  1. Father, we come before you this morning to think about your word.

  2. And we confess before you, Father, that what your son said about instituting the Lord's Supper,

  3. Father, we confess that it has caused great division amongst your people.

  4. And Father, we confess that even, Father, as some of us are waiting to get to that part in the scripture,

  5. some of us are hoping that I will score points against other people.

  6. They're worried, Father, that I'm going to end up saying something that they just think is really, really wrong.

  7. And Father, we confess before you that that which your son instituted for our health and for our salvation,

  8. for our wisdom, that we have turned it often, Father, into a very ugly thing,

  9. a very ugly thing that we feel proud of rather than saddened.

  10. So, Father, you know how hard and confused our heart is

  11. and how blind we are to the confusion and the hardness of our heart.

  12. So we ask that in your mercy you would do a great work amongst us this morning

  13. and that you would gently but deeply pour out your Holy Spirit upon us,

  14. pour out your Holy Spirit upon us,

  15. so that we might hear your word,

  16. that your word would come right to the center of who we are,

  17. the control and command center of who we are,

  18. and that your word would come there and do its mighty work in our midst,

  19. all for your glory.

  20. And this we ask in Jesus' name.

  21. Amen.

  22. Please be seated.

  23. Nothing like insulting some of you before I even begin the sermon and the prayer.

  24. I didn't mean to do that.

  25. You know, some of you who track with how I do sermons,

  26. it's often the case that however many talking points I have,

  27. that I spend the longest time developing the first point,

  28. and then it sort of often gets a bit quicker as it goes down.

  29. I'm going to sort of mess with your heads today

  30. because it's not going to be a 90-second sermon,

  31. but I'm going to begin with the first point.

  32. Andrew, I didn't warn even Andrew that I'm going to begin.

  33. If you could put the first point up, that would be really, really helpful.

  34. Here's the first point.

  35. Why can human beings so easily plan evil and plan good

  36. at the same time, all the while thinking that we are superior?

  37. Why is that about us human beings?

  38. I know, I was thinking afterwards, the grammar is not exactly perfect,

  39. but you get the idea.

  40. Why can human beings so easily plan evil things

  41. and plan good things at the same time

  42. and all the while think we're superior to other people?

  43. Like, why is it that we can do this?

  44. Why is it that whether or not you put this down on your to-do list,

  45. it could very easily be on your to-do list,

  46. find a birthday present for, you know, X,

  47. pick up some food for the party,

  48. make sure I spread gossip about why while I'm there,

  49. have a good time.

  50. Like, why is it that we can sort of have that in our to-do list

  51. and not at all even be remotely bothered by it?

  52. Why is it that maybe you've been in committee meetings like this

  53. or, and I've been in committee meetings like this

  54. where it's both been a secular crowd and a Christian crowd

  55. where it seems as if, you know, in a Christian crowd

  56. that on their to-do list was practice reading the Bible,

  57. prepare to pray,

  58. stab, you know, Fred and Bob in the back during the meeting

  59. and make sure I take the credit from Erin

  60. for all of the good things that she did.

  61. And that's on their to-do list.

  62. And that often we can have those things on our to-do list

  63. and we have absolutely no sense of guilt or shame whatsoever.

  64. And at the same time,

  65. can often think that we're better than other people.

  66. Like, why is it that human beings are like that?

  67. Like, why is it?

  68. See, I asked that from,

  69. on one hand it sounds very small and petty,

  70. but, you know, don't you think it's very, very possible

  71. that after the ISIS terrorists beheaded those Ethiopian Christians,

  72. don't you think that on the way home they thought,

  73. oh yeah, I have to pick up a soccer ball for my son

  74. because I want to have some fun playing soccer with my son.

  75. Like, don't you think that that's not at all an inconceivable scenario?

  76. And yet on the other hand,

  77. I mean, that's like crazy evil, right?

  78. A crazy evil.

  79. Let's martyr a whole pile of Ethiopian Christians

  80. and, oh yes, on the way home,

  81. buy a new soccer ball so I can play soccer with my son.

  82. Like, that's crazy evil.

  83. But on the other hand,

  84. if you think about it for a second,

  85. it's just on a continuum

  86. from, you know, buy a present,

  87. you know, pick up some hors d'oeuvres,

  88. make sure I spread gossip.

  89. It's a continuum.

  90. And why is it?

  91. And why is it that many of us,

  92. if I say this,

  93. we all know that it's true,

  94. but we can't actually,

  95. we're fairly powerless about changing it.

  96. Like, why is that?

  97. What is it about us human beings

  98. that that's in fact the case?

  99. Like, I mention all of this

  100. because if we're not aware,

  101. it's very interesting,

  102. the Bible brings this dynamic out

  103. very, very clearly

  104. in a very, very powerful way.

  105. that the Bible confronts us

  106. with what goes on in our hearts

  107. in the context of confronting,

  108. in a profound critique of religion,

  109. a profound critique of spirituality,

  110. it also brings out the dilemma

  111. of the human heart

  112. and all in the context

  113. of Jesus instituting the Lord's Supper.

  114. So if you get your Bibles

  115. and open them up to Luke 22,

  116. let's look and see how it is

  117. that unless we think about

  118. this question up here,

  119. unless this question

  120. has gripped our heart,

  121. we won't understand

  122. the dynamics of the text.

  123. We won't even see

  124. that the text is trying to make us

  125. ask this question about ourselves

  126. because many of us,

  127. even when we read the text,

  128. and even if George says,

  129. oh, it's a profound critique of religion,

  130. we go, yes,

  131. it's a profound critique of religion.

  132. And then we point our fingers

  133. and our memories

  134. to those brethren elders

  135. or those Pentecostal pastors

  136. or those Roman Catholics

  137. or those Orthodox

  138. or that bar manager

  139. or Stephen Harper

  140. or Thomas Moclair,

  141. and we point our finger at him

  142. or her or whatever,

  143. and at the same time

  144. not realize that there's three fingers

  145. pointing back at our hearts.

  146. Because you can never point your finger,

  147. unless you're missing some fingers,

  148. you can never point your finger

  149. at somebody without having

  150. a whole pile of fingers,

  151. more fingers pointing back at yourself.

  152. And so the Bible brings this to the fore

  153. as part of the lead up.

  154. In a sense,

  155. it's wanting us to realize

  156. we really need a Savior.

  157. I really need a Savior.

  158. Thomas Moclair needs a Savior,

  159. and so does Harper,

  160. but I need one.

  161. I have three fingers pointing back at me.

  162. Let's listen to Luke 22.

  163. Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread

  164. drew near,

  165. which is called the Passover,

  166. and the chief priests

  167. and the scribes

  168. were seeking how to put him to death,

  169. for they feared the people.

  170. This is a very powerful verse.

  171. Just a few verses,

  172. and I have to confess

  173. the first few times

  174. I've read through it

  175. and many other times before

  176. in just my devotional reading

  177. when I've read through it,

  178. it's like you skip through this part

  179. to get to the good stuff, okay?

  180. But this is actually,

  181. you know,

  182. this is really,

  183. this is human life.

  184. This is describing me and you.

  185. The chief priests and the Pharisees,

  186. they had two things

  187. on their to-do list,

  188. or three things on their to-do list.

  189. Don't forget to pick up the lamb.

  190. Make sure I pick up

  191. the matzo bread made by Moishi

  192. because my kids really like it,

  193. and they don't like the stuff

  194. made by Aaron.

  195. And attend a meeting

  196. on how to kill Jesus.

  197. That was their to-do list.

  198. And that's what it says.

  199. Now, the Feast of Unleavened Bread

  200. drew near,

  201. which is called the Passover,

  202. and the chief priests.

  203. It's very religious.

  204. Scribes could have been religious,

  205. could also just been

  206. professional people,

  207. the hipsters of the day.

  208. I don't know,

  209. like the spiritual,

  210. not religious people.

  211. We're not as much

  212. into the ceremonies,

  213. but we really know the Bible.

  214. We're really into words,

  215. and we're really into

  216. the meaning of words,

  217. and they're spiritual people,

  218. and they're seeking

  219. how to put Jesus to death.

  220. Why are they seeking

  221. to put Jesus to death?

  222. Because they feared the people.

  223. You see,

  224. what do they fear?

  225. The people?

  226. They fear the people

  227. because they think

  228. the people will do it,

  229. get it wrong about Jesus.

  230. And so why do they fear the people?

  231. They feel that they're worried,

  232. they're afraid,

  233. that the people are all stupid.

  234. They're smart.

  235. The people are stupid.

  236. And the bigger the gap

  237. between how smart you think you are

  238. and how dumb you think other people are

  239. is the size of your worry

  240. as you go through life

  241. for a whole pile of things.

  242. That doesn't happen

  243. to any of you at all.

  244. None of you are worried

  245. about different political things.

  246. Like, none of you are worried

  247. that Montclair will get elected.

  248. None of you are worried

  249. that Harper will get re-elected.

  250. Like, none of you.

  251. None.

  252. I'm sure that I'm...

  253. We're talking about Americans

  254. or something like that

  255. in the next election.

  256. We're not talking about Canadians.

  257. We're not talking about people

  258. who come to church.

