  1. Father, we confess before you that we like to divide the world up between good people and bad people.

  2. And so we're confused about ourselves and confused about people and confused about your word.

  3. And we confess before you, Father, that some of the things that you want to give us in your word

  4. are things that we have absolutely no interest in.

  5. And so either, Father, we ignore these things or, Father, we just try to make them look like it's things we already want.

  6. Father, we give you thanks and praise that you know how confused we are and still you love us

  7. and still you sent your son Jesus to die upon the cross to redeem us.

  8. We ask, Father, that you would gently but deeply and powerfully pour out your Holy Spirit upon us this morning

  9. as we open your word and think about your word.

  10. We ask, Father, that Jesus would be present amongst us to open our minds to understand the scriptures.

  11. As your Holy Spirit falls upon us, may our hearts burn within us

  12. as your son opens your word to each one of us and to us as a congregation.

  13. And this we ask in the name of Jesus, your son and our savior. Amen.

  14. Please be seated.

  15. Amen.

  16. So I was saying to Daniel before the service that I've had a hard time with this sermon this week.

  17. And part of the reason I've had a hard time with this sermon, apart from the normal reasons I have hard times with sermons,

  18. is that the Bible here, the text that I'm going to preach on today, is something that basically nobody wants.

  19. You know, if you listen to Christian radio, it doesn't matter if you're in Vancouver,

  20. if you're Sirius Radio or different parts of the country, it seems as if the church is addicted to encouragement.

  21. They like to say things in their advertisements of, come to this radio station, it's a family radio station,

  22. it's a place of encouragement, and it's safe.

  23. And you never hear anybody saying, come and listen to this radio station because we're square,

  24. or come listen to this radio station because we'll teach you and help you to fear God.

  25. And in fact, if you just think about it for a second, if we were to advertise with a big sign,

  26. you know, hoping to track people, and the sign said, come to us and we'll help you be square,

  27. that probably wouldn't be, I mean, people might actually come out of curiosity about why you would have such an odd sermon title,

  28. but it's not actually much of a draw today, just as it would not be much of a draw to say,

  29. come here and help to know how to fear the Lord.

  30. And the Bible passage today is going to talk about the virtue of being square.

  31. At the 8 o'clock service this morning, there's just eight of us gathered,

  32. 1662 Book of Common Prayer service, quiet, meditative service, I love doing it.

  33. And by coincidence this week, it was a bit of an older crowd.

  34. I think everybody there was older than me.

  35. And I said to them, you folks, some of you folks are old enough to remember when to say something was square was a compliment.

  36. But one of the things I could suggest is that some of you folks who are younger might ask some of us who are a bit older,

  37. older than me, by the way,

  38. were you square when you were young?

  39. Or do you remember when actually to say that something was square was a good thing?

  40. But it's hard to believe now.

  41. Our culture's changed so much that that would hardly ever be a compliment to say that somebody's a real square.

  42. They're a square person.

  43. And that's what the Bible's going to talk about.

  44. It's going to encourage us about being square.

  45. It's going to talk about the fear of the Lord.

  46. And so I've been having a hard time thinking how I could get us to even want to be interested in a text like this.

  47. That's maybe why I prayed so hard that the Father would pour out his Holy Spirit upon us.

  48. But let's look at the Bible and see how it is that it encourages us to be square.

  49. So if you have your Bibles, Proverbs chapter 1, verse 1 to 7.

    Proverbs 1:1–7

  50. That's what we're looking at today.

  51. We're beginning a series of sermons that will go through to Labor Day inclusive.

  52. Ancient Book of Proverbs, Ancient Wisdom for a Postmodern World.

  53. And so it's my honor to sort of give you the opening to the book, the gateway to the book, the introduction to the book,

  54. so that when you read it, you won't read it with amnesia and hopefully you have some type of skill

  55. in understanding how to read and understand the book of Proverbs.

  56. So Proverbs chapter 1, verse 1.

    Proverbs 1:1

  57. And here's how it goes.

  58. The Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel.

  59. Now, I'm going to do a really geeky thing here.

  60. Proverbs, you know, it's a bit of a grammar moment.

  61. So I know as soon as I said a grammar moment, I've lost 90% of the crowd and 10% of you,

  62. your ears picked up because you thought, wow, I love grammar moments.

  63. And we all know who's who.

  64. So, but there's a grammar moment here.

  65. And the book of Proverbs begins actually in a really geeky, technical, structured way

  66. that's not as obvious in the English.

  67. That verse 1 is a really, it gives you the, it tells you what type of book you're going to read.

  68. It's going to be a book full of Proverbs.

  69. And it tells you, it actually, in a very sly way in the original language, it makes a bit of a pun

  70. because in Hebrew, Proverbs and Solomon sound very, very similar.

  71. And then it just, to give you a bit of a context, it helps you to say, it says, it's going to be a book of Proverbs.

  72. It's put together by Solomon.

  73. And Solomon is the king of Israel and the son of David.

  74. And for a person reading it, they should be thinking, okay, this is going to be then something that implies the covenant

  75. and something that implies the coming of a Messiah someday.

  76. In other words, it implies that the readers are going to have thought of Genesis and Exodus and Leviticus and Numbers

  77. and promises made to David that there would be a great David's greater son will someday come to redeem.

  78. And that's all put together just in a tiny number of words.

  79. And then in the very, very next verse, if we were doing it nowadays, if we had a modern editor,

  80. if it was like being done by a newspaper, there'd be a big word in capital with maybe underlined,

  81. the purpose of this book.

  82. And then the first line of verse two would be what's underneath it.

  83. In the original language, that's what the writer has done.

  84. In these two know wisdom and understanding, in those five words,

  85. is the writer gives the purpose of the entire book.

  86. Anything you read later on, if you want to know why he's writing it,

  87. you just go back to verse 2a and it'll tell you why he wrote the book.

  88. Why did he write the book?

  89. To know wisdom and instruction.

  90. In fact, actually, before we go any further, any further in my reading,

  91. Andrew, could you put up the scripture passages?

  92. The first, verse 2a.

  93. One of the things I'm going to do today is,

  94. I really only have a two-point sermon.

  95. I'm going to have like a variety of things that go up on the screen,

  96. but really, I only have a two-point sermon.

  97. And the first point is verse 2a, and the second point,

  98. which I'll explain later on why it's important, is verse 7.

  99. And so I'm going to have you keep reading them points over and over and over.

  100. And by the end of the service, if nothing else,

  101. you'll have partially memorized the purpose of the book

  102. and sort of the main way to wonder how to read the book.

  103. And so could you just read this with me?

  104. To know wisdom and instruction.

  105. I caught you by surprise.

  106. Could you read it with me again?

  107. To know wisdom and instruction.

  108. And Andrew, could you put up verse 7 and read it,

  109. and we'll all read it together?

  110. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

  111. Fools despise wisdom and instruction.

  112. Andrew, could you put 2a back up again?

  113. Okay.

  114. So here's this odd verse,

  115. to know wisdom and instruction.

  116. And in English, it looks like, well, that's pretty simple.

  117. But the first thing to understand about the word know

  118. is that it doesn't mean something like,

  119. know what LeBron James basketball statistics were this year,

  120. or know how many goals Sidney Crosby scored in his rookie season,

  121. or know the first five people drafted in the NHL draft the other day.

  122. It doesn't mean that type of knowledge.

  123. Although it doesn't deny it,

  124. but it has a far bigger understanding of knowledge.

