  1. Good morning, Watermark. That's really echoey.

  2. Good morning. My name is Alfie. If you don't know me, I help out with the university stuff around Watermark Church.

  3. And today we're continuing our series on preparing him room, making room.

  4. Last week we talked about making room in our hearts for Jesus.

  5. And today I want to talk about forgiveness.

  6. I think there's so many things to say about forgiveness.

  7. If I was to start now, I'd probably be done around Wednesday.

  8. So I'm not going to try to say everything.

  9. I'm going to try and just look at what forgiveness looks like when God forgives us, when God forgives his people.

  10. And so I'm going to start by giving you guys a very practical, tangible thing to do with forgiveness.

  11. I'm sorry if I don't talk about the things that you want me to talk about.

  12. And I hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me.

  13. There are many things.

  14. And, you know, early on this year in October, Evelyn came and she did some workshops on forgiveness.

  15. I know many of you guys were there.

  16. And she left behind some books and some resources.

  17. And so if you guys, after this, are intrigued and you want to know more about forgiveness and what that looks like when we're forgiving other people and other people are forgiving us, there will be some books.

  18. And Sylvie will be helping you guys with that.

  19. But for now, I'm just going to keep it simple.

  20. I'm going to talk about why Jesus came.

  21. Jesus came to forgive.

  22. He came to forgive us of our sins.

  23. And I think that Christmas time, you know, we gather around with our families.

  24. We get together.

  25. And there are many opportunities for forgiveness.

  26. Because we see that sibling that we haven't seen in a while.

  27. And, you know, back in March, we had this argument.

  28. And we haven't talked to each other since.

  29. And now, all of a sudden, we need to have that confrontation.

  30. Or, with the kids being home, they're just always fighting and you're trying to teach them forgiveness.

  31. And people think that Christmas is a great time for forgiveness.

  32. And I think it is.

  33. But I think Christmas is also a great time for remembering the forgiveness that Christ offers us.

  34. There are some times when I think about forgiveness, and I think that it's incredibly simple.

  35. And other times I think about it some more and I realize it's very complicated.

  36. And there are times that I overcomplicate forgiveness, and there are times that I oversimplify it.

  37. And I think our confusion, I think my confusion about forgiveness comes from the way that, you know, I was taught forgiveness as a child.

  38. I have a younger brother.

  39. And as children, we were always fighting.

  40. So we'd get into arguments.

  41. And depending on the day, it might escalate.

  42. And, you know, punches would be thrown.

  43. Kicks would be thrown.

  44. And my mother would come in, and she would break up the fight.

  45. And she would find out who started it.

  46. And then she would say, it was usually me who started it.

  47. She would say to me, Alfie, now you need to forgive your, you need to apologize to your brother.

  48. And I'd say, no, I'm sorry.

  49. And then she'd say, no, say it clearly.

  50. And I'd say, I'm sorry.

  51. She'd say, what are you sorry for?

  52. And, you know, I'd have to explain.

  53. And then she'd turn to my brother and say, hey, now, Jojo, you need to forgive your brother.

  54. My brother would say, I forgive you.

  55. And then my mother would make sure that this forgiveness and this reconciliation happened.

  56. And she said, now you guys need to give each other a hug.

  57. Now, in those situations, the last thing I wanted to do was to hug my brother.

  58. The last thing he wanted to do was to hug me.

  59. Because I wasn't really sorry.

  60. And he hadn't really forgiven me.

  61. But we did it anyways.

  62. Because if we didn't, there'd be more trouble.

  63. And, you know, I think sometimes we do this.

  64. And, you know, I talked to my parents about this yesterday over lunch.

  65. And, you know, they said that, you know, when you're a parent, you know, you make do with what you've got.

  66. And that's what they did.

  67. And so I'm not going to try and, you know, berate you parents for teaching forgiveness badly.

  68. But I think there's so many things in our lives that skew the way that we view forgiveness.

  69. The way in which we forgive each other.

  70. I think, you know, the way I was taught forgiveness in those stressful moments as a seven-year-old.

  71. Was to grit my teeth and to forgive and to put it out of my mind and to get on with life.

  72. But as we grow, I think conflicts become a bit more complex.

  73. It's not he hit me and she said I smell funny.

  74. We go and we have interactions with different people and they hurt us in different ways.

  75. And, you know, we learn different things about forgiveness from our different cultures, you know.

  76. I think forgiveness in Texas is very different from forgiveness in Taiwan.

  77. All right?

  78. And you come to Hong Kong and in my life where I'm not really Chinese and I'm not really Western and I'm not really African.

