  1. So Mark chapter 9 at verse 42.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  2. And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin,

  3. it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea

  4. with a large millstone tied around his neck.

  5. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.

  6. It is better for you to enter life maimed

  7. than with two hands to go into hell where the fire never goes out.

  8. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off.

  9. It is better for you to enter life crippled

  10. than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

  11. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.

  12. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye

  13. than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell

  14. where the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.

  15. Everyone will be salted with fire.

  16. Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness,

  17. how can you make it salty again?

  18. Have salt in yourselves and be at peace with each other.

  19. Hard words from Jesus.

  20. The words that he wants us to hear.

  21. Let's begin by thinking about listening to warning signs.

  22. Imagine a teacher sitting down with a pupil

  23. saying you need to have focus in class and doing your studies

  24. or you will fail.

  25. Or imagine visiting the doctor and he sits you down and says,

  26. well, you need to cut down on these fatty foods and high sugar

  27. for the sake of your heart.

  28. Or a parent, an anxious parent saying to their child,

  29. they don't take drugs because they can kill.

  30. Now these are all different in one sense,

  31. but very similar in another.

  32. These are all warnings that come from reliable guides

  33. and they're all spoken out of concern for a person's future.

  34. And especially when we think in family terms,

  35. they're words spoken out of deep love.

  36. Now as we begin, it's important that we hear Jesus teaching on hell

  37. in these same terms.

  38. We need to hear what Jesus says about hell

  39. because in society, hell is regarded by many as comical,

  40. as a fun place.

  41. You've maybe seen the buses going around the city center

  42. saying that your mortgage experience can be hell or heaven.

  43. You're really diminishing both.

  44. Or cynically, you'll find people who imagine

  45. that hell is an invention of the church

  46. so that the church could control society

  47. and try and curb bad behavior.

  48. And so we struggle as a society to know what to do with hell.

  49. And in church, sometimes it's the same thing.

  50. It feels to us as one of those jagged edges

  51. that we like to smooth over.

  52. Sometimes we're anxious about the offense of the gospel,

  53. and so it's something that we'd rather push to one side.

  54. It's not for polite conversation.

  55. But we need to hear Jesus

  56. as a reliable and a loving guide

  57. who wants to warn about reality,

  58. who wants to teach us why

  59. recovering the doctrine of hell is important for us as a church,

  60. and to see why it matters so much.

  61. So let's begin with this.

  62. Why do we need the truth about hell?

  63. We need it because Jesus teaches about it.

  64. To be faithful to the Bible

  65. and to be faithful to Jesus as teacher,

  66. this isn't a topic we can take off the table.

  67. Because when you look at the teaching of Jesus

  68. and you look at the whole Bible,

  69. we realize that Jesus talks about hell

  70. more than anybody else in the whole Bible.

  71. In fact, more than he speaks about heaven,

  72. he speaks words of warning about hell.

  73. And so that leaves us a question.

  74. Is Jesus angry?

  75. Is he controlling?

  76. Is he vindictive?

  77. Is he mean?

  78. Is he unfit to listen to?

  79. And it's where we need to recognize who Jesus is.

  80. We need to go to the gospel.

  81. The same Jesus who warns about hell,

  82. it is Jesus who says,

  83. I am the good shepherd,

  84. and I will lay down my life for my sheep.

  85. Who says,

  86. greater love has no one than this,

  87. that a man lay down his life for his friends,

  88. and he does exactly that.

  89. He is the one who gives teaching

  90. about the good Samaritan,

  91. encouraging us to love whoever is in front of us

  92. who needs mercy and help,

  93. and he demonstrates that in his life.

  94. He gives us the golden rule

  95. that societies all around the world

  96. have appreciated due to others

  97. as you would have them do to you.

  98. When you read the gospels,

  99. you encounter the compassion,

  100. the love and the mercy of Jesus

  101. on page after page after page,

  102. you find him weeping,

  103. weeping at the tomb of Lazarus.

  104. You find him weeping over the city of Jerusalem,

  105. which refuses to repent and trust in Jesus.

  106. Jesus is not an angry man.

  107. Jesus is the most loving man

  108. who has ever met,

  109. who has ever lived.

  110. The context here,

  111. where we find ourselves in Mark chapter nine,

  112. Jesus is beginning to teach

  113. and prepare his disciples

  114. for his journey to the cross.

  115. And what's the cross all about?

  116. Jesus is going to suffer and die in love

  117. and so that rebel sinners like us

  118. might be forgiven.

