  1. Father, we confess before you that we flatter ourselves too much to detect or hate our own sin.

  2. We confess before you that it could have been our hands that nailed your son's hands to the cross,

  3. that it could have been our mouths which join with the soldiers or the priests in mocking you,

  4. that, Father, we could very well have been these people,

  5. and we could very well, Father, have agreed with everything they did.

  6. So, Father, we confess before you that we flatter ourselves too much to detect or hate our own sin.

  7. We ask, Father, that your Holy Spirit would gently but deeply come upon us,

  8. that your Holy Spirit would gently and deeply move amongst us,

  9. that you would create within us, Father, a pliable, tender hearts

  10. that are receptive and responsive to your word and to the moving of your Holy Spirit,

  11. that you would create within us, Father, a desire to see just how great and full of grace Jesus is

  12. and what he accomplished for us,

  13. and that you would fan into flame within us a deep longing and yearning to follow him,

  14. to obey him, to be available to him, to be more like him,

  15. and to live to bring you glory.

  16. Father, you know that there's things in our hearts that don't want to do any of those things,

  17. so we ask for a mighty work of your Holy Spirit in our midst,

  18. as we read and think about your word and think about your Son.

  19. And this we ask in Jesus' name, your Son and our Savior. Amen.

  20. Please be seated.

  21. Amen.

  22. So, some of you know that I go to Starbucks sometimes.

  23. And so a couple of months ago, a fellow that I've gotten to know in a Starbucks who's a Christian,

  24. he said he wanted to talk to me about a problem that he was having.

  25. And the problem was that about a month earlier, whatever it was,

  26. a group of guys were together, and the guys were joking the way guys joke.

  27. And I'll call them Andy and Bob.

  28. And Andy, completely made up names, okay?

  29. Andy and Bob.

  30. It helps me to remember A and B.

  31. That's why I chose Andy and Bob.

  32. And so Andy, I guess, during the course of them joking around,

  33. said a couple of things that deeply wounded Bob.

  34. And so Bob sent an email a couple of days later.

  35. And in the email, he told Andy that some of the things that Andy had said

  36. had really, really, really cut him to the quick and really hurt him.

  37. And so Andy gets the email.

  38. And I mean, this is what he's telling me, right?

  39. And so Andy gets the email, and he immediately fires off an email back to Bob

  40. and apologizes for what he did.

  41. Said he didn't mean it, didn't mean to hurt it,

  42. but he could see now that it probably did hurt him.

  43. And he asked, you know, he said, I'm really, really sorry.

  44. You know, can we maybe talk about this?

  45. Because I want to be friends.

  46. Bob responded that he'd been hurt too deeply to forgive Andy.

  47. And you know the way these things go.

  48. This has probably happened to you.

  49. Bob didn't just leave it like that.

  50. But Bob added a couple of zingers about Andy,

  51. about what Andy's character was like and how Andy acted.

  52. And Andy, he got this zinger back, and he was hurt by it,

  53. but he decided that he would just reiterate his apology

  54. and not respond to the zingers.

  55. And so he fired back an email again,

  56. and once again just reiterating that he was really sorry.

  57. He wouldn't do it again.

  58. He hoped he'd never do it again.

  59. Could they talk?

  60. Bob sent back another email after a little while,

  61. saying, no, I don't want to talk.

  62. You've really hurt me.

  63. I'm really angry at you still.

  64. And then, of course, Bob added a couple of extra zingers.

  65. And this went on for a little while.

  66. Bob not answering the phone call, Andy leaving messages.

  67. And so Andy asked me what he should do.

  68. The gospel text that we just looked at,

  69. just read a couple of moments ago,

  70. has a lot of very interesting things to teach us

  71. about this particular situation.

  72. And all of us have probably been in similar types of situations.

  73. If we're honest, sometimes we've been the Andy,

  74. and sometimes we've been the Bob.

  75. So it would be a great help to me if you would open your Bibles,

  76. and let's just look at this story

  77. and see what the story of the death of Jesus upon the cross

  78. and his burial have to teach us about this story that I've just told you,

  79. a true story about Andy and Bob.

  80. And so we're going to begin reading it.

  81. It's Luke chapter 23, if you've forgotten what the text was,

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  82. and we're going to begin reading it, the 26th verse.

  83. And what's just happened before,

  84. if you remember from two weeks ago,

  85. is three weeks ago we looked at how the Jewish leadership

  86. did an inquiry into Jesus.

  87. They came to the conclusion.

  88. They already knew.

  89. They were just looking for evidence to get him guilty of something

  90. that would be a capital offense.

  91. And then two weeks ago we looked at the inquiry of Pilate and Herod,

  92. and Pilate and Herod had concluded that Jesus was innocent.

  93. He was sort of very foolish and impractical, but he was innocent.

  94. But because of utilitarian ethics, which, by the way,

  95. is what most Canadians practice and how they understand right and wrong,

  96. but by utilitarian ethics they decided it was a lot easier just to have Jesus die.

  97. Pilate decided it was a lot easier for Jesus to die

  98. than to have all the other problems.

  99. And so that's where the story continues in verse 26.

  100. And as they led Jesus away,

  101. they seized one Simon of Cyrene,

  102. who was coming in from the country,

  103. and laid on him the cross to carry it behind Jesus.

  104. Just sort of pause there for a very little second.

  105. Simon's from Africa.

  106. Just so you know, Simon's from Africa.

  107. So it's an African who carries the cross beam for Jesus the rest of the way

  108. to this place of the skull.

  109. Verse 27.

  110. And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women

  111. who were mourning and lamenting for Jesus.

  112. But turning to them, Jesus said,

  113. Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me,

  114. but weep for yourselves and for your children.

  115. For behold, the days are coming when they will say,

  116. Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore

  117. and the breasts that never nursed.

  118. Then they will begin to say to the mountains,

  119. Fall on us and to the hills, cover us.

  120. For if they do these things when the wood is green,

  121. what will happen when it is dry?

  122. And just sort of pause, keep your finger here for a second.

  123. Some of you might, if you know the Bible very well,

  124. you can hear echoes of the book of Revelation there,

  125. and you can hear echoes of different Old Testament texts in there.

  126. But the thing I just wanted to do as we pause

  127. is that this prediction of Jesus comes true

  128. 33 to 36 years after he speaks it.

  129. And it's 33 to 36 because it's not clear

  130. whether Jesus is crucified in the year 30 or the year 33.

  131. There's evidence that can go both ways.

  132. But what we do know is that in the year 66,

  133. the war of the Jews against the Romans began.

  134. And it was to be interrupted, but it was to go over four years.

  135. And the Jewish people were to lose that war very badly.

  136. The city of Jerusalem would eventually be completely and utterly destroyed.

  137. Over a million Jewish people would die in the war

  138. and over 100,000 would be taken into slavery

  139. and spread across the empire.

  140. And so the words of Jesus are fulfilled 33 to 36 years

  141. after he speaks them.

  142. Now, just before we sort of keep reading,

  143. one of the things you've already maybe noticed

  144. is that there's, Luke seems to leave some stuff out of his gospel.

  145. And maybe it's a little,

  146. and I know sometimes when I talk to people in places like Starbucks

  147. and all about the Bible,

  148. they'll mention how the different accounts in the gospel

  149. seem to contradict each other.

  150. I just want to say to you that Luke does leave things out

  151. that others talk about,

  152. but there's actually no contradictions.

  153. It would be another talk,

  154. like maybe a Saturday morning or an evening exercise

  155. to take the four different historical records

  156. of the death of Jesus, his crucifixion,

  157. and show you how there's different types of narratives

  158. that all would equally put all of the verses together.