  79. Forgiveness just became this really huge confusing mess.

  80. Forgiveness.

  81. I think that some of us grow up and we're told that forgiveness is actually a bad thing.

  82. It's a weakness if we forgive.

  83. You know, that when we are wronged that we should hold it against other people.

  84. Right?

  85. That actually holding a grudge is fantastic because it means that, you know, we can get something from them later.

  86. There's these ads on the MTR and on TV.

  87. It's got Alan Tam, an old canto pop star there with his friends.

  88. And the advertisement says it's a PSA for prostate cancer and it says, real men protect their assets.

  89. And I think that's the most Hong Kong ad ever.

  90. I love it.

  91. But I think that line, real men protect their assets, is a lot of the way some of us, we think about forgiveness.

  92. You know, forgiveness is giving up our assets.

  93. And if we're going to protect our assets, we're going to hold our grudges.

  94. We're going to withhold forgiveness.

  95. Because that's going to give us profit sometime down the line.

  96. You know, one day, you know, this person's misdemeanor against me is going to come in useful when I'm in a sticky situation.

  97. At other times, I think we make forgiveness to be something really, really light and really cheap, really flippant.

  98. Where, you know, we forgive everybody for no real misdemeanor.

  99. And we forgive them for huge things without even giving a thought.

  100. You know, we say that love and peace and harmony are these ideals and they need to be, you know, maintained at any cost.

  101. And so we say, I'm going to forgive even though I haven't really dealt with this conflict in my heart.

  102. I haven't really dealt with it with this person.

  103. We say, I forgive not because we've forgiven, but because we have this idol of peace and harmony that we're going to chase after and we're going to serve no matter the cost.

  104. And while it seems very nice that we've forgiven, we realize that under these layers of plasters of forgiveness, there's hurt and there's wounds which have gone untreated.

  105. You know, Watermark, the way that we interact with God, who God is should be changing and it should be reaching and transforming our lives.

  106. But many times I think I do this, where I take my experiences from my life and I put them on God.

  107. I paint Jesus with the brush that I've received from other people.

  108. You know, we look at God and we think that he's like our parents who for 15 years have been dangling this misdemeanor over our heads to ensure our compliance,

  109. to ensure that we do things the way that they want.

  110. Or we walk through life assuming that God's going to forgive us all the time.

  111. After all, it's his job, right?

  112. I'll do whatever I want and I know that if I come and say, sorry, God will forgive me.

  113. And on one hand, we have God who is this tyrant who's just waiting for us to mess up so he can crush us with a hammer.

  114. And on the other side, we've got a God who's nothing more than an impotent genie who's just there to make us feel good, to soothe our emotional state.

  115. And, you know, I think as I look out here, I don't think that many of you are on either one of those extremes.

  116. But we find ourselves somewhere in the middle, somewhere in between those things.

  117. And even the middle can be a dangerous place.

  118. I know that the way that I interact with God puts me in a very unhelpful middle place.

  119. Because, you know, I know that God will forgive me.

  120. I know he loves me and that he forgives me.

  121. I also know that God takes sin seriously.

  122. And so there are times when I think that, you know, I can be forgiven for my small sins.

  123. You know, the little white lies, you know, the candy I stole from the shop as a child.

  124. God can forgive me for those things.

  125. But, you know, the big things like, you know, knowingly letting your colleague get fired for a mistake that you made or maybe an affair.

  126. God can never forgive those things.

  127. Or sometimes I feel like God can forgive me and he has forgiven me for all the things I did before I became a Christian.

  128. But all the things I've done since then, and I am responsible for those.

  129. But I need to find a way to earn his grace.

  130. I need to find a way to earn his forgiveness.

  131. I need forgiveness.

  132. We need forgiveness.

  133. We all need forgiveness from God.

  134. It's this longing that I think that God has put in our hearts for us to be right with him.

  135. For us to have a right relationship with him.

  136. And that's why Jesus comes.

  137. Jesus comes to fulfill that longing in our hearts for forgiveness.

  138. We're given a child at Christmas.

  139. We're given the Son of God.

  140. This man who would grow and who would do amazing things to ensure that his children, that those who put faith in him, do receive forgiveness.