  119. That he will endure hell on the cross

  120. to save us from hell,

  121. to give us the invitation to trust in him

  122. and enjoy the glory of heaven instead.

  123. So we need to recognize

  124. that this is the loving Lord Jesus

  125. who's speaking about hell.

  126. So why does he speak so graphically?

  127. Let's just remind ourselves of verse 47 and 48

  128. to see the graphic language that Jesus uses.

  129. If your eye causes you to sin,

  130. pluck it out.

  131. It's better for you to enter the kingdom of God

  132. with one eye

  133. than to have two eyes

  134. and be thrown into hell

  135. where their worm does not die

  136. and the fire is not quenched.

  137. I'm not a smoker,

  138. but I've seen the pictures

  139. that the health boards now put on cigarette packets.

  140. Why are they doing that?

  141. They're issuing a warning

  142. to somebody.

  143. If you smoke these cigarettes,

  144. this picture of your lungs

  145. may be your reality.

  146. A dramatic way to try and encourage someone

  147. towards a different habit.

  148. Jesus uses this graphic language

  149. so that we will take hell seriously.

  150. That as he teaches about hell in the gospels,

  151. we discover a place of conscious,

  152. eternal torment.

  153. A place where God's active punishment

  154. is failed

  155. for all eternity.

  156. It's a place of absolute horror.

  157. And so Jesus uses this graphic imagery

  158. in order to wake us up

  159. and in order to change our priorities.

  160. Sometimes we can become so fixed on the now

  161. that we forget about what comes next.

  162. What happens when we die?

  163. And Jesus is reminding us

  164. of these two eternal realities.

  165. He's exposing the danger

  166. to show us the need of rescue.

  167. And of course,

  168. Jesus comes to be the rescuer.

  169. He is the real savior

  170. to the greatest problem

  171. that all of us face.

  172. And so Jesus teaches about hell

  173. for that reason.

  174. J.I. Packer,

  175. the biblical scholar,

  176. says this,

  177. which I find really helpful.

  178. The purpose of the Bible teaching

  179. about hell

  180. is to make us appreciate,

  181. thankfully embrace,

  182. and rationally prefer

  183. the grace of Christ

  184. that saves us from hell.

  185. It is really a mercy to mankind

  186. that God in Scripture

  187. is as explicit

  188. about hell.

  189. We cannot say

  190. we have not been warned.

  191. And indeed,

  192. here we've been warned

  193. by the loving Lord Jesus.

  194. So we need the teaching of hell

  195. because Jesus teaches about hell.

  196. We also need it

  197. because the reality of hell

  198. teaches us

  199. that sin is serious.

  200. Now we're in the middle

  201. of Jesus teaching

  202. his disciples

  203. from verse 33 onwards.

  204. And really what he's been saying

  205. to them is that

  206. there are three disasters

  207. for church mission

  208. that can happen

  209. within a Christian community.

  210. One is when you start

  211. fighting over rank

  212. and greatness.

  213. One is where there is rivalry

  214. and them and us attitudes.

  215. And we thought about

  216. those last week.

  217. But the third disaster

  218. is when even within the church

  219. there's a lack of holiness

  220. and people get casual

  221. about sin.

  222. And so Jesus issues

  223. this start warning

  224. to his own people

  225. in the first instance.

  226. Let's look at what he says

  227. to them.

  228. In verse 42

  229. he says,

  230. If anyone causes

  231. one of these little ones

  232. who believe in me

  233. to sin

  234. it would be better

  235. for him to be thrown

  236. into the sea

  237. with a large millstone

  238. tied around his neck.

  239. So here's what he's saying.

  240. Here's the warning.

  241. Your sin

  242. might make someone else

  243. turn from Jesus.

  244. And he's saying

  245. that's a dreadful offense

  246. to be avoided

  247. at all costs.

  248. How can that happen?

  249. Well perhaps

  250. there's a younger Christian

  251. watching

  252. an older Christian

  253. fall into sin

  254. or be guilty

  255. of hypocrisy.

  256. Perhaps it's lack of care

  257. for someone's

  258. weaker conscience.

  259. And somebody is led astray

  260. and somebody is led

  261. to walk away from Jesus.

  262. And so he issues

  263. a warning

  264. about our sin

  265. having consequences

  266. for others.

  267. Does a similar thing

  268. in verse 50.

  269. He talks about salt.

  270. Salt

  271. intended to preserve

  272. and to add flavor.

