  1. for your steadfast love and for your faithfulness.

  2. God, thank you that you who breathed life into our lungs

  3. and who created the universe,

  4. that you are here in the room with us today.

  5. And though we cannot see you this morning,

  6. we long to see your face.

  7. So Lord, would you illuminate your word for us?

  8. Would you speak through me, your servant,

  9. to all of us, including me,

  10. that each one of us, including myself,

  11. would grow in our vision of who you are,

  12. our awe of you, our love of you,

  13. even our fear of you,

  14. our joy that is found in you,

  15. that we might come to know you more deeply,

  16. more intimately, and more completely.

  17. In Jesus' name, amen.

  18. Please be seated.

  19. I grew up on the west coast of Canada in Vancouver,

  20. British Columbia,

  21. with so many stories of my grandpa, Grandpa Sam.

  22. Grandpa Sam, we were told by my dad,

  23. was a bodybuilder extraordinaire.

  24. The feats that he would do as a young man,

  25. and you wouldn't believe me if I told you them,

  26. but I believe that they're true.

  27. He also was a classical musician,

  28. and a jazz saxophone artist,

  29. and he was quite a renaissance man.

  30. He painted oil canvas paintings,

  31. and just did so much,

  32. and generated so many stories.

  33. He had a personality larger than life,

  34. and a temper that could flare up,

  35. and so there was endless,

  36. hilarious stories to us young Gilmans in my family.

  37. My dad would take care of us on Tuesday nights

  38. as my mom would go Israeli folk dancing,

  39. and so we'd often ask my dad

  40. for more Grandpa Sam stories.

  41. By the time I was a young teen,

  42. I knew so much about my Grandpa Sam,

  43. but I had never met him,

  44. because we lived in Vancouver,

  45. and he lived in Montreal.

  46. I come from a very plentiful family,

  47. so to fly out to Montreal was always something

  48. that was just too costly for us.

  49. But then when I was 13,

  50. my family took that trip and went to Montreal.

  51. We were on a way to Israel,

  52. but we'd stopped in Montreal,

  53. and so we got to spend the afternoon

  54. with Grandpa, Grandpa Sam.

  55. And that afternoon,

  56. just a few hours with Grandpa Sam

  57. were so precious to us.

  58. We'd heard so much about him,

  59. we knew so much about him,

  60. but finally we got to know him.

  61. That afternoon,

  62. we didn't get any more stories about Grandpa Sam,

  63. and any of the stories he told us

  64. we'd already heard before,

  65. but there was something so precious and tender

  66. about getting to spend time

  67. in real life with Grandpa Sam.

  68. Just a few weeks later,

  69. Grandpa Sam passed away.

  70. And as we grieved,

  71. as we missed him,

  72. we also were comforted by the fact

  73. that we got to actually know Grandpa Sam.

  74. If he had died just a few weeks earlier,

  75. and we had never met him,

  76. we could have only ever said

  77. we knew a lot about Grandpa Sam.

  78. We couldn't have said we actually knew him.

  79. But there was something so precious

  80. about those few hours.

  81. And what is it about knowing,

  82. the difference between knowing about someone,

  83. knowing them,

  84. what is so precious about those few hours

  85. we got to spend with Grandpa Sam,

  86. even if we didn't gain any more information about him?

  87. It's because each one of us understands

  88. instinctively that there's something

  89. so much more real and intimate and precious

  90. having met someone,

  91. encountered them,

  92. to be able to say you know them,

  93. rather than that you just know about them.

  94. And I share the story with you this morning,

  95. not because I think that you particularly care

  96. about my personal life

  97. or my relatives or anything like that,

  98. but to illustrate for you,

  99. for all of us,

  100. that we all understand

  101. that there's this distinction

  102. between knowing about someone

  103. and knowing someone.

  104. And this isn't only important

  105. when it comes to the relationships

  106. we have with our friends or our relatives,

  107. but even more importantly

  108. when it comes to actually knowing God.

  109. If you're in church this morning,

  110. I am assuming that you know something about God,

  111. that you know something about Jesus.

  112. But it is of insurmountable importance

  113. that we don't just know about God,

  114. but that we actually know him.

  115. So if you turn in your Bibles

  116. to Philippians chapter 3, verse 10,

    Philippians 3:10

  117. that is what we'll be looking at this morning.

  118. And if you can all join me in reading this,

  119. half sentence, that would be great.

  120. Verse 10, Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  121. Believe the words are on the screen.

  122. Say it aloud with me.

  123. That I may know him

  124. and the power of his resurrection

  125. and may share his sufferings

  126. becoming like him in his death.

  127. That I may know him.

  128. Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 7

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  129. tells a story of how at the end of time

  130. many will come before him

  131. and many will say,

  132. Lord, Lord,

  133. and then recount all these things

  134. that they did in Jesus' name.

  135. These are people who clearly

  136. believe that Jesus is Lord

  137. and they're people who've done

  138. great ministry and service

  139. in the church and in society.

  140. And Jesus' response,

  141. devastatingly so to them,

  142. will be,

  143. get away, depart from me.

  144. I never knew you.

  145. It's of insurmountable importance

  146. that we don't just know about Jesus.

  147. Those people know a lot about Jesus,

  148. but they don't know him.

  149. Why is this so important for us today,

  150. specifically in the 21st century?

  151. Well, throughout the history of the church,

  152. throughout the past 2,000 years,

  153. there has always been

  154. these various heresies,

  155. this wrong thinking about God and life

  156. that creep into the church.

  157. And it seems like there's

  158. different wrong theologies,

  159. different heresies

  160. that will creep in in different periods.

  161. In the past 100 years,

  162. one of the main heresies

  163. that have crept into good churches

  164. in North America

  165. is one that I can illustrate for you best

  166. as told by a pastor and author,

  167. David Platt.

  168. He shares how it is very normal

  169. for someone today,

  170. say you have a young man,

  171. let's just call him Kyle,

  172. and he comes up to a pastor,

  173. we'll call him Pastor David,

  174. comes up to Pastor David

  175. and he says,

  176. you know,

  177. I'm not a church guy,

  178. I haven't grown up in the church,

  179. but I have this fear

  180. of dying and going to hell.

  181. And I don't want that.

  182. What should I do?

  183. And the pastor,

  184. Pastor David,

  185. would say something like,

  186. well,

  187. would you close your eyes

  188. and repeat after me?

  189. So Kyle closes his eyes

  190. by kind of peering through his eyes

  191. a little bit

  192. so he can see what the pastor is doing.

  193. And the pastor would say something like,

  194. dear Jesus.

  195. So Kyle looks around,

  196. keeps his eyes closed

  197. and says,

  198. dear Jesus.