  141. Who are made right with God.

  142. Who are brought into that relationship.

  143. That's not here.

  144. He didn't come to, you know, make us feel good.

  145. To feel warm and fuzzy because of Christmas time.

  146. He didn't come to leave us with resentment in our hearts.

  147. But he came to forgive.

  148. He came to bring hope and joy.

  149. He came to give life with his forgiveness.

  150. And so today, we're going to look at the story of the paralytic in Mark chapter 2.

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  151. And I really want you guys to see that God is able to forgive.

  152. That he's willing to forgive.

  153. That he loves to forgive.

  154. And that when he forgives, he doesn't offer it by itself.

  155. But he offers with it joy.

  156. He offers with it hope.

  157. And if you've been around church, you've probably heard the story.

  158. Especially if you grew up in the church.

  159. And it's a great one because it has everything.

  160. It's got suspense.

  161. It's got adventure.

  162. It's got friendship.

  163. It's got a happy ending.

  164. It's really one of these great stories that is really nice to tell little children.

  165. But I think as we hear this story so many times, a lot of the significance is lost on us.

  166. And I think even as we think about forgiveness, we forget actually how deep and meaningful forgiveness is.

  167. As I read around this topic and reading different commentaries, I found that there are so many different focuses that different people took.

  168. There's one author who spent a lot of time talking about these friends.

  169. These man's friends and their bravery.

  170. And doing property destruction.

  171. And destroying a roof so that his friend could get in.

  172. And their bravery was really the star of the story.

  173. And I read another writer who said that actually, you know, the roofs are made of sticks and mud.

  174. So actually, it's not a big deal to break it because you can fix it.

  175. And if there's heavy rain, you'd have to repair your roof anyway.

  176. So them tearing up the roof was not a big deal.

  177. There are a lot of people who read these stories and they find different bits to focus on.

  178. And I think the guys that I read where it captured me, which spoke to me, were the guys that focused in on God's forgiveness.

  179. That focused in on Jesus forgiving this paralyzed man.

  180. So let's start by looking at this.

  181. It starts with Jesus and he's returned from Capernaum.

  182. And he's at home.

  183. And many people have gathered there.

  184. Many people have got together and they're crowded in and they're listening to Jesus.

  185. It says that Jesus is preaching them the word.

  186. We don't know exactly what he was saying, but it must have been good because there was a huge crowd.

  187. The house was filled.

  188. The door was filled.

  189. And the only way that these guys could bring their friend was through the roof.

  190. These four men, they come and they carry them, his friend, up the stairs, which would have been outside the side of the house.

  191. And they go to the roof and they begin dismantling it.

  192. And they lower him down into the room where Jesus is teaching.

  193. And the Bible says that Jesus looks at them and he sees their faith.

  194. And he says, son, your sins are forgiven.

  195. It's interesting.

  196. You know, in the Bible, you can see other places where faith plays an important part in God's miracles.

  197. In Mark chapter 5, you see there's a woman who's been bleeding.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  198. And when Jesus heals her, he turns and says, woman, your faith has made you well.

  199. Go in peace.

  200. But responding to their faith in this circumstance, Jesus says, your sins are forgiven.

  201. The faith of this man, the faith of his friends is what causes God to respond to them.

  202. And I think this is where the average church person says, great, forgiveness.

  203. We've received it.

  204. You know, let's go for the healing and move on.

  205. But instead, this is where the scribes come into the narrative.

  206. If you read this account in Luke, it says that they were Pharisees.

  207. And that will probably give you a little bit of the idea of what they were there for.

  208. You know, they weren't really listening to Jesus because they wanted hope,

  209. because they wanted to hear the good news.

  210. They were listening to Jesus because they were trying to catch him out.

  211. They were trying to figure out what it is they could do to accuse this man,

  212. to get him out of their way.

  213. The scribes come in, and they say, well, they don't say anything.

  214. Perhaps they're shocked at what Jesus has said,

  215. because by saying, son, your sins are forgiven, he claimed to be God.

  216. By saying, son, your sins are forgiven, he said,

  217. I have the authority to make these kinds of announcements.

  218. And in shock, they don't say anything, but in their hearts, they question.

  219. In their hearts, they ask.

  220. And you look in verse 6 and 7, it says,

  221. they say, why does this man speak like that?

  222. He's blaspheming.

  223. Who can forgive sins but God alone?

  224. And I think with that last question, who can forgive sins but God alone,

  225. they're beginning to get somewhere.

