  1. Good morning, Watermark.

  2. It's great to see you this morning.

  3. Good to be here with you.

  4. If you don't know me, my name is Eric.

  5. I'm one of the guys on staff here at Watermark Church.

  6. It's great to be with you today.

  7. About six years ago, I woke up one morning and I was frustrated.

  8. There was stuff happening at my school that I wasn't really a fan of,

  9. and it left me frustrated.

  10. And as I reflected on the things that were happening,

  11. I decided that the way to fix these frustrations was a change of scenery.

  12. I would get out of Dallas where I was going to school.

  13. Things would be different.

  14. Things would be new.

  15. Things would be better.

  16. At that same time, one of my friends had just come back from an internship

  17. that he had done in Hong Kong.

  18. And he wouldn't stop talking about how amazing of a city Hong Kong is

  19. and how great of a time he had had doing this internship.

  20. And I thought, hey, I want to get out of Dallas.

  21. He says Hong Kong is amazing.

  22. Perfect combo.

  23. I applied for the same internship that he had had, and I got the job.

  24. And a couple months later, I was on the plane heading to Hong Kong.

  25. I landed in the city, and everything was bright and shiny and new and amazing,

  26. and I loved it.

  27. And everything felt better.

  28. All of my problems were gone.

  29. Life was good.

  30. For a couple months.

  31. And then Hong Kong became the old, the normal, the standard, the regular.

  32. And as I got settled in here, I realized that the problems that I was running away from in Dallas

  33. weren't things that were specific to Dallas.

  34. They were things that were specific to me.

  35. And that by changing my scenery, that that wouldn't fix my problems.

  36. There was something bigger and something deeper that needed to change inside me

  37. than just my location for things to change.

  38. And we're just coming out of the Christmas season, or we're still sort of in it,

  39. but we're in that awkward in-between phase.

  40. And I think for a lot of us, we have this type of attitude in this season,

  41. especially for children.

  42. If I just get that one gift, my life will be better.

  43. If I just get the new iPhone, then everything will be fine.

  44. Or if you have kids who are in maybe first or second grade,

  45. if I just get that cool water bottle that sprays the mist out of the top,

  46. then I can be the cool kid in class.

  47. Or maybe if my spouse gets me that new model of the Tesla,

  48. then things will be good.

  49. And we laugh at this because we know none of these things

  50. are really going to change our lives for the better.

  51. We're adults.

  52. We've gotten enough Christmas gifts over the year

  53. that we know you open up the gift, it's really exciting and new,

  54. and by now, two days later, meh, it's just another toy that we have.

  55. It might make life a little more convenient,

  56. but nothing is substantially changed in our lives.

  57. We're adults.

  58. We think bigger things will change our lives.

  59. We think, yeah, the Christmas gift won't make things new,

  60. but my New Year's resolution next week, that's going to change things.

  61. Just wait until you see who I become

  62. when I go to the gym three times a week.

  63. Or we think, maybe if I just had a new job

  64. and I wasn't stuck with this oppressive and terrible boss,

  65. things would be different.

  66. I'd be a new person.

  67. If I had a little bit bigger flat,

  68. I would be so much less stressed and more organized.

  69. Or maybe, like me, you thought,

  70. a change of scenery is what I need.

  71. I just need to get out of this city, go somewhere else,

  72. go somewhere new, and everything will be okay.

  73. But the problem is, none of these things will fix us.

  74. All of these things are changing our circumstances

  75. and changing the things around us,

  76. and the issue with each and every one of us

  77. each and every one of us have issues,

  78. and they're issues that are much deeper than the circumstances around us.

  79. And if we want true, lasting, substantial change in our lives,

  80. we don't need change of circumstances.

  81. we need a change of identity.

  82. And so today, as we head into the new year,

  83. I want to ask you a big question.

  84. Are you new?

  85. Not are your circumstances new, but are you new?

  86. And to help us answer this question, I have three diagnostic questions for us.

  87. Number one, where are you?

  88. Number two, what are you?

  89. And number three, what are you doing?

  90. I know that's cryptic, intentionally.

  91. But follow along, and you'll find out what I'm talking about.

  92. So in 2 Corinthians 5, verse 17,

    2 Corinthians 5:17

  93. it says,

  94. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

  95. And my first question for us is, where are you?

  96. Are you in Christ or not?

  97. And I know this phrase of being in Christ

  98. is not something that we talk about necessarily a whole lot

  99. in the world at large today.

  100. Maybe we reference it in church,

  101. but even then, we'll do it in a way that sort of assumes

  102. that everyone knows what we're talking about

  103. when no one actually does.

  104. And then everyone just nods along politely,

  105. and then we move on to the next thing

  106. because no one wants to ask the question and be that person.