  159. But Luke, just because of the way he's telling his story,

  160. he chooses to bring certain things in and leave others out.

  161. So, for instance, he leaves out that Jesus began by carrying the cross.

  162. He leaves out that Jesus had been scourged and stuff like that.

  163. But that's just quite normal.

  164. Yesterday, there was about nine or ten of us who were involved,

  165. or eleven of us, who were involved in the big give in Ottawa.

  166. And if afterwards you were to talk to a couple of us about what happened,

  167. we all wouldn't tell you the exact same thing.

  168. We're all there.

  169. None of us are lying.

  170. None of us are hiding anything.

  171. None of us are trying to create contradictions.

  172. But we didn't get together and we'd just tell you different things.

  173. Maybe the things from our perception that were the most telling

  174. or the most interesting thing about the day.

  175. And that's what happens here with the four historical writers.

  176. Luke has the particular points that he wants to bring out.

  177. And so that's why we see some differences in the different accounts.

  178. But it's been known for 1,800, 1,900 years,

  179. Christians have effortlessly put these different bits and pieces together

  180. to make different types of, to make a narrative that makes sense.

  181. So, you know, you don't have to be worried about it

  182. because we're about to come to something that only Luke records.

  183. All four of the historical records of the death of Jesus

  184. all mention that he was crucified between two criminals.

  185. But only Luke is to record what we next see in verse 39,

  186. or sorry, verse 32.

  187. Two others who were criminals were led away to be put to death with Jesus.

  188. And when they came to the place that is called the skull,

  189. there they crucified him and the criminals,

  190. one on his right and one on his left.

  191. And Jesus said, Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.

  192. And just sort of pause there for a second.

  193. We're going to actually spend a good part of this sermon

  194. looking just at that verse, that little part of a verse.

  195. But, you know, what I'm going to do,

  196. I want us to see the whole story because, you know,

  197. one of the things which people who have maybe been involved

  198. in more conservative types of Christian churches,

  199. and then they leave, maybe to just become spiritual,

  200. I shouldn't say just, to become spiritual but not religious,

  201. or to become part of a church which practices more a residual form of Christianity

  202. rather than full, vibrant Christianity.

  203. They'll often complain that Christians take things out of context.

  204. And so what I want to do is,

  205. even though we're going to spend a good chunk of time

  206. meditating upon these words of Jesus upon the cross,

  207. I want us to see the full context,

  208. the full story of what happened,

  209. so that when we come back and we spend some time meditating upon these few words,

  210. Father, forgive them for they know not what they do,

  211. we can, in a sense, grasp the full power of it

  212. and see that I'm not going to say anything that is out of context with the text.

  213. So we'll see that again.

  214. Verse 34,

  215. And Jesus said,

  216. Father, forgive them for they know not what they do,

  217. and they cast lots to divide his garments.

  218. And just pause.

  219. The implication of this text is that Jesus was crucified naked.

  220. In other words, this picture here is wrong.

  221. Wrong.

  222. Jesus also probably didn't have blonde hair,

  223. and he was probably pretty hairy.

  224. But, you know, apart from that,

  225. he was probably crucified naked

  226. because part of the whole purpose of crucifixion

  227. was not only to create a very, very horrible form of death,

  228. but the reason it was reserved to slaves in the lowest orders in the Roman Empires

  229. is because it was to humiliate the person as much as possible.

  230. Verse 35,

  231. And the people stood by watching,

  232. but the rulers scoffed at him, saying,

  233. He saved others.

  234. Let him save himself,

  235. if he is the Christ of God, his chosen one.

  236. The soldiers also mocked him,

  237. coming up and offering him sour wine.

  238. In other words, they present him wine as if he's a king, you know,

  239. and saying,

  240. If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.

  241. There was also an inscription over him.

  242. This is the king of the Jews.

  243. And you see that the Jewish leaders mock him

  244. because he claims to be the Messiah,

  245. and the soldiers mock him because he claims to be a king,

  246. as if there could be any king

  247. that can defy the emperor,

  248. the great Caesar, who is also a god.

  249. And we see that Jesus dies upon the cross

  250. as the king of the Jews.

  251. Just to reiterate something I said very briefly two weeks ago,

  252. no Christian should ever be anti-Semitic

  253. because a Christian has given

  254. his or her life

  255. to the king of the Jews.

  256. No Christian should ever have

  257. any anti-Semitism in their life

  258. because we give ourselves

  259. to the king of the Jews.

  260. That's how he dies.

  261. So,

  262. we're about now to see something

  263. as we start to read the next few verses

  264. as we go into

  265. verse 39.

  266. There's some gruesome images

  267. sort of just very, very briefly,

  268. you know, put into the text.

  269. It's a very, very simple word

  270. that actually is a very gruesome image.

  271. It's verse 39.

  272. One of the criminals who are hanged

  273. railed at him.

  274. This is just reminding us

  275. that Jesus is literally

  276. hanging from the wood.

  277. And he's not hanging from the wood

  278. because he's gripping it with his hands

  279. and hanging,

  280. but the nails

  281. have been put just

  282. underneath,

  283. sort of there.

  284. And he's literally

  285. hanging from the cross

  286. because the nails

  287. are holding him there.

  288. So,

  289. in the next little bit

  290. as we,

  291. it's part of the thing

  292. which is so striking

  293. about the text

  294. is that one man

  295. who's also hanging,

  296. hanging by nails

  297. and his blood is dripping down

  298. on the ground

  299. and all of that

  300. and he's going to be

  301. mocking Jesus

  302. just as the chief priests

  303. and just as the soldiers did.

  304. And another man

  305. on the other side of Jesus

  306. who's also literally

  307. being held up

  308. on the cross by nails

  309. and his blood

  310. is dripping down

  311. and he's going to have

  312. a conversion.

  313. You know,

  314. I said to you

  315. that there's these

  316. different accounts

  317. in the Gospels

  318. and they're all,

  319. they're four historical records

  320. of the death

  321. and resurrection of Jesus

  322. and they don't all tell you

  323. the same things

  324. and only Luke

  325. tells you this

  326. particular detail.

  327. The other three

  328. or two of the other three

  329. will tell you

  330. that both thieves

  331. mocked Jesus.

  332. And one of the Gospels

  333. will tell you

  334. that Jesus was

  335. in a sense

  336. nailed to the cross

  337. at around 9 a.m.

  338. in the morning.

  339. John's Gospel,

  340. the time's given different

  341. because it uses

  342. a different time system.

  343. It's like the difference

  344. between those of us

  345. who use a,

  346. you know,

  347. 12 hours

  348. versus a 24-hour clock.

  349. You know,

  350. that some people

  351. will say it's,

  352. you know,

  353. 1,300 hours

  354. as opposed to

  355. 1 o'clock in the afternoon.

  356. John has a different way

  357. of keeping the time

  358. than the other

  359. three Gospel writers

  360. and it's clear

  361. that in Mark

  362. that Jesus is crucified

  363. at 9 a.m.

  364. and it's clear

  365. in Mark and Matthew

  366. that from 9 a.m.

  367. till approximately noon

  368. that both thieves

  369. are going to mock Jesus.

