  1. May the words of my lips and the meditations of all our hearts be acceptable in thy sight,

  2. O Lord, our strength and our Redeemer. Amen.

  3. Well, dear friends, it's a joy and an honor to be back at Church of the Messiah.

  4. And it's always a great joy to have the privilege of opening God's Word,

  5. which is what I would like to do at this time.

  6. The focus of this sermon will be Acts 8, 26-40,

  7. which was the first scripture reading which was read.

  8. This morning.

  9. I know that you in your sermon times have been making your way through the Gospel of Luke.

  10. I'm a big fan of Luke.

  11. He's a good guy.

  12. And I love the Gospel of Luke.

  13. And I love the second edition of Luke, which is the Acts of the Apostles.

  14. The first is what Jesus began to say and to teach and to do,

  15. which he puts in an orderly fashion, which he made sure.

  16. Luke 1, verse 4, he makes it clear the accuracy and the faithfulness of what he conveys to this guy, Theophilus.

    Luke 1:4

  17. But in the Acts of the Apostles, he continues the story.

  18. And in the first chapter, there is the account of those 40-day period between the resurrection of Jesus and his ascension.

  19. Soon we'll be celebrating the ascension of Jesus.

  20. And we are in this period of time right now.

  21. And one of the things which is very clear about the resurrection of Jesus in that period

  22. is that Jesus pounded away with his followers on what we know as the Great Commission.

  23. So, for instance, you have in all four Gospels a very distinct but consistent account of what we call the Great Commission.

  24. Matthew 28, 19-20.

  25. Mark 16, 15.

  26. Luke 24, 45-48.

  27. John 20, 21.

  28. And then Acts 1, 8 is the account of Jesus in a conversation with the apostles

  29. in which they're asking the question,

  30. when are you going to come back?

  31. When are you going to set up your kingdom?

  32. And he, interestingly, kind of deflects the question and says this.

  33. He said to them,

  34. Verse 7,

  35. And it's not for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.

  36. But here's what we're heading for.

  37. Acts 1, verse 8.

    Acts 1:8

  38. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you,

  39. and you will be my witness.

  40. Witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth.

  41. Now, of course, Pentecost is the time when we realize that in fulfillment of the promise of old,

  42. and here in Acts 1, 8,

  43. when Jesus, the Holy Spirit was poured out on all the followers,

  44. that 120 in the upper room.

  45. And why was the Holy Spirit given?

  46. Primarily, it was equipped them to be witnesses to Jesus.

  47. Now, the question is,

  48. what form did that take?

  49. How was it possible for the witnesses of this cluster of 120 people

  50. to begin to take the world for Christ?

  51. How did it work from Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria,

  52. to the uttermost parts of the earth?

  53. Well, you might expect that there would have been the best minds coming together,

  54. coming up with a well-reasoned strategy

  55. in which there are a five-year plan, a 10-year plan,

  56. a 15-year plan,

  57. in which they would have training

  58. and all sorts of things to make sure

  59. that the witness is going out in an orderly fashion

  60. to do exactly what it is that Jesus said.

  61. Well, I'm sorry to say that, in fact,

  62. that's not the picture that Luke gives in the Acts of the Apostles.

  63. Apostles.

  64. It's actually, from our viewpoint, pretty haphazard.

  65. But from the viewpoint of the Holy Spirit,

  66. the trajectory is clear.

  67. Now, what is interesting from my viewpoint,

  68. in terms of this today,

  69. is that, in fact,

  70. more often than not,

  71. things were going badly.

  72. More often than not,

  73. there were afflictions, difficulties,

  74. persecutions,

  75. imprisonments,

  76. all the bad things

  77. that you would think would be a hindrance

  78. to this witness going forward.

  79. Acts 3.

  80. Here they are in Jerusalem.

  81. Peter and John went to pray.

  82. A man is healed,

  83. and there's a great furor.

  84. He was walking and leaping and praising God.

  85. And then Peter,

  86. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  87. unlike before when he denied Jesus,

  88. now he proclaimed,

  89. this is all about Jesus.