  107. But what does it mean to be in Christ?

  108. I think Jesus gives us a good picture,

  109. a word picture of this,

  110. when he talks in John 15

  111. about being in him like branches are in a vine.

  112. He says, I am like a plant,

  113. and you guys are like branches that grow off of the plant,

  114. like this guy right here.

  115. And he says, you need to be in me.

  116. Now what does it mean for this little leaf right here

  117. to be in this plant?

  118. If I just set it right there.

  119. Are we good?

  120. It's in the plant?

  121. Physically, it's located next to the plant,

  122. inside the plant.

  123. But no, it's not talking about just physically being located there.

  124. It's talking about having a life-giving, vital connection

  125. where the plant is supplying all of the nutrients and needs

  126. that this leaf needs for life.

  127. That this leaf life comes from the plant.

  128. That there is, it's not just proximity.

  129. It's not just, oh, we're touching now.

  130. Tied it on there and it's going to stay.

  131. But it's actually that there is a life-giving connection

  132. where the nutrients for life that this leaf needs

  133. come from the plant.

  134. And when we rip the leaf off from the plant,

  135. like I just did, it's dead.

  136. It still looks alive, but it's dead.

  137. And it's only a matter of time

  138. until the symptoms of death start setting in on the leaf.

  139. And when the Bible talks about us being in Christ,

  140. what it means is that we have a vital,

  141. life-giving connection with Christ

  142. where all of the sources and nutrients of our life,

  143. not physically, but spiritually, come from him.

  144. So does that mean showing up in church?

  145. Is that what it means to be in Christ?

  146. I think using this analogy, showing up in church

  147. is sort of like setting the leaf on top of the plant

  148. and saying, there we go, we're good.

  149. But it's very easy to be in church and not be in Christ.

  150. Does it mean reading our Bibles every day?

  151. Maybe that would be like taking some string

  152. and tying this leaf back on here.

  153. It looks good.

  154. Can't tell from the outside that anything's wrong.

  155. But it's only a matter of days or weeks

  156. before the greenness starts to wear off the leaf

  157. and it turns brown.

  158. And the Bible says that we have a fundamental problem

  159. because each and every one of us

  160. is what the Bible calls a sinner.

  161. It means we've rebelled against God.

  162. We were created to have a perfect relationship with God,

  163. to be connected to him,

  164. to have this relationship with him

  165. be the source of life for us.

  166. And yet each and every one of us looked at God,

  167. looked at his commands and said,

  168. no God, I know better than you how life works.

  169. I have a better understanding

  170. of where I need to get my nutrients from.

  171. I'm going to tear myself off,

  172. separate myself,

  173. and try and provide my own sustenance in life.

  174. I think that my job is going to give me meaning

  175. more than you are.

  176. And so I'm going to do whatever it takes to keep my job,

  177. even if that means cutting corners

  178. and lying on the accounting sheets for my boss,

  179. because I need this job more than I need you.

  180. And we go along throughout life,

  181. and every time we disobey and rebel against God,

  182. we separate ourselves from him a little bit further.

  183. And like this leaf,

  184. when we're cut off from that source,

  185. we're dead,

  186. and it's only a matter of time

  187. until the symptoms start showing up.

  188. And what the Bible says

  189. is that Jesus came to the earth,

  190. that he lived a perfect life

  191. in this perfect connection with God,

  192. and that he died the death that we deserve

  193. so that we can be reconnected to God.

  194. In planting, in agriculture,

  195. there's something called grafting,

  196. where you take something from one plant,

  197. and you cut it a certain way

  198. and bind it to another plant,

  199. and actually they can become one plant again,

  200. even though they've been separated.

  201. And the Bible talks about our connection with Christ

  202. being like being grafted into a plant,

  203. where even though we were separated,

  204. even though we were far off

  205. and weren't connected

  206. and receiving this nutrition for life

  207. that we need from him,

  208. that he came and made a way

  209. for us to be connected to God again.

  210. And I don't know enough about grafting

  211. to save this leaf, so sorry.

  212. But the Bible says that through Christ

  213. and through the work that he has done,

  214. we have an opportunity to be in him,

  215. to be connected to him

  216. in this vital and life-giving way.

  217. And so there are two places today

  218. as we gather here that we can be.

  219. We can be in Christ,

  220. or we can be not in Christ.

  221. And it's very important

  222. that we answer this question.

  223. Where are you?

  224. Are you in Christ?

  225. Do you have this relationship with God

  226. where you have been forgiven

  227. for your rebellion against him,

  228. where you have trusted in him,

  229. and where you are now receiving the nutrients

  230. for your spiritual life

  231. from him and his word?

