  1. God, where are you?

  2. Do you even care?

  3. God, I've been looking for a job for months and months and months,

  4. and it seems like nothing is out there,

  5. and I'm pretty sure that if I don't find a job soon,

  6. my family is not going to be able to stay in our house

  7. because we can't afford rent anymore.

  8. Where are you?

  9. God, we just got back from the doctors,

  10. and the report doesn't look good.

  11. And if it was my health, that'd be one thing,

  12. but watching my kid have to go through that,

  13. I don't know if I can handle this.

  14. Do you even care, God?

  15. I think these two questions, God, where are you,

  16. and God, do you care,

  17. are at the center of a lot of our questions to God and about God.

  18. I would guess that pretty much everyone in this room

  19. at some point in their lives has asked those questions

  20. in some form or another.

  21. God, where are you?

  22. God, do you care?

  23. There's questions that reveal to us the fact,

  24. or that show the fact that we live in a broken world.

  25. We're broken people surrounded by brokenness,

  26. and we want a place of safety and a place of refuge

  27. in the midst of that brokenness.

  28. We cry out,

  29. God, where are you?

  30. And if you're here,

  31. do you care?

  32. Do you care about these storms

  33. that are happening in our lives?

  34. Are you with us through them?

  35. And in the Christmas season,

  36. these questions become even more pronounced

  37. because we talk about things like hope and peace

  38. and love and joy.

  39. And they're such wonderful, beautiful ideas,

  40. but for so many people in our world,

  41. they're things that are dreams and not realities.

  42. And yet, the Bible tells us

  43. that there's something that happened,

  44. something amazing that happened on Christmas.

  45. that can give us true love, joy, hope, peace.

  46. And so today, we're going to look at a story

  47. from the book of Mark that you just heard read

  48. about Jesus and his disciples on a boat.

  49. And we're going to hear his disciples ask the same question,

  50. do you even care?

  51. And we're going to see what Jesus' answer to them is

  52. and how that connects to our lives today.

  53. And spoiler alert, he does care,

  54. and that makes a huge difference.

  55. So my name is Eric.

  56. Welcome to Watermark Church.

  57. We're so glad to have you here with us today.

  58. If you have your Bible or bulletin,

  59. you can flip open to the story.

  60. And the first thing I want us to see in this story

  61. about Jesus and the disciples on the boat

  62. is a set of contrasting reactions.

  63. Contrasting reactions.

  64. So if you're following the storyline,

  65. Jesus has been teaching.

  66. He's been teaching and teaching and teaching.

  67. There's so many crowds that he has to go out

  68. on a boat on the lake

  69. so that he can speak to the crowds

  70. and not get smushed or wet.

  71. And he finishes teaching,

  72. and he says to his disciples,

  73. all right, let's go across the other side of the lake.

  74. You know, the crowds are exhausting.

  75. Let's get some rest.

  76. Let's go away.

  77. And the disciples say, all right.

  78. The disciples, they're Jesus' followers.

  79. A lot of them are fishermen.

  80. They know this lake like the back of their hand.

  81. A lot of them have spent thousands of nights

  82. out on this exact lake fishing again and again and again.

  83. And so for them, a trip across shouldn't be a big deal.

  84. Jesus says, let's get in the boat.

  85. Let's go across.

  86. They say, sure.

  87. They head out to sea.

  88. And as they get to sea, a great storm hits.

  89. Now, like I said, these guys were fishermen.

  90. They had been in the sea before.

  91. They had probably faced lots of storms before.

  92. They were experienced in facing storms.

  93. But this one wasn't just any storm.

  94. It was a great storm, a furious storm.

  95. I think in life, each of us faces storms.

  96. Each of us faces difficulties and issues and problems,

  97. whether that's in our job, in our relationships.

  98. Jesus and his disciples on the boat, they faced a literal storm.

  99. There was rain splashing down from the sky.

  100. There were waves that were crashing over the edge of the boat.

  101. The boat was getting full of water.

  102. And the disciples were doing everything they possibly could to keep the boat upright and keep everyone on it alive.

  103. They, obviously, are terrified, as I think any of us would be in that situation.

  104. When we think about boats today, we think about, like, huge cruise liners that can face any storm.

  105. These guys were not on that.

  106. They were on a fishing boat that was maybe as long as this stage right here and made out of wood.

  107. And there were waves coming up, crashing over.

  108. I'm sure they thought it was just a matter of time until one of the waves split their boat in half.

  109. They were scrambling.

  110. They were panicking.

  111. They were afraid.

  112. Can you relate to the disciples?

  113. Being in a situation in life where you're doing everything you can to fix it, to make it better.

  114. And yet, no matter how hard you try, it seems like it just keeps getting worse.

  115. And there is nothing that you are able to do to fix it.

  116. And yet, they keep trying and keep trying.

  117. And if we look, we see a contrasting reaction in Jesus.

  118. The disciples are panicked.

  119. The disciples are rushing and hurrying and trying to make everything better.

  120. And Jesus is napping.

  121. How is he able to do that?

  122. That's my big question when I read this story.

  123. How on earth is Jesus able to nap in this situation?

  124. For me, I remember when we first got married, my wife and I had a big discussion because I love blackout curtains in the bedroom.