  199. The pastor says something like,

  200. I know that I'm a sinner.

  201. So Kyle says,

  202. I know that I'm a sinner.

  203. And he leads him in the sinner's prayer

  204. asking Jesus to be his Savior

  205. and his Lord.

  206. And then Kyle looks up

  207. after saying amen

  208. and the pastor would look at him

  209. and say,

  210. Kyle,

  211. you're born again.

  212. You don't need to fear hell anymore.

  213. And that's a very common,

  214. a common phenomenon

  215. in the past hundred years

  216. in North America.

  217. And to some extent,

  218. even though we might not say

  219. that that is the fullness

  220. of what it means to be a Christian,

  221. a lot of us have encountered that

  222. in our own lives.

  223. But in the Gospel of Matthew,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  224. chapter 7,

  225. Jesus is very clear

  226. that we need to not just be people

  227. who have said a prayer

  228. or know about Jesus,

  229. but we actually need to come

  230. to know him.

  231. There's so much more

  232. than just saying a prayer.

  233. As David Platt says,

  234. the Gospel is not an invitation

  235. to say a prayer.

  236. It's a summons to lay down our life.

  237. The Gospel isn't an invitation

  238. to just say a prayer.

  239. If that's what it is,

  240. then Christianity is simply

  241. like some type of superstition

  242. where basically the sinner's prayer

  243. is an incantation that you say

  244. that lets you in the club.

  245. But it's not like that.

  246. No, instead,

  247. instead it's more like how

  248. every one of us is born.

  249. We come into the world

  250. with a throne in our hearts.

  251. And who sits on that throne

  252. is who's in charge of your life.

  253. Who is the one that

  254. you're living your life

  255. in deference to

  256. and in awe of

  257. and making your decisions

  258. based upon.

  259. And every one of us

  260. is born with ourselves

  261. as the king on the throne

  262. of our hearts.

  263. We're the one,

  264. even as little kids.

  265. When we don't get away,

  266. we're just crying

  267. and we're screaming

  268. and we're being quite brutish.

  269. And so many of us

  270. become more polite

  271. as we grow up,

  272. but we're still making decisions

  273. based on the same grid.

  274. But for us to actually

  275. come to know God

  276. is when we say,

  277. we come to God

  278. and we say,

  279. both with our prayers

  280. as with our life,

  281. God,

  282. would you please save me

  283. for myself?

  284. I don't want to be the king

  285. of my life anymore.

  286. I don't want to be the one

  287. in charge.

  288. Would you save me

  289. for myself?

  290. Would you forgive me

  291. for my sin?

  292. And would you be

  293. the king of my life?

  294. And it's not just something

  295. we say with words.

  296. It's something that we're

  297. looking to God

  298. with our life.

  299. Another way to illustrate

  300. this for you

  301. is found in a true story

  302. in the Gospel of Luke

  303. in chapter 13

  304. where you have a woman

  305. who is,

  306. she has a crippling spirit

  307. which means she's bent

  308. over like this

  309. and she's been like that

  310. for 18 years.

  311. She's been like that

  312. for 18 years

  313. and so that means

  314. for 18 years

  315. she hasn't seen the faces

  316. of any of her friends

  317. or family.

  318. She hasn't seen the sun.

  319. She hasn't seen any of that.

  320. She's bound like this.

  321. And when I think

  322. of this woman,

  323. it reminds me

  324. of a girl that came up

  325. to me at church

  326. on Wednesday,

  327. a service that

  328. Church of Messiah does

  329. along with a few

  330. other churches

  331. at the University of Ottawa.

  332. One evening

  333. after preaching,

  334. this girl came up

  335. to me and said,

  336. Daniel,

  337. I heard you talking

  338. about the Gospel

  339. and about our need

  340. for Jesus,

  341. but I know you're right,

  342. but for the past

  343. six months

  344. I've been running

  345. from God,

  346. I've been running

  347. from church

  348. and I'm afraid

  349. that if I surrender

  350. my life to God again

  351. that He's going to

  352. ruin my freedom

  353. and my fun.

  354. And as she spoke to me,

  355. I saw the tension

  356. in her face.

  357. You've ever seen

  358. someone's face

  359. where the skin

  360. on their face

  361. is so taut,

  362. like it's so tight,

  363. you can see

  364. that they're stressed.

  365. I talked to her

  366. about the past six months

  367. and I heard that

  368. even though she's been

  369. living a wild

  370. and crazy life

  371. that she really thinks

  372. is freedom and fun

  373. that she really

  374. is so miserable.

  375. There's such chaos

  376. in her life

  377. and she doesn't

  378. really have freedom

  379. and fun.

  380. And she's like

  381. this woman who,

  382. this woman,

  383. she's bent down

  384. like this for 18 years

  385. and all this woman

  386. can see is her own legs,

  387. her own body.

  388. That's all she can see.

  389. And I spent some time

  390. this past year

  391. when I was preparing

  392. for a message

  393. for Church on Wednesday,

  394. I spent some time

  395. in the self-help section

  396. of chapters

  397. reading through

  398. some of the books,

  399. actually a number

  400. of the books,

  401. some more intimately

  402. than others.

  403. And all these self-help books

  404. that are so popular today,

  405. it's a big section

  406. of chapters indicating

  407. a lot of people

  408. read those books.

  409. And all these books,

  410. and you can go online

  411. and watch all these

  412. TED Talks as well

  413. about how to do the same,

  414. it's all about gaining

  415. control and mastery

  416. of your own life.

  417. It's about getting in touch

  418. with your deep

  419. and natural desires

  420. and learning how

  421. to get those things,

  422. your dreams

  423. and your goals

  424. for yourself.

  425. In other words,

  426. it's doing the same

  427. that this girl

  428. at Church on Wednesday

  429. was saying she's been

  430. trying to do

  431. for six months,

  432. trying to make yourself

  433. the king of your life,

  434. trying to put yourself

  435. on the throne

  436. of your own heart.

  437. But trying to get

  438. obsessing over the

  439. learning to get in touch

  440. with your own desires

  441. and how to gain control

  442. of your life

  443. is really just being

  444. like this woman

  445. that all you can see

  446. is yourself.

  447. And you might imagine

  448. that would be freedom,

  449. you might imagine

  450. that would be fun,

  451. but really it's binding

  452. and it's crippling.

  453. And even the pleasures

  454. that you're able to get

  455. for yourself,

  456. there's such uncertainty

  457. as to whether or not

  458. you can keep those things

  459. for yourself,

  460. and so no matter

  461. how much riches

  462. and wealth you can get,

  463. you're still miserable.

  464. I've seen this when

  465. I've been working

  466. at Parliament Hill

  467. for the past seven years

  468. and I've had the privilege

  469. of having a few garden parties

  470. at the Prime Minister's house.