  370. but the Bible

  371. doesn't tell us why

  372. but it just tells us

  373. that for some reason

  374. both are hanging

  375. from the cross,

  376. both are dying,

  377. both are completely

  378. and utterly humiliated

  379. in front of the crowd

  380. and one man's response

  381. to this

  382. is to pick on Jesus

  383. and another man's response

  384. was to pick on Jesus

  385. but for some reason

  386. which we do not know,

  387. somewhere between

  388. 9 in the morning

  389. and noon

  390. the second man's heart

  391. was changed

  392. and it's actually

  393. a credit

  394. to show

  395. the historical

  396. nature of this account

  397. is that

  398. Luke doesn't tell us

  399. why he changed his mind

  400. because how could he tell us

  401. how he changed his mind?

  402. He could only tell us

  403. how he changed his mind.

  404. Luke could only tell us

  405. how he changed his mind

  406. if the man survived

  407. and then could sit down

  408. with Luke over a glass of wine

  409. and say,

  410. oh yeah,

  411. I was on the cross

  412. and this really struck me

  413. and this really struck me

  414. and this really struck me

  415. and it felt like the Holy Spirit

  416. coming upon me

  417. but no,

  418. we don't know that

  419. because as we know

  420. sometime after this

  421. the man after never leaving the cross

  422. is going to die

  423. and so nobody can ask the man

  424. why is it that you changed?

  425. All we can see

  426. is that Luke records

  427. that for some reason

  428. that one man

  429. seeing the same thing

  430. that everybody else sees

  431. and experiencing the same thing

  432. that the other thief sees

  433. that he has

  434. a profound and deep change

  435. in his life.

  436. Listen to it here.

  437. Verse 39.

  438. One of the criminals

  439. who were hanged

  440. railed at Jesus saying,

  441. are you not the Christ?

  442. Save yourself and us.

  443. But the other rebuked him saying,

  444. do you not fear God

  445. since you are under

  446. the same sentence

  447. of condemnation

  448. and we indeed justly?

  449. For we are receiving

  450. the due reward

  451. of our deeds

  452. but this man

  453. has done nothing wrong.

  454. Here's this

  455. profound act of faith.

  456. It's one of the most

  457. touching moments

  458. I think

  459. in all of the Gospels

  460. these next couple of verses.

  461. And the thief says,

  462. Jesus,

  463. remember the man

  464. is hanging on the cross.

  465. The blood from his back

  466. and the blood

  467. from his arms

  468. and the blood

  469. from his feet

  470. are dripping on the ground.

  471. And that's what Jesus

  472. is happening to Jesus as well.

  473. And the thief says,

  474. Jesus,

  475. remember me

  476. when you come

  477. into your kingdom.

  478. And one of the things

  479. which is so remarkable

  480. about this

  481. is that

  482. in the original language

  483. he just

  484. has this trust

  485. in Jesus

  486. within the

  487. Jewish religious terms

  488. that aren't really

  489. quite what God's

  490. going to do

  491. and Jesus

  492. doesn't then say to him,

  493. oh dear man,

  494. you've just failed

  495. the theology test

  496. and your ethics

  497. are terrible

  498. and I wish

  499. I had more time

  500. to actually set you

  501. straight on the need

  502. of federal

  503. incorporation

  504. and headship

  505. and sacramental

  506. theology

  507. and atonement

  508. and I wish

  509. you could be baptized

  510. and have communion

  511. first

  512. and no Jesus,

  513. what is Jesus?

  514. Just to say

  515. that stuff.

  516. This man says,

  517. Jesus,

  518. when you come

  519. into your kingdom,

  520. in other words,

  521. when the resurrection

  522. happens

  523. in the last days,

  524. but it's your kingdom,

  525. Jesus,

  526. that's the great thing.

  527. It's Jesus,

  528. it's your kingdom,

  529. your kingdom

  530. and when it comes,

  531. remember me,

  532. remember me,

  533. remember me.

  534. Jesus says to him

  535. in verse 43

  536. and it says here in English,

  537. truly I say to you,

  538. today you will be with me

  539. in paradise.

  540. No Christian,

  541. no matter how much

  542. they're suffering

  543. and they are close to death,

  544. I should say,

  545. every Christian,

  546. we should remember

  547. that when we are

  548. close to death,

  549. we are just moments away

  550. from paradise.

  551. Jesus,

  552. by saying truly

  553. I say to you

  554. in the original language,

  555. is a very,

  556. very solemn pronouncement

  557. and it's very,

  558. very,

  559. it's very,

  560. very moving.

  561. Now,

  562. this is the first

  563. of two or three

  564. or four times

  565. I'm going to mention

  566. how the gospel

  567. is very un-Canadian

  568. and very un-American

  569. and I'm just going

  570. to point it out

  571. and in some ways

  572. it's so un-Canadian,

  573. all I can do

  574. is tell you

  575. that it's very un-Canadian

  576. and I can't necessarily

  577. argue or prove to you

  578. that Canadians are wrong

  579. and the Bible is right,

  580. but I just want to point it out

  581. that it's very un-Canadian.

  582. If you,

  583. if we were to go

  584. afterwards the service

  585. and just walk up and down,

  586. go to the University of Ottawa

  587. and go up and down

  588. King Edward

  589. and go along Rideau Street

  590. and we were just to have

  591. a bit of a,

  592. you know,

  593. a pad with a question

  594. and ask you

  595. what happens when you die.