  226. They're beginning to get to the heart of what Jesus is doing here on this day.

  227. Jesus goes on, and he speaks to them.

  228. And he says, why do you doubt?

  229. Why don't you believe?

  230. Mark tells us that in his spirit, he knew the words that he was saying.

  231. And, you know, I think I would have really liked to be there,

  232. because, you know, we're in this crowded room,

  233. and there are people all over the place.

  234. The roof begins, you know, being picked apart.

  235. But somebody's lowered down on his bed,

  236. and Jesus says, son, your sins are forgiven.

  237. And then he turns to the Pharisees,

  238. and he says, why don't you believe?

  239. Now, for anyone else there,

  240. that would have been a very, very strange transition,

  241. from forgiving this man to talking to those people over there.

  242. I think that people would have probably been very confused

  243. about what was going on.

  244. But the Pharisees knew.

  245. They knew that when Jesus spoke to them,

  246. he wasn't just looking at their faces,

  247. that he was looking into their hearts.

  248. That he was looking, and he saw the doubt

  249. that was in their hearts.

  250. Jesus asks a puzzling question.

  251. He says, is it easier to forgive these man's sins,

  252. or is it easier to heal him?

  253. Is it easier to say your sins are forgiven,

  254. or to say get up and walk?

  255. He follows that by saying,

  256. that you may know that the Son of Man

  257. has authority to forgive sins.

  258. I say to you, pick up your bed,

  259. and go home.

  260. And the man does.

  261. And the crowds are amazed,

  262. and they probably leave in this amazing little party.

  263. The scribes probably slink off,

  264. having been beaten with their tail between their legs,

  265. and the disciples probably give each other high fives,

  266. very excited, another miracle.

  267. And the paralytic and his friends,

  268. for the first time in a long time,

  269. walk off together.

  270. And that's a great story.

  271. It's forgiveness,

  272. and there's healing.

  273. And everyone except for the Pharisees

  274. is really a winner.

  275. But I really want to look at a couple of things

  276. in this story that I think will unpack

  277. and help us figure out what it is

  278. that forgiveness is like

  279. when God forgives us,

  280. when God forgives his people,

  281. when God forgives his children.

  282. And the first thing is to do with the man.

  283. The Bible says that in the beginning,

  284. in the fall,

  285. that Adam rebelled against God.

  286. He ate the fruit from the tree,

  287. and through his rebellion,

  288. through his sin,

  289. sickness and death and decay

  290. enter the world.

  291. The Bible says that because of sin,

  292. we have sickness and death.

  293. And in this time,

  294. it was very common for people to believe

  295. that if somebody had any kind of serious sickness

  296. or serious injury,

  297. that it was because of a sin in their life.

  298. And so this man,

  299. having been paralyzed,

  300. is coming to God.

  301. And I think that he felt that

  302. his paralysis was a result of his sin.

  303. If he didn't think it,

  304. maybe his friends did,

  305. but definitely the Pharisees.

  306. They'd have looked at this man

  307. and they'd have seen this guy is a sinner

  308. because bad things only ever happen

  309. to sinful people.

  310. Now, we don't know why it is

  311. that this man was actually sick.

  312. The Bible doesn't tell us that.

  313. But it does tell us

  314. that when Jesus looks at him,

  315. he says,

  316. your sins are forgiven.

  317. When Jesus looks at him,

  318. he thinks,

  319. and he says,

  320. that the most important thing

  321. in your life right now

  322. is for you to have a right relationship

  323. and right standing with God.

  324. in the midst of his poverty

  325. and his paralysis,

  326. in the midst of all the things

  327. in his life,

  328. Jesus says,

  329. you need to be forgiven.

  330. And I think this man

  331. would have been overjoyed by that

  332. because he's paralyzed.

  333. He couldn't go to the temple

  334. and offer sacrifices

  335. to make right his relationship with God.

  336. As a guy who was paralyzed,

  337. he could do nothing.

  338. He was helpless.

  339. He was completely at God's mercy.

  340. And so when Jesus says,

  341. son, your sins are forgiven,

  342. he's giving this guy hope.

  343. He's giving him life.

  344. He's giving him joy.

  345. He's giving him something

  346. that he could not have obtained

  347. for himself in any other way

  348. other than God coming

  349. and saying to this man,

  350. your sins are forgiven.