  273. Salt is good

  274. but if it loses its saltiness

  275. how can you make it salty again?

  276. Have salt in yourselves

  277. and be at peace

  278. with each other.

  279. So he's saying

  280. to the church

  281. that our sin

  282. if we start fighting

  283. amongst ourselves

  284. if we start comparing

  285. and competing

  286. if we get casual

  287. about sin

  288. if we don't have peace

  289. our sin as a church

  290. as a community

  291. might stop others

  292. from ever wanting

  293. anything to do

  294. with the Lord Jesus.

  295. We can be guilty

  296. of being

  297. unsalty.

  298. We don't preserve

  299. we don't add flavor

  300. we can be judgmental

  301. and hypocritical

  302. and mean-spirited

  303. and harsh

  304. not living like Jesus

  305. in such a way

  306. that somebody

  307. might look at the church

  308. and say

  309. well why in the world

  310. would we bother

  311. listening to what

  312. they have to say

  313. because they seem

  314. miserable and unpleasant

  315. and I want nothing

  316. to do with them.

  317. So there's a warning

  318. two ways

  319. our sin individually

  320. can cause others

  321. to fall away

  322. our sin as a community

  323. can cause others

  324. to never look at Jesus

  325. in the first place.

  326. And then in that

  327. middle section

  328. from verse 43 to 48

  329. he talks about

  330. the personal effect

  331. of sin

  332. and he calls us

  333. to radical obedience.

  334. Let's read verse 43.

  335. If your hand causes you

  336. to sin

  337. cut it off

  338. it's better for you

  339. to enter life maimed

  340. than with two hands

  341. to go into hell

  342. where the fire

  343. never goes out.

  344. So again

  345. Jesus is saying

  346. there are two

  347. eternal destinies

  348. that there's no

  349. middle ground

  350. that is

  351. in verse 43

  352. life

  353. further on

  354. talked about

  355. the kingdom of God

  356. that is the reality

  357. of heaven

  358. with God

  359. that is

  360. perfection

  361. to look forward to

  362. an eternity

  363. marked by love

  364. and joy

  365. and fellowship

  366. and community

  367. or there is

  368. hell

  369. that is

  370. unending

  371. punishment

  372. for our

  373. willful sin

  374. and rebellion

  375. and what Jesus

  376. is saying

  377. that we should

  378. do anything

  379. that it takes

  380. to ensure

  381. that we find

  382. a way to life.

  383. If our hand

  384. causes us to sin

  385. cut it off.

  386. Maybe we know

  387. the story.

  388. That was then

  389. turned into a movie

  390. in about 127 hours

  391. a climber

  392. called Aaron Ralston

  393. who was

  394. canyoning

  395. or bouldering

  396. in Utah

  397. and his arm

  398. got trapped

  399. and he couldn't

  400. get it out

  401. and he spent

  402. five days

  403. there in the

  404. blazing heat

  405. until he realized

  406. the only way

  407. he was going to get

  408. out of this alive

  409. was by cutting off

  410. his own arm

  411. and he had to make

  412. that choice

  413. literally sawing

  414. off his arm

  415. in order to stay

  416. alive.

  417. Jesus is saying

  418. cut off

  419. in our lives

  420. whatever would

  421. cause us

  422. to dishonor God

  423. whatever would

  424. cause us

  425. to walk

  426. from God

  427. whatever would

  428. cause us

  429. to look at

  430. things that are

  431. impure

  432. and unworthy

  433. of God

  434. like a surgeon

  435. amputating

  436. an arm or a leg

  437. in order to

  438. save a life.

  439. Hell is serious

  440. and sin

  441. is serious.

  442. I think

  443. sometimes we

  444. struggle

  445. with the reality

  446. of hell

  447. because we fail

  448. in the first place

  449. to take the holiness

  450. of God seriously

  451. and we think

  452. about sin

  453. the way perhaps

  454. we think about

  455. a parking ticket

  456. or a speeding

  457. thing.

  458. Everybody does it

  459. it's no big deal.

  460. We fail to take

  461. the seriousness

  462. of sin

  463. seriously

  464. and Jesus

  465. is looking

  466. to correct

  467. our thinking

  468. by giving us

  469. these stark images

  470. and stark warnings.

  471. one of the things

  472. that he wants

  473. to encourage

  474. in us

  475. is a healthy

  476. fear of sin

  477. it should sometimes

  478. to have a healthy

  479. fear

  480. and sin

  481. is something

  482. we are to be

  483. afraid of.