  232. Or are you separated from him?

  233. The Bible talks a lot about the benefits

  234. of those who are in Christ.

  235. It says that in Christ,

  236. we have forgiveness.

  237. In Christ, we are made alive to God.

  238. In Christ, we have eternal life.

  239. In Christ, we have freedom.

  240. In Christ, we become the children of God.

  241. And the list goes on and on and on.

  242. And what that means is that

  243. if you are here today and you are in Christ,

  244. then you have these things.

  245. And if you are here today

  246. and you're not in Christ,

  247. then you've cut yourself off

  248. from these things.

  249. And so what difference does it make

  250. whether we're in Christ or not?

  251. It makes a big difference.

  252. Because externally,

  253. the actions can look the same

  254. between people who are in Christ

  255. and who aren't.

  256. They can both go to church.

  257. They can both read their Bibles.

  258. They can both do service

  259. within the community.

  260. But the difference is

  261. the motivation behind these things

  262. and the heart behind these things.

  263. When someone is in Christ,

  264. they're going to serve in the community

  265. out of an overflow

  266. of the love that they've received from God.

  267. They're receiving

  268. all of this abundance of life from God.

  269. And it's like a cup that's overflowing.

  270. They want to share

  271. out of the excess of what they have.

  272. They have their identity secure

  273. and they go out and they serve.

  274. But someone who's not in Christ

  275. on the outside can look the same.

  276. They can go out,

  277. do the exact same acts of service

  278. within the community.

  279. But they're like an empty cup

  280. that's trying to fill themselves up

  281. with meaning by what they're doing.

  282. So they go out and they work

  283. and they work

  284. and they try really hard

  285. to build this identity

  286. through their service.

  287. And it can work for a while

  288. just like the leaf can stay green

  289. for a while.

  290. But eventually what happens is

  291. your identity becomes so tied

  292. to what you do

  293. that you have to keep working

  294. even when you've worked yourself

  295. to the bone

  296. and you're tired

  297. and you're exhausted

  298. and you know that you need a break.

  299. You have to keep going

  300. because the moment you stop

  301. you lose your identity

  302. because your identity

  303. is tied up in what you're doing.

  304. You've been working so hard

  305. to build up an identity

  306. through these acts of service

  307. and through doing good things.

  308. You can't live without them.

  309. You become dependent on them.

  310. Where someone who is in Christ

  311. who has that identity secure

  312. before they start

  313. is able to go

  314. and to serve

  315. and to love

  316. and to rest

  317. and to not fear

  318. losing their identity

  319. in that process

  320. of rest.

  321. And so

  322. as we start out today

  323. where are you?

  324. Are you in Christ

  325. or are you not?

  326. The verse continues.

  327. It says

  328. if anyone is in Christ

  329. he is a new creation.

  330. The old has passed away.

  331. Behold

  332. the new has come.

  333. It brings us

  334. to our second question.

  335. What are you?

  336. Are you new

  337. or are you old?

  338. The verse is very clear

  339. that when someone is in Christ

  340. they are a new creation.

  341. And the new has come

  342. and the old has passed away

  343. and there has been

  344. a transformation

  345. that has happened

  346. in their lives.

  347. And this transformation

  348. isn't just

  349. okay

  350. God's given you

  351. a second chance

  352. time to go

  353. try harder this time.

  354. It's not extra effort.

  355. It's not extra exertion.

  356. But it's a fundamental

  357. change of identity.

  358. They cease to be

  359. the old person

  360. and become

  361. someone new.

  362. And I think

  363. that for those of us

  364. who are in Christ

  365. this is something

  366. that a lot of us

  367. have a very hard time

  368. understanding.

  369. because

  370. we become a Christian

  371. and we look up

  372. and the world

  373. is exactly the same.

  374. And we don't feel

  375. any different.

  376. And we look around

  377. and we're like

  378. what has changed?

  379. And we think

  380. well since I'm a Christian

  381. I should be reading

  382. my Bible

  383. and we get to this verse

  384. and we think

  385. oh

  386. well that's supposed

  387. to be true about me

  388. but I don't necessarily

  389. feel like it's true.

  390. And so I think

  391. a lot of people

  392. in the church

  393. when they have

  394. that experience

  395. say alright

  396. this is supposed

  397. to be true of me

  398. I don't feel

  399. like it's true

  400. so I have to

  401. go out there

  402. and try and make

  403. it be true.

  404. We go put out

  405. this effort

  406. to make this idea

  407. of being new

  408. true because we feel

  409. like it's not

  410. already true

  411. in our lives.

  412. It's sort of like

  413. imagine this scenario

  414. with me.

  415. When I was a kid

  416. my grandfather

  417. had a crabapple tree

  418. in his front yard.

