  1. I just did something that I was told not to do when I was just a boy.

  2. And I was told not to do this by someone I greatly admired.

  3. It was someone who was a few years older than me,

  4. but someone who I knew really knew God.

  5. And they said to me, Daniel, never ever pray for humility.

  6. Because if you ask God for humility, he delights to answer that,

  7. and you won't like his answer.

  8. And they weren't joking either.

  9. They were sincere.

  10. Don't pray for that.

  11. And I think a lot of us would not ever tell us,

  12. or tell someone else not to pray for something,

  13. but I think a lot of us actually walk around with that unspoken suspicion

  14. that if we actually ask God for humility, we're not going to like the answer.

  15. Because a lot of us are afraid of what that would actually look like

  16. if we truly were to become a humble people.

  17. We're spending the summer at Church of Messiah going through the book of Proverbs,

  18. looking at the various themes that Proverbs speak to.

  19. Proverbs, as you know, is a book that was written with all these incredible pearls of wisdom from God.

  20. And so rather than what we normally do at Church of Messiah,

  21. going through a passage of Scripture and unpacking it,

  22. we're kind of putting a thread through these various pearls of wisdom from the book of Proverbs

  23. around different themes.

  24. And so this summer we've looked at the need to fear God

  25. and what that really looks like from the book of Proverbs.

  26. We've seen the harm sexual impurity causes and the healing found in the gospel.

  27. We've seen the need to take good advice, to listen to people, to truly be listeners.

  28. We've looked at these and other things,

  29. the responsibility to care for the vulnerable and the marginalized.

  30. Various ones of these themes, I'm guessing, have hit various ones in various ways.

  31. Some of these things have probably gripped various ones of our hearts.

  32. And there's certain weeks where it really hit home for us

  33. and the person beside you just didn't really hit home for them.

  34. And other ones, unlike the certain weeks that convict you a lot,

  35. other weeks it's really your sweet spot.

  36. There's some of us in the room and you heard about protection for the vulnerable.

  37. That's your jam.

  38. That's your thing.

  39. And so you hear about that and you're really tracking with it.

  40. Not so much from a conviction standpoint,

  41. but just to be inspired to continue doing what you're doing.

  42. But it is this week, specifically it is this week,

  43. that I'm praying will hit home for every single one of us

  44. because this is the week we're looking at pride and humility.

  45. And while various ones of us have various strengths and weaknesses,

  46. I do believe that the struggle with pride,

  47. being a people with pride,

  48. is something that every single human being struggles with.

  49. C.S. Lewis in his famous chapter on Pride and Mere Christianity wrote,

  50. It is pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation

  51. and every family since the world began.

  52. Other vices may sometimes bring people together.

  53. You may find good fellowship and jokes and friendliness among drunken people

  54. or even unchaste people,

  55. but pride always means enmity.

  56. It is enmity, and not only enmity between man and man,

  57. but enmity to God.

  58. By this he is saying that whereas other sins,

  59. other things that are contrary to God's way,

  60. there is the sense of fellowship in these wicked things,

  61. pride is unique in the way that it always puts you in opposition to others,

  62. in the way that it always makes you an enemy of those around you.

  63. It's by nature competitive.

  64. It is by nature opposed to those around you,

  65. threatened by other success.

  66. And in that respect, it brings disunity

  67. and breaking of friendship between people

  68. and breaking of friendship between people and God.

  69. Now, I'm not here just to unpack C.S. Lewis' words,

  70. but rather to unpack what the Bible says about this.

  71. So, Proverbs 16, verse 5 says,

    Proverbs 16:5

  72. Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord.

  73. Be assured he will not go unpunished.

  74. I believe you have the words on the screen, I'm hoping,

  75. but I'll read it again.

  76. If they're not on the screen, I'll read it again for you slowly.

  77. Everyone who is arrogant in heart

  78. is an abomination to the Lord.

  79. Be assured he will not go unpunished.

  80. There we are.

  81. The next verse we'll look at is Proverbs 6, 16-19.

  82. There are six things that the Lord hates.

  83. This is strong language.

  84. There are six things that the Lord hates.

  85. Seven that are an abomination to him.

  86. Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,

  87. and hands that shed innocent blood.

  88. A heart that devises wicked plans.

  89. Feet that make haste to run to evil.

  90. A false witness who breathes out lies.

  91. A one who sows discord among brothers.

  92. So in this list of six and seven things that God hates,

  93. the very first is haughty eyes.

  94. And it's not meaning like eyes that are hot.

  95. It's not saying that like that.

  96. You have very attractive eyes.

  97. It's not saying that God hates that.

  98. It's saying that God hates the eyes of those who are arrogant.

  99. He hates arrogance.

  100. This is strong language.

  101. And I think sometimes we find ourselves,

  102. sometimes we find ourselves reading the Bible

  103. as if there's two different gods.

  104. It's a God of the Old Testament who hates things

  105. and pours out wrath on things.

  106. And then a kind and loving, nice, tame God of the New Testament.

  107. But just to burst that bubble,

  108. in 1 Peter 5.5 and James 5.6,

  109. so those are two different authors in the New Testament,

  110. it says,

  111. God opposes the proud,

  112. but gives grace to the humble.

  113. So whereas in Proverbs,

  114. it speaks of God hating pride,

  115. and we can think of it as

  116. God is hating this pride element,

  117. but liking all this other stuff about us.

  118. In the New Testament,

  119. it speaks of God opposing the proud.

  120. So if we're a proud person,

  121. it means that God is opposing us.

  122. Now how can this be if we know that

  123. for God so loved the world

  124. that He gave His only Son?

  125. How can it be that

  126. that this God who we know is so loving,

  127. that He created each person to know Him,

  128. that He would actually oppose

  129. the very people He created?

  130. How can this be?

  131. Well, this is because pride,

  132. by its very nature,

  133. as Jesus was spoken of,

  134. pride by its very nature

  135. is putting ourselves in enmity

  136. with people and with God.