  125. It's saying, the word to know is to say,

  126. it's talking about experiential knowledge.

  127. And it's talking about relational knowledge.

  128. And it's talking about,

  129. which goes along with experiential and relational,

  130. it's talking about practical knowledge.

  131. So it's not talking about the type of knowledge

  132. that will allow you to win trivial pursuit.

  133. I don't know if people still play that game.

  134. It's not talking about that type of knowledge.

  135. It said, the purpose of the book

  136. is if you read the book of Proverbs,

  137. and you study it and you pray the book,

  138. what I hope you happen,

  139. I've written the entire book,

  140. I've put the whole book together,

  141. with the purpose that you will have

  142. an experiential, relational knowledge

  143. of wisdom and instruction.

  144. That's why I've written the book.

  145. And what does the word wisdom mean?

  146. Well, wisdom translated in English here

  147. is a pretty good word,

  148. and we have a bit of an idea about it.

  149. But it also has some deeper meanings

  150. in what the writer is trying to get at.

  151. It includes skill.

  152. Skill in living a good and moral life

  153. that will end up being fruitful.

  154. That's at the heart of this word wisdom.

  155. So he wants you to know,

  156. have an experiential, relational knowledge,

  157. and he wants you to have,

  158. the author and the editor

  159. and how the book was put together,

  160. he wants you to end up being able,

  161. by reading the Proverbs,

  162. to end up having a life

  163. that's characterized by wisdom,

  164. which is characterized by a skill

  165. in living your life in a good way,

  166. living a good life that's fruitful.

  167. That's what he's trying to get across

  168. with wisdom.

  169. And then the final thing is,

  170. to know wisdom and instruction.

  171. So he's written the book,

  172. so you have an experiential,

  173. relational knowledge

  174. of the skills required

  175. to live a life which is fruitful and good.

  176. And also for this word instruction.

  177. And instruction's a pretty good word.

  178. If you have different translations of the Bible,

  179. it's translated different ways

  180. because it's sort of a very rich word

  181. in the original language.

  182. And sometimes some of your versions

  183. might say discipline.

  184. And that's a little bit about what it is.

  185. What it isn't,

  186. just so you have a relief,

  187. about a year ago,

  188. I think this was the last time

  189. my wife and I bought anything from Ikea.

  190. We were trying to get our house ready

  191. for a sale about a year ago.

  192. And so we tried to buy an Ikea bed,

  193. one of those beds

  194. that have drawers underneath the bed

  195. because we thought it would help

  196. to deal with some organizing issues.

  197. And so we bought this bed from Ikea.

  198. And of course,

  199. Ikea has all these instructions.

  200. And we both labored at this for an hour.

  201. And after an hour,

  202. we completely and utterly gave up.

  203. Either the instructions were wrong

  204. or the pieces were wrong or something,

  205. but it was completely and utterly impossible

  206. to follow the instructions

  207. and put the Ikea bed together.

  208. In fact, we actually weren't able,

  209. we just gave up,

  210. we were going to return it,

  211. but you couldn't even get the stupid pieces

  212. back in the box

  213. the way that it originally come from Ikea.

  214. So it meant that eventually the box

  215. is sort of like this

  216. with lots of tape around it

  217. to try to scrunch everything in

  218. and we returned it to Ikea

  219. and they were very good

  220. and gave us our money back.

  221. But it's not talking about instructions like this.

  222. It's talking about something more.

  223. It's talking about instructions.

  224. It's talking about what we need to know

  225. to have the habits or the discipline

  226. of a skilled and moral life.

  227. And it's also talking about training.

  228. Training.

  229. And let's be honest,

  230. for most of us,

  231. training is what is missing

  232. in the Christian life,

  233. which is one of the reasons

  234. the book of Proverbs is so important.

  235. I'll give you an example

  236. because this is what happens

  237. to us most weeks.

  238. You know, let's say,

  239. we're going to pray more

  240. or something like that

  241. or you're going to love God more.

  242. And I try to do my best

  243. to preach that

  244. and to make it clear

  245. and to exhort you

  246. and try to get you all fired up.

  247. And I'm not very good at it.

  248. One of the wonderful things

  249. about Daniel Gilman

  250. is that he's way better than me

  251. at exhorting people.

  252. Okay, so maybe I would get you all primed

  253. and then Daniel would come up

  254. and he'd top it

  255. and we'd all feel like

  256. we're going to go out there

  257. and love God

  258. and that will maybe,

  259. nothing wrong with Daniel or me,

  260. it would maybe last

  261. half an hour or an hour

  262. and then we're back

  263. to where we were before.

  264. Would be a little bit like

  265. if I said,

  266. we're all going to go out

  267. as soon as the service is over,

  268. we're going to go out,

  269. we're going to run 10 kilometers,

  270. we're all going to do it together,

  271. we're going to do it

  272. in less than 50 minutes.

  273. Are you with me?

  274. Are you with me?

  275. Are you with me?

  276. Because I'm trying to channel

  277. my inner, you know,

  278. exhorter,

  279. my football coach,

  280. soccer coach

  281. and maybe I'm really good at it

  282. and you get all fired up.

  283. Yes, we're going to go out there,

  284. we're going to run 10 kilometers,

  285. we're going to do it

  286. in less than 50 minutes.

  287. And I don't want to insult you

  288. but maybe nobody here

  289. in the room could do it, right?

  290. No matter how much I exhort it.

  291. And in fact,

  292. many of you are so hip,

  293. not square,

  294. that you wouldn't even bother

  295. going out the door

  296. because no amount of exhorting

  297. from the stage

  298. would make you even want to try

  299. to run 10 kilometers today

  300. in under 50 minutes, right?

  301. Just wouldn't happen.

  302. But often with spiritual things,

  303. and this is probably

  304. one of the reasons

  305. why so many people

  306. prefer bars to churches

  307. because they just think,

  308. oh, they're just going to

  309. lay a whole pile of things on me,

  310. I get all fired up,

  311. all excited,

  312. then I go out

  313. and I fall on my face

  314. like this.

  315. But you know,

  316. if I was to say,

  317. you know what,

  318. and maybe my exhorting

  319. would be really good,

  320. I'd say, you know what,

  321. I think it's really possible

  322. that this time next year

  323. on Canada Day,

  324. you know,

  325. I think almost all of us

  326. here in the room

  327. could do 10 kilometers

  328. in 60 minutes.

  329. And we make a commitment

  330. that we're going to

  331. meet together every day,

  332. we're going to,

  333. you know,

  334. and we get the doctor's checkups

  335. and some of us

  336. start walking,

  337. some run,

  338. and we encourage each other

  339. and we train,

  340. we break down

  341. what would be required

  342. so that in a year's time

  343. we could do 10 kilometers

  344. in 60 minutes.

  345. Unless, you know,

  346. it might be very possible

  347. that 95% of the room

  348. could do that.

  349. You see,

  350. the difference is

  351. training.

  352. Training.

  353. And that's,

  354. that's this instruction word here.

  355. That's this instruction word.

  356. That's at the heart of it.

  357. It's connected to it.

  358. You can go on

  359. and read it later on.

  360. There's a wonderful passage

  361. in 1 John chapter 4 verse 10.

    1 John 4:10

  362. 1 John chapter 4 verse 10.

    1 John 4:10

  363. And in it,

  364. John says,

  365. how can you say

  366. that you love God

  367. whom you can't see

  368. but you don't love

  369. your brother or sister

  370. who's beside you

  371. who you can see?