  125. Because I like it pitch black when I sleep.

  126. I like quiet and dark and calm and a soft mattress.

  127. No commotion.

  128. No waves splashing in on me.

  129. No people running around screaming.

  130. No my life being in danger.

  131. I like blackout curtains.

  132. I like blackout curtains.

  133. I like a soft mattress underneath me.

  134. Jesus did not have those things on the boat.

  135. And yet, he was sleeping calmly.

  136. How is he able to do that?

  137. When I think about my life, back to my desire for comfort when I sleep, I realize that as much as the environment and the darkness and the quiet helps me sleep,

  138. there's actually one much bigger thing that can get in the way of me sleeping.

  139. Stress and anxiety.

  140. If I have a fight with a friend, I can lay in bed awake for hours.

  141. Replaying the conversation in my head over and over.

  142. I should have said this.

  143. Can't believe I said that.

  144. Next time, I'm going to fix it.

  145. Next time I see this friend.

  146. Maybe I should give them a call right now.

  147. No, they're probably asleep.

  148. Maybe I'll call them first thing in the morning tomorrow.

  149. But then when I call them, what should I say?

  150. And I replay everything in my head over and over and over because I'm stressed and I'm anxious.

  151. And stress and anxiety get in my way of sleeping.

  152. And I think something that we realize when we look at this story is the disciples are stressed and anxious.

  153. They're running around.

  154. They're afraid.

  155. They're trying to save their boat.

  156. And Jesus, in contrast to the disciples, has peace.

  157. He has rest in the midst of this raging, furious, massive storm.

  158. If you look at the original language, the word used to describe the storm is mega.

  159. It's a mega storm.

  160. And he's asleep on the boat.

  161. Because he has perfect faith in God's provision and protection of him during that time.

  162. When we were little kids, my brothers and I, we'd sleep in our beds.

  163. And in the middle of the night, if we woke up and we were scared, we would walk down to mom and dad's room.

  164. And we'd walk in there and we'd have our blanket and our pillow with us.

  165. We'd lie down on the floor next to them.

  166. And we'd be able to fall asleep.

  167. Even though it was less comfortable than our beds, we were around the most powerful people that we knew.

  168. And we knew that the most powerful people we knew loved us and would protect us in that moment.

  169. And so even though we were in less than ideal circumstances, we were on a hard floor instead of a soft bed,

  170. we were able to sleep soundly.

  171. Because we knew that we were safe and protected in the presence of mom and dad.

  172. And I think that's exactly what is happening with Jesus on the boat right here.

  173. The disciples are panicked.

  174. They don't know where God is right now.

  175. They don't know whether God cares about them.

  176. But Jesus does.

  177. Jesus knows that God has perfect love for him.

  178. And so he's able to lie down and sleep in the midst of the storm.

  179. While the disciples have a wrong reaction that leads to desperation,

  180. Jesus has a right understanding of God's love for him

  181. that allows him to lie down and get rest in the midst of the greatest storm that anyone on that boat had ever faced.

  182. And this contrasting reaction leads to a confused question.

  183. Because when the disciples look at Jesus' rest,

  184. they don't see perfect faith.

  185. They don't see confidence in God's provision.

  186. They see apathy.

  187. They look at Jesus and they don't think,

  188. oh, he's resting perfectly in God's love.

  189. They think he doesn't care about what happens to us.

  190. He doesn't care if we die.

  191. He just cares about his nap.

  192. And they go to him and they wake him.

  193. And they yell out,

  194. teacher, don't you care that we're all going to die?

  195. Now this is a ridiculous scenario, just by the way.

  196. The disciples are fishermen.

  197. They've been on this sea thousands of times.

  198. They've faced plenty of storms.

  199. They know what they're doing on the water.

  200. Jesus was trained as a carpenter.

  201. And in the storm,

  202. the fishermen on the boat

  203. come to get the carpenter to help them save the boat.

  204. If you want a little modern equivalent of this,

  205. imagine that you work on the trading floor at HSBC.

  206. And you look at your computer screen

  207. and all of a sudden everything goes red.