  137. And that pride is, in essence,

  138. a desire to kind of tower over people,

  139. to be looking down on people,

  140. to be looking down on all things.

  141. And when you're looking down,

  142. you cannot see what is above you.

  143. And so the person that is proud

  144. is, in a sense,

  145. not going to see the beautiful sunset above

  146. or anything above them,

  147. including God Himself.

  148. The person who is proud

  149. is threatened by the success,

  150. the well-being,

  151. by the thriving of someone else.

  152. And so God who is perfect,

  153. God who is always going to be more powerful,

  154. who is always going to be more,

  155. more everything good than us,

  156. is by very nature a threat to us.

  157. And so it puts us in opposition to God.

  158. And so God, in His love for us,

  159. and His desire for us to be people

  160. who are people who have more than money,

  161. people who have more than friends,

  162. people who have more than wealth,

  163. people who have Him,

  164. people who have come alive

  165. and that they know the living God.

  166. And God's desire for us

  167. to truly come alive and to know Him,

  168. to be people that aren't bent over like this,

  169. but people who are fully,

  170. who are upright and able to live

  171. and to see the beauty that He made us for.

  172. In God's desire for our good,

  173. our thriving,

  174. He must necessarily be opposed to our pride,

  175. for our pride is truly a bending us out of shape.

  176. In his book,

  177. The Blessedness of Self-Forgetfulness,

  178. Tim Keller talks about how

  179. we only notice those parts of our body

  180. that are hurting.

  181. We don't often stop and think like,

  182. oh, what a wonderful small toe I have.

  183. But if you're like me

  184. and you've ever stubbed your small toe,

  185. all of a sudden you realize

  186. that every step you take

  187. and every moment you're awake

  188. depends on that small baby toe of yours.

  189. And the same can be true

  190. if you pull a random muscle in your lower back.

  191. You don't even realize that muscle existed,

  192. but all of a sudden you know that muscle.

  193. In fact, all you can think about is that muscle.

  194. Some time ago,

  195. after reading this,

  196. maybe a year and a half ago,

  197. one of my roommates and I

  198. were walking home from the church office

  199. and we were just discussing the reality of this.

  200. So we thought,

  201. you know what,

  202. let's just stop as we walk home

  203. and let's start thanking God

  204. for all our healthy body parts

  205. that you'd never think of.

  206. We're just like,

  207. God, thank you for my esophagus,

  208. that it's swallowing food properly

  209. and it's not hurting right now.

  210. We just thought this would be

  211. the one moment of our lives

  212. where we actually are thinking

  213. about the body parts that are healthy.

  214. And you chuckle because it's funny.

  215. We don't do that.

  216. We don't think about our body parts

  217. that are healthy.

  218. We think about the body parts

  219. that are broken.

  220. And so for all the various body parts

  221. with its various weaknesses that we have,

  222. some of us have lower back issues

  223. and other ones of us have really bad eyes

  224. and whatever it is,

  225. whatever is unhealthy in us,

  226. the thing that is most unhealthy,

  227. that is always drawing attention to itself,

  228. is a part of us that isn't actually physical,

  229. but is our ego,

  230. our perception of ourselves.

  231. We can define the ego as our self-perception,

  232. our idea of our identity.

  233. And that part of our being,

  234. of who we are,

  235. is always drawing attention to itself.

  236. I might be much worse at this

  237. than many of you,

  238. but I believe all of you can relate to,

  239. just this past Tuesday,

  240. I was at a worship service.

  241. And I'm not someone,

  242. you'll notice I'm ever on the worship team,

  243. I'm drumming,

  244. I'm not singing,

  245. because I don't have one of those voices

  246. others want to listen to.

  247. I don't,

  248. my voice doesn't help people enter into

  249. thinking of God's goodness.

  250. It more speaks of the fallen nature of man.

  251. And so I'm at this worship service,

  252. and I'm singing,

  253. and all of a sudden I hear that,

  254. I'm hitting the notes.

  255. And it was this beautiful worship time,

  256. it was just such talented musicians,

  257. and they were so God-centered,

  258. and those songs we're singing

  259. were all about the glory of God,

  260. and I was in the zone,

  261. and I'm worshiping God,

  262. I felt so alive,

  263. and then I hear my voice,

  264. and I'm like,

  265. oh, this is beautiful.

  266. And all of a sudden,

  267. instantly,

  268. my attention goes from being about God

  269. to, like,

  270. my voice is awesome.

  271. And I go from, like,

  272. this puffed up thing

  273. to all of a sudden this shame,

  274. like, oh,

  275. I'm such a proud person.

  276. And then I'm like,

  277. oh,

  278. not only am I proud,

  279. but like,

  280. man,

  281. I'm looking at myself again,

  282. like,

  283. how come I'm not,

  284. and then I turn to worshiping God.

  285. And then I'm just,

  286. like,

  287. just lost in the worship of God,

  288. and all of a sudden,

  289. like,

  290. I started thinking about,

  291. like,

  292. how,

  293. like,

  294. I'm,

  295. I just,

  296. I kept going back and forth with this.

  297. We find that our ego

  298. is always drawing attention to itself,

  299. always trying to find worth

  300. and value in ourselves.

  301. And,

  302. and it's broken,

  303. it's broken.

  304. And you'll find,

  305. like,

  306. throughout the day,

  307. like,

  308. just pay attention,

  309. just take a day,

  310. pay attention

  311. to how often you find yourself

  312. kind of defending yourself.

  313. I,

  314. I,

  315. a lot of people,

  316. like,

  317. I'm not someone that,

  318. like,

  319. looks for offending people.

  320. Like,

  321. I,

  322. I like getting along with everyone.

  323. And so I tend to be,

  324. like,

  325. a nice,

  326. polite person.

  327. If I'm at the dinner table

  328. and a sibling will say something

  329. about me that I just feel is not fair,

  330. and,

  331. like,

  332. right away,

  333. I'm just defending myself.

  334. Like,

  335. that's not true.