  471. I've gotten to meet

  472. not only the Prime Minister

  473. but other Cabinet Ministers,

  474. these Canadians

  475. who are some of the

  476. most powerful,

  477. most prestigious,

  478. in some cases,

  479. the most rich Canadians.

  480. They have so many

  481. of the things

  482. that you and I

  483. would only ever dream of,

  484. the popularity,

  485. the riches,

  486. wealth,

  487. the comfort,

  488. the pleasures.

  489. In addition to all of that

  490. at Parliament Hill,

  491. there's receptions

  492. everywhere you go.

  493. So it's pretty much

  494. unlimited alcohol

  495. and delicious food.

  496. These people have so many,

  497. have all the things

  498. that this young woman

  499. at church on Wednesday

  500. was dreaming about

  501. getting for herself.

  502. Yeah,

  503. as I have had conversations

  504. with these powerful people,

  505. I see in the eyes

  506. of so many

  507. such misery,

  508. such uncertainty.

  509. They're not happy people.

  510. They're not happy.

  511. They certainly don't have joy.

  512. They are just like this woman,

  513. bent like this

  514. for 18 years.

  515. But then after 18 years

  516. like that,

  517. this woman hears

  518. of Jesus.

  519. She hears these stories

  520. about him.

  521. And she thinks,

  522. I don't just want to know

  523. about Jesus,

  524. I want to encounter Jesus.

  525. I want him to heal me

  526. and to free me.

  527. And so she comes to Jesus

  528. and she cries out to him.

  529. And Jesus heals her.

  530. And for the first time

  531. in 18 years,

  532. this woman goes from

  533. being bent down like this

  534. where all she can see

  535. is herself.

  536. And she stands up.

  537. And for the first time

  538. in 18 years,

  539. she sees the faces

  540. of people around her.

  541. She sees the heaven,

  542. and she sees the sky.

  543. And she sees Jesus

  544. face to face.

  545. She encounters God

  546. and she worships God.

  547. She's heard about Jesus.

  548. She knows about Jesus.

  549. But now she knows Jesus.

  550. And in that,

  551. she's found her healing

  552. and her freedom.

  553. And that is the same

  554. for you and for me.

  555. The scriptures teach us

  556. that every single one of us,

  557. until we come to know God,

  558. even if we know a lot about him,

  559. until we come to know God,

  560. we're like this woman.

  561. And we're spiritually dead.

  562. We're like zombies.

  563. We might be awake.

  564. We might be going around

  565. doing stuff.

  566. But until we come to know God,

  567. it's like we're spiritually dead.

  568. But as God takes his rightful places

  569. on the throne of our hearts,

  570. as we surrender to him,

  571. both through prayer

  572. as well as through our lives,

  573. coming to know God,

  574. we encounter him.

  575. And so my passion

  576. for sharing this message

  577. with you,

  578. as with this young woman

  579. at Church on Wednesday,

  580. is both because

  581. I want you to truly

  582. be saved from hell.

  583. And as long as we're living

  584. life like this,

  585. whether you're a cabinet minister

  586. or a student

  587. at the University of Ottawa

  588. or you're here today,

  589. as long as you're living a life

  590. where you are the king

  591. of your life,

  592. then what awaits you

  593. after death

  594. is hell.

  595. But the good news

  596. is that Jesus came,

  597. that we might come

  598. and become reconciled to God

  599. and find life in him

  600. and be saved from hell.

  601. But it's so much more than that.

  602. My passion for sharing

  603. this message with you today

  604. is not simply that

  605. if anyone is here

  606. who simply knows about God

  607. but doesn't know him,

  608. that you'd be saved from hell.

  609. But it's so much more than that.

  610. It's as we come to know God,

  611. not only are we saved from hell,

  612. but so much more than that.

  613. We come into a personal,

  614. thriving, intimate relationship

  615. with the very one

  616. who created desire,

  617. who created pleasure,

  618. who created life itself,

  619. who created life itself.

  620. And so my burden

  621. for sharing this with you

  622. is that,

  623. is not simply that

  624. coming to know God,

  625. becoming truly born again

  626. is not simply

  627. the best life,

  628. but it's the only life.

  629. Until you come to know God,

  630. not just know about him,

  631. but until you come to know God,

  632. you are,

  633. you're living,

  634. you're not even truly living,

  635. you're spiritually dead.

  636. And you might get,

  637. like some of these

  638. cabinet ministers I've met,

  639. you might get,

  640. accumulate for yourself

  641. wealth and popularity

  642. and all these things,

  643. but none of it satisfies.

  644. The only thing that can satisfy

  645. our hearts

  646. in the deepest places

  647. of our life

  648. is God himself.

  649. Not just knowing about him,

  650. but knowing him.

  651. And so as I thought

  652. how to put together,

  653. how to express

  654. the joy

  655. and the beauty

  656. and the certainty

  657. and the life

  658. that is

  659. a life that knows God,

  660. not just knows about him.

  661. I was trying to put it

  662. into words

  663. and I thought of this

  664. YouTube video

  665. I wanted to share with you.

  666. I think that

  667. this pastor does

  668. an even better job

  669. than I can ever do.

  670. So we're going to take

  671. three minutes

  672. and watch him talk

  673. about the beauty

  674. of knowing God

  675. and Jesus being our king.

  676. The Bible says

  677. my king

  678. is the king of the Jews.

  679. He's the king

  680. of Israel.

  681. He's the king

  682. of righteousness.

  683. He's the king

  684. of the ages.

  685. He's the king

  686. of heaven.

  687. He's the king

  688. of glory.

  689. He's the king

  690. of kings

  691. and he's the lord

  692. of lords.

  693. That's my king.

  694. I wonder,

  695. do you know him?

  696. My king

  697. is a sovereign king.

  698. No means of measure

  699. can define

  700. his limitless love.

  701. He's enduringly strong.

  702. He's entirely sincere.

  703. He's eternally

  704. steadfast.

  705. He's immortally

  706. graceful.

  707. He's empirically

  708. powerful.

  709. He's impartially

  710. merciful.

  711. Do you know him?

  712. He's the greatest

  713. phenomenon

  714. that has ever

  715. crossed the horizon

  716. of this world.

  717. He's God's son.

  718. He's a sinner's savior.

  719. He's the centerpiece

  720. of civilization.

  721. He's unparalleled.

  722. He's unprecedented.

  723. He is the loftiest idea

  724. in literature.

  725. He's the highest

  726. personality

  727. in philosophy.

  728. He's the fundamental

  729. doctrine

  730. of truth theology.

  731. He's the only one

  732. qualified

  733. to be

  734. an all-sufficient

  735. savior.