  372. Like,

  373. how is it that you think

  374. you can love,

  375. oh,

  376. I love you God,

  377. I love you God,

  378. I love you God,

  379. and then you go out

  380. the door

  381. and you,

  382. you know,

  383. the person doesn't let you

  384. in in the car

  385. and you yell and swear at them

  386. and then your wife

  387. or your boyfriend

  388. or your best friend

  389. doesn't respect you

  390. and you're filled

  391. with resentment

  392. and here you've gone

  393. from,

  394. oh,

  395. I love you,

  396. I love you,

  397. I love you,

  398. to not,

  399. and that's what 1 John

    1 John 4:10

  400. chapter 4 verse 10 says

  401. and it's very true

  402. psychologically,

  403. isn't it?

  404. It's that,

  405. those of us who go to church

  406. should probably meditate

  407. upon that a lot more

  408. and in a sense then

  409. what the book of Proverbs

  410. is saying

  411. is we're going to help you

  412. with your training

  413. and so what we're going to do,

  414. we're going to have Proverbs

  415. about,

  416. okay,

  417. how does a parent

  418. love the little,

  419. how does a parent

  420. love his kid?

  421. How do a husband

  422. and wife talk

  423. to each other?

  424. How do you relate

  425. with your boss?

  426. How do you,

  427. how do you relate

  428. to the government?

  429. How do you,

  430. how do you speak

  431. the truth

  432. to another person?

  433. Like,

  434. let's give you

  435. little examples,

  436. Proverbs

  437. that can be

  438. thought-provoking

  439. because the book

  440. of Proverbs

  441. isn't about laws

  442. and rules,

  443. it's about

  444. insights

  445. that help us

  446. to train

  447. so that we will

  448. have a skilled

  449. way of living life

  450. that's good

  451. and bears fruit

  452. and that's the

  453. purpose of the book.

  454. Want to say it

  455. with me again?

  456. To know

  457. wisdom

  458. and instruction.

  459. I surprised you,

  460. we'll say it again.

  461. To know

  462. wisdom

  463. and instruction.

  464. Verse 7,

  465. the fear

  466. of the Lord

  467. is the beginning

  468. of knowledge.

  469. Fools despise

  470. wisdom

  471. and instruction.

  472. You go back

  473. and so I put

  474. my first point up,

  475. Andrew,

  476. my first point

  477. and we're gonna,

  478. I'm gonna look through,

  479. I'm gonna explain

  480. something else to you

  481. but just to give you

  482. a bit of a sense.

  483. So remember,

  484. if you get,

  485. you know,

  486. these are long points.

  487. Some of you say,

  488. good grief,

  489. George,

  490. these are really,

  491. really long points.

  492. My point is verse 2

  493. and my point,

  494. 2a and my point

  495. is verse 7.

  496. You memorize those,

  497. those are the points.

  498. These are just ways

  499. that hopefully,

  500. and if later on

  501. they're on the computer,

  502. you can look them up

  503. on our webpage.

  504. Maybe it'll help you

  505. understand a little bit

  506. about what verse 2a

  507. means and this is a way

  508. to help us understand

  509. what verse 2a means,

  510. to sort of bring it

  511. out a bit.

  512. The Lord wants me

  513. to have an experiential,

  514. relational knowledge

  515. of the training,

  516. skills,

  517. and insight needed

  518. to lead a good

  519. and fruitful life

  520. in the world

  521. that the Lord

  522. has made and sustained.

  523. That's,

  524. that's,

  525. God is showing

  526. the desire of his heart

  527. for you and me

  528. in this book.

  529. That's what verse 2a

  530. is trying to communicate.

  531. The Lord wants me

  532. to have an experiential,

  533. relational knowledge

  534. of the training

  535. and skills

  536. and insight needed

  537. to lead a good

  538. and fruitful life

  539. in the world

  540. that the Lord

  541. has made and sustained.

  542. And so the way

  543. the book is,

  544. remember I said

  545. there's a bit of

  546. a geeky moment?

  547. So that verse 1

  548. is the geeky moment,

  549. the title,

  550. and it gives you

  551. a bit of a clue

  552. about how to understand

  553. that we need to understand

  554. the Messiah

  555. and the covenant

  556. and the law.

  557. And verse 2a

  558. is to know wisdom

  559. and instruction.

  560. That's the main purpose.

  561. And then he teases it out

  562. by giving you

  563. a couple of other

  564. purpose statements

  565. to try to unpack

  566. that a little bit

  567. before we get into the book.

  568. So if you have

  569. your Bible still

  570. and so in verse 2b,

  571. so 2a says

  572. to know wisdom

  573. and instruction

  574. and then it says

  575. to understand words

  576. of insight.

  577. In other words,

  578. what we're going to do

  579. is I'm going to write

  580. put together

  581. these are words

  582. of insight.

  583. They help you

  584. to have a bit

  585. of an insight

  586. about what's going on

  587. with life

  588. and about yourself

  589. and how people are like

  590. and that's what's

  591. going to happen

  592. as I try to help you

  593. to know wisdom

  594. and instruction.

  595. And verse 3,

  596. I want to help you

  597. to receive instruction

  598. in wise dealing

  599. in righteousness,

  600. justice,

  601. and being a square,

  602. which is really

  603. what equity means here.

  604. In other words,

  605. part of the other purpose,

  606. okay,

  607. so what does to know wisdom

  608. and instruction mean?

  609. Well,

  610. it's going to also involve

  611. that I'm going to give you

  612. some instruction,

  613. training,

  614. in how to deal wisely

  615. with people.

  616. And what that will mean

  617. is that as you listen

  618. to these Proverbs,

  619. as the Proverbs

  620. get into your mind

  621. and into your heart

  622. and into your will

  623. and they're before your eyes,

  624. what will happen

  625. is that you're going

  626. to have wise,

  627. a skilled way

  628. of living that's good.

  629. And what that means

  630. is that you're going

  631. to live a good life,

  632. a righteous life.

  633. And the word righteous there,

  634. I mean,

  635. they still have it.

  636. I don't know quite how,

  637. I think the NRC

  638. has something like this,

  639. but there's somewhere

  640. in Canada

  641. that has an official kilo

  642. or whatever.

  643. Back in the old days,

  644. there would have been

  645. maybe the king

  646. had the official weights.

  647. And if you came

  648. to a merchant,

  649. in a sense,

  650. the hope would be

  651. that the merchant's weights

  652. would be the same

  653. as the king's weights.

  654. If you put them

  655. on a scale,

  656. they'd be the same.

  657. They'd be righteous.

  658. It matches

  659. with the official standard.

  660. And here the idea

  661. is that there is

  662. a God who's created

  663. and sustained all things

  664. and that there's a way

  665. of living that matches

  666. the standard,

  667. God.

  668. And just means justice,

  669. that what characterizes

  670. our life is that

  671. we are very fair,

  672. that as you read,

  673. as you come to the end

  674. of the book of Proverbs,

  675. you will not grow

  676. in cynicism

  677. and you will not grow

  678. in despair,

  679. but you will grow

  680. in a sense of how

  681. to treat people justly.

  682. Justice will matter

  683. to you more

  684. by the end of Proverbs

  685. than it will

  686. when you begin the book.

  687. And then there's

  688. this word square.

  689. You know,

  690. it used to be

  691. that you could say,

  692. what I want

  693. are three square meals

  694. a day.