  336. Like,

  337. I just,

  338. when it comes to,

  339. when someone is threatening

  340. our,

  341. the way people see us

  342. and our perception of ourselves,

  343. I know that you and I,

  344. I might be worse than you,

  345. but that you and I both struggle

  346. with always the need to defend ourselves

  347. because we feel like our,

  348. our perception of who we are

  349. and our value is,

  350. is under threat

  351. over and over and over.

  352. And so,

  353. even as these words are heavy

  354. before us today,

  355. on Proverbs,

  356. speaking of God's hatred

  357. for pride,

  358. we actually are going to find

  359. as we go through

  360. the book of Proverbs

  361. on pride and humility

  362. that these,

  363. these words actually

  364. speak to us

  365. about how we find our healing

  366. and our freedom

  367. from our broken ego.

  368. So,

  369. so what we see,

  370. the first point I want us

  371. to just pause on today

  372. is that pride positions us,

  373. positions,

  374. you need to learn

  375. to speak English,

  376. pride positions each one of us

  377. as an enemy of God.

  378. I'm strong with that,

  379. but it's up on the screen.

  380. You can see it.

  381. Pride positions,

  382. positions each one of us

  383. as enemies of God

  384. in that the way that it,

  385. it bends us out of shape

  386. as we seek to tower over people,

  387. as we seek to,

  388. to find this,

  389. this,

  390. our value

  391. in,

  392. in the,

  393. in being in something awesome

  394. is something in this way.

  395. It,

  396. it turns our attention away

  397. from God

  398. and in doing that

  399. it puts us at opposition to God.

  400. But not only that,

  401. as several of the verses

  402. Nora read,

  403. I'll read again right now.

  404. Proverbs 11 verse 2,

    Proverbs 11:2

  405. when pride comes,

  406. then comes disgrace,

  407. but with the humble

  408. is wisdom.

  409. Proverbs 16 verse 18 through 19,

    Proverbs 16:18–19

  410. pride goes before destruction

  411. and a haughty spirit

  412. before a fall.

  413. Now this is one of those things

  414. a lot of us have learned

  415. when we're pretty young.

  416. We're told pride goes before the fall.

  417. And I think a lot of us

  418. treat this truth

  419. that Proverbs speaks of

  420. as if it's karma.

  421. Like,

  422. oh,

  423. I don't want to be proud

  424. because then something bad

  425. will happen.

  426. You know,

  427. if I'm a proud person,

  428. then I'll get what I deserve.

  429. And so we don't want to be proud

  430. as if it's a formula.

  431. But it's not a formula.

  432. In fact,

  433. if we stop and think about

  434. the people we know

  435. and the people who are most proud,

  436. or if you look at the Bible

  437. and look at who are proud,

  438. the proudful people,

  439. you'll see that very often

  440. it seems like this truth

  441. is not true at all.

  442. That very often,

  443. like for example,

  444. not to name names,

  445. but that you'll find someone

  446. who is exceedingly,

  447. exceedingly in love with themselves,

  448. the most proud person

  449. that is on the airwaves today,

  450. and you find that

  451. unlike what these words are saying,

  452. that they'll have destruction,

  453. instead they're a multi-billionaire,

  454. one of the richest men in America,

  455. and that when they throw their hat

  456. into running for being

  457. the Republican nominee,

  458. they find themselves

  459. pulling at the top.

  460. You know what I'm saying?

  461. It just doesn't seem fair.

  462. You look at these words,

  463. pride brings destruction,

  464. and then you see a man

  465. who is exceedingly arrogant,

  466. and he seems,

  467. not just,

  468. he is so successful

  469. financially,

  470. politically,

  471. business-wise,

  472. in all these different ways.

  473. It's phenomenal.

  474. So what do we do

  475. with this truth and that?

  476. Well, there's actually,

  477. these words, I think,

  478. are telling us,

  479. not simply that

  480. the proud will one day

  481. meet their judgment,

  482. their maker,

  483. one day.

  484. We know that's true.

  485. But that there's this misery

  486. that is found in pride.

  487. There's a misery,

  488. not glory,

  489. that's found in pride.

  490. And that is something we saw

  491. this past week

  492. at Church on Wednesday.

  493. We just happened

  494. in a very different passage.

  495. We're going through

  496. different kings of the Bible.

  497. But it just so happened

  498. this week,

  499. I was scheduled to speak

  500. on pride and humility.

  501. And at Church on Wednesday,

  502. we were looking at Nebuchadnezzar,

  503. and that happens to be

  504. on pride and humility.

  505. And we see that Nebuchadnezzar

  506. was the richest of all kings

  507. that had ever lived before him.

  508. It was the richest

  509. of any of his contemporaries.

  510. Not only does the Bible

  511. speak of his wealth,

  512. but historians also know

  513. that Nebuchadnezzar

  514. was this ferocious,

  515. wealthy,

  516. luxurious,

  517. just king of kings.

  518. He was known

  519. as the king of kings,

  520. even though that's a title

  521. that's supposed to apply

  522. to God alone.

  523. And Daniel chapter 4

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  524. opens with him,

  525. on the one hand,

  526. being so successful,

  527. and on the other hand,

  528. he's filled with anxiety.

  529. He's having these scary dreams,

  530. and he's so afraid.

  531. And as you meet people,

  532. and you actually get to know people

  533. who have so much success,

  534. you'll often find

  535. that they're actually people

  536. who don't have any enjoyment

  537. in their success.

  538. I don't often quote from her.

  539. In fact,

  540. I never before this week

  541. quote from her,

  542. but to illuminate the scriptures.

  543. But as someone who actually

  544. has a lot of insight

  545. on this issue,

  546. is a woman who's been

  547. so successful as a musician,

  548. as a pop star.

  549. She has so much more money

  550. than any of us in this room have.

  551. Probably more money

  552. than all of us combined.