  736. I wonder

  737. if you know him today.

  738. He supplies

  739. strength

  740. for the weak.

  741. He's available

  742. for the tempted

  743. and the tried.

  744. He sympathizes

  745. and he saves.

  746. He strengthens

  747. and sustains.

  748. He guards

  749. and he guides.

  750. He heals

  751. the sick.

  752. He cleanses

  753. the lepers.

  754. He forgives

  755. sinners.

  756. He discharges

  757. debtors.

  758. He delivers

  759. the captive.

  760. He defends

  761. the feeble.

  762. He blesses

  763. the young.

  764. He serves

  765. the unfortunate.

  766. He regards

  767. the age.

  768. He rewards

  769. the diligent

  770. and he purifies

  771. the meek.

  772. I wonder

  773. if you know him.

  774. He's a key

  775. to knowledge.

  776. He's a well-trained

  777. of wisdom.

  778. He's a doorway

  779. of deliverance.

  780. He's a pathway

  781. of peace.

  782. He's a roadway

  783. of righteousness.

  784. He's a highway

  785. of holiness.

  786. He's a gateway

  787. of glory.

  788. Do you know him?

  789. Well,

  790. his life

  791. is massless.

  792. His goodness

  793. is limitless.

  794. His mercy

  795. is everlasting.

  796. His love

  797. never changes.

  798. His word

  799. is enough.

  800. His grace

  801. is sufficient.

  802. His reign

  803. is righteous.

  804. And a yoke

  805. is easy.

  806. And his burden

  807. is lighter.

  808. I wish I could

  809. describe him

  810. for yet he's

  811. indescribable.

  812. He's incomprehensible.

  813. He's invincible.

  814. He's irresistible.

  815. Well,

  816. you can't get him

  817. out of your mind.

  818. You see,

  819. you can't get him

  820. off of your head.

  821. You can't outlive him

  822. and you can't live

  823. without him.

  824. Well,

  825. the Pharisees

  826. couldn't stand him.

  827. When they found out

  828. they couldn't stop him.

  829. Pilots

  830. couldn't find

  831. any fault in him.

  832. Terrors

  833. couldn't kill him.

  834. Death

  835. couldn't handle him.

  836. And the rage

  837. couldn't hold him.

  838. Yeah!

  839. That's my king!

  840. That's my king!

  841. Amen!

  842. Amen!

  843. Amen!

  844. Proverbs 4.18

  845. says that the path

  846. of the righteous

  847. is like the first gleam

  848. of dawn,

  849. shining ever brighter

  850. till the full light

  851. of day.

  852. That truly,

  853. when it talks about

  854. shining ever brighter

  855. till the full light

  856. of day,

  857. it's not talking

  858. about the path

  859. of the righteous

  860. being a path

  861. necessarily of wealth

  862. or of comfort.

  863. But it's saying that

  864. no matter what life

  865. throws at you,

  866. no matter what comes

  867. down the pipe,

  868. that if you are someone

  869. who doesn't just know

  870. a boat,

  871. but you know him,

  872. then you are,

  873. that is your path.

  874. You have the path

  875. of the righteous.

  876. And it truly is

  877. a path that is growing

  878. ever in its awe

  879. and its joy,

  880. the sense of meaning

  881. and purpose

  882. and life everlasting.

  883. Jesus says

  884. in John chapter 17

    John 17 chapter mention

  885. that eternal life

  886. is this,

  887. that you know God.

  888. Eternal life

  889. is not just about

  890. being saved from hell,

  891. though that's part of it,

  892. but that forever,

  893. beyond death,

  894. as well as today,

  895. that you know God.

  896. There's a passage

  897. that gripped me

  898. the other day.

  899. I was reading,

  900. I'm reading through

  901. the Gospel of John

  902. and so it was a few

  903. weeks ago now

  904. because I just finished

  905. the Gospel of John,

  906. but a few weeks ago

  907. I was reading in the Bible

  908. John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  909. Jesus is standing

  910. before these men

  911. who know so much

  912. about God.

  913. They know the scriptures

  914. so well,

  915. they long for eternal life

  916. so much

  917. that these men

  918. actually write

  919. parts of the Bible

  920. in little boxes

  921. and tie that to their heads

  922. so the Bible

  923. is always on their forehead

  924. and they write the parts,

  925. beautiful parts of the Bible

  926. and they put it on

  927. the doorposts of their house

  928. so that whenever they walk

  929. through any door of their house,

  930. not just into the house

  931. but through their house,

  932. on every door frame

  933. they will be reminded

  934. of the scriptures

  935. and they're people

  936. who actually have

  937. the scriptures memorized

  938. more than any one of us

  939. including Pastor George,

  940. St. and Claire.

  941. These people long,

  942. they long for eternal life

  943. and Jesus is standing

  944. before them.

  945. Jesus in the body,

  946. he's right there

  947. standing before them

  948. and he says to them,

  949. he looks and says

  950. one of the most devastating things,

  951. one of the most haunting things

  952. that is anywhere

  953. in the scripture

  954. and he says to them

  955. that you search the scriptures

  956. because you believe

  957. that in them

  958. you have eternal life

  959. but then he says

  960. but basically

  961. he who is eternal life,

  962. he who the scriptures speak

  963. is standing before you.

  964. I hope that image

  965. haunts us today

  966. and for the rest of our lives.

  967. That haunting image

  968. brings healing to us

  969. as it grips our heart

  970. and leads us to pray

  971. saying God,

  972. don't let me be one

  973. who simply knows about you

  974. but let me be someone

  975. who knows you.

  976. That's a haunting image.

  977. They know the Bible so well.

  978. They know so much about God

  979. but they do not know him.

  980. And one of the fears

  981. that grips my heart

  982. in a good way

  983. is the concern

  984. that not only would

  985. I never be someone

  986. that simply knows about God

  987. but that my knowing of God,

  988. that those encounters with God

  989. would never ever be something

  990. just of the past.

  991. I think in some ways

  992. more haunting than an image

  993. of those men

  994. who have never known God

  995. but know so much about him

  996. is an image that

  997. comes home for some of us

  998. that we've had some amazing

  999. encounters with God

  1000. in the past.

  1001. There's been times

  1002. where we really spend

1003. real quality time with God.

1004. We've encountered the living God

  1005. and yet it's simply

  1006. something of the past.

1007. May we ever be people

1008. who are praying and longing

1009. to come to know God

  1010. deeper and deeper today.

1011. These words that Paul writes

  1012. in Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

1013. that I may know him.