  208. And the markets are crashing

  209. and you have no idea what to do.

  210. And they're going down, down, down.

  211. And you're like,

  212. surely they're going to fix themselves.

  213. Any moment now, I hope?

  214. And they don't.

  215. They keep going down, down, down.

  216. And I'm pretty sure in Hong Kong,

  217. they have a fail-safe, right?

  218. That if the market goes down a certain amount,

  219. it's supposed to stop trading immediately.

  220. But you reach the fail-safe point

  221. and it just keeps going down, down, down.

  222. The market's down 20%.

  223. And you turn to your neighbor

  224. and you're like, what's going on?

  225. And they say, I don't know.

  226. And you look back and it's down 30%.

  227. And you try everything you can figure out

  228. to save your portfolio

  229. as you watch everything that you've been building up

  230. crumble to pieces.

  231. And then you think, I know what to do.

  232. I'm going to call Tobin.

  233. He can fix this.

  234. That's what the disciples did on the boat.

  235. The fishermen call up the carpenter

  236. to come save their boat.

  237. It's like the banker calling up the pastor

  238. to say, hey, fix this market crash.

  239. But here's the difference.

  240. The disciples knew that there was something special

  241. about Jesus.

  242. They knew that he was powerful

  243. in a way that none of them were.

  244. They knew that there was something unique about him

  245. that none of them had going for them.

  246. But you notice when they ask their question,

  247. they don't actually come to him

  248. and ask for help at first.

  249. They don't come and say, hey,

  250. can you do something about this situation?

  251. No, they come to him and they ask him

  252. the much more pressing question on their hearts,

  253. do you even care?

  254. Jesus, look at this situation.

  255. We're about to die.

  256. And how can you sleep through this?

  257. We thought you loved us.

  258. But now we know that maybe you don't.

  259. Because if you truly loved us,

  260. you'd obviously be doing something right now.

  261. They misinterpreted his response of faith

  262. as a response of apathy.

  263. And because of that,

  264. they didn't turn to him for help.

  265. They turned to him to find out

  266. whether he actually cared.

  267. And because they weren't confident

  268. of Jesus' love for them,

  269. because they weren't confident

  270. about the fact that Jesus cared about them,

  271. they were scrambling around in fear,

  272. anxiety, and stress,

  273. trying to fix the situation

  274. rather than turning to him,

  275. which would have been the simple solution

  276. if they had known that he cared about them.

  277. I think the same thing happens to us a lot of times.

  278. Something goes wrong at work.

  279. We maybe say like,

  280. God, please do something.

  281. And then we figure,

  282. he's not going to handle it.

  283. I got to do this on my own.

  284. And we go out,

  285. and we spend 90 hours a week at the office

  286. for the next couple weeks

  287. to try and fix everything that's just gone wrong.

  288. We don't trust that God's going to be good

  289. and that God's going to care for us.

  290. And we think,

  291. I have to take everything into my own hands.

  292. I have to fix it on my own.

  293. And so we take it into our own hands,

  294. and we don't turn to God to help us.

  295. We act just like the disciples,

  296. scrambling in fear and anxiety,

  297. rather than like Jesus,

  298. learning to rest in God's perfect care for us.

  299. And so the disciples,

  300. because they don't recognize Jesus cared for them,

  301. come to him,

  302. and they ask him the crucial question,

  303. do you even care?

  304. There's a problem with their question.

  305. The problem with their question

  306. is that they ignored the fact

  307. that Jesus was on the boat with them.

  308. Think about it.

  309. Jesus is on the boat with them.

  310. Which means even if we were in some hypothetical world

  311. where he didn't care at all

  312. about any of the other people on the boat,

  313. he still cares about what happens to the boat

  314. because whatever happens to the boat

  315. is going to happen to him too.

  316. By climbing onto the boat with the disciples,

  317. Jesus has linked his fate to their fate

  318. so that whatever happens to them

  319. happens to him as well.

  320. And he has to care about what happens to them

  321. because he is on the boat with them.

  322. The disciples question whether he cares for them

  323. because they've forgotten the fact

  324. that he is with them.

  325. They lose sight of the fact that he cares about them

  326. because they've lost sight of the fact

  327. that he is with them.

  328. You know, if he was standing on the shore

  329. or if he was walking on the water

  330. and this storm hit the boat,

  331. maybe they'd have some grounds for asking if he cared.

  332. But he's on the boat with them

  333. when the storm hits.

  334. His fate is tied to theirs.

  335. He has to care about them

  336. because he has become part of them

  337. by stepping on the boat with them.

  338. And so in response to the disciples' question,

  339. do you even care?