  553. She has a lot more friends

  554. and popularity

  555. and just all the various things

  556. that you and I tend to find ourselves

  557. pursuing to find happiness.

  558. She's got them in spades.

  559. And her name is Madonna,

  560. and she wrote this

  561. in Vogue magazine,

  562. which I read quoted

  563. by someone else.

  564. I didn't actually read Vogue.

  565. Just saying.

  566. She says this,

  567. My drive in life comes

  568. from a fear of being mediocre.

  569. That is always pushing me.

  570. I push past one spell of it

  571. and discover myself

  572. as a special human being.

  573. But then I feel

  574. I am still mediocre

  575. and uninteresting

  576. unless I do something else.

  577. Because even though

  578. I have become somebody,

  579. I still have to prove

  580. that I am somebody.

  581. My struggle has never ended.

  582. And I guess it never will.

  583. Madonna's words

  584. should devastate our pursuit

  585. of the American dream,

  586. of pursuing whatever it is

  587. that you and I pursue

  588. to find a sense of value and worth.

  589. Whether that's money,

  590. or whether that's material stuff,

  591. whether that's popularity

  592. and friends,

  593. or even some of us

  594. have forsaken all of that

  595. and instead we're pursuing

  596. this seemingly humble life

  597. of service.

  598. We may even find ourselves

  599. living among the poor

  600. and maybe even being hippies

  601. and fighting the system

  602. and raging against the machine

  603. and all that stuff.

  604. We're not pursuing

  605. the American dream.

  606. But what instead we're pursuing

  607. is a sense of worth found

  608. in our doing,

  609. wonderful Mother Teresa-like stuff.

  610. And what Madonna is saying,

  611. it doesn't matter

  612. how much you pursue,

  613. whatever you choose to pursue,

  614. as you achieve that thing,

  615. you find that this thing

  616. you thought would give you

  617. significance is failing that.

  618. There's a poverty,

  619. there's a destruction

  620. that is greater

  621. than not having any food.

  622. And that is having a lot of food

  623. and yet finding it

  624. doesn't fill you.

  625. There's an emptiness

  626. that is greater

  627. than having no friends

  628. and that is being surrounded

  629. by tons of friends

  630. and feeling so very alone.

  631. King Nebuchadnezzar found that,

  632. the king of Babylon

  633. in Daniel chapter 4,

    Daniel 4 chapter mention

  634. that he has everything

  635. a man or woman

  636. could ever dream of

  637. and so much more

  638. than he can ever have.

  639. And yet even in the midst of it,

  640. he's so afraid

  641. he's going to lose it.

  642. There's no enjoyment in it.

  643. C.S. Lewis speaks

  644. how pride does this to us.

  645. He writes,

  646. pride gets no pleasure

  647. out of having something,

  648. only out of having more of it

  649. than the next person.

  650. We say that people

  651. are proud of being rich

  652. or clever or good looking,

  653. but they are not.

  654. They are proud of being richer

  655. or cleverer

  656. or better looking than others.

  657. If everyone else

  658. became equally rich

  659. or clever or good looking,

  660. there would be nothing

  661. to be proud about.

  662. He writes about how pride

  663. is the most perverted

  664. of all sins

  665. and it robs us more

  666. than anything else

  667. in that we looked

  668. a few weeks ago

  669. about how sexual impurity,

  670. how lust will lead us

  671. to do things

  672. that are harming ourselves

  673. and others

  674. in such horrific ways.

  675. And yet C.S. Lewis talks

  676. about how as perverted

  677. as sexual impurity is,

  678. that lust brings a man

  679. to sleep with a woman

  680. or a woman to sleep

  681. with a man

  682. because he desires her,

  683. albeit in a selfish way.

  684. But pride leads someone

  685. to sleep with someone else

  686. in an impure way,

  687. something to prove

  688. that they can.

  689. That the proud person

  690. is not actually desiring

  691. the things they're pursuing,

  692. they're desiring

  693. a sense of significance

  694. from it.

  695. And so it actually robs them,

  696. empties them.

  697. It takes from them

  698. the ability for them

  699. to enjoy those very things,

  700. even those sinful things.

  701. In a sense,

  702. pride robs people

  703. of even being able

  704. to enjoy sin.

  705. It's a very,

  706. very destructive thing.

  707. And if it robs us

  708. of the ability

  709. to enjoy sin,

  710. how much more

  711. it robs us

  712. of the ability

  713. to enjoy

  714. what we're really made for.

  715. Pride is a horrible,

  716. horrible thing.

  717. And in that respect,

  718. even though you may see

  719. billionaires

  720. who are very arrogant,

  721. you'll find that

  722. their destruction,

  723. they're already living

  724. in their destruction.

  725. So often,

  726. the proud are actually miserable.

  727. And that not only applies

  728. to the billionaires,

  729. it also applies

  730. to you and me

  731. as we continue

  732. to search for significance.

  733. So we see that

  734. not only does God,

  735. not only does pride

  736. put us in a position

  737. of being an enemy of God,

  738. we read it in that

  739. about how God hates pride.

  740. We see that pride

  741. harms each one of us.

  742. It causes destruction,

  743. it causes misery

  744. and disgrace.

  745. That's the second point

  746. if we can pull it up.

  747. Pride harms each one of us.

  748. We read about how pride

  749. brings destruction.

  750. It harms us.

  751. It is the opposite

  752. of what we're made for

  753. and it robs us

  754. of our ability

  755. to enjoy life.

  756. Now, the scriptures

  757. illuminate part

  758. of why this is.

  759. It says in Proverbs 29,

    Proverbs 29:25

  760. verse 25,

  761. if we can bring it up

  762. on the screen,

  763. Proverbs 29,

    Proverbs 29:25

  764. verse 25,

  765. the fear of man

  766. lays a snare,

  767. but whoever trusts

  768. in the Lord

  769. is safe.

  770. The fear of man

  771. is a snare,

  772. but whoever trusts

  773. in the Lord

  774. is safe.