  1014. In some ways,

1015. we think that this might be

  1016. a prayer for non-believers,

  1017. non-Christians,

1018. those who are spiritually dead

  1019. to pray,

1020. God, I want to know you.

  1021. But the Apostle Paul

  1022. is saying this

  1023. as the ultimate prayer

  1024. of his life

  1025. and he is someone

1026. who knows God so well,

  1027. so much better

1028. than a lot of us,

  1029. probably any of us,

  1030. know God.

1031. He knew God so well.

  1032. You see that still

  1033. the ultimate longing

  1034. of his heart is,

1035. God, I want to know you.

1036. And the letter he's writing,

  1037. this letter of Philippians,

  1038. he's writing to

  1039. the most mature

  1040. and godly church.

1041. Every one of Paul's letters

1042. includes some type of rebuke,

  1043. in many cases,

  1044. a lot of rebukes

  1045. about a lot of

  1046. very important things.

1047. But in this letter of Philippians

1048. to the church in Philippi,

1049. Paul only has good things,

  1050. encouragement to say.

1051. I mean, rebuke is a good thing

  1052. to say too,

  1053. but in this case,

  1054. it's only positive encouragement.

  1055. And so he's writing

1056. to someone who knows God so well

1057. to a city where they know God so well

  1058. and he's saying that

1059. this ultimate prayer for them

  1060. is,

1061. God, I want to know you.

1062. And so I want to encourage you,

1063. however well you know God,

1064. even if you feel you know him so well,

  1065. to not grow satisfied

  1066. with where you're at,

1067. but to continue to ask God

1068. to bring you into a deeper

  1069. relationship with him.

1070. And so one way to make this your own

1071. is to pray a prayer like this.

  1072. Dear God,

1073. may I never be satisfied

1074. with only knowing about you.

1075. Would you grow in me

  1076. an ever-increasing desire

1077. to know and be known by you?

  1078. Dear God,

1079. may I never be satisfied

1080. with only knowing about you.

1081. Would you grow in me

  1082. an ever-increasing desire

  1083. to know you

1084. and be known by you?

1085. I encourage you to make this

  1086. your own prayer.

1087. That's not where the verse ends,

1088. and so let's read it again together.

  1089. Philippians 3, verse 10.

    Philippians 3:10

1090. That I may know him

1091. and the power of his resurrection

1092. and may share his sufferings,

1093. becoming like him in his death.

1094. So part of what it means

  1095. to know Jesus

1096. is that you share in the power

  1097. of his resurrection.

1098. The power of the resurrection

1099. is the power that brought Jesus

1100. from the dead to life again.

1101. It's the power that we know one day

1102. for anyone who knows God,

1103. who is looking to Jesus

1104. as a savior and as our king,

1105. that each one of us knows

  1106. that it's that power

1107. that will one day raise us

  1108. back from the dead

1109. and we'll be with God

  1110. on the earth forever.

  1111. And it's that power

  1112. that breathes life

  1113. into our lungs spiritually

  1114. and makes us people

1115. who don't just know about God,

  1116. but actually know him.

  1117. It's that power

  1118. that when this woman

1119. was bound over like this

  1120. for 18 years

  1121. that strained her out

  1122. and allowed her

1123. not only to be healed,

  1124. but to know God.

1125. It's that power of resurrection.

  1126. The power over death.

  1127. Power over failure

  1128. to breathe life

1129. into that which has failed,

  1130. decayed, or died.

1131. One of the best ways

1132. that I can illustrate this

  1133. for us this morning

  1134. is from a movie

1135. I watched this past year

  1136. called Edge of Tomorrow.

  1137. In this film,

  1138. this soldier,

  1139. played by Tom Cruise,

  1140. he's not really a soldier,

1141. but he's sent into battle

  1142. as a soldier.

1143. And so he starts off

  1144. very afraid.

  1145. But something has happened

1146. to him early in the film,

1147. not to ruin it for you,

1148. but to ruin it for you.

  1149. Something happens to him

1150. where every time he dies,

  1151. he gets rebooted.

1152. So he gets to start

  1153. the day again.

1154. And so this soldier gets to,

  1155. they're fighting

  1156. a ferocious battle

  1157. of robot alien things.

1158. And so all these other soldiers

  1159. are getting just

  1160. absolutely dusted.

1161. But he keeps getting rebooted

1162. and gets to keep on

  1163. with the fight.

1164. So as the film goes on,

1165. he becomes this ultimate soldier.

  1166. Not simply because

  1167. he gets amazing training,

1168. but because he's no longer

  1169. afraid of the enemy

  1170. in any way.

1171. He's not afraid of death

  1172. at all.

1173. And so he's able to just

1174. walk right past the bullets,

  1175. just do his thing,

  1176. and be this incredible,

  1177. courageous,

  1178. ferocious soldier.

1179. And when you're not afraid

1180. of what's coming at you,

1181. you can live life all in.

  1182. And I'm part of a ministry

1183. where we live among the poor

1184. a few blocks from here

  1185. in Lower Town.

1186. And sometimes in the summer,

1187. the kids love to have

  1188. water fights.

  1189. I know as a kid,

  1190. like I used to,

1191. you're trying to not get

  1192. hit by the water.

1193. But there was some point

1194. in my life a couple years ago

  1195. where I realized,

1196. like, what can water do?

  1197. If you're honest.

1198. And so the kids would be

  1199. shooting their water guns

  1200. at me.

1201. And I'm not afraid of water,

1202. so I'll just walk right up

  1203. to the kids,

1204. and they're getting me wet.

1205. I'm not afraid of the water.

1206. So I become this ultimate

  1207. water fighting soldier.

1208. And I want to have

  1209. a massive bucket,

  1210. and these kids

  1211. get absolutely drenched.

  1212. It's a good thing

  1213. I have a good relationship

  1214. with their parents.

  1215. When you're not afraid

1216. of what is coming at you,

1217. you're able to live life

  1218. boldly and all in.

  1219. I know what it's like

1220. to not live that way.

  1221. As a young teen

  1222. and as a kid,

  1223. I was so gripped

1224. by the fear of failure

  1225. that I couldn't do anything

1226. in life that required risk.

1227. I could never have come up

1228. and sit in front of people

  1229. and preach with them.

  1230. Like, I couldn't have been done.

  1231. I would just,

  1232. I'd be so afraid I'd fail.

1233. Actually, I'd arrive at church

1234. and I'd go into the washroom

1235. and I'd just hide in the stall

  1236. until the service started

  1237. so I wouldn't have to interact

  1238. with anybody.

1239. Then I'd come into the service

1240. and when the service ended,

  1241. I'd slip out back

  1242. into the washroom,

  1243. hiding there

  1244. so I wouldn't have

  1245. any need to interact

  1246. with people

1247. and maybe say something stupid.