  259. We're not talking about people

  260. in the bars

  261. and people doing yoga,

  262. you know, right now

  263. or in the coffee shops.

  264. Folks,

  265. this is how human life works.

  266. And we're not even often aware of it.

  267. The more that we think

  268. that we've got it right

  269. and that we're wise and smart

  270. and the more we think

  271. that people got it wrong

  272. and we're at the same time

  273. completely and utterly blind

  274. of the fact

  275. that that's...

  276. We think that somehow or another

  277. out of all the people

  278. on the planet,

  279. God has anointed me

  280. or you

  281. with this special knowledge.

  282. And there's all this herd

  283. of independent minds

  284. and we worry

  285. and we're afraid.

  286. Gosh, it's too bad

  287. the Bible doesn't talk

  288. about real life, eh?

  289. Too bad it doesn't address

  290. our hearts.

  291. That it's just boring.

  292. You see,

  293. we're so blind

  294. of what goes on

  295. in most of our lives

  296. that we don't even recognize

  297. ourselves here in the text.

  298. But that's exactly

  299. what's going on.

  300. See, that's why

  301. we have to ask ourselves

  302. the question,

  303. why can human beings

  304. so easily plan

  305. an evil thing

  306. and plan a good thing

  307. at the same time

  308. all the while thinking

  309. we are superior

  310. like they're doing?

  311. Because they're afraid

  312. of the people.

  313. They think the people

  314. are stupid.

  315. And really,

  316. is why can George

  317. so easily plan

  318. an evil thing

  319. and plan a good thing

  320. at the same time

  321. all the while thinking

  322. that he is superior?

  323. Like, why can George

  324. do that?

  325. I don't know why

  326. George can do that.

  327. And I'm not saying

  328. this just to

  329. dump a load

  330. on you folks.

  331. I mean,

  332. this is human life, folks.

  333. This is what Buddhism

  334. has to deal with,

  335. Hinduism,

  336. Marxism,

  337. spirituality,

  338. atheism,

  339. agnosticism.

  340. If these systems

  341. of thought

  342. can't actually

  343. articulate

  344. real human dilemmas

  345. and real human problems

  346. and have something

  347. to address them,

  348. then why do we

  349. follow them?

  350. So the question is,

  351. can Christianity

  352. actually both unveil

  353. this issue

  354. and actually speak

  355. into it,

  356. both confronting

  357. us to humble us,

  358. but at the same time

  359. promising some type

  360. of realistic hope?

  361. Now, the Bible

  362. doesn't,

  363. the Bible goes

  364. something which is

  365. a little bit deeper.

  366. This is all the context

  367. of Jesus setting up

  368. the Lord's Supper

  369. and the Bible's

  370. going to keep

  371. going deeper

  372. because here's the thing.

  373. This is actually

  374. a really, really,

  375. really significant

  376. passage

  377. and for a lot of us

  378. more reformed

  379. evangelical types

  380. who sort of get

  381. worried about

  382. charismatic types

  383. being a little bit

  384. kooky sometimes,

  385. I'm sure there's not

  386. a single person here

  387. that that describes

  388. and this very next thing

  389. is going to actually

  390. sort of kick us

  391. in the behind

  392. and make us realize

  393. that we need to get

  394. a lot more charismatic

  395. because look what it says

  396. in verse 3.

  397. So back up.

  398. The chief priests,

  399. the religious

  400. and the spiritual people,

  401. the cultural leaders,

  402. the academics,

  403. the influence makers,

  404. the people who write

  405. op-ed pieces

  406. in the National Post,

  407. the Globe and Mail,

  408. and the Ottawa Citizen,

  409. they all want

  410. to kill Jesus.

  411. The president of Ottawa U,

  412. the president of Carleton,

  413. head of the National Research Council,

  414. they all want to kill Jesus.

  415. They have a problem.

  416. And then guess who helps

  417. them solve the problem?

  418. The devil.

  419. That's what the text says.

  420. The devil solves their problem

  421. to move the action forward.

  422. Verse 3,

  423. then Satan entered into Judas

  424. called Iscariot

  425. who was of the number

  426. of the twelve.

  427. That means he's one

  428. of Jesus' apostles.

  429. And Judas went away.

  430. He left the twelve

  431. and conferred with the chief priests

  432. and the officers.

  433. That's the guys

  434. who have like swords

  435. and shields

  436. and daggers

  437. and clubs

  438. and whips

  439. and have the power

  440. to use them.

  441. How he might betray

  442. Jesus to them.

  443. And the religious

  444. and spiritual people

  445. in the academics

  446. and the political leaders

  447. were really happy.

  448. and they agreed

  449. to give Judas money.

  450. So once he heard

  451. that they were going

  452. to give him money,

  453. because you can see here

  454. that all these people

  455. who talk about

  456. how great a rebel Judas was,

  457. that they're all like

  458. really bang on, right?

  459. But once he realizes

  460. that they're going

  461. to give him money,

  462. he consents

  463. and sought an opportunity

  464. to betray Jesus

  465. to them

  466. in the absence

  467. of a crowd.

  468. So here's a second point.

  469. And if you could put it up,

  470. Satan is real,

  471. invisible,

  472. hostile,

  473. and active

  474. in human affairs.

  475. And I will not

  476. take him lightly

  477. or ignore him

  478. or fear him

  479. or be preoccupied

  480. with him.

  481. Now the fact of the matter

  482. is that I do

  483. all those things.

  484. Right?

  485. I mean,

  486. I don't think

  487. I ever fear him.

  488. I've been too well taught

  489. in the Bible

  490. to fear him, right?

  491. Although the one time,

  492. the first time

  493. I ever actually dealt

  494. with somebody

  495. that I believe

  496. was probably demon-possessed,

  497. it was a very intense

  498. emotional experience

  499. and I did feel a lot of,

  500. I felt some fear

  501. of my physical safety,

  502. not my spiritual safety,

  503. but I actually felt

  504. some fear

  505. of my physical safety

  506. when I confronted him.

  507. He was a con man

  508. working in evangelical

  509. and charismatic groups

  510. in Ottawa

  511. to rip them off

  512. and so huge discord.

  513. And I came,

  514. I happened to go

  515. to another Bible study,

  516. small group thing,

  517. and after we had sort of

  518. figured out

  519. what was going on

  520. with this guy

  521. and he was there.

  522. And when he saw me

  523. come in the room,

  524. the daggers

  525. and the anger

  526. and the hatred

  527. that went from him

  528. to me was like almost,

  529. it almost hit me

  530. like a blow.

  531. And when there was

  532. the first opportunity

  533. I told people

  534. about what he was doing

  535. in the city

  536. and he called me out

  537. to go outside

  538. and I was worried

  539. about my physical safety.

  540. But generally,

  541. when I put the point

  542. in things like this,

  543. I don't do it,

  544. you know,

  545. I put it as I

  546. because if you write it down

  547. in your notes,

  548. it's something that

  549. I hope you can say.

  550. And what this text

  551. is telling us,

  552. and I'm going to go on

  553. from this,

  554. it's not a big thing

  555. in the sermon,

  556. but I would not serve you

  557. well as your pastor

  558. if I didn't point it out.

  559. That Satan is real,

  560. invisible,

  561. hostile

  562. to God,

  563. to anything godly,

  564. to life.

  565. Satan hates life.

  566. Satan hates life.

  567. One of the things

  568. which is so powerful

  569. about the Lord of the Rings

  570. is in that,

  571. those three books,

  572. you get it more

  573. in the books

  574. than the movie,

  575. although you see it

  576. in the movie,

  577. is that the world

  578. in a sense

  579. that's completely

  580. given over to evil

  581. is a world

  582. of barrenness

  583. and pollution

  584. where you can't

  585. drink the water

  586. and nothing grows

  587. and the air is foul.

  588. And where evil

  589. does not rule,

  590. most preeminently

  591. in places like the Shire,

  592. there's crops,

  593. there's families,

  594. there's babies.

  595. And it's a very,

  596. at a very,

  597. very fundamental level,

  598. he draws the two paths

  599. in a powerful,

  600. epic story.

  601. Satan is real,

  602. invisible,

  603. hostile,

  604. and active

  605. in human affairs.

  606. And I will not

  607. take him lightly

  608. or ignore him

  609. or fear him

  610. or be preoccupied

  611. with him.

  612. You know,

  613. I was thinking about this

  614. when I was coming here.

  615. First of all,

  616. I just shared with somebody

  617. as I was coming in,

  618. like,

  619. I'm so dumb,

  620. like I really am.

  621. I'm really stupid

  622. lots of times.

  623. And I knew very early on,

  624. first on Monday

  625. when I looked at this text,

  626. I was going to mention

  627. something about the devil

  628. and I've had a rough week.

  629. And I should have realized

  630. that whenever I'm going

  631. to do a sermon,

  632. I'm going to mention the devil

  633. and I'm going to have

  634. a rough week.

  635. He's going to make

  636. my life miserable.

  637. And you know,

  638. one of the things,

  639. miserable was too strong a word,

  640. but he made my life hard.

  641. And one of the things

  642. that's really interesting,

  643. when I was writing

  644. this point down,

  645. I kept wanting

  646. to capitalize the hymn

  647. referring to the devil

  648. because that's what he wants.