  775. The fear of man

  776. is a snare,

  777. is speaking

  778. to the very nature

  779. of what pride is.

  780. See, pride

  781. is this search

  782. for a verdict

  783. of who we are.

  784. Every single one

  785. of us is born

  786. with this.

  787. Again, we have this ego,

  788. this perception

  789. of self,

  790. when we're looking

  791. for a verdict,

  792. who am I

  793. and what is my value?

  794. And the fear of man

  795. is saying that.

  796. It's not that simply

  797. that we're afraid

  798. that every man

  799. is actually the boogeyman.

  800. No, the fear of man

  801. means that we're looking

  802. for a verdict

  803. of our value.

  804. Our ego is calling

  805. out to us

  806. for its sense

  807. of identity

  808. from the value

  809. that others give us,

  810. from the verdict,

  811. the judgment of others.

  812. Now, today,

  813. if you speak

  814. with a lot of

  815. popular counselors

  816. and all that,

  817. or even just

  818. your average guy

  819. on the street,

  820. they'll tell you,

  821. don't care what

  822. others think of you.

  823. All that matters

  824. is what you think of you.

  825. I was at camp

  826. a few weeks ago

  827. and I was about to,

  828. I was going to be leading

  829. for all the kids

  830. a fitness exercise,

  831. like dance class thing.

  832. I'm not a dancer,

  833. but I was going to lead it.

  834. And so,

  835. we were trying to figure out

  836. whether or not

  837. the clothes that they

  838. were thinking of me

  839. wearing for this

  840. was clothes from

  841. workout videos

  842. of the 1980s

  843. or girls' clothes.

  844. I don't know

  845. if you're familiar

  846. with the 80s,

  847. but there's some overlap

  848. right there.

  849. So,

  850. we're trying to discern,

  851. is this cross-dressing

  852. or is this funny?

  853. You know?

  854. And I mean,

  855. you can,

  856. because cross-dressing

  857. in the Bible

  858. actually speaks against

  859. the funny from the 80s

  860. would be okay.

  861. So,

  862. we're trying to figure this out

  863. and kind of looking

  864. at the Bible,

  865. trying to see what it says

  866. about this.

  867. And this guy,

  868. this Christian,

  869. he's one of the leaders

  870. of this camp,

  871. just blurs out to me,

  872. like,

  873. judge not lest you be judged.

  874. He was saying,

  875. like,

  876. don't try to make

  877. a judgment about this,

  878. just do whatever

  879. feels right to you,

  880. go for it,

  881. thinking that that's

  882. what the Bible

  883. calls us to.

  884. In a sense,

  885. he's doing what

  886. a lot of people do today,

  887. which is,

  888. okay,

  889. don't fear man,

  890. just fear yourself.

  891. Just find your verdict,

  892. your value,

  893. your sense of ego

  894. from yourself.

  895. That's what determines

  896. your verdict

  897. of who you are.

  898. But,

  899. these words about

  900. fearing man,

  901. them being a trap,

  902. is a trap for us,

  903. whether it's that

  904. we're fearing the opinion

  905. of others,

  906. we're looking to others

  907. for value,

  908. or we're looking to

  909. ourselves for value.

  910. Either way,

  911. it's a trap.

  912. And it's a trap

  913. because there's such

  914. promise in that.

  915. If you've ever tasted

  916. praise from people,

  917. if you've ever received

  918. praise from someone,

  919. others or from a sense

  920. from yourself,

  921. it feels so good

  922. for a moment.

  923. And so we continue to pursue

  924. that,

  925. pursue people thinking

  926. highly of us,

  927. or pursuing ourselves

  928. thinking highly of us.

  929. But what we find

  930. and what Madonna

  931. found to be true

  932. is that it's a trap,

  933. that it never satisfies,

  934. that it's never enough.

  935. And we have this

  936. relentless,

  937. never-ending

  938. pursuit of significance,

  939. pursuit of a verdict,

  940. a good verdict,

  941. that never lasts,

  942. that never ever lasts.

  943. So if pride

  944. and looking to others

  945. for the verdict

  946. ever solves

  947. is a trap,

  948. how do we become

  949. free of it?

  950. Benjamin Franklin,

  951. in his effort

  952. to become humble,

  953. found this.

  954. These are his words.

  955. There is perhaps

  956. no one of our natural passions

  957. so hard to subdue

  958. as pride.

  959. Beat it down,

  960. stifle it,

  961. mortify it as much

  962. as one pleases,

  963. it is still alive.

  964. Even if I could conceive

  965. that I had completely

  966. overcome it,

  967. I should probably

  968. be proud

  969. of my humility.

  970. And I think that

  971. you and I can relate

  972. to that,

  973. that we sometimes

  974. find ourselves

  975. living and thinking

  976. in a humble way

  977. and instantly we're like,

  978. yes,

  979. I am the humble man,

  980. like I am,

  981. this is awesome

  982. and then you find

  983. that you're proud again.

  984. Another way

  985. that we deal with it

  986. is not simply

  987. being proud of our humility

  988. and that's perverted

  989. but is that

  990. we so often,

  991. especially in the church,

  992. we try to become

  993. humble people

  994. by thinking

  995. really,

  996. really bad stuff

  997. about ourselves.

  998. We often want to

  999. just dwell

  1000. and think about

  1001. our wretchedness

  1002. thinking that this

  1003. will make

  1004. our humility possible.

  1005. But what we find

  1006. is that that ego

  1007. that is always

  1008. drawing attention

  1009. to itself

  1010. and in a sense

1011. longs to be puffed up

1012. that the reverse of that

  1013. that a very much

  1014. deflated ego,

  1015. a very low view

  1016. of yourself

  1017. is actually still

  1018. this self-obsession.

  1019. And so we find

  1020. that whether we are

  1021. those who think

  1022. that we're awesome,

  1023. super, super awesome,

1024. or we're those who think

  1025. that we're super,

  1026. super trash,

  1027. that either way

  1028. it's this broken ego

  1029. that's always drawing

  1030. attention to itself.