  1248. I was so afraid.

1249. But then as the reality

1250. of God came into my life,

1251. as I encountered the power

  1252. of the resurrection

  1253. and realized that

  1254. as a Christian,

  1255. you're able to fail.

1256. You're able to fall flat

  1257. on your face

  1258. knowing that the power

  1259. of the resurrection

1260. really flows in your veins

  1261. as sons and daughters

1262. of the Most High King.

  1263. That fear of failure

  1264. began to slip away.

1265. You see, like with Abraham,

  1266. Abraham had this call

  1267. in his life

  1268. to be a blessing

  1269. to the nations

  1270. through his descendants.

  1271. But his descendant,

  1272. his son,

  1273. God called him

  1274. to put to death.

  1275. How is Abraham

  1276. going to obey God?

  1277. His very calling,

1278. his ministry is on the line.

1279. But the scriptures are clear

  1280. that Abraham

1281. had such confidence in God

  1282. in his faithfulness

  1283. and in his power

  1284. for resurrection

  1285. that he is able

  1286. to obey God

  1287. and take his son

1288. and he actually gets ready

1289. to sacrifice his son's life.

1290. Then God comes through for him.

  1291. But Abraham knew

1292. that he's able to risk,

  1293. risk big time

  1294. because of God's

  1295. power of resurrection.

1296. So I want to encourage us today

1297. to live in that power,

1298. to live in that power

  1299. of the resurrection,

1300. to be able to be people

  1301. who can risk,

  1302. who can live boldly

  1303. because that is part

  1304. of what it means

  1305. to know God,

  1306. to live the adventure

  1307. of life with him,

  1308. alive in him.

  1309. And there's a scene

  1310. in Edge of Tomorrow

  1311. where Tom Cruise,

  1312. the person he's playing,

1313. where he loses the ability

  1314. to get rebooted,

  1315. to keep on living

  1316. after he's killed.

1317. And so as a result,

  1318. this guy who's

  1319. this amazing soldier,

  1320. so inspiring,

  1321. all of a sudden

  1322. becomes very timid again.

1323. And he's hiding so much

  1324. and he can't really

  1325. fight the enemy

1326. because he has to be

  1327. preserving his own self.

1328. And as long as we're

  1329. in that situation

  1330. where self-preservation

  1331. is our greatest priority,

1332. we're not able to live

  1333. like the way

1334. it was made to be lived.

1335. You and I both know that.

  1336. But Tom Cruise

  1337. would be a fool

  1338. if he wasn't trying

  1339. to preserve himself

  1340. because truly

  1341. if a bullet went

  1342. through his chest,

  1343. he'd be destroyed forever.

1344. And I share this with you

  1345. not to simply ruin

  1346. the film for you,

  1347. but also because

1348. if any one of us here

  1349. simply knows a lot

  1350. about God

1351. but we don't know him,

  1352. if Jesus is not

1353. our savior and our king,

1354. then we have every reason

  1355. to be afraid.

  1356. We have every reason

  1357. to never risk.

  1358. We have every reason

1359. to try to stay alive

1360. for as long as possible

  1361. because this is

1362. as good as it gets

1363. and it's not very good.

1364. If we simply are people

  1365. who are church people

  1366. but we're not actually

  1367. children of God,

1368. then we have every reason

  1369. to fear,

  1370. to be haunted

  1371. by that fear.

1372. But the good news is

  1373. there's no reason

1374. to stay in that place.

1375. We need to be honest

  1376. with where we're at

  1377. but I encourage you

  1378. if you're someone

  1379. that has not surrendered

  1380. your life to Jesus,

1381. if he is not your king,

  1382. if you're not looking

1383. to him to save you,

1384. then I plead with you

  1385. this morning,

  1386. do that.

  1387. Cry out to him.

  1388. Cry out to him

1389. that he would save you

  1390. and that you would

1391. not just know about him

1392. but that you would know him.

1393. But I think most of us

  1394. are better illustrated

  1395. by one other scene

  1396. in the film

  1397. which is that

  1398. there's a good portion

  1399. of the movie

  1400. where Tom Cruise

  1401. has that power

  1402. of being rebooted

1403. but he doesn't know it.

  1404. So you know

  1405. as someone watching

  1406. the movie

  1407. that if a bullet

  1408. goes through him

1409. he's going to be able

  1410. to keep on fighting

  1411. and he's able

  1412. to keep on thriving

1413. but he doesn't know it.

  1414. And so he's living

  1415. that timid,

  1416. unable to risk,

  1417. unable to fulfill

1418. his calling kind of way

  1419. but you know

  1420. that he really can

1421. just go and live all in.

1422. And as you watch that,

  1423. I can't help but think

  1424. that's how so many

  1425. of us live.

  1426. We know God.

  1427. We have his power

  1428. flowing through our veins.

1429. If we were to fail,

1430. if we were to risk

  1431. and go wrong,

1432. we know that he can

  1433. breathe new life

  1434. into that very calling,

  1435. into our very lives.

1436. And yet we're living life

1437. as if we don't even know him.

  1438. It's the confidence

  1439. and the power

  1440. of the resurrection

  1441. that famously led

  1442. Jim Elliot,

  1443. a young man,

  1444. younger than me,

  1445. to leave his comfortable

  1446. home in North America

1447. and go down to Ecuador

  1448. and be a missionary

1449. among some of the most

  1450. deadly people

  1451. on planet Earth.

  1452. It was a tribe

  1453. where they're always

  1454. killing each other,

  1455. cannibals.

  1456. No one has grandparents

1457. because no one lives that long.

1458. They're always killing each other.

1459. And he and some of his

  1460. young friends,

  1461. all these guys

  1462. in their young 20s,

  1463. went down there

  1464. to bring the gospel.

  1465. They brought the gospel.

  1466. They were killed.

  1467. They were cannibalized.

1468. But even in their death,

  1469. we saw the power

  1470. of the resurrection

  1471. in two ways.

  1472. One,

  1473. Jim Elliot knew

1474. that even if he was

  1475. to be killed

  1476. by these cannibals,

  1477. that that would not

1478. be the end of his life,

1479. that God would bring him

  1480. back from the dead

1481. at the end of time

  1482. and he'd spend

  1483. forever with God.

  1484. You see that bold,

  1485. that gutsy confidence

  1486. in him.

  1487. But he also knew

1488. that even if their mission

  1489. failed,

  1490. that God could breathe

  1491. new life into it.

1492. And I had the privilege

  1493. a few years ago

1494. of meeting the very man

  1495. that killed Jim

  1496. and his friends.

  1497. And this man

1498. and the entire people group

  1499. of these cannibals

  1500. are no longer cannibals.

  1501. They know God.

  1502. These people now

  1503. have grandparents.