  340. Jesus gets up and he rebukes the wind and the waves.

  341. He says, cut it out, and they do.

  342. And it's not just that they slowly, gradually go away.

  343. No, it stops.

  344. The Bible says there was a great storm

  345. and after Jesus says to calm down,

  346. there is a great calm, a dead calm, a mega calm.

  347. It's not just that the rain sort of stops.

  348. But the rain stops, the wave stops,

  349. the sea is as clear as glass.

  350. You can look down and see your reflection perfectly

  351. over the edge of the boat.

  352. And then he turns around to the disciples.

  353. He says, why are you afraid?

  354. Have you still no faith?

  355. Now put yourself in the disciples' shoes for a second.

  356. They were just in a mega storm.

  357. They were confident that they were going to die.

  358. Fear is the logical response in that situation.

  359. When you see waves bigger than your boat

  360. crashing down on top of you,

  361. fear is the natural response.

  362. And yet the first thing Jesus says to his disciples

  363. after they wake him up is,

  364. why are you afraid?

  365. I think underneath this is a bigger statement.

  366. He's telling them, if you knew,

  367. if you only knew that I was good,

  368. and if you only knew that I cared for you,

  369. then your response would not have been fear.

  370. Your response would have been faith.

  371. Rather than scrambling,

  372. rather than trying and trying and trying desperately

  373. and failing again and again and again

  374. to save this boat,

  375. you would have come to me

  376. and I would have rescued you.

  377. If you knew that I was good,

  378. you would have turned to me

  379. rather than turning to fear and anxiety.

  380. You still haven't learned that.

  381. Disciples,

  382. when are you going to learn that I care desperately for you,

  383. that I'm with you,

  384. and I'm for you?

  385. And I know this story happened 2,000 years ago

  386. on a sea in a land that's thousands of miles away.

  387. And that we here today could sit and listen to this story

  388. and think, eh, what does that have to do with my life?

  389. But the truth is that this story

  390. has a deep continuing significance for our lives

  391. because this story on a miniature level

  392. is a picture of what Christ came to earth

  393. to do.

  394. Like I said,

  395. the question the disciples asked

  396. is one that basically all of us ask

  397. at some point in our lives

  398. in some way.

  399. God,

  400. do you actually care?

  401. You care about me.

  402. You care about the people I care about.

  403. You care about the situations happening to us in life.

  404. And maybe we don't ask the question in those words.

  405. Maybe we don't actually ask or think the question out loud at all.

  406. But we have actions

  407. that reveal the fact

  408. that we don't believe that God cares.

  409. And so we do things like we calculate out

  410. how much money do I need

  411. to be financially secure for the rest of my life.

  412. And then we add $2 million to that U.S.

  413. and stick it in a bank account

  414. just to be safe in case.

  415. And we think,

  416. okay,

  417. now I'm safe

  418. just in case.

  419. When they announced that layoffs are coming up in our office,

  420. in the weeks leading up to the layoff announcements,

  421. we lose sleep

  422. wondering what's going to happen

  423. if my name is on the list

  424. and I no longer have a job.

  425. We lose sleep

  426. because we don't believe

  427. that God cares for us.

  428. We don't believe

  429. that he's good

  430. and he's for us.

  431. And what's true

  432. of the disciples

  433. and of Jesus on the boat

  434. is true of us

  435. in our world today as well.

  436. Confident

  437. trust

  438. in God's goodness

  439. and care for us

  440. leads

  441. to rest.

  442. Confident

  443. trust

  444. in God's

  445. goodness

  446. and care for us

  447. leads

  448. to rest.

  449. And failure

  450. to trust

  451. in God's

  452. goodness

  453. leads

  454. to fear.

  455. If you want

  456. to know today

  457. how you're doing

  458. at learning to trust in God

  459. or failing at that,

  460. a simple question

  461. you can ask yourself.

  462. Is my life marked

  463. more by fear

  464. or by rest?

  465. If you're a guy

  466. and you don't like to admit

  467. that you're ever afraid

  468. of anything,

  469. then you can substitute

  470. out the word fear

  471. for stress

  472. and anxiety

  473. and concern.

  474. Is my life marked

  475. more by stress,

  476. anxiety,

  477. and concern

  478. or by rest?

  479. Because stress,

  480. anxiety,

  481. fear,

  482. concern

  483. are all symptoms

  484. of the fact

  485. that we have hearts

  486. that are failing

  487. to trust

  488. in God.

  489. But there's a deeper

  490. question here too.

  491. And that question is,

  492. can we know

  493. that God cares for us?

  494. Because it's useless

  495. to know how to respond

  496. when God cares for us

  497. if we can't know

  498. whether he cares for us.