  1031. in a pursuit

  1032. of trying to become

  1033. a humble person

  1034. as a teenager,

1035. I used to always be

  1036. saying under my breath

  1037. about myself

  1038. and I thought

  1039. this was good spirituality.

  1040. I thought this was

  1041. walking with God.

  1042. I'm a wretch.

  1043. I'm a wretch.

1044. I used to always be saying

  1045. that something would happen.

  1046. I'm like,

  1047. I'm a wretch.

  1048. I'm broke.

  1049. I'm a wretch.

  1050. I'd always be saying

  1051. these things

1052. and some of the things

  1053. I was saying

1054. some of it is bordering

  1055. on biblical

  1056. but it was always

  1057. about me.

  1058. I was not someone

1059. who was a worshiper of God.

  1060. I was someone

  1061. who was self-obsessed

  1062. of my wretchedness.

1063. It was still my ego

  1064. calling attention to itself.

1065. So how do we become

  1066. free of this?

  1067. Well, Proverbs 11.2 says

  1068. what we already read,

  1069. when pride comes

  1070. then comes disgrace

  1071. but with the humble

  1072. is wisdom.

  1073. Proverbs 22.4 says

  1074. the reward for humility

1075. and the fear of the Lord

1076. is riches and honor of life.

  1077. We see that humility

  1078. is in a sense

  1079. synonymous with wisdom.

  1080. We see that humility

  1081. is synonymous

1082. with the fear of the Lord.

  1083. Why is that?

  1084. Because each of us

1085. is searching for this verdict

1086. and so many of us

  1087. our ego is broken

  1088. and it's always relentlessly

1089. trying to find that verdict

  1090. for ourselves

  1091. to illustrate

  1092. what it means

  1093. to be fearing God.

  1094. And Paul,

  1095. the Apostle Paul

  1096. is an amazing example

  1097. of someone

  1098. who is truly

  1099. a humble person.

  1100. In 1 Corinthians 4.3

  1101. he says

  1102. he's rebuking

  1103. the Corinthians

  1104. for competing

  1105. with each other

  1106. for their verdict

  1107. of their significance.

  1108. And he says

  1109. but with me

1110. it is a very small thing

1111. that I should be judged

  1112. by you

1113. or by any human court.

  1114. In fact,

1115. I do not even judge myself.

  1116. So he's saying

  1117. I don't actually look

1118. for my verdict and value

1119. from any one of you

1120. from any one of you

1121. nor am I trying to

  1122. find the verdict

1123. from what I think of myself.

  1124. No,

  1125. it doesn't matter.

  1126. Instead he says

1127. but I'm not thereby acquitted

  1128. by the fact

1129. that he doesn't judge himself.

  1130. He says no,

  1131. it is the Lord

  1132. who judges me.

  1133. He's saying

1134. I'm looking for my verdict

  1135. of who I am

  1136. from God.

  1137. Now,

  1138. that might sound

  1139. really freeing at first

1140. but if you think about it

1141. God knows each one of us

1142. and the depravity of ourselves

  1143. so much more

1144. than any one of us.

  1145. God knows

1146. the wickedness of our hearts

1147. even more than you and I

  1148. can ever imagine.

1149. And so when he turns his attention

1150. to a verdict from God

1151. that might sound good at first

  1152. but then you think

  1153. oh no,

  1154. God actually knows.

  1155. When everyone else

1156. is fooled by my politeness

1157. and when I seem like

  1158. I'm caring for people

1159. but I'm actually doing it

1160. for the desire of praise

  1161. God sees that.

  1162. So in a sense

  1163. God being our judge

  1164. should actually fill us

  1165. with more fear

  1166. and more insecurity

  1167. in a sense

  1168. than if it was

  1169. us fearing man.

  1170. Except that Paul

  1171. knows reality

  1172. and he knows

  1173. that the good news

  1174. isn't just an idea

  1175. it's the reality

  1176. that Jesus has actually

  1177. achieved the perfect verdict

  1178. that he lived

  1179. the perfect life

  1180. and that Jesus

  1181. made the verdict

  1182. that he received

  1183. God said over Jesus

  1184. this is my son

  1185. whom I love

1186. and whom I am well pleased.

  1187. And by Jesus dying

  1188. on the cross

1189. we all know the story

  1190. we celebrate every Easter

  1191. and every communion service

1192. that Jesus died on the cross

  1193. Jesus did that

1194. in order that we might

  1195. receive that verdict

  1196. from that Jesus deserves.

  1197. That the verdict

  1198. over Jesus

  1199. that God says

  1200. this is my son

1201. with who I am well pleased

  1202. that you and I

  1203. can actually receive

  1204. that verdict

  1205. that value

  1206. of who we are

  1207. is the value

  1208. that Jesus has

  1209. that we receive that

  1210. as we turn from

  1211. our own self-obsession

  1212. and turn from

  1213. our own sin way

1214. and we look to God

1215. as we pray to him

  1216. for forgiveness

  1217. and look to him

  1218. for life

  1219. and trust in him

  1220. we receive what Jesus

  1221. has made possible.

  1222. And as Paul

  1223. does that

  1224. that's becoming a Christian

  1225. Paul has become

  1226. a follower of Jesus

  1227. and receives Jesus' verdict

  1228. he no longer

  1229. has this broken ego

  1230. that's always calling

  1231. attention to itself.

  1232. 2 Timothy

  1233. is Paul's final letter

  1234. before he dies

  1235. and I know that

  1236. when he's chained

1237. to a wall in that letter

  1238. and it's incredible

  1239. how that letter

  1240. which is where Paul

1241. has so much to be

  1242. in a sense

  1243. unthankful for

  1244. he's going through

  1245. such hard times

  1246. instead the letter

  1247. bursts with Paul's

  1248. love for the Lord

  1249. and his concern

  1250. for Timothy's well-being.