  90. Witness to Jesus.

  91. This is all about Jesus.

  92. You know, the Jesus whom you crucified,

  93. but God raised from the dead.

  94. And so, there was a great turning,

  95. it says, by Acts 4,

  96. in terms of the Gospel.

  97. And by Acts 4, verse 4,

    Acts 4:4

  98. there were 5,000 men,

  99. which means there were more likely

  100. around 10,000 people who were believers.

  101. Look at the trajectory from Acts 1, 15, 120,

  102. Acts 2, 23, 3,000,

  103. Acts 4, verse 4, 10,000.

    Acts 4:4

  104. It's incredible.

  105. But so far, all in Jerusalem.

  106. Now what is interesting is that there was a rest,

  107. they were given a hard time,

  108. did Peter, was he cowed by all this?

  109. Not at all.

  110. In fact, he reminded them,

  111. this is all about Jesus whom you crucified,

  112. that God raised from the dead.

  113. As a matter of fact,

  114. there is no other name under heaven

  115. by which men may be saved.

  116. So they didn't know what to do with them.

  117. They kicked them out,

  118. gave them a stern warning

  119. not to ever talk about Jesus.

  120. And did they say,

  121. phew, we got, you know,

  122. we made it.

  123. Let's keep our head down.

  124. This witnessing thing

  125. is getting us in big trouble.

  126. Instead of that,

  127. it says in Acts 4, 29,

  128. And now, Lord,

  129. they prayed,

  130. look upon their threats,

  131. and grant to your servants

  132. to continue to speak your word

  133. with all boldness.

  134. Interestingly,

  135. they didn't pray so much

  136. for their protection.

  137. I'm sure they were calling out

  138. for God's protection.

  139. But they were confident

  140. in the sovereign purposes of God

  141. that that was not the critical issue.

  142. The real issue

  143. was whether they would be bold

  144. in their witness

  145. in fulfillment of Acts 1, 8.

  146. And so what they prayed

  147. was that even in the midst

  148. of setbacks

  149. and threats

  150. and difficulties,

  151. Lord,

  152. make us bold.

  153. Acts 5,

  154. there's kind of the amusing situation

  155. by verse 17

  156. where the leaders

  157. are jealous

  158. of what's going on,

  159. so they arrest them again.

  160. They throw them in prison,

  161. but an angel opens the door,

  162. and instead of them

  163. scuttling home

  164. and keeping their head down

  165. so that this will never happen again,

  166. the angel says,

  167. go into the temple courts

  168. and preach.

  169. So that's what they did.

  170. And there's this,

  171. in my view,

  172. amusing picture

  173. of this great Sanhedrin court

  174. waiting for these folk

  175. who are in such big trouble

  176. to be dragged in before them,

  177. and they waited for them

  178. to be dragged in,

  179. and those who were the authority

  180. went to get them,

  181. and there was nobody in prison.

  182. They ended up going to the courts,

  183. and they found them there,

  184. and then they brought them in.

  185. But by then,

  186. the damage was being done.

  187. Finally,

  188. they beat these men,

  189. though there was nothing wrong

  190. other than them naming

  191. the name of Jesus.

  192. And when they were released,

  193. verse 41 and 42 of Acts 5 says,

  194. then they left the presence

  195. of the council rejoicing,

  196. and they were counted worthy

  197. to suffer dishonor for the name.

  198. And every day in the temple,

  199. and from house to house,

  200. they did not cease teaching

  201. and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

  202. Power to be witnesses,

  203. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria.

  204. So far, we're still in Jerusalem,

  205. but this is bold witnessing

  206. in the midst of many setbacks.

  207. Acts 6 gives the account of conflict

  208. within the fellowship.

  209. The Hellenist widows

  210. are not being looked after

  211. as well as the Jerusalem widows,

  212. and so as a result of that,

  213. there's a problem.

  214. The apostles make the conclusion

  215. they're to turn their attention

  216. to prayer and to preaching,

  217. and therefore they assign seven

  218. who were Hellenists,

  219. who were filled with the Holy Spirit

  220. and wisdom,

  221. who had gifts of administration

  222. to take over.

  223. Two of them, you know,

  224. they're named Stephen and Philip.