  1504. He's a grandparent

  1505. to the children

  1506. of Jim Elliot

  1507. because they don't

  1508. have a grandpa.

  1509. He's now their grandfather.

  1510. We've seen the power

  1511. of the resurrection

  1512. breathe life

  1513. into a mission

  1514. that failed.

1515. For a lot of us,

  1516. living in the power

  1517. of the resurrection

1518. is not going to mean

  1519. going to another part

  1520. of the world.

  1521. But it might mean

  1522. speaking up

  1523. in the classroom

  1524. or at work

  1525. about the goodness

1526. of a life with God.

  1527. It might mean

  1528. sacrificing some

  1529. of our selfish dreams

  1530. for a greater dream

  1531. that God gives us.

1532. I just want to encourage

  1533. you this morning,

1534. if there is a burden

1535. that God has given you,

1536. if there is a dream

1537. that God has given you,

  1538. if there is something

  1539. that you know

1540. is the right thing to do

  1541. but you're afraid

  1542. of doing it

  1543. for fear of failure,

1544. that because of the power

  1545. of the resurrection,

  1546. if you know God,

  1547. to go for it,

  1548. to live life boldly,

  1549. risky,

  1550. live life all in

  1551. because we know

  1552. that God is faithful

  1553. and he is power

  1554. over death.

  1555. Truly he is power

  1556. over death.

  1557. There is something

1558. that you and I have

1559. that is so much more

  1560. than what Tom Cruise

1561. in Edge of Tomorrow had

  1562. in that Tom Cruise

  1563. simply had the power

  1564. of being rebooted

  1565. but you and I

  1566. actually share

  1567. in the power

  1568. of the resurrection.

  1569. So in this movie,

1570. even though he gets rebooted

  1571. and can live life

  1572. pretty confidently,

  1573. death is still

  1574. such a key ingredient

  1575. and all of that.

  1576. Death still has

  1577. kind of mastery

  1578. over him.

  1579. But because of Jesus'

  1580. resurrection,

  1581. in his death,

  1582. defeating death,

1583. and then even more so

  1584. through his resurrection,

  1585. as 1 Corinthians 15 says,

  1586. Paul writes,

  1587. he says,

  1588. O death,

  1589. where is your sting?

  1590. O death,

  1591. where is your victory?

  1592. For truly,

  1593. Jesus,

  1594. life,

  1595. has victory over death.

1596. And so you and I

  1597. can live a life

  1598. not only being rebooted,

  1599. but you and I

  1600. can live a life

  1601. in the confidence

  1602. that death

1603. is no longer in charge.

  1604. Death no longer

  1605. has the final word.

  1606. The final word

  1607. in our life

  1608. will never be failure

  1609. or death

  1610. or decay,

  1611. but is life,

  1612. is resurrection,

  1613. is Jesus.

1614. He has the final word.

1615. And so truly in him

1616. we can live a life

  1617. that's all in,

  1618. boldly and risky.

  1619. You can make this

1620. your own by living it out

1621. and it's part of that

  1622. by praying these words.

  1623. Dear God,

1624. help me to live boldly,

  1625. able to risk,

  1626. confident in the power

  1627. that raised Jesus

  1628. from the dead.

  1629. Dear God,

1630. help me to live boldly,

  1631. able to risk,

  1632. confident in the power

  1633. that raised Jesus

  1634. from the dead.

1635. I want to encourage you

  1636. this morning,

  1637. if you feel,

1638. if you see any part

  1639. of your life

  1640. that's not living

  1641. in that boldness

1642. that comes from the power

  1643. that raised Jesus

  1644. from the dead,

  1645. to make these words

  1646. your own.

  1647. The slides,

  1648. these prayers

  1649. will be put up

  1650. on the website

  1651. on Monday

  1652. and encourage you

  1653. to pray these words.

  1654. But that's not all.

  1655. Would you say

1656. this verse again with me?

  1657. Philippians 3.10

1658. That I may know him

  1659. and the power

  1660. of his resurrection

  1661. and may share

  1662. his sufferings

  1663. becoming like him

  1664. in his death.

  1665. I feel like me

  1666. when I was reading

  1667. through this

  1668. preparing for the message

1669. I saw that I may know him

  1670. and that filled me

  1671. with such joy

1672. and just pumped me up

  1673. and then I read

  1674. and may share

  1675. in his power

  1676. the power

  1677. of the resurrection

1678. and get even more stoked.

  1679. Come on.

  1680. I can live life

  1681. boldly and confidently.

  1682. And then we read

  1683. and may share

  1684. his sufferings

  1685. becoming like him

  1686. in his death.

  1687. I would have been

  1688. more pumped

  1689. if it had said

  1690. sharing his sufferings

  1691. becoming like him

  1692. in his death

  1693. and then said

  1694. and the power

  1695. of the resurrection

1696. because I'd look at like

1697. okay so if I die

  1698. with him

1699. I also live with him

  1700. as it says

  1701. also in the Bible.

  1702. But instead

  1703. it says

  1704. this positive thing

  1705. sharing the power

  1706. of the resurrection

  1707. and then a seemingly

  1708. more negative thing

  1709. and sharing his sufferings

  1710. and death.

  1711. But I believe

  1712. that Paul wrote it

  1713. this way

1714. for a very specific reason

  1715. and that is that

  1716. there is a certain

  1717. type of suffering

  1718. that only those

  1719. who have shared

  1720. in the power

  1721. of the resurrection

  1722. have come to life

  1723. in God

  1724. get to experience.

  1725. Earlier in Philippians

  1726. Paul writes

1727. that it is a gift

  1728. to believe in God

1729. and to suffer with him.

1730. That it is a gift

1731. to both believe in God

1732. and share in his suffering

  1733. with him.

  1734. And that doesn't make

1735. a lot of sense to us

  1736. because sharing

  1737. and suffering

  1738. tends not to be

  1739. something we think of

  1740. as a gift

  1741. but Paul sees it

  1742. as a gift.

  1743. Why is that?

  1744. Well we know

  1745. that our God

1746. is a God of compassion.

  1747. We know through

  1748. through the

  1749. through Jesus coming

  1750. into the brokenness

  1751. and the pain

  1752. and the death

  1753. of the human condition

  1754. taking all of that

  1755. upon himself

  1756. on the cross.

  1757. That our God

  1758. is a God

1759. that cares for the lost

  1760. cares for the broken

  1761. cares for the marginalized

  1762. those who are hurting

  1763. and suffering.

  1764. He's a compassionate God

  1765. but the word compassion

  1766. passion means to suffer

  1767. and C-O-M

  1768. is a prefix

  1769. that means with.

  1770. The word compassion

  1771. means to suffer with

  1772. those who are suffering.