1251. How do you be someone

  1252. that when you're going

1253. through your worst day ever

  1254. you're actually concerned

  1255. about someone else

  1256. you're not just there

  1257. to just pour out

  1258. all your lament?

  1259. It's because Paul's ego

  1260. was healed.

1261. Paul had a healed self

  1262. a healed understanding

  1263. of who he was

  1264. that it wasn't

  1265. bent out of shape

  1266. always trying to

  1267. call attention to itself

  1268. instead because he had

  1269. become someone

  1270. who was actually humble

1271. whose view was on God

1272. his life was on God

1273. whose attention was on him

1274. his fear was of him

1275. he was able to therefore

  1276. be someone genuinely

  1277. interested in other people.

  1278. C.S. Lewis writes

  1279. in that famous chapter

  1280. on pride and humility

1281. how if you ever meet

  1282. a truly humble person

  1283. you probably didn't realize

  1284. you're a humble person.

  1285. He writes how

  1286. it's not the person

  1287. who is always speaking

  1288. of their wretchedness

1289. that is a humble person

  1290. but that person again

  1291. is actually quite self

  1292. obsessed with their wretchedness.

1293. Rather you wouldn't notice it

  1294. because the humble person

  1295. would be someone

  1296. who's actually genuinely

  1297. interested in you.

  1298. He's genuinely interested

  1299. in other people.

  1300. Lewis writes that

  1301. a humble person

  1302. is not someone

1303. who thinks less of themselves

  1304. it's someone

1305. who thinks of themselves less.

  1306. That a humble person

  1307. isn't someone

1308. who thinks less of themselves

  1309. it's someone

1310. who thinks of themselves less.

  1311. that as our ego

  1312. becomes healed

  1313. as we receive

  1314. a verdict

  1315. from what God

  1316. thinks of us

  1317. we become people

  1318. who are actually able

  1319. to turn our attention

  1320. away from ourselves.

  1321. We're actually able

  1322. to find freedom.

  1323. And as our attention

  1324. turns away

  1325. from always trying

  1326. to get that verdict

  1327. from other people

  1328. we're actually

  1329. you're able to

  1330. when we thank God

  1331. for a meal

  1332. we're actually there

  1333. saying

  1334. I'm not trying to

  1335. have this meal

  1336. so to have

  1337. more of a meal

  1338. than someone else.

  1339. I'm actually able

  1340. to enjoy my meal.

  1341. that you have friends

  1342. not for the sake

  1343. of having more friends

  1344. than others

  1345. but you're having friends

  1346. not to find value

  1347. in your friends

1348. but you found your value

  1349. in God

  1350. and therefore

  1351. you're free

  1352. to actually enjoy

  1353. the friendships you have.

  1354. And in that respect

1355. the person who might have

1356. much less than the rich

  1357. is living a life

1358. of so much more joy

  1359. and meaning

  1360. and even enjoyment

  1361. and pleasure

  1362. than the person

1363. who is so very proudful.

  1364. And so just finally

  1365. a few takeaways

1366. of how we can become

  1367. these people

  1368. who instead of

  1369. fearing what others think

1370. or fearing what we think

  1371. of ourselves

  1372. or living a life

  1373. that is thinking

  1374. of ourselves less.

  1375. How do we become

  1376. free of that cycle

  1377. that Benjamin Franklin

  1378. spoke of

1379. as we try to become

  1380. more humble

1381. we just get more pride

  1382. about our humility

  1383. or be free

  1384. of just trying

  1385. to be obsessed

  1386. with our wretchedness.

  1387. How do we become

  1388. truly humble people?

  1389. Well,

1390. as so many other issues

  1391. we need God's help.

1392. And so this is a prayer

1393. I want to invite you

  1394. to pray

1395. even if you use other words

  1396. to consistently pray

  1397. this in your life.

  1398. Dear God,

  1399. grow in me

  1400. a humble

  1401. trust and confidence

  1402. in your saving work

  1403. in my life

  1404. through the gospel.

  1405. That we'd be

  1406. people who consistently pray

  1407. Dear God,

  1408. grow in me

  1409. a humble

  1410. trust and confidence

  1411. in your saving work

  1412. in my life

  1413. through the gospel.

  1414. The next thing

  1415. to pray

  1416. another way

  1417. to pray this

  1418. would be to pray

  1419. a prayer like this.

  1420. Dear God,

  1421. grow in me

  1422. a fear of you

  1423. an awe of you

1424. and a love for you

  1425. that captivates my heart

  1426. holds my attention

  1427. and transforms

  1428. the way I see

  1429. everything.

  1430. In preparation

  1431. for the sermons

  1432. this week

  1433. I went onto Twitter

  1434. and I just typed

  1435. in the hashtag

  1436. Grand Canyon.

  1437. I wanted to see

  1438. what do people tweet

  1439. when they go

  1440. to the Grand Canyon.

  1441. And I saw that

1442. although if you look up

  1443. almost anything else

  1444. you'll see selfies

  1445. of someone in front

  1446. of whatever monument

  1447. a famous monument

  1448. or place

  1449. when you look at

1450. tweets of the Grand Canyon

  1451. what you see

  1452. is the Grand Canyon

  1453. and you end up

  1454. reading these tweets

  1455. about I never felt

  1456. so alive

  1457. freedom

1458. all this kind of stuff

  1459. about freedom

  1460. and being alive

  1461. and being awake

  1462. and about the beauty

  1463. of the Grand Canyon.

1464. You don't see much selfies

  1465. almost none.

  1466. Why is that?

  1467. It's because no one

1468. goes to the Grand Canyon

  1469. this majestic thing

  1470. in nature

  1471. to glory themselves.

  1472. They go to feel

  1473. so small

  1474. and so alive

  1475. as they turn

  1476. their attention

  1477. finally from themselves

  1478. for a moment

  1479. to the majesty

  1480. of the Grand Canyon.