  649. And I said,

  650. no, no, no, no,

  651. small h.

  652. Only one guy

  653. gets the big H

  654. in my notes,

  655. right?

  656. Or, you know,

  657. the Father,

  658. the Son,

  659. the Holy Spirit,

  660. God.

  661. But nothing else

  662. gets the big H

  663. or the big Y

  664. when it's talking

  665. about yours.

  666. And I'm just leaving that,

  667. you know,

  668. and so here it is.

  669. This is what's so amazing

  670. about this text.

  671. You know,

  672. I titled the sermon series,

  673. Luke,

  674. Jesus for Pagans

  675. and Skeptics.

  676. You can see here

  677. how Luke goes

  678. right to the heart

  679. with what's going on

  680. with human life.

  681. And you know,

  682. the fact of the matter is,

  683. is that in Buddhist cultures,

  684. Muslim cultures,

  685. Hindu cultures,

  686. secular cultures like ours,

  687. there's always a powerful belief

  688. in devils and demons.

  689. You go to chapters.

  690. We live in a post-post-Christendom culture,

  691. all sorts of opinion makers

  692. that are far, far, far removed

  693. from a Christian worldview.

  694. And just look at the number

  695. of books in a normal chapters

  696. that talk about occult matters.

  697. Just, you know,

  698. and so the Bible provides wisdom

  699. and clarity about the whole thing

  700. and a message that ultimately

  701. that Satan's completely

  702. and utterly defeated.

  703. You see, what we have to see

  704. with this,

  705. because if you look at

  706. all the Gospels,

  707. you'll see that the cross

  708. is a power encounter

  709. not only against sin,

  710. but also against the devil

  711. and hell itself

  712. and all hostile spiritual powers.

  713. And that in the cross,

  714. when Jesus dies,

  715. when the devil and the world

  716. thinks,

  717. and our flesh thinks

  718. that it is finally defeated,

  719. that irksome guy from Nazareth

  720. named Jesus,

  721. probably born illegitimately,

  722. and we think we've had

  723. our greatest triumph,

  724. that that's actually

  725. the moment of defeat

  726. for hell and sin

  727. and death and Satan

  728. and all hostile spiritual powers.

  729. And it's on one hand

  730. a profound moment of defeat.

  731. And for that part of us

  732. that longs to be redeemed

  733. and be made one with God,

  734. it's also the moment

  735. of our profound salvation

  736. and victory.

  737. So it's in this context

  738. that Jesus is going to institute

  739. the Lord's Supper.

  740. It's part of the reason

  741. why we understand

  742. why we often find in,

  743. that we often find

  744. parts of church service

  745. and even communion itself,

  746. why it's often so divisive

  747. and why we often find

  748. things so boring.

  749. Because Jesus,

  750. even as he's instituting

  751. the Lord's Supper,

  752. helps to reveal to us

  753. our human heart

  754. and the spiritual dynamic

  755. and power encounter

  756. that we're involved in

  757. when we gather

  758. in a few minutes

  759. to remember that Jesus

  760. died on the cross for us,

  761. that he conquered sin and death,

  762. that he is the power of God

  763. for salvation

  764. for all who believe,

  765. that he has defeated

  766. sin, death, hell,

  767. all hostile spiritual powers,

  768. that he has done this for you,

  769. that you by faith in him,

  770. by repentance and faith in him,

  771. can share in his victory.

  772. And that's what we gather

  773. in the presence of Jesus

  774. and the power of the Holy Spirit

  775. to remember.

  776. That's what we do.

  777. Now, before we get this,

  778. there's something evil

  779. that's been in the world

  780. for several millennium,

  781. and it's a growing evil

  782. in our culture.

  783. And it's something

  784. that I need to mention

  785. at this point in time

  786. because we need to be aware of it

  787. because it can rob us

  788. of our witness

  789. and rob us of our courage,

  790. and we don't realize

  791. that we need to pray into it.

  792. There's been many things

  793. in recent months

  794. about the growing rise

  795. of anti-Semitism in France.

  796. Maybe you haven't been noticing it,

  797. but there's been many things

  798. in certain media outlets

  799. that there is a significant exodus

  800. of Jewish people from France

  801. because of the violent anti-Semitism

  802. which is growing in that country.

  803. And you cannot be in Canada

  804. without realizing

  805. that there's increasing

  806. anti-Semitism in our country.

  807. And often universities

  808. are one of the centers of it,

  809. by the way.

  810. I don't mean to offend you

  811. if you're here as a professor.

  812. I mean, it's just the case

  813. that there's growing anti-Semitism

  814. in our country.

  815. And so it makes it

  816. very, very hard sometimes

  817. when you come to parts of the Bible,

  818. even the New Testament,

  819. how do you bear witness

  820. to the Jewishness of Jesus

  821. in a culture

  822. which is anti-Semitic?

  823. How do you witness

  824. to somebody who's anti-Semitic

  825. about Jesus

  826. given that Jesus is just so Jewish?

  827. And we're about to see

  828. the Jewishness of Jesus.

  829. I mean, he's Jewish.

  830. Everything that we're about to see

  831. in the story

  832. that leads up to the institution

  833. of the Lord's Supper

  834. shows that Jesus is a pious Jew.

  835. And that even as he institutes

  836. this thing,

  837. which has become

  838. one of the two main things

  839. that Christians are to do,

  840. baptism is the other one

  841. and the Lord's Supper

  842. is the other one.

  843. It's to mark us as Christians.

  844. We are to do it

  845. for our soul's health,

  846. for our communal health,

  847. to bear witness to Jesus,

  848. to proclaim Jesus.

  849. We are to do Holy Communion

  850. and Jesus institutes it

  851. in the context

  852. of a Jewish festival and feast.

  853. And it's very interesting.

  854. Some of you,

  855. when you were listening to me

  856. read Luke chapter 22,

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  857. you might have thought,

  858. one moment,

  859. there's not two cups.

  860. There's only one cup in communion.

  861. Jesus gets it wrong.

  862. Cup, bread, cup.

  863. No, no, no.

  864. That's not how it works.

  865. It's actually very interesting.

  866. In this,

  867. which is the most pagan

  868. of the Gospels

  869. in terms of it's most

  870. clearly written for pagans,

  871. Luke,

  872. of all of the writers

  873. who bears witness

  874. to the institution

  875. of the Lord's Supper,

  876. is the one that draws out

  877. the Jewishness

  878. and the connection

  879. to Passover

  880. of the Lord's Supper.

  881. So let's listen to it.

  882. And at first,

  883. by the way,

  884. this next little part,

  885. verse seven,

  886. it sounds like a spy novel.

  887. It's really interesting.

  888. I was reading some commentators

  889. and they get all,

  890. you know,

  891. they all get,

  892. you know,

  893. they get their,

  894. you know,

  895. their knickers in a knot,

  896. you know,

  897. all about,

  898. you know,

  899. what's going on.

  900. Did Jesus arrange this,

  901. et cetera?

  902. It sounds like a spy novel.

  903. You know,

  904. go to the corner

  905. of here and here,

  906. light a cigarette,

  907. you know,

  908. look down,

  909. you know,

  910. a tall,

  911. dark stranger

  912. will come and talk to you

  913. and then you go to a bar

  914. and you'll meet a,

  915. anyway,

  916. you know what,

  917. it sounds just like a spy novel.

  918. Here's how it goes.

  919. Verse seven,

  920. then came the day

  921. of unleavened bread.

  922. I'll talk about this

  923. in a moment

  924. on which the Passover lamb

  925. had to be sacrificed.

  926. So Jesus sent Peter and John

  927. saying,

  928. go and prepare the Passover

  929. for us

  930. that we may eat it.

  931. So Jesus gives Peter

  932. and John this command.

  933. So they say to him,

  934. where will you have us prepare it?

  935. Like they might've even

  936. been a little bit frustrated.

  937. Historians believe

  938. that the population,

  939. the year round population

  940. of Jerusalem around this time

  941. was probably about 30,000 people.

  942. And for Passover,

  943. the estimate of the number

  944. of pilgrims

  945. that would swell

  946. the city of Jerusalem,

  947. that they estimate

  948. that it's somewhere

  949. between 85 to 125,000 pilgrims

  950. would come to Jerusalem

  951. for the Passover.

  952. And of course,

  953. many Jewish people,

  954. they would also have,

  955. I mean,

  956. in that culture,

  957. it would be a profound

  958. hospitality culture

  959. and also a culture

  960. for making money.

  961. Nothing wrong with that.

  962. That's not,

  963. nothing disparaging about that.

  964. So they would have rooms

  965. and stuff like that.

  966. But the disciples

  967. were probably really worried

  968. about where are we going

  969. to celebrate the Passover?

  970. Okay?

  971. So whether Jesus

  972. just does this

  973. through,

  974. you know,

  975. whether it's a God thing

  976. or whether Jesus,

  977. that doesn't matter.

  978. But what's going to happen now

  979. is it's going to sound

  980. like a spy novel, right?

  981. Verse 10.

  982. Jesus said to them,

  983. behold,

  984. when you enter the city,

  985. a man carrying a jar of water

  986. will meet you.