  695. It might be that

  696. after you've gone

  697. to make a deal

  698. with somebody

  699. and you come back

  700. and you talk to your friend,

  701. your dad,

  702. or your mom,

  703. or your wife,

  704. or your husband about it,

  705. you say,

  706. it's a square deal.

  707. You know,

  708. you go and there's somebody

  709. who's going to give you

  710. some help

  711. and there was a time

  712. when you would have said,

  713. it's a square guy.

  714. I'm sure we can count on it.

  715. That when you maybe

  716. went away to travel

  717. and you arrived

  718. where you wanted to travel,

  719. what you wanted to do

  720. is you wanted to be

  721. squared away.

  722. They were all compliments.

  723. They were all compliments.

  724. Now we want to be

  725. hip and cool

  726. and not square.

  727. It's a big cultural shift,

  728. actually,

  729. if you think about it,

  730. to lose that word square.

  731. And what it means

  732. is that it's just,

  733. it's fair,

  734. it's dependable,

  735. it's honest,

  736. it's efficient,

  737. it's filling,

  738. it's what I need,

  739. it's,

  740. that's,

  741. that's what the word equity is.

  742. You read the book of Proverbs,

  743. by the time you're finished,

  744. you will be a square.

  745. That'll sell, right?

  746. I should have a Twitter account.

  747. By the time you finish

  748. reading the book of Proverbs,

  749. you will be a square.

  750. And,

  751. and that's what it's trying

  752. to communicate.

  753. And then in verse four,

  754. this is really important,

  755. to give prudence

  756. to the simple knowledge

  757. of discretion

  758. and knowledge

  759. and discretion

  760. to the youth.

  761. Prudence here,

  762. it's a very,

  763. very good word.

  764. But what it means

  765. is that,

  766. what it means

  767. is that you will be,

  768. you'll be crafty.

  769. You will be,

  770. it's the opposite

  771. of gullible.

  772. It's the opposite

  773. of gullible.

  774. That,

  775. but it's,

  776. in other words,

  777. it means that you will be

  778. shrewd about life.

  779. But you will be shrewd

  780. about life

  781. in a way that isn't cynical.

  782. You will be shrewd

  783. about life

  784. that doesn't feed

  785. your despair.

  786. You will be shrewd

  787. about life

  788. in a way

  789. that does not make you

  790. feel superior

  791. to other people.

  792. But if you read

  793. the book of Proverbs,

  794. by the end,

  795. you will be less gullible

  796. than when you began.

  797. You will have a type

  798. of shrewdness

  799. about life

  800. that,

  801. you know what,

  802. if that salesman says,

  803. oh,

  804. I'm losing my shirt

  805. on this deal,

  806. I'm losing everything

  807. on this deal,

  808. if I tell the manager

  809. about this deal,

  810. she's going to stop

  811. the deal,

  812. he's probably lying.

  813. Like,

  814. I mean,

  815. that's how it is really,

  816. right?

  817. And so the end

  818. of this book,

  819. the book will help us

  820. to be shrewd

  821. about life

  822. without being cynical.

  823. And the simple here

  824. in this particular,

  825. in all the way

  826. through the book

  827. of Proverbs,

  828. the word simple

  829. is never a compliment.

  830. It means naive.

  831. It means gullible.

  832. It means easily led

  833. and easily misled

  834. until you become wise.

  835. Verse 5,

  836. let the wise hear

  837. and increase in learning

  838. and the one who understands

  839. obtain guidance

  840. to understand a proverb

  841. and a saying,

  842. the words of the wise

  843. and their riddles.

  844. So,

  845. put up,

  846. Andrew,

  847. could you put up

  848. verse 2a again?

  849. Want to say it with me,

  850. folks?

  851. What's the book all about?

  852. To know wisdom

  853. and instruction.

  854. And we'll get to this

  855. in a moment.

  856. What's the key

  857. to understanding

  858. every proverb?

  859. Verse 7,

  860. the fear of the Lord

  861. is the beginning

  862. of knowledge.

  863. Fools despise

  864. wisdom

  865. and instruction.

  866. For a variety

  867. of reasons,

  868. I was just able

  869. to watch Interstellar

  870. for the first time

  871. last night

  872. and it's a very,

  873. very good movie.

  874. and it would be

  875. a really interesting movie

  876. to have,

  877. you know,

  878. some discussions

  879. around actually.

  880. But one of the things

  881. which was very,

  882. very interesting

  883. about the book

  884. Interstellar

  885. is it talks a lot

  886. about our fear

  887. of death.

  888. It talks a lot

  889. about our fear

  890. of extinction.

  891. It talks a lot

  892. about the fear

  893. of the planet

  894. just going south

  895. in terms of

  896. ecological disasters

  897. that could lead

  898. to the death

  899. of the human race

  900. and hence

  901. the fears

  902. of extinction.

  903. yet at the same

  904. time,

  905. you know,

  906. our fear

  907. of death

  908. and our fear

  909. of extinction

  910. and what it leads

  911. us to do

  912. but at the same

  913. time,

  914. it encourages

  915. lying

  916. and encourages

  917. murder.