  419. Now crabapples

  420. aren't really edible

  421. they're like

  422. mini super sour apples

  423. that apparently

  424. can be used

  425. in certain dishes

  426. but even then

  427. his was an old

  428. sick crabapple tree

  429. so the apples

  430. that it would grow

  431. not only were they

  432. tiny and really sour

  433. but they were also

  434. rotten.

  435. You weren't going

  436. to eat the apples

  437. that grew on this tree

  438. and it wasn't

  439. the prettiest tree

  440. ever

  441. and then it would

  442. leave these little

  443. apples scattered

  444. all over the lawn

  445. every fall.

  446. So imagine that

  447. one day my grandmother

  448. had said hey

  449. I want that tree

  450. out of our yard.

  451. I want a nice

  452. new good apple tree

  453. there so we can

  454. enjoy the fruit

  455. from the apple.

  456. And my grandfather

  457. says alright

  458. I got this

  459. and he goes out

  460. to the garage

  461. and he grabs

  462. a huge piece

  463. of plywood

  464. and some paint

  465. and he sets

  466. up his shop

  467. and he paints

  468. a picture

  469. of a nice

  470. new beautiful tree

  471. and he carries

  472. this big piece

  473. of plywood outside

  474. and he sets it

  475. down on the ground

  476. in front of the tree

  477. and he walks

  478. inside and he says

  479. hey there it is

  480. new tree.

  481. Now is my grandmother

  482. going to be fooled

  483. by that?

  484. Of course not.

  485. Is anyone

  486. going to be fooled

  487. by that?

  488. No.

  489. And even if she

  490. was fooled

  491. by that temporarily

  492. the next moment

  493. that she goes

  494. outside to the

  495. front yard

  496. my grandfather

  497. has to scramble

  498. because the picture

  499. is obviously

  500. only going to

  501. cover one side

  502. of the tree.

  503. So he's got

  504. to run out there

  505. and pick up

  506. the picture

  507. and just

  508. constantly move

  509. it around the tree

  510. as she's moving

  511. around the yard

  512. so that he doesn't

  513. get busted

  514. for what he's done.

  515. What he's done

  516. is not going

  517. to be effective

  518. at giving

  519. new life

  520. to the tree.

  521. He's going

  522. to be living

  523. in fear

  524. and anxiety

  525. of getting

  526. caught

  527. the entire

  528. time

  529. and he's

  530. going to be

  531. exerting

  532. himself

  533. and putting

  534. out insane

  535. amounts of

  536. effort

  537. to keep

  538. up the lie

  539. and all the

  540. while there's

  541. still a dead

  542. tree behind

  543. the pretty

  544. mask.

  545. I think a lot

  546. of us think

  547. this is what

  548. happens when

  549. God makes us

  550. new.

  551. He just paints

  552. a new sign

  553. he puts it

  554. out there

  555. and then we

  556. are responsible

  557. from now on

  558. for carrying

  559. around this

  560. sign to cover

  561. up who we

  562. really are.

  563. We're afraid

  564. and anxious

  565. that we're

  566. going to get

  567. busted

  568. and we're

  569. exerting

  570. ourselves

  571. and exhausting

  572. ourselves

  573. because we

  574. know that

  575. what we're

  576. showing to

  577. everyone else

  578. is not the

  579. truth

  580. and at the

  581. same time

  582. we feel

  583. like we're

  584. dying

  585. inside.

  586. God.

  587. And guys

  588. I have

  589. good news

  590. for you.

  591. That type

  592. of change

  593. is not

  594. what this

  595. verse is

  596. talking about

  597. when it

  598. says that

  599. anyone who's

  600. in Christ

  601. is a new

  602. creation.

  603. No this

  604. verse is

  605. talking about

  606. something

  607. radically

  608. totally

  609. different.

  610. It's like

  611. if my

  612. grandfather

  613. had gone

  614. out there

  615. and he

  616. had dug

  617. up the

  618. old tree

  619. he had

  620. thrown it

  621. out and

  622. he had

  623. put a

  624. new tree

  625. in its

  626. place.

  627. And the

  628. new tree

  629. may look

  630. very similar

  631. on the

  632. outside to

  633. the old

  634. tree that

  635. was there

  636. before.

  637. My

  638. grandmother

  639. might even

  640. go out

  641. and be

  642. like is

  643. this really

  644. a different

  645. tree?

  646. Because it

  647. looks very

  648. similar to

  649. the one

  650. that was

  651. here before.

  652. But at

  653. harvest season

  654. when the

  655. fruit grows

  656. on the

  657. new tree

  658. they will

  659. see a

  660. difference

  661. because the

  662. healthy tree

  663. is going

  664. to grow

  665. healthy

  666. fruit.