  987. Pause here for a second.

  988. This is a really hard thing.

  989. Until I looked at commentaries,

  990. I didn't know this.

  991. The reason this is a significant,

  992. you see,

  993. if you said in Ottawa,

  994. okay,

  995. walk down to the canal

  996. and when you see a man

  997. carrying a water bottle,

  998. follow him.

  999. You'd see so many men

  1000. carrying water bottles,

  1001. you'd go,

  1002. how do I,

  1003. what do I do?

  1004. Okay,

  1005. in this culture,

  1006. carrying a water,

  1007. carrying a water jar

  1008. is woman's work.

1009. The man would have stuck out.

1010. The man would have stuck out.

1011. And so back to verse 10.

  1012. He said to them,

  1013. behold,

1014. when you enter the city,

  1015. have entered the city,

1016. a man carrying a jar of water

  1017. will meet you.

1018. Follow him into the house

  1019. that he enters

1020. and tell the master of the house.

1021. The teacher says to you,

1022. where is the guest room

1023. where I may eat the Passover

  1024. with my disciples?

1025. And he will show you

1026. a large upper room furnished,

  1027. prepare it there.

1028. And they went and found it

1029. just as he had told them

1030. and they prepared the Passover.

1031. And when the hour came,

  1032. he reclined a table

1033. and the apostles with him.

1034. And he said to them,

  1035. I have earnestly desired

1036. to eat this Passover with you

  1037. before I suffer.

  1038. And earnestly desired sounds,

  1039. it's a good translation,

  1040. but it's like a,

  1041. this is a profound

  1042. emotional experience for him.

  1043. The original language

  1044. communicates that this is

  1045. a profound emotional experience,

  1046. a deeply emotional experience

  1047. for Jesus to celebrate

  1048. the Passover

  1049. with his disciples

  1050. one final time.

  1051. And, you know,

  1052. and by the way,

1053. what we have to do

1054. when we read the text

  1055. in a culture

  1056. which is increasingly

  1057. becoming anti-Semitic,

  1058. we don't hide

  1059. the Jewishness of Jesus.

  1060. Jesus.

1061. And we just need to pray

  1062. that God knew

  1063. what he was doing

1064. when he had a text

  1065. like this written.

1066. And we just have to pray

1067. that God will touch hearts.

1068. That God will touch hearts.

1069. That maybe he will use this text

1070. to make a person aware

  1071. of prejudice.

1072. Because as you and I know,

  1073. for those of us

  1074. who have prejudices,

  1075. prejudices are a very,

1076. very, very deeply persistent sin

1077. that we are blind to

  1078. in ourselves.

  1079. It's deeply human.

  1080. It's not a white problem

  1081. or an Asian problem

  1082. or an African problem.

1083. It is a human problem

  1084. to have prejudice.

1085. And it is almost always

  1086. hard for us

  1087. to recognize it

  1088. in ourselves.

  1089. And maybe that's

1090. why there is a text

  1091. like this.

1092. And maybe it will be

  1093. something like that

1094. that will touch our heart

  1095. to make us realize

1096. that we need a Savior.

1097. And so we just need

  1098. to trust God

  1099. and pray

  1100. and have courage.

1101. Anyway, back to the text.

  1102. I have,

  1103. with deep emotion,

  1104. he tells them,

  1105. and the disciples

  1106. would have known

  1107. that Jesus was

  1108. deeply emotional.

  1109. I have desire

  1110. to eat this Passover

  1111. with you

  1112. before I suffer.

  1113. Once again,

  1114. they don't know

  1115. he's about to die.

  1116. Judas knows

  1117. he's about to come

1118. to a really bad end

  1119. sometime really soon.

  1120. He's got the dough,

  1121. got the promise

  1122. of the money,

  1123. but they don't know.

  1124. And yet again,

  1125. Jesus is telling them

  1126. he's going to die.

  1127. In fact,

  1128. he'll be dead

  1129. within 24 hours

  1130. of this,

  1131. of him saying this.

  1132. For I tell you,

1133. I will not eat it

  1134. again.

  1135. See that?

  1136. He's telling him

  1137. he's going to die.

  1138. He's also telling them

  1139. he's going to rise

  1140. from the dead

  1141. until it is fulfilled

1142. in the kingdom of God.

  1143. In fact,

  1144. he's telling them

  1145. that everything

  1146. that's going on

  1147. is all part

  1148. of God's plan.

  1149. It's all part

  1150. of God's plan

  1151. to bring a kingdom

  1152. that comes out

  1153. of every people group.

  1154. It's going to come

  1155. from Africa.

  1156. It's going to come

  1157. from Asia.

  1158. It's going to come

  1159. from First Nations people.

  1160. It's going to come

  1161. from the Inuit.

  1162. It's going to come

  1163. to Europeans

  1164. and North Americans.

  1165. It's going to come

  1166. to Australians

  1167. and New Zealand

  1168. and it is going

1169. to come to the whole planet.

1170. It's going to be offered

  1171. for everybody.

  1172. This is a planet-wide plan

  1173. that God has had,

  1174. a big plan

  1175. for a long time

  1176. and it's all coming

  1177. to be fulfilled

  1178. and my death

1179. is a big part of it

1180. and I'm going to explain

  1181. what's going to happen

  1182. in a moment

1183. but it's going to happen

  1184. and it's all

  1185. of the scriptures

  1186. in the Old Testament

  1187. we're pointing

  1188. towards this time

  1189. and pointing towards

  1190. the time

  1191. when I come again

  1192. and it's all fulfilled.

  1193. And here's now

  1194. Jesus entering

  1195. into the Passover meal

  1196. and scholars debate

  1197. whether in the time

  1198. of Jesus

  1199. whether there were

  1200. three cups

  1201. in the Passover meal

  1202. or whether there were

  1203. four cups.

  1204. It doesn't matter

  1205. whether there were

  1206. three or four

1207. and it's not entirely clear

  1208. whether this is

  1209. the first cup,

  1210. the second cup,

  1211. the third cup

  1212. or if there was

  1213. a fourth cup

  1214. that Jesus is about

  1215. to partake.

  1216. It's not clear

  1217. from the text

  1218. whether the second cup

1219. which is going to come

  1220. in verse 20

1221. is one of the Passover cups

  1222. or what's going on.

  1223. It's not clear

  1224. what's going on.

  1225. That's fine

1226. but what Luke does here

  1227. to his pagan audience

1228. is he brings it home

  1229. that Jesus partakes

  1230. of the Passover meal

  1231. and the Passover meal

  1232. is the remembrance

  1233. for the Jewish people.

  1234. Exodus 12

1235. it's in the going deeper notes

1236. I give you the reference

  1237. and it's the promise

  1238. that God has said

  1239. that he would deliver

  1240. his people

  1241. out of bondage

  1242. and slavery

  1243. and Egypt

  1244. and bring and win

  1245. a people for himself

1246. and he does not pick

  1247. the smartest people

  1248. the wisest people

  1249. the most virtuous people

1250. it's an act of grace

  1251. and that's why

  1252. ordinary people

  1253. like you and me

  1254. can be called

  1255. to belong to Jesus

  1256. if you're worried

1257. that you're not smart enough

  1258. spiritual enough

  1259. unspiritual enough

  1260. rich enough

  1261. together enough

  1262. that's entirely good.

  1263. God has never used

  1264. those criteria.

  1265. He calls people

  1266. because he's love

  1267. not because of

  1268. our excellencies.

