2235. that our labor is not in vain,

2236. that we do not have to try

  2237. to wait to help

  2238. a particular poor person

  2239. until we figure out

  2240. how to eradicate

  2241. all of poverty,

2242. that we are to care

2243. for the poor in this city,

2244. that we are to pray

  2245. for the prosperity

  2246. of this city,

  2247. that if you're a young man

  2248. or a young woman

  2249. or an old man

  2250. or an old woman

2251. and you have an entrepreneurial bend,

  2252. start that business.

  2253. Hire people.

2254. That we are to be aware

  2255. of the poor

  2256. in our neighborhood

2257. and we are to try

  2258. to feed them

2259. and we are to try

  2260. to go out

2261. and do what we can

  2262. to help them.

2263. And if you're in politics,

  2264. well then you can't

  2265. just think in terms

  2266. of politics

  2267. in terms of powerful

  2268. interest groups,

2269. but you have to be aware

  2270. of how the economy

  2271. affects the poor

2272. and you have to be aware

  2273. of how to work

  2274. an economy and pray

2275. to try to figure out

2276. how to work the economy.

2277. Use the best of your mind

  2278. so that it leads

  2279. to prosperity

  2280. for our nation

  2281. and prosperity

  2282. for our city.

  2283. That these texts,

2284. they give us a ground

  2285. for hope.

  2286. And so we believe

  2287. the words of Jesus

  2288. that poverty

  2289. will never be eradicated,

  2290. but we also believe

  2291. the words of Jesus

2292. that we are to care

  2293. for the poor.

  2294. We're to believe

  2295. the Bible

2296. that there will not be,

  2297. that Star Trek

  2298. is false.

  2299. But then we're also

  2300. to believe the Bible

2301. and to pray and work

  2302. for the prosperity

  2303. of the city.

2304. We get on our knees

  2305. and pray.

  2306. We think and read

  2307. God's word.

  2308. We trust the words

  2309. of Jesus

  2310. and then we stand

  2311. up straight

  2312. with our head

  2313. held high

  2314. and we do good

  2315. and bear witness

  2316. all for the glory

  2317. of God.

  2318. Please stand.

  2319. You've been very patient.

  2320. I went a little bit

  2321. longer than usual

2322. and I had to skip over

  2323. some of the passage,

  2324. but you know,

2325. this is such a glorious,

  2326. glorious,

  2327. glorious hope

  2328. hope.

2329. And it's just so like God

  2330. that he would even

  2331. place into this thing

  2332. which gives harbingers

  2333. of the end

  2334. the fact that

  2335. Jesus' words

  2336. were even fulfilled

  2337. in Jerusalem

  2338. and Judea

  2339. in the late 60s,

  2340. within 30,

  2341. 35 years

  2342. of the death

  2343. and resurrection,

  2344. of Jesus speaking

  2345. these words.

2346. So my prayer for you

  2347. is that you'll have

  2348. a deep confidence

  2349. in Jesus

  2350. and a deep confidence

  2351. in his word.

2352. And that if you do not

  2353. yet know Jesus,

  2354. if you haven't given

  2355. your life to Jesus,

2356. that you just call out

  2357. with your heart

  2358. and say,

  2359. Jesus,

  2360. thank you that you

  2361. died upon the cross

  2362. for me.

  2363. Thank you that you

  2364. took my place.

  2365. Thank you that bestow

  2366. upon me life.

  2367. Jesus,

  2368. be in my life.

2369. I want to be in your life.

  2370. Be my savior.

2371. I want to follow you

  2372. as Lord.

  2373. There's no better time

  2374. than today to say

  2375. such a prayer.

2376. And for all of us,

  2377. those who've taken

  2378. that step,

  2379. then just pray

2380. the mission of the church

  2381. over ourselves.

  2382. Father,

  2383. make me a disciple

  2384. of Jesus

  2385. gripped by the gospel

2386. who lives for your glory.

  2387. That's a prayer

  2388. we can pray

  2389. for ourselves

2390. every day of our lives.

  2391. Let's brow

  2392. our heads in prayer.

  2393. Father,

2394. pour out your Holy Spirit

  2395. upon us.

  2396. Cleanse us

  2397. and cause us

  2398. to reject

  2399. all false messiahs

  2400. and utopias

  2401. and all messianic

  2402. and utopian visions.

  2403. Father,

  2404. help us

  2405. to put those things

  2406. to death in us.

  2407. And Father,

  2408. at the same time,

2409. we ask that you help us

  2410. to be gripped

  2411. by what Jesus did

2412. for us on the cross.

2413. Be gripped by the fact

2414. that his word is true

2415. and that it will never fail,

  2416. that we can build

  2417. our lives around it

  2418. and upon it.

  2419. And Father,

2420. grip us with the promise

  2421. of his return.

  2422. Grip us,

  2423. Father,

  2424. with this.

  2425. May this,

  2426. Father,

  2427. be our blessed hope.

  2428. Fan into flame

  2429. within us

  2430. an ever deeper longing

  2431. and yearning

2432. for the return of Jesus.

  2433. Fan into flame

  2434. within us

  2435. an ever deeper longing

  2436. and yearning

  2437. to be with him,

  2438. to see his face,

2439. to have him see us.

  2440. Father,

  2441. make us disciples

  2442. of Jesus

  2443. gripped by the gospel

2444. who live day by day

  2445. to do good

2446. and to bring you glory,

  2447. all to your glory,

  2448. bearing witness to you,

  2449. all to your glory.

  2450. Father,

  2451. make us such disciples.

  2452. And this we ask

  2453. in Jesus' name.

  2454. Amen.