1481. I'm trying to become healthy

  1482. so I've been trying

1483. to go to the gym

1484. and I was at the gym

  1485. the other day

  1486. there was a guy

  1487. whose muscles were

  1488. I think 18.6 times

  1489. bigger than mine

  1490. like he was huge

  1491. and I noticed that

  1492. like every time

  1493. he passed any mirror

  1494. in the gym

1495. like he just kind of stopped

  1496. he just like

1497. he caught his own eye

  1498. and he just looked

  1499. and he just like

  1500. looked so lovingly

  1501. at himself

  1502. and I just picture

1503. like what would this guy

1504. look like if he went

  1505. to the Grand Canyon

  1506. like would he actually

1507. be standing at the Grand Canyon

  1508. just like looking

  1509. at his biceps

  1510. like his biceps

  1511. might be big

1512. but compared to the Grand Canyon

  1513. they're very small

  1514. and it's something

  1515. so freeing

1516. people chop the Grand Canyon

  1517. as if it's like

  1518. quite often

  1519. because

  1520. it's something

  1521. where they finally

  1522. get a piece

  1523. a moment

1524. of what it feels like

  1525. to turn your attention

  1526. from yourself

  1527. the Grand Canyon

1528. as awesome as it is

  1529. can hold your attention

  1530. perhaps for an afternoon

1531. or maybe if you camp there

  1532. for a week

1533. but there's only one thing

1534. in all of the universe

1535. that can hold our attention

  1536. for all of eternity

1537. and for all of our lives

  1538. and that is God

  1539. the one who breathed

  1540. the universe

  1541. into existence

  1542. this freedom we find

1543. as we look to God

1544. and so that's why we pray

  1545. dear God

1546. grow in me a fear of you

1547. and an awe of you

1548. and a love for you

  1549. that captivates my heart

  1550. that helps you

  1551. turn my heart

  1552. and my attention

  1553. away from my muscles

  1554. or my voice

  1555. or my

  1556. how caring I am

1557. all those kind of things

  1558. Lord turn my attention

  1559. from that

1560. would you hold my attention

  1561. and transform the way

  1562. I see everything

  1563. so those are

  1564. two different prayers

  1565. to pray

  1566. just that God

1567. will grow in us humility

  1568. and the third thing

  1569. is that we'd be

  1570. worshippers of God

1571. one of the best ways

  1572. to combat pride

  1573. in our lives

1574. is just as we worship God

  1575. that's the final point

  1576. just worship God

  1577. that's why

1578. some of why we sing songs

  1579. is that it's turning

  1580. our attention from ourselves

  1581. and turning our attention

1582. to the bigness of God

  1583. I mentioned King Nebuchadnezzar

  1584. before

1585. and how he was the richest

1586. of kings living in such fear

  1587. eventually

  1588. in God's mercy

  1589. God drives him

  1590. into the wilderness

1591. and makes him like an animal

  1592. for seven long years

  1593. and Nebuchadnezzar's healing

  1594. and restoration of sanity

  1595. is found

  1596. as he turns

  1597. after seven years

1598. turns his eyes toward heaven

  1599. and worships God

1600. and as he worships God

  1601. his self-obsession

  1602. his arrogance

  1603. is taken away

  1604. and he becomes someone

  1605. who's fully alive

  1606. and the joy

  1607. that jumps out

  1608. of the page

  1609. of Nebuchadnezzar's prayers

  1610. and worship

  1611. is a beautiful thing

  1612. we become alive

1613. as we turn our attention

  1614. away from ourselves

  1615. and turn our attention

  1616. to God

  1617. so the final point

  1618. that we have

  1619. is that humility

  1620. restores our sanity

  1621. our friendships

  1622. our joy

  1623. and our life

  1624. that humility

  1625. restores our sanity

  1626. our friendships

  1627. our joy

  1628. and our life

  1629. this is contrary

  1630. to the input

  1631. I received

  1632. as a young boy

  1633. this is something

  1634. to pray for

  1635. this is something

  1636. to ask God for

1637. and to look to God for

1638. that he would make us

  1639. a humble people

  1640. so let us

1641. look to him right now

  1642. in prayer

  1643. Heavenly Father

  1644. I would venture a guess

  1645. that every single one

1646. of us in this room

  1647. knows what it's like

1648. to try to be humble

  1649. and to find that

  1650. even in our pursuit

  1651. of humility

  1652. we're so proud

  1653. God it seems that

  1654. we lack the ability

  1655. as human beings

  1656. to be really

  1657. truly humble

  1658. apart from you

1659. and God we don't want

1660. to be apart from you

1661. Lord we want to be

  1662. so close to you

1663. and so Father I ask

  1664. that you would help

  1665. each one of us

  1666. in this room

  1667. to overcome

  1668. this sin

  1669. that every man

  1670. and woman knows

  1671. the sin of pride

  1672. that you would bring

  1673. us freedom

  1674. from trying to find

  1675. a verdict

  1676. in the value

  1677. and opinion

  1678. others give us

  1679. or that ourselves

  1680. give us

  1681. that instead

  1682. we would look

  1683. to you

  1684. that like Nebuchadnezzar

  1685. you would heal us

  1686. God

  1687. from our

  1688. self-obsession

  1689. that you would

  1690. restore to us

  1691. the joy

  1692. and the meaning

  1693. and the purpose

  1694. and the lives

1695. that we were made for

1696. that each one of us

  1697. would truly be lovers

  1698. and worshippers

  1699. of you

  1700. God that you would

  1701. grow in us

  1702. a humble

  1703. trust and confidence

  1704. in the finished work

  1705. of Jesus

  1706. and the verdict

  1707. we receive

  1708. from you

  1709. through him

  1710. and that you would

  1711. captivate our hearts

  1712. that you would

  1713. hold our attention

  1714. and you would

  1715. transform the way

  1716. we see everything

1717. that we might be people

  1718. fully alive in you

  1719. for your glory

  1720. and for the good

  1721. of this world

  1722. in Jesus name

  1723. Amen