  1269. He calls us

  1270. because he's love

  1271. and so

  1272. God calls

  1273. Israel

  1274. out of slavery

  1275. and bondage

  1276. in Egypt

  1277. and he says

  1278. to Pharaoh

  1279. he even tells

  1280. Pharaoh

  1281. what he's about

  1282. to do

  1283. that the firstborn

  1284. will die

  1285. and nobody

  1286. takes any action

  1287. and the people

  1288. of Israel

  1289. they gather

  1290. into the house

  1291. and before they

  1292. gather into the house

  1293. they kill a lamb

  1294. the lamb dies

  1295. in their stead

  1296. and they take

1297. the blood of the lamb

  1298. and they put

1299. the blood of the lamb

  1300. on the entrance way

  1301. into the house

  1302. and they enter

  1303. into the house

  1304. eating unleavened bread

  1305. and the lamb

  1306. that has died

  1307. on their behalf

  1308. and God

  1309. comes in wrath

  1310. and judgment

  1311. against all slaveholders

  1312. all who keep people

  1313. in bondage

  1314. all who oppress

  1315. others

  1316. all who are people

  1317. exactly like us

  1318. and God comes

  1319. in judgment

  1320. and kills the firstborn

  1321. and when he sees

  1322. a house

  1323. which is covered

  1324. by the blood

  1325. of the lamb

  1326. his wrath

  1327. passes over them

  1328. because

  1329. the lamb

  1330. has borne

  1331. the judgment

  1332. that the people

  1333. deserve

  1334. and God's judgment

  1335. does not deliver

  1336. does not fall

  1337. on them

  1338. John's gospel

  1339. is introduced

  1340. by John the Baptist

  1341. telling his disciples

  1342. behold the lamb

  1343. of God

  1344. who takes away

1345. the sin of the world

  1346. behold the lamb

  1347. of God

  1348. who takes away

  1349. the sin

  1350. of the world

  1351. the true

  1352. and greater

  1353. lamb

  1354. of Exodus 12

  1355. enters into

  1356. human history

  1357. and ministry

  1358. with the words

  1359. of John the Baptist

  1360. the true

  1361. and greater

  1362. lamb

  1363. of Exodus 12

  1364. walks among us

  1365. the true

  1366. and greater

  1367. lamb

  1368. will die

  1369. upon the cross

  1370. and it is

  1371. that true

  1372. and greater

  1373. lamb

  1374. that remembers

  1375. those lesser

  1376. lambs

  1377. which are slain

  1378. some

  1379. 14 or 1500

  1380. years earlier

  1381. as a picture

  1382. and a prophecy

  1383. and a promise

  1384. that God

  1385. would send

  1386. the true

  1387. and greater

  1388. lamb

  1389. to bear

  1390. the sins

  1391. of all the people

  1392. Jewish and pagan

  1393. alike

  1394. to inaugurate

  1395. and create

  1396. a new

  1397. and greater

  1398. covenant

  1399. that would be

  1400. without geography

  1401. would be without race

  1402. would be without

  1403. color

  1404. would be without

  1405. ethnicity

  1406. would be without

  1407. social class

  1408. would be without

  1409. sex

  1410. that would be

  1411. for all people

  1412. who put their

  1413. faith and trust

  1414. in the lamb

  1415. that God

  1416. provides

  1417. to deal with

  1418. people

  1419. who cannot

  1420. address

  1421. and change

  1422. a human heart

  1423. whereby they

  1424. will have

  1425. on their

  1426. to-do list

  1427. today I will

  1428. slaughter

  1429. Ethiopian

  1430. Christians

  1431. and then I

  1432. will buy

  1433. a soccer ball

  1434. for my son

  1435. so I may play

  1436. with him

  1437. on the way

  1438. home

  1439. he dies

  1440. for us

  1441. who cannot

  1442. change our

  1443. human heart

  1444. he dies

  1445. for you

  1446. and me

  1447. who cannot

  1448. change

  1449. our human

  1450. heart

  1451. and so

  1452. he takes

  1453. the cup

  1454. for the

  1455. Passover meal

  1456. in verse 17

  1457. and when he

  1458. had given

  1459. thanks he

  1460. said

  1461. take this

  1462. and divide

  1463. it among

  1464. yourselves

  1465. for I

  1466. tell you

  1467. that from

  1468. now on

  1469. I will

  1470. not drink

  1471. of the

  1472. fruit of

  1473. the vine

  1474. until the

  1475. kingdom

  1476. of God

  1477. comes

  1478. and now

  1479. whether that

  1480. was the

  1481. third or

  1482. fourth cup

  1483. in the

  1484. Passover meal

  1485. or the

  1486. first or

  1487. the second

  1488. the text

  1489. doesn't make

  1490. it clear

  1491. it doesn't

  1492. really matter

  1493. which one

  1494. of them

  1495. it is

  1496. Jesus now

  1497. institutes

  1498. the Lord's

  1499. Supper

  1500. Holy Communion

  1501. the Eucharist

  1502. if you could

  1503. put up the

  1504. third point

  1505. Andrew

  1506. third point

  1507. just before I

  1508. read the

  1509. words of

  1510. the institution

  1511. of the

  1512. Lord's

  1513. Supper

  1514. here's what

  1515. we have to

  1516. understand

  1517. in love

  1518. Jesus

  1519. died for

  1520. me

  1521. he died

  1522. for you

  1523. I always

  1524. put these

  1525. remember I

  1526. put these

  1527. words down

  1528. that if you

  1529. want to make

  1530. your notes

  1531. that is

  1532. personal

  1533. it's not

  1534. just that in

  1535. love Jesus

  1536. died for

  1537. for John

  1538. or Frida

  1539. or you

  1540. know Louise

  1541. or you

  1542. know Harold

  1543. but that

  1544. Jesus died

  1545. for me

  1546. in love

  1547. Jesus died

  1548. for me

  1549. in love

  1550. he explained

  1551. the meaning

  1552. of his

  1553. death

  1554. before it

  1555. happens

  1556. and in

  1557. love

  1558. he calls

  1559. ordinary

  1560. people

  1561. to be

  1562. his

  1563. and to

  1564. meet

  1565. together

  1566. and to

  1567. remember

  1568. who he

  1569. is

  1570. and what

  1571. he

  1572. accomplished

  1573. for us

  1574. that's what

  1575. Jesus is

  1576. doing

  1577. this is

  1578. all love

  1579. you see

  1580. what

  1581. just a

  1582. week ago

  1583. a couple

  1584. of weeks

  1585. ago

  1586. I flew

  1587. into

  1588. Newark

  1589. New Jersey

  1590. for the

  1591. first time

  1592. and I

  1593. actually

  1594. happened to

  1595. be in

  1596. aisle seat

  1597. and it

  1598. actually

  1599. happened to

  1600. be that

  1601. the plane

  1602. was coming

  1603. in so

  1604. that I

  1605. could see

  1606. Manhattan

  1607. spread out

  1608. through the

  1609. window

  1610. and I

  1611. could see

  1612. the

  1613. Empire State

  1614. Building

  1615. I can

  1616. see all

  1617. the buildings

  1618. it's such

  1619. an iconic

  1620. image

  1621. you know

  1622. so many

  1623. movies

  1624. superhero movies

  1625. and others

  1626. you know

  1627. you see

  1628. the city

  1629. and you see

  1630. the

  1631. Statue of

  1632. Liberty

  1633. and it was

  1634. really neat

  1635. you know

  1636. I was

  1637. moved by it

  1638. I know it's

  1639. silly

  1640. but I was

  1641. moved by it

  1642. and what

  1643. Jesus is about

  1644. to do right

  1645. now is

  1646. he's giving

  1647. the disciples

  1648. a 10,000

  1649. feet in the

  1650. air view

  1651. of the

  1652. chaos

  1653. confusion

  1654. and evil

  1655. that's about

  1656. to engulf

  1657. them

  1658. and what's

  1659. going to

  1660. engulf

  1661. them over

  1662. the next

  1663. 24 hours

  1664. in particular

  1665. and then

  1666. after that

  1667. on the

  1668. Easter Sunday

  1669. there's going

  1670. to be

  1671. ears cut

  1672. off

  1673. there's going

  1674. to be

  1675. kisses

  1676. of betrayal

  1677. there's going

  1678. to be

  1679. people told

  1680. that they're

  1681. not going

  1682. to actually

  1683. stand up

  1684. for Jesus

  1685. there's

  1686. going to be

  1687. fear

  1688. there's going

  1689. to be

  1690. men running

  1691. away

  1692. naked

  1693. there's

  1694. going

  1695. to be

  1696. whips

  1697. there's

  1698. going

  1699. to be

  1700. complete

  1701. and utter

  1702. chaos

  1703. and there's

  1704. going to be

  1705. shame

  1706. and there's

  1707. going to be

  1708. all this

  1709. things going

  1710. on

  1711. and Jesus

  1712. very calmly

  1713. and in a

  1714. very very

  1715. shocking way

  1716. he gives

  1717. them

  1718. from a

  1719. 10,000

  1720. feet above

  1721. the scenes

  1722. that it