  667. And when

  668. the fruit

  669. grows

  670. they're going

  671. to see

  672. these are

  673. not rotten

  674. sour crab

  675. apples

  676. but these

  677. are real

  678. apples.

  679. And the

  680. Bible says

  681. that that

  682. is the

  683. type of

  684. change

  685. that God

  686. affects

  687. in our

  688. lives.

  689. Even though

  690. we may

  691. not subjectively

  692. feel like

  693. that is

  694. true the

  695. Bible says

  696. the moment

  697. that we

  698. trust in

  699. Jesus for

  700. salvation

  701. God affects

  702. that change

  703. in our

  704. lives.

  705. objectively

  706. true whether

  707. we feel

  708. it or

  709. not.

  710. And so

  711. our job

  712. is not

  713. to go

  714. out and

  715. hold up

  716. a sign

  717. to hide

  718. what's

  719. behind

  720. us

  721. but rather

  722. to live

  723. the reality

  724. that we

  725. have a

  726. new

  727. identity.

  728. And I

  729. know the

  730. feeling of

  731. being that

  732. person who's

  733. holding up

  734. the sign

  735. running around

  736. while you

  737. feel like

  738. you're dead

  739. inside.

  740. I know

  741. from experience

  742. it is

  743. exhausting.

  744. It is

  745. not fun.

  746. It is

  747. not

  748. where I

  749. would want

  750. any of

  751. us to

  752. be.

  753. And if

  754. you are

  755. here today

  756. and you

  757. feel like

  758. you're in

  759. that place

  760. where you're

  761. just trying

  762. so hard

  763. and you

  764. feel like

  765. you can

  766. never get

  767. it right

  768. I would

  769. encourage you

  770. to find

  771. me or

  772. Chris or

  773. Jeremy and

  774. talk with

  775. one of us

  776. after service

  777. and we'd

  778. love to

  779. pray with

  780. you about

  781. that.

  782. Because the

  783. reality is

  784. that Christ

  785. came not

  786. to give

  787. us a new

  788. facade so

  789. that we

  790. can put

  791. an effort

  792. to make

  793. everyone

  794. else think

  795. we're

  796. new.

  797. But Christ

  798. came to

  799. transform us

  800. from the

  801. inside and

  802. to make

  803. us new.

  804. Like the

  805. new tree

  806. in the

  807. yard.

  808. It may

  809. look similar

  810. on the

  811. outside.

  812. The harvest

  813. is going

  814. to show

  815. the reality

  816. that there

  817. is something

  818. new.

  819. The old

  820. isn't just

  821. hiding,

  822. waiting to

  823. be discovered

  824. behind the

  825. new face.

  826. the old

  827. has been

  828. completely

  829. uprooted

  830. and replaced

  831. by the

  832. new.

  833. So where

  834. are you?

  835. Are you

  836. in Christ

  837. or not?

  838. What are

  839. you?

  840. Are you

  841. new?

  842. Are you

  843. old?

  844. Are you

  845. old but

  846. holding up

  847. a mask

  848. that says

  849. that you're

  850. new to

  851. the world?

  852. And then

  853. my third

  854. question for

  855. us today,

  856. what do

  857. you do?

  858. we've

  859. already

  860. mentioned

  861. the old

  862. person and

  863. the new

  864. person,

  865. the person

  866. who's not

  867. in Christ

  868. and the

  869. person who

  870. is in

  871. Christ,

  872. can live

  873. lives that

  874. on the

  875. outside look

  876. very similar.

  877. But the

  878. heart behind

  879. it is very

  880. different.

  881. The motivation

  882. behind that

  883. life is

  884. very different.

  885. And so the

  886. fruit that

  887. comes out of

  888. that life

  889. will be

  890. very different.

  891. Just as

  892. the old

  893. apple tree

  894. and the

  895. new apple

  896. tree can

  897. look similar,

  898. but at

  899. harvest time,

  900. the old

  901. tree is

  902. going to

  903. grow rotten,

  904. bad apples.

  905. And the

  906. new tree is

  907. going to

  908. bear new,

  909. fresh,

  910. beautiful,

  911. delicious apples.

  912. The old

  913. man, the

  914. old person,

  915. is going to

  916. grow fruit or

  917. produce results

  918. in their lives

  919. that are in

  920. line with

  921. their old

  922. identity.

  923. And the

  924. new person

  925. is going to

  926. produce results

  927. in their

  928. lives that

  929. are in

  930. line with

  931. their new

  932. identity.

  933. reality.

  934. And so

  935. how does

  936. a new

  937. creation live?

  938. If you

  939. read through

  940. these verses

  941. that we have

  942. right here,

  943. there's a

  944. list.