  499. And the thing

  500. we need to remember

  501. in response

  502. to that question

  503. is that what was true

  504. of Jesus

  505. and the disciples

  506. on the boat

  507. is also true

  508. of us today.

  509. That just as Jesus

  510. was with the disciples

  511. on the boat

  512. and therefore

  513. had to care about

  514. what happened to them

  515. because he was with them.

  516. That Jesus

  517. is with us

  518. today.

  519. Matthew chapter 1

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  520. in talking about

  521. the Christmas story

  522. says that his name

  523. will be called

  524. Emmanuel,

  525. which means

  526. God with us.

  527. In John chapter 1

    John 1 chapter mention

  528. it talks about

  529. the word

  530. and it says

  531. the word was God,

  532. the word was with God,

  533. the word was in the beginning

  534. with God,

  535. the word made everything

  536. and then it says

  537. the word became flesh

  538. and dwelt among us

  539. and we have beheld

  540. his glory,

  541. glory as of the only begotten

  542. of the Father,

  543. full of grace and truth.

  544. The word,

  545. Jesus Christ,

  546. came and took on flesh

  547. as a human being,

  548. as one of us

  549. and he lived among us

  550. as one of us.

  551. On the boat

  552. he had to care about

  553. what happened to the disciples

  554. because he was with them,

  555. because he had linked

  556. his fate to theirs

  557. so whatever happened

  558. to them

  559. was going to happen

  560. to him too.

  561. And in the Bible

  562. it tells us

  563. that we as humanity

  564. were created

  565. by God

  566. for a relationship

  567. with him

  568. and that each

  569. and every one of us

  570. rebelled against God

  571. and said,

  572. I want no part in this.

  573. But each and every one of us

  574. said,

  575. God,

  576. I'm wiser than you,

  577. I'm smarter than you,

  578. I know more than you,

  579. I've got this,

  580. leave me alone.

  581. And that each and every one

  582. of us

  583. deserved

  584. a punishment.

  585. We deserved

  586. a great storm

  587. of God's wrath

  588. against us

  589. for our rebellion.

  590. And in coming to earth,

  591. Jesus

  592. perfectly followed

  593. and obeyed God.

  594. As one of us,

  595. he came

  596. and the Bible

  597. tells us

  598. that on the cross

  599. he bore

  600. the great storm

  601. of God's wrath

  602. for us.

  603. The greatest storm

  604. that any of us

  605. could ever have to face.

  606. And it wasn't just

  607. whatever happens

  608. to you

  609. happens to me also,

  610. like on the boat.

  611. But it was one step

  612. further than that.

  613. It was,

  614. I am going

  615. to bear this

  616. so that

  617. you don't have to.

  618. His response

  619. to us

  620. when we ask

  621. do you care

  622. is even greater

  623. than his response

  624. to the disciples

  625. on the boat.

  626. How

  627. could I not

  628. care?

  629. I'm with you.

  630. I'm one of you.

  631. I faced

  632. the greatest

  633. storm

  634. for

  635. you.

  636. Because I love you.

  637. Because

  638. I care.

  639. because I want you

  640. to know

  641. my great love

  642. for you.

  643. So what does this

  644. look like

  645. in our lives

  646. on a practical level?

  647. For one thing,

  648. we're going to face

  649. storms.

  650. If you look

  651. at this story,

  652. Jesus actually

  653. tells the disciples

  654. to go out

  655. onto the water.

  656. He says,

  657. let's get in the boat,

  658. let's go.

  659. He knew

  660. there would be

  661. a storm

  662. that night.

  663. I don't think

  664. they did.

  665. And yet

  666. he leads them

  667. into the storm.

  668. Not because

  669. he's evil,

  670. not because

  671. he's apathetic

  672. about what

  673. happens to them,

  674. but because

  675. there's some part

  676. of his character

  677. that he wants

  678. them to see

  679. that they will

  680. never see

  681. unless they go

  682. through the storm

  683. with him.

  684. And so even

  685. if we're

  686. with Jesus

  687. and even though

  688. he cares for us,

  689. we'll still

  690. face storms,

  691. but as we

  692. face storms

  693. in life,

  694. he's with us

  695. and he cares.

  696. And so we can

  697. have confident

  698. rest through

  699. the storms

  700. knowing

  701. that the greatest

  702. storm of all

  703. has been faced

  704. by Jesus

  705. for us.

  706. And that in

  707. these other

  708. storms,

  709. that he's with us.

  710. That he's protecting

  711. us.

  712. that we can

  713. turn to him

  714. rather than

  715. desperately trying

  716. to fix it

  717. all on our

  718. own.