  596. I don't know what,

  597. maybe 80,

  598. 90% of the people

  599. that we would talk to

  600. would say

  601. I will go to a better place

  602. and maybe some will just say

  603. when you die,

  604. that's it,

  605. but probably everybody

  606. would say

  607. I go to a better place

  608. and this,

  609. these next few verses

  610. just are very,

  611. very,

  612. very,

  613. very un-Canadian

  614. because Canadians

  615. believe that we're just

  616. going to go to a better place

  617. it's not necessarily

  618. a place where God is

  619. but if there is a God

  620. he's a wimpy type of God,

  621. a distant God

  622. who basically

  623. will now

  624. in the better place

  625. just cater to our needs

  626. and we might mock

  627. Muslims

  628. for thinking

  629. that they're going to

  630. go and spend time

  631. with virgins

  632. but the fact of the matter

  633. is that the Canadians

  634. while we might not have

  635. a crudely sexual

  636. type of an image of it

  637. that in fact

  638. we have a crudely

  639. self-centered

  640. materialistic image

  641. of it

  642. that we just go to

  643. a better place

  644. where God

  645. will cater to

  646. wherever he needs

  647. and the average Canadian

  648. they have no type

  649. of basis

  650. as to why

  651. that might be true

  652. or why

  653. I mean really

  654. it's just

  655. it's both on one hand

  656. an intuition

  657. of life is more

  658. there's something

  659. more than life

  660. but it's also

  661. a great sign

  662. of the great

  663. overwhelming

  664. and I don't mean

  665. to offend

  666. if you're a guest

  667. but it's a great

  668. type of presumption

  669. actually

  670. that just

  671. because I'm me

  672. when I die

  673. I go to a better

  674. place

  675. and these next

  676. few verses

  677. are going to

  678. really show us

  679. that the Bible's

  680. view of God

  681. and what happens

  682. is very

  683. very

  684. very

  685. very

  686. very

  687. un-Canadian

  688. and very different

  689. verse 44

  690. it was now

  691. about the sixth hour

  692. and that means

  693. around noon

  694. and we're going to

  695. see here

  696. that there's two

  697. miracles that happen

  698. they're just miracles

  699. they're just

  700. God does something

  701. God is revealed

  702. not as being

  703. distant and absent

  704. but God shows up

  705. and does something

  706. it was about

  707. the sixth hour

  708. and there was

  709. darkness

  710. over the whole land

  711. until the ninth hour

  712. three o'clock

  713. in the afternoon

  714. the brightest time

  715. of the day

  716. and while the sun's

  717. light failed

  718. and the curtain

  719. of the temple

  720. was torn

  721. in two

  722. the religious

  723. leaders

  724. and the Romans

  725. had been

  726. mocking Jesus

  727. God now

  728. shows up

  729. and performs

  730. two miracles

  731. and his miracles

  732. in a sense

  733. are both

  734. a mocking

  735. of the pretensions

  736. of the soldiers

  737. in the Roman Empire

  738. and it is a mocking

  739. of the pretensions

  740. of the chief priests

  741. and the Jewish

  742. religious leaders

  743. it is both

  744. a mocking

  745. and it's

  746. a warning

  747. in other words

  748. the true

  749. and living God

  750. is not a tame

  751. God

  752. is not a wimpy God

  753. is not a distant

  754. God

  755. he's not a God

  756. that we can just

  757. take lightly

  758. and pretend

  759. that he is

  760. exactly a God

  761. who will only

  762. fulfill our needs

  763. and wishes

  764. because ultimately

  765. we are the center

  766. of the universe

  767. I am the center

  768. of the universe

  769. the God

  770. who truly does exist

  771. the God

  772. who's revealed

  773. here in the scriptures

  774. he now

  775. mocks and warns

  776. the Romans

  777. first the Romans

  778. and then the Jewish people

  779. how does he do that?