  918. I don't think

  919. I've given

  920. any spoiler alerts

  921. for those of you

  922. who haven't seen

  923. the movie

  924. but it's a very,

  925. very,

  926. you know,

  927. it's a very,

  928. very puzzling thing

  929. sort of maybe

  930. reflected upon

  931. in the movie,

  932. maybe unreflected

  933. upon the movie

  934. that,

  935. you know,

  936. our fear of death

  937. and our fear

  938. of extinction

  939. and what it will

  940. lead us to try

  941. to do

  942. and what it leads

  943. us to try

  944. to accomplish

  945. it,

  946. it seems almost

  947. in the book,

  948. the movie,

  949. sort of the movie

  950. is a bit ambiguous

  951. about it

  952. but it leads

  953. to murder

  954. or attempted murder

  955. and lying

  956. and lying

  957. appearing to be

  958. a wise type

  959. of thing

  960. and it's a

  961. very,

  962. very curious

  963. thing

  964. about how

  965. these very

  966. powerful fears

  967. that human

  968. beings have

  969. and we might

  970. not think

  971. we have a fear

  972. of death

  973. and what we

  974. would do

  975. to stay

  976. alive

  977. but the movie

  978. tries to

  979. communicate

  980. what would

  981. happen to

  982. many of us

  983. if that actually

  984. became not

  985. an abstract

  986. thing but a

  987. real thing

  988. and an imminent

  989. thing

  990. and what we

  991. might try to do

  992. to survive

  993. and

  994. so in light

  995. of that

  996. can you put

  997. up 2A again

  998. Andrew

  999. want to say

  1000. that with me

  1001. to know wisdom

  1002. and instruction

  1003. that's the purpose

  1004. of the book

  1005. and what's going

  1006. to be the key

  1007. in terms of

  1008. understanding the book

  1009. let's say it

  1010. the fear of the

  1011. Lord is the

  1012. beginning of

  1013. knowledge

  1014. fools despise

  1015. wisdom

  1016. and instruction

  1017. and what we

  1018. see is that

  1019. in our

  1020. church culture

  1021. we have

  1022. a terrible

  1023. fear

  1024. of talking

  1025. about the

  1026. fear of the

  1027. Lord

  1028. it's a

  1029. profoundly

  1030. unpopular

  1031. topic in our

  1032. culture

  1033. in fact

  1034. for many

  1035. people

  1036. it would be

  1037. even to be

  1038. brought up

  1039. it would be

  1040. a sign

  1041. of one

  1042. of the

  1043. things

  1044. which is

  1045. fundamentally

  1046. wrong

  1047. about the

  1048. Christian

  1049. faith

  1050. but one

  1051. of the

  1052. things

  1053. is if you

  1054. actually

  1055. read the

  1056. Old Testament

  1057. you see

  1058. that you

  1059. can't read

  1060. very far

  1061. in the

  1062. Old Testament

  1063. where the

  1064. fear of the

  1065. Lord

  1066. isn't actually

  1067. presented as a

  1068. positive thing

  1069. that we should

  1070. pray for

  1071. that we should

  1072. desire

  1073. and many

  1074. Christians

  1075. will just

  1076. quote 1 John

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  1077. chapter 4

  1078. a perfect

  1079. love

  1080. casts out

  1081. fear

  1082. and therefore

  1083. that Christians

  1084. shouldn't be

  1085. characterized by

  1086. the fear

  1087. of the

  1088. Lord

  1089. but they

  1090. should be

  1091. characterized

  1092. by perfect

  1093. love

  1094. but apart

  1095. from whatever

  1096. that verse

  1097. means

  1098. C.S. Lewis

  1099. says all

  1100. sorts of

  1101. things cast

  1102. out the

  1103. fear of

  1104. the Lord

  1105. alcohol

  1106. sex

  1107. gambling

  1108. money

  1109. but you

  1110. can't read

  1111. the New

  1112. Testament

  1113. do a word

  1114. search and

  1115. you'll see

  1116. that in the

  1117. New Testament

  1118. as well

  1119. the fear

  1120. of the

  1121. Lord

  1122. is considered

  1123. a positive

  1124. thing

  1125. in the

  1126. book of

  1127. Acts

  1128. one of the

  1129. things that

  1130. characterizes

  1131. the growth

  1132. of the

  1133. church

  1134. is at the

  1135. same time

  1136. as the

  1137. church is

  1138. growing by

  1139. leaps and

  1140. bounds

  1141. it's also

  1142. growing in

  1143. the fear

  1144. of the

  1145. Lord

  1146. that the

  1147. New Testament

  1148. has this

  1149. idea here

  1150. as a positive

  1151. thing

  1152. yet as I

  1153. said earlier

  1154. so called

  1155. you know

  1156. sorry I

  1157. shouldn't have

  1158. said that

  1159. Christian radio

  1160. would never

  1161. advertise this

  1162. as a selling

  1163. point

  1164. it would

  1165. never

  1166. maybe I'm

  1167. wrong

  1168. maybe there's

  1169. some places

  1170. in Mississippi

  1171. or Arkansas

  1172. or something

  1173. like that

  1174. that advertise

  1175. we're not

  1176. like those

  1177. other Christian

  1178. radio stations

  1179. come here to

  1180. listen to the

  1181. fear of the

  1182. Lord

  1183. maybe that

  1184. happens there

  1185. I just

  1186. haven't been

  1187. in Mississippi

  1188. or Arkansas

  1189. or someplace

  1190. like that

  1191. or North

  1192. Dakota

  1193. or something

  1194. and maybe

  1195. there's some

  1196. places on

  1197. the prairies

  1198. or some

  1199. place that

  1200. us sophisticated

  1201. people in

  1202. Ottawa would

  1203. think is the

  1204. backwoods

  1205. fly over

  1206. country

  1207. but you

  1208. know

  1209. there's a

  1210. real culture

  1211. gap

  1212. between passages

  1213. like this

  1214. and the

  1215. way the

  1216. book of

  1217. Proverbs is

  1218. structured

  1219. is verse

  1220. 1 gives

  1221. you the

  1222. title

  1223. verse 2

  1224. gives you

  1225. the purpose

  1226. and verse

  1227. 7 here

  1228. is the

  1229. key to

  1230. understanding

  1231. every proverb

  1232. that's how

  1233. it's set up

  1234. at a literary

  1235. structure

  1236. Andrew could

  1237. you put up

  1238. my second

  1239. point

  1240. the second

  1241. point is

  1242. that the

  1243. fear of

  1244. the Lord

  1245. is the

  1246. first steps

  1247. the foundation

  1248. the north

  1249. star or

  1250. true north

  1251. and the

  1252. ever present

  1253. factor in

  1254. living a good

  1255. and fruitful

  1256. life in the

  1257. world that the

  1258. Lord has made

  1259. and sustains

  1260. that's the

  1261. claim of the

  1262. book of

  1263. Proverbs

  1264. that's the

  1265. claim of the

  1266. book of

  1267. Proverbs

  1268. that whether

  1269. we're going

  1270. to be reading

  1271. later on

  1272. if you're

  1273. going to be

  1274. reading a

  1275. proverb about

  1276. you know

  1277. husbands and

  1278. wives or

  1279. but you

  1280. know moms

  1281. and dads

  1282. and their

  1283. children or

  1284. how to deal

  1285. with a

  1286. boss or

  1287. how to deal

  1288. with how

  1289. to be a

  1290. witness or

  1291. how to deal

  1292. with messengers

  1293. or how to be

  1294. prudent or how

  1295. to help the

  1296. poor or any

  1297. of the different

  1298. Proverbs at a

  1299. literary level

  1300. it's assuming

  1301. that the fear

  1302. of the Lord

  1303. is the beginning

  1304. of knowledge

  1305. fools despise

  1306. wisdom and

  1307. instruction

  1308. that that's to

  1309. be that is

  1310. if we

  1311. understand this

  1312. then this is

  1313. like the

  1314. very first

  1315. step of

  1316. entering into

  1317. an experiential

  1318. relational

  1319. knowledge that

  1320. involves skills

  1321. that this is

  1322. not only a

  1323. first step but

  1324. it's the

  1325. foundation for

  1326. everything else

  1327. that we do

  1328. it's not only

  1329. that but you

  1330. know maybe some

  1331. of you have

  1332. heard that one

  1333. of the things

  1334. that like having

  1335. virtue or values

  1336. is it helps you

  1337. understand where

  1338. true north is

  1339. so that you can

  1340. navigate the

  1341. complexity of life

  1342. and the book

  1343. of Proverbs is

  1344. saying that the

  1345. fear of the

  1346. Lord is the

  1347. beginning of

  1348. knowledge fools

  1349. despise wisdom

  1350. and instruction

  1351. that that's that

  1352. type of true

  1353. north principle

  1354. that helps us

  1355. to understand how

  1356. to read the

  1357. different Proverbs

  1358. and that as

  1359. well as that

  1360. that verse 7

  1361. is it is a

  1362. ever present

  1363. factor in every

  1364. one of the

  1365. Proverbs so

  1366. that we can

  1367. live a good

  1368. and fruitful

  1369. life in the

  1370. world that the

  1371. Lord has

  1372. made so

  1373. what does it

  1374. mean?