  225. And Stephen, by the end of Acts 7,

  226. is martyred,

  227. this mighty man of God,

  228. simply for witnessing.

  229. Bold witness can get you to trouble,

  230. but the gospel goes forward.

  231. And so it is in Acts 8, verse 1,

    Acts 8:1

  232. and this is all by way of background

  233. to getting to Acts 28, verse 26,

    Acts 28:26

  234. so I hope you're staying with me.

  235. What we're trying to think about

  236. is the sovereign purposes of God.

  237. When you want to be a bold witness for Jesus,

  238. you're on a path with those

  239. that we're reading about

  240. in the Acts of the Apostles.

  241. You're in good company,

  242. and you are in line

  243. with the mighty arm of God at work.

  244. What you don't have

  245. is a guarantee

  246. that there will never be difficulties

  247. in your life.

  248. You don't have that promise.

  249. So it is that Acts 8, verse 1 says,

    Acts 8:1

  250. And Saul approved of his execution,

  251. that's Stephen's,

  252. and there arose on that day

  253. a great persecution

  254. against the church in Jerusalem.

  255. That was a dark day.

  256. And they were all scattered

  257. throughout the regions

  258. of Judea and Samaria.

  259. Does this sound familiar?

  260. Judea, Samaria,

  261. to the uttermost parts of the earth.

  262. Judea and Samaria,

  263. except the apostles.

  264. Devout men buried Stephen

  265. and made great lamentation over him.

  266. But Saul,

  267. this is Saul of Tarsus,

  268. was ravaging the church

  269. and entering house after house.

  270. He dragged off men and women

  271. and committed them to prison.

  272. Now those who were scattered,

  273. verse 4 of Acts 8,

  274. went about preaching the word.

  275. Instead of furtively running

  276. from bush to bush,

  277. making sure that nobody's following them,

  278. instead of that,

  279. these guys, yes,

  280. they're leaving Jerusalem

  281. because that was the wise thing to do.

  282. The apostles made it clear

  283. that that's what they should do.

  284. But as they're going,

  285. they're gossiping the gospel.

  286. And now they're in Samaria.

  287. And the crowds,

  288. with one accord,

  289. paid attention

  290. to what was being said by Philip

  291. when they heard him

  292. and saw the signs that he did.

  293. For unclean spirits,

  294. crying out with a loud voice,

  295. came out of many who had them.

  296. And many who were paralyzed

  297. or lame were healed.

  298. So there was much joy in that city.

  299. You may or may not know

  300. that one of the churches in Annick,

  301. the Annick Network in Canada,

  302. named its name based on this verse.

  303. It's Celebration Church in Barrie, Ontario.

  304. And they are praying,

  305. and when they had what they called

  306. their hard launch,

  307. looking out over the lake

  308. in this great, you know,

  309. medium-sized city north of Toronto,

  310. with all the pastors around them.

  311. They commissioned Brian McVitie,

  312. who is our Annick priest,

  313. and they prayed

  314. that there would be joy in the city

  315. because of the gospel being received.

  316. They were praying for bold witness,

  317. and that's what we pray.

  318. Well, there was a great turning in Samaria,

  319. and this is so exciting.

  320. Do you remember the Good Samaritan?

  321. Do you remember what happened in 77,

  322. 22 BC, and so on?

  323. The North Kingdom and the South Kingdom.

  324. Largely, the North Kingdom was lost

  325. and dark and in trouble

  326. as you follow the trail of the Old Testament.

  327. So for now,

  328. for little old Philip,

  329. the administrator guy

  330. who had a gift

  331. by the Holy Spirit also preaching,

  332. who makes his way fleeing

  333. from the authorities in Jerusalem

  334. and speaks about Christ,

  335. isn't it exciting

  336. that in the purposes of God,

  337. the gospel came to Samaria,

  338. and there was a great turning,

  339. and there was joy in the city.

  340. Do you remember in Genesis 50,

  341. when Joseph was with his brothers

  342. after their father had died,

  343. and his brothers,

  344. who had tried to kill Joseph before,

  345. sell him to slavery,

  346. they were now worried,

  347. and they said,

  348. tell, you know,

  349. you should know that our father said,

  350. be nice to us.