  780. the Romans

  781. believed in omens

  782. and so

  783. every emperor

  784. the death

  785. of an emperor

  786. the ascension

  787. of an emperor

  788. was marked

  789. with omens

  790. and

  791. you know

  792. those were made up

  793. they were made up

  794. or they'd find something

  795. and say

  796. oh that's the omen

  797. you know

  798. but they're looking for it

  799. because it has to be there

  800. but most of the time

  801. it's just

  802. it's just made up

  803. it's just invented

  804. and these Roman soldiers

  805. are standing there

  806. and they

  807. maybe they believe

  808. the made up stuff

  809. but what they

  810. and maybe they don't

  811. maybe they know

  812. it's just made up

  813. but they're there

  814. and an omen

  815. happens

  816. it's eleven o'clock

  817. eleven fifteen

  818. eleven thirty

  819. eleven forty five

  820. and then somewhere around noon

  821. the sun's light

  822. fails

  823. and it fails

  824. for three hours

  825. and as the sun's light

  826. returns

  827. Jesus died

  828. Jesus actually

  829. dies

  830. on the cross

  831. and then moments

  832. after he dies

  833. the light returns

  834. and good grief

  835. if you are a Roman soldier

  836. this is not

  837. a made up

  838. omen

  839. the skies

  840. changed

  841. the light

  842. of the sun

  843. failed

  844. all of our

  845. beliefs

  846. about emperors

  847. being gods

  848. and these purported

  849. signs and omens

  850. in the skies

  851. and they're just

  852. really just made up

  853. the sky

  854. changes

  855. the Jewish religious

  856. leaders

  857. who believe

  858. that they guard

  859. the rituals

  860. and God is in their

  861. pocket

  862. and God is tame

  863. and they know how to do

  864. the ceremonies

  865. and they know how to

  866. control the people

  867. and they know how to

  868. control the interpretation

  869. of the word

  870. and they can control

  871. all of these things

  872. and as the son of man

  873. God himself

  874. is dying upon the cross

  875. the veil

  876. that separates

  877. the holy of holies

  878. that only a priest

  879. can enter

  880. once in a year

  881. after many sacrifices

  882. that is ripped

  883. from top

  884. to bottom

  885. God

  886. shows up

  887. and the holy

  888. of holies

  889. is open

  890. for all

  891. to view

  892. and God

  893. mocks

  894. and warns

  895. God is not

  896. like most Canadians

  897. believe him to be

  898. according to the Bible

  899. I can't prove

  900. that that's true

  901. but I can point out

  902. that that's the case

  903. I think ultimately

  904. the resurrection

  905. of Jesus

  906. is strong

  907. belief

  908. and there's other things

  909. that we can say

  910. but it just needs

  911. to be strongly grasped

  912. verse 46

  913. then Jesus calling out

  914. with a loud voice

  915. said

  916. father into your hands

  917. I commit my spirit

  918. and having said this

  919. he breathed his last

  920. and it's not very obvious

  921. here in the English

  922. but it's obvious

  923. in the original language

  924. that what happens

  925. here to Jesus

  926. is quite remarkable

  927. and I don't mean

  928. to depress you

  929. but really

  930. one way we can image

  931. what's happening

  932. with this

  933. is that what happens

  934. with us

  935. with us human beings

  936. is that as I walk

  937. through my life

  938. what you can really

  939. imagine is that

  940. the grim reaper

  941. death himself

  942. follows behind me

  943. and as my day

  944. goes on

  945. I always stay

  946. a couple of steps

  947. above

  948. in front of the grim reaper

  949. but when my time

  950. is up

  951. death itself

  952. overtakes me

  953. and I succumb

  954. to death

  955. and I have no choice

  956. over succumbing

  957. to death

  958. because when death

  959. comes

  960. I will succumb

  961. I am powerless

  962. against death

  963. as are every single

  964. one of you

  965. but the image here

  966. is not of death

  967. finally catching up

  968. to Jesus

  969. and overwhelming

  970. Jesus

  971. because Jesus

  972. is weaker than death

  973. what is portrayed

  974. here

  975. is that death

  976. always had to keep

  977. its distance

  978. from Jesus

  979. John tells us

  980. that Jesus

  981. is life itself

  982. he doesn't have life

  983. he is life

  984. and it's as if

  985. death itself

  986. is always

  987. at more than

  988. arm's length

  989. from him

  990. and that on the cross

  991. as Jesus

  992. the final word

  993. that he says

  994. from the cross

  995. is that

  996. father into my hands

  997. I commit your spirit

  998. and death

  999. is the separation

  1000. of the spirit

  1001. from the body

  1002. and Jesus

  1003. gives himself

  1004. to the father

  1005. and with that

  1006. he enters death

  1007. he enters death

  1008. he's in control

  1009. and he

  1010. enters death

  1011. and it's beyond this

1012. we're going to look at it

  1013. next Sunday

1014. we see that as he

  1015. enters death

  1016. and he will eventually

  1017. defeat death

  1018. and death itself

  1019. is changed

  1020. death

  1021. where is your victory

  1022. where is your sting

  1023. that Jesus

  1024. life himself

  1025. life itself

  1026. entering death

  1027. will change death

  1028. and those

  1029. who put their faith

  1030. and trust

  1031. in life itself

  1032. will share

  1033. in life itself

  1034. and death

  1035. is but a passing

  1036. into

  1037. paradise

  1038. with the untamed

  1039. good

  1040. and living God

  1041. for the lowliest

  1042. disciple

  1043. verse 47

  1044. now when the centurion

1045. saw what had taken place

  1046. he praised God

  1047. saying certainly

  1048. this man was innocent

  1049. and Luke just records

  1050. one thing

  1051. that the centurion

  1052. said

  1053. he said other things

  1054. that others record

1055. but Luke wants to really

  1056. deeply emphasize

  1057. in his account

  1058. the innocence of Jesus

  1059. and I won't read it now

1060. but the rest of it

1061. you can read it later on

  1062. 48 to the end

  1063. time after time

  1064. after time

1065. it just wants to emphasize

  1066. that Jesus is dead

  1067. Jesus is dead

  1068. Jesus is dead

  1069. Jesus is dead

  1070. Jesus is dead

  1071. nobody expected him

1072. to come again to life

  1073. he is dead

  1074. he is dead

  1075. he will stay dead

  1076. and that's what

  1077. the other verses

  1078. want to communicate

  1079. to us

  1080. now

1081. some of you might say

  1082. okay George

  1083. that's a

  1084. you've given the context

  1085. of the text

  1086. what about Bob

  1087. and Andy

  1088. what about Bob

1089. I wanted to say that

  1090. because I really like

  1091. that Bill Murray movie

  1092. what about Bob

  1093. so actually

1094. what about Andy and Bob

  1095. Andrew if you could

  1096. put the verse up

  1097. or

  1098. there we go

  1099. could you say this

  1100. with me

  1101. and Jesus said

  1102. father forgive them

  1103. for they know not

  1104. what they do

  1105. let's say it again

  1106. and Jesus said

  1107. father forgive them

  1108. for they know not

  1109. what they do

  1110. here's the

  1111. here's the thing

  1112. remember Andy and Bob

1113. and Andy did something wrong

  1114. Bob tells him

  1115. Andy apologizes

  1116. and then

  1117. as these things go

  1118. it just goes south

  1119. and Andy's asking me

  1120. what he should do

  1121. because he really wants

  1122. to be reconciled

  1123. to Bob

1124. and here's the first point

1125. if you could put it up

1126. which is part of what I told him

  1127. one person alone

  1128. can forgive

  1129. but two

  1130. are needed

  1131. for reconciliation

  1132. one person alone

  1133. can forgive

  1134. but two

  1135. are needed

  1136. for reconciliation

  1137. Andy

  1138. was

  1139. battered

  1140. by this whole event

  1141. the several weeks

  1142. of conversation

1143. before he talked to me

  1144. he was

  1145. he'd been really good

  1146. friends with Bob

  1147. he was really bothered

  1148. that Bob didn't want

  1149. to see him

  1150. he was really bothered

  1151. that Bob had been

  1152. saying bad things

  1153. about him

  1154. to his mutual friends

  1155. and had really

  1156. had really just

  1157. had was actually

  1158. become very vindictive

  1159. and vengeful

  1160. and Andy

  1161. on one hand

  1162. he's caught

  1163. because he wants

  1164. to be reconciled

  1165. he felt he's forgiven

  1166. and to be honest

  1167. when I'm talking

  1168. to Andy

  1169. you could see

  1170. at times

  1171. his fists would clench

  1172. and you could

  1173. actually almost

  1174. see that

  1175. he's a strong guy

  1176. you could see

  1177. like his muscles