  351. I think that we are a lot like this man.

  352. The Bible says that we are a lot like this man,

  353. that we spiritually are paralyzed,

  354. that spiritually there isn't a lot we can do.

  355. But in this story,

  356. we see what God offers to this man.

  357. He offers it to us as well.

  358. He offers forgiveness,

  359. hope,

  360. and life.

  361. He's saying that you may be poor

  362. and starving and helpless,

  363. but here is forgiveness.

  364. He's saying,

  365. I can give you hope.

  366. Jesus is saying to us

  367. that he can be the solution

  368. to our heart's deepest problem.

  369. And people respond in different ways.

  370. In this story,

  371. we see that the scribes

  372. that they don't believe.

  373. And their response is one of two responses

  374. that I want to look at.

  375. But I also think it's interesting

  376. that Jesus asks this question,

  377. what is it easier to say?

  378. Is it easier to forgive

  379. or is it easier to heal?

  380. Now again,

  381. as I was reading about this,

  382. many people have many different answers.

  383. Some people will say

  384. that actually the healing is harder

  385. and they give their explanations why.

  386. Other people say forgiving is harder

  387. and they give explanations why.

  388. But I think that

  389. when Jesus asks this question,

  390. he's saying

  391. they're both hard.

  392. Today,

  393. standing before you guys,

  394. with all the medical technology

  395. in the world,

  396. I cannot heal a paralyzed person.

  397. And I'm no closer to doing that

  398. than I am

  399. to forgiving your sins.

  400. I can't forgive the sins

  401. that you have done against God.

  402. By asking this question,

  403. Jesus is saying

  404. that both these things

  405. are hard things.

  406. Both these things

  407. are difficult things.

  408. Both of these things

  409. are things

  410. that God

  411. must do.

  412. God must be the one

  413. who forgives sins.

  414. And God is the one

  415. who heals this man

  416. from his paralysis.

  417. But these guys,

  418. they doubt.

  419. The Pharisees doubt

  420. his ability

  421. to forgive.

  422. They doubt

  423. his authority

  424. to forgive.

  425. They doubt

  426. God's love

  427. and mercy.

  428. They doubt

  429. God's grace.

  430. Their response

  431. is doubt

  432. and I think

  433. sometimes

  434. my response

  435. is doubt

  436. as well.

  437. I doubt

  438. that God

  439. can forgive

  440. all of my sins.

  441. I doubt

  442. that

  443. God

  444. does it

  445. willingly.

  446. The Bible

  447. says that

  448. if you have faith,

  449. if you're like this guy

  450. and his friends,

  451. if you have faith

  452. that God

  453. will do

  454. what he says,

  455. then your sins

  456. are forgiven.

  457. The same words

  458. that God

  459. says to this man,

  460. son,

  461. your sins

  462. are forgiven,

  463. he says to us,

  464. son,

  465. daughter,

  466. your sins

  467. are forgiven.

  468. And for me,

  469. I think this has been

  470. a very,

  471. it's been a difficult

  472. story for me

  473. to learn.

  474. It's been a difficult

  475. journey

  476. in learning this.

  477. When I was

  478. about 10 years old,

  479. my mother

  480. was diagnosed

  481. with MS,

  482. multiple sclerosis.

  483. And from the time

  484. I was about 11,

  485. she's been in a wheelchair.

  486. And,

  487. you know,

  488. in those times,

  489. I think it was very stressful

  490. for our family,

  491. trying to figure out

  492. what was going on,

  493. trying to adjust

  494. to life.

  495. And we sought,

  496. you know,

  497. medical help

  498. from all over the place.

  499. And one day,

  500. one of my aunt's friends

  501. came and visited.

  502. And she came,

  503. she sat us down at the table

  504. and she talked to us

  505. about God

  506. and his power to heal.

  507. And one thing

  508. she said is that,

  509. you know,

  510. your mother might be sick

  511. because of some sins

  512. that you haven't confessed.

  513. Some sins that God

  514. hasn't forgiven you for.

  515. Right?

  516. And that stuck out in my mind.

  517. And she said,

  518. you know,

  519. is there any sin

  520. that you guys have confessed?

  521. That you guys have not confessed?

  522. And I sat there

  523. and I was quiet

  524. because I was definitely,

  525. definitely not going

  526. to admit to any of this,

  527. you know,

  528. some of the things

  529. that I hadn't confessed yet.