  351. That's my paraphrase.

  352. That's not actually what it says

  353. exactly in the scriptures.

  354. You look up Genesis 50.

  355. But Joseph was very clear.

  356. He was gracious,

  357. but he was clear,

  358. and he said,

  359. as for you, brothers,

  360. you meant evil against me,

  361. but God meant it for good,

  362. to preserve many people alive.

  363. See, that's the amazing thing

  364. of the sovereign God we serve.

  365. He has many means

  366. of bringing about his purposes.

  367. He can even use the sin of man

  368. as the means of bringing about his purposes.

  369. Exhibit A, the cross.

  370. Satan and all mankind

  371. thought they were dealing with

  372. the Son of God,

  373. the one good man,

  374. the sinless one.

  375. Get rid of him,

  376. and he'll be gone.

  377. And so they nailed him to a cross.

  378. They got their way.

  379. But what they didn't know

  380. was that, in fact,

  381. that's the means

  382. through which salvation comes

  383. to the whole world.

  384. This is the God whom we serve.

  385. And this is the God that Philip served.

  386. And this is the God that you serve.

  387. And so it is

  388. that they were in Samaria

  389. on this great turning,

  390. but by verse 26,

  391. amazingly,

  392. Philip is yanked

  393. out of the revival of Samaria

  394. to go to one man

  395. in the desert.

  396. Is that not crazy?

  397. This is the Lord we serve.

  398. He worries about the individual,

  399. and he sees through the one

  400. nations being raised.

  401. So it is

  402. that it says in verse 26,

  403. Now an angel of the Lord

  404. said to Philip,

  405. Rise and go toward the south

  406. to the road that goes

  407. from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  408. This is a desert place.

  409. And he rose and went.

  410. I'm amazed at this guy.

  411. I would have thought,

  412. bad decision,

  413. maybe sometime,

  414. but right now

  415. I'm kind of busy

  416. with the revival,

  417. you know,

  418. and so there's a lot of things

  419. going on here, Lord.

  420. Lord,

  421. that might have been

  422. the lines of my prayer.

  423. And maybe Philip

  424. prayed that prayer too.

  425. But at the end of the day,

  426. he heard the angel of the Lord.

  427. And what that is,

  428. the angel of the Lord,

  429. as opposed to verse 29,

  430. which is the spirit of the Lord,

  431. I'm not sure.

  432. I think it's the same.

  433. It's God speaking to him

  434. by a means which he knew

  435. it was God.

  436. So what we're thinking about,

  437. friends,

  438. is what does

  439. the witnessing

  440. of the Holy Spirit

  441. as in Acts 1-8

  442. look like

  443. in a person?

  444. When you see

  445. bold witnessing

  446. personified,

  447. what are some of the qualities

  448. or characteristics?

  449. That's what we're looking at

  450. when we look at Acts 26-40.

  451. We're seeing a man

  452. who is a bold witness.

  453. Number one,

  454. now the angel of the Lord

  455. said to Philip,

  456. rise and go.

  457. And verse 27,

  458. he rose and went.

  459. Verse 29,

  460. and the spirit of the Lord

  461. said to Philip,

  462. go over and join this chariot.

  463. So Philip ran to him.

  464. Remember,

  465. we're in the desert.

  466. It's hot out there.

  467. What we see here

  468. is a man

  469. who's a witness,

  470. which means he's in contact

  471. with the living God

  472. and he's learned to obey.

  473. If you want to be

  474. a bold witness,

  475. you need to

  476. be connected

  477. to the vine

  478. and then allow

  479. the message

  480. of the Holy Spirit

  481. to come to you.

  482. You're listening carefully

  483. and you've learned

  484. to bend your will

  485. even though

  486. all your instincts

  487. say,

  488. bad idea.

  489. That person's not

  490. going to want to hear

  491. from me.

  492. They're going to laugh

  493. me out of the room,

  494. etc.

  495. And yet,

  496. the Spirit of God

  497. says,

  498. go over there,

  499. talk to that person.

  500. They need to hear

  501. about Jesus.