  1178. tensing

  1179. and I knew

  1180. that he actually

  1181. wanted to pound Bob

  1182. and if not

  1183. pound him physically

  1184. pound him verbally

  1185. and launch

  1186. a full scale

  1187. offensive

  1188. and what

  1189. Bob

  1190. was saying

  1191. to him

  1192. was eating

  1193. him up

  1194. in my previous

  1195. church

  1196. I was the pastor

  1197. of some

  1198. four little

  1199. country churches

  1200. and in four

  1201. these country churches

  1202. when there's a death

  1203. and I do a funeral

1204. I would do the funeral

  1205. with the church

  1206. the ladies

  1207. of the church

  1208. would gather

  1209. and they would

  1210. make a lunch

  1211. it didn't matter

  1212. if you had it

  1213. in the morning

  1214. or the afternoon

  1215. it was always called

  1216. a lunch

  1217. for some reason

  1218. and one time

  1219. there was this

  1220. big funeral

  1221. and a big lunch

  1222. and afterwards

  1223. shortly after

  1224. the funeral

  1225. was over

  1226. I was really

  1227. sick

  1228. and I discovered

  1229. that a couple

  1230. of my kids

  1231. were sick

  1232. and I discovered

  1233. that there were

  1234. a lot of people

  1235. in the church

  1236. who were sick

  1237. and we realized

  1238. we figured it out

  1239. but one particular

  1240. person's

  1241. multiple trays

  1242. of egg salad

  1243. sandwiches

  1244. gave us food

  1245. poisoning

  1246. and we of course

  1247. never told people

  1248. we never told

  1249. that person

  1250. that do you realize

  1251. that your three trays

  1252. of sandwiches

  1253. of egg salad

  1254. sandwiches

  1255. gave us all

  1256. food poisoning

  1257. that would be

  1258. devastating

  1259. especially

  1260. in a rural

  1261. community

  1262. person would

  1263. never live it

  1264. down

  1265. but here's

  1266. the thing

  1267. here's the thing

  1268. about how one

  1269. person alone

  1270. can forgive

  1271. and people

  1272. need to forgive

  1273. to not forgive

  1274. for by Andy

  1275. not forgiving

  1276. Bob

  1277. what he was doing

  1278. was that every day

  1279. he would think

  1280. about Bob

  1281. and it would be

  1282. like him taking

  1283. one of those

  1284. egg salad sandwiches

  1285. and eating

  1286. an egg salad sandwich

  1287. saying I sure hope

  1288. this makes Bob

  1289. sick

  1290. and all it does

  1291. is make Andy

  1292. sick

  1293. Bob's having

  1294. a great time

  1295. luxuriating

  1296. in his accusations

  1297. and his slander

  1298. and Andy's

  1299. getting eaten up

  1300. taking another

  1301. one of those

  1302. food poison

  1303. egg salad sandwiches

  1304. eating it

  1305. hoping that Bob

  1306. gets sick

  1307. and only Andy's

  1308. getting sick

  1309. and one of the

  1310. things I said

  1311. to Andy

  1312. is that

  1313. whether or not

  1314. he's able to

  1315. eventually reconcile

  1316. with Bob

  1317. that's

  1318. that's

  1319. maybe that'll

  1320. happen

  1321. but what he

  1322. needs to do

  1323. is he needs

  1324. to forgive

  1325. Bob

  1326. he needs

  1327. to forgive

  1328. Bob

  1329. and here's

  1330. the thing

  1331. one person

  1332. alone

  1333. can forgive

  1334. but two

  1335. are needed

  1336. for reconciliation

  1337. if you could

  1338. put the verse

  1339. up again

  1340. you want to

  1341. say this verse

  1342. with me

  1343. again

  1344. say it with me

  1345. and Jesus

  1346. said

  1347. father

  1348. forgive them

  1349. for they know

  1350. not what they

  1351. do

  1352. let's say it

  1353. again

  1354. and Jesus

  1355. said

  1356. father

  1357. forgive them

  1358. for they

  1359. know not

  1360. what they

  1361. do

  1362. here's the

  1363. second thing

  1364. if you could

  1365. put it up

  1366. Rebecca

  1367. I cannot

  1368. forgive another

  1369. person

  1370. without personally

  1371. paying a price

  1372. I cannot

  1373. forgive another

  1374. person

  1375. without personally

  1376. paying a price

  1377. Andy would

  1378. talk to me

  1379. about this

  1380. I could see

  1381. his fists

  1382. at time

  1383. clenching

  1384. as I said

  1385. you could see

  1386. his arms

  1387. you could

  1388. see the

  1389. muscles

  1390. in his

  1391. you know

  1392. the bit

  1393. of the

  1394. biceps

  1395. you could

  1396. see in

  1397. his wrist

  1398. you could

  1399. see them

  1400. tensing

  1401. and flexing

  1402. you could

  1403. see the

  1404. emotion

  1405. you could

  1406. see the

  1407. hurt

  1408. about his

  1409. reputation

  1410. you know

  1411. listen

  1412. we all

  1413. when you

  1414. think about

  1415. it for a

  1416. second

  1417. he's eating

  1418. these poison

  1419. egg salad

  1420. sandwiches

  1421. all it's

  1422. doing is

  1423. making him

  1424. sick

  1425. and on

  1426. one hand

  1427. to forgive

  1428. that other

  1429. person

  1430. means that

  1431. you have

  1432. to

  1433. pay a

  1434. price

  1435. for that

  1436. but the

  1437. price is

  1438. worth it

  1439. how does

  1440. he have to

  1441. pay a

  1442. price

  1443. he has to

  1444. pay a

  1445. price

  1446. he's not

  1447. going to

  1448. get revenge

  1449. he has to

  1450. pay a

  1451. price

  1452. because it

  1453. might be

  1454. that the

  1455. friends

  1456. that Bob

  1457. has slandered

  1458. about Andy

  1459. that Andy

  1460. will never

  1461. get to set

  1462. the record

  1463. straight

  1464. he might

  1465. just have

  1466. to pay

  1467. that price

  1468. he might

  1469. have to

  1470. pay a

  1471. price

  1472. in terms

  1473. of

  1474. his

  1475. pride

  1476. and

  1477. he has

  1478. to pay

  1479. a price

  1480. of just

  1481. being able

  1482. to sense

  1483. to swallow

  1484. that anger

  1485. and forgiveness

  1486. is a miracle

  1487. you know

  1488. it's a

  1489. common grace

  1490. it's a miracle

  1491. every time

  1492. somebody forgives

  1493. and it's not

  1494. just something

  1495. that only

  1496. Christians do

  1497. because we all

  1498. know non-Christians

  1499. who forgive

  1500. in fact we know

  1501. lots of Christians

  1502. who maybe

  1503. desperately need

  1504. to forgive

  1505. and non-Christians

  1506. who are very

  1507. good at forgiving

  1508. it's just part

  1509. of God's

  1510. common grace

  1511. that there's

  1512. this type

  1513. of price

  1514. that we pay

  1515. for forgiving

  1516. the other person

  1517. but we realize

  1518. that it's just

  1519. so worth it

  1520. because on the

  1521. other side

  1522. of it

  1523. there's a basic

  1524. there's not

  1525. forgetting

  1526. but there's

  1527. freedom

  1528. because who

  1529. wants to eat

  1530. food poison

  1531. egg salad

  1532. sandwiches

  1533. every day

  1534. and be sick

  1535. it's so much

  1536. better just

  1537. to be free

  1538. just to be

  1539. free

  1540. but a price

  1541. has to be

  1542. paid

  1543. a price

  1544. has to be

  1545. paid

  1546. could you put

  1547. the verse up

  1548. again for us

  1549. Rebecca

  1550. let's say it

  1551. together

  1552. and Jesus

  1553. said

  1554. father forgive

  1555. them for they

  1556. know not what

  1557. they do

  1558. here's the third

  1559. point if you could

  1560. put it up

  1561. Rebecca

  1562. on the cross

  1563. Jesus paid

  1564. the price

  1565. of God

  1566. forgiving me

  1567. and he's

  1568. going to

  1569. forgive Bob

  1570. he has to

  1571. pay a price

  1572. see here's

  1573. the thing

  1574. which makes

  1575. Christian faith

  1576. in the gospel

  1577. so Islam

  1578. has nothing

  1579. for forgiveness

  1580. it's just a

  1581. mere act

  1582. of just a

  1583. mere

  1584. you go to

  1585. the good

  1586. place

  1587. you go to

  1588. the bad

  1589. place

  1590. you go to

  1591. the good

  1592. place

  1593. bad

  1594. bad

  1595. bad

  1596. good

  1597. bad

  1598. bad

  1599. just pure

  1600. it doesn't

  1601. make any

  1602. psychological

  1603. emotional

  1604. sense

  1605. the Christian

  1606. faith

  1607. makes so

  1608. much sense

  1609. and provides

  1610. so much

  1611. hope

  1612. and this

  1613. sentence

  1614. looks a bit

  1615. odd

  1616. and I tried

  1617. to figure a

  1618. way to put

  1619. it in

  1620. but this

  1621. was just

  1622. so much

  1623. more punchy

  1624. but really

  1625. you have to

  1626. remember

  1627. that I

  1628. wanted to

  1629. try to say

  1630. something like

  1631. on the cross

  1632. Jesus paid

  1633. the price

  1634. of God

  1635. the Father

  1636. God

  1637. the Son

  1638. God

  1639. the Holy

  1640. Spirit

  1641. three persons

  1642. one God

  1643. forever and

  1644. ever and

  1645. ever forgiving

  1646. me