  530. But I went to my room

  531. and I prayed.

  532. And I prayed

  533. and I asked for forgiveness

  534. and I confessed sins

  535. that I'd done.

  536. I confessed sins

  537. that I'm not sure

  538. if I'd done.

  539. I confessed sins

  540. that I'd,

  541. you know,

  542. I made up sins

  543. to confess

  544. because I wanted my mother

  545. to get better.

  546. I confessed all these things

  547. and my mother

  548. was still sick.

  549. My mother was still unwell.

  550. And I think for many years

  551. I struggled with

  552. whether God loved me

  553. or whether God truly

  554. forgave my sins.

  555. I think it's only

  556. been in the past couple years

  557. that I'm beginning to see

  558. that God does forgive.

  559. And even though my mother

  560. isn't well yet,

  561. that when I pray

  562. for my mom's healing

  563. I can pray with this certainty

  564. and this joy

  565. that while my mother

  566. is still in a wheelchair

  567. that the most important thing

  568. in our lives

  569. has been taken care of.

  570. That while there is

  571. still sickness

  572. that the disease of sin

  573. has been cured

  574. that God has forgiven her

  575. that God has forgiven

  576. that God has forgiven me.

  577. I think

  578. that we don't believe

  579. that God can forgive sometimes.

  580. In my life

  581. I'm learning

  582. every day

  583. that God

  584. does forgive

  585. that God

  586. will forgive.

  587. that he forgives

  588. our small sins

  589. and our big ones.

  590. You know

  591. and he's forgiven us

  592. for the sins

  593. that we're going to do

  594. tomorrow

  595. and next week.

  596. I love the response

  597. of this crowd

  598. because

  599. of what they rejoice in

  600. and what they're amazed at.

  601. In verse 12

  602. it says

  603. after the man

  604. got up

  605. it says

  606. that the crowds

  607. were all amazed

  608. and they glorified God

  609. saying that

  610. we never saw

  611. anything like this.

  612. that we have never

  613. seen anything

  614. like this before

  615. and this is why

  616. we're going to rejoice

  617. and praise

  618. and glorify God.

  619. Now

  620. I don't think

  621. that they

  622. rejoiced

  623. because

  624. the man

  625. was healed.

  626. They had no shortage

  627. of opportunities

  628. to see people

  629. getting healed.

  630. God had used

  631. prophets

  632. in the Old Testament

  633. to heal people.

  634. Jesus had done it.

  635. In Mark

  636. even before

  637. we get to this

  638. chapter 2

  639. there are two

  640. instances

  641. of different people

  642. being healed.

  643. There's a guy

  644. who's exorcised

  645. who has an evil

  646. spirit cast out of him

  647. and there's a whole

  648. crowd of people

  649. who come to Jesus

  650. and Jesus

  651. heals all their

  652. sicknesses and ailments.

  653. These people had seen

  654. Jesus healing people

  655. before.

  656. I don't think

  657. that is why

  658. that they rejoice.

  659. I don't think

  660. that people are amazed

  661. that the roof

  662. got destroyed.

  663. I don't know

  664. why they would

  665. glorify God

  666. for that.

  667. But I think

  668. they're amazed

  669. because up to

  670. this point

  671. forgiveness

  672. meant

  673. taking a sacrifice

  674. to the temple.

  675. It meant

  676. the blood

  677. of an animal

  678. and it meant

  679. going again

  680. and again

  681. and again

  682. for your sins

  683. to be forgiven.

  684. I think that this

  685. crowd

  686. saw

  687. in this story

  688. that they saw

  689. in this interaction

  690. between Jesus

  691. and the paralyzed

  692. man

  693. forgiveness.

  694. they saw

  695. the hope

  696. that brought

  697. to their lives.

  698. They saw

  699. God forgiving

  700. and God

  701. proving

  702. that he had

  703. the authority

  704. and the love

  705. and the grace

  706. and the mercy

  707. to forgive

  708. our sins.

  709. so what about

  710. us?

  711. What is our

  712. response

  713. when God

  714. says

  715. our sins

  716. are forgiven?

  717. Do we

  718. doubt

  719. or

  720. do we

  721. believe?

  722. Do we

  723. respond with

  724. hope

  725. and joy?

  726. Do we

  727. respond with

  728. sadness

  729. and despair?

  730. I

  731. really

  732. enjoy it.