  1375. Well first of

  1376. all some of

  1377. your translations

  1378. have probably

  1379. translated fearing

  1380. the Lord but

  1381. in the original

  1382. language it's two

  1383. nouns the fear

  1384. of the Lord it's

  1385. two nouns put

  1386. together in the

  1387. verb in the

  1388. sentence is that

  1389. is is sorry

  1390. another grammar

  1391. moment but that

  1392. the verb is the

  1393. is not the

  1394. not that it's not

  1395. fearing and the

  1396. word the fear of

  1397. the Lord first of

  1398. all the word Lord

  1399. is very significant

  1400. and you'll notice

  1401. in my points that

1402. I put them all in

  1403. caps and I did

  1404. that in purpose I

  1405. know it's shouting

  1406. nowadays but it's

  1407. it's the in the

  1408. original language it's

1409. the great I am it

  1410. is from Exodus 3

  1411. the God of the

  1412. covenant I am that I

  1413. am has sent you

  1414. perfect being it is

  1415. the God of the

  1416. covenant it is the

  1417. God who desires to

  1418. call to himself a

  1419. people to be in

  1420. relationship with it's

  1421. not the other words

  1422. for God that the

  1423. Old Testament has

  1424. English really only

  1425. has one word for

  1426. God but Hebrew had

  1427. several words for

  1428. God it's not the

  1429. abstract word for

  1430. God it's not a

  1431. deist word for God

1432. of a God who is

  1433. absent and distant

  1434. and far off it's

  1435. not the word for

  1436. God that that

  1437. emphasizes just his

  1438. power or his

  1439. standing in judgment

  1440. or sovereign over

  1441. us it is the

  1442. intimate it's both

  1443. an exalted

  1444. mysterious description

  1445. of God but it's

  1446. an intimate the

  1447. intimate covenant

1448. name for God in the

  1449. Old Testament and

  1450. and the word fear

  1451. has a range of

  1452. meaning and and it

  1453. captures a little bit

  1454. about what's going

1455. on here in this this

1456. word the fear of the

  1457. Lord as a virtue as a

  1458. positive thing is

  1459. something that people

1460. if they were wise will

1461. want to enter into and

  1462. and the range of

1463. meaning is on one hand

  1464. it does mean abstract

  1465. abject terror that's

1466. one end of the range

1467. of meanings but it it

  1468. also means respect and

  1469. it means reverence and

  1470. it means a willingness

  1471. to listen and to

  1472. submit and it means

  1473. gobsmacked jaw

  1474. dropping close intimate

  1475. adoration and that

  1476. includes that whole range

1477. of meaning the type of

1478. being in the presence of

1479. the good the true and the

  1480. beautiful that just

1481. cause your jaw to hit

  1482. the ground either your

1483. hands to go to your

1484. side or your hands to

1485. go like this and to be

1486. caught up in complete and

  1487. utter loving adoration and

1488. the Hebrew word for fear

  1489. captures that whole range

1490. and at the very very heart

1491. of this idea is that at

1492. the heart of the fear of

1493. the Lord is a profound

  1494. experiential relational

  1495. knowledge of the difference

  1496. between you and God

  1497. which we're always

  1498. confusing like we we

1499. might not think about it

1500. much but we one one hand

1501. we see it all the time we

  1502. we see a boss and we're

  1503. worried about our boss

  1504. because she thinks like

1505. she acts like she's God

1506. right we have a kid in our

  1507. family or a husband or a

1508. wife and they act like

1509. they're God we we have it

1510. you know it might be that

  1511. there's a you know a a a a

1512. dad who I just finished

  1513. reading a John Grisham

  1514. novel Grey Mountain and

1515. the the heroine of the

1516. novel one of the things

  1517. which she wrestles with

  1518. apart from wrestling with

1519. the the drama of the

1520. story is that her dad was

  1521. so completely and utterly

  1522. consumed with himself and

1523. with his career he was so

1524. consumed with that that it

1525. was as if he ignored his

1526. wife and family his wife and

1527. daughter and that they were

1528. just in a sense sucked up in

  1529. his all-consuming concern with

1530. money and his own career in

  1531. other words he'd lost a

  1532. clear sense of the

  1533. distinction between him and

  1534. his wife and the

  1535. distinction between him and

1536. his daughter and and the

1537. need to to relate to them

1538. not as just some little part

1539. of himself which is all part

1540. of his huge process to

1541. become rich and and to

  1542. become powerful but that

1543. there there is a place where

1544. he begins and ends and the

1545. other person is a real

1546. person who has a beginning

1547. and end and real boundaries

1548. and and the daughter has

1549. real boundaries and and and

1550. we know that in families and

1551. in marriages and in schools

1552. and in workplaces and in

1553. governments when you have a

1554. person who starts to treat

1555. other people as if they

  1556. almost don't exist they're

  1557. just an epiphanomenon just

  1558. they're just something that

1559. can get sucked up in their own

  1560. project that those are

  1561. completely and utterly

  1562. destructive and the Bible

1563. says that that's the common

  1564. human problem with every

1565. single human being in the

1566. relationship with God that we

  1567. are always blurring the

  1568. distinctions between

1569. ourselves and God that we

1570. lose sight of where we

1571. begin and end and hence we

  1572. don't even really know

1573. ourselves and we lose sight

1574. of where God begins and

1575. ends and we lose sight of

  1576. the differences between the

1577. two of the things it's one

1578. of the reasons why one of

1579. the great insights of the

1580. Bible is that the more we

1581. know God the more we know

  1582. ourselves because the more

1583. we know how we are different

1584. from God and where we in

1585. fact begin and end and the

1586. fear of the Lord is all about

  1587. coming into a relational

  1588. experiential novel not

1589. knowledge of the living God

1590. who desires to be in a

  1591. covenant relationship with us

1592. to be our sovereign in our

1593. king our great deliverer our

  1594. great delight our great

  1595. protector and it's called

  1596. it's been entering into a

1597. relationship with him where as

1598. we deepen in this relationship

1599. of the fear of the Lord we

1600. will come to an ever greater

1601. knowledge of who we are who I

1602. am and where I begin and end

1603. and where God is and how God

  1604. is different and that

1605. difference is good and that

  1606. difference sometimes will make

1607. me want to fall on my face in

1608. repentance for the things that

1609. I have done that are wrong and

1610. sometimes I will want to stand

  1611. with jaw dropping God's God's

1612. smacked awe and wonder at the

1613. beauty of God that the cry of our

1614. heart that the end of it the cry

1615. of my heart will be that my soul

1616. desire will be to dwell in the

1617. house of the Lord to behold his

  1618. beauty

1619. it's all encaptured in this phrase

1620. the fear of the Lord

1621. it's all encaptured in this phrase

1622. the fear of the Lord which is why

1623. to know Jesus doesn't mean that

1624. you stop fearing the Lord

1625. could you put it up to a and to

1626. put up to a gain for me Andrew

1627. remember I just really have two

1628. points let's say this together to

1629. know wisdom and instruction that's

1630. what the book of Proverbs is about

1631. say it with me again to know

1632. wisdom and instruction and what's

1633. going to help us understand every

1634. Proverbs verse 7 the fear of the

1635. Lord is the beginning of knowledge

1636. fools despise wisdom and instruction

1637. now some of you might say okay

1638. George are you saying that only

1639. Christians only Christians are going

1640. to live a good life and are going to

1641. be wise and have a skill of living

  1642. oh that's what you're saying you're on

1643. drugs have you seen the lives of lots

1644. of Christians George be honest

1645. aren't there lots of Christians if

1646. you had a choice between having some

  1647. of your non-Christian neighbors or a

1648. Christian as your neighbor you'd pick

1649. the non-Christian be honest George are

1650. you saying that this is what the book

1651. of Proverbs says that only Christians

1652. are wise isn't that what sort of this

1653. text is implying that this whole fear

1654. of the Lord thing that you just talked

1655. about and it's connected to wisdom and

1656. instruction and knowledge are you

1657. saying that George well there are many