  1723. might

  1724. it's going

  1725. to look

  1726. chaotic

  1727. it's going

  1728. to look

  1729. evil

  1730. it's going

  1731. to look

  1732. like the

  1733. most crazy

  1734. horrible

  1735. terrifying

  1736. thing

  1737. that any

  1738. of you

  1739. have been

  1740. through

  1741. up until

  1742. now

  1743. but I

  1744. want you

  1745. to understand

  1746. what's

  1747. going on

  1748. I want

  1749. you to

  1750. understand

  1751. that my

  1752. body has

  1753. been broken

  1754. for you

  1755. and that

  1756. my blood's

  1757. being shed

  1758. for you

  1759. and that

  1760. I am

  1761. inaugurating

  1762. a new

  1763. covenant

  1764. for you

  1765. and I'm

  1766. doing all

  1767. this because

  1768. I love

  1769. you

  1770. because God

  1771. loves you

  1772. and because

  1773. God has

  1774. seen you

  1775. with the

  1776. problem of

  1777. your human

  1778. heart

  1779. and he

  1780. wants to

  1781. deal with

  1782. what you

  1783. cannot deal

  1784. with

  1785. he's

  1786. going

  1787. to

  1788. deal

  1789. with

  1790. it

  1791. on

  1792. your

  1793. behalf

  1794. verse 19

  1795. and 20

  1796. and Jesus

  1797. took bread

  1798. and when he

  1799. had given

  1800. thanks he

  1801. broke it

  1802. and gave

  1803. it to

  1804. them saying

  1805. this is my

  1806. body which

  1807. is given

  1808. for you

  1809. do this

  1810. in remembrance

  1811. of me

  1812. he did

  1813. it out

  1814. of love

  1815. he's

  1816. letting

  1817. them know

  1818. this

  1819. look at

  1820. it again

  1821. this is

  1822. my body

  1823. he breaks

  1824. the body

  1825. the only

  1826. way we

  1827. can receive

  1828. Jesus

  1829. is by

  1830. him

  1831. crucified

  1832. he's not

  1833. an example

  1834. I mean he

  1835. is an

  1836. example

  1837. but he's

  1838. way more

  1839. than an

  1840. example

  1841. he didn't

  1842. break his

  1843. body to

  1844. be an

  1845. example

  1846. although

  1847. breaking

  1848. of his

  1849. body

  1850. grounds

  1851. us

  1852. understanding

  1853. taking

  1854. so many

  1855. risks

  1856. and being

  1857. willing

  1858. to sacrifice

  1859. for others

  1860. as the

  1861. gospel

  1862. grips us

  1863. it starts

  1864. to model

  1865. for us

  1866. and shape

  1867. for us

  1868. a way

  1869. that we

  1870. are to

  1871. understand

  1872. how to

  1873. make

  1874. marriages

  1875. work

  1876. and families

  1877. work

  1878. and churches

  1879. work

  1880. and life

  1881. work

  1882. that there

  1883. needs to be

  1884. sacrifice

  1885. somebody has

  1886. to be the

  1887. one to turn

  1888. the other

  1889. cheek

  1890. someone has

  1891. to be

  1892. the one

  1893. who will

  1894. just bear

  1895. in themselves

  1896. some of

  1897. the pain

  1898. and actually

  1899. be able to

  1900. forgive

  1901. and what

  1902. Jesus is

  1903. about to do

  1904. is to be

  1905. a profound

  1906. thing

  1907. which grips

  1908. us

  1909. and as it

  1910. grips us

  1911. it starts

  1912. to nudge

  1913. us in

  1914. certain

  1915. directions

  1916. of behaving

  1917. it starts

  1918. to draw

  1919. us

  1920. in certain

  1921. directions

  1922. it grounds

  1923. us to

  1924. understand

  1925. why it's

  1926. worth it

  1927. to maybe

  1928. do such

  1929. things

  1930. and it

  1931. starts to

  1932. shape us

  1933. but beyond

  1934. all of that

  1935. it's a power

  1936. of God

  1937. for salvation

  1938. that he

  1939. does

  1940. if there's

  1941. no salvation

  1942. there's no

  1943. point of a

  1944. model

  1945. there's

  1946. no salvation

  1947. the last

  1948. thing we

  1949. need

  1950. is more

  1951. advice

  1952. it's

  1953. salvation

  1954. first and

  1955. foremost

  1956. and he

  1957. took the

  1958. bread

  1959. and when he

  1960. had given

  1961. thanks

  1962. he broke

  1963. it

  1964. and he

  1965. offers to

  1966. them

  1967. the broken

  1968. bread

  1969. and he

  1970. says

  1971. this

  1972. broken

  1973. bread

  1974. is my

  1975. body

  1976. and it's

  1977. given

  1978. for you

  1979. I

  1980. break

  1981. my

  1982. body

  1983. for you

  1984. and the

  1985. original

  1986. language

  1987. it's

  1988. language

  1989. of

  1990. sacrifice

  1991. it's

  1992. the

  1993. language

  1994. of

  1995. Old

  1996. Testament

  1997. sacrifice

  1998. I

  1999. do it

  2000. for you

  2001. remember

  2002. me

  2003. I

  2004. want

  2005. you

  2006. to do

  2007. this

  2008. in the

  2009. future

  2010. I

  2011. want

  2012. you

  2013. use

  2014. plural

  2015. I

  2016. want

  2017. you

  2018. guys

  2019. and

  2020. gals

  2021. to do

  2022. this

  2023. in the

  2024. future

  2025. I'm

  2026. laying

  2027. down

  2028. a

  2029. command

  2030. that

  2031. you

  2032. need

  2033. to

  2034. get

  2035. together

  2036. and

  2037. receive

  2038. what

  2039. I've

  2040. done

  2041. for

  2042. you

  2043. and

  2044. then

  2045. you

  2046. need

  2047. to

  2048. remember

  2049. who

  2050. I am

  2051. and

  2052. what

  2053. I've

  2054. done

  2055. for

  2056. you

  2057. and

  2058. then

  2059. he

  2060. says

  2061. the

  2062. cup

  2063. after

  2064. they

  2065. eaten

  2066. this

  2067. cup

  2068. that

  2069. is

  2070. poured

  2071. out

  2072. for

  2073. you

  2074. is

  2075. the

  2076. new

  2077. covenant

  2078. in

  2079. my

  2080. blood

  2081. and

  2082. there's

  2083. a

  2084. double

  2085. meaning

  2086. here

  2087. he's

  2088. not

  2089. only

  2090. pouring

  2091. out

  2092. the

  2093. blood

  2094. but

  2095. the

  2096. cup

  2097. was

  2098. an

  2099. Old

  2100. Testament

  2101. image

  2102. of

  2103. God's

  2104. wrath

  2105. and

  2106. it's

  2107. as

  2108. if

  2109. God

  2110. comes

  2111. to

  2112. me

  2113. and

  2114. sits

  2115. me

  2116. down

  2117. and

  2118. he

  2119. says

  2120. George

  2121. I'm

  2122. going to

  2123. put

  2124. into

  2125. this

  2126. cup

  2127. every

  2128. you know

  2129. all those

  2130. times

  2131. George

  2132. that you

  2133. had in

  2134. your

  2135. to-do

  2136. list

  2137. I'm

  2138. going to

  2139. enunciate

  2140. them all

  2141. every time

  2142. in your

  2143. to-do

  2144. list

  2145. you said

  2146. pick up

  2147. the

  2148. appetizers

  2149. remember

  2150. to

  2151. slander

  2152. such and

  2153. such a

  2154. person

  2155. and

  2156. have fun

  2157. at a

  2158. party

  2159. every time

  2160. you did

  2161. something

  2162. like that

  2163. I'm

  2164. going to

  2165. put this

  2166. in the

  2167. cup

  2168. I'm

  2169. going to

  2170. put it

  2171. in the

  2172. cup

  2173. every

  2174. time

  2175. you

  2176. used

  2177. your

  2178. judgment

  2179. against

  2180. one

  2181. person

  2182. and you

  2183. gave

  2184. yourself a

  2185. all the

  2186. things

  2187. that you've

  2188. done wrong

  2189. against your

  2190. wife

  2191. against your

  2192. kids

  2193. against your

  2194. parents

  2195. against your

  2196. neighbors

  2197. against your

  2198. church

  2199. I'm going to

  2200. put all of

  2201. that in

  2202. the cup

  2203. and that's

  2204. the cup

  2205. of the

  2206. wrath

  2207. and George

  2208. that's

  2209. your cup

  2210. and you

  2211. got to

  2212. drink it

  2213. and Jesus

  2214. says in

  2215. this

  2216. this cup

  2217. prepared

  2218. for you

  2219. George

  2220. if you

  2221. take this

  2222. cup

  2223. it will

  2224. be the

  2225. end of

  2226. you

  2227. I will

  2228. take this

  2229. cup

  2230. for you

  2231. I will

  2232. drink your

  2233. cup

  2234. I will

  2235. drink

  2236. this

  2237. cup

  2238. for you

  2239. and I

  2240. do it

  2241. for you

  2242. and what

  2243. we see

  2244. on the

  2245. cross

  2246. is the

  2247. result of

  2248. Jesus

  2249. drinking

  2250. my

  2251. cup

  2252. and we

  2253. see him

  2254. suffering

  2255. the result

  2256. of drinking

  2257. your cup

  2258. and you

  2259. know what

  2260. the people

  2261. you see

  2262. on the