  719. So we can

  720. have rest.

  721. It's interesting

  722. in this story

  723. that the ability

  724. to rest,

  725. like Tobin

  726. said,

  727. we always assume

  728. that it's based

  729. on our circumstances.

  730. But you notice

  731. Jesus and the

  732. disciples were in

  733. the exact same

  734. circumstances.

  735. Both of them

  736. were on the

  737. same boat.

  738. Both of them

  739. were being tossed

  740. by the same

  741. storm.

  742. And yet Jesus

  743. had rest

  744. and the

  745. disciples didn't.

  746. Because Jesus

  747. knew that God

  748. was with him.

  749. And the

  750. disciples forgot.

  751. And if you

  752. had asked any

  753. of the disciples

  754. at that moment,

  755. why are you

  756. so afraid?

  757. They would have

  758. said,

  759. duh,

  760. look around you.

  761. How could you

  762. not be afraid?

  763. We're afraid

  764. because of this

  765. storm.

  766. But that was

  767. a lie.

  768. How do you

  769. know that?

  770. Look at the

  771. last verse

  772. of this passage.

  773. It says,

  774. after Jesus

  775. has calmed

  776. the storm,

  777. and they

  778. were filled

  779. with great

  780. fear,

  781. and said

  782. to one

  783. another,

  784. who then

  785. is this

  786. that even

  787. the wind

  788. and the sea

  789. obey him?

  790. When the

  791. storm hits,

  792. they're sure

  793. that they are

  794. going to die

  795. and they are

  796. scared.

  797. When the

  798. storm stops,

  799. they know

  800. that they are

  801. safe and

  802. they are

  803. more scared

  804. than they

  805. were during

  806. the storm.

  807. The storm

  808. was not

  809. what caused

  810. their fear.

  811. If the storm

  812. caused their

  813. fear,

  814. then number

  815. one,

  816. Jesus would

  817. have been

  818. afraid with

  819. them,

  820. and number

  821. two,

  822. their fear

  823. would have

  824. stopped as

  825. soon as

  826. the storm

  827. stopped.

  828. But there

  829. was something

  830. deeper going

  831. on in

  832. their hearts.

  833. There was a

  834. fundamental

  835. lack of

  836. faith in

  837. Jesus'

  838. care for

  839. them,

  840. an ability

  841. to provide

  842. for them,

  843. and that

  844. led to

  845. fear.

  846. great

  847. fear,

  848. even after

  849. the storm

  850. was gone.

  851. And so

  852. our ability

  853. to face

  854. the storms

  855. in life

  856. isn't based

  857. on our

  858. circumstances,

  859. but rather

  860. on whether

  861. we know

  862. that Jesus

  863. is in

  864. the boat

  865. with us

  866. through

  867. every storm.

  868. And I

  869. know that

  870. that's a

  871. really abstract

  872. concept,

  873. so I want

  874. to give a

  875. couple more

  876. concrete pictures

  877. as we close

  878. up,

  879. of what

  880. this could

  881. look like

  882. functionally

  883. in our

  884. lives on

  885. a day-to-day

  886. basis in

  887. Hong Kong.

  888. And the

  889. first thing,

  890. sleep.

  891. I know it

  892. sounds simple,

  893. but I read

  894. an article this

  895. week published

  896. in 2011.

  897. They did a

  898. scholarly study

  899. of sleep

  900. habits in

  901. Hong Kong

  902. and discovered

  903. that almost

  904. 40% of

  905. people in

  906. Hong Kong

  907. suffer from

  908. insomnia.

  909. insomnia.

  910. That's 2.2

  911. million people

  912. in the city.

  913. And they

  914. found that

  915. the leading

  916. cause of

  917. insomnia

  918. among the

  919. people surveyed

  920. was perceived

  921. stress in

  922. their lives.

  923. And a

  924. really sad

  925. stat about

  926. this study is

  927. they checked

  928. some people's

  929. religious beliefs

  930. to see whether

  931. being part of

  932. a religion

  933. increased or

  934. decreased your

  935. chances of

  936. having insomnia.

  937. And out of

  938. the Christians

  939. surveyed,

  940. the people

  941. surveyed who

  942. identified

  943. themselves as

  944. Christians,

  945. they were

  946. actually more

  947. likely than

  948. the average

  949. person in

  950. Hong Kong

  951. to suffer

  952. from

  953. insomnia.

  954. Exactly.

  955. Now those

  956. stats would say

  957. that in a

  958. room this

  959. size,

  960. maybe about

  961. 80 people

  962. suffer from

  963. insomnia.

  964. Most of

  965. them because

  966. of perceived

  967. stress in

  968. their lives.