1658. Christians who talk and act like that

1659. and what happens is we end up having a

1660. religious or spiritual reading of the

1661. text not a reading of the text that God

1662. intends Andrew could you put up my

1663. third point the Bible teaches that every

1664. human being is divided and at war within

1665. themselves you see a religious or a

1666. spiritual person wants to take a text

1667. like this and divide the world and on

1668. one hand there is a division here this is

1669. one of the many many places in the Bible

1670. that says at the end of the end of the

1671. end we either end up in heaven by grace

1672. or we end up in not heaven by our own

1673. deserving and it's one of many many

1674. texts that say at the end of the day

1675. there's only two paths but if we read

1676. this text to think that it divides

1677. congregations that it divides churches

1678. that it divides us from our neighbors then

1679. we are reading it in a in a way that does

1680. not fear the Lord ironically the line

1681. between the fear of the Lord and fools

1682. does not separate people it separates me

1683. and it separates you it goes right down

1684. the center of who you and I are

1685. every human being is at war and divided

1686. amongst themselves this text is for

1687. self-awareness not to divide nations

1688. and congregations and denominations and

  1689. political parties and individual

1690. people it describes the division and the

1691. battleground of every human being

1692. say 2a again put up Andrew let's say it

1693. to know wisdom and instruction that's the

1694. purpose of the book and and what's going

1695. to help us understand that verse 7 the

1696. fear of the Lord is the beginning of

1697. knowledge fools despise wisdom and

1698. instruction you see the problem you know

1699. here's the thing the very common belief

1700. in our culture is that what we just need

1701. is that we just need to to know what has

1702. to be done and then things will be fine

1703. but the fact is that works for some of

1704. us sometimes a little bit for but for a

1705. lot of us it just doesn't work you know

1706. maybe it works for us all right with money

1707. but it doesn't work with diet or maybe

1708. it works all right with us for relations

1709. but it doesn't work with us for money or

1710. you know a whole range of things and and

1711. one of the things that happens is that you

1712. know many many people is so we continue

1713. though to be almost addicted to this idea

1714. that all we need is more information and

1715. once we have the information we can do the

1716. things that we're supposed to do yet

1717. empirical observation will tell us that

1718. that never happens and that it rarely

1719. happens that it never happens in any one

1720. person all of the time and and then the

1721. the other thing that we start to do in

1722. our culture is that we start to try to we

1723. you know we we don't want to acknowledge

1724. that there's this great division that

1725. goes right down the center of who we are

1726. so we want to say that we're a good

1727. person that we're really a good person

1728. and when we we want to emphasize that

  1729. we're a good person then it's almost as

1730. if some other person does those bad

  1731. things it wasn't me I'm a good person I

1732. wasn't the one who swore at that person

1733. called them names and slandered and

1734. gossiped about them I'm a good person

1735. couldn't really have been me and then

1736. one of the things that that happens in

1737. our relationships is we don't really

1738. have we can't really apologize because

1739. how can a good person apologize for what

1740. they really didn't do which was wrong and

1741. there's a way of explaining all the bad

1742. things we do and that's what goes on in

1743. our culture because there's this inability

1744. to accept that verse 7 describes something

1745. that goes right down the center of us this is a

1746. very very long point and I don't expect

1747. you to write you know what and if you

1748. want to write it down you can you can

1749. look at it you can look at it later but

1750. and remember I'm writing this long

1751. talking thing down because I just want

1752. to get the idea out for you but my two

1753. points this morning are 2a in verse 7

1754. and if you go back and you know those

1755. verses all I'm trying to do here with

1756. this verse 7 is try to help you to

1757. understand what verse 7 is saying to

1758. us Andrew if you could put up my

1759. exceptionally long point for because of

1760. the Lord's common grace every human being

1761. has some knowledge of and desire for the

1762. training skills and insight needed to live

1763. a good and fruitful life in the world that

1764. the Lord has made and sustains because of

1765. common grace because we're made in the

1766. image of God and when we fell and rebelled

1767. against God God did not remove his image

1768. from us it got bent but not removed and

1769. that's why people can be wise about

1770. money and some people who are very far

1771. from God can be very wise about

1772. relationships it's why some people who

1773. are very very far from God they can be

  1774. absolutely spectacularly good neighbors

1775. because it's not the case that we live

1776. our lives in complete and utter defiance

1777. against these things most people there's

1778. some it's part of common grace that

1779. there's some desire for skills and

1780. wisdom and living well and living justly

1781. and being square however it is also

1782. true that by nature our fallen nature

1783. some part of every human being despises

1784. the training skills and insight needed to

1785. live in good and fruitful life in the

1786. world that the Lord has made and sustains

1787. see the richness of the Christian faith

1788. the richness of this proverb and some of

1789. you might be bothered by this word despises

1790. Andrew could you put up verse 7 again

1791. let's read this together the fear of the

1792. Lord is the beginning of knowledge

1793. fools despise wisdom and instruction

1794. you know I sent my sermon notes to

1795. Bishop Charlie and I said one of the

1796. things is about my two sermon points is

1797. that if people don't like them they can

1798. take it up with God and and I had to put

1799. in my explanation this word despise I don't

1800. want to let us off the hook sounds

1801. extreme doesn't it but here's the thing

1802. imagine that I came home and gave my or my

1803. wife gives me a gift and that'd be more

1804. likely because I'm more forgetful and so

1805. my wife gives me a gift and you know it's

1806. a book book that I want and I said well

1807. thank you for the book and then she you

1808. know she leaves and she's doing other

1809. things and then she comes back and over

1810. the next few days or weeks she sees that

1811. the book is just left on the couch well

1812. might bother her a little bit she knows

1813. I'm forgetful might not bother her very

1814. much but now let's say that unbeknownst to

1815. the press it's kept a secret from the

1816. world but Louise discovers that she

1817. actually is the owner of the Mona Mona

1818. Lisa painting and and she decides to

1819. exercise her right of ownership over the

1820. Mona Lisa painting and she has it taken

1821. out of the museum and one day she says

1822. George I haven't wanted to tell you that

1823. this it hasn't been released in the press

1824. but I this is the Mona Lisa I own it and

1825. I'm giving it to you as a gift and I'd say

1826. wow and I put on the couch three weeks

1827. later it's still on the couch the

1828. grandkids have come to visit every time

1829. the grandkids come to visit you know

1830. they're spilling things and spewing

1831. crackers and all that you know just

1832. little kids right they're not being

  1833. mean they're being three-year-olds and

1834. two-year-olds and toddlers and Louise

1835. would say George despises that gift you

1836. see what it is so what if you think

1837. about it for a second if God is actually

1838. if the true and living God is the

1839. creator of all things and sustains all

1840. things if he is actually speaking to us

1841. if he is actually in a sense providing

1842. the power of salvation for all who

1843. believe in the death of his son and we

1844. we just put it on the couch or we turn

1845. our back from it we think that's stupid

1846. or we think that's foolish then we're

1847. despising it it's the context of the

1848. greatness of the gift that reveals

1849. whether we are despising and that's why

1850. this is such a powerful verse to us

1851. so some of you might say okay George

1852. you know you said earlier that left to

1853. your own devices it's very very hard to

1854. follow advice so it's just book of

1855. Proverbs just going to give me a whole