  502. Philip,

  503. number one,

  504. was in contact

  505. with God

  506. and learned to obey.

  507. Secondly,

  508. he was a servant.

  509. That's the posture

  510. of the Christian.

  511. For even the Son of Man

  512. came not to be served,

  513. but to serve

  514. and to give his life

  515. as a ransom for many.

  516. When we're connected

  517. to Jesus the vine,

  518. we find ourselves

  519. automatically

  520. in that relationship

  521. to everything around us

  522. and everyone around us.

  523. We're here only

  524. as a servant,

  525. as he is the servant

  526. of the world.

  527. And so it is

  528. that Philip was available

  529. and enthusiastic.

  530. And so it is,

  531. he ran up.

  532. And what did he do?

  533. He said,

  534. he listened,

  535. says,

  536. so Philip ran up to him

  537. and heard him reading

  538. Isaiah the prophet

  539. and asked,

  540. do you understand

  541. what you're reading?

  542. And he said,

  543. how can I

  544. unless someone guides me?

  545. This is a servant.

  546. It wasn't,

  547. I just happened

  548. to have a talk,

  549. Ethiopian eunuch,

  550. which I'd like to drop

  551. on you at this time

  552. because I've gone

  553. to all this trouble

  554. to come into the desert

  555. and you're going to listen.

  556. He was listening

  557. to what the Spirit of God

  558. was obviously doing

  559. and he was making

  560. himself available.

  561. To be a bold witness

  562. is to be a servant

  563. who's enthusiastically

  564. available to the people

  565. that God leads you to.

  566. Thirdly,

  567. he knew the word.

  568. It says,

  569. and he said,

  570. how can I

  571. unless someone guides me?

  572. And he invited Philip

  573. to come up

  574. and sit with him.

  575. Now the passage

  576. of scripture

  577. that he was reading

  578. was this,

  579. like a shepherd

  580. he was led to the slaughter

  581. and like a lamb

  582. before its shears

  583. is silent

  584. so he opens

  585. not his mouth.

  586. In his humiliation

  587. justice was denied him.

  588. Who can describe

  589. that his generation

  590. for his life

  591. is taken away

  592. from the earth?

  593. And maybe

  594. we would think,

  595. gulp,

  596. where in the world

  597. is that?

  598. Yikes,

  599. we're in trouble now Lord.

  600. I don't know where that is.

  601. It seems pretty obscure

  602. to me.

  603. Because the eunuch

  604. went on,

  605. verse 34,

  606. and said,

  607. about whom I ask you

  608. does the prophet

  609. say this?

  610. About himself

  611. or about someone else?

  612. Philip didn't miss a beat

  613. because he knew

  614. the word of God.

  615. He knew the word of God.

  616. Of course it was Isaiah 53.

  617. There's no more

  618. important passage

  619. in understanding

  620. the cross of Christ.

  621. What it was for him

  622. to be the shepherd,

  623. to be the victim,

  624. the sheep that was slain,

  625. the lamb of God.

  626. What it was for the father

  627. righteously

  628. to judge sin

  629. who is the propitiation

  630. for sin.

  631. And then to be satisfied

  632. satisfied

  633. that in fact

  634. it's enough.

  635. All of that

  636. is in Isaiah 53.

  637. So clearly

  638. the spirit of God

  639. was at work here.

  640. But what I want you

  641. to know

  642. is that to be

  643. a bold witness

  644. requires of you

  645. to live in the Bible.

  646. It's interesting

  647. that Paul said

  648. to his young

  649. protege Timothy

  650. in verse 15

  651. of 2 Timothy 3

  652. he says,

  653. start verse 14,

  654. but as for you

  655. continue in what

  656. you have learned

  657. and have firmly believed

  658. knowing from whom

  659. you've learned it

  660. and how from childhood

  661. you have been acquainted

  662. with the sacred writings

  663. the Bible

  664. which are able

  665. to make you

  666. wise for salvation

  667. through faith

  668. in Christ Jesus.

  669. It's the spirit

  670. who gives life

  671. the flesh profits

  672. nothing Jesus said.