  1647. but that's

  1648. what happens

  1649. if you wanted

  1650. to string it

  1651. out it's not

  1652. not as catchy

  1653. but on the

  1654. cross Jesus

  1655. paid the

  1656. price of

  1657. God

  1658. the Father

  1659. God

  1660. the Son

  1661. God

  1662. the Holy

  1663. Spirit

  1664. three persons

  1665. one God

  1666. forever and

  1667. ever world

  1668. without end

  1669. forgiving me

  1670. and on the

  1671. cross

  1672. you notice

  1673. that little

  1674. line about

  1675. you know

  1676. forgive them

  1677. for they know

  1678. not what they

  1679. do

  1680. this isn't

  1681. just saying

  1682. because they're

  1683. not very

  1684. smart

  1685. forgive them

  1686. that's not

  1687. it's showing

  1688. that forgiveness

  1689. is not the

  1690. same thing

  1691. as forgetting

  1692. it shows

  1693. that Jesus

  1694. knows what's

  1695. going on

  1696. in their

  1697. hearts

  1698. you see

  1699. that's the

  1700. part of

  1701. the great

  1702. confidence

  1703. that I

  1704. can have

  1705. that when

  1706. I understand

  1707. that every

  1708. single wrong

  1709. I've done

  1710. and every

  1711. wrong that's

  1712. a wrong

  1713. because I

  1714. should have

  1715. done something

  1716. and I

  1717. didn't do

  1718. something

  1719. the good

  1720. that I

  1721. should have

  1722. done

  1723. and I

  1724. didn't do

  1725. and that's

  1726. a type

  1727. of wrong

  1728. and the

  1729. actual wrong

  1730. I did

  1731. and Jesus

  1732. knows it

  1733. all about

  1734. me

  1735. all about

  1736. me

  1737. and Jesus

  1738. is dying

  1739. on the

  1740. cross

  1741. is God

  1742. absorbing

  1743. into

  1744. himself

  1745. the price

  1746. that has

  1747. to be

  1748. paid

  1749. for God

  1750. to forgive

  1751. me

  1752. Rebecca

  1753. could you

  1754. put up the

  1755. verse again

  1756. could you

  1757. all join

  1758. me in saying

  1759. it this is

  1760. the last

  1761. time we'll

  1762. all say

  1763. it together

  1764. and Jesus

  1765. said

  1766. father

  1767. forgive them

  1768. for they

  1769. know not

  1770. what they

  1771. do

  1772. let's say

  1773. it again

  1774. father

  1775. forgive them

  1776. for they

  1777. know not

  1778. what I

  1779. do

  1780. here's the

  1781. fourth point

  1782. if you could

  1783. put it up

  1784. Rebecca

  1785. every wrong

  1786. I do

  1787. is an

  1788. offense

  1789. against

  1790. another

  1791. person

  1792. or creation

  1793. and

  1794. against

  1795. God

  1796. himself

  1797. every

  1798. wrong

  1799. I do

  1800. is an

  1801. offense

  1802. against

  1803. another

  1804. person

  1805. or creation

  1806. and

  1807. against

  1808. God

  1809. himself

  1810. this is

  1811. very

  1812. very

  1813. un-Canadian

  1814. see

  1815. if Jesus

  1816. is on the

  1817. cross

  1818. saying

  1819. father

  1820. forgive

  1821. them

  1822. for they

  1823. know not

  1824. what they

  1825. do

  1826. God's

  1827. not

  1828. where's

  1829. God

  1830. being

  1831. wrong

  1832. against

  1833. Jesus

  1834. but you

  1835. see

  1836. the

  1837. Christian

  1838. understanding

  1839. of right

  1840. and wrong

  1841. is not

  1842. utilitarian

  1843. it's not

  1844. consequentialist

  1845. it's

  1846. that

  1847. there's

  1848. that

  1849. ultimately

  1850. right

  1851. and wrong

  1852. just

  1853. reveal

  1854. the

  1855. good

  1856. reflects

  1857. the

  1858. character

  1859. of God

  1860. and wrong

  1861. is some

  1862. bending

  1863. or rejection

  1864. or breaking

  1865. of that

  1866. which is

  1867. good

  1868. and that

  1869. there is

  1870. it can be

  1871. hard to

  1872. always

  1873. understand

  1874. it

  1875. and we're

  1876. bent

  1877. and broken

  1878. ourselves

  1879. and all

  1880. but there's

  1881. this moral

  1882. order that

  1883. actually exists

  1884. and that

  1885. every wrong

  1886. act I do

  1887. against another

  1888. person

  1889. or against

  1890. the created

  1891. order

  1892. I try to

  1893. put that

  1894. in

  1895. because we

  1896. can wrong

  1897. our dog

  1898. we can

  1899. wrong

  1900. our donkey

  1901. we can

  1902. wrong the

  1903. rivers and

  1904. the lakes

  1905. and the sky

  1906. and every

  1907. wrong we

  1908. do is

  1909. also a

  1910. wrong

  1911. against

  1912. God

  1913. and that's

  1914. why Jesus

  1915. in his

  1916. death upon

  1917. the cross

  1918. he is

  1919. paying

  1920. the price

  1921. for God

  1922. to forgive

  1923. me

  1924. now some

  1925. of you

  1926. might be

  1927. saying

  1928. okay George

  1929. I'm a little

  1930. just so

  1931. make this

  1932. clear

  1933. okay so

  1934. you're telling

  1935. Andy that

  1936. he has to

  1937. forgive

  1938. Bob

  1939. okay remember

  1940. my first

  1941. point was

  1942. that

  1943. one person

  1944. alone can

  1945. forgive but

  1946. two are

  1947. needed for

  1948. reconciliation

  1949. and

  1950. you know

  1951. part you

  1952. can't really

  1953. have

  1954. this is one

  1955. of the things

  1956. about this

  1957. truth and

  1958. reconciliation

  1959. commission

  1960. I don't want

  1961. to be political

  1962. about it but

  1963. without forgiveness

  1964. there can't

  1965. really be

  1966. reconciliation

  1967. and you

  1968. can't force

  1969. somebody to

  1970. forgive but

  1971. gosh for

  1972. life why

  1973. go through

  1974. life eating

  1975. food poisoned

  1976. egg salad

  1977. sandwiches hoping

  1978. the other

  1979. person will

  1980. die a lot

  1981. better to

  1982. forgive

  1983. and

  1984. but

  1985. so Andy

  1986. has to

  1987. forgive

  1988. Bob

  1989. but Bob

  1990. has to

  1991. still do

  1992. something if

  1993. there's going

  1994. to actually be

  1995. reconciliation

  1996. and this is

  1997. where we see

  1998. this wonderful

  1999. thing and

  2000. we're not

  2001. going to have

  2002. it up on

  2003. the screen

  2004. but if you

  2005. have your

  2006. Bibles open

  2007. look at what

  2008. Jesus says to

  2009. the thief on

  2010. the cross

  2011. remember in

  2012. verse 42

  2013. the thief after

  2014. acknowledging that

  2015. he's up there

  2016. wrong and that

  2017. Jesus is

  2018. innocent the

  2019. thief says

  2020. Jesus remember

  2021. me when you

  2022. come into

  2023. your kingdom

  2024. and in

  2025. verse 43

  2026. Jesus says

  2027. to truly I

  2028. say to you

  2029. today you

  2030. will be with

  2031. me in

  2032. paradise

  2033. here's the

  2034. thing

  2035. when I was

  2036. younger I

  2037. used to

  2038. think that

  2039. most things

  2040. that were

  2041. right you

  2042. know when

  2043. people got

  2044. into conflict

  2045. that it

  2046. was sort

  2047. of 50-50

  2048. and maybe

  2049. 60-40

  2050. and then

  2051. as a

  2052. minister I

  2053. have come

  2054. to realize

  2055. that that's

  2056. often the

  2057. case and

  2058. one of the

  2059. problems with

  2060. Andy and

  2061. Bob and

  2062. their thing

  2063. is it

  2064. started off

  2065. with Andy

  2066. doing the

  2067. wrong thing

  2068. and Bob

  2069. not but

  2070. then it

  2071. got really

  2072. messy and

  2073. you know

  2074. Bob did

  2075. all sorts

  2076. of wrong

  2077. things and

  2078. it got

  2079. really messy

  2080. and that's

  2081. really true

  2082. of human

  2083. life but

  2084. you know

  2085. there are

  2086. still some

  2087. times I

  2088. know for a

  2089. fact that

  2090. there still

  2091. are some

  2092. times when

  2093. it's 99.99999999%

  2094. one person's

  2095. fault and not

  2096. the other and

  2097. I don't

  2098. just know it

  2099. because I've

  2100. had to deal

  2101. with people I

  2102. know it because

  2103. of myself I

  2104. know that there

  2105. have been times

  2106. I have hurt

  2107. my relationship

  2108. with my

  2109. wife and

  2110. I'll be honest

  2111. with you it

  2112. wasn't 50-50 or

  2113. 60-40 it was

  2114. 99.999999% my

  2115. fault and

  2116. whatever's left

  2117. over out of

  2118. that purse that

  2119. there's just

  2120. some times when

  2121. it's really all

  2122. one person's

  2123. fault it really

  2124. is it's all

  2125. one person's

  2126. fault and what

  2127. do you do when

  2128. it's all one

  2129. person's fault

  2130. well all you

  2131. can hope for

  2132. if the marriage

  2133. isn't going to

  2134. end or the

  2135. relationship isn't

  2136. going to end

  2137. is that when

  2138. it's all one

  2139. person's fault

  2140. you have to

  2141. hope that the

  2142. other person

  2143. forgives and

  2144. you have to

  2145. hope that as

  2146. the other person