  945. And the

  946. list is too

  947. big for us

  948. to go through

  949. entirely with

  950. the time that

  951. we have left

  952. today.

  953. But there's

  954. two things

  955. that I want

  956. to hit on,

  957. two things I

  958. want to talk

  959. about from

  960. this list

  961. that are

  962. major markers

  963. of the fact

  964. that we are

  965. new,

  966. that we are

  967. changed,

  968. that we are

  969. different.

  970. And the

  971. first is

  972. in verse

  973. 20,

  974. slash

  975. 18 through

  976. 20,

  977. I'll read

  978. it all.

  979. It says,

  980. All this

  981. is from

  982. God,

  983. who through

  984. Christ

  985. reconciled

  986. us to

  987. himself,

  988. and gave

  989. us the

  990. ministry of

  991. reconciliation.

  992. That is,

  993. in Christ,

  994. God was

  995. reconciling the

  996. world to

  997. himself,

  998. not counting

  999. their trespasses

  1000. against them,

  1001. and entrusting

  1002. to us the

  1003. message of

  1004. reconciliation.

  1005. Therefore,

  1006. we are

  1007. ambassadors for

  1008. Christ,

  1009. God making

  1010. his appeal

  1011. through us.

  1012. We implore

  1013. you on

  1014. behalf of

  1015. Christ,

  1016. be reconciled

  1017. to God.

  1018. And what

  1019. it's saying

  1020. here is that

  1021. if we are

  1022. the new

  1023. creation,

  1024. then one

  1025. way that

  1026. our lives

  1027. are to be

  1028. fundamentally

  1029. different is

  1030. that we are

  1031. to be what

  1032. he calls

  1033. ministers of

  1034. reconciliation,

  1035. or ambassadors

  1036. for Christ.

  1037. Christ.

  1038. If you think

  1039. about what

  1040. an ambassador

  1041. does,

  1042. they're a

  1043. foreigner.

  1044. They come

  1045. in from

  1046. an outside

  1047. country to

  1048. a foreign

  1049. land as a

  1050. representative of

  1051. their government.

  1052. The Bible

  1053. says that when

  1054. we become

  1055. Christians,

  1056. we are made

  1057. new.

  1058. We're not the

  1059. same old people

  1060. as we were

  1061. before.

  1062. We're something

  1063. different.

  1064. We no longer

  1065. represent just

  1066. humanity,

  1067. but we

  1068. represent a

  1069. new king,

  1070. Christ.

  1071. And Christ,

  1072. our king,

  1073. has sent us

  1074. to the world

  1075. as his

  1076. ambassadors to

  1077. deliver a

  1078. very, very

  1079. important message

  1080. to everyone

  1081. around us.

  1082. And that

  1083. message is that

  1084. we are alienated

  1085. from God,

  1086. but God,

  1087. in his great

  1088. love,

  1089. wants us to

  1090. be reconciled

  1091. to him.

  1092. Now,

  1093. this is something

  1094. that is unique

  1095. to people

  1096. who are in

  1097. Christ and

  1098. who have

  1099. been made

  1100. new creations

  1101. because if

  1102. you haven't

  1103. experienced this

  1104. reconciliation with

  1105. God yourself,

  1106. it's very, very

  1107. difficult to

  1108. invite others

  1109. to experience

  1110. that reconciliation

  1111. and new

  1112. relationship.

  1113. But if we are

  1114. new creations

  1115. and we've

  1116. experienced this

  1117. reconciliation with

  1118. God,

  1119. and we have

  1120. this new

  1121. relationship with

  1122. him and we

  1123. are new

  1124. creations,

  1125. then he says

  1126. that's not

  1127. something that's

  1128. supposed to

  1129. stay with us.

  1130. It's something

  1131. that we're

  1132. supposed to

  1133. take and

  1134. spread to

  1135. the world

  1136. as his

  1137. ambassadors.

  1138. We are

  1139. God's primary

  1140. means of

  1141. taking this

  1142. message into

  1143. the world

  1144. if we are

  1145. his people.

  1146. Which means

  1147. that ministry

  1148. is actually

  1149. not just the

  1150. job of the

  1151. people on

  1152. staff at

  1153. the church.

  1154. It's the

  1155. job of

  1156. everyone who

  1157. is in

  1158. Christ.

  1159. People think

  1160. of me as

  1161. the student

  1162. minister or

  1163. something along

  1164. those lines,

  1165. but actually

  1166. there are way

  1167. more students

  1168. here who

  1169. should be

  1170. doing student

  1171. ministry than

  1172. me.

  1173. Because there

  1174. are way more

  1175. students here

  1176. than there are

  1177. of me.

  1178. And every

  1179. student who is

  1180. in Christ

  1181. should be a

  1182. minister to

  1183. the other

  1184. students in

  1185. their school.