  484. perhaps you saw

  485. the story

  486. in the news

  487. this week

  488. of the man

  489. in the Czech

  490. Republic

  491. who kept

  492. a couple

  493. of lions

  494. as household

  495. pets.

  496. He used to

  497. walk them

  498. down the street

  499. and he fed

  500. them

  501. they were in the

  502. house and

  503. garden with him

  504. it only became

  505. public knowledge

  506. because one of

  507. those lions

  508. mauled him

  509. to death.

  510. there are some

  511. things that we

  512. don't mess

  513. around with

  514. and we need

  515. to have a

  516. healthy fear

  517. of.

  518. One of the

  519. images that

  520. God gives

  521. to Cain

  522. actually

  523. in Genesis

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  524. chapter 4

  525. is of sin

  526. as being

  527. like a lion.

  528. He tells

  529. Cain to

  530. watch out

  531. as sin

  532. is like a

  533. lion

  534. crouching

  535. at your

  536. door

  537. it seeks

  538. to destroy

  539. you

  540. and Cain

  541. is invited

  542. to seek

  543. to master

  544. sin

  545. as the old

  546. Puritan

  547. John Owen

  548. said

  549. be killing

  550. sin

  551. or it

  552. will be

  553. killing

  554. you.

  555. Jesus

  556. shows us

  557. sin

  558. is serious.

  559. The cross

  560. of Jesus

  561. shows

  562. that sin

  563. is serious.

  564. What's

  565. happening

  566. on the

  567. cross

  568. as Jesus

  569. dies?

  570. Jesus

  571. is facing

  572. the curse

  573. he goes

  574. under the

  575. curse of

  576. God

  577. for

  578. disobedience

  579. not because

  580. Jesus has

  581. done anything

  582. wrong

  583. he is

  584. sinless

  585. and perfect

  586. but he

  587. does that

  588. in the

  589. place

  590. of his

  591. people.

  592. We find

  593. Jesus

  594. crying out

  595. my God

  596. my God

  597. why have

  598. you forsaken

  599. me?

  600. Jesus

  601. is cut

  602. off

  603. and abandoned

  604. at the

  605. cross

  606. because God

  607. the holy

  608. God

  609. can have

  610. nothing

  611. to do

  612. with sin

  613. and Jesus

  614. has become

  615. the sin

  616. bearer of

  617. the world

  618. there on

  619. the cross.

  620. that's

  621. not all

  622. we see

  623. at the

  624. cross

  625. the cross

  626. also

  627. shows us

  628. the love

  629. of God

  630. because

  631. Jesus

  632. is willing

  633. to go

  634. there.

  635. The

  636. father

  637. is willing

  638. to send

  639. Jesus

  640. to stand

  641. in our

  642. place

  643. to take

  644. our

  645. punishment

  646. in order

  647. to give

  648. us forgiveness

  649. in order

  650. to save

  651. us from

  652. our sin

  653. and to

  654. save us

  655. from hell.

  656. Jesus

  657. goes

  658. to the

  659. place of

  660. hell

  661. and punishment

  662. for us.

  663. We need

  664. hell to

  665. remind us

  666. that sin

  667. is serious.

  668. We also

  669. need hell

  670. because it

  671. reminds us

  672. that sharing

  673. the gospel

  674. is urgent.