  2147. forgives that in

  2148. this case I

  2149. swallow my

  2150. pride and

  2151. humble myself

  2152. and will say

  2153. to my wife

  2154. Louise I'm

  2155. really sorry

  2156. I've done

  2157. wrong will

  2158. you forgive me

  2159. and I want to

  2160. stay with you

  2161. that's what

  2162. salvation is

  2163. God's done

  2164. nothing wrong

  2165. to you

  2166. God's done

  2167. nothing wrong

  2168. to me

  2169. my relationship

  2170. with God and

  2171. your relationship

  2172. with God is

  2173. nothing like the

  2174. relationship of

  2175. Andy and Bob

  2176. and in my case

  2177. with God and in

  2178. your case with

  2179. God the fact of

  2180. the matter is

  2181. it's a hundred

  2182. percent wrongdoing

  2183. by you and me

  2184. and zero by God

  2185. and salvation is

  2186. described as

  2187. reconciliation and

  2188. reconciliation only

  2189. happens if the

  2190. one who is wronged

  2191. forgives and pays

  2192. the price of

  2193. forgiving and

  2194. if you desire

  2195. to be reconciled

  2196. to the one that

  2197. you have wronged

  2198. can come to him

  2199. and say I have

  2200. done wrong I

  2201. am sorry I don't

  2202. want to do it

  2203. again will you

  2204. have me back

  2205. and that's what we

  2206. see on the cross

  2207. the thief he

  2208. doesn't have a

  2209. theology test he

  2210. can't pass it he

  2211. can't pass an

  2212. ethics test he

  2213. can't pass how

  2214. he's lived you

  2215. know two hours

  2216. before this he

  2217. was mocking

  2218. Jesus with the

  2219. other guy but

  2220. there's a change

  2221. in his heart and

  2222. and and reconciliation

  2223. is possible because

  2224. in the cross Jesus

  2225. is taking into

  2226. himself the price

  2227. that has to be

  2228. paid for God to

  2229. forgive me and

  2230. you and the

  2231. invitation we see

  2232. here with the

  2233. cross is for you

  2234. and me to say

  2235. father thank you

  2236. so much for

  2237. forgiving me

  2238. I have done

  2239. wrong I want

  2240. to be yours

  2241. reconciliation

  2242. takes us to

  2243. turn to receive

  2244. what's fully

  2245. done you see

  2246. that's why it

  2247. can be that

  2248. Jesus has died

  2249. his death upon

  2250. the cross is an

  2251. act of forgiveness

  2252. for every single

  2253. person that we

  2254. will meet today

  2255. for every single

  2256. person on the

  2257. planet and the

  2258. question isn't

  2259. whether the cross

  2260. is big enough and

  2261. God is big enough

  2262. to forgive all the

  2263. question is will you

  2264. turn to be

  2265. reconciled will I

  2266. turn to be

  2267. reconciled

2268. if you could put up

  2269. the next point I

  2270. couldn't word this

  2271. better I came across

2272. it in one in part of

  2273. my research for this

  2274. sermon one thief was

  2275. saved that no

  2276. sinner might despair

  2277. but only one that

  2278. no sinner might

  2279. presume don't

  2280. presume today

  2281. J.C.

  2282. Ryle is who

  2283. Ryle College is

  2284. named after one

  2285. thief was saved

  2286. that no sinner

  2287. might despair but

  2288. only one that no

  2289. sinner might

  2290. presume

  2291. Rebecca if you

  2292. could put up the

  2293. next point if

  2294. you're trying to

  2295. write these down

  2296. they'll be on the

  2297. web page tomorrow

  2298. here's the prayer

  2299. I urge you if

  2300. you've never said

  2301. a prayer like

  2302. this that there's

  2303. no time better than

  2304. right now like right

  2305. today like to see

  2306. this and stop

  2307. listening to me and

  2308. with your heart my

  2309. words aren't perfect

  2310. I'm just trying to

  2311. capture what's

  2312. happened in Luke

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  2313. chapter 23 and say

2314. this to Jesus to the

  2315. Father to the Holy

  2316. Spirit say it

  2317. yourself there's no

  2318. better time than

2319. right now to say it

  2320. Lord I have done

  2321. wrong I am sorry

  2322. thank you for

  2323. forgiving me on

  2324. the cross in your

  2325. grace please make

  2326. me yours please be

  2327. my Lord and never

2328. let me go in Jesus

  2329. name on men

  2330. Lord I have done

  2331. wrong I am sorry

  2332. thank you for

  2333. forgiving me on

  2334. the cross in your

  2335. grace please make me

  2336. yours please be my

  2337. Lord and never let

2338. me go in Jesus name

2339. Amen. I've gone way over my time. Just two things very, very, very briefly before we go. If you

2340. could put up the next point, Rebecca. As the gospel grips me, my desire to forgive will grow.

2341. As the gospel grips me, my desire to forgive will grow. It should grow. And here's the thing,

2342. here's the wonderful thing. All sorts of us today are eating rotten egg salad sandwich,

2343. hoping that after we've eaten those sandwiches, somebody else will get sick.

2344. And sometimes when we ask God to help us forgive another person, it happens instantly. But for most

2345. of us, it could be a journey of a couple of days or a couple of weeks or a couple of months or a

2346. couple of years. And even in some cases, it might require daily prayer that goes on for two decades,

2347. but it's always so worth it to stop eating rotten egg salad sandwiches. There's no good case for

2348. eating egg salad sandwiches that will give you food poisoning. There's no good case for it.

2349. And you know, if non-Christians, it's part of the common grace that they just realize they need to

2350. forgive. For us, realizing what Jesus did for us on the cross, as that grips us, then why wouldn't we

2351. want to call out to God and ask, Father, help me to forgive this person that wronged me 60 years ago,

2352. 40 years ago, 30 years ago, 20 years ago, last week, this morning. Father, help me to forgive.

2353. And who better than we can turn to to Jesus and say, Jesus, I'm having such a hard time forgiving.

2354. I am so filled with bitterness. I am so filled with anger. I am so filled with revenge. Who better

2355. than Jesus to pour our hearts out to if we have made him our Savior and Lord?

2356. Do it today. Begin it today.

2357. And final point, Rebecca, if you could put it up. As the gospel grips me, the cry of my heart will

2358. increasingly be, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. You know, it's really interesting in Luke's

2359. gospel, Father, forgive them for they know not what they do, is the first word from the cross. If you look

2360. at the four historical records of Jesus on the cross, there's seven things he says from the cross.

2361. Luke records the first and the last.

2362. The first and the last. If you go and ever start to learn morning and evening prayer, a great part of

2363. Anglican spirituality, you'll see that this prayer in different forms is a key part of the spirituality

2364. of morning and evening prayer. As the gospel grips me, the cry of my heart will be increasingly,

2365. men face eking sun. Father, into your hands I commit my joy. Father, into your hands I commit my day.

2366. Father, into your hands I commit my path. Father, into your hands I commit my prophecy.

2367. ant I commit my past. Father, into your hands I commit my desire for revenge. Father, into your

2368. hands I commit my desire to do evil. Father, into your hands I commit my money.

2369. Father, into your hands I commit my family. Into your hands I commit my career. Into your

2370. hands I commit my study. Into your hands, Father, as the gospel grips us, this will become the cry of our

2371. heart. I invite you to stand.

2372. let's bow our heads in prayer

2373. father if there are any who

2374. who prayed that prayer today maybe for the first time and

2375. acknowledging that Jesus has died and paid in himself

2376. the penalty the price that needs to be paid for forgiveness

2377. father if there's any who prayed that may your holy spirit just flood upon them

2378. and seal them as your own father seal them as your own and father

2379. for all of us father thank you so much that your son

2380. died upon the cross that paid the price that had to be paid for me to be

2381. forgiven for me to be reconciled to you father thank you that it was in your

2382. heart it was your heart that we would be desired that we would be reconciled

2383. to you that that when we turn to you and receive what Jesus has done for us that

2384. that's that's your heart that that would characterize our lives and father we

2385. ask that you would gently but deeply pour out your holy spirit upon us so that

2386. as we are gripped more and more by the gospel that we will desire to live up on

2387. the path of forgiving others and that we will as the gospel grips us father that

2388. we will live on the path of committing ourselves and commending

2389. ourselves and commending all that we do into your hands father make us disciples

2390. of Jesus gripped by the gospel who live for your glory and this we ask in

  2391. Jesus's name amen