  2263. street

  2264. out there

  2265. he drank

  2266. their cup

  2267. too

  2268. they just

  2269. don't know

  2270. about it

  2271. that's why

  2272. people want

  2273. to go to

  2274. China

  2275. it's why

  2276. they want

  2277. to go

  2278. to India

  2279. it's why

  2280. they want

  2281. to go

  2282. to Africa

  2283. it's why

  2284. they want

  2285. to go

  2286. into the

  2287. punk

  2288. community

  2289. and the

  2290. hipster

  2291. community

  2292. and they

  2293. want to

  2294. go into

  2295. the gay

  2296. community

  2297. because

  2298. he drank

  2299. their

  2300. cup

  2301. too

  2302. and that

  2303. that's

  2304. what he

  2305. says

  2306. this cup

  2307. that is

  2308. poured

  2309. out for

  2310. you

  2311. and there's

  2312. a double

  2313. meaning

  2314. is the

  2315. new

  2316. covenant

  2317. in my

  2318. blood

  2319. and the

  2320. covenant

  2321. is a

  2322. relationship

  2323. that God

  2324. creates

  2325. that involves

  2326. him and

  2327. ordinary people

  2328. like you

  2329. and I

  2330. that we

  2331. can enter

  2332. into

  2333. and because

  2334. Jesus drinks

  2335. my cup

  2336. and your

  2337. cup

  2338. and dies

  2339. on the

  2340. cross

  2341. we can

  2342. enter into

  2343. when we

  2344. receive what

  2345. he's done

  2346. for us

  2347. in just

  2348. penitence

  2349. and faith

  2350. we can

  2351. enter into

  2352. a new

  2353. relationship

  2354. with God

  2355. just

  2356. could you

  2357. put up

  2358. one more

  2359. thing

  2360. point

  2361. Andrew

  2362. and then

  2363. we're

  2364. going to

  2365. get to

  2366. some

  2367. practical

  2368. things

  2369. and then

  2370. we'll

  2371. end

  2372. here's

  2373. the

  2374. thing

  2375. Luke

  2376. tells

  2377. the

  2378. real

  2379. story

  2380. of

  2381. the

  2382. real

  2383. God

  2384. acting

  2385. with

  2386. real

  2387. grace

  2388. for

  2389. real

  2390. people

  2391. in

  2392. real

  2393. need

  2394. in

  2395. real

  2396. history

  2397. where

  2398. his

  2399. real

  2400. son

  2401. really

  2402. died

  2403. to

  2404. really

  2405. inaugurate

  2406. a

  2407. real

  2408. covenant

  2409. that I

  2410. can

  2411. really

  2412. enter

  2413. into

  2414. and

  2415. really

  2416. live

  2417. in

  2418. that's

  2419. what

  2420. he

  2421. does

  2422. and

  2423. that's

  2424. what

  2425. we

  2426. remember

  2427. that's

  2428. what

  2429. every

  2430. sermon

  2431. should

  2432. be

  2433. about

  2434. on

  2435. one

  2436. hand

  2437. and

  2438. that's

  2439. what

  2440. we

  2441. remember

  2442. when

  2443. we

  2444. celebrate

  2445. the

  2446. Lord's

  2447. supper

  2448. that

  2449. Luke

  2450. tells

  2451. the

  2452. real

  2453. story

  2454. of

  2455. the

  2456. real

  2457. God

  2458. acting

  2459. with

  2460. real

  2461. grace

  2462. for

  2463. real

  2464. people

  2465. in

  2466. real

  2467. need

  2468. in

  2469. real

  2470. history

  2471. where

  2472. his

  2473. real

  2474. son

  2475. really

  2476. died

  2477. to

  2478. really

  2479. inaugurate

  2480. a

  2481. real

  2482. covenant

  2483. that

  2484. I

  2485. can

  2486. really

  2487. enter

  2488. into

  2489. and

  2490. you

  2491. entered

  2492. that

  2493. have

  2494. you

  2495. recognized

  2496. that

  2497. Jesus

  2498. has

  2499. drank

  2500. the

  2501. cup

  2502. of

  2503. wrath

  2504. that

  2505. you

  2506. deserve

  2507. if

  2508. you

  2509. there's

  2510. no

  2511. better

  2512. time

  2513. than

  2514. today

  2515. to

  2516. have

  2517. Jesus

  2518. as

  2519. your

  2520. savior

  2521. and

  2522. just

  2523. say

  2524. to

  2525. him

  2526. Jesus

  2527. I

  2528. don't

  2529. know

  2530. the

  2531. words

  2532. I

  2533. know

  2534. there's

  2535. supposed

  2536. to

  2537. be

  2538. the

  2539. sinner

  2540. prayer

  2541. and

  2542. you

  2543. know

  2544. I

  2545. can't

  2546. even

  2547. remember

  2548. the

  2549. sinner's

  2550. prayer

  2551. he

  2552. says

  2553. I'm

  2554. a

  2555. sinner

  2556. be

  2557. my

  2558. savior

  2559. you

  2560. say

  2561. that

  2562. there's

  2563. no

  2564. time

  2565. better

  2566. than

  2567. to

  2568. pray

  2569. that

  2570. prayer

  2571. if

  2572. you've

  2573. never

  2574. prayed

  2575. it

  2576. before

  2577. a

  2578. couple

  2579. of

  2580. other

  2581. things

  2582. just

  2583. in

  2584. closing

  2585. like

  2586. what

  2587. how

  2588. do

  2589. we

  2590. live

  2591. in

  2592. light

  2593. of

  2594. this

  2595. first

  2596. thing

  2597. Andrew

  2598. if

  2599. you

  2600. could

  2601. put

  2602. it

  2603. up

  2604. we

  2605. need

  2606. to

  2607. get

  2608. honest

  2609. with

  2610. God

  2611. and

  2612. we

  2613. recognize

  2614. that

  2615. anything

  2616. I

  2617. can

  2618. I

  2619. do

  2620. can

  2621. become

  2622. religious

  2623. or

  2624. spiritual

  2625. and

  2626. then

  2627. work

  2628. to

  2629. immunize

  2630. me

  2631. against

  2632. the

  2633. true

  2634. and

  2635. living

  2636. God

  2637. anything

  2638. I

  2639. do

  2640. can

  2641. become

  2642. religious

  2643. or

  2644. spiritual

  2645. and

  2646. then

  2647. work

  2648. to

  2649. immunize

  2650. me

  2651. against

  2652. the

  2653. true

  2654. and

  2655. living

  2656. God

  2657. anything

  2658. I

  2659. do

  2660. it

  2661. can

  2662. be

  2663. my

  2664. devotions

  2665. it

  2666. can

  2667. be

  2668. church

  2669. it

  2670. can

  2671. be

  2672. good

  2673. things

  2674. like

  2675. caring

  2676. for

  2677. your

  2678. kids

  2679. it

  2680. can

  2681. even

  2682. be

  2683. things

  2684. like

  2685. speaking

  2686. in

  2687. tongues

  2688. it

  2689. can

  2690. become

  2691. a

  2692. way

  2693. to

  2694. immunize

  2695. us

  2696. it

  2697. just

  2698. you

  2699. know

  2700. anything

  2701. the

  2702. problem

  2703. what

  2704. is it

  2705. about

  2706. the

  2707. human

  2708. heart

  2709. that

  2710. it

  2711. can

  2712. plan

  2713. evil

  2714. and

  2715. plan

  2716. good

  2717. and

  2718. feel

  2719. superior

  2720. at

  2721. the

  2722. same

  2723. time

  2724. and

  2725. be

  2726. completely

  2727. and utterly

  2728. blind

  2729. about

  2730. it

  2731. the

  2732. fact

  2733. of

  2734. the

  2735. matter

  2736. is

  2737. that

  2738. every

  2739. good

  2740. thing

  2741. that

  2742. God

  2743. does

  2744. and

  2745. gives

  2746. us

  2747. is

  2748. something

  2749. that

  2750. we

  2751. can

  2752. twist

  2753. and

  2754. we

  2755. can

  2756. break

  2757. and

  2758. we

  2759. can

  2760. pollute

  2761. and

  2762. that's

  2763. why

  2764. we

  2765. just

  2766. have

  2767. to

  2768. start

  2769. to

  2770. be

  2771. honest

  2772. with

  2773. God

  2774. that

  2775. God

  2776. I

  2777. really

  2778. need

  2779. a

  2780. savior

  2781. I

  2782. came

  2783. to

  2784. you

  2785. Jesus

  2786. the

  2787. first

  2788. time

  2789. when

  2790. I

  2791. came

  2792. to

  2793. Jesus

  2794. and

  2795. gave

  2796. my

  2797. life

  2798. to

  2799. him

  2800. it

  2801. was

  2802. just

  2803. because

  2804. I

  2805. had

  2806. this

  2807. sense

  2808. of

  2809. needing

  2810. something

  2811. more

  2812. I

  2813. didn't

  2814. really

  2815. understand

  2816. how

  2817. broken

  2818. I

  2819. am

  2820. how

  2821. much

  2822. I

  2823. needed

  2824. a

  2825. savior

  2826. and

  2827. we

  2828. just

  2829. need

  2830. to

  2831. call

  2832. out

  2833. to

  2834. God

  2835. Jesus

  2836. I

  2837. really

  2838. do

  2839. need

  2840. you

  2841. as

  2842. my

  2843. savior

  2844. I

  2845. really

  2846. do

  2847. and

  2848. then

  2849. just

  2850. a

  2851. final

  2852. thing

  2853. if

  2854. you

  2855. could

  2856. put

  2857. up

  2858. the

  2859. final

  2860. slide

  2861. just

  2862. a

  2863. couple

  2864. of

  2865. things

  2866. to

  2867. help

  2868. you

  2869. when

  2870. you