  673. The words that I have

  674. spoken to you

  675. are spirit

  676. and life.

  677. For people to come

  678. to saving knowledge

  679. of Jesus

  680. there has to be

  681. a work

  682. of the word

  683. of God

  684. in their lives.

  685. And if you're

  686. to be a witness

  687. that's effective

  688. you have to be

  689. involved in the Bible

  690. so that you can

  691. be used

  692. with the scriptures

  693. to open them up

  694. to the would-be person.

  695. I have a theory

  696. which is not

  697. original to me

  698. but I like it.

  699. Whoever thought of it

  700. I think it's a good idea

  701. that when Philip

  702. approached this

  703. Ethiopian

  704. great court official

  705. but a eunuch

  706. who was a God-fearer

  707. but would have been

  708. excluded from the

  709. inner court of the temple

  710. because he was a eunuch

  711. he I think

  712. would have been thinking

  713. also about Isaiah 56

  714. about a promise

  715. that says this

  716. verse 3

  717. let not the foreigner

  718. who has joined himself

  719. to the Lord say

  720. the Lord will surely

  721. separate me

  722. from his people

  723. and let not the eunuch

  724. say

  725. behold

  726. I am a dry tree

  727. for thus says the Lord

  728. to the eunuchs

  729. who keep my Sabbath

  730. who choose the things

  731. that please me

  732. and hold fast

  733. my covenant

  734. I will give

  735. in my house

  736. and within my walls

  737. a monument

  738. and a name

  739. better than

  740. sons and daughters

  741. this is exciting stuff

  742. you see

  743. in a very real way

  744. Philip had before him

  745. not only an Ethiopian

  746. so the whole world

  747. is before him

  748. but a person

  749. who by rights

  750. was in every way

  751. disqualified

  752. and yet in the gospel

  753. there was everything

  754. there for him

  755. he knew the word

  756. fourthly

  757. and this is the biggie

  758. are you ready

  759. drum roll please

  760. then Philip

  761. opened his mouth

  762. and beginning

  763. with this scripture

  764. he told him

  765. the good news

  766. about Jesus

  767. dear friends

  768. Philip

  769. nailed it

  770. because

  771. he taught him

  772. about Jesus

  773. there would have been

  774. so many things

  775. he could have digressed

  776. and talked about

  777. there could have been

  778. so many things

  779. that he might have found

  780. as sort of preliminary

  781. to it

  782. but what is consistent

  783. about the witness

  784. that you find

  785. in the book of Acts

  786. is that whether it be

  787. Peter

  788. or anyone else

  789. that in fact

  790. they get to Jesus

  791. quickly

  792. and directly

  793. and unabashedly

  794. see

  795. Philip understood

  796. the truth

  797. that there's only

  798. one name

  799. by which a person

  800. could be saved

  801. he understood

  802. the truth

  803. that God loved

  804. the world

  805. so much

  806. that he gave

  807. his son

  808. that whoever

  809. believes in him

  810. should not perish

  811. for God

  812. did not send

  813. the son

  814. into the world

  815. to judge

  816. the world

  817. but that the world

  818. might be saved

  819. through him

  820. and then verse 18

  821. says this

  822. whoever believes

  823. in him

  824. is not condemned

  825. but whoever

  826. does not believe

  827. is condemned already

  828. it's that simple

  829. it's reduced

  830. to one thing

  831. what have you done

  832. with Jesus

  833. and so if he cares

  834. in any way

  835. for this man

  836. he's going to

  837. teach him

  838. the good news

  839. about Jesus

  840. if you're a bold

  841. witness

  842. and I remember

  843. it was actually

  844. I was in a group

  845. where there was

  846. a new person

  847. who was hired

  848. in our diocese

  849. in a time before

  850. to be the evangelism

  851. person for the diocese

  852. and there was a