  675. I think

  676. one of the

  677. most convicting

  678. things that

  679. I've read

  680. and a number

  681. of occasions

  682. I read it

  683. again a couple

  684. of weeks

  685. ago

  686. a quote

  687. from

  688. the magician

  689. Penn Jillette

  690. there's the

  691. magician

  692. jewel

  693. Penn and

  694. teller

  695. Penn Jillette

  696. he's not

  697. a Christian

  698. he said

  699. this in

  700. an interview

  701. once

  702. how much

  703. do you

  704. have to

  705. hate

  706. somebody

  707. to believe

  708. that there

  709. is a

  710. heaven

  711. and hell

  712. but not

  713. to tell

  714. them

  715. because of

  716. social

  717. awkwardness

  718. sometimes

  719. we forget

  720. just how

  721. urgent the

  722. gospel is

  723. and I

  724. find that

  725. quote really

  726. convicting

  727. I wonder

  728. if you're

  729. a Christian

  730. here today

  731. do you

  732. identify

  733. with this

  734. missionary

  735. who was

  736. speaking

  737. this week

  738. saying

  739. why is

  740. it that

  741. I am

  742. willing

  743. to share

  744. my life

  745. with another

  746. person

  747. but I

  748. often hesitate

  749. to share

  750. my God

  751. with that

  752. person

  753. being honest

  754. there are many

  755. things that can

  756. get in the way

  757. of sharing the

  758. gospel

  759. whether it's

  760. fear

  761. whether it's

  762. questions of

  763. is this the

  764. right time

  765. whether it's

  766. a sense of

  767. politeness

  768. or social

  769. awkwardness

  770. that cause

  771. us to

  772. say

  773. nothing

  774. and when

  775. we do

  776. that

  777. what's

  778. happening

  779. we are

  780. lessening

  781. that sense

  782. that this

  783. is a life

  784. and death

  785. situation

  786. that our

  787. gospel message

  788. has a life

  789. and death

  790. urgency

  791. attached

  792. to it

  793. we know

  794. as Christians

  795. that we're

  796. called to be

  797. marked by

  798. love and

  799. care

  800. but if

  801. our care

  802. only extends

  803. to the

  804. physical

  805. and never

  806. extends to the

  807. spiritual

  808. and the

  809. eternal

  810. then our

  811. love

  812. is out of

  813. balance

  814. that it's

  815. not enough

  816. just to care

  817. for people's

  818. bodily needs

  819. we also need

  820. to care for

  821. their souls

  822. to care

  823. for their

  824. salvation

  825. and again

  826. Jesus is

  827. teaching his

  828. disciples

  829. and he's

  830. teaching his

  831. church about

  832. hell

  833. in order

  834. to soften

  835. and melt

  836. our hearts

  837. and to

  838. get us

  839. to that

  840. place

  841. where we

  842. would love

  843. others

  844. more than

  845. our

  846. maybe our

  847. reputation

  848. or our

  849. sense of

  850. dis-ease

  851. about having

  852. those

  853. conversations

  854. that he's

  855. reminding us

  856. about hell

  857. to give us

  858. a sense of

  859. urgency

  860. to replace

  861. a sense

  862. of apathy

  863. sometimes we

  864. can be so

  865. concerned

  866. will I

  867. have the

  868. right

  869. answers

  870. what if

  871. the conversation

  872. goes in

  873. this direction

  874. we get

  875. really nervous

  876. so we

  877. don't even

  878. begin

  879. rather than

  880. trusting Jesus

  881. to send the

  882. spirit to

  883. help us

  884. and trusting

  885. that even

  886. in the mess

  887. even if we

  888. don't get

  889. things right

  890. God can still

  891. work and God

  892. can still be

  893. on it

  894. Jesus teaches

  895. us about

  896. hell to

  897. shape our

  898. priorities

  899. and to

  900. shape our

  901. prayers

  902. for ourselves

  903. that we

  904. would beg

  905. for a sense

  906. of urgency

  907. and to have

  908. soft hearts

  909. but also

  910. that we

  911. would be

  912. looking for

  913. opportunity

  914. to love

  915. our friends

  916. and our

  917. city more

  918. by talking

  919. about the

  920. gospel

  921. that we

  922. would be

  923. willing not

  924. just to share

  925. our lives

  926. with others

  927. not just to

  928. meet physical

  929. needs but

  930. we would also

  931. be willing to

  932. share our

  933. God with

  934. our family

  935. and our

  936. friends and

  937. to seek to

  938. meet people's

  939. spiritual needs

  940. I find this

  941. a profoundly

  942. convicting

  943. and challenging

  944. section but I

  945. don't want us

  946. to go away

  947. from here

  948. feeling motivated

  949. by a sense

  950. of guilt

  951. I've done

  952. really badly

  953. and I know

  954. I should do

  955. better

  956. because that's

  957. where maybe

  958. our hearts