  733. I like

  734. what Matthew

  735. has to say

  736. when he

  737. talks about

  738. this interaction.

  739. It will be up

  740. there in a second.

  741. In Matthew 2

  742. when Jesus

  743. says

  744. to the paralytic

  745. he says

  746. take heart

  747. my son

  748. your sins

  749. are forgiven.

  750. Take heart.

  751. Different translations

  752. say

  753. have courage

  754. cheer up

  755. be of good

  756. cheer

  757. that's the

  758. King James.

  759. but

  760. Jesus

  761. is calling

  762. for a

  763. response

  764. of joy

  765. with

  766. forgiveness.

  767. He's saying

  768. that forgiveness

  769. isn't just

  770. something that

  771. okay we're

  772. forgiven

  773. and we're

  774. going to

  775. go and

  776. be sad

  777. for the

  778. rest of

  779. our lives

  780. because

  781. you know

  782. we're not

  783. allowed to

  784. do fun

  785. things.

  786. Jesus

  787. is saying

  788. to this

  789. man

  790. that this

  791. forgiveness

  792. is not

  793. just

  794. life for

  795. you.

  796. It's not

  797. just

  798. rightness

  799. with God.

  800. but it

  801. should be

  802. a source

  803. of hope

  804. of joy

  805. of happiness

  806. and you know

  807. I think

  808. for the first

  809. time this

  810. guy is

  811. in right

  812. standing

  813. with his

  814. heavenly father

  815. but he doesn't

  816. just say

  817. take heart

  818. he says

  819. he calls him

  820. son

  821. he says

  822. child

  823. he brings

  824. him

  825. into this

  826. family

  827. forgiveness

  828. forgiveness

  829. isn't just

  830. the wrong

  831. things that

  832. were done

  833. cancelled

  834. forgiveness

  835. isn't just

  836. bad things

  837. put under

  838. the carpet

  839. it's a new

  840. identity

  841. as God's

  842. children

  843. it's a new

  844. hope

  845. new life

  846. in being

  847. with Christ

  848. imagine

  849. imagine for a

  850. moment that

  851. you're a thief

  852. you're a thief

  853. of the worst

  854. kind

  855. you've stolen

  856. candy from

  857. children

  858. you've stolen

  859. from museums

  860. you've stolen

  861. gold and

  862. diamonds and

  863. billions of

  864. dollars

  865. and eventually

  866. you're caught

  867. and you're put

  868. on trial

  869. you're put on

  870. trial and

  871. the judge looks

  872. at all these

  873. things that you've

  874. stolen and he

  875. thinks

  876. this is

  877. ridiculous

  878. we're not

  879. going to put

  880. you in prison

  881. we're going to

  882. sentence you

  883. to death

  884. and so you

  885. go and you

  886. sit in your

  887. cell and

  888. you're waiting

  889. for the

  890. assigned date

  891. and they

  892. bring you

  893. your last

  894. meal

  895. and the

  896. guy sets

  897. it before

  898. you

  899. you've

  900. asked for

  901. jelly beans

  902. and ice

  903. cream

  904. but as

  905. you look

  906. at it

  907. you realize

  908. that

  909. your death

  910. that's coming

  911. is too

  912. much to

  913. bear

  914. you can't

  915. even stomach

  916. at it

  917. you push

  918. it away

  919. and you're

  920. carried

  921. and you're

  922. led up to

  923. the gallows

  924. and you

  925. know the

  926. executioner is

  927. there and

  928. he puts

  929. the noose

  930. around your

  931. neck

  932. and you

  933. know just

  934. you catch a

  935. glimpse of

  936. your family

  937. over there

  938. and you

  939. try and

  940. hide your

  941. face from

  942. your children

  943. and the

  944. guy with the

  945. big trumpet

  946. and the

  947. scroll starts

  948. reading off

  949. your charges

  950. and says

  951. for these

  952. crimes of

  953. stealing candy

  954. and billions

  955. of dollars

  956. you're sentenced

  957. to death

  958. and he turns

  959. to the

  960. executioner

  961. who's about

  962. to pull

  963. the lever

  964. but then

  965. there's this

  966. commotion

  967. there's this

  968. commotion

  969. there's a man

  970. who's running

  971. from the

  972. castle

  973. he's running

  974. from the

  975. castle

  976. to the

  977. king

  978. and he's

  979. running

  980. and he's

  981. running