  1186. If you are

  1187. working in a

  1188. business place,

  1189. then you should

  1190. be in business

  1191. place ministry.

  1192. Because that is

  1193. what Christ has

  1194. called every

  1195. Christian in the

  1196. business place to

  1197. be.

  1198. A minister of

  1199. reconciliation who

  1200. as an ambassador

  1201. of God goes out

  1202. and tells the

  1203. world around them

  1204. that God wants

  1205. a relationship

  1206. with you.

  1207. And this is a

  1208. distinctive mark of

  1209. someone who is a

  1210. new creation.

1211. So how do we do

  1212. that?

  1213. What does that

  1214. look like?

  1215. Maybe if you are

  1216. a parent, you have

  1217. kids, they are

  1218. fighting, and you

  1219. talk to them about

  1220. the need to

  1221. reconcile with each

  1222. other, but also at

  1223. the same time

  1224. mention the fact

  1225. that even more

  1226. important than

  1227. needing to reconcile

  1228. with each other,

  1229. they are alienated

  1230. from God, and

  1231. they need to be

  1232. reconciled in that

  1233. relationship.

  1234. Maybe if you have

  1235. a disagreement with

  1236. someone, something

  1237. that you really

  1238. want to win, that

  1239. you learn to

  1240. swallow your pride

  1241. and let the other

  1242. person win.

  1243. That's weird.

  1244. People in the

  1245. world won't get

  1246. it.

  1247. Maybe they'll even

  1248. ask you questions.

  1249. Why?

  1250. When you had the

  1251. right to win that

  1252. argument, your

  1253. arguments were good.

  1254. The other person

  1255. had no ground to

  1256. stand on.

  1257. If you had pressed

  1258. hard enough, you

  1259. could have won it.

1260. But it will open up

  1261. opportunities to share

  1262. with them that I

  1263. serve a God who,

  1264. when we had wronged

  1265. him, came and took

  1266. the initiative to be

  1267. reconciled to us.

  1268. And I want to

  1269. emulate that to the

  1270. world around me and

  1271. show examples of

  1272. even when I'm right,

1273. even when I can get

1274. my way and I have the

1275. right to do it, that I

1276. give it up and I serve

  1277. for the sake of

  1278. reconciliation, for the

  1279. sake of maintaining

  1280. that relationship.

  1281. relationship.

1282. And I do it so that you

1283. can see how amazing of

1284. an experience it is and

  1285. so that hopefully you

  1286. will want to be

  1287. reconciled to God.

1288. And so God calls us to

  1289. be these ministers of

  1290. reconciliation, people

1291. who go out and show

  1292. the world the wonders

  1293. and joys of being

  1294. reconciled to him and

1295. who call people to be

  1296. reconciled to God.

1297. So if you're here today

  1298. and you haven't yet

  1299. entered into this

  1300. relationship with God,

  1301. if you haven't gotten

1302. to the point where you

1303. are now in Christ, I

  1304. would encourage you to

  1305. be reconciled to God.

  1306. And if you're here

1307. today and you are in

  1308. that relationship with

  1309. Christ and you have

  1310. been reconciled to him,

  1311. my encouragement to

1312. you is to be a minister

  1313. of reconciliation.

  1314. Be someone who goes

  1315. into the world and

1316. calls others to join in

  1317. that relationship as

  1318. well.

1319. The second thing I want

1320. us to see about the

  1321. way that new creation

  1322. lives differently is in

  1323. verse 21.

  1324. It says,

1325. For our sake he made

1326. him to be sin who knew

1327. no sin, so that in him

  1328. we might become the

  1329. righteousness of God.

  1330. God.

  1331. Righteousness is a big

  1332. word that we don't

1333. really use today, but it

  1334. means having a right

  1335. relationship or a right

  1336. standing with God.

1337. It says that when we

  1338. were sinners, when we

  1339. were separated from God

  1340. and alienated from him,

  1341. Christ came in, even

  1342. though he was perfect,

  1343. and took on that

  1344. separation and alienation

1345. so that we can have a

  1346. new right standing and

  1347. right relationship with

  1348. God.

  1349. God.

1350. If you are a new creation,

1351. you have a new standing

  1352. and a new relationship

  1353. with God.

  1354. The wording of this

  1355. verse is huge.

  1356. Notice it doesn't just

  1357. say we have the

  1358. righteousness of God.

1359. It says we become the

  1360. righteousness of God.

  1361. There's a big difference

  1362. between having something

  1363. and being something.

1364. If I want to go to China,

1365. I have to go and apply

1366. at the office and then

1367. pay lots of money and I

  1368. get a China visa.