  959. instinctively go

  960. and I'm

  961. certainly not

  962. speaking as

  963. somebody who

  964. who's got

  965. this sorted

  966. and somebody

  967. who finds it

  968. easy to have

  969. those kind

  970. of conversations

  971. but Jesus

  972. is saying

  973. here's our

  974. goal

  975. our goal

  976. is first of

  977. all to

  978. care for

  979. people

  980. to see the

  981. urgency of

  982. sharing the

  983. gospel

  984. but ultimately

  985. as Christians

  986. we want to

  987. delight in

  988. Jesus so

  989. much

  990. that it would

  991. be our

  992. instinct

  993. it would be

  994. our greatest

  995. joy to

  996. share Jesus

  997. with others

  998. where sharing

  999. Jesus would

  1000. complete our

  1001. own joy

  1002. of our

  1003. salvation

  1004. the one

  1005. last thing

  1006. to say

  1007. about the

  1008. importance of

  1009. hell

  1010. is that

  1011. hell

  1012. perhaps

  1013. surprisingly

  1014. helps us

  1015. appreciate

  1016. God's

  1017. love

  1018. one of the

  1019. things about

  1020. Christianity

  1021. is that it

  1022. is a

  1023. rescue

  1024. religion

  1025. we don't

  1026. say do

  1027. better and

  1028. try harder

  1029. our message

  1030. is that as

  1031. people we

  1032. are spiritually

  1033. dead and we

  1034. need a

  1035. resurrection

  1036. we need help

  1037. from outside

  1038. of us

  1039. and Jesus

  1040. teaching on

  1041. sin and

  1042. hell reveals

  1043. the danger

  1044. clearly to

  1045. us

  1046. and that

  1047. left to

  1048. ourselves

  1049. our default

  1050. destination

  1051. for eternity

  1052. would be

  1053. hell

  1054. that we

  1055. need a

  1056. rescuer

  1057. or universally

  1058. we stand

  1059. condemned

  1060. we have

  1061. failed to

  1062. love God

  1063. with our

  1064. heart and

  1065. soul and

  1066. mind and

  1067. strength and

  1068. we failed

  1069. to love our

  1070. neighbor as

  1071. ourselves all

  1072. of the time

  1073. but hell

  1074. also explains

  1075. to us

  1076. Jesus journey

  1077. to the

  1078. cross

  1079. Jesus goes

  1080. to the

  1081. cross in

  1082. order to

  1083. defeat

  1084. the powers

  1085. of evil

  1086. and darkness

  1087. by absorbing

  1088. them into

  1089. himself and

  1090. by facing

  1091. the punishment

  1092. for our

  1093. sin

  1094. Jesus on

  1095. the cross

  1096. tastes

  1097. hell in

  1098. concentrated

  1099. form in

  1100. those three

  1101. hours of

  1102. darkness as

  1103. he carries

  1104. the sin

  1105. of the

  1106. world as

  1107. our loving

  1108. substitute

  1109. and when we

  1110. realize why

  1111. Jesus goes

  1112. to the cross

  1113. it helps us

  1114. to understand

  1115. more of the

  1116. love of God

  1117. I listened to

  1118. a lecture this

  1119. week from

  1120. Tim Keller

  1121. addressing

  1122. seminary

  1123. students and

  1124. he said the

  1125. doctrine of

  1126. hell is a

  1127. doorway into

  1128. the love of

  1129. God precisely

  1130. for that reason

  1131. it shows that

  1132. depth it shows

  1133. the extent of

  1134. God's redeeming

  1135. love and

  1136. also it

  1137. stops our

  1138. hearts from

  1139. growing cold

  1140. to God when

  1141. we realize what

  1142. he has lovingly

  1143. saved us

  1144. from

  1145. Charles Dickens

  1146. novel a tale

  1147. of two cities

  1148. climaxes with

  1149. Charles Darnay

  1150. one of the

  1151. main characters

  1152. in a prison

  1153. cell during the

  1154. French Revolution

  1155. awaiting his

  1156. execution the

  1157. following morning

  1158. well into the

  1159. prison comes his

  1160. friend Sidney

  1161. Carton and he

  1162. drugs Darnay

  1163. he takes his

  1164. clothes he has

  1165. another friend

  1166. drag Darnay out of

  1167. the prison and

  1168. off to freedom

  1169. and Sidney

  1170. Carton stands in

  1171. the place of his

  1172. friend and goes

  1173. to the executioner's

  1174. block the following

  1175. morning in a

  1176. wonderful moment of

  1177. self-giving love

  1178. and it's a small

  1179. picture of Jesus

1180. love for us in the

  1181. gospel and Jesus

  1182. sacrifice that is

  1183. intended to melt

  1184. and to warm our

  1185. hearts as we see

  1186. Jesus becoming our

  1187. substitute going to

  1188. the place of death

  1189. to rescue us from

  1190. eternal condemnation

  1191. from a living death

  1192. we see Jesus become

  1193. cursed so we might

  1194. be blessed

  1195. so let's hear this

  1196. loving warning from

  1197. Jesus this loving

  1198. and reliable guide

  1199. to look on the

  1200. cross as God's

  1201. loving response

  1202. to our death

  1203. sentence and to

  1204. trust him as

  1205. Lord and Savior

  1206. you