  982. and he's

  983. running

  984. and he goes to the crowds

  985. and he comes

  986. and he comes closer

  987. and you realize that

  988. this isn't a messenger

  989. this is the king's son

  990. the king's son is coming

  991. with a message

  992. and he says

  993. your sins

  994. are forgiven

  995. imagine your relief

  996. imagine your joy

  997. imagine what it's like

  998. to be on the brink

  999. of death

  1000. but the king's son

  1001. not a messenger

  1002. the king sends

  1003. his own son

  1004. to say that

  1005. you're forgiven

  1006. that the noose

  1007. is going to be

  1008. removed from your neck

  1009. that you are free

  1010. that you can be

  1011. with your family

  1012. that you can go

  1013. and enjoy

  1014. jelly beans

  1015. and ice cream

  1016. that your life

  1017. is going to be

  1018. transformed

  1019. because

  1020. of the king

  1021. forgiveness is good news

  1022. forgiveness is amazing news

  1023. forgiveness is why

  1024. Jesus

  1025. came

1026. this is why we celebrate

  1027. Christmas

1028. because God sent his son

  1029. to pay the price

  1030. for our sin

1031. because God sent his son

  1032. to say to us

1033. while on the brink of death

  1034. your sins

  1035. are forgiven

  1036. the story

  1037. it offers forgiveness

  1038. and it calls us

  1039. to be a part

  1040. of God's family

1041. but it also calls us

  1042. to have faith

  1043. the former paralytic

  1044. and his friends

  1045. they set an example

  1046. for us

  1047. in faith

  1048. and it's not that

  1049. they had to do

  1050. some amazing feat

  1051. like climb a mountain

  1052. or whatever amazing things

1053. you do to demonstrate faith

1054. but all they had to do

  1055. was come

  1056. they came

  1057. not knowing

  1058. what God

  1059. was going to do

  1060. they came

1061. because they had a hunch

  1062. because they

  1063. they had hope

  1064. they had faith

  1065. that this Jesus

  1066. could do something

  1067. for their paralyzed friend

  1068. this Jesus

  1069. do something

  1070. and I think

  1071. the Bible says

  1072. the Bible says that

  1073. it says come

  1074. come with faith

  1075. come trusting

  1076. that God

  1077. will do the things

  1078. that he promises

  1079. come trusting

  1080. that on the cross

  1081. Jesus has paid

  1082. for your sins

  1083. come

  1084. faith

  1085. because Jesus

  1086. has done

  1087. what it takes

  1088. to forgive

  1089. your sins

  1090. this story

  1091. this paralyzed man

  1092. Jesus healing them

  1093. and his interaction

  1094. with the Pharisees

  1095. it calls us

  1096. to

  1097. live a life

  1098. transformed

  1099. by God's forgiveness

  1100. to live a life

  1101. of faith

  1102. I think we're all

  1103. in different places

  1104. spiritually

  1105. emotionally

  1106. you know

  1107. I don't know

  1108. what your week

  1109. has been like

  1110. what it's been like

  1111. at the office

  1112. or

  1113. what tensions

  1114. you have at home

  1115. the people

1116. who have been hurting you

  1117. the people

  1118. who have been

  1119. offending you

  1120. but I know that

  1121. 2,000 years ago

1122. a king sent his son

  1123. to give forgiveness

  1124. and freedom

  1125. to give us joy

  1126. that will change

  1127. the way that

  1128. we look at God

  1129. that changes the way

1130. that we relate to God

  1131. and that flows out

  1132. and changes

  1133. the ways in which

  1134. we interact with people

1135. are we looking to God

  1136. for our forgiveness

1137. are we looking to Jesus

  1138. and

  1139. putting

  1140. our hope in him

  1141. or do we

  1142. do we doubt

  1143. do we doubt

  1144. that when God says

  1145. I forgive you

  1146. that

  1147. we can follow through

  1148. sometimes I do

  1149. sometimes I doubt

  1150. but this Christmas

1151. I want to invite you

  1152. to come and

  1153. to believe

  1154. have faith

  1155. to look at

  1156. Jesus in the manger

  1157. to look at him

  1158. healing this man

  1159. to look

  1160. at Jesus

  1161. on the cross

  1162. to look at Jesus

  1163. and to believe

  1164. that

  1165. that he's paid

  1166. the price

  1167. that he offers

  1168. forgiveness

  1169. that he offers