1369. And when I have this

  1370. China visa, if I

  1371. accidentally forget it

1372. when I'm going to the

1373. border, they won't let me

  1374. into the country.

1375. If I go into the country

1376. and I break the law, they

1377. can take away the visa.

1378. And even if I follow all

  1379. of the rules perfectly,

  1380. eventually the visa expires

1381. and I have to put in more

  1382. effort of applying again

1383. and paying again to get

  1384. another visa.

1385. In contrast, I was born

1386. in America and I am an

  1387. American.

1388. Unless the USA ceases to

1389. be a country or they

  1390. severely change their

1391. citizenship laws, I am an

  1392. American.

1393. If I lose all of my

1394. identification, I can go to

  1395. the American consulate and

1396. they will work with me to

1397. get me a new identification

1398. to prove that I am an

  1399. American.

1400. because it's part of my

  1401. identity.

  1402. When you have something,

1403. it's like the China visa.

1404. It can easily be taken

  1405. away.

1406. You have to put in effort

  1407. to maintain it.

1408. But when something is part

1409. of your identity, it's part

1410. of who you are and it can't

  1411. be taken away.

1412. If we have the righteousness

1413. of God, we have to work.

  1414. We have to try.

1415. We have to hold on to it

  1416. to maintain it.

1417. But if we are the

  1418. righteousness of God, then

1419. it's something that God has

1420. implanted in us as part of

  1421. our new identity.

1422. When he makes us new, that

1423. is part of our new

  1424. identity.

  1425. Something that can't be

1426. ripped away from us unless

1427. God ceases to exist or God

1428. changes his rules about how

1429. to get into his family,

1430. which the Bible is very

  1431. clear will not happen.

1432. And so when it says that we

  1433. have become the righteousness

1434. of God, we have a new

  1435. identity implanted in us.

1436. And if you have that identity,

1437. I encourage you this week to

1438. live in obedience to God and

1439. to avoid sin completely, not

1440. even to flirt with it.

1441. Because the Bible is clear that

1442. as part of our new identity, as

1443. being in Christ, sin is

  1444. fundamentally opposed to that

  1445. new identity.

1446. It rips us apart from him.

1447. And if we have been reunited,

1448. sin is now opposed to our

  1449. identity.

1450. Rebellion against God is now

  1451. fundamentally opposed to who

  1452. we are.

1453. It's not something that we do

1454. to try and earn God's favor.

1455. It's not something we do,

1456. obedience isn't something we do

1457. to try and make God love us

  1458. more.

1459. Obedience is something that we

1460. do because it's part of who we

1461. are now if we are in Christ.

1462. And so my challenge to you, if

1463. you are new, if you are in

1464. Christ this week, be a minister

1465. of reconciliation and live as

  1466. the righteousness of God,

1467. walking in obedience to him,

1468. not even coming close to sin,

1469. even though it can be so

1470. appealing and hold out so many

  1471. promises to us.

1472. Remember that if you are a new

  1473. creation, sin is fundamentally

1474. opposed to your new identity.

1475. So the big question overarching,

  1476. are you new?

  1477. Where are you?

1478. Are you in Christ or not?

  1479. What are you?

1480. Are you a new creation?

1481. Or are you simply an old

1482. creation holding up a mask,

1483. trying to make everyone think

  1484. that you're okay?

1485. And if you are a new creation,

  1486. what do you do?

1487. Are you living in line with your

  1488. new identity?

1489. God came to make us new.

1490. God came not to give us the

1491. appearance of life, but to give

1492. us life and life abundantly.

1493. And as we enter into this new

1494. year, I pray that each of us would

1495. see that and experience it and

1496. live that new life that we've been

  1497. given in Christ.

1498. Or accept the new life that we've

1499. been offered in Christ, if we

  1500. haven't done that yet.

  1501. Let's pray.

1502. Father, we thank you for your love

  1503. for us.

1504. We thank you for this promise that

1505. if anyone is in Christ, we are new

  1506. creations.

1507. That it's not something that we have

1508. to earn on our own.

1509. It's not something we have to fake to

  1510. keep up appearances of.

1511. But it's something that you have made

1512. objectively real in our lives.

1513. God, I pray that we would recognize

  1514. that reality.

1515. That we wouldn't be shaped by what

1516. we think of ourselves on a

1517. subjective level, but that we would

1518. remember the objective truth of the

1519. change that you have brought in our

  1520. lives.

1521. I pray that if anyone's here who

1522. hasn't yet had that change, that

1523. they would see your beauty today and

1524. fall in love with you and trust in

  1525. you.

1526. And I pray that each of us this week

1527. would live in line with who we are in

  1528. you.

1529. And in Jesus' name, amen.

  1530. Amen.