1856. pile of like George is it going to be

1857. like okay George you said that you know

1858. maybe most of us in the congregation if

1859. we waited if we tried really hard for a

1860. whole year at the end of the year we

1861. could do 10k in 60 minutes George there

1862. is no way that I'm ever going to do

  1863. 10k in 60 minutes maybe when I was 20

1864. years younger 30 years younger maybe if

1865. the television and the couch weren't as

1866. popular in my life or whatever it is

1867. or my health problem or my age or

1868. whatever it is never gonna George I'm

1869. just the Proverbs just going to give me

1870. a whole pile of other things that I can

1871. feel guilty about and that I just can't

1872. do and I just can't accomplish like is

1873. that all the book of Proverbs is going

1874. to be it's just you know it might be

1875. wise and it might it might really be

1876. good and I'm going to really try to

1877. read it and I'm going to really try to

1878. memorize it I'm really going to try to

1879. live it but is it just is it just

1880. advice put up put up verse 2 again

1881. let's say together again to know wisdom

1882. and instruction that's my first point

1883. what the book's all about purpose of

1884. the book second thing let's read it

1885. together the fear of the Lord is the

1886. beginning of knowledge fools despise

1887. wisdom and instruction a couple months

1888. ago in my devotions it was as if God

1889. really had a passage from Isaiah jump

1890. out at me if you want to turn to it

1891. those of you have Bibles if you don't

1892. have Bibles you can listen to me while

  1893. I read it it's it's Isaiah chapter 11

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

1894. and in fact actually it's been a part of

1895. my prayer life actually ever since I

1896. sort of stumbled upon it at the beginning

1897. of April and not just stumbled upon it

1898. because I'd read it before but it really

1899. spoke to me in some way and and so it's

1900. part of my every day I actually try to

1901. prayerfully meditate upon part of this

1902. verse because it really struck me and and

  1903. it's it's a passage in Isaiah that talks

1904. about the Messiah who's going to come

1905. this is how it goes there shall come

1906. forth verse 1 there shall come forth a

1907. shoot from the stump of Jesse and a

1908. branch from his roots shall bear fruit and

1909. the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon

1910. him the spirit of wisdom and

1911. understanding the spirit of counsel and

1912. might the spirit of knowledge and the

1913. fear of the Lord and his delight shall be

1914. in the fear of the Lord and that just

1915. jumped out me Jesus's delight was in the

1916. fear of the Lord and his delight could be

1917. in the fear of the Lord my delight could be

1918. in the fear of the Lord and so I have been

1919. praying every day Lord take my heart so my

1920. soul desire is to delight in the fear of

1921. the Lord Lord take my heart so my soul desire is

1922. to delight in the fear of the Lord and if you

1923. could put up the fifth point it is because by

1924. nature I cannot fully know the fear of the

  1925. Lord that I need a Savior I'm divided I'm at

  1926. war within myself I need a Savior I don't

1927. keep instructions very well not well enough it

1928. is because Jesus Christ delighted in the fear

1929. of the Lord that he died for me and by grace he

1930. will walk with me into a skilled trained

1931. insightful fear of the Lord you see it's not

1932. only that Jesus paid the penalty of the fact

1933. that I am divided and that I don't fear the

1934. Lord and that there's many ways that I really

  1935. mess up it's it that it's that's important

1936. deeply deeply important that because of that

1937. Jesus dies on the cross to pay for the price of

1938. my sins the price of my incompleteness but I'm

1939. also clothed with his righteousness in a sense

1940. I am clothed with his perfect delighting in the

1941. fear of the Lord I don't have to accomplish this

1942. completely and utterly by myself to measure up

1943. before he will receive me I am clothed in the

1944. Lord's delighting in the fear of the Lord that's

1945. what clothes me when I come on to a to a faith in

1946. Jesus and it means that I can pour out my heart to

1947. Jesus and say Jesus help me to what you delighted in

1948. the fear of the Lord and and you you died for me and

1949. you love me and you care for me so Jesus please walk

1950. with me help me pour out your Holy Spirit upon me help

1951. me to delight in the fear of the Lord just as you have

1952. delighted in the fear of the Lord that's that's the

1953. promise of the scripture it's a promise of the

1954. scripture it's why the book of Proverbs when we read

1955. it we we don't have to just read it thinking that it's

1956. going to be completely and utterly up to us to accomplish

1957. it but as we read this we can say oh Lord that's not the

1958. way I deal with my kids or Lord that's not the way I deal

1959. with my boss or Lord that's not the way I deal with my

1960. employees or Lord that's not the way I deal with my tongue and

1961. and and on one hand because of the fear of the Lord we can our

1962. conscience can be stricken that we need to repent but at the

1963. same time we can thank Jesus that he's paid for the price of

1964. that we can we can thank him that we're clothed with his

1965. delighting in the fear of the Lord and we can pour out our

1966. heart to Jesus that this proverb would become real in us that

1967. it would be part of our training in the fear of the Lord it's

1968. the promise of the gospel it's the promises we read the book

1969. of Proverbs Andrew could let's put up to verse 2 again we'll

1970. say it one more time 2a first point what's the book all

1971. about friends to know wisdom and instruction and what's going to help

1972. us read every proverb all the way through the fear of the Lord is the

1973. beginning of knowledge fools despise wisdom and instruction just as we're

1974. leaving three things we can pray the first thing is I was really convicted

1975. by this I have to pray Lord help me to know the ways that I am a fool

1976. not be cynical not filled with despair in the comfort of who Jesus is and what

1977. he's done for me I can pray Lord help me to know the ways that I am a fool

1978. and second thing if you could put it up Andrew I can pray this Lord I am divided

1979. and at war within myself please be my Savior and my Lord so that I will be free

1980. and whole in you it's it can be profoundly freeing to not have to put up a front but

1981. we can say to God Lord I am so divided some days I want to be I'm wishing like I'm

1982. imagining that I'm LeBron James and then I'm imagining that I'm like Mother Teresa and

1983. then I'm imagining like I'm Billy Graham and then I'm imagining like I'm John Calvin

1984. and then I'm imagining like Bill Gates and then I'm imagining you know maybe I'm the

1985. only one who goes through completely and utterly unbelievably stupid combinations and

1986. I'm divided within myself and now I've just confessed it before all of you but I suspect

1987. it's a more common more common problem than we all are willing to acknowledge because of

1988. Jesus because of the fear of the Lord because of the book of Proverbs I encourage you to consider

1989. praying a prayer like that's also the prayer that you pray to enter into the Christian faith

1990. and to walk the Christian faith and finally if you could put up the final one I encourage you

1991. to consider praying a prayer like this Lord please fill me with your Holy Spirit and grant me to walk

1992. with Jesus and grow in the fear of the Lord that I'm going to ask you to stand right now and if the Holy

1993. Spirit has convicted you would you join with me in praying that prayer right now let's pray Lord please

1994. fill me with your Holy Spirit and grant me to walk with Jesus and grow in the fear of the Lord

1995. Father pour out your Holy Spirit upon us pour out your Holy Spirit upon us help us to read the book of

1996. Proverbs help us Father to accept that you desire that we will know wisdom and instruction

1997. Father pour out your Holy Spirit upon us we thank you that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of

1998. knowledge and we ask that you grant us a deep fear of the Lord and Father you know how much each one of

1999. us are fools and we despise wisdom and instruction we ask Father that you bring that to us make us aware

2000. of the ways that we are fools that I am a fool and Father as you convict me of my foolishness at the

2001. same time turn my eyes to Jesus who died for me who clothes me with his delight in the fear of the Lord

2002. that I might repent to you and love you and adore you and walk with Jesus all this we ask in the name of

2003. Jesus your Son and our Savior amen