  2871. receive

  2872. communion

  2873. choose

  2874. to

  2875. remember

  2876. that

  2877. Jesus

  2878. died

  2879. to

  2880. reconcile

  2881. you

  2882. to

  2883. the

  2884. living

  2885. God

  2886. me

  2887. to

  2888. the

  2889. living

  2890. God

  2891. we're

  2892. going to

  2893. be

  2894. receiving

  2895. communion

  2896. in a

  2897. few

  2898. minutes

  2899. just

  2900. say

  2901. Jesus

  2902. I

  2903. don't

  2904. know

  2905. I

  2906. have

  2907. problems

  2908. my

  2909. mind

  2910. is

  2911. confused

  2912. I

  2913. am

  2914. really

  2915. angry

  2916. at

  2917. this

  2918. person

  2919. I

  2920. can

  2921. hardly

  2922. focus

  2923. my

  2924. emotions

  2925. aren't

  2926. in line

  2927. Jesus

  2928. I

  2929. just

  2930. want

  2931. to

  2932. be

  2933. honest

  2934. with

  2935. you

  2936. about

  2937. these

  2938. things

  2939. but

  2940. Jesus

  2941. I

  2942. know

  2943. that

  2944. you

  2945. died

  2946. on

  2947. the

  2948. cross

  2949. for

  2950. me

  2951. to

  2952. reconcile

  2953. me

  2954. to

  2955. God

  2956. and

  2957. say

  2958. that

  2959. to

  2960. him

  2961. and

  2962. then

  2963. secondly

  2964. choose

  2965. to

  2966. say

  2967. thank

  2968. you

  2969. to

  2970. Jesus

  2971. for

  2972. who

  2973. he

  2974. is

  2975. and

  2976. what

  2977. he

  2978. did

  2979. and

  2980. choose

  2981. to

  2982. not

  2983. seek

  2984. particular

  2985. emotions

  2986. because

  2987. Canadians

  2988. in

  2989. 2015

  2990. we

  2991. often

  2992. evaluate

  2993. things

  2994. with

  2995. whether

  2996. or

  2997. not

  2998. you

  2999. had

  3000. that

  3001. peaceful

  3002. feeling

  3003. that

  3004. buzz

  3005. feeling

  3006. that

  3007. care

  3008. bear

  3009. feeling

  3010. that

  3011. yearning

  3012. type

  3013. of

  3014. feeling

  3015. I

  3016. don't

  3017. know

  3018. those

  3019. tingles

  3020. down

  3021. the

  3022. spine

  3023. type

  3024. of

  3025. feeling

  3026. and

  3027. if

  3028. we

  3029. don't

  3030. get

  3031. those

  3032. feelings

  3033. it

  3034. wasn't

  3035. a

  3036. very

  3037. good

  3038. communion

  3039. service

  3040. and

  3041. what

  3042. we

  3043. need

  3044. to

  3045. do

  3046. today

  3047. is

  3048. when

  3049. we

  3050. come

  3051. to

  3052. receive

  3053. communion

  3054. say

  3055. Jesus

  3056. I

  3057. don't

  3058. want

  3059. to

  3060. I'm

  3061. supposedly

  3062. remembering

  3063. you

  3064. and

  3065. I'm

  3066. not

  3067. even

  3068. aware

  3069. of

  3070. the

  3071. fact

  3072. that

  3073. I'm

  3074. making

  3075. it

  3076. all

  3077. about

  3078. me

  3079. and

  3080. whether

  3081. I

  3082. feel

  3083. a

  3084. particular

  3085. thing

  3086. and

  3087. so

  3088. Jesus

  3089. please

  3090. help

  3091. me

  3092. just

  3093. to

  3094. completely

  3095. and

  3096. utterly

  3097. put

  3098. to

  3099. death

  3100. any

  3101. demand

  3102. I

  3103. make

  3104. of

  3105. you

  3106. that

  3107. I

  3108. feel

  3109. any

  3110. particular

  3111. way

  3112. when

  3113. I

  3114. come

  3115. to

  3116. remember

  3117. what

  3118. Jesus

  3119. did

  3120. for

  3121. me

  3122. on

  3123. the

  3124. cross

  3125. and

  3126. then

  3127. finally

  3128. choose

  3129. to

  3130. leave

  3131. it

  3132. up

  3133. God

  3134. does

  3135. something

  3136. in

  3137. this

  3138. transaction

  3139. and

  3140. maybe

  3141. the

  3142. thing

  3143. he'll

  3144. do

  3145. will

  3146. be

  3147. an

  3148. act

  3149. of

  3150. courage

  3151. that

  3152. helps

  3153. you

  3154. in

  3155. six

  3156. years

  3157. time

  3158. and

  3159. when

  3160. you

  3161. get

  3162. to

  3163. heaven

  3164. and

  3165. you

  3166. might

  3167. say

  3168. God

  3169. I'm

  3170. so

  3171. mad

  3172. I

  3173. came

  3174. to

  3175. communion

  3176. that

  3177. day

  3178. on

  3179. April

  3180. or

  3181. whatever

  3182. it

  3183. is

  3184. today

  3185. 26

  3186. 2015

  3187. I

  3188. had a

  3189. terrible

  3190. emotional

  3191. experience

  3192. I

  3193. didn't

  3194. get

  3195. anything

  3196. out

  3197. of

  3198. communion

  3199. and

  3200. then

  3201. God

  3202. just

  3203. says

  3204. oh

  3205. yeah

  3206. that

  3207. act

  3208. of

  3209. courage

  3210. that

  3211. you

  3212. just

  3213. did

  3214. five

  3215. years

  3216. later

  3217. that

  3218. that

  3219. was

  3220. grace

  3221. that

  3222. came

  3223. from

  3224. communion

  3225. then

  3226. like

  3227. why

  3228. do

  3229. you

  3230. think

  3231. I

  3232. have

  3233. to

  3234. give

  3235. you

  3236. something

  3237. right

  3238. that

  3239. instant

  3240. I'm

  3241. God

  3242. I

  3243. got

  3244. this

  3245. I

  3246. got

  3247. this

  3248. covered

  3249. I

  3250. have

  3251. it

  3252. figured

  3253. out

  3254. give

  3255. up

  3256. control

  3257. George

  3258. stop

  3259. thinking

  3260. you're

  3261. God

  3262. George

  3263. let

  3264. me

  3265. be

  3266. God

  3267. in

  3268. your

  3269. life

  3270. transform

  3271. communion

  3272. if

  3273. you

  3274. do

  3275. these

  3276. four

  3277. simple

  3278. things

  3279. choose

  3280. to

  3281. leave

  3282. it

  3283. up

  3284. to

  3285. God

  3286. as

  3287. to

  3288. how

  3289. you

  3290. will

  3291. benefit

  3292. from

  3293. receiving

  3294. communion

  3295. then

  3296. really

  3297. there

  3298. was

  3299. one

  3300. more

  3301. I

  3302. can't

  3303. do

  3304. this

  3305. help

  3306. me

  3307. Jesus

  3308. help

  3309. me

  3310. I'm

  3311. so

  3312. weak

  3313. I

  3314. forget

  3315. help

  3316. me

  3317. Lord

  3318. have

  3319. mercy

  3320. please

  3321. stand

  3322. just

  3323. bow

  3324. our heads

  3325. in

  3326. prayer

  3327. father

  3328. father

  3329. father

  3330. if

  3331. there's

  3332. any

  3333. here

  3334. who've

  3335. called

  3336. out

  3337. to

  3338. you

  3339. for

  3340. the

  3341. first

  3342. time

  3343. I'm

  3344. a

  3345. sinner

  3346. you're

  3347. a

  3348. savior

  3349. please

  3350. be

  3351. my

  3352. savior

  3353. and

  3354. never

  3355. let

  3356. me

  3357. go

  3358. father

  3359. I

  3360. ask

  3361. that

  3362. your

  3363. holy

  3364. spirit

  3365. would

  3366. just

  3367. flood

  3368. into

  3369. that

  3370. person

  3371. and

  3372. seal

  3373. him

  3374. or

  3375. her

  3376. for

  3377. yourself

  3378. and

  3379. and

  3380. keep

  3381. them

  3382. yours

  3383. and

  3384. just

  3385. launch

  3386. them

  3387. in

  3388. a

  3389. new

  3390. covenant

  3391. life

  3392. a new

  3393. relationship

  3394. with

  3395. you

  3396. father

  3397. we

  3398. thank

  3399. you

  3400. for

  3401. Jesus

  3402. we

  3403. thank

  3404. you

  3405. that

  3406. he

  3407. drank

  3408. the

  3409. cup

  3410. that

  3411. was

  3412. poured

  3413. out

  3414. for

  3415. us

  3416. we

  3417. thank

  3418. you

  3419. for

  3420. his

  3421. death

  3422. upon

  3423. the

  3424. cross

  3425. we

  3426. thank

  3427. you

  3428. that

  3429. he

  3430. is

  3431. the

  3432. savior

  3433. we

  3434. thank

  3435. you

  3436. that

  3437. he

  3438. is

  3439. Jewish

  3440. that

  3441. he

  3442. is

  3443. a

  3444. Jewish

  3445. man

  3446. dying

  3447. on

  3448. the

  3449. cross

  3450. for

  3451. the

  3452. world

  3453. that

  3454. he

  3455. is

  3456. your

  3457. son

  3458. father

  3459. we

  3460. thank

  3461. you

  3462. for

  3463. Jesus

  3464. help

  3465. us

  3466. to

  3467. never

  3468. be

  3469. ashamed

  3470. of

  3471. Jesus

  3472. gripped

  3473. by

  3474. the

  3475. gospel

  3476. living

  3477. for

  3478. your

  3479. glory

  3480. father

  3481. this

  3482. is

  3483. the

  3484. cry

  3485. of

  3486. our

  3487. heart

  3488. and

  3489. we

  3490. ask

  3491. this

  3492. in

  3493. the

  3494. name

  3495. of

  3496. Jesus

  3497. your

  3498. son

  3499. and

  3500. our

  3501. savior

  3502. amen