  1773. That's what it means

  1774. to be compassionate.

1775. God doesn't just have pity on us

1776. he has compassion for us.

  1777. So if we're people

1778. who are going to join God

  1779. in the work

  1780. and the ministry

  1781. that God is doing

  1782. bringing light

  1783. to the darkness

1784. and life to the dead

  1785. healing to the broken

  1786. then we're joining

  1787. him

  1788. in being compassionate people

  1789. which necessitates

  1790. that we're suffering

1791. with those who are suffering

  1792. that we're sharing

  1793. in their pain.

  1794. When I was a little kid

1795. I was about five years old

  1796. I think

  1797. I

1798. a bunch of my friends

  1799. dads

  1800. did a

  1801. take your child

  1802. to work day

1803. so all my little friends

  1804. all went off

  1805. with their dads

  1806. to work

  1807. and for whatever reason

  1808. my dad

  1809. he's an amazing dad

  1810. didn't

1811. wasn't part of that program

  1812. and so I remember

  1813. just selfishly

  1814. going to my room

1815. I was feeling really bad

  1816. for myself

1817. and I sat on my bed

1818. come from a big family

1819. so it was a bunk bed

  1820. a lot of siblings

1821. so I sat on my bed

1822. and I just prayed something like

1823. we just learned the Lord's Prayer

  1824. as a family

1825. so I was sitting on my bed

  1826. and I said

1827. God if you're my Heavenly Father

  1828. can you have a

  1829. take your child

  1830. to work day

1831. and I prayed the prayer

  1832. just because I wanted

  1833. to go to work

  1834. with somebody

1835. I didn't want to be left out

1836. but in a very real way

1837. just a few weeks later

  1838. my church was

  1839. doing work

1840. in one of the poorest

  1841. the poorest

1842. area in all of Canada

  1843. in East Hastings

  1844. Vancouver

  1845. and I got to

  1846. go with my family

  1847. and be part of

  1848. what they were doing

1849. and there was some sense

  1850. that day

  1851. where I realized

  1852. as we went to

  1853. care for the poor

  1854. like that

  1855. I knew that God

  1856. was answering that prayer

1857. even in a small way

1858. that I was going to work

  1859. with my Heavenly Father

  1860. that He was caring

  1861. for the poor

  1862. and I was getting

1863. to join Him in that

1864. and as I've grown up

  1865. in my life

  1866. it's meant getting to

  1867. work among victims

  1868. of human trafficking

  1869. helping people find freedom

  1870. from actual slave traffickers

  1871. in my life

  1872. it's meant being a light

  1873. at Parliament Hill

1874. where I get to be

1875. with some of the richest

  1876. most comfortable

  1877. powerful people

  1878. yet they're miserable

  1879. and we try to

  1880. get to share

  1881. the truth

  1882. and the hope

  1883. we have

  1884. in Jesus

  1885. with them

  1886. it's been amazing

  1887. in everyone's life

  1888. it's going to look

  1889. like different things

  1890. but in every person

  1891. who knows God

1892. in every one of our lives

  1893. it's going to mean

  1894. something

  1895. it's going to mean

  1896. joining God

  1897. some way

  1898. in the work

  1899. He's doing

  1900. bringing light

  1901. into the darkness

1902. and so as Paul writes

  1903. about sharing

  1904. and suffering

  1905. I don't think

  1906. he's simply telling us

  1907. I don't think

  1908. he's simply telling us

  1909. that knowing God

  1910. is worth suffering for

  1911. it's as if he's saying

  1912. it's not simply

  1913. that he's saying

  1914. knowing God

  1915. is such a treasure

  1916. and if the ticket

  1917. to know God

  1918. is suffering

  1919. then it's worth

  1920. paying that ticket

1921. so you can know Him

  1922. He's actually so

  1923. so captured

  1924. he's so captivated

  1925. by the joy

  1926. and the meaning

  1927. and the gift

  1928. of knowing God

  1929. that if suffering

  1930. is our getting

  1931. to go to work

  1932. with God

  1933. then he's pumped

  1934. up for it

  1935. the reason you have

  1936. a take your child

  1937. to work day

1938. isn't so that your child

  1939. can be exposed

  1940. to some job

  1941. prospect in the future

1942. but so that your child

1943. can get to know you

  1944. because as we spend

  1945. time with people

1946. and see what they do

1947. and go to their workplace

  1948. we get to know

  1949. a whole dimension

  1950. to who they are

  1951. it's a whole other dimension

  1952. of who they are

1953. is what they do for work

  1954. and the work

  1955. that our Heavenly Father

  1956. is doing

  1957. is the most

  1958. purpose driven

  1959. hope filled

  1960. life giving work

  1961. imaginable

  1962. and so I want

  1963. to encourage you

  1964. to pray that prayer

  1965. that I prayed

  1966. as a little kid

  1967. that I still pray

  1968. to this day

  1969. still to this day

  1970. I pray

  1971. God

  1972. would you take me

  1973. to work with you

1974. when I get up in the morning

  1975. I'm like

  1976. God

1977. I want to join you

  1978. in the ministry

  1979. you're doing

  1980. bringing light

  1981. to the darkness

  1982. bringing light

1983. to those who are dead

1984. I want to encourage you

  1985. to pray that prayer

  1986. you may not say

  1987. like I did

1988. as a five year old

  1989. but maybe it would

  1990. sound more like this

1991. the words are on the slide

  1992. dear God

  1993. thank you

  1994. that you suffer

  1995. with those

  1996. who are suffering

  1997. may I join you

  1998. in suffering

  1999. for the gospel

  2000. that I may know

  2001. you more completely

  2002. dear God

  2003. thank you

  2004. that you suffer

  2005. with those

  2006. who are suffering

  2007. may I join you

  2008. in suffering

  2009. for the gospel

  2010. that I may know

  2011. you more completely

  2012. truly there's

  2013. no greater joy

  2014. there's no greater life

  2015. life itself

  2016. comes

  2017. as we come

2018. to know God, as we share the power of the resurrection, and as we join God in being

2019. compassionate people together with God. Would you join me in praying? Heavenly Father, thank you

2020. that you are a God who has not abandoned us to the darkness and the brokenness of the human

2021. condition. God, thank you that you haven't simply called us to be people who study you and know a

2022. lot about you, but you've called us to know you in the deepest, most intimate parts of our life,

2023. in every part of our life. God, thank you for Jesus. We long to know you, and so I pray that you

2024. would grow in us an ever-increasing desire to know you, and that you would bring us into that

2025. deeper and more personal relationship with you day after day after day for the rest of our lives,

2026. and that you would give us the joy of getting to help bring that to others. In Jesus' name,

  2027. Amen.