  969. things.

  970. And I know

  971. there are some

  972. people who

  973. have trouble

  974. sleeping because

  975. of physical

  976. stuff.

  977. Like I woke

  978. up this

  979. morning with

  980. my nose all

  981. congested and

  982. my throat dry

  983. and it was

  984. before my

  985. alarm went

  986. off and it

  987. was a pain.

  988. I'm not

  989. talking about

  990. that.

  991. But after I

  992. woke up an

  993. hour before my

  994. alarm went

  995. off and I

  996. blew my nose

  997. and I drank

  998. some water,

  999. I climbed back

  1000. in bed and I

  1001. lied down to

  1002. try and go back

  1003. to sleep for

  1004. that last hour.

  1005. And all of a

  1006. sudden, stuff for

  1007. the sermon today

  1008. started running

  1009. through my head.

  1010. and it took

  1011. me a while to

  1012. fall back asleep.

  1013. That's what I'm

  1014. talking about.

  1015. How many of

  1016. us lie in

  1017. bed at night

  1018. unable to

  1019. sleep because

  1020. we feel like

  1021. we have to

  1022. have control

  1023. of the world

  1024. in our

  1025. hands?

  1026. Because we

  1027. don't trust

  1028. that God is

  1029. good and that

  1030. God cares for

  1031. us.

  1032. In the middle

  1033. of the great

  1034. storm, Jesus

  1035. slept.

  1036. I think for

  1037. us, one of the

  1038. biggest signs that

  1039. we're starting to

  1040. understand this

  1041. concept of God

  1042. caring for us

  1043. will be sleeping

  1044. soundly through

  1045. the night.

  1046. The second

  1047. thing, rest.

  1048. I know this is

  1049. difficult in Hong

  1050. Kong.

  1051. We live in a

  1052. city where even

  1053. when you have a

  1054. day that you

  1055. don't have to go

  1056. into the office,

  1057. you're expected to

  1058. constantly be

  1059. available for

  1060. emails, to

  1061. constantly be on

  1062. call to come in

  1063. for emergency

  1064. situations.

  1065. situations.

  1066. And even if

  1067. your office

  1068. doesn't necessarily

  1069. say that they

  1070. expect it, a lot

  1071. of us just do

  1072. that anyways for

  1073. various reasons.

  1074. And even if you

  1075. don't do that, how

1076. many of us on our

  1077. day off just have

  1078. our minds full of

  1079. things coming up in

  1080. the office in the

  1081. next week?

  1082. Of how we're going

  1083. to handle the

  1084. different tasks that

  1085. we have coming up?

1086. We can't get it out

  1087. of our minds, our

  1088. work.

  1089. It consumes us.

  1090. We're with our

  1091. kids.

  1092. We're playing at the

  1093. playground, but we

  1094. have one hand pushing

1095. the kid on the swing

  1096. and the other hand

  1097. checking email on the

  1098. phone to make sure

  1099. that we're not missing

  1100. out on anything from

  1101. the office.

  1102. We're with our

  1103. friends at the

  1104. coffee shop, but

  1105. instead of being able

  1106. to hang out, we're

  1107. just studying because

1108. we have the exam coming

1109. up so soon and we

  1110. need to be ready.

  1111. And what Jesus wants

1112. us to learn in this

1113. story is to rest, to

  1114. truly rest, not just

1115. to step away but still

  1116. have our minds consumed

  1117. by everything going

  1118. on, everything stressing

1119. us out in the world, but

1120. to learn to let God

  1121. handle it.

  1122. You notice when the

  1123. disciples come to Jesus

1124. on the boat, they say,

  1125. don't you care, we're

  1126. drowning.

1127. He doesn't look at the

  1128. situation and say, oh,

  1129. good job, guys.

1130. You kept us up for this

  1131. long, but don't worry, I

  1132. got it from here.

  1133. That's not his

  1134. response.

  1135. His response is, guys,

  1136. why?

1137. Why did you try so hard

1138. for so long rather than

1139. coming to me in the

  1140. first place?

1141. Why did you waste so

  1142. much energy on fear

  1143. rather than just come

  1144. to me?

  1145. I've been here the

  1146. entire time.

  1147. I've been waiting.

1148. So I think us learning to

1149. rest is a huge, huge

  1150. indicator that we're

  1151. starting to get this

  1152. concept.

1153. And I know rest looks

  1154. different for different

  1155. people in different

  1156. phases of life.

1157. Maybe if you have kids,

  1158. learning to rest means

  1159. putting away the cell

  1160. phone while you're

  1161. playing with them.