  853. two hour

  854. presentation

  855. where Jesus' name

  856. was never mentioned

  857. even once

  858. well that's

  859. unthinkable

  860. how can you speak

  861. about the good news

  862. and communicating

  863. the good news

  864. if it's not

  865. all about

  866. Jesus

  867. because he's

  868. the only thing

  869. that saves

  870. Philip got it

  871. right

  872. Jesus said

  873. I am the way

  874. the truth

  875. and the life

  876. no one comes

  877. to father

  878. but by me

  879. John said

  880. he who has

  881. the son

  882. has life

  883. he who has

  884. not the son

  885. of God

  886. has not life

  887. so it is

  888. when

  889. when they

  890. it says

  891. so

  892. as

  893. as they

  894. were going

  895. along

  896. the road

  897. they came

  898. to some

  899. water

  900. and the eunuch

  901. said

  902. see here's

  903. water

  904. what prevents

  905. me from being

  906. baptized

  907. and he

  908. commanded him

  909. to stop

  910. and they both

  911. went down

  912. into the water

  913. Philip and the eunuch

  914. and he baptized

  915. him

  916. and when they

  917. came up

  918. out of the water

  919. the spirit of the

  920. Lord carried

  921. Philip away

  922. and the eunuch

  923. saw him

  924. no more

  925. and went

  926. on his way

  927. rejoicing

  928. recently

  929. just

  930. the

  931. the

  932. predecessor

  933. to the present

  934. bishop of the

  935. arctic

  936. his name

  937. was Bishop

  938. Andrew

  939. the story

  940. of his

  941. conversion

  942. is an

  943. extraordinary

  944. one

  945. I heard

  946. him

  947. give it

  948. once

  949. and

  950. he was

  951. as a young

  952. man of about

  953. 20

  954. because he

  955. spoke English

  956. was used

  957. as a translator

  958. for Marnie

  959. Patterson

  960. Marnie Patterson

  961. was preaching

  962. and he would

  963. say a phrase

  964. and Bishop

  965. Andrew

  966. then just

  967. Andrew

  968. would say

  969. a phrase

  970. and so on

  971. this was the

  972. second night

  973. and Marnie

  974. was doing

  975. his thing

  976. and Andrew

  977. was doing

  978. his thing

  979. and then

  980. suddenly Marnie

  981. said a phrase

  982. and nothing

  983. happened

  984. he said the

  985. phrase again

  986. and nothing

  987. happened

  988. and they

  989. looked over

  990. and there

  991. was the

  992. prayer desk

  993. where people

  994. would come

  995. to pray

  996. and receive

  997. and there

  998. was Andrew

  999. kneeling

  1000. at the

  1001. prayer desk

  1002. and what

  1003. Andrew

  1004. said was

  1005. that he

  1006. suddenly

  1007. realized

  1008. this message

  1009. was for

  1010. him

  1011. and though

  1012. it was

  1013. embarrassing

  1014. he was

  1015. afraid

  1016. if he

  1017. didn't go

  1018. there

  1019. right now

  1020. he might

  1021. never feel

  1022. this way

  1023. again

  1024. and he

  1025. was not

  1026. prepared

  1027. to risk

  1028. salvation

  1029. even

  1030. although

  1031. it was

  1032. tremendously

  1033. humbling

  1034. to break

  1035. up a

  1036. pretty good

  1037. sermon

  1038. by kneeling

  1039. there

  1040. and so

  1041. Marnie

  1042. went over

  1043. and actually

  1044. Andrew's

  1045. wife

  1046. Mary

  1047. they were

  1048. a young

  1049. couple

  1050. she slipped

  1051. in beside

  1052. him

  1053. and the

  1054. two received

  1055. the Lord

  1056. then they

  1057. came back

  1058. and Andrew

  1059. continued in

  1060. his translation

  1061. dear friends

  1062. this is

  1063. what's

  1064. exciting

  1065. about this

  1066. story

  1067. is that in

  1068. fact the

  1069. man understood

  1070. now is the

  1071. time

  1072. now is the

  1073. day of

  1074. salvation

  1075. and Philip

  1076. understood that

  1077. as well

  1078. he didn't

  1079. defer

  1080. didn't hold

  1081. him up