1162. I know some people get

  1163. the shivers just thinking

  1164. about that idea.

1165. But is God in charge?

1166. Maybe for all of us,

  1167. that means putting away

  1168. electronics during our

  1169. time with God,

  1170. reading our Bibles.

  1171. Maybe if you're a student,

  1172. it means learning to

1173. close the textbooks for a

1174. couple hours and go do

  1175. something you enjoy with

  1176. your friends.

  1177. You know, I have a

  1178. friend who's doing a law

  1179. degree for fun.

  1180. And I know what you're

  1181. thinking.

  1182. Who does that?

  1183. That's my question too.

1184. But I was teasing my

  1185. friend about doing this

1186. law degree for fun because,

  1187. again, who does that?

1188. And this friend told me

  1189. that they had actually

  1190. gotten a really,

  1191. really grade, like top

1192. grade in their class on

  1193. one of their entire

  1194. classes.

  1195. And so I thought,

1196. who does a law degree

  1197. for fun?

1198. And out of those people,

  1199. who outperforms their

  1200. entire class of people

1201. who want to be lawyers?

1202. And I was giving my

  1203. friend a hard time,

  1204. understandably, for being

  1205. a bit of a nerd.

1206. And my friend looked at

  1207. me and she said,

  1208. Eric, you don't

  1209. understand.

  1210. Everyone in that class

  1211. has incredible stress

1212. because they want to be

  1213. lawyers and they feel

1214. like the grade they get

1215. in this class is going

  1216. to determine whether or

1217. not they have a job in

  1218. the future.

1219. And so every minute of

1220. studying for them is an

  1221. intense pressure cooker

1222. of trying to make sure

  1223. that they're secure for

  1224. the future.

  1225. They feel like their

  1226. entire future depends on

1227. how they perform in this

  1228. exam.

1229. For me, I'm just doing it

  1230. for fun.

  1231. So I don't care if I get a

  1232. good grade.

1233. As long as I pass,

  1234. that's fine.

1235. Which means that when I

  1236. study, I'm able to

  1237. actually enjoy it.

1238. I'm able to have this

1239. freedom and rest that no

  1240. one else can have.

1241. And so when I take my

  1242. exam, I'm having fun.

  1243. I'm enjoying the material.

1244. And they are so stressed

  1245. that they can't think

  1246. straight.

1247. And so I'm able to get

  1248. better grades than all

  1249. of them.

  1250. And we laugh.

1251. And then, you know what

  1252. we're going to do?

1253. We're going to leave here

1254. today and we're going to

1255. go home and we're going

  1256. to stress about the

  1257. upcoming week.

  1258. But God is saying,

  1259. stop.

  1260. Stop stressing.

  1261. Stop worrying.

1262. Learn to rest because I

1263. care with you and I've

1264. proven it by coming to be

  1265. with you.

1266. That's what the story on

1267. the boat is all about.

1268. That Jesus has to care

  1269. because he's with the

  1270. disciples.

  1271. And that's what Christmas

  1272. is all about.

1273. That God has to care

1274. about us because he came

1275. here to be one of us.

1276. He came here to be with

  1277. us.

1278. And so when we ask God,

  1279. where are you?

1280. He says, I'm right there

  1281. with you.

1282. And when we ask God, do

  1283. you care?

1284. He says, of course I care.

  1285. How can I not?

  1286. I'm one of you.

1287. If you have any doubts,

  1288. look to the manger.

  1289. Look to the cross.

  1290. Stop stressing.

  1291. Stop worrying.

  1292. Stop being afraid.

1293. Learn to come to me.

  1294. Learn to sleep.

  1295. Learn to rest.

  1296. Let's pray.

1297. Father, we thank you for

1298. your great love for us.

1299. We thank you for Jesus and

  1300. for the cross.

1301. We thank you for the boat

  1302. and for the great

  1303. illustration of the fact

1304. that you care for us.

1305. Thank you for your power

  1306. to save.

1307. Thank you for the fact that

1308. you are with us through the

  1309. storms.

1310. Even when we can't see you,

1311. even when it feels like you're

  1312. apathetic, that you care

  1313. because you're with us.

1314. God, I pray that each of us

1315. this week would learn to trust

1316. in your care for us.

1317. that we would learn to see

  1318. that you're good,

1319. that we would learn to sleep,

1320. we would learn to rest,

1321. that we would learn to stop

  1322. stressing, stop being anxious,

  1323. stop being afraid,

1324. stop scrambling to try and

1325. fix everything on our own.

  1326. Instead, learn to see

1327. that you are a good God

1328. and a good Father to us.

  1329. In Jesus' name, amen.

  1330. Amen.

  1331. Amen.