  1082. he knew

  1083. the spirit

  1084. of God

  1085. had brought

  1086. new life

  1087. and they

  1088. sealed the

  1089. deal by

  1090. baptism

  1091. that day

  1092. in the

  1093. water

  1094. in the

  1095. desert

  1096. I made

  1097. a commitment

  1098. to the

  1099. Lord

  1100. early on

  1101. when I

  1102. became a

  1103. bishop

  1104. knowing that

  1105. I would be

  1106. doing lots

  1107. of traveling

  1108. and lots

  1109. of preaching

  1110. in different

  1111. situations

  1112. which is to

  1113. take the

  1114. opportunity

  1115. though I

  1116. would know

  1117. that the

  1118. vast majority

  1119. of people

  1120. that were

  1121. before me

  1122. and maybe

  1123. all in

  1124. some cases

  1125. already know

  1126. the Savior

  1127. of whom

  1128. I speak

  1129. to always

  1130. give an

  1131. invitation

  1132. to acknowledge

  1133. the fact

  1134. that it's

  1135. possible to

  1136. have the

  1137. grace of

  1138. God dangling

  1139. before you

  1140. and to

  1141. leave it

  1142. there

  1143. Paul said

  1144. in 2nd

  1145. Corinthians 6

  1146. don't

  1147. receive the

  1148. God

  1149. allow the

  1150. grace to

  1151. be of

  1152. God to

  1153. be in

  1154. vain

  1155. behold now

  1156. is the

  1157. acceptable

  1158. time

  1159. now is

  1160. the day

  1161. of salvation

  1162. and so

  1163. dear friends

  1164. I throw

  1165. out the

  1166. invitation

  1167. once again

  1168. here at

  1169. Church of

  1170. the Messiah

  1171. as I

  1172. did

  1173. at the

  1174. early

  1175. service

  1176. as well

  1177. but I

  1178. also want

  1179. to say

  1180. to you

  1181. who do

  1182. know

  1183. the

  1184. Lord

  1185. have

  1186. you

  1187. heard

  1188. the

  1189. call

  1190. that

  1191. the

  1192. reason

  1193. you've

  1194. been

  1195. given

  1196. the

  1197. Holy

  1198. Spirit

  1199. is

  1200. to

  1201. equip

  1202. you

  1203. to

  1204. be

  1205. a

  1206. witness

  1207. do

  1208. you

  1209. understand

  1210. that

  1211. you've

  1212. been

  1213. given

  1214. a

  1215. tongue

  1216. a

  1217. tongue

  1218. to

  1219. bring

  1220. glory

  1221. to

  1222. God

  1223. and

  1224. to

  1225. witness

  1226. to

  1227. the

  1228. saving

  1229. power

  1230. of

  1231. Jesus

  1232. are

  1233. you

  1234. in

  1235. active

  1236. contact

  1237. with him

  1238. and

  1239. obedience

  1240. have you

1241. learned to be a servant

  1242. in the environment

1243. and the people around you

1244. are you involved in the word of God

1245. so that it can be used even through you

  1246. to bring people to

1247. the wisdom that leads to salvation

1248. and when you have opportunity

1249. do you go to the goods

  1250. do you preach Jesus

  1251. anything less than that

1252. is to miss the mark

  1253. would you stand

  1254. and let's pray

  1255. Lord Jesus Christ

1256. I thank you for this

  1257. wonderful church

  1258. family

1259. and I thank you for

  1260. everything you're doing here

  1261. and through this

  1262. congregation

  1263. I pray that

  1264. no one

  1265. that you bring

  1266. within the circle

  1267. of influence

  1268. of this church

  1269. would miss out

  1270. that no one

  1271. would receive

  1272. the grace of God

  1273. in vain

  1274. but would

  1275. appropriate it

  1276. by repentance

  1277. and faith

  1278. and even today

  1279. Lord

  1280. if there's anyone here

  1281. who needs to respond

1282. would you hear our prayer

  1283. Lord Jesus

  1284. I know I'm a sinner

1285. I repent of my sin

  1286. would you come

  1287. into my life

  1288. right now

1289. I want to be yours

  1290. forever

  1291. and would you begin

  1292. the process

  1293. of change

  1294. and then one day

  1295. I look forward

  1296. to being with you

  1297. and to be changed

  1298. to be like Jesus

  1299. and Lord

  1300. for this company
